Everyone’s desperate to work in MBC’s Radiant Office

The next workplace drama to grace our screens will be MBC’s Radiant Office, starring Go Ah-sung (Heard It Through the Grapevine) and Ha Suk-jin (1% of Anything). Gearing up for its premiere in March, a slew of stills and a new teaser have been released, where Ha Suk-jin shows his dictatorial side, cursing out his new employees despite their initial fearsome appearance.

The story sounds interesting because it has so many moving parts that it seems more like three dramas crammed into one. Let’s start with Go Ah-sung’s character who is a struggling young woman, working multiple part-time jobs everyday. When the exhaustion gets to her, she contemplates suicide and ends up jumping into the Han River. She’s inevitably rescued (because where would the drama be without its heroine) and rushed to the hospital, where she learns that she has terminal cancer with only a couple more months to live. This revelation leads her to make a 180-degree change in her personality so that she can live life to the fullest.

Around the same time, she gets a call from a company that tells her she’s been accepted as a full-time employee—a goal that she’s been working towards her entire adult life. This is where she meets Ha Suk-jin, her despotic supervisor whom she’ll eventually fall in love with, and her co-workers played by Hoya (Answer Me 1997) and Lee Dong-hwi (Answer Me 1988).

Before getting this new job, Hoya’s character was also going through a hard time because although he has an amazing resume, but he would fail his in-person interview every time. As a panicky individual with easily shattered confidence, he often freezes up in anxiety, and the released stills show him fainting from nervousness before his interview. Whereas Hoya at least had great specs, Lee Dong-hwi is a three-year repeat civil service exam student with absolutely nothing—no money, no family connections, no relevant professional experience. But he’s described as a romanticist at heart, who protects Go Ah-sung and becomes her champion.

On the other hand, I don’t know where Kim Dong-wook’s (Riders: Catch Tomorrow, Maids) character fits in, because he’s an ER doc. He likely becomes Go Ah-sung’s only support source as she goes through stages of her illness, but previous reports also hinted at a love triangle between her, Kim Dong-wook, and Ha Suk-jin, so maybe it’ll turn into something like the Kim Hyun-joo/Joo Sang-wook/Kim Tae-hoon relationship in Fantastic.

The start of the trailer is styled like a 1980s Hong Kong mafia movie, showing Go Ah-sung, Lee Dong-hwi, and Hoya striding purposefully in black suits and sunglasses with a gang of rough-looking individuals behind them. They look intimidating as they walk up to the one lone man (Ha Suk-jin) standing in front of the office building. But when they arrive, a funny reversal happens as Ha Suk-jin begins chewing out his three new employees, and the rest of their gangster followers flee to avoid his wrath. Right away, they have a mini-huddle and decide to beg as abjectly as possible to gain his favor, and the trailer ends with them dangling off Ha Suk-jin’s arms.

Wednesday-Thursday drama Radiant Office begins on March 15 after the conclusion of Missing 9.

Hoya's character depicts my reality. I am still jobless after two years of graduation because I shiver (literally) anytime I go for an interview. Despite passing every aptitude tests, I still can't get over my nervousness during interviews. It makes me pull my hair out after the interview especially when I'm well prepared. I have an interview this weekend and thinking about it drives me crazy.

An interview is a two-way street. They are interviewing you but you're interviewing them as well. Are they the right fit, do you really want to work for them? I think if you know that you are critiquing them as much as they are to you, you'll feel better.

Best advice ever! Alotof people tend to forget that. But also, the anxiety still does get to one.

Yes. You're there to learn as much as you can about them and whether they'd be a good fit for you, too. It needs to be a conversation. Interviews always remind me of first dates in that way.

I know what you mean; I always have butterflies in my stomach before an interview/speaking in public. Maybe that's just normal? Just be you, be prepared and maybe even try carrying out mock interview sessions with friends and family? I wish you the best of luck! If anything, you'll gain more interviewing experience from this, which should strengthen your skills. Rock it!

Try not to listen to some music, something that pumps you up or energizes you right before the interview. Put away all your notes and just focus on the song and music. At that point, you've done all that you can, so get into a relaxed mode and I think it may help!

Not everyone will get a job after one or two interviews, so good luck for you. Don't give up, don't stress yourself. I experienced same thing as well, so I know how your feeling. Just an advice, in case if you haven't, do part time jobs while waiting to get job. Something simple like cashier etc, which doesnt require a hard interview. Sometime employer wants to see what did you do while waiting for the job and this is quite helping.

Good luck!

I'm no expert but here's some suggestions:

- Apply for more openings, even those which you may not be very interested in. This helps you practice your interview skills in a real situation. So that when the 'ideal' or 'bigger' position/company calls you for an interview, you'd have gotten more experienced.

- Practice with friends. It's not the best simulation but better than practicing alone.

- Read up tips on acing interviews. If affordability or time is not an issue, sign up for a relevant course. If this is associated with fear of public speaking, similar courses may help.

- If you do trip up during the interview or have a rough start, don't give up. Not all is lost. You can still recover.

I also agree with @Sera about finding a temporary or contract position. Having been an interviewer before, long gaps or no employment are red flags. Find a good reason or fill the gap by finding temp jobs.

Do yourself a huge favor and watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks-_Mh1QhMc

It's a 20 minuted TED talk by Amy Cuddy (Social Psychologist; Associate Professor at Harvard Business School and Harvard School of Public Health; and Best-Selling Author. She was named one of “50 women who are changing the world” by Business Insider).

In this TED talk Amy shares excellent techniques for tackling challenges with confidence, enabling you to perform at your best.

I've used Amy's extremely simple techniques to overcome my own performance anxiety and social phobia.

Like I said....do yourself a favor. It could be the difference between your getting the job or not.

As a person who interviews almost 2-3 people every week for jobs, I hope this advice to you can be of some help. If you think you are a good fit for the role and if it is only the interview that makes you nervous, actually stating that right at the beginning of the interview to the people who are interviewing will actually remove some nervousness.

Typically, interviewers want you to be successful because they really want to recruit for a job. Trust me on that. They never ask tricky questions to trap you or make you fail. If you believe that, then it becomes easier.

.. Totally offtopic. But I really want to say this because too many people get too nervous in interviews.

Hello!

I suffer from (severe) anxiety from job interviews too!
So much so that I would practice before but tend to forget what to say during the interview. On the day of my interview, my body would be in full panic mode (on flight mode), I would puke and can hardly eat .. let alone think. I haven't found a job in over 2 years - I can barely even send in my resume without being anxious/sweaty. I feel the cause of it is me overthinking things and my inferiority complex. I have a hard time sharing info. about myself and having someone interviewing me is too intimate for me to handle because it's all about me, my capabilities and I'm terrified about not being able to answer their questions (since I do go blank)

But right now, I'm trying to practice and make myself get use to it all because I have to get over this fear to make $$! My advice is even if your interview didn't go so well, just think of it as experience and that you won't see them again! Also to calm your nerves, pat essential oil on your wrist and try to smell it (w/out looking weird) when you need to calm your body a bit and always remember to pace your breathing

Good luck with your interview! x

I am not sure if this can be of any help, but I used this method every time I got an interview.

I am nervous in every interview, I can assure you that. However, I'll recite this to myself every time I wait for an interview that if this job is mine, it's going to me mine. So I should worry about it. If it is not destined for me, that's fine. I'll be there being me. If that's what the company, place is looking for, then that's good. If I'm not the one they're looking for, that's fine. :)

Normally when I am there waiting for being interviewed, am being interviewed, and after having been interviewed I usually have some feeling that I'm accepted or not. Perhaps it's gut feeling?

I will not tell you not to be worried 'cause I'm worried everytime too. But just be happy, show them that you're proud of yourself. Most of the time if you're honest with yourself your attitude will show. If that's what they're looking for, you'll get accepted.

For what its worth, the person who is interviewing you might be feeling anxious too. I'm speaking from experience as being part of an HR team, part of my role is conductung interviews. Personally, I get nervous meeting candidates too. You have been given really great points of advice here so don't be discouraged to keep trying. Treat it as practice until you overcome it. Yes its very much a two way conversation--as much as you are being interviewed, you should also be asking questions to make sure its the right job or company for you. Good luck!

The real deal is finding a job guys :/ it's just so hard ....just had an interview today but i feel like they won't hire me.

I was hoping the terminal illness was going to be a mis-diagnosis like Twenty Again. Go Ah-sung is always great, but I just don't enjoy terminal illness dramas no matter how uplifting they try and be.

Thank you so much for the article and character descriptions. But "Desperate to be on this drama?" Go Ah-sung is a wonderful actress. Ha Suk-jin is a mediocre actor. (I would have been happier if Lee Dong-hwi was the leading man.) The trailer looks pretty awful.

Huh? No. The title says they are desperate to work. The characters are desperate to work in the office. Because they all have had sucky career prospects before this for various reasons. The characters, not the actors.

Ha Suk-Jin seems to be reprising his role in his last two dramas - 1% of Anything and Drinking Solo, starting out as a jerk and making a turn around somewhere in the middle of the drama.
I loved him in 1% and his chemistry with Jeon Su-Min there was off the charts. I hope the same happens in Radiant Office.

that's actually what worries me: I simply ADORED the man in "1% of Anything" but it seems like a bit of disservice to his acting skills to play the SAME GUY in 3 CONSECUTIVE dramas, no? or is it just me?

Haha, when ISN'T Lee Dong-hwi a "romanticist at heart"? I feel like he's always playing the same character. Not complaining, I'm glad our heroine's gonna have a supporting buddy by her side. I'm already rooting for this trio! This looks fun.

I think this going to be a fun ride. If this going to be something like FantastiC then I am definitely OK. The highlight of FantastiC was the friendship between the girls, and the heroine and the doctor, although the hero also was so charming.

Yes Ha Suk Jin is just so-so, but lately I can stand with his acting more than than before. For the sake of Go Ah Sung, I hope the rating will be decent. Who knows it can be like Chief Kim? ;)

Go Ah Sung is so cute in this! I am stoked :D

Ha Suk Jin should be able to pull off this role with his eyes closed. It's just a matter of whether he and Go Ah Sung have chemistry. His record is pretty good so far with his leading ladies.

Just hope the terminal illness thing is not going to suffocate everything in the end.

I like Hoya's character description: he's got the best specs yet his potentials are ruined by the severe effects of his anxiety issue at interviews. I really hope he is rather a meek person and not someone who gruffly orders people to return to work and bosses and looks down on those who lack academic and professional credentials.
