Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Episode 6

Bok-ju faces a conflict of interest between her personal and her professional dreams, and the consequences are as concerning as they are hilarious. She’s trying to juggle everything at once, and the longer she tries to keep all the little balls in the air, the harder it gets to keep her secrets from everyone. She’s going to need help, and support comes from the most unecpected direction you can imagine.

EPISODE 6: “Long tails either get caught or stepped on”

Jae-yi takes a call from his mom as he’s driving Bok-ju home from the concert. Bok-ju smiles at the easy banter between the two, then takes the piece of gum he offers as if it’s a priceless jewel. She gets the hiccups from all the excitement, and holding her breath to get rid of them doesn’t work. Jae-yi pulls over and gets Bok-ju a drink, which does stop the hiccups. Then he gives Bok-ju his coat, and she starts hiccuping all over again. Cute.

During his therapy session, Joon-hyung tells his therapist that he learned to swim when he was eleven years old. He says he was lonely and awkward, but water felt like a safe place, like being in his mother’s arms.

We see Joon-hyung’s mother leaving him behind when she got married and moved to Canada when he was ten. Joon-hyung says that his mother always sent presents and postcards at Christmas, so he never felt abandoned.

But one year he cut his hand on his gift’s packaging, and had gone looking for a bandage. He’d found a pile of blank postcards, and figured out that after the first three postcards, the handwriting had changed. After that, all the cards and gifts were really from his aunt. And that’s when Joon-hyung started having trouble in competition.

His therapist agrees that that must have been quite a shock, and that he probably felt like he’d lost his only connection with his mother. He has faith that they can solve his problem now that they know what caused it.

Shi-ho is having trouble in practice, dropping her ball over and over again. She gets frustrated and goes to her bag where she has bread stashed, and shoves great huge bites in her mouth.

Later Joon-hyung sits at a convenience store, and he sees Jae-yi and Bok-ju drive up right in front of him. He complains loudly to himself, upset that he gave Bok-ju a chance to hang out with Jae-yi and she wore such a frumpy dress. As Joon-hyung watches, thoroughly amused, Bok-ju deep-bows to Jae-yi and heads downstairs into the subway station.

She re-emerges a few minutes later in her comfy sweats, and Joon-hyung follows her to the street corner. He reveals himself, and she doesn’t even look surprised to see him lurking around her anymore.

Joon-hyung teases that he sure hopes she didn’t wear a dress to the concert, because Jae-yi doesn’t like women who look too feminine. She glares at him, and he admits that he’s joking. When she gets mad, he reminds her that he made that date happen, and she thanks him for the tickets. Joon-hyung asks if Bok-ju had a good time, and a giant smile breaks over her face.

He suddenly yells and grabs Bok-ju to whirl her around as a car nears their corner. The car sends up a massive wave of water, and Joon-hyung heroically… cowers behind Bok-ju. PWAHAHAHA. Bok-ju screams in rage and chases Joon-hyung through the streets.

Shi-ho wakes in the infirmary, and Dr. Go tells her that she had a sudden stomach cramp. She asks Shi-ho if she’s been stressed lately and wonders if it’s because of a guy.

That guy is currently trying to avoid being pummeled by Bok-ju, who’s soaking wet and hopping mad. He grabs her sweater and dries her hair vigorously, enjoying the mess he makes of her head. He reaches out to smooth her hair back down, and as he’s fixing her bangs, there’s this moment where Joon-hyung seems extra aware of how close Bok-ju’s face is.

Flustered, he tosses the sweater over Bok-ju’s head and turns away. They sit, and Joon-hyung asks if Jae-yi noticed that Bok-ju likes him. She says he didn’t, adding that she doesn’t want him to find out about her weightlifting.

She shows Joon-hyung her calluses, but he says that’s no big deal and that he’d be happy to be with her since she can take care of herself. Though she jokes that he’s good with words, the look on his face is dead serious.

Joon-hyung points to the pond behind them and says that a wish-granting toad lives there. She tells him to work on his creativity, hee, but he swears that if you pray hard enough, the toad will grant your wish. He suggests that Bok-ju pray to the toad to make her and Jae-yi end up as a couple.

Bok-ju sneezes, and Joon-hyung scoots away from her, saying that he can’t afford to catch a cold. He tries to leave, but she grabs his arm and yanks him back to her with a big grin. She takes his face in her hands and Joon-hyung looks alarmed, then closes his eyes in anticipation of a kiss… and Bok-ju sneezes right in his face. HA.

She crows about how strong her germs are and how he’ll get the worst cold ever, and the worst threat Joon-hyung can think of is that he’ll kiss her and give the cold right back. That’s not a threat, sweetie, that’s a reward.

Bok-ju’s dad is worried about her coaches’ suggestion that she move up a weight class. Her coaches are worried that he won’t consent to the change in her training, and he surprises them by showing up to discuss it.

The coaches talk to Bok-ju after her father leaves, and tell her that he gave his permission. They offer to help her increase her weight as safely as possible, explaining that they think her current weight class is too competitive, while the one just above it has no real contenders.

They only want her to increase her weight by 3-4 kilos (about 6-8 pounds), but to Bok-ju, it means disappointing Jae-yi. The coaches leave the decision to Bok-ju, but they make it clear that this is what they expect of her.

Bok-ju calls her father to yell at him for giving permission without talking to her first. She whines that gaining weight is hard, and he tells her that being a weightlifter means continually challenging herself. After he hangs up, Nan-hee and Seon-ok offer their support as well, but Bok-ju moans that that’s not why she’s upset.

Joon-hyung tells his coach that he’s ready to enter another swim meet, just to practice. Even though it’s a beginner race, his coach likes the idea and agrees, but that cough Joon-hyung is nursing is concerning.

He sees Bok-ju and runs over to tell her to take responsibility for his cold, heh. He notices that she seems down, and she tells him that she has to move up a weight class. He’s the only one who knows why she doesn’t want to do it, but he doesn’t think it’s really a problem since she’s not actually seeing Jae-yi to lose weight.

He’s being pretty supportive, but Bok-ju is too upset to see it and lashes out. She tells him that it’s easy for him to say because it’s not his problem, and says that he has no idea how the world works because he’s from a good family, a natural athlete, and good-looking on top of everything else. Poor Joon-hyung, he looks genuinely hurt at her harsh words.

Bok-ju grumbles all the way to the weightlifting training room, and when she gets there, Coach Choi asks if she’s made up her mind. Bok-ju hesitantly tells her she’ll give it a try, and the coaches are thrilled.

Coach Choi takes charge of Bok-ju’s diet, making her eat tray after tray of food. It shows when she’s put on weight at her next appointment with Jae-yi, so he bumps up her in-office treatments. That makes Coach Choi’s weigh-in off by half a pound, and Bok-ju pretends not to know why her weight is bouncing up and down.

Joon-hyung’s cold hangs on tenaciously, and his friends worry about his swimming in the upcoming meet while he’s still sick. Shi-ho sits next to him at the lunch table and Joon-hyung’s friends scatter, leaving him to deal with her alone.

She asks if Joon-hyung will be okay competing with a cold, but Joon-hyung says that she’s acting like a stalker. Shi-ho responds that she’s desperate, that he’s all she has to hang onto, but Joon-hyung says that’s all in her head. Hurt, Shi-ho promises to leave him alone.

As she leaves the cafeteria, Joon-hyung’s sunbae Ki-seok says to Shi-ho that it looks like Joon-hyung rejected her again. He says that it’s demeaning to her, and asks if that’s why she keeps rejecting him. He promises to treat her better than Joon-hyung, but she just tells him to get lost.

Bok-ju’s dad and uncle Dae-ho try to bring an entire vat of chicken soup to her at her dorm, refusing to listen to her protests. Bok-ju hollers that she can’t eat this much, but her dad is desperate to help her gain weight before the next competition in a few weeks. Coach Choi solves the issue by easily picking up the barrel of soup (making Dae-ho look like a huge wimp, hee) and carrying it into the building, along with the several pizzas she brought.

Nan-hee and Seon-ok help Bok-ju eat the massive piles of food, counting themselves luckier than the gymnasts who have to pick at their food like birds. While Seon-ok is off getting drinks, Nan-hee accidentally sees a text reminding Bok-ju of her next appointment at Jae-yi’s clinic.

Bok-ju takes Nan-hee to the weight clinic to show her Jae-yi, the real reason she’s going there. Nan-hee absorbs the situation and calls Bok-ju crazy, and Bok-ju agrees but says she just wants to see him. Ever the best friend, Nan-hee tells Bok-ju that she can see why, and the two girls squeal over Bok-ju’s crush on him.

The day before Joon-hyung’s swim meet, he’s still pretty sick, and his roommate Tae-kwon fusses over him like a mother hen. Shi-ho texts Tae-kwon to come outside, and hands over some ginger tea she made for Joon-hyung’s cough. Tae-kwon gives it to Joon-hyung without telling him where it came from.

Nan-hee listens as Bok-ju chatters on about all of Jae-yi’s perfections, swooning over him right along with her friend. Seon-ok finds them, annoyed that they left without her, and accuses them of talking about her behind her back. But they assure her that’s not the case, and head out together.

In the morning, Seon-ok offers Bok-ju some of her breakfast to help her gain weight. Nan-hee pretends to choke and when Seon-ok goes to get her some water, she stuffs the extra sausage in her own mouth while Bok-ju shoots her a grateful look. Nan-hee helps Bok-ju get ready for her appointment that afternoon, doing her hair in adorable pigtails and finding her a cute outfit to wear.

Bok-ju’s father calls to tell her that he contacted an old friend and bought thirty special abalone just for her. He tells her to come by the restaurant later to eat them, and not to bring her friends this time — they’re all for her.

Joon-hyung bikes past Bok-ju on his way to his swim meet. He asks her to send him some positive energy, but Bok-ju is still annoyed with him and says she hopes he screws up.

Jae-yi is confused when Bok-ju has put on weight again. She apologizes for disappointing him, but he commiserates that the diet plan is hard, and warns her that it’s difficult to lose weight because people socialize around food so much.

Jae-yi brings up Joon-hyung’s competition, seeming as nervous as Joon-hyung is about it. Bok-ju says she’s sure he’ll be fine, but Jae-yi says that Joon-hyung is actually pretty tender-hearted, and that this competition is really important to him. He tells her about how Joon-hyung has been making starting mistakes for a couple of years, and that if it weren’t for that, he’d be good enough for the national team.

Bok-ju heads home, feeling terrible about the way she spoke to Joon-hyung earlier. She stops at the wishing fountain and tosses a coin in, wishing that Joon-hyung will do well at his competition today.

Shi-ho shows up secretly to watch Joon-hyung swim, and he sits in the dressing room thinking about his therapist’s advice. He’d told Joon-hyung to try not to focus on his symptoms, but to think of something else when he gets nervous. Joon-hyung counts down from ten to one, trying his hardest not to think about his mother.

The moment Joon-hyung steps onto the starting block, the ringing in his ears begins and his vision blurs. Oh no. He tries to ignore his symptoms and focus on the water, but he’s so busy counting that he misses the starting whistle altogether.

He manages to make a good dive and swims the race, but those few precious seconds land him in fourth place. Shi-ho waits outside the venue with more ginger tea, but she misses Joon-hyung as he leaves in a different direction.

Bok-ju sees the race results online, and starts and stops several texts to Joon-hyung. Instead she takes out a piece of paper, deciding to cheer him up in a different way. She texts him as he’s taking cold medicine given to him by his aunt and uncle, and he tells her he’s heading back to school soon.

Bok-ju waits for him near the wishing fountain, and gives him the little origami toad she made for him. Awww, that’s sweet. She acts like it’s no big deal, but Joon-hyung seems really touched by her gift, even though the toad is wrinkled and a little lopsided.

He calls the toad “swag” like Bok-ju and her friends always say, and they bicker over whether or not he’s a copycat. Bok-ju apologizes for being mean to Joon-hyung earlier, and he tells her that he’ll be doing a lot better very soon.

As Shi-ho walks back to school, she runs across Bok-ju and Joon-hyung on the other side of the street, bickering again. Shi-ho calls Joon-hyung and watches as he ignores her call, and then she angrily tosses the ginger tea in the garbage.

Bok-ju takes Joon-hyung to her father’s restaurant to share those fancy abalone with him. Dad and Uncle Dae-ho glare at Joon-hyung suspiciously, and Dad recognizes him from the time he came before and paid off a nonexistent tab. Dae-ho is more interested in why Bok-ju is bringing a boy home for the first time, but she says they’re just friends.

Dad reluctantly serves the abalone to Bok-ju and Joon-hyung, then hovers over the table to growl every time Joon-hyung picks up his chopsticks, hee. Joon-hyung tries to decline the food, seeing that Dad obviously doesn’t want him to have any, and Bok-ju has to send her father to the kitchen before Joon-hyung will eat.

He finally digs in enthusiastically, until he spots Dad and Dae-ho staring at him through the tiny kitchen window. Dad clearly thinks this young upstart isn’t good enough for his baby girl, though Dae-ho thinks he’s way out of Bok-ju’s league, and she’s the one who likes Joon-hyung more.

Later Bok-ju takes Joon-hyung to an overlook with a gorgeous view, and asks him if her neighborhood isn’t very pretty. He agrees it’s pretty, though he’s not looking at the view when he says the words — he’s looking at Bok-ju.

Bok-ju asks what causes Joon-hyung’s trauma, but he avoids answering the question. He tells her that Jae-yi was the one who took him to a pool when he was a kid and got him hooked on swimming, and she asks if that was when his personality changed. He thinks it was, though he admits that swimming is much more stressful for him these days.

Bok-ju agrees that their sports would be more fun if they could just enjoy them and not worry about scores. They both holler into the night that they hate having to be ranked, though Bok-ju acknowledges that it’s part of being an athlete.

Bok-ju tells Joon-hyung that she can tell by looking at him that he’ll be successful, because there’s something strong in his eyes. He leans in and teases her, “Are you getting sucked into my eyes?” Bok-ju teases back that she is, and Joon-hyung holds her gaze just a bit longer than necessary for it to be just a joke. He watches her as she enjoys the view of the city, something new and interesting sparking in his eyes.

Back at the dorm, Shi-ho overhears Nan-hee and Seon-ok talking about Bok-ju’s needing to gain weight. She goes back to their room and starts rifling through Bok-ju’s things, and finds her weight loss diary.

Joon-hyung feels much better by the time he and Bok-ju walk back to the dorms. He asks Bok-ju how long she intends to keep lying about losing weight, then looks immediately sorry he mentioned it.

She says sadly that she should end it soon, and to avoid the awkward moment, Joon-hyung yells that there’s a toad in the fountain. Bok-ju thinks he’s teasing her again, but he swears there really is a big toad there. Bok-ju walks away, and Joon-hyung looks over at the very real toad sitting in the wishing fountain.

Tae-kwon checks in with Joon-hyung when he gets back to their room, but this time when Joon-hyung says he’s okay, he really means it. The way he sees it, he wasn’t disqualified today, which is a definite improvement. He takes out his origami toad and says how cute it is, obviously referring to Bok-ju.

He jogs by the weightlifting gym the next morning, and happens to see Shi-ho heading inside looking angry. He thinks it’s strange for her to be there, but goes on his way.

Soon after, Bok-ju is called home by her dad. She enters the restaurant to find both of her coaches sitting there with Dad, all three of them looking upset. Dad takes out Bok-ju’s weight loss diary and throws it on the table, demanding to know what it is.

COMMENTS

Well, it’s going to hit the fan now. Bok-ju’s father and coaches are going to be incredibly upset with her for lying to them and for losing weight behind their backs, and I already hurt for Bok-ju, for the damage control she’s going to have to do. She’s never really been that interested in losing weight beyond the fact that it gained her some approval from Jae-yi, which I really like about her. I actually love that the show isn’t making Bok-ju’s weight loss or gain about anything more than that. I like that, while the show touches on the fact that the female weightlifters aren’t considered “feminine” by outsiders, Bok-ju herself has never internalized that or felt she needed to change herself to fit into society’s standards. It has nothing to do with how attractive she feels — she only ever bought into Jae-yi’s program to have a reason to see him regularly.

The only thing I do find as a weakness in the plot is Bok-ju’s dad — why is he so invested in Bok-ju’s becoming a successful weightlifter? I’m not saying there aren’t good reasons for him to be, it’s just that we haven’t been told what they are. Does he want her to follow her dreams? Is weightlifting a way for Bok-ju to accomplish something that she couldn’t otherwise accomplish? I think there are probably many reasons why her father might be worried about whether she succeeds at this or not, I just wish the show would let us in on them. Maybe we’ll find out in the fallout of the discovery of her seeing a weight loss doctor.

Speaking of which, I was hoping that Shi-ho wouldn’t go down the dark path, but it looks like she’s heading that way. What I like about her character is that she’s not just a cookie-cutter second lead, out to destroy the lead girl because she thinks she’s stealing her man as if there’s nothing else happening in her life than that. Shi-ho has a lot going on other than her determination to get Joon-hyung back, and she seems like a pretty nice girl when things are going well for her. But I strongly suspect that the pressure of her failure to make the national team, combined with a growing eating disorder and what’s becoming an unhealthy obsession with Joon-hyung, are driving her off the deep end. It makes her a more complex and compelling character with problems and challenges of her own, instead of just a story device to get between the leading couple to keep them apart.

I can’t help it, I just find Joon-hyung to be the sweetest thing on the planet. Yeah he’s a pest, but he’s a super-sweet pest, and he really does seem to like Bok-ju for who she is. He’s starting to finally realize it, noticing things like her pretty face and having some fairly intense feeeelings when they get close to each other. I nearly died when Bok-ju pulled him close to sneeze on him and Joon-hyung closed his eyes, anticipating a kiss. The boy was ready and willing to go to the next level in that moment — if only Bok-ju knew it! She’s going to be so surprised when she finds out that Joon-hyung has been pestering her because he likes her.

It’s great how Bok-ju’s secret of losing weight at Jae-yi’s clinic has gone from being the biggest irritant between Bok-ju and Joon-hyung, to the thing that’s drawing them together. Their growing friendship is as cute and sweet as I hoped it would be, and I’m glad they’re still griping at each other every chance they get, because it’s so much fun to watch. Once Bok-ju learned that her coaches want her to move up a weight class, Joon-hyung became the only person she could talk to about the reason she doesn’t want to do it, and surprisingly, he’s being pretty dang supportive of her. I love that he doesn’t think her weight is a problem (or her calluses for that matter), and just obviously likes her the way she is. But more than that, I love that he’s being a good friend to Bok-ju, right when she really needs it. I don’t want to see Bok-ju’s heart broken by Jae-yi, but if it has to happen, I’m glad she’s got Joon-hyung there telling her that she’s just fine the way she is.

I still feel a disconnect with my meta-knowledge the Lee Sung-kyung isn't even fat at all, but damn this show is doing it all right with the friendship and the growing romance. Of course, as expected from the writer of Oh My Ghostess, it's bound to be good. But Nam Joo-hyuk turning up his charm while being a hilarious petty manchild does things to me. He and Sung-kyung make such an adorable pair. Plus, I love how the female spirit is very much alive in this show. I cheer every time for Bok-joo and her friends. ❤️

She's not supposed to be fat, she's gotta be heavy with muscles. Anyway, good thing that LSK is a model so she's used to guys falling for her all the time, am sure. The staring contest, girl doesn't give a dime, she's so into Jae Yi to even recognize guy in front of her is falling slowly but surely.

Thank you! I've been mildly annoyed by the amount of people that keep complaining about Bok Joo not being fat. I get it, we typically think of weightlifters as big and buff and I think the athlete that inspired this drama is of a larger build but that doesn't mean it's unbelievable to think that they're not necessarily fat. I've seen plenty of female weightlifters professional and otherwise that definitely don't look fat or big.
Not attacking anyone. I get that it's a misconception but it just isn't that glaring to me.

My niece used to do Crossfit. She is 5' 2" about 152cm I don't know what she weighed then but she could squat lift 196 lbs. about 90k. She was still small but she was "thick" and rock hard. Bullets would have bounced off her behind. She blew out her knee and doesn't lift anymore. Now she looks thin and fit. I like her better this way. I told her when I found out what she was doing that she'd eventually be sorry. Three months later she needed a knee operation. She looks great now and she's happy. If this girl were a weight lifter she would possibly be bulky looking but not in any way fat.

Since I kept seeing LSK in all her glamorous self these past few weeks in a lot of events, I was actually surprised at how convincing she looked to me in the show (I just start watching the show), her heavy movements and her build, I truly believed Bok Joo is tall and bulky even though I just saw how thin LSK she is in real life, and I admire her efforts for that, truly talented

With her height and weight she isn't supposed to be fat, I am her height(175cm) and weight (58kg) and I am considered as medium .
Also weighlifters classes aren't all that big, some of them are 48kg and 53-58kg's

Bok joo is a top class athlete atleast in her college. She is not supposed to be fat at all. There are different categories for weightlifters to compete in. She is supposed to be strong is all.
Also, according to certain articles apparently LSK has gained around 11 pounds for tge role. I know thats not much but there is determination to play a role convincingly there. I love that gained weight for the role, risking her modelling career.

I think in the drama she's in the 58kg class. Here are photos of Olympic weightlifters.

You don't have to be fat to be a weightlifter and those pictures show normal sized women. I think you have a wrong idea about weightlifters. It is highly dependent on the weight class.

The women in the pictures are surely not fat, but their thighs are abnormally big for a person of that weight.
The actress of course cannot have that sort of thighs, unless they pad her up. When she's walking in the street, her thighs seem really thin.

Actually what surprised me more is the gymnasts. They are supposed to be thinner than that, and most of them don't have any breasts to speak of, but the 2nd lead does not have a gymnast body - so many skinny Korean actresses would fit the role better in this respect.

And also I wasn't saying fat=weightlifters. I was referring to her weight loss program. I hope that clears it (?).

Just to be clear, weight lifters are NOT fat. They gain weight to gain muscle...every other part of the body stays lean. What's not happening correctly here is that the drama is not showing enough of the weightlifting and exercising scenes. You definitely eat a lot while training - especially protein after working out - but then, a few weeks before a major competition you switch to high protein and very few carbs...eggs, nuts, salmon, beef and green veggies -no sugar - and the fat coating your muscles comes sliding off.

I understand eating a lot of protein etc.
But surely not fried chicken, wurstels and hamburgers, which are full of useless saturated fat.
I thought athletes of every discipline should eat healthily.
Here we just see them gobbling up all sorts of junk food.

Okay I get that weightlifters are not fat, but the part I don't get is how she was able to enroll in an obesity clinic when she's not obese. I feel a disconnect not because I believe weightlifters are fat, but because the show keeps talking about her like she's fat. This could be an issue of translation but I feel like they talk about her like she's really hefty when she's just tall and thin. I feel a similar disconnect when they talk about her friends being scary and intimidating when I don't find them scary or intimidating at all.

Don't you remember that the in-college doc assumed the pretty tall girl Jae yi mentioned is a model. Meaning anyone can go to a weight clinic as per their requirement. They can go to gain or loose and if you find yourself enrolling will the doc be like No. He'll be glad to get paid in real life scenario atleast.

Idk if it's just me...but I think I heard the male coach addressing Bok Joo's father as 'sunbaenim'. Maybe that's why father is super concerned over Bok Joo's athletic career, because he was ex weightlifter too?

I remember Bok Joo talking about how she started loving weightlifting after going to the gym with her dad. And when she called him to complain about his decision w/out consulting her, she said that he knows exactly how hard it is to change weight classes. Also, they're EXTREMELY polite to him. Like he's not JUST another student's parent. The way they treat him, it's not just respect out of politeness, but respect out of utter admiration. Especially if their sunbae also happened to be the father of one of the team's best players.

Yeah I also thought that everybody is super polite in front of the father. If that's the case, then it would explain why he is super angry at Bok Joo for going on a diet when she should have bulked up.

Precisely, but i think that 'sunbaenim' was lost in translation and hence the confusion. I hope they will give us a peek into daddy dearest's story too

yeah, I think her dad is an ex-athlete/senior. maybe he was even on the same team as her coach or something like that.. you can see that they were extra concerned about his opinion... bokjoo is an adult, she could perfectly be responsible for the decision of changing or not her weight class (just liker her colleague did).

I thought Joon-hyung wanted to save Bok-ju from incoming car when he pulled her. I was ready to roll my eyes since... urrrgh... come on... it's so cliche... not to mention... cheesy. But I forgot that it's Joon-hyung that we're talking about, so of course he used Bokju to shield him from water splash instead. What was I expecting? LOL

I know I'm supposed to be mad at him for treating a lady like that, but that scene is sooooo hilarious I just can't... >.<

...And what was Joon-hyung thinking when Bok-ju pulled his face closer? Why did he close his eyes? :P

This is the best episode so far. I was grinning from ear to ear like an idiot for the entire episode. Every week, I'm falling harder and harder with this show. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju is SWAAAAAG!!!

Haha! Yeah, I thought it was going to be a typical kdrama scene with the guy protecting the girl but nope! Joon Hyung was using Bok Joo as a shield. I loved that change up. Totally hilarious! I think Nam Joo Hyuk is doing a great job with all the subtle expressions and emotions. Can't wait until next week!

Yeay, finally! The kind of show that warms my heart in the cold winter weather. I get all warm and mushy whenever I watch this drama. Joon Hyung is like a cute little puppy, hankering for love and attention from Bok-Joo.. He is quite the opposite of Jae Yi, but still adorable that makes me feel like giving him a big hug and pet his head whenever he did something good.. I was rolling on my bed laughing when he use Bok-Joo as a shield instead of being the shield himself. LOL.. And despite the negative criticism over Lee Sung Kyung's acting, I found that she really pulls it off. She is nonchalant and doesn't even holdback when she is acting, so it makes everything really cute and adorable. Aahh, the show really warms your heart.. I love it!

Did a lot of skipping, mostly whenever Joon-hyung's entitled ex appeared. I love how straight he is with her about her behavior, but not enough to sit through scene after scene of her with that pinched expression on her face.

Nam Joo-hyuk is seriously gorgeous in this drama. I find myself heeheeheeing like a little kid (or like the ahjumma that I am) during his scenes with Lee Sung-kyung. I really think this has become my favorite of the dramas currently airing. The magic that was "The Man Living in Our House" has faded for me.

That said, I hated the scene where the female coach pressured Bok-ju into saying yes to a higher weight class. I wanted to knock the two coaches' heads together – Bok-ju's body language was very clear, but all they cared about was getting what they wanted. That scene drove home to me just how vulnerable children are, and how important it is for adults not to push an agenda onto them.

I thought it was to imply that they were surprised by the sudden intimacy. But I've also seen before that hiccups signify that the person having them is having dirty thoughts, haha. In Korean context, of course.

I thought in kdramas, people hiccup when they're nervous: close proximity with a crush, thinking something dirty, or just plain lying.

But Bok Joo is in a athlete college and her major is weightlifting. It's not a hobby, it's her major. Her seniors' concerns about a job and having the ability to compete professionally after they graduate is a real concern. They want her to do well, and she is an elite athlete and this is her job. They don't know about her crush on the doctor. If it weren't for the crush, she'd do what she'd have to do to excel in her sport. It's like was Joon Hyung said when Bok Joo mentioned the weight increase: "You have to do what you have to do, you're an athlete. (i.e., it's your job) It's not like you're going to the clinic to lose weight, you're going to see my brother." Yeah, she has to do her job and do what she needs to do. So I didn't think it was pressure from her athletes as much as she would have done it but felt the pressure of her personal situation with Jae Yi.

You know what, that makes a lot of sense. Actually, I hate the whole subplot with Jae-yi. I know Bok-ju is a child and basically doesn't know better, but to be hiding who she is and practically playing with her weight over a guy? I've done some stupid things in my time, but lying is a bridge too far.

Required fields are marked *

At first I too thought it wasn't fair that the coaches were putting the pressure on Bok-ju, but then I realized that's really a selfish way of thinking. Bok-ju has the opportunity to help her teammates by gaining weight so they have can also have a chance to medal in the different weight divisions and get offers after graduation. We've seen the coaches stress the importance of team work so this is in line with that. And the coaches are more experienced, they can see Bok-ju's untapped potential that she may not even be aware of.

This is a coming of age story, Bok-ju is maturing she could have easily done the childish and selfish thing and said no to her coaches and continue to focus on losing weight to get closer to her crush in a dishonest manner. But she reluctantly made the sacrifice knowing this is for the best, unfortunately she ended up getting caught between the two options since Shi-ho had to butt in and create further problem. But I think the tough time will make Bok-ju stronger and she'll come to realize who truly supports and loves her after this.

Selfish and childish? Why she should be the one to sacrifice her looks to give her team members a chance? There are many girls in the team (the one with the horrid yellow hair, for example) which are fatter than her, and could compete in the higher categories. I think her two-ponytails friend is easily about 60 kg.
It is perfectly possible to give your all in your own category, and keep a figure which will attract men, because she's not only an athlete but a person, who also wants a relationship, as any other girl of her age.
Childish, you say? Immature? Why, what she did was not childish? Trying to please both sides, over-stuffing herself one moment and going for slimming treatments the other? That was the most childish thing in the world, in my opinion.
She should make up her mind and stick to her guns like an adult.
The coach saw her deeply unhappy face but didn't give a sh*t. She was completely clueless. Is that how a coach behaves?
Not to mention the very unhealthy menu and over-stuffing like a goose. Ugh!

Keep in mind, she has to gain weight because that's her major, it's her job. She's a weightlifter. Of course, she's entitled to being in a relationship and all but it's like being a student: your job is to study and work and if you can balance that and have a relationship, ok. But you shouldn't throw away studying just to be in a relationship.

Just like Bokju should focus on being successful on what helps her graduate which is right now, getting to a higher weight class, before minding how good she looks. Some things need to be sacrificed in order to be successful. A person needs to sacrifice some friday nights and picking up guys/girls to study.

The supporting cast is doing a good job. Lots of friendship and comaderie between team mates and fellow athletes. Love it!

I can see why Joon Hyung is falling for Bok Ju. He likes her just the way she is. Bok Ju is unpretentious and super adorable in a dorky way.

When he was looking at Bok Ju , rather than looking at the view , and saying PRETTY, referring to her, was one of the best scenes in this show so far.

It is so refreshing to see that, he sees BOK JU pretty without her being decked up as a doll and without seeing her in the feminine avatar. He really is mesmerized by her courage, kindness and all the inner qualities in her, rather than her outside look. That is the most sweetest thing i have come across a k-drama.

He has fallen so deeply for her, and he isnt even aware of it yet. He somehow momentarily forgot about the competition, when he was with Bok ju. I hope, we get to see him overcoming the trauma soon, and i wish that he remembers all the sweet cute moments of Bok Ju , when he is in any swimming competition, to divert his focus away from the trauma, so he could succeed. Sometimes, much needed cheer from someone , really makes you go face your fears and emerges as a winner.

Bok Ju has to choose one. Her profession, or her personal life. I wish she tells the truth sooner to Jae Yi, and i know he will support her in weightlifting and he might be of a help to Bok ju later. He is a kind , sweet guy.

I wish that Seon Ok also knew the whole story about Bok Ju's crush. She is actually very wise and smart from the 3 of them. She speaks sense almost all the time. I love the actress playing Seon Ok. Dont know her name, but she got some very good screen presence.

Loving the show, loving the characters, loving the development of the story. Fresh, light, bubbly, fluffy and full of cuteness,i hope this show continues to do better and better.

I don't get the whole "either personal life or weight-lifting" thing. She can go on weight-lifting at her own weight category, as she has done till now. And be a presentable woman outside the sports world.
Most of all, she has to discover more healthy ways of eating, because her eating so far is really unspeakable, and the coaches seem to know nothing about nutrition, to encourage their team to eat hamburgers and fried chicken, sausages and such instead of a more balanced meal.

I love that Joon-hyung is falling for Bok-ju first, and EVEN CLOSED HIS EYES FOR A KISS HAHAHA. He was so ready to be kissed by Bok-ju omg. And then when he cowered behind Bok-ju so he wouldn't get splashed by water - I was dying. Love it when dramas subvert tropes like that HAHA.

All the friendships in this show are the cutest! Bok-ju, Nan-hee, and Seon-ok, as well as Joon-hyung and Tae-kwon are all kinds of friendship goals right here. I love how Tae-kwon was the ever supportive housekeeper for Joon-hyung in this episode, aw.

And man, the way Joon-hyung looks at Bok-ju is the best. His crush is of gargantuan proportions now and I love that he's falling in love with the real Bok-ju, not the Bok-ju that she herself thinks is likeable. Arggggh why are they so cute??

In my opinion, this has been the best episode yet! I love the leaps and bounds made in Bok-ju and Joon-hyung's friendship. At the same time, seeing their struggles as athletes (and young university students) has been awesome as well. It adds a realness... a relatable quality to these characters. This show has such a good balance of humor and tenderness that really just endears me to it sincerely.
I'm truly enjoying this show so much. Bok-ju is such a lovable heroine, whilst you can't help but laugh good naturally at Joon-hyung's antics. Every time the two of them are on screen together I can't help but smile.

Omagaaaah.
This episode was laugh out loud hilarious.
First 15 minutes were pitch perfect to me. From the water splashing scene to the almost kiss/virus transmission scene. Our two leads are so freaking cute. We need a ship name stat.

I was getting worried about Bok Joo on her losing and gaining weight really quickly. I wouldn't know but does that confuse the body/take a toll on it at some point? Also is Doc hyung's treatment supposed to be that he uses a fat burning machine type to concentrate fat loss in some areas? Or is it like, pills? Or just the diet plan? I might have missed that somewhere.

Anyway.
Ahhh.
Puppy saying 'it's pretty' while staring directly at her was waaaaaa. Also when he lights up seeing her text him for the first time. He is gonna be the death of me.

Also love it when lead couples have a special place representing their ship and I like that fountain.

Watching Shi Ho 'go there' was hard. But it didn't look like she was happy to do it. Like some I'm still hoping she'd be friends with Bok Joo.

Lol I love how we can see just how freeing it is for BJ to be able to squee about her crush out loud with Nan Hee.

Finally,
Tae Kwon and Jooh Hyung bromance ❤️

Joon-hyung threatening to kiss Bok-ju if she makes him catch a cold? LOL Boy do you realize what you're saying or you really mean it or it's a slip out of your frustration as you've fallen harder for this girl?

I'm disappointed too that the older people don't seem aware abt Bok-ju feelings abt the weight change. I also feel sorry that Bok-ju doesn't have people to share her problems with. Someone of a mother figure whom she can talk abt her crush. Maybe in the next eps more ppl become more considerate of her, but during these eps when she found herself helplessly smitten by the prince perfect that is Jae Yi, who happens to be the hyung of a boy whose life mission is to tease her plus other pressure in the athlete life, i can't help but feel sorry for this girl. People see her as all strong & dependable, while she's still young & sometimes vulnerable like everyone else. That being said, I'm happy that Joon-hyung becomes her support. And Nan-hee! The scenes where the girls spaz over Jae-yi & when Nan-hee helps Bok-ju dress up for her appointment are so heartwarming. She's being so supportive. And no major make over is done, which make me like it even more. It's a special bond you share with your bestfriends. Spazzing over charming guys with your besties can feel even better than having crush on those charming guys alone.

Watching this drama makes me smile from ear to ear as well as feel a bit mushy inside. Can't wait to watch the next eps!

I'm really liking the show. I love the bickering between the main leads, its cute and compelling at the same time. I look forward to their interactions in every episode. But one thing that I don't like about this show is its pace, I would have preferred it if it had a faster pace. Sometimes it seems to drag. And I don't find it believable that Jae-yi would be interested in a young college girl. Its just not believable to me. But this show has a heart.

I'm loving this show more and more. I just can't get enough of Bok Ju and Joong Hyun spending time together. :D How adorable are these two, bickering non-stop but doing things for each other at the same time? I loved that he bought the concert tickets for her and then asked if she had fun; he lighted up when she confirmed she had a happy date. And Bok Ju making efforts to cheer him up after learning about his trauma, that was also too cute.
But the best part was when JH thought that she was going to pass the cold with a kiss, haha!! That was priceless, he was definitely disappointed :D
I also laughed at how Nan Hee copied her looks on Bok Ju when she dolled her up. This show is so good with these small details too. Hope they keep being so good. :)

I know, but I think that Shi Ho will soon realize her mistake and will try to make amendments. She seems to be a good girl, only that she is desperate and at a low point in her life. I don't think being at a low point in her life excuses her actions. Our behavior is the only thing that determines whether or not we are good people. She has consistently disrespected Joon-hyung's clearly stated feelings AND his personal space. And now she's violating Bok-ju's privacy to the point of going to her dad! Those are not the actions of a good girl. (Also, aren't tattletales reviled in South Korea as much as they are in Western writing?)

yes she actually seems like a good girl, honestly! I also think bok joo is so much luckier than si ho, when she's facing a dilemma, she has two good friends, understanding coaches and a family that supports her (it's tough love i guess but I guess they will still care for her no matter what her decisions are) whereas si ho.. it's just saddening to see her so lonely; I know her actions are terrible but I still feel so bad for her. Her family gives her pressure by acting like they can pay for her training and all that, she doesn't even have an understanding coach and she has nobody. I'm really hoping that they will be friends and bok joo can just give her some warmth and support.

I love this show. It reminds me of my high school crush and how I acted in a similar fashion to Kim Bok-ju every time he said or did something. I would read into everything he did and put a label on it. He could say "Hi" and I'd give another one of our kids a name and add a pet to our ever-growing family. I bet when he handed her that gum she was half hoping he'd look away so she could put it in her purse and frame and name it when she got home(I would have). I'm just a bit sad because I can see heartbreak in her future. even if she escaped being rejected by him and actually dated him, there would be a certain imbalance to the relationship. To her he probably is this great person who can do no wrong and when she realises just he is just as human as the next person that may burn some. Still, it's fun to watch.

finally Joon Hyung is starting to realise his feeling for Bok Joo and she's starting to see his other sides other than his teasing and playful persona!! :D I love how they are getting closer to each other ad starting to be real friends with him being a real and supportive friend for her when she needs him and with her trying her best to chear him up!! hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh she even gave him the ambalone that her father told her brought them specially for her!! LOL now even her family think she likes Joon Hyung!! hhhhhhhhhhhhh and I love the fact that they are still teasing each other whenever there is a chance!! I don't want that to end!! they bickering i so cute and lovely that I want it to remain even when they start falling for each other though Joonh Hyug already fell for her!! :D
Shi Ho went too far and now she lost the any chance to make me fel sorry for her!! what she did is low and pathetic and could ruin Bok Joo's career and at best makee her suffer from her coaches and father cold shoulder for sometime and all that because she's despirate and feeling down and stressed and jealous?!! don't really care!! she's not the only one having a hard time but her focus is on gaining her past instead of standing on her feet by her own and she deseerves what she'll get!! I really love how Joon Hyung made it clear for her (for the 10000000th time I think but she's just deaf to hear him) that she doesn't want or ned him but it's only in her heead and she needs to work to solve her problems herself though again she didn't hear what he said and she went to ruin Bok Joo's life instead of finding a solution to her troubles!! and now we know the other reason why Joon Hyun's sunbae hate Joon Hyung this much and want to make him suffer, it's because he was lost to him again and got and still getting rejected by Shi Ho who chose Joon Hyung over him and still runnig after Joon Hyung and won't look his way even now!!
the good thing is that Joon Hyung will be there for Bok Joo in her hard times and they'll get even closer now and Bok Joo will appreciate his actions even more!! give me more of my little cuties!! :D

"She’s going to be so surprised when she finds out that Joon-hyung has been pestering her because he likes her." Forget that. I'm waiting for the moment when HE figures out he has been pestering her because he likes her. He is close, but no cigar yet.

JH is so adorkable. He was completely flustered by when drying BJ's hair. Then he followed that with closing his eyes when she held his face to sneeze and he said he will return the virus even if he has to kiss her..lol. Is that a foreshadowing of things to come? When they were watching the nightview and they were staring at each other...ooo so cute. Can't wait for him to finally realize his feelings.

Shi Ho - I was really hoping she won't be an annoying second lead. I even felt sorry for her with losing out on the national team and all the pressure from her family to succeed. Now, I just want her to get off my screen. How could she go thru BJ's things and tell on her out of jealousy? She needs to stop trying to bring others down to make herself feel better. It never works.

Everyone who isn't watching this show is really missing out a truly heartfelt laugh out loud drama.

THANK YOU. I don't get all the sympathy for Shi-ho. Also, those mistakes she makes seem to me (a complete layperson) to be rookie issues, not the errors of an elite athlete who's stuck or plateauing.

My heart hums in so many scenes from this episode- transported back to college days of great friendships and budding romances.
The show is doing well in maintaining its breeziness and still has alot of heart and cute bits that makes you go awww at some point. Joon hyung and Bok joo are also very adorable together. I love their friendship and the support they give to another during hard times. The origami frog and the abalone was a very sweet thing to do. Our joon hyung is really smitten now.
Next episode will see Joon hyung being the one to cheer up bok joo when shit hits the fan.

I continue to click skip on Shi ho's part. I dont care if she more than just a plot device. Somehow i couldnt stomach her character. She has now sealed it for me with that pathetic and awful move of rummaging her roomates personal things and handing tha diet diary to her coaches. That was awfully low of her. The only saving grace is Joonhyung seeing it with his eyes she went to the Weightlifting building.

I forgot to add my fav scene when Bokjoo disclosed she has to put on weight. Joon hyung's reaction is normal- oh you need to move up weight class? Her weight isnt an issue to him and he also correctly pointed out Bok joo's interest to weight management class was purely for her doctor crush- she doesnt really have issues with her own weight.
I also note that she doesnt react when he calls he chubs anymore- it doesnt bother her.
and more than once he has said it- She's cute

I just watched 6 episodes in a row. This drama is so nice. I admit it took me to ep 4 to ignore Bok Jo's gestures. She did the same arm wrist flapping motion when she was going psychotic in CITT. Which I hated. And the character. So it was disconcerting seeing the same expressions and gestures here.
The actor playing JH has such a small face in spite of the PD making him flash his abs. Puppy looks so skinny for a national level swimmer.

Putting those aside-gosh this drama is so darn cute. I swear I was about to be bored with the ' BJ you're in danger.' But when he hid behind her I literally died laughing. Then did he really eat all 30 of the wild abalone for BJ? Gosh... boy has a lot of back peddling to do when he decides he is in love with BJ and then tries to be nice to her.

I am having so many disconcerting moments from recalling all the previous actors works. I am normally not bothered by it but there are so many familiar faces here I am having whiplash seeing them. All those actors from Doctors ( x2 ), W, CITT ( x2 ), OHYA, R1988, OMG, CAFK, etc are seriously contributing to my confusion. I don't even normally remember supporting cast members from previous dramas.
