Im Joo-hwan to play main rival in Bride of the Water God

Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond) is now in contention to join tvN’s fantasy-romance drama Bride of the Water God 2017, which would have him joining Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo), Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons), Gong Myung (Drinking Solo), and Krystal (She’s So Lovable) in the main cast.

The drama takes aspects of the manhwa story, which was a fusion historical featuring a water god who is offered a bride sacrifice in times of drought, but modernizes the setting and adapts them to modern-day Korea. Nam Joo-hyuk will play the water god Ha-baek, with Shin Se-kyung as his bride; Krystal’s character is a goddess who has lived among people for centuries, and has a one-sided crush on Ha-baek. Gong Myung is described as helping Ha-baek while also harboring a one-sided love on Krystal. Let’s just say there’s a merry-go-round of sad crushes afoot in this drama.

Im Joo-hwan, meanwhile, is set to play Ha-baek’s primary rival, who in the original storyline was another water god who gets Ha-baek jealous when he gets close to his bride. In this version, he’ll be the CEO of a resort (which Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim’s Yang Se-jong was previously in the running for) who gets off on the wrong foot with the heroine: He runs into her when she goes to the bank seeking a loan and inadvertently causes her embarrassment. He then attempts to take on a project to develop a particular spot of land, but it stalls when Shin Se-kyung refuses to sell.

I guess Im Joo-hwan has been relegated to second leads and rivals now, which is a darned shame because he’s a talented, nuanced actor and seemed poised for a strong career following Tamra the Island. But his follow-ups didn’t really take off and and his post-army roles have been mostly supporting (Shine or Go Crazy, Oh My Ghostess, Uncontrollably Fond). Well, at least I know he’ll deliver, even with limited screentime.

Bride of the Water God 2017 has now finished casting its main lineup and plans to hold its script reading and first shoots later this month.

Im Joo-hwan has done films as early as 2006 (1st saw him in "A Millionaire's First Love"), but they've mostly been smaller supporting roles or bit parts.

Even if it's the 2nd lead or a supporting role, IJH needs a memorable role in something that gets good ratings to boost his recognition level (as his role in "Gu Family Book" did for Choi Jin-hyuk).

To be fair, the character is an eternally youthful god. A baby-faced CEO isn't that much of a stretch when you take that into account.

He's the CEO of a company, he even looks too young honestly. I mean, how much more pounding can my feelings of underachievement take when all these young folks scattered in dramaland are heads of huge kingdoms and I'm not even on track to owning a conglomerate. Is it really that hard? #SadRealityOfLifeVSdramaland.

Exactly, what's the use of this adaption! They erased the magical feels and the unique story from the original manhwa by turning it into a typical modern drama with the same old troupes.

They just borrowed the main concept from the original to lure viewers so this will not sound like a typical story!

We already have a sleeping beanie down below. Hi John!

0

I agree. At this point, the title (and some names) is just there to generate public interest because the source material was popular during its run.

0

I get the same feeling that they are using the source as a means to garner interest. But then it makes me wonder too if they really don't know the unwritten rule about not messing with the original, especially if it has a huge following. Because then it defeats the purpose of garnering interest once the real setup is put to light. It's not an adaptation. It's a spinoff that looks more like an entirely new story leading to fans of the original work angry and uninterested. They really should have just made it a standalone story about a bride and a god. Those seem to be the trend in dramaland these days anyway. lol

0

I know... I just cannot wrap my head around why they are even doing this as an "adaptation". Honestly it sounds more like a spinoff of Goblin, but with a younger cast. I'm not sure how I feel about this... -_-

0

Should've just made it into it's own drama if they're gonna change literally everything besides their character name tbh

I love the writer but my eyebrows were rising all over the place when the casting described Mu-ra and Biryeom as the second leads - in the manhwa, they're no more than minor annoyances/third leads at best. And I hope Hoo-ye's presence means we'll soon get Nak-bin, because she's basically the reason why the manhwa plot started off the way it did.

I agree...the PD and, more importantly, the writer are both so solid. I actually don't think it was necessarily the writer's idea to move it to modern day. That seems like something the production company needed to do, either for budget reasons or that historical fantasy dramas don't usually do well in Korea. Even though the casting is uneven, I will have to give it a go because of Arang writer. With regard to this actor, I'd love it if he got a lead role but I think he will have to slug it out with supporting roles (which he obviously has no trouble getting), and hopefully will get that magic role that gets the lead offers coming his way.

I understand it well with him being second to JJS in oh my ghostess. But to woobin and now njh? Lols... Hope he can get good script. Is njh that popular in Korea to land this first lead title?

JJS better actor than NJH and Woobin? Really? Maybe it is not necessary to be so categorical? If you can't abnegate of comparisons, you better compare the same age actors.

What a passion to compare the actors with the age difference of 10-15 years?
Of course the actors older than 35 years will be in a better position initially. But maybe you better watch their earlier works? You probably just burst out laughing, at best, at worst you will be embarrassing for their acting...

lols, Cmon... should i compare woobin to leesohyuk or lee jong suk? And compare njh to jisoo? hyunshik? or even suho from exo?

why i compared them because ijh have been the 2nd lead actor to jjs, woobin and 'going to be' njh.

you want me to compare jjs to kang dong won? wonbin? have ijh acted alongside those names???

i watched all their dramas for your information. i watched some of those actors' movies as well. i watched dramas since i was 4y.o since Cha In Pyo was still so freaking popular.

YES. OF COURSE JJS IS A BETTER ACTOR THAN WOOBIN AND NJH. i like woobin and njh. but let's be honest, woobin almost played the same character over and over again. njh?? haha, have you watched scarlet heart??? he was soooo good as puppy boyfriend, but then... a serious role like in scarlet, have you watched it??

this comment isnt because i dislike woobin or njh. i like them so much. i followed their projects. especially njh, i am a YG stan and he's YG family.

That's just it, the writer and PD could have been such a great team, because we know they're talented and know their stuff..... but then that cast. I mean, when Shin Se-kyung is the most talented person in it, idek. But I don't think this'll turn out badly, because at least the people behind it generally have a clear vision for their projects.

But a lot of the changes have me genuinely headscratching - not just the setting change (surely tvN could try not being cheap for once and actually use some of that Goblin money to stump up for sageuk sets?) but also the initial impression that they'd eliminated the character of the guy who actually was the second lead in the manhwa. But now they've cast IJH, I think at least that much remained intact.

(also, if he's playing who I think he's playing..... then who's playing Nakbin?!)

I didn't realize that this was going to be in a modern setting. I read the manhwa ageeess ago and don't remember anything about the story EXCEPT it had some of the most beautiful, most detailed drawings I had every seen in a manhwa/manga/manhua. Like I think it's pretty well renowned because of it's drawings.

Really makes no sense to me to do a drama if it's not going to have the beautiful almost ethereal saguek prettiness to it. I'm wondering what similarities actually exist with the original.

I'm a fan of both Im Joohwan (watched What's Up, Ugly Alert, Shine or Go Crazy, Uncontrollably Fond, OMG, but first noticed him in Frozen Flower) and Nam Joohyuk. But I do have this issue where I can't stand to finish a drama even if I love both guys but can't stand the lead girl. And I am not quite fond of both girls in this drama. The struggle is real.

I thought it would've been much more compelling for Im Joo-hwan to play the emperor character rather than Hoo-Ye. The newbie who was on the previous casting post was kind of a good choice to be a part of the triangle. The emperor was the main villain in the manhwa and I think it would be great to see how they would fit him in the modernized version. He was all sorts of villainy, and yet still quite a complex character- with that unrequited love thing for Habaek's mom, a more experienced actor would suit him. And since Im Joo-hwan was getting casted in this show they should've given him a better role! I mean, I'm not sure about the changes they're going to do in the drama, but boy, Man-hwa Hoo-ye was such a drag. He wasn't even in the story that much. Just the typical annoying triangle with the personality of a wet dishrag. And Im Joo-hwan is capable of so much more rather than being a wet dishrag in a tailored suit. Putting the emperor character on the drama would've added a whole lot of meat in the story but I guess they want this show to be just plain miso soup. Eh. But what do I know? I'm just a manhwa fan who waited years and years to see this production take place.

The original mahwah was unnecessarily long and full of frustrating noble sacrifice but it was original, with detailed world-building and beautiful character designs. Also, the parents' love story was heartwrenchingly tragic.
