Name That Drama: Good girls, bad guys, and a bait-and-switch

As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. When I think of chaebol blind dates, I think of every drama ever, so good luck with this one, guys!

    Hi there!

I would appreciate any help with finding this drama, since it keeps bothering me.

There is a boy, probably some kind of a chaebol or at least someone really rich, and his mother sends him to a blind date. He goes, but the girl (who is from an influential family) sends her friend instead. I have a vague idea that the friend was not all that pretty.

They go to a gallery and then to a restaurant. That substitute-blind-date girl causes some kind of embarrassing scene, and he kind of saves her. I believe the friend-girl falls for him because of this.

Later on, the boy finds out that he has been tricked. The real-blind-date girl meets him later (when she finds out who he is) and tells him she can get as many blind dates with him as she wants (because of her family).

I really hope I am not confusing two different dramas together right now. Sorry!

  2. Why is it always the hot ones?

There’s this drama that has been bothering me for a few years because I can’t figure out what it is. There’s basically next to nothing I know or remember about it, because I only saw part of one episode when I snuck out of bed to see what drama my grandpa was watching past my bedtime.

All I remember about it was that there was this one guy, a movie star or singer or something (I think he was a singer), who acted like an angel in front of reporters and his fans, but was a total jerk to his servants/butler. I remember he suddenly craved ddukbokki at a super posh restaurant, and by the time his butler ran out of the restaurant to find a bunshik food stall to get it for him, he didn’t want it anymore and threw his glass of water at the butler. Yeah, he was a real charmer (the singer/star, I mean). And he was hot, too.

Anyway, I know that I watched it in 2013 (it could have been a rerun, though), and I’m assuming it was on one of the big networks, because my grandpa was watching it. And I could almost swear the butler was from one of the Answer Me series. I can also vaguely remember some woman, who looked somewhat older than Jerkface, running around everywhere. Maybe she was the (typical, hardworking) female lead?

  3. Maybe this one might be the most difficult yet? We’ll find out

So I saw this video on YouTube with a scene from a drama where a guy has the girl in shackles in a dark and empty warehouse. The guy eventually shoots her. I also believe that she was wearing a light pink dress.

    Please help me!

  4. Wait, so is he a good or bad guy? A good/bad guy?

I was hoping for help with figuring out what the first drama I ever watched was. I was in China doing a foreign exchange year. I never got the name because I watched it with my Chinese mom and aunt, and it was subbed in Chinese. Neither of them spoke English, and my Chinese is pretty terrible, so the explained plot points I remember were: he is a good guy, she is a good girl, he is a bad guy, she loves him, and he loves her.

Things I’m sure about: It was a sageuk, and it was long. I saw it on DVD in 2007-2008, but it didn’t look super old. The good guy was in constable clothing at one point (wide brim hat with big black beads and red/blue hatband). The good girl was a maid(?), she wore white and green and had her braid vertical on her head with a red or green ribbon. The good girl could read and had to hide it. She might have stolen a book or maybe she was just hiding it. There were herbs. There might have been royalty involved, but I don’t remember any in the episodes I saw. Help? I’d love to rewatch it with English subtitles and actually understand what was going on.

  5. Concubines are the worst

I need some help remembering the name of a drama. It’s either a Chinese or Korean historical drama that was released sometime in the last six years.

I only remember one scene. The main protagonist is a servant/maid in the palace. One day, a concubine (or the queen?) requests that our protagonist deliver a message to someone. The concubine has actually already asked several servants to deliver the message without reading the message. However, they all read it anyway and learn that it says something along the lines of: “Kill the person who delivers this message.” The purpose of this is to find a servant who can be loyal to the concubine.

I think the protagonist reads the message but realizes this is all a test and still delivers it, thus winning the concubine’s favor.

    That’s all I remember. Thanks!

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

Wait... Now I'm second guessing myself. They're doctors though, the girl who sent her friend, her dad owned the hospital or something, and she was trying to go incognito at the hospital so she wouldn't get special treatment.

I hardly watch Chinese dramas but I'd recommend this if you like BBC Sherlock and Korean's I Remember You.
The female lead isn't as spunky though.

I haven't seen 50 Shades of Gray, and I haven't watched the last few episodes of Love Me if You Dare, so I can't be 100% sure, but I certainly wouldn't make that comparison...

I've liked what I've seen of LMIYD so far, and I think the comparison to Sherlock and I Remember You is more accurate.

it's safe to watch if you're concerned about 50 shades of gray. crimes solving, a psycho is there too. it might get a bit boring when you're halfway through. (and if you don't believe that people can communicate without any problem while one speaks english and the other chinese. I don't, so it became annoying.)

I was thinking Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace) too. The King loved the main female lead, who originally entered as a court lady and wore green then... but then through a bunch of other things... later re-entered the palace as a female doctor, who wore pink and light blue(?) as her uniform.

Ditto for Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace). There are lots of sections about herbs, and places where she was reading things she wasn't supposed to have access to.

Required fields are marked *

It is Jang-geum. The king wasn't in love with her until the final 10 eps or so (out of 50+). Her OTP since the start was a soldier of sorts played by Ji Jin-hee. He also played a king in love with a smart palace maid in Dong-yi. Maybe that's where the confusion occurs? :)

In She Was Pretty, the girl that ended up going to the blind date is the pretty friend though - if I am not mistaken?

0

Yes. #1 is not She Was Pretty. Anyway in SWP, it wasn't a blind date, it was an appointment with his long-lost childhood friend. Also, the girl who was supposed to meet him was not from an influential family.

Required fields are marked *

#1 is definitely Emergency Couple. Both the guy and the girl are from very influential/wealthy families, though not the chaebol kind, more like long lineage of impressive doctors/medical-field related experts. The girl, a secondary character played by Clara Lee, is the daughter of one of the hospital directors/owner of the hospital, I think? And I think she was interested in the guy before he ever went on that blind date that was supposed to be with her but ended up being with her not-as-attractive friend, but her interest was further piqued when her friend described how charming/heroic he was. Don't think he was every interested in her though, beyond a very casual attraction in like the first few episodes, then it kind of devolved into politeness and slight rudeness when his mother kept pushing the girl to him.

Thought #4 is Dae Jang Geum/Jewel In The Palace too
"she wore white and green"
Jang Geum wore white when she became a nurse.
She wore green when she was still a maid/cook.
But if the sentence means: she wore white top and green skirt, then may be it's different drama because I don't recall Jang Geum has ever wear such clothing.

"The good girl could read and had to hide it. She might have stolen a book or maybe she was just hiding it."
In Dae Jang Geum, she didn't have to hide that she could read, but I remember a scene she was caught in a library by the guy and it's like she was hiding her interest towards those books.

"There were herbs."
:D Jang Geum was exiled to palace herb garden and learning about herbs there.

I think #4 is Dae Jang Geum. She is a maid at the palace. The good guy is Min JungHo, he is a palace guard (if my memory's right) so he wears constable clothing.

Wow, a drama not a lot of people know about but that I know! :D I really think it could be this one!

#1 = You Are My Destiny! (2009)

It's a family drama and series (had hundreds of episodes) that ran every day during the week day. It features Yoon-Ah from Girls Generation.

The girl who substitutes for the real-blind-date girl is actually a poor girl who doesn't have a family. The rich girl was her "friend" in beginning but only to use her to go on the blind date. However, after the real-blind-date girl finds out who the guy is, she becomes the evil girl who literally does everything bad in the book of dramaland to sabotage the couple- from manipulating the guy's mom to hate the poor girl, lying to the girl and everyone else to ruin her reputation, chasing after the guy, etc.

This comment really stood out to me "Later on, the boy finds out that he has been tricked. The real-blind-date girl meets him later (when she finds out who he is) and tells him she can get as many blind dates with him as she wants (because of her family)."

In the drama, the boy does find out he's been tricked and the real-blind date girl manipulates him and everyone else to make it seem like the poor girl had malicious intentions and only wanted his money or something.

The real-blind date girl manipulates the guy in "staying" with her by saying the two families really want them together and etc. (The guy's mom ends up hating and mistreating the poor girl to the point of abusing and taking advantage of her for most of the drama because of the real-blind date girl's lies about the poor girl).

Ok. That is a lesson not to watch daily dramas. I think the plot has traumatised me. Moon lovers sounds tame in comparison.

Yeah I thought of You Are My Destiny when I read this. He was a Chaebol and she was the mayor's daughter. She acasually methe him on a plane and liked him, so when her parents set up the blind date she sent Yoona in her place to buy herself time to find her mystery guy. Yoona and the guy hit it off and go on more dates, then when the girl realizes that he was the one she was looking for all along she goes crazy and does all kinds of crazy second lead things.

My extensive sageuk watching finally pays off!

#4 definitely looks like Dae Jang Geum (Jewel In The Palace)
Jang Geum wore white and green uniform before later changed to white and red uniform. There are lots of herbs too and I'm not sure if there's another drama related to herbs if it's not in medicine setting. Ji Jin Hee is the man dressed as the constable, right?

#5 Empress Ki
Ha Ji Won is the servant.. Well I don't really remember the scene, but I'm pretty sure it's from Empress Ki. I've watched it at least 3 times!

Number 2 could be Trot Lovers. Son Ho Joon who played Haitai in Reply 1994 was the manager to the main lead Ji Hyun Woo, then to Lee Yi Kyung in Trot Lovers. I remember the scene that LYK ordered SHJ to buy ddokboki but when he bought it, LYK said that he doesn't crave it anymore and scolded SHJ that he didn't get it soon. Then he poured a glass of water on SHJ's head.
But the seriea came out in 2014....

It is funny how, that you could have watched hundreds of k-dramas , but when it comes to this 'Name that drama editions',you feel like being so lost, and re-reading the queries posted, thinking and banging your head , to remember from where you have seen that scene before and the mind just goes BLANK! You aint gonna remember a single thing. Wiped out from memory.

#4 sounds Dong Yi to me though, when she was still a maid at the Music Department her uniform is white and green. And she's not allowed to read because her status is in the lowest I think. There's herbs when she was helping Lady Suk-Bin, back when they were still on good terms, when she was framed up in the earlier episodes. And the King was playing disguise to help Dong Yi.
