Healer PD helms new sageuk romance project Seven Day Queen

PD Lee Jung-sub, who helmed Ji Chang-wook’s action thriller Healer and Park Shin-yang’s underdog legal drama Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho, is returning with a new project called Seven Day Queen. He left KBS last August, and this will be his first project working at Monster Union, a content production group. The drama Seven Day Queen will be a 20-episode sageuk romance, which will be written by Choi Jin-young.

It was previously reported that PD Lee would be working on a drama called Sang-shik and Nara, but his final decision was to go ahead with Seven Day Queen, which will start the casting phase pretty soon. The plot is based on the tragic Joseon legend about the love story between King Jungjong (who overthrew his brother Yeonsangun, the king in currently airing Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People) and his Queen Dangyeong, who was crowned and deposed within the span of a week due to rival political factions that controlled the king’s rule.

According to historical legend, after the queen was dethroned and removed from the palace, the king would walk to the outside royal pavilion every day and sigh as he gazed at a mountain in her direction. After hearing this, she placed a red skirt, her favorite to wear in the palace, on a rock on the mountain face so he would know that she was well and that she still yearned for him. To this day, the legend of Inwang Mountain and the skirt boulder is famous throughout Korea.

PD Lee Jung-sub has a solid list of credits including hit drama Baker King Kim Tak-gu, and is no stranger to sageuk (he directed Kang Ji-hwan’s Hong Gil-dong). He seems to do male-centric hero stories well, so I’m curious to see what he’ll do with this drama, which sounds like an ardent love story with a political backdrop.

I agree Saguek is the best genre. I love Saguek with more action scenes. I also like it because the acting is not so restricted and you find better actors in Saguek drama. I think only good actors fit in a Saguek drama.

It is like sayinf modern drama for a whole year is not a good idea.

As you know Saguek is as broad a as modern drama. It has rom-com, fantasy, comedy, action, melo, political and all others genres there is in modern drama.

Same here.
Moon Embracing the Sun started my kdrama existence and with that, sageuks will always have a special place in my heart. I never mind tons of sageuk in a year [I enjoyed them ALOT] same with modern dramas.

It sounds tragic but I'm already intrigued. I hope this is an indication that Rebel is doing so well it persuaded him to go back to his Hong Gil Dong roots.

I wish MCW would be in this bc I miss her so much in a sangeuk. It's been too long. Can't her and LJK just join this project instead?! But I guess fans don't want him in another sangeuk again ? He's just so good at it...
SJK is just wishful thinking but he needs to come back to sangeuks as well.

"Ardent love story with a political backdrop" totally reminds me of Princess Man. If they write her as a fierce character, she would be totally perfect for this.

I doubt MCW will want to do again a quite similar role she had done in Princess Man. She and LJK will fit this, but they are already in another drama (have they confirmed remake of Criminal Minds yet?)

King Jungjong is featuring in Saimdang right now along with the Deposed Queen Shin. An ardent romance aside, this king was one of the three top incompetent kings of Joseon in my book: him, King Seonjo and King Injo. Well, Yeonsangun was the Nero of Joseon and got kicked out so I don't even count him as a proper king.

Incompetent king, strong heroine, ardent romance and political intrigue? Possibly? Sounds great. I think this could be interesting.

He might make an appearance in Rebel. We have to see the end of Yeonsangun and Nok-soo.

Awww..such a romantic story albeit a tragic one.
But I'm not in the mood for tragic love stories nowadays. Just recently watched THE IMPERIAL DOCTRESS and it really broke my heart. I rooted for the heroine coz she is bold and courageous but she got mistreated by her prince. She is loved by the emperor but she still choose her prince..arrgh, such a waste..and that ending, so vague..
Sorry for sharing this here..just a brokenhearted drama fan..my apologize dramabeans.

I wouldn't be torn. It's obvious LJG is more experienced and skilled than KHN. LJG interpretation has more depths and that comes with the years of experience. But KHN also has so much potential and I thought he is one of the best amongst his age group so it this drama it would good if they can give him a chance for the lead role.

0

Well I won't be torn. It's obvious that LJG is more experienced and skilled. His interpretation has more depths which actually come from years of experience.

But I thought KHN also has good potential and thought he is one of the best actors amongst his age group. I hope they will give him a chance for the lead role in this drama.

Oooh. I want to add Yoon Shi Yoon into the mix.

Ahhh! That explains the line the king says in Dae Jang Geum about the red skirt spread on the mountain. All the times I've seen DJG I never quite understood what he was talking about.

Care to point out at which part the king said this? I've watched Dae Janggeum three times but never noticed this before!

You made me research it. It's about a half hour into Ep. 53, when the king tries to explain to Jang Geum how he came to love her. He tells her about his "lost love," the deposed queen he had to give up who spread her skirt on the mountain.

Lol clearly, I have not been paying enough attention. (but can you blame me though when it is a looong drama?). You, honey, on the other hand, I have nothing but respect for you. I didn't mean to give you more work to do but it is sooo sweet of you to tell me exactly which episode it was. /Squishes your cheeks/ Thank you! (Now should I watch Dae Janggeum for the 4th time...??)

@enkeys: You're welcome. Going back over a few of the DJG episodes reminded me of the wonderful writing in that drama, the deep humanity of the characters -- something I much miss now in most K-drama.

They'd probably sugarcoat King Jungjong here like they did in Dae Jang Geum.

I am so excited for another sageuk. But Joseon sageuk again? We have so many Joseon sageuks line up by now - Rebel, Saimdang, Ruler of The Mask, The Kingdom (Joseon zombie) and now this? Can't they just make a sageuk in pre-Joseon period?

I prefer pre-Joseon too because the costumes are more interesting, less submissive women and better hairstyles.

Honestly, this is quite fresh story because everyone is talking about the downfall of Yeonsangun and the drama is over...there are actually so many dynasties in Korea, but there so limited amount of historical materials, so it is quite difficult to create saeguk from lesser known dynasties

Wanted them together in Heirs! If KJW isn't cast, I'm willing to settle for HHJ from W-Two Worlds with KHN. She has some sageuk experience and I think they'll make the feels real.

Please cast the actor and actress who have done sageuk in the past at least once as the main leads. Kang Ha Neul-Kim Ji Won pairing sounds interesting (but KJW already in the another project).

So my dream pairing will be Kang Ha Neul - Kim So Eun. Both have done sageuk and KSE shined the most in her sageuk roles in the past honestly (Empress Chun Chu, Horse Doctor). Although it means they will have another sad and tragedy story again after Mourning Grave.

I would like a chance for the under-rated Jeon Hye-bin, Park Se-young, Park Si-yeon, Baek Jin-hee, Kang Han-na, who has proven over and over that can rock this genre to take the lead role.

The script may suck but they won't suck along with it.

You are right. Two Oh Hae Youngs really end up as bestfriend, too bad we didnt get to see the friendship in the drama itself.

I want to see a sageuk with these two as the main characters, but I dont mind a modern drama too as best friends.

0

Seo Hyun-jin was awesome in "The Duo" way before "Daughter Baek..." came along.
I'm grateful that she is finally recognized for her talents and a solid leading lady in any genre but I love her the most in sageuks.

0

so glad they have become real life friend! Love their frenemy chemistry in Another Oh Hae YounG!

0

Jeon Hye-bin and Park Bo-young were pretty good in "King and I" especially Bo-young.
Fell in love with Hye-bin's acting in Queen In-soo. Probably my favorite portrayal of the deposed Queen Yoon.

I hope PBY's next drama will be something like thriller, sageuk or melodrama. She rocks in romcom, but ppl should know that she can do well in other genre too.

0

I think she'd make a great sageuk villain. I love Honey Lee and she is doing a terrific job as Nok-soo but if they ever make a cable sageuk where they go all out on the real Nok-sook then I'd love to see Park Bo-young take the role.
Nok-soo is not half as bad in Rebel as she was in history. Yeonsangun too but maybe we'd get there at some point.

I need kim soo hyun back in dramaland so please send him an offer! As for the female lead..Hanhyojoo will do just fine...she's so pretty in hanbok and she has experience in historical dramas.

Sorry for saying this but I have hit my limit with sageuk's. Korea has to try to branch out into other genres because between this and thriller/action/mystery dramas, I am being overloaded on the same dramas being produced.

Sageuk drama is like a pride for Koreans, it just show much how they proud and love their history. I am not Korean but I respect and envy them for this. Not all sageuk drama will be well received internationally although the rating in Korea is high and we the non Koreans probably won't be able to relate it that much.

I think kdrama already branch out, just recently there are so many thriller and sageuk drama. Cables like jTBC and TvN already had many drama which different content.

I don't have much interest in Korean history,definitely a cultural issue.Sorry :-)

I hope this drama is not going to drag the whole "seven-day-Queen" part for 20 episodes. Sometimes, you ought to question the timeline in Korean dramas.

On the side note, I heard that the dethroned Queen did come to see him in his death bed. So I guess they will add this scene?
