Park Shi-eun joins Criminal Minds as Lee Jun-ki’s first love

I’m happy to see child actress Park Shi-eun get another role so soon after her stint on KBS’s Seven Day Queen: She will join the cast of tvN’s upcoming Criminal Minds as Lee Jun-ki’s first love, although given that her role will likely appear only in flashbacks, I’m assuming she’ll be more like a guest star, rather than a recurring or starring role.

Park Shi-eun was adorably plucky as the younger counterpart to Park Min-young’s Chae-kyung in Seven Day Queen, and opposite Baek Seung-hwan who played the young Lee Yeok, the young couple’s puppy romance got me fully invested in a love story that is guaranteed to end in tears. Not sure whether I should thank her for that. But on the other hand, because of her performance in the fusion sageuk, I’m looking forward to her appearance in Criminal Minds in spite of my reservations about adding a first love backstory to Lee Jun-ki’s profiler character.

For someone so young (she was born in 2001), Park Shi-eun has amassed a pretty impressive list of credits, which includes The Good Wife, Signal, and Six Flying Dragons, the last of which coincidentally also featured Baek Seung-hwan as a young Moo-hyul. It looks like she has a bright future ahead, and I’ll definitely be following her career trajectory, hoping it will replicate previous successful child-actors-turned-leads.

Criminal Minds, the upcoming remake of the American procedural about profilers catching serial killers, will premiere in July in tvN’s brand-new Wednesday-Thursday slot.

She is indeed a young talented actress with bright future! Now the question is who is going to play LJG younger version, it's not easy to find someone as beautiful and charismatic as him!?

What about Park Jin-young (1996) as LJG younger version. I liked his acting and charisma in LOTBS.

Yes. That would be interesting to see which actor to play the younger version of Lee Jun Ki. I don't find it difficult to find a charismatic child actor in Korea but as you said, LJK is beautiful. He is seldom referred to as handsome but beautiful is synonymous to him.

I have come to accept that you can't have a Korean remake that doesn't automatically insert a backstory that contains a tragic past for the main protagonist or connects all of the main characters (I am looking at you Liar Game). Having said this TVN did an awesome job with Good Wife so I am looking forward to seeing how they remake criminal minds.

Truth to be told, in the original CM series, some of the characters's backstories are kind of tragic and sad.

This kind of work is unusual to begin with, and I can completely understand wanting to give a character the impetus to travel down the dark roads that Criminal Minds explores.

Seriously~!!!!! I this so much.

The recent Japanese re-adaptation of Kimi wa Petto added some lame "they met as kids!" backstory AND and time jump AND the cut out the several volumes worth of story that showed the characters dating as mature adults and having an adult relationship.

ARRRGGGHHHHH remakes :(

Do you have any idea what's Criminal Minds? Girl, it's not a typical k-drama. It's a unique format to kdramaland.

If they are going to make it like any kdramas, why would they bother to pay the license? They could have just created a new one. They did it in Ghost/Phantom, Signal, Voice and the many other procedural Korean dramas.

Starting to sound like it based on this small background story? In the original CM, some of the profilers also have their background stories ans this drama's main character isn't LJK alone. So, even with this whole first love thing.. I don't think it will take big part at all.

Anyways one of the director of this drama is Lee Jung Hyo (A Good Wife, Cruel City) and I'm curious to see his work in CM.

If there is a first love then there is probably a 2nd or current love. Korean dramas love to milk it so I hope it's just one episode flashback.
This is a 20 eps drama vs 277 eps of the Original.
I guess they can't have Lee Jun-ki in a drama without giving him a love interest.

1

We just can hope it won't follow the Entourage's route. sigh

@Sera The Ms Temper

What is wrong with Entourage? It may not be a type of a mainstream korean drama but it was better than Goblin.

Goblin was probably one of the worst produced Korean drama. Why it was a hit? Because it was heavily marketed drama.

1

@kiara

Even if there will be 2nd or current love, that won't make the drama a direct flop due to that alone.. no?

ABC Studio as the producer of original Criminal Minds is also take part in producing this remake. I don't think the format could be much off.

1

@logo
I'm being a little drama queen here because I love "Criminal Minds" for not milking any kind of romance but making the relationship of love and trust between the profilers the heart of the show.

I just strongly dislike romance in this kind of shows and I hope that it's kept in the background and very brief.

Entourage was not definitely crappy. Why did you say it was? If you say Goblin was great. Because to me Goblin was the crappiest. It's the most predictable drama. Ok, forget about being predictable as almost all k-dramas are like that. But TOO MUCH use of flashbacks was unbearable. Not just flashbacks but recycled scenes. The Canada scenes was probably used in all episodes. Well, those are the few of beautiful shots in the drama anyway. Aside from using recycled footages, they use too much slow motions. Why? So they just slow down the scene just to fill up the 60mins because they don't have enough good footage? It was just heavily marketed or advertised. The very reason it created the hype. They probably use the budget on marketing instead on actual production. Quality wise, the drama was terrible.

CM on the other hand, though it's also a Studio Dragon production just like Goblin, it's executive producer is different which is Taewon Ent- one of the best film & drama makers of Korea. And the perks? It's in partnership with ABC Studio to ensure that the drama maintains the CM value.

What's also good about this drama, it's already earning while filming through product placements or promos. The drama is also promoted direct to the community by making them involved which is to me a brilliant marketing strategy and cost effective.

I don't know about this young actress before and I think this drama is a good promo for her. She's be working with the best actors in Korea. We don't really know for sure if she's be the victim or the unsub or maybe neither. I have watch all CM series, I am very certain that she'd be in one episode only unless if the related case will be for two episodes. Jason Gideon- the main lead character of CM on its season 1&2 (only) had his story about his lovelife, as per my memory, it was only for one episode.

Criminal Minds is like that. Each individual main cast has it's own back story. Though CM-Suspect Behaviour & CM-Beyond Border characters aren't as developed as the original CM as they only have been in 1 season & 2 seasons respectively.

1. One of Emily's backstory was about her childhood boyfriend.
2. JJ was about her sister who committed suicide.
3. Derek Morgan was his abusive past in the hands of his football coach and mentor.

Their past actually leads them to be in this type of job which is a very psychologically challenging job.

Exactly.

I see some of those who jumped on branded this remake as something flop don't even know much about the original Criminal Minds. Not only Emily, JJ and Derek. Even Reid and Aaron also have their background stories. These people don't even follow and know much about this remake and the people behind this remake other than the very little info that tipsymocha provides them here and that's very little and all about LJG's characters only.

Those were brief and kept in the background. Koreans can go overboard with it because they don't think that the female viewers are capable of tuning in to watch a show without any kind of romance inserted in it even when it's not needed.

Love interest is unnecessary? Jason Gideon was on a date with his childhood girlfriend before she was murdered & David Rossi has had his dates too. hahaha Do you know how old these characters are? late 50's or early 60's...

Too much opinion without substance is quite offensive.

1

Did you read that it was kept brief and in the background? I'm worried that they'd go overboard with it? Is there something wrong with that?
I never said there was no romance. I said that it was unnecessary because this show can do without it.

Neither one of us know what they have planned for the show. This is where we speculate and I have my opinion just like you.
If you disagree then that's perfectly fine. I don't have a freaking problem with it.

0

Oh it's as good as saying that it is ok to defame something or someone because you have an opinion. Tsk tsk tsk

This drama hasn't been broadcasted yet and your giving your criticism already.

They can style her to look like 18 then Lee Joon Gi himself will do the younger counterpart. I saw few photos of him at the Hermes event. There's one photo that he looked like an 18-year old.

Great news! She is an excellent young actress and so pretty. Loved her in Six Flying Dragons, Signal and now in Queen for Seven Days. She's really building up a wonderfully impressive body of work at such a young age.

She and Baek Seung-hwan are sooo good in Seven Day Queen. They have better and more believable romantic chemistry than quite a few adult couples I've seen in Korean dramas! I haven't been this invested in the childhood romance portion of a sageuk since The Moon That Embraces the Sun.

Wow this is good news.
The first time I saw her was in Happy Together when she come with her dad, dance singer Park Nam Jung. She's a great dancer like her dad and I thought she'll become one too.
But then I saw her in Pride and Prejudice as Baek Jinhee's younger counterpart and her acting is great! I've been following her since then.
Wish her more good projects in the future!

I don't quite enjoy "the first love" storyline since it's too cliche but Korean drama could not run far from childhood romance. On the other side, may be this add up storyline is just to make the case more personal for our profilers instead of being straight out professional like in CSI.

Aww I thought at first that she will play the heroine for entire series because she's really good, how naive of me. I really like her and the prince as characters and actors.

It sounds like CM Korea wouldn't be a copy and paste from CM US. It would have been a waste. There is so much to this series that they can work on. The US version is flawed that I believe CM Korea can polish it and make a better version. One advantage of CM Korean is; it would have longer screen time with 60 minutes compared to US with only 43 minutes. The reason CM-US is rushed and so many holes in the story.

Though first love theme as a backstory is not new to CM as Emily Prentis' childhood boyfriend story was also in one of the episodes.

This is the only Korean drama I am anticipating the most.

The main character background stories are actually an integral part of their becoming a profiler. If I remember it correctly, one of Emily's background story about her boyfriend or bestfriend back in the day.

I don't know this young actress but I am looking forward for her performance in this drama. She is lucky as she would be working with the greats in K-Ent.

CM is my most anticipated Korean drama. I am so looking forward to Lee Joon Gi's next drama. It amazes me that his character is totally different from the last one. Wang So started in MLSHR at the age of 18 and grown to becoming Gwangjong at the age of 25. I think at the finale Gwangjong was approx between the age of 30-33. And here he comes in CM. I think he will play Hyun Joon with his real age which is at least 35years old.

I have watched all the three (3) CM-Series. I have no doubt that CM-Korea can make it better as comradeship is innate in Korean culture. The camaraderie & comradeship and the closeness of the team as family is, for me, the foundation of CM.

Why do people keep bringing up Entourage as a frame of comparison? These two dramas are in 2 completely different genres, so shouldn't Criminal Minds be compared to other remakes of procedural-type shows? Like the Good Wife? Or Solomon's Perjury? Which were both fire af?

Look I get it I'm tired of this first love trope too but it's weird to
1.) jump to conclusions just based on one plot point and
2.) compare this show to unrelated genres

One of the CM code of conduct: No romance within the team. So I expect there's no romance between their characters.

However, if there is bromance- LJG & MCH characters will be that equivalent except that they are in different genders. And in CM series has this concept.
