Ji Chang-wook eyes swift return to dramaland with Happiest Time of My Life

Back already? Not that I’m complaining about having Ji Chang-wook (The K2, Healer) in another drama, but it seems like The K2 just wrapped up and already he’s looking to jump into his next role. Chances are looking favorable that it’ll be a drama titled The Happiest Time of My Life, and while initial reports stated that Ji Chang-wook had confirmed the role, currently the official line from his reps is that he’s considering it positively.

Hardly any info has been given about the story, so for now we’ll just have to wait and see, though I would guess it’s another melodrama, given that it comes from writer Choi Ho-chul of twisted melodrama Secret and slightly less twisted, slightly less melo drama Mask. I’m thinking the title may ironic in some way — there may be happiness involved, but surely there will be a lot more pain, no? Just a hunch.

Even so, what I do like about writer Choi’s dramas is that they do have very angsty melo elements to them, but they tend to be fast-paced, dramatic, and full of plot twists. They’re exciting melos, not the slow, tedious kind that can feel nigh unbearable sometimes.

We do know that The Happiest Time of My Life will be a fully pre-produced drama, because somehow dramaland keeps trying. I do hope there’ll be a meaty story, because while I did enjoy The K2 despite its excesses and flaws, I didn’t really think Ji Chang-wook got much of a chance to do a lot, acting-wise, other than upgrade his stunt work and fight scene capabilities. Those weren’t nuthin’… just, I’d kind of wanted more of everything else from him, but the story just didn’t give him a shot.

Writer Choi is currently working on the scripts, and plans are to begin production in March.

So is it really true now that he will be staying away from action themed dramas? :(

I think most probably! He had stated that when working for K2 he was too tired out because of the many action scenes. For the Lotte webdrama/commercial during the press conference he said he was disappointed to get the agent role again because he'd rather have a more normal character :') I guess he would probably stay away from action in the near future, sadly.

Plus he did Whirlwind Girl 2, K2, and the lotte mini drama and he already had injuries and strains while doing K2.

I don't blame him, he's got to go to the army and he's already really banged-up. Look at what happened to Choi Jin-Hyuk, he want into active duty knowing he had a bad knee, blew it out and got a medical discharge and he's had to basically live in seclusion so that he doesn't get nailed about not serving his full duty.

I think he feels many regrets over The K2 and wants to show a better side of him by doing a new drama. He himself said he has many regrets over The K2, like his character and loveline flow with Yoona (not saying he's disappointed with the loveline, but the flow or the manner in which the loveline presented is a bit lacking in his opinion).
So I guess he doesn't want to get typecast as action star + do a better drama.

Lmao Changwookie just admit that you were disappointed you didn't have love line with Song Yoon Ah in K2 ???? hahahaha! #jk

But yes I agreed his character should be written better. He can offer more. I don't care about his complaints if he is just a mediocre actor.

I liked him in K2. I did not like Yoona in that role. It was thru K2 that I first was introduced to him and since then have watched about 4 of his other flicks, with Healer being the best and way more satisfying storyline-wise, casting, acting and chemistry. I wish there was a Healer 2 in fact. Hope this new show is a romantic show because he is so good in that capacity.

I think he just want a variation in the roles he wants to take. He's an actor who wants to continue to improve his craft. He is not contented and doesn't want to stop growing. He said that in one of his previous interviews. So, if an actor wants to grow and improve, he won't settle in one role or genre. If you will notice, he has done various kinds of roles and genre. Romcom, action, sageuk, melodrama..he also acted as a villain in Five Fingers. I hope a can see him in a fantasy drama when he gets out in the army.

I believe he will still do action dramas in the future. But not now. He needs to explore different roles.

im just so happy that he will stay away from action for a while. i want to see him in different light plus K2 almost drained his energy because of TOO MANY ACTION. he will go to army and the least thing he could do before he is about to worn out is to away from action. hah

he's so good in action but i think he have something up from his sleeve if he'll do melos or such. im positive!

Yessss please! I did mentioned before that I was imagining if MGY played Anna in K2, maybe the writing of Anna will be much better and the perfomance will be great.

MGY has been absent from kdramaland for long time, we need her back. Or if not MGY, a good actress who can be on par with Ji Chang Wook's acting, if not better. Moon Chae Won probably a great choice too :)

How would the writing of Anna be better if MGY played her? That's out of her hands. MGY is a good actress, but even she can't magically make a poorly written character good.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Probably it can. In my opinion, sometimes the way the writer write any character also depends on how he / she see the acting chop of that particular actor. If I were the writer, this factor probably will come into my consideration as well.

And yes of course good actor won't be able to save a poorly written character and plot. But at least the acting still shine. Good example Scholar Who Walks The Night.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Anna is poorly-written character, but a good actress could probably makes the character more interesting.
Let's consider this, for example, Jin Se Yeon playing the female lead in Doctor Stranger. Surely the character is written poorly, but if, say a better actress like Kang Sora (the 2nd lead) or Kim So Eun playing that character it might be more interesting. Conversely if Dae Jang Geum's character was played by less stellar actress than Lee Young Ae maybe we'll never know DJG.
So in my opinion, a good actress should be able to elevate a character, even tiniest bit and I always prefer a good actress over a popular one.

Indeed. Ta Hwa was not necessarily better than Jung Hoo as a character, but Empress Ki did showcase a plethora of Chang Wook's acting capabilities. From whiny, immature and playful prince to the lovestruck and sensual emperor and finally (SPOILERS!! I think...) deranged and hysterical (which I think he did best actually).

He is immensely talented and I really hope he will get the chance to unleash the full extent of his acting chops in this show.

No, the "Only Son/One Family Breadwinner" rule was phased out because too many men that met such a description were taking advantage of the rule, and the military started suffering a steep decline in recruits. There are still exceptions granted upon severe family hardships and the like, but if you don't want to incur the seething wrath of the Korean public, you'd better suck it up and enlist anyway.

Long post warning: I never knew who JCW was until recently, when out of boredom, I decided to check out Healer since my youtube main page keeps recommending Healer OSTs. I liked Healer so I decided to lookup his other work and found Empress Ki. Wow, I totally fell in love with him as the emperor. In my humble opinion and limited Kdrama watching experience, his character in Empress Ki is one of the best-written characters I've ever seen (Asian or American dramas/movies). Complex and full of flaws. With a less skilled actor, he would be much hated but JCW elevated his role into someone you can root for and empathize with. His delivery is exceptionally nuanced and layered. It doesn't hurt that JCW looked so damn fine and truly exuded an "emperor-like" aura. This was truly the role of a life time for any actor.
I started watching the K2, purely just for JCW, but I could not get past episode 7. Gosh, I cannot stop staring at him, but even JCW's visuals can't overcome this poorly-written and poorly-directed drama. I don't like action movies/dramas. Usually, I fast forward all the action scenes, but I actually "watched" all of JCW's action sequences in K2 (up to episode 7, that is). I've been reading JCW's post K2 interviews where he reiterates how he regrets the development (or lack thereof) for JeHa and Anna's affection. First of all, I'm amazed that he is so honest and secondly, I cannot agree with him more. The K2 would be much more emotionally convincing (and probably get more viewership) if 1) Anna was given an iota of personality. The whole set up of a powerless and helpless girl yearning for daddy's affection is such an old, worn-out trope, especially in light of the strong female characters that we see recently in Kdrama land (Dr. Kang Mo Yoen in DOTS or Young Shin from Healer, as examples) AND 2) the drama provides more emotional development to JeHa's fascination and affection towards Anna. Their romance is completely un-natural and un-convincing. I keep wondering if maybe JCW could play JeHa better but I doubt he could do much with the terrible script and direction/editing. I still love him to pieces and hope to see his talent on display in his next project. Stay healthy, Oppa, with your reputation for action, you may yet slay the big screen in an action block buster in the future. But in the mean time, please hurry and give us some heart-fluttering, gut-wrenching, angsty romance.

Required fields are marked *

I actually love action dramas, but K-2 ended up being a problem for me pretty much for the same reasons you mention. Given this writer's history, I think he should stay away from romance. The problem is it is almost a given that most K-dramas are going to have a romance element. This writer (who did Yong Pal) doesn't seem very inspired in the love department. Two Weeks (love it) with LJG is the rare k-drama with hardly any romance but then it got middle of the road ratings so there's that.

Regardless, it would be great if JCW could get another drama done before we say goodbye for 2 years.

No sooner than DOTS finished, Song Joong Ki started filming the Battleship Island series with So Ji Sub. Gong Yoo had 4 shows in 2016: A Man and a Woman, Train to Busan, Age of Shadows and Goblin. I am thankful these actors that are so talented (and handsome) are serving us so swiftly with new shows because i miss the heck out of them after each show ends.
