The Lonely Shining Goblin: Episode 9
by HeadsNo2
Our goblin gets a much-needed wakeup call when his lack of honesty nets results he clearly wasn’t ready for, and though he still might not understand the why of it enough to change how he shares his information, it’s forward movement nonetheless. And while Goblin loves to wallow, we at least get from one side of the emotional spectrum to the other in one episode, which delivers quite literally on the phrase “something for everyone.”
Note: Since javabeans and girlfriday are up to their eyeballs in awards ceremony coverage, gummimochi and I will be filling in this week. You’ll get them back, we promise!
EPISODE 9 RECAP
Haltingly, Eun-tak asks Reaper if it’s true that Shin will disappear if she pulls out the sword, and Reaper gravely confirms that that’s the fate of the goblin’s bride.
“If you pull out that sword,” Reaper says, “He will become dust and wind and scatter. He’ll disappear from this world or perhaps go into another world, forever.” In his usual dry way, he comforts her by telling her that it’s not her fault, while solemnly insisting upon his own innocence in keeping her in the dark. That, he claims, was Shin’s doing, and all he did was give her the answer she sought.
And, he adds that he’s on her side even now, which Eun-tak thanks him for even through her tears. She sobs as she tries to pack her things in her room, crying that this place wasn’t her home after all. “It seems I won’t have a place to call home in this lifetime,” she cries, before gathering Mr. Buckwheat and the rest of her things to go.
After telling Shin of Eun-tak’s fate to constantly face death if she doesn’t pull out the sword, Samshin Grandma leaves the bookstore, encountering Deok-hwa outside. She asks him if he wants to have a drink because she’s so upset, and he agrees—but only if she’s buying, since he still doesn’t have a credit card.
While Shin contemplates asking heaven for one hundred years to confess his love to Eun-tak, Eun-tak remembers the kind words Shin had said to her right before he thought he’d disappear, now recognizing them for what they were: words of farewell.
We see the note she left on her door announcing her departure from the house before cutting back to Eun-tak. It starts to rain, and Eun-tak looks up to the sky and cries. In voiceover, Reaper narrates that on that day, Eun-tak is said to have walked through a “certain someone’s” tears for a long while.
Shin storms out of Eun-tak’s empty room, worrying that she’s run away. Reaper tries to tell him what happened, but Shin’s out before he can, using the front door as an interdimensional portal to check all the places where he thought she’d be.
Unable to find her, Shin asks the ghosts that regularly haunt Eun-tak for help, but none of them have seen her. Shin finally asks Reaper to tell him where Eun-tak works part-time, and Reaper hands over a coupon for the chicken shop, as though he were waiting for this question.
Turns out, he was, since he confesses to telling Eun-tak the truth about the sword. When Shin demands to know why, Reaper says it’s because he’s on her side, and explains simply, “I don’t want you to die.” He’s quick to deadpan that those words don’t hold any special meaning—it’s only that he’d be bored if Shin were to die. Suuure.
“You can get mad at me if you want,” Reaper ventures, but Shin blusters that he can’t very well get mad at him now that he’s switched from telling him to die to now wanting him not to die. He storms out in a huff, and Reaper belatedly realizes that they’re actual friends now. Aw.
Shin goes to the chicken shop only to find a sign that they’re hiring part-timers, but as he leaves, he passes Sunny. He sees her future, where she tells Reaper never to contact her again, and in the present, they both stop once they reach a certain distance.
Sunny turns around, looks straight at him, and says, “Oraboni?” Recognizing ye olde term as one his sister would have used with him, Shin looks at her curiously. But the archaic word just seems to be part of Sunny’s normal repertoire. She only addressed him because she thought he was looking for a part-time job, ha.
When he says he was looking for a part-timer who worked at the shop, Sunny suspiciously wonders why someone wearing the expensive clothes he’s in would need anything from a mere part-timer. Is he, perhaps, the one who made her cry?
“She was crying?” Shin asks, which only confirms Sunny’s suspicions. She launches into a tirade against him, demanding to know if he sent Eun-tak away because he was married or something. “We’re not yet wed, but I do have a bride, so I guess you could say that,” Shin replies. Gah, now is not the time to be obtuse!
At home, Reaper asks if Shin has found Eun-tak yet, to which Shin strangely replies that Reaper should get his paperwork in order when it comes to her, that way she’ll no longer be a missing soul. Reaper says Shin may as well just wish for her death, but there’s a logic to his request: Unless she becomes official with an official date of death that they can see, then neither of them can save her.
Reaper refuses to believe that Eun-tak could die anytime soon, since he personally vows to not to take her life. Shin just sighs that there must be greater forces at work, wondering how it is that a goblin and grim reaper can’t even save one girl.
At least this gives Reaper the impetus to file the paperwork at Subway, and he puts the hustle on his hoobae to get it done asap. When his hoobae questions the circumstances regarding Eun-tak as the goblin’s bride, Reaper uses his powers of persuasion to basically tell his hoobae to shut up and eat his sandwich. (They’ve already paid for it with their souls.)
Shin finds Eun-tak’s classmate looking for her at her old house, since the college entrance exam results came out and Eun-tak hasn’t been at school to receive them. He takes the results from the girl before shoving them back into her face to ask for her interpretation of them, and she says that Eun-tak’s scores are good enough to get her into any college she wants.
While contemplating her test results at home, Shin seems to come to a decision, as he tells Reaper to gift his fellow reapers with the socks he bought from that street vendor to prevent the bus crash—hah, is this his way of bribing them?
The weather gets strange as Shin contemplates what Samshin Grandma said to him. As he stares at the blood moon from atop a skyscraper, he thinks that if he does make the decision to return to nothingness, then god had better have a good excuse for forcing his hand.
Even stranger things start happening in Reaper Land, as Hoobae Reaper goes to collect a soul, only for the dead man to rise back up again after his death card bursts into flames. Reaper decides that now is a good time to give his hoobae the socks, figuring they were an apology from the goblin for causing whatever cosmic mess his angst has gotten them all into.
Reaper gives Shin an earful when he gets home, telling Shin that while he understands how he feels, it’s not an excuse for him to wreak havoc on human life. Shin merely replies that he just wanted to see someone—it would have been fine if that someone were god, but even better if it were Eun-tak. Poor Reaper regrets the day he told Eun-tak the truth.
Grandpa tries explaining the existence of otherworldly creatures to his secretary, who seems to have caught onto the fact that Shin never ages. Cryptically, Grandpa says that it was Shin who chose the secretary, and that it was Shin who was the secretary’s patron all these years, willing the secretary to connect the dots.
Deok-hwa knows that Uncle Shin was behind the bizarre weather events, and offers to help him by finding Eun-tak using more conventional methods. We then see the god-butterfly fluttering around an expansive ski slope, eventually landing on top of a lodge.
That’s the lodge where we find Eun-tak working, which seems a strange place for a girl with no money or connections to find, but let’s roll with it. She reads about the strange weather in Seoul without changing her expression, just as we hear Deok-hwa say in voiceover that he’s found her.
She thinks back to how Shin had evaded telling her the truth about his sword, and how he’d said that it was only to make him “pretty.” Calling him a crazy bastard in the present, she remembers smiling at him in the past when she’d told him she’d remove the sword on the first snow. Now that she’s surrounded by snow, she comments that there’s too much of it.
She turns around to find Shin standing there looking at her, and he says simply, “Let’s go home.” She replies that she doesn’t have a home, claiming that they only kept her around because they needed her—and his crime is worst of all, because he only kept her around because he wanted to die.
“I heard that I’m just a tool to be used to end the goblin’s immortality,” she adds, and Shin can only level her with a sympathetic look as he admits that he lost his chance to tell her. But, he says that losing that chance made him happy, and if he could have, he planned to make it so that he’d lose every chance to tell her until the moment he died.
“But I wasn’t supposed to do that,” he adds. “The blood of thousands that stained this blade, and the sheer weight of a single life… I wasn’t meant to decide their fate. So remove this blade, I beg you.”
Eun-tak barely takes a second to think before replying that she’d rather die, adding that she wants them to be like strangers from now on. “Go far, far away from me and live a long life, Kim Shin-sshi,” she says, using as distantly formal a moniker as she ever has with him. “Don’t ever appear before me again. If you do, I’ll really kill you.”
Shin keeps an eye on her at work, and takes to following her wherever she goes in the ensuing days. One day she walks ahead of him for a long while without turning back to acknowledge him, and when she finally turns around, there’s no one.
But when she turns back to her original path, Shin’s standing in front of her. He hands her her test scores and meekly says that she did well on her exams, which she calls an excuse. He knows it’s a pathetic one, but he’s happy it gave him the opportunity to see her, even so.
“Do you want to live together, or die together?” Eun-tak asks, on the verge of tears. She reminds him that she said she’d kill him if he ever appeared before her again, and now tells him to come closer so she can pull the blade out.
He obliges, which only makes Eun-tak angrier. He even goes so far as to put her hand on the blade, but at the real threat of it, Eun-tak begs him not to do it. Growing frightened, she starts pounding on his chest for him to let her hand go, and he slowly drops it as she sobs.
She blames him for having a hidden agenda from the moment he told her he loved her, which now prompts her to ask if he even loves her. “No? Not at all?” she asks, clearly hopeful that he’ll say yes.
But instead, he replies, “I’m scared. I’m so scared. I would like it if you told me that you still needed me. I’d like it if you told me to go as far as to do ‘that.'” (By “that,” does he mean love?) He gets choked up himself as he says that he’d like it even more if she would accept those excuses from him, so that he could use that as an excuse to keep living with her.
Eun-tak stills in her crying as the two of them look deep into each other’s eyes, saying nothing. It’s night when we next see Eun-tak glancing outside the window of her small apartment, and she sees Shin waiting faithfully across the street.
At work, Eun-tak takes a bit of a breather, unaware that snow’s coming in through the roof. The falling snow causes a domino effect of falling shelves, and she ends up knocked unconscious in an empty warehouse.
Shin goes back home, and when Reaper comes to find him, he says that Eun-tak doesn’t want to come home. But Reaper’s got bigger issues: Though her paperwork hasn’t been completed, he just received her death card, which is blank to Shin’s eyes but has a time and date that Reaper can see.
“It’s as if someone is out to kill her,” Reaper remarks worriedly, “but it isn’t me, and most certainly isn’t you.” Defeated, Shin says it is him, since he was told that their fate is that he has to die in order for her to live—if he lives, she’ll die. “This was the true nature of the punishment I received. This was all part of god’s bigger plan.”
Reaper tells him to quit with the cowardly talk, saying that though it may be god’s will, it isn’t his, and he knows it’s not Shin’s either. Reaper orders him to get to Eun-tak before she dies within the hour. Shin returns to the ski lodge to search for her as Samshin Grandma’s words about Eun-tak’s fate keep ringing through his ears.
Eun-tak stirs from her spot on the floor, her memories with Shin flashing through her mind. Tears leak out of her closed eyelids as she remembers their most recent, charged meeting in the snow, and she weakly says, “I need you. I love you.”
The lights on the ski slope abruptly turn off right at that moment, and Shin is able to find Eun-tak. He throws his coat over her, and heroically carries her outside.
She wakes in a hospital surrounded by all of its doctors, who quickly explain that she’s all right now, but wouldn’t have been if she had stayed there any longer. They also tell her that she’s been there a day and a half, and her first worry is what the bill will look like.
The head doctor tells her not to worry about that, probably because it was the chairman of the group that controls their hospital—Shin, of course—who brought her in. She asks the group if anyone has a match or lighter to lend her with an awkward smile, since it’s a pretty odd request.
Next we see her, she’s riding a gondola lift above the ski slope, and she uses the opportunity to blow out one of the matches she’d been given. But, strangely, Shin doesn’t appear. Eun-tak can’t hide her disappointment, at least until she looks up and sees what she’s been looking for.
She smiles when she sees Shin where the lift cars disembark, and he’s there to offer his hand to her as soon as the doors open. Instead of taking it, she disembarks and hits him halfheartedly, angry because she was worried he wouldn’t appear when summoned anymore.
After giving her a once-over, Shin explains that he waited for her, but she obstinately replies that he’s supposed to appear whenever she blows out a match. His response is cute: He wanted to get ahead of her so he could help her out of the car, leaving Eun-tak without another argument to give.
She stomps off, but soon finds Shin’s arms wrapped around her from behind as he pulls her close. “Me too,” he says, seemingly apropos of nothing. When she asks what he means, Shin dismisses it, but she already knows what he means. Ohhh.
Back to her cheery self, Eun-tak confesses that she can’t see his sword anymore, so there’s no chance she’ll be able to pull it out for him. Aw, is she lying? Shin pats her head affectionately, and she smiles in turn. Cue sweeping, long shots of the ski slope that this drama’s really intent on selling us.
Sunny pays a visit to her shaman to ask about the dark handsome man in her life, but dismisses the shaman’s crazy-sounding claims that the man is a grim reaper. Instead, she asks about someone else she knows about, whom she describes as looking “slightly like a dinosaur.” The shaman’s guess: “Gong Yoo?” HAH.
The shaman catches Sunny’s attention before she can go by asking if she received something shiny from someone. Sunny asks her what she means, but the shaman only says that she should throw the object away—it could be carrying the sins and grudges of its former owner.
Sunny holds the item in question, the jade ring, as she wonders what secrets it holds. Reaper materializes at her table just then, but since he’s wearing his hat, she can’t see or hear him. He can only apologize to her as she voices her complaints about him, but panics when she tries to text him, since he knows she’s able to hear the noise coming from his phone even when she can’t see him.
He tries to unlock his phone, but in his hurried attempts, he ends up enabling its security lock. He’s stuck trying to defend himself to someone who can’t listen, as he explains that the reason he hasn’t called is because he feels bad about erasing her memories the last time they met.
Reaper thinks back to unfolding the scroll and the way he reacted to it, so in the present, he also admits, “It’s because I may be cheating on you. I’m sorry.” Hahahaha. He tries explaining further, but he receives her “I miss you” text just then, and the sound freaks Sunny out.
“Me too,” he replies verbally, as Sunny tries singing a gospel hymn to expel the spirit she thinks must be haunting her. Reaper gets a huge kick out of it.
Shin gets upset that Eun-tak isn’t coming home with him right away, but she says that with the holiday season, the pay’s too good to leave. When she says that she can come back home when the snow melts in February, Shin flails as he calls Grandpa to have her fired—if he doesn’t do it quick enough, Shin vows to use his fiery powers to melt all the snow on the slope, ha.
Cut to: Shin and Eun-tak returning to their home with all her things, including the all-important Mr. Buckwheat. Upon seeing Reaper, Eun-tak asks if he was very worried, to which he replies: “Just a little. [Shin] was the one who worried a lot.” He adds that Deok-hwa actually found her, while Shin adds that he was the one who brought her back.
Looking around the house, Eun-tak gets a little emotional as she says that this is the first time she’s ever had a place to come back to—now, this place really feels like home.
Before Shin can unbutton his coat, Reaper ominously tells him to keep it on, since he’ll have to come with him. Eun-tak jumps between them to demand to know where Reaper plans on taking “our ajusshi,” and Shin gets the biggest, silliest grin as he realizes he’s part of an “us” now. Reaper snaps that he can hear Shin’s thoughts, and then tells Eun-tak just so Shin can be more embarrassed.
When Reaper finally drags Shin off to his domain to write an explanatory letter of recent events, he clarifies that the letter isn’t going directly to god, who’s much too busy to handle affairs like this. He wants Shin’s help in filling out all the paperwork, since he caused all the recent anomalies. Since Shin doesn’t want to do it, he teases Reaper about his maybe-telling Sunny about Reaper’s true nature. Fair’s fair, after all.
During the midst of Reaper freaking out over this, someone comes in… needing to use the bathroom? Both of them are completely dumbfounded as to how a human—a living one, at that—could enter somewhere humans aren’t supposed to go.
Hilariously, Shin chalks it up to the strength of human will to change destiny (hint, hint), and teases Reaper for believing in a god he can’t even see when he can’t believe the human he literally just saw. Of course, all Reaper can think of is the paperwork nightmare this is going to cause.
Sunny interviews possible part-timers without any success, but when Eun-tak walks through her door as an applicant, she goes silent with emotion. Eun-tak tears up too as she promises to do everything she says, and Sunny happily hires her on the spot, in exactly the same way she did the first time. Aww.
Eun-tak notices the upgrade (Sunny’s moved her shop to a nicer location), and Sunny wonders how Eun-tak knew where to find her. Eun-tak can’t tell her that ghosts told her, so she only says that she has her ways.
While taking out the garbage that night, Eun-tak chases off a couple of older kids from bullying a little boy, but the little boy walks off afterward without a word. The next day, she nervously checks the status of her college application, and cries to see that she’s been accepted.
She goes from tearing up to laughing and rolling around her bedroom in happiness, only to find out that her tuition’s already been paid by a mysterious benefactor. Well, not so mysterious—he told the woman in admissions to tell Eun-tak his name when she called, haha.
Even knowing that, he’s all, “Ohhh darn, I asked them to keep it a secret,” when she confronts him over it, and he offers her the purse and perfume he’d taken back from her. She accepts it with glee, and reaches inside for that coveted five million won…
But it’s not there, since Shin says he used it to pay for her tuition. Hah. He tells her not to feel too touched since it’s only a loan, and through teary eyes, Eun-tak replies, “You gave it to me before, so why are you merely lending it to me now? How could a person’s feelings change like that?” Shin: “The only ‘person’ living in this house is you.” Lol.
He tells her that she can pay him back in installments over eighty years (aww, I see what he’s doing), refusing to take any faster method of payment (double aww). Eun-tak is delighted that he’s made up his mind for their future, and goes into aegyo-mode as she suggests they go on a date.
Once they’re out, she jokes that if he would’ve brought her the purse instead of her exam results on the slope, she would’ve followed him right there and then, no questions asked.
Holding up the purse, Eun-tak asks if his love is also inside it, and he tells her to look inside—he put it in there somewhere. Aw.
Grandpa’s secretary presents him with a list of gifts that female high school students like, and Grandpa eyes it warily: “Bangtan Boys? What do these boys do, exactly?” His secretary fails at imitating BTS’s “Boy in Luv” dance number (official BTS fan right here), so Grandpa asks about the other thing on the list: “EXO? Is that a liquor?” At least Grandpa gets a good laugh out of his secretary’s attempts to dance and sing.
Grandpa finally settles on a digital camera, which, thankfully, his secretary doesn’t need to mime out for him. Deok-hwa enjoys Eun-tak’s gift for her before giving it over, explaining that it’s from his grandpa (but the selfies are from him, ha).
In the most spoiled way possible, Deok-hwa says that he’s only ever gotten buildings as presents, so she must be sooo happy over a camera. But really, he just wants to keep using it, so the two adorably fight over it while ajusshis Reaper and Shin look on.
When Shin asks if Reaper’s received any more death cards for Eun-tak, he brings up the human in the teahouse as well, wondering if there could be a variable just like that in god’s plan, as well. He vows to find the door he needs to open to create a variable in god’s plan for him.
“I don’t know if it will take one hundred years or ten months, but I am going to try and make the decision that keeps me by her side,” Shin proclaims. “Who knows what door I’ll end up opening by doing that, though?” he muses, only for Reaper to deadpan: “As long as it’s not my bedroom door.”
Deok-hwa uses his camera to take photos of Shin, Eun-tak, and Reaper together, which is adorable, but it also brings out a conditioned response in me—only bad things happen after photos are taken!
In voiceover, we hear Reaper ask Eun-tak about what he can use to impress Sunny, and Eun-tak lists off all the things girls like for guys to do. But of course, he takes her advice about herding Sunny toward the inside of the sidewalk (where it’s safer) too literally, and ends up just awkwardly blocking Sunny’s way.
He explains that he just wants her to walk where it’s safe, offering an honestly creepy semi-smile, which he got from Eun-tak telling him to smile when talking to her. Off-put but not freaked out, Sunny asks him to tell her what he said he had to tell her, which is just Reaper’s answer to the religion question: “My religion is that I have no religion.” Cue another weird smile, ha.
Sunny catches onto his sudden smiling habit and asks about it, only because she’s worried it has something to do with her. Genuinely perplexed, Reaper fishes for her to compliment him on being “cute” again, but the reference is lost on her. She admits that she would’ve thought he was cute if he met her on Christmas like she wanted to, but he has an answer for that too: “Isn’t Christmas a bit strange? I mean, it’s someone’s birthday, after all. Isn’t celebrating it like that selfish of people to do?” LOL.
Reminding her that he’s an atheist, he desperately tries to get her to tell him he’s cute, and that gives her a sense of deja vu she can’t shake (since he erased her memory of doing so before).
Shin drops Eun-tak off outside the chicken shop, leaving Reaper and Sunny inside. Eun-tak notes that Shin doesn’t eat chicken because he’s afraid of chicken blood, and realizes belatedly that he got her a part-time job at the chicken shop back then to keep her away from him.
She calls him a coward, a term he takes a very special offense to, considering that people used to cheer his bravery back when he was a general. To prove just how brave he is, he marches inside the chicken shop, resulting in an awkward four-way date between Shin, Eun-tak, Reaper, and Sunny.
Whispering loud enough for everyone to hear, Sunny asks Eun-tak if Shin is the guy who gave her so much trouble. Not to be outdone, Shin passive-aggressively tries to embarrass Reaper over Sunny by whispering loudly, which only makes things more tense and awkward.
Sunny’s surprised that Reaper and Shin are friends, and only knows Shin from him poking around her chicken shop looking for Eun-tak. Sunny observes basic formalities while questioning Shin, but those formalities are more sarcastic than anything, so Shin calls her out on her tone while being just as (im)polite.
They start squabbling back and forth, with Sunny taking exception to his use of banmal with her, though he defends its use because he’s older than her. Eun-tak tries shuffling the two men out, but both of them refuse to go.
HAH, Reaper’s taken one of Eun-tak’s suggestions on how to be sexy to heart, and whips out a lead pencil and a pair of glasses to solve a math problem at their table. Shin laughs at his efforts until he hears Reaper call Sunny by her full name, Kim Sun, in an effort to sound smarter and more official.
But Sunny’s had enough, and calls Reaper outside, demanding to know how he knew her real name when she never told him. Too late, Reaper remembers that he’d wiped her memories from the day she did tell him, and amends that he’d meant to say, “Kim Sun—…ny.”
He knows a losing game when he sees one, so he tries to peace out, but Sunny grabs his hand to stop him. Able to see past lives through touch, Reaper sees her as the queen bleeding out on the ground, recognizing the jade ring as the same one the queen wore.
To add to that, he recognizes the queen from the scroll, and sees a flashback of the king rifling through her things for the same jade ring, which he seems to take as a sign of betrayal. We see a mysterious hand placing the ring on her finger as Reaper narrates that something has gone horribly wrong… and that something starts with her.
Back in the past, we see the young queen smiling to see someone outside her palanquin—it’s Shin. The past merges into the present as the camera focuses on his face, which is looking at Reaper and Sunny’s bound hands.
We see the same flashback with the young king smiling at the young queen as she balances cups of water on her shoulders (so we’re seeing these snippets play in reverse, it seems), and past merges into present again so that we fully understand that Sunny is the reincarnated queen.
As Reaper questions everything he thought he knew, Shin just watches them, unable (for now) to see the jade ring on Sunny’s finger.
COMMENTS
Innnnteresting. It’s rare for a drama to get me this interested in its reincarnation storyline, and while I knew it’d bear some sort of fruit, I hadn’t expected it to suddenly jump into the spotlight like this. I think it’s a great twist, since we needed something of a break from the will-they-or-won’t-they with Shin and Eun-tak, and now that we know they will—y’know, just by defying god’s will and all that small stuff—this provides a welcome distraction.
I’m left with a lot of questions about how things really went down in Goryeo, which is a fun place to be, since I thought we’d kind of mined all there was out of what seemed like a very straightforward drama, with the king growing jealous of Shin and allowing that jealousy to consume him. Don’t get me wrong, the past storyline was still very compelling, I just didn’t think there’d be much more to it. While it’s a bit odd that more seemed to happen in those last few minutes than in the entire episode, I like all the possibilities we’re left with, since the show was purposefully vague about the reunion, and what this will mean for everyone.
The only thing that’s disappointing about the past storyline coming full circle again, but hopefully in a much more different way (please don’t go dark and awful on us, Reaper!), is that there’s not much of a place for Eun-tak in it. Everyone else gets to play out these really neat roles as their reincarnated selves, while Eun-tak gets left out of what now feels like the core storyline. Those last few minutes felt like they stole all my focus from the entire episode, and it seems almost too easy to forget that there’s still a huge life or death dilemma still to be solved.
Maybe I didn’t feel the full brunt of their reunion because nothing feels fundamentally changed, and also because I got the sense while watching that we ended up with two different episodes in one—we got the angsty separation, the angsty reunion, and the tentative happily ever after. Of course, it very much feels like they’re on borrowed time, but their return to normalcy almost felt too normal. And since she just returned to the house to live the life she used to, there’s the eerie feeling that we could cut out the separation bit entirely and not be missing all that much.
Granted, the separation gave us Eun-tak’s declaration of love and Shin’s latest heroic slo-mo rescue, but the core of their relationship dynamic still hasn’t changed. If given the chance to do it all over again, I’m sure Shin would have kept the truth from her, and that small amount of power she had in knowing it was swept under the rug once Shin became aware of a much bigger truth—which, like the last big truth, he’s still stubbornly keeping from her.
I’m not too worried about it at the moment, since I hope that part of the evolution of his character is that he learns to let Eun-tak in and trust her to make decisions with him, but if there was ever a wakeup call, her leaving was it. Right now she only knows that he’ll die if she removes the sword, but how mad does he think she’ll be if she finds out that he’ll die if she doesn’t? Not because of the whole dying part, but because he kept it from her?
But if putting Eun-tak in danger means more teaming up between Shin and Reaper, then I’ll have to grudgingly take it, even if it sometimes feels like Eun-tak is being used as a device for everyone else’s development. I love that Reaper’s become her knight in black armor, and that he was the one to push Shin to snap out of his downward spiral of fate-based thinking. His development from an obsessive rule-follower to being the person willing to fly in the face of destiny has been a great development, and one I honestly wasn’t expecting for his character.
And as long as those developments keep on coming, I can’t exactly complain—besides, watching Reaper freak out about any and all things relationship-oriented (like emotionally cheating with the scroll of a dead woman) are the kinds of things that make my week. Even though something tells me that those clueless days of his that we’ve so enjoyed may soon be over.

The secretary "demonstrating" BTS and EXO made my day. I am rather disappointed the chairman didn't get her one of those.

The actors playing the Eununch and Secretary are different. However, they have an uncanny resemblance which is leading to lots of questions.

YES! The resemblance IS TOTALLY UNCANNY! Even though people pointed out that they're not the same actor, I still did a double, TRIPLE take when they showed the eunuch again in this ep. Man.

I thought so too but it isn't the case though maybe they could be ancestors but if that's not the case i think it could be abit of a casting mistake not saying that i'm judging based on his appearance but it does confuse the viewer

It's anything but a casting mistake. I suspect it's a deliberate move to cast 2 look-alikes, to keep viewers guessing, and then to reveal a connection between them later.

Agree, he was meant to be the reincarnated eunuch but his present reincarnation doesn't seems to fit his crime in the past. Was it because he paid for it in Goryeo when Shin killed him?

Leaving aside the fact that the eunuch and the secretary are different actors. Didn't Kim Shin kill the Eunuch in the past.Hence, I don't think the reincarnation of the Eunuch would be neccessary at all.

Hmmm, yes - KS did kill the evil eunuch in the past. And the chairman told secretary that it was KS who "saved" the secretary by bringing him out of the alley and sponsoring him so he could live out his dream. Maybe this is KS trying to right his past wrongs? (as he tells ET later in the episode, it wasn't for him to decide if the thousands that he killed should live or die)

As for Deokhwa, he must be one of the Gods (butterfly?? or matchmaker God???), Samshin grandma spoke to him in formal language, and she never speaks jondae to anybody...

I was thinking that as well. I wouldn't have thought anything of that scene, but there were already theories in the fb discussion group I'm in suggesting that, and somehow that sort of subtle scene fell under the spotlight for me.
Furthermore, the scenes where Deok Hwa was still a kid and knew early on that Shin was a goblin, AND spoke banmal to him, suddenly isn't just some cute scenes meant to fill up airtime and give us a few laughs. Sure, it could just simply mean that he's just an entitled, bratty, rich kid; but it could help bolster this theory as well.

I think Dukkie is the most powerful god of them all. He has to be the one who brought Shin back to life and turned him into a powerful Goblin with a curse at the same time.

I have been thinking of this since we saw lady in red on the bridge at the same time Deok Hwa and they talk about getting some drinks and now we see them again but this time is her asking to meet for drinks. I think both are gods/deities. Also wonder if the gods has some kind of bets in regards of our 4 leads. Or is just lady in red trying to see if she can proof she can control the faith of our leads and they dont have free will to go against all odds and break free from the manipulation of the gods.

If that's the case then they are so cruel. I hope they'd defy them all starting with Shin.
He defied his own king's royal command in the past and he is most likely to do it again. He has been meddling with human affairs since Eun-tak was born.
I love what reaper said about the will of the gods is not their will. Maybe they'll rebel and do what they want this time instead of being control by these deities.

I initially thought, that during their first meeting on the bridge, that Samshin Halmeoni was gonna used Deok Hwa as an innocent pawn for her schemes for our otp and second leads (he returned the maple leaf to euntak, he's also the one who brought Grim to rent the house). However, the the scene where they met outside the bookstore after Samshin talked with Shin, makes me think that Deok Hwa is the one pulling the strings on whatever relationship they have. With his arrogance, his banmal speech, and him telling her that she'll have to pay because he doesn't have his card. Heck, he wasn't even the one who first acknowledge the other's presence. Not to mention, he has this arrogant look when they had eye contact.
Plus, I agree, with the previous hints in the drama about who the other characters really are, the writer isn't subtle. She like giving out straightforward hints. The slow motion between those two characters means we should pay attention.

Dear fellow Beanies, Happy New (Solar) Year!!!.
Deok Hwa being a higher Confucian god would be veeeerrry interesting. If you have the pleasure to read "Monkey", Arthur Waley's selection from Wu Cheng'En's "Journey to the West"; you will find a very bureaucratized Universe and Afterlife. In fact, the Confucian gods depicted by him could be naive, sly and some even cruel (please remeber that Journey was mostly meant to be a satire of late Ming Dynasty)... but they were subjected to Karma nonetheless. So I choose to interpret (god) Deok Hwa as a master puppeteer trying his best to accomodate their precious cargoes as best as he can with the flow of Karma. Not an easy job.
All my best for you from Caracas, Venezuela.

My guess here is that Deokhwa may be the butterfly aka God and Samshin is his wife (if gods can marry). God seems to like meddling with human lives either as a test while his wife tries to change the outcome by giving humans choices/chance (Samshin is the one suggesting to Eun Tak's mum to pray and that's how she got to be saved). She intervened when reaper came to take Eun Tak's life at 9. I'm guessing she is indirectly trying to help Kim Shin resolve his grievances in his past life.

Here's my argument, I don't think Reaper IS the King. I think Wang Yeo has a lookalike (twin?) in Goryeo. Something about a flashback in this episode lead me to believe he's the Archer.

I think Reaper is definitely the King.
1. He shares jealous tendencies just like the King
2. Why would he cry and bawl upon seeing the drawn portrait of the Queen if he wasn't the King
3. One of the episodes Shin said that in order to be a Grim Reaper, one has to sin A LOT.
- If Reaper was the king, it makes sense for him to turn into a Reaper because on the day of Shin's warrior return, the King gave orders which led to the deaths of countless innocent civilians, warriors who came back from the war, Shin's family and his own Queen.
- When Shin asked Reaper if his past life was a murderer, Reaper looks genuinely taken aback and speechless and extremely hurt. (Imo, subconsciously reaper knew he did kill someone in his past life, just that he wasn't sure and couldn't uprightly say no and brush away the possibility)
My thoughts.

From the beginning, I've always been guessing Reaper is the king:
1) in dramas about reincarnation the main characters will be linked to each other ie good friends as enemies, enemies as friends until the final realization.
2) reaper always has this lapel pin or brooch with the crown symbol when he is in reaper mode
As for the queen, I earlier thought she must've loved Kim Shin in past life but he treated her like a sister (maybe adopted sis etc) and the ring was a gift from him to her. The ring brings sorrow to the king as he knows what the gift means to the queen and he is jealous that the woman he loves is pining for another man ie Kim Shin. So all his jealousy started from the queen. With additional instigation by eunuch about how the citizens love the general it would add on to his insecurities on how lacking he is as a man and a king.

This is my first time on the Goblin thread, so I don't know if it's been brought up before, but is there anyone else who thinks Deok Hwa's more than just the Goblin's caretaker? Like, there's times when he suddenly seems so....i want to say otherworldly, but that's not exactly it. It's like he knows a lot more than he lets on and Deok Hwa's just a role he's playing.
My theory is he's actually one of the higher deities, the one who takes the form of the butterfly and he's seeing Kim Shin through this current time, kinds keeping an eye on him.

Yeah, it's been mentioned since Deok-hwa's kinda mysterious in that he seems to not only know Granny, but may even be on good terms with her seeing that they're kinda drinking buddies. Also, he took Eun-tak's maple leaf on his own and then was the one that found her whereabouts in this episode. He even told Eun-tak about Shin's confession that we've only heard in Shin's narration/thoughts! I never thought that he could be a deity, himself, but now that you mention it, that'd be wicked! That would really explain how he knows Granny, is so carefree and confident when speaking with others/elders (like Shin and his grandpa) and of course, how he seems to know everything else, too!

Is it nabi god taking human form in preparation for that specific period of time when all our characters meet again when the bride came into existence? Like is it all of him? I've seen theories that he is the god of fate that brings lovers together with red string.
Reasons why this could be true (all taken from other sources)
1. When Eun Tak asks Deokhwa to translate Goblin's notebook (which was his diary from hundreds of years ago), Deokhwa says that it's a love letter. But given the scene where the Goblin writes in his notebook asking the gods for death, Deokhwa could have been lying because he saw through the Goblin's true feelings, which he kept to himself.
2. Samshin grandma agrees to drink with him, and uses formalities with him, but Deokhwa never does with her.
3. Deokhwa made an extravagant appearance at the bookstore with a Goblin storybook to attract Eun Tak's attention and return the maple leaf to her (probably on purpose)
Reasons why Deokhwa might NOT be the butterfly/god:
1. Deokhwa couldn't see the Grim Reaper with his hat on.
2. Deokhwa was able to be swayed the Grim Reaper by looking into his eyes.
3. Deokhwa grows up like regular humans.
4. He has a grandpa.
I've really thought about this a lot (LOL) and wanted to know what others' opinions were. I don't quite think Deokhwa is a god, but I do think he is much more than what has been shown thus far. Thoughts?

Actually a lot of Koreans don't know how to read Hanja, even if you're super rich. Maybe a couple of words yes. Keep in mind that the Chinese used in that notebook is ancient Chinese, so most modern people wouldn't really know what it's saying even if they're Chinese themselves.

However, the reasons why he couldn't be a god could actually be his doing. Like, he could've very well lied or pretended that he didn't see something or did something just to keep his act, y'know? Ancient Chinese is not just the matter of being traditional or simplified. There are a lot of words usage that us modern Chinese people use. For example I can read both traditional and simplified and when I read that notebook, I couldn't understand everything since it's "ancient language". A lot of history texts from ancient China has to be translated to "regular Chinese" in order for us to understand.

I honestly looked at the text for 5 secs but from my memory it wasn't the "normal" Chinese I'm used to, you know what I mean? I was wondering about what DeokHwa knew about EunTak, beginning from the part where he bought the book on Goblins at the bookstore. I was wondering if it was purely coincidental or he/Shin had planned it.
But I recall DeokHwa's response at these junctures:
1. he realised EunTak's name only when he first sent her to school and one of her schoolmates called her name (i think). He seemed genuinely surprised to know that the girl whom his grandpa and uncle were taking care of was called "Ji Eun Tak". It was as though someone had spoken to him about her before.
2. He seemed genuinely scared when he realised Grim Reaper's true identity (when Shin was making the house all cloudy and damp)
3. He could not see Grim Reaper at the shop when they were watching the last episode of that drama.
4. I agree that his appearance at the bookstore to "return" the maple leaf to EunTak seemed staged. He could have been instructed by Shin to do that, in order to return the maple leaf to her.
5. About his reading and interpreting the hanja in Shin's diary that EunTak copied...I assumed that he could understand it and simply refrained from telling EunTak the truth. cos it was such a sombre message, that all that Shin wanted was to die...
alternatively, he could have just been lying. he could possibly read hanja, but as many have pointed out. recognising the characters and interpreting the ancient language used is vastly different. I am Chinese and can read most of the characters I spotted, but do not understand fully what Shin wrote (I relied on the subs!). He could have lied to EunTak since she assumed it was a love letter/diary entry about his first love, so that EunTak would not tease him.
6. When he said he found EunTak at the ski resort, I simply assumed that he had tracked her phonevia her telecom network. Cos his voiceover about "I found her" was narrated exactly after she read the news on the abnormal weather in Seoul (which I assume you need network access to obtain).

Because the woman in red asked him to drink with her and obviously he joined her because he said that he drank last night and was taking that hangover drink. So it could be that he asked for the lady's help to find ET.

I also think that Deok Hwa isn't exactly the god. But he's more like a special messenger with the duty of guiding the goblin to have his punishment along with the lesson he needs to learn (which would be loving others and repaying his past mistakes I guess). His ancestors have done a lot for KS, so I think the god chose one of the generation to become someone highly important in this supernatural story. Just like ET, he's another 'person' to knit this story in one. Let's see if they'll show us his true role.

Great thought. He might as well be the son of the Almighty God if he isn't the most powerful one. Kind of like Zeus's son in the Greek mythology and that's why he is in a form of a young man.

Not really...Reaper failed to recognize Granby Samshin...maybe if the Deity is of higher rank and power the lower ones fail to see their true form even nore if they don't want it....Shin is more powerful than a reaper yet he is still lower than Granny and The All Mighty God...I think the God(Samshin Granny said he was quite capricious)might as well take the form of a human and even used the appearance of the first human who helped Shin to take his guard down...

Not when she was young and she baited him...And i might see too much but i sensed that Samsinn Lady implied when she asked Dokhwa out for drinks that she was angry because of his deeds in the fate of EunTak and not just the obvious angry after talking with Shin and Dokhwa knew it...Like i'm angry with all your games type

@Miky I think they have the ability to let other supernaturals recognize them on a whim. Reaper hoobae has younger Samshin halmeoni as landlord, and he doesn't know who she is. He gets flustered whenever she mentions that s reaper keeps on appearing in her dreams. I think it depends on they whether they want you to recognize them.

About recognition... well, in one of the earlier episodes, Samshin granny in the guise of a young woman met Deok Hwa on the bridge and he asked her if she would drink with him. So they've met before but never 'recognised' each other as gods then. They did go and have a drink then. So I was surprised that Deok Hwa did not greet young granny as his previous drinking companion in this episode.

Maybe because DH was a bigger God the the lady in red.(mention in previous comments) and only the God's of the same status (sounds a bit rude) can recognize each other. Like GR[who works on earth] and GB [who's stuck on earth]. Gb was able to recognize lady in red because she reveal herself

Since episode 3, I’ve felt that Lonely Shining Goblin strikingly resembles the most perfect live-action version of an “anime” that I have ever seen.
As I’d never thought this about a drama before, I wanted to pinpoint which features lead me to this conclusion: The somber, moody tone alternating with the comical, playful tone, the atmospheric music, the artistic cinematography, the random and quirky nature of the characters and what is shown of them to viewers, the thoughtful pauses, the drawn-out scenes that simultaneously feel very significant, while not much happens, the transitions of scenes, the way early episodes bounce about in an almost vignette style to different pieces of the story, the story-building, the character tropes, the theme of fantasy, and finally, the Cinderella-candy-high school girl who captures the heart of a centuries old fantasy character and who loves/saves him in return.
I’m curious to find out if there any other Kdrama/Anime fans out there who make this connection as well?

I agree. goblin is already visually striking and aesthetically gorgeous, just as mangas are. I also love manga/anime that have references to the supernatural and folklore.
i've also seen a lot of similarities between Goblin and My Love from the Star, I'm not sure if others have already said this. They both share the motifs of past lives, supernatural/immortal beings, fate, and a painful love story. the male leads are also two people that are centuries old yet have never fallen in love with anyone except the female lead (and her past life). i'm crossing my fingers that goblin will have a cleaner ending, though.

Yes! I I totally see the connection as well. It's the immortal being whose life is about to end, then falls in love.
I absolutely adored YFAS, and it's probably why I love this drama too. The conflict between death and wanting to live is so great for drama.
The plot in YFAS was much tighter and probably more exciting objectively, but I love the moody, brooding nature of this drama!

But there is something that annoy me so much. The scene after Kim shin pay tuition for euntak, YET euntak still ASKING for those 5.000 USD inside the bag? What? It just so off...
Why kim eun sook why? I thought euntak already matured up,
She almost 20 but still asking Money from someone that already paid her tuition fee? OMO... Dear writernim, you could just make her say "I will take it as a loan, and i will pay it later... Slowly..." . Yet you just made her character to be so childish like that...

So when it comes to receiving cash on any occasion it's painful when they save it in a bank or buys stuffs with the money. Cause you know with that money comes some power ? I guess ET feels the same cause it's been same way for her.

I'm super curious tho..
Why did Reaper say that it all begin with u (Queen) ?
But they keep cutting that scene with Kim Shin face..
1. The Queen had an affair with Kim Shin ? But he's her brother right ?
2. Or the Queen keep trying to save her brother from inside the palace by sweet talking or persuading her husband (king) ?
3. She anger the evil Minister in one of the preview ? Is she a bad person as well ?

When Reaper said it all began with you (the Queen), I thought that he meant that "all HIS own questions ABOUT his erased memories" began after he started encountering items related to the Queen (ring, scroll).
Initially he was introduced as being more cold and straight-forward, just merely doing his work, going about his day to day chores robotically. Even scenarios like meeting goblin at the house (&getting his contract burned); being confronted by Goblin when he tried to take EunTak; realising EunTak could summon Goblin; these issues did not unsettle him.
Like Chairman Yoo pointed out to DH, Shin and Reaper are both miserable, for he has a long life but with no memories of his past. That was why his personality was that way initially. Cos he did not need to interact with normal, living humans for >300 years. And he knew that his duty as Reaper(& having no memories) was punishment for past terrible sins.
But after he shed tears without knowing why and felt connecting emotions when he first set eyes on the ring, Sunny & the lady's portrait, he could not continue to ignore his predicament of WHY HIS ERASED MEMORIES ARE being allowed to return.
He had said he wondered "why the divinity allowed for erased memories to be returned". And since the clues lay with Sunny (because of their first encounter), he ended up having no choice but to continue his interaction with Sunny in order to find the answer.

It came as a bit of a suprise if Dokhwa is indeed the highest GOD and the one who cursed Shin...Curious of his intentions,i guess he got bored and wanted to experiment living as a mortal while undercover…I remember Samshin Granny said he was quite the capricious God...It's hilarious how oblivious Shin is to some things,as how a mere human found Eun Tak when he couldn't and other small things;could he not see his future or did Dokhwa(if God) forge it all, that sounds such a twisted plan if it’s true…Shin must feel quite honored with all this gods keeping tabs on his affairs for centuries ...Even if it is a false thread put by the writer i still find it intresting, maybe even more thinking how all his life Dokhwa didn't feared him and talked to him so freely,it's such an intresting relationship, even if I liked it better if he was just a mere human i might say, seeing Shin always shrink when he is scolded by him...I waited so much to see Shin meet Sunny and at last it happened…Can’t wait till all the truth about her and Reaper is out, curious how will he manage it all…I wonder if Shin was the one who gifted his sister the ring or did the Eunuch planted it there to make it seem like she cheated on the King…Also, man,Gong Yoo has such a way of gazing,it’s sooo deep,it’s like he can look into your soul and steal it(love those focus shots on his gaze so much)…

It's at the early episode (maybe episode 1) when Grandpa introduced little Deok-Hwa to Shin. Grandpa said that DH is the first son after four generations. I did not get what it meant. Maybe I misinterpret the translation.
If DH is the first son for four generation, who DH relates to Grandpa? So far, we never knew DH parents.
Since the first episode, I have so many questions in mind relating to DH, such as his encountering with Grandma Samshin in the bridge in the first episode and they went to a drink.
I guess, I do agree with lots of Beanies here that DH is not just a bubbly character to make us laugh. He has an important role in the whole Goblin's story.

If DH is the only son after 4 generations, it would mean that the previous generations only had daughters and the grandpa probably married into the family and is not a direct descendant?
But this would potentially add further to DH being a deity- what if right at the beginning when Kim Shin general was presented the little boy as his follower, the little boy was blessed(?) to be a deity or a vessel for one that can only be passed down to direct male descendants?
Required fields are marked *

Maybe, but i go more with the Deity being more sly and using it an emotional bond, that Shin had with the first little boy,who Shin named the first to reach out to him as a way to blend in in the present as Dok Hwa to prevent any variable to his plan and being found out,it's clear Shin had a soft spot for the young boy and ...That and well,Shin is quite oblivious to many things actually,Dok Hwa himself told him way too many times...Doubt Shin never had the idea a God would "become" a human and stay and keep tabs on him...

- I ship Samshin Granny and Deok Hwa. Lee El looks like an absolute bomb in red, and I must find out what red lipstick she wears because she looks so mesmerising and mystifying at the same time.
- Though everyone knows by now, the actors for Goryeo Eununch and Modern Grandpa's Secretary are different, their resemblance is quite uncanny. Is it a red herring by the writers-done on purpose?
- I really don't want Grims and Sunny to break up. Did anyone see his adorable smile when Sunny was singing? And how funnily he felt guilty for her because he thought he was cheating on her with a painting? Their relationship is so interesting and quirky, because both of them are so quirky. I need so much more Sunny in each episode!
- I swear Grims and Reaper are totally married. The way they were sitting and watching 'The kids' run around was so couple-y. ?

MAAAAN i just want Dongwook's character to have at least a happy ending for this ONE life time.
Tho rn everything seems like it's gonna walk into a huge puddle of sadness and mess.
Current Day Reaper is just a sweet goofy blur guy who doesn't remember anything but it angers me that the plot just adamantly bites on to his forgotten past and make our poor guy pay.
My interpretation of the ending is:
- Reaper & Shin are gonna fall out and end up never talking. Shin might forgive the past but he cannot move on.
- Sunny & Reaper will be lovers who long for one another but never together. Because I really don't think Sunny can accept Reaper being non-human.
- It's gonna be heartbreaking for us, but I think Reaper will just fall back into his usual cycle of forgetting the past and moving on to the next job / cycle. Reaper won't be in pain, but he's gonna lose it all and not remember what he've lost.

The thing I love the most about this drama are the relationships between the characters.
Grim Reaper's confession to Shin why he told Euntak everything caught me off guard. And I love how it's emphasized that the thing that got Shin moving is the absence of Euntak. With his new resolve, I hope he gets to find that door and have a very strong will to change the fate given to him and Euntak.
Finally! I have been waiting for the Shin and Sun to meet! Boy do I love that they bickered like real siblings during their first meeting.

I can't wait to see Shin's reaction when he finds out that she's "his sister," because she's not really (at least not in this lifetime) and it's gonna be a confusing (for Sunny) and emotional (for Shin) scene. Cue Gong Yoo intensely red, teary eyes!

This was no doubt a strong episode though I have been feeling that the storytelling could always afford to be much tighter especially for the Goblin and Eun tak end.
I liked that Goblin finally learned to embrace his fears which was to love again and more importantly to confess that love to someone - something he probably has never done in the 900 years of his life. Immortality has made him lose his will to live as he's merely been going through life waiting for the Goblins bride to end it. However with his love for Eun Tak, he finds a new determination and strengthened will to live and to fight against the fate assigned by the deities.
I am almost certain that Deok Hwa is deity because the scene of him telling Goblin that he can find Eun tak is followed by a scene of the butterfly landing on the ski resort. I have always felt he's a little out of the loop on the main storyline so it'd be interesting to see how they pull him into it all.
Am looking forward to more Goryeo scenes in the next episode and the storyline taking a break from the whole Goblin's bride issue. More thoughts on the episode on my blog here: http://wp.me/p7U37n-1xW

Also not only did he kill in war, but even when he came back, he was repeatedly warned about not taking any step further. But he relentlessly went ahead, which lead to the deaths of his men, his servants, his family, etc. It was quite a death toll before he felt guilt for his actions and decided to end his life.
Also we now also know that the king had warned him about all of this even before he went to war initially. He was well aware of the king's intentions and still chose to proceed with his actions. Maybe that was his grave sin.
But I'm still waiting for Goryeo time period to completly peel off its layers to understand the complete actions of these 3 individuals and what drove each of them to do what they did. Still a lot to be uncovered i hope.

Why did the Queen choose to die with her brother?
Some beanies had earlier hypothesised that it was possible that with the time period being Goryeo-era where intermarriages within the family are common, half-siblings do marry (like in Scarlet Heart Ryeo).
So some viewers thought that the Queen could have been in love with her half-brother Shin since it SEEMED as though Shin was the one who gifted her the jade ring. (I think it is a red herring, though, given how clueless Shin is towards matters of the heart even after 900+ years)
In the preview of ep 10, we are also shown scenes where the evil eunuch was speaking to the Queen arrogantly. So I presume that she knew the eunuch was controlling the young king (and the court powers). She could have thought that the only person capable of standing up to the eunuch was Gen Shin.
I'm hypothe-sizing that Gen Shin and the Queen actually meant "Go forward", as in go forward and get rid of the eunuch and other people trying to make the young King a puppet, so as to safeguard the King's position and authority.

Intermarriages happens mostly in the royal family to preserve their royal blood. The Kim clan were not royalty, only by marriage. There is no need for Shin to marry his own sister.
If she was in love with her own brother than that is entirely different but why would we go there Kim Eun-sook?
It'll make more sense if the king was jealous because his queen favored her brother over him or even love him more but not in a romantic way.
I think that if he wanted to kill the eunuch he would've done it in a different way. He is an undefeated general who can calculate his moves perfectly in order to take down an enemy. Surely he must have know that he can't possibly kill the eunuch before he gets to him.
I think he was openly defying his commands and thought that he would restore his honor. Foolish but what's the used of living without honor? His whole clan is ruined without it.
This is just me looking at it from Goryeo's point of view and what makes sense to me. I know this is not a proper sageuk and it's not meant to be so I maybe taking it too seriously lol.

Hey guys this is my first time writing on goblin recap....
I loved the episode so damn much probably my favorite yet especially the last part which suddenly accelerated the normal paced story which was something that at least I didn't expect....
The only thing that I didn't understand in the last scene was that what exactly was on goblin's mind... I mean we were shown him intently staring at the duo with an incomprehensible (it looked like that to me at least) expression so I couldn't really make out his thoughts... Did he see the past from reaper's mind or was he just staring at them like that.... I seriously don't get it or maybe it's just that I'm getting waaayy too impatient to know the next things....
I loved the sibling bickering so much.. It was like they fell into the bickering feat so easily.. Throwing barbs back and forth is so a brother - sister thing to do....
Also I'm very curious about what exactly is deok hwa or is it that we are reading way too much into him coz I'm pretty sure he does show human tendancies too or is it a part of the larger act???? Don't know only time will tell....
And lastly that one scene which is probably my favorite of the entire series... The scene of them happily laughing and clicking photos was supposed to be a happy one but I don't why do I feel the underlying sad melancholy... Please drama gods let that fear of mine not come true and let the housemates be happy forever.....

Doubt he has the power for that...He was more likely listening to their conversation and was still in shock after hearing the name and thinking more likely if she is indeed his sister that reincarnated...He was studying both of them even more after Sunny touched Reaper as he knows what means and Reaper was quite shocked...

I too think that if he did not see the past in reaper's mind he most likely with that intent stare of his could be contemplating the probabilities of sunny reincarnated as his sister after he heard the reaper say her name out loud....
But whichever way they go I'm in for all of it since both of them would be a good way to move the story forward from narrative point of view....

Hmm... do we know if Shin can read Grims' mind? He can read mostly everyone else's, right? We know Grims can read Shin's (thanks to today's ep, hee!), but I'm not sure about the other way around. ANYWAYS, I took it as while he didn't know exactly what was going on, he probably knew that Grims was seeing her past life since Shin witnessed Sunny grab/touch Grims' hand and saw the whole thing go down--the hand grab and the way Grims just stared at her for the longest time. Now that Grims has some of the puzzle pieces together, I think he's gonna tell Shin what he saw.

I don't think Shin was seeing Grim's vision. I think there are stuff that's exclusive for reapers. Like how Shin can't see what's written in the death card. Or like GedSkaiKru said, they can only read what the other's willing to share - conversing telepathically. Or the visions of the past are exclusive for reapers just like visions of the future are exclusive for Shin, which is a nice parallel.

I really like the way reincarnation is being handled here. In the East Asian tradition, reincarnation isn't necessarily cause for joy--because a better new life isn't a given. Sometimes it's a period of debt repayment, sometimes it's punishment, sometimes it's a transition stage that you have live out before moving on to a better life cycle. It does seem like Sunny is in that transition stage, in which that huge debt owed to her (by Yeo) needs to be repaid before she can move on to a better life in which she doesn't experience such paralysing ennui. I'm happy that we get to know more about Sun in Goryeo next episode, because more information and tbh, the Goryeo scenes are so well done.
Finally, confirmation that Grims is Wang Yeo! To be completely honest, @cherryarrow and I have agreed that Kim Eun-sook dropped a huge hint in an early episode that cemented it for us: when Shin was still packing to move away from Korea, he and Grims had a banter session about whether he was done packing and who Grims could have been in his previous life. Grim then said that he could have been a king, which Shin laughed off, which prompted Grims to say "jim...". That's the imperial we, used by Goryeo kings until the Mongolians invaded. Shin picked up on it and sneered, before Grims explained that he was talking about Shin's luggage (also jim in Korean). That was actually pretty clever but also sorta subtle.
On Deok-hwa being a god: lots of people have mentioned the possibility of him being the traditional god of marriages, and he was wearing blue when he first had a scene with Samshin Halmae--the colour of the thread that the god of marriages uses. Also another throwaway that wasn't mentioned in the recap is that Deok-hwa really went for that drink with Samshin Halmae, since he was sipping on that hangover beverage and actually told Shin that himself. I mean, Deok-hwa is a sweetheart but he knows way too much for a third-generation chaebol that lazes around a whole deal. Just the fact that he lied about the diary entry to Eun-tak is super suspicious--and most Koreans can't read Hanja, not even the rich ones. Maybe the ones who pick up Mandarin can, but even then they learn the Simplified characters, not the Traditional ones that are used in Classical Chinese writing--and I really, really wouldn't be surprised if he turns out to be more than he seems to be.
Can't wait for the next episode, because GORYEO SCENES!!!! So, so good.

Haha yeah it's a lot of sageuk-y stuff that can flash by quite quickly, and I'm glad we managed to pick up on it!! I think jim is literally just "We" in English, in the context that it represents both the imperial power and the emperor/king himself. That's the closest term I can think of, heh.

There's the "jim" which is higher ranking than "kwa-in"! Man that moment was less than a second, it's easy to miss it.

Just in case: when I say that most Koreans can't read Hanja, I mean FLUENTLY. Fluently enough to read and write on a daily basis. A lot of ethnic Chinese can't read Chinese characters fluently either, so no shame in that.
Also: the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi), administered by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, is the most popular proficiency test for Chinese in Korea. It is conducted in Simplified Chinese.

Good point! I'd forgotten about that myself. But assuming that Deok-hwa has memorised a thousand Chinese characters (and no more than that) and knows the meaning of every single one of them, I wanted to know if that means complete fluency in the language. So I checked out the word lists that HSK uses to determine proficiency in Chinese, since it's one of the leading tests in the world for doing that, and they are non-cumulative over six levels.
HSK 1: 174
HSK 2: 173
HSK 3: 270
HSK 4: 447
HSK 5: 621
HSK 6: 978
Total: 2663
A non-native speaker of Chinese would need to have memorised a minimum of 2663 characters to achieve the highest grade in HSK. We must also take into account that the HSK is conducted in Simplified characters, while the diary entry, written in Classical Chinese, uses Traditional characters as well as a completely different grammatical system from the modern Chinese that HSK tests for.
To account for the odds that he learned Traditional characters as a child, I also checked out the requirements for the highest band (Band C, Level 6) of the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) administered by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. The recommended number of words for someone to achieve that level in the test is 8000. This is also for testing in the modern form of the language.
Based on the above, I feel like there is a slight possibility that Deok-hwa is completely human and simply understood the diary entry while choosing to withhold its actual meaning from Eun-tak. Maybe Deok-hwa also learned how to read Classical Chinese, and maybe he learned more than the thousand characters he mentioned. But that doesn't really explain how Deok-hwa knows about the "a hundred days ago, on a good day" line that Shin hasn't mentioned to anyone else but Eun-tak, which is quite suspicious to me.
So while it is possible that Deok-hwa is just like us, I definitely feel strongly that he's more than what he seems on the surface.

The screen in the scene between Yeo and Shin looks like a gold-paint-on-black-lacquered-wood version of the Irworobongdo?
I read up a little on it and it seems to have been used mainly during the Joseon court to actually distinguish itself from its Goryeo predecessor, so perhaps it's a little anachronistic haha.

Yes it this this particular Irworobongdo screen, the black and gold that I am interested in. The first mention in the Annals that speak of acquiring materials to paint a five peaks screen was in 1614 so that would make this screen around 500 years too early but who's counting it is a fabulous piece. There are 24 surviving Irworobongdo screens. I am guessing that this is late Joseon because the later ones are more flat and expressionistic. In brush painting one of the required disciplines is to master painting rocks and snow. Perhaps this version is an image of the five peaks in winter. (that would work with the snow theme in Goblin) I don't know but I will find out I'm so OCD. Korean Art has such a distinctive character. It has a certain nonchalance and pithy elegance that has got me hooked. It never lets go of its folk art legacy so its has its own spontaneous authentic voice.

If DeokHwa is a god then he can easily disguise himself or pretend to not recognize.
I think DeokHwa and Samshin Granny are gods sort of working at cross purposes, Samshin wants Goblin to die while DeokHwa doesn't.
Our first encounter with them, they were going in opposite directions. He also brought Reaper and Goblin together by renting out Shin's house.

Some of the reasons why I believe Deokhwa could be a god too (higher god) I might list some more later if I remember them
1. I've never seen Samshin Halmoni talk to any normal human being/person who does not have any fate or relation to the supernatural world. Even that child in the hospital saw her in her true form (old lady) which might actually mean that the kid could have been capable of seeing otherwordly things or that child was a ghost.
But she speaks to Deokhwa, who apparently is a human being, and asks him for a drink.
2. Samshin Halmoni speaks Banmal to everyone else, but Deokhwa.
3. Butterfly scene from yesterday's scene was almost a giveaway

First and foremost, thanks for the recap :) As for the story itself, I guess it's just me but somehow I can't connect with Eun Tak. She loves the Goblin but the only feeling I get from her is that it's just puppy love. It's like we're watching 2 different phases of love - Eun Tak (teenage crush), Goblin (true love) - which in the end makes it hard to root for the OTP. In addition, I kinda agree that with everything that's been happening lately, Eun Tak story seems out of place which is wrong as she's the main heroine...Anywho, rooting for the Grim Reaper and Sunny to at least have a happy ending in this lifetime.

Agree with you about Eun Tak and Goblin (puppy love vs true love). It's not working for me either, especially when they throw in scenes of Goblin and Reaper talking about the 'kids' just hits a wrong note after declarations of love.
For it to work for me, Eun Tak has to have a larger role, perhaps she is also a reincarnation or something because as it is the line between Goblin being a surrogate guardian/father type vs boyfriend/lover is too blurry

On a more serious note, I think it's much more reasonable for this life to be EunTak's first. Only the most unique human for our lonely dokkaebi. A new start for his new life.
I was wondering if her tattoo fading, has any relation to her task. Like, is there a deadline or something on how she can see and touch the sword?

Shin was 37yrs old when he died in Goryeo (if I remember correctly). He had to be married by that age. Maybe Eun-tak was his past wife.
Her character is kind of left out with all these reincarnations and it's a bit uninteresting.
I hope there is more to her. A friend of the queen perhaps? She gets along well with Sunny.

That's possible. I suppose he can be married in his past life and not be in love with his wife (since ET is his first love).
I agree, she's kinda left out of the loop with all these Goryeo characters having a reunion in modern times.

KGE just isn't working out for me in Eun Tak's role. I'm not sure if it's a director's or actor's issue, but the the choice of having her get into those petty modes and in a split second, break into those (IMHO) plastic, fake smiles so regularly just takes the character away. She pouts and smiles so often that it's getting very frustrating to watch. Every time she spits something spiteful at Goblin, but within a moment, expose her pearlies in an 'acting in a CF' manner, I just cringe big time. The love story between the two is already an issue for me, but these choices/ directions just make it worse. And they do drag the whole darn thing along episode after episode that it's become a little overbearing.
The other supporting characters make use of their very limited screentime so well, and when Reaper is with Goblin, the real chemistry shines without the need of that overwhelming main love story.
I really wanted to love the show more, since the first few episodes really brought me in. Now I am all for the plot moving forward and much much less of the romantic (icky) story between the two leads. The back and forth is really grating now.

The first bit of the ep was a bit slow for me but omg the gorgeousness of the shot at the ski resort where the light hits half of the hill- totally breathtaking views which amplify the mood of the drama. The winter trees scene too. A ++++ to having a good budget, a good director and good location scouter.
Pace picks up in the last 10 min as per this drama's modus operandi- a bit disappointing that the pace went down again compared to last week but I think next ep is going to be pretty fast.
Also the back hug scene I loled even though there was a confession there cause the actors just looked insanely cold and ET's hair kept whipping into KS's face haha.

When Shin and ET faced each other in snowed palm tree forest, my mind went to the old drama, Winter Sonata. Both were beautifully shot, and conveyed the conflicted feelings of the individuals in the frame.
As for the story, I always love reincarnation story. This beautiful drama make me hope for any producer/PH to adapt "One Life, One Incarnation: Beautiful Bones" a CNovel into a drama too. It has beautiful incarnation story. Oh, how I wish it would be happened soon...

Now that Reaper and Goblin will find out their connection, I hope they won't break apart...
About ET , what bothered me is how she never asked for the Goblin's opinion about not pulling the sword. She might not want to part away from him, and that's understandable. But has she thought of how he feels after living 900+ years? We are not talking about a human life span here, we are dealing with someone who might (or might not) have suffered an eternity.
And yes, how could she still ask (even if jokingly) for the $5000 when he has paid for her tuition?

1. Deokhwa might be a higher God! But chances are he might also not be?
2.It's starting to feel like the story is going in circles, instead of a got in a cold weather they have a weird hair-brushing thing? I mean what the HECK? you spent money for such a nice scenery and then you give us a hair-bursh LOL. Hair-brush? I was disappointed.
3.Sunny and reaper might not have a happy ending, thier relationship started off cheesy and despite the lack interaction, they're already so invested into each other. I am beginning to think neither of the leads could have a happy ending at this rate.
4. The past story might not be as strong as the future, to be honest I'm not even that sure as to why Kim Shin is being punished for such a small reason, and a thousand years of living, who is God cooling besides himself. No wonder why he came down as DeokHwa to live As a nephew since he got bored of giving weird punishments! That oldie up there! LOL.
5.EunTak is a cheerful character I honestly anticipate to watch her scenes, I'm not sure why people are so hung up on Sunny?
Anyway the ratings are rising. While the number of episodes are passing by, only six left! When did that happen. IMMA throw fit! ??

probably my first time commenting,
I honestly feel tired watching it.
It's good but didn't bring something new,
I even question why I bother watch the entire episode when I can skip the middle part, the ski part, the bickering part and just tune in at the 50 mark.
I know the bickering is enjoyable but between that, the euntak crying, her neverending childlike attitude, nothing really matter.
It feels like they and us knew what to do but then let just mask the it with slo mo and georgeous cinematography, but it's been 9 episode of the same slomo and cinematography.
I hope episode 10 give more direction cause overall goblin spending their time explaining what people been suspected without make the character move on some direction.
Oh we discovered their back stories, oh they knew who is who but do they do something important? They just meet for no context.
With the theory that the god is among them even make it an easy way to solve the problem, wait they don't have any problem as they dramatically said.
They can just have a talk and solve it all.
I honestly disappointed that each episode doesn't seem to be better than the last one

Too much flashbacks. The lingering is too long in some scenes. Cinematography is excellent but when it is overused, you tend not to appreciate it anymore.

Aw man, love this drama to bits, but can we tone down on the insanely crisp and clear audio? Major props for getting such clear audio and allowing us to hear the actors' voices (esp during that backhug scene w/ the intense wind), but it can be a bit distracting and off-putting. I'm talking about how we can almost always CLEARLY HEAR the actors' chewing, drinking, swallowing their saliva (sorry, tmi, I know, but it's happened A LOT in this show!) and omg, in this ep, we heard what seemed like forever of Shin dragging his feet in the snow. I was just like, "Dude! Hurry!" It sounds like they miked up every part of the actors' body, lawl.

Oh, I actually didn't notice the squeaky cable car sounds! Haha. I was wondering if they'd play another OST when she blew out the matchstick and no Shin since they replayed that scene (probably due to a commercial break), but they ended up leaving it silent. I do, however, notice every time (and now it's gotten to the point where I know it's coming) Kim Go-eun swallows before talking. Omg, that sounds so creepy and weird, but in my defense, that's how loud it is! So yeah, I have a feeling they're not gonna stop now, so I'll just watch, fangirl and spazz, cringe and repeat.

Sigh, I feel Goblin turned into a long advert instead of a drama with a compelling story (not theory).
This and LOBS prob one of those gorgeous shows where the romance feel lackluster. I don't even feel anything at their declaration of love but this is the episode where everyone feeling is out in the open, right?
Which is strange because both actor/actress of Goblin are highly capable. (and they're both famous for their chungmuros endeavors!)
Anyway, yay for (hopefully) Goryeo focused episode on 10, now I can finally find out what exactly happened in the past and drop the drama like I did with LOBS after DR death.

I felt the writer got a list of PPL and wrote the plot around it. It was very distracting. In the second half of the episode, there wasn't a single scene without PPL. Eun Tak was in the hospital and then waited till she got back to the PPL resort to light the match. Some of this could have been handled better by the director with transition scenes. This just reminds me of King of Drama where the director had to move a fighting scene to a PPL juice warehouse last minute.
Also the move to the PPL chicken shop could have been handled better by writing it into the story early on. Guess this is the downside to liveshoot and last minute script changes to accommodate PPL.

If i suddenly up and move to korea, Kdramas are definitely to blame. They are like the biggest PPL for the country.... Tho its sad that i read about moving to south korea as a black person can be frightening and lonely tho one can argue that moving anywhere at first can be those things and more but most articles i read seems to emphasise on "Being Black" as a major reason when if you travel to south Korea which dampened my spirits and is such a shame since it seems somehow without warning i have come to love the country.. ( Noone ever mentioned this side effect of being a kdrama addict)
That aside tho do south koreans drink from some everlasting youth fountain.. i just keep on looking at sunny's skin and face and the actress doesnt look a day older that 22 at most to me and even her stature.. Its unreal
And i wonder what jeans she was wearing in that scene where she was singing to ward off ghosts

Kentertainment has successfully sold the world the brand called Korea. I too find that restaurants/shops are highlighting that their food/goods or services are from Korea and it's a great selling point. Every poster now, I look at to see if I recognise a Korean celebrity. At home there are many Korean made things. The 'K' brand has become ubiquitous and well loved and kdramas have played a great role in making this so.

Hilariously, Shin chalks it up to the strength of human will to change destiny (hint, hint), and teases Reaper for believing in a god he can’t even see when he can’t believe the human he literally just saw. Of course, all Reaper can think of is the paperwork nightmare this is going to cause.
I didnt get the hint can someone clarify.
And when shin says Me too does he mean I love u too ??

@ HallyuMint
The hint is to both Reaper and Shin (who gets the hint). Reaper needs to start believing that the god's rules can be broken even by humans and that therefore Goblin can change his fate (set by god) if he is at least as desperate as that human who was merely looking for the restroom.
Yes, I believe that when Shin said "Me too" he was responding to the last thing Eun Tak thought and was communicating to him when she confessed to needing him and loving him. So it was as close to "I love you too" that Shin is likely to say in words at this moment in time.

Can anyone help explain how exactly EunTak summons him now?
The first time she summoned him(from buckwheat field), he first heard her three wishes, then noticed the smoke from his fingers. Then somehow appeared behind her.
She didnt blow the loanshark's lighter, but Shin said she prayed fervently, so he could find her.
When she went missing and he was looking for her and he teleported himself from his front door to possible venues, it was meant to show us viewers that it was more of his will in finding her, rather than some genie lamp power that EunTak has?
Then when EunTak blew the candle on the congratulatory cake at home with the 3 guys, Shin teleported and stood behind her. Is this meant to show us the genuine mechanics of it?
chingu
December 31, 2016 at 11:38 AM
@khl I think there's at least two ways Eun-tak can summon Shin or when Shin can find out her whereabouts (w/o Deok-hwa's help, I guess. Ha) and it's 1.) when she's blowing out fire–whether from a lighter, a matchstick, a candle or any form of ? and 2.) when she's in danger and earnestly calls for and/or thinks about Shin.
Growingbeautifully
December 31, 2016 at 6:24 PM
Yes, @Van is right. The clue is given by Samshin granny when she told Eun Tak's mother when she's in danger, to pray earnestly for help and a kind deity might hear her and have pity. It happens that the deity most tuned in to Eun Tak and the only one she really knows can help her, is Goblin so she always summons him with a wish or a prayer.

Thanks Heads!
I like how this show holds its logic together most of the time. However in this episode there is one aspect that gets me wondering. ... Shin is able to recognise some present day people as particular persons of the past, yet he did not recognise Sunny when he looked at her for so long and even saw her future. I had been so sure that he'd recognise his sister and hoped that there'd be a reunion... I've been wanting them to meet, but their meetings this episode had them antagonistic and suspicious of each other instead.
Still it was a great episode for all it's internal character developments, and with swoony and ridiculous moments.
Noteworthy Moments
- I loved Eun Tak's homecoming... reminiscent of her return after taking the exams - all the guys had a hand in it, Reaper was smiling and Shin was super proud of himself.
- Swoony bits of course include Shin's hearing Eun Tak's confession, saving her and then giving her a back hug and bothering to respond to that confession without ever saying the word to her.
- Loved how he says that he wants to be with her for her whole life but couches it in terms of her paying back the loan over an 80 years time span and not a day earlier. A reverse loan shark LOL!
- Loved Goblin and Reaper watching Eun Tak and Deok Hwa, and remarking on the 'kids' like an old married couple. What a bromance!
- Nicest scene was the photo-taking where we get the most natural and carefree smiles from all 3 of our main characters.
- Love how this writer prepares the way for significant scenes ... well maybe the flashbacks are a bit much, however in the case of Sunny grabbing Reaper's hand, we now know that he has a choice because there was a precedent with another Reaper and his wife. He can choose to do nothing or to run away with Sunny if ever her name crops up. However we had Shin's vision of the future where Sunny tells Reaper to go away. So there's so much cliff hanger material here.
We've also been given now the option that Goblin can possibly change his own destiny if he is as desperate, (and may I add as creative and determined) as a human being. If a mere human could transcend the portal into Reaper's tea room just to use the toilet, what more can a deity do? I've suspected for a while now, but this episode confirms, that Goblin is basically a lazy, do-nothing-as -far-as possible guy. Now he has to pull up his socks (literally he may end up bribing more Reapers with them!) to keep Eun Tak alive and change his fate.
- It was hilarious that the shaman could have said the strange man who looked like a dinosaur was Sunny's brother, or the Goblin, or a deity but she said Gong Yoo!!! This show likes to promote things GY, like his movie too.
Surprises and Questions:
- Surprising 'toilet' humour... that it was Reaper's tea-room or bed-room that is associated with the loo ... LOL!
- I'd love to see the behind-the-scenes of Secretary learning...

Well, the myth i heard of is that the one in the middle will go missing / have something bad happen to the one in the middle, followed by the ones at the side. Basically all three will face bad things but the first to go down is the one in the middle

"Nicest scene was the photo-taking where we get the most natural and carefree smiles from all 3 of our main characters"
+10000!
I saw that too! Their smiles! I went from thinking "Go Eun's smile makes her face glow" to "Whooa, Gong Yoo looks super adorable". And when my eyes caught Dong Wook's smile, surprisingly, it captivated me and I, without even realizing, smiled… to the screen.
PS: I was wondering what joke they were talking about in order to produce those "natural and carefree smiles".

About Shin recognising Sunny as his sister... I think Shin did mention before that in certain reincarnations, people are born with the exact same face. The cheating couple whom he brought together when he was at the coffeehouse with EunTak, he explained that he is the guardian of their respective exes.
In Sunny's case, he does not recognise her cos it is Yoo Inna, not KimSoHyun. That is why he was so struck when he met young DeokHwa for the first time.

When sunny was describing Shin to the shaman, there was this line about him being like a guy who was sitting in the world's smallest coffee house (according to the subs). Is that a meta reference to Coffee Prince?

I think i missed something from previous. But what is the significance of a broom? Kim Shin says if you pull sword out i will get pretty. But Eun Tak says she will wait till first snow fall because they will need a broom then.

In the children's books about goblins (the ones Euntak read to 'research'), the goblins were said to turn into a broom. So this became Euntak's way of teasing Shin every time the sword-pulling is mentioned.

Thanks! I didn't know this bit and kept wondering if Eun-tak was really referring to an actual sweeping broom. ?

I'll just copy and paste this here:
"According to traditional Korean folklore, dokkaebi are NOT derived from humans nor are they in human form. Dokkaebi are derived from inanimate items – typically household objects such as brooms, baskets, grinding pestles, and objects stained with human blood."

Exactly why Eun-tak kept saying he'd turn into a broom.

Omg, thank you so so much for sharing this! It's been one of the many questions I've had throughout this drama, but never got an answer to. I kept wondering if she meant an actual sweeping broom! And she did! Now that you mentioned the household items, I think I remember about it being mentioned here on Dramabeans in one of the Goblin posts before the drama aired.

Hm, if so, then won't Shin turn into a sword? Since he sorta died and became a goblin thanks to the sword thats stained with SO MANY PEOPLE'S BLOOD.

HeadsNo2 is a BTS fan, too? Omo! ? Fellow army alert!
Since Heads mentioned how Eun-tak seemed left out in the Goryeo part of the story... I'm wondering about what could have been if there was no Eun-tak in this story at all? I mean, some people have been complaining about how there's too little plot going on in every episodes so far. Imagine if the story was like this: Kim Shin & the Queen were not related, they loved each other in the past thus made the King jealous. He killed Shin, Shin became Goblin. The King and Queen reincarnated as Grim Reaper and the Goblin's Bride. So it'll become a love triangle between Goblin, the chicken shop owner, and Reaper. I think it would make for a richer story than this one. But well... it's only my imagination working anyway. LOL. I guess this is better be made into a fanfiction ?

He can't be single in Goryeo at his age. She must have been his wife.

His wife? I mean, as much as I'd love to see Kim Go-eun in historical garb, I don't think her being present in their past life is necessary. I'd actually prefer it if he just met her (face) for the first time in this lifetime and while it's quite sad (and kinda unbelievable) that he genuinely fell in love with someone for the first time in 900+ years, I find that much more meaningful. If she was also a character in the past, then it'd be too much of a coincidence for my liking... but if she was, I'd rather she be one of his sister's friend (I think it was you or someone else that brought that up in the above posts? Since Sunny and Eun-tak get along so well) and they both liked each other. Now that would be cute!

Ha, I guess she could be his wife even if she was his sister's friend. My bad. I'd just prefer it if that was the story behind how they met rather than her already being his wife.

If she was his wife he'd remember her so scratched that idea. I'd run with it if this was a 30 eps drama.

Well, considering that the marriage in those days were pretty much arranged then it's a possibility.
However I will have to agree with you. It's more meaningful that their first meeting was here in this life.
It's a Beautiful lifeeeee...
It's a Beautiful loooove...
At least it's better than Almost Paradise lol.

There's already a lot of comments & theories about Deok Hwa's character so I won't be talking about that. I'm just so glad about the cute bickering of the 2 siblings. It's just so natural even without them knowing.
Also, I'm curious about what the shaman said about the jade ring bearing the sins & grudges of its previous owner. We all know it was the Queen's/Sunny's, and the grudge part makes sense. I wonder about the sin part?

Finding myself more and more invested in the Goryeo scenes, and the Shin-Reaper-Sun angles. I agree that Eun-tak has become a plot device for other people's actions. She's more of a vessel or a tool (lol) for others.
Hoping they throw a twist in her story, something more than constant damsel. Still kinda iffy on her romance with Shin too - the age difference will always make me pause :(

For me, it feels iffy not because of the age difference but more on their maturity level. Yes, the Goblin can be petty but when he's serious, you can feel his sincerity. As for Eun Tak, I feel as if the 9 year old Eun Tak is more mature than the 19 year old Eun Tak. It's just that for someone who lost everything, I didn't feel as if she lost anything.

I agree with you. I find myself more invested in the Shin-Reaper-Sun storyline as well and was so excited when I think we are moving along into that storyline now. Although I am not as thrown off by the romance as I expected to be going into this, I also pause with the romance because at times I don't see them as romantic couple or a good match. Like during the backhug, I stared and stared and it was beautiful but I wasn't sold. I kept thinking does Gong Yoo look too old? No Gong Yoo is ageless, does that mean Kim Go Eun looks too young here?
