Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Episode 12
by LollyPip
Even the promise of romance can sometimes feel awkward, especially when it’s not clear whether you’re friends, or dating, or something else entirely. Joon-hyung is desperate to prove himself to Bok-ju, but he’s got to be careful if he doesn’t want to scare her off. And when push comes to shove, caring for someone isn’t about things like flowers and fireworks — it’s about being the support that person needs in the most difficult times.
EPISODE 12: “Her bucket list”
Bok-ju follows the strange noise to the dorm kitchen, where she sees a girl in a nightgown, mindlessly eating everything in the fridge. The girl turns and Bok-ju sees that it’s Shi-ho, looking dazed and very ill.
Startled, Bok-ju asks what she’s doing, and Shi-ho seems to come back to herself. She looks at the pile of half-eaten food in her lap as if seeing it for the first time, and nervously heads back to their dorm room. She jumps in bed and hides under the covers, ignoring Bok-ju when she asks if she’s okay.
Bok-ju goes back to their room in the morning, and Shi-ho acts as if nothing happened. Bok-ju asks if she remembers last night, and Shi-ho says breezily that she’s been sleepwalking lately. But when she turns away her face drops, as if she’s not exactly telling the truth.
When Bok-ju asks if she’s okay and mentions the ghost rumors, Shi-ho’s voice goes hard. She tells Bok-ju to worry about herself, then leaves. She goes to the bathroom and thinks about the times she’s sleepwalked, and looks up the side effects of sleeping pills. Oh no, that’s not good.
Bok-ju runs into Joon-hyung and Tae-kwon on her way out of the dorm, and Tae-kwon gets all excited to see her, grabbing her hand tightly. Joon-hyung is adorably focused on the fact that Tae-kwon is touching Bok-ju, and he smacks Tae-kwon’s hand. Bok-ju starts to say something to Joon-hyung, and he has to shoo the oblivious Tae-kwon away.
Once alone, Bok-ju asks if Joon-hyung has seen Shi-ho lately. She starts to tell him what happened last night, but remembers Shi-ho telling her not to be so nosy, and changes her mind.
Joon-hyung suddenly starts hollering, and distracts Bok-ju long enough to slip her wallet back into her bag. Then he just acts like nothing happened, hee. He reminds Bok-ju that she agreed to try dating him for a month before she decides whether or not to return him, and asks if she wants to hang out later. He grabs her face, making her worry that he’s going to kiss her again, but he’s just teasing her and he says he’ll call her later.
The college gets a three-day break, and Coach Yoon tells his team to spend the break stuffing their faces and eating whatever they want. The gymnasts’ coach informs the girls that they’re all on a diet. The swim team is instructed to rest, and Joon-hyung has to leave his shorts behind to escape Tae-kwon’s clutches.
Bok-ju acts annoyed when Joon-hyung texts that he’s coming to pick her up, but she spends a long time primping at the mirror. Her dad comes in looking for Uncle Dae-ho, who’s been gone a lot lately, and Dad seems as if he’s not feeling well. Bok-ju is worried his dialysis isn’t working as well as it used to, but Dad says he’s fine.
Bok-ju finds Joon-hyung outside and complains, and he flusters her by saying that there’s nothing strange about meeting his girlfriend in front of her house. She counters that they’re just friends, though when Dad steps outside she grabs Joon-hyung in a headlock and drags him off. LOL.
Joon-hyung says he’s free all day, and asks what Bok-ju wants to do. He remembers her wish to go to an amusement park on a weekday, but she’s feeling cranky and grouches that it’s a childish idea. He pesters Bok-ju until she agrees, but then she remembers that she’s supposed to hang out with Seon-ok and Nan-hee later.
In order to get Bok-ju to the amusement park, Joon-hyung has to allow her to invite her friends, and the poor guy looks like he wants to cry at losing his chance to be alone with her. It gets even worse when he finds out that Nan-hee invited Tae-kwon, and aww, Tae-kwon looks happy to see Seon-ok.
The group crowds into a store selling cute headbands, and Joon-hyung swats off the one with devil horns that Tae-kwon puts on him. Then Bok-ju finds one with a fluffy white halo, and Tae-kwon puts on the devil horns and says they look like a couple. Joon-hyung nearly snatches his head off grabbing the devil horns back, desperately insisting that they belong to him and him only.
The viking ship ride makes Joon-hyung turn more than a little green, though the rest of the group have a great time. The next ride Bok-ju chooses goes upside down and spins (urk), but nobody else wants to ride it, so Joon-hyung valiantly agrees to go just to be alone with her.
Tae-kwon points out that Joon-hyung is afraid of heights, but Joon-hyung claims that he came to ride that ride, and must go on it immediately. They split up, and Joon-hyung is excited to have Bok-ju to himself, but he looks scared again when the ride starts. He screams like a giant baby through the whole thing, but he makes it out alive.
He goes to get some snacks, and remembers Bok-ju’s wish to share a drink with two straws with a boyfriend. He brings one back to the table, and the moment Bok-ju leans down to take a drink he ducks down too, and they come face to face.
Bok-ju’s heart thumps to see Joon-hyung so close, and he smiles at her and asks if her heart is fluttering. She mutters that he’s crazy, saying she was just startled, but the look on her face proves her lie.
Back at the dorm, Shi-ho is unable to fall asleep, and she reaches for her bottle of sleeping pills. She remembers a call she made to a doctor, who recommended she stop taking the pills and come in for a checkup, and she tosses the pills in the garbage.
Nan-hee calls Bok-ju to meet up with the group for the fireworks show. It starts before they find their friends, and Joon-hyung take advantage of the moment to fulfill another of Bok-ju’s wishes. He takes her hand in his, and tucks it into his jacket.
Bok-ju stares at him, stunned, and he asks if her heart is fluttering again. His teasing is a little too overwhelming and she snaps at him, and yanks her hand back. She calls him annoying, and goes off to look for their friends. Joon-hyung berates himself for pushing too hard when Bok-ju was already feeling uncomfortable.
They rejoin the group, and everyone takes out their phones to take pictures of the fireworks. Joon-hyung snaps a picture of Bok-ju’s face when she’s not paying attention. So cute. He decides to take a chance, and slips his hand into Bok-ju’s coat pocket with her hand.
Bok-ju’s heart thumps again, and this time she doesn’t pull her hand away. She looks up to see Joon-hyung staring at her in that utterly smitten way of his, and she can’t tear her eyes away.
Bok-ju goes to her piano lessons the next day, and her instructor says she’s too aggressive with the instrument. Bok-ju gets frustrated, wondering why she can’t manage to play correctly. She grumbles that Joon-hyung hasn’t called her all day.
Nan-hee calls Bok-ju, and says that Seon-ok hasn’t come back from their short vacation. She thinks Seon-ok isn’t able to leave home for some reason, so Bok-ju decides to go see her. Dad mentions that he’s going to dialysis later, but that Dae-ho is out again.
Bok-ju finds Seon-ok’s parents’ motel, and goes inside to find Seon-ok practicing her weightlifting lifts. Seon-ok goes to help some customers, and tells Bok-ju to wait for her in the office.
When she returns, Seon-ok tells Bok-ju that her parents want her to drop out of school, since there’s not much money in weightlifting as a profession. She says she doesn’t know what to do, but that she thinks she doesn’t have any real weightlifting talent.
She tells Bok-ju that her nickname in high school was Weightlifting Ghost, because she never left the gym. But she admits that it wasn’t that she loved weightlifting so much; she just didn’t want to go home, but ended up falling in love with the sport. Seon-ok adds that she envies Bok-ju, who has talent and a father who supports her.
Bok-ju’s father doesn’t look well during his dialysis, and afterward, he’s sweating and his nose begins to bleed. He staggers out to the hallway, where he sinks to the floor, unconscious.
Joon-hyung is busy working on another of Bok-ju’s wishes — to receive a bouquet of one hundred roses from a boyfriend. He buys a massive bouquet of red roses and calls Bok-ju, who says she’s about to take the bus home. He finds out which bus she’s on, and goes to the station to surprise her.
Uncle Dae-ho has made himself comfortable at the salon where Coach Choi is working, and by the look on her face, he’s driving her bonkers. After work he takes her by the arm and starts planning their evening, but Coach Choi pries her arm away. She starts to say she can’t date him, but Coach Yoon calls her to meet with him and she doesn’t finish her thought.
Coach Yoon says that he’s still talking to the school about getting Coach Choi’s job back, and she asks about Bok-ju’s break. Ha, Dae-ho’s tagged along, and Coach Yoon asks when they got so close. Dae-ho starts to say they’re dating, but Coach Choi interrupts and says they’re drinking buddies. Whoa, ouch. Dae-ho notices how attentive Coach Choi is to Coach Yoon, and that’s a second blow.
On the bus ride home, Bok-ju thinks about how Seon-ok said that she came to love weightlifting, and how much she envies Bok-ju. Bok-ju thinks back to a year ago, when she’d first mastered the clean-and-jerk, and how good she’d felt.
She takes a call from the hospital, and when she finally arrives at the station where Joon-hyung is waiting with his ridiculously huge bouquet, she’s frantic to get to the hospital to see her father. Joon-hyung tries to keep her calm and says that the doctors are probably helping him, and takes her to see him.
Bok-ju is frantic, running from room to room checking the names on the doors, and it’s Joon-hyung who calmly asks a nurse where to find Dad. He leads Bok-ju to the right room, and she runs inside without giving Joon-hyung another thought. He opens the door for the equally panicked Dae-ho, and stands in the hall, looking sadly at the roses.
Thank goodness that despite Bok-ju’s and Dae-ho’s hysterics, Dad looks weak and tired but he says he’s going to be fine. The doctor says he’s not critical, but that it’s time to start thinking about getting him a kidney transplant.
Jae-yi and Dr. Go have dinner with some old school friends, who tease that they should just get married already. Jae-yi says that friends don’t get married, and Dr. Go pouts that she got rejected.
Another pair of classmates joins them, and Jae-yi goes stiff when he sees the woman, Hwan-hee (cameo by Seohyun). When he goes to the restroom later, he comes out to find Hwan-hee waiting for him, and she says nervously that he looks exactly as she remembers.
Hwan-hee suddenly leaves when the man Hwan-hee came with, Sang-gu, joins them. Sang-gu doesn’t say a word to Jae-yi, but he glares at him and gives him a shoulder-check as he passes.
Sang-gu gets mouthy after a few drinks, and when Jae-yi refuses to have any more drinks himself, Sang-gu says he was always nice, and popular with women. He turns to Hwan-hee to ask if Jae-yi is still her type, which makes her look incredibly uncomfortable.
Sang-gu slings an arm around her shoulders and says that he never can tell if Hwan-hee hates him, or just can’t get over Jae-yi. Jae-yi tries to leave but Sang-gu grabs his wrist and says that Hwan-hee will be upset if he goes so soon.
Jae-yi pries Sang-gu’s hand off his arm, and says softly that he’ll regret doing this tomorrow. Sang-gu says he’s just being honest, and asks Hwan-hee if she didn’t come all the way to Seoul to see Jae-yi. She tries to get him to leave, but Sang-gu grabs her roughly. It pushes Jae-yi too far, and he punches Sang-gu’s lights out.
Dr. Go follows Jae-yi out of the restaurant and patches up his hand. She says Jae-yi should have avoided Sang-gu, and wonders what got him so upset that he lost his temper. She asks if Jae-yi still has feelings for Hwan-hee, and sees through his weak lie that he doesn’t.
Dr. Go says that she’s tired of seeing Jae-yi so hung up on his first love, that he still can’t date anyone else. Jae-yi doesn’t respond, and Dr. Go asks if he’ll ever consider her. Jae-yi looks surprised, and Dr. Go says that she hasn’t stayed so close to him for ten years just because of friendship.
Jae-yi is genuinely surprised to hear of Dr. Go’s interest, and she knows that means he’s never once thought about dating her. She says that she’s tired of liking him on her own, and decides it’s time to stop.
Dae-ho decides to stay the night with Dad, and they both urge Bok-ju to go home. She doesn’t want to leave, and decides to head downstairs to get Dad some things he’ll need, like tissues. She steps out of the room, and in the hallway she finds Joon-hyung gone, and a bag with the exact items she was planning on getting for her dad.
She goes home, and sees that Joon-hyung has been here too. He left a sign in front of the restaurant saying that they’re closed for the afternoon, and Bok-ju amends it to say that they’ll be closed for a few days.
She goes to Dad’s room to get him some clothes, and in his drawer she finds a bunch of insurance policies, with Bok-ju as the beneficiary of all of them. She starts to cry, especially when she sees the holes in his clothes, wondering why he spent all his money on the insurance policies instead of on himself.
Bok-ju calls Dad, who’s still awake despite the late hour. She says in a wobbly voice that she’s sorry for everything — for making him worry, and being rude to him. Dad says he’s more sorry, for making her do weightlifting, and for turning their home into a chicken restaurant.
But mostly, Dad says he’s sorry that she grew up without a mother. Bok-ju cries that that’s not his fault, but he apologizes anyway. He wishes Bok-ju goodnight, and hangs up. He and Bok-ju are sobbing, and even Uncle Dae-ho wipes away tears, having heard Dad’s side of the conversation.
A disheveled Coach Yoon arrives at the gym in the morning to find Bok-ju there, mopping the floor. She brightly tells him she’s back for winter training, and he looks thrilled to see her smiling again.
The rest of the team show up for practice, and they’re clearly just as happy to see Bok-ju. Nan-hee grabs onto Bok-ju and wails that she’s been lonely without Bok-ju and Seon-ok. Bok-ju says that Seon-ok probably won’t be back for a while, and they cry together.
Shi-ho isn’t performing well in practice, barely able to stay awake, and her coach warns her that if she doesn’t stop making rookie mistakes, she may not be sent to the next round of competition.
Jae-yi thinks about Dr. Go and how she asked if he’s ever thought of her romantically. Hwan-hee calls him to apologize for Sang-gu’s behavior and says that she’s never apologized to him properly for what happened between them. Jae-yi accepts her apologies, and wishes her well.
That night, Shi-ho takes out her sleeping pills again, and starts to take one. She thinks about her coach’s warning, and takes another. Oh no, that seems like a very bad idea.
Bok-ju calls Dad to tell him that she’s going back to weightlifting. He hollers down the phone that she always does the opposite of what he says, but he can’t hide his big happy grin when he hangs up.
Bok-ju sits in the empty gym, looking around like she did when she decided to leave. But this time she’s reminded of everything she loves about weightlifting, and she’s happy and energized.
She calls Joon-hyung to ask him to meet with her to talk, and he runs to see her. Before she goes, she slips into her dorm room, and puts up her hair in her red bow clip. You go, girl! It’s snowing by the time Joon-hyung finds Bok-ju, and the first thing he asks about is her father. Bok-ju says he’s okay, and thanks Joon-hyung for helping her get to her father at the hospital.
Bok-ju excitedly tells Joon-hyung that she came back to school, and he’s thrilled. She says that when she got back to the school today, he was the first thing she thought of. With a big grin, she says, “Joon-hyung-ah. I’ve decided not to return you. I’ll keep you.” Eep!
Joon-hyung is struck uncharacteristically silent, and Bok-ju adds, “I think I like you, too. No. I like you.” She says that she’s still not sure exactly what her feelings mean, but decides, “Whether as a friend or as a man, I want you by my side.” She adds that she wants him to continue calling her name, and that he can call her Bok-ju or Chubs, and Joon-hyung stops her with a quick kiss.
Bok-ju smiles, then grabs Joon-hyung’s face. Oh, he’s in for it now. She plants a big ol’ kiss on him, then decides she likes it and does it again. She lets go, but Joon-hyung isn’t about to let her back away, and he wraps his arms around her tightly.
Joon-hyung leans down and gives Bok-ju a real kiss, full of promise. She melts into him and hugs him back, and they stand in the falling snow, smiling at each other.
COMMENTS
Well that’s it, I’m toast. I’m actually crying with happiness right now. This show, and this couple, are now officially my favorites of the year, hands-down, maybe even my favorites of all time. They make me feel joy just watching them fall in love. I thought Joon-hyung’s confession was the sweetest thing ever, until Bok-ju confessed right back, and now I’m just a puddle of mush. And those kisses, I just have no words for how wonderful they were. I loved that Bok-ju and Joon-hyung were smiling through it all, just happy and enjoying their moment. I even loved that Bok-ju was wearing her red hairpin, signifying that her feelings for Jae-yi are finished and that now it’s Joon-hyung who makes her feel glad to be a woman.
But this show is about many kinds of love, and I also enjoyed the focus on the love between Bok-ju and her family, small and unusual though they may be. Bok-ju’s father is everything to her, since her mother has been gone a very long time, and we’ve seen over and over how much they love each other. Even when Dad gets angry with Bok-ju, he always has her best interests at heart, and when he makes mistakes he’s not afraid to admit them and apologize, and try to make it right. I loved how he supported Bok-ju’s need to take some time and discover what she really wanted, and this episode really highlighted how Dad sacrifices himself for his daughter’s sake. Those insurance policies really got me in the gut — Dad would rather wear clothes with holes in them, and make sure that his little girl is provided for in case his illness takes him from her.
I just can’t get over how much Joon-hyung is focused on Bok-ju, and how much he seems to revolve around her like her own personal moon whenever they’re together. The way he looks at her, takes care of her, thinks about her before himself is just wonderful. I feel like I’ve said this so many times, but he just keeps upping his game, and he really pulled out all the stops to show Bok-ju that he’s sincere about liking her. I may not love the way he obtained her bucket list, but it was so cute how determined he was to make all those things happen for her. And the way he looked at her during the fireworks, oh my goodness, I’m sure Bok-ju felt like the fireworks were going off in her own heart. How could she not like a boy who obviously adores her so much?
But the real turning point for Bok-ju was when Joon-hyung threw away the list and did exactly what she needed when her father became sick. Ticking down a list is sweet, but supporting her when her whole world feels like it’s crashing down is what real love is made of. It’s easy to be there for someone when things are going well, but how a person behaves during the bad times truly shows who they are. Joon-hyung was willing to step back and let Bok-ju have the space she needed in that time, so that she could focus on her father, and he didn’t get upset that she forgot about him for a little while. Instead, he went that one step further to bring her father some little necessities, even when he was the last thing on Bok-ju’s mind. I thought the moment when he was alone in the hospital hallway, looking at the giant bouquet of roses and realizing that those things don’t signify real commitment, was a huge moment for Joon-hyung. If there were any part of me that worried that Joon-hyung’s feelings for Bok-ju aren’t a true, mature love, they disappeared in that instant.

In all my years of drama watching I've always waited patiently for the subs to be out.
I don't recall refreshing websites crazily for the subs to be out (or for that matter, the recaps).
Except for Bokju. Which is good because I get to appreciate Nam Joo Hyuk's gazes without having to concentrate on the subs.
Like so may other people who are smitten by this drama, certainly this OTP makes us giddy, excited and impatient and lol we ended up camping in the OT thread.
Coming to this episode, I loved how the entire gang got together at the amusement park (heee) and how Joon Hyung tried to sneak time out with Bok Ju alone.
Did you guys notice that little moment the writer gave us, between Seon Ok and Tae Kwon, when he asks her she hasn't gone home yet?
In the previous episode, I think he overheard her when she was talking to her mom in the laundry mom, but was thoughtful to say that he only heard her voice but not what exactly she said, in case she gets embarassed.
When Bokju asks her fluttering heart to stop beating so crazily! ♡ This. When she was so dense to acknowledge all the hints which Joon Hyung was giving to her.
I was watching this on my way to work and was trying so hard to control my tears during that phone call with her aabuji. Had to pause for a moment to dry my eyes.
I love how well this drama potrays the different struggles of people trying to pursue their dreams - Bokju, Shi-ho, Seon Ok, not to forget Joon-hyung (despite his playful demeanour) to name a few.
And that bucket list which kept popping up, was so cute - with Bokju face's on it and Joon Hyung shooting little hearts.
Finally, how cute was the last scene when she dolled up to meet Joon Hyung? And his reaction to her confession. Those eyes.

And somehow out all the sweet memorable scenes in the episode, my favourite one was when JH simply slided open the door for Bok joo at the hospital.

True, that was one memorable scene.
When Bokju was worriedly looking for her dad at the hospital, he goes upto the reception to find out the room number and then searches for the room by himself. Then calls Bokju and slides open the door for her.
He looked like her rock.
I remember Bokju telling him that she started to rely on him more than Seon Ok and Nan hee in the previous episode and this scene couldn't prove it more true.
And then he just stands outside for a moment and then directs Bokju Samchun to the room.
Kudos to the writer, the actors and the director for executing these moments so flawlessly.

I also love the way Nam Joo Hyuk plays Joon Hyung during those scenes. Whenever it gets serious and sad for Bok Joo, Joon Hyung is very gentle with her. It comes so naturally and it always feels genuine and never patronizing. When he greets her at the bus station, he was his usual giddy loud self, but then he quickly softens his voice and calmly does and says what needs to be done to keep BJ from panicking even more. He's shown this kind of TLC for her since episode 2(!!!!), when BJ delivers chicken to him and his friends and he's secretly and genuinely worried that it must be tiring for her to have a part time job while she's training.

Totally agree! I love how he is with her in these moments. And I love that even when he's being physically playful with her, I've never once got an aggressive or (physically) pushy vibe from him, even if his verbal teasing could be too much. Yay for a hero who respects the heroine! <3

So true the scriptwriters and pd are awesome. And Nam joo hyuk nails what is on paper and potrays it with such genuity.
I love he switches from tease you mode, to happy and igddy mode, to serious, gentle caring mode. All in response in tandem with how bokjoo is feeling.
I also commend Lee sung kyung. When she was ready and call him to meet up. Her voice when she began the conversation, dropped to a gentle, soft tone, way more girly then usual.
They really had awesome chemistry and brought out the best in each other. I thk partly cause they are comfortable with each other, not just acting prowess lol

The hospital scene in Weightlifting Kim Bok Joo was my favorite scene too! LollyPip encapsulates very well in her intro exactly how I felt about that scene: "When push comes to shove, caring for someone isn’t about things like flowers and fireworks — it’s about being the support that person needs in the most difficult times."
To add on that, I love how he had originally planned on giving her a bouquet of red flowers, but in the end gave her a plastic bag full of practical essentials she and her family might need at the hospital instead.
It was a great, symbolic way to deliver the message that romance is not what wins a person over but the thought and care you give them when they need it most that does. While the flowers would have made her heart thump, the bag of essentials is what made her heart touched. LOVE THIS COUPLE <3

I love it when he stand outside the room door n waiting, giving them their own family privacy...normally friends who accompany you to hospital would go all the way to the patient's bedside n asked a lot of questions n such. I love it even more when he bought the hospital stay neccesities without being asked to n placed them outside the room (not disturbing them in any way too)....how sweet, gentle n considerable he is.....not many guys would like this kind. And he waited for BJ to call him first , without disturbing BJ caring after her father too....❤???

i do not know if you guys notice it. but while they were fitting a headband to use. while JH said "It's Mine" he was actually looking at Bok Joo and he's smiling while he's saying that. The team make it looks like he' referring to bok joo rather than that headband. The whole team is so awesooooomeee!

You know what else I love about those kisses at the end? He waits for HER to initiate the kisses, then plants a few on her in response, then SHE initiates the first deeper kiss in the snow, and he reciprocates. Just another tiny hint that they're equals. Haaaa, contented sighs over here, a LOT.

I just loved this show to bits. It has earned a very special place in my heart and i'm sure its going to stay there for a very long time.
100% agree to everything you said. Its my first time watching a drama Raw too. God these both kill me, when he looks at her, when she looks at him.
When Bok Joo cries I cry.
I also love how this show pays attention to all its little details. When those offhand Oppa mentions where a turned into a defining point in their relationship(Thanks to Ji Soo), i was mildly surprised at the consistency. But then again Si Hos sensitive sleeping pattern from Ep2(?) which seemed insignificant at that point, are the core of her problem now.
Loved Seon OK and TK love line. He was almost mirroring JH when he jumped to agree for a selfie session as soon as SO mentioned it. That gives me hope for another adorable romance in the making.
Each passing episode and every character makes me fall in love with this show a little more. Omo I can't stop gushing!

I have been gushing about this show to friends and colleagues who do not watch K-dramas and I think the world needs to know about this amazing couple. I was grinning by the end of this episode and have forgotten how many times I have rewatched it. I want to give the Dramabeans reader community who appreciate Joon Hyung and Bok Joo and the people around them as much as I do a giant hug because that's what this show turns me into - a pile of mush who wants to spread happiness and build rainbows.
It might seem like what this show depicts might not happen - but it is so real. I cried during the phone call scene between Bok Joo and her father; it made me Skype with her folks today. And during the fireworks photo session, when Seon Ok made a wry comment about looking at the fireworks with their own eyes and not take pictures? That's what I think most of the time! <3 <3 <3 this show. Dreading its end. Where will I gush? I wish I had a beacon to know who else in London has watched this and create a WBJ fan club.

Oh my oh my oh my - the utter sweetness of this drama and the deft hand of the director to know how to give this love story everything we could possibly want. I don't think I'll EVER recover from the way Joon Hyung looked at Bok Ju during the fireworks. That gaze is pure love. Unbelievable. Perfect. Raw love. Thank you drama gods. You've finally given us an honest, true and completely believable love story. Well done.

Honestly, he's better than any second lead. I usually don't like them because of their clinginess, but he's anything but that. What I love about him is how he doesn't suffocate her. He is there when she needs him, but also doesn't force himself on her and allows her space when she also needs it. He trusts her to be strong and take care of herself as well. Everything he does is in thoughtful consideration to her feelings, not his own. Much better than any "perfect" second lead who are a dime a dozen imo.
This is a drama where I can completely understand why and how the girl falls for the guy since everyone watching is falling at the same time, if not before.

We've got a good amount of show left, and the woman who played JH's mom in flashback is recognizable, so I'm guessing she'll be back. Just in time for Bok Joo to return the what-do-you-need-I'm-your-backup favor.

December 23, 2016 at 3:06 PM
That's probably going to come in the last 4 episodes and Bok Joo will be there for him this time. I'd guess birth mom will be back eventually. He cleared the air with his brother, and now I think he will have to with his parents. To me, it seems unspoken that the parents know that he knows they are the ones buying the gifts, but nobody will say anything. Actually, he might not even need birth mom to get over his trauma, and I really don't want them to make amends after all this time, she doesn't deserve it. I think having a more open and honest relationship with his parents could be the catalyst.

Joon Hyung is NOT the second lead. He's the main lead, not sure how he could be the second lead when all the promos and the posters and the drama is written so that he's the main lead. He is the main lead that was developing as the main female lead was initially crushing on the second lead (like we've seen in other dramas, e.g., You're Beautiful or Boys over Flowers).

You didn't get it. Nobody suggested he is the second lead, of course.
They just said that usually in dramas the first lead is unlikeable and treats the girl badly, and the love comes out of that tension, while the second lead is kind and thoughtful and self-sacrificing, but this niceness doesn't get hiim the girl at the end. Whereas this one, ALTHOUGH he is a first lead, he has those characteristics of being nice, which are usually reserved for the second lead, but still gets the girl, despite being nice.

Ah..... At the amusement park watching the fireworks with friends... Instead of coming across as a cheesy tactic, this age-old action of Joon-hyung holding Bok-ju’s hand by slipping into her pocket is so wonderfully played. I felt a tinge of nervousness just as Bok-ju looked at Joon-hyung for reassurance and slowly, this snowball of happiness overwhelmed me.
Yes Bok-ju, your heart is crazy and there is nothing wrong with it. I am crazy too; crazy to see how madly in love the both of you can be.

First of all, I like that Bok Joo is her own person but Joon Hyung leads this relationship. He's like the root that keeps the relationship in place even if it's swaying, given that Bok Joo tends to be more emotional, Joon Hyung is the one that is more rational. I also like that he was straightforward with her, leaving her no room for second thoughts. Actually if Joon Hyung hadn't mentioned that maybe he was too forward, I wouldn't have thoughts that Bok Joo's personal space was being invaded and that she might be uncomfortable, but since he mentioned it, is it weird for me to like that? Joon Hyung is considerate and he always has Bok Joo's well being in his mind but he doesn't always act on it, wouldn't he be Jae Yi Jr. if that happens. He knows when to stop though, I love when Joon Hyung gave Bok Joo and family the privacy they needed, and thats why it also felt sad that at that moment he's kind of the outsider. I always gets floored by how mature he is despite his childlike behavior.
I find that Dr. Go is unreasonable; I think that Jae Yi stayed true to his nature of being nice to a fault instead of standing for his first love, but I might be wrong. I might be in the minority but honestly I dont want these two to end up together. I feel like they wont be beneficial to each other in a sense of growth as a couple and as individuals. 10 years is a long time, if they hadn't fallen at that time, there would be no falling even if its 20 years or 30 years. Dr. Go needs to move on and step out of Jae Yis shadow.
On the other hand, I was laughing so hard during the amusement ride knowing that Nam Joo Hyuk is so scared of rides in real life, I feel sorry for laughing but I still laughed out loud. I think it was worth it anyway, they were holding hands during the ride ?.
Seon Ok-ah, I always say that Lee Sung Kyung makes me cry when she cries; well Seon Ok can make me cry by talking about her life. I love the subtle references TaeKwon does to acknowledge Seon Ok, that or I'm reading too much into it because I ship then sooo hard. Also, when TaeKwon asked Joon Hyung and Bok Joo why they need private talks, that they're not even dating, I was suddenly hit by the realization that they ARE dating, already, wow, my heart fluttered like a proud mother marrying off her daughter.
Now, I will let my fangirl heart out. I want more kisses. Hahah. Lee Sung Kyung looked like she wanted more.
I cant wait next week, aaaargh, I can't spoil, I must not spoil. Breathe in, breathe out.

Yeah, I don't know what's wrong, maybe because she doesn't help Jae Yi grow. Remember that confrontation with Joon Hyung, Jae Yi asked Dr. Go if he's too nice that he comes off distant and she admits that he is, I'm like, Gurl, you knew all along and you didn't tell him?
I don't mind one couple in this show not hitting it off, we have lots of other ships anyway, Tae Kwon-Seon Ok and Coach-Samchon..

That and I find her uncomfortably manipulative at times. Like how she tries to get in his parent's good graces knowing full well that they see her as a potential daughter-in-law, and how she enthusiastically cheered on Joon Hyung and Bok Joo and seemingly (at least to me, it wasn't exactly clear) only because she didn't like how fond Jae Yi was of Bok Joo. These aren't even necessarily that bad, but it's the way she does them so discreetly all while pretending she only wants to be friends with Jae Yi. She just seems so fake when she's with Jae Yi, I can't stand it.
I'm curious to see how JY and her will play out though. On the hand kdrama logic tells me they will be together no matter what, but on the other hand this drama has already subverted so many cliches and the problems in their relationship feel purposeful in the writing. So I think it could go either way. I'm loving all the other ships, so it's all good even if they do get together. I would add Shi Ho and Ki Seok, although we haven't seen much of him lately presumably because Shi Ho has been ignoring him and I don't think he knew enough to feel worried about her health and safety enough to be more persistent (I think he only thought her problems were being hung up on Joon Hyung and not everything else).

Before this episode I would agree with you guys about not wanting them to end up together, especially since, as you said Peizhi, Dr. Go does come off as fake and kind of manipulative when it comes to Jae-yi. I reaaaallly didn't like her innuendoes during that super uncomfortable dinner (though to be fair, she couldn't know how truly horrible BJ was feeling since she didn't know about her feelings for JY). Still, not adult-worthy behaviour.
But I appreciated how their fight played out in this episode, and how she seemed to come to the realization that she's been waiting in vain for JY to notice her, and that she should woman up and move on from someone who hasn't noticed her feelings (and her extremely broad hints) in ten years.
I also can understand why she might have kept silent, GedSkaiKru even knowing that JY's kindness can be distancing - I feel like her years-long crush has started to tire her since the day they sort-of fought when she met his parents, and it came to a head after the confrontation with the horrible sunbae and first love. I feel like it's a case of his consideration and kindness being (as with BJ) the thing that made her fall in love with him in college, and one of the things that allowed them to stay friends all this time despite her very obvious feelings for him. Especially since I think she's also pretty non-confrontational and they have that in common. But she's realized now that it's also the aspect of his personality that kept them from getting any closer - and I feel like it's so true to life that often what causes us to like someone to begin with causes us to be frustrated with them later. (SO love the writing in this show!)
I'm cool with this being the end of their relationship, but I can also see this writer getting them together in a satisfying way, after giving them both a chance to have some distance and for Dr. Go to regain her sense of self without him. If, after that, JY realizes that he misses having her in his life and pursues her in a decisive way that is different from the way he treats every other person in his life, I could get behind that. I think the true test is if he is able to get mad at her, or on her behalf. Because the only time we've seen him lose control so far is when his first love was being humiliated.
GedSkaiKru
December 23, 2016 at 4:56 PM
@Momo
Coming from that perspective, I kind of understand that she would rather choose neutral and keep things as it is, either because it's the only way to make Jae Yi stay, or because his kindness is the thing that made her fall in love with him.
But, they had 10 years together, by then she would have had figured out that Jae Yi is mature enough to understand where she's coming from, or to phrase things as constructive criticism. I have the opinion that Jae Yi takes Dr. Go's opinion highly, but she didn't let him know just cements my doubt on them being beneficial to each other's growth.
On another note, yes, the writing is golden, the directing and the attention to small details really puts this drama on top of the shelf for it's quality. So I will accept whatever the writer's decision in the end, on whether Jae Yi and Dr. Go ends up, or not, together.

I hope that Shi Ho can gain a real friend to help her through such a dark time. I personally felt it wasn't right when she was going out with Ki Seok. As much as it was boosting her ego, she still didn't have someone she trusted enough to confide in.
Also I wonder if we're gonna get any more scenes of Ki Seok since he's in Goblin as well.
peichi
December 23, 2016 at 9:36 PM
@Satsuki92 - I agree, but I think Ki Seok is really the only person right now and in the foreseeable future that could be a real friend to her. I like the idea of Bok Joo and her being frenemies of sorts, but I can't imagine them ever being close enough to be like that. Perhaps he's a bit too pushy with his feelings, but hard to say given how few scenes of them together there is. Nonetheless he's the only person really concerned with her well-being above just about everything else. Unfortunately while I sympathize with Shi Ho and understand why she can't, it's ultimately on her to trust someone enough to confide in them. From the date they had I got the sense that Ki Seok wants her to confide more in him even if it doesn't mean returning his feelings, I think her refusal to trust him enough to do that was more why he left rather then her rejecting the kiss. He was clearly worried about her, but I don't think he knew enough to understand the gravity of the situation. And no one's really going to be able to understand that unless Shi Ho decides to be honest and tell them. He was absolutely right that she needs to stop torturing herself, and saying that is really about all he could do for her at that point.

I was neutral on Dr. Go and Jae Yi until this episode, but after I really don't want them to be together. When Dr. Go chastised Jae Yi for punching that asshole I felt they really weren't right for each other. I mean that guy is clearly emotionally and physically abusing Hwan Hee, and doing so publicly. He deserved to be punched and I cheered when Jae Yi did it. His reasons for doing so might not have been the purest and maybe there was a better way to handle that situation, but this is Jae Yi we are talking about. He hardly ever shows his true feelings, especially negative ones like anger. Him showing raw emotion like that is a good thing ultimately towards him becoming a better person. Dr. Go criticizing him for doing that by telling him he should have held in his anger and that he knew the guy was a jerk already, was absolutely the wrong thing to say. Yes, he probably is still hung up on his first love, but that doesn't make Jae Yi in the wrong as Dr. Go implies. What a difference between the way Joonhyung supported Bok Joo when she had her first love and Dr. Go towards Jae Yi's lingering feelings for Hwan Hee. I'm sure she was no better when they were in college.

Ohhh, nice, I actually missed that parallelism but nice going. With Joon Hyung's friendship and support Bok Joo was able to get over Jae Yi in a healthy way, whereas, Dr. Go's friendship made Jae Yi bottle his feelings for his first love instead and thus haven't gotten around his closure yet (or so I presume if she is anything near the person she is now).

This show needs more squee so SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! ???
I was already squeeing like crazy when I saw NJH posted the teaser pic of that last scene on his instagram. That look he gave her is just ???? and so magical. I also loved how he slid his hand into hers especially the second time around. Even their hands can act and seem to have really good chemistry.
Squeeing aside, what a moving episode. I was crying along with Bok Joo when she called her dad and I was literally chanting 'hang in there Seon Ok' when she looked dejected after telling her problems to BJ.
I love how this show has a way of making us care for each and every character no matter ho big or small their role is. They can go on with 30 episodes just to highlight each character's conflict and I'd still tune so long I get to watch BJ and JH bicker.
We have 4 more episodes left. Part of me is worried cos it seems that they still have a lot of ground to cover from JH's trauma to SH and SE's conflict and JY and samchoon's love lines (just to name a few). But I have enough trust in the writer to pull things off. Just give us more BJ and JH's lovey dovey scenes is all I'm asking ??
Oh, and I really hope they'll find a donor for dad. Please don't make any of them the donor. It'll be too sad to handle. And one question, did LSK lift actual barbell in this show? I thought it was fake but after having seen it repeatedly it looked real

Me too! I hope the writer won't pull a Na Bong Sun (Oh My Ghostess) and send JH to Canada for a year just for finding his birth mother, I'm worried since the very same writer is in charge of this show. I hope the writer will continue her magic in turning Kdrama tropes upside down.
I was also initually skeptical of LSK using real barbells in this drama, but then I watched BTS footage and found that the barbells looked so Real. If she did use real barbells for this show, my reapect for her just grew even more~

OH MY GOD. I AM DEAD. DOA. THAT IS ME.
HOLY MOLY is Joon-hyung one smoooooth boy.
I thought that he was all talk in terms of being handsome, and a player, but boy has some moves. I would 100% be swept off my feet by him. Where did he learn those moves? Definitely not from Jae-yi...
You are one lucky lady, Bok-joo.
On another note, I am wondering what the story trajectory is now that our two favorite kiddies are together. I want the show to start to address Joon-hyung's trauma more, and for Bok-joo to help him out, since its been Joon-hyung fighting for Bok-joo all this time.
Anyways I am a 10000000% satisfied customer. I want this show to get the ratings it deserves so much!

Is there a way we can tell them about how much we love this show? Can we put a link to this site and the comments threads so they can see that their efforts are not only appreciated but deeply, fanatically loved? Do you think they check their social media accounts, or maybe their managers might and somehow it will get to the actors and support crew? Because they need to know that we love this gem of a series.

We can at least try to make Knetz notice our love and praise for this show and put the comments on Korean portals such as Naver, Pann, etc, so that WFKBJ Production team and Cast can read it. IIRC, there was a time when DB comments were posted on Knetizen portal, where they translate Beanies comments to Korean and post it on the netizen portal, I forgot comments for which drama though.
WFKBJ truly deserved more ratings. It's such a pity that this show is going through what CBA has been through, earlier this year. Only this time,WFKBJ is against LOTBS and CDA was put against DOTS :(

I think it is what it is re: the ratings. On a positive note, I don't think anyone involved in this production expected much else: not the actors, production or the station. I think this was a pretty smart move to give two actors who have worked hard this year a chance to shine as leads (yes, I know the guy has been a lead but not really). I think they've both done well in their previous dramas this year, but am so enjoying seeing them shine. Perhaps the actress will no longer be typecast as the witchy 2nd lead and the actor has proven he can hold his own.

This show has been such a pathbreaker in many ways for me. I am a girl who was little tomboyish before had yearned for somebody to take a note of me in a romantic way. I was also little overweight so had insecurities too like bokju had in this show. This show is so organic and the characters are so real and concept so fresh that I feel complete after watching every episode of this show. I also like the fact that the second lead is not evil as I expected her to be intact I feel sad for her. She is constantly battling depression and what she did to bokju was out of frustration. If one gift I want from santa this year would be that I never want this show to end.

Don't get me wrong, I LIKE the usual way too...(and I didn't HATE Moon Lovers) but I've been waiting for a K-drama to really commit to something like that with a past lives story.
Instead of having everyone end up in the same pairs & patterns, everybody gets it right this time by NOT replaying centuries-old conflicts. And you don't know the villain will always be a villain. LOL

I burst out laughing when I read your comment. I was just telling some kdrama buddies a few days ago that my only very tiny complaint about this show is that no one ever wears the same coat twice! They wear multiple coats in one episide and even on the same day within the show's chronology. It's especially jarring with Bok Joo, whom the show has gone to some pains to show as being strapped for cash.
But it really is a tiny complaint. This show is delightful. I've even come to consider the parade of ever-changing coats as part of its charm.

I notice that too! and they're so pretty, like where can I buy them? I didn't notice as much for Bok Joo, as most of her coats were similar-ish in style or in colour, though you can tell they're not the same ones, but with Joon Hyung though, Nam Joo Hyuk has sported more coats and parkas than clothes I own.
Also another thing that bugged me from earlier on is when Bok Joo was fussing about her clothes being either black or white and I'm like gurl, you've worn more pastels than any character I've ever seen.

Oh my goodness, same here! LOVE the show. LOVE the characters, esp. the leads. LOVE the writer. But dang, the gazillion coats that they wear (and outfits, but more noticeable are the coats because they're more expensive, generally) are, as someone mentioned, distracting and tug at the believability. I try not to notice, but the lack of reality there is ... distracting. Just too glaring. BUY MY BRAND, says the ad. (Not happening any time soon since I live in Hawaii.)
This does not stop me from watching the show, however. I just have to come up with a good reason there are so many coats... like both of them have friends (who we don't know) who work at clothes stores (what a coincidence!) that want them to wear them and then return them after one use. Nah...that's not working. Oh well.

I was literally squueeeeing at the end of this episode. How can 2 people be so adorable and also so perfect for each other? Eeeeeeeee! I'm so glad Bok Joo didn't hem and haw about how to tell Joon Hyung she liked him, too. Being straightforward was the best way, and how amazing is the line, "I decided not to return you. I'll keep you." The look on Joon Hyung's face was adorable. And then, when she got her own face grab kiss moment! Agh! So awesome! I loved that whole sequence - the face grab, the surprised look on his face, and the deep breath she took and the determined look that come over her face before laying those kisses on him. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm usually watching about 3-4 dramas at one time, and I sometimes try to rank them in my head by which one I would watch first if I had new episodes of each in front of me. Right now, hands down, I would pick Weightlifting Fairy over anything. And that's including both Goblin and Legend of the Sea, both of which I am really loving. Believe me, I'm as surprised as you. Gong Yoo is my #1 bias, and Lee Min Ho was my first kdrama crush. But this show is *that* good, and Lee Sung Kyung, Nam Joo Hyuk, and the rest of the cast are just KILLING IT, as are the writer and director, and everyone else in the production crew.
Speaking of the rest of the cast, shout out to uncle Dae Ho, who seemed to realize tonight the major crush coach Choi is harboring for Professor Yoon. Of course he had to run out to the hospital, but I'm hoping he is upfront and asks Coach about it. I love uncle and coach together, but not if she is going to push him away at every turn. That just makes me too sad.

I agree so much with your post. What made this story so good is the fact that there is no angst between the two main characters... or for the most part anyone in this show. Most dramas spend a few episodes dragging the angst before making closure between the main couple. This show is different because they are both so straightforward with each other.
In a way, the closeness between the main couple almost reminds me of the main couple from Reply 1988. They are so relaxed with each other without any outright romance. I found it very enjoyable just to watch the various situations that happened between Bok Joo and Joon Hyung- the writers for this show really took things at just the right pace!

How much do I love this show? The writing (so thoughtful, so real), the characters, adorable Bok-ju...Joon-hyung. He is cheeky & charming, petty & jealous but also mature and caring. (writers how did you do such a great job creating this character!).
The most touching moment for me this episode was how he supported Bok-ju when her father collapsed. Even though his (elaborate & presumably expensive) plans with the flowers fell through, he immediately rallied when he realized what was going on. His ability to calm her, and just figure out practical details for her when she was in a panic. When he slid open the door to let her into her father's room without following...the bag of necessities quietly left behind - that just killed me. This! This is love.
I love Joon-hyung so much (and possibly Nam Joo-hyuk too cos he's doing such an A-mazing job I can't seem to distinguish the two). His eyes. Get me every time.
I've re watched their scenes countless times (more than any other kdrama I've watched, and that's saying something). Not just the kiss or squee-worthy ones but every scene with the two of them together is pure gold. Are these two really in love? Cos they totally sold it.

before this show when Nam joo hyuk was on Running man. he let is slipped hes dating.
Then on Celebrity Bros, Jisoo teased him that he has hidden a girlfriend somewhere and he reacted.
Plus the guy is too handsome and charming to be single. So i do thk hes dating.
And that person might be or might not be Lee Sung Kyung.
Previously there were dating rumours of her and Yoon Kyun Sang from doctors- but he has stepped up to debunk that rumour- that they are good friends. In fact quite a few guys had mentioned LSK is a very cheerful, friendly and sporting person. She hangs out with the guys like one of the guys. So its hard to know

LOL. I remember this Q&A between Ji Soo and NJH in Celeb Bromance.
Ji Soo: "What's the meaning of love?"
NJH: "Marriage."
Ji Soo: " Oh.. So you'd like to get married to your secret girlfriend, eh?"
NJH: "HEY!!"
So yeah, I was laughing so hard at NJH for being so embarassed and he was trying not to get viewers into thinking that he had a secret girlfriend. But his reaction made it looked like what Ji Soo said might've been the truth. IDK whom his secret girlfriendd might be, but if it's LSK, then it'd only prove that our love for JH-BJ in WFKBJ is thanks to their real life counterparts' "Secret" relationship =))

Gahhh, their microreactions! Especially when BJ grabbed JH's face, lol, the look on his face.
I love writing in this show! The characters are so consistent For example, JH's still blurting things he regrets later, like yesterday, when he said she's acting awkward because no guy confessed to her , and BJ is still acting tough when she's emotional or embarrassed.
Also, how many coats do they have?! But ok, I guess I can't expect realism both in relationship, and coats.

Thank You for commenting on the coats! It is pretty glaring. I was like, these kids have some serious money to spend on a wardrobe--and food, entertainment, and travel.
Also love the observation on the characters remaining true to who they are and not changing halfway in asso, so, so many other shows have done to their characters. In JH's case, I love the fact that he is aware of his quips. Those character traits don't change overnight.

Thanks for the recap LollyPip! I found myself laughing by some of the cute moments you recounted, starting with "Joon-hyung has to leave his shorts behind to escape Tae-kwon’s clutches." LOL!
I love this show. I really do. KBJ's storyline is much more well rounded than many other characters in other shows. Nam Joo Hyuk continues to impress me, as does his character Joon Hyung. Poor guy must have spent a fortune on those roses. He did however show that he is not only an amazing friend and considerate human being, but really good boyfriend material. Poor Shi Ho let go of a good thing. Speaking of Shi Ho, she develops into that character "necessary" to advance the plot line, although I really have a hard time trying to sympathise.
For all the good that was in this episode, I have to say that I really could not handle KBJ's crying. It was like nails on a chalkboard. I had to mute those parts in the re-watch.

Awww, the feels, I love love love this show ❤️ and need to get off my chest all these feelings. My thoughts after watching this episode:
- Never imagined that a guy slipping his hand in your pocket could be such a heart-stopping move, but boy, Joong Hyun knows how to make a girl nervous.
- Nam Joo Hyuk's feelings trespassed the screen, he is outshining everyone and everything else in this episode. Either he is an awesome actor or he is in love or he has a thing for Sung Kyung (who wouldn't? I am a woman and I love her, and she is sooo pretty). Where is this magic coming from?
- That kiss...it was so beautifully shot. The editing was wonderful. I loved the moment before Bok Ju's started her confession, when the camera dwelled for a second on the sight of Joong Hyung...that was more effective than making us hear Bok Ju's thoughts. And the kiss was so sweet. I loved how she hugged him, no deer stares and sudden paralysis, just happiness and hearts in their eyes ?? I joined their festival of happiness from home :) Their chemistry is so good that I am starting to ship them in real life...I would be a happy fan if they decide to date, haha!!
I'm glad that this is not the typical drama that ends with the kiss and the couple getting together. There is so much fun (and romance) in the dating phase that can be explored, and I trust the WF team in doing this well. :D

Mmmm, not sure what to think of this, haha!... I already saw some sparks of talent in NJH while watching Scarlet Heart (apart from noticing how handsome he is), I think he did what he could with the character there. And he has been consistent with his acting not only in scenes with SK. Like, when he confessed about his trauma to the psychologist, it felt so real, his eyes said everything. Maybe the guy is improving a lot, and maybe he is already dating and he is able to reproduce these feelings in front of the camera...
But, yeah, the feelings they are giving us are so strong that one can't help but hope that they become a real couple and that all this cuteness keeps going not only in front of the cameras, hee! :D

I am too, and generally agree with your observation. But the one thing I really don't like about the viki subs is that they translated "chubs" as "fatty". That comes across as really mean and degrading and makes it seem as though JH is really bullying BJ, when that's not really his intention. Plus, I don't have to add how body-shaming it is to call someone "fatty" all the time, so I'm not sure why that particular translation choice was made, tbh.

After recently discovering Nam Joo Hyuk/ Jisoo's celebrity bromance episodes, especially the scene with them at the amusement park, this scene in WFKBJ is even funnier. I loved catching a glimpse of BJ and JH holding hands on that second (seriously crazy scary) ride - although I'm guessing that was actually the actors and not the characters. :)

Joon Hyung, you may go down in history as the ultimate dreamboat! The sequence when Bok Jo's dad got sick and Joon Hyung just got down to business by being on guard outside the hospital room, leaving the bag of necessities and then putting up the sign at the chicken shop, etc. Awesome. What a guy. It reminded me of when my stepfather was trying to date my mom and part of that conquest even included things like stripping the old wax off my grandparents' kitchen floor ? Just getting things done was the way to my mom's heart, too. And btw, my stepdad was an ultimate dreamboat and totally deserved the girl as well ❤ and made her as happy as could be. You GO, Bok Joo!

I am curious to know if this show is offending or bothersome to gymnasts?
They have shown their working routine to be very tough, moreover the coach does seem to be harsh. I feel like its giving an over all impression that gymnastics is a tough sport, which is also somewhat discouraging? The way we see weightlifting through BJ is totally different from how we see gymnastic through SSH.

As a former rhythmic gymnast, I think this is a pretty accurate depiction the style of coaching I saw. You definitely get "attacked" for messing up your routine, and especially in competitions, people can be a bit jealous? back-stabby? Coaches totally can ignore the signs of depression or injury if they are focused on getting you to perfect a routine.
I think the weight obsession of the coach is strange. I never experienced that sort of weigh-in's at all. When you reach a certain level of fitness in gymnastics you don't really need to worry about weight gain (with a healthy diet of course) since you are exercising so much anyway that your weight should not fluctuate. It's not like you get point deductions on competitions for weighting a certain amount, and since no one is picking you up (like ballerina's), you shouldn't have to worry about your weight.
Also the amount they practice their routines seems a bit dangerous. A lot of rhythmic gymnastics is stretching your body. We used to stretch for about an hour and a half to two hours to get our bodies in peak condition, but they seem to constantly just practice their routines, which is a recipe for injury (*cough* *cough* Shi-ho). This is a bit more finicky, since no one, but an actual rhythmic gymnast would notice, but I just wanted to mention it.
This is my take on your question, based off of my personal experience. Hope it helps!

Also, sorry to write so much. Many different sports have different "vibes" which attract different people. I think sports gymnastics is probably quite different from rhythmic gymnastics.
Rhythmic gymnast tend to be more tense/have 0 chill, which is honestly quite negative. There are definitely training centers that can be different, but that style of coaching is the majority of rhythmic gymnast coaches.
I loved gymnastics, but my coach did not care about me at all unless I did well on competitions, which is really not cool. I now play ultimate frisbee, and that sport is amazing and attracts a lot of really weird people (most of whom work in tech), which works well for me.
Just mentioning this to point out the differences between communities in sports!

I just love these two and this show so much. So much that I am willing to endure incomplete subs cause I am that impatient.
--I loved Bok Ju during her confession, saying at first "I think I like you" then making sure she was clear and stating, "No, I definitely like you." And she backed this up with kisses, by wearing her bow clip and wearing a fantastic mint coat (dunno, I just love that coat).
--Thank you to the writers for showing that BJ's bucket list was not a cheat code to winning her heart. I think way too many things in popular culture (especially in my country) have incepted this idea that it's okay to sneakily gain the upper hand on the object of your affection and it's not. So yay for a male protagonist who quickly learns this and continues to gaze at BJ in that way that he does.
--And I love the depictions of family and personal sacrifice to reach your dreams. I did not doubt that BJ was unaware of how much her dad has done for her--and this is so true for so many of us especially if you are the child of immigrants--but to see it in the money socked away in insurance policies and in threadbare clothes was so touching. This scene spoke so much. And Seon-Ok acknowledging that she does not have talent but wishes she at least had family support? Tears leaking out my eyes.
--But one moment of side-eye: how is that doctor saying "it's not critical but you needed a kidney transplant you know, yesterday."

Yeah, that was a cute confession from Bok Ju. It was like she started careful, but then realized that she had to be sincere with Joong Hyun and show her heart. I love this couple, writer, director and the entire production team. The fireworks scene when he slipped his hand inside BJ's pocket, abuji and BJ's talk, JH being the sweetest boyfriend ever to exist in dramaland and the kisses...squee-fest. The way BJ took a deep breath before kissing JH was so ackward and yet so cute. JH's surprised reaction was pure gold.
I really like that the writer has not completely forgotten about the second leads and they each have their own conflicts to overcome. Shi-ho needs to take a break from training and get some counselling.
While I am not a fan of using friendship as a crutch for over 10 years when you clearly want something more, I feel like Dr Go always liked JY(as more than a friend) and it is much harder to point out flaws in your crush than a regular friend. BJ and JH were friends first before developing feelings for each other. She was probably waiting for him to get over Hwanhee and hoping for the right time to have the conversation. Bring it up too soon, she risked being friendzoned and too late, she wasted time and still got friendzoned. Jeez, they could have had the "Are we just friends?" conversation a long time ago and she could have moved on by now. To be fair, JY always brushed her off subtly when she talked about a relationship between them. I wish she had taken the hint knowing that he is not really the straight forward type and realized he was just not that into her. Okay, I will stop here for now and see how the writer decides to develop their story.

I love that I kept watching this drama...at first I was expecting a typical storyline where girl meets boy and boom bang shenanigans incur. Tbh the fact that it took a while before the two leads met defied my expectations and almost made me wanna turn away.
Soooo glad I didn't bc in retrospect I LOVE and appreciate that the writers set it up the way they did because it seems realistic. I legit feel like Kim Bok Joo's college bff that's low key
jelly and living vicariously and high key so happy that she's finally experiencing these things and feelings.
I love that when JH realized his real feelings for BJ he didn't question or deny them, he accepted them and acted on them. He reflected on his behavior and realized that he really did like her--no rhyme or reason just liked her. His trying to viscously get out of the friendzome was admirable. I loved the fact that at first he was trying to fulfill her list and she was not about it at all. But when he acted on his feelings--taking pics of her and putting his hand into her pocket--he got her "heart to flutter"( Me too boo, dang).Loved the simplicity in his realization and confession. Same with her--when she told him she liked him too...I loved that they didn't give us the typical flashback showing us the exact moments "when she realized she liked him." She simply thanked him for being there for here, but it was separate from her confession. She told him he was the first person she thought of and wanted to tell she was back...That was a simple and powerful statement/confession. They are different, but when it comes to acting on their feelings, they are very much alike and compatible.
I get that Shi Ho is acting as a foil to Bok Joo ?, but I find myself wishing her screen time could be replaced with more cute JH/BJ time tbh...I would also like for JH's story line to be addressed (since they brought it up) and to see how BJ can be there for him and to give the character another dimension...but as you mentioned before: the way that the actor is portraying his character is so powerful that we sort of get a multifaceted view of JH without actually seeing it. His character is brought to life in an interesting way that doesn't seem so flat but I think exploring his story would add an interesting layer to the story.
I love how he can go from playful to gentle and mature for BJ...and that kiss *swoon* he's def out of the chingu zone and not going back. I'm just obsessed with this couple

I just love that what probably really won BJ over, and what was actually the sweetest thing Joon-hyung did this episode, was buying those basic necessities for her dad. Such a sweet gesture, and worth a million times more than a couple dozen roses.
What I really love about Joon-hyung is that he's not perfect, despite being the perfect boyfriend and friend to her, though. He was a bit bratty and tried too hard with going down her bucket list, but in reality, when the going gets tough and she really needs him he's there for her. I just love it. I say love too much, but that's the only way I can describe this feeling I have for these characters, this couple and this show. This couple has seriously moved up to being one of my all time favorites. I can't count the number of times I rewatched the end kiss!
Now I worry if dad will get the kidney transplant. Are they setting up for someone to donate a kidney to him? It's not that difficult do a living transplant after all.
And I have such a crush on NJH. I was one of the few who liked him in School, but he's seriously blowing much mind how well he's doing. I'm not ready to say goodbye him this drama, but I can't wait to see how both he and LSK do in the future.

I've rewatched parts of episodes 11 and 12 so much (especially JH/BJ's "dates" and respective confessions) that I've lost count of how many times and feel like a total crazy person for getting butterflies every. single. time. But they're just SO ADORABLE I can't stand it. It's hilarious and fun and reassuring to come to DB and see from the comments that I'm far from the only person who's spent the last two days just watching the cute on repeat.

Ditto to liking Nam Joo-hyuk. I am finding myself constantly repeating scenes not because they're cute but because I want to catch all the nuance in Nam Joo-hyuk's facial expressions and body language. He pays so much detailed attention to how his body looks and reacts but without ever making it seem painstaking. Instead, it seem so effortless and natural that I almost forget he probably put a lot of effort into cultivating that performance.

This show is alike to SKL. Warm, fuzzy and an easy/delightful watch to destress our busy n stressful lives away (no REAL n clever villains). Also alike to Louis of SKL, JH is the next best BF in kdramaland.

I wholeheartedly agree! Both WFKBJ and SKL have same feel-good vibes. Watching WFKBJ totally healed my weekday stress, just like when I watched SKL. Afterall,I watch romcoms to be happy and giddy , not to be stressful with all the melos and makjang that are often added in many mainstream Kdrama romcoms. Also, watching WFKBJ sort of healed my SKL withdrawal too LoL.
And yes, JH and Louie are totally dramaland's best boyfriend material. They proved that a male lead doesn't always have to be intimidating/stoic/rude. I'm starting to hope that JH and Louie will start a new Kdrama trend with more loveable, happy-go-lucky, considerate male lead characters.
Also, come to think of it, NJH's detailed attention and nuances to his portrayal in WFKBJ sort of reminded me of SIG's famous mannerisms and details that he often put in his drama characters. I bet if NJH keeps showing us this kind of acting, I wouldn't be surprised if he will be known as one of talented leading male actor that will fill in dramaland, during the absence of 87-89ers actors.

I DO TOO! It's just the little things he does. One scene I can think of is that awkward double date dinner with his bro and BJ. That disgusted face he made when his bro and the doctor were being too cutesy looking at the menu. It's so natural, and just flashes by quickly, but it was so cute. I had to go back and watch that scene a couple times (even if the lady doctor was bugging me lol). He's totally owning this role.
He really needs to always play characters like this. He really does this them.
