Name That Drama: Steadily amping up the difficulty level
by HeadsNo2
As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.
- This one seems tough to narrow down, what with the rich/poor dynamic
It’s an old drama that I saw a snippet of. I believe it’s a story of a poor boy and a rich girl. The part that I saw was when the OTP were teenagers/young adults.
The scene I remember: The male lead was invited to the female lead’s house for a party. His mom stayed up all night beforehand to make snacks/desserts for him to bring to the party. When he came to the party I think he saw the female lead, because he was embarrassed, and he just left early. He ate his mom’s dessert by himself while crying and later told her that everyone liked her snacks.
- Name Those Two Chinese Dramas
Hello Beanies,
I have two Chinese dramas that I need help figuring out. I remember watching this drama on the television when I was in elementary school. Perhaps during 2002-2006-ish.
The first drama is kind of vague, but maybe someone does know. It’s kinda like sageuk, but the Chinese version, because I remember the elaborate hair and the not-modern-clothing.
The scene I vividly remember till now (based on my little kid memory) is a scene where they give the hero a riddle to solve. He was given a soccer-sized rock(?), maybe smaller, and a thread. The rock has a little route inside of it. Like the ant’s house. And the riddle is that he needs to get the thread to reach from one end to another. And a woman (the heroine?) helps him solve it by tying the thread on an ant and letting the ant find the way out of the rock. The rock might also have been made of jade. I’m kinda blurry regarding this.
The second drama is also a Chinese sageuk, because I remember so many scenes in the forest. Somebody is very sick because he/she was poisoned and they need to find a man with a flower on his head because he knows the cure. Thats all I remember. Thank you for your help!
- Name That Movie or Drama
So there’s this movie or drama which is probably from the early 2000s, but I don’t remember since I was really young. It was about the relationship between a housekeeper and a guest.
One scene I remember is him pretending to have lost his watch, leading her to search all day in the trash for it. Although he didn’t mean it, she was obviously unhappy about it. Please help me, I do want to finish that movie.
- Whistle-blow the name of this one
Hi,
I hope you can help me out with this. Been watching a couple of dramas lately, and they always seem to involve whistleblowing. This reminded me of a drama — it was either a drama that I watched (recently), or read in the news, or read the synopsis. It’s about a guy (the chief or section head) who was the whistleblower for the company. However, he ended up staying in the company (instead of leaving or getting fired) and ended up always getting pushed around by a higher-up because of his whistleblowing.
This has been bothering me for the past few weeks and I hope that you can help me find this drama.
- They just keep getting vaguer
Hello Beanies,
Actually, my description is very vague. This is not even something I have watched either. I came across the summary of this drama when surfing the net, but I couldn’t find it again.
The heroine used to be an idol. However, she lost her popularity and then started working part time. The hero is now a popular star. They used to date earlier, as I remember. But now he is kind of bullying her.
This is what I can remember. I’m not even sure if this is a combination of two or three dramas. Thank you.
- Name That Trailer
I saw two trailers (at different times) of this drama. I think it was like a Facebook post of a “Coming Soon” or something. In the first trailer, the lead heroine is angry and shouting at a guy in the office. Other people clear off when the guy (who may have been the lead) kisses the woman. She runs away and goes down some stairs, and the guy follows her.
In the other trailer, the lead heroine goes to the hospital where her mom is waiting for her with the doctor. They argue about the lead’s age and maybe his single status. When another doctor passes them by, he bows to the mother and talks about something, and it becomes clear that the mom called the heroine to meet with this doctor with the intention of setting them up. She gets angry… and then I don’t remember. This is not a Korean drama. It is Chinese, I think. And pretty recent. It could also be Taiwanese.
Sorry if the details are all messed up. I have been looking for this drama for a few months now. Beanies, please help me!
Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

It's not The Greatest Love.. Yes, Gong Hyo-jin's character was an idol in the past and Cha Seung-won was a popular celebrity in the present, but neither does she work part-time, nor were they in a relationship in the past.. So, it's not that..

I also think that it's Misaeng. However, it's a pretty new series, not sure if the person is looking for something a bit old?

I also think Green Rose for number one, although I dont remember the younger parts story that much. But a story between rich girl-poor guy seems to match.

1 definitely green rose. Goo Soo and Lee da hae. He was an entry level employee at her father's company. The scene was when he was invited to her birthday and his mom made a box of snacks for her. I remember the part he took back his gift box, ate the whole box alone and later told his mom everyone likes them.

5 sounds an awfully lot like Greatest Love. Although they didn't know each other before -- when they meet she's a has-been and he's an A- listed.

What about Last Scandal of my Life? They dated when they were young and then he became a big star...though she was never an idol and she got married instead of working part-time. He does bully her a little when they meet again. Ahh this description sounds like two of my all-time favourite dramas (Best Love + Last Scandal) mashed up!

but in neither of them were they dating before. in Last Scandal I think they just liked each other but never went out. and in GL they only met at the start of the drama

Well I don't think either are quite correct anyway, but in Last Scandal I'm pretty sure the two leads were first bf/gf to each other. And I agree that GL doesn't fit nicely because they never had a previous relationship.
That's why I said it sounds like these two dramas were mashed up - the OP did mention that they weren't sure whether they had confused 2-3 dramas together.

#5 sounds like The Greatest Love/ Best Love... Though I am not too sure if it was actually bullying. But yes, he sure was rude.
Oh yes he did ask her to throw the trash away.
Okay I think this calls for a re-watch as i can't remember it! :P

Yes! Thanks a lot. I mistook it as a drama because of the page that shared the trailers, which usually is for dramas. I looked up "The last woman standing" and that's the one I was looking for. It's been killing me for months. Thanks a lot, Jazz. You made my day. And thanks Dramabeans for posting my query.

No. 5 could also be Queen In Hyun's Man. Yoo In Na and the second male lead used to date and then he become top star and bully her when they meet again. Though I don't recall whether she used to be an idol or not.

Although 5 sounds like it's "The Greatest Love" because the heroine was a has-been idol. However, it's not this drama because the two leads never had a love story from the past.
5 is actually "Last Scandal of My Life" with Choi Jinsil; in this drama, the two main characters have an old love line. She was some sort of entertainer, but she lost popularity and worked as a cleaning lady.

It could be skip beat, everything fits except.for NOW she's trying to become an idol, she wasn't one in the past. But she did date the second lead, he became famous and then he started bullying her and she's working part-time jobs for the entertainment company...

I think I could be watching #5 now... it's an older Twianese drama called Summer's Desire and the heroine is in training to be an idol but the old flame comes back and he's a successful superstar. So they have a history - both orphaned and adopted into the same family.

#2a feels like I read the story (folklore?) when I was an elementary student in one of my english text books. It was definitely chinese, but now I couldn't recall the title. What I remember though was that it was not the only test they got but a series of it....
So frustrating to search my memories and get nothing though. Now this might keep me awake :/

Hmmm, I'm only sure with #3, Autumn Fairytale. Housekeeper played by Song Hye Kyo and the guest/hotel owner was played by Won Bin <3
I'm just guessing for 2B - Legendary Siblings 2. The empress got sick and the doctor knew that to cure her, only the flower which can be found in a rather dangerous top part of the mountain is the answer.
The rest are pieces of different dramas for me but none exactly fit just one story so I don't think they would count lols

#2 1. seems like Mischievous Princess/Bratty Princess where Jang Na Ra is the princess.
I remember that a monk gaved a puzzle to the emperor and told him whoever solves it the fastest will be the best partner and problem solver of the emperor.
Jang Na Ra broke it with a sword.
