Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Episode 15
by LollyPip
Bok-ju’s and Joon-hyung’s roles are reversed in this episode, as suddenly he’s the one that needs her to be there to support him through a difficult time. But it’s not an easy job to be someone’s rock, as Bok-ju is finding out — the job comes with a pretty hefty emotional price tag of its own.
EPISODE 15: “That’s how you became an adult”
Joon-hyung looks stunned as he sees his mother for the first time in over a decade. He’s crying by the time she steps close to ask if it’s really him, his face crumpling like a child’s. His mother says that he grew up better than she expected, and reaches up to touch his face tenderly.
Joon-hyung’s aunt worries about him, knowing that his mother planned to look for him today. She asks his uncle if he thinks she’ll mention the postcards that she’s been sending as if they were from his mother.
Joon-hyung and his mom sit at a coffee shop, the air awkward and heavy between them. Joon-hyung can barely bring himself to look at her, and answers with a short “yes” when she asks if he and Bok-ju are very close.
She asks about his swimming and he starts to cry again, and she gives him a pair of sneakers even though she’s unsure of his size. She says she’s been thinking of him a lot, like whether he’s grown tall and how his face may have changed. She apologizes for not coming to see him sooner.
They have dinner with his aunt and uncle and Jae-yi, and Joon-hyung chokes on the piece of fish his mother sets on his spoon. He asks “Mom” for a glass of water, meaning his aunt, but his mother stands as well, causing an uncomfortable moment.
He walks her out to catch a cab, and she takes his hand, and he finally looks at her. Before she gets in the cab, she asks if he wants to come to her hotel tomorrow, so she can make him a meal. He agrees to come, and gets her phone number. After she leaves, he looks at the hand she was holding, and smiles a tiny smile.
He goes to school to see Bok-ju, and grabs her in a big backhug when he sees her. She notices that he seems happier than he was earlier, and he tells her what he and his mother did today, and about their plans tomorrow night. He tells Bok-ju about holding his mother’s hand, and she jokes that she’s not going to get jealous this time.
Bok-ju does admit that she’s a little jealous, because she’d like to have a mom who could come visit her, too. Joon-hyung tears up at that, and blusters that she has a great dad and uncle instead, not to mention his awesome self. He grabs Bok-ju in another hug.
The next day, Joon-hyung readies to head to his mother’s for dinner, and he tries on the sneakers she gave him. They’re a bit too small, but he puts them on anyway, determined to make them fit. That seems like a bad omen.
He goes home to pick up some photo albums to show his mom, and finds his aunt, uncle, and Jae-yi talking about money. He listens as they talk about “that child” needing surgery, and making plans to sell some land to raise more money.
Despite the talk of a sick child, all Joon-hyung hears is that his mother only came here for money. He steps into the room and asks if it’s true, and starts to sob as he says she should be grateful for all the years they fed and raised him.
He’s utterly distraught, and only grows angrier when his aunt tries to explain that there are extenuating circumstances. He screams that it doesn’t matter, and asks how someone who hasn’t even contacted them for ten years could do something like this.
His aunt realizes that Joon-hyung must know that she’s been sending the cards and gifts, not his mother, and he confirms that he’s known for a long time. He turns his anger on her for not telling him the truth and making him pretend not to know, and says that he’s ashamed because he knew she was lying for his sake.
He demands to know how they could even consider giving her money, asking if they consider him that pathetic, or if they just want to feel good about themselves. That’s going too far, and his aunt reflexively slaps him. Angry now, she spits sarcastically that she raised him so she could get into Heaven, and Joon-hyung runs out of the house.
Over at the weightlifting gym, Coach Yoon yells at Bok-ju in front of the entire team, accusing her of not training hard enough. He tells her to just quit and go to Taereung (the Korean national training center), then grins — awww, he was tricking her!
He laughs, and tells her that she’s been invited to train at Taereung. He says there will be an interview with her tomorrow, and she’s to report to Taereung this very weekend. Bok-ju is in shock, and the whole team celebrates.
Uncle Dae-ho takes a delivery at the chicken restaurant, and the new girl making the delivery (cameo by Kim Seul-gi) is decidedly flirtatious with him. She asks him for a soda, and he’s mesmerized by the way she knocks the cap off the bottle and drinks it in one go, pinky-out of course. She gives him one last cheeky smile, pokes his cheek, and leaves him trying to literally slap some sense into himself.
Nan-hee and Seon-ok are thrilled for Bok-ju’s good luck in being invited to the national team, and she tells them that her dad is happy too, since being a national weightlifter was always his dream. They’re sad that she’ll be going away though, and Nan-hee asks what she plans to do about Joon-hyung.
Bok-ju tries to call him, but he never answers the phone. Shi-ho notices that she’s worried and tells her that’s what dating is like, that you worry when you can’t get in touch, and everything makes you wonder if their feelings have changed.
Joon-hyung’s aunt is worried sick about him, feeling guilty that he’s known about the postcards and gifts for years. His uncle assures her that Joon-hyung will be fine, and his mother calls to see if something happened to him, since he didn’t show up to their dinner.
Nan-hee and Seon-ok get all gussied up for Bok-ju’s interview the next morning, since there will be a group photo. Tae-kwon runs up and asks Bok-ju if she was with Joon-hyung all last night, since he never came back to their dorm. They start to grow worried that something has happened to him, and Bok-ju calls Jae-yi to talk.
He tells her about the family fight yesterday, and how Joon-hyung learned that his mother only came back for money. He’s not surprised that Joon-hyung has run off — he says that Joon-hyung had to grow up too fast, but that he’s really very tender-hearted.
When it’s time for Bok-ju’s interview, the whole team stares at the door, and jump into action the moment it opens, ha. It’s only Coach Choi, who tells them to act natural, only to have them do it again when Coach Yoon walks in (wearing the most hideous suit ever, lol).
Her friends tell Bok-ju not to worry too much about Joon-hyung, but she can’t help it. She steps out to call him again and gets his voicemail, and this time she leaves a message. She tells him that she knows what happened, but asks him to send her a message so she can stop worrying.
Thank goodness, he’s okay — he ended up on their beach last night and fell asleep in the sand, like a stranded starfish. He dreams about his mother leaving him, then coming back, and when he wakes he finds that the too-small shoes she gave him have caused bleeding sores. Angry all over again, he throws them away.
The weightlifting team is hilariously awkward when the interviewers finally show up to film, following the camera around and acting completely unnatural. Bok-ju is distracted when it comes time for her interview, but she tells them about her slump, and how she overcame it with help.
She mentions her family, her coaches and friends, and starts to mention Joon-hyung. She thinks about all the times he’s been there when she needed someone, and she ends the interview. She rushes out, determined to find Joon-hyung and be there for him this time.
He’s still not answering his phone, and she leaves an angry message, fussing at him for worrying her like this. She goes to the river, then the beach, but Joon-hyung is nowhere to be found. Her last message is tearful and furious, and she sobs she’s breaking up with him if he’s going to be this way.
Uncle Dae-ho stops at a convenience store for snacks, and finds himself a bit short on cash. The delivery girl shows up and pays the difference, and they end up having a drink together. She leans in close and says he’s cute, and even recognizes him from his (very tiny) movie roles.
She’s drunk as a skunk later, and invites him to her place. He gallantly tries to turn her down but he’s not made of stone, and he eventually caves.
It’s dark by the time Bok-ju gets back to school, and she finds herself outside the swimming pavilion. She goes in just in case, and finds Joon-hyung floating face-up in the pool, fully clothed. She screams at him to come out but he doesn’t move a muscle, so she takes off her coat and wades in, yelling worriedly as she moves towards him.
He finally looks up when she touches him, but he hardly seems aware of what’s happening. In an emotionless voice, he says that his mother didn’t come to see him, but to ask for money. He whispers that he thought his mother was suffering all this time the same as he was, “… but I was just fooling myself.” Oh, sweetie.
He admits to Bok-ju that he’s embarrassed, toward himself and toward his aunt and uncle. His voice breaks and he cries, saying that he’s sadder now than when his mother abandoned him as a child. Bok-ju hugs him and he cries on her shoulder, still standing in the middle of the pool.
Eventually they get out and dry off, and Joon-hyung listens to Bok-ju’s angry messages and smiles a little to hear how much she cares about him. He enjoys it when Bok-ju towels off his wet hair, and cutely objects when she calls him a pretty baby.
Bok-ju fusses at him softly, telling him how worried she was. He ducks his head and says he heard her message, and asks if she’s really going to break up with him. Bok-ju says it was a warning, and he smiles and says that she likes him a lot. How could she not, when you’re looking at her that way??
Bok-ju gives him a mild beating and says they have to go, but Joon-hyung doesn’t have any shoes. They wrap his feet in plastic bags and she piggybacks him a short way, but decides he’s too heavy, so she parks him on bench and goes to borrow some shoes from a sunbae.
He puts them on and snuggles up to Bok-ju, apologizing again. She tells him that she can understand his mother, and uses an analogy to explain that her first priority right now is her sick child. But she says that he needs to go apologize to his aunt, and admits that she heard how upset she was from Jae-yi.
She doesn’t pull any punches when Joon-hyung is reluctant to do it now, and tells him that the longer he waits, the worse it will be. She takes him all the way to the pharmacy to make sure he doesn’t chicken out, and shoos him inside (it’s so cute how he calls her “noona” when she’s being bossy).
After walking as slowly as humanly possible, Joon-hyung finally goes in. He gives his aunt a bag of roasted chestnuts, her favorite, and starts to peel one for her. She gently takes her hands to stop him, and offers to make him some tea. As she does, Joon-hyung walks up behind her and backhugs her, and apologizes.
He jokes that his bad behavior is really her fault for raising him too gently, which makes her laugh. He apologizes again, saying how thankful he is for her and his uncle and Jae-yi, and how much he loves them.
Joon-hyung nuzzles his face in his aunt’s hair, and says she smells like a mother. His aunt quips that she was too worried about him to wash her hair, and now they’re both laughing.
When it’s time for Joon-hyung’s mother to catch her flight home, Joon-hyung surprises her by showing up to see her off. He looks lighter and more accepting now, and she genuinely thanks him for coming. She starts to say something, but he interrupts and thanks her for giving birth to him.
He says that that’s what he came to say, and gives her the handkerchief that he’s been holding onto ever since she left. He says that he’ll be okay without it now, and asks if she has a picture of his sister. She shows him a photo, and says that her name is Amelia.
Joon-hyung asks his mother to bring her to visit when she’s well, and shows his mother a picture of Bok-ju (aww, it’s the one he took during the fireworks). She recognizes Bok-ju from seeing her at school, and he tells her that she’s his girlfriend.
Dr. Go is shocked when Jae-yi shows up at her new office, and he jokes that she probably wouldn’t believe he was just in the neighborhood. He says that he just wanted to see her, and she asks why he’s suddenly doing things he’s never done before. Jae-yi says that he doesn’t have anyone to eat with since she left, and invites her out now.
Some girls make moony eyes at Joon-hyung’s handsomeness on the bus ride back to school, and Bok-ju pulls his turtleneck up to hide his face, hee. He pulls it down and she suggests cutting off all his hair. Sorry girlfriend, still not gonna work.
She finally tells him about being accepted to the national weightlifting team, and that she’s leaving next weekend. Joon-hyung is thrilled for her, and she’s surprised he’s not upset that this means they’ll be apart.
He says that the winner of his next swim meet gets an invitation to Taereung, so he’ll just win and join her there. Bok-ju is so excited that she shoves him to the swimming pavilion to train, bribing him with kisses. Such cuteness.
Joon-hyung trains hard, determined to win his competition and go to Taereung with Bok-ju. She makes him sandwiches and sends him back to practice after he steals another kiss, as they shoot finger-hearts at each other. They wish at the wishing fountain for him to get over his “start trauma,” and soon it’s time for the race.
Bok-ju is there to cheer, and Joon-hyung looks for her in the audience as he gets ready to start. He seems calm and ready, and as the whistle blows, he dives into the water with no issues whatsoever.
He doesn’t have the fastest start, so he has to struggle to catch up to his rival in the next lane. It’s a close finish, and Joon-hyung comes in second place by only a tiny fraction of a second. Damn.
Meanwhile, Bok-ju’s father gets the news that a kidney donor may have been found for him. He makes an appointment for the next day for further testing, telling Dae-ho that he wants to wait until after he sends Bok-ju off to Taereung. He asks Dae-ho to keep this quiet unless the donor is confirmed.
Joon-hyung looks disappointed when he rejoins Bok-ju after his race, but she smiles up at him and gives him a hug. She tells him that he did a great job overcoming his start trauma, and that now he can just work on improving.
As they walk back to school, Joon-hyung knows exactly how long until she leaves, down to the second. He tells her not to escape because he plans on following her soon, and she tells him that she’s assigned Nan-hee and Seon-ok as his “paparazzi.”
He offers to escort her to Taereung tomorrow, but she says she wants to go alone. She warns him to spend all his free time training so he can join her, though she asks him to look in on her dad every once in a while.
She gets a call from Nan-hee, who asks her to stop by the weightlifting gym. Joon-hyung goes with her, and decides to take advantage of the dark room for some smooches. Of course that’s right when the lights go on and the entire weightlifting team yells SURPRISE!, then freezes at the sight of the two kissing.
Once the awkwardness is over, the coaches give Bok-ju some words of encouragement, and she thanks them for all their support. Coach Yoon has Joon-hyung introduce himself, then tries to claim that he was totally that handsome when he was young. Coach Choi interrupts and proposes a toast, wishing Bok-ju luck at her first competition in China.
Bok-ju is ready to leave in the morning, and her father and Dae-ho see her off. Dae-ho offers her a ride but she says she wants to go on her own, and she asks him to take care of Dad. She salutes them as if she’s going off to army duty, and Dad watches her leave, both sad and proud.
As Bok-ju takes the bus to Taereung, she thinks, “Joon-hyung-ah, I’m leaving. I couldn’t show you, but I’m really nervous and scared right now. Will I be able to do well? After I open that unknown door and enter, what kind of world will be waiting for me?”
Joon-hyung looks at the photos of Bok-ju decorating his locker, and he also thinks, “Don’t worry, Bok-ju-yah. You’ll do well. You’re much stronger and prettier than you think you are. You’ll shine brilliantly wherever you are. Kim Bok-ju, swag!”
Bok-ju enters the national training center, and in her heart, she promises Joon-hyung that she’ll wait for him, and asks him not to wait too long. Joon-hyung gets ready to train, determined to join her, and in his heart he promises that if she waits, he’ll follow her soon.
“I miss you, Jung Joon-hyung.” “I miss you, Bok-ju-yah.”
COMMENTS
Awww, what a great episode. This show just can’t take a wrong step — it continues to get better, and has never experienced the late-stage slump that so many dramas suffer. It never drags out any of its issues, handling them with just the right timing but moving on quickly, so that instead of a few long, drawn-out problems, we get new situations and new conflicts every single week. It’s just perfect, and I’m going to be so sad when it’s over.
In fact, I’m very curious to see where the finale next week takes us, because as far as I’m concerned, the show could end right here and I’d be completely satisfied. We know that Joon-hyung and Bok-ju’s love will carry them through whatever comes, whether or not he’s able to join her at Taereung, and I think I would have liked this as an open-ended finale (and I don’t normally care for that sort of thing). But I have faith that whatever the final episode brings, it will be just as poignant and meaningful as the show has proved itself to be, week after week.
I’ve said, more than once, that I believe that Nam Joo-hyuk’s acting has grown by leaps and bounds with this drama. I hadn’t been able to tell though, if it’s just that Joon-hyung is the perfect character for him, or if he’s really gotten that much better. But this episode really drove home the fact that he’s not just thriving in this one role. Every time Joon-hyung cried, I cried right along with him — his pain was so real and palpable. But the scene with his aunt, when his heart was breaking at the thought of his mother only coming for money… that scene convinced me, then the one with Bok-ju in the pool decided it. This isn’t just a case of an actor and a role suiting each other. He’s truly growing as an actor, almost before our eyes, and I think he has the potential to be a truly gifted performer.
You know, in a way I think Joon-hyung is better off without his mother in his life, because she clearly doesn’t see how special and amazing he is. He has a mother and a father who adore him, and a brother who dotes on him, and that’s a gift that I’m happy he acknowledges and appreciates. It’s not worth his emotional effort to pine after a woman who doesn’t appreciate the wonderful man he’s become enough to keep even in minimal touch, who only showed up because she needed something, and not even from him. He was unfortunate collateral damage in her quest for money, and I don’t honestly care why she needed the money… even if she has a sick child, she didn’t have to travel halfway across the world and show up in front of Joon-hyung to ask for it. There’s absolutely no excuse for not making a freaking phone call once or twice in ten years. But I’m glad he finally saw her for what she is — a mother, but no longer truly his mother. And if nothing else, it cemented the love that he and Bok-ju have for each other (and I love that when he ran off, he went to the place where he first told Bok-ju about his mother abandoning him), and gave Bok-ju a chance to be there for him in an important way, like he’s consistently done for her.
But you know, I think that I was mistaken when I said that up until now, Bok-ju hasn’t supported Joon-hyung the way he supports her. His biggest complaint with Jae-yi (and his adoptive parents, too) is that they’re too nice to him, which inadvertently made him feel like an outsider in the family. Of course that’s not what they intended, but not being yelled at, not fighting with him, just made Joon-hyung feel like he wasn’t truly part of their family. But Bok-ju has never done that — she’s always spoken straight with him, fussed at him when he’s wrong, and she’s outspoken about his screw-ups when he makes them. Even now when he’s at his most vulnerable, she doesn’t let Joon-hyung off the hook about worrying her and everyone else. By letting Joon-hyung know when she’s disappointed in him, Bok-ju isn’t treating him with the kid gloves that make him feel separate. She’s honest because she loves him and she knows he can do better, and that’s love right there.

Gah, I love this show, these characters -- everything -- so, so, so much. I don't know whether to be grateful or heartbroken that I'll be traveling next week and will have to wait even longer to watch the finale.
I can't believe I almost passed it up because the story didn't sound like something I'd be particularly interested in -- but really, this show's charm is all in the execution: the vibrant characters, the beautifully (and sometimes painfully) real-to-life relationships and heartaches, the mile-wide smile it always puts on my face, the way it makes me cry as much out of happiness as anything else...
And I'm so proud of Nam Joo-hyuk right now. I've had a weakness for him since School 2015 (yes, I was unashamedly Team Han Yi-An from the beginning *ducks* pleasedon'tkillme), but didn't actually realize it until Moon Lovers (Baek-ah won my heart the moment he looked at Lady Hae with those eyes and said "you know how I feel about you"), but his performance in this drama, and especially this episode, have taken him to a whole new level.

I totally cried along with Joon hyung. Nam Joo hyuk really delivers all the emotions, feelings & angst for all of the crying/sad scenes. What a 180 degrees change from his time in Scarlet Heart!
Btw, Joon hyung's aunt & uncle are from which side of the family? It's not the mom's side right? They don't look close at all.

I just realized something. The aunt , uncle the whole family there just to nice. I thought it was just his brother but it's in all of them . There's no way in hell a woman who abandoned her son then show up ten years later for money no less would think it's OK if not for them. She actually thought a dinner would make up for the neglect and pain she caused. I was clapping when he gave back her handkerchief. I think she knew what it meant he was letting her selfish ass go. Good for him

I think his birth mom is just clueless and selfish enough to not realize what returning the handkerchief meant. He was letting her go but she was too wrapped up in her own problems and her own life ("too busy living," I can't believe she actually said that to her child) to understand he's giving up on her as his mom.
And to think in the first episode Joon Hyung blew up at Bok Joo for washing the handkerchief—now he's sending it back to Canada with his absentee mom. The symbolism, I love it.

Omoooo! You are right! That hankie!
Like Bok Joo, I actually understand his mother giving up her pride for the sake of her sick daughter. However, it was her lack of awareness, her insensitivity to the emotional chaos she caused to Joon Hyung and family that irked me.
When she presented him the shoes, did she even bother to find out if the shoes fit him? Nah. She didn't tell anyone she's coming and of course she didn't even bother to find out his shoe size.

Dinner he didn't show up to either, and she didn't bother to figure out why he didn't or where he was. I'm actually kind of curious what her deal is. I'm guessing she's just selfish and picked her own happiness over her son. Though, in the end, I think the greatest thing she really suffered was not having someone like JH in her life. Her loss.
The whole family is way too nice, even at times to a hurtful degree even if they don't mean to be.

I cried along with Joon Hyung!!! I personally think that this is the best acting performance potrayed by Nam Joo Hyuk so far!! I dunno how to describe in words but I just feel totally immersed into his crying scenes! (Aww he is adorable to the infinity) ? Not forgetting to mention Lee Sung Kyung, she has done her job very well too!! Their chemistry is beyond expectation hiii.
I could sense that Joon Hyung is actually more comfy and attached to his aunt more than to his real mother. This scenario is very common in our reality that if there is no effort to keep in touch with each other, a family could be possibly turned into strangers, esp when u are living all over the world. In this case I put the blame on his real mother for not making the effort.
On top of that, itwas super heartfelt the moment I heard "I miss you, Jung Joon Hyung. I miss you Bok Joo-yah." Coz I know exactly how it feels to be in that particular situation, which knocks me off my feet before this, luckily fully recovered now hahaha

This episode really made me cry...
Now i am gonna fight anyone who says NJH isn't a decent actor ( see WF esp ep 15 I'll tell the haters?)
And how can this show do everything right?
Even the small things like JH's father seeing the mother and son hugging it out and smiling. Like every scene makes so much sense and has so much meaning.
I hope atleast the final episode can get a lot of love so that the cast and crew can see how much we appreciate their hardwork.
We gotta do somethig to convey our love . Any suggestions beanies??
P.S. Can this show never end please??

I have registered in an internet poll that is going around, to see if they have enough fans to produce a special dvd edition. :)
But if you guys have any ideas, you can count on me. I would be happy to pass them the message of how much we love WFKBJ, and that we want them to keep up with their good work and surprise us again in the future. :D

I love the anguish we as international viewers and fans have when a show does not do well domestically, but it really popular internationally. We try to champion it as best we can. It's a feeling I know all to well with 1% of Anything (2016). I think it's sites like this, Soompi, and even YouTube that help give voice to the international audience. I would love it if the showrunners, talent agencies, producers, and studios did event aimed at the international audience. That way they will really get a feel for how popular these shows can be outside of Korea. It is the one silver lining I see for Netflix jumping on the K-Drama original content bandwagon. They will have an easier time assessing international viewership which could help with the type of content that is produced in the future that doesn't do as well domestically.
Oh, and yes, I'll be standing right there next to you to fend off the NJH haters! Fighting!

I love Kim Seul Gi but I really didn't appreciate her cameo this episode, cause it just felt so disjointed from the rest of the story and also I see no purpose for it, unless it's suppose to symbolise that Uncle Dae Ho has moved on? This may be cause the last two cameos (Ji Soo and Seohyun) were done so well that I had higher expectations on hers. Both were worked into the plot so well and actually acted as catalysts for the plots, so in comparison Kim Seul Gi's cameo felt like fillers that detracted from Joon Hyung's struggles that we honestly didn't really need.

I love this drama more and more. I didn't expect much on this in the beginning. I quite like something more serious than teenage story. But turn out this is the one that could make me surprise and love every ep. Thanks all crews and casts for this amazing job.

Am I the only one that notices BJ telling JH that she loves him? When she makes him food and forces him to run straight after, she says "I love you" eeekkkk.
Have they passed the "I love you" stage already? And if so I kinda wish they made a bigger deal about it, than it just being so natural.

I thought the same thing! I read the recap first and then watched it. When she said "I love you," I was like "wait, what?! Did no one else notice?" But, I think they've been in love the moment they started dating (even before that really), so I'm not surprised how nonchalantly it was said.

The title of this episode was about growing up, and I think the whole scene at the airport with his mom shows the truth in that. His biological mom is an imperfect person and the whole letting go with returning the handkerchief to me was great. He's letting go of the bitterness, grief and even hope that magically he will have some awesome relationship with her and realizing this is who she is and no one can change that. Sometimes acceptance and forgiveness are the keys to moving on.

All the comments about NJH's superb crying scenes made me think about WHY his acting is so extraordinary here. It's because his face totally transforms. He becomes almost unrecognizable. This means he's really letting go. So many actors barely transform their facial features while letting a few tears run down their cheeks. Here, Nam Joo Hyuk BECAME his pain...and we all fell into his broken heart. In my four years of drama watching, I've only seen three other actors who impressed me this much with their transformation during crying: Lee Dong Wook in La Dolce Vita, Rain in A Love to Kill (yes, RAIN!) and Uee in Marriage Contract. Kudos kudos and 1000% Bravo! to Nam Joo Hyuk!

I couldn't have said it better!
I've been trying to explain why real crying is more than just a few tears rolling down one's cheeks. It's also neither a contortion of features which I have seen some actors do on the other extreme.

I remember watching NJH with JI-Soo in some celebrity bromance show and I noticed he was kinda fussy about his hair ? In my mind, I thought okay he was a model and he probably cares a lot about how he looks on camera. and now here I'm- watching him cry in this specific scene(I bawled my eyes out) and immediately realizes how great he is as an actor in that scene! He was so immersed in the emotions, not even for a mili second he cared about how he looks ahhhhhhhh * standing ovation * Not many actors got it, NJH you got it! officially a fan now

I second everything. NJH was superb in episode 15. Don't know how much effort is behind what we saw, but I bet he has been working super hard. Not all actors improve so fast, some of them stay for years being only pretty faces and never improve at all.
I'm turning into a super fan of his. He is talented and he is working so hard to improve as an actor. I will watch anything he is in from now on. :)

I love, love, love that the writer brought JH story around in a complete arc in this episode.
In the very beginning, Shi Ho gets offered a spot on the national team, and she decides she needs to focus only on her training. At that same instant, JH faces a huge emotional blow that takes away the only comfort he's known in ten years. But she doesn't care and goes away.
Now, Bok Ju gets offered a spot on the national team. At that very moment, JH faces a huge emotional blow that cripples him. Instead of Bok Ju throwing him away, she literally throws away her interview to rush to him. She looks for him for two days. She cries and calls him and contacts his family. When he needed support the most in his life, she was there.
And yet that didn't mean she had to give up on her dreams. She didn't have to quit weightlifting or get kicked off the national team. She got to be there for him when he needed her AND still follow her dream. I love that so much!!!

Yes to all of this! I love how strong BJ is and that she works to have both her career goals and her relationship. And how much did I love that JH was immediately on board (without jealousy or self-pity) with her going to the national team, and that the male lead is literally busting his butt to get to the same level as his girlfriend?

I loved loved loved loved that NOT once did BJ, like many other KDRAMA leads, think maybe I can't go or need to choose between JH and her dreams. I loved that she told him way before the day she had to go. I loved it. His actions after all that was just icing on the cake for me!!! LOVE THIS DRAMA SO MUCH!

Thanks Lollypip for the recap and your lovely comment about how BJ is giving JH the tough love that he's been craving from his Hyung. It makes perfect sense actually. Just another reason for me to love them individually and as a couple.
Also, as far as Nam Joo Hyuk is concerned, I no longer cared about acting. All I know is I was right there with him crying the entire time he was. I can't believe I'm saying this, but he is now my top favorite young actor. Sorry Park Bo Gum.

This is one of the most emotionally relatable shows that I ever seen. I don't get why it doesn't do well. I mean its a gem. I cried for the first time while watching a drama but the only thing that I didn't really understand was that he seemed okay with seeing his mom after 10 years. I would have been angry. Really angry. Demanded answers. That's was the only point that I didn't get.

I think he wasn't prepared for it that's why. She was sprung on him, and he sees his mother standing in front of him , after 10 years just like that. it was a shock so much , that his mind is numbed and only his pent up emotions surge and he finds himself swept away in the deluge..
the way he spontaneous starts 'weeping' is testament to how unprepared he was..
So yes, if he had been mentally prepared even a bit, he would have been able to put up a front. but they did show that he did fully understand or even realize what had happened when he goes to meet BokJoo..
He still couldn't talk about the meeting with a straight face and was ready to sob after a mere minute...
in that scene, I really admired bokJoo.. I loved that she said she was jealous of him. Of course She technically has more in terms of a real family , but in that moment he needed to hear that he did eventually wind up with something that was his very own and was enviable.
I do think, that had he not stumbled onto the truth that morning, he eventually would have gotten around to asking his ma some very serious question both for himself and for his adoptive family.
I personally don't think this was a misstep in direction or screenplay.

@Striving8, Remember that he is still full of hope when he first sees his mom. His kind and loving heart wants to believe with all its might that this woman standing in front of him is there to love him 100% and has missed him all these years. His face is full of yearning and longing, relief and disbelief and utter surrender to the emotion that his mom is FINALLY there. This is no time (initially) for anger and recrimination and hurtful words flung at her. That would/could only interrupt what is potentially a loving moment between them. The hurt and anger comes later when he discovers the truth.

I tried to suppress my emotion while watching episode 15 cause I was at the office and I didn't want my colleagues to see me crying!
Agree so much about NJH acting. He delivers in these emotional scenes. It tugs at my heartstring when JH lets out everything he's been keeping inside. I just wanna give him a great big hug T.T
His mom can go off and never return, please. How dare of her coming in like that and asking for money from the family that raise your son who you left behind many years ago??? Ugh, she upsets me so much. If I were JH, I wouldn't even wanna talk to her.
I saw people who aren't exactly happy with the way BJ comforts JH. They said that BJ is self-centered by saying that JH has it better because he at least has a mom while she doesn't. I don't actually see any problem with it. It's the way she is. Of course we wish she would be more careful and considerate but well, she's there for him.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…
I love that it’s about a couple from middle class family – no chaebol heir saving the love of his/her life
I love that it’s about people that you can totally relate with even if you’re not into sports.
I love that it’s about a friendship that blossomed into romance because gahhh.. that’s really what’s happening in real life
I love that it shows what friendship is all about after 1 of you gets a significant other
I love that it shows even if you are adopted, the family that raised you is your family
I love that it shows how parents love their kids sooo much and vice versa
I love that they touch and kiss each other because, hey, that’s what couples do
I love that they love each other just the way they are
I love that they tackle therapy like an ordinary thing to do to solve mental problems
I love that the ex didn’t take too much screen time/story and that she turned out to be a friend as well
I love the jealousy part, the bickering, the make up hugs and kisses
I love that they show second chances in love
I love that they support each other and honest with each other even if that means you do not agree all the time
I love the actors – they cry, I cry too; they laugh, I laugh too
I love the side stories, the cameos, the clothes, the writing
I love the OST even if I don’t understand Korean
I love LSK and NJH, apart and together
I am sad that this will end soon.. but I’m pretty sure this drama will stay with me for a long long time.

You know it's an awesome drama with awesome actors and actresses when you watch it without sub and don't even get what they're talking but you're still crying. Then you watch it with sub and cry harder. Then you read the recap and cry even harder.
What kind of sorcery is this????!!!! Gosh this episode has everything, i said that i'm ready to see JH cries but i didn't expect i'd cry a river (even harder) than him in this episode! Lol! This episode stings my heart, in the best way. I can see the pain, the love, the angst, the joy. Really......props to the writer, PD, actors, actresses....all of them....
AND I STILL WAIT FOR THE SPECIAL EPISODE HERE PLEASE DRAMA GODFAIRY!! I CANT TAKE THE FACT THAT THIS DRAMA IS ENDING NEXT WEEK NO!!!
Oh! I totally love love love the adlibed kiss in track and field scene!! I totally ship the swag couple!! Please please let Sung Kyung and Joo Hyuk be a real couple, or at least please let them be together in another project again :"")))
P.S: oh btw, am i the only one who tought that when BJ mentioning about her deceased mom it's actually not because she was jealous, but it's her way of comforting JH. Kinda like showing him that everything's gonna be fine. That's why when JH told her that she has dad, uncle and him, she just naturally hugged him with a smile and patted him gently while he's crying in her arms hehe

It does not happen often that it's the 15th episode and you feel just as excited for another 50 episodes if they were up for offer, but alas we are left with only one. I know for a fact that I am going to need something for the biggest withdrawal symptom caused by a kdrama, like ever.
I last wrote here on DB in the Healer thread but this show, it has done things to my heart that I can't even explain coherently. I find myself, looking forwards to Wednesdays more than weekends, also, trying to watch live stream, read updates, watch raw, watch it with subtitles from multiple sites, read recaps, trawling through twitter for gifs, watching fan made videos on the show. That's just the beginning. I also found myself day dreaming about the two characters, smiling to myself remembering something from the show. It's like I've fallen in love with the show. Like Joon Hyung asks isn't this love?
This show has moved me many times, with various small little slice of life details it incorporates. However, this episode was the most touching because it was a role reversal in every sense.
Also, I feel this was the episode where Bok Joo realised that she truly loves Joon Hyung. The short unexplained absence really struck a big blow. Up until now, Bok Joo was largely oblivious to how much Joon Hyung has done for her, she remembers the obvious big moments, like when her father is taken ill and his reaction to it (which led her to accept his proposal), another being bringing foot warmers, coat & scarf in the middle of a fight. However, she realises that he has been her cheerleader all along, holding her hand through her crush, raising her spirits taking her on various (non)dates, telling her words that she needed to hear, just giving her a shoulder to cry on. That he loves her she knows, but it takes that instance in between the interview for her to realize *how much*.
The first time KBJ asked JH about his start trauma (Way back in epi 6) he was taken aback, but didn't go into the finer details of the issue. His biggest reveal to her is about his family (epi 9, beach) BUT now he is completely open and honest with her. He cries on her shoulders, he confesses his deepest secret - his embarrassment and heartbreak that his mom didn't come for him after all. He is
vulnerable and ready to depend on her emotionally. Suddenly, we meet a KBJ who is willing to shoulder that responsibility.
Handing over the handkerchief as a symbol of letting go of his mother & making peace with the situation is a brilliant piece of writing IMO. Maybe, the purpose of the handkerchief was for JH to meet his soulmate KBJ (in another drama, it would've been a motif planted by fate)

Have to mention how effective NJH was in the scene where he confronted his adoptive parents. I couldn't help but notice, he was outraged on their behalf more than anything else. His anguish came out phenomenally there. He has always respected and appreciated what they have been doing for him, in turn he was the best son/brother/person (instead of brooding over his ill fate or dwelling on abandonment issues though it did manifest as the start trauma).
I think his sessions with the psychologist helped him realize that sometimes, confrontation helps. His emotions have been on the edge ever since his feelings for KBJ came to the forefront. So, the sudden appearance of his mother who he thought all along was tied down by commitments, and the realization that she didn't come for him at all triggered the avalanche of emotions.
I particularly loved LSK's portrayal of KBJ in the scenes where she just seemed like this calm and serene presence (not when she was being mad at him for disappearing). At that moment, it didn't matter what she said, he got what he needed, comfort.
Thank you lollypip & fellow beanies, you make watching this show doubly enjoyable with your comments and analysis.

I absolutely love NJH in this. I think that's basically the party line when it comes to him as JH all around the world.
However, I do feel like there should be a post just about how great LSK is portraying BJ. Thank you guys for touching on that: BJ's scenes with JH in this episode- BJ being "that serene presence" were just amazing. I think her understated acting (subtleties and lack of over dramatic actions) in these scenes were spot on.
Anyway, I will keep it short, but I just wanted to say how appreciative I am that LSK was able to completely immerse herself into this role, from her physical appearance to actual actions. Her gaining weight (granted she's still skinny but still-it's a big deal in SK), cutting off her beautiful hair to give BJ's bob/look, and probably the countless hours spent perfecting the facial actions, that walk, and demeanor were not in vain. She created this adorable, strong, and lovable character. Basically, I just love it so much that you see 2 completely different people- BJ and LSK.

are you me? i am so obsessed with this show that i would do anything it takes just to see them (basically all the things you mentioned). you couldn't have accentuated my thoughts better. the scene where bokjoo realized that joonhyung has always been there for her, supported her, tried to lift her up when she was down had me bawling my eyes out. let's admit it- joonhyung was the only one who helped her break out of the slump while her friends were just like "why are you like this?" "you should be happy after winning first place" so when she was reminded of the person who truly supported her in every aspect and was willing to give up on the interview moved my heart deeply. i also agree that she was oblivious to how much joonhyung has done for her until his absence struck a big blow. makes her realize how much she needs him in her life, how much she loves him. how could bokjoo survive without him? the scene where joonhyung said that bokjoo is much stronger and prettier than she think is also had me in tears.

I really started to notice NJH up his game in Moon Lovers after an awkward start, and a number of us on the forum commented how far he had come from Cheese in ML. It's been a pleasure watching him become a full fledged actor in WLF, because whatever his weaknesses he's got such a great vibe about him that they're easily excused. He was for sure my fave character as Eun Taek in Cheese, and he's become my fave leading man this year. I mean I love all our alpha males, but they're difficult for the most part - but what girl wouldn't realistically want to marry a Joon Hyung and have a great chance of it working out.
I do want to comment on a couple of glitches. First, any competetive swimmer can tell you you don't splay your fingers when you swim, they need to be together for max power. Second, Canada has universal health care, JH's mom has been there well over the time to become a permanent resident, her daughter is likely a citizen, so she wouldnt be paying for a major operation. These are small things, like catching typos in a letter, but like typos the force of the letter or drama loses something, and the viewer is left to wonder why these things weren't caught because they're so easy to avoid or correct with just a tiny tad of reasearch. A little sloppy.
But I mention them because that's been my overall experience with this drama. I LOVE it and I wasn't expecting to because it started out a little awkward, unpolished in its execution, just like Bok Joo really, but it has so much honest heart it almost avoids cheesiness, just like Bok Joo and Joon Hyung. What great characters, great romance, great fun.

We have few mermaids in Canada - the water is too cold - and the wives of the very rich I have met are so different from the chaebol wives in kdramas that I often wonder if they're a particularly Korean stereotype following in the footsteps of stereotypical conniving Korean royal wives in a Joseon harem.

Yes, and her daughter was likely born in Canada, making her a citizen even if her mother is somehow illegal (not a permanent resident or citizen). So as I said a few comments above, there's no way she'd be paying for a big operation. Totally agree - so glad we didn't spend a bunch of episodes on the birth mom. One of the things I like about the drama is that it presents then resolves problems quickly, whether that's a zit on the nose or the return of a mother who abandoned you.

Joon Hyung's aunt mentioned to Jae Yi that Joon Hyung half sister has a rare desease. So i don't think it is a writing loophole. The insurance do not cover treatment for rare deceases https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2016/01/20/canadian-families-pushing-for-a-rare-diseases-national-strategy.html

I love the way this show balances out the comedy with the more serious aspects of growing up and overcoming difficulties. Best parts for me were:
- Joon Hyung crying in pool. Bok Joo looking at him with tears in her eyes. I cried along with them. Nam Joo Hyuk developed some serious acting skills.
- Joon Hyung saying "If you kiss me, I will run". Bok Joo really kissing him. His reaction to that kiss was priceless - a combination of surprise, happiness and well now I really to run...lol (I don't even know what I am describing but I loved that reaction). To top it off, it was adlibbed - Can these two date already?
This show is so well written that I barely even noticed that the mother was asking for money for surgery when she lives in Canada until someone else pointed it out in another forum. We have free healthcare in Canada so surgeries are mostly free except maybe cosmetic surgery or dental work. However, the scenario is still plausible if her daughter needed urgent surgery and had to be taken to the united states (which has shorter wait times than Canada) but requires up front payment. Anyway, I just have to defend the writer on this little issue cos I love this show too much.
I usually do not rewatch shows but I think I will be rewatching this show esp on a really bad day so I can just smile like idiot. Not sure what will be happening in the last episode but I think I can trust the writer to tie up all loose ends (Ah Young and Jae Yi, Samchoon and dad's surgery) and deliver a strong finish.

I hv always wanted a drama/movie that just depict something that is realistic n relatable with no such dramatic plot like most kdrama have where one is high society n one is not n where there is politics that have grt impact on the story or where the guy treat the girl horribly, n many others.
This drama just did it all what I always wanted to watch where is there no typical clichés plot but just regular normal life where diff ppl have diff probs n deals with it n even the supposed antagonist 2nd lead isn't really an antagonist but who also have her own probs n where she can change n grow.
Ah I just love this drama can't believe myself that I hv this feeling for the first time of being sad, wanting more, for a drama yet happy that I happened to HV watched this drama....I really did learnd a lot!!!?????

I completely agree that Nam Joo Hyuk's acting was superb in this episode. And yes, this episode made me cry a lotttt. *sobs*
There's one little scene that touched my heart. It was when Bok-ju gave a pair of borrowed shoes to Joon-hyung and the shoes really fit his big feet. It breaks my heart as it portrays that his girlfriend knows more about him than his own biological mother :'''(

Saaaaame. I sort of sniffed in tears when I saw that, but laughed when BokJoo said, "I even steal shoes for you." LOL. That's love, man.

Guys there's a survey on Naver for a WFKBJ DVD director's cut, if you're interested, see link below. Open it in google chrome 'cause it translates Korean to English.

His mom is shameless. But as so many said here, it's not about her, it was about giving closure to JH. Most of the times in life, it's not about how others treat us, it's about how we treat them. And JH is free from his trauma because he can let go of his memories of his biological mom. You're better without her anyway JH.
Ugh, NJH's acting was so good, I cried when his face crumpled at the beginning, and I felt a premonition of doom everytime he became happier and happier with his mother. And when the other shoe finally dropped and he cried in anger, pain and humiliation I was sobbing so hard. And again when he spoke to BokJoo in the pool. His pain felt real, an I'm tearing right now remembering it. I am so pleased with NJH's progress as an actor.
I hope our two main leads gets loads of offers so I can see them again.
Oh NJH did get the offer for Bride of the Water God, I hope it'll be epic. He deserves epic.
His relationships with his aunt is sweet and loving and I...I'm gonna cry again.
This just goes to show that family is not necessarily the one you're born to, sometimes, you meet them later on. And it wouldn't be any less precious.

I am just in awe of this drama! I don't think I'll ever forget a drama that can bring back the flutterings of my first relationship. Just WOW!!! Hats off to the writers that this drama is on its 15th (well 16th now) episode and each new episode tops the previous one. That's just an absolutely rare occurrence in the Kdrama universe. Sigh...too bad it's only 16 episodes long. Sadness. I don't want to say goodbye to this masterpiece!

Joon Hyung is such a great guy that I pity those who 'lost' him and envy those who have him in their lives.
If I am Si Ho and lost a guy like Joon Hyung and worse seeing him and my roomie in love, I don't think I can be as magnanimous.
I don't think biological Mom fully realized her mistake and loss so I don't really care about her.
JH's Mom and Dad are the nicest people and great parents. They didn't just take care of JH, they love him as their own. From JH's words, it seems that he was even coddled. Although overcompensating has its drawbacks, they weren't using it to replace true affection. Jae In could have easily become resentful and jealous but he was just a loving older hyung to JH. JH truly gained more than he lost when he was abandoned.

Echoing everyone's great words and giving some support as a viewer from Malaysia. This little gem of a drama is the drama i prefer to watch first instead of LOBS every Wed-Thurs. It is awesome when a drama capitalizes on youthful love and gives us much skinship between the lovers.
Say NO to angsty love and YES to lovey dovey lovers. Wish I had something like this during my youth. Great Korean dramas continue to live up our fantasy cause who sees TV shows that shows us reality. Fantasy and lovey dovey scenes just gives humankind hope for a better world. I just feel so happy and hopeful whenever I see this drama. Glad, even Si Ho's story did not get anymore sadder than it needs to be. I hope they show her being able to continue in a positive manner whatever she chooses now onwards.

currently in a state of denial with the fact that we've only got an episode of kim bok joo left. never have i watched a drama that i could relate to so much, and at the same time feel for.
i love how real but also so so sweet each relationship is portrayed, from the young love of bok joo and joon hyung, to the familial love we see in bok joo's dad and uncle / joon hyung's fambam. these two characters (bok joo and joon hyung that is) really taught us a lot on what love can mean in the big and little things, as they supported one another through their own crises.
watching the characters grow have been also very very heartwarming, especially with shi ho, bok joo and joon hyung! (p.s. throwback to early eps of joon hyung and how annoying he was!! hahaha)
kim bok joo has been nothing short of adorable and i'm so sad that the drama that i have grown so fond and attached to is coming to an end. this really is my favourite of favourites for how close the characters are to my heart.
no fantasy or crazy damsel in distress stories, just our weightlifting fairy, kim bok joo!

Thanks for the recap Lollypip!
Your comment- "This isn’t just a case of an actor and a role suiting each other. He’s truly growing as an actor, almost before our eyes, and I think he has the potential to be a truly gifted performer." is completely right! I have really loved watching NJH act in this drama and not just because the character is great. and suitable. He makes the character even more loveable and believable. NJH showed more of his range this episode and will continue to surprise all of us as he takes on different roles. I too will be really sad when this show ends next week. Its been my happy pill and more beloved than Goblin and LOTBS. I will miss the great chemistry between NJH and LSK. I hope this writer and production team continue to make great dramas like this.. Quality stuff.

Nam Joo Hyuk, you were soooo great!
I think I was mostly touched by Joon Hyung's crying when he met his mother at the campus (I was in tears as well... and in awe of NJH's acting...)

I'm glad how Siho's story turned out, that she was given a proper and positive ending. It wouldn't have been as effective as it did had they made Siho's role just a shallow jealous ex-girlfriend. Siho was really genuine friends with Bokjoo and it was just plain jealousy that made her to those terrible things at the start of the show, and she regretted it.
I think since most of the issued have been closed, the only thing we have left is Bokjoo's insecurity. Bokjoo doesn't see herself the way Junhyung does, beautiful. And it would be great to end the show the way it started, Junhyung telling Bokjoo that she is beautiful the way she is.

Thanks for the recap, LP! What an amazing ep!
I love NJH in this role!! He really portrayed JH's emotions superbly in this ep and his pain was so real. I applaud him for this stellar performance. Those tears gutted my heart. Even though he already knew that it was his aunt who sent the postcards and gave him the gifts all these years, it's so much harder to pretend that he doesn't know and to have his hopes dashed that his mom didn't really come back to see him at all was the worst feeling ever. No wonder he shut himself off completely away from all the people he loves after lashing out at his aunt. He just felt so much pain that he didn't know what to do with those emotions and just let it all out in that painful way that only real family will react.
I'm glad that BJ could be there for him this time, just like all those times he was there for her. I love how she called him so many times and how she looked for him all day long, even calling JY. It mirrored those times when JH relentlessly tracked her down and was the only one who knew where she was. The swimming pool team was especially touching considering that I think BJ is afraid of water (from that scene at the end of ep 1). So glad that JH has BJ and confess all his feelings of fear and hurt.
I don't doubt that his mom still cares in some way, maybe out of guilt or just simply that as a mom, she misses him--just not to the extent that she would keep in touch or be a part of his life. Not sure if that's a conscious choice cuz she's got a new life in Canada, and I suppose the only thing that's really on her mind right now is getting her younger child treatment. In any case, it's wrong of her to do that, and I'm happy that JH was able to overcome this obstacle, having forgiven his real mom and realizing how much he cherishes his aunt, uncle, and older cousin. I think he has finally made peace with himself and I'm so glad BJ was a part of this process, nudging him in the right direction and being there for him when needed.
How awesome to see KSG in a cameo with Uncle DH!! The whole mesmerized scene was hilarious, especially when he started to slap himself. XD
JH and BJ make such an adorable couple. I love their honest conversations and how deeply they care for each other, and they just enjoy each other's company. JH's finger hearts are the sweetest thing ever. I love how supportive he is of BJ going to training and said that he will follow her there soon. I also love how he reassured her of his feelings so that she doesn't have to fear that he will have a change of heart. It was awesome to see BJ cheering for JH at the swimming competition and telling him he did a great job despite placing second.
More kiss bribes please!!

I haven't been unsatisfied with one episode this whole run. Every episode is meaningful and beautiful in its own way. This episode made me cry like a baby. I was utterly heartbroken at Joon-hyung's scenes with his aunt because I could just feel how crushed he was. Can't believe there's only one episode left :'( It'll be bittersweet. Absolutely adore this show <3

Who else is backreading recaps of previous episodes and faithfully going through the comments and squeeing all over again like it was the first time? I'm currently at the stage of drama addiction where I'm mostly wishing i could go back in time just so I could watch this drama again and be pleasantly surprised week by week by how good it is. November feels like it was just yesterday, and yet, totally irreversible.
