The Lonely Shining Goblin: Episode 3

We’re only on Episode 3, but wow are we in for massive developments. I wouldn’t say that the story is moving quickly, exactly—it likes to linger and draw out its moments—but it does feel quite packed and keeps us on the edge of our seats to know more, and the show upholds the moody, sentimental fantasy without betraying any breaks in the world, which I appreciate. But despite that fantasy shell and the centuries-old gods and spirits at the center of the story, it’s the very human emotions and sorrows that make the drama feel present and gripping.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

Abducted by her aunt’s loan sharks, Eun-tak squeezes her eyes shut and sends up a frantic, silent prayer. We hear Samshin Grandma’s advice to her mother all those years ago, about praying earnestly in a moment of life or death, in case a weak-hearted god is listening. Ah, so it wasn’t the lighter flame that calls the goblin, but the prayer? (Gong Yoo conjuring spell duly noted.)

As Eun-tak prays, the birthmark on her neck flashes, and across town, somehow Shin senses it. He’s in the middle of his own mealtime cutlery war with Reaper, but upon sensing this, he lets his floating dinnerware crash to the table.

The loan shark screeches the car to a halt, seeing something peculiar in the distance. One by one, the street lamps explode, sending everything into blackness except the car’s headlights.

Off in the distance, two tall figures appear in the haze, gloriously backlit as they slooow-motion hero-walk toward the car. Seriously, it goes on a while. Goblin and Reaper, wonder twin powers activate!

The loan sharks wonder, “What are those guys? Men in black or what?” Then the headlight bulbs explode too, darkening the scene further. Goblin and Reaper seem to vanish, and one scared loan shark urges the other to punch the accelerator.

The car squeals forward, and as it does, a bluish-green light cuts through it, right down the middle. They try to make sense of the things when one half of the car goes one way, carrying the loan sharks, and the other half of the car goes the other, carrying Eun-tak. Sarah Brightman scores the moment: Time to say goodbyyyyye….

Eun-tak sobs in fear, but her half of the car slows safely to a stop. Shin reappears in the road carrying his flaming goblin sword (wait, so he could pull it out? Or are we just conveniently ignoring his curse right now?), and he tosses it away to retrieve Eun-tak’s scarf.

When Eun-tak looks up, she sees Reaper standing by, and then Shin opens her car door to help her out. That seems unnecessary considering the whole open-air situation going on, but far be it from me to deny the hero his chivalry.

She takes his hand and stumbles into his arms, and looks a little moony-eyed when he asks if she’s okay. I swear the Reaper half-rolls his eyes as he moves away from the car, and the lopsided thing crashes onto its open side, which makes Eun-tak jump and turn into Shin’s arms again.

When she finally recovers her words, she asks incredulously, “Am I okay? That’s what you ask? After you split a car like that?”

Shin just tells her to wait here, but she chases after him to ask if he means to kill those loan sharks. She doesn’t believe his denial and points out that Reaper came along, and surely he wouldn’t have come to save her. Reaper agrees that her logic makes more sense.

Shin assures her that he won’t kill them—he’ll just show him his anger, so that they’d wish they’d died instead. Okay, that plan has its appeal, too.

He finds the loan sharks begging for help, trapped in the car that has tipped over. Shin delivers their fate: For two days, this road will disappear from the map, making it impossible for anyone to help. “You’ll hurt like death but you won’t die,” he states. “In two days, fortunately, you’ll be found by the police. You can pay for your crimes at the police station. Be thankful you won’t have to pay for them with me.”

Then it’s Reaper’s turn to step up, and he informs them of the story they will now believe: The two loan sharks fought, saw nothing else, and will never make up.

Afterward, as the three walk down the road, Eun-tak’s comments are snippy, as she’s still ticked off at everything that’s happened. She asks pointedly if they don’t have a car, and whether she’s dead and on her way to the afterlife, and whether they’ll be killing her now.

Heh, her passive-aggressive barbs amuse me, mostly for the way they annoy Reaper, who beams a glare at Shin and telepathically asks when they’ll be getting their gratitude for saving her life. He keeps complaining until Shin finally yells at him to be quiet—and Eun-tak whirls around with hurt eyes, thinking he’d just told her to shut it. I notice Reaper wags a finger at Shin, enjoying his discomfort.

Then Eun-tak gripes about how there aren’t even any passing cars on this road, and stomps off. Reaper gleefully reminds Shin whose idea it was to make this road invisible for two days.

As they sit at a restaurant afterward, Eun-tak asks why Shin hasn’t left yet, and he replies that he will soon. She asks how he came tonight when she didn’t blow out a flame, and he says, “It’s like I just heard you. Save me, something like that.” She says she thought it to herself, and he says she must be the type to think very loudly. Ha.

She says he didn’t have to show up, and he says, “I didn’t have a reason not to come.” She concedes an earlier point he made about her living her life like it’s a freebie, and explains that he saved her mother’s life and her own, so she’s been okay to live that way—she got to be born, and meet her mother.

“So I’ve decided not to hate you now,” she announces. “If we met again, I wanted to say that. Although you probably hoped we wouldn’t meet.”

Shin just lets her have her say, though he notes that it seems she still hates him. She snaps that she doesn’t, and tells him that she won’t make wishes or think of him in the future, so he can leave peacefully. She tacks on, “And I hope you meet a nice person. Someone who helps you discover the true you. Someone pretty. Pretty in heart, not face, since you say you don’t look at faces.”

She gets up to leave him with the food, and Shin stops her to ask, “I didn’t eat this, but I’m supposed to pay?” Eun-tak protests that she didn’t eat either, and moreover, she doesn’t have money.

Shin says he’ll pay if she stays and eats. That mollifies her a bit, but she’s still a little snappish and says she doesn’t want to eat with him, and requests her dinner wrapped to go. “See, you do hate me,” Shin notes.

Back at his goblin mansion, nephew Deok-hwa gives Shin the skinny on Eun-tak and her horrible family. Her mother’s death left her with a hefty 150 million won (about $150 grand), but being a minor, Eun-tak can’t access the money on her own, which is why Aunt is keeping her.

Hearing that Deok-hwa did the legwork to collect this info, Shin tells him, “I’m shocked to see you have uses.” Deok-hwa asks why he’s interested in these people, Shin and replies, “I mean to punish them.” Deok-hwa can’t see why punishment would involve two gold bars and whines to be given some too (“Haven’t I committed a lot of sins? Don’t I deserve a thousand punishments?”).

Shortly thereafter, those two gold bars appear in Eun-tak’s room, and Aunt finds them and just about has puppies. The cousins make greedy grabs for the bars, assuming that Eun-tak converted her hidden stash of cash into gold, and a three-way squabble breaks out.

Ah, I love that this nobody in this hateful family can trust each other, so they end up sitting up late into the night, determined to outlast the others to claim it for themselves. Eyelids droop and heads nod off… and in the morning, Aunt and Oppa Cousin wake up to find Girl Cousin and the bars long gone.

Aunt and Oppa tear out of the house to track her down, and from a nearby restaurant, Shin and Deok-hwa watch them run by. Deok-hwa notices Shin’s eyes glued to the TV, which is turned to a K-pop performance. Shin explains that the king he served was about the age of that idol—seventeen.

In a serious, faraway voice, he describes lying on the ground at the hottest hour of day, in the blinding light, endlessly resenting somebody: “Whether it was the king, or god, or me—I’ve forgotten that.”

Later, Shin makes Reaper and Deok-hwa watch that idol perform, calling him the reincarnation of his thousand-year wrath. Reaper advises him to let go of his anger and vengeance, which will bring him unhappiness. Shin cuts him off, asking, “So does not remembering make you happy?” Reaper shuts his mouth.

Shin isn’t sure the idol is the reincarnated king—it seems like he just has a passing feeling—and wants Reaper to confirm whether it is, but Reaper can’t tell just by looking; he needs to touch him.

Then Reaper asks, “Why do you only think he’s been reincarnated as a man?” and indicates the girl group now onstage.

“Is it her?” Shin asks, transfixed at the dance. “Say it is! I think I’m ready to forgive.” Reaper reminds him that he’s been angry for a thousand years, but Shin stares at the pretty girl, saying, “I’m sure he had his reasons.”

Reaper arrives at the hospital, where he joins several of his fellow reapers, which includes a few newbies. One reaper hoobae reminds our Reaper about those souls that are unaccounted for and tells him to turn in his roster by the end of year.

Another reaper brightens when a new reaper approaches them, because she’s pretty and young and makes him grin like a doofus.

Reaper steps aside when his charge arrives, an ER doctor who literally died of overwork while tending to a patient. The doctor, like all newly dead souls, needs a moment to take it in, but when he hears that his patient lived, he says he’s glad.

Afterward, Reaper eats at Subway (et tu, Goblin?!) and looks over the forms he has yet to fill out regarding the two souls that went unaccounted for.

As Eun-tak bikes through the city, she notices every instance of the word “goblin” popping up in ads and signs. She bikes faster and faster, as if to get away.

In the days that follow, she keeps thinking of Shin and their encounters, and the memories put her in a funk. That funk seems to extend to Shin, too, as he thinks of all their encounters as well. There’s a lovely extended moment where their images overlap, as though sharing their gloom, separate but together.

Finally, she sighs to herself, “I don’t know. Leave or don’t, whatever.”

Eun-tak returns to the bookstore and searches for the goblin book where she’d stuck her maple leaf from Quebec. She overhears a man trying to make a return, and sees Deok-hwa with the very book in question. She offers to buy the book from him, claiming the maple leaf inside it, and he says there’s no way to prove it’s hers. He challenges her to identify its origin, and Eun-tak replies that even if she answered, he wouldn’t know whether it’s true.

Deok-hwa declares that the correct answer and gives her the book. When she asks why he was interested in it in the first place, he replies matter-of-factly, “Ah, there’s this goblin I know.” He plays it off like it’s no big deal and everybody knows a goblin or two.

Eyes wide, Eun-tak asks, “Really?” He tsk-tsks her naivety and gives her a quick primer on not falling for the things strangers say. Although when she tries to discount the book price by calling it technically used, Deok-hwa won’t let her get away with it.

Deok-hwa heads home to report to Shin, but stops short to see his grandfather standing there with Reaper. Gulp. He breathes a sigh of relief when he realizes Grandpa doesn’t know anything yet, then totally throws Reaper under the bus by asking who he is and why he’s here.

As Shin comes out of his room, Reaper points a finger at him and mumbles, “I’m his… friend. I came to play.”

Deok-hwa seizes this excuse and runs with it, exclaiming that Reaper must be very close with Uncle, and came to say goodbye. Stone-faced Reaper lifts a hand and waves wanly: “Go well. Be healthy. Never come back.”

But Shin contradicts both of them, happy to tell Reaper to leave his house and never return, since they’re not friends. Deok-hwa protests, and Shin kicks him out too.

So Reaper and Deok-hwa end up huddled on the front stoop, grumbling about Shin’s high-handedness. Reaper turns the stoop icy and warns Deok-hwa that he’d better be right about his grandfather leaving soon: “He’d better, or you’ll be going soon, somewhere.”

Shin pops his head outside to tell Deok-hwa to go to his house to receive his scolding, and crows to Reaper that their score is 1:0. Reaper seethes, then walks right through the door.

Deok-hwa can’t believe Shin would tattle on him to his grandfather and asks to know what Shin said, so he can match their stories. Shin retorts, “Did you match stories with me when you rented out the house?”

Deok-hwa hunkers down on the step rather than going in for his punishment, vowing to stay here and haunt the house as a ghost.

Shin’s in a pretty great mood that night, humming and dancing in the bathroom, but freaks out when he almost steps on a white towel in the hall. Written in blood is “good night” and their new score, 1:1. Muahaha.

Shin literally jumps back, muttering about horse blood. He yells for Reaper to take it away, even apologizing for his earlier comment. Aw, is the war god squeamish?

Chicken shop owner Sunny confronts Eun-tak at work, asking if she’s sleeping in the restaurant. Immediately contrite, Eun-tak apologizes and asks how she knew. Sunny shows her the toothbrush she found, as well as the crumpled confession notes that Eun-tak had written and discarded.

Sunny asks if it’s because of Aunt, then lets the matter go entirely, saying that she should only act if it’s to help. She hands Eun-tak her weekly pay and instructs her to take trips to the sauna to shower.

Eun-tak thanks Sunny, who tells her not to be so grateful over things that are rightfully hers (i.e., her pay). Eun-tak replies that she’s grateful for Sunny’s awesomeness, and Sunny corrects, “That’s money being awesome.”

Shin visits an old bookstore while Eun-tak grills up a batch of squid per Sunny’s request. Lost in her thoughts about Shin, she doesn’t notice the squid catching fire and blows out the flame, then panics and tries to cancel the summons.

On the other hand, Shin smiles to see the smoke around his hands, happy to be transported. He even hurries to strike a cool pose when he appears behind Eun-tak, holding a book and commenting on how much he likes books and art. Ha, I love vain goblin. Your instagram account must be killer.

He can’t even hide that he’s pleased about her summons, so when she informs him that it was only a squid-induced mistake, he gets pissy and huffs that he has to go and pack his bags.

She stops him to ask a question, wanting to know exactly what kind of thing she’s supposed to see “if I’m going to be of use to you.” He supposes she’d lie that she can see it, and she retorts the exact opposite—she’ll say she doesn’t see it even if she does, because he might be nice to her and buy her things and that would be a problem because she reaaaally doesn’t care for him at all. Hmph.

So Shin asks if she doesn’t see anything unusual, maybe something painful. Eun-tak gives him the once-over and says, “Ah, that.” That captures his interest, so when tries to head off, he jumps to do her bidding: “Do you want to eat meat? Is there anything you want?”

She leads him to a meat restaurant, where he grills every last bit of meat for her, asking at every opportunity about the thing she sees. She purposely answers in roundabout ways, and when he gets annoyed, she milks it, asking wide-eyed, “Are you getting testy with me?” He backs down to appease her, that minx.

On to a cafe next, where Eun-tak orders a big fancy juice drink—and then Reaper shows up to ask for the same. Eun-tak hides behind Shin just in case Reaper means to try anything, and watches as the boys bicker. Shin asks if Reaper’s here to kill anybody, and Reaper says defensively, “I’m a regular here!”

Eun-tak asks if she’s the one who’s dying today, acting hurt at the possibility that they ganged up to lure her with meat and ambush her with juice. Lol, she certainly has a flair for the dramatic.

Reaper says he’s actually on her side, and attempts to telepathically tell her, “You see the sword… you see the sword… You will pull out that sword…” But she doesn’t hear his thoughts, and when she asks what it means that he’s on her side, Shin tells her it’s just god talk that she doesn’t need to understand.

After Reaper’s gone, Eun-tak gushes about Reaper’s handsomeness, asking if reapers are picked based on looks, to prompt dead souls to follow readily. Annoyed at her giddiness, Shin asks if he’s also good-looking, and she hesitates before replying, “You’re… just looking.” Haha. Shin snatches away her juice.

Eun-tak points at another customer to distract Shin, and sneaks back her juice while he’s looking away. But something about the ordinary-looking ajusshi catches Shin’s interest, who’s busy texting lovey-dovey messages to his girlfriend.

With a wave of the hand, Shin causes a run-in between the ajusshi and another customer, tangling the woman’s earphone cord in the man’s bag. Eun-tak asks what he’s doing, and Shin says that it’s something that should happen. He refers to his actions as “magic,” just as the man and woman register attraction.

They detangle the cord, at which point Shin flicks his finger to catch the woman’s hair in the man’s shirt button. As the finishing touch, he trips an employee and sends the woman literally falling into the man’s arms. They gaze into each other’s eyes, and when they ask about each other’s relationship statuses, both lie that they’re single.

From across the cafe, Eun-tak cheers along silently, mouthing the words, “Kiss! Kiss!” She asks if Shin is a Cupid, and he explains that every hundred years or so, a few people are reborn with the same faces as their previous lives. He’d recognized the man from his past life; that was a woman he couldn’t let get away.

Eun-tak asks if the man was heroic in the past, and is offended hearing that he was the worst kind of person, arguing that Shin should only help good people. Shin replies that he’s not the guardian spirit for those two—he was acting for the two people who just lost their partners. The man from the cafe is cowardly and the woman is ungrateful, and they’ll become each other’s hell.

Then Eun-tak asks if her life is terrible because she’d sinned in a past life: “Is being born as the goblin’s wife my punishment?”

Shin replies that he doesn’t know about her past life, and reiterates that she’s not the goblin’s wife. She adopts a chipper tone to say her life isn’t actually that bad, since she was loved by her mother, she found an umbrella, and she likes that she met Shin. Then she corrects herself: she liked it, past tense.

Shin reminds her that she hasn’t answered his question yet: Does she see it or not?

She replies, “My mother used to say that a person had to see where they’re lying down in order to stretch out their legs, and know where they’re going when they leave. You understand what I’m saying, right?”

He doesn’t, so she tells him that it means this is where they end. She tells him goodbye and walks away. When she turns back after a few steps, Shin is still there, looking at her.

Later at home, Deok-hwa mentions the possibility of becoming a reaper after he dies, and Shin replies, “You have to have committed a big sin in a past life to become a reaper.” Then he stops himself, realizing that Deok-hwa knows Reaper’s nature.

Deok-hwa points out how his surprise is rather unwarranted, given all the clues and careless talk that tipped him off ages ago, like how Reaper was unfazed when Shin turned the living room humid and foggy, and how both gods tossed around mention of the grim reaper all the time.

That’s when Reaper shows up—just as Deok-hwa is insulting his appearance, heh. Deok-hwa tries to flee, but Reaper blocks his path and asks how he knew he was a reaper. Deok-hwa exclaims, “How can I not know, when you do things like this? You were right over there, and suddenly you’re here.” He makes a good point.

Reaper blames Goblin-who-talks-behind-my-back for outing the truth. Goblin blames him right back, calling him “Reaper-who-doesn’t-even-know-if-he-was-a-murderer-in-a-past-life!” Aw, and then Reaper’s face falls, like someone just killed his hopes and dreams, and then his puppy.

Reaper mumbles that it’s not like Shin’s punishment is because he was innocent. He storms off, and Deok-hwa suggests that Shin really did hurt his feelings. So he drops by a bit later as Reaper’s writing down all the potential sins he could have committed in a past life, though the list just makes Reaper feel worse.

Shin offers his apology and tells him his past life doesn’t matter. “Really?” Reaper asks with interest. “Yes,” Shin answers. “Whatever you were, I dislike you as ever.” At least Reaper laughs?

Deok-hwa tries to downplay his misdeeds to Grandfather by saying that Shin and Reaper got on pretty well, actually. Grandfather says that one is haunted by being unable to recall his past, and the other is haunted by a past he can’t forget, and that they humans are just two passing specks in their long lives.

The next day, Deok-hwa pulls up outside Sunny’s chicken shop and explains to his secretary that he received the building on his eighth birthday. Ha, the secretary is pretty sassy, contradicting Deok-hwa and reminding him that he’s reporting to Grandpa. So while Deok-hwa wants to use the building for cash flow and empty the stores, it looks like the secretary won’t just let him sneak that one by. Deok-hwa tries to get Secretary Kim to lie for him, then pleads for one credit card.

Reaper tries to sneak past Shin to leave the house, but Shin insists on following him, sure that Reaper meant to find Eun-tak rather than come to the supermarket. Reaper insists, “I’m not going to take her away! I’m totally rooting for her right now!”

He explains that if she pulls the sword, Shin dies, and he likes that better than Shin merely leaving the country. So he’s hoping that even if she doesn’t see it now, the miraculous day will come when she will be able to see the sword.

That stokes Shin’s temper, and Shin burns with blue-green flames until Reaper reminds him that they’re in public. Shin calms down, then asks for a promise: “When I leave, you won’t touch her.” Reaper practically gets emotional at the thought of Shin truly leaving, and Shin warns that the moment Reaper tries anything, he’ll be back in a flash.

On his way out of the store, Shin suddenly disappears, leaving Reaper wondering where he went. He ends up outside Aunt’s house, almost like he didn’t expect it himself.

When Eun-tak steps inside the front gate, she hurriedly yanks him around the corner, warning him that he could have been seen. She asks why he came, and he answers that he must have thought of her, and that’s why he must have come to see her. And now that he’s seen her, he’ll be going.

He wonders why she came back when Aunt’s family has disappeared, and she merely says that she had something to retrieve, not divulging that it’s the dried buckwheat flowers he gave her.

Shin finally packs to leave (I was wondering if he’d ever get to it), but pauses to open an old wooden box containing what looks like a scroll.

Reaper walks across a bridge, and is stopped by (young) Samshin Grandma, who urges him to buy a trinket for his girlfriend. He says he doesn’t have one, so she tells him to buy one anyway and make one, holding up a mirror that blinds his eyes for a moment.

When he looks down, it’s the jade ring that catches his eye, glowing extra brightly. (Which, as we know, was the Goryeo queen’s ring.)

He reaches for it as if in a trance, but a hand darts in front and grabs it first. One look at Sunny has Reaper struck dumb, although it seems the reaction is instinctual (rather than because she’s pretty), triggering a tear to fall down his face.

She, on the other hand, clocks the serious look on his face and the tear rolling from his eye, and exclaims in disbelief, “Are you crying?

Reaper’s shocked at his own reaction, but when she asks if he wants the ring, he nods eagerly. Sunny looks him up and down and thinks about it, then declares that she won’t give it up for free, asking for his phone number in exchange.

He says he doesn’t have one, and she wonders if he’s just avoiding giving it to her. Miffed, Sunny takes back her offer and starts to slide the ring on her finger. Reaper hurriedly asks for her number, in order to claim the ring.

Sunny decides introductions are in order, and offers her name and a handshake, accompanied by an expert hair flip. A bit dumbly, Reaper stares at the hand and tucks his own hand safely into his coat, and gets her name wrong.

Left hanging, Sunny turns her handshake into a finger gun and plays it off, and as they stare at each other, Samshin Grandma asks for payment. In the mirror reflection, we see that her true appearance is the elderly grandma from the first episode. Samshin Grandma figures, “It doesn’t matter who pays. You’ll both end up paying a very high fee anyway.” Well that’s ominous. I thought you were a nice fairy godmother!

Shin’s scroll turns out to be an old painting of the Goryeo queen who died just before he did. We flash back to the aftermath of his resurrection, as he’d approached that royal bed containing a wrapped body. Shin had said, “I am too late.”

He had found that painting of the queen among several others, and had broken down in tears. As he had left the palace burning in his wake, he’d walked out clutching only that one scroll.

Now, in the present, Shin sheds a tear looking at her painting. (It’s worth noting that the show has never specified the queen’s relationship to the goblin, but she has been identified as Shin’s sister in promotional material.)

At the chicken shop, Sunny sits lost in thought while Eun-tak cleans, dutifully ignoring the ghost who keeps pestering her. The ghost threatens to kill Eun-tak’s friends if she keeps it up, and turns to start with Sunny.

But Sunny’s fuming over her encounter with Reaper, and breaks into a string of curses, scaring the ghost away. Sunny asks Eun-tak if her looks aren’t up to par lately, anxious because she hasn’t had a call from Reaper yet.

Eun-tak advises her to forget about him, but Sunny can’t, exclaiming that he’s the best-looking man she’s ever seen. Moreover, she’s further upset about the pretty ring she gave up.

Meanwhile, Reaper looks at the number Sunny had scrawled, and the lipstick kiss she’d marked next to it.

Eun-tak arrives at her aunt’s house that night to find movers emptying the furniture. The landlady informs her that Aunt moved out and left all her things behind, and Eun-tak asks plaintively what will happen to her. The landlady tells her to take it up with Aunt.

Eun-tak manages to take back her buckwheat flowers, although a sudden gust of wind blows off most of the dried blooms. Eun-tak plucks a few sprigs to put between the pages of a book, then stores most of her belongings in a public locker.

At school, Eun-tak’s bitchy teacher orders her to empty her pockets and bag, having heard (from a malicious classmate, no doubt) that Eun-tak is sneaking smokes. When she finds no cigarettes and smells nothing on her fingers, she just snaps at her for being so devious as to cover her tracks so well. Orrrrrr…

The teacher says she finds it scary that “kids like you” are good students, having judged her as someone who acts sweet and is secretly conniving, and says it’s people like her who become problems in society. I shudder to think of a society of people this teacher thinks are good.

Reaper joins Shin for a spot of daytime drinking, and when asked why, Shin replies that he was faithful enough when he was a general. That’s news to Reaper, and Shin adds that Reaper wouldn’t have even been able to talk to him in the olden days. Reaper retorts, “You don’t even know what I was.” Of course, neither does Reaper.

Reaper asks if Shin’s all packed and tells him bye. Shin offers, “I’ll call.” Reaper points out, “I don’t have a phone.” Shin: “That’s why I said it.” Oh you two.

They sit there in silence for a while, two lonely gods drinking alone. A bit of time passes, and then suddenly Shin is storming in and out of his front door, over and over, looking dissatisfied. Reaper finally asks what he’s doing, and Shin admits, “I don’t know where she is.” Ah, is he trying to teleport himself everywhere, looking for Eun-tak?

Shin adds, “She isn’t calling me. Because she isn’t calling me, I can’t find her.” He looks weary and sad, and says that nothing he has is good for anything. Reaper figures that’s true, and asks what he’d done in past instances.

“I found her,” he says. “Every time, like this.” Oh, you romantic. So every time we’ve seen you magically show up, you’ve really been trying a dozen times?

Reaper tells him to just call her, but Shin doesn’t know her number. He grabs an umbrella and leaves again, and as thunder crashes in the distance, Reaper figures he’s found her.

Eun-tak sits on the rocks overlooking the sea, talking to her mother to ask how she’s doing, and how heaven is. She starts to cry and admits that she’s not doing so well, and nobody asks how she’s doing. Rain starts to fall in earnest, and she says bitterly that she’s tired of this life that always gets rained on.

Then she senses something and whirls around. There Shin is, holding an umbrella over her head, like magic. He tells her, “It’s because I’m depressed.” He explains that it rains when he’s gloomy, but that it’ll stop soon. She notices the rain stopping, and he says, “It’s because I just now started feeling better.”

It seems she gets his meaning, and she almost smiles. Then Eun-tak says she didn’t summon him here. Shin replies, “I was busy too. Here and there. I had things to do.” Very convincing.

“I’m in trouble,” she says. “Every time it rains, I’m going to be sad thinking that you’re depressed.”

He asks why she’s out here like this, and she answers simply, “Because I’m unhappy.” She likens her unhappiness to a cold that goes away for a time, then comes back to afflict her. She adds that she didn’t say this purposely to “stab” at his conscience, and he tells her not to use that word, since he hates it. Which, of course makes her grin that she chose well.

Shin prods her to continue talking, and she thinks for a moment, then explains how humans have four lives: a life of sowing seeds, a life watering planted seeds, a life harvesting those plants, and a life using those harvested plants.

Shin’s surprised she knows those words, since it’s something only a reaper tells the dead. She reminds him that she’s been the goblin’s bride for 19 years, and has heard a lot from ghosts. She says this is why she feels life is unfair, because her life is stuck in the first two phases.

“Condolences,” is all Shin says. Eun-tak pouts, saying that he could pat her shoulder or stroke her hair. She pulls out her laminated maple leaf and offers it to Shin, who reaches out to pat her hair. He tells her to be well, because he leaves tomorrow.

That hits her, and it looks like she’s holding in her tears. The rain starts to pour again.

That night, Shin and Reaper sit like depressed bumps on a log. A bell rings, and Reaper thinks it’s a text message, only to have Shin correct, “That was the doorbell.”

Simultaneously, they realize how strange it is for the doorbell to ring, and stare at each other in mounting alarm. Shin tells Reaper to check on it and points out the ridiculousness of the grim reaper being afraid, which Reaper says right back to him.

Then the door swings open—and there stands Eun-tak. Reaper is puzzled to see her at his house and asks if she’s sought him out. Note how he’s doing his menacing act again, as though he hadn’t just been cowering to himself on the sofa.

Spooked to see Reaper, Eun-tak says she came to the wrong house and hurries away, only to walk right into Shin. “You told her where you live too?” Reaper asks dryly. Shin waves him away.

Eun-tak explains asking ghosts for the goblin’s address, because she has more to say, and asks about the thing she’s supposed to see. What happens if she sees it? Shin replies, “Why ask? You can’t see it anyway.”

“Who says I can’t?” she returns. “One: If I see it, do we have to marry right away? Two: If I see it, will you give me that 5 million won? Three: If I see it… will you not leave? Don’t go. Just stay here, in Korea.” He doesn’t respond for long moments, then asks, “Do you really see it?”

He asks for proof, and she asks for his answer first. He decides she doesn’t see it, and she says indignantly that she does. Pointing straight at his chest, she declares, “This sword.”

Suddenly, there in front of her pointing finger, the sword materializes, sticking right through Shin’s chest.

COMMENTS

So the big question has been answered: She sees the sword! That certainly leads one to wonder why she wouldn’t have mentioned it before, since it hardly seems like the thing to ignore (or to need clarification on being able to see), but I’ll assume she had her reasons for not making a fuss over it and bask for a moment in the realization.

I am super curious as to the mechanics of the whole sword-impalement and sword-pulling scenario, because it sure looked like Shin was in pain in some earlier flashbacks, when he’d tried to remove the sword himself. Are we to assume that this whole time, he’s had the sword stuck in him and the show just chose not to show it? Does he see the sword at all times, and it’s only that everybody else can’t? If so, shouldn’t he be in constant pain? Are there only specific times when the pain happens? And if he’s unable to remove the sword, how was he able to wield it earlier in order to split the car? I reaaaally hope these are all issues that are meant to be mysterious now and answered later, because I’m banking a lot on the mythology making sense and fitting together logically, and it’ll frustrate me if the rules go all willy-nilly.

I thought this episode was rather long, not just in running time but in the lingering, meandering atmosphere, and there was a lot of heel-dragging in the plot department. Don’t get me wrong: All the character stuff was great, and I for sure wanted to see Shin stick around. But I got awfully tired of hearing him talk about leaving a gazillion times and never actually doing it, and as I don’t quite understand why it is that he must leave—other than that it’s his tradition, which is just a fancy way to say habit—his moping seemed a bit unnecessary.

But it was beautiful moping, and it’s the show’s melancholy mood that draws me in so effectively—and not just regarding Shin, but with Eun-tak and Reaper as well. I do think this director is a bit overly fond of lingering on every moment—like every single beat is meant to be polished to perfection—but there are times when that care for tone and mood is very much appreciated, because it’s something that you can’t quite create purely in writing or performance. I’m thinking of the heads-resting-on-arms mutual moping segment, or the scenes with quiet, morose brooding.

I loved watching Shin feeling his affections grow for Eun-tak and having him react as though it were a sad thing, rather than anything to enjoy or celebrate, because either she’s not his bride and deserves to live a normal human life, or she is his bride and he’ll be dying now, see ya, buh-bye. It’s the latter conflict that has me on tenterhooks to watch the next episode, because it’s a gripping dilemma, but today it was mostly about him feeling like this whole Eun-tak thing was pointless and better left alone, and it was a lovely way to demonstrate that with the rain.

I also really dug Eun-tak’s response to Shin’s treatment of her, because without knowing what’s driving him, she only knows that he kind of runs warm and cool, and that he’s never given her real reason to hope or expect anything. It makes sense that a lonely 19-year-old who hasn’t been loved in years would need to protect her feelings and try to keep her crush contained, because it’s far more likely that it’s only in her mind than that it’s returned. And I enjoyed that her inner conflict came out as teenage snarkiness, because her passive-aggressive sniping was adorable in a really familiar and immature way.

But far and away, I’m really loving the Reaper-Goblin duo, because no matter how much they bicker and say they hate each other, they’re clearly growing on each other, and it soothes my heart to know that both poor, sad souls have a friend(frenemy) who understands a bit of what it feels like to be tragic and immortal. I mean, sure Reaper wishes Goblin would die, and Goblin says he hates Reaper in every lifetime, but it took about two minutes after actually hurting his feelings to go and make up. Their dry, deadpan interplay is my favorite new thing, and I never want it to end.

I love love love this drama!! No... I'm obsessed. I'm utterly obsessed with this drama! But there's one thing that keeps on bothering me. The fact that Eun Tak's is a high schooler. I was VERY uncomfortable watching her talking about raising kids with the goblin in the preview still dressed in her high school uniform. Kinda creeps me out. This has nothing to do with the age gap between KGE and GY. It's her character. Do something about this KES. Time jump or anything.

OBSESSION is the right word. I've watched every episode thrice. This show is the best! and yeah the preview for episode creeped me out as well... i dont if these lines even suit KGE..i mean with her acting so cutesy and child-like..what was that about honeymoon and raising kids..kinda weird..

regardless.. enormous hunger for more of Goblin and Reaper and ofcourse the The Grim Romance
!!

Calling it: Sunny is the past Goryeo Queen (aka the Goblin's sister played by Kim So-hyun) and the Grim Reaper was the king who ordered the Goblin and his family's death! It would explain the ring scene! That was the Grim Reaper's massive sin!

Me too! Can't wait to see how the revenge will play between these two, now they almost love each other :)

Yep, agree. Was looking for this hypothesis.

0

Had the same exact thought. Reaper is the old king. I wonder what happens when Reapers get their memories back?

0

This makes sense, as their names are Kim Sun and Wang Yeo.

0

i sort of agree but it could also be the opposite. lee dongwook being queen and yoo inna being king.. the queen cried before dying while looking at the ring. and the lee dongwook's line “Why do you only think he’s been reincarnated as a man?".. but what great sin did the queen do? it would make more sense for the king to become a grim reaper because of the sins he did. also apparently lee dongwook's character name is wangyo and yoo inna's kim sun which would fit as kim shin's sister..

I loved the mention of honeymoon and raising kids, as with the Bride title, you expect them to actually get married and proceed to have a family. When you are truly in love, that is really what a woman wants: to have that man for your own and have his children. At least, that is how I saw it! But I will admit, I am having an issue with the age difference since she's still in school. It would have been better if she was at least in college already.

Yeah...I'm always a bit squicked out when an immortal being falls for a high schooler (even when said immortal being is passing as a high schooler themselves, eg. Twilight).

But then I think that if an age gap that spans centuries is ok, then what's a few years either way...

I don't watch previews but omg that sounds creepy. Really creepy.

I'm also having issues with the character's age still. It's a pity because every other aspect is hitting the right beats for me even with some technical/worldbuilding issues.

I don't know what to do with the age thing. Ignore it? That doesn't seem right. But at this point we do not appear to be getting a time skip so I don't know how Kim Eun-sook could un-creepify this. I don't know what she was thinking making Eun-tak a high schooler, especially if there is not gonna be any time jump. I would not have minded if they MET when she was in high school but the real romance didn't start until later, but at this point it looks like she will be 19 throughout the show's run. Eugh.

There was always going to be a huge age gap between the characters so I don't understand why KES chose to make Eun Tak a high schooler.

She could easily have been a college student and the school scenes wouldn't change much or she could have just started her first real job and getting the typical Korean newbie treatment from her co-workers.

Whenever I watch a KES drama there's always something that makes me uncomfortable.

I agree about the age issue. I don't like her being in high school, because in real life that would be weird for a 30 something man dating a 19 year old. It would have been better if she was in college I think. I didn't think mentioning having kids was weird, though, as when you fall in love with someone you want to get married and have children together. I think she is acting the typical woman with romantic notions---getting married, living in that nice big house and having children. In fact, I was more upset they didn't have the Goblin respond more positively to that comment, because he said he did not have any other brides before. Having lived so long without a real bride or children, you'd think he'd suddenly want that. Or, of course, he's thinking he won't be able to truly have that and feel sorry for himself (but they didn't even focus on that mindset). If I was the bride, I'd be assuming a wedding ceremony would be started already!

My two cents about the age gap: it is a bit uncomfortable when you think of it in as a romance between a high schooler and a 30+ y/o man (standing side by side they just look like an uncle and his niece LOL) but my feeling at this point is that he grows to care for her as a guardian, he sees her as his and there is a bond they can't deny, but it's more protective and possessive than romantic (at least until she's older!).
If we're doing Twilight references, I'd say it's more Jacob and Renesmee xD

As for mentioning kids and honeymoons, I'm guilty of that hahaha I'd be like, I want three kids! I want to go to Japan! kind of whimsical thinking :P (probably chasing my bf off in the process!)

What I felt is more uncomfortable is that in the Goryeo era...eun tak would be married already....Prolly why kim shin doesn't find this weird....but it is uncomfortable...especially her talking about kidss...and them walking intoaround candlelit bedrooms

That is true. In the past, women would be married very young (like as soon as they hit puberty or even before--which is totally wrong), and maybe that is why the Goblin thinks nothing of falling in love with a 19 year old (even though his own body is 30 something). Of course, from our modern day perspective that age difference is rather gross (and a bit upsetting to women in general, since it makes older women seem useless if men only want the very young). But I think talking about marriage and kids is totally normal for any young woman, since girls often dream about when they will get married and to whom. They don't think so much about the seriousness of it, but just the romantic side to it. I personally thought they'd jump ahead a year or two with her character before the Bride title came out and then she'd get married to him. I really so want to see them get married and perhaps there is some way she can reverse the curse and he won't have to die.

Thank u for the recaps!! Love Goblin so much!!

Now.. 19 yrs old in korean means 18 yrs old in other countries.. Legally she's an adult. in my country, girls aged 16 above can get married, and of coz with the girl's consent.
Aside from that, when u're in love, isn't it natural to be dreaming of having kids and whatnot? I don't find it creepy coz at that age i dreamt of getting married and having kids with my bf...
Why would it be creepy?
Just saying..

I agree with you on this. It's not creepy at all for a young woman to dream about getting married and having kids. In fact, when you are in love, and they are making her character seem very much in love at this point, you want to be with that man forever and you DO want his kids. That is what love does to you! You don't really think so much about yourself, aside from staying with that other person. I really hope they get to have a wedding in this drama and find a way to break the curse so they can stay together and have those kids in the future. :)

I so wish that they go through a time gap. It is so awkward to see them together and like everyone said, it's not KGE or their real age difference but the fact the KGE is so believable as a high schooler that he does look like a legit ahjussi in front of her. I'm sure if we get a time gap then KGE would act as someone older and mature and then their chemistry would be believable.

I think it probably wouldn't be as troubling if they got her out of that damn school uniform. I keep thinking when I see her, "again, with the uniform!" 95% time she has it on, making her all the more youthful while the Goblin a sugar daddy. At the very least if they just gave her a new wardrobe, we could look slightly past it.

I'm one of those viewers that is not bothered by the age difference. Maybe because I'm in the US and it's not uncommon for 18 year olds to be dating whoever they want? Large age gap between couples might generate some looks, but in the end, it's the couple's choice.

But still, I'm curious as to whether or not this age gap problem is a recent development. Do people remember the drama Sweet 18? That was a beloved show way back when - the girl was 18 when she married someone 10 years older. And they did more than just kiss in that drama! What's so different about this age gap?

I enjoy watching Eun Tak and Goblin's relationship develop, and even though the love type of chemistry is not all there yet, I love the relationship that they do have now. And I love their relationship more and more as they get to know each other. Shouldn't love come after getting to know each other? That's what I'm seeing with the OTP right now, and to me, it's more realistic than most kdramas that go strong with the love and chemistry right off the bat and expect viewers to believe that the OTP already want to be together after a few haphazard meetings. Nothing wrong with either if the drama is well-done, and this drama is seriously well done!

I'm gunna agree too with the age gap, especially because you can tell she's not mature and still a high schooler - i wouldn't have minded if she was more mature - but clearly she's just a kid who hasn't past her own maturity level. Plus, i'm curious at why they didn't make her a college student, it would've made more sense - unless they will do a time jump later (since we're only at ep 3). Maybe he disappears and he comes back when she's older. mmm, who knows.

the age gap doesn't bother me as much as eun-tak maturity. at least bella in twilight was not portrayed as some bubbly high schooler, she's sulky and dark. i could even enjoy romance for Hong and Hye-jung in Doctors even when she's still in high school, cause there is an adult vibe coming from her character. but eun-tak? she just a regular teenager. their romance is not convincing enough. and this is supposed to be like "the greatest romance of all" cause it has passed centuries and all.

I am trying to overlooked it because she is a senior. We never think about it for vampires falling for high school girls. I think that the episode was the right length but that can be me wanting to see more of the goblin. I think he keeps keeps saying he is leaving to convince him self to go because he likes her and does not want to burden her with killing him. Things changed when she said goodbye and then turned around he was still there not like last time. Also when the nephew was talking to grandfather about the roommates he was doing the standing chair punishment

I agree the age thing is creepy. Like almost statutory rape creepy. It occurred to me that maybe these dramas are written to appeal to the thirty something male audience as well as the rom com enthusiast. I guess 900 years ago 19 years old females were considered fair game, although it has been mentioned a few times that she is very young. I see her appeal but as lovely as she is I am thinking that a worldly, well read, art and music loving guy would want a more womanly woman. I guess virginity has its charms and she is adorable. That said, when are they going shopping? That coat of hers is pretty shabby and that school girl bow tie has got to go. Her character has to be developed, she's got a brain right? She wants to go to college right? Show the curiosity that she displayed in Canada grow into something deeper. The coquette only goes so far.

Apparently "Goblin" doesn't fully convey Gong Yoo's sexiness.

But I prefer Goblin myself! Much more interesting and atmospheric. 'Guardian' sounds like a medical kdrama about hospice workers.

Anyone else wonder what's Gong Yoo's 'job' as a supernatural in this show? The reapers are so busy, and Lee El is already doing guardian angel work. So far Shin just lounges in gardens and reads books in oversized sweaters while occasionally doing some pro-bono altruistic enchantments? How is he not bored out of his mind after 900 years?

I don't think the Goblin has a "job" as a supernatural. He just exists because immortality is supposed to be his punishment/reward. Not sure why the gods gave him all those cool powers though, when they could have just made him immortal.

Exactly my thoughts. I really like the directing in general but there are certain shots that just linger... and linger... and linger. I am glad I'm not the only one who felt the episode flow was a little too slow! I get that the lingering shots were also an opportunity for the director to show off and there was some neat framing going on for the scene of laying their heads on their arms, but just in general throughout the episode, there was a sense at which some of the conversations between Eun Tak and Goblin were rather repetitive.

Me too! Lee El's character is so interesting. What is she exactly? And is Sunny the Queen and Grim the King? Or the other way around? Since the King and Queen can reincarnate in opposing sex anyways. I'm waiting to see more of them since they said their love story is sexy, mysterious yet delicate different from the Goblin and Eun Tak's love story. The Goblin also said that a human becomes a grim reaper if they committed a great sin in their past life and the reason why Grim can't remember his past life is probably because he's the King or the Queen. What's his name anyways? Goblin is Kim Shin, how about reaper? Did I miss it or they haven't revealed his name yet?

The Grim Reaper's name is Wang Yeo which most likely means that he was the king in Goryeo times as the Wang household ruled Goryeo (remember Scalet Heart:Ryeo). As far as I know Sunny's real name is Kim Sun, which could mean that she was the sister of the Goblin, Kim Shin and the queen in the past who was one of the first family members to have been killed among the Goblin Kim Shin's family. And of course the ring connection, and the Grim Reaper's crying and the little hints how the Grim Reaper could have been the King in his previous life and he must have committed a huge sin. Of course them being the king and the queen is just a guess, just a theory, but we will see.

And did anyone else catch the part where sunny was like "it felt like the ring was(made?) for me" when she's talking to eun tak in the chicken restaurant. I don't know if it was just a random dialogue thrown in or if it's actually a hint that she is the reincarnation of the queen...

The biggest hint for me was when the Goblin said he's a noble and a general before and he was amused at the thought that the grim reaper can't be noble enough to talk to him in his past life. When the Grim Reaper scoffs he asked, "So what are you? A king in your past life?".

We have the same theory that Grim was the king and that Sunny was the queen (or the other way around). How painful their relationship with Shin must be if this was really the case.

I think that the Grim Reaper might've been the king in his past life. That's why Lee El's character is talking about 'making him pay heavily' and why that involves the same ring from the past.
They also hinted at this in the dining hall scene where Gong Yoo talks about being a general and the Grim Reaper jokes about being a King in his past life.
Gong Yoo was also talking about being ready to forgive the King finally. It would make really change up their relationship dynamic for sure.

I wonder if she's an ogushin (or Bari herself). Since she seems to have taken an interest in Eun Tak, who is also abandoned. And she seems mad at Grim, which if he's really the King, would make sense since in the first ep, Shin's second in command asked the king if he didn't fear heaven. If she were the Ogushin, then it's probable that Grim wouldn't be able to recognize her since she's a goddess.

If Grim's the King, it would also make sense since he ordered the deaths in the first place. Since he mocked that the gods don't listen to the people, it would be probable that he got sentenced to being a reaper. I know that Shin was imagining someone who's 17 years old, but he forgot that when he resurrected, it had been years later already (since the Eunuch was shown to have aged into an old man), so the king probably died at a more mature age (and they only showed a portrait of the queen, but not of the king). If he's the king, maybe he cried not because he knows Sunny, but because of the ring - which belonged to the queen.

Also, if he's both the reaper AND the king, then is it possible that Shin's death scene will be recreated for his final (and imminent) modern death? I could definitely imagine Eun Tak telling Shin that she'll be right behind him.

1) This drama really delivers. This drama has so much CHARISMA!2) I ship the main couple so much. Loved them since EP 1
3) Why do I think that Gong Yoo had more chemistry with Kim Go Eun than with Yoon Eun Hye? ( I'll prolly received some backlash on this statement.)
4) Gong Yoo is 16 years older than me and yet..I AM SO SMITTEN.5) I don't know but what if Deok Hwa developed some feelings for Eun Tak?

It's not a father-daughter vibe
He's 935 years old
She's 19 years old
It's an ancestor with his grand grand grand x1xxx grandchild

Just kidding.
But if he "is" in mid 30s = 35-37 years old.
So the gap is less than 19 years old. So, ....samchon maybe? >_<

But, I love how they chemistry develops well. At their first meeting, it seemed only one side of curiosity and interest (Kim Shin), while Eun-Tak looked annoyed by Ahjussi "Ghost". At that time, she maybe thought that Kim Shin was a ghost because of the sword :D

Charisma overload! I love their kind of chemistry. Clearly bound by loneliness. It's more spiritual and platonic which I find rather interesting and unique. I hardly allow myself to get invested in the typical drama land OTP but this intrigues me. It's hard to explain.

Goblin has been lonely for a long time so he is numb, grumpy and reserved.
Our young Eun Tak expresses her girly fantasies freely without reservation and I think I kind of understand why she is a high school age. Her idea of marriage is far from reality. Pretty much clueless.
I love her character because as fictional as she is I can relate to her loneliness. She talks nonstop because she finally found someone to vent her frustrations to.

I wish this a movie. The longer it takes the more chance of it getting messy.

Impressive, but I think Goblin was able to reach 12% easily, because the two daily dramas airing at the same time (Shining Eun-soo on KBS1, Golden Pouch on MBC) got preempted for news because of Park's impeachment, while Solomon's Perjury got delayed. Let's see over the next few episodes if Goblin will sustain that momentum.

Totally rooting for it to hit 20%. If there is anyone who can do this it would be Kim Eun-sook. Like her or not she is the reigning queen of hit dramas. She is going to set the record in both public channels and cable channels.

I'm happy for the cast, some of them are underrated and needs the recognition they deserve. Sometimes it takes a hit drama for that to happen. That's how drama land rolls.

This drama is awesome! I hope it keeps delivering every week. After watching episode 3, I'm speculating that the grim reaper might be the young king. We were never shown what happened to him, so he could have died in his 30s (which might be common in that era?). And the way he reacted to that ring! Maybe he remembers giving it to goblin's sister. I don't know I could be completely wrong but something feels funny.

@end.. "I didn’t see the details but i think he summoned a different sword." No, I don't think so. We've seen him summon that sword to use before. When he split that ship in two remember. And having gotten a good look then I'm fairly certain it was the same sword. Plus an ordinary sword wouldn't have those blue-green flames right? My theory is that he can indeed summon and use his sword... THE sword. So the removing it to use is different from the REMOVING that his bride is supposed to do to end his curse. Or maybe it stays stuck in him even while he's using it. It's a magic sword, it can be in two places at once. Like spooky action at a distance. (I know that's the wrong term to use, I couldn't think of a better one and the words kinda fit) God knows the idea can't be more illogical than stretchy ponds.

The sword question had me perplexed since ep 1 wherein he cuts the boat in his anger over the child's bullies. Rather than he summoning another sword, i think the best explanation is that he somehow conjured up the sword with energy, as the sword dissapears into wisps after the act.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I am not too worried about it. The nice thing about writing a fantasy god is that you can't really paint yourself in a corner since a god can do anything hence every explanation is possible. Like here for instance, the sword could still be stuck to his chest and he just siphons off some of it's energy and projects that energy into a copy of the sword that he can use. Problem solved.

0

Required fields are marked *

I actually believe ita a different sword he is summoning. The sword embedded in his heart has cloth wrapped on its handle, filled with blood. The sword he summoned in ep 1 (boat scene) had a black handle with no cloth. I almost think thats the same sword used here when he split the car.

0

Required fields are marked *

Well I'm fairly certain they both have the same engraving on the hilt. The embedded one is like the aged, rusty version, and the one he uses is the well maintained version he would have used in battle. So I guess its something like the ghost of sword(s?) past?

It's a different sword. Every depiction of a goblin character include them carrying some sort of weapon. Maybe because goblin is famous for their metalwork. So, imo, it's a different sword, a part of him being a goblin.

I'm totally on board with the theory that Grim and Sunny are the king and queen. I'm less on board with the idea that Grim might be the queen. Sure, you can't rule out the possibility, but odds are on king. Because you had to have committed great sins to become a reaper right? Of the royal couple, if anyone was a sinner, that was clearly the king. He's the one who ordered the deaths of his general's family members, including his own wife, just to make a point. Worse, he didn't even accuse the general of being a traitor, simply of being more popular and a threat to the throne. And in the historical scenes where Shin saw the King's body prepped for a funeral, judging from the paintings he (the king) left behind, it's clear he missed his late wife and probably regretted killing her. So it would make sense if some part of him recognises her now and sheds tears in response.

In response to your question about him "pulling" the sword out... He's not really pulling it out. I think it's just one of his powers. In the first episode remember when the goblin sliced the boat in half right after he became a goblin, he used the sword? It's just a physical extension of one of his powers.

0

Required fields are marked *

Agreed, I don't think he's "pulling" the sword out in the sense of permanently removing it. He can summon it to use it, but it's always with/in him otherwise. And from what Deok Hwa's grandfather said in the first episode—that when Shin is suffering from the sword he wishes Shin would find his bride and when he's not he wishes Shin would keep living—it seems like there are particular times when Shin is in pain from the sword.

0

Required fields are marked *

That made sense. I'm waiting for the explanation from future episode. Maybe it was just symbolical that it was stabbed thru his chest. The sword and Goblin is one. So he can use it as he pleases. So only the bride can break him free from it.

Haha also for that horse blood thing... I don't think it's because goblins are squeamish, but I'm pretty sure that's a tongue in cheek reference to Korean folklore. I'm not Korean myself, so I wouldn't know, but I did do a quick Google search of "horse blood goblin", and there's a Korean tale about a lady spreading horse blood and a goblin running away. Just more silly cultural references for our two immortal beings to use to get back at each other (first, the goblin underwear song, now the goblin folklore). I feel like I'm becoming so cultured! Haha.

the horseblood scene is probably in reference to how Korean goblins are afraid of blood:

"Most Korean legends have Dokkaebi in the stories. They are about Dokkaebi playing pranks on mortals or punishing them because of their evil deeds. One of them is about an old man who lived alone in a mountain when a Dokkaebi visited his house. With surprise, the kind old man gave the Dokkaebi an alcoholic beverage and they become friends. The Dokkaebi visited the old man often and they had long conversations together, but one day, the man took a walk by himself in the woods near the river and discovered that his reflection looked like the Dokkaebi. With fear, he realized that he was gradually becoming that creature. The man made a plan to prevent himself from becoming a Dokkaebi and invited the creature to his house. He asked, "What are you most afraid of?" and the Dokkaebi answered, "I'm afraid of blood. What are you afraid of?" The man pretended to be frightened and said, "I'm afraid of money. That's why I live in the mountains by myself." The next day, the old man killed a cow and poured its blood all over his house. The Dokkaebi, with shock and great anger, ran away and said, "I'll be back with your greatest fear!" The next day, the Dokkaebi brought bags of money and threw it to the old man. After that, Dokkaebi never came back and the old man became the richest person in the town." - Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dokkaebi

Separate swords:
He can summon a magic physical sword to use just like he can summon gold bars.
The immaterial(?) metaphorical sword is always stuck in him but we usually can't see it because it would be distracting as heck and the special effects to show it would cost too much. There doesn't have to be a good in-story reason for it to normally be invisible, except that it could cause a fuss in the supermarket.
The two swords look the same because both are modeled on his original battle sword, which was very very important to him (phallic symbol, remember). Also, having just one sword saves the prop dept a little.

I think its a different sword, tbh. His sword handle has a blood washed cloth wrapped around it (this is thr one embedded in his body), the sword he used for both the boat and car scene had a black handle, no cloth.

Maybe her big sin was betraying her king. Which isn't too far fetched. Shin was punished for killing, which for him, as a general was part and parcel of war. So what is sinful and what is not, is open to interpretation. But I mostly say this cause I would really like the gender switch.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think the Reaper has to be the King because he has to have committed a great wrong and sister died too soon.

0

Required fields are marked *

I also thought of the reincarnated king and queen is reversed, the king is sunny - lonely and no one is around him and the reaper is the queen because not remembering her betrayal and because the ring must mean a lot to her - the reaper cried once he spotted it (cause reaper is queen). But as goblin said to become a reaper, you must have millions of sin (or heavy sin). Hearing that, threw out my reversed reincarnated theory, so now I'm back to king is reaper and queen is sunny.

0

Required fields are marked *

wow that will be good if Reaper is actually the queen because remember all victim who dead were given the tea to forget what happen to them so the same thing could happen to reaper, he drank that same tea to forget what happen to him (as queen) in the past. but as the big sin he had to commit in the past in order to be reaper I still can't find a good reason.

0

Required fields are marked *

In my opinion, Reaper is the reincarnated king and Sunny was his queen. I think comments about reincarnated in opposite gender was just things to make that particular scene have comedic vibe 'cause after that comment, girl group was shown and Goblin happily said that he's ready to forgive the king if the girl on TV was his reincarnation and transfixed by the girls dance

This drama is a total stellar and the biggest winner of this episode, for me, is no other that lets-bicker-to-eternity partners Goblin and Grim Reaper. I had big laughs over their telepathic convo on how Eun-tak supposed to respond to their saving. I realised I spent the whole episode waiting for their next scene together and I was not disappointed. Their coffee shop scene, Grim reaper's 'I am your best friend" bust, the shopping scene and that cute Grim Reaper sits idly watching the sad Goblin came in and out of the door to find his bride. So...

Grim reaper = idiot murderous king?
Sunny = poor sacrificial lamb queen?

And they aren't even being subtle about it. lol now that I think about it, LDW's character is named WANG yeo, right? This whole episode felt like a big giant set up, complete with massive winks. "I don't care who you were in the past life." "Who do you think you are? A king?" "You could have been a murderer in the past life" etc etc. Plus the sexy girl reaper was totally a court lady standing behind the king during the Goryo scenes.

All this leads to a question about the show's basic cosmology though. We know from ep. 1-2 that..

1. Normal folks gets to drink the tea of oblivion, and move on by forgetting their past lives
2. Those who have committed sins (i.e. asshole who ran over Mom) are punished with remembrance and guilt. Hence Goblin's eternal consciousness is framed as the ultimate divine retribution.

so if that's the case, why is LDW/king/grim reaper struck down with amnesia and how is it severe punishment? One can't exactly be hurt by what one doesn't know. I find it sloppy writing that the character goes about his duty for centuries like a well-tuned machine, and in all this time never had an existential crisis until Goblin brought up the whole "grim reapers lead terrible past lives" thing.

Another world building / cosmology issue:

Why is OTP going through separation drama? It's not like this is the childhood portion of an early 2000s drama, where the chaebol heir is despatched overseas for school.

I thought the whole point is that Eun Taek can summon Goblin whenever/where-ever she wants, and that portals make international travel super easy. Like Goblin can be in Antarctica for all we know, and she just needs to blow out a flaming octopus or follow him out a door...?

Exactly!! I read that theory in Tumblr after watching episode 3 and I have to agree that it is very plausible. Maybe the writer will go for Dramatic Irony and we will just have to be yelling at our screens for our characters to notice.I don't mind that it is that obvious because then I will get to see the characters react to the truth once it slowly begins to be revealed to them.

At first I thought maybe it was backwards, Reaper= queen, Sunny= king but it't the whole "great sin" that stops me from continuing this theory.
Unless....we have only seen Shin's pov of the past. What if the queen was actually the evil one. What if she (along with the eunuch) was the one controlling the king and did this elaborate scheme to kill Shin because she was afraid of his growing power with the people but the plan somehow backfired on her and ended up dying. Idk, that's the only way it would fit for the reaper to be the queen, because otherwise I don't see what other great sin she could have committed.
After so many dramas playing with my head and my heart, I've become weary of believing all clues being so nicely laid out for me.

OMG! That could be possible. I was pretty sold on reaper=king because the show nicely leads the audience to that conclusion (because of the supposedly big sin one has to commit), but it would be such a twist. Although, the king would still be at fault since, even though he was manipulated, it was still his command that bring all of those innocent people to death.

The tears that reaper shed, may either be instinctive tears because the queen's soul remembering the king's betrayal; or it could be the tears of regret of the by the king and him missing his wife. I would be so hurt (and Shin as well) if it turned out that his betrayed him and was conniving with that evil eunuch. However, I'm excites as well for him to meet Sunny and what kind of relationship may blossom. Would he sense that she's his sister or something?

P.S if reaper touches Sunny's hand and got a glimpse of her past life, would he be recovering from his amnesia as well?

Sunny might not be the whole innocent 'sacrificial lamb queen'. The granny that led them to the jade ring clearly stated that both of them will pay a heavy price. I believe this means that they would pay for their past lives' sins. This would mean that Shin's sister might not be as innocent as we thought she was. Maybe she was involved in manipulating the king at one point? In court no matter what culture, it's not unusual for one to throw away their family in order to further their own ambitions after having a taste of power.

Also with the Reaper; I think there is intended irony there. Furthermore, I also think that he's probably been mulling over his terrible sins before he even met Shin. His character compared to other reapers is actually quite down and sad. It's further emphasized when we saw more of them today.

@Domnique Lola I know shin's sister could have been evil herself, but remember how shin got struck by God's punishment and later got stabbed by the sword, notwithstanding the fact that he had to let go of his families and friends at the cost of what, taking parts in wars? So I don't get why he even has to repent, when he's the one who had to take the beating from the king? So, even if the sister did something wrong, the king's sins are at much higher level, since he knowingly and directly destroyed all of shin's relatives. So, imo, reaper 'is' the king, and that's why he was crying unknown to himself, when he met sunny.
I also remember how sunny said, the name is just for show, and before when she went to the fortuneteller, she said she's too old or something, I don't remember correctly. So clearly there's something more than what's in surface right now.
And PS: The cup theory seems totally plausible!

I might have remembered wrongly too, but in ep 1 there was a voice over basically saying even though Shin was set up and betrayed by the king, he was also a war general who has killed many. The many people whom he killed were also "protected" by the "gods" (I guess ancestors?). Therefore his part of living an eternal life while remembering everything is his punishment from all of the killings he's done.

I think separation drama for the OTP is more like Shin wanting to take the noble idiocy route because he is truly in love with ET and is afraid she will be hurt when she finds out the true duty of being a goblin's bride...

Just like the Arang and the Magistrate's Grim Reapers, they were souls with great sins, but to serve as one they have to wipe out their memory. If I recall, the guy who was punished by not drinking the memory-eraser tea was not remorseful of his actions, thus he has to be stuck remembering his sins in his past life. It could apply to Kim Shin as well, he was a well-loved hero, but he was also a general who killed so many people in his lifetime. He feels like he's wronged and wants revenge, but he also doesn't see that he's got blood in his hands thus being given the curse of immortality.

Thank you! There is more than one type of chemistry. They are not at the stage where we would expect anything romantic.
They are both doing a pretty good job here.

But the couple is everything that makes you watch the drama again and again, I've already watched the first two episodes several times lol. Don't know, but I'm one of those people who crave more for bickering and word plays, rather than couples high on sexual tension and sorts. So while people are more on the goblin and reaper ship, here I am in the minority of goblin and eun tak ship lol. I can watch them go on and on about everything useless, and still wont' get bored, happily.

I do see chemistry in them, though more like silent and mutual attraction towards each other. Gong Yoo's eyes say everything unsaid. :S

THIS!! I definitely love the harmless and kinda funny bickering between them. It's true that it's more like of a warm and fuzzy chemistry between them; which, in my opinion, is better than sexual chemistry. You need foundation for quality relationships, and they're doing exactly that by taking things slow. If it's founded on lust, it'll break down easily. Like what they always say, it is the anticapation of the kiss than the kiss itself that gives you butterflies.

Plus, I love how they both just want to protect each other. Especially when Eun Tak covered Shin's eyes the they all meet reaper in the playground for the first time. Which is why I really want Shin to tell her what happens when the sword is pulled out, if anything, just to see how she reacts. I don't know what to think anymore, does he or does he not want to die? I know I don't.

Required fields are marked *

Agreed! This kind of chemistry is what I need. People are creeped out by it but I don't see what's so creepy. They haven't kissed or did something weird. It's just meaningful and light; like they want to protect each other and be happy.

(I'm happy too bc I thought for a long time now that I'm the only person that liked the leads together. Their acting is the bomb too.)

That kpop scene with P101 and iKON was hilarious. I love how Shin even did the finger in the air move of 'Pick Me'. Ah! I love this show.

I also agree on how the opening scene was hilarious! How Reaper looked so smug and enjoyed Goblin's stuttering before Eun Tak.

I completely agree. As much as I love kdramas for their OTPs, this drama is NOT SELLING IT TO ME. I am more on board with reaper/sunny after only one scene and goblin/reaper than the many scenes with goblin/eun tak. I think it may be the age difference and the father/daughter vibes I get from them. It's unfortunate too because i REALLY WANT to ship them but I can't. At least the writer was decent enough to include a secondary couple to balance out the bland that is the goblin/eun tak.

What is creepy here ..I am still trying to fathom. KGE is not underage and in the drama she is 18.. in American films actresses do all sort of things before they reach that age..Most importantly..KGE is 24yrs old in real life, and the drama would show couple of phases in their storyline, I still believe that. One thing's for sure, either you love the romance or you not, also I doubt whether it has much to do with our actress preferences or not, since many have shown cold shoulders to KGE. Anyway, I belong to old school, and I loved Jane eyre while growing up, so I don't see any creepy factor here. Also, more of my friends are not my age, either young or old , so isn't the mentality more important on the case of how we connect with people? Considering how shin has the more grave talks with eun tak, which is surprising right , as he is living with an age old grim reaper, while most they do is tease and taunt. I don't think that age matters, necessarily. And anyway, no matter how repetitive the accusation is getting, I would love the drama no less. And no you don't sound creepy at all :P

I also don't find the pairing creepy, she's 19 years old! She's rightful to be married if she gives consent. In where I live, some girls I know decide to be married in that age. It's legally acceptable. Is it because she's still a highschooler? Her character is much wiser than some female leads in other dramas.

Just sayin'.

What I find interesting is some people thought KSH as the queen was Goblin's lover. She's underage in real life (and most likely in the drama as well, people married as teenagers).

Required fields are marked *

I am also not creeper out by their relationship. First, I don't think that there is any sort of sexual attraction to it yet. Second, remember, Eun Tak has grown up in a very different world from most people. She has always been able to see ghost, she has always known whether was the Goblin's Bride, and she has been hiding from a Grim Reaper for more than 10 years. She has probably never considered that she would have a normal relationship. If she had accepted from a long time ago that she was supposed to marry a goblin it would be natural to ask about the nature of that marriage. Third, I think that they are attracted to each other more right now because of the rapport and understanding they seem to instinctively have. Finally, when the romance actually does enter into the sexual attraction phase, I still won't have a problem because Eun Tak would be of a legal age where I live and Shin is not taking advantage of her in any way.

Not complaining about the length on this episode since I never really felt it but I am worried though if they can sustain it for the whole drama. Reply 1988 had no problem with it because it was such a big ensemble cast that there is always enough story to go around with the different families. With Goblin though, they only have the standard main leads, second leads and a few sidekicks to work with.

Might be an unpopular opinion here but totally not invested in the Goblin - Bride romance. I think Gong Yoo and KGE lacks chemistry and she tends to overact the cute which is disappointing because I so want to care but at the moment I find Eun Tak annoying and want to skip her scenes...I also hope she doesn't move in and get in the way of the Goblin/reaper bromance which is what I look forward to the most in this series.
I also have the strong believe that Reaper was the queen rather than the reincarnation of the King. Reason for him to become Reaper could be choosing to atone for the sins of the King instead of committing the sins herself.

Youre not alone in thinking the Goblin/ Eun Tak chemistry doesn't work. I am another person who skips over the needlessly long conversations between the two because I can't stand Eun Tak. And I got a bit irritated at the beginning of the episode- the Goblin and Reaper saved your life, instead of being thankful, she was being all pissy .

Required fields are marked *

Nope, you're not the only one here feeling a lack of investment in the Goblin-Bride romance. While Eun Tak as a character is growing on me, I am not bought over by their attraction. I can see why Eun Tak appreciates Goblin as an umbrella or a guardian over her life, but i'm not sure that's the same as falling in love with him. There lacks a strong basis for their romance, other than the fact that Eun Tak is the Goblin's bride. Nonetheless, given that this is a show that draws strongly on mythology, I'm hoping that their romance will play a huge role in the grander scheme of things and thus add weight to it. As of now, it's not drawing me in.

same tbh, not feeling their chemistry or kim go-euns acting as a matter of fact. or maybe it's how her character is written but at the moment it's kinda half-baked for me. But compared to Gong Yoo and Dong Wook, even Sung Jae, her expressions are mostly the same after awhile:/

It seems you are expecting a perfect heroine who says thank you or is nice and cool all the time. That, in my opinion, is unrealistic and would make Eun-Tak any cliche heroine. While she isn't perfect and puts on airs, she's been thoughtful and considerate. And, she's acting the part of a high schooler.

As for the romance, it's very touching in my opinion. The goblin is centuries' old and wishes to die, but Eun-Tak is young and energetic and wants to live despite her harsh life. They are both lonely, and they cure each other's loneliness and make each other happy just be being in each other's presence. I do wish Eun-Tak had said thanks to the goblin and reaper for saving her, but as the goblin had mentioned, she was an angry 19-year old in that moment.

I feel like you have defined a couple's 'chemistry' based on many other kdramas and their lead couple. It's not just about attraction and making it work in a relationship you know. A relationship is more than just chemistry. It's about bonding and having intimacy that is deeper than just sexual attraction or whatever. These two clearly appreciate each other's presence and company. It's not about physical attraction for either of them. It's about their bond with each other. The relationship. That's more precious than chemistry. Shin is a goblin who's been around for a thousand years. He's not going to be moved by something as superficial as chemistry.

Sexual attraction lasts 1 or 2 years and then they will get divorced or find someone else more sexual, and cheat and on and on. And I don't know as well why people keep pointing about the age gap and so on. 19 years old is okay for me. Or, am I 'primitive'?

0

You aren't primitive, Cinnamon. Age is just a number. Perpetuation of race is one of the basic functions of a human being or a any species tbh. If they understand each other and are happy, what difference does it make if the age difference is 15 or 50? (and it's consensual)

I also agree with what you said about sexual tension. The mutual understanding between them is worth more than anything in this world.

I found myself really loving Eun Tak character. I love it that as a high schooler she doesnt complaint about anything. She is not a whiner. She doesnt bad mouth any body. She tries to make do with what she has to continue living happily, as happy as she can be.
As she has been told by every ghosts that she is the goblin's bride, thus i think she readily accepts it. Ready to fall in love with the goblin and be a bride to the goblin. Since she discovers the goblin may be not nice but not bad either, plus he is cool (with his powers etc) and good looking, she finds herself really liking the man.
I like her acting cute instead of being a woman. I mean she didnt try to appeal herself as a woman to the goblin. Trying to seduce him or something. Now thats creepy.
She is a complete opposite from the goblin. I love their conversations, what being said and not said. Him being weary of life; she excited being free to be herself with him, him being gloomy; she being bubbly to make him less gloomy. I love those two. Totally ship them.
(Wow.. Didnt mean it to be so long..)
Just saying...

I like her, too. I think her bounciness is a mask for a desperately lonely young woman. I mean, who takes an even remotely kindly interest to her but ghosts? So to be the Goblin's Bride means belonging with someone, for the first time since the death of her mother.

Personally, I don't think she can see the sword at all. I think either the ghosts told her about it, or she found out about it somehow in her goblin research. This would fit with her longing for some kind of familial connection. (I think this is amplified in Episode 4, when she's lonely in the suite room.)

If she's not the Bride, it's intriguing to imagine who she might have been in that set of past lives.

Can i shout out loud and say I LOVE THIS DRAMA SO DAMN MUCH!

Loved the episode!

I love the bromance between Goblin and Grim reaper, their banters are hilarious.

few things i loved in this episode.
1. goblin dancing to girl group song, and he even dismissed his 'hate' if the king is reincarnated as girl , specially a female idol. HAHAHA

2. Goblin's and his savageness towards grim reaper.
Goblin: "who cares what you did in your past life. it's not important to me at all."
Grim Reaper: "Really??"
Goblin: "yeah... no matter what you did in your past life, I'd hate you just the same"

AND
goblin : i will call you
grim reaper: i dont have a phone
goblin: exactly.

3. Goblin trying so hard to be teleported to be with Eun tak, by going back and forth, opening and closing the door. He is so damn cute.

4. Goblin and grim reaper being scared of someone ringing the door bell.

Ok , coming to the serious part.
I think Grim reaper is reincarnated as the king, and Sunny as the Queen, because subconsciously, the reaper felt sad and a tear fell down, when he saw Sunny.

It would also be i think more kind of relate-able to the story if Eun Tak was reincarnation of the King, because, since she is the bride of the goblin, and she can be th only one to pull out the sword from goblin's chest, it would bring her pain, as if she is the reincarnation of the 'King' , the "king" should feel the pain of making innocent ones to die, and an innocent man to to be killed in gruesome manner. The sword will bring a lot of pain to the one pulling out, I have no idea, why i think like this, but it would be really heart wrenching to see if this happens.

I also am kind of suspicious of Eun tak seeing the sword. Firstly, she if she has seen it always, why did she pretend to not to see it? Why did she say the last minute, when he is about to leave to somewhere else?

I think she could have asked the ghosts about what the bride of the goblin should see, and they could have told her about the sword, but at same time, they could have told her, that the bride has to pull out the sword and this would make the goblin die. So i dont think, that she would want to see goblin die, since now she is warming up to him, and never wants to leave him. So she really must have seen the sword, or is she really lying without knowing the full story?

Bromance absolutely my fave thing of this drama. Goo Yoo is sooooo hot too.
I did feel too that the episode had too much lingering. It wasn't much but 2-5 secs more of a scene sometimes makes my mind fleet away.
U want people to rewatch and not get bored at a beautifully filmed scene -it's fresh now because we are being introduced to characters, their nuances and conflicts - but once we get to the 2nd half, it might get too much. let's cross our fingers

I still think the female lead is the weakest part. I like the actress but it's the writing here. But it's expected from KES, she likes them ... weak?

The best scenes of this show is with Shin and the reaper. They are so petty and childish but you can tell they do want to be friends even when they say differently. I never want this bromance to end!

- Why did Red Hot Fairy Grandma sound so ominous about the ring? Why does she wish I'll for Sunny & Grims?

- Did anyone notice Deok-Hwa's family secretary is reincarnated evil Eununch to the Goryeo king? Will that play a role?

- This recap mentions that The dead Queen is the sister of Kim Shin in promotional material. Does anyone know where can I find this source?

I think this implies the two are connected to the ring and she's just orchestrating their punishments now.

What is the real story behind goblin and the queen?
Are they siblings? Or was she the one who originally was bethroned to the goblin/ shin and the king snatched her away? In the first episode, the narrator said king was jealous of shin. Either because everyone respected him more than the king or was it the jealoisy due to the queen being more affectionate towards shin?

The goblin and the queen were lovers? They had an illicit affair? The Grim Reaper is the reincarnation of the young king?

Reaper was wearing a brooch (well, not sure how exactly it is called but it was a little thingy on his vest/short) in the shape of a king's crown. So it might be a hint that he is a reincarnation of the king. But the mention of being reincarnated in the opposite sex also makes me wonder if he was the queen. What sin would she have done? Infidelity (Reaper seemed upset at that thought)? Are we sure the Queen was Goblin's sister ?

While I agree with javabeans that this story isn't exactly moving quickly, I do appreciate how the series integrates its world-building elements so seamlessly and naturally within the interactions between the characters. There's no need for lengthy expositions or voiceovers and we get introduced to the rules of the world in very casual, light-hearted settings like cafes, parks and sometimes also in a very joking manner. There's always a danger for such mythology-heavy shows that the supernatural elements supersede genuine storytelling and characterisation, but this is not the case here.

There's a very clear focus on drawing out the relationships between the characters in a detailed manner and that's always the winning formula for any drama, when the characters are compelling. In this sense though, I have to say that Goblin kind of falls short because I'm not fully understanding his motivations and decisions. I do not fully see why he's attracted to Eun Tak and also why he decides he has to leave. Eun Tak fares much better here as even though we've only seen her for three episodes, I find her thoroughly fascinating. Although she does have moments of despair and has had a hard life, there's such an inner strength to her that keeps her going on. Her relationship with the supernatural world is very intriguing too as she almost inhabits that world more than the real world. I loved it when she declared to Goblin this week that her life may have had ups and downs, but she's happy with it. I also liked her asking Goblin at the end when her season of harvesting will come. She has such insight into the world because she can hear from the ghosts.

Grim Reaper also fares pretty well in terms of characterisation, though I'm not sure if it's more style than substance that's drawing us in currently. I liked the hints we got of his backstory and I suspect he might be the jealous king who killed most of Goblin's family.

This show is certainly compelling and there's a potentially grand and mythic story being told here. As there's too much to say within a comment space, have shared other thoughts on this episode on my blog:

I agree with what you said about Eun-Tak. I like her character a lot. A lot of people think she's whiny and overreacts. But I love how she tries to be cheerful even though she goes through so many hardships in her life.

Sometimes you can see her facade cracking. You can see that she tries hard to cover up her sadness by being cheerful and positive about her life.

Your analysis on eun tak is quite on point. There's this deep tone of melancholy in her eyes, and it's as if she keeps the cheery tone just to avert the miseries in her life. But she's quite strong, no? I thought when she was having this conversation at the sea with her mom, it was so sad and touchy. Like the way she said, no one ever asks me how am I doing, I could imagine how I would have felt if that were the case. So when we're in her shoes, her reasons seem quite legit, in the ways she handles her life.

The goblin has walked this earth for 900 years. He already know all of things there is to know about human. He oversees humans, and sometimes create miracles for them. But that also mean he's just someone who's watching from the sidelines. He has a caretaker, but he's just a mortal, so he continuously being leave behind. He's lonely and he's just tired. He wants an ending. So he's waiting for someone who can put all to an end, his bride.

But what he didn't expected is that he actually fall for his bride. With this newfound love, he becomes hesitant about leaving this world. Because the world's is becoming brighter. Because suddenly it's not as lonely as it been.

That's my opinion for goblin's character.

I think reaper was the king and Sunny was the queen!! It makes a lot of sense, especially the part about a reaper having to commit a huge sin to become one, as well as the initial animosity between reaper and goblin. Plus, both the reaper and sunny were attracted to the ring. It's such a clever story, and I'm really enjoying the scenes between goblin and reaper! Hopefully we'll still get to see a lot of bromance scenes since now that goblin knows Eun Tak is really his bride, I'm guessing the upcoming episodes will focus more on their growing relationship:) Thanks for the speedy recap too by the way!

I'm forever grateful that this drama has longer-than-1-hour episodes. They are not even enough!!!

And when Shin grabs the umbrella to got out after multiple failure to meet Euntak, I thought he is trying to find some place to be gloomy alone and let it rain... Then he happens to choose that very rock at the seaside, where he first met Euntak, where she actually is right now.

And I really like to subtle meaning of their conversation about him making rain. And at the very thought of him leaving her, it rains only where they stands.

For Reaper and Sunny, I expect that he was the King. He was punished to become a lonely Reaper. From those drawings of Queen, it must be that he truly loved his Queen and regret her death. Sunny was be the Queen, but I don't know why she is punished to be alone in this life. Is this to make her wait for the Reaper to appear? The price they have to pay for their encounter, is ''Sunny being near-death", and Reaper (and Shin) trying to save her, which lead to him being stripped off his power and immortality to be able to stay with her in this life?

I just rewatched ep 3, and have to doubt my self earlier.
Grim reaper might be the Queen the way he shed a tear when he saw Sunny. He and Shin are always naturally bickering, like siblings...
Sunny is the king, as she was punished to be alone without friends, family, lover in this life. No one is around her, even ghost, only Euntak sticks around as she's special.
Let's wait for more clues... Ep 4 tonight, yay!!!

Like many already said, I'm also starting to think that maybe the reaper is the king and I'm even thinking Yoo In Na might be the queen reincarnated. The queen died young so there is no way for us to know what she would look like as an adult. She was also drawn to the ring and her comment of how it felt like that ring belonged in her hand has me thinking that.
As for the reaper being the king well they did say “You have to have committed a big sin in a past life to become a reaper.” So what bigger sin than killing so many innocent people. Besides after seeing the flashback scene where Shin returns to the palace and sees the body and paintings. Weren't all those paintings of the queen? If so, I was thinking as he grew up the king truthfully regretted what happened and was never able to forget his love for the queen (hence also why the reaper starts crying as soon as he sees Sunny). He was very young and it seem liked the eunuch was influencing his decisions and kind of brainwashing him. So maybe as he grew older and wiser, he realized the great sin he had committed but it was obviously to late to make any amends. Or maybe I'm just hoping that's the case because I don't want to lose the bromance.

As for the sword, Isn't that a different sword that comes with his goblin powers? Is the same one he used in ep 1 to cut down the ship, and in ep 2 we saw it in flashback when he was using it to summon gold. Also I thought he was in pain before because he was forcefully trying to pull it out. Maybe if he leaves it alone it doesn't hurt.

What I do want to know is if Eun-Tak was always able to see it or if she is now able because they're starting to get closer and more attached to each other?

And Also, for anyone who is familiar with Korean Folktales/Folklore...Is Samshin Halmoni ever bad? I tried to research it but the very few pages I found all describe her as a goddess that helps pregnant women/babies....actually now that I'm typing this I'm thinking what if the queen was pregnant and thats why Samshin halmoni is upset at them?

This drama is making me come up with too many theories

Interesting PPL, "Come to Subway, death awaits you." Figures. Subway was already featured in a near-death experience on K2, now they have a divine being eating and hanging around Subway, next God himself will be sending Subway down from Heaven. Forget manna, Subway is better.

I was over the moon to see Subway and death being associated once again - if this is a big game being played by all of the PDs I will be beyond thrilled.

Get Subway as a sponsor, figure out some way to pair it with disaster or death!

That ending though omg... They really have a way of enticing the viewers to watch the next ep, what a surprising cliffhanger! While I was watching ep 3, I thought that it's perhaps only when the Goblin falls in love with Euntak or when they both fall in love with each other, then will she see the sword, but the ending really just overthrew that thought... I was a little sceptical as to whether she could really see the sword, but just right before the ep ended, the way she pointed at where the sword is, it's too accurate for her to be lying about it. So I believe that she has been able to see it all this while, but I wonder why she didn't tell the Goblin about it.
The Goblin has been mentioning throughout episode 2 and 3 that he is leaving, where is he leaving to? Anyone knows?

This episode gave away quite a number of important information omg! That the Grim Reaper could be the King, and Sunny could be the Goblin's sister/wife or the Queen (Wiki says that she is the 'young Queen', so I am guessing she is either the Goblin's sister or a really really close friend). And that both have done something that eventually led to their punishment. Im aware of the King's crime, but what did Sunny do to deserve a punishment? Im so excited about the chemistry and story between the two! Did the drama mention as to why the Grim Reaper can't touch anyone? Is it because he can see their future or?

That old lady really has quite an intriguing role. She is like the Puppet Master, pulling the strings behind all the characters. I only know that she is the Goddess of Birth and Fate when I went to look at Wiki, so maybe I am thinking too much, and she is merely just cameoing here and there. But that would be a little disappointing.
I am also curious about her possible connection with DeokHwa. I honestly don't believe Deokhwa is as innocent as he looks. There are just too many coincidences! Him being the Goblin's servant's grandson, leading the Reaper into the Goblin's house, meeting and talking to Euntak, and eventually owning that Chicken store of Sunny's (that's her store right?).

I read in another forum that the sword that Kim Shin wields is just the physical sword that he is able to conjure whenever he pleases, but the sword that is stuck in his chest is a metaphorical presentation of that said sword. It's like a spiritual sword, that only he and the goblin bride can see. Which is why it doesn't show to normal people, and when we(viewers) do see it, it always has that bluish-green glow, a little different from the one he used to slice that car in half.

He doesn't pull the sword per se, but he conjures another physical sword for whatever reason.

Yes.
Im episode 1 he was able to conjure up his sword to destroy and sink the ship at the end to punish the crew.
It's not something the writer made up suddenly in ep3.

I agree, one sword is an object he can summon like gold and wield with godly power, and the other is constantly in him as a source of pain and power.
As far as how the pain from the embedded sword works, I feel like it must be similar to having other types of chronic pain. At times, you feel ok not because the pain is gone, but other things are distracting you from the pain, and at other times there is nothing that could distract you and you would do anything to take it away. (amiright auto-immune disease peeps?)
Since I'm here, my theory is Eun Tak couldn't see the sword until she gave him a gift (the maple leaf). We don't see the aftermath of that moment and I think the lag is her coming to terms with what she saw then having to find the Goblin's house. That is why Deok Hwa was orchestrating keeping it for her and giving it back to her the moment she went to look for it. Maybe he is a lot more knowledgeable and crafty than the show wants us to think.

On that note, I have very strong feelings that Deok Hwa isn't entirely human either. Sure he has a rational explanation for what he has seen, but he's just a tad bit too blase about simply accepting the truth about our two leads. (But then again, so is our heroine. How in hell does a 19 year old as expressive as she is, manage to retain a straight face, and not betray any reaction when she sees a guy with a big ass sword through his chest!)
Also Deok Hwa was suspiciously on point and available, both to collect the book with the leaf when she left it at the store, and to return it when she went back for it. I fail to see how he pulled that off unless he was following her 24x7, which I do not buy because someone as flashy as him, she would have noticed.
Another indicator is that scene right at the beginning, when we're introduced to Deok Hwa grown up, his first scene is with young-grandma. It was a random scene that served no narrative purpose, and we don't really know what happened that one time they went for a drink, and all we've seen of him, is post that date. So we have no 'before' to compare his 'after' behavior with.

Gosh my thoughts exactly ,there's something else going on with deokhwa ,I felt that library scene a bit out of place ,I know it's a continuation of the previous episode ,where we see a hand take the book she placed there ,or he could just be like the perfect wingman for the goblin :D ,but a bit too detailed in my opinion if that's the case
About her seeing the sword ,she's been seeing weird ghosts all her life and has been able to survive pretending that they don't exist ,I don't think ignoring a sword would be much of a problem for her ,and we don't really know since when she's seen it ,so yea

The sword stucked on Goblin's chest signifies his curse. It's like bearing the pain and living an immortal life. In the previous episode he tried to pull it to end his misery and loneliness after seeing his friends/sevants (Deok Hwa's ancestors) die. He wanted to end pull out the sword (remove the curse) to let him have his rest.

The sword he used to split the car is like his 'magic wand' that also makes golds.

For other viewers, each episode is so long (almost 1 hour and 20 minutes), but for me, I really love how each scene unfolds like a fairy tale book. It is cinematographically awesome and the directors and editors are really doing a superb job.

Still this is a KES drama (haha). We're just in episode 2 but she makes all of us be in trance and wait on the edge. All the characters are beautifully written and executed. ???

Maple couple, please just give each other a hug or a kiss! I know you both want it! ??

Another good episode I truly like the story so far, so many mysteries and questions are still unanswered. However I feel that we have been given clues so it's not too bad. I truly want to know who the old (now young) lady is. What connection did JET's mom have with her?

I have a feeling JET is kinda also immortal since she technically should't exist therefore her name can't be summoned or written by a grim reaper. So that gives to the possibility of her and the goblin living together forever (one can only wish XD)
or there is also the theory that upon dying the goblin will become a grim reaper but then that leaves amnesia in the story line :/

Anyway the thing that gets me from the beginning of the episode is that scene where the grim reaper and the goblin are walking side by side to save JET. We clearly saw all the lights turn off but there is that convenient spotlight-like light behind them. I couldn't help but imagine Yoo Duk-Hwa bored and annoyed managing that light.

How long is each episode anyway? I'm kind of confused over how I feel about this show. Some parts feel very long and draggy, the banter goes back and forth, back and forth endlessly, and I start to feel bored, but then the scenes start to pick up all of a sudden and hurtle forward to an explosive cliffhanger, and I am sitting up, thinking, heck, what an awesome end that was! What a stirring song! I can't wait to watch the next episode! So here I am...confused.

I totally agree. Found myself falling asleep. It's like one long pictorial.. pretty but lacking substance. Occasionally it stirs excitement and shows promise but I actually appreciate the recaps more than watching the drama itself because they skip the unnecessarily drawn out scenes. Please oh please pick up pace! I really want to like this drama!!

Okay, I don't know about anyone else, but the scene that really got me (other than the obvious holy shit she sees the sword scene) was the scene with the ring. Was Grim Reaper some part of Shin's old life in Goryeo? Was Sunny?

And the biggest mystery: WHO IS THIS SHAPE SHIFTING AGE DEFYING GRANNY

I think that the reaper was the king and that he really loved his queen but was manipulated into killing both Shin and his queen due to his youth and fear.
It also looked like he regretted the queens death in that he was constantly painting her likeness.
It would make for an interesting dilema if the reapers curse were to remember who he was and Sunny was the reincarnation of his queen.
It may very well be that the ring is the object that ties them together as it could have been what tied them together in the past.

Iam loving this show so far and i don't have anything to complain about.
But, i can't help but think that reaper could be Shin's second in command's reincarnation, considering the budding of their bromance.

"Shin reappears in the road carrying his flaming goblin sword (wait, so he could pull it out? Or are we just conveniently ignoring his curse right now?)"
Note that we also saw his sword in the flashback with young Deok-hwa when Shin was drunk and made a lot of gold appear. Maybe it's like a copy of the object that made him a goblin and can now be used for his magic? Not the actual sword that's stuck in his chest.
