JYP brings the magic in new web drama
by tipsymocha
Clockwise from top left: GOT7’s Jinyoung, Yoon Park, 2PM’s Nickhun,
Shin Eun-soo, Ryu Seung-soo
On the heels of KBS’s Andante, JYP has announced they will also be producing a high school drama, but with a magical flair. Titled Magic School, the plot is reported to revolve around several youths at a, you guessed it, magic school (I’m assuming this school’s magic is more of the David Copperfield variety than, say, Hogwarts).
Among the ensemble cast are GOT7’s Jinyoung (Legend of the Blue Sea), Yoon Park (Introverted Boss), 2PM’s Nickhun (The Producers), Ryu Seung-soo (Beautiful Mind), and newbie actress Shin Eun-soo (Legend of the Blue Sea). Jinyoung’s character, Na-ra, is a college student who has never not been single (awwww, lol) and hopes to one day become a civil servant. Yoon Park is Jay, a star magician with a cold outer demeanor that hides a deep inner sadness (don’t they all), and it looks like Nickhun’s Jun will provide a direct contrast as a poor but warm-hearted medical resident. Ryu Seung-soo and Shin Eun-soo will be a father-daughter pair, the former as Master Han, headmaster of the titular magic school, and the latter as Lee Seul, who dreams of becoming a dancer instead of following in her father’s footsteps.
The characters, for reasons unexplained, will all come together at the magic school, and their story aims to reflect the dreams, hopes, challenges, and despair of this generation’s youths. The producers promise a fresh and humorous vibe, that is also emotionally resonant and a story that viewers can empathize with. That… is a tall order. Go big or go home, I guess, JYP.
Jinyoung, Shin Eun-soo in Legend of the Blue Sea
This cast and the director Kim Do-won are, for the most part, a big question mark for me. Yoon Park is the only cast member I’m familiar with, and although I think he’s a decent actor, he tends to choose assy characters that he doesn’t quite manage to make likable (see: Introverted Boss and What’s With This Family?). I don’t think I’ve ever seen Nickhun in anything outside of cameos in Dream High and The Producers, but the acting talent coming out of 2PM is a mixed bag. (On the one hand, you have Jun-ho, who was ace as Seo Yul in Chief Kim—may his bromance with Namgoong Min live on forever!—and then you have… Taecyeon.) This director, who’s pulling double-duty as screenwriter for the project, also has a very short list of credits: 2016 indie movie Dear… Lena. That’s it.
I’m also giving some side-eye to Shin Eun-soo’s role, because she is way too young to have a loveline with any of her fellow cast members (she was born in 2002, which makes her 14). She and Jinyoung have acted together before in Legend of the Blue Sea as mini Jeon Ji-hyun and Lee Min-ho, and they were cute in their scenes together, but now that I know their age difference (he’s 22), the ick factor is there. I’m hoping the drama can work with that gap without making things uncomfortable.
All this to say that I really do hope this turns out to be another Dream High-esque success for JYP, because that is the drama I point to as the golden standard for high school/coming-of-age/youth dramas. You better bring your A game, JYP, I need another Sam-dong in my life! Filming for Magic School is due to commence in July, and is expected to release in the latter part of this year.

Did you watch Age of Youth, tipsymocha? I fell in love with Yoon Park in that drama. He was excellent in that one.

I did, and I really liked him in it as well! I think his turns in Introverted Boss and What's With This Family? just left more lasting impressions because those characters were more prominent in the stories.

I seem to only be able to find them palatable when there's murder involved...
Idk what that says about my teenage experience...

Same!!! Solomon's perjury and white Christmas were really good, as well as School 2013(one of my top 5 dramas). But the high school dramas that touch on love don't relate to me at all.

Have you guys tried Angry Mom? I also don't like cheery-cheesy high school dramas but the plot was interesting and it's really worth it. Also school 2013 is good too

Me too. I think it's because (Korean) high school dramas tend to be really formulaic: bullying, love, friendship. And the story is somewhat predictable as well. I get that dramas pick the more interesting points to talk about, but it's less relatable in that way. Every high school drama seems to be just a rehash of the previous one with a different backdrop.
I'm planning to watch With You (C-drama) sometime soon though since I quite like the novel and it is really just a pure high-school drama with very average high-school happenings.

Dream High 2 shattered everything resembling hope within me. I couldn't even get past the first few episodes.
For that matter- everyone puts Dream High on this pedestal and I'll admit that the music from it is still in my playlists, but it was NOT without its flaws either. I still don't approve of the sudden OTP switch. Kim Soo Hyun deserved better than her. I still can't believe it within myself that she actually liked him for real. I did believe her and Taecyeon though.

I too felt that Taecyeon and Suzy had more of a deeper connection in Dream High.
I loved Som Sam Dong and I believed his feelings for Hye Mi. But I thought they would have made great friends instead of lovers. Like good friends who were always bickering with the boyfriend/husband but all three were good friends.

Nichkhun has starred abroad in drama's and he's actually quite good, I honestly believe that 2pm is one of those rare groups where all members can act. When jyp puts their mind to it I;m sure they can produce something great, like dream high

Iiiinteresting. I feel like Moorim School wasn't super well received in ratings or buzz, but it looks like the idea inspired a few writers. Hopefully one of these two shows (Andante and Magic School) gets it right!

Hold up! One is a college student, one is (working as) a magician and one is a medical resident. So why would this three go back to high school again? I'm confused. Unless this is actually a magic academy not magic (high) school. Or they don't have to state their age at enrolment.

You took the questions right out of my mind. I actually re-read the descriptions because I thought I overlooked some detail. I agree that I think this is a no-age-barred Magic School that will have the general feel of a typical high school.

Talking about web drama did you all see one commercial (game) stars three cute ahjussi, The Rebel ahjussi, Kim Myung Min and Eric? It is so hillarious. Very well made even more than the real drama lol.

The web dramas I've seen so far have been quite cheesy and/or fluffy, so the fact that it's a web drama automatically lowers my expectations. I haven't watched very many though, and am open to recommendations.
At least the setting (a magicians' school) is innovative.
I missed the post yesterday introducing you, tipsymocha-- welcome aboard! May your Dramabeans minionhood be a magical experience!

I read this and was pleasantly astonished to hear that five Korean actors were going to appear in the 7th Season of Game of Thrones.

ahhhhh. So that's why JYP announced that Jinyoung will not be a frontrunner/auditioniong (or whatever the term is) for School 2017! It's such a pity but I'm keeping my hopes up because it's Jinyoungie (and it'll be such a big break for him)

You're telling me that JYPE passed on Jinyoung auditioning for School 2017, a drama known to catapult young actors into mainstream stardom so he can star in a company produced webdrama opposite a middle schooler.....

hmm... sounds like JYP is a fan of the popular series of "The Magicians" novels, recently turned into an American TV series. No surprise that a big time producer like JYP would hitch his wagon to a that franchise. Hopefully it's orders of magnitude better than the Moorim School snoozer. No place to go except up, after his Dream High II directorial fiasco. Fighting!!!!!

Huh, not really liking the description but I'll probably give it a try for Jinyoung. I feel like he's one of the most underrated idol-actors out there but then again, he only has a limited number of dramas under his belt.
I've seen only seen Yoon Park in What Happens to My Family (he and Son Dambi had the most boring love line among the Cha siblings, lol) and Come Back, Ajusshi but he hasn't really left an impression yet.
And since we're talking about JYP here, can we get some awesome cameos (a la Love Cells and SidusHQ actors)? *looks at Choi Wooshik and Kim Taehoon*

Yess Junho only has 5 acting projects under his belt, Chief Kim included, so far but he just keeps getting better and better. I really hope we'll see more of him in dramaland now that 2pm are on hiatus.
He is also a multitalented singer-songwriter-dancer, his Japanese solo albums are great.

ACK she was 14 and and he's 22??!! Ugh I feel all icky too thinking about their scenes in LOBS.
If she has a loveline with any of the adult cast, then count me out. I was and will always be put off by all these young girls being cast in a romance opposite grown men.

David Copperfield? Eerrrr, now I'm confused... How does that have anything to do with magic? I read the book and there's nothing magical in any way, shape or form about it, no matter what meaning of the word you use. Is there another DC that I don't know about?
Also, 14 and 22??? If there's going to be any hint of romance in this show (between her character and the adult actors that is), I'm not gonna watch.. That's just way too icky.
