Man to Man: Episode 6

Our secret agent better watch out, because it seems that even his super spy defenses are no match for our heroine’s lovable, but sometimes cringe-inducting antics. All things considered, it says a lot about Do-ha that she’s able to fully throw herself into this new relationship, but I think it says even more that she seems to be able to chip away at Seol-woo’s walls without him even noticing.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

After happily embracing Seol-woo and calling him “son-in-law,” Do-ha’s father, Myung-suk, suggests that they go out to dinner. As they eat, Seol-woo makes a few notes about Myung-suk, narrating that he’s “a con artist who survives on connections and bluffing. To his family, he’s a complete nuisance.”

Outwardly, Seol-woo continues to play the part of the perfect boyfriend, even calling Myung-suk “father.” It’s not long before Myung-suk asks Do-ha about the “item” he gave her, but Do-ha continues to insist that she threw it away.

Seung-jae receives confirmation from one of his men that Myung-suk has the Black Auction ring, so he gives the orders to contact Ki-chul. Just outside Seung-jae’s door, Mi-eun lingers, eavesdropping on the conversation.

Back home, Seol-woo’s struggling from all the alcohol consumed at dinner. However, he sobers up quickly when Dong-hyun identifies the sniper they’re after as a fellow ghost agent who’s gone rogue.

As Dong-hyun talks, Seol-woo gets a text from Do-ha. The two exchange cutesy messages back and forth, and Do-ha can’t contain her giggles when Seol-woo declares that it’s the first day of their new relationship. She texts back a sweet goodnight, which elicits a smile from Seol-woo—and Dong-hyun busts him immediately for it, hee. His smile fading, Seol-woo tells his colleague that he’s partaking in a “strategic good night,” since Do-ha’s now fallen for him.

Do-ha squeals when the clock hits midnight, excited that it’s officially Day 2 of her new relationship. Song-yi wonders if this means Do-ha’s now over Woon-kwang, but Do-ha says her feelings for her oppa are different than those she has for Seol-woo. Do-ha then thanks Song-yi for letting her dad crash at their place and tells her to let her know immediately if Myung-suk tries to ask for money.

Ki-chul tells Seung-jae about his plans for securing the wooden carving and the ring. Seung-jae cares more about the results than the details of Ki-chul’s plan, but he does give Ki-chul one specific mandate: to take back control of the Baek Infantry from Assemblyman Baek.

Department Head Jang receives an unwanted visitor at lunch when Assemblyman Baek plops down at his table. The assemblyman confirms the identity of the sought-after sniper as Seo Ki-chul, then offers Department Head Jang a deal: He’ll hand over Ki-chul’s file, but only if he gets what he needs.

Do-ha arrives at her office building all dressed up and with a spring in her step. She’s surprised to see Seol-woo waiting for her outside, and the two engage in some flirty banter before they head in. In between her bashful smiles, Do-ha remembers to ask Seol-woo to keep their relationship a secret for now. She tells him to pretend he’s an undercover spy in a James Bond movie, asking him to act “secretly and covertly.” At this, he smiles and asks her if it’s okay to do this really well.

In the office, Do-ha’s colleagues gape over Do-ha’s outfit before immediately assuming that she must be seeing someone. Woon-kwang suspiciously gives Do-ha a once-over, then ventures a guess as to who that man might be: him. Pfft. But then he quickly pivots and asks Do-ha if the man in her life is Guard Kim.

That happens to be when Seol-woo enters the office, so Woon-kwang pulls Do-ha close and asks Seol-woo what he thinks of Do-ha today. Playing the role of “undercover spy” perfectly, Seol-woo coolly responds that she’s not his style. He even goes as far as to criticize her clothes and haircut, calling it tacky.

Looking hurt, Do-ha laughs weakly and repeats his words that she’s not his type. Her face falls further as she fingers her hair, and she mutters about getting up at the crack of dawn to primp. Meanwhile, Seol-woo smiles in satisfaction.

Ki-chul inspects his whiteboard and wonders about the identity of the ghost agent after the wooden carvings. One of his men confirms that the agent is known as K, but says they have no other information on him. Ki-chul then moves on to Myung-suk’s whereabouts and learns that he’s staying with his daughter.

At said daughter’s place, Myung-suk snoops around in Do-ha’s room for the ring, but comes up empty-handed.

Back at the office, Do-ha and Seol-woo meet up to chat, but Do-ha’s in a sullen mood because of Seol-woo’s words from earlier. Seol-woo tells her that he only said those things to hide their relationship from the others, and to make it up to her, he offers to take her and Myung-suk out to dinner that night.

When Do-ha says she’s busy—with plans to tell Woon-kwang about the two of them—it’s Seol-woo’s turn to get sulky. He huffily says he’ll just go out to dinner with her dad instead, but Do-ha says that her dad might be busy too, since he just started his new job as a waiter at Song-yi’s restaurant.

Later, Do-ha arrives at Woon-kwang’s house with a surefire way to get him in a good mood: fried chicken and beer. When she starts to butter him up with a flurry of compliments on top of that, Woon-kwang immediately guesses that she must have something to tell him.

Nervously, Do-ha brings up Guard Kim, but she doesn’t have to say any more than that. Woon-kwang jumps in to tell her that Seol-woo seems to like her, and he wishes them the best. So sweet.

Woon-kwang does add that Do-ha should take things slow with Seol-woo, especially when it comes their physical relationship, and he advises her to wait a year or more before kissing him. Haha, Do-ha looks guilty as sin, and Woon-kwang slumps down in despair when he realizes that kisses have already happened—and that it was initiated by Do-ha, no less.

After getting over his shock, Woon-kwang sighs that Do-ha might get married soon. He tells her that when the time comes, he’ll make sure she gets the best wedding possible, and that she shouldn’t worry about anything, since he’s got Guard Kim under control. Do-ha’s eyes well up at Woon-kwang’s touching words, and the two toast to Do-ha’s happiness.

The next morning, CEO Ji announces that Woon-kwang’s ex, Eun-soo, is up for the lead part in Woon-kwang’s upcoming romance film. Woon-kwang scoffs at the idea before asking Seol-woo for his opinion. Seol-woo starts to speak up in favor of Eun-soo, but backs down quickly with just one sharp look from Do-ha. Nevertheless, Woon-kwang says he’ll at least meet with the actress.

Do-ha grabs Seol-woo for a private conversation in the guest room, where she snipes at Seol-woo’s willingness to give Eun-soo a chance. When Seol-woo asks if she’s jealous, she tries to get all cute, but she stops as soon as Seol-woo responds by switching to a formal tone with her.

But Seol-woo’s change in tone seems to have more to do with his spy sensibilities, because a few beats later, they hear Woon-kwang’s makeup artist SON JUNG-HYE calling out Do-ha’s name. Do-ha panics and orders Seol-woo to hide; when he refuses, she shoves him toward the back of the room. A well-timed push causes Seol-woo to lose his balance, and he lands flat on his back just between the bed and the wall.

Just as Jung-hye opens the door, Do-ha awkwardly sits on the corner of the bed, stretching her legs to hide Seol-woo’s feet, which are sticking out behind the bed. Do-ha then tries to pass off the buzzing of Seol-woo’s phone as her own, and even though she can’t lie to save her life, Jung-hye seems to buy it… until she turns back around, and asks what Seol-woo’s been doing behind the bed this whole time. Womp womp.

Do-ha pretends (unconvincingly) that she didn’t know Seol-woo was there, while Seol-woo puts on his best smile for Jung-hye and tells her that he was looking for a dropped coin.

When Do-ha and Seol-woo are alone again, she ribs him for his terrible hiding skills, then asks about his buzzing phone. Seol-woo checks his messages to find a note from Myung-suk asking him to meet—and requesting that he keep it a secret from his daughter.

Myung-suk’s reason for calling Seol-woo out is pretty predictable: He wants to know if Do-ha’s given Seol-woo the ring he’s so desperately searching for. But Seol-woo doesn’t have good news for him, as he simply says that he and Do-ha haven’t gotten to the point of exchanging rings just yet.

Just then, Song-yi calls Myung-suk with the shocking news that their place was robbed. Myung-suk and Seol-woo head to Do-ha’s together, and as they approach the house, Seol-woo notes a black van parked nearby.

Inside, Seol-woo asks Song-yi if she noticed anyone suspicious on her way in, but she says she’s not sure. When Do-ha arrives a few moments later, the first thing Myung-suk asks her to do is check on the ring. Do-ha shrugs him off in annoyance, but then she admits that the ring’s being kept somewhere else, much to Myung-suk’s relief.

Seol-woo double checks with Do-ha and Song-yi that nothing’s actually missing from the house, and Do-ha says that she doesn’t have anything worth stealing. At that, Seol-woo remembers the black van and runs outside, just in time to see the vehicle peeling away.

The next thing we know, Seol-woo’s packed a bag, and he tells Dong-hyun that he’s planning on guarding Do-ha twenty-four hours a day. Unable to believe what he’s hearing, Dong-hyun accuses Seol-woo of going too far and putting his undercover identity in jeopardy. Seol-woo says that they need to speed up the mission and asks him to tell Department Head Jang to move on to the next step.

Seol-woo shows up at Do-ha’s and tells her crew that he’ll stay with them until the thief is caught. Do-ha and Song-yi react to the news with appreciation, but Myung-suk’s a different story, given that he’s already staked a claim on their couch. As a compromise, Song-yi suggests that they all sleep in the bedroom, with Myung-suk and Seol-woo on one side, and Do-ha and herself on the other.

That night, Do-ha and Seol-woo are both on the floor, separated by a mere bookcase. Understandably, Do-ha’s wide awake, and after stealing a few glances at Seol-woo’s back, she whispers his name. When he turns to face her, she asks him if he’s comfortable, then tells him, “Thank you.” The two lie awake for a bit, looking into each other’s eyes, and it’s Do-ha who falls asleep first, while Seol-woo watches.

Elsewhere, Department Head Jang tells Dong-hyun about Assemblyman Baek’s recent attempt to make a deal, but says that he doesn’t like the terms that Baek offered. When it’s Dong-hyun’s turn to provide an update on the ring, he enlists Department Head Jang for help, saying that he needs to make Myung-suk “work harder.”

Cut to: Department Head Jang posing as the CEO of “Gallery Sharon” while asking Myung-suk to sell him the Black Auction ring. Department Head Jang mentions Agent Yoon and the name “Goldfinger,” but Myung-suk plays dumb, claiming not to have any idea what he’s talking about.

But of course he does, as we see a flashback showing how Myung-suk came to be in possession of the ring. He’d walked into an office (maybe Agent Yoon’s?) in a gallery, and was shocked to find it ransacked. He quickly made a beeline for a piece of furniture and dug up an old book from underneath—and when he opened it up, he found the ring safely hidden inside.

Back in the present, Department Head Jang offers to pay “two big ones” for the ring—that is, two hundred million won—which gets Myung-suk’s attention. But he plays it cool and tells Department Head Jang that he’ll think about it.

Seol-woo drives Do-ha to work, which gets Do-ha all fluttery with excitement. But Seol-woo insists that he’s on duty and keeps up a cold exterior, even flicking away her hand when she tries to put it on his. Do-ha just sighs that his aloofness makes Seol-woo even sexier, while Seol-woo shrinks away from her.

Eun-soo reads lines with Woon-kwang at the offices of Chewing and ends up impressing everyone, including the big star himself, with her performance. Woon-kwang confirms to CEO Ji that casting for the movie is finalized before telling him to share the news publicly.

Meanwhile, Do-ha, with Seol-woo in tow, stops by a store to check out a windbreaker that Woon-kwang’s supposed to model. When the saleswoman mistakes Seol-woo for an actor, Do-ha quickly clarifies his bodyguard status. Seol-woo adds that Do-ha’s the VIP he’s protecting, which brings a big smile to Do-ha’s face.

Back at Chewing, Woon-kwang compliments Eun-soo on how much she’s improved as an actress, and she reassures him that she’ll focus hard on this new project. Woon-kwang then tries to take credit for Eun-soo’s growth as an actress and tells a bewildered Eun-soo to use the heartbreak he caused to make their movie a success.

That night, over dinner, Do-ha asks Seol-woo about his family, commenting that she doesn’t know anything about him. He skillfully deflects the question and turns the conversation back to Do-ha as he asks her about the item that Myung-suk is looking for. Do-ha explains that it’s a ring, but says that she’s not really hiding it—she thinks that if her dad had really changed, he would have found it by now. She promises to take Seol-woo to “that place” soon.

As they continue their meal, Seol-woo’s eyes focus on two suspicious men in the corner of the pojangmacha. With those men in mind, Seol-woo takes Do-ha back home using a different route, which Seol-woo tries to play off as a way to spend more time with Do-ha.

But then he grabs her hand and starts to run, and we see that the two guys from the pojangmacha are on their tail. Seol-woo whirls Do-ha around and hides her from view behind a brick wall, leaning in close. This of course gets Do-ha all flustered, and when she asks him what he’s doing, he responds, “Dating.” Good answer.

While she’s melting at Seol-woo’s words, the bad guys run past the couple. Do-ha looks up at Seol-woo and muses at how strange he is—how he’s unpredictable and impulsive, soft but rough, and how he has a way to pulling people in. Seol-woo sweeps his hand behind Do-ha’s neck, then pulls out a coin, asking if this is the kind of thing she’s talking about.

He tells her the coin was his lucky charm in Russia, then gives it to her, telling her to keep it on her at all times. Remarking that his skills aren’t very good, Do-ha does a magic trick of her own, making the coin disappear and then reappear, which brings a slight smile to Seol-woo’s face.

Ki-chul studies his whiteboard and focuses on “Woon-kwang’s bodyguard,” noting Seol-woo’s presence at Woon-kwang’s accident and Chairman Victor’s party. His underling tells him that there’s nothing suspicious in Seol-woo’s records, but he mentions that he’s been staying with Do-ha since the day they raided her house.

Do-ha stirs awake in the middle of the night and finds Seol-woo in the living room, sleeping upright on the couch. She gazes at him lovingly, then asks out loud why he’s sleeping like this. Seol-woo, who’s totally not asleep, thinks to himself: “Because I need to protect you.” She decides to let him sleep a bit longer and settles next to him on the couch, then lays her head on his shoulder. At this, Seol-woo opens his eyes, but he doesn’t move.

A little while later, Myung-suk wakes up and sees Do-ha and Seol-woo in that same position, both asleep. He says to himself that Do-ha found herself a good guy and sighs that he should buy her a nice place if she were to get married.

The next morning, Myung-suk pays a visit to Songsan to offer Seung-jae the Black Auction ring, and nervously asks for two billion won in return. Seung-jae agrees to the sum, even offering Myung-suk a pricey watch as a “deposit.” But then, he threatens to cut off Myung-suk’s wrist if he dares to give the ring to anyone else.

Seol-woo, Do-ha, Myung-suk, and Woon-kwang enjoy a nice dinner together, but Myung-suk ruins the jovial mood when he tries to get Woon-kwang involved in a so-called investment opportunity. Looking mortified, Do-ha warns her dad to stop; when he doesn’t, she blows up at him and drags him outside.

Do-ha rips into Myung-suk for trying to con Woon-kwang, of all people. Myung-suk swears that this time, the investment is for real—he has money coming in, and he asks her for the ring to prove it. Do-ha tells him that he’s selfish, thinking only of himself but never about her, and yells that he doesn’t care if she lives or dies. She cries that he’s always left her behind—just like he did at her grandfather’s wake.

We flashback to that day, when Do-ha was attacked by an angry mob of people who were victims of Myung-suk’s scams. As she was knocked down to the floor by the crowd demanding their money, she spied Myung-suk just a few feet from her, hiding behind a counter. She could only watch in disbelief as he put a finger to his lips and tiptoed away, leaving her to deal with his mess.

In the present, Do-ha tearfully tells Myung-suk that she couldn’t even call out to him that day because she was afraid that he would ignore her—and that would mean that he really had thrown her away. Unable to deal with Do-ha’s anger, Myung-suk fumbles with his phone and tells her that he needs to go. Do-ha calls him a coward and tells him to get out of her life.

Myung-suk turns to leave and runs straight into Seol-woo. When Seol-woo asks if he’s turning his back on Do-ha again, Myung-suk stammers that he’ll be in touch before taking off. Seol-woo looks like he might go after him, but Woon-kwang stops him and tells him to take care of Do-ha instead.

Woon-kwang deals with Myung-suk himself, inviting him over to his place for drinks. After shooting the breeze for a few minutes, Woon-kwang turns serious and asks Myung-suk to stop breaking Do-ha’s heart and to leave her alone so that she can live her life.

Myung-suk drunkenly says that’s his plan, once he gets the item he needs from her. Tapping his watch from Songsan, he says he plans to start his life with his new “deposit.”

And almost immediately, Ki-chul notifies Seung-jae that Do-ha is in possession of the ring. Seung-jae reiterates to Ki-chul that he’s not to make any mistakes.

Back at a pojangmacha, Do-ha drowns her sorrows in soju as she tells Seol-woo that her dad has a history of appearing only when he needs something from her—like the ring. Looking almost sympathetic, Seol-woo tells Do-ha that it’s okay for her to decide to never see her father again, but only if she’s sure she won’t regret it. Otherwise, he says, she should be good to Myung-suk.

Do-ha pauses, then tells Seol-woo that the ring is with her deceased grandfather. She says that if her father had truly changed, he would have gone to see her grandfather and found the ring easily. She goes on to bitterly say that Myung-suk will probably never find it.

Upon hearing those words, Seol-woo looks at Do-ha, then narrates: “I found the ring.”

Later, Seol-woo carries a passed-out Do-ha home and tucks her into bed. Before turning off the lights, he gazes at her for a moment, then thinks to himself, “Now, I’m going to leave you.”

His next stop is Grandpa Cha’s columbarium, where the ring is displayed in plain sight. He calls Dong-hyun to tell him that he found the ring and instructs him to close things out.

The next day, Myung-suk shows off his watch to Seol-woo over a meal, bragging that the head of Songsan offered it to him as a deposit. At the mention of Songsan, Seol-woo zeroes in on the watch, then asks to see it. He uses his phone to check the watch for transmitters, and sure enough, it’s bugged.

Seol-woo tosses the watch into a cup of water, cutting off the audio feed to Ki-chul’s team. As Myung-suk freaks out over his ruined watch, Seol-woo thinks back to Myung-suk asking Do-ha for the ring the night before. Realizing that Songsan must now be targeting Do-ha, he leaves the restaurant in a hurry.

When Seol-woo calls Do-ha from his car, she’s at her grandfather’s columbarium, where she’s surprised to see that the ring is gone. Seol-woo tells Do-ha to listen carefully, then asks if she sees any suspicious people nearby. Do-ha identifies four men dressed in black suits, so Seol-woo tells her to make her way to a nearby restroom and hide there until he gets to her.

Seol-woo tells Do-ha not to ask any questions and to do exactly what he says. Repeating her words from earlier back to her, he tells her to act like a spy in a James Bond movie, “secretly and covertly.” He asks if she has the lucky charm he gave her; when she says she does, he tells her to keep it on her, no matter what—that way, he can find her. Next, he calmly tells Do-ha: “You will soon be kidnapped.”

Do-ha has no time to react, as almost immediately afterward, one of the men following her grabs her and covers her mouth. Thankfully, she’s at least able to shove Seol-woo’s lucky charm into her jacket pocket before she gets dragged away.

One of Ki-chul’s underlings calls Ki-chul when he’s unable to find the ring in the columbarium. Referring to Do-ha as “the ring,” Ki-chul instructs his men to bring in Do-ha instead. He then turns his attention to his whiteboard, where he moves the picture of Seol-woo from underneath the word “bodyguard” to where “ghost agent” is written.

Seol-woo calls Dong-hyun to tell him about Do-ha’s kidnapping, then asks him to turn on the GPS tracker and link it to his phone. Dong-hyun complies, but warns Seol-woo not to get involved in the situation, telling him to turn it over to the police. Seol-woo says that won’t work, given that they’re up against a former ghost agent. Dong-hyun angrily responds that Seol-woo can’t risk being exposed, since that would blow up their mission to find the wood carvings.

Just then, the GPS tracker pops up on Seol-woo’s phone, with Do-ha’s location blinking in red. Seol-woo immediately turns the car around to go after poor Do-ha, who’s now bound and unconscious in the back of a speeding black van.

Dong-hyun tells Seol-woo again to stay out of it, but Seol-woo refuses. “This is my plan,” he says.

COMMENTS

Dong-hyun’s right, even if he doesn’t know it yet—our villains now know who Seol-woo is, and the mission to recover the wooden carvings is probably at risk. That said, I don’t care so much about the fate of Seol-woo’s mission as I do about the reasons behind Seol-woo’s recent recklessness. We’ve seen in previous episodes that Seol-woo has a history of ignoring Dong-hyun and doing what he wants, but up until this episode, it was always done in the name of completing his mission. This time around, he “crossed the line” twice when he didn’t really have to—upping the risk of unveiling his identity—first to move in with Do-ha, and then to go after her kidnappers. So how much of his actions are in line with what he’s always done, and how much is it out of character for him? I’m betting that more of it is out of character than not.

Nevertheless, I’m still conflicted about Do-ha falling so hard for Seol-woo so quickly. While I believe that feelings are burgeoning on his end whether he knows it or not, he is, at the end of the day, still putting on an act. I do find it interesting that whenever Do-ha talks about her jerk of a father, there’s something different in the way Seol-woo looks at her—like he almost empathizes with her. Could he be speaking from experience when he offers Do-ha advice on dealing with crappy fathers? I’m looking forward to finding out what that’s all about, though for that to happen, Seol-woo has to start giving us some nuggets of information about his background—and that’s not something he’s giving up so easily.

This was also a great episode for Do-ha—though I had initially found it hard to connect to her, I’m starting to really like her, and that of course makes it easier to root for her. More than anything, I like that she’s a well-rounded character; she’s self-aware enough to be embarrassed when an attempt at aegyo falls flat, but she’s willing to be vulnerable enough with her heart to still go all in on Seol-woo. One of my favorite moments this hour was when she pulled the magic trick on Seol-woo. It was lovely to see the genuine (?) reaction she was able to get from Seol-woo, and it showed that she’s able to turn the tables on him on bit and be a worthy match for our ghost agent.

The focus on Do-ha’s relationship with her father was also a nice way to showcase why Do-ha’s relationship with Woon-kwang has been and continues to be so important to her. After being abandoned so many times—including that critical moment after her grandfather’s death—it must have been a lifeline for Do-ha to find someone like Woon-kwang to hold onto, even if it was as a superfan of the celebrity in the beginning.

It’s clear that Woon-kwang and Do-ha are now family, and I was touched by all the ways he showed her that he was a true oppa to her in this episode. I find it hilarious that Woon-kwang appears everywhere via his posters, often looking like someone who has the potential to get in between our main couple (see screencap below), but that he’s actually the opposite of that, often playing cupid. And there’s nothing better than when Woon-kwang’s trying to get our couple together—except for when he’s freaking out about them actually being together, of course.

Thank you for the recap chocolatte!

So from where do I start? Let me start with I'M SO CONFUSED!! I don't know what Seol-woo feels for Do-ha, I keep going back and forth with he's falling for her and he's not! Yesterday I was saying he's falling for her but today when I re-watched this episode I'm not so sure anymore! He's definitely affected by her, he finds her cute and looks at her like she amuses him with her ways of doing things, he cares about her but I don't think he's falling for her yet, I don't know if he is *CRIES*

When he was texting her, he was smiling and the minute he caught himself, the smile was gone! And when he was "acting" he said she wasn't his type and listed all the reasons why, I couldn't help wondering if he really meant all of that, if it all was just an act, it felt like that was the truth? But then when she wasn't looking he smiled, what does that mean?! Also, why would he move in with her, he said it's to protect her (which, aww) but did he mean it like he wants to do it because he cares about her or because she's important to his mission and he doesn't want anything to happen to her that might hinder his task?

And the last scene when he said it was his plan, what is his plan? He knew she was being followed and that's why he gave her the coin so he could track her down later (I loved the coin scene, the way he was looking at her *flutters*) but did he know she was going to get abducted? When he took her home and tucked her in and said he was going to leave her, he lingered a bit, at first I thought there was something sad in his expeession but when I re-watched it, nope, no sadness at all, but he was definitely thinking of something! His curiosity was piqued when Dong-hyun mentioned the rogue ghost agent, so did he plan this to get to him? But when he called her to tell her she was about to get abducted, and calmly instructed her on what to do and reassured her that he will find her, that was so touching, I cried!! What does he have in that mind of his?!

Okay, enough with Seol-woo!

How funny was it to see Do-ha all dolled up and still expect everyone to believe that she wasn't dating? Her face when Seol-woo told her he wanted to see her sooner because she's pretty, aww! And his face when she asked him to pretend he's an undercover spy, LOL! And having Woon-kwang's poster there in the middle while all of this was happening was just so hilarious! I found it cute that she asked him to act well but yet she got hurt when he did so! That room scene got me laughing so hard, especially when Woon-kwang's stylist(?) knew he was there the whole time, and when Do-ha kicked him, he kicked her back, Haha! I also found the car scene very funny, when Do-ha touched his hand he pulled it hard and then moved a bit away to the window, like he was afraid for himself of her, Haha! I was so touched by Woon-kwang when he told her to be happy and not worry about anything, I actually teared up at...

I loved how he kicked her back, with those squeaky sound effects. The BGM director deserves a bonus.

I think his "plan" was that he knew she would get kidnapped sooner or later, since he gave her the coin to make sure he could track her when she did? Maybe he planned to use her kidnap as a way to get the other ghost once and for all? But the thing is, he was so shocked by Dad's watch/listening device. Maybe he didn't expect the kidnap to happen so quickly, but the fact that Dad had a listening device planted on him meant that the kidnap would probably be happening "right now".

The problem for me is... I keep feeling like he's genuine in so many scenes. T_T I'm gonna get my heart broken like Doha, aren't I?

I knew it when he gave her a coin that it was a tracking device... But I thought it was to monitor her so as to get the location of the ring.... But the kidnapping turned many tables around.....

Completely agree with you! His plan was definitely to get the rogue through her, but he wasn't expecting it to happen so fast, and I also think he wasn't expecting Do-ha's father to go to someone else to offer the ring...I mean, he tried to block that option through head Jang's offer, right?
Like you, lezah, I also feel he's being genuine sometimes, but I honestly think he's just amused by her because she does and says unexpected things...I reall don't think he cares about Do-ha in the way we want him to care! And knowing about Do-ha's issues with abandonment and whatnot, I think I'm right there next to you waiting in line for my heart to get broken!

As of now, I don't really think that he used DH to get to the rogue agent. In the first place, K did not factor Agent Seo when he started this mission. He knew she's in danger with the ghost agent in action on this mission so he's taken precautions for her. Although we wouldn't know that for sure until Friday.

Yes, I feel the same. Seol-woo probably lured out rogue secret agent at first to get rid of obstacle, but after he had gotten the ring, there was no point for him to go after rogue secret agent since he accomplished his mission.

Yes, I don't think he was expecting it to happen this soon since they didn't know who exactly had the ring. It's when they gave her father the bugged watch, they knew it was with her! Seol-woo knew she was in danger when he saw them following her and that's why he gave her the coin!

I can't really be sure! I can't understand the looks he gives her, I loved it when she fell asleep and he just kept looking at her! But when she was drunk and he took her home, I couldn't read his expressions!

I was so touched by Woon-kwang when he told her to be happy and not worry about anything, I actually teared up at this scene! But I was surprised at how everyone was thinking of marriage already, they've only been dating for a couple of days!

I hate Do-ha's father so much! How could he be so selfish? Instead of asking her how's she been, the first thing he asks is about the ring! How hurt and embarrassed Do-ha must've felt when he was trying to get an investment out of Woon-kwang, just UGH!!

I am as conflicted as you are about what he feels about her. The part where he stared at her before he turned off the light, and then lingered in the darkness, staring down at her...I was trying to see whether there was anything there, any tenderness, but nope, didn't see a thing. He didn't even smooth back her hair! *cries* I was waiting for him to do that. The leading men ALWAYS do that. But he didn't. His face was impassive, but the words in voiceover were sad: "I'll be leaving you now." Is that why he didn't want to touch her? So that it would make it easier to leave? Or is he feeling bad that he's leaving her sleeping happily, to wake up the next day, devastated at his abandonment of her? I think he was planning to leave the next day, after the breakfast with her father. I'm not sure why they were having breakfast together, or whose idea it was, but I thought he wanted to talk to her father, maybe say something about DH...? No clue.

Hah, yes, leading men ALWAYS smooth back the hair!

I think there was some regret in that moment. I don't think he wanted to touch her because he didn't feel like he had the right to do so. Especially not when DH had just been upset over the fact that Dad was only around to get the ring, and SW is in essence committing the exact same "crime" as Dad.

Perhaps he didn't want to leave her, but thinking "I'll be leaving you now" was meant to solidify that fact and remind himself that he HAD to leave.

Or maybe we're just coming up with crazy scenarios to make SW a better guy, hah!

I think Seol-Woo didn't touch her partly also because he doesn't seem to be a very touchy-feely person in general. I think regardless of how he feels inside, his actions are carefully calibrated in order to maintain his goals and identity as a ghost agent, by it by habit or choice.

Aw, Azzo, don't think too hard and hurt your brain! I'm pretty sure Seol-woo's definitely starting to feel SOMETHING in his heart about Do-ha. He's been doing a lot of things for Do-ha that's unnecessary and out of character. At first, he made it seemed like he was just protecting his target, aka Do-ha, but I think deep down, he's doing it all because he DOES care for her and her well being. I don't think he's feeling any romantic feelings for her (not yet), but he is starting to notice and care for her.

And I totally cried when Seol-woo was giving Do-ha the walk-through on the phone and telling her to pretend to be a spy and asking her if she can do that for him. It was so sweet and touching, like you said. The soft way he spoke to her and guided her made me tear up.

I was a little amused as well as miffed because he was acting like she's a virus. But then the ending scene happened and I see a gentleness in Seol-woo and it just broke my heart to see.

I didn't think too much of the coin and knew it was a tracking device. I simply thought he was going to use it to track her whereabout, both to protect her while she has the ring and to see if it could lead to the ring.

I agree with Azzo, all,
He is unreadable at this moment. But one thing for sure, he is a good man. From the moment he defied orders to save the little girl and all the children on the bus, he is my MAN forever.

Yes he is cold when it comes to wooing and leaving women, but he will never allow any harm to come to them. I think his gesture by the bedside contains a tinge of regret that he has to get close to DH to find the ring. And in a way, he is saying goodbye this time, quietly, rather than hurting her again with mean words.

Loving this drama for the strong acting performances and how the writer is consistently spooling out the internal lives of each character through their actions. In fact, despite a questionable starting point, the deliberate development of the characters through the episodes has been outstanding.

This consistency drives a deeper emotional response and engagement from the audience, made much more gratifying coming from an action oriented romantic comedy which could have stayed at the fluffy end of the scale. Personally, this is developing into a much more emotionally engaging drama than many melodramas that go over the top with "melo".

The comments about "is he, isn't he" is so apt for SW at this point because, SW actually does not know. Stellar acting by PHJ to be able to sell this.

The DH/WK bond is also very well developed. Through this episode, it is shown that DH/WK share a nearly "unbreakable" bond. Note that while DH seemed uncomfortable revealing her feelings for SW to her dad, it never occurred to her NOT to tell WK privately what she was feeling. Not only do WK and DH completely trust each other they are aware that the other person trusts them completely. This is a level of relationship that they share with no one else.

The writer is also playing out the dual personalities of the main characters. DH and WK have brasher outer personalities to hide their inner selves due to past betrayals and abandonment. SW's only anchor to his "real" personality is DH and he is getting more at risk of losing himself to his assumed role - and right now, he isn't even really aware that he is in such danger. (in real life, this is why actors/actresses who act as lovers report frequently that some feelings had developed - it is actually VERY hard to "act" out a role over an extended period of time and not have it bleed into your "real" persona.)

Finally even ME and SJ are displaying their dual personalities - pretending to have a perfect home while both of them have a hidden side. ME is obviously emotionally unfaithful to SJ (perhaps with good reason) and SJ is, more stereotypically for the moment, the "bad" guy trying to (sincerely, it would seem) be a good husband and father.

To me the dramatic climax of this show will be when each of these characters dual sides develop into irreconcilable conflict and how each person chooses to resolve this conflict.

I am hoping the writers make the characters self aware enough to actually understand and make these choices; SJ as to decide between his family legacy and his current family, ME between her family and WK, DH to trust again (once she inevitably gets deeply hurt finding out who SW actually is), WK to finally move ahead emotionally from ME.

I love what you said about Woon-kwang and Do-ha's unbreakable bond! They met each other when both were at a very vulnerable place in life, both going through betrayals and loss of someone they loved, it's this where they connected and it's the understanding of that that brought them together! I loved that Woon-kwang was genuinely happy for her but when he said that she'll be marrying soon, there was a hint of sadness in that, like a father and an older brother he was afraid that Seol-woo is going to steal his little sister from him, it felt so real and Park Sung-woong did a great job in bringing the right emotions for that scene, so touching!

On Seol Woo: My favourite scene has to be when he reused her words about secret agents to reassure her, and gently asked "you can do well, right?", because he knew she would be frightened. I know, it's a weird favourite scene to have, but I just thought that in that moment, he was 100% genuine. It had to be real. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he's madly in love, but he definitely cares. And I like that the show is letting me feel that. Baby steps, SW, baby steps.

What I find interesting is that there are moments where SW acts all grumpy about being so close to DH (shifting away in the car/zipping up the jacket), and then there are quieter moments where he's just contemplative - like when he opened his eyes on the sofa, or when he didn't turn away after she'd fallen asleep. Almost as though he were slowly realizing that he actually really liked her. When she described him as "rough yet soft" (so true) and did the magic trick, his eyes softened just by that little bit. He looked like he wanted this relationship to be real. It makes me think that his disgruntled faces aren't because he dislikes her, but because he's just having fun doing all those little reactions and being his usual childish self.

Notably, he hasn't really "lied" to her. Last episode, he straight out told her he was "hunting", and this episode he told her he's "a good liar". She just can't see past what he's saying and thus doesn't realize that it's fake.

On Dong Hyun: I hate to say this, but Dong Hyun is definitely getting worried about how fixated SW is over DH's safety. I'm sure he knows SW's modus operandi when it comes to missions and SW is acting differently this time. I know we can call SW a jerk for hurting her and pray for the ship to sail, but the fact is that SW is a ghost; anything to do with romance would jeopardize everything that they work for. SW and DH's relationship is like, right person, wrong time, wrong job. Should I be worried that Dong Hyun will make certain decisions by himself just to make sure that SW doesn't mess up his missions?

On DH's dad: He's the typical "lousy" parent in K-dramas, the one who's always irresponsible and makes their child have to take on the "parent" role instead. I already know we all dislike him. I wonder if SW feels especially bad because DH said that her dad's only around her now to get the ring - exactly what SW is doing. She's been abandoned by her dad all the time and it's SW's turn to do it.

On Woon Kwang and Do Ha: This pair continues to tug at my heartstrings every week. When WK shouted "You did IT, didn't you? You DID IT.", I burst out laughing because his mind was totally in the gutter and there was DH just grinning like an idiot because they'd kissed. Their conversation said so much about their amazing relationship with each other, and it's really no wonder that they adore each other. Also, how MUCH do I love...

I have to admit, I cried during this scene when it's supposed to be thrilling. My heart sank when he spoke gently to her over the phone, in a moment of urgency, one would get frustrated when the person on the other end of the line is asking too much questions, but I was touched that Seol-woo patiently instructed Do-ha and assured her to wait for him to come to her. And the moment he screamed her name over the phone, I was a goner, the sweetest name in my ear, weird, I know.

Yes to everything you said–Seol-woo speaking gently to Do-ha and being patient with her made me tear up because we all know what's gonna happen to her, but he's still keeping his cool to walk her through the impending danger. I couldn't contain myself when he asked her to be a spy and THAT QUESTION. Ugh, I was an emotional mess.

He was with her all the way, from the beginning to the end, he never left her, he kept smiling - that was so sad, somehow - and reassuring her and made it seem like a game. Then what he said, "covertly, secretly, like a spy movie" - he repeated the exact words she used, "You can do that well, right?" - spoken so gently, and "Keep the coin with you" and that promise, that made me cry, "so I can find you".

Re: Seol-woo. I looooooooove the moments you mentioned. They're quiet and so poignant imho. There's no questioning - at least in my mind- that he's being genuine right then: after the magic trick for example, like you said. Or during the kidnapping scene. Omg, when his voice goes all soft and quiet! alsdjalskjd I'm pretty sure that's Seul-woo's real voice. Like, we get to see glimpses of his true self during those moments.
It's kind of thrilling to see him unexpectedly show himself tbh. I think sometimes he doesn't even realize he's doing that and maybe sometimes he's doing it despite his better judgement, but oh god, what if he's actually discovering himself (or re-discovering himself) as we are discovering him? I mean, what if, after being a ghost agent for so long and living under cover, what if he doesn't know exactly who he is anymore?

However, it doesn't really matter why he's doing what he's doing. The journey is all that counts.

TL;DR SW's soft voice! AKLSJFLAGJKAJDHKFH ♥

Yesssss his soft voice! Especially when he pulled the coin out from behind her ear and said "like this?". He was just unexpectedly... tender and I think I fell really hard at that point.

I agree, living as a ghost for so long means that he's never really had the chance to be himself, except for when he's in his man-cave with Donghyun. He might even have forgotten what it's like to want things for himself, or do be selfish for his own sake, because he's always had to be a different person for his missions. I just want more, and more of these scenes that show him as the real Kim Seol Woo. (Interestingly, he didn't use a fake name?)

He's a really great guy who deserves to be happy.

Favourite Moments (Can it really be "favourite" when there are so many of them?) - Let's discuss our favourite squeal-worthy/heart-wrenching moments!

I'm going to do this list of favourite moments every episode, and this episode I might have fallen for SW. And while SW brought a lot of the humour in E6, I thought WK shone in the emotional scenes. Though few, they really wrecked my heart.

- SW's little smirk when she sent him a heart emoji, and Donghyun's "what the heck are you doing", LOL. And then the little speech bubbles went pop, pop, pop. Methinks our ghost agent K finds her adorable too.

- When she said they had to be like undercover spies and he uncontrollably cracked a smile. And again after he'd said she wasn't his style and she muttered about how she'd spent all morning getting ready. I think he's having FUN doing this with her.

- That raised eyebrow because he KNEW that the stylist was coming up the stairs, which was why he suddenly went all formal. How is that somehow hot?
- When DH was all grabby while trying to get SW to hide and he had to fend off her grabby hands WHILE refusing to hide. (Yes DH, don't think I didn't notice your hands all over his chest).
- SW's "wth" face at her lousy acting, and "I dropped a coin" with the flowery BGM, HAH. Then him throwing the coin pettily onto the bed? They're just like an old bickering couple already, it's so cute. I just like this whole scene, ok?

- He could have pretended he was asleep when she called his name, but he didn't. He also didn't turn away after she'd fallen asleep. Can I swoon now?

- I keep feeling like that little smile when she thanked SW for trying on the jacket had been genuine. (He looked so violated after she unzipped his jacket, hah!)

WK deserves a definite spot in my favourites list because he's awesome.
- The whole "PROTECT YOURSELF NO SKINSHIP" because teasing oppas are the best :')
- When WK wished DH luck with her relationship and told her he would hold a grand wedding for her. My heart, in pieces, now.
- When he told DH to be happy, it looked almost nostalgic, as though he were thinking of how unhappy he was, and how much he wished for DH to not be like him. It broke my heart.
- When he made sure her dad was ok by bringing him home, but then went all ice cold and warned him...

That part where he had breakfast with the father, he didn't look happy at all. That little mocking half-smile that flickered when her father said he's going to buy them a condo. So sad, somehow.

Ugh, this episode was the most emotional one for me, for the first time I truly hated Kim Seol-woo's character. Do-ha's sperm donor (I refuse to call him her father) is such a sorry excuse for a human being, I can't even come to understand how a person could be so selfish. I am truly afraid for Do-ha's mental health when both her father and Kim Seol-woo leave her. I mean she's probably used to her father leaving her anyway, but imagine how devastated she'd be when she finds out Seol-woo was using her on top of everything else. Ugh, and with how much Woon-kwang sticks up for Seol-woo, this family is about to be shaken to its core.
Thanks for the recap.

Oooh a complete opposite opinion! I totally fell for Seol Woo in this episode. *guilty look* I'm as gullible as Do Ha, aren't I? I keep trying to tell myself that he's fake anyway but I can't help thinking that there's more and more of his actions that are real.

I can't hate SW because this is ultimately... his job. Sure, his job isn't all that right on moral grounds, but he's doing what he needs to. I'm sure he's done it hundreds of other times and hurt hundreds of other women. I won't defend his actions but at the same time I understand that he doesn't really have a choice in the matter (besides quitting his job I guess).

Of course, instead of romancing her, he could have gotten close to her as a friend to get the information about the ring, but I think we can all agree that drama characters in the first throes of love are usually irrational and easier to manipulate, thus making his job much easier.

Sigh. This show just twists my insides.

Hmm, I just watched the video and don't know what I should think. It's impossible that Do-ha and Woon-kwang would allow him to stay near them after knowing his real identity and it looks like Woon-kwang is going to find out his identity in the next episode, unless...it drags on till the next next episode?

0

@maryxiah I think he'll apologize to them, and say it was his job, he had no choice but to pretend to be a bodyguard. I think he'll have to continue working as a bodyguard somehow?? maybe they get roped in to help him out in his mission? And I think DH will just pretend to shrug off the whole episode and say nonchalantly, "I wasn't taken in for an instance by you. I knew you were faking it. I was faking it, too, to see how far you would go." Something like that, to defend her hurt pride. And he'll know she's hurting, and pretend to believe her to make her feel better.

I just couldn't hate SW because I understand why he had to do the things he had done. I do not condone it but I see that those are necessary to achieve his mission.

Episode 6 ended on a cliffhanger and SW saying, “No. This was my plan.”

I think this was a brilliant ending. The ambiguity of these words is the crux of the whole drama: Does he, or does he not care for DH?

There are two possible interpretations:

A. “This was my plan.” – "I started this when I launched my plan, making her my target. I made her fall in love with me to gain access to her useless no-good father and the ring. Now she’s been abducted. It’s my fault she’s been abducted. I’m going to save her. A strange chill grips my heart when I think of her, alone and afraid, but I cannot dwell on this feeling. I must be calm and strong to find her. I know my actions may jeopardize the mission and compromise my cover. But I don’t give a damn, all that matters to me now is to get to her before they hurt her. If they hurt her, they will pay. Be strong, Do-ha, my brave girl. I am coming." (Taking liberties here with SW’s feelings because I want him to care for her.)

OR

B. “This was my plan.” – "This has been my plan all along, for her to be abducted, for her to lead me to the rogue ghost agent. It was only a matter of time before she got abducted. I hadn’t planned for it to happen so fast. That’s why I panicked when that useless no-good father of hers told me about the watch. But I calmed down in the car, I told her what to do, I told her to keep the coin with her. I’m going to go find the hideout, kill Rogue Agent, and rescue her. My priority is my mission. It’s my job. She is part of my job. I have no feelings whatsoever, no qualms, in using her to accomplish my mission. I do not let emotions cloud my judgement. I am ghost agent K, on my nameless mission to protect order and freedom."

I think B is more likely, but I’m hoping it’s A.

I wrote this after I watched it online, and the last line was, "This WAS my plan." In the recap here, chocolatte wrote: "This IS my plan." Which gives a totally different take on the plan, like this is his plan, to get her abducted, and lead him to the rogue agent! *cries bitterly*

The subtitles I watched also said "this is my plan". My interpretation of his line is that from this moment, he will do what he feels he must, not what he is being told, ie. follow DH's orders/advice. It is his plan, almost like saying it is his personal business. He already has the ring, his mission is done, he doesn't need to be involved anymore which is why DH told him to let the police handle it as to no further jeopardize his identity... which is already too late from what we've seen. Yes, here SW is going rogue...for DH!

I love your interpretation.

C. SW goes rogue and devises a new plan on the spot in a bid to save DH and exterminate the rogue agent.

Imagining SW going rogue makes me melt again....*dissolves into mush*

0

Both interpretations are plausible, but I'd like to think that it was not his plan to get Do-ha abducted. He chose to stay up all night on the sofa to protect her after he has given her the coin. If it was his plan all along, why would he stayed up to prevent her being abducted? I think SW has predicted that they will try to abduct her and that's why he gave her the coin, but he considered it as the worst case scenario.

But of course I could be totally wrong! We'll find out on Friday ^^

Definitely not A, it sounded too emotional and emotion is one foreign subject to Seol-woo. B is plausible, because they did draw the rogue ghost agent out once to kill him but failed, it's possible for Seol-woo to draw him out using Do-ha, but if it's true I'm going to be sorely disappointed in him. It's bad enough that he faked romance her, but to use her? I hope it's C, he hadn't planned for this but when it happened, he formulated a quick plan in his head to save Do-ha and take down rogue secret agent at the same time. I'm assuming he gave the coin to her because he hadn't gotten the ring yet and he wanted to speed up the process.

I love your interpretation C. It's what @needaname01 has said, in the exact same scenario. It'll make him human, and at the same time ensure he keeps his ghost agent cool. It balances the human and the agent in him. Perfect plan! It would explain why he panicked when he found out the watch was bugged. He hadn't planned for it. And he thought up a new plan as he made his way to the car (offscreen) on his feet, because as he has told us before, "the feet are very important, an agent thinks on his feet", and he did that as he hatched up a new plan after the fake break-up scene with DH. This is so cool. All these little snippets of information he shares with us about how a spy works are actually being put into play, and I can't believe I'm actually thinking like him now!

So this episode gave us heartwarming moments from WoonKwang... He is such a darling.... He genuinely loves people around him and that is why people stick to him despite his naughty and kidlike antics..... It was lovely and I was a little melting when he told he ll give her the best wedding.... And that is called Family.... And that is why Do Ha loves him dearly and takes care of him so much like a true little sister.... I would love to explore their relationship more so that we can have some more warm moments....

And dear SeolWoo, I really really hope you go down on your knees and beg Do Ha to take you when you realise your love... You have fallen in love and obviously you don't know about it.... I would love to see the couple in love without any secret agent things happening...

Sadly, the truth (I guess so) will be revealed on the next episode as what the preview showed us.
As for Seol Woo, I do think that he genuinely care for Do Ha and maybe one day it will be develop into love (or not ?) but Im still hoping for that to happen.... Besides, this drama is an Action/Spy/Comedy/ROMANCE so its not a bad thing to have hopes on their lovelife ?

Song Joong-ki could cameo as a cool army man, a mines expert, and he'd sweep the area for mines (no idea where, they're in South Korea) and they'd stumble and he'd fall on top of her. Sour SW will be watching all this drama at the sidelines.

Sorry to burst y'all bubbles, Song Joong-ki will cameo as an assistant director, and acting alongside Park Sung-woong. I really like how adorable Woon-kwang is with Do-ha. How he confronted her about her burgeoning relationship with Guard Kim and giving advise not to give kisses for a year or so. And how he confronted her father about how he is treating her. He is so protective of her and he is absolutely sweet while going about it. He has got to be one of my favorite characters in this show. He warmed up to me despite hating his diva attitude at the start.
I am quite conflicted on the Seolwoo and Doha relationship. I don't quite like that Doha fell so fast with Seolwoo. It just doesnt seem to be in character for her. I was half expecting that she would kick his ass a little about his actions and also continue to be half suspicious about it. With a father like Myung-suk, i was expecting that she wouldnt let people close too quickly with how he has hurt her repeatedly in the past.
As for Seolwoo, I do think that he is not in full control of his feelings. Especially when it comes with Doha. I do think that the success of the mission is still foremost in his mind. But with the mission and Doha intertwined, I think that we are seeing that his cold heart is slowly being chipped away without him being aware of it. Also Donghyun was right, SW sleeping over at Doha's was unnecessary. Since police patrol can be assigned and not sure if Donghyun knows but SW placed a tracking device on her. So SW was being reckless with that decision.

I thought Seol-woo's argument with Dong-hyun made sense, they're dealing with a rogue secret agent who doesn't answer to anyone but money, it would be very dangerous to leave Do-ha to normal policemen who aren't equipped to deal with these type of people, plus they didn't have the ring yet at the time. When he had gotten the ring though and still went out of his way to save Do-ha, he was showing signs of recklessness, but he still convinced Dong-hyun things were under his control. We don't know how much of it is true, but I'll bet he is truly in control of the situation.

I know that it’s risky for Seol-woo’s cover to be blown now, but am I the only one happy that the plot is moving briskly? It’s only a matter of time that our Chewing residents will find out that Seol-woo isn’t just an ordinary bodyguard, while I’m dreading the consequences for both Do-ha and Woon-kwang, I want the truth to come out sooner because I’m feeling rather conflicted over Seol-woo’s romancing mission right now.

In this episode alone, I went back and forth from swooning one minute, to getting huffy puffy the next. From our point of view, we could see that Seol-woo laced his lies with truthfulness, so we can’t exactly begrudge him over deceiving Do-ha, because well...he isn’t! What I’m most uncomfortable with this whole fake romance isn’t the fact that Do-ha is falling so hard and fast, because I totally get it, this is the first time a guy confessed to her and pursued her, it’s no brainer that she’d fall for it. I’m uncomfortable with the fact that Seol-woo’s actions are too hard to read, which quite frankly, makes it hard to properly root for the OTP. While rooting for a romance that started with a lie is probably not a good idea, I was hoping to see more emotions on Seol-woo’s front, we did occasionally see a crack of emotion in him, but it was often fleeting and I had to take a guess at what he was feeling. For me, that is not a good progression of feelings/thoughts. So I can understand why some beanies are finding it hard to relate to Seol-woo seemingly fall for Do-ha, I mean I can see it, but sometimes I’m not even sure if it’s true.

One may argue Seol-woo is THAT good at playing the field, because he’s very tactical at it and rarely involves his true emotions. He is so good that he deceived everyone around Do-ha, and even Woon-kwang is wishing the best for Do-ha. Basing on Woon-kwang and Do-ha’s interactions, we know how protective these two are to each other, so by giving them his blessing, he essentially approved of Seol-woo. Which brings me to my point that Seol-woo is too good at concealing himself, not that it’s a bad thing because he’s a ghost agent that shouldn’t be tied to anything and is required to camouflage himself to avoid getting caught, but it’s bad for the progressing romance. I sincerely hope there’s a more solid revelation in the next episode because right now I’m not able to be fully on board with this OTP.

On the other hand, everyone may argue that Do-ha’s father is a jerk and doesn’t deserve to be her father (I do agree to some extent), but children don’t get to pick their parents and I was happy to see Do-ha willing to give her father another chance by the end of the episode. He is cowardly but he isn’t completely unredeemable, he wanted to give her daughter a dowry thinking she met a good man and should save some face, to me, that is touching. And when Woon-kwang told him to get out of Do-ha’s life and stop breaking her heart, he acknowledged it and was willing to do it. Like Do-ha, I have a soft...

spot for her father, I may not like what he has done, but I’m hoping he won’t abandon Do-ha because that’s the one thing she really feared.

I am so grateful that in the midst of all this craziness of a secret agent romancing a normal girl for the sake of mission, Woon-kwang proves to be a safe haven for Do-ha. I cried when he told Do-ha she has a brother that will prepare a big wedding gift for her, and when he told Do-ha’s father that she has a wealthy celebrity brother. D’aww. Every time he gets serious about Do-ha, he just melts me into a puddle of goo because I totally feel for his affections! Though their relationship probably started with a sense of emotional dependency, I feel better knowing they’ve grown to be so much more over the years. I was initially baffled with their relationship and thought there was a room for romance, because he kept calling her Ms. Cha, but then on some occasion, Woon-kwang would softly call her “Do-ha ya”, and then I understood, their relationship has evolved to more than just colleagues, they’ve become true family, and it’s abundantly clear in this episode. I literally laughed out loud when Woon-kwang acted like a true brother asking Do-ha not to move too fast with skinship. And the screencap with his poster in between Do-ha and Seol-woo, that was a stroke of genius, I felt chills when I saw his poster side-eyeing Seol-woo. LOL.

All rants aside, I can’t wait for Friday to come!

I feel exactly like you, I keep see-sawing between extremes, swooning one minute to wait, is he being genuine? The enigma that is SW just keeps us guessing as to his true feelings. Every time Donghyun rebukes him saying he's crossing the line, I'd go, Oooh, he likes her! and then SW would reply with that deadpan face and give his very clinical reasons as to why he's doing it, and I'd deflate, like a popped balloon.

And the explanations that he provided Dong-hyun made sense every time. For me, their conversation about Do-ha's father is probably the only time Seol-woo was stripped off all his calculative and manipulative self, when he commented that Do-ha had the right to abandon her father, I sensed abandonment issue in him, like he was almost too empathic with her, which would be out of character.

Anyway, after seeing episode 7 preview and the article translation you linked me, I'm ready for what's coming. I hope the change part is true because I can't wait to see a more kickass Do-ha and a flustered Seol-woo.

When he said to himself that he had to protect her, my first thought was "Aww." But then I ask myself, why would he say that? I noticed that whenever Do-ha asked or said something to Seol-woo, he never really lied, he concealed his real identity that's true, but everything else he said had been truthful. So when she asked why he was sleeping like that, and he answered to himself to protect her, I thought he was being truthful. He could have said, "it's my mission to protect you" but instead he said "because I must protect you." It could still be part of his mission, but based on his wording, I feel like it's part of his wish too. I could be reading too much into it though.

The identity thing is what's bothering me too...this is why I think he planned this all along. I mean, the only thing he can do now to still be undercover (at least with the enemies) is kill everyone haha otherwise, how is he still a ghost?

Okay, this was an episode that managed to make me swoon then scared, then back to swooning and then back to being sad and scared again. First of all, lets give the writer some credit here. A trained ghost agent with years of experience and training won't fall for a girl just like that. Even if he starts to, I assume he'll know really well to hide that when necessary. Seol Woo, in my opinion isn't in love with Do-Ha yet, she manages to make a tiny crack in his otherwise cold and calculated exterior wall which he uses to keep his missions under his control and also his emotions. I am guessing her genuine concern for the well being of others around, non-fussy, non-demanding nature and her past history of abandonment either got to him or resonated with him somehow. The smile while texting, 24 hour round-the-clock security detail and the last scream when the kidnappers are dragging Do-Ha all point to that. Also, he seems completely reckless in the teaser for next episode but that could be misleading. Given all of that, the only way to sell a romance in any capacity is for all the concerned parties being outed. And the writer did exactly that. Agent K has blown his cover which will both ensure his safe exit without any ties to hold him back and also a ground to start it fresh with Do-ha and Un Kwang.
Now, I am sure Do-Ha will be heartbroken but I have a feeling she is made of stronger stuff. She did deal with her deadbeat, pathetic father for years so she knows first hand how to block untrustworthy people who keep hurting her out of her life. Also, if recent articles are to be believed, Do-Ha will change in the second half and it was significant that they had a good actress to ensure that transition is well done. It did mention that Do-Ha would be unappealing and a little odd-ball but will change as the story progresses. So, I am guessing we might be in for a Do-ha 2.0 and no, I don't think the change means a beautiful dramatic makeover but rather how she is as a person. Not the naive girl where her heart is concerned but a bit more experience, confidant and perhaps cold. At any rate, I look forward what the drama has in store for us. Its not predictable so I am ready to see how it goes. Also, the romance is going to be more Mika and Joe and less Bong Soon and Min Hyuk type so I guess its time to adjust expectations. I still love this show.

Agree! I think Do-ha had been more like a source of amusement for SW, but her overall situation resonated with him on this episode so I think he's warming up to her. Maybe his empathy on the subject has to do with his background, which I hope they explore! I really wanna know what happened to him to make him so perfect to become a ghost agent (especially the "I don't even trust myself" comment on the first episode, that was so sad for me)
I never watch previews or read articles so I didn't know she was supposed to change on the second half, but we can assume it'll stem from him blowing his cover, and I think you're right about this being the only shot they have at an actual romance so it'll be interesting to see how SW manages to make not only Do-ha trust him again but us as an audience stop being suspicious about every single gesture of his.
Hopefully, Do-ha will be able to navigate through this mess with her head held up high and not a completely shattered heart!

Agree with you. I like that it's so real, that he hasn't fallen headlong in love with her, unlike other Korean dramas. This is a different type of story, and a different type of leading man. I like what you said about the tiny crack that she's making in his cold and calculated spy exterior wall. It's tiny little chips, nothing drastic, so slight it's almost unnoticeable, but it's there all the same, cracking away, chipping away at that block of (necessary) ice around his agent's heart. That's why we cheer when we see a little sign of that crack, a half-smile, that shows that he is affected by her. I think that's one reason why I like this drama so much - the enigma of SW and trying to puzzle out the does he/doesn't he question every episode, and sharing it with you all here is so fun.

Words alone cannot express how I feel about PHJ's acting in this drama. He is slaying me on every level and that scene in bedroom where he's pretending to hide, egged on by DH, has me in stitches every single time. His reaction to everything that transpires between DH and the other lass is to die for. And then the zombie-like manner in which he emerges from his hiding place is such a hoot! The dour look he sends DH when she affects a fake surprise sent me into a fit of giggles.
His versatility was particularly evident in this episode I thought.

But my favourite scene was definitely the wall-coin trick one. That exemplified to me what a good fit DH is for him and his growing but subtle appreciation of her as a smart, capable human being.

The family relationship between Do Ha and Woon Kwang is legit my favourite thing ever. I am pretty sure I have said this before but the way he looks after her and makes sure that she is alright is just super duper adorable. I love that he looks after her in his own way and I just felt their family bond sooo much during the dinner with Do Ha's dad.

The way Woon Kwang looks after her is just down right amazing and I seriously would love to have a big bro like that in my life. I have to admit if Seol Woo doesn't step up his game all my love is going to move to this character.

Seriously Seol Woo. Clear up your feelings.

But maybe the reason he is like this is because he has never really felt "true love" for someone? That is just my guess. He might be saying it is "for the mission" in his head but it isn't coming out that way in his actions. I am scared with the lack of maturity for these actual feelings he will put not only himself but the others around him in danger.

YES to the familial LOVE between Woon-kwang and Do-ha! The way Woon-kwang treats Do-ha makes me wish I had an older brother like him, too. He's so sweet and caring towards her. I love how much he looks out for her and their relationship is just adorable. At first, I thought Do-ha loved her Hallyu star oppa so much and said Hallyu star also loved himself so much, making their dynamic so weird, but they're so much more than that and I'm so glad we're seeing more of it. I find it extremely endearing that when Woon-kwang calls them all a "family," that he really means it and they really all become one little family.

You may be right with the not having felt true love before...I wonder if he'll maybe realize that he doesn't feel lonely or bored as he did in previous missions. My guess is they'll have a falling out after his cover is blown and he'll figure his feelings out when he's not around their little family any more

Thank you so much for the recap @chocolatte!

This is an amazing episode and a lot happened. I believe that this episode is a turning point for DH and SW. In episode 5 it seemed crystal clear that SW never had anything on DH except to use her on the completion of his mission. While in episode 6 he still does that but there were "moments" where you see genuine feelings from SW towards DH. And, they are oh so gratifying after watching all the act. Maybe he was already unconsciously falling for DH along the way, we saw glimpses of that. It was quite telling in episode 6. It was so funny how he smile/smirk while texting to her and then had to go back at his stoic apperance when DH noted of it. I feel like he is enjoying his time with her. I could see that from previous missions, like that with Anna Liebert, he immerse himself but felt empty, whereas here I could sense that it isn't the case, and I hope I am right. I find it really funny how he reacted to her appearance when she clearly made up herself for him but told him to keep what they have a secret. She was so miffed with what he said and he's enjoying her reaction. The coin scene was also very poignant. I love how she was able to illicit a genuine reaction from SW, he is looking so tenderly at her. I also love the scene when they are about to fall asleep and they are shown opposite each other in the screen. There too I feel SW's tender gazes to DH, not the usual calculated look but someone who cares and when DH went to him while he was sitting outside and asked why he is sitting while sleeping outside and he answered in his thought, "Because I want to protect you.", I just melted into a poodle of goo and I am almost so convinced that he has really fallen for her.

This drama keep dropping hints but I still don't know where it will lead. This moment showed that DH is a capable equal to SW and that she can be better at some things too. Will she be a partner to him? I would have love it if UK and DH will be involved in some sort in this mission. (At one interview, it was said that DH will be his partner)

Seeing all of the cute in episode 6, it made me feel conflicted with my position on their relationship. I feel like SW finally felt but still not acknowledging his feelings to DH. As you've mentioned, he crossed the line twice. It's not as if he has to do that. As DH said, he is an outstanding agent who does his job very well and he can always look for ways to secure DH without compromising his identity or the mission. I felt that he felt responsible for putting her into such a dangerous position that he needed to be there himself. That would prove to be out of character for him because that would mean his feelings are involved. I love the out-of-character SW, he needs to be rattled and he needs to care for someone. He needs to have a family of his own. Althought that would be difficult for a ghost agent to have. I really need to see some backstory...

So I totally started tearing up at the last part when Seol-woo found out that Do-ha was being followed and he was walking her through what she should do to protect herself. The way he gently guided her and asked her to pretend to be a spy in a James Bond movie and he'll come find her, was so sweet. My sweet Do-ha... I can't believe they caught her and I hope they don't hurt her. Guard Kim, come quick!

This was the episode where I actually said to myself, "I like her [Kim Min-jung as Do-ha]. She's good." I was iffy about her casting, but she really grew on me and now I find her absolutely adorable and only want the best for her. I think it was that scene at the restaurant where she had to raise her voice at her father that had me rooting for Do-ha. It was so uncomfortable because I felt so bad for her--it was embarrassing that her dad kept pressing Woon-kwang about investing money and whatnot. Their outside conversation just made it worst, in that, I felt even worst for her when the flashback showed all those angry people coming at her (at her grandpa's wake, no less) about all the trouble her dad caused AND HE WAS HIDING RIGHT THERE, BUT HE FRIGGIN' LEFT HIS DAUGHTER THERE to get attacked! Smh... when she told him to get out of her life, I was like, "Yes, please do that."

Woon-kwang continues to be the Best Oppa Ever. Seriously, he's so sweet. I loved his conversation with Do-ha last ep and I friggin' love him more when he had a heart-to-heart with Do-ha's dad and told him to stop breaking his daughter's heart and that she has someone that'll treat her well and him as an older brother to take care of her and give her all the best. He really does love her like a lil' sis.

I cried, he was so calm and gentle with her and I loved it when he reassured her that he will find her, that was so touching!

And yes, she does grow on you, this is my first Kim Min-jung drama so I wasn't sure of what to expect from her, I found her likable from the first episode but now I absolutely love her character here! It was heartbreaking to see her voice shake a little while she was trying to get her father to stop, it must've been enraging yet so embarrassing especially she knows that Woon-kwang knows which kind of a person her father is! And I think that's what softened Seol-woo towards her, I think he himself had abandonment issues so he connected with her at that!

I love the ending scene too. It's so calm, yet the danger is there. You don't feel the danger because of the reassurance until it hits you. Nicely done, SW!

That restaurant scene when she raised her voice at her father, and she said, "Stop it, now you're even scamming WK ?!!" and Oppa just quietly lays a hand over hers, and squeezes it tightly, I swoon. Is that real or fake, I don't care, Oppa, why do you keep turning me into jelly at the most unexpected moments?

I'm enjoying the slapstick humor that is entwined within the main characters. It's never too silly or too serious/anxious. Thus far, it's hitting the right balance.

I'm looking forward to further character development especially for Seol-woo. We have developing backstories for Woon-kwang and Do-ha but nothing for Seol-woo. I need to understand why Seol-woo is the way he is in order for me to connect to the character on an emotional level and be fully vested in the show. I'm getting there but not there yet.

Whether he realizes or not, his actions and nuanced reactions show that he is developing genuine feelings towards Do-ha. I think he is immune to basic emotions.

I enjoyed the warm and sincere familial bond between Woon-kwang and Do-ha in this episode.

SW's background story is exactly what I'm waiting for too. I think that he may have some abandonment issues (if I think about how he reacted to the whole Do-ha and her dad relationship), but at this point, without being given any clues, anything we say or think is just random, baseless ideas. It's fun to speculate about his past life, but I do think they're lagging behind with this and thus is difficult to throw ourselves entirely into the story and completely get behind the main couple.
And YES to him being immune to basic emotions!!! I feel like his entire body will shut down whenever he realizes there's something 'wrong' with how he's behaving/reacting/feeling

I am loving this show?
The actress is growing on me now.

It's interesting that the first episode showed us that agent k can cheat a lie detector but he is finding it hard to cheat cha do-ha. One reason for this could be because her dad is constantly lying so she has practice. In the future perhaps Seol-woo will realize that the simple, easy and extreme girl is hard to fool.

Am loving park hae Jin in this role !!!

Didn’t realize I’d be watching the kdrama version of Taken… I knew Do Ha would be in danger but I wasn’t expecting it to play out like that! What Do Ha was saying about her dad only using her when he needs something and then leaving afterwards was disheartening… Your namja chingu is planning to do the same thing :(. I still can’t ship this couple yet. I was warming up to Seol Woo throughout the episode especially when he got so worried about her being abducted, but that very last line about him having this as part of his plan threw me off… I hope he wasn’t purposefully allowing her to be in danger.

I don't think he was purposefully allowing her to be in danger. There was no need for him to use her as bait or something. It's because of the watch, that's why she's in danger.

I think the subtitles I had were misleading. When I watched the episode it sounded like this was all part of his plan, but the DB recap makes it seem like he was going to act on his own now and start a new plan based on his emotions. But yes, that darn watch!!

You know what I think? I think Seol-woo has abandonment issue, so as to not get hurt again, he put up a wall around his heart and refuse to let people in, thus why he said in the first episode he only feels loneliness and indifference. Whenever he gets entangled with romance in a mission, he's always the one to flee and cut off all connections because he fears it being done to him. And he told Dong-hyun once, he likes it clean cut and no attachment, I figure he doesn't want anyone to suffer the same abandonment he felt even if he's the one to run away, hence always choosing death to clean up messy feelings.

What he didn't expect in Do-ha is this sense of familiarity. I honestly feel Seol-woo sees himself in Do-ha when she talked about her father. She feared to be abandoned and he recognized it as his own fears, so he shared his thought on it and asked her to leave her father if she could do it. When Do-ha was kidnapped, I think Seol-woo knew she would be in danger, but not under his watch, hence he said: "it's my plan." Seol-woo may not want to be in a real romance with Do-ha, but I think he has bonded with Do-ha, enough not to let harms be done on her or let her feel being abandoned.

I agree, there's a reason for why Seol Woo does what he does (keeps his emotions in check, cuts off ties & connections, etc.) and I'm looking forward to understanding how he ended up this way. With Do Ha, she found Woon Kwang as someone she can be close to in a brotherly-sisterly way, but Seol Woo didn't have those ties to help him cope (until now!).

While this episode full of flutter and cute antics I must say Kim Min Jung's acting chop really shined during mellow, sad scene. I noticed some comments about she not being pretty and her big eyes is distracting but during the chimaek scene with DH and WK, KMJ teary eyed really speaks to me.Tbh I cried a little, props to 2 talented actors PSW and KMJ ??????.
I have been waiting for the recaps to spazzz about ep6. How cute uri Guard Kim around DH. I know Im headed for a heartache but I couldn't stop shipping them.. DH is soo cute and weird that even our resident player-spy couldn't resist. That touchy hand in during windbreaker scene and car scene. That hilarious totally-obvious-hiding-behind the bed scene.
While Guard Kim antics is hilarious but I find myself cringe sometimes during his scene. Maybe Im used to PHJ being cool, caring oppa and nice that intended-comedy seems distant for him. He is still cute tho.
The plot is moving fast! I mean he already found the ring! and I reckon they will faced Ki-chul next ep. Yes, lets all the spy shenanigans pass so we'll have Guard Kim romancing DH for full episodes!

Cant wait for next ep!

On reading the comments I see that I take an entirely different approach to the KSW character to most. For me not knowing what he's really thinking or feeling... ie. where the mask begins and ends... is the most intriguing part of the show and probably the point of the entire exercise. I love the idea of the romance albeit a manipulated one but the romance is the vehicle invoked to peel away the layers of the mask.

There are no real big mysteries to this show. Everything is clearly delineated in terms of who the bad guys and good guys are, what their intentions are and what agendas are at stake. It all seems rather clear-cut.
However it seems to me that the real mystery of the piece... the true enigma is KSW. So far it's been established that he is a masterful operator. He thinks on his feet, multitasks dexterously, puts into place backup plans, takes on rogue operatives and ingratiates himself with female targets to achieve his goals. To intents and purposes he is a super spy, the guy who will do all the government's dirty work and slip into any kind of persona as required. This is someone who has no identity of his own (as we're constantly reminded). He has no attachments, no roots or personal life to speak of. He is a multi-talented nobody who has found his talent of being anyone but himself.

I suppose the question for me isn't what makes this person tick but how can such a person be unmade in order for that discovery to occur. What would completely shake him out of his comfort zone, derail him from his present trajectory to occupy the space of normality?

My thinking falls along these lines. If he had to come face to face with himself... his own desires and feelings... he would be on a collision course with his chameleonic talents. He would most certainly come into conflict with himself.

For me the romance isn't about the romance but the unpacking of KSW. I'll the throw the bromance in there too as a variable. How do you solve a riddle like KSW... and make him unravel?

The disruption, it occurs to me, has already begun.

I really like your analysis and views here.

I am also intrigued by KSW and who is he exactly. I also agree that it is the main point which is why we keep having this line from KSW at the start of every episodes that he is a ghost agent, a shadow with no name or identity.

I am really enjoying the drama as it is so different from the normal Korean drama.

It is, isn't it? It's hitting all the right notes so far.

I suppose it's why I'm not really angry with him because a) I don't see him as DH's fake boyfriend
b) His interactions with DH and UG will be a major paradigm shift for him
c) This situation will affect his ability to do his job in future (I'm speculating)

I´m just so scared for Do-ha. She is a sweetheart (-not to say that she isn´t also strong-) and her heart is about to be broken. The relationship with her father is already pretty awful, but if Seol-woo hurts her too, how is she ever going to trust a man again? At least there is Oppa, who is just so adorable with her.
I don´t think that Seol-woo has fallen for her. He is softening towards her, but he himself is so out of touch with his own feelings, that he doesn´t even realize it. It takes a kidnapping for him to notice that she means a little more, than his other targets, but I don´t believe this is enough for him to understand that he is falling for her.
It is ridicules how angry it makes me, that he is playing with the hearts of others. I am still waiting for Anna Liebert to show up, so that she can get an apology that she deserves. I know that it is his job, but he is breaking hearts on purpose when he is toying with them and that is hard to justify with: oh I had to get a thing, with a secret code, blabla... I might be able to forgive him, if we knew how important these things were. So far we just see a bunch of a**holes trying to get the upper hand over each other and that is just meh, for me.

Thanks for the recap, chocolatte!

I love the end scene where SW gently guided her to the bathroom. He looked genuinely frightened (PHJ even looked a bit teary-eyed?) about her safety, but talked with a gentle voice so she won't be panicked.

And I like how he didn't beat around the bush and just honestly said that she'll be abducted. I'm thinking that he probably wanted to say, "You'll soon be abducted, but I'll be coming to save you so don't worry," to reassure her, but the bad guys had gotten to her before he can say the second part.

By the way, does anyone know the OSTs during the good night scene at her house and the one during the scene where DH leaned her head on his shoulder? Those two are currently my fave OST in this drama, but I can't find them.

I'm still not totally sold on the couple! Idk if it's because there's insta-love involved from Do-ha's side, or the constant mixed signals from Seol-woo, but it's just not clicking for me. I do understand that these are just a part of their characterization, so I'm still somehow waiting for me to get emotionally invested in this drama.
