Legend of the Blue Sea: Episode 12

I don’t think I’ve ever liked Lee Min-ho this much, which is a surprise because I liked him an awful lot in his Boys Before Flowers and City Hunter days, and so very little in the years following that I wasn’t sure I’d ever come around again. But Joon-jae flailing is my favorite thing right now, and watching him run around trying to make his girl happy (and flubbing it fairly regularly) is just the thing to lift my spirits and make me laugh. This show isn’t very deep, but it can still make me happy.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Back in the Joseon prison, Dam-ryung angrily tells Lord Yang to die and never be reborn, raising his sword to strike. At the last second, more officers enter the building to order Dam-ryung to stop, and instead read him his charges of being bewitched by a strange creature and failing to fulfill his duty. Hearing his punishment of house arrest, Dam-ryung stares in disbelief, while Lord Yang grins.

In present-day Seoul, Joon-jae gets caught by the detective he impersonated previously, and gets cuffed. Joon-jae volunteers to go quietly to avoid a scene, knowing that Chung is nearby, and puts up no fight. The pink octopus stuffed animal he’d won for her drops to the ground, while nearby, Chung wishes for him to come to her quickly.

Joon-jae looks back at her as he’s pulled away, crossing in front of a taxi’s path—a taxi that pulls to a stop, right in front of Chung standing alone. It’s Dae-young, back to his creepy stalking.

Chung notices the pink octopus on the ground and picks it up, wondering where Joon-jae is. He hears her thoughts as he’s being shoved into the detective’s car, then asks to answer his phone when Chung calls. Detective Hong is having none of it, since Joon-jae used a similar line on him three years ago and called his buddies, who helped him escape.

Joon-jae tries another tack, asserting his rights and telling the cop that he’s violating proper protocol. Detective Hong says he’ll take the heat, refusing to budge.

Detective Hong’s partner joins them and wonders why he’s bothering with Joon-jae when they came here hoping to catch the escaped killer, Ma Dae-young. At that name, Joon-jae grows alarmed and says, “The one Ma Dae-young is after is me.” He insists that if Dae-young is truly in the area, he’ll follow Joon-jae, and he’s so certain that the detective considers it.

Chung smiles to see her phone ring from “The Person You Know Best” (heh, Joon-jae’s upgraded himself from Person I Don’t Know That Well) and answers. Joon-jae tells her something has come up and instructs her to go home, and Chung says she’ll take a taxi. Uh-oh.

She steps into the taxi as she’s talking, but trails off to see Dae-young’s eyes in the rearview mirror. Joon-jae senses something strange, just as Chung says, “You’re wearing a hat today, too.” That’s what she’d said about the last time she saw Dae-young, and Joon-jae is suddenly on high alert, asking if she’s with Dae-young and where they’re headed.

All Chung says is that “the place where we were going to meet on the first snow” is getting bigger in her view. The call abruptly ends, and calling back gets no response. The clue is enough to tell Joon-jae that they’re heading toward Namsan Tower, and the detectives speed off, temporarily shelving their reservations about listening to the con man.

Detective Hong threatens to kill Joon-jae if this is another scam, but Joon-jae is deadly serious in his reply that if something happens to Chung, he’ll kill the detective.

Joon-jae does, at least, get the handcuffs removed, then tells the detective to call for backup. He even issues the instructions on tracking down stolen taxis, and while the detective bristles at the order, he complies since it makes good sense.

In the taxi, Chung lies unconscious on the seat, apparently pricked with a syringe that’s been stuck into the seat. Road checkpoints are set up to inspect passing vehicles, but Dae-young veers off on a side street and avoids being stopped.

When Joon-jae hears that no suspects have been caught, he figures that Dae-young took the only possible route that would take him out of Seoul unnoticed, and directs the cops in that direction. As Dae-young’s taxi drives out of the city, Joon-jae wills Chung to call out to him, promising to hear her.

Dae-young pulls up to an unoccupied hospital, and some time later, Chung awakens in a room filled with (shudder) a bloody rag, used medical materials, and a large barrel being filled with water by Dae-young. Whatever he’s given her has temporarily paralyzed her legs, but he assures her not to worry, since he has no intention of harming her: “I just can’t stand being curious about something, so I’m going to confirm it.”

He tells her of his recurring dreams lately, which he tried to shrug off as nonsense despite feeling increasingly feel real. He recognizes Chung from his dream (as Se-hwa)—as well as the fact that she was a mermaid in them. He supposes that dunking her in the barrel ought to be confirmation enough.

Detective Hong recognizes the road as leading to the hospital where Dae-young was once treated, which has since been shut down. Pulling up to the building, Joon-jae and the cops split up to search different wings of the hospital.

As Dae-young approaches to splash her in water, Chung asks if the dream version of her issued any warning, because mermaids don’t let people harm them without repercussion.

In a flash, Dae-young recalls the Joseon fisherman’s warning not to touch the mermaid, because she has the ability to steal his memory. He stares at Chung’s face and sees Se-hwa, accompanied by more Joseon memories of Lord Yang vowing to catch the mermaid. Last to flash before his eyes is Dam-ryung raising his sword, ready to cut him down.

Chung warns Dae-young that the moment he raises a hand to her, he’ll lose all his memories. She reaches toward him with a hand, and Dae-young reflexively recoils, backing out of her reach.

As Joon-jae nears the operating room where they currently are, Dae-young loses his nerve and runs away. Chung huddles to herself and thinks, “Heo Joon-jae, I’m scared.”

Joon-jae hears her thoughts and heads to the operating room, where he finds her slumped over. He gently cradles her in his arms and apologizes for being late.

Outside, the detectives hear Dae-young’s taxi screeching away and realize they’ve lost him, to their frustration.

Joon-jae takes Chung home, and Nam-doo leaps up to inform him of the manhunt for Dae-young that’s dominating the news, and that “Mimi” Detective Hong is the one in charge of the case. Annnnnd then Mimi Detective walks in the front door, HA, and asks what the Mimi stands for. Nam-doo mumbles its meaning: crazy misery.

He and Tae-oh watch nervously as the detective and his partner sit down to wait for Joon-jae, who helps Chung to his room. The mood is hilariously awkward as the con artists watch the detectives take in the splendor of Joon-jae’s house, and Nam-doo offers up that he means to donate everything to charity when he dies.

Joon-jae tucks Chung into his bed and tells her to rest after her ordeal. She sighs that it’s nice to be home again, and Joon-jae tells her to stay here rather than leaving again.

“Forever?” she asks. He replies that she can’t stay forever—and then clarifies that he’s only renting the place for two years, hee.

She doesn’t quite understand the concept of rent, so he explains that he owns the furniture and stuff inside, but they’ll have to move when the contract runs out. She asks who’ll do the moving, and he says, “You’ll have to do it. Since you’ll be going with me.” Aw, sweet. Not that I trust Chung to connect those dots appropriately, but it’s sweet of him to say.

He tells her to sleep, then heads out to talk with the detectives. To prove that Dae-young really is targeting him (and that Chung was merely bait), Joon-jae shows them CCTV footage of the night Dae-young impersonated a cop, which was the night their neighbor was murdered. He also shows them the text messages from Manager Nam, stating his theory that Dae-young masked the car accident as a drunk driving case when he was actually behind it.

Detective Hong starts to turn the topic to their crimes, but Joon-jae points out that they’ll have some trouble nailing them for their cons, because none of their victims have reported them. Plus, his impersonation of Detective Hong didn’t net him any bribes or harm anyone—the offense only merits a fine. Heh. I love how the detectives keep trying to control the situation, which keeps getting turned around on them. Joon-jae must get it from his mother.

Joon-jae tells the cops to focus on capturing Dae-young, offering his help. Detective Hong huffs, “Do you think I’m going to catch him because you told me to? I was already going to catch him!” Joon-jae does offer to deal with his crimes after Dae-young’s case is wrapped up, and when the detective scoffs about trusting him, Joon-jae reminds him that he knows where he lives: “I’ve gained things that I can lose, so I can’t just run away anymore.”

Chung lies awake in bed, in a much happier mood after Joon-jae’s words about moving together, and tries to figure out whether “moving rentals” means getting married. Upstairs in her loft, Joon-jae chuckles at the line of her thinking, particularly when she wonders if he only meant she should help physically move furniture. She worries, Does he mean he’ll marry another woman, and I’m supposed to move his furniture?

Joon-jae sighs that she’s got it wrong, but Chung continues to second-guess herself. She wonders why he touched her hair, sure that it was a tender gesture, and he laughs that she’s cute.

Heo Joon-jae, she thinks, is it that you didn’t only make a plan to like me, but already do… that you’ve fallen for…? Is this the start of romantic love? Chung gets giddy over the idea, then deflates at the thought that he’s been too curt to like her.

Chung gets carried away swinging from one extreme to the other, and now Joon-jae can’t sleep at the furious barrage of questions Chung is asking herself. He tosses and turns, then finally opens the loft door to bark at her to let him sleep. Which, of course, makes no sense because she’s just lying there peacefully in bed.

Joon-jae tells her not to think too much and go to sleep, and she sends him a goodnight wave. He returns to bed, ready to fall asleep… only to have Chung think, He sounded slightly angry. Why is he mad? No, but he smiled and said, “Good night!” What did that smile mean? And on and on it goes.

Meanwhile, Jin-joo is still on edge because she can’t get a hold of Nam-doo regarding investing with CEO Kim. She’s determined to keep trying, while her husband wonders if their efforts were in vain. She tells him firmly that “Just as there is no such thing as black money, there is no such thing as wasted effort. ” Do two bad logics cancel each other out?

Jin-joo decides to put in more work on the Chairman Heo front, and calls Stepmom to arrange a meeting. Stepmom agrees, and then tampers with more of her husband’s pills—and this time, Chi-hyun sees her do it. He waits till she’s gone and takes the pills she’d replaced.

At the breakfast table, Nam-doo notes that both Joon-jae and Chung look tired. Chung says, “It’s because I had a lot of things to think about.” Joon-jae echoes the sentiment: “Yeah, it’s because she had a lot of things to think about.” At their surprise, he clarifies that she was rustling about all night, and Chung worries, Is he mad at me right now? Why? Did he start disliking me overnight? Hahaha, I could watch this go on forever.

Joon-jae bursts out, “That’s not it!” Everyone stares at him blankly, so he covers up his slip, saying that she wasn’t rustling that much after all.

Joon-jae thinks back to Chung enjoying her swim in the pool, and announces that they’ll go shopping for a tree today, and orders Chung to stay home. He means to give her alone time to enjoy the water, but his emphasis on the word “alone” makes her wonder if it’s a punishment of some sort.

So Joon-jae clarifies that there are probably things she can’t do in a house full of men, so she’ll have until 7 o’clock today to do whatever she wants.

Is he telling me to clean the house? she thinks. Joon-jae adds that he doesn’t mean chores, but for her to do something fun. He pinches her cheeks in exasperation, and she thrills a little at the touch, feeling her cheeks.

As the boys get ready to head out, Chung thinks that her cheeks hurt a little, but it makes her feel so good that she wants to share the feeling with Joon-jae. Suddenly alarmed, he jumps to his feet as she lurches for him, hands outstretched. He grabs her wrists and whirls her around safely, pinning her against the wall, and reminds her to do whatever she wants while they’re out.

His behavior triggers another flood of questioning thoughts, and Joon-jae hurries away to get away from them.

Chairman Heo meets with his attorney, who asks about his revised will just as Chi-hyun opens the office door. Chi-hyun hears his father explain that he wants to leave everything to Joon-jae, which hurts. The attorney advises him to leave his wife and Chi-hyun something to avoid potential dispute down the line. The chairman just asks how much that would leave for Joon-jae, which would be more than half.

Stepmom and Jin-joo have dinner together, and Jin-joo is in her most obsequious mode, but just as she starts to broach the topic of potential investments, Stepmom is distracted by a call from her attorney. Jin-joo starts drinking peevishly, and that soon gets out of hand until Jin-joo is slurring her words and calling Stepmom “unni” (“Because you’re older than me—you’re old!”).

Drunkenness makes Jin-joo cringingly honest, and she reminds Stepmom of how much homemade food she’s sent over and accuses her of taking without giving back. Stepmom keeps her cool until Jin-joo tells her to shut up and asks if she’ll include her in their investments.

Stepmom starts to leave, and Jin-joo mutters that Stepmom is terrible for stealing the husband away from her high school classmate. It’s not common knowledge, but Jin-joo is up on all the tabloid gossip about Stepmom’s homewrecking exploits, and knows that the first wife disappeared afterward and her son left the house. Stepmom fumes and storms out.

At con artist central, the boys set up a Christmas tree and decorations and invite Shi-ah over for a party. Joon-jae hums as he cooks, smiling at Chung’s inner monologue as she tries to pick out what to wear, wanting to outshine Shi-ah.

Her floor-length gown is a showstopper (I love Shi-ah’s sour reaction, which Chung returns), and Tae-oh sneaks a photo. Joon-jae hears the shutter click, and this time Tae-oh’s prepared to run before getting his photo deleted from him (while Shi-ah preens, thinking it was of her.)

When Joon-jae tosses a cracker into his mouth, Chung gives it a try and is excited when she picks it up right away. Shi-ah fails, but uses it as a chance to get Joon-jae to teach her, while Chung blames herself for requesting the snacks in the first place.

Because I’m already good at this, Heo Joon-jae can’t teach me, she laments to herself. Why am I so good at things like this?! But I can’t stop. The crackers are too delicious!

Joon-jae bursts out laughing, while Chung glumly continues flipping crackers into her mouth like a pro.

The ladies run into each other outside the bathroom, where Shi-ah makes a pointed comment about Chung being back in the house, and Chung replying that she can come and go as she pleases. She repeats Joon-jae’s line about moving rentals together, and Shi-ah sounds a little worried when she hears about Joon-jae declaring his plan to like Chung.

Then she laughs it off, telling Chung smugly that Joon-jae’s good at making a girl wonder if he really likes her, keeping her on the hook while feeding her hope. Chung recognizes that feeling and looks worried at Shi-ah’s description of “tending your goldfish pond,” which refers to someone keeping someone dangling after him, not wanting to reject or commit.

Shi-ah says Chung can’t handle being a trapped goldfish in the pond, and advises her to return to whatever river or sea she came from. She’s just extending the pond metaphor, of course, but the words seem to have a particular effect on Chung.

That night, Dae-young ignores repeated phone calls from “J,” which turns out to be Stepmom. It puts her on edge, just as Chi-hyun joins her with a serious face to ask who his biological father is.

She takes his hand to say that his birth father loves him “in his own way,” which is never a description of anything good. She says that he knows that Chi-hyun is better off not knowing him, which is why he has stayed away. She tells him that all he needs to know is that they are the only ones who can trust each other, and he replies sadly that it seems that way.

Later that night, Shi-ah calls Tae-oh out to a pojangmacha for drinks, and presents him with a photo of herself, telling him not to resort to sneaking photos of her. Pwahaha. I love this misunderstanding. He insists that his heart isn’t hurting at all, but she launches into a forced heart-to-heart talk by recalling the start of her feelings for Joon-jae, seven years ago.

She says that she’s been able to maintain this relationship with Joon-jae by never letting her feelings show (uhhh) and always maintaining enough of a distance (double uhhh), practically patting herself on the back for knowing how to express love maturely.

Cut to: Shi-ah blubbering into her phone at Joon-jae about having a “plan” of her own, which involves a small wedding and donating money instead of throwing their baby a first birthday party, “because those are on trend.” She asks what he’s been doing with her all this while, and wails at him not to hang up.

On the other end of the line, Joon-jae winces at her loud sobbing and tells her to go home. Apparently this is a pattern with Shi-ah, to be fine all year and then have a big outburst at the end of the year.

Joon-jae finds Chung lying glumly on his bed and chastises her to go up to her room, which sets off another round of thoughts in her head about whether he’s keeping her in his goldfish pond, and whether he’s sick of her. Joon-jae hastily backtracks and offers to take her room again, and urges her to sleep well without thinking too much tonight.

As he heads up the ladder, her heartbeat thuds louder, and she thinks that her heart is pounding again: Will I be able to get free of this fish pond? Joon-jae heads upstairs, exhausted at the idea of another sleepless night.

Jin-joo wakes up in the morning after her drinking binge, and the memories come back to her in little horrific bursts. She wails that it has to be a dream and flops over in mortification.

Also suffering from post-drinking humiliation is Shi-ah, who checks her phone log and screams in embarrassment.

Jin-joo finds Stepmom as she’s having a pedicure and kneels at her feet, all apologies for everything “the beast living inside me” said last night, swearing that it wasn’t really her. Stepmom receives her coolly.

Chung asks Tae-oh to teach her how to use computers, since she wants to search for more information than the television provides. Tae-oh tries not to act flustered (Chung asks, “Is your face color usually red? It’s always red when I see you”), and asks what she wants to know.

Chung leans in to whisper into his ear, “Maintaining a golfish pond.” Specifically, how to avoid that fate.

Joon-jae sees her being all cozy with Tae-oh and barks at her not to whisper in his ear (“Just think instead!”), then orders Tae-oh to stop his ears from reddening. He offers to teach her how to use the computer instead, but Chung declines the offer, thinking to herself that she has to find out whether he likes her for real or is just maintaining his pond.

Exasperated, Joon-jae blurts, “Does that stuff have to be said out loud?” Chung asks what that means, and he tries to act like he meant she could learn how to use a computer just by watching. He does, at least, concede this point to Tae-oh, who starts with teaching her how to run an internet search.

Chairman Heo returns to his doctor, this time with Stepmom, and hears the doctor’s puzzlement over his worsening condition. Stepmom pushes for surgery, since the doctor warns that doing nothing could lead to blindness. The doctor asks again if the chairman truly has never poked or injured his eyes, and is perplexed at his denial.

After the appointment, Stepmom steps aside for a moment, and the chairman’s vision blurs as a woman walks down the hall in his direction—it’s Joon-jae’s mother, who stops in her tracks to see her ex-husband. He can’t quite focus on her face, so he registers no recognition while Mom is deeply shaken. She overhears Stepmom suggesting lunch with Chi-hyun, and watches them with hurt eyes.

It flashes her back to her younger days, when Stepmom had visited her for the first time after their school days to sell insurance. She’d changed her name in the intervening years, too—from Ji-hyun to Seo-hee. Mom had told her cheerfully that her husband’s business was doing well, while Stepmom had admitted to the hardship of raising a child alone.

Mom had agreed to buy a pair of policies and told Stepmom to visit her husband’s office too. The memory makes Mom burn with resentment now, knowing how that all shook out.

That evening, Joon-jae gets a call from Chi-hyun and, after momentary hesitation, answers it. Chi-hyun slurs, “Wow, it’s the real son—it’s me, the fake son,” clearly well into his cups. Joon-jae asks if Chi-hyun thinks they’re friends now, and Chi-hyun laughs bitterly, “No, the fake can’t be friends with the real.”

Then Chi-hyun starts to break down, saying, “I don’t think I’ll be able to protect your father. You protect your father, and I’ll protect my mother.” Joon-jae asks what this is about, and Chi-hyun calls it “the last warning and gift from the fake to the real.”

Joon-jae finds Chung in his bed again, and she says she was waiting to ask him something. A barrage of questions runs through her mind: Why did you say you’d make a plan to like me? Why did you come to save me? Why did you hug me? Why did you touch my hair? Do you like me? Or are you maintaining your goldfish pond like Cha Shi-ah said?

She thinks of how she searched all day on the internet, but couldn’t find the answer to his feelings. But out loud, she just says, “Never mind. I haven’t figured it out yet.” She says she’ll ask after spending the night to think about it.

At those words, Joon-jae sighs and asks just exactly how much she intends to think about it.

Chung figures it’ll be all night long. Joon-jae tells her he doesn’t know what she’s thinking (heh), but asks her if she could not think it. She asks herself what that means and whether he’s angry again, about to send herself into another tizzy of questions.

Joon-jae just places his hand on hers, and leans in to kiss her forehead.

“Now it’s nice and quiet,” he says. “From now, don’t think of anything, and don’t do anything.” And then he kisses her.

COMMENTS

No epilogue again?! Come on, throw me a bone here!

I loved this week’s set of episodes, because they’re so light-heartedly funny in face of the murderous threat looming in the background. Granted, I don’t find the villainous Stepmom or murderous Dae-young or conflicted Chi-hyun to be compelling in anything above the most baseline way of driving forward the plot—I appreciate that they keep conflict in the mix, but could care less about the actual mechanism of that conflict, which feels surface-level at best. But when the episodes leave those elements in the background and focus more on the relationship’s developments, and with a wry sense of humor at that, I’m satisfied.

It is too bad that the villains aren’t more interesting, because if anything, You From Another Star showed us that a one-dimensional villain could still be wildly entertaining when given the right treatment. A little humor or tongue-in-cheek treatment may have done wonders for both Stepmom and Dae-young, who are humorless and therefore boring to me. I do like Chi-hyun better as a character, and he’s acted more interestingly, so I can manage to dredge up some semblance of empathy for his character while also finding him unsurprising and inessential. I’d like for the show to actually work more with the brotherly tension, because I think that’s where there’s still hope for these characters and relationships; Stepmom is a cartoon character, but Chi-hyun still feels human. I won’t hold my breath since it looks like the show is going to pursue the father-son redemption more than the stepbrothers, but maybe if we’re lucky we’ll get a minor reconciliation for them.

As for this whole hearing-her-true-thoughts business, it had me cracking up all episode and eating it all up. I can feel where it may start to wear long if they drag it out too much, but this week took a nice, entertaining approach that had plot value as well, pushing Joon-jae to deal with how to handle his newfound realizations. I thought it was lovely to have him treat the mermaid aspect of her character as almost an afterthought, like it’s not nearly as important that she’s some otherspecies being as it is that she not be so worried that he doesn’t like her back.

It makes sense when you think about it, because Dam-ryung never really had much of an issue—or reaction, even—to the mermaid aspect of Se-hwa, either. That’s probably because they met so young and he’d known her since childhood, but I think that’s only part of it; it feels more like they’re just two souls recognizing each other, and the only problems posed by her mermaid origins are external—what other people think of mermaids, and how they aim to exploit her.

I love how, as a result of Joon-jae gaining the ability to hear Chung’s thoughts, it puts him in the position of adjusting to her feelings, rather than forcing her to adapt to human life one-sidedly, which often seems the situation in mermaid stories. The fish-out-of-water gags are great fodder for comedy, but on the relationship-building front, it seems more meaningful that Joon-jae is learning to adapt to make her happy. (Plus, I did find it both funny and terribly real how her thoughts demonstrated pretty perfectly all those soul-crushingly insecure, volatile thoughts every girl has felt in her life over whether a boy likes her or not. The pain is real!)

One could argue that he could just go ahead and tell her already, if he’s so concerned about her hurt feelings, but hey, some people need to learn in stages. Long, slow, duncelike stages. As Joon-jae is often at his most lovable when in his dunce mode, I have no problems with this.

Though it's sweet I don't get the point why joon jae hears her thoughts
He learnt that she is the mermaid and he is completely fine with the fact
But what made him to hear her thoughts

He has started to love her and as we already know from the past episodes, "the boy loved the mermaid, and could hear her real voice."
I think he doesn't care if she is a mermaid, because he loves her too much. And has figured out that Ma Dae Young is the Bad Man. And as Kim Dam Ryeong told him to take care of her. so he is completing his duty. And also he loves her and wants to protect her without even realizing this.

Wow, JJH is so so so skinny. I can see all of her chest bones in that dress. Her face looks haggard too. Did filming do this to her?

She's not the only one. LMH was looking really skinny in the jjimjilbang scenes and tired too. Feel so bad for both of them. Live shooting sucks!

It's not just the filming. JJH is also 3 years older compared to when she filmed My Love from the Stars. In the meantime, she gave birth to a baby boy and we know that pregnancy and childbirth do aged a woman more than just the passing of her chronological age; that's a medical fact.

Shiah/Taeho is hilarious. Poor boy can't escape. Also Joonjae ordering the detectives around, and Namdoo's ahjumma pants. This writer does humor well.

Actually, I thought of something to say. Haha

LMH is amazing in this role. This is my favorite of all of his characters (and yes, I also watched City Hunter and the classic BOF). But bumbling awkward sweet boys in love just have a special place in my heart.

I must say I'm excited for the policemen and the conmen to start working together! Potential bromance and funny moments await! It'll be like Police Unit 38 <3

I'm wondering if we'll find out that one of the other conmen was the king in his past life. Can you imagine cutie Tai-Oh in saeguk garb? That'd be such a beautiful sight. Also, I like Tai-Oh and Shi-ah together. That's a relationship I'd root for, especially since she's already made herself such a fool around him.

I found all the mind reading scenes really funny too, especially with JJ flopping around his bed like he did when he realized he was the guy Chung was referring to earlier. But I hope this doesn't drag on too long because I don't understand why he doesn't confess to her. Why make her guess? The narrative hasn't really given a motivation yet for that, right, or did I miss something? I totally don't blame Chung for being confused. He's all grabby with her but has never directly stated his feelings. Why?? Is he now being coy? Or doesn't want the others to know when it's obvious to everyone that there is more going on between them.

You know as much as I really enjoyed the cute, I do agree that the baseline plot really does nothing for this drama so it feels draggy to me. And while being an alien came with so many challenges that it kept things interesting, with this show I feel like it's mostly solved? Like the fact that he can hear her thoughts means that they're on the same page right? Outside of her not being aware yet. So while I'm happy to keep this running joke of one-sided telepathy going, I feel a bit like we're detouring quite a bit for not much. Like JB said, if they'd angled for some brotherly tension, we might have seen some more substance to explore but honestly, it feels like ALL of our background characters are just shiny wallpaper. Are we going to the dad-son makeup, mom-son reuniting, serial killer couple wrap-up, mermaid love revelation, and our sageuk story wrap up all squeezed into the final week? Because that just screams bad pacing.
Maybe I just miss the epilogs a lot lol.

they have cute moments but something's missing even though they play their parts really well... And LMH said it himself that they had to work on their chemestry...

Maybe the actors, the PD, director, and all of it would make an awesome drama in theory but in reality well, is not like that 100%.

And they need to stop dumbin' Chungie ... She's actually smart enough to master hangul overnight with a laptop. And that sassy attitude she has need to me more out there, not only to fight with Shi Ah, but to defend herself from the bad guy

I agree with Javabeans that it's a nice touch that he just readily accepted that she's a mermaid as an after thought. He never sought her out to ask to validate it or ask himself if this is believable. it sounds illogical but for some reason works well in the story.

I do think the show is becoming an LMH vehicle for sure cos Chung is being so subdued in these past eps... worried about her future.

It's great that HJJ accepts mermaid Chung... but it's Prolly so easy for him cos he has gotten the backstory... aka. It is Fate... plus he seems to just have such a carefree approach to stuff... living in the moment... flying by the seat of his charm...somewhat like Chung...

Wow, I think that is what it is the put me off about this drama the chemistry between our leads, they both are good actors and we can see that on how the portrait their characters, specifically for me LMH with his comedy timing really good but we have the leads together dont know sparks are missing. Beside that I think this week episodes were really good and grab my attention and now waiting for next week.

On a side note don't everyone feels like the story line between brothers will be like UF drama? Where stepbrother decided to be on mom side and how sad was his story, it gave me that vibe the moment he called Joon Jae asking to take care of his father as now he will take of his mother, that this will be his last warning from fake to real son.

I always like replying the chemistry comments cos I always have theories...

In a way... none of our characters are doing anything wrong.. . And personally I do feel some chemistry between them at times over shadowed by their hijinks

My theory is that they are both holding back because they are both in committed relationships or they are still not super chummy co-stars yet...

It happens... at times Like that i just remember that they are acting...I just enjoy the performance as much as I can. Cos I already like seeing them together!

I do hope the chemistry blows out by the finale!

Maybe it's that, the emotional distance. Like when I was watching Jealousy Incarnate, the chemistry was off the charts. But it makes sense because you see them (JJS and GHJ) BTS and they're having fun and look so comfortable with each other that it makes sense that they can nail the more intimate scenes. I haven't seen the BTS for this show but I imagine there's a bit of unfamiliarity here that comes through.
The comedy is great, the rapport is fun, hell the sageuk portions are amazing, but yeah, the romantic chemistry is a little... ok checked the kiss off our lists, what's next?.

"My theory is that they are both holding back because they are both in committed relationships or they are still not super chummy co-stars yet…"

Huh? Most actors and actresses are probably in committed relationships even if is not disclosed to the public. Holding back because of their real life relationships is a weak excuse. As actors, it's their job to make the audience feel they are the characters they are portraying and not actors acting in drama.

Required fields are marked *

This has to do with the story lines and the character of HJJ. He is supposed to be cold and unfeeling without showing outward affection towards SC. That's why SC even doubts about his liking her because he bickers too much.

With that kind of character to portray it's hard to show chemistry between two leads : One pushing the other away all the time.

But if you see the behind the scenes, I find that both leads are extremely comfortable with each other.

There is also one particular scene where HJJ was gently rubbing away the snow from SC's nose. I don't know why this was cut.

When Shi-ah pulled out a photo, at first I thought she was trying to set him up for a blind date to help him forget her. Nooope...picture of her to help him through his suffering. >.<

So the guard that brought the king's decree in the beginning is the same actor playing the detective that caught him in modern time, yes? I flipped back and forth for a bit in that scene and when it swapped back to modern with them in the car. I'm fairly certain, but not 100%.

I am so unhappy with the predictable who is the step brother's dad bit. I wanted to be WRONG about that, darnit.

I really like the brother, and I think what he's showing is common decency - "protecting" his mother doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to help her, he very well might get in her way and try to limit what she's doing. He's just saying that Joon Jae is going to have to do the work on their father's side of the equation.

In a way the brother is setting it up so that he has plausible deniability, but not in a bad way. He's giving Joon Jae the heads up that there's something really wrong, and indirectly stating that his mother is involved to the point that it's awkward. If Joon Jae finds out about the poisoning, he'll go after the stepmother full-bore. If the brother was the one with that responsibility, it would complicate things because he couldn't fix it without turning in his own mom.

All in all, the brother is stuck facing a near-impossible decision. I like the way they've framed his character too: he's a kid who had no father, so he reacted selfishly and jealously when he finally got one. But I don't think he was part of (or aware of) his mom's campaign against Joon Jae, and now he's realizing a lot of things he was blind to, including how badly his father was hurt by Joon Jae's leaving. He's also aware that their father values him, but is hell-bent on not leaving much inheritance to him. He seems like a generally good person who was raised by an amoral person, and who is now torn between sticking with his mother or forging his own, less lucrative but ethical path.

I like him. I don't think he and Joon Jae will ever be friends, but I think they could understand each other. The brother has gone out of his way repeatedly, now it's Joon Jae's turn.

Up until Blue Sea, I liked LMH's charismatic potential but then would absolutely hate something about the production he was in: BoF it was the writing, PT was better but still kind of disjointed, Heirs was the obvious part of losing brain cells whenever you unpaused it. (Faith I actually thought was a pretty good role for him, overall.)

But here's it's clicking together a lot more, which makes me think that maybe LMH is one of those guys with a ton of potential, so much so that it's noted in its raw form and has made him the brand he is today, but that no one's figured out exactly how to put together the complete package with him. Clearly he's better with experienced, talented costars. Clearly he's better with logical writing. But the drama world can't keep sticking him in situations where his charisma is responsible for pulling along the rest of the production, because it shows and ends up degrading his brand.

She's really good! Shin Hye-Sun. If you compare her role here to her character on "Oh My Ghost", it's like night and day - she's able to really portray the essence of a character. In OMG she was sunny sweetness and light, and here she's got a sour center that infuses pretty much everything she does.

I hope to see her in a lot more dramas; I get the entire marketing angle of kdramas but it's people like Shin Hye-Sun, the ones who built up their ability in smaller roles and then start getting bigger parts, who I think prove themselves enough to merit a lead role. Not to pick on Suzy, but sometimes CF queens get roles that they shouldn't - they should build up slowly through bit parts and learn how to grow before shouldering entire productions.

I was not impressed with the 2nd part of the ep (post rescue).
1st Chung went from a smart and clever women to a little girl obsessed with her crush.
2nd JJ mind reading and knowing how confused and insecure about his feelings towards her. It almost seemed like JJ is a little boy pulling the hair of the girl he likes instead of confessing.
3rd The kiss,
I was forwarding when I saw it the 1st time and SWOONED with hearts in my eyes and the whole chabang but when I rewatched the whole ep, I felt let down. The way it was acted, made it seem that he is doing just to sleep not for her or the romantic feelings he have.

On SC, while I hate her but are they to uglify her on purpose. I cringed every time she showed up with mismatched cloth and accessories and the last dress seemed like a punishment :D
I guess karma is a bitch :D :D :D

On the step brother,
He is pitiful but I was disappointed when he started to sway to the dark side.
And DAD, you sure have a talent of hurting both of your sons and letting them down.
I'm not big in comedy so I felt the ep was a filler somehow.

I'm not sure the "smart and clever woman" thing applies to Chung, or at least it doesn't rule out obsessing over Joon Jae's signals. She's a quick learner and has speedily acclimatized to a lot of human stuff, but relationships still stump her. I actually thought it was a sign of growth that she was trying to puzzle out relationship cues on her own, either through the internet or just thinking a lot.

If you've ever been in another country where the system/customs are very different, you know how hard it is to correctly value social cues and customs. How important is it that you shake hands? How important is it to tip at a coffee shop? Should you pack your own bag at the supermarket? Is your new friend going to think you're weird if you do X?

Chung's doing pretty well overall, and she's matured enough to want to sort these things out herself. She can't help it that Joon Jae's aware of her thoughts - and it's an interesting sign that he isn't telling her he can hear her, seemingly at least in part because he knows she's afraid of him seeing her differently. So he's just trying to reassure her without blowing her secret.

I really enjoyed this episode. I loved when Joon-jae started hearing Chung's thoughts because I did want him to have that advantage, but I also love how he is now being "punished" when Chung thinks too much. I like how that's the price he has to pay for the invasion of her privacy.

I don't think I've ever had a female second lead I liked in dramaland but I really like Shi-ah. She's a nutjob! From her wondering if Chung is a zombie to her delusions of grandeur where Tae-oh is concerned, she's really growing on me.

When I watched MLFTS, I thought like 'Hm.. They did good' but, for me KSH n JJH didn't look that great together. Both are gergous of course, but doesn't work for me. And suddenly I think about LMH then talked to my friend JJH must be really great with LMH and make perfect visual.
And couple years after that, my dream comes true...
I really love them together.

Negative light? It portrays Korean men in a VERY positive light according to Korean cultural values.

I appreciate this innocent aspect of Korean prime time romance and find it off putting when couples bed each other so easily in American shows.

Is it just me or does anybody else think this might be the last of light hearten episodes we will be having?
I think from now on this drama's gonna see many hurdles and much more complications.Hope they wont disappoint us by bringing more conflicts in and a quick wrap up of the story before the plot could even sink in on our minds.
i really really want this show to keep me interested in it as it is doing now.

I don't mean to compare but I love the romance here more than I did with My Love From Another Star. I may be in the minority to say this but DMJ's part in the romance always felt very distant, I mean I get that he's supposed to be like that but somehow he was always stiff in a way that I didn't like, while CSY was pretty much the heart and soul of that relationship. But here, the love between the two feels a lot more 'organic' and we get to see a satisfying progress in their relationship. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Joon-jae is literally more human.

Required fields are marked *

Wow, you can say that again! I actually thoroughly enjoy the relationship development in LOTBS, which I felt lacked in MLFAS. I love how both HJJ and SC are kth expressive characters, so both show equal feelings towards each other. Writing this out suddenly made my heart flutter thinking about their kiss. *blush*

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

You're right. Joon Jae is a real human. Both Joon & Cheong have expressive characters, so they may show equal feelings. However, this makes their relationship lacks chemistry because it doesn't feel deep imo.

DMJ is a different case. It is his character to be stiff and cynical about human world. He had started loving CSY long before she even knew it. DMJ kept all his feelings by himself and then started giving hints by rescuing her many times, becoming jealous, helping her, etc. That makes DMJ-CSY relationship become very deep and their chemistry gets stronger and greater imo.

Required fields are marked *

That's where I never really understood MLFAS. DMJ seems to have felt towards CSY, guilt because he was unable to save a girl 300 years ago who looked like her. He found her and realizes she is not the same person but he slowly starts to like CSY. But because DMJ was never very expressive, it came as a surprise to me when both of them started to cry at the fact that he cannot stay on earth long. This is the point where I am supposed to cry with them. However, because of the lack of expression or little relationship development, I was more shocked than anything.

On the other hand, HJJ in this drama already loved SC once upon a lifetime ago. Therefore, because of their bittersweet love and their longing to be with each other, their love transcends time and spaces. This, I say, is deep. To me, the background story deepens their love but I appreciate that we actually get to witness the progression of HJJ's love. Because this is not mere coincidence. It is not like he loved her because he remembered her, but rather, he grew to love her again, without any traces of his past love for her. Therefore, it goes to say that no matter what ill fate they will suffer, no matter how many times he will have to forget her, no matter how many times they will have to do this, he will find her again and again, and he will love her the same.

I would like to add to your comment.

HJJ and SC stimulates character change and character growth in each other. They love, learn, and teach each other. They've come a long way since the beginning of this drama. It's simply nice to see how love can change someone completely. To me, that is definitely deep love.

I agree that the chemistry here feels more organic...Chungie had taken a backseat to being more of the catalyst here like she literally was throughout the entirety of MLFAS...

I'm kinda missing that and want it back!

Required fields are marked *

I understand your point. I guess there are various versions of deep love then. If yours concerns on how love transcends through time and spaces, then mine concerns on how love makes DMJ sacrifice his life for his beloved CSY. His love also changed him completely (as @pearls stated about deep love) from a cynical alien to the one who can feel and care about someone.

DMJ knew that CSY wasn't the same girl from the Joseon era. So, he loved CSY not because she resembled the joseon girl, but rather, his love to CSY grew slowly as they interacted and knew each other.

I like your last part of writing; "no matter what ill fate they will suffer, no matter how many times he will have to forget her, no matter how many times they will have to do this, he will find her again and again, and he will love her the same." This somehow reminds me of CSY's lines in ep.19; "I had once wished that I had never met you but even if I could turn back the time, I would meet you again. We would have the same argument again, you would have fallen in love with me again, I would love you again." Gezzzzzz this one with the whole scene in the island is just so deep and beautiful.

That is definitely a sweet line and I still watch that scene sometimes. I liked MLFAS, and I found myself liking it especially the beginning 6-7 episodes and the last 3 episodes. But somewhere in between, I felt that the development of their love didn't showcase well, so that's why the middle was never very enjoyable for me. I wouldn't argue, the idea of their love is deep and at the end, I definitely liked it. It was just that I did not see a smooth transition, particularly from DMJ's part because CSY had always liked him to begin with. I had always wished that we were given more insight on his side, because the drama was excellent in terms of the plot but to me, it failed to show a smooth transitioning of DMJ's love. I also felt something missing greatly from the drama when CSY had to go through so much hardships but she never really changed. I never got to see her become a considerate celebrity. I was waiting for her to become a whole different person and someone much better on another level. But I never did see that. So I do agree, the writer wrote them a beautiful love story but somewhere along the lines, it didn't translate over to me. The ending basically saved them for me. That is just my opinion.

0

I meant to also say thay DMJ might have shown changes in his path about life on earth due to his love for CSY, but CSY never really did change due to loving him.

0

My biggest hang-up with MLFAS is that I don't find CSY likeable. I prefer the fresh, child-like mermaid to the vain, snobby star. Maybe I'll have to rewatch to see if I can recognize her growth. I'll be watching for growth in Chungie, too.

I find CSY likeable. She is such an iconic character in the dramaland. CSY is sassy yet endearing. Moreover, this role is what made JJH's popularity skyrocketing. Although, in your opinion, CSY might not change much in term of character growth, in my opinion, that makes her character consistent. It is not like her CSY character is a harmful one so she has to change into someone else. Therefore, nothing wrong with how the writer wrote her CSY character.

I like what you say about being consistent. If I liked vain and snobby, I wouldn't care if CSY changed. Truth be told, I like SC the way she is and don't care if she "grows." It's nice to have someone for everyone in dramaland.

THANKS A MILLION AGAIN, for the awesome recap! You know, I am just so focussed on the HJJ and SC romance that all the other characters can be wallpaper for all I care! Haha! But seriously, I do feel that Stepmum being 'flat' could be a sort of 'technique' to showcase how unfeeling she is.
My sympathies are with poor CH - sigh ...
BUT I am thinking (this is my first KDrama that I am following religiously and adroitly so I can't quite compare!) that we have a FANTASTIC writer here, and she (it's a she, right?) will weave her magic!!
And totally agree with all those endless useless questions asked in all girls' minds universally - whether that special guy they like REALLY likes them back or not!! Haha! But, it's a WONDERFUL 'punishment' for HJJ - HAH! And it wouldn't be in character, I think for him to SAY out the words so soon - he has lots of difficulties with trust and expressing love, considering his background, so even though he has realised that he loves SC, the writer will have to SHOW / develop how this VERBAL confession will come about. HJJ has NEVER let any woman 'to step beyond the line' (Nam Joo explained this to Shi Ah in an earlier episode) - he has never fallen in love or say 'I love you' SINCERELY to any woman - So of course, this confession of love has to come later, when other issues are resolved first.
And kudos to the writer for giving us a Christmas present - a REAL kiss (as with LIPS moving!!)
Lastly, I don't quite understand this - there are comments about LMH & JJH lacking chemistry- if these two are not chemistry incarnate, I really don't know what else is!! I started of liking JJH first because she is just so breathtakingly gorgeous - every shot of her lights up the screen, even when SC / SW was hurt, she just exudes this charisma (As Nam Joo would agree, haha!) but I am so very very impressed with LMH! He's a great actor - he's got the whole gamut of emotions down pat! His looks help but they are just icing on the cake! Now I REALLY need to go watch Gangnam Blues! I want to wait till LOTBS is over first because I still want to revel in the really funny and adorable HJJ for as long as possible. I am quite worried about KDR though ... and whatever has happened to the golden tailed mermaid?? Hope the story will focus on these 2 next week ...
In the meantime, have a Merry Blessed Christmas, JavaBeanites, GF and all commentators and fans!! Till next week!

Yes, they have great chemistry HHJ and SC. Better than DMJ and CSY. They make a great onscreen couple too.

I don't understand some saying that LMH is a lousy actor. He is as good as the other popular stars if not better. I was first really impressed with his acting in CH, 1st episode when he was the young teenager with scraggly hair. When he enjoyed his first Korean food. He talked with food in his mouth and spit out some of it. It was just so natural and real. His cheekiness when he rescued Bae Mun Duk from the money lenders. When his wet nurse died, the look on his face and anger he felt was daebak. Finally when he caused his father to lose his leg, he cried like a little kid. Just that half an hour at the end of ep 1, made me a fan of LMH forever.

Yes, you should watch Gangnam Blues. He was superb in it. I think he did not get enough credit for that role. When he murdered this one guy, he said that he had to put all he had in him to do that scene and he nailed it. The murderous on his face made him a very scary person. He can do comedy, romance, anger, sadness, tears, gentleness, action, jealousy, bravado, sageuk, and murderous intentions so well that it is unbelievable that some can say he is lousy at acting.

Calliep, thanks for yoir shang on LMH. He can act and he is not just and star..he is also an actor.

He put all his heart and sweat in the role he is given.

He suffered injuries in gangnam blue.. His toe nail and he was hit quite hatd on the back of his head in one of the scene..and i beleive many more. Look at the last scene he did in the railway tunnel..the pain he expressed in his eyes.

Yes it is a pity that he did not get many awards for the movies despite the great performance.

Minw, yes, exactly, the scene in the tunnel. I wanted to mention it but did not for fear of revealing a spoiler scene. Not only pain but regret. Also looking through the photgraphs scene. It was so poignant and sad. LMH tries not to overact, just the right amount of sadness. Comedy is another matter of course.

Yes, he should have got more awards. I did see two of the other movies in the competition and I think he was much better. A year before, another actor swept all the awards and his role was not half as difficult and not really memorable since it was not a lead role.

I have always felt that Lee Min Ho is such an under appreciated actor. I've read various comments talking about how it's a curse for him to look that good because people tend to not appreciate his acting. The problem is that most people start watching his projects with the mindset that he isn't going to be good, and only a few of them are willing to admit they were wrong to begin with. I also read some comments discussing how he's good at portraying the roles he usually plays but has no range. No range? In this project, where is HJJ in KDR? I can see no resemblance in character other than the same face. Like you mentioned, in GB, he is so different. I actually feared him while watching him kill ruthlessly. Just thinking about it gives me chills. He is nothing like his other characters in GB! Nothing! If that is not range, I'm not sure what range is.

Thank you for reminding me how great he was in CH. I was actually craving to watch it again so I am going to go marathon it now.

He did win the grand bell for best new actor and was also nominated for a blue dragon. Those are the two biggest awards in korea. Kinda like the oscars and golden globe. So i don't really care about hm not getting others since he was nominated for the main two and won one. Insanely proud. And he's role in gangnam blue was not underrated. He was praised by the critic. More than kim rae won. Can't wait to see him in more movies.

And LMH is one of those actors that seem to be getting better and better. And this is the perfect send off before he goes to the military. Leaves us wanting more.

I'm really happy to see there are some fans give LMH a positive comments, because quite a number of people try to avoid to admit his talent probably they just afraid he will fade their idols or just because their prejudice but he's just a very very good actor not mention of his good looking, specially his eyes expression is perfect, I remember in GB when he ride the motorbike his eyes show all the sadness and they are so beautiful, and in LOTBS he got a chance to show all different images and he nailed it. When he is crying my heart is broken and when he smile he melt my heart.

Thanks javabeans for the recap!

I enjoyed this week's episodes so much XD. I know that I'm really getting into a show when I make an effort to watch them raw first, so I can see all of the micro expressions. I found myself laughing out loud even though I didn't know what they were saying.

I have often felt like I was the only one who didn't get LMH appeal. BUT, he REALLY shines in this one! Its like it was made for him! ;) ( oh right, his character really was literally created for him). I'm able to see his swoonyness now..... and how his acting has matured.

And JJH! My girl crush! She's the cream of the crop when it comes to comedies or just acting period! She doesn't have to say or do anything, and she can emote from the screen. I was really impressed with her in MLFAS. And she practically stole the show in first part of this drama, but LMH is now showing that he can keep up with her......awesome chemistry these two have.

I love that Joon Jae can hear Chung's thoughts, whether good or bad. It helps keep him in check. And I love how he's consciously trying to be gentle and protective of her.

I know we have some very serious angst coming up, but I hope that they can continue to insert moments of hilarity in between to give us a light hearted breather.

Oh! And let's not forget that Chung's a bad-a** in her own right, and can toss and kick people across a room if she needed to. Okay writers? Don't forget! I understand that she was drugged in this one, but for any future mess that may be coming down the pike, don't forget!

Loving everything about this show. It gets better and better. Now the anxious waiting for next week begins (well, it sort of started last week)

Stellar acting by cast again!

I didn't shout out Elizabeth in the last ep... but her facial expressions had me going wwooww! And cracks me up how they call her the full Elizabeth...no Liz...Lizzy...Betty...Beth... etc. So cool!

This ep... was again just GREAT in comedy the most! It's not flawless of course...but I don't want to focus on any of THAT!

Super swoony kiss!

Chungie is getting too subdued for my liking...

I want her to go as crazy as she can... not Chung Song yi style... but why is she being so restrained here when Do Min joon didn't like her half as much as HJJ likes her here... it's so insane????

Thanks for the recap, JB!

I agree that I really like LMH in this show. I haven't seen him in anything else other than BOF since he isn't on my must-see list of actors. So, it's been a pleasant surprise here.

So glad that Chung spotted the pink octopus and looked for JJ plus knew to call him... And so relieved that the detectives believed JJ enough to take Chung's call and track down MDY. It was great to see Chung putting doubts in DY's mind whether or not to go through with tossing her in the water barrel. It was a good reminder that mermaids have defense mechanisms when it comes to unwelcome human contact. Thank goodness he got scared off and JJ came in time to take Chung home.

The whole scene with the detectives in JJ's house was funny. But I'm glad JJ managed to strike a deal with them to catch DY first before settling their fraud issues.

I knew that the mind-reading was gonna be used for amusement instead of convenience at some point, and I just had a hearty chuckle at Chung's constant stream of thoughts and JJ's sleepless nights. That's what happens when you just assume the girl knows how you feel without telling her straight up. At least the kisses at the end should be obvious enough for Chung? XD

The snacking scene was especially funny cuz JJ can hear everything now and Chung is just so darn good at everything. =P But she can't resist those snacks... LOL

SA and TO... I'd laugh if SA figures out it's really Chung that TO has a crush on. So funny when JJ got jealous of TO and Chung looking cozy.

I hope they won't make CH into a bad guy now that he knows Dad wants JJ to inherit whatever maximum amount is legally possible... I know it sucks for CH, but he knows his mom has been up to no good... *sigh* I felt for Mom when she saw Dad again... I wonder how the circumstances happen to tear apart Mom and JJ from Dad... I hope Stepmom gets arrested soon when the detectives dig deeper into those two cases.

I hope there will be an epilogue next time. I really like them!!
