Shinee’s Onew up to romance Han Seung-yeon in Age of Youth 2

Shinee’s Onew (Descended From the Sun) has been offered a role opposite Han Seung-yeon (Secret Love) in the second season of JTBC’s Age of Youth. This cohabitation drama was all about the trials and tribulations faced by the five very different college-age women who lived together in the share house Belle Epoque.

Part of the beauty of the drama was the diversity of its characters in terms of temperament, background, and life goals. Han Ye-ri (The Worst Day) played a character who was fiercely independent but also burdened by financial woes; Park Eun-bin (Father I’ll Take Care of You) was a boy-crazy single girl with a compulsive lying tic; Ryu Hwa-young (Father is Strange) played a sexy young woman who used men for money; Park Hye-soo (Introverted Boss) was a shy freshman; and Han Seung-yeon played a love-fool, who fell for every trick in the book when it came to her man’s deceptions.

Hopefully, she’ll have better luck with Onew this time around—his character is reported to be an engineering student who falls in love with her. No further details have been released, but he played such a sweetie in Descended From the Sun that I’m looking forward to seeing more of his tender-hearted personality shine through in his next role too. All the original main cast members have agreed to reprise their roles except for Ryu Hwa-young, who will probably still be busy with her current weekend drama, Father Is Strange. A new character whose nickname is “The Tall One” will replace her in the share house.

Age of Youth Season 2 will air on JTBC starting August, after the end of Woman of Dignity, which follows currently airing Man to Man in the Friday-Saturday time slot.

darn! han ye-ri was my favorite but ryu hwa-young had a really interesting storyline. she just started to turn her life around and i wanted to know how it would turn out. a second season was a bit unexpected when it was first announced but i don't mind it's return at all. one thing i also loved was also the soundtrack and i hope it will be amazing again.

Han Ye-ri was my favorite too.
Ryu's current drama will end in September. I hope her appearance is more than a cameo.

Me too! I'm actually kinda hoping that her "guest appearance" will be so good (let's say, she'll slay her role again and her storyline will be super interesting, leaving us wanting more) that the producers will change their minds about her short cameo, and just have her be a regular on the show.

Hwa-young's character was my favorite, then Eun-bin, then Ye-ri. The show's reasoning on Hwa-young not coming back as a regular cast member because her story arch ended is ridiculous. You can do so much more with her character because she's found a new purpose (and goals) in life, she's gradually changing and becoming a stronger and better person (for herself), and we've been through her journey and all her relationships that we've become attached to her and the people around her, but now we can't follow her on her life journey anymore. Or we'll just get like a montage, of some sorts, which, blah.

Nevertheless, I'm still super excited for Season 2 and you reminded me of the awesome OST, so now I'm excited for a whole new batch of ear worms!

yah, i recently read the reasons given about her not coming back and felt the same way as you. she has a new trajectory in life and you're trying to tell me there's no more to her story?? what?? i do hope that her cameos turn out more like jo in sung's guest starring in dear my friends--appearances in just about every episode so it actually doesn't feel like she's just a guest. :D

I was pleasantly surprised about his "ending" in the last ep and sighed and groaned all over again when she read his letter. I didn't feel bad for him, but I was like, "C'mon, girl! Don't fall for it, again!" Then I saw the follow-up scene and omg, that forever scumbag will never learn his lesson or truly realize what he did wrong (so many things) and I reeeeeeeaaaaaally hope she doesn't fall for it/him ever again.

I really hope so, but why do I have a feeling we'll see more of him? Hopefully in jail! Omg, I can totally imagine Seung-yeon's character visiting him in jail.

I know Ryu Hwa-young is controversial, but I will be sorry to lose her character. Now: Onew! <3 He played a sweetie in Descended from the Sun, because he IS a sweetie; I wasn't too sure about his performance, but I am dying to have a more complete picture of what he can and can't do. Onew playing the puppy in love isn't too far from his public persona, so he might be able to pull it off, and give everybody diabetes while he is at it :-)) . Anyway, as if I wasn't looking forward to the show enough; now August seems very far away...

I really hope he takes this role- he had such an emotional scene in DOTS which brought me to tears?

Excited for this. I'm a huge fan of his and love him to bits, but I'm majorly bummed out that Ryu Hwayoung's role has been reduced to a cameo. Whatever scandals she's been in, she's a talented, competent actress. She's managed to sell me on a mature, sultry image in Age of Youth and Ex-girlfriend's club, while she pulls off immature, young, slightly ditzy Maknae in Father is Strange. I think she would have been able to handle both dramas since she doesn't have a major role in Father is Strange and other characters actors have been able to do so in the past.

I like the new cast, but I hope the focus is still on the girls' stories and it remains a female centric drama.

I have nothing against the male actors selected for season 2 but I wish and pray that the main focus will be on our Belle Epoque girls because that is what made AoY close to my heart. Each girl had a different story but there was something in everyone's life that made me connect with them individually. The romance part was short, cute, realistic and just part of the story and I hope this time too they keep it like this and not focus on romance entirely.

Onew! I hope his character is good to Ye-eun. I don't see her going into a new relationship so soon after her trauma, so I'm thinking there will be a time skip into this season, especially with the new roommate.

I'm still really curious about who the new roommate will be. I hope her casting announcement is next!

First comment: Kyyyyaaaaaa~!!
Second comment: WHERE ARE HIS HANDS?!?

Onew was my bias when I was a SHINee fangirl, so I'll always have a special place in my heart for this boy. He's a cutie and I can totally imagine him as the studious engineer student that has a puppy dog crush on Han Seung-yeon. I also think that with where we left off for Seung-yeon's character, that things could get more serious and emotional for her/about her story arch. I have faith that Onew will be that knight in shining armor that will help mend her heart and soul, in addition to the help of the other roomies, of course. I just hope he doesn't turn crazy, because, um, we just don't need another crazy. I'm already imagining the cuteness that is Onew. I wonder if they'll have him wear glasses...

I must have taken over from you with the fangirling :-) . I certainly hope he will not go down the criminal jerk boyfriend route, but I'll have faith that SM will want to preserve his squeaky clean image :-p .

Aw, haha, well, I'm glad to have passed the baton to you, then! Are you loving and adoring him properly--with all his Dubu-ing ways? Hee.

And oh, you're right! They probably wouldn't wanna tarnish his good boy image and ruin the lives of millions of fangirls. I actually would like to see him take on that challenge, but for the sake of this show and Seung-yeon's character, I'd rather he not go there.

He kind of grated on my nerves in DotS with all the gratuitous extended crying scenes. But he's cute and there'll probably be way less crying in this drama, so. Anyway, I'm glad because this means evil dirtbag ex is likely gone for good.

Exactly; his role in DoTS felt a bit too manufactured to showcase him "acting", but the rest of the time he was mostly alone, or doing inconsequential group scenes. There was little authenticity, and I had the feeling that he had had very little contact with the rest of the cast. I hope Age of Youth will give him a more organic character, and that he will do well with it...

I never had the chance to sneak Age of Youth into my drama watching schedule, but I think I'll try my hard to do it this time. I always tell myself that I should never do stuffs for the sake of a guy even if they are an eyecandy korean actor, but this is Jinki. Jinki is an exception. I'll even do illegal stuffs for Jinki.

Onew? I kept laughing when he was doing those crying scenes in DOTS, it was overly dramatic. As long as he doesn't take all the screen time from the other co-stars.
