Lookout: Episodes 9-10

Suji and Do-han are anxious to bring down a common enemy, but are they working together or against one another? Unless they straighten that out, it’s possible that they won’t know success, which would leave some very bad people free. In order to achieve their goal, they need to get on the same page, but that requires communication, not so easy when they are both buried deeply in the shadows.

EPISODE 9 RECAP

A loud tick-tock magnifies the silence as Prosecutor Oh sits with Chief Prosecutor Yoon. When Prosecutor Oh understands that he’s expected to take the blame for everything related to Woo-sung’s case, he recalls Do-han’s advice to use his leverage against the chief prosecutor. Prosecutor Oh reminds the chief prosecutor that he knows enough to derail his nomination.

Chief Prosecutor Yoon offers to pour Prosecutor Oh a cup of tea and notes, “If you do too much, it overflows.” The hot tea spills over, and Prosecutor Oh drops and breaks his cup. He’s asked, “It can’t be fixed, can it?” Chief Prosecutor Yoon then cautions, “Don’t make me an enemy.”

In interrogation, Woo-sung denies the recorded claims about his release the year before. From behind the one-way mirror, Soon-ae tells Eun-joong that faced with Choi Myung-hoon’s testimony, Woo-sung admitted to kidnapping and attempted murder, but nothing else. Eun-joong concedes that they know nothing about how Woo-sung was released and Soon-ae worries that Suji’s efforts will be wasted if they can’t link Chief Prosecutor Yoon to the criminal.

Do-han presents his resignation to Chief Prosecutor Yoon since it was his idea to release Woo-sung the previous year to cover up Prosecutor Oh’s mistakes. Do-han then bows in belated congratulations for the chief prosecutor’s nomination and is asked, “Do you want to remove Prosecutor Oh so you can take his place?” Do-han can hardly contain himself as he answers, “I’d like to be useful to you.”

Chief Prosecutor Yoon asks what Do-han can do in return and he offers, “I will catch Jo Suji.” Do-han believes that the chief prosecutor is her real target and argues that an ally is needed on the joint investigative team who will catch her, yet protect the chief prosecutor.

At home, Do-han surveys an evidence board projected onto a wall that lists Yoo-na’s accident, the Missing Housewife Case (linked to Kyung-soo) and the Yian Apartment Murder Case (linked to Bomi). Do-han recalls Chief Prosecutor Yoon’s agreement to give him only one chance to catch Suji and wonders if he should follow his plan or take a dangerous shortcut. His television broadcasts the news that a sexual assault suspect was arrested after fifteen years.

At the hideout, Suji and Kyung-soo watch televised news of Prosecutor Oh’s resignation. Kyung-soo wonders why Chief Prosecutor Yoon didn’t resign and Suji mutters that he slipped away again. Do-han is behind the chief prosecutor when he announces a joint investigation to catch Suji. Kyung-soo recognizes him from Yoo-na’s case and applauds his survival skills as Bomi notes his close association to the chief prosecutor.

Chief Prosecutor Yoon makes it clear that Suji’s accomplices will be held responsible. Suji realizes that the direction of the investigation just shifted and Bomi suspects that Kyung-soo’s hacking left traces, but he insists it was flawless. Suji urges caution and explains she’s worried the others are in danger.

Wearing a patrol officer’s vest and hat, Suji exits an apartment building, only to be stopped by another officer. When she runs, he catches her and throws her against a car.

And then we rewind through the previous thirty hours, showing us the highlights and stopping just before Do-han enters the Joint Investigation Headquarters. He greets the team as Soon-ae awkwardly returns the sentiment. Do-han declares it the perfect day to catch Suji.

Eun-joong walks in and Do-han reminds him that he works in the countryside. Not anymore, though; Eun-joong announces that he’s joined the team and Do-han quietly inquires if he used his father’s influence. Do-han laughs in delight when Eun-joong answers that he’s there to catch Suji because he can’t allow someone like Do-han to do it.

A prosecutor enters and introduces himself as PARK JOON-PYO, head of the joint team. Do-han becomes curious when he notices a glance pass between Eun-joong and Prosecutor Park.

Later, Soon-ae catches up to Eun-joong and he explains that they can’t let Suji remain a fugitive because her situation worsens with each crime that she commits. After she walks away, Eun-joong remembers his meeting with Prosecutor Park the night before.

Prosecutor Park had asked Eun-joong to join him in Seoul and promised to help him get revenge for his demotion. He explained that he was forced to follow orders the year before and suggests that two powerless men should work together.

Prosecutor Park added that not all prosecutors were loyal to Chief Prosecutor Yoon, plus others on the outside were ready to help. He had announced his appointment to head the joint team and urged Eun-joong to call if he wanted to join him.

Now in the present, from a short distance away, Do-han observes Eun-joong.

Bomi gazes at a family photo, remembering the horrible moment she saw her father in bed, bleeding from his abdomen, and her mother dragged away by her feet. Bomi whispers to her family, “I’m sorry,” and breaks down in tears. The doorbell interrupts her and Bomi sees that the courier just delivered another envelope.

Kyung-soo tells Suji that they have a new mission — a photo and national ID number accompanied by a message: “This is the first and final warning. Only do the work that you’re ordered to do.” The others know the message is aimed at Suji, but she ignores Bomi’s criticisms and asks about the man in the photo.

Kyung-soo recognizes him as the sexual assault suspect who was arrested after fifteen years, but Suji argues that faces of suspects can’t be made public. Bomi notes, “That’s the difference between the news and the internet.” When Suji worries about the legal penalties, Kyung-soo promises to use information that others already hacked.

Meanwhile, at the high school, a group of girls scribbles on Suji’s wanted poster. When they call her a psycho, it’s too much for Soon-ae’s daughter, Se-won, who argues that Suji is a mother who lost her daughter. The girls consider Se-won odd because she sides with a criminal even though her mother is a detective. That’s news to Shi-wan, so the girls explain that Se-won tells her mother what happens at school, and that’s why no one bothers her. Shi-wan looks at Se-won’s desk and a corner of his mouth curls up.

Shi-wan’s mother meets him outside the school with a new driver/bodyguard who drives them to his private academy. His mother informs him that he will be escorted by the man because Suji has resurfaced, and Shi-wan smiles at his mother’s concern.

However, that smile triggers another memory for Mom, who flashes back to the chaotic scene in the interrogation room when Suji had rushed at Shi-wan. When Mom had gazed down at Shi-wan, she’d seen him smile to himself. (She knows!) And now in the present, as soon as Mom turns away, Shi-wan’s smile disappears.

Prosecutor Park starts a team meeting and wonders why Suji pursued Woo-sung, who had nothing to do with her daughter’s death. Soon-ae believes that Suji intended to expose the cover up of Woo-sung’s case. Eun-joong thinks that would support a claim that Shi-wan’s crime was also covered up.

Prosecutor Park asks why accomplices were mentioned at the press conference and Do-han shows up to explain. The police assumed that Suji was aided by someone close to her, but it was actually a complete stranger. Do-han claims that her accomplice will be found within the hour because cyber investigators set a trap.

Suji watches the courthouse from her car while the latest target, Lee Jang-soo, is on trial. Bomi is confused, because the charges of special robbery and rape don’t explain the victim’s death. A flashback to 2002 shows a young girl running from a man — she ran into the street, she was hit by a truck. The parents arrived too late at the hospital and her father collapsed outside as he processed the news that his daughter Se-im jaywalked and was hit by a truck.

The father had overheard two doctors question why the girl’s underwear would be missing in a simple car accident, but they’d dismissed it. Se-im’s father scoured the area near the accident site and found her underwear, and he’d sobbed in agony as he realized that his daughter was sexually assaulted.

In the present, Bomi struggles to understand why the law doesn’t hold Lee Jang-soo responsible for Se-im’s death.

Suji and Bomi watch as Se-im’s father stumbles out of the courthouse and in voiceover we learn the court’s verdict: “Not guilty.” Suji follows Lee Jang-soo after he exits the courthouse and boards a bus and laments, “No one will know what the man sitting next to them has done.”

Suji instructs Kyung-soo to find all records related to Lee Jang-soo’s case. She then texts him to determine if the case is connected to Chief Prosecutor Yoon and to keep it a secret from Bomi.

The cyber team alerts Prosecutor Park that the hacker broke into the criminal information system. Prosecutor Park compliments Do-han, but questions how he could issue orders on his own — and Eun-joong questions how Do-han knew the hacker would breach their system.

Do-han dramatically explains that Suji’s upload of Woo-sung’s confession was an attack against the judicial branch and reasons that she wouldn’t ignore a case like Lee Jang-soo’s. The cyber investigators announce that they expect to have the hacker’s location soon and Do-han enjoys his victory.

When Do-han pulls out his phone and tries to slip out, Eun-joong asks if he’s sending updates to someone in real time. Do-han returns the phone to his pocket and has a grin in place when he turns around. He objects when Eun-joong suggests that officers should check on Lee Jang-soo, but Eun-joong correctly reasons that Suji must be after him, so Prosecutor Park allows it.

Do-han turns away to hide his concern and check on his phone, which was connected all along. The priest on the other end heard everything and Do-han calls him later to explain, “We have a slight twist to deal with. I’ll leave it to you if it doesn’t go as planned.”

Suji follows Lee Jang-soo to his apartment, where he finds his taxi littered with leaves and flyers. Kyung-soo gives her the details about Se-mi’s investigation, which was mishandled from the beginning because it was treated as a car accident. Lee Jang-soo was only caught this time when he tried to sell Se-mi’s belongings.

Se-mi’s assault can’t be pursued because the statute of limitations has expired, so Suji advises that the robbery charge is the only chance to convict Lee Jang-soo. But with only days until the statute of limitations deadline, they must find some evidence.

Suji snaps a photo of the taxi’s license plate and Kyung-soo verifies that Lee Jang-soo owned the vehicle at the time of Se-mi’s assault and adds that his business was suspended.

But just as Suji places a tracker under his car, Bomi gets a text: “Stop working on the case right now.” Kyung-soo’s computer suddenly lights up with a warning.

The cyber investigators have tracked the hacker’s location, and Do-han watches as Prosecutor Park dispatches Soon-ae’s team. Kyung-soo panics and Bomi worries that they’re about to be arrested. Su-ji tells Kyung-soo to get out, but he argues that the police are stealing their server’s data — if he leaves, they police will get everything.

Bomi suddenly warns Suji to run, because the police are headed to Lee Jang-soo’s apartment. Suji starts running, but finds every direction blocked as police approach from every side.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Surrounded, Suji pulls down her cap and runs off.

Meanwhile, Chief Prosecutor Yoon receives a text, “We found the hacker. We’re also tracking Jo Suji.”

On their way to the scene in a police van, Byung-jae sees Jin-ki busy with his phone and teases him about it. He grabs for the phone, but Soon-ae yells at them to get serious.

Kyung-soo is hard at work covering up his tracks as police cars arrive at their destination in a run-down neighborhood. Soon-ae’s team is followed closely by the reporter who confronted Prosecutor Oh about Woo-sung’s case (Episode 1).

On her monitors, Bomi watches nervously as Suji tries to evade the patrol officers. At one point, Suji tries to pass by unnoticed in the apartment building corridors, but the female officer notices her suspicious behavior and grabs Suji’s arm as she passes. When she tries to use her radio, Suji overtakes her.

Soon-ae’s team runs up flights of stairs as Suji walks down some stairs, wearing the patrol officer’s vest and hat. Bomi directs her to get to her car and exit onto the road. That’s when another officer spots her, and when Suji runs away, we catch up to the earlier scene where she was pinned against a car.

But Suji fights back successfully, managing to knock the officer unconscious. Thankfully, she reaches her car without further ado.

Prosecutor Park is informed that Suji has been located. He tells Do-han and Eun-joong that they make a good team, but Eun-joong cautions that no one has been arrested yet. Do-han cockily claims that it’s all but certain, but tenses when he looks away.

Suji manages to drive away as Soon-ae’s team arrives in front of a door and pounds on it, and Kyung-soo looks up concern. The cops bust through the door…

…into a room full of hackers and their computers. Kyung-soo throws his hands up in victory, having managed to evade the police’s tracking program and erase all evidence of his location.

In interrogation, Byung-jae accuses one of the hackers of fabricating the connection between Suji and Chief Prosecutor Yoon, but he insists the information came from a legitimate source. When asked if Suji is his source, the hacker wishes it was true, because he’s her fan. He describes Suji as beautiful and declares, “She’s the lookout, seeking justice for the weak.”

The mood at headquarters is somber as Soon-ae reports, “I think we got the wrong person.” After Jin-ki verifies that Suji got away, Do-han blames the police and turns to Eun-joong for support, but he asks if the assumption about an accomplice was wrong. Do-han acts pleased that his wrong guess cleared the chief prosecutor. Frustrated that Suji eluded the task force, Prosecutor Park barks at the team to come up with a plan.

On televisions, the news reports that hackers were captured, but they had no connection to Suji. As a result, the conspiracy theory that threatened Chief Prosecutor Yoon’s nomination was eliminated.

Do-han meets with Chief Prosecutor Yoon, who reminds him that he only had one chance, but Do-han wasn’t told that it was limited to one day. He argues that catching Suji won’t solve the chief prosecutor’s problems; he has to shut down the rumors that have plagued his nomination. Chief Prosecutor Yoon replies, “You have a brain for shallow tricks, a tongue for speech and audacity,” then adds, “but you’re not a good liar.” He tears Do-han’s resignation in half and instructs him, “Don’t make excuses anymore.”

As Do-han turns to leave, Chief Prosecutor Yoon reminds him that he claimed that they met before, but he doesn’t remember Do-han. Carefully, Do-han admits that it was probably meaningless to the chief prosecutor and then brightly claims it was at an especially impressive lecture during his law school days. When Chief Prosecutor Yoon dismisses him, Do-han walks out with a serious look.

Suji changes the license plate on her car as Kyung-soo apologizes that she was almost caught because of him. He explains that the police expected him and set a trap to catch him. Suji finds it strange that an accomplice was mentioned at the press conference and a tracing program was embedded on the police site in case of hacking — it’s too perfect for the scenario. Kyung-soo wonders how the cops anticipated their plans when the only person who knew their target was Lee Jang-soo is their boss.

Kyung-soo thinks Suji may be right in suspecting that their boss is a prosecutor. He suggests that their boss sold them out, but then Kyung-soo acknowledges they were warned in time for him to to evade the cyber team. Suji argues that whoever knows about them has access to the investigation in real time.

Kyung-soo accidentally lets slip that Lee Jang-soo isn’t connected to Chief Prosecutor Yoon, which he was supposed to keep secret from Bomi. Bomi isn’t pleased to hear that she’s being left out, while Suji says that all she asked was if their mission was connected to the chief prosecutor.

Suji wants to discover the identity of their boss, but Bomi fears that he will abandon them, and she needs the data that he has. Her voice rises as she claims that without that data, they can’t catch the criminal, and Bomi will never be able to leave her room. Suji worries that they don’t know when they’ll be caught, her voice getting shrill as she points out that the chief prosecutor and his son are still living good lives. Kyung-soo urges the noonas to calm down, thinking a reconciliation between them as unlikely as the two Koreas reuniting.

Bomi insists she doesn’t know now to reach their boss, but Suji reminds her that he sent her a text. Kyung-soo suggests that they ask the boss, which is another slip — Suji believed that he was unreachable, but clearly the other two have their ways. Suji pledges to find him herself and hangs up.

Concerned that the noonas won’t be able to reconcile, Kyung-soo is struck with an idea and leaves the hideout. Bomi is about to call him when something on her monitor catches her eye. She zooms in on footage of Lee Jang-soo’s license plate as his car drives off and wonders where he went. When we cut to Lee Jang-soo, we see that he’s driving the streets in the search of an intoxicated, unaccompanied young woman.

Suji follows Kyung-soo after he boards a bus, who ignores a call from Bomi. She tries Suji next, who also ignores her call. Frantic, Bomi insists to herself, “I don’t care,” but the image of Se-mi’s father weeping outside of the courthouse haunts her.

Out on the streets, a young woman boards a cab and assures someone over the phone not to worry. She insists that she’s fine and hangs up as Lee Jang-soo asks for her destination.

Kyung-soo enters a church and Suji watches from a side door as he writes a note, enters the confessional and exits seconds later. Suji remains hidden when Kyung-soo lights the red candle and turns it so the symbol can be seen.

The priest is at his desk when he gets a call, and pulls out a second phone from a box. It has a new text, which reads, “Father, I came for confession.”

As he leaves the church, Kyung-soo finally answers a call from Bomi, who warns, “We have big problem.” She informs him that Lee Jang-soo might commit another crime.

Suji enters the confessional through the same door that Kyung-soo used, unaware that someone is on the other side of the screen. It’s Do-han, who averts his face, but Suji apologizes, “I didn’t know you were here, Father.”

Do-han invites her to begin her confession, and when she hesitates, he suggests she can return another time. Suji wants to know what the young man before her talked about, but Do-han replies that a priest has a duty to keep secrets.

Admitting that she’s not ready for a confessional, Suji turns to leave, but pauses to ask if priests pray for other people. She explains that she committed a big sin and finds that she can’t pray. This time when Do-han invites her to continue, Suji sits down.

Suji confesses that she had daughter, whom she hopes is happy where ever she is. Even though Suji committed a crime, she wants her daughter to know that she hasn’t done anything shameful, and hopes that the girl is still proud of her mother. Suji’s voice thickens when she asks if Yoo-na can appear in her dreams every now and then, so she can see her face.

Suji is grateful when Do-han promises, “I will pray for your daughter.” After she exits the confessional, Do-han wipes his eyes and struggles to collect himself.

The priest walks into the church as Suji leaves the confessional, and she instinctively turns her face away. They pass by each other quietly, but it’s as she’s walking away that she remembers that she met the priest once before in the hospital. She runs back to the church.

Inside the confessional, Do-han passes Kyung-soo’s note to the priest.

Boss, what should I do? The sisters are fighting a lot! It’s all because you give us missions without allowing us to ask questions. So, can you tell us what your plan is now? Of course, I’m not suspicious of you. So, you shouldn’t get upset. Promise me!

It closes with a couple of hearts.

The priest observes, “They are becoming suspicious of you. You shouldn’t come here anymore.” Do-han simply answers, “It will be over soon.”

Suji ignores Kyung-soo’s call when she arrives back at the church. She’s waiting when the priest exits the confessional and comments that that he’s not surprised to see her, nor is he reporting her to the authorities. He answers that she must need a place to rest and offers to leave her alone.

When he walks by, Suji reminds the priest that they’ve passed each other before, but he pretends he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She asks if he made contact, and assumes he’s the one who warned them in time to evade the police. She wants to know how he has access to the investigation when he’s at a church and asks about the person behind him, but the priest laughs and claims that he doesn’t understand her questions.

Suji grabs the priest’s wrist when he tries to walk away and admits that his eyes tell her that he knows everything. Still, he sticks to his story and walks away trying to keep his thoughts hidden.

That’s when Suji picks up a call from Kyung-soo, who alerts her that Lee Jang-soo has a woman in his taxi, and Bomi asks her to help them.

Suji reminds them that they were warned not to work on this case and checks with her team that they’re willing to proceed anyway. When Bomi answers yes, Suji asks where Lee Jang-soo went and Kyung-soo notes that the two Koreas reunited after all.

Kyung-soo and Bomi give Suji details on Lee Jang-soo’s location as she walks by the confessional — but instead of leaving the church, Suji is struck with a belated suspicion. Recalling that the priest left the confessional through the same door she’d used, Suji approaches the room again — and this time walks to the other door, the one for the other side of the confessional. Steeling herself, she opens the door.

COMMENTS

At this point I’m all kinds of confused. Is Do-han actually going to deliver Suji to Chief Prosecutor Yoon, or is it some kind of set-up? I honestly can’t tell, and I appreciate that the lines aren’t clearly drawn just yet. On the other hand, I’m frustrated that the Lookout trio has had such little success in spite of their efforts. They did manage to catch Woo-sung, but his connection to Chief Prosecutor Yoon wasn’t proved and Prosecutor Oh was the only other liability. I struggle with the life that Suji, Bomi, and Kyung-soo lead, hidden in the shadows, while Chief Prosecutor Yoon and Shi-wan are living large. I want to see the scales start to tip in favor of our tarnished good guys, soon.

Do-han took a dangerous risk with the team and they know it. Everyone became someone else’s target and now the team is suspicious about their invisible leader. I would welcome a change in the team’s dynamic if Do-han were to be discovered and become more directly involved with them. He’d certainly clash with Suji, but I wonder how he would relate to Bomi and Kyung-soo. It would certainly prevent Kyung-soo from being the only one to referee the girls’ disagreements. It was telling that the event that forced him to contact their leader was the face-off between Bomi and Su-ji, not the fact that they were almost caught by the police.

We are finally learning a bit about Kyung-soo’s and Bomi’s backstory and my suspicion is that the rape case is particularly meaningful to Bomi. She’s haunted by the father’s grief-stricken face and agreed to ignore their boss’ instructions to drop the case. Bomi certainly suffered a serious trauma at some point in her life, but her surveillance work proves that she is driven to catch criminals. There is more to know about what happened to Bomi’s family and how it affected her, but hopefully her search for justice will go far to heal her wounds. It’s what the team has in common and the glue that keeps them together.

As much as Do-han is out and about, his persona is just as buried as the others. He has such little authentic contact with anyone, he’s a mystery, perhaps even to himself. It’s what happens when an obsession consumes someone, they lose themselves in the process. We know so much about Suji, even her moment of truth in the confessional revealed something about her thoughts, but there is little we know about Do-han. In fact, his role as faux priest provided him a rare opportunity to let down his guard and connect with another person. He was clearly moved by Suji’s desire to make her daughter proud and I imagine that he shares a similar wish in regards to his father. It’s crushing to live for someone while at the same time missing them, but that’s what survivors do.

I only recently started watching this show, and I have to say---I'm sooo glad I did. It's hitting all the right notes for me. I like the complexity of the relationships so much---who has whose "best interest" at heart, who is deceiving who, etc. Also, I have to say, I've never liked Kim Young Kwang that much, but I am LOVING him in this. He is killing it.

I also like the sort of ambiguity of everyones motives. Is Do-han only orchestrating everything to achieve his own ends (read: revenge) regardless of who gets hurt along the way or is he genuinely trying to fix things and is part of the Lookout team?

I think everyone is wondering on that question to be honest.

Personally at this moment when thinking about this episode itself without regarding the next one, I was hardcore thinking that he was in it for himself. He just managed to pick up a couple of strays that he was able to pull around nicely instead. I am very interested though to when the team finally becomes aware of who their leader is.

Also does Do Han know where they live and stuff? I was always curious about that. They have such secure locations so I would assume that Do Han would keep an eye on them but there is no indication that he has been keeping an eye on them.

Which does indicate that he trusts them to a certain degree.

yeah, we are all curious on how 'good' his personality is too....is he just a selfish jerk to make use of the team members to seek revenge on the chief prosecutor disregarding their wellbeing and interest or is he the opposite of what I've mentioned ??

Aaah I have been a fan of Kim Young Kwang since the drama... D-Day I think that was the drama that tipped me over to him. But legit he is killing this role and I love it!

AND YES! It is the way that the relationships intertwine with one another and create all this discourse that would not be there otherwise which makes the show move just that little bit faster and make our hearts beat faster as well!

He was so good in D-day, the drama that made a sort-of fan of his. The scene where he cried over his brother broke my heart so much. I'm liking his performance here too even while I fins his character's smarminess largely annoying. I actually started this drama for my girl crush Lee Si-young and her grief as a mother who loses her child is powerful and keeps me coming back every week, it also helps that the story is really engaging by itself. This drama and Circle are my Monday/Tuesday dramas right now. Enjoying both immensely.

KYK is good in the drama, as is KSH (Prosecutor Oh in Lookout) but it's a typical medical drama. I stuck throughout and didn't regret as there were great moments of dilemma - humanity vs power and money, but there were some things that could've definitely been better executed. :D

In Reply 1988, there is this sweetheart of a single dad and he's played by the actor of Prosecutor Yoon. There is also a single mom, played by the actress for Soon-Ae.

2

Omo

I definitely went "hey its Sunwoo omma" and "Taekie appa" while watching this drama without really thinking about the fact that once all the cards are laid out on the table, they would be on opposing sides.

I hope they do have a scene together, because I love Soonae's actress and I want to see her scream at Prosecutor Yoon

I've been wanting to watch D-Day for a while but because of all the new shows being released I dont have the time >.<

hahah dont worry I know the feels of this, there isn't much romance but I have managed to watch the drama twice. I am not one to rewatch dramas so when I rewatch a drama I normally think it is super duper good.

I honestly think it is worth peoples time but then yet again I might be wrong~ It just might have some catnip that I am addicted to.

I should move that to the top of my list then.... LOL

It is one that you wont be disappointed with. Well that is what I think personally anyway~

He is ridiculously hot in this show. I guess he's one of those guys who just looks better dressed up? Or maybe it's the personality of the character? Cuz in his previous show he was playing this ex-gangster chef and even tho he took his shirt off I wasn't all, "RRAAOOWWW" But then that show was kind of a clunker. Here, he started off seeming just slimy/sleazy but then we find out he's actually a (ruthless) good guy pulling all these strings and suddenly he's 1000x more interesting, plus he rocks those suits.

I just marathoned through all the episodes. I love it!!! Like every single thing about it. Each episode keeps me on the edge. And i love the bickering of the three musketeers .

LSY is amazingggg. I haven't seen her in anything before but she is totally selling the badass vigilante who is a grieving mother also.

And now we are going to focus on KSG! ... YES!!! ... i'm biased but i love the girl .

My reaction to KYK is different from the rest. i have usually found him a pretty decent actor in other shows but here i find him being the weakest link.

His character is complex and layered. His acting is not. I keep thinking how another actor would have nailed the part. His take as the slimy prosecutor is too OTT. It just lacks any subtlety. I find myself irritated by him at times and i can't wait for the show to go back to the adorable trio.

I never thought of it that way I have been loving Kim Young Kwan in this but I am bias so I guess that is probably why. But now that you pointed it out I can see what you mean, I just have been trying hard not to read too much into the character and just hope that they will give us some more reason to love this character.

AND YES OMG legit though both girls are nailing their roles and I can't help myself falling deeper and deeper in love with both of them.

But yes my favourite parts of the episodes is when they all are interacting with one another. I really do want to see Su Ji acting like a mom to both of them, even though their age gap isn't that large she is a mom. So I think it would be cute to see that side of her towards the other two.

That's my problem with Jang Do Han, the character is so complex with many layers, but the actor himself is not that amazing in potraying the character. I've been thinking what if he and Kim Tae Hoon were to switch the role. It could be because I never found him a good actor from the beginning that I could be biased. He is serviceable when he is acting all annoying, but I can't connect when he has to show he has complex mind when he's alone. It took me until epi 9 to actually didn't skip his scene, previously I skipped mostly and just read the recap to know the more details.

I thought this episode is the weakest so far, but I still enjoyed it a lot and I'm finding that I'm warming up to Do Han, even though his motives are more frustratingly murky than ever. I can't distinguish what was part of his original plan and what was altered due to circumstances. Looks like he did want Kyung Soo to fall for that trap so that KS will point authorities to the other hackers - which will in turn discredit the rumors about Yoon - which will allow Do Han to ingratiate himself further with Yoon? And it looks like Do Han hasn't given Bomi her revenge yet. After all these years, he has been stringing her along with hope. The desperation must be strong if she can pledge loyalty without seeing a reward all these years.

And holy crap - Shi Wan's mom knows her son likely killed Yoona. I'm glad she has with suffer the knowledge that her son is a monster. Even if she didn't believe he killed Yoona, just seeing her son smile like a psychopath at the little girl's death is disturbing. She has to be afraid he'll kill again.

Gosh yeessss, although it is a frightening to think that your own son could be a murderer I have to admit I dont feel bad for the mom at all. Though if the mom had a different personality I would probably feel a bit more sympathetic to her but seriously sheltering your son like that will not make them into a better person.

Yep I agree with you here as well, I am kinda wanting to see them start to distrust their leader and make Do Han give them a reason to trust him. I just feel like it is a bit sad that they are blindly following him but hopefully with this tension we will be able to gain some more discourse within our hidden team.

She's his mom so the need to protect his son, she cant easily let go of it but the feeling of dread that his son is a psyco she cant shake it off either. I pity her. The dilemma of being a mother of a criminal. Condemn his son or condemn others. The struggle of it all.

Most of psycho killers originated by abusive parents or a tremendous crime they witness that happened to their loved ones or their loved ones do unto others. The impact of that mix with sever mental issues. Perfect formula in making a psycho killer.

Woah, wtf Do-han, cutting it close much?! Was hoping Soo-ji actually found him in then and there so she can give him some well-deserved spanking! I get that his point is to create an impeccable I-am-Yoon's-minion image, but wow, his getting overboard with his puppet-master act; even if he has foolproof contingency plan. Am also a bit confused how he could've convinced the Joint Force about his "investigation" on hacker-honeypot, etc, wouldn't they be wondering how he can be that smart..?
The scene between them at the confession booth is touching, tho, feels for Soo-ji much *sniff* She was really chipping his conscience there. I guess with Kyung-soo & Bo-mi, he doesn't really have to think too much of casualty since they are somewhat off the grid, but that's so not the case with Soo-ji.
His MO have shown that he took "shortcut" by using sensational case that crops up timely, like the rape case and, I assume, Yoo-na's case. I feel a bit better believing he did not have any involvement in Yoo-na's death, but still, if he is he just treating these cases as a bait, guess the show really wants us to hate him...
Kyung-soo is still the joy of this show, such a sweetie pie. He wrote the cutest secret missive ever ^^ Had always thought Bo-mi got agoraphobia, but now starting to think that she super afraid a certain somebody might find her. Also, am glad the show left Soo-ji's police instinct intact, by her recognizing the priest and noticing the booth's light. The newly appeared Prosecutor Park seems suspicious...

I am hoping and praying that he had nothing to do with Yoo Na's death. I really would hate that, I am already a bit touchy on the character because he is stringing the musketeers along with only words that they will get their revenge. But why has Bo Mi had to wait so long?? She has probably been following the leader the longest hence the reason she is scared of him deserting them, which is totally understandable.
She has spent years following him and quietly waiting for her chance to get revenge but there has been no word from him.

My take on it is that with or without Do Han, Yoo Na's murder would have been swept under the rug since Shi Wan is the Chief Prosecutor's son and there, but Do Han used her murder to position him and Prosecutor Oh as being the ones used for the cover up and not some other prosecutor.

On the flip side, if he wasn't on a decade long revenge plan, he could have probably found a way to prosecute Shi Wan. But now he's delaying it as he waits for all his chess pieces to be where he plans for them to be.

Yeah, I had been assuming that he had helped Bo Mi already and was irked to find that he had her waiting for so long.

I just honestly hope they address Bomi's story nicely. She's well-written and the PTSD of her character has been handled quite well (there's a few jabs here and there, but ultimately, she IS left alone to her own coping method of not leaving the house whatsoever, and she's not mocked or forced out of her comfort zone for 'not putting it too much effort to combat her fear'). Kim Seulgi really killed it in her role, and I'm happy to see her breaking out of her typecast to prove that she's more than capable of pulling off complex, faceted characters with inner turmoil.

Also, I've FINALLY realised why the male characters never connected with me- they're written with very broad brushstrokes, compared to the females. Sooji and Bomi have had their motivations laid bare before us, and their personalities are a result of past and prevailing trauma. They're interesting and compelling to watch, with equally amazing skillsets in different aspects that hook a viewer instantly, especially in Bomi's unorthodox nature of virtual surveillance.

I barely, if ever, feel anything for the 3 male leads, can't even say I like Eunjoong at this point because his character has been watered down to 'desperately stop Dohan at all costs + comic relief'. I do want to like Kyungsoo, but as TeriYaki rightfully pointed out, he's really only just there to mediate the two ladies and also comic relief, with little exploration or exposition of the characters. It almost feels as though Taehoon is just adlibbing his way through his character for the sake of adding meat to Eunjoong because it's either shown MUCH later or Eunjoong is just that bland. It's really unfortunate, considering all the potential this show had, and I know I'm being overly critical when it's only been 5 episodes, but if so much weight is placed upon both ladies nearly half the show in, I don't know how much time they can allocate for the rest of the cast- especially their lead, which I've repeatedly pointed out over and over that there's a trail of crumbs about his motivations, but nothing actually concrete to make the viewers think.

Gosh yes I am so proud of Kim Seulgi, she is such an amazing actor and I am so glad people are falling for her >////< Gosh she is such an adorable cutie pie~!!
But yes the way they have handled her character is amazing and I am super excited to see her come out of the house. Because she has to at one point or another right? I just wanna see her give Kyung Soo a good whack on the head XD I just think their interactions in person would be even more cuter~!!

But yeah I totally understand what you mean when talking about Kyungsoo... But being a Shawol I am on a bias side here and have been loving every part of his existence within the drama XD

I am really hoping for them to give us some more info on Do Han's motives, I just want them to make me find a reason to like the character. Despite it being amazing to see the eye candy the character isn't doing much for me. He sits there and follows the orders of those above him. There have been moments where we see a darker side to the character (which I have been loving) But I just want them to give me a small cookie. EVEN A CRUMB WOULD BE FINE!! I just want a motive!!!

We do know that he wanna seek revenge on CP Yoon for his father's unjustly sentence years ago...but we don't know how much he is ready to sacrifice for his revenge and among the sacrifices, does it consist of innocent ppl like his team members ??

Spoilers : this show actually reminds me of Pied Piper whereby the antagonist have the similar kind of (revenge) motives (and showing the world how unjust the society is etc) , but he did it at the expense of pulling innocent ppl into his 'web' and manipulating them to do stuff for him, and even killing them or caused them to die indirectly ....

I love Pied Piper, and so far I think Pied Piper is better than Lookout....so I highly recommended it !!

1

I greatly recommend Pied Piper but Yoon Heesung riled people up to fight for him BUT wasn't afraid of getting his hands dirty either. He only did a certain spoiler act because he feared hurting the only person he cared for in this world, and as compared to Dohan, Heesung actually did see his allies as well, allies, even if he was using him. Dohan doesn't seem to be able to deobjectify his views towards his own allies, so much so he's even willing to pull the plug on revenge that he's AWARE is important to the others but not him (assuming, again, if he's the leader). Heesung despised himself and was willing to go all the way down an irrevocable path to prove a point and set himself up for suicide- Dohan isn't showing any of that, at least, not at the moment.

Thus why I say Dohan's character feels like incoherent brain fuzz, as though the writer can't seem to decide on his core personality and when he's able to become a sympathetic figure :'D

I am loving this show. What lifts this above other thrillers is Do Han; he's so deliciously poised between good and evil (for now) and his character is what keeps me hooked.

He's worse than the stock bad boy with heart of gold trope. There's a mean and cruel streak to how Kim Young kwang is playing the character, and you're unsure whether to fully trust him.

And that's what makes all the tiiinnnyy moments when he lets down his guard to show his true feelings, so intriguing. And even more so when he shows he's worried about the team.

His motives are unclear for now and Show is taking its time to unfold them, which is great.

So while there could be plot holes, overall it's a thrilling ride with great characters.

Just to add, I must give thumbs up to Su Ji who seemed to be the ONLY ONE questioning the leader's real motives....Bo Mi and KS are kinda more trusting towards him which I don't know why....what (good things) had he done previously to them to win their trust and loyalty completely that they do the missions without questioning anything ?? Of cos as Su JI is a cop previously, so she's naturally suspicious of anything, especially if the leader do not show himself at all and have not helped the dual in their revenge or finding justice for their cases...

I just want to know how long they have been working for him. Also Bo Mi would not have the skills she has now back then so I want to know the backstory to how she became so good at surveillance and stuff.

But some good flashbacks to them starting out would be amazing.

1

Yes agree. While I enjoy the show, there are some gaps which would have made the plot developments flow smoothly. Like, why isn't there a scene of them discussing how they got involved in this group? Especially when Suji got recruited a year ago? And this episode would have been wholly appropriate too - Suji questioning them now, if she hadn't before, how each of them got involved with Leader.

Hope this gets shown further down the road.

3

True, and also how Bo Mi and Kwang So got their skills....how they got trained and whatsoever...everything is so mysterious on this team and the leader ...like many questions popping up... I feel like the writer left a lot of plot-holes (unless all the qns being answered later in the show)....

I do wish though that the show would give us a bit more of his true nature. I did love the moment where his facade fell ever so slightly while Su Ji was confessing to him. I would love some more moments like that.

Thank you for the recaps TeriYaki! I, like the rest of us here, am confused too! And I was so worried in this episode that the team was falling apart! I guess that's what happens when you are working in the dark and nothing is clear, you start to doubt, and don't know who to trust anymore. The 3 of them questioning their leader is a major point, how can they blindly trust that he will indeed deliver on his promises to them, to help them in their personal cases??! How do they know if he is really working with them or just using them?! Having never met him, it does indeed take a huge leap of faith to decide to do his bidding. I am glad they are starting to question him, as as they are going right now they are starting to waver and losing their strength/unity as a team. It is really time for their leader to take command of his team and reinstate trust and cooperation.

I was so worried when no one picked up their phone. I was mad at Suji for pretty much cutting her team off, yes she needs a breather and needs some time to herself to follow her own ideas, but when you are part of a team, you need to consult with them first, you just don't take off on your own and leave them. Suji not picking up her phone because she doesn't want to argue with Bomi was a huge no-no. With the kind of work that they do, when your colleagues call you pick up, as it could be a matter of life and death! And I don't think Bomi would call her just to discuss the weather...I hope they all learn from this! At the same time, well, maybe Bomi could have just texted them so even if they don't want to talk they can at least know what's going on?! I guess they need to establish a protocol for emergency situations....

I was just thinking at least one thing that is out of the way with this episode is that the priest is not Yuna's father. It was hard to tell at the hospital as it was such a quick glance, did they really have a look at each other or were they just passing each other, so at least now that is clear...

Dohan in the confessional is so vulnerable there. The scenes are short but he displays so much emotions there...kudos to KYK! I am really liking him here.

I wasn't sure how to take the whole "we need catch fugitive Jo Suji" focus here...is she really the worst criminal out there?! I understand it's because of Chief Prosecutor Yoon, and yes she is our heroine, but does it make sense that there is so much coverage and a special unit assigned just to catch her?! Yes she is badass, but is she really Korea's most wanted?! With fans?! Still, this show is exciting and I am looking forward to our vigilante team finally coming together as a whole, yes that includes you leader, maybe it's time to show yourself. Maybe once everyone is on the same page, and not bickering at each other or doubting each other, they will get the results they want.

I think even Do Han don't understand himself. He made the team as a selfish way to get revenge to Yoon seung Ro. He intend to sell the team at first since it will be easier for him to get Yoon seung ro acknowledgement. But then as he keeps thinking he kinda warms up to them and actually unknowingly care for them. I was shock that he let go of his mask when Eun joong suggested they follow the crimical bcoz he knew Suji will get caught.

From what I see, Do han is a selfish man at first and still very much the same. He care for the team but he dont love them. I hope the priest can help to warm him up. Revenge is a tiring thing and his effort to get yoon seung ro bit by bit made him lose his humanity.

I keep reminding myself that we are only at epi 5. I feel like have been watching half of this drama at least lol.

I don't know, I just don't want Do Han to be actively in this group and suddenly turn to good character. What I want is, when the trio found about him, they end up make a deal with each other. I don't want them to actually get along with him. I also want the Priest to turn his back on him for some reasons and work more closely with the team. I know they still need informations from Do Han for their missions, but I want it to be based on deals, i want them to be on cautious, actively working as a team, not only have to follow Do Han in everything and don't also trust him blindly. It's good to have Su Ji around, because she managed to create Bomi & Kyung Soo suspicions about their leader. Otherwise these two puppies may have to spend their entire life working at the back before they get justice for their own case.

HAhah omg the feels of this is so real. This new messed up way of counting episodes is legit starting to do me over.

I can't see them getting along to be honest, not the way that our three musketeers do anyway. That would be cool with the priest suddenly going towards the trio more but at the same time I want there to be a good intricate reason. From what i can tell these two have been working together for a while so that means there has to be a good amount of trust between the pair.

So if he is to turn his back on them then that means there should be a really good reason. That is just what I think in my head I just can't see that working out in any way. But I am waiting for the next episode recaps so that I can give more about my thoughts in terms of having watched the other two episodes. My mind did think of him different after those two episodes which I am thankful for.

I dislike the newly half hour = one episode stuff too....it's worse when some dramas still stick to their old format and some have embraced this new format...so inconsistent and confusing for kdrama-viewers....

I feel the same! I started watching episode 12 and thought, wow the editing is very bad, how did we get here, are we going to have a flashback to explain the current situation (since some of the 1/2 hour episodes don't pick up where the last ended)?? Then I realized, wait, I'm on episode 11, not 12! So used to have the second episode of the week be an even number, I have to remember that with the 1/2 hour episodes it's always an odd number... yes, very confusing...maybe it will just take time to get used to it.

But I feel that having 2 1/2 hour episodes instead of 1 full hour is affecting the editing. At first I thought they would just cut the hour in 1/2 but it is really still a 1 hour episode, but no, each episode is really a 1/2 hour and are stand alones, they may not pick up where we left off 1 minute ago! So it feels off watching them back to back...oh well.

It would be a lame if suddenly one day Do han turns into a good character. Hello~~~ He should stick to a big ego maniac who lure other people to do the sweaty things for him. Then, I can applaud Kim Young-Kwang for this role. (Prove to me, Dude!)

I wish all team members together stab Do Han at the back, hit him into the rock with Soo Ji's Leadership (well, she born to be a fighter and has hunting instinct) then everyone can come clean and finally all of them can fight the bad guys together.

To be honest I wouldn't be that mad with an ending like that. But only and only if they managed to succeed with Do Han's initial goal. Cause seriously this dude has done all sorts of nasty just so that he can achieve his goal. Kinda seems sad if he can't even get his end goal achieved

I really believe that they can bring down Yoon Seung-Ro but not with current condition. Do Han is lacking in leadership, he's using the Priest to be his messenger. He used team members anger & sorrows to achieve his goal.

Confucius — 'Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.'

But it seems to me Do Han wish to build the cemetery..

He do not have the right leadership mentality and also the rapport with the team....

To be honest, Su Ji would be a much better leader, we could see how much rapport etc she already built with Bo Mi and KS just only one year with them....how can you build rapport and the team's trust in you when you are mysterious like the night, cold and being a faceless person...If I'm Su Ji, I will question about this so-called leader long before that 1 year being with the team....

1

I think it was @CrimeFighter that mentioned this but the idea of Su Ji overthrowing Do Han and becoming the leader sounds like such an appealing plot

2

SJ is really turning the tables on the leader of the group, trying to actively find out his identity and refusing to take his commands at face value unless she knows he is someone she can trust. I can't wait for SJ to find out DH's real identity and see how she deals with that.

That was a close call for everyone. Seems like Do-Han didnt expect Su-Ji to be this rebelious. With Kyung-Soo and Bo-Mi being so obedient, never question anything for years, Su-Ji is so out-of-control.

True, I think he might have regretted recruiting her into his team...hahaah

But since Do Han is the male lead and Soo Ji is the female lead, with a stereotype of K-Drama the writer will push Do Han to 'fall in love' with Soo Ji soon.. LOL

There might not be any romance or maybe just a little vague one since this is a crime thriller ?

I am the only one who thinks that Shi-Wan has something against cops. I mean for example, he was glaring at Suji when she was talking about being cop and putting criminals away. Also when he found out that his classmate's Mom is a cop, the look he game give me 'goosebumps' I don't know, he seemed extra interested.

Suji's greatest asset and weakness is her bull headedness. I still have a hard time liking her. I still don't think she's completely right. She goes crazy and ignores everything and everyone else around her when she has a personal stake in something. She breaks the law and makes herself obvious and threatens the other team members and assaults police officers. I don't think she's any better than Do-han. He's much more interesting to watch as he is more complex. I hope the show doesn't just whitewash what she did in the end. I don't agree with her that she committed a crime but has nothing to be ashamed of. How can showing up at a school and threatening a kid with a gun make you a hero? (even if he is a scumbag) It doesn't make her much different than him.

Thanks for the recap, TeriYaki! I've been lurking while appreciating how the plot is unfolding.

Officer Ma Jin-Ki looks mighty suspicious to me. He might be a mole for Chief Prosecutor Yoon. On the other hand, the show has been so good at misdirection, I'm not willing to bet the ranch on that assumption just yet. For all I know, he could be in cahoots with Prosecutor Jang.

I'm also wondering how Prosecutor Park suddenly came to be called back from a year of exile in the boondocks to head up the Jo Suji task force. On the face of it, he sounds like he's on the up and up. But is he really? He could be another of Chief Prosecutor Yoon's stooges -- who was sent to the minor leagues for a season to allay suspicion. If Park is actually one of Yoon's lackeys, he would be the mirror image of Jang Do-han: a crooked prosecutor who looks upright and honorable. Hmmm. If so, has he fooled straight-arrow Prosecutor Kim?

I admit it -- LOOKOUT is making me suspicious of just about everyone. ;-)

Shi-wan is indeed a creepy little so-and-so, and his Mom surely appears to be aware of it, as evidenced by her hiring a bodyguard to chauffeur him around. I, too, got the impression that it was to provide adult supervision to prevent the lad from harming others, and not the other way around. As for his apparent unhealthy interest in the offspring of police officers, I don't know what to make of it. I have a feeling that he may actually have an agenda of his own against his father, and is pursuing it in a covert, passive-aggressive manner.

I can't believe that Chief Prosecutor Yoon is at the top of the food chain. Who is his master?

The scenes in and around the church were suspenseful. I was wondering how Suji failed to recognize Prosecutor Jang's voice, or see that the “priest” in the confessional was not wearing a Roman collar. This has to be the latest twist on walking past someone and not seeing them. ;-)

As for Father Lee, he seems to be an artist. It is hard to make out his drawing, but it appears to be a butterfly, or possibly a close-up of a flower, a la Georgia O'Keeffe. Maybe a design for a stained-glass window?

When Suji later challenges him about their earlier meeting at the hospital and his role in the Lookouts' narrow escape from the police dragnet, he looks so busted. What a great expression! Shin Dong-wook elegantly conveys ineffective denial, in contrast to his brother, who is an accomplished con artist -- except for when he lets the mask slip.

LOOKOUT has me on tenterhooks. In a good way. ;-)
