Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 20-26, 2017
by HeadsNo2
Defendant hasn’t managed to beat the record it already set for itself, but it stuck firmly to that very impressive 22.2% this week, which should still count as a win. That meant that Hwarang was left to finish its run at an okay 7.9%, while Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People saw a small jump upward to 11.5%, which seems well deserved.
Meanwhile, Chief Kim managed to break its own record at 17.8% with its odd episode, but just barely. It’s still the biggest player in the Wednesday-Thursday slot, with Missing 9 barely in the running and Saimdang, Light’s Diary at least getting double digits in its even episode.
But the big premiere of the weekend goes to JTBC’s Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, which started off plenty strong at 3.8%, but seemed to skyrocket to 5.8% in its second episode. It’s a big deal for the show itself, but also a big deal for JTBC, since their recent dramas haven’t been high earners as far as numbers are concerned, though they’ve been critically acclaimed. But with Do Bong-soon, it seems like JTBC may be able to give tvN a run for its money, especially with Tomorrow With You underperforming by the network’s usual standards (the two aren’t competing in the same time slot, but on the same days). Best of luck to all the weekend shows, since the competition has just gotten fiercer.

Wow, SWDBS is off to a very impressive start. I need to open my 4th dimension door to start this one, I've heard plenty of compliments so far. A bit sad that Age of Youth hadn't been able to get this type of rating then.
TvN please don't do anything to TWY, it's not a failureee!

SWDS is soo amazing, i just wish it doesnt focus too much on the thriller side, but damn it can really give you the creeps. I agree with what you said about how TvN should not do anything to TWY, although I am pretty bummed about how the leads keep on fighting and making up, this kind of setup makes it so real. How I wish they get the real ratings they deserve. I mean c'mon the acting is spot on. And I keep on wishing that Shin Min Ah and Lee Je Hoon get together in real life, but sadly that wont be happening anytime soon.

I think that there are some real life issues that people can bear to see and some that they don't. The same applies to me. Real life examples of people struggling to make ends meet, yes, but a couple quarreling and making up too frequently, no. Personally, I like my on screen couples to be happy and lovey dovey. They can bicker and argue, but not quarrel - especially if it's a rom-com.
I think it's also expectancy. If I know that it's a melo I'm watching, I come prepared to cry and watch heart-breaking scenes. If it's suspense, I come prepared to have my nails bitten. And if it's rom-com, I want rom-com. I suppose some people might feel that too much quarreling in rom-com makes it neither romantic or comedic?

I hope that tvN will not look into TWY's ratings, and consider its huge following online. I beileve that TWY is great. It's just that it was not a good timing for tvN to show it since they were piitted against networks which airs news programs.

so I've watch tomorrow with you and I somehow agree with the rating, I am sorry, In my opinion it's good but it's not demanding me to watch it if I got other things to do.
It's in the middle of good promise with nothing to look on when I realised I don't care about any of them, yes they are handsome and beautiful, I can looked at them when I see the drama play but watch it by myself just make me confused of the purpose of the story,
Idk the end goal I wanted from the cause I don't symphatised with the problem itself,
It's feels like Gobllin without the chliffhanger

I agree but a drama that can't draw you in become forgettable and I think this is the case with TMY,
it wasn't forgettable because it's bad, just feel like it drifted away from the viewer,
we have seen many trainwreck drama but since it can be ridicolous and makjang, it actually get attention even if if you keep pulling your hair watching it.
I plan to watch ep 8 today but then it just so hard for me and then It occur to me on why people don't watch the drama too,
especially if you have other drama in line or exciting variety show to watch

In my case, it was so hard in earlier episodes to watch, but after watching epi 7 I feel I can stay until the end. Something about Ma Rin and So Joon that I have started to be invested.
Maybe it works better if the episodes are shorter like 10 or 12 episodes so the story will be a little bit faster.

I agree, It has good cast, nice writing, directing is also not bad, but it is simply boring and for some reason you don't care about main conflict.
I tried to watch it a few times and stopped because of the scene where they have the first breakfast as a married couple. I know it was supposed to be cute but Ma-rin making So-Joon eat her cooking was too much for me. He didn't like it and showed it, but Ma-rin made a scene so he would eat something he definitely didn't wanted, and all for what? Because she expected their first breakfast to look differently.
At that moment I wanted to ask, is she happy because she got married or because she got married TO So-Joon? I know it might sound harsh, but I watched this episode and I don't believe that a married person who is supposed to be thinking about "us" is so oblivious to how disinteresed/not so happy her partner is. When Ma-Rin said she wanted to be happy with someone who loved her, she said truth, she didn't need to love someone in return, if only he loved her it would be enough.
I think thats why I stopped watching, because why would I want for their relationships to work when even they don't want/need that?

Your analysis is spot on! And it's also the reason I got disenchanted with the drama. Marin is in love with her idea of love and marriage, not necessarily with her husband .

But isn't this exactly what they were aiming for. The premise speaks of both of them really faling in love with eachother after marriage. I see it as much a journey for Ma Rin as for Seo Joon that they're both falling for real for each other.

Thank you! This drama is focusing on the not-so-glamorous aspects of marriage - when two people who barely know each other rush into marriage and the ensuing disconnect / slew of misunderstandings. If people tune in expecting cutesy and fan-service, then they're bound to get disappointed.

Wow!!! I'm just baffled by this. What you observed is exactly what the drama wants to convey to you. That's the underlying message of the drama. They are in fact saying to you, "Don't start a relationship this way.".
The reason you stopped watching is the same reason I am continually enamored with this drama. I want to know what it takes for a relationship to last. Is getting married the end of it? Or just the start? What happens when you start living together? What adjustments need to be made for it to work?

Exactly. There have been so many times I wanted to tap both So Joon (x100) and Ma Rin on the head, but usually for different reasons. I think what I like more is how what it takes for a relationship to work is married--all pun intended--with foreshadowing that is now paying off.

I resonate with this,
when you can't get behind the idea of them together since this is romance driven/couple driven
why watch anymore?
the drama will make them a couple but as a viewer I can't get around that idea and I don't emphasised with them personally either,
so no point to watch for me

I wonder if it's hard to get on board with TWY because you either have to buy in to wanting the couple to be together from the get go, or you don't. Whereas in other dramas, the relationship and the feels develop so you start shipping them organically. In TWY, you're dropped off deep into their relationship without really knowing why the two have a strong attraction for each other, so all this mystery or going to the future, or attempts to change the future, just doesn't seem compelling. Like you say- it's hard to care about the main conflict.
If, however, you're already on board with- I need for this relationship between Sejoon and Marin to work (like I am)- all of it seems intriguing and well developed. Like even though I didn't trust Sejoon until episode 7, I was always under this idea that I needed the relationship between the two of them to work, so I way always wound up and anxious when it felt like something terrible would happen to them. Not sure why for some this works, and for others- it doesn't. It may be a storytelling flaw.

I think you're spot-on on with this. These characters began their relationship in a way that essentially exposed all their flaws to the viewers and I think that may be why the beginning is rough for this one. Everyone wants a root-able, fun, sweet romance, but their relationship is already fraught with so many issues. I personally think their banter is plenty fun and their relationship plenty sweet (now). But it's also painful and difficult for them to navigate because they really did get married before they should have.
It also helps that I actually like the leads. I went from finding So-joon a compelling character with plenty of room for growth, to really feeling proud of him this week. I also appreciate that he isn't changing in all the right ways yet. He still makes mistakes, while fretting about the future, but I felt that came from a more human place this week. And I love Marin. She has far more strengths than flaws and is actually one of my favorite female leads lately.
If anything, I'd just really want to urge people to at least watch until episode 7, because, well, both episodes this week took things exactly where I hoped: to a place of vulnerability and growth. But, then again, I understand that this show just isn't for everyone.

I think it has also a lot to do with narrative, like I know too much? Show gave too much attention too its weakness?
If it started with them being married and him saying in voicecover why he married her I would be okey with that, but I had to spend 5 hours of my life for....finding reasons to dislike them? Not ship them? I donno, what did we find in those 5 hours that couldn't be said in five minutes and in few flashbacks? If I saw them together, thought that their life looks perfect and then found they had problems I would think "but...but there is this sincerity in this moment, right? Don't break my ideals, I belive you could become the couple I thought you are in first 5 seconds"
Here I see them and think "it was wrong from the start, they spend few months together and still don't love each other, they know enough about each other but still don't see the actual person in their spouse, isn't it a good enough sign to stop the relationship which can't work any worse?"
I also remember this one sentence in dramabeans recap about DOTS, that the best part about its OTP is that they could walk away any moment and forget about the others existence, but they choose not to. In tons of dramas heroes don't get this chance but I still ship them, because I believe if they had it they would still choose to stay together, here I simply don't see that.
Sorry for my rant, I don't want to ruin someones watching experience, I guess I was too confused about my dislike to this seemingly good drama and needed to find reasons why even my huge love toward Lee Je Hoon couldn't make me watch it ever again

@Nerdy
'Here I see them and think “it was wrong from the start, they spend few months together and still don’t love each other, they know enough about each other but still don’t see the actual person in their spouse, isn’t it a good enough sign to stop the relationship which can’t work any worse?” '
Isn't that how many real relationships happen? You meet up, fall in love so fast mostly because who you are at that particular moment and just decide to start your life on a whim? Am not advocating such relationships nor am I saying they are not stupid to rush so fast. But this is exactly how few marriages I see around me is like.
Take away the time traveling part. Its just two people who meet each other, sparks fly, they have something in common which pulls them together, they seem to like each other more and more - so they decide to just marry and start their life. One person goes with it because she is fascinated with idea of marriage and other person goes with it because he is always looking at the future, the next step - if marriage is one on his list to tick off in his life, he does it.
Am sorry but it just feels too real to me. Maybe its cultural difference? Marrying after years of commitment knowing each and everything about each other happens everywhere(which I feel is more of norm in west) but marriages like these are way too common in east.
That doesn't mean they are failed partnerships or uneven marriage. Any relationship is not about how long you have known each other or how much you know, its about how you stick with them till end. Its about how much of yourself you put into it. How much you fight for it. And how much you are there for each other.
Ma Rin and So Joon were not the best of lovers or partners and they did rush into marriage, but to me - they seem to be the ones who will make it till the end.

That is an interesting theory, although I'm not sure whether I agree with it or not. Maybe because I tend to think that many kdrama relationships don't develop that organically - it's flaw I've seen in recent years especially, since the main couple is bound to get together, the production feels like it doesn't have to spend much time on getting us to that point. For me TMY is the opposite, because we get to see the difficult aspects of their relationship such that when they actually decide not to end it (if they do), it will feel earned to me. But it looks like some people find it hard to get invested in the couple when they are having so many problems despite technically being together already. I personally see it as more similar to a contract marriage or fake dating situation, where they start a relationship for the wrong reasons and then eventually find that they want to make it real. So maybe that's why the fact that So-joon had ulterior motives and Ma-rin was just desperate for someone to love her doesn't bother me? Idk.

It's interesting that the scene you particularly didn't like is one that has been done before in like a million dramas. I can't even count how many times I've seen a female lead who is bad at cooking and a male lead who pretends to like her food anyway so as not to hurt her feelings. Honestly I don't really find that type of thing "cute" because I prefer it when people are honest with each other. But why is this scene more objectionable between a couple that has a seriously flawed relationship than with a typical kdrama couple whose every interaction is meant to be cute?

I think I felt like what @cooler said below,
it's good for a movie but it's slow and the more they drag the "idk why they did that and keep circling the question" after few episode, it feels enough,
no payback unless you invested to the interaction, in this case, I am not,
I simply had enough the "realistic portrayal" of relationship from them.
It's one thing to see people fight and relationship work in real life but seeing it over and over again in a drama without an exact payoff (in meaning would they be together that I can't buy into), feels like a sad sitcom.
Sitcom who once funny but the joke is repetitive and you don't laugh anymore.
It still a good joke, just not funny, it stops giving you pleasure by watching so why continue?
sort of that feeling.

@reset What you said makes sense and I totally understand that it might not be the type of thing everyone enjoys (as long as we can also agree that some of us do enjoy it), but I am a little confused as to how that relates to my comment about the cooking scene? Did you accidentally reply to the wrong person, or am I missing something?

February 26, 2017 at 1:58 PM
Not really, what you said is done in tons of dramas, but here it is different, So-Jong didn't pretend, he said that he didn't like this food, he even said it might be made from outdated ingredients. He ate it only after Ma-Rin made big deal out of it and made So-Jong feel like he did something wrong. In other shows main guy simply keeps quite about it, so you don't blame female lead for adding more (she can't be a mind reader).

@Nerdy Okay, I see what you mean now. I guess I just still don't see it as being all that different - I mean, it's not unnatural to be hurt when someone spits out the food you made for them and tells you it's terrible. I guess she could have smiled and pretended it didn't bother her at all, but I don't really see how that is preferable to him pretending he was joking and eating the food after all.

It's TOO slow. It has the drowsy, semi-artsy independent movie feel to it. That's okay for a 2 hour movie. It's a drag for a 16 (20, Idk) episode drama. Even while I'm watching, I find myself acting like a mini-Sojoon--easing over to DB for a sneak peek at the recaps to see what's going to happen.
The character interactions seem true to life (for the most part.) I find myself laughing at the dialogue (on occasion.) But... it's like this was supposed to be a movie, but the writer/director didn't want to have to cut anything, so they pitched it as a drama.

I am happy for the cast and crew of SWDBS. I also find it hilarious that it was able to achieve its rating goal in just Episode 1. They must have not expected to get those numbers in just week one. I have this mental image of PBY, PHS, and JS holding a meeting and planning how to make good on their ratings promise and setting new ratings goal. LOL Congrats to the cast and crew!

I wasn't sure about PHS as lead since I love JiSoo more but I should say I am really impressed about PHS. This is the first drama I see him in ( didn't want to check Hwarang because of the average reviews at DB) but something about his acting, smile and mannerism is attractive and really magnetic.
May be I am falling for the umpteenth actor and in for another crush period but hey my love for an actor is never ever based on his popularity( like LMH who I don't hate but don't appreciate as a magnetic actor) but based on his talent. I must admit that PHS has that pull! I would also like to see Jo Jung Suk on screens soon!!

JTBC has been waiting so long for this to happen. In the recent years, JTBC has been the last among all General Cable networks (alongside with Channel A, MBN and TV Chosun) ratings wise getting only 1% average. Their dramas are not as good as tvN's ratings wise, though they get netizens'attention. But now, they're variety shows are rating 4%, their news and current affairs programs are just behind KBS, and they are now getting more than 2% daily average rating. I think, it's about time for JTBC to shine in the drama kingdom. I really appreciate their effort in taking risks.
I remember the time when the public and the critics of the government had feared JTBC when it was launched together with the other General Cable networks. Now, JTBC is the most loved network, and South Koreans are now giving the love that the network deserves.

But Channel A, MBN, TV Chosun have never had any hits, at least JTBC have had a few over the years. They've had quite few shows over 1% but SWDBS is the biggest hit they've had in a long time. tvN had a few back to back hits that seemed to be a catalyst for growing interest in all their content. Hopefully the same happen will happen with JTBC. ^^

Father I'll Take Care of You deserves higher rating. Dont know what is wrong with the low rating, it is basically has all the elements of weekend family drama. Dong Hui-Song Jeon are cuties yet so pitiful. SPOILER : Library kiss this week! lol? The only daughter of the family coming back, she is so arrogant, just like the second son. Jeong Eun has become my favourite character, looks like she will be the first one to puzzle everything later.
Our Gabsoon will not get more than 20% rating, I guess. I believe if the drama just followed the original air time, they will hardly stays 10 digits. Anyway, cannot wait for Father Is Strange to kick off. Here is the first teaser if anyone is curious?

I honestly feel like i'm the only one thats obsessed with Tomorrow with you. The show is so beautifully crafted, with their relationship in the centre, and I honestly feel as though I am growing with them. Their relationship is so raw, and hilarious to watch. I don't understand their ratings.
And I've also been looking forward to Strong Woman, as I love Park Bo Young's previous shows, but I just didn't connect with the first episode. I felt like the show was in fast pace, and missed the opportunity to give a story to the characters. I didn't get the chance to fall in love with the characters, instead we were driven directly into the plot of her being strong, and that's it.

I absolutely love Tomorrow With You but I do understand the ratings. The drama is slice of life with a touch of fantasy. It doesn't rely too much on cliffhangers. Nothing "big" or "grand" happens. It simply two people getting to know each other, struggling with their marriage. It's real life. Basically, something you wouldn't expect from a Korean drama.
But that's the reason why I love it. The simplicity of it.

Same here. I love Tomorrow With You. So much depth in every episode.
I understand that people in Korea will not watch this. That I get. What I don't get is the people who did watch few episodes of this drama, yet didn't grasp the underlying message it wants to say. I mean it's right there in front of you.
This is also the reason I am having problems with Strong Woman. It's not the fault of the drama. It's more of a preference. I want Strong Woman to be more than a fluffy rom-com. Is there an underlying message it wants to say?

I think it is okay if dramas don't have underlying messages, since they are first and foremost for entertainment. However if a drama happens to be good and entertaining, and has depth and an underlying message than I consider that a plus. Tomorrow With You falls in that category. I think maybe the reason it is not more popular is because the male lead is not very charismatic, even though his character is great (and I still can't get a proper handle on who he is). This is the type of show that has the potential to be a masterpiece, but it is not fast-paced so I think that's another reason as to why it might not be very popular with k-viewers.
As for Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, this drama is pure silliness and fluff mixed in with crime thriller, this is the type of show that feels so disconnected from reality, and like it's happening in some sort of hyper world, but it still is very entertaining and intriguing. So I'm glad that it is doing so well in the ratings, and PHS is very charismatic.
In the end, I have come to accept that my taste as an international viewer differs a lot, for example all the popular dramas of 2016 I couldn't get through the first few eps of, like "Doctors" (ugh), "Romantic Doctor", "Goblin" (even though I like Gong Yoo), DOTS, and now in 2017 the makjang "Defendant".
I at least tolerated and fairly liked "Legend of the Blue Sea" and "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds" though I didn't finish any of them, but I watched a good chunk of them. The other popular drama I liked was "Oh Hae Young Again" I watched this till the end. However I stand by what I said that "Tomorrow with You" is a lot better than OHYA, and has more depth and more romance and more mystery.

I don't care if people say l LJH is called less charismatic or whatever. His acting stood out the most. Tomorrow with you is the drama that has my heart right now. I have been constantly liking it from the first episode, but after this week's episodes, I am a gone girl. It has this subtle way of shifting between humor and melancholy with flawed characters and the OTP moments are just so realistic especially when they fight, they feel so much like a real couple. I am actually thinking of commenting in lee he joon's or shin mina's any IG post to let them know how much I love this drama and to show my support. :P I hope they can read english, though.

Yay so much love for TWY. I really like the low key realistic feel of this show and how it is basically making me understand so much about married relationships directly or indirectly. That said, I guess people were put off with the time travel theme. Because it brings lots of questions and plot holes but the character's are so real...and the dialogues, I enjoy them so much. They are so simple as if everyone is having a regular conversation but still sound so deep.
I still think they could have linked the present and future in a more intriguing way because where I am losing interest is the time travel part not the one with their current relationship.

I have to disagree that underrated in rating always mean it's not the time or no one saw how good it is, maybe it just wasn't that good,
low coverage/audience make this "underrated/low rating = gem" argument hard to refute,
especially when people who didn't like categorised as "it just not your style",
I hope that doesn't imply "you just not fans of the actors"

I think it's a heck of a lot of more of a reach to say that everyone who likes an underrated drama must be a fan of the actors than to say that those who don't like it don't care for the style.

February 26, 2017 at 1:13 PM
to be fair, part of the drama's following/watcher that has low rating have a lot to do with the actor,
how many times do we see
"xxx is the only saving grace of the drama"
"I watch this because XXX is just my style and even if I don't like the other actors and the characters"
how many times we saw an appearance boost the drama rating,
many people stay for the low rating drama for the actors, that's is an actual truth
and people/commenter who don't like it get judged as "don't like the style" ,
but only a saying to appear polite even if it shown that the commenter does like the style/genre but the drama is just bad, so the fans counter attack with saying
"oh it's not your style"
"the acting is not your style"
rather than admit that the large reason of them to stay is the actors
so people who don't follow the actor has less baggage to stay, hence the conclusion,
fan can't admit that drama just don't executed itself well and resort to label the critics as such while behave the same

I would say Introverted Boss is a drama I stick to for the lead actor.
But not Tomorrow with You. Many fans, both internationally and in Korea, have praised the show for the acting, directing, and story. Especially the recent episodes. It could even be a favorite show in the making for me and many others. Even netizen comments reflect this, while Introverted Boss comments are mostly about Yeon Woo-jin.
http://netizendrama.blogspot.com/2017/02/spoilers-tomorrow-with-you-ep08.html
I think this does indicate that TWY is a quality show that simply doesn't appeal to certain people. I'm not really judging those who dislike the show though, because I can see how some scenes that I find riveting, might be boring to others. But I do think there are some people who would like TWY if they gave it more of a chance and that seems to be the general feeling among many fans here.
Of course, I am going to think it's just not some people's style of show. It isn't an insult or a bad thing and it's not like I'm undermining your opinion. I can accept that you think this drama is bad, but I shouldn't be forced to accept that when I find it wonderful. So, just different tastes. Simple as that :)

You say that comments like "people don't care for the style of this drama" are judgmental, but isn't saying "people are only watching for the actors and don't want to admit it" even more judgmental...? I'm aware that there are people who will watch a drama they don't otherwise like for a favorite actor, but it's also an undisputed fact that people have different taste. I don't think there is anything wrong with pointing that out, and I think it's much more plausible explanation for why some dramas have a cult following despite low ratings. Although that could be because I'm not the type of viewer who fangirls over actors, so I don't really understand that mentality. But I doubt it.

Eh.. I see a lot of comments with underrated dramas where there is ways sweeping generalization on why its not doing well, from the style to Korean people not liking it because it isn't comical, grand and makjang and it's too realistic, and it comes of like a back handed compliment. And I've seen those comments over and over again with TWY that I can help but roll my eyes. I'm guilty of it with beautiful mind however looking back at the drama I can see why it didn't do well and the issues with it.

Just dont get yourself sad on the rating. The rating itself didnt represent the whole viewers, and I believe (or I want to believe, exactly) that Knetizens still watching this drama online. Saying "the world wasn't ready" was evidently a poor choice of words. I was venting. It was coming from a feeling of frustration that most networks etc. of TV shows in Korea and the US have with ratings. I should have just left it to Korea instead of saying the world.
Some shows are judged as objectively bad, but at the end of the day there are many which are judged as such which have some following. TV shows are art and whether people like them or not is based on a subjective experience/assessment. I agree with you that the ratings in Korea do not represent the shows entire viewership, and I have held and expressed a similar stance to yours regarding Knetizen's viewership. It's just that it's becoming increasingly frustrating when so many show's I've liked get hit with low ratings domestically. I would argue based on my viewing experience that I can see why the ratings were so low for some, e.g. Hwarang which had some writing issues, Entourage which wasn't properly adapted for the Korean pallet, 1% which had some stiff competition and was on a cable network, WFKBJ which went up against LotBS, TMLiOH which went up against Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, and Introverted Boss which was just a mess to me. Introverted Boss and WFKBJ both show how ratings matter and don't matter at the same time. In the case of the former, they were willing to try to make changes to the script in an attempt to boost ratings. In the case of the latter, they said to hell with the ratings, this is our story, a story we stand firmly behind. If your make changes things can become worse or better than they were before, gaining and/or losing people in the process, and possibly fracturing the story.
The other reason why I said cited timing is based on a totally subjective reason. There is only so much of a particular genre I can handle at any one time. For me, TWY is totally refreshing. It's a little more on the adult side where people actually have sex instead of insinuating the act, where hubris is amplified through time travel, where characters are deeply flawed and nuanced, where the actors are really quite good, and where we see what happens in marriage as opposed to just the courtship--well, in this show's case the courtship happens in marriage as well. lol. It just feels like a lose lose situation with the shows that take a chance sometimes or aren't as straight forward, or aren't light enough or are too light. It is at these times that I take solace in the online viewership numbers on sites like DramaFever. I get really happy to see my favourite show at the time that's not doing so hot in Korea getting some love and climbing into the top 10. But then I'm reminded--and I could be and hope that I'm wrong--that domestic ratings help drive content. Sigh. This is what gives me hope for Netflix and hopefully other's getting into the game. Hope my rambling makes sense. lol.

I have dropped all shows except Chief Kim and Missing 9.
I've diverted all of my free time towards - High Kick 3 so can't say much about this week.
I think start of 2017 has given some lesson to production companies. Romance can't always lead you ahead. Major hits of 2017 have no romance at all. Love isn't life, it's just a part of life. That's why Romantic Kim was able to attract the audience. And its not like they do romance any better. All the forced scenes, forced physical proximity, nonsensical events, not much character progression. Its better if these shows are going down. Hopefully, This will force the production companies to acknowledge the IQ of the audience

I've just finished watching SWDBS. The show is fun and entertaining but not amazing. Yet. Ji Soo again reminds me of why I've liked him since the first time I saw him on screen. The only anomaly was him in Moon Lovers. First time, I am watching Park Hyung Sik. Can't say much at the moment but I like him and he looks like the type who doesn't overact. There's this tendency to do so in comedic moments but he's funny without trying hard to be.

I agree, definitely not for now. The thing about Ji Soo in Moon Lovers wasn't just his poorly written character as most of them were. His acting was lacking and he came across as really awkward. But I love him in everything else that I saw.

I want to say Hwan Ki (Introverted Boss) is really a husband material. I have said it before, but I want Chief Kim as my colleague or superior, and Hwan Ki to be my life partner. Everytime Hwan Ki cooking something I seriously want it. He is an observer, cute... so many things. Chief Kim will be very cool as my boss, I need him. He is very good with ppl and he works smart, not hard heee?
Done with my rants. lol. Oh should I find space for So Joon (TWY) too. ?

every time i watch tomorrow with you, i feel like reading a romantic novel or diary from someone,it so private and personal.
maybe is too slowly but sure they build story (i love the way they honesty to tell truth about marriage is not a joke, not even fairly tale),and i love how they build character and chemistry,so believable
it's sad if you think about the rating ,maybe not all people get patient with the alur but yeah it's not safe for underage viewer.
i just wish tvn not breaking my heart, please don't ruin the quality or episode.

i wonder how Perfect Wife will kick off next week? If it is able to start at least at where Hwarang finished, it is good enough. Especially facing two strong competitors. I am not interested with the male leads but I love the drama with strong female leads so I will check this out too. Chief Kim taught me a good lesson - to expect the unexpected. Who knows this show may do well too.

I know next to nothing about Perfect Wife except that it's taking over Hwarang's slot but it will be very tough going up against Defendant and Rebel. Despite Hwarang being a disappointment, it had a loyal following. There were also pretty boys to look at. If Perfect Wife can get Hwarang's ratings, it will be no small feat.

I just started Rebel and it's so AWESOME! It's 30 episodes..too bad it's going against Defendant then Lee Bo-Young's comeback Whisper (Punch writer and director). Otherwise the ratings would be higher and it would be a bigger hit. The directing, writing, story and acting are all solid. I literally caught up in one sitting.

Already, Rebel has exceeded my expectations. I was thrown off by the trailer and promotional pictures. I thought Yoon Kyun Sang looked terrible(thanks to The Mane!) and everything seemed tacky.
I am not a saeguk person and it was Six Flying Dragons that got me started in this genre. So my references aren't many but this point, Rebel has surpassed Moonlight for me in terms of story. Don't get me wrong, Moonlight was a very well executed show, the cast was awesome and everything was so pretty. But it lacked a certain oomph which saeguks like 6FD did. It's expected because the genre was more youth romance than leaning towards tradititonal saeguk.
Rebel is shaping up very nicely. I am so piqued now and vested as well with regards to the characters. I hope it will become another 6FD for me. For a show without hallyu or big names, its ratings are already good.

Moonlights was more on youthful sageuk, I also was not able to watch it since it is not my favourite genre. I love serious sageuk, and SFD was tha last sageuk I love. Thank God Rebel is doing great

Lol..yes, the trailer and promotional pictures didn't do it justice! It definitely kept me away, which was why it took me longer to check it out, but I'm hooked now.
I'm not a sageuk expert (like Kiara and others here) nor have I watched a truly traditional sageuk, but my favorites are Damo, Queen Seonduk and Chuno. I agree, Moonlight was very well done, but it lacked the gravitas that Rebel and 6FD have. I didn't watch all of 6FD, but I caught most of the action scenes, including Han Ye-Ri's. It's definitely one of the few sageuks that have amazing action choreography, including Damo and Chuno. The two that killed me were Damo and Queen Seonduk though. They took me awhile to recover. Watch at your own risk ;-)

I just started Rebel too and didn't expect much -- it's been a long time since a sageuk seemed good right off the bat. This one does. Good writing and directing. The emotions seem real and deep, so do the characters. The drama has a quiet confidence about it, like they trust their story.

Rebel has already proved it is a quality show. Defendant is a very strong competitor, and so do the Whisper later. Rebel and Whisper have the possible to be in tight in rating. Punch's rating was great,2 digits but not something hit if I am not mistaken.

As long as Rebel continues its strong storytelling, it definitely has a chance to get higher ratings after Defendant. People will tune in to Whisper for Lee Bo-Young's comeback, so the first 2 episodes will be crucial in determining if they'll continue to watch. Thankfully I can watch both online!

Perfect Wife really get bad comments from netizen (Go So Young's scandal), so it will start about 3-5%, if lucky, it's about 6%.

Maybe read explanations for people who aren't into the show above...that might give some insight. I'd say check out netizen comments but at this point, the comments are mostly from people still watching and enjoying the drama so it's a bit of an echo chamber.
It seems it's not a must watch show for quite a lot of people. It doesn't mean it's not good though.

Hwarang,Night Light and Rude Ms Young I think. Hwarang started off well but went downhill somewhere in the middle. Ms Young had decent ratings. Better than the current tvN shows.

Rebel is my favorite drama right now despite watching Defendant first. I like Defendant (Ji Sung and Uhm Ki-Joon are awesome) and the ending of episode 10 was so GOOD, but if you factor in all elements of dramamaking/fimmaking, Rebel definitely has the edge. It's 30 episodes, so I hope it stays epic until the end.
And Honey Lee is breathtakingly beautiful as Nok-Soo.

I already forgot all about Sweet Stranger and Me, but yes it aired against RDTK for several weeks. Yikes, that really was a weak stretch with both that show and Night Light pulling in <5%. I only watch Defendant, but I'm glad Rebel is holding its own.

Ratings usually don't mean much for me because I will still love a drama despite it's low ratings. What bothers me so much is the production team trying to change the script to cater to audience. I know TWY is pre-produced but there were talks about re-shooting? What happened to that? Is that for real? Because I'm totally fine with what they are doing now. I don't want them to change what they already have.
It's so eye-opening to read about others not liking a drama for the exact same reason why I love it to pieces. The wonders of human life.

That's a good idea; you can marathon all 30 episodes! I watched 8 episodes in one sitting, and am half regretting I didn't check it out after it aired. Either way, the addiction leaves no one unscathed; suffer the pain of waiting a week for the next episode or have no life for 30 uninterrupted hours of drama bliss.

I'm always on the fence on this though. Watching it without having to wait for another week is great. I can just watch the next episode right away. But then once it's done, there are no more people to talk to about how awesome the drama is. I think that a great deal of drama enjoyment that I feel is because of the discussion here at dramabeans week after week. I'd do it if I had more time in my hands but I need to pay my bills too...

Rebel is SO good! For a good like that, might be better to follow live so that you have less chance of marathon, aka panda eyes. Plus you get to read comments from others and discuss? :)
I like tomorrow with you, but putting it on the backseat now. I actually like the relationship portion, they are so cute together. But the time travelling ominous reminder of death preview at the end of every episode really puts a damper to my enjoyment.

Congrats to the cast and crew of Defendant, Chief Kim, Strong Woman and Laurel Tree Tailors. I'm particularly happy for Ji Sung and Nam Goong Min. They are two of my favorite kdrama actors. Voice is still doing well in ratings too!
Also, anyone know if LTT is deserving of it's high ratings, well relative to other weekend dramas? 30% is quite high for a weekend drama.

On LTT, it is normal rating for KBS weekend drama. You might want to check out the airtime, if I am not mistaken LTT started earlier than Blow Breeze and Our Gabsoon, so it has the advantage.
Unless weekend drama got 40% nowadays, it is not really a big deal. But I will say 20% is a big deal if it is SBS weekend drama, since they had been flop for these recent years.
