Kim Ji-won, Chun Woo-hee up for same lead role in KBS’s Third-Rate My Way

Kim Ji-won

Wait, you’re going to make me choose? Upcoming KBS drama Third-Rate My Way has just offered the leading lady role to Kim Ji-won (Descended From the Sun, Gap-dong), after recently offering it to Chun Woo-hee (The Wailing; Love, Lies), with Park Seo-joon (Hwarang) up to co-star. That’s a tough call, considering both actresses are wonderful and entirely capable of headlining their own dramas (finally!).

It’s definitely an unusual casting choice to have Kim and Chun up for the same character at the same time, but KBS has confirmed that both actresses are still in contention for the role. Usually, it’s not made public that two actors are competing for the same role, whether out of consideration or etiquette or just plain custom. Often in a scenario where a second actor is mentioned, we’ll later find out that the first actor had declined, but Chun’s management stated today that she’s still positively considering the role. Kim’s management said the same.

Third-Rate My Way is centered around two lead characters living third-rate lives: Choi Ae-ra is the leading lady, a woman who has given up her dreams of being a television announcer and currently works the info desk at a department store. Ae-ra has no specs, no strong family background, no impressive resumé or education, and no boyfriend, and her personality is described as both “sweet and salty.”

Park Seo-joon’s prospective character, meanwhile, currently works as a temporary employee in an ordinary office, living a nondescript life that contrasts to his glory days in high school, when he was a hotshot Taekwondo fighter. The drama will follow their success story as these two characters, “who have been told by the world to live as supporting characters,” decide to burst out of their humdrum lives that are going nowhere. (A note on the title: If it sounds a little awkward, it’s because there’s wordplay involved that doesn’t quite make it in translation; the title smushes together the word for “third-rate” (sanmai) with the English “my way,” making it both third-rate and my way.)

Third-Rate My Way comes from writer Im Sang-choon of Baek-hee Has Returned and PD Lee Na-jung of Nice Guy. It premieres in May as a Wednesday-Thursday KBS drama.

I hope she takes the movie offer instead. Working with the amazing Oh Dal-Su and Sol Kyung-gu would be much better for her.

Kim Ji-won could use the lead role as a growing actress.

Okay, this is a bad move because they're both positively considering the role. But then again... should I be surprised with KBS and their decisions? Lol

I looove both of them but I'm actually leaning more towards Chun Woo Hee. Loved her in the Wailing and Han Gongju (*cries*)

Jiwon hasn't starred as the lead in a critical piece like Chun Woo Hee, true. But Jiwon is going to be a lead soon. She's earned a chance with her acting and she's very much in demand by all the networks according to a lot of articles I read. This certainly isn't Jiwon's first offer for a lead role, reports have been that she's passed down several, like PSH's role in Doctors.

If that report is true and not a rumor, then thank goodness KJW didn’t take that role. Imagine her with Kim Rae Won... yeah, it would have never worked. Aside from a semi-weak plot, the only good thing about that drama was good casting so...

Wow, it IS kinda odd that they publicly announced that these two actresses are both in contention for the same role... unless it's one of those roles where two people play the same character... but I don't think that's the case here. Wouldn't it be awkward and messy if they both wanted the role or if one gets chosen over the other? Who makes the ultimate decision?

Anyways, the storyline already makes me feel BLAH (I'm imagining the main characters living out their mundane lives and feeling miserable knowing they've left their dreams behind), so I guess they're really hitting the nail on the head with the whole idea of two people "who have been told by the world to live as supporting characters," so I look forward to the moment they decide to live differently. It's helpful that the actors are already likeable. Btw, Kim Ji-won looks gorgeous in the above photo!

I'm interested to find out how the casting will play out!

Don't particularly care who gets the role but the drama sounds like something I woulf watch.

I think I would lean more towards Kim Ji Won because I think she matches better with Park Seo Joon.

Chun Won Hee and Kim Ji Won are so vastly different in onscreen temperment though. Like Kim Ji Won is more Sweet than Salty whole Chun Won Hee is more Salty than Sweet.

Would watch for either or neither.

I wouldnt refer CWH as salty. She is delicious man.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think salty means appearance. I thought it was more to do with personality. Like someone who has a tendency to be a sore loser. In a comical way ofcourse.

So Kim Ji Won for me feels like she'll play the sweet girl with ease while Chun Won Hee would play up the saltiness with sass.

Wasn't meaning to say who looked better or acts better. ^_^

Required fields are marked *

Idk about Won Hee but Ji Won can do both.

What's Up - sweet, so sweet
To the Beautiful You - salty, sass, determined but misguided, potential sweet, overall fun
Heirs - salty with a extra dash of salt
DotS - salty with a hint of sweet

I haven't seen her 2014 & 2015 projects but I think she has the range. TtBY introduced me to her and she stuck with me like Lee Hyun Woo & Ha Neil. Then W'sU convinced me she could act. Heirs sealed the deal. Rachel is crazy determined but she's not my gymnast from TtBY. And then DotS of course made me want her to get her own drama finally.

I think she can pull of a mix of salty & sweet or sweet & salty depending on they want the dominant type.

Required fields are marked *

In Heirs, you’re wrong. Just see her emotional scenes and when she smiles and you’ll see the sweetness there too. That’s why I’m forever mad at KES for writing something that could have had depth into two jackasses having fighting over a girl that would have been better off either of them anyway. Thankfully KES made it up by casting KJW in DOTS...

this is just beyond weird. i have never heard of production publicly announcing that there are 2 actors competing for the role. though of course that is how it works in reality. but no one ever discloses it. ever.

now it will be more of 'x got rejected' rather than 'x declined the role'. not something an actor wants to be known

Yes this is weird. It doesn't feel good. Now I want both decline the role and see what KBS's reaction. Feel kind of direspect to both actressess, imo. If this is audition, then it doesn't matter. I dont know, never heard this kind of thing publicly announced. A strategy to see public reactions.

lol. KBS is really something else. I kinda hope CWH to stay in chungmuro since she already established actress in 20s and only do drama if it is worth it. As much as I love to see chungmuro actors in my small screen, I also want some drama growing actors like Ji Won to get the opportunity as well. Anyway either one will do for me. Just hope for good script.

I don't know why but I find Park Seo Joon to be more suitable being paired with a noona. I love him especially in KMHM but ever since She was Pretty, I find his styling kinda make him looks ageing, which is far from his youthful look in Witch's Romance which is only couple of years back.

I think his hair make him looks older. imk among his best partner was Baek Jin Hee (I Summon You, Gold). They really had the great chemistry. But probably this guy has thing for noona romance, I guess. Just like Ji Chang Wook ?

It would be so funny if the final actress turns out to be someone completely different! This is such a strange move and after this public announcement, both actresses might just say they have declined the offer! That would be a great "In your face KBS" :D

I feel like CWH would decline since her focus is so much in movies. But if KBS had to choose between the two, they would most likely choose CWH since her name and celebrity value is higher than KJW.

Kim Ji Won for me.

I actually forgot about the premise and drama's existence when I read the title. But I've been waiting for Kim Ji Won's lead role for too long. I'm still not particularly affected by the storyline but I'm much more likely to watch if my female bias is starring.

Tbh the premise sounds boring. But I would watch either of these actresses in anything and I actually really enjoyed the writer's other work.

The role sounds like a bit of a departure for both of them, image-wise. Not that they wouldn't both be amazing in it but Chun Woo-Hee is known for her serious dramatic work and Kim Ji-Won has played mostly confident, alpha girl type characters. Anywayyyy both are deserving actresses, I don't know why the production team is doing this, and I hope they both choose new projects soon.

Honestly want Chun Woo Hee to stay in movies. I feel that quite a few well liked korean movie actresses get lots of unnecessary bashing when they do dramas due to the increased visibility.

I like both actresses especially i have been waiting for Ji Wonnie's first leading role
It has to be really successful so that she could stay in a leading status in the future
I am a bit worried about the production after reading this new
They already playing games and it does not sound nice at all. Not professional . What are they thinking?
It is not the first time that Ji Won is the main contender for the drama
I am still bitter about Moonlight drawn by clouds casting
They only used her name to media play.
I thought KBS had learned their lessons from the past
Seem like tasting some sweetness of rating success recently caused them lose their mind again
The plot sound similar to other office dramas
The writer and The PD is quite promising. I really like Nice Guy. There is still hope
I was really hoping she will be casted in Misaeng 2 or Signal 2 though.

I understand the bitter feelings about Moonlight casting. Looking back, I don't know if that pair would have created the same drama

Still totally want the other Park-Kim pairing to have a try at it, though.

Are you referring to Beautiful Mind? I didn't watch it but the fans were mighty pissed with how it was handled, I hope Missing 9 doesn't share it'd fate.

I just noticed a pattern with Moonlight's casting news:
first,

Kim Ji Won then,
Kim Go Eun and finally,
Kim Yoo Jung

In all of those changes, the one constant was a 'Kim'. Looks like the really believed in the power of a 'Kim and Park' combination.

But KJW was offered MDBC, no? And she just turned it down and I’ve got no idea id KGE received an offer, if so then she turned it down too I guess. But it was for better because MDBC would be a totally different drama. Although I disapprove adult-minor pairing, I gotta say that KYJ can already be considered very experienced in sageuk unlike KJW or KGE so it was better this way...

Oh Lordy, rather than I recommend, its better I prepare your mind for the crazy world that is Nollywood:

Poor quality. Just...everything in general.
Things look budget. Don't get me started on the makeup. Brain Fetus is yuuuuuuuge improvement

Absurd storylines. You think amnesia's bad or the cliff of doom with its magical survival and miraculous healings are bad? Wait till you watch Nollywood.

Makjang before Makjang was invented, nuff said!

Witchcraft. A lot of it, more specifically, Juju.

Its quite the spectacle.

This is not to say everything's bad, just that you should readjust your expectations. And that's mostly for the straight-to-DVD kind. Their called Home Videos( because calling them films feel to generous lol).
Nollywood has grown tremendously and you get better quality movies (in the cinema even) than in the past. But there are still classics that'll recommend later.

@Bee

Wooooh Lordy, where to start? I think that rather than give recommendations, i should prep you on what to expect when lurkina around the crazy woods that is Nollywood.

Poor quality. Just...everything. The sound, picture quality, the acting can be good(there are fantastic actors) but dicey, shoddy script, dialogue. Choi, its not easy!!

Bad makeup. Brain fetus is Oscars level for nollywood.
Nollywood was Makjang before Makjang was invented.

Now don't I'm slamming everything, theres been tremendous growth and imrovement in the industry(cinema worthy even) and there are good classics. I'll be back with suggestions.
