Strong Woman Do Bong-soon: Episode 14

This episode left me completely in shambles, and I had to sit in a corner for a little while and regain my composure because I am not okay. I still can’t get over all the feeeeels that were inflicted onto me by our favorite pair. I love how they always, always emerge from their trials stronger and better than they were before, and more certain of their love for each other. I can’t promise tons of coherency in this recap because I was basically a tangle of emotion throughout, but I hope you cry, laugh, squee, and then somehow end up better for it.

Episode 14: “Prelude to the Battle”

We return to the chaos where the previous episode left off: Min-hyuk holds a fading Bong-soon and embraces her tightly, as she goes limp in his arms. Meanwhile, Gook-doo faces off with Jang-hyun, gun in hand. He fires a bullet that pierces through the glass and hits the kidnapper’s arm. Jang-hyun yelps in pain then steps on the gas and zooms out of the lot, but not before Gook-doo rolls out of harm’s way.

Gook-doo trails Jang-hyun closely by car as they race through the numerous winding roads. In a panic, Jang-hyun accidentally turns into the path of an oncoming car. He swerves right and flies off the side of the road, sliding downhill and flipping over into a small lake, as Gook-doo watches in helpless horror.

Sometime later, backup arrives to fish the car out of the water, but the crew still can’t find Jang-hyun’s body. Gook-doo stares thoughtfully at the water, and his team leader tells him to wipe that look off his face since the case is now finally closed.

Gook-doo gets a text from Min-hyuk, informing him that he is taking Bong-soon. He’s polite but somber in the voiceover of his message, and Gook-doo sighs.

Instead of bringing Bong-soon home, they relocate to Min-hyuk’s secret room. He watches over her as she sleeps with a worried expression in his eyes. Eventually he remembers to call Dad (who anxiously waits for his daughter to return) and notifies him that Bong-soon is with him and fast asleep. Dad picks up from the tone of Min-hyuk’s voice that something has happened.

Min-hyuk doesn’t deny it when asked, but promises that everything is fine now and offers to wake Bong-soon up so Dad can talk to her himself. Dad refuses then adds meaningfully that he trusts Min-hyuk.

Bong-ki joins Dad on the couch with a beer after the call, having overhead everything. He wonders aloud if Min-hyuk and Bong-soon are in a serious relationship, and Dad says that Min-hyuk seems like a good person. Bong-ki goes a step further and says that Min-hyuk is like a savior to their family.

Dad becomes pensive as he tells Bong-ki that since Bong-soon was young she always had to be vigilant about controlling her strength and he worries when Bong-soon isn’t home, since he’s afraid that she might attract trouble because of her strength. He’s constantly afraid that she’ll get hurt, and if not for Min-hyuk being with her today…the idea terrifies him, and he can’t complete the thought.

Dad’s honesty compels Bong-ki to divulge the reason why he decided to enroll in medical school. He explains that he wants to study their family genetics and understand why the women are born with their unusual strength. And for Bong-soon who only wants to live a normal life, he hopes he can help her in some way.

Heartbreakingly, Dad asks if Bong-soon can ever live a normal life, and Bong-ki answers back that it’ll be hard and that’s what worries him. He admits that he’s always worrying about his noona. Dad ruffles Bong-ki’s hair and says when he’s like this he seems more like the oppa, so Bong-ki smiles and replies, “I am the oppa,” which makes them laugh. Aww, these two.

Deep into the night, Bong-soon’s eyes flutter open, and she sees Min-hyuk curled up on the same couch facing her, just as he had so many episodes ago when she slept over at his house for the first time. But this time, instead of shock, the sight of him makes her well up with tears.

She reaches out to touch his face, but her hand hovers right above his cheek, before deciding against it, and withdrawing.

Bong-soon sits up to leave, but Min-hyuk, who has been awake all along, pulls her back down besides him. Her eyes widen in surprise and he whispers:

Min-hyuk: “Please look at me.”
Bong-soon: “I’m looking.”
Min-hyuk: “Please love me.”
Bong-soon: “I am in love with you.”
Min-hyuk: “You’re like a tiny peanut so I can keep you in my heart, but I don’t think I’m in your heart.”
Bong-soon: “You’re in there.”

They stare into each other’s eyes for a long moment, as tears streak across Bong-soon’s face, until Min-hyuk says finally, “I love you.” He then pulls her into his arms, and strokes her head as the turmoil of the day unleashes its tight grip over them. It’s going to be all right, guys. It’s all right now.

The next morning, Mom finds Bong-soon’s room empty and immediately breaks into the biggest smile ever. She hurries through the house to report her findings to the nearest family member and runs into Bong-ki. Already aware, Bong-ki tells Mom that Bong-soon spent the night with Min-hyuk but it seems like “something happened.”

Before Mom can badger him to clarify what he means, she’s interrupted by a call from Kyung-shim. Mom remarks on how she’s hasn’t seen of heard from Kyung-shim in a while, and Kyung-shim, who can barely get out a word, breaks down and sobs into the phone to Mom’s confusion.

Min-hyuk wakes up alone and immediately seeks out Bong-soon. She hasn’t gotten far though, and sits in the kitchen deep in thought. She picks up an apple and tries to make her signature hand-squeezed apple juice, but is unable to produce a single drop.

Min-hyuk witnesses the scene, and Bong-soon hurries to hide her weakness when she notices him. She asks how Kyung-shim is doing and Min-hyuk assures her that her friend is fine and had refused to stay at the hospital, so she’ll go to the Do house once she finishes with her treatment. Bong-soon is relieved, and Min-hyuk looks down at the apple in her hand then starts to ask a question, but after looking into her eyes, he reconsiders and chooses instead to scold her for not listening to him.

He complains that he specifically told her not to race off and meet with Jang-hyun alone, and he warns that he’s really angry, but is holding back his rage. She apologizes then says that she just wants to go home to see Kyung-shim.

He understands and then immediately cuts up an apple and symbolically juices it for her with a juicer. (That’s the sweetest thing everrrrr. Great, now I’m crying.) Then he hands her the glass and repeats what she had said to him when she made it for him, “Eating an apple in the morning keeps you healthy. That’s what you told me.”

Elsewhere, Gook-doo struggles to write up his report for Jang-hyun’s accidental death and the police still can’t find his body. His team leader voices his suspicions to Gook-doo about the story Kyung-shim told him of how Min-hyuk rescued her. Gook-doo avoids answering and promises that he’ll take care of it.

At the Do house, Mom is shocked that Bong-soon kept quiet about Kyung-shim’s kidnapping. Bong-ki defends Bong-soon and states that the kidnapper threatened to kill Kyung-shim if Bong-soon had reported it to the police. Kyung-shim arrives and immediately Mom pulls her into her arms where she cries.

After she calms down, Mom worries that Kyung-shim lost too much weight and insists on making her some nourishing soup.

Min-hyuk drops Bong-soon off at her house, but before she leaves she asks about that innocent man she injured when she protected Kyung-shim from danger. Min-hyuk says that he’ll be fine, and tells her not to worry because he’ll take care of it, and to focus only on Kyung-shim. She takes his word for it and jumps out, so he casually adds, “You should worry about me a little too!” She smiles, then agrees.

Inside, Bong-soon tearfully reunites with Kyung-shim. She frets over her friend and touches her injured face, asking how she is and if she was afraid. Kyung-shim nods in response to Bong-soon’s questions between sobs, but reassures her that she’s mentally strong. Bong-soon sweetly explains how she was going to buy Kyung-shim this dress she’s wanted, and they embrace as they weep.

Kyung-shim asks if Bong-soon is okay and inquires after her strength, and is alarmed to hear that Bong-soon’s strength disappeared. Bong-soon confesses that she had always wished that she didn’t have her powers but now that they’re gone, she feels strange inside. She shakes it off and states that nothing matters as long as Kyung-shim is safe.

Down at the breakfast table, the family watches Kyung-shim take her first bite before Mom begins berating Bong-soon for failing to tell them that Kyung-shim was in danger. She slaps Bong-soon hard on the back as she normally does, but now those blows actually hurt, and Bong-soon shouts at Mom, then flees from the table in annoyance.

Mom is stunned by Bong-soon’s outburst, and struggles to understand what she did so wrong. So Kyung-shim delivers the big news, and everyone becomes quiet as they watch Bong-soon who hangs her head in shame in the other room.

After sending Kyung-shim off safely in her police escort to Busan, Mom sits Bong-soon down for a chat. She tells her daughter that it’s okay that she lost her powers, and now she can live like everyone else. She says that at first it will be an adjustment and she’ll feel empty for a little while, but it’ll pass. Mom explains that the first thing she did when she lost her strength was to start lifting weights, beginning from the lightest and increasing slowly over time.

Mom describes that after losing her strength she continued on with her life and pretended that she was fine, and so can Bong-soon.

Tenderly, Mom promises that from now on she’ll take good care of Bong-soon. She reveals that the reason she cared so much for only Bong-ki all this time is because all the women in their family took the strength, leaving the men with little. And so she felt bad for Bong-ki, who always fell ill as a child. Wahhh, why do I keep crying today?

However, now Mom says she’ll care for Bong-soon too. Bong-soon is moved by Mom’s vow, only for Mom to immediately ask about how her sleepover at Min-hyuk’s was, returning to her regular self.

On her way to work, Bong-soon is knocked over by an overly eager passenger who hurries to get on the bus. She falls to the ground and thinks to herself:

“I’m not special anymore. From now on, I have to living like a normal person. Now, I can’t go out late at night freely. Now, I can’t protect other people. I can’t help people the way I used to help them. I, Do Bong-soon, have truly become an ordinary person.”

She walks into AinSoft and sees the large poster of the female warrior character from the Chronicles of Albertan and salutes it as if to say goodbye.

She enters their office and after staring at Min-hyuk’s empty desk, she heads to her seat and settles in. She thinks of what Mom had said about continuing on with her life after she lost her powers and pretending like she was fine. She repeats Mom’s words to herself like a mantra and gets to work on her Super Bong-soon game. Oh cute, she draws in a key-shaped necklace like the one she received from Min-hyuk.

She gets a text from Min-hyuk who lets her know that the innocent man she injured is well on his way to recovery, and she exhales in relief.

Still enraged by her chopstick-bracelet stunt, Dong-pyung orders Bong-soon to retrieve ten more boxes of paper so he can expose her. He corrals Min-hyuk and Secretary Gong to show them what a freak Bong-soon is (unaware that his audience is pretty familiar with Bong-soon’s quirk), but when they poke their heads into the supply room, Bong-soon is stacking boxes one at a time.

Secretary Gong chides Dong-pyung for harassing Bong-soon, while Min-hyuk pulls her from the room, after watching her with anxious eyes.

He takes her to the roof to ask why she came to work when he told her to rest. She explains that Kyung-shim went back to Busan, so she didn’t have any reason to stay home. Now that Kyung-shim is safely home and Jang-hyun is dead, Min-hyuk expresses his desire to go on dates like a normal couple.

He complains that because his girlfriend is so special, it’s been difficult to schedule dates with her. She answers quietly that she isn’t special anymore, and he replies that he knows. He leans over, places his hands on her shoulders, and asks if she’s doing okay. She admits truthfully that she isn’t fine, but her Mom promised her that it would get better with time, so she puts on a brave face and smiles.

Min-hyuk pats her head and says that he doesn’t care if she’s special or not, because all he wants is for her to be happy. He gallantly offers to move all the heavy stuff and open all the jam lids, then even tells her to “trust this oppa.” She sneers at his usage of “oppa,” and reveals that she knows he’s the same age as her. He explodes in mock outrage at Gook-doo for exposing him, and says, “That’s why you can’t trust the police!” Hee.

Turns out she didn’t actually know, but she just guessed, and is amazed that they are actually the same age. After being duped, Min-hyuk insists that based on maturity levels he’s the oppa anyway, but Bong-soon can’t hear him and immediately begins using banmal.

Flabbergasted, Min-hyuk says, “Go ahead!” then begins walking away. With his back turned to her, she calls out to him by his first name as if they are close friends and he can’t suppress his giant smile. He pretends to be angry and chases her around as she calls out to him using his first name and a shortened, more friendly version of his title, but his big, goofy smile gives him away.

Mom and her girls meet at the walnut shop to grumble about the greenlighting of the redevelopment despite their protests. One of the ladies regrets not paying off the financial backer of Boss Tak’s construction group (which she implies is “that handsome CEO’s company”). And Mom regrets curing Boss Tak with the poop wine, but then suggests they try to win over him over to their side.

Gook-doo’s Mom enters the shop as they’re scheming, and orders some walnuts to make walnut porridge for Gook-doo. Mom regretfully informs Gook-doo’s mother that their shop will no longer sell their products to her. Dad jumps in to veto Mom’s edict and bravely proclaims that he’s the owner, then accuses Mom of never doing any actual work, but scrambles away in fear when Mom approaches.

As Min-hyuk gives Bong-soon some notes on her design for the villain in her game, they both wonder where they’ve seen that character’s face before. Then when Secretary Gong enters the office, they both gasp at the uncanny resemblance.

Bong-soon and Min-hyuk depart on their first normal date, and pick up some PPL chocolates. Min-hyuk opens his mouth for a bite, but Bong-soon playfully eats it instead at the last second. She offers him a second piece, but he isn’t appeased, so as penance he takes a kiss first before gobbling up the tasty morsel.

Down at the construction site, Boss Tak and his boys celebrate winning the redevelopment grant. Nizamuddin calls Jaws for their jjimjilbang trip, and surprisingly Boss Tak suggests they all go.

They lounge around in shorts and Boss Tak asks Jaws for the latest on Bong-soon, who reports that Bong-soon and Min-hyuk are now an item. Boss Tak expresses his shock and muses cryptically that Min-hyuk must be having a “difficult” time. Nizamuddin suddenly sits up and orders Jaws to scratch his back because the water at the jjimjilbang makes his skin atrophy flare up.

Jaws complies using his finger brace, and when he lifts up the monk’s shirt he’s shocked to see a pen drawing of a map on the monk’s back which says that Nizamuddin is actually from a remote island off the coast of Korea and not India.

The cops find Jang-hyun’s jacket on the shore of the lake, but still no body. One detective asserts that based on the height from where Jang-hyun’s car fell, there shouldn’t be a chance of survival. The team leader isn’t too concerned by the missing body, but Gook-doo can’t shake his suspicion that something is amiss.

After their disagreement at the walnut shop, Mom declares that she wants a divorce from Dad. Dad asks if she’s sure she won’t regret it and she tells him to go live with Gook-doo’s mom since he likes her so much. Bong-soon returns home at that moment and tries to break up their fighting.

Mom pushes her out of the way like nothing, and Bong-soon falls to the floor. Alarmed, Mom and Dad pause their bickering long enough to check on their daughter before using it as a reason to start fighting again.

Bong-soon sits alone in her room and looks up at her cabinet of strength booklets. She takes out her book filled only with empty pages and thinks that she won’t need to write in it now.

Min-hyuk texts her to remind her about their picnic date tomorrow, so the next morning she packs an elaborate lunchbox and goes through her entire wardrobe, searching for the right outfit.

After she’s ready, she steps outside in a pretty purple dress, and Min-hyuk gasps at her beauty. At the park, they bask in the sun and read manhwa together, totally in love. Bong-soon unveils her super-sized lunchbox, but is disappointed when the heart she made using peas has moved out of alignment.

Min-hyuk calls himself an expert at hearts (aww) and fixes it for her, he compliments her on her stellar cooking skills, and even applauds, but then jokes that he found a fish bone.

Elsewhere, a still very much alive Jang-hyun limps into a house while clutching his injured shoulder, and then he reads up on his new target: Min-hyuk. He snips off his long locks, and we flash back and see how after his car hit the water, he escaped from drowning and quickly left the scene.

Gook-doo calls Bong-soon to meet up since they haven’t seen each other in a while, and checks to see if she’s okay. She agrees, but when she hangs up, she accidentally knocks over a glass cup which shatters as it hits the ground.

Oh no! Jang-hyun goes to AinSoft dressed in a suit and pretends to be the reporter who wrote a recent article on Min-hyuk. Thankfully, Min-hyuk is too busy to meet with the fake reporter, and so Jang-hyun asks to wait inside, but is refused. Jang-hyun continues to insist, until finally he is permitted through. Crap, crap.

As he walks to the elevator, he passes Gook-doo on his way to meet with Bong-soon. They don’t recognize each other at first, but then Gook-doo stops in his tracks, turns around, and calls out to Jang-hyun. Yessss!

Gook-doo grabs Jang-hyun and flips him to the ground, but Jang-hyun slips into an open elevator and seizes a female employee, then threatens to cut her with the ID tag hanging around her neck if Gook-doo approaches. Okay, I’m sorry but just let him cut her! It’s an ID, she’s not going to die, right? Ahem, maybe I should check my priorities.

Thinking fast, Gook-doo calls Min-hyuk to tell him that Jang-hyun is on the premises and he needs to order all building exits closed.

An announcement is made to the entire building, warning of the lockdown and asking all to report any suspicious persons. Min-hyuk heads back to his office to check on Bong-soon, and lets her know that Jang-hyun has appeared again.

She isn’t surprised, but she is worried. Then suddenly Jang-hyun’s voice comes on the building’s PA system. His message is for Min-hyuk, inviting the CEO to play a game with him. The time limit is fifteen minutes, and in those fifteen minutes if Min-hyuk can’t catch him, then he’ll blow up the building. Jang-hyun’s crazed laugh rings through the halls as the game begins.

Min-hyuk tasks Secretary Gong with watching over Bong-soon, and before Min-hyuk leaves, she begs him to stay safe. He squeezes her hand and tells her not to worry, then sets a timer and runs.

Gook-doo and Min-hyuk meet up at the broadcasting room. Min-hyuk announces to his employees that the threat is real and everyone needs to evacuate the building.

When Gook-doo asks what Min-hyuk intends to do, he voices his intention to win the game. Gook-doo asks where Bong-soon is, then runs off to be with her. That’s exactly where he needed to be at that moment, because Jang-hyun comes and knocks Secretary Gong out, then takes Bong-soon.

Min-hyuk orders all the power off in the building, then makes his way through the darkened halls. Jang-hyun takes Bong-soon to the roof and chains her to a large pipe, baiting Bong-soon to break free and use her strength like she did before. Then he beats her until she passes out. Grrrrr! I’m so tired of his shit.

Gook-doo reports Bong-soon’s kidnapping to Min-hyuk after he finds Secretary Gong unconscious on the floor. Min-hyuk tracks Bong-soon’s location and races for the rooftop, where Jang-hyun reminds an unconscious Bong-soon that she promised to marry him. And as punishment for breaking her promise, she dies.

Jang-hyun fastens his bomb to Bong-soon and chains the door handles to lock her inside, growling to himself, “This is really the end,” just as he hears Min-hyuk calling out for Bong-soon nearby.

Jang-hyun escapes and nearly walks right into Gook-doo’s path, but instead Gook-doo finds a black beeping box with green lights, which seems like another bomb.

Min-hyuk finds the chained door and desperately bangs against it, screaming for Bong-soon to answer if she’s in there. Bong-soon comes to and hears Min-hyuk calling to her, and begs him to leave while there’s still time. Oh, Bong-bong. I can’t watch this.

Meanwhile, the timer on Gook-doo’s bomb expires, but it’s a dummy.

Jang-hyun makes his way through the crowd of people outside and smirks, crowning himself the winner of the game.

After failing to break open the door, Min-hyuk slumps against it, his hand bloodied from his attempts to break it open. He says in response to Bong-soon’s pleas for him to leave, “Where would I go? I’m not going to leave you alone. Let’s leave together.” I have no more tears to give! Stop it!

He tries to stay strong for them and tells her not to cry, as tears fill his eyes. He complains that she never listens to him, as she screams for him to get away. But he doesn’t know how to listen either and says, “I won’t ever leave you alone. I’m not leaving. I’ll stay next to you. Don’t be scared. Do you understand?”

With less than ten seconds left, Bong-soon begins praying to anyone that is listening and shouts, “Please help me save that person!”

From her room, her strength book lights up, and a large light beam shoots down from the sky illuminating over her, returning her strength. YES!!

She breaks through her binds, kicks open the door and flings the bomb high into the sky where it explodes like a series of fireworks. Min-hyuk embraces Bong-soon and they hold each other reeling, as the orange light blazes through the black night.

COMMENTS

Sometimes I find the filler and the circular plot points tiresome, but this episode just burned all of that away and left me with something so pure and lovely at the end. Min-hyuk and Bong-soon’s relationship is the heart and the almost blindingly bright spot of this show, so I don’t care if I have to watch Boss Tak wax poetic about literal shit for half the episode if the other half is as emotionally vivid and moving as those last ten minutes were. This show lives and dies on the strength of our Romeo and Juliet, and today I feel like it’s as strong as Bong-soon is — super-powered or otherwise.

I wasn’t surprised that Bong-soon got her powers back right in the nick of time, but it was so satisfying when she did. It didn’t feel contrived to me at all. I felt it was right and true that she lost her powers saving someone she loved, and regained them for nearly the same reasons. When she reflected on how her life would now be different because she no longer had her strength, the majority of her reasons were because she wouldn’t be able to help anyone anymore. In her case, her punishment from the gods turned out to be a question, asking her what this power that she never wanted means to her.

We also had some deeply moving moments between the Do family members. I loved seeing Bong-ki and Dad discuss how much they care for Bong-soon, even though they may never say it directly to her. I’m glad that Mom stepped up to be there for Bong-soon at a time when only she could understand what Bong-soon was going through. I didn’t even realize how much I was waiting for that moment between mother and daughter until it happened and I was a crying mess.

I liked that the show didn’t play Bong-soon’s loss of strength for comedy. The mood of the episode was almost solemn and contemplative. Even Min-hyuk’s modern-Hercules moment when he juiced her apple was so wonderfully done. It was a quiet moment that he did on instinct. It was his way to tell her that you don’t have be anything but who are you right now, you don’t even have to be same person you were yesterday, and I’ll love you. I love that the only person in this show who tried to diminish Bong-soon for not having her strength was the biggest asshat in the universe, Jang-hyun. Everyone else, from Mom to Bong-ki, even Gook-do, and of course Min-hyuk didn’t act like she was weak—just normal. They stepped in to be beside her when she felt vulnerable, and revealed to us how deeply she matters to them. So it make sense to me that her gift is something she gives to them, and that it comes and goes based on her burning desire to protect them.

Min-hyuk and Bong-soon showed so much maturity in this episode and I feel like they’ve come so far in terms of navigating the confusion and loneliness they’ve felt all their lives, and became better and stronger people after confronting those feelings. In each other they’ve built something solid and lasting, and I’m so grateful for it. I love that their relationship is about being vulnerable and brave, honest and thoughtful. And above all, strong and weak, but never alone.

Thanks for the recap! I've enjoyed all of the episodes but didn't think the same show that features a gangster going on a poop-inspired journey of enlightenment could turn me into such a sobbing mess. And gosh did it ever haha. Those last few scenes were so intense!! It just broke my heart when Bong-soon realized the bomb was there but all she could think about was saving Min-hyuk, and same with him refusing to ever leave her alone. I love love love all their cute n' fluffy scenes, and then you have moments like when they were on sofa and with the juice that are quieter but so heartwarming <3 Gotta say I really love Bong-soon's dad and brother too. Their scene together was really nice and I love how much her dad cares about her. And I really liked how they handled her losing and regaining her powers in both of this weekend's episodes. I don't think it so much had to do with accidentally hurting the guy while saving Kyung-shim. I think it was more because she was being reckless? with them. I don't know if that's really the word I want to use, but she was so intent on doing everything by herself, and I understand her reasons since she's used to that, and she didn't want Min-hyuk getting hurt again and it was a desperate situation, but I think that factored into the powers being taken away. And though she's grown more accepting of them, it wasn't until this ep that she really embraced her powers as the special gift that they are. Anyway, what a great episode!

I feel you've got a point. I've been wondering if Bong Soon had (understandably) been taking her strength for granted. She always knew she could help and she wanted to help if she could do so without being her power being found out. Now we will see if she can truly accept herself with her power and still come out to help with less fear of exposure.

I've liked how the show has juxtaposed her attitude towards the way strength (and therefore authority) is used against that of her mum, the thugs and bullies, and the mad kidnapper, so that even without physical strength, she was always stronger than the lot of them.

This is one of my favorite episodes so far!

It was heartbreaking yet emotionally satisfying. I loved the couch scene and how both of them verbalized their feelings for each other. It was heartwrenching to see Bong Soon and Min Hyuk shedding a tear (or two) after they conveyed how much they really love one another. Plus that morning-after scene where Min Hyuk juiced an apple for her... it was his way of saying I am here for you and will love and protect you whatever happens.

Plus that bomb scene where he refused to leave her alone and was willing to die along with her - argh! it ripped my heart to see it happen but it made them stronger as a couple. It'll be satisfying to witness Min Hyuk and Bong Soon both realizing just how deep their feelings for each other have grown since they started their romance.

I also loved Bong Soon's family scenes where her mother comforted her and her father eavesdropped on the conversation. That mother-daughter moment was a touching scene and helped us, the viewers, understand why mom has been treating her that way. Also, when Bong Soon's dad and twin brother talked about her difficulties living a normal life and why Bong Ki decided to become a doctor... sigh!... - it made me love the Do family even more!

I can't wait to see what happens to our beloved couple and other characters in the drama's final two episodes. OMG!!! It's their finale week!!! I'll miss seeing them on screen... sniff.. sniff.

Min hyuk: "I didn't know it was this soft!" He stole a peck and ate the chocolate... but why do I keep wishing that line was in reference to her lips and not Royce hehehe

Knowing Min-hyuk, he probably meant both! I love that chocolate scene, first when he pouted after Bong-soon denied him the chocolate, then when he stole the kiss. Damn, Min-hyuk, you're smooth.

I'm betting that he is really referring to her lips 85% and 15% to chocolate. Uri Min Min is a pro when it comes to double meaning.

That scene is quite sweet. It seems so natural for him to swoop in for the kiss.

Thanks for the recap, murasakimi!

Dang!! How good is this crook?! Even after the whole while car chase, he ends up in the waters?! Of course he's not dead yet! He only has an arm injury!! Feeling so bad and frustrated for GD!! Loved that scene of him in his car and those glistening tears. Really made me feel for him.

I'm glad BS is safe for now and perfect man/bf MH actually remembers to give Dad a ring albeit a little late and the man is so worried about his beloved daughter. I really like Dad's trust in MH and how he vocally expresses that, just like he did when they had that cherish BS talk.

Bless BK for the reason he pursued medicine. He does seem more like an oppa to BS.

Loved the touching convo on the couch between BS and MH. I hope MH realizes that BS does care for him deeply despite not expressing that often with MH doing most of the confessing.

Reeeally loved how MH produced the apple juice the way an average person would do so normally to show BS that it's OK. Nothing is out of the ordinary and she doesn't need to conceal the fact that her strength is gone. He's not gonna change the way he feels and acts.

Well, looks like Mom finally decides to be Mom. It was nice to see her having a sit-down with BS since she's been through the whole ordeal herself before. And finally, she addresses BS's previous questions about BK being the one more tenderly cared for while they grew up. I hope this is the start of a closer relationship between Mom and BS no matter what happens later on.

I think BS is gonna need some time to get used to this normal version of herself. She's probably feeling strange, as most of us would when what we pray for actually happens, but somehow it doesn't feel quite the way we'd hoped... I'm sure BS will get through this internal conflict and not remain in the dumps.

LOL at MH who gave himself away at being the same age as BS!! Loved the way he reassured BS and made sure that she was feeling OK. At least one thing is clear--his love for her is as steadfast as ever, and now he can go on more dates with her like normal couples would. XD

Haha! PPL chocolates are actually useful!! Love the cute stolen kiss and cheeky MH! Enjoyed the whole picnic scene. These two are just adorable and I'm glad they're finally going on some regular dates without interruptions and unexpected events.

Dang it! Creeper is back. Knew that smartiepants would be targeting MH to get to BS (and vice versa). Glad that GD spotted him immediately. But man, Creeper is just too fast!! I knew it was gonna be a battle between him and CEO. He probably wants to win against someone who can actually match his level of intelligence and technical prowess.

Nooo... CEO, you can't leave BS with Secretary Gong! You know who's after her!! Argh!! Of course Creeper goes straight for her and no one is at all suspicious by the sole person not exiting the building! Grrr!! How dare this creep chain BS to the...

How dare this creep chain BS to the pipes and beat her like that?! *shakes fist*

I'm on the edge of my seat now... Thank goodness GD's bomb was a fake. But the whole music box thing... Is this supposed to reference the last ep when the first victim mentioned always hearing the sound of a music box? Is this creep thinking the roof is BS's holding cell?? *shudders* Man, I know BS is gonna get out of this, but I can't help but feel so worried with the ticking bomb strapped to her tiny body, and MH/GD/Secretary Gong still inside the building!!

Whew!!! Yesssss!! BS's strength returns!! The power gods have heard her plea for her beloved!! That was too close for comfort. Throughout her scenes with MH, my heart was sobbing along at this race of time. Love love love MH with his words to BS. So glad they're both OK at the end.

"When she reflected on how her life would now be different because she no longer had her strength, the majority of her reasons were because she wouldn’t be able to help anyone anymore. In her case, her punishment from the gods turned out to be a question, asking her what this power that she never wanted means to her."

Yes!! I love your insight on this. She's always wanted to just help people all along, and that's what made her feel so down when she no longer had her power. She never used it for selfish reasons. I like how this was a reflection for her.

Loved the way you ended the recap. Definitely such a lovely couple and one can't help but root for them to be together while winning against evil. Their honesty and devotion as well as consideration are so refreshing to see. One more week left!!

This drama follows the rule where the bad guy can fall off cliffs after being shot, and instead of being drowned or crushed, emerges stronger in the last but 1 or 2 episodes of the show. The 'worst offender show' was Doctor Stranger, where not only the bad guys but anyone who fell off high places came back just fine.

I laughed a little more than I should when the fireworks came out 😂 But otherwise a realllyyyyy great episode! The last 10 minutes was so intense I couldn't breathe!! And idk guys but I'm really digging Jang Hyun's new look altho I still want that creepy psychopath to die 😩😡 and can we talk about how Guk Doo finally did something right as a police officer when he identified Jang Hyun with just one glance? You finally doing your job hun!
AHHHH AND of course the best thing in this show is our Min-min & Bong-bong couple 😍 I just love how supportive and mature their relationship has progressed throughout the show! I feel like we got a lot more depth from both of them and go to see the extent of how much they really love each other. And idk they make my heart flutter but I want to cry at the same time too 😭😭😭 I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! They're really turning out to be my fave 2017 couple and prolly one of my fave couples of all time too 😭 I'm going to be legitly so sad when this show ends 😭 But at the same time I just CANNOT wait for next week!!!!

Loved the Min-hyuk and Bong-soon moments cause I love them and I did like the character development the lose of her powers brought to Bong-soon, I'm also glad she got it back but I still think that, from the script angle, the storyline, the justifications, the lose and regain of her powers are nonsensical.

This episode was EXCELLENT! Bong Bong & Min Min are so meant to be with each other. Who wouldn't fall in love with someone who loves you for being you & would even be willing to die rather than save himself & leave you? Min Hyuk truly sets the bar high on how boyfriends should treat their girlfriends. He's the best of the best!

On a side note, I hope Bong Ki ends up with another girl preferably with Kyung Shim rather than Hee Ji. I just don't like how Hee Ji was aware of her feelings, had romantic intentions & made moves towards Bong Ki while she was in a relationship with Gook Du.

This episode was a lot better than ep 13, because Bong Soon and Min Hyuk are back together... that last scene was very emotional, although I agree with some posters that Min Hyuk seemed a bit out of character these two eps, because he's not the type to just stand back and let things happen. I also hoped that they would leave Bong Soon without her power for a bit longer, because it would've allowed Bong Soon to experience life the way a real woman would experience it. I wanted her to also learn that strength comes in all forms, and not just physical strength, but I guess the show won't go for any depth. Anyways I am glad she got her power back when she did, and I laughed out loud when the fireworks started in the sky LOL. I like that this show can take me from being teary to being giddy in a few minutes.

While this show is not perfect, Min Hyuk and Bong Soon are the highlights of this drama! I look forward to Min Hyuk (hopefully) taking down the villain. The villain is really one demented individual, and he needs to go down.

Bong Bong and Min Min are definitely the highlight of my week. I've been enjoying Bong Soon's journey of self discovery because it really proves the point that what you make of your circumstances is how you frame it. Depending on whether you view superpower strength as a curse or a gift will circumscribe the realm of possibility. I'm looking forward to Bong Soon exhibiting greater confidence and pride in her familial gift in the final week!

P.S. Great recap, but I my inner pathologist cringed at a minor detail: skin atrophy and skin atopy/ atopic dermatitis are completely separate issues.

I might be in the minority here, but I am so over this show...

I totally love DBS and Min-hyuk (steal my heart), but god the plot of this show goes from 0 to 100 so quick I got whiplash.

I don't get why our kidnapper is so obsessed with Bong-soon, and then suddenly become obsessed with "playing a game" with Min-hyuk (omg he's a game designer, let's make some psychological obstacle about that). He seems more like a prop that the writers use to move the plot forward than a interesting concrete villain. Why is he so obsessed with Blackbeard and his 7 wives?? Why does he want to kidnap people? Considering how much the writers feature him, wouldn't it be nice to provide any backstory. You can even cut out the ridiculous storyline with Boss Taek (why does this exist? WHY?) Did anyone else think that this "game" plot came out of nowhere?

And WHY WHY WHY is this police force so stupid? I mean, they've messed up like 5 times trying to catch this guy and they won't even search for a body? I get that they are k-drama police, but this is literally verging on deliberate ignorance.

I can just always tell which characters are written well because I tend to really like them (as characters, not necessarily as people), and the only ones I've liked are DBS and my baby Min-hyuk.

I guess I'm going to have to wait until someone cuts together all of the DBS and Min-hyuk scenes so I can only watch that...

Joining you. At this point, I'm really just watching it for our two leads, whom I adore. Everything else is just getting so ridiculous that it's unbelievable, even for a story like this. It's like the writer sets up certain premises and then breaks them in order to make something happen for the plot. For me, as the story goes on it only highlights the weakness of the writing on a story level. There was definitely a lost opportunity in making this villain a more compelling and fully realized human, which I think could have helped that part of the story. I'm still hoping that the writers have a plan for using the gangsters & the high school kids in the end, because otherwise...why!?

I really appreciated the somewhat fast paced chase through the building, though I honestly want to know - how many more times can KJH give GD the slip? When will GD ever snag him?

Ok first things first: MH's bloody handprints, BS's frantic screaming for him to leave and for someone to help her save him... Ugh. My heart. It hurt so much for the two of them. And then... Who approved that bomb-fireworks ending? I was on the edge of my seat, my heart hurting... and then I just ended up laughing my head off. I mean... I get it... Superwoman BS returns to save the day! But did we really need... fireworks? I was already slightly cringing at the light shining from the heavens.

1) I'd just hoped that BS would do something more than just a meagre "I'm sorry". Given that this was her second time ignoring his pleas not to do things alone, a "sorry" doesn't quite cut it for me. "Sorry" just isn't... sincere.

2) And in another episode of Perfect Man Min Hyuk: I think MH didn't want to get angry at her because it would drag out an unnecessary conflict, especially when she was still traumatized over losing her powers, so he let it go. I just don't want this to be a relationship where he's always the one giving. I just feel like he would forgive her for anything - just like I'd forgive this show for anything because of MH.

3) Thumbs UP for BS's confession scene on the sofa. (Also, flashback to earlier episodes where she woke up to his face and practically kicked him off the sofa, hah!). It was an emotionally charged scene that I really liked. MH has probably felt insecure this whole while, and having her voice out that she really does have him in her heart was all sorts of warm and fuzzy.

4) I like the portrayal of her realization that she's alway wanted to lose her powers, but didn't quite realize how much she had been using it as a crutch to get by her daily life. Now that it's gone, she's only just discovered how much she'd used/relied on it in the past. I also like the scene where Mom told her it was going to be ok. It was heartwarming. Speaking of heartwarming family scenes, Dad and BK really killed it at the start too.

5) Cute scenes: I don't need to say more, because obviously I loved them.

The light shining from the heavens reminded me of Scarlet Heart and the eclipse. I liked the sofa scene too, I don't think a kiss would have been appropriate, the hug was way better, I like how he pulled her in slowly and kinda drew her in, breathed her in, with his whole body. I also liked that she missed her old strength even though she had always wanted to be like everybody else - that was very real.

BS, you need to save the lonely prince, remember!

Lezah, everybody has been talking about the fireworks and i dont get it.
The first explosion felt like a real bomb. I watched the scene twice and yes, after that it was fireworks.
People laugh about it because it was not a real bomb?
Even if that was the case, they were so attached to her body, that she would have died anyway... in my country, in christmas, there are always reports of people dying over fireworks...
Now... even if HJ tied on her real fireworks, what was the intention?
?.....
Finally, could it be the producing of the drama is so cheap, they used fireworks to resemble a bomb, and that is the reason why everybody is laughing???

IMO, people (including me) are laughing because it seems like a ridiculous thing to insert into the scene. Like, an explosion in the sky would have been fine, but to put fireworks exploding afterward makes it almost comical (I think because fireworks are usually used in a celebratory manner?). It looks like a badly done CG effect, rather than real fireworks. And even if it were real fireworks - what would be the point? It seemed like a grave scenario until the fireworks started - then it became something comical! That's IMO!

Actually it's interesting that you mention that in your country people die because of fireworks. Fireworks are very, very controlled in my country (only during National Day and New Year's), so I've never heard of that happening before.

I live in Germany but i come from Venezuela in South America. There is chaos. They could make a korean drama out of our problems down there and people would laughed and cry at the same time.... LOL???.... In my childhood i remember even cases of peope who died or was badly hurt due to a frozen egg (they used to throw each other's eggs on carnival. I hated it), and few very stupid ones thought frozzen would be better.... nowadays is impossible because there nothing more expensive than food and there are even some people or children dying of hunger..?... ..... coming back to our story, yes. I would laugh as well (ironically), because it is so out of the place with the emotional impact of them thinking they would die, and even BS recovering her powers.
It actually makes me angry?... but we have to get over it. LOL

I just bought Royce after watching this episode. too bad there was no free PHS. kkkkk

Anyway, I am so satisfied with this episode from the sweet romantic dates to the nerve wracking building infiltration from our resident (and hot) psycho (also handsome) villain. Can someone tell me if I'm the only who was actually a little ok when BS lost her powers? I mean she had to learn a lesson or two for ignoring MH's words. She thought she could do everything (she could though) but... she at least had to understand that he's only worried about her. JH even brought a gun! Could her strength actually stop a bullet? If JH was extra smart, he could have shot her sniper style -__- Oh well, in the end, she got her powers back. Wonder how and why? From her pure desire to protect MH? I could barely wait for next weekends.

You described Min Min and Bong Bong's relationship perfectly in the last paragraph! It takes me so long just to watch an episode because I keep rewinding their parts, they are too adorable!! Adorable, but realistic, which is appealing and refreshing.

I find myself getting extremely frustrated with the gang members' / Boss Tak / monk storyline each week. I thought their story would come full circle, and that perhaps they would help Bong Soon when she lost her powers somehow but, doesn't quite look like it. I get that they need fillers but Boss Tak and his peeps just don't fit in anymore. It feels disjointed, and even though they are funny, I find myself annoyed and fast forwarding past their scenes because it pulls me out of the story completely. I think I also get the comedic relief that the writers are trying to go for but it's just not working anymore. I would rather watch Bong Gi and Gook Do's ex's story explored more, or even some explanation to why crazy is crazy. Oh well. In a perfect world it would just be one whole hour of our lead couple...

Thanks for the recap. I started skipping half the show around ep 12 but this episode made me a believer again. I didn't skip any part even the other show aka the gangster show. We still have 2 more episodes to go so I want to believe that there's a reason why they keep showing boss Tak & his gang. I really love the way the show handled BS loss of strength. It's something everyone can relate to. How we all want something but when we finally get it, it's not as awesome as we thought it would be. I love how BS coped with the loss of her strength. It shows how strong she is mentally and emotionally to be able to function despite her loss. Sure she has her moments of grief but she didn't let it defeat her. I also love the Do family including mom. She's selfish, irrational and abusive but to me that's what makes her human. A mom who despite her weaknesses tries her best to raise her children to be good human beings and look how BS and Bongki turned out. Finally the OTP. That couch conversation is one of the best ever and yes to the Royce PPL. I've been waiting for that one haha.

I have no words. All I can say is that I did cry, I did laugh and a I most certainly did squee. I've spent so much emotional energy on this episode that I am essentially an empty gelatinous mess on my couch right now. I should call in sick to work tomorrow.

I love the OTP moments, I really do. They are cute beyond words.

But I have been skipping quite a lot of scenes cuz they are not needed at all. I mean how many fillers does this show need to make it till 16 episodes. There is not much in way of a story and I honestly believe that they could have done so much more. Perhaps 2 or 3 different villains in an episodic format would have been better. It would have then made sense for her to make a game based on all of her experiences.

And I literally cringe at all the 'NAMASTE' humour. It is NOT funny. I am okay with Koreans knowing nothing about India (its not like Indians in general know much about Korea either) other than curry (which frankly is the least interesting thing about India), but to go to the extent of trying to make fun of the culture with a weird fake guru who does nothing other than say Namaste in every scene is irritating. Would I go the the extent of calling it racist? Perhaps not. But it honestly puts me off.

Forgot to add- those fireworks? Did the villain stack a whole bunch of firecrackers to make a bomb? Pulled me out of the awesomeness of the scene and took it me to all those romantic confessions in kdramas or Japanese movies which take place in front of fireworks.

The spacing between paragraphs is not working any more and it might make reading long comments quite tough. Could this be resolved @mary?

My thoughts on this episode:

1. I can't believe how GD let the psycho get away with it again....the frustration of seeing him pointing the gun at psycho for like forever, giving psycho ample time to get into the car, change gears, smirk and drive...such a ridiculous and incomprehensible scene.

2. The bomb that exploded then morphed into pretty fireworks lighting up the sky....I was like what?????

3. The psycho gets into the building, and everybody's busy doing his own stuff, and for some weird reason, one weak, unarmed man, Secretary Gong, gets assigned to protect BS. I don't get it.

4. I fast forwarded all the gangster scenes....caught a glimpse of the monk in a sauna with the gangsters....please tell me I imagined that.

5. The Royce scene- was that scripted? The quick kiss looked so natural, I could have sworn BS's expression of total shock was genuine, as well as the dialogue that followed, MH saying, "It's soft" and she demanding, "You did that on purpose, didn't you" felt so natural, like the lines were ad-libbed.

5. I like the scene of BS lifting the box very much. For once, she's beaten and cowed, brought literally to her knees....she has been very arrogant with her display of strength and bullying the doppelganger so far, so I liked the humility of the new BS. I also loved the expression in Secretary Gong's eyes when he caught sight of her struggling, the compassion, the kindness, that filled those eyes was so heartwarming - he's a good man, Secretary Gong is. PHS's acting with his eyes was awesome too: MH's eyes as he stood there and watched her struggling, eyes filled with pain, like he's hurting so much to see her broken like this, and I loved how he kind of glided in so swiftly, so QUIETLY, behind the backs of the other two men, and led her away. I loved the contrast between the sound and fury of the squabbling, and the utter quietness and smoothness of MH's rescue.

6. I liked the scene of Absycho cutting his hair and whoa - those abs! I forgot to breathe. Are they real or glued on?

1. We need to keep count of how many times GD will let KJH give him the slip. 5. I also really liked how MH silently swooped in to bring her out. I think it really shows that he understands how vulnerable and empty she must be feeling, and he's silently helping her feel better. (Also, banmal on the rooftop? They're the cutest). 6. It seems like even villains these days have gotta have abs... LOL!

Now, when I see GD stalking in with that I-am-the-smartest-cop-in-the-drama-don't-mess-with-me look, I'm like, yawning, "Dude, do us all a favour, turn around and walk in the opposite direction. And keep walking."

Hah, but I guess I'll give GD some credit - he's the only one in the entire team who's actually got the smarts to figure out things for them. He may be bullheaded and a little rash, but at least his heart is in the right place. I guess he was already predicting that KJH might still be alive, but I do wish he hadn't shouted the guy's name out loud (way to startle and tipoff the criminal you're trying to catch). I know everyone here including me is totally in love with PHS and his acting skills, but I just gotta say that if it weren't for Jisoo, I might have given up on GD a long time ago! He does that fresh-faced, rash rookie cop well.

It was a rollercoaster ride this weekend! But i love how the show still give us the cute moment between our lovable couple. Those moments made me alive and able to wait for the final week!

But....
I tried to not think of it, but it still there.
This eps just showed that in dramaland:
1. Security guard
2. Police
3. Handphone
Are not working under very very very dangerous and crucial moment.

How comeeeee gook do not think of calling his fellows cops to ainsoftt???
How comeeeee the security guard just there, not come close to gook do when he fight with jang hyun, orrrrrrr look after their CEO!!
Heyyy, your CEO is thereeeee, inside the buildingg, with bomb inside!! Why are youu there? Not helping your boss looking for criminall??

Maybe the officemates think they are filming running man show in ainsoft building. So they just stay outside, doing nothing.

Sorry for the rant. But it annoys me during the last few minutes of this eps.

Beside that, i just loveee our min-min. And his gaze, aaarghhh i will need some time to move on after the final week :/

What's the point of the gangsters being this show anyways? It honestly annoys me to death how they keep showing them when they could honestly use that time to focus on the main story. Fillers....

Loved the episode. The first scene with the 2 of them just left me in a tangle of tears and giggles. Soon absolutely cute! These two are adorable. ?
I loved the father-son moment. It was a nice touch, same as having mom finally show some emotions towards BS. Also mom showing she loves dad was kind of needed.
The end also was so painful and emotional! Seeing MH with his hands covered in blood and BS sobbing so hard on the other side of the door was so painful! Both actors did an excellent job!!! I love the way she got her powers back. All to save the person she loves the most! Wonder how the final battle will turn out since I assume the crazy kidnapper now knows she got her power back. As no normal person could have thrown the bomb so far away. I think he will target MH, BS and GD all at once as they are his personal enemies and it would be nice to see them work together to defeat crazy guy.
