Lookout: Episodes 23-24

It seems like the adage “one step forward, two steps back” is an apt description for Team Lookout’s progress. As our family of misfits grows closer and bonds over their shared tragedies, their enemies weave an even more intricate web made to ensnare them. And since evil runs in the family, Suji is once again faced with the psychopath who killed her daughter — but the only question is, can she prevent the same thing from happening to someone else, or will history repeat itself?

 
EPISODE 23 RECAP

Rewinding to earlier in the day, we see Detective Nam make his way into a wooded area. Suji and Kyung-soo pull up soon after, and Kyung-soo has a tracker on the detective, indicating that he’s not far away. Hoping that his mother might be nearby, Kyung-soo tears out of the car before Suji can stop him.

Detective Nam treks through the woods, coming to a stop at a tree marked with a small white X. Unfortunately, by the time Kyung-soo bounds through the woods after him, Bomi alerts the team that Nam has left. Kyung-soo’s face falls when Bomi adds, “I think he found what he wanted.” Sure enough, as Nam drives away, we see a dirt-covered bag in the backseat.

As night falls, Detective Nam arrives at a river. He loads a giant cinder block into the bag then starts to slowly drag it to the water’s edge. Meanwhile, the Lookout squad has tracked Nam’s location, but Bomi can’t find the van in the dark so Suji and Kyung-soo run through the night, frantically searching.

Just before Nam can dump the bag into the river, he answers (and records) a call from Chief Prosecutor Yoon, catching us up to where we left off in the last episode, with Nam yelling that he tortured and killed people on Yoon’s orders, and Yoon reminding him that he was well rewarded for it. When Nam discloses that Do-han warned him about what Yoon did to Lawyer Oh, Yoon glances up in shock at Do-han, who smirks back at him.

Detective Nam swears that he’s going to look out for himself now, when suddenly, Suji grabs him from behind. The two grapple and Suji knocks Nam onto the bag, sending it into the river. Forced with a quick decision, Suji lets the bag go and tackles Nam. Thankfully, Kyung-soo runs up and drags the bag out before it sinks below the water.

As Kyung-soo pulls the bag back on land, he sees a piece of fabric sticking out. He recognizes it at the scarf he gave his mother, and thinks back to when he’d turned his back on her. Finally accepting that his mother is truly gone, Kyung-soo breaks down.

After handcuffing one gagged Detective Nam inside the police van, Suji calls Soon-ae. She apologizes for the car chase last time they met, but Soon-ae isn’t holding a grudge (aw, besties). Suji says that she’s caught the person behind the missing housewife case (Kyung-soo’s mother) while he was trying to dispose of the body, then reveals that the culprit is none other than their coworker, Detective Nam.

While Soon-ae stutters at the news, Suji asks her friend to please prove that Nam also tried to murder her, hinting that Chief Prosecutor Yoon is the behind the detective. Suji hangs up and looks down sadly at Kyung-soo as he cries over what’s left of his mother.

Back in the prosecutor’s office, Yoon accuses Do-han of pushing Detective Nam into action. Do-han watches smugly as Yoon puts the pieces together, deducing that the younger prosecutor set him up. He points out that a mere phone call record isn’t enough to implicate him, but at Do-han’s continued silence, Yoon realizes that he must have recorded the conversation.

Do-han breaks into a grin and says, “You realized it too late.” Nearly cooing with triumph, he softly tells Yoon that the police are currently on their way to arrest Nam, and that they’ll find a record of his and Yoon’s conversation in the detective’s phone. Do-han muses that Yoon can probably destroy the evidence, but once the media finds out that a police detective committed murder, even the great Chief Prosecutor Yoon won’t be able to bury it without raising suspicion.

Taking a breath, Yoon guesses, “It was you. You hid your identity and approached me with a plan.” Do-han suddenly breaks into this silent, crazed laughter. With a mirthless grin and maniacal chuckle, Do-han stares intensely at his mortal enemy and whispers the words he’s been holding back for so long: “Yes. I am Lee Shin-hyuk’s son.”

Yoon stares, and Do-han’s borderline psychotic expression fades back to normal. Well, I’m a bit creeped out.

Soon-ae and the calvary arrive at the river to find the restrained Detective Nam. Jin-ki locates Nam’s bag next to the van and opens it to find… oh man, that’s a skeleton, isn’t it?

Not far off, Suji and Kyung-soo watch the police arrest Detective Nam. Kyung-soo wonders if this means his mother can finally be at peace, and Suji tells him that she’s sure his mother would be grateful that her son never gave up.

Detective Nam is brought in for interrogation, but it’s not going so well. When Soon-ae admonishes him to show some dignity as a detective and cooperate, Nam just tells her to focus on finding Suji.

Getting right up in his face, Soon-ae whipsers, “Why? Are you that sad you couldn’t kill her the last time?” Nam’s gaze flickers at that, and Soon-ae warns that she won’t let things go this time around. Oh, damn. Soon-ae be badass.

Soon-ae joins Do-han as he watches the interrogation. She’s frustrated at the detective’s silence, but Do-han suggests that Nam is keeping quiet in the hopes that whoever is backing him will help. Soon-ae asks if Do-han has any idea who that is, but Do-han just hints that there should be call records between Nam and whoever he worked with.

Yoon stares out his window and thinks back to Do-han’s threat that Nam’s phone (and recorded conversations) will soon be found. Coming to a decision, Yoon calls someone he greets as “Supreme Court Justice” and asks for help, saying that Lee Shin-hyuk’s case “might become an issue again.”

At Lookout HQ, Kyung-soo hesitates over a phone when Bomi comes up to him. Still angry at her, Kyung-soo brushes her off, but Bomi guesses that he hasn’t been able to tell his father and brother about his mother yet. Kyung-soo brushes it off, saying that the police will tell them soon, and that he hasn’t been close with his family since he ran away from home.

Bomi insists, “But you still can meet your family if you try to.” Kyung-soo looks up at that, and Bomi adds that his mother finally came home after ten years: “Are you going to let her see how her family has scattered away?” She reaches out to grip his shoulder encouragingly, then leaves. Picking up his phone, Kyung-soo finally calls his father and tells him, “I found Mom.”

At his home, Yoon greets the mysterious supreme court justice and tells him that the body of a witness to Lee Shin-hyuk’s trial has been found, adding that if this murder is investigated, people will learn that Shin-hyuk’s spy case was a lie.

The man looks distinctly worried at this news, and Yoon warns him, “Then people will find out you were wrong when you declared Lee Shin-hyuk a spy as the supreme court justice who oversaw the case.” Oooh, so he’s the judge from Do-han’s father’s case.

After revealing his identity to Yoon, Do-han is finally able to visit his father in the hospital. The priest is worried about Yoon knowing the truth, but Do-han promises that the chief prosecutor can’t retaliate without his past cases coming to light.

The priest asks if Do-han has all the witnesses. Do-han tells him he does, and all he has to do now is arrest Chief Prosecutor Yoon. Do-han thanks his brother for helping, and the priest leaves to give him some privacy. Do-han stands above his father’s bed looks down on his sleeping father, then reaches out to hold his hand, smiling slightly.

Meanwhile, the supreme court justice sighs to Yoon that the sentencing on Lee Shin-hyuk’s case was a mistake, but Yoon points out that he still didn’t hesitate to cover it up. Yoon asks if he is ready for not only the whole world, but also his son to find out the truth. Apparently, the supreme court justice is not, as he asks Yoon what he needs. “Defend me,” Yoon answers.

Do-han trudges his way home when Suji texts to ask what happened with Detective Nam. Do-han immediately calls her to say that things are going according to plan and the police will check the phone soon. Suji asks about his father, and Do-han smiles as he admits that he just visited him.

Suji says that Yoon may still have other people working for him, but Do-han isn’t worried, adding, “Now I can go back to being my dad’s son.” He promises that he’ll catch Yoon and find out the truth behind what really happened to Yoo-na: “After that, I’ll make up for what I did to you two and accept legal punishment.” With a final assurance that it won’t be long now, Do-han hangs up.

The next day, Eun-joong is interviewed by Prosecutor Park, who chastises him for doing something so foolish as passing on information to a fugitive. Eun-joong answers, “I don’t want to hear that from you.” Touché.

Prosecutor Park argues that Eun-joong should at least care about how his father will feel about this, but Eun-joong isn’t worried since he didn’t tell his dad. Except, it seems that Park has already informed this mysterious father figure.

Then who should walk in, but the supreme court justice (even though he’s since retired, we’ll call him Justice Kim, because everyone else still is) who has been meeting with Yoon. Eun-joong greets him as his father, and Justice Kim tells his son that he’s here to be his lawyer.

At the precinct, Do-han, Soon-ae, and Jin-ki discuss Detective Nam’s phone. They found the call record between Nam and Chief Prosecutor Yoon, but that doesn’t prove much. Do-han subtly hints that they should check the phone for emails, messages… recorded conversations, perhaps.

Soon-ae says they were able to find a huge file of recorded messages, but they’re password protected. Jin-ki chimes in to add that with its sixteen digit code, the password could take the cyber team over a year to break. Do-han’s expression just about says it all.

Justice Kim meets with Detective Nam, introducing himself as his lawyer. Nam asks if “he” sent him, and Justice Kim cryptically answers, “If you want help, show the appropriate attitude.” Message delivered, he leaves Nam alone to consider.

Kyung-soo is getting ready for his mother’s funeral. Suji joins him, helping him with his tie and apologizing that she and Bomi can’t go with him. Kyung-soo reassures her that it’s enough that she helped him find his mom.

Detective Nam gets yet another visitor, and this time, it’s Do-han. Getting right to the point, Do-han advises Nam that he can’t trust Yoon to help him, since Yoon will never trust him. “Whatever offer he makes, don’t fall for it. He’s leading you to your death,” Do-han says.

Nam asks what Do-han would suggest, then. Do-han immediately tells him to reveal the truth to both the police and the media, which will make it harder for Yoon to get to him.

Detective Nam seems to consider it, but then we cut over to Yoon’s office, where we see Justice Kim hand him a slip of paper, saying it’s the password to Nam’s phone. (Crap.) Justice Kim relates that Nam agreed to their deal, asking what Yoon wants to do with him.

Yoon reveals that Nam has been accepting bribes from club owners and putting the money in his wife’s name. The chief prosecutor remarks that Nam’s wife should be punished too. Yoon instructs Justice Kim, “Tell detective Nam that his child is still young. He’ll know what to do to avoid turning his wife into a criminal.”

Do-han attends the memorial for Kyung-soo’s mother, where Kyung-soo stands with his father and brother. Our poor hacker’s eyes nearly pop out of his head to see his boss there, but Do-han merely bows respectfully and leaves.

Kyung-soo catches up with him and immediately dips his head in contrition, saying that he wants to apologize to Do-han on behalf of his mother. Do-han smiles at that and tells Kyung-soo that he doesn’t have to: “Your mother did apologize. She tried to make things right. That’s all I need.”

Do-han adds that he should be the one apologizing, since he should have told Kyung-soo’s family about his mother earlier. Kyung-soo doesn’t seem to hold a grudge, telling Do-han it was enough that he helped him catch his mother’s killer.

At Lookout HQ, Suji glances as the feed from Shi-wan’s hacked phone and stops cold when she sees Se-won (Soon-ae’s daughter) bounding up to Shi-wan. Shi-wan hastily covers his phone, but Suji already saw what she needed to.

Suji drives over to the school just in time to see Shi-wan leaving. Right before he gets in the car, Se-won calls out to him, and he turns to wave at her, smiling. There’s a creepy moment when he looks back at his driver with a blank face, but then he turns back to Se-won, all smiles again.

Suji watches the exchange from afar as her daughter’s killer and her best friend’s daughter wave cheerily at one another.

 
EPISODE 24 RECAP

Worried about her friend’s daughter, Suji risks meeting Se-won at the school. Suji starts to ask if Se-won is close with Shi-wan, but Se-won cuts her off, already guessing what she will say. Se-won admits that she knows both Suji and her mother believe that Shi-wan killed Yoo-na, but the girl passionately argues that there isn’t any proof, adding that Shi-wan is the only person who really understands her.

Suji doesn’t hesitate to reveal that Shi-wan had laughed after Yoo-na died, and that he’d unashamedly told her that everyone else believed his act. Gently, Suji tells Se-won that Shi-wan is not capable of empathy and is just pretending with her. Se-won does seem doubtful for a moment, but then she stubbornly insists that it can’t be true.

After failing to talk Se-won out of staying away from Shi-wan, Suji returns to Lookout HQ and has Bomi search through the previous CCTV footage of Shi-wan at school. Sure enough, they notice him looking directly at the cameras, and Suji realizes that he knows they’re watching him. Now, she worries that Shi-wan reached out to Se-won on purpose.

Justice Kim succeeds in getting Eun-joong released, and they seem quite friendly, though Justice Kim does ask his son if it was worth losing his job. Eun-joong replies that while he used the wrong method, he did what he believed was right – just how his father has lived his life.

Justice Kim bids his son goodbye as he has another “case” to go work on, and Eun-joong eagerly asks if it’s pertaining to his father’s human rights interests. Given Justice Kim’s suddenly shifty looks, I’m guessing it’s not.

Over at the Yoon house, Suji successfully cons her way in by posing as a delivery person with a box for Shi-wan. The housekeeper leads her up to his room, and Suji uses an excuse to give her a few moments of privacy.

Unfortunately, the housekeeper is too good at her job and calls Shi-wan’s mother to confirm if she was expecting a package. Clearly, Mom wasn’t, and she rushes out of the mall she was in.

At the station, Justice Kim visits his client, Detective Nam. Nam is eager to know if Yoon accepted his offer (leniency for his phone password) and wants to reassure his family that he’s all right. Justice Kim ominously asks if Nam has heard from his family in the last few days, then discloses that Nam’s wife is being interrogated for suspicion of bribery.

Detective Nam is stunned, realizing that this is Yoon’s doing. He starts to desperately babble about how he did everything Yoon told him to and wonders what he did wrong, but Justice Kim advises him to think of his family instead.

Suji hurriedly ransacks Shi-wan’s room and finds a portfolio of sketches. Inside is a picture of herself with Yoo-na from the day she picked her daughter up. Immediately below that is a drawing of Yoo-na from Shi-wan’s point of view as he threw her off the roof, complete with his hand pushing her. Suji stares at the picture depicting her daughter’s murder, horrified.

At the precinct, Do-han heads in to visit Detective Nam, but stops when he spies Justice Kim coming from the visiting room. When Do-han calls him, Eun-joong tells him that his father is there working on a case.

Back in Shi-wan’s room, Bomi’s voice snaps Suji out of her shock when Shi-wan’s mom arrives outside. Suji quickly shoves everything back into its place, but pauses to take a picture of the drawing of Yoo-na.

Mom comes bursting into the empty room and instructs the housekeeper to call the police. She starts looking around and spies the portfolio casually leaning against a wall. She opens it and finds the picture her son drew of Yoo-na’s death right on top. She gapes at the picture in horror… but doesn’t really look surprised. Mom immediately zips up the portfolio, and just then, she catches sight of Suji hiding in the corner, watching her.

Suji strides out and grabs Mom from behind, covering her mouth and angrily whispering in her ear, “You weren’t surprised to see the drawings. You knew exactly what your son was like. You covered for him, even knowing what he’s like.” She whips Mom around to face her and warns that Shi-wan will do something terrible again, asking if Mom will continue to pretend that she knows nothing.

Mom shoves Suji away and gets a rather psychotic gleam of her own, yelling that no matter what Suji says, Shi-wan is still her only son, and she’d kill Suji if anything happened to him. Bomi chimes in to warn Suji of an approaching police car, and our vigilante beats a hasty exit.

A bustle of sudden activity at the police station has Do-han following a group of paramedics toward the jail cells, and he gapes to see them carting out the body of Detective Nam. As Do-han stares, we hear a breaking news report that the detective hung himself.

Yoon is watching the news when his wife calls him about Suji’s break-in. He returns home, where Shi-wan and his mother stand amongst a slew of men who are combing for planted recording devices. Mom flashes back to Suji’s warning that her son will try “do something” again soon.

One of the men gets too close to a a giant blank canvas, and Shi-wan snaps at him to leave it alone. Mom asks when Shi-wan is going to fill the picture with something, and Shi-wan creepily gazes at the blank space, saying that he’ll fill it soon.

Soon-ae calls Eun-joong at his home to report that Detective Nam died, leaving behind only a note apologizing to his family. Eun-joong can’t believe that he’d suddenly kill himself. When Soon-ae tells him that the last person Nam spoke to was his lawyer, Justice Kim, Eun-joong’s face falls.

Eun-joong hesitantly joins his father on the couch and asks if Detective Nam was his client. Justice Kim goes still, and Eun-joong asks how he knew the detective. His father merely replies that an acquaintance asked for his help, then abruptly heads to bed, leaving Eun-joong looking lost.

Yoon meets with Lawyer Oh and tries to mend their burned bridge. He reveals that they were both fooled by Do-han, but Oh seems more focused on Yoon betraying him simply because of a rumor. Yoon insists that Do-han has a grudge against him, but Oh just notes that this must be Do-han exacting his revenge.

Lawyer Oh flashes back to a recent dinner he’d had with Do-han, when his former protégé had warned him that Yoon would soon come seeking amends. Do-han had counseled him against it, pointing out that Yoon’s most loyal henchman, Detective Nam, died after trying to negotiate with Yoon.

Returning to the present, Lawyer Oh tells Yoon that an apology isn’t enough, so Yoon asks how he can make up for it. We don’t hear Oh’s answer.

Do-han calls Suji that night to tell her about Detective Nam, and she shares tells him about the drawing she found in Shi-wan’s room. Suji sighs that just the picture won’t be enough, but Do-han encourages her to keep collecting evidence so the truth can be revealed.

They’re both silent for a moment until Do-han reminds her that the hearing is tomorrow. He tells Suji that she should watch it live, saying that there is something she needs to know. When Suji asks what it is, Do-han heavily answers that she’ll find out tomorrow.

Kyung-soo hauls himself back to the Lookout HQ, completely exhausted from his mother’s memorial. Half asleep, he stumbles over to his darkened bed and flops down. Barely five seconds later, there’s a cacophony of girlish squeals from both Kyung-soo and Bomi as they each leap up, Bomi lunging for the light while Kyung-soo hyperventilates.

Bomi glares daggers at Kyung-soo, who she says knew very well that she would be sleeping there. In turn, Kyung-soo calms down enough to explain that he hasn’t slept in days and wasn’t thinking straight. Bomi warms slightly at that, chiding at him for not taking any naps. She asks if he sent his mom off well, and Kyung-soo answers that he hopes she’s finally found peace.

An awkward silence ensues and then they each try to offer the bed to the other. Kyung-soo insists that she stay in the bed and starts to walk off, but Bomi reaches out and grabs his hand. She tells him that he needs a good rest after everything, and Kyung-soo gazes back down at her, smiling slightly.

Night passes into day, and Suji heads over to Bomi’s bed to ask if she’s seen Kyung-soo, then stops and stares, gobsmacked, at both Kyung-soo and Bomi sleeping (fully clothed) next to each other. Heh, Suji totally starts to smile, then puts on a disapproving parent glare and yells at the two of them to wake up.

The two young adults wake up, groggily smiling and completely unfazed by Suji’s glowering. Suji reminds the two that they previously couldn’t stand one another, and Bomi agrees. “He is an idiot. But he’s sweet,” Bomi says.

And heh, Kyung-soo actually nods along, all Yup, whatever she says. He then gives his two cents that Bomi can be rather nasty, “But she’s pretty, so it’s fine.”

Suji just shakes her head at both of them and wanders off, leaving the two to giggle adorably at one another. Kyung-soo then leans in close to Bomi and asks her to come with him somewhere later.

That “somewhere” turns out to be a realtor’s office, and Kyung-soo asks her opinion on a three bedroom house he’s looking to rent. Bomi asks a bunch of savvy questions to the realtor, prompting the woman to compliment Kyung-soo on his girlfriend. (Aww!) The two give each other the cutest look, and Kyung-soo signs the paper to rent the place.

Once they’re out of the office, Bomi coyly tells Kyung-soo that she’s not planning to get married until she’s thirty. Kyung-soo is confused for a moment, then clarifies that the house is for himself and his father and brother. At Bomi’s embarrassed face, he leans in close to ask if she thought the house was for the two of them.

Bomi calls him crazy and stomps off, but Kyung-soo just grins and calls out that he’ll get her something better. The two then head to an toy crane game, and Kyung-soo shows off some mad toy wrangling skills, winning stuffed toy after stuffed toy while Bomi cheers. By the time they leave, she’s holding so many that you can’t even see her face.

Suji’s words of warning seem to have made at least some impact with Se-won, as the girl hesitantly confronts Shi-wan to ask if he really didn’t kill Yoo-na. Immediately able to tell that Suji talked to Se-won, he tells Se-won that they should keep their friendship a secret from the adults, since they wouldn’t understand.

Se-won agrees, but she does note that Shi-wan never answered her question. She asks him point-blank, “Did you kill Yoo-na?” Shi-wan hesitates a moment before he smiles and replies, “No.” To her credit, Se-won doesn’t look like she entirely believes him. Then, when Soon-ae calls later, Se-won promises that she’s going to listen to her mom and Suji and stay away from Shi-wan.

However, as soon as she hangs up, Shi-wan runs up to her. She smiles, and the two of them leave together. Suji watches the two exit the school entrance, and as Se-won chatters happily next to him, we hear Shi-wan think, “Are you watching? Watch all you want. You can’t stop anything, just like you couldn’t last time.” (*Shiver*)

It’s finally time for the attorney general hearing, and Yoon arrives at the courthouse amongst a throng of reporters asking questions about his involvement in Yoo-na’s case and Bomi’s parent’s murders. Yoon smiles slightly and smoothly responds that he will answer their questions as best as he can during the hearing.

Meanwhile, Do-han tells someone over the phone that he was only able to provide two of the three witnesses he promised. But his call is suddenly interrupted when two detectives march into his office with a warrant to arrest him on charges of forgery.

The detectives move forward to handcuff him, and Do-han starts laughing at this new twist. But when the laughter fades, Do-han looks worried.

 
COMMENTS

Wow. Do-han just cannot catch a break. To be fair, his assumption of victory throughout the episode was giving me a bad vibe, especially since Yoon is someone you really should never turn your back on. I admit I was surprised at how soon Do-han showed his hand after Detective Nam’s capture, and I fear that it’s about to come back around to bite him. I’m not disappointed though, because it really would have been too easy if this all-important hearing was really the end of things, especially when the villain is someone as crafty at the chief prosecutor. It makes complete sense that he would have other people he could twist to this side, and who better than the judge who presided over Do-han’s father’s trial?

It seems a little too much of a coincidence that Justice Kim just happened to also be Eun-joong father, so I’m wondering if maybe Do-han factored this into his plans after all, but I’ve come to realize that any time I speculate about the direction this show will go, it manages to still surprise me. Case in point: Eun-joong. I’m so relieved that he didn’t go to the dark side, since I am loving the reluctant camaraderie between him and Do-han. This new twist does mean that he’s going to be facing some hard questions now that his father has sided with the Master Of All Evil. That’s going to hurt so much when the truth comes out, and Eun-joong will really have to test his belief that the law means treating everyone the same, whether they’re your enemy or family.

Now that we’re heading into our final two weeks, I’m really ready to see the whole Yoon family go up in flames. I sympathized a bit with Shi-wan’s mom when I thought she was just guessing at her son’s true nature, but there’s no longer any doubt that she knows exactly what kind of monster she’s raising. Shi-wan especially needs to go, if for no other reason than to keep Soon-ae’s daughter from becoming another Yoo-na.

I am curious about how this is going to play out though, because given Shi-wan’s brilliant (but twisted) mind, he could conceivably succeed in throwing more wrenches in Do-han rapidly unraveling plans. Or, he could slip up, prove that he still is just a teenager, and get caught by Suji. At this point, he may be either the final nail in his father’s coffin, or the unforeseen wind the knocks down Do-han’s carefully crafted revenge scheme.

All the cloak and dagger business aside, I’m having the best time watching Kyung-soo and Bomi. In spite of the crazy revenge scheme happening around them, Bomi and Kyung-soo’s relationship has a very natural and honest feel to it that I think is in large part due to the actors. I really have to tip my hat off to Key, because while I expected Kim Seul-gi to be brilliant, I think he is just owning Kyung-soo completely. Even if everything else is going belly-up, as long as I can watch Kyung-soo win stuffed animals for Bomi, I’m good.
