Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

What’s on your slate this week? I have a ton of shows I meant to start this week, given that there were a lot of brand-new or still-newish shows to choose from… and yet, I mostly found comfort in old ones, which at least were comforting and satisfying in their own ways. I promise I’ll catch up on the new shows… someday… hopefully before they’re considered old shows.

Man to Man: The tone of the opener was a little more scattered than I was expecting, although I do think the action looks pretty spiffy and Park Hae-jin seems perfect for this character. But any K-drama that has an introduction that’s heavily foreign-shot (and -acted; mostly it’s the acting) is bound to make me cringe, so while I’m not holding it against this show for upholding that particular status quo, I’m also not particularly impressed, either. I’ll give it another week before I decide what I think.

Father, I’ll Take Care of You: Ha! At this point, I find it inadvertently hilarious how, despite all the bad blood and revenge plots and antagonism that’s gone down between the Han clan and Hyun-woo, the various Han family members still keep seeking him out, whether it’s to yell at him, plead with him, or ask him favors. There’s a reason why Koreans have that saying about how constant contact can turn even hate to grudging attachment. I half expect to see the Hans insisting they can’t stand Hyun-woo five years down the line, even as they drop by every weekend for Sunday dinner, or bring him birthday presents.

Father Is Strange: Mwahaha, life is about to get interesting with cocky Lee Joon moving into the cramped Byun household. I can’t imagine how he’ll last longer than a weekend, although watching him try will be all of the fun. Also, did anyone else cheer when Jung So-min’s conversation with her old bully was caught on Unni’s voice recorder? I can’t wait for Lee Yuri to stand up for her little sister, because it had better be epic. I’m a little sad that Dad had to take such a hit to his image as a devoted dad in order to convince the family to take in the supposed half-brother, but I can see how it was the only way. I just hope that will get smoothed over later when everyone realizes he’s still the honorable Dad they’d always believed him to be.

The Liar and His Lover: There are so many things I want to talk about but not enough space to get into them! Like how I love-hate (but mostly love) how the music snippets play in such teasing drops that I’m dying to hear the full song by the time we get it, or how Choi Min-soo is the perfect quirky dad. Or how I initially thought that watching Han-gyul really step it up, putting So-rim first and showing his faith in her at every step, was the best thing this week. But then all the Crude Play development and substitute-performance conflict erupted and threw everybody into intersecting, but discrete, tracks of desperation and I was moved at how deep the emotional threads run, and how this drama has intertwined them so thoroughly that they all feel part of the same pain, although each person experiences it from a different angle. I felt an unexpectedly strong blow at the realization that the Crude Play boys have been using Han-gyul’s supposedly inferior bass playing to practice with, when all along that’s been one of Han-gyul’s biggest insecurities. Although he’ll never beat out Chan-young on the inferiority complex front—it breaks my heart every time Chan-young realizes that he’s only a stand-in for the guy everybody likes better than him… which made that ending sacrifice extra heart-pinchy. My heart was already pretty bruised—I don’t know if it can take much more!

girlfriday

Man to Man: This drama is silly, wacky fun and I really enjoy the fish-out-of-water hijinks for Park Hae-jin the super spy surrounded by the weirdness of showbiz folk. His deadpan expressions are priceless, and it cracks me up that he’s in an action-thriller and everyone else is in a comedy, but neither side seems to notice that they’re inhabiting the same space.

Chicago Typewriter: The end of Episode 6 finally pulled the three leads together in a way that started to make me care, which I would still argue is too darned long to make me wait. But now that we’re here, I’m glad to delve into these characters’ previous lives as freedom fighters, friends, and lovers. Now in the present day, I’m not so sure how Se-joo plans to make amends for his foot-in-mouth syndrome for the millionth time. Maybe he should start by adopting the dog.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Yay for some forward movement. I have to admit—they totally got me when the people came to Gil-dong’s rescue and were so proud to stand up and fight by his side, even in the face of death. He inspires that in people, which is really the big development we’ve been working for. It was also a huge relief when the show stopped being trolly about Eorini and fleshed out her story. Nothing made me happier than when she called Gil-dong and Gil-hyun “oraboni” again.

Whisper: Well the villains certainly stepped up their game, didn’t they? I was getting fatigued by all the flip-flopping in the initial case, so I found it a nice change of pace when the baddies decided to inject some new mayhem into the story. I much, much prefer Lee Bo-young out of that office and on the run, and I’d pay cash money if they could get Lee Sang-yoon out of there too, but maybe his office has an invisible force field that activates if he ever tries to leave it.

Mystery Queen: This week’s mystery kind of veered into absurd territory, but the emotional payoff we got in exchange was worth it. It was pretty gratifying to see Kwon Sang-woo in a position where he needed Ajumma’s help, after the hard time he’s given her in every possible moment up until now. There was satisfying karmic reversal and even a big hero moment, though you gotta love how Ajumma was all, “I would’ve saved myself!”

Crime Scene 3: I’m so excited for a whole new season of murder mysteries to solve. I’m happy to say that the third season is off to a solid start with the new cast members, though I did think to myself at one point, “I miss Hong Jin-ho’s flailing.” Everyone seemed too calm for murder suspects, and I miss having someone on the cast who trips over his words and gets animatedly anxious about the whole thing.

Currently recapping: Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People

Whisper: Oh man. Oh man. Chickachunga has been raving about this drama for AGES. So I decided to give it a try, and it completely took over my life (for the last two days). Lee Bo-young is love, and my Monday-Tuesday life is officially over until this drama is over. LOL, thanks chickachunga.

Man to Man: Hmmm, maybe my expectations were too high again, but I will hold off judgment until a few weeks in.

"There are so many things I want to talk about but not enough space to get into them!"

lmao. and then she goes on into a long paragraph. turns out there might be enough space. :)
this is why there are so many comments in the recaps, there are so many things going on with so many characters at the same time, and you care about all of it so you can't help but want to talk about all of it. my twitter timeline gets flooded every time a new episode airs, I feel bad for my followers.

Liar is one of those dramas where recapping it might enhance the viewing experience. There's so much character analysis to be done, I bet JB recaps the drama and writes commentaries in her head anyway.

I had high expectations for man to man as well. I thought some of the plot developments were all over the place and just didn't make any sense. Like why would a high profile secret agent get distracted by a girl and just stare hopelessly while a man plants a car brake impediment...and then just let the guy he is supposed to be protecting get in that car and drive off anyway? That was beyond ridiculous. And something seems off with the editing and background music. If I didn't like Park hae-jin so much, I would already be moving on. I'm seriously considering it right now...

DON'T LET HIM GET IN THE CA-

Just so he can steal a police car and show off some nail-biting fake action. At least don't make him spot the suspicions guy before he messes up the car and watches on while said guy walks away suspiciously. That's the same secret agent who got the country's finest security in that metro wagon.

I disagree because of context. Remember the entire bodyguard gig is a cover and there were no threats or anything suggesting that a bodyguard was even needed. He simply observed something at the set but had no context to believe anyone would try to sabotage the car since the entire bodyguard thing was a subterfuge to begin with.

Yes BUT, with Seol-woo's presumed background as top secret agent with a reputation to behold, he wouldn't just observe a suspicious man. If he really was a spy, he would be on constant lookout for signs of WHY things look out of place and wouldn't even question his judgements but act and hence be quick on his feet. As we saw in episode 4, he recalled the appearance of said suspiscious man down to what he was wearing and holding, meaning Seol-woo has impeccable memory. With that kind of information and with the kind of job he does, realistically Seol-woo would have acted fast. Makes no sense.

Aaand if you want me to get reaally picky, given Seol-woo has been researching everyone in the group, he should have already noted that Woon-gwang had had a major accident like that in the past, and that such could happen on film set. He needn't have made the connection that the two were connected, but his instincts ought to have spurred him to check on the car before allowing VIP in.

0

Lol.. we are so nitpicky. But I just picture it as Seol Woo doesn't has feeling to Woon Kwang yet so he doesn't has the will to anticipate it earlier.

I actually start watching Crime Scene thanks to Girlfriday's comment last week and gosh, I almost miss an amazing show. I also fell in love with Hong Jin-ho almost instantly. He's just so cute with his bad pronounciation (that makes him even more adorable to me). Thanks to him I also start watching The Genius. He's a lovable sexy brain man with short tongue but an amazing brain

Yeah. I was laughing so hard everytime he said he needed subtitle so that everyone could understand him. His deduction is always the best but too bad the cast members usually don't believe him haha

Radiant Office - loving this little gem of a drama. sad it's ending soon.

TLAHL - was a bit skeptical about this when it started but now it's my other "can't wait for next episode"

FITCY - the end is almost here. 4 episodes to go and still has a lot of loose ends to tie up. im mostly looking forward how dh gets her revenge on her real uncle & cousin.still annoyed with the mom & bratty daughter

Man to Man - still on the fence on this one.

Secret Romance - fluff & clichè to keep me company while i do other things.

Always-late-to-the-party watching: Man to Man & My Secret Romance
binge-watched: Weightlifting Fairy
Currently reading (because of Kdrama slump): Dr Jin's recaps LOL

CT took over my life and the preemption (albeit a day) left me browsing for other things to do and shows to watch. Pick up Man to Man and My Secret Romance but as much as I love Park Hae Jin & Sung Joon, I will always be late to the party since I only watch them at later hours.

Binge-watched Weightlifting Fairy and still giggles and get warm-hearted at all BokJoonHyung antics.

And rereading Dr Jin's recaps out of boredom LOLLL and those still had me in stitches haha

The weekend is here~~~! And a ton of new episodes to watch. xD
I have a long list of dramas so I'll just mention a few things:

My Secret Romance: Lightweight show. Pretty cute and funny. Lovely OST! ❤️ The general plot isn't addictive, but this week's episodes ended on a good cliffhanger. I think the main love triangle will be gripping. But omg, they use TOO many sound effects and it's just not subtle at all.

On the other hand, I like the sound effects used in Man to Man EP 3. I love Seol Woo's funny, exasperated reactions to Woon Kwang's comments/orders. Still need to watch EP 4, but I'm liking this show just fine. :)

I'm not a 50 episodes drama type of person. I tried 'our gap soon' just for song jae rim and kim so eun. I quit b/c of the dysfunctional, self-centered, hypocritical families.

By the recommendations of dramabeans, i started to watch 'father is strange'...and b/c of jung so min. I like it a lot. I did fast forward a few scenes but i appreciate that it is more of a FAMILY drama!!

Same jb, same. The music never disappoints. The perk of having a genius songwriter as the protagonist - and a full cast armed with previous musical background.

And I love Park Hae Jin in it.

My guilty pleasure right now is My Secret Romance. It's predictable and kinda feels like an early 2000s drama but it's so addicting and the only thing I find entertaining. I'm praying to the drama gods that in the next few weeks I'll be blessed with some new good dramas.

The Return of Superman: Sungjae and Daebak are love ❤
Crime Scene (chinese version): while waiting for CS s3 being subbed, I decide to pick this ver up, and I'm not disappointed. It's really good and less serious than korean ver but still great. Bai Jing Ting with his puppy eyes ?. Sa and He are nice combo! Gui gui is weird but pretty nice touch to balance the show.
I suggest you to watch it!

Chicago Typewriter - Yoo is my favourite thing now to --blush-- . Plainly adorbs and lovable.

Tunnel - Enjoying Yoon Hyun Min. He deliver nuances very well and I hope I see him in more dramas. And enjoying the dynamic with female lead which is a very intriguing character.

My Secret Romance - Aahhh Eye candy drama.

CITT - Starting it and want to stop before the train wreck. I really love the manhwa so for first 3 episode its different from storyline but it portray the essence well. Its a pity because I really love KGE in this role and she is killing it (she doesnt look like the character but she captures her essence). Much as I am on the fence on PHJ in MXM he did it really well here. Bora is really lovable which I cant say the same for most of the forgettable sidekicks and/or second lead.

MXM - Man, I love divaish behaviour in kdrama. I like the second lead more and YJH. He reminds me of John Travolta in Face on/off where you can literally see he is so excited to become a villain. PHJ I am on the fence. He looks cool and he is a hot eye candy. But I am lacking the detailed nuance I have seen in YHM in Tunnel.

omo I got so excited when girlfriday mentioned Crime Scene 3. Its not a drama i know but the whole Crime Scene series are soooo good! Haven't got around to watching CS3 yet but CS2 is undoubtedly one of the best variety to come out in recent years. I'm willing to give season 3 cast a chance especially when there's my hubby Kim Ji Hoon in there (he was so adorable as a guest on CS2) but CS2 cast have a special place in my heart. Kong Jin Ho, God Dongmin, Jazz Park Jiyoon and Jangjin and Hani.. their chemistry was so good.

I also definitely recommend The Genius since we're on this topic. Its like the real life manifestation of Liar Game. I'm forever grateful to that show for introducing me to the wonders of my cutie Hong Jin Ho and sexy brain man Jang Dongmin

I'm in my drama slump nowadays. Not sure if its just me or the currently airing drama fail to awaken my inner drama goddess. But I really love Queen of Mystery. I really love our Ahjumma. She's smart and cute at the same time. Choi Kang Hee really play smartypants ahjumma role awesomely. With Detective Ha as an OTP, am i the only one hoping that Ahjumma will leave her husband and be lovey dovey with Detective Ha. They are super cute and the chemistry so on point I was hoping there are more than solving the mystery. TBH, I watch for the humor and OTP, while admitting that, it is slightly ridiculous that the Ahjumaa always one step ahead than a police. But who cares, my heart melt when detective Ha admitted that the Ahjumma was cute. Heeeeee.....

And KIM YOOO JOOOOOO in Father is strange is super annoying. Lee Yu Riii is scary eonnie. Beware Kim Yoo Joo. You die!

What i love and really enjoy about the liar and his lover is that, i could understand almost everyone's motives for taking whatever decision they made. And yes that includes Sejung's crazy obsession. Not commendable at all. But at that age, and the pressure she's under, and how much obsession she has over Chanyoung, in addition to her jealousy of Sorim.. I could see her way of thinking..

Or the CEOs. At first I thought CEO Yoo was just being jealous at Jinhyuk. But now that I watch more of her, I understand how really she just wanna keep her company and all subsidiaries in tact. And Jinhyuk's anxiety is also very much expected.

Yoona though, is just downright selfish and full of jealousy. But i guess quite a number of superstars are like that, tho since i have never been one, i cant tell lol..

Now, may I just add how charming Sihyun is!!! I went to google him yesterday, and found that he was born in..... 1994....

HE'S EVEN YOUNGER THAN LEE HYUNWOO!!

there goes my crush ;_;

Man to Man: This is one where the "flashback" method may have served as a better introduction. I would have preferred they started with the introduction of the Bodyguard and his protectee and "family", give us some hilarity then back into who the Bodyguard is and how they got there. By the way, does anyone think that Kim Min Jung has a strong resemblance to Ariel Lin? (sausage lips - as Ariel once described herself?) Gone through 4 episodes and so far, the pacing is good, tightly shot and no meaningless filler subplots/characters (yeah.. SWDBS...talking about you)

Mystery Queen: Wishing they got here at Ep 4 rather than Ep 8. Tonally I am still finding the odd numbered episodes (usually when they're solving the current mystery) more engaging than the even numbered episodes (where the resolutions seem draggy and with very limited exposition).

The intrepid "Sherlock" is not quite focused yet, in my opinion, and although we can enjoy "what" she is doing with her "Watson" the "why" is still a muddle. I am hoping that they keep her "hyper rational" and emotionally shut-off - which would at least be somewhat consistent with someone who "acts through thought" like a good daughter in law and wife but cannot really "feel" like one (hopefully I am making my point clear) It probably explains why she acts the way she does with "Watson" - she is showing her true personality.

Still, we're through half the show and I have strong misgivings on how they can establish the main dramatic arc, bring it to a climax and resolve it. With puppy station Chief, Detective Squad, Seol-Ok's present home front and past mystery, legal office conflicts and Wan-Seung's melo love interest/past, there are a lot of ends to bring together and if they continue to want to focus on mysteries - something is probably going to be dropped.

TLAHL: the best part of this show for me is the different kinds of relationship shown - lovers, friends, father-son, bandmates, mentor-protégé, family etc - and how each are pushing each other along. The growth of the characters feels organic and no matter how you dont care for a person you just understand where their motivation is coming from. I hope that makes sense.

ManxMan: this show is quirky and fun to watch. There are just so much funny moments. I enjoyed the newer episodes compared to the pilot. But the best part for me is the bromance between UnGwang and Seolwoo, also the one between DongHyun and Seolwoo. I would love to see a scene when UnGwang and DongHyun would one-up each other and fight for Seolwoo.

My Secret Romance: I like Sung Hoon but I can't sit through an episode. Everyone is right about the cliches and cheesiness, I may just check it out another time.

Late to the party but thought I'd share what I am watching. I think I am the only person here watching Sister Is Alive (Band of Sisters), which I started merely to watch Lee Ji Hoon, who I loved in Mirror of the Witch, and so I now watch anything he is in these days. This show is a bit crazy but it has sucked me in. I've never watched a long drama before, so who knows if I'll stick with it. (I started Flower In Prison but gave it up after a couple of weeks because I just wasn't drawn in.) But this show has me looking for it each weekend, so we'll see. And I like Lee Ji Hoon's character, I'm just worried he's going to get all revengy and turn angsty bad guy like he did in LOTBS.

Also watching:
My Secret Romance - super silly but I laugh out often. The scene at the end of episode 6 where our lead couple is talking about the size of what is in the jewelry box and the animations that pop up - too funny!

Whisper - Still watching but not quite as invested as before. It just feels draggy to me.

TLAHL - ❤️❤️❤️ 'Nuff said

Mystery Queen - so quirky. And I still a, curious about the Seol Ok' hubby and their relationship.

Chicago Typewriter - love it but haven't watched this week's episodes yet.

Looking forward to Suspicious Partner and Fight My Way.

Perfect Wife: Jae Bok remains one of the best heroines I've encountered. And all the other female characters, excluding Eun Hee and her mom, are pretty admirable. Even dumb-dumb Nami, who managed to be smart enough in her last moments to implicate Eun Hee in her death.

Radiant Office: Another drama with great female characters. A kdrama office where none of the women are trying to tear another woman down? It is the men are who being petty. At the end of episode 14, I got the chills. I really could see Ho Won rising to become CEO of Hauline one day. I love Ji Na's public love declaration. And Suk-kyung trying to get Woo Jin woke about the bitter inequity that women face in the workplace.

Mystery Queen: I love our very odd duo so so so much! The investigating that looks like a date was hilarious. I'm really sad that we're already halfway through the series since it feels like we're just getting started. I like the pace but at this pace, it does feel like it should be a 24 episode drama. I do wish they would cut out Ji Won and Wan Seung's dad. Let's focus on the mysteries and not tiresome chaebols.

Chicago Typewriter: So intrigued by it. What happens when Se Joo and Jin Oh finish the story? When will Se Joo stop putting his foot in his mouth? What will be Gyun-woo's fate?

Father is Strange: Joong Hee has finally moved into the Byun household! I was a little disappointed in everyone for being so unaccepting of Joong Hee moving in. Hye Young is so badass!

Man to Man: I tried, but couldn't get into it. Similarly to the drama's predecessor, SWDBS, I find the story to be interesting on paper, but the execution is just off.

Decided to hold off on Whisper. I've fallen behind and with all the stress this week, wasn't in the mood for something heavy.

Real life has caught up on me lately, but that is a good thing because... I got to marathon Rebel episodes 23-26, and man, that was a good mini-marathon! Stuff is happening. Gil Dong is the most reluctant hero ever, but he is really a hero of the people, or the face of the people, or whatever you want to call him. I had to LOL at Yeonsangun asking him if Gil Dong was a lost descendant of the Goryeo Wangs, or an illegitimate noble's son with a grudge against the system. Of course he'd expect birth secrets, just like us viewers usually do. Not this time!

Same with Liar and his Lover. I caught up on episodes 10-12. I am not completely in love with it, mainly because as JB notes, they never let us hear the complete songs! I am practically a Crude Play fan who can't wait to see them play haha. And gah, the earworm is strong with this one. I've had PETER PAN in my head for days now. Overall an enjoyable watch, rooted in character interactions with each other.

Only watching these two. I have my eye on Man to Man and Radiant Office for later, but two dramas is the most I can handle. It's amazing how much more I actually exercised and slept when I stopped watching dramas for a while. XD

Hi @javabeans and @girlfriday! :) I can just imagine the mountain of to-dos you are facing right now because of the transition to this new amazeballs site. But I just want you to know that I really miss you writing recaps! Hope to have you back to recapping soon, but know that we appreciate all that you do to make this (kdrama)world a better place. :)

I really like Chicago Typewriter but I am not sure if I love the show or just Yoo Ah In´s style of acting that is so carelessly ambitious and sneakily alluring... This show is kind of like a drawing room treat for an eccentric secret click. It feels sort of posh.

Currently watching Rebel, Liar and his Lover, and Chicago Typewriter and just started Man to Man.

Ranking them in order of how soon I check out the next episode as

Chicago Typewriter = Liar and his Lover (I watch them raw)
Rebel
Man to Man
