Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 6-12, 2017
by HeadsNo2
It’s hard to say if Introverted Boss’s restructuring is paying off when it dropped a hair in its even episode, but for the show’s sake, it would be nice if it saw some improvement for all its efforts. We won’t really know which way it’ll swing until next week, though, so fingers crossed for fans of the show?
Defendant is still killing it, of course, though it stayed stable at 18.6% this week, perhaps due to Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People stealing (sorry) some of the viewership—it’s been steadily rising since its premiere last week, and climbed to 12.3% this week. Not bad at all.
Over in the middle of the week, Chief Kim is doing gangbusters against its competition, and may even be poised to break the 20% mark soon. Beleaguered Missing 9 dropped to below 4%, but picked back up just a bit with its even episode, while Saimdang, Light’s Diary is seeing something of a slump. It’s still netting double digits at least, which is no small feat, but its producers (and actors) had to have been expecting better.
And over on the weekend, Tomorrow With You isn’t doing astronomically well, even on a Friday where the competition is light. It’s still managing to hold its own, but Voice is proving to be a ratings winner (by OCN cable standards), so we’ll have to wait and see if Tomorrow With You has a brighter tomorrow next week.

What a shame if it didn't well! I just finished watching it. It's one of the k dramas that has sense. I watched Goblin because it was highly rated but geez it's too cheesy and I can't go on from ep 5.
Entourage gives you an idea how the entertainment industry in Korea works and at the same time narrates the amazing friendship of 4 guys and the relation between the actor, manager and agent.
This one is nothing like the American version. The Korean version has the heart.

I liked Entourage as well, but not lot of people did actually. There wasn't enough typical korean drama stuff so it was so badly criticized. It was "slice of life" and it was kind of funny to discover that Lee Dong Wook was going trough the same journey as Young bin to be cast as grim reaper in Goblin, the director didn't want him at all. ;-)

The Lee Dong Wook part about wanting grim reaper was just a media play. I hope his decision to be in that drama to be the grim reaper was advantageous for his career in the long run.

LDW is a well known face and not a rookie actor.. lead of so many programs..
Goblin's half the PD team overlapped with Bubblegum.. quite evident from the supporting cast they have
(in excess a repetition of bubblegum crew)
So, i d be surprised if LDW didn't get an unfair advantage in terms of special push and prior information on the characters..
Media play definitely

It was a poorly made drama..
Scripting, characterizations,.. and then was boring..
THe thing is..personal opinion ofc.. what it lacked was "the heart".. didn't care abt them.. except for the other friend who was secretary..
but otherwise everything was meh.. no clear motivations no feelings

I thought "Tomorrow With You" would be doing better than this. I figured Shin Mina would draw the crowds.
I was perplexed by the first episode. Maybe that's when viewers dropped it. But I love Lee Je-hoon, so I hung in there. I was hooked after the second episode. This week's episodes have also been very strong.

I think it has to do with lack of the promotion, less buzz as well. I am not sure how the responds internationally. I am glad to see LJH always promoted the teasers in his IG.TvN needs to do something, both their drama at the moment (together with Introverted Boss) are not doing well in their standard.
I am enjoying this drama regardless of the rating, anyway.

sera thanks for the link. I am kind of loving tomorrow with you. I am not over goblin yet, but TWY is the only drama I am watching now. Also I don't agree that the time travel rules don't work, since if we go back to another oh young , there was no specific rules there either. Also this is a rom-com, not a sci-fi drama where everything needs to be pitch perfect. So the melancholic vibe and the lead male's sadness touches me, he's definitely scared over the fact that future him and his girl are going to die, but then he wants to see if this can work, the marriage, or their relationship. Also shin mina is so cute and perfect in her role, I think this is the first time I am warming up to one of her character, and the chemistry is pretty much amazing too. And these two cut such a pretty picture! How sweet of her going over 'mine' from different angle heheh. Over all, the story is fresh and unique, and there is the mystery factor there, and mostly the pair of the two which is in the center attraction of the drama. I wish it gets more buzz with going weeks.

I've been looking forward to TOMORROW WITH YOU, but am already watching VOICE on the weekend, along with REBEL and SAIMDANG during the week. Between waiting for subtitles and recaps, I'm meeting myself coming and going.
Plus, this week I finished up marathoning SIX FLYING DRAGONS, which had me glued to my laptop when I wasn't live-watching and commenting on the other shows. (Talk about addictive. It's magnificent!)
TOMORROW WITH YOU has a lot of competition for my attention and memory, that's for sure. Among currently airing shows, VOICE and REBEL are neck and neck in their respective genres, with SAIMDANG in third place at the moment.
For me, the early scenes of Ma-rin stumbling around in a drunken stupor were a bit much. I guess I've just watched too many dramas recently with characters who drink to excess, and it wears on me.
I understand why she does it (because of her loneliness, isolation, strained relationship with her horrid has-been stage mother, employment woes, and persecution by journalists and the public for being a former child actor). I get it. Her life sucks. But you don't have to hit me over the head with it, Show.
It hasn't caused me to write off the character, just aggravated me instead of elicited my full empathy. I'm getting over it, and am warming up to Ma-rin now that I've seen the first four episodes. If I never saw this trope again in a Kdrama, it would be too soon. But Hell will freeze over before that happens.
/rant off
There's a lot of exposition to keep track of in the first 4 episodes. Getting a handle on the time travel elements has been challenging for me, so I've just been observing and biding my time until the show sorts itself out. It feels to me as if the plot turned a corner in episode 4 -- or even in episode 3, with a hint as to the identity of the time travel sunbae. Here's hoping that the plot kicks into overdrive soon.
Shin Min-ah and Lee Je-hoon are doing fine. Lee Jung-eun as Ma-rin's obnoxious mom, and Kim Ye-Won as frenemy Gun-Sook, are loathsome; both actresses are earning their paychecks as antagonists.
As for VOICE, I'm a sucker for Jang Hyuk, and am enjoying the police procedural aspects of the show. I'm tickled to see Kim Roe-ha join the cast. The show is dark, gritty, and action-packed, with deadly secrets and conspiracies still to be revealed.
REBEL has been terrific from the get-go, as I expected from the screenwriter of KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. The cast has been turning in solid performances. I love it.
SAIMDANG has its own charms, with dual timelines in Joseon and the present day. It ain't just about academic back-biting. There are conspiracies in both timelines of this show, too.
At this rate I'm going to have to put up my own Wall O' Evidence just to keep all the plots of all the dramas straight.

The problem with Tomorrow with you is that they aren't clear with the rules abiding the time travel.
Earlier they said So Joon would disappear when he sees his future self but later on they made him talk to his future self via gate intercom in ep3. They aren't accurate with the facts and make away with the loopholes in the theory by reasoning that So Joon himself hasn't come across specific situations that jeopardize his special ability.
Din't the same happen with W-Two worlds where people lost interest in second half because the writer kept using loose ends to escape threats? I guess this is one important factor for low ratings.
I do still think the editing could have been better because I waste few seconds trying to grasp the timeline during scene transitions.

TWU has low ratings because it's too melonholic, there is too much in characters from melodrama, too settle directing and watered down storytelling despite fantasy premise. All this years buzzed/not buzzed projects who had that realistic approach in directing and storytelling failed.

Funny enough I find the traveling rules pretty simple and easy to understand. I understood it as So Joon and So Joon (who are in present time like and sort of look alike) can't meet face to face because that would mess with time space reality and also make it hella confusing on ppl "were you just at work writing a paper?" "did I just see you in the street" "are you twins?" and which decisions both make reinforce the future and future outcomes. So in my understanding So Joon and So Joon were able to talk because they were face to face same proximity (just like how things were fine in ep 2 until they met face to face).

I agree with you that the first episode was sort of perplexing. It dropped the viewers into the middle of a situation with little explanation and character motivations were murky. I also didn't get hooked until after the second episode. I'm sad that it's not getting higher ratings because the characters, acting, directing, and music direction are all phenomenal. And such a beautiful melancholic vibe. The plot is quite simple and there is a lot of suspense in figuring out how Marin and So Joon end up where they will be 3 years from now and if it's even possible to change their future.
Unfortunately, I don't think this is the sort of drama you can just pick up in the middle or would catch viewers' attention in this middle. I think you really have to watch it from the beginning to get swept in.

I mean, this drama has everything, from actinh, chemistry to plot.
But i understand a lil bit the flop at ep 4 rating. The dovey lovey scenes didnt help. They need to make it mpre mysterious. But still, twy is a worth watching drama ans deserves more love... Lee jehoon is love. Really.

Actually that escalation of romance had the most profound effect so far on the series. I don't want to reveal the scenes for those who haven't watched so I'm not explaining in depth. All that had happened in ep 4 was to achieve his(So Joon) own selfish motives. The feeling isn't mutual and if you closely watch the ending, you can see his pretence and her originality get translated on screen with that single goodbye.

Where I watch it the summary straight up says he marries her not in love but grows to love her. As for her, I dunno, but to me it seems her self-esteem is so low she's being won over by a cute face, money and a dumb nickname. She's not in love with the real him either.
I did not love the first two episodes because Shin Min Ah doing the cutesy thing makes me cringe. Thirty year olds acting like 15 year olds are hard to take. But ep 3 and 4 are a big improvement.

i finally saw Tomorrow with you.
Marathoned all 4 episodes. i'm really enjoying it. but i can see why their ratings are falling. (btw, the rating for 4rth ep is 1.8)
The show ALMOST does everything right but then falls short.
like - you have time travel which should be a big hook. but there are no cool CGIs or elaborate fantasy world building. You have good actors as side characters but they are not contributing to the plot nor have a compelling story with the leads. You have these funny situations (like her trying to run away when he talked marriage) but there is no snappy witty dialogue to accompany it. etc etc
so close but yet so far.

On the contrary, I like the directing so much. Everything is so simple and not over the top, from the effects down to the background music. The show doesn't force you to feel something, it let us decide what to feel about its scenes. This directing style is a bit similar with some Hollywood romantic movies, IMHO.
But I kinda understand that this simplicity could turn out boring for some people.

its not about simplicity vs jazz. its about building connection with the viewers. getting them emotionally invested in the journey of the show.
For example the best friends of both the leads are so bland. There is nothing simple about having a stock best friend and not giving them a personality and a crackling equation with the leads.
I have yet to see a show that does well without stellar supporting characters. because well written side characters and side stories help bring out the attributes of the leads without hampering the point explicitly.
the show is suffering outside its main impending death conflict because there is nothing going on besides that.

The strength of the support characters is one of the reasons Rebel has done so well, imho.
Veteran actors, given some decent storylines, helps to draw a viewer in. Kim Byung-Ok, Seo Yi-Sook, Son Jong-hak bring out the best.

There are stories which focus solely on the leads and Tomorrow with you is one such drama. IDK whether you have watched all the four episodes but since I'm up to date, I'm telling this. The concept is of a person who has the ability to time travel and how he uses that opportunity to transform his own personal life. The lead clearly stated to his friend that he won't use his advantage to foresee others future. So clearly the show doesn't need to dwell on side characters unless it involves direct interaction with the lead.

February 12, 2017 at 5:40 AM
Well, I'm in the opinion why bring unnecesary subplot to the character that is not supposed to support your narrative purpose? They will prevent you to focus your whole narrative and your show will no longer have purpose and cohesive. It's happen with alot of show. But I agree though, a great writers will find a way to make their side character a functional to their plot and story. And Sageuk genre used to make important side character functional. Tomorrow with You is still 4 episode, and slowly we are start to see a character side giving more important role to the story. I don't think I will classify Tomorrow with you as something who rely so much on two chemistry between the lead because even when they are not together, they are a such strong character on their own.
nchoe
February 12, 2017 at 6:20 AM
@bips99 ah... now I got your point.
But we're still on the early stage of the show. I think it's pretty normal for a drama to keep its focus on the main leads first before digging deeper into the supporting characters conflict. So I guess this is not the problem, or at least not the main one.
However, I do agree with you that the dialogues are a bit weak. Sometimes, I found them lack of... I don't know... oomph? They're just not compelling enough to engage people's attentions or leave deep impressions. I don't know who the writer is, but I guess he/she isn't much of a wordsmith.
missjb

@John I think we can't compare romcom with Sageuk. Saeguk drama stories tends to be more complicated, hence they have so many characters (sometimes, you can't even decide who the main lead is since there are some strong characters in one show) complete with their own story and arc. They often need longer episodes to be able to develop their characters properly, 20 episodes are barely enough. While romcom dramas are often solely focus on the main otp with much simpler conflict to solve.

@missjb Oh... not at all, I personally like the dialogues. I glued to my screen whenever I see the the characters have conversations (I especially like So-joon's bff lines when they're at the bar).
I'm just thinking the dialogues is not kind of dialogues that would make most people attracted to.

I'm older and totally read sci fi and fantasy as well as watch it. But time travel is not my favorite sub-genre. There's so much interesting sci fi and fantasy out there, why get stuck on time travel? I see more upcoming dramas are doing it too. I think it's because they don't have to make up new fantasy sets because theyve already got sageuk sets and costumes, or the gap is only a few years like in TWY. So it's cost-effective sci-fi.

This is information i get from reddit.com/koreanvariety weekly rating post:
“The above is official AGB Nielsen Korea nationwide ratings. Their website has inaccuracies with regular cable ratings.
Naver and Daum have the correct values but can’t be trusted 100% either. They also make mistakes time to time.
Nate’s numbers are the exact same as Daum. Nate adopted Daum’s search engine several years ago.
For cable ratings, the industry commonly refers to the TV+IPTV+satellite rating. Nielsen Korea doesn’t publish those number on their website for whatever reason”

I really want to like Our Gap Soon for Kim So Eun. Watched the first 3 episodes but I can't stand her boyfriend. He's soo childish and she deserves soo much more. Does he gets any better?
Ouch at the ratings of 'Introverted Boss'.

I accidently watch their segment. I had no idea who they were. I marathon all episodes in one take. The first episode is so unique. I laugh so hard through out. The later on is not good as the first but still a great couple.
Im very curious how much of those cheesy lines belong to him or the script. There are not many interview videos of him available. Kim So Eun said he is a weirdo so I really dont know how much of that personality is editting.
For the look I prefer his thinner, long hair, model look.
Our Gap Soon is too long and too real so I cant really watch.

I am watching basically just for Kim So Eun, and sometimes skipping here and there because God it is so repetitive. The main problem between the couples (all couples) are about misunderstanding, lack of communication and yes the main one; lack of money. Good issues, but failure on the part of the writer to make the characters relatable and hence everything become so nonsense.
On question whether it has becomes better, not sure. The things still repetitive, but #SPOILER they do got married recently after all the obstacles yet the other obstacles (and repetitive ones) are waiting. I hope she graduated from weekend drama after this, or if it is weekend drama, choose something good. The title of Our Gabsoon is meaningless anyway, the show is not mainly about her. Should not be named as Our Gabsoon from the very beginning.

Gap-dol gets better, but he will take some time, something like 20 episodes. Also, don't expect to see KSE that much, because there are a lot of characters whose storylines have to be developed throughout the episodes. You'll probably feel the main character is her older sister, however Gap-soon is the one that takes the most "radical" decisions in the whole context.
You'll also have to be patient, because you'll hear and witness many annoying and old-fashioned speeches / behaviors. The series revolves around the generational conflict and I guess it hits the target, as well as living in a situation where you can't afford to spend and spend. Money is the main issue out there.
Though it may be frustrating at times, I personally think a series that makes you feel like this (that makes you feel anything) is worth watching. Our Gap-soon's best merit is that it makes you ponder about some things, manages to be moving and - to a certain degree - relatable. I started watching it for KSE and SJR, but now I'm also interested in the other characters' stories. I wouldn't say these two hours a week go to waste.

I have already dropped Hwarang, Rebel, Missing 9, Saimdang, and Voice. Unfortunately, this week I'll add Tomorrow With You drama to the list. First, I didn't like their video color(?) the video looks like covered by yellow layer. Second, there's so much time traveling that makes me to watch twice to understand what's that. Third, I don't feel the chemistry between the leads (dunno why...).
The only drama's this season that I still watch are Defendant (the story finally pick up at eps 6), Introverted Boss (although their heroin lack 2%, the story line and the hero still make me stayed), and the last that become my favorite drama this season is Chief Kim! ?????? the story line, the actors act, the cinematography, the OST are perfect, I hope they can continue that to the final eps...

I still dont get Goblin. How many times do we have to see tat girl shot by arrow? The amount of flashbacks with super slomo and repeated lines. They spent their budget on overseas shots instead of building more background story in ancient time. And, major turn off, why he has to meet his bride when she is still in high school? I thought the high schook time would go quick, but turned out it last till ep12. After it ended, i didnt want to repet any scene at all and didnt care. Weightlifting Fairy is so much better. I think i now get it what people mean by KES's flimsy writing..
when i was watching it..i would tune in for every episode in both DOTs and Goblin's case..
post ep 7/ i realized DOTS doesn't have much to offer but overall the project worked.. so it was fun WHILE watchng it..
I thoguth Goblin was out of this world awesome.. only to realize when it ended.. i didn't care.. i wasn't moved.. and i didn't care.. it was as ordinary as they come..
And then i recall SG and Heirs..s ame thing.. her heroes are un.. quirky, petty, funny.. and hold the attention.. but then off they go from the screen.. i am left wondering what was that about..
In summary, i thot goblin was great but retrospectively its meh!

Similar thought with mine. I have said before, for me KES is not the best writer, but she knows the formula to make her drama really popular, regardless the flaws and not so quality - DOTS still in talk a lot, even the drama was last year, Goblin still do and many fans still suffering withdrawals, not to mention the parodies for Secret Garden are a lot.. For some productions, tv stations and actors, having a writer with a guaranteed success at least by 50% is a bonus - successful drama will guarantee some commercial values, look at what Goo Yoo is achieving now - tons of CFs and overseas offers for fan meeting etc. I assume the next actor that KES will choose probably Park Bo Gum. Maybe.

There was a big discussion on the news item which was about KES new drama - how PBG is not really her type. She tends to go for more masculine look rather than the flower boy look. plus jo in sung recently said that he wanted to work with her and she had approached him for DOTS. so its probably him or won bin

@bips99 oh I never read anything on that. I just assumed. By the way I thought Song Jong Ki is quite a flower boy type, not the masculine one. Or maybe I am the only one see him a flower boy type? Gong Yoo, Lee Min Ho, and Hyun Bin defnitely masculine type. I doubt Won Bin will be ever back but if KES succesfully made him comeback, she has my respect. If not I hope she is able to bring back Kang Dong Won.
@Kiara you are right. Based on her past patterns, she chose the popular actors as the main leads, and the second leads the underrated ones. Her next project should have Kim Ji Won as the main lead, this girl had worked with her in two projects already. About time for her to land her lead role.

I dont think Kim Ji Won is famous enough to lead KES drama. I think KES formula is bang first episode + popular actors. It likes love at first sight, when you fall in love already you can by pass the flaws.
SJK wasnt the first choice for DOTS so its more like: his time has come, its more about timing than her type.

Like bips99, I also feel like Jo In Sung is a good bet, especially if she's considering doing a sageuk.
Or she might switch it up and choose the most flowery of flower boys. With all her successes, people are paying closer attention to her writing and plot and character tropes (and flaws). To escape being boxed in, she may tweak things around. When people complained about her female characters, she did make an effort to strengthen their characterization.

I dont think KES take risk in actors, small roles maybe. She only take popular actors that she knows will deliver the roles. She has everything plan out from start to finish. With her name now she can get any actors she wants, she wont go for lesser actors. Why take risk when everything else is available?
I watch Kim Ji Won interview on KBS. She said she only want pretty role. Kim Ji Won doesnt stay in the spolight. She has a hit drama, disappear then come back few years later. Kim Ji Won might be popular but she hasnt really make the name for herself yet. She is more like a trending actor than a popular actor.
I search back for Park Shin Hye and Lee Min Ho. They already lead, have small hits before heirs. They already have lots of cfs by the time they got cast.

Oh with you on that.. consecutive successes for years.. is a real talent.. a talent to die for..
at the end of the day, in a profession where writer holds little importance and recognition.. she has create a brand of herself..
And to other saying, she takes big names.. the thing is.. big names want to or agree to work with her. Anyone would love a famous name to headline their drama..it just speaks a lot about KES strength... and her secondary couples/side actors win viewers love not from ep 3/4/8.. but from ep 1 itself.. and she is fair enough to give each character its arc..
And lastly, known faces don't guarantee success.. so i really don't see that as a parameter of success.. these very same faces have headlined dramas with excellent creds and yet failed..
I don't know.. but well.. there is clearly sthg that KES does.. which no one else can..
And in case of her last two dramas, a HUGE factor has been the director. His frames are to die for.. the color, the grandeur of the scenes.. that is what has added max charm
PS: I want to watch NA PD or the guy directing reply series.. team up with KES..
*********
Really??? was DOTs offered to JIS? KES said in some interview that she was super skeptical of SJK.. but once she saw him in uniform she knew he would reign the young hearts..
If she manages to get Won Bin back on screen, she definitely has my respects too.. And with UF being a flop, i thought KES would make it a personal task to relaunch KWB's drama career :)

I think it's simple, why KES's leading girl underutilized. Girls suppose to imagine themselves on the shoes of leading lady. KES turned this trick into perfection. You're beautiful stunt double, who was able to catch attention of chaebol, you're hardworking ordinary school girl, who has two hot guys to do anything just to catch your attention, you're a successful doctor, who is protected by her own handsome (super)soldier, you're a chosen bride and fist love (loool) of 900 years old super powered Goblin. Yeap, female fantasies. Them Korean dramas loves to play on that, that's why anti-heroes as main leads hated.

I am reiterating myself.. but i find this accusation unfair that KES benefits largely because of her male leads.
Rather, she has bolstered career of her male leads.
Hyun bin got his super stardome because of SG and was able to demand the hefty price for ekyll hyde on SG laurels.
KWB literally shot to limelight from heirs.
LMH was known because of BoF (primarily).. got his chinese superstardom thanks to this show..
Gong Yoo - he has always been a star.. and apparently him and won bin being the only two actors with whom KES desperately wants to work..
SJK again.. was popular.. but this insane stardom because of KES..

I know the majority who watches dramas are females, and it's sad to see that females ignoring each others hard work and give all the credit to the male, not only fans or viewers also the writers who wrote those females weak characters are also females, why can't they write a strong independent female lead who doesn't need to depend on the male lead to help her or being overshadowed by the male.
They should set a good example for the young girls to be powerful independent and to stand up for themselves.

I love LHN in Voice too because she's strong and doesn't give in easily despite the harsh atmosphere she's in and being attacked by her superiors even JH character attaked her in the beginning but that didn't weaken her.
Also th female lead in Chief Kim is so confident and smart, and she stands up for her believes.

Yes it's sad and that is why she is not going to change. It works with the majority of the viewers. She'll put all her effort into making the male lead more appealing (cast a good looking actor, popular enough etc etc) because that's what most women tune in to fangirl over.
I even watched the first few episodes of DotS for Song Joong Ki. I started Goblin for Kim Go-eun and ended up riding on the Gong Yoo train too.

After halfway point, I was disillusioned, but couldn't stop. Then after that, it was like waking up from a fevered dream. I'm still perplexed with Goblin (or other tvN Dramas) hitting above 15% then back to 2-5% range on next/others dramas.
Are they only watching the certain show? It seems normal in public broadcast since it's free but people are paying for cable, right? Do they really pay for watching Goblin then unsubscribe later?

Cable subcription is like a mobile phone subscription. You pay the monthly due.
The sad thing about cable TV, it's becoming obsolete with the existence of streaming sites.
E.g. Netflix it's only $8 per month in my country.

Naver and Daum have the correct values but can't be trusted 100% either. They also make mistakes time to time.
Nate's numbers are the exact same as Daum. Nate adopted Daum's search engine several years ago.

I have to say I am a bit sad that TWY isn't doing better I'm the ratings. The last ep hit all the right notes for in terms of the romance. I'm really happy, it's definitely my first time watching a kdrama where the romance feels very adult, and not a cutesy style romance like k dramas tend to go for, pretending that one or two dry kisses is where it stops with people, it's just not realistic (though obviously I get why; S. Korean dramas are very censored). And the female lead's reaction to the male lead's wooing was so ridiculously realistic to me I was laughing so much throughout the ep, so much secondhand embarrassmentioned but so darn true lol. The only thing that was missing from the ep was more insight into the mystery, maybe that's what viewers wanted to see more of? But still, I think this ep was needed to finish all the background info and how we got to this point. I hope the ratings pick up next, I have a feeling (hope) the plot will get better from here.

Not being biased but i really love a calming and mature (in positive way) love story. I find this typical love story really calming and charming with depth of story. Its remind me of the movie called "The Light Between Ocean" which i found cinematically wonderful with beautiful story yet it did not get the attention it deserve.

Lol true! I'm so shocked the ratings are so low. I hope they won't cut down the episodes later. As a Korean, I can see why the general audience won't like it (no witty dialogue or laugh out loud humor), but it's nice watching it alone in my room. I don't know it's very calming, and the privacy gives me space to squeal over how much I love LJH and SMA. I hope the ratings will improve because Ep 5 is going into unpredictable territory.

Hurray Chief Kim. Now even fudging the ratings. This is Big victory of an Underdog. Comedy shows usually end up as sleeper hits and from 8% to 16% jump in 2 weeks is quite big one. Stole audience of Missing 9.
Missing 9 - Missing all the right beats to capture the attention of SK's Citizens. Our poor 38 Task Force scriptwriter. Only if aired on TVN on monday and My Shy Boss on wednesday, either on SBS or KBS. Not on MBC at all.
Rebel - is quite convenient story so far but it has your josean era's honest man's journey from Conman turned small community leader.
Rebel = Innocent. Both shows have minor issues but both have quality material too.
Tomorrow With You - is a big time wastage. Characters are such a turnoff and story isn't something to vouch for. Kiss scenes, bed scenes are just your softcore porn. Its situation reflects in ratings easily.
Voice - has too many of gory scenes. Like many others i was unable to digest those scenes.
Father I'll Take Care of You - Wait 2 more weeks. Parents story is far better than any couple romance.

Maybe some people prefer dead fish kisses. Or deer in the headlights. But i dont.
I don't see anything wrong with the kisses in TWY. The premise is that the hero will marry the heroine early on. Then these kind of scenes are not surprising. Eps1-4 merely sets the main story of them cheating death and completely falling in love.
PS: If that's softporn then in what category would the passionate scenes in Oh Hae Young Again fall?

yeah, i'm befuddled too. if that's soft core porn, I guess what we know as soft core porn is like super hard core and hard core is now diamond core? Maybe american softcore porn is different from softcore porn in other countries?
Maybe I watch too many movies and American shows, when people use the word bed scene, I imagine nakedness, passionate kissing, sexual movements, and the whole body being filmed (though strategically covered up) . The TWY "bed scene" so far is just two characters tenderly kissing while lying down and fully clothed. Only their head and shoulders were filmed. But since such scenes are so rare in kdramas, I'm guessing a lot of people just call them "bed scenes". The way the drama is filmed and the mood does make all scenes seem more emotionally intimate, which did heighten the intimacy of that kiss scene.
Aside from that scene, they kissed one other time outside, tenderly, slowly, while standing outside in an open space. Basically your typical kdrama kiss of the non-accidental variety. If there are hot kiss scenes I've missed, I definitely want to know ;)

The kiss scene and bed scene is Sojoon trying to have a baby with Marin asap to save both their lives (or mainly his). Maybe you missed the main plot and all these small hints are going over your head? I don't think these two scenes were time wastage. It was significant and the scenes were realistic. No dead-fish-kisses please. Sojoon might like Marin but he's definitely not in love with her, and so to rush the courtship, get into bed on the first day they made it official and marry within 3 months shows how desperate he is. He only has 2 years to make a baby and for baby to be born. Technically he only has just over a year since baby will be in the womb for 9 months. Ep 4 had quite a sad tone overall.
I am quite enjoying TWY.

okay, first:
to be quite frank, I don't mind if it's soft porn as long it has Lee Je Hoon in it. lol
second:
I never thought of the kiss and bed scenes as soft porn because the romance doesn't feel exploited or sold purely for fanservice. the drama doesn't need that at all, and in fact, those kiss scenes and bed scene are germane to the plot.
third:
those scenes are filled with tenderness, not eroticism. they hardly count as porn.

I think people just really want to see Lee Young Ae in hanbok and ep 6 give plenty of that, she looks breathtaking, I mean those skin is that good,
Saimdang gives a whole different vibe cause the main character are older, have kids so there's no fantasy romance or working through the muddy road that usually hooked younger viewer and the slow build up doesn't do much for many people.
They have muddy road but it seems like their life is set up and there are not many hurdles to care unless you invested Jiyoon/Lee young ae present time fight and saimdang's life journey.

I am enjoying Tomorrow With You so so so much (it's my new drama crack) and wish it had higher ratings. Alas, I tend to like shows that don't get much buzz and are low in rating (Solomon's Perjury, Dear My Friends, Age of Youth etc). I am really enjoying everything about the drama (the cinematography, the acting, storyline, chemistry between the leads) and especially like it's soft, slow going, melo feel to it.
Again, this is not a rom-com as it was advertised (which may be why it's ratings are so low) and the directional style imho feels different from the PDs two previous works (High School King of Savvy and Oh My Ghostess). The feels more dark, melo, simplistic, with less flash, zany elements, and big LOL moments.
Someone mentioned "soft core porn" I hardly think more than one kiss that are not dead fish lips peeks, caresses, and bedroom scene (omg, 30 something year old adults have sex!?! babies aren't made from backhugs, piggy back rides, and hand holding!?!) are hardly soft core porn, and it actually fits into the plot. Things feel rushed because it is rushed and is not all done from sincere or genuine 100% feelings because that is one of the major plot points of the story. It's basically forced co-habitation that we all know will eventually turn into genuine love for the hero, with time traveling and maybe life and death for one or both, stakes thrown in.
I agree with others that the side character could be more interesting (I don't care at all for the frenemy and her obviously going to be rouble husband, nor do I think much on the female friend and her father. I adore ahjussi. So Joon's BFF, and Ma Rin's one genuine true blue friend) but I mostly watch for the leads and their romance so I don't mind it too much (and I also have faith the writer will eventually get into them because I have seen some hints of set up).
Eh, different strokes for different folks. It won't be the first (nor last) drama to not have the ratings number to match it's quality/goodness.

I am enjoying this drama as well. I love the film style of this one. All the long takes. The muted colors. The placement of the camera. I'm loving it.
Others find it boring, but here I am invested with the private conversations they have. I'm fascinated with all the subtle movements of their hands, their eyes. The meaning behind the words they let out. They are fascinating to me.
There is a lot of subtlety with this drama. And SK viewers hate subtlety. They like their plots over the top and in your face, like Goblin and their PPLs. Thus, I dropped that one.
I wish for higher ratings, but I'm perfectly fine with what they want to tell. I hope they don't edit the drama. I hope they don't put annoying OSTs. Their piano background music is lovely. It doesn't take me away from the story.

Sharing your thoughts on TwY. Indeed, there are more folks who like in-your-face, formulaic stories. But it is the power of good story telling that makes one question or doubt - is he sincere or not? is it true or not? Different strokes for different folks. But we have to acknowledge the hard work put into the show by the production team. Just sad it is not getting the love of its local audience. I also like the subtle instrumental music.

I've wondered sometimes if it's better to have a mediocre beginning and have the drama get better with each episode or have a great beginning with the drama getting progressively worse. Personally, I'd like a series to get better with each episode, but I guess in terms of ratings, I think it's crucial to have a slam dunk beginning.

Hmmm Saimdang is a bit of a disappointment. I am still watching but I don't have much hope.
The positive is the cinematography is beautiful. I actually loved the idea of two mature leads, but I don't think they capitalized on that idea at all. We didn't see the main adult couple meet until episode 5 and it was imo so anti-climactic. That meeting in the garden when he was drunk could have been a real moment but it just fizzled. It should have been fraught with emotion or passion or something, but I just felt like he whined and she lectured....blah.
