Man to Man: Episode 8

Things get pretty interesting as Seol-woo attempts to get back into the swing of things as Ghost Agent K, only to find that he’s facing more roadblocks than ever before. Though our villains are doing their part to keep the NIS from moving forward with its mission, I love that it’s actually Chewing’s top star and his devoted manager that are tripping Seol-woo up the most—and I’m all for it.
EPISODE 8 RECAP
Seol-woo disappears quickly after Do-ha is rescued, leaving her to look around for him in confusion.
During dinner with his fellow conspirators, Seung-jae receives the news that Ki-chul failed his mission once again. Seung-jae takes his anger out on his messenger, hitting him hard, then as a way of explanation, he tells his companions that he’s looking for a world where the person spending the money will feel rewarded.
After Woon-kwang and Do-ha get treated for their injuries, Dong-hyun asks them to sign a confidentiality agreement on the events of the night. But Do-ha wants to talk to Seol-woo first, and Dong-hyun has no choice but to make it happen when Woon-kwang threatens to call the media.
Do-ha and Seol-woo meet at his place, and though Seol-woo keeps his tone distant, he looks pained to see the scrapes on Do-ha’s wrists. Seol-woo apologizes for what he’s put her through, but she asks him to instead tell her the truth. Hesitantly, she asks, “Are you really a secret agent with the NIS?”
Not mincing his words, Seol-woo confirms that he is indeed an agent. He says he was disguised as a bodyguard for a mission, but now that the mission’s been aborted, he’s planning on leaving. Looking up at him incredulously, Do-ha asks if the moments he spent with her were lies and disguises too. He tells her that to someone like him—someone who has to lie often, and whose days are filled with death and violence—Do-ha is the most dangerous person. That’s not an answer!
As Do-ha tries to process his words, Seol-woo pushes the confidentiality agreement towards her, asking her to sign. She signs the agreement, but tells Seol-woo that it’s been a difficult day, and that they should talk again tomorrow with clearer heads. Seol-woo doesn’t say anything, but he looks conflicted as he watches Do-ha leave.
Do-ha tells Woon-kwang on their way home that she plans to talk with Seol-woo again the next day. Woon-kwang looks worried for Do-ha and thinks back to earlier that night, when Seol-woo told him that he’d disappear from Do-ha’s life after all of this was over. Woon-kwang had thanked Seol-woo and told him to keep his promise.
Dong-hyun berates Seol-woo for his recent actions, blaming him for not only getting his cover blown but for also getting Department Head Jang into trouble. Seol-woo’s pretty cavalier about it, pointing out that his assignment as Woon-kwang’s bodyguard is over, and that they’ve gotten everything else they wanted: the wood carving, the ring, Do-ha’s safety, and even the enemy’s ghost agent. Touché.
Giving Seol-woo a knowing look, Dong-hyun asks if everything’s okay with Do-ha. Seol-woo looks away and answers by saying that she signed the confidentiality agreement. Dong-hyun calls Seol-woo’s actions “uncharacteristic,” then returns to him his pen recorder, saying he deleted Seol-woo’s resignation message.
After a pause, Seol-woo says he’ll begin the Black Auction mission tomorrow. When Dong-hyun reminds him that the mission is worth five million dollars, Seol-woo says that the “first floor” was exposed and asks Dong-hyun to take care of it.
When Do-ha returns home, she’s greeted by a worried Myung-suk, who wonders if there’s something going on with her and Seol-woo. Instead of answering him, Do-ha tells her father to forget about the Black Auction ring, since it’s now with the prosecutor’s office. When Myung-suk freaks out about how much the ring is worth, Do-ha loses her temper and yells that the ring wasn’t even his to begin with. She asks him if he knows how dangerous the ring is, and begs him to stop.
Both Seol-woo and Do-ha stay up late that night thinking back on their times together—Seol-woo plays with his lucky coin, while Do-ha’s in bed. As Seol-woo replays his last words to Do-ha in his mind, telling her that he’s leaving, he does a final magic trick, making the coin disappear in his hands.
The next morning, Seol-woo gets ready for his first day on his new mission, slipping the Black Auction ring onto his finger. He glances at his CCTV feed, but pauses in front of it when he sees Do-ha cautiously approaching his door.
Outside, Do-ha takes a deep breath and moves to ring the bell, but ends up coming inside on her own when she sees the door ajar. Shocked to see that everything’s been cleared out, she tries to call Seol-woo, pleading with him to answer the phone. As she realizes that she won’t be getting that follow-up conversation with Seol-woo after all, her eyes well up with tears, and out loud, she says, “Did you really leave like this? If you fooled me, you should apologize. If you saved me, you should let me thank you.”
Seol-woo watches Do-ha break down in tears through the screen, blinking away tears of his own. He turns away, unable to keep looking at her, then turns off the monitor. Oof, my heart.
After helping patch up Woon-kwang’s injuries, Sang-shik wonders where Guard Kim might be. Woon-kwang breaks the news that Seol-woo quit, and when he struggles to explain why, Sang-shik convinces the rest of the team that it must be because the two got into a fistfight (and Woon-kwang lost).
The Black Auction mission takes Seol-woo to the airport, where he strolls up to a pretty woman and envelops her in an embrace. When they pull apart, she tells him, “I’ve missed you, K.” He tells her that it’s been a while, and arm in arm, the two head off.
Dong-hyun informs Department Head Jang that the second wood carving mission has begun. Department Head Jang notes that Agent K hasn’t been himself lately, then says that Seol-woo needs to be particularly careful since the Baek Infantry is likely to make an appearance at the Black Auction. He asks Dong-hyun if they’ve been able to get any information from Ki-chul, but Dong-hyun says that he’s not saying a word.
Songsan has sent Ki-chul a lawyer, but it’s clear that he’s not there for Ki-chul’s benefit. The lawyer relays a message from Seung-jae to “take responsibility for [his] failure,” then tells him that if he wants to live, he should keep his mouth shut. Ki-chul remains silent, but he tightens his fists in anger.
When Seung-jae informs Assemblyman Baek of his decision to cut ties with Ki-chul, Assemblyman Baek encourages him to take it a step further, suggesting that the former ghost agent be “put in a pot and boiled.” Seung-jae says that he doesn’t want to take of care things quietly, then pushes the intercom button and asks to be connected to the “VIP.”
At Chewing, CEO Ji wonders if Guard Kim’s departure has anything to do with Songsan, citing rumors that Seung-jae has it out for them. Worried about finding investors for their upcoming movie, CEO Ji hesitantly suggests pursuing other projects. But Woon-kwang insists that they move forward with the movie as planned, even offering to fund the film himself—but only as a last resort.
Seol-woo’s mystery woman from the airport walks into a hotel with an older man on her arm. They easily bypass security, since we see that their names and faces are on a list for the Asia Investment Forum. At the front desk, the man places his hand on the counter, showing off his Black Auction ring. A hotel manager scans the ring, then hands him a special Black Auction box along with a key to their suite.
The couple enters the suite, where the older man starts to loosen his tie before slowly peeling off his entire face, revealing a sweaty Seol-woo underneath. He heads to the bathroom to take off the rest of his disguise, and he peeks into the Black Auction box, smiling in satisfaction.
Woon-kwang gently broaches the topic of Seol-woo with Do-ha, who can only angrily say that she’s going to kill Seol-woo. She gets teary again as she tells Woon-kwang that all Seol-woo had to do was apologize, but instead, he disappeared. She threatens to shoot him the next time she sees him before turning to Woon-kwang to ask him to buy her a gun, ha.
Back at the hotel, Seol-woo hands his accomplice a flash drive with some secret documents, noting that he’s held up his end of the deal. When he turns to leave, the woman wraps her arms around his waist, reminding him that the real chairman is arriving tomorrow, and she’s got nothing on her schedule today. Ever the cold-hearted spy, Seol-woo pushes her hands away and tells her that if she wanted romance, she should have included it in the terms of their deal.
Do-ha and Woon-kwang unwind with a movie, during which Do-ha muses that the lead actor and actress must have been in love while they were filming their romantic scenes together. Scoffing, Woon-kwang tells her it’s just acting, then tries to prove it to her by looking deep into her eyes and saying that he loves her. At those words, Do-ha thinks of Seol-woo again, but she shakes it off and applauds Woon-kwang’s amazing acting skills.
At Seol-woo’s place, Dong-hyun marvels at the Black Auction box, which turns out to be the official invitation to the auction, complete with top secret instructions on paying the $5 million participation fee. Dong-hyun says that Department Head Jang is working hard to gather special activities funding to pay that fee and tells Seol-woo to do well.
On “duty” at Song-yi’s restaurant, Myung-suk tries calling Seol-woo while watching the local news report on Assemblyman Baek’s mayoral campaign. Convinced that his day job at the restaurant is the source of Seol-woo and Do-ha’s relationship trouble, he comes up with a new plan to get back on Seol-woo’s good side: He’ll align himself with the right mayoral candidate.
Cut to: Myung-suk, clad in full campaign gear in support of Assemblyman Baek, intercepting the candidate on the street. Myung-suk tells the assemblyman that they’d met when he was working with “Mr. Yoon,” then he hands the Assemblyman a business card that notes Myung-suk as the CEO of Gallery Yoon.
When the Assemblyman’s eyes widen at the reference to Agent Yoon, Myung-suk quietly introduces himself as Goldfinger and offers himself to Assemblyman Baek for whatever he might need. Assemblyman Baek stuffs Myung-suk’s card in his pocket and says that he’ll be in touch.
Elsewhere, Mi-eun tells Department Head Jang that she’s putting an end to their deal. Department Head Jang says the mission’s still ongoing, but Mi-eun retorts that the NIS can’t protect her or her son and adds that she’ll take her husband’s side if the NIS messes with Songsan again. She tells Department Head Jang to bury her secret, telling him that she’ll do the same for the deals they’ve made thus far.
Mi-eun heads to Sharon’s boutique next, where she tells Sharon that she’s cutting ties to both Eun-soo (the actress) and Department Head Jang. She attempts to make a quick exit when Woon-kwang arrives, but he stops her to ask why Seung-jae is scaring off potential investors for his movie. Mi-eun coldly tells Woon-kwang not to use her husband as an excuse for his movie doing poorly with investors.
Dong-hyun tells Seol-woo that Ki-chul’s been acting strange after the visit from his lawyer—he’s staring straight into the camera in the interrogation room, not saying a word, and has been tapping his fingers in some kind of pattern. As Seol-woo watches the footage of Ki-chul, he zooms into Ki-chul’s hands and starts scribbling down numbers. He tells Dong-hyun that Ki-chul’s using a ghost agent code, and he’s tapping out a GPS coordinate.
Back home, Woon-kwang recalls his conversation with Sharon, when he’d asked if Mi-eun was having problems with Seung-jae. He noted Mi-eun’s unhappiness and wondered if it could be because of him, but Sharon dismissed his concerns, saying that Mi-eun and Song-jae’s issues are between the two of them.
Aw, it seems that Woon-kwang’s in need of some brotherly company after his run-in with Mi-eun. He shows up outside of Seol-woo’s place with chicken and beer, waving the food around at the CCTV cameras and calling out Seol-woo’s name. When he gets no response, he threatens to call out the whole neighborhood, and hey, what do you know, the door buzzes open.
Inside, Woon-kwang is his usual adorable self, telling Seol-woo that he missed him and even asking him to come back as his bodyguard. At Seol-woo’s lackluster response, Woon-kwang turns serious and thanks Seol-woo for keeping his promise. He asks if everything that’s happened was really a disguise and a mission, with no feelings involved. Seol-woo says it was, but when Woon-kwang presses him, something in Seol-woo’s eyes wavers.
Woon-kwang brings up memories of their time together—like when they ran across the bridge hand-in-hand—and that’s when Seol-woo realizes that Woon-kwang’s referring to Seol-woo’s relationship with the celebrity, not Do-ha. At that, Seol-woo confidently confirms again that there were no real feelings whatsoever on his part.
Disappointed, Woon-kwang asks if his answers are applicable to Do-ha as well: Did he just use her too? Seol-woo says yes, but then comments that this mission was the first in which he made a mistake, since he got angry when he found out about Do-ha’s abduction.
Over drinks, Do-ha spills the news to Song-yi that her relationship with Seol-woo is over. Song-yi can’t believe what a jerk Seol-woo turned out to be—he even somehow erased his photos from Do-ha’s phone—but Do-ha says that she’s just going to forget him. She says she’ll be okay soon, since she has Song-yi and Woon-kwang by her side.
Back at Seol-woo’s, Woon-kwang reiterates that same point, saying that he’ll be there for Do-ha and make sure that she’s okay. Seol-woo tells Woon-kwang that he shouldn’t come back any more, but Woon-kwang says he’s actually there for a personal reason. He asks Seol-woo to confirm what he already knows: that Mi-eun helped install Seol-woo as his bodyguard. Woon-kwang asks what kind of connections Mi-eun might have with the NIS.
Sharon and Department Head Jang catch up at a bar, where Sharon laments Mi-eun’s impossible choice, given her love for both Woon-kwang and Seung-jae. Department Head Jang thinks she doesn’t love either man and says she made the wrong choice in sticking with Seung-jae.
Just then, Dong-hyun calls Department Head Jang with the news that they’ve found Agent Yoon’s body. Ooh, so Ki-chul sold out Songsan! Department Head Jang wonders if Songsan and Assemblyman Baek will try to cover up the murder, but Dong-hyun’s one step ahead, having called reporters to the scene already.
As expected, the discovery of Agent Yoon’s body is all over the news, and reports are connecting the death to Songsan. After watching the coverage, Seung-jae tells Assemblyman Baek that he should have taken his advice to kill Ki-chul. Assemblyman Baek’s not so worried, though—he tells Seung-jae that all they need to close the murder case is a murderer. Looking down at Myung-suk’s business card, he says that he has someone in mind.
And just like that, two policemen burst into Song-yi’s restaurant and arrest Myung-suk for the murder of Agent Yoon. He’s taken for questioning, but the police seem to already have everything they need to prove Myung-suk’s guilt, from a motive to video evidence of Myung-suk going through Agent Yoon’s shop.
When Seol-woo hears the news, he tells Dong-hyun that it makes absolutely no sense that Myung-suk would be the murderer. Dong-hyun agrees that something’s off, but he says the police investigation report looks to be in order and that Ki-chul’s keeping mum about the whole thing.
Dong-hyun meets with Do-ha and Woon-kwang next, who are looking to him for help in proving Myung-suk’s innocence. Do-ha’s convinced that the Black Auction ring has something to do with Myung-suk’s arrest, but when she asks for the truth, Dong-hyun just asks for Do-ha’s trust and patience.
Outside Ki-chul’s interrogation room, Dong-hyun wonders about Ki-chul’s motives for leading them to Agent Yoon’s body. Seol-woo’s more curious about Ki-chul’s reasons for reaching out to him through the ghost agent code, so he decides to ask him directly.
Seol-woo takes a seat across from Ki-chul, and the former ghost agent opens right up, telling him that he has evidence on Agent Yoon’s real killer. When Seol-woo asks what Ki-chul wants for himself, he replies, “A certain someone’s death.”
Back at Songsan, Assemblyman Baek and Seung-jae engage in more shady business when the assemblyman gets a call. Assemblyman Baek then tells Seung-jae that everything is going as planned, and Seung-jae says they should move to the next phase.
The next thing we know, our senior NIS agents are ambushed at once: Department Head Jang is fired (and told that his special activities fund is frozen), while over at the prosector’s office, authorities arrest Dong-hyun for corruption and abuse of authority.
Department Head Jang calls out Seol-woo to relay the gravity of the situation, telling him that it looks like Songsan is behind the recent turn of events. When Seol-woo asks about the Black Auction mission, Department Head Jang says that they need to find another way, which doesn’t sit well with Seol-woo.
Seol-woo says they’ll have failed their mission—and are as good as abandoning Dong-hyun and Myung-suk—if Songsan gets their hands on the second wood carving. But Department Head Jang says sharply that they need to wait, because there is no other way. He tells Seol-woo that the mission is off.
Seol-woo interprets that to mean that they have no plan right now, which raises a flag for Department Head Jang. But by the time he looks up to ask Seol-woo what he’s planning to do, Seol-woo’s already gone.
Back at the police station, a handcuffed Ki-chul enters the elevator, escorted by two policemen. When the elevator doors open on the next floor up, the policemen are unconscious on the ground, and all that remains of Ki-chul are his handcuffs.
Mi-eun casually drops Department Head Jang’s name in conversation with Seung-jae, saying that he happens to be Sharon’s new boyfriend. Seung-jae notes this information in amusement, undoubtedly filing it away for later, while Mi-eun seems pleased with his reaction.
Now it’s Dong-hyun’s turn in the interrogation room, where a prosecutor digs through his files in a feeble attempt to find evidence of corruption or bribery. The prosecutor soon admits to a skeptical Dong-hyun that all he’s doing is following orders from above, and Dong-hyun leans in to ask who’s issuing those orders.
In the car, Assemblyman Baek receives a call from Ki-chul, who pleads for another chance as he promises to eliminate Ghost Agent K and deliver the wood carving. And in a different car, Seung-jae intercepts Department Head Jang on his way home, asking if he has a moment to talk.
Woon-kwang tries to assure Do-ha that Myung-suk will be okay, but Do-ha’s unconvinced, especially since Dong-hyun’s now MIA. She says that she’s not sure if she can trust the police, the prosecutors, or the NIS, which reminds Woon-kwang of something similar that Seol-woo had said when they were planning Do-ha’s rescue. Woon-kwang tells Do-ha that there’s only one more person left to trust.
They end up outside Seol-woo’s place, where Woon-kwang relays Seol-woo’s words about being unable to trust the NIS to Do-ha. Do-ha’s just surprised that Seol-woo still lives at this same place, and Woon-kwang just says that he didn’t want to complicate things for Do-ha.
A few beats later, Do-ha catches a glimpse of Seol-woo walking home, and her eyes go soft for a moment before flashing with anger. Before Woon-kwang can stop her, she races out of the car and storms up to Seol-woo, grabbing him and raising her arm as if to strike him. But she’s no match for Seol-woo, who immediately blocks her attack and twists her around so that he’s got her trapped in his arms.
She freezes for a moment, looking up at him with wide eyes, then she shakes him off. After getting a dig in about him disappearing without a word, she sarcastically thanks him for saving her life. When Seol-woo replies that he was just doing his job, she punches him in the stomach (which, ow.) Shaking her hand out from the pain, Do-ha tells him that she’ll never forgive him for lying to her.
Assemblyman Baek visits Dong-hyun in the interrogation room, where he tells Dong-hyun to hand over the wood carving and stay away from the NIS. Dong-hyun sneers at the assemblyman’s threats and refuses to comply, telling him that people don’t change that easily.
The other half of our villainous duo works Department Head Jang for the wood carving as well. Seung-jae offers to make Department Head Jang the head of NIS if he hands over the carving, but Department Head Jang won’t take the deal. So Seung-jae makes sure to mention Sharon’s name before he leaves, reminding the NIS agent that Sharon and Mi-eun are good friends.
Back at Seol-woo’s, Woon-kwang tells Seol-woo they can’t get in touch with Dong-hyun. When Seol-woo asks for more time, Woon-kwang asks if there’s a plan, and if there’s anything he can do to help. Seol-woo looks straight at Woon-kwang and says there is a way to help: He needs five million dollars to continue the mission. Do-ha’s jaw drops, and Woon-kwang almost falls off his chair as he repeats the amount in disbelief.
COMMENTS
YES—this is exactly what I was hoping for when Woon-kwang first partnered with Seol-woo to rescue Do-ha. I love that our trio is back together, but this time, all three are on a level playing field–at least in terms of what they know about Seol-woo, anyway. I’m excited that they’re putting their heads together (along with Woon-kwang’s awesome martial arts skills, of course) in support of the bigger mission at hand, and I can’t wait to see what kinds of hijinks unfold as they press on with the Black Auction plan. Though Seol-woo’s tendency to “go rogue” might be a headache for our NIS ajusshis, it sure does make things more entertaining for us!
It’s kind of funny that once Seol-woo was basically all out of options, he was perfectly fine with partnering back up with Woon-kwang and Do-ha—essentially rendering his whole “I’m disappearing forever” move completely useless. After his emotional response to watching Do-ha break down in tears (kudos to both Park Hae-jin and Kim Min-jung for being amazing in that scene, by the way), I thought he’d maybe put up a little more resistance to having Do-ha and Woon-kwang waltz right back into his life. I mean, I’m sure he wants to get Dong-hyun out of trouble and is all about completing the wood carving mission, but I think having Myung-suk involved is also a key factor in his decision to keep going—he can’t, after all, sit back and watch as both Do-ha’s love life and her father are left in ruins, can he?
Woon-kwang continues to surprise me with his levelheaded reactions to this weird scenario that he’s been thrust into. I wasn’t expecting Woon-kwang to support Seol-woo’s decision to disappear from Do-ha’s life after he rescued her, and I certainly wasn’t thinking that Woon-kwang would continue his brotherly affections for the agent. But I guess it makes sense, considering Woon-kwang’s extreme sense of loyalty to his people. He showed it again this hour by sticking like glue to Do-ha’s side after her kidnapping–the way he cares for Do-ha and knows exactly what she needs always gets to me. I won’t be mad if Seol-woo’s now forever cemented his place in Woon-kwang’s life as his “brother,” given that he did save Do-ha’s life, especially if it means I get to watch the two further develop this reluctant (on one side, at least) bromance.
Kim Min-jung is really impressing me in her role as Do-ha, and I’m completely won over by this character now. Her reaction to Seol-woo’s true identity and disappearance was so raw and real, teetering back and forth between murderous rage and aching sadness. My favorite moment for her this episode was when she marched up to Seol-woo to confront him—I just love that she was able to say and do everything that she wanted to, from sarcastically thanking him for saving her life to punching him and then basically moving on. She went through so many emotions in that one scene, and it was really well done.
Though the rest of our supporting cast members aren’t as multi-dimensional as our main characters, I do find Ki-chul interesting in his parallels with our ghost agent hero. Like Seol-woo, Ki-chul’s motivations are difficult to pin down, and I’m not sure where his loyalties lie at this moment. Who is he after? He can’t really be on a mission to get back into Assemblyman Baek’s good graces (or Seung-jae’s, for that matter), after being abandoned by them, can he?
Similarly, I can’t figure out what was up with Mi-eun feeding Seung-jae the gossip on Sharon and Department Head Jang’s relationship. I wonder if she’s trying to earn back Seung-jae’s trust after he threatened to take her son away, or if she has a bigger plan that she’s working on. I’m not that curious about what the “secret” connecting her to the NIS might be, but if it has the potential to blow up her marriage to Seung-jae, resulting in some Woon-kwang/Seol-woo/Do-ha tag team action to save her from her twisted husband, I’d totally be up for that.

I was so impressed with CDH's level headedness at the beginning of the episode in just wanting to get to the bottom of things without prejudging too much. She only really got mad when he disappeared without an explanation or saying goodbye. I find her very perceptive and on some level she must have known that it wasn't all just an act on his part.
Sorry what I really meant to say was:
But one really has to admire KSW's way with words... his "You're the most dangerous person to me" might be the equivalent of The Princess Bride's "As you wish".

Do-ha is shown to be perceptive right from the start when she was the only one sniffing Seol-woo out and found him fishy. I already liked Do-ha when I saw her reaction to Seol-woo's swoony line, "Because you're pretty." There was nothing special in her reaction, but I liked that she handled it so well even though she was slightly affected by it.
And I was swooning so hard when Seol-woo said, "You're the most dangerous person to me." If that's not a confession, I don't know what is.

That's why I think she's a real good fit for him. She was on to him from the first. :D
But I think it's from growing up with a con artist... she's had to have her wits about her.
Even when she was very extreme in those first two episodes, I could see that she had a good head on those shoulders.

Be still my heart.. I too like where the story is headed. The partnership with SeolWoo and WoonKwang is pure brilliance. And I am at ease with knowing that atleast SeolWoo is no longer deceiving the duo on his identity.
I am softening towards DoHa and KMJ acting tore through my heart.

When Seol-Woo ripped off his old man mask I was disappointed we didn't get any "Underneath this mask... IS ANOTHER MASK!" There's still hope, though.
I love this trio partnership: I knew it was always meant to be but it came earlier than I was expecting. Is it just me or are these episodes going by real quick?
I still don't know what the hell is up with those carvings. I feel like if the writers wanted us to care about something they could make it more ~scandalous~ than a block of shaped wood.

I feel the same about the pace of this show! I feel like "wow, all this has happened already and now we are here..." but at the same time feel like "wow, we are halfway through this show already what more wil happen?!" Loving where this show has taken us and feel like at this pace who knows what will happen! Love how this show is keeping us on edge, wanting more!

TBH, I am fairly convinced that that wood carvings are just a MacGuffin at this point. (A MacGuffin is a film term used to describe a goal or the object that the protagonist pursues but is not actually important to the overall story or plot - often used in the thriller genre). I could be pleasantly surprised (and do hope there is a twist somewhere), but overall I'm glad any scene devoted to discussing the wood carvings is very brief.

Probably because we're enjoying the show so much that it breezes past. I think the partnership comes right on time, I'm only nervous because we're halfway through the show and they still haven't retrieved the second wood carving, which meant to expose the Songsan Group's slush fund. I want to get these all out of the system so we can focus on the romance better, or more, whichever works.

Well, I think they wanted to get the team together first before getting to the second one. In a way, he couldn't have gotten the first one without UG or DH so likewise it had to be the same here. Whether he knows it or not, he needs them for all the wood carvings.
It's rather like a computer game... they up the ante with each new level.

Such a great pair of episodes and I'm so excited with the kind of setup we have going into next week. It's almost like the battle is now starting, even though we've already come so far. And we still get more of the humor and the bromance.
Gotta how how when PHJ took off his disguise, his hair was still perfect. I can barely get my hair to look the same when I walk outside.

On Seol Woo: "You're the most dangerous person to me" - SW's confession to DH that his actions were not 100% fake, even though I don't think she understood. She's "dangerous" because she makes him want to be real with her, and to protect her even if it puts his job at risk.
Favourite SW moments this week include
- When he noticed her cuts and felt angry but couldn't do anything about it
- When he played with the coin because it was the one thing of "hers" that he could hold onto, and thought about all their moments together
- When he looked at her crying on CCTV, looking like he wanted to cry too, and also a little unsure and afraid, as though whatever he was feeling was completely new to him
- When he reached out his hand like he wanted to touch and comfort her, but could only switch off the screen
SW's holding himself back because he knows going to her would endanger his missions and DH. Somehow, I can't bring myself to call it noble idiocy because I think SW has lived and breathed as a ghost for so long that to him, this is just another mission, and his modus operandi is to leave regardless of what he feels. Because he can't risk endangering her, or his job. DH has a supportive little family around her, but at the end of the day, SW's back to a nameless, faceless ghost. It's a lonely life. (I know he can choose both DH and his job, but look how much Donghyun's wife hates it - never knowing if he will come back safe, or even come back at all.)
I wonder if SW's ever been in a real relationship (before he became a ghost?). For all his master manipulations in romancing, he's unsure of what to do with his own feelings. Again, probably an "occupational hazard", because he's never had the luxury of expressing his own emotions. I'm looking forward to seeing how WK and DH's warmth can melt his ghost-exterior and uncover the real SW.
On Do Ha: When WK demonstrated to her how actors could pretend they loved you and she flashbacked to SW's smiley/tender scenes, I wonder if she actually thought that SW had been genuine, but brushed it off to let the matter drop, or if she'd really agreed with WK? What do you guys think?
What I felt from DH wasn't really anger toward SW for lying (even if she said that), but for leaving without a word, because she never got "closure". What I felt was relief that he was fine and still contactable, because she really cared for him. I think she'd sort of accepted that he had had a mission, but still believed he was a good person, even as she punched him. And that's what I love about DH - she gives love so easily; she wears her heart on her sleeve and isn't afraid of expressing her emotions, which is the exact thing that makes her so easy to love.

On Woon Kwang: I honestly love how he still keeps calling SW "brother". WK really made me feel all warm and fuzzy when he told SW not to worry because he would be there for both DH and SW, which shows how he's accepted SW into their little family. I think WK sees right through SW and even if he doesn't know the exact details, he understands the pain of SW's dilemmas and choices. He trusts SW and believes he's a good person and that he actually cared for DH. I say it all the time but I'll say it again - how awesome is WK?
On Ki Chul: Ok, HOW did he get out of the lift from level 4 to 5? I can't seem to put my finger on him. So, he told them Yoon's location, and he and SW had that talk. What was the conclusion? Did SW make a deal with him? I can't imagine who let two normal guards bring a ghost agent someplace without additional backup. KC's a person without any loyalties, and I almost want his reassociation with Congressman Baek to be a fakeout, with him as a two-timing agent. Is it a bad thing that I'm even more interested in KC than Baek/SJ such that I almost want him to be a "good person"? I'm kind of interested in knowing his backstory: what made him go rogue, and did it have something to do with the person he wants dead?

You always manage to sum up how I feel about Do-ha so succinctly. I love how she was willing to give Seol-woo the benefit of the doubt despite his half-truths. I think she wanted to believe that even if Seol-woo was using her, the moments they spent together wasn't necessarily a lie. I just love Do-ha so much, I don't know what to do about it.

I think she wanted to believe that, too. That even though he'd done it for his mission, he hadn't been necessarily 100% fake. I think the fact that he put his life on the line to save hers really made her trust him. How could you stay angry with the man who did everything to save you, even if he'd lied to you from the start? :/
Her character is so open and trusting, and while it may seem almost "naive", I believe she's smart enough to take on SW. I really love her!

I think she has a shell of distrust and self protection protecting her desire to be truely cared for and not abandoned due to her father. She has a life time of experience loving someone who lies to her and betrays her repeatedly for self interest. Although she is hurt by the relevation of K and the surface parallels to her relationship with her father, she does sense that it is not the same. He risked his life to rescue her while her father never protected her in difficult situations.

Everything you said is 100%. The fact that he came back for her instead of running away like her father did in front of the creditors is probably what made her forgive him for lying. First So-rim, now Do-ha. If this is a new trend for heroines, I hope it sticks.

That time when WK showed her that actors could pretend they love their partner, I think that she associated it right away to all the things SW did to her and she may not have dismissed them as lies right away, I believe she already doubted everything. I sensed it from what she said "Oh so you could really lie with your eyes."

Noble idiocy for me is when one holds back from the other person for the sake of his/her happiness when it's unnecessary. Judging from his out-of-character behavior in episode 7 and the way he lashed out at Do-ha's father, I was convinced he would leave her (aside from the obvious reasons - his job and mission) because he couldn't bear to endanger her. And in episode 8, I felt more strongly for this reasoning when Seol-woo said he was angry when Do-ha got abducted, it felt like he was blaming himself for failing to protect her and for feeling that way at the same time, hence why he told Do-ha, she was the most dangerous person to him.
As for Do-ha, I think she knew Seol-woo wasn't entirely faking it and she felt his sincerity. What hurt her was not his deception, but a sense of abandonment when he left without a goodbye, it mirrored her relationship with her father where she felt fear over being abandoned at the funeral house.
Woon-kwang is forever the awesome oppa, I love that he became the mediator for both Seol-woo and Do-ha. When he found out the deception, he told Seol-woo to leave Do-ha, but upon seeing Do-ha's heartbroken face, he switched to trying to win Seol-woo over to his family, but when that didn't work, he went back to being Do-ha's oppa by asking Seol-woo not to worry over Do-ha. Dang, I want one Woon-kwang in my life.

Your point about noble idiocy makes sense! It's just that... Usually I feel very angsty and frustrated whenever there's noble idiocy and somehow I don't feel it here. Maybe I'm just biased? ? Or maybe I just empathize with SW. But I do agree with you that he's definitely holding back because he's afraid that she'll be in danger.

I cried so much in this episode, all the spoken and unspoken moments between Seol-woo and Do-ha, or Seol-woo and Woon-kwang, or Woon-kwang and Do-ha tore my heart. But I can always count on Woon-kwang oppa to break the somber mood, I laughed for a bit when Do-ha claimed she would kill Seol-woo in tears and asked Woon-kwang to buy her a gun, Woon-kwang's shifty eyes and face expression were priceless!

I loved this episode a lot, I thought it was great but one thing that felt a little off to me was Seol-woo's emotions! In the previous recaps, I kept saying how confusing he was and wished that we'd get to know how he really feels about Do-ha and this episode showed us exactly that, but I was a little taken aback, I knew he was affected by her, I had no doubt that he cared for her, but maybe I was not expecting this emotional reaction from him, I wasn't expecting it to be this deep, it didn't look like he just liked her, it looked like he was in love with her.
Why am I saying this? The indirect confession, saying she is dangerous to him? That is because he can't afford to make mistakes in his missions but he keeps making them when it comes to her, his mind is occupied with thoughts of her! When Do-ha asked him if it all was just a mission, how he swallowed before answering her? The way he hesitated before answering Woon-kwang when he asked him about his true feelings? The scene when she came to his place, found it empty and brokedown in tears? the way he looked while watching her, his eyes got red and watery and it was written all over his face! I can't be the only one thinking he's in love with her, right? But I don't understand how? How this soon? I wanted him to struggle a bit with his emotions, I wanted to see conflict in him, I wanted him to fight it first so when he finally gives in to it, a whole new world opens up to him, I just wanted to see him a little torn because this just makes everything so simple, no? Am I being dramatic?
My heart broke for Do-ha but I wish this makes her a little stronger than before and this time she wouldn't let Seol-woo off so fast, even if she knows it was for a mission he still played with her heart, she should at least get him to apologize before even considering to forgive him, that punch was not enough!

Woon-kwang made me laugh hard when he asked Seol-woo if he had no feelings at all, I really thought he was talking about Do-ha but then he cracked me up when he talked about running together holding hands, he's so silly I love him! Even when he asked Seol-woo to disappear from Do-ha's life, he couldn't cut him off of his, he's already too attached to him to let him go, and when he offered him double the pay to get him back, aww!
I'm excited for the next episode, now that the NIS fund is frozen for Seol-woo's mission, he doesn't have another option but to return to being Kim Guard, it's going to be fun to watch how both Woon-kwang and Do-ha will treat him knowing his real identity!
And that new agent girl made me yell: Take your hands off of my Oppa!!!

In episode 9 preview, I love how Seol-woo was like, I'll guard you 24/7 and stick close to you, knowing that pleases Woon-kwang so much just to get the 5 millions! LOL. It looks like romancing Woon-kwang is next on his list, after this episode where he said he had absolutely no feeling for Woon-kwang. HAHA.
I'm not worried about the new girl though, she might be just a one time appearance.

I always feel so iffy calling it love when he's only known her for such a short time - but hey I've only known her for 8 episodes and I love her already, LOL. So I'll settle for saying that he really, REALLY cares about her. More than he's ever cared about anything else for a long time, I'd say. She's probably making him feel things that he had to lock away for the sake of being a ghost agent.
Agh I am SO psyched to see him back as Kim Guard! Two more days until I get my MXM fix!

Same. I like everything. I like where this is going. I liked how Seol woo had tears in his eyes when he watched her crying. I like how he accepted them to help him at the end. And yet I still don't feel convinced that he loves her. Is it just me!? I keep seeing the old Seol Woo. The one who walked away from his girlfriend in Russia, car burning behind him. Didn't he feel anything for her at all? If that was a mission, what about going after Do Ha for the ring? Why is it any different to what he did before?
I agree with you when you say you want Seol Woo to be a little more torn. It's just too soon for him to accept that he likes her. At least tell us why you like her!

Hmm...I've been reading the comments about is it really love? My two cents on this: there are many different kind of loves and different stages of love. There is love at first sight! Love that starts as enemies and turns into lovers! First love that starts in Kindergarten (what can I say, kdrama!)....etc. For SW, I think he definitely felt something different about DH from the first time he met her. Maybe his line "you 're pretty" came from his true self and not agent K. He could have said anything really. When DH looked at the photos he took, there were a lot of hers! So maybe unconsciously he was already drawn to her. And he has been having that "bad" feeling. The fact that he has a "feeling" at all must be huge for Robot K. So I don't think it is love, for either SW or DH, but it is the beginning of love for both of them. I think right now they are both "attracted to/intrigued by each other and exploring their feelings (bad feeling for SW) but they are not at the "love of my life" stage, but of course will get there! So his saving her, being concerned/worried right now does not have to be love yet. Caring, yes. And caring is a big step towards love. And for DH, because of his persistence that they "date" she went along with it and maybe was more into the romance since she had a "beau", but their feelings are not deep...yet! But we are seeing them getting there and I have no problem accepting/believing in their relationship that is enfolding in front of us.

I like your take on this. I agree that he cares for Do ha. I can see that from his actions. He was ready to throw away his job to go and rescue her.
And I agree that I didn't think about his "you're pretty" statement having more meaning than just stating the fact.
So while you say he is attracted to Do ha, I guess I just want him to show that in a way that makes me see that he does like her. Not just tears in his eyes...but something more open. Lol, I guess I just want to hear him say I like you Do ha.
Hopefully working with Do ha and Woon kwang will open him up a bit in the coming episodes.

Well, I think the conflict within SW is that he likes Do-ha but doesn't want to like her...because she is too dangerous for him, and because that does not happen on a mission and he is supposed to be a ghost robot agent. So in a way, he has already shown us he likes her by trying not to like her and wanting to stay away from her. And going rogue when he didn't have to be involved in saving her. Both D-hyun and Mr Jang can see it too in the way SW is not the same agent K they know. Maybe I'm used to the classic Kdramas where it takes forever for one of the OTP to say I like you or I love you, so I can be patient! We know it's coming, "the grand reveal!", hopefully we don't have to wait for the last 10 minutes of the last episode! But I like the setup in Man x Man. Kiss first, then fall in love! But overall, I am really just enjoying how their relationships are developing, for our 3 musketeers! Personally, I don't need them to say I love you. Just like when WK said it to D-ha...that was a perfect example of how saying it doesn't have to mean anything. I'll take puppy eyes over words! Haha...but yes, it will be nice once/when they declare their love, being Man x Man I hope they can surprise us in its delivery! And yes, having WK as a big brother can only help SW--we hope!

Ok, you got me. I really like what you said there. So he likes her, knows he shouldn't, thus, he's trying to keep himself away from her. Why didn't I think of it that way. I've made it too complicated for myself, hehe. I saw them as individuals and I liked them individually. I couldn't see any obvious signs of Seol-woo liking Do ha, so I was just waiting for more gestures and actions from Seol woo. Turns out I have watched him closely enough!
I think I'll watch the upcoming episodes with more of an open mind lol.
But yea, Kdramas do drag on the whole I like you/love you statement. But in most circumstances it's easy to see that the lead guy is obviously in love.
But here, Seol-woo is supposed to be stoic so I guess that's why his feelings were less obvious to me.

It was the abduction that made him realize how much he cared for her. He went berserk when he found out that the watch had been bugged.That was the turning point of the show.
I think he liked her for many reasons:
She constantly surprises him. He finds her refreshing.
She makes him laugh. He has fun when he's with her.
She sees through his facade.
They are alike in many ways.
She is brave on the outside but frail inside - this touches a core with him, she moves him in ways other women have never done before.

Definitely! There are many scenes that showed us how she affects him! Even at the beginning, when she caught him taking pictures and stealing while no one else took notice, when he saw her in the white dress, when she did the magic trick with the coin... you can tell he felt something/saw something in her. It's like each time she got to him. And then with her dad, that really got to him too, he was there for her. She is really such a good match for him, she can actually get to the man underneath, and meet him on his level, or bring him to her level? Anyways, they are perfect for each other!

Exactly! I hope it's not love, at least not yet, because I'm not convinced on how he can fall for her this soon! I need to know why her, why Do-ha? He's been in a lot of missions before, a lot of other targets so what is it that got him feel this way for her! Now that he'll be working with her without playing her, I guess we'll get to see the real him around her and maybe get answers to our questions!

I want him and her to flirt a lot, be happy and do all kinds of lovey-dovey stuff, I want them to say, "Oh, I was just faking that for the mission", but they'd look deep into each other's eyes, and we'd know they're not faking it, that it's real.
It's great now that she knows he faked it...can't wait to see her say, "I can't stop thinking about you", and he'd be like so rattled, and then she'll just laugh in his face and say, "Did you really fall for that line? Pathetic..." and walk off.

Yes to lots of flirting. And I love that scenario with Do-ha playing Seol-woo at his game. He had played so many people in the past and broken a few hearts along the way, I don't mind an unconventional girl rattles his world and teaches him the right way to love.

I feel the way you do, I was shocked at the extent of his feelings for her - I was stunned at the part he looked at the monitor and his face was like in such pain. The earlier scenes were okay to me because he still displayed composure despite obviously liking her. But this was just so unexpected, I know he likes her, I didn't know he loves her? Because seems that way to me, it's not just liking her a lot anymore, it's like he's fallen totally, completely head over heels for her.
So I'm going to tell myself it's the abduction that triggered this new depth of feelings. The abduction made him realize how close he came to losing her, and the thought of losing her is unbearable to him; he cannot contemplate a world without DH.

In my POV I can really see him falling for her. We've been going back and forth here discussing if he fell for her or not... I've been on the side of he had no feelings for her in episode 5 but darn I was confused in episode 6 and episode 7 confirmed that he really is in love with her.

I love the "Mission Impossible mask" moment and I hate Seung-jae! What he did to his wife...there are no words!

I thought the old man during the mission impossible mask moment was rather stiff for the entire scene. He seemed like a robot walking to and fro the place. It was quite disconcerting, watching him during that scene.

Hmm, getting married and having the enemy's child for the sake of a mission sounds too far-fetched for a secret agent theory. I'm just thinking she loved Woon-kwang but tempted by Seung-jae's riches more, so she married the latter but regretted it, so she was trying to ease the guilt by helping Woon-kwang.

I LOVED this episode! It made me cry, and it made me laugh ... I was blown away by Park Hae Jin's expression over and over again ... so much was conveyed by his silent glances and looks ... i really felt it tug at my heart ... the team up at the end ... made me so excited for episode 9 ... can't wait for the weekend!!!!

I loved, loved Do-ha here! When she said she wanted to kill SW with tears in her eyes! Hurt but still feisty! I like that she was not mopping around and was able to get back on her feet quickly! SW is well matched here.
Loved WK! He is such a deep, caring guy underneath his super star persona! Such a good oppa to Do-ha! They are so good to each other! And still being a brother to SW! His character really ties the two together!
I am so happy the three of them are really joining forces! Three lonely souls who found each other! So glad SW has them!
When SW said to the other lady that if she wanted romance they should have put it in the contract! Ouch! But also so sad...as that is how he has been living his life. So glad we get to see him in his transition...it's time he gets to live his own life! And so far WK and DH are perfect for him!
Anyone else notice his blinking eyes whenever he looks at Do-ha? When they kept repeating the sleeping scene, when they met again...it's like he is "caressing" her with his eyes! Ok, maybe I'm just reading too much into his expressions! I guess he does blink at WK too! Maybe it's just the way PHJ blinks? This is my first time watching him here, maybe that's just his natural gaze!
I too don't understand why ME told SJ about Sharon...as you said, is it a "gift" to get back in his favors? And if Jang is correct and she doesn't really love either SJ or WK, then I hope she and SJ stay together and hope WK will still have a happy ending, without her! WK is too good for her!
Can't wait to see SW, DH and WK work together! The three musketeers! They belong together, all 3 of them! Love the pace of this show! Thanks for the recap!

Ah, I loved this episode so much! For a show that is light and funny most of the time, Man To Man can really turn on a dime and hit you in the feels.
Cha Do Ha - For a show purportedly about bromance, I am surprised and happy at how much I love the female character. She has become one of my favorite female kdrama characters in recent memory. She is so honest and open with her feelings but also brave in how she faced her abduction and confronted Seoul Woo. Even though Seol Woo has played with her emotions and needs to apologize, I feel like Cha Do Ha is stong enough to handle him.
Woong Kwang - I love him more each episode. I thought he would be more angry at Seol Woo, but I feel that Woong Kwang sees the "real" Seol Woo and that's why he loves him. I like the fact that both CDH and WK could seem like fools for falling for SW's act, but they don't because SW's act with them doesn't feel like an act (i.e. It is clear he really likes him despite what he says).
Seol Woo - If you had told me at the beginning of the series that I would know no more abou Seol Woo's background at the halfway point than the beginning, I would have thought that would be frustrating. However, surprisingly it doesn't feel like an issue. So often, providing background for a character is shorthand for understanding them, but I feel I am getting to know the "real" Seol Woo more and more anyway. When we get to some actual background on him, it might feel redundant.
I can't wait for the next episode! This is the first kdrama in a while that had had that crack! drama feeling for me.

Yes, strangely, I find that I don't really care so much that I know nothing about SW. I almost like that he remains an enigma. I am curious about his past, but I don't feel overly frustrated that I know nothing about it because like you said, somehow I can feel the "real" him through all the little moments!
I'm also amazed at how much I like DH! And I like what you said about how they might seem like fools for falling for his act, but in reality it's because they can see through his "fake" actions.
Thank goodness for the hilarious bromance in this show! I remember how SWDBS promised bromance hijinks and none of that happened. I'm always up for a good bromance.

I don't feel frustrated not knowing about SW's past. Primarily because he has been a ghost agent for so long that he lives and breathes his work. I feel he is more defined by his work as compared to his past.

For a second i thought that Seol Woo would really disappear, but i guess the mission wasn't over so he couldn't leave yet? I like to think that Do-ha somehow is making him stay though, speaking of this, Do-ha was so right about being upset that Seol-woo didn't even said goodbye or apologized and he knew she wouldn't cling to him asking to stay, instead, she wanted to understand what happened between them and what was real and what wasn't? i think he wasn't ready to answer her (that's the only explanation i could think of).
Ngl the wood carving saga doesn't interest me at all lol, i just like seeing Seol-woo, Do-ha and Woon-kwang interactions and their character developments.

Thank you dear chocolatte for your weekly insights. I was eagerly waiting for this recap. By reading your recap and review I sometimes catch things I missed and also this forum is a great way to discuss this show. Love this platform.
I think SW realizes that he never cared for anything before and all of a sudden Do-ha is is his life now. He is not ready for this big change and how the writer has planned his adjustment, I wonder.
Scenario 1: He really does get away/run away for a while. He said in the first ep "I dont trust myself". He might literally take Woon-Kwang's money and run away.
Scenario 2: Events keep making him hang around Do-ha until he comes to the conclusion he doesn't want a life without her. (I would enjoy that)
I am hoping that Do-ha stays the same honest, wearing her heart on her sleeves character. Do-ha's words are so direct and her reactions so pure and honest. And KSW gets drawn in and makes "errors" because even he cant fight her straight forward approach. I liked how she said "How can i trust you" in the end. She gets right to the point.
Regarding Woon-Kwang: It was so funny when he was asking Kim Seol-Woo about feelings and KSW was hesitating and then we realised he meant feelings between him and KSW lol.
Does KSW realise SW has genuine feelings forDo-ha? I think he does
Secondly KSW telling Do-ha I love you. I think he was acting. But its a bit tricky.
Anyway loving the show. I wish it was 20 episode not 16. I want more and more and more

I think Woon-kwang oppa knew Seol-woo's true feeling, hence why he tried to get Seol-woo back as Kim Guard, he wishy washy between getting the two together and not together mostly because he cared for Do-ha too much to let her get hurt in the end. I can't wait to see the day oppa marries off his brother and sister, that sounds so wrong. Lol

I'm digging this starting partnership between Seol-woo, Woon-kwang and Do-ha, and I love that it starts on a clean slate (after uncovering all of Seol-woo's lies). I love our 3 main leads, and I'm mainly invested in the OTP's romance, but Woon-kwang's brotherly affection for both Do-ha and Seol-woo just melts me like butter in the afternoon sun. Woon-kwang warned Seol-woo before not to hurt Do-ha, but when the time came, one punch and a promise settled it all (of course, I'm not expecting him to kill Seol-woo), yet his words rang true, before Seol-woo was his brother, Do-ha was already his sister, so naturally he would look out for both even though he was mostly on Do-ha's side. I love that he would actively seek out Seol-woo too and affectionately called him "brother". I even teared up for a bit when he offered Seol-woo money to come back as Kim Guard, I think I can watch this show for his relationship with Do-ha alone, I love how protective he is when it comes to her, and how he would do anything to ensure her happiness, sometimes I feel like he's more of a father to Do-ha than her real father ever was, and I'm happy to see the same affection extended to Robot Seol-woo because he clearly needed the love 101 from Woon-kwang.
Before this episode, I didn't realize Seol-woo felt deeply for Do-ha. I know he cared and liked her, but I didn't imagine it was to this extent. The scene where she broke down and he couldn't bear to watch it was touching but slightly jarring to me. On one hand, this is clearly satisfying my romance quota, on the other hand, because we barely saw any clues as to how Seol-woo really felt for Do-ha, this felt like a huge leap. I'm not saying I didn't like it, but I wish we were clued in to Seol-woo's feelings more, so that this wouldn't feel so clashing. I get that he was trained to be this way, or that being a secret agent prevented him from developing feelings, but Seol-woo is still just a human, it is natural for him to fall for someone and be affected by it. I can't wait to see Do-ha shake Seol-woo's world more after they start this partnership.
I don't think it's weird that Seol-woo is willing to partner up with Woon-kwang and Do-ha after the whole parting, because Seol-woo proved himself to be an opportunist and he doesn't mind going to the extreme if it means completing a mission, i.e. going against order in the first episode to save the little girl, risking his life to save Woon-kwang, and even going rogue to save Do-ha. Besides, the stake is higher now that more people are let in on the mission and involved in it, I'm just nervous that we're barely on second wood carving mission and there is still more to the whole wood carving fiasco, which is to uncover the corruption/slush fund behind Songsan Group. At this point, I don't think anyone is interested in the wood carvings or the baddies anymore, but I'm hoping this plot wouldn't be rendered completely useless.

I didn't think it was weird that he would pair up with DH and WK either, but I thought it was kind of hilarious because one moment he was all "I'm done, I'm leaving", and the next moment "Ok I need your help I need $5M", LOL. Sometimes I just think the whole wood carvings and slush funds are just plot devices conveniently inserted in to make them spend more time with each other, but I guess it's kind of... difficult for me personally to really be interested in the baddies? Everytime I watch a show I just want the baddies to go downnnnn asap, lol.
For SW, I don't think him looking at the CCTV was really a strong love per se, but maybe... just a moment of overwhelming feelings. What I thought was that he was feeling a lot of things he'd never let himself feel, but he couldn't afford himself the luxury of doing so, so he turned off the screen and left for mission part 2. Poor thing! :'(

Lol, Seol-woo's nonchalant face when he said he needed 5 million dollars like he was just asking 5 bucks from Woon-kwang, I love Woon-kwang's reaction to that and almost fell out of his chair.
No, I'm not saying it's a strong love because I don't believe that they have that yet, but he definitely loves her, which I doubted in the previous episode. Also, the intensity of his feelings is different than what I had presumed in the past. I guess I just didn't see it coming in episode 8, not that I don't like because this is what I want, but it could have been better is all I'm saying.

Lezah, I totally agree with you that he was experiencing something really overwhelming and strong. He watched her as she sobbed, not unlike his lovely ex in the first episode. However he is definitely more "invested" this time.
Some of the differences:
1. DH's family and WK all accepted him warmly. In the past he distanced himself from the family members
2. DH's life was at stake
3. DH had a terrible dad
4. DH was experiencing one sided love and now experiencing the same thing with him....
For some reason I think he felt really guilty and sorry towards her... and that formed stronger feelings for her than what he would have felt for others previously

This episode felt like a bit of a lull especially compared to the previous action-packed episode. The abduction situation changed and affected so many people. The bad guys became more aggressive. The good guys getting cornered. Seol Woo, Do Ha, and Woon Kwang reflecting on their past memories. I get that they needed some time. Glad they got back together in the end.
Excited for the next episode! I like that DH and WK are going to team up with SW in his missions now. More bromance please!

My tears during the last scene in episode 7 just spilled over to episode 8 and I was a mess up to the first 20 minutes of the show. It’s not just about Cha Doha but Kim Seol Woo as well. The play of emotions between the two overwhelms me. Since this drama started I had been a fan of PHJ’s restraint acting and the effective ways he uses his facial expressions to show varied emotions.
The hint of sadness and longing in his eyes breaks my heart while he was talking to Agent Lee and asking him to take care of DH for him.
The veiled sadness while acting okay when DH went to see him to sign the confidentiality agreement
The look of worry, just ever so slightly, when he saw DH’s cut on her wrist, which she covered hastily
The sad eyes following DH while she was walking out of his home/base.
What was very emotionally charged for me was when DH visited the next day and found that the place was emptied and there was no sign of SW. Gah I cried with DH! Then there was SW watching her every action on the cctv monitors and I just died looking at him with those tear-filled eyes. I don’t know how one would describe that but I could only see tears in his eyes and the look of agony. I even thought that he was about to caress her image on the screen but then he turned it off. It’s clear how much DH means to him.
I was so very proud of DH from the warehouse, to the hospital and then when he visited SW to sign the papers. She had been holding things up very bravely. I could see that after she signed her hands were almost shaking. What just happened was traumatic indeed but add up the fact the she just discovered the real identity and deception of SW, I dunno how our girl could have hold herself through all of that. Then when she went to him the next day to ask for an explanation, to hear from him the details and he left just like that, she cried, letting the tears fall down. Well, I love that when she went back she asked UG to buy her a gun and promised to shoot him when he sees him again. During that drinking session with SY she said she doesn’t want someone who disappears without a word. Go girl!

It was sad that he had to go without closure to DH, not even that but an explanation. It seemed cruel and selfish but in the greater context of things he had to do what he had to do. In my mind he had this going in his mind that never again should he complicate things involving civilians and to be specific people he cared for. During the course of his rescue mission, he had recalled the bad feeling and that he should have not been emotionally involved, that this would have major repercussions. What happened is a clear example why secret agents, for most of the times, have a family of their own. The enemy could have something to bargain with them or worst threaten them. Their judgement could be clouded when loved ones are involved. Case in point, SW resigning and going forward with saving DH, blowing his cover in the process and the endangering the mission as a whole. Apart from that, I guess, seeing DH after this break-up, I understood why SW always choose to go cleanly, that is to die because it’s hard leaving a heartbroken woman like DH right now.
In the ensuing mission, SW had become detached and had avoided any advances made by the female agent he had partnered for the Black Auction mission. I was pleased to see that after what happened with DH he had distanced himself from the lady agent who had flirted with him and asked him to stay. Either he was still thinking of DH or he had revisited his principles in the way do things or both. I would have loved both.
Let me just say that UK tops himself up in each episode. I am touched at how he was there as a reassuring presence for DH. He had become a father figure and a brother to DH. As episodes go by I see them more as siblings with deep bond that sometimes not even a blood bond can top. It is evident that UK is protective of DH and cares for her deeply. On a lighter note, I find it so funny how everyone keep insisting that he was hit by Kim Guard and he was all frustrated explaining that he did not. Lols! He always reminds me of Dok Go Jin!
I have a question with regards to UK… did he ask SW not to see DH before he leave when he knew SW was leaving anyway? I feel that he looked and sounded guilty when he asked DH what SW said to her and she answered none because he left already. The sound of his answer when DH asked him to buy a gun for her was so telling.
I am sad with the scene where UK said I love you to DH then she remembered all those times she looked into SW’s eyes and now all she could think of were the lies those eyes told her.

Hehe, had a great time reading your comment. Actually, I also wondered what was the "promise" WK was speaking of. Did WK ask SW to just leave quietly so that he wouldn't break DH's heart further? It seems like something a caring oppa would do.
I actually think SW wouldn't associate himself with the female agent because it's not in him to do things without a purpose (i.e., no mission/reward for being romantic with her).
ME annoys me, because I can't seem to figure out what exactly she wants, and all her little schemes to help WK in the first few episodes just resulted in a lot of trouble for everyone. And now she's just decided to wash her hands off the matter? I get that it's because her son was threatened, but I still can't find it in my heart to sympathize with her. At least for SJ/Baek, I know it's greed, power and money that's motivating them.

Woon-kwang asked Seol-woo what he would do about Do-ha once the mission was over, Seol-woo answered, "disappear". Woon-kwang took it as a consideration for Do-ha and thanked Seol-woo and asked him to keep his "promise" to disappear. Essentially he didn't make Seol-woo leave, but he was glad to hear that was his decision and hold him on that promise.

I don’t know where the trajectory of Agent Seo is going. It was clear that he was very angry when SJ abandoned him. As a revenge he revealed the remains of Agent Yoon to SW and Lee. I don’t think that he killed Agent Yoon, he just knew where the corpse is. It seemed to me that he is now out to get SJ but then I was again puzzled with what he negotiated in the when he called Baek, offering to give the carving and killing K. I don’t want him facing SW again, a mad dog is different done a suicidal dog.
I feel like I could get on with the drama not seeing SJ and Baek. SJ is a cruel tyrant fool who gets around doing things with his money. Baek is a manipulative SOB and he still reminds me of the same manipulated Prime Minister Kim for Moonlight. He’s a dirty negotiator and would do anything to get what he wants. I knew that they are needed to move the plot but other than that I could care less about them. Though I think Baek is more dirty since he even suggested for Seo to be “put in a pot and boiled” and that’s short of having him killed just the same way he have Yoon killed. I want these two men put in their proper places at the end of this drama.
ME, she baffles me. I was sure from the start that she was out for SJ’s blood but now I am not so sure what she is up to anymore. She even leaked the information to SJ about Jang and Sharon. She’s being cold and I don’t know what she’s out to do. On the other hand, can we just ship off to Timbuktu the good for nothing father of DH, ugh I want to throttle his head.
As the leads are getting more and more interesting, the villains are getting more and more pathetic. Tsk! No balance there but then I would always love to see my three leads and it seems our trajectory has finally set itself to what I had envisioned from the start, the three of them working as a team of spies, or rather a spy with his two tag-alongs and that would be full of hijinks.

I cried along with Doha at that display of tears at the emptied first floor :'( such heartpain. Eventhough it will not happen but how I wished that SW will run down to hug after he saw her on his monitor.
I am really enjoying this drama and didn't even realise we are halfway through till some of you mentioned that! and yet at this moment I don't even care if they actually solve the woodcarving mystery or whatever not with the ring. I am just enjoying the trio interactions very much. The only thing I don't get is on the why Mieun sold out her bff connection to NIS Mr Jang to her husband. I mean I am still trying to see that maybe it's for a gd ulterior motive of hers but kinda sucks for Sharon!

DH seemed to be more in pain than SW (he barely flinched!) when she punched his stomach. His abs must be rock-hard, hehe.
This is such a great episode, hitting me right in the feels. The scene where SW watched DH in the monitor is the most emotional scene yet in the drama, I cried together with DH. Both Kim Min-jung & Park Hae-jin are amazing indeed.
I'm really loving all the 3 main characters individually, as well as their relationships with each other (SW-DH's romance, SW-WK's bromance, WK-DH's siblings-like relationship) and I really can't wait to see the trio teaming up & working together in a mission! This is where their real relationships will start, without being under disguises and lies.

What I loved:
When he looks so cut up at the sight of the red weal on her wrist, and the plaster.
“The mission has been aborted, and I will leave,” he says matter-of factly, and the spare, stark simplicity of the statement makes me flinch even though I thought I had been prepared for this inevitable moment; DH’s face crumples, and I feel so sad for her, so sorry.
“Are you saying,” DH asks, her eyes filled with pain and hurt, “that everything has been a lie and a disguise?”
“I must lie often, and my days are filled with death and violence.” He answers, but it is not really an answer; he is speaking so gently, almost kindly, choosing his words with great care, but he’s so detached somehow - not cold- it’s like he’s removed himself from feeling anything and is in his own isolated vacuum, insulated from human emotion, and yet, why is my heart breaking at the loneliness of his words?
“You are the most dangerous person to me.” His first admission ever of his feelings for her, I am blown away by it.
“Wait a minute,” she interrupts, pretending nothing is wrong, “let’s talk tomorrow,” and at her words, he looks at her, and the still, calm, composed mask slips, just like that, he doesn’t say a word, but he keeps looking and looking at her, and the shuttered look is gone, replaced by a deep, deep, heavy, overwhelming sadness, and I start to cry.
When he turns and looks at her leave, like he can’t help himself, like he needs to remember and memorize every last detail of her for the last time, going out that door, because he’s never ever going to see her again, it’s so sad, I’m sobbing.
He glances down at the signature on the Confidentiality Agreement, and it’s like he’s telling himself, that’s all I have left of her from now on, just a signature on a piece of paper, a memory to be cherished. And he looks so lonely sitting there, so still, and it makes me cry harder.
When WK says, “Good thinking”, and looks so sad after DH tells him she’ll talk to Kim Guard the next day. He knows she won’t be seeing him anymore.
DH crying brokenly at the abandoned lot…”Did you really leave? If you lied, you should apologize to me. If you saved me, you should let me thank you.” This was such a heartbreaking scene.
SW swallowing hard as he looks at the monitor, struggling to control his emotions. I was shocked at the depth of his feelings for her here, I wasn’t expecting this at all.
SW to WK, in a rare moment of admission, “It was the first mission in which I made a mistake,” and he half-smiles in derision.
“I was very angry when I found out she was abducted.” His eyes go kind of bleak at the memory… I loved this part, it was a revelation, not only to us, of the depth of his feelings for her, but to himself as well.
“I just did my job…,” SW tells DH, and she punches him in the stomach. The conflict in his eyes as he looks searchingly at her, like he has missed her so so much, and the raw pain, etched in every muscle of that...

And I love the contrast of this farewell to the one in episode 4, Seol-woo is visibly shaken inside and much more gentle to Do-ha, he is still as honest to Do-ha, but his words ring with his true feelings. *cries

So now we will get to see more of Guard Kim in the next episode. I might be in the minority but more than Kim Guard moments with Woon-Kwang I like Do-ha + Guard Kim silly moments. The point where she pushed him to the floor coz she wanted him to hide. And the point where he swallowed his words to please her when they were discussing the casting of female lead. When the writer is showing us Kim Seol-Woo and Do-ha moments as a couple. I love that. I want more of that in the show in future episodes.
Regarding KSW's feelings. I felt heavy emotion in when he was carrying Do-ha on his back and sighed and continued, knowing this was the end of the road with Do-ha. The gentle way he tucked her in. But yes in every moment he shows restraint, like its who he is, he has learnt to disconnect himself when a mission is over and that is second-nature to him.
And the female agent introduced in this episode. I like how it is implied that he probably did have a casual sexual relationship with her. But after Do-ha things are not the same as before in spy world. So even though he will try to start things over but wont be able to fight his feelings, coz he sure has fallen for the first time:)

Yes, I love Do-ha and Kim Guard moments a lot too, especially the part where he maneuvered his words after seeing Do-ha's death glare. I also loved the scene where he carried her on his back and sighed, it felt like he was sad to say goodbye. Do-ha may not be a skilled fighter, but I think she has proven herself to be worthy of a partner for Seol-woo, she has good sense and wits, I'm hoping they will show how she works alongside Seol-woo and win him over completely.

One more thing I wanted to add. When KSW and Do-ha think back at the conversation they had before Doha signed the confidentiality agreement. This is my interpretation of what was suggested:
Do-ha thinks back at different moments between her & KSW and is wondering if everything was a disguise and a lie? But in all those moments shown I think she felt some sincerity through KSW's eyes and got to the conclusion it was not all fake. But she wasnt sure. Then her conversation with her Oppa WK, where he said that eyes can lie and anything can be conveyed through acting sorta made her think that maybe it was all a disguise and a lie.
Then when she meet KSW before the end of the episode she is quite angry if it all was a lie. She is at the point where she doesnt know and wants confirmation.
Going back to that scene where they both reflect on the conversation. Now in the second part we see it from KSW's angle. He remembers his words about telling her who he is (probably the reason why he cant be with her) which is "his days are full of death and violence". And then telling her "she is most dangerous to him". I think KSW knows Do-ha doesn't understand things subtly and didn't get what he implied. But what he meant was conveyed in the images he thinks of: when he laid eyes on her all dressed up for victors party; he found her so attractive and then all the intimate scenes with her. He was thinking about the feelings he has for her and he is well aware of his desires for her now. Thats what he meant by her being "dangerous" to him.

Is it Friday yet?! Yes, she is dangerous to him because she will turn his life upside down! She is bringing out emotions/change from him. He said he made a mistake, he got angry. Do-ha affected his judgment which was based on emotion, not ghost agent behavior at all. SW is changing and is probably afraid too, this is new territory for him so he is reluctant and needs to be careful, for himself. But the good thing is, everything is changing too with D-hyun and Mr Jang's situations now, so it will be a new chapter for them all. This is really a turning point, and loving the direction it's going!
While Do-ha wants him to apologize for lying, I want him to say "no, I'm not going to apologize because it wasn't a lie!" And then kiss of course for proof! Ah...is it Friday yet?!

I love where the show is going now. The three of them are going to form their own special unit, yay! Can't wait to see this.
I'm so glad I picked up this drama, seriously. I started watching it just last weekend and then marathoned it, that's how much I've come to like it. The main trio is just amazing, villains are delicious and the story is one crazy ride. I love it!
P.S. On the topic of Episode 8: the way Seol-woo's twitched when he noticed those cuts on Do-ha's wrists... I died. Ah, Park Hae-jin is so good at microexpressions.

I know there has been this debate on whether SW is either "loves" or "cares" about DH. Well, I am going to throw my hat in the ring and say that he is neither. Personally I think he has become attached to DH. It has become his nature to be aloof with people due to his occupation. But all of his experiences with DH has caused him to become attached to her emotionally. This explains why he got so angry with Dad, why he has a "bad feeling" about his interactions with her, why he goofed up and "got angry" when she was abducted.
DH has gotten to him with her street smarts, and while she isn't up to his caliber, the fact he has had a hard time fooling her and needed to work harder to win her over has gotten him emotionally involved. She was able to see him more clearly than anyone for who he really was right from the beginning, and while she was flattered by his flirting in the beginning...she didn't take any of his crap, and he admired it.
From that perspective, it makes sense that he loses it a bit when she gets taken. Not so much that he has come to love her, but he has developed a deep attachment towards her...which makes her dangerous, because developing attachments as a spy is a big no no.
I think SW will fall in love with DH now as some of his secrets are exposed and she comes to know him better.

What I really like about DH is her agency.
I love that she thinks critically.
I love that she didn't wait to be rescued. He noticed where the camera was, she picked the lock, she stole a cellphone and she called for help. I guess growing up with unreliable parents will make you into your own champion.

I love, love, loved this episode. Can I just say it, Kim Min Jung's Do-Ha is slowly making her way to favorite heroine in drama land very fast. I loved how calmly she tried to process all the information being thrown her way. She raged, cried, laid her heart bare to her friend but there was a bit of poignancy in all of that mixed with bit of hope. When Un Kwang told her I love you when they were watching Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender and discussing romance and how eyes don't lie, I was screaming at her that you are spot on, his eyes really didn't lie to you. Also, She didn't jump to conclusions and asked for an explanation. I loved that exchange with Seol Woo before signing the confidentiality agreement. It had very few words while their eyes, gestures spoke. Her concern, her disappointment, her heartbreak, his concern and conflict all laid bare. Seol Woo again dodged the real question, you are dangerous to me is not equal to it was all fake and lie. I think even he knew, he isn't fooling Do-Ha completely which is why when she left he was both relieved and sad at the same time. I think, Do-Ha maybe the only person who reads his eyes correctly and can see through his shell. Also, he isn't fooling anyone at this point. Un Kwang, all his question were about Do-Ha although he kept saying its about him. He was trying to read Seol Woo and I think the reason he still calls him a brother because he sees what we see. He can see his inner conflict when it comes to Do-Ha and like all of us viewers, he knows why it is probably best for him to leave her alone. I love the angst that we have here because its not mere noble idiocy, the reasons are valid and even Do-Ha knows it deep down. But now that are reluctant hero is forced to work with the civilian gang, I cannot wait to see how the trio work it out together, the mission and their feelings.

Very well put! I agree with you, WK was scanning SW when he asked all those questions and I think he was trying to gauge what SW was feeling. I think WK went there already with the thought that SW was definitely a "good guy" though, and I just feel so warm and happy that WK sees right through SW and understands that he's not necessarily a "bad person" because of the things he had to do for his missions.
And like @nonski I'm also so happy that more and more people are starting to love DH! I spent ages convincing some of my RL friends to pick up the show again because they dropped it after 2 episodes.

Thanks for the recap Chocolatte! It was good enough that I feel I'm not missing out on this show because I don't think I have the time or energy to watch it.
I love that our 3 main characters are coming together where it matters and so naturally, and that the show has given them enough relevant interactions and info leading up to this, so that we know that they can really trust each other and work together. Just seeing them beat the baddies will be such a reward (an ? ice-cream treat) for watching this show... and if on top of that we also get to know more of the rationale for Ki Chul's actions and if Mi Eun and son get a happier ending... those will be the ? cherries on the top! ?

I ,for one, have this theory:
*Yes, Mi Eun at one point dated Woon Kwang and it seems that they were one happy couple... Even though WK wasn't famous at the time, while ME is - she was miss Korea, right?
*then there is this chaebol Seung Jae who have huge crush over Mi Eun. Bordering obsession.
*in the mean time, Director Jang and his boss (forgot his name, he played Ji Won's general dad in DOTS), have been trying to build a case surrounding SongSan and its cronies/bureaucrats tentacles but have no other way to get evidence.
*that was until They learnt about Seung Jae's crush obsession towards Mi Eun.
*here onward I still can't decide whether: a) Seung Jae orchestrated Woon kwang's accident, Or b) Director Jang orchestrated it. But either way, the result of the accident brought Mi Eun to Seung Jae.
* these must be a big collateral involved that made Mi Eun agreed to Dir.Jang's scheme... but what? ... I have this sinking feeling of a birth secret makjang.
* after that, Woon kwang was left devastated over their break up... But Mi Eun didn't exactly leave him entirely. She helped him through Sharon, CEO Ji etc to build his stardom.
* Until one day Seung Jae found out that Mi Run is still attached to Woon kwang.. By now the pressure is getting to Mi Eun, that made her giving up (her meeting Dir.Jang) whatever agreement she had with him and even said she would side up to her husband the next time he got probed again.
* now that they've lost Mi Eun, Dir Jang and his Boss (misnister Im?) has to make sure Seol Woo secret mission a success, to be able to catch Congressman Baek, Seung Jae and the whole tentacles.
So there, my theory, what do you think?

I'm thinking Seung-jae loved Mi-eun and tried to kill off Woon-kwang out of jealousy, and Mi-eun married Seung-jae out of ambitious greed. When she felt guilty, she tried to help Woon-kwang back to his feet through CEO Ji, but then Jang Tae-ho approached her because they had something on Songsan Group and needed an informant, it worked for Mi-eun because it could help her to escape a bad marriage if her husband is found guilty and put behind bars.

Hmm... I am still not sure about ME. Why did she marry SJ?! I had thought before that maybe her child is WK's, but now I'm wondering if her child could be SJ's? What if he forced himself on her and she got pregnant? That would explain why she married him and broke up with WK. SJ is using their son to punish her, maybe their son was conceived in order to get her, I could see SJ doing/planning something like that. So now he has the child to use against her.
I am kind of confused about the wood carvings too, how long has the NIS been on that mission? Agent K was only called upon because Agent Yoon went missing so I guess they could have been working on it for a while or was it recent? So not sure how long ME has been involved with NIS. Was it just recently to help bring agent K into WK's circle, since she is friends with Sharon, maybe that is how Dir Jang approached her and this is the only deal they had? But what is in it for her? She seems to want to expose SJ, help NIS but at the same time will stand by SJ because of her son?! Does she have a plan of her own? Why did she tell SJ about Sharon so he can use that against Dir Jang? Was she involved with NIS since her marriage which is why Dir Jang said she chose the wrong man, he knew her back then, was she an agent of some sort?
Did SJ just marry her for his image as mentioned in first episode or does he truly love her? I used to think poor ME but now I'm wondering if she is not at fault too. She is intentionally putting both Sharon, her friend, and Dir Jang in danger. What does that make her?! Maybe she does have an agenda of her own.

i think cha do ha is one of the realistic heroine in K drama land LOL
after so much drama, she can back to her seat and move on with no si much tear jerking, Kim Min Jung give her best when olay Do Ha character, she show a strong woman with her own way
and also i'm really surprise with the plot, i thought no one realise Seol Woo identity until ep 12-13 ahhahahaha never imagine he will make a tag team with Do Haa too, i really wait the story progress, i bet start from this week man to man will become comedy action drama LOL

As other "beaners" have already commented on the great job of PHJ and KMJ as Do-Ha and the awesomeness of Woon-kwang being a level-headed and actually useful brother for Do-Ha, I'm only going to ask you for help:
Could someone explain to me the whole wood carvings plot? Why are they so actually important and why are the NIS and Songsan after them? I didn't understand it on the first episodes and now I feel a bit lost.

Agent Yoon was investigating the slush funds connected to Songsan. Before he disappeared, he hide clues to the slush funds in the 3 wood carvings and left a text message for NIS to find the wood carvings to get leads to the slush funds.
