Turn off the lights, the Goblin is coming

Okay, now that’s more like it. The first few glimpses we’ve had of Gong Yoo (Big) in his new tvN fantasy romance The Lonely, Shining Goblin have been pretty, but not all that different from any other drama hero he’s played. But in the newest teaser for the series, the spine-tingly factor has been turned up a few notches, and I’m suddenly very interested in this mysterious goblin who doesn’t want you to keep the lights on.

Gong Yoo stars in the new drama from the writer-director team behind Descended From the Sun, about the bizarre relationship between a goblin who wants to end his immortal life and a reaper who can’t remember who he is. Lee Dong-wook (Bubblegum) plays the amnesiac reaper, and Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap) plays a girl with “the fate of someone who should have died.” Innnteresting. I wonder if she has anything to do with the reaper forgetting he’s a reaper?

The teasers are frustratingly short, but this new one opens on a close-up of a candle wick with the warning, “Turn off the lights. He is coming.” Then the goblin appears, his face flickering in and out, and he says into the camera, “You will meet an enraged god.” Jeepers. I guess he’s not going to be a friendly neighborhood wish-granting goblin, is he? I have to say, I like the idea of a dangerous god as a hero if they’re going to play up the mystery like this.

The other promo teaser is a version that was aired during the tvN10 Awards, with the names of the star-studded cast and crew written out on paper, and Gong Yoo’s narration in voiceover: “There is a moment when somebody stakes a life and a god lingers and goes.” It’s hard to tell much from such short teasers, but I like the sad, mysterious mood that we’ve seen so far, and the idea that we’re entering a whole new supernatural world with its own gods and creatures and rules of life and death. Just don’t fail me on the rules, Show!

The Lonely, Shining Goblin airs Fridays and Saturdays beginning December 2.

I thought he was E.T in that getup ...
I really hope it's a good drama and not one that just runs on hype + actors.

Pssssh... It's Gong Yoo's halloween costume!

On the other hand, this look would've been complete had there been a flashlight held up under his chin.

Dressed as ET or a Sith Lord, it still looks just like Gong Yoo. I laughed at the silly and I worry about the show. But I'll probably still tune in because it's Gong Yoo.

Okay, but is he wearing a cloak in the poster images?

... getting my mind out of the gutter.

I'll come out and say it - at the very least, KES NEVER disappoints with fan service so I'm expecting lots and lots of shower scenes between Gong Yoo and Lee Dong wook, mmmkay? Not really expecting anything new from her, but I'm very hopeful these two and Kim Go-eun can elevate the drama.

Can KES do dark and mysterious though?

That's the question.

I'm scared it's gonna be either campy or melodramatic af.

I'm wondering if KES' style will translate well to cable, though. I like this cast enough that I hope it does, for their sakes.

I'm really interested to know if there's a scare factor in this show. The cheese and swoon is given, but I'm hoping for some scare tactics at least in some episodes. Would that be too much to ask from the writer?

Well, every one has the right to share their opinions just like you have. Personally I don't think this writer is terrible. She does come up with interesting concepts, but she seems obsessed with cramming clichés into her dramas that can make them hard to watch.

It's nice to express opinions, but when it's the same on every article on everything that KES has to do with it's just tiring.

Yes, exactly. I'm so tired of seeing the same comments over and over. We get it, you're worried about the writer/don't like her, etc... We read it all on the previous 10 posts about this drama. Move on, people. ???

Funny story: the are doing their overseas shots in a nearby city and there was a small mention in the local newspaper. It was titled 'South Korea's Brat Pitt is in town!' But they didn't mention GY's name in the title nor ib the first paragraph LOL

Can this Goblin survive the infamous truck of doom? Has this Goblin ever encountered Lee Jun Gi's Sageuk Cliff? Will the Goblin fall for a Cinderella heroine? Will the Goblin pull a noble idiot card on us? Can a Goblin end up in a coma and get amnesia? Does the Goblin have a birth secret?

So. Many. Questions.

I really loved the whole feel of the trailer but is it just me or does Gong Yoo's facial expression in the trailer feel really blank?

Idk, maybe I'm so used to him having open, playful facial expressions in romcoms that seeing him look so serious kinda threw me for a loop. For some reason I just felt this disconnect between his voice and his face where I didn't understand what emotion he was trying to convey (which is a first for me with Gong Yoo).

lol I know that makes no sense and it's probably just me, but whatever, just throwing the feeling out there x'D

KES did melo romance really really well in DOTS. Jin Gu and Kim Ji-won't romance was basically the only thing I absolutely loved in that drama and I get similar vibes from here which just excites me. I really hope that wasn't a fluke because Gong Yoo being hot and angsty with Lee Dong-wook beside him will just make my year!

I'll be optimistic and hope the new playground (tvN) does something for the writer (I haven't loved any of her dramas).

The teasers looks super promising, if I ignore the fact that the villain of My Amazing Boyfriend also has a cape obsession. His also comes with foreign films, cat stroking and maniacal laughter. Hopefully the fact that he's a goblin here will cover the fact that capes at night aren't mysterious, just odd.

the teasers don't really give away much do they? but hey, gong yoo + this writer = major draw. although coffee prince will likely forever remain my favorite work of gong yoo's, ever.

the title of this article instantly made me think of a britney spears song: "kill the lights! take 'em out, turn 'em off, break 'em down, kill the lights! don't be scared, make a move, see me now?"

this song has been on rotation during my long gym workouts. haha!

Think KES is a hack writer (the Korean writing version of Michael Bay) who does superficial fluff (and not particularly well at that) which appeals to the masses.

But going to give this a shot (despite my reservations) for GY even tho have been burned previously doing that in watching that romcom which shall not be named.

“the fate of someone who should have died.” Hmm... Interesting, indeed. Now I wonder if Eun-tak is going to have a near death experience and, for a chance at a second life, makes a deal w/ the Goblin/Kim Shin to become his wife. Like, contract marriage, but more supernatural and life threatening.
