Jealousy Incarnate: Episode 18

Oh, it’s so messy, everything is messy, how ever will they get themselves out of this one? This ill-fated triangle takes a battering as the share-house turns into a real-life, real-time personality test, and Na-ri is forced to examine her own motives. But is the choice really between ticking boxes and beating hearts, or something else altogether?

EPISODE 18 RECAP

Lying in bed beside each other, Na-ri tells Hwa-shin to quit drinking and smoking, and says she really would die if anything happened to him. “Sleep with me,” he says to her. He unbuttons his shirt and she puts her hand on his chest, where he covers it with his own. They gaze at each other, until Na-ri draws her hand back.

Touching her face, Hwa-shin leans in to kiss her, but she jerks back at the last moment and says they can’t break the rules. Nonplussed, Hwa-shin counters that she felt that moment, too, and uses Plato to argue that the natural attraction they feel towards each other is a sign that they’re two halves of one whole. That’s some slick talking you got there, bro.

He tells her she’s tormenting him and fooling herself, reminding her that she devised those rules in order to find an answer. He points out that that if she undoes his last two buttons, she’ll automatically find her answer to who she likes more, in a “necessary, sacred process”. Ha! How he can say this with a straight face!

Na-ri shakes off his hypnotic earnestness, and sends him flying to the floor with a kick. But contrite, she tries to stop him leaving the house, luggage and all. He breaks out of her hold, but spinning back on his heel, he returns to her and says that she’s the one who seduced him first, when he had wanted to leave her room. She says she only told him to stay with her, not climb into her bed. He yells that to a man, it’s the same thing.

Hwa-shin says that this house where she has her two men must be like heaven for her, but it’s hell for him. And he asks her why she’s holding onto him when he’s ending it now, just like she said. Sighing in frustration, she tells him it’s hell for her, too. She says sorry and grapples for his luggage, just as Jung-won returns.

Eyes brightening, he asks Hwa-shin if he’s giving up, and tells him he’s doing the right thing. Looking tortured, Hwa-shin stalks back in. Jung-won asks Na-ri if they fought, but she only sighs when he asks why.

Ja-young asks Sung-sook if she went to the movies with Pal-gang. Sung-sook says she asked her, and figures that Pal-gang’s decided who she wants to live with. Ja-young can’t believe it, “Why you?” she asks. Sung-sook takes exception to the question, pointing out that she’s the mother who gave birth to Pal-gang.

“Pal-gang is my daughter. I never once thought of her as your daughter,” Ja-young says, blinking back tears. Voice harsh, Sung-sook tells her to go ask Pal-gang herself, but Ja-young says that she’s too scared to hear the rejection from Pal-gang’s lips. She sinks to the floor, sobbing in earnest.

Na-ri crouches at Hwa-shin’s bedside, where he’s feigning sleep. She remembers him asking whether she really liked him and Jung-won precisely equally. Just as she’s about to touch him, he opens his eyes and tells her not to touch him.

Looking at him, she admits that she did feel something, but it still won’t do. “Get lost,” Hwa-shin tells her, turning away.

Upstairs, Jung-won intercepts her to ask when she was born, and Na-ri wonders if he’s going to consult a fortune teller. He says that his mom’s interested in her now, which he considers a good omen for them.

Pal-gang considers her dad’s final message (nominating Ja-young as her guardian), and sighs. She goes into the moms’ room and tells Ja-young to leave. “I don’t need you anymore. I’m going to live with my real mom,” she says smugly. Ja-young jerks in her sleep, and bolts up—it was all a nightmare.

The next morning, Na-ri takes happy possession of her new car. Struck by a thought, she muses that she can find out her suitors’ true personalities by getting driving instruction from them. Do you mean to say that you bought a car without knowing how to drive?!

We see her drive with them both: Jung-won instructs her lightly and teasingly, while Hwa-shin looks like he’s holding on for dear life as he yells at her. Na-ri’s inner monologue observes how extreme Hwa-shin is, when even Jung-won’s rebukes are pleasant.

A montage of comparisons follows, where Jung-won helps her carry shopping while Hwa-shin sits idly by. Another time, she deliberately throws the breakers to plunge the house into darkness. Jung-won coolly fixes them, and the lights come back on to reveal Hwa-shin on Na-ri’s lap, clinging to her in fear (really?). Na-ri thinks to herself that Hwa-shin really can’t do a thing.

Jung-won also helps with the housework, but this is one thing that Hwa-shin’s got, and they watch him obsessively wipe down every surface, which Na-ri thinks to herself is pretty exhausting.

Na-ri fills in her calendar, where she seems to be keeping a tally—of wins? Every day so far is Jung-won’s. Lol. She sighs for Hwa-shin.

Now at the movies, Jung-won is an attentive date, feeding Na-ri popcorn and crowding her laughing together. It’s a wholly different affair with Hwa-shin, who remains stiff and surly, although he finally accepts her ministrations of popcorn and soda.

Na-ri eventually falls asleep. Maddened, Hwa-shin seizes her head and mauls her…in his head. Hahaha. In reality, he punches the air around her and wrings his fists, while the big screen reflects his imaginary onslaught. In his mind, he dashes popcorn over her, kisses her all over her face, and then screams in frustration. Real Hwa-shin closes his hand over Na-ri’s, but pulls it back as soon as she rouses a moment later.

Back at home, Na-ri asks Hwa-shin for his birth date details, which he refuses to divulge. When he lowers his newspaper, she’s shocked to see him in his glasses…I think she just swooned a little. She keeps staring at him, and tells him never to wear his glasses in front of any other woman—only her.

Looking challengingly at her, he takes them off. Just as the paper’s about to come up, she grabs the glasses and swoops into the space between. Hidden from view, they argue as she tries to put his glasses back on him. “I told you not to touch my body,” he tells her.

Lowering the paper, he takes the glasses off again. Cajoling, Na-ri replaces them while he growls at her. Laughing, she leaves them low down on his nose while he glares and pushes them back up.

PD Oh and Announcer Uhm find Ja-young drinking alone, and she conscripts them into drinking with her. Ja-young asks them who they would choose between her and Sung-sook, if everyone else in the world were dead. Uhm easily answers Sung-sook, but when Ja-young refuses PD Oh’s first answer (“I’d die, too”), he picks Sung-sook, too…for her tough-as-nails survival skills. Hahahaha.

Oh says that although she’s hotheaded, she doesn’t hold grudges, and Uhm adds that she’s loyal and all-round cool. Ja-young slams down her glass and asks what’s wrong with living with her, when she’s better at cooking and cleaning, would treat them better and love them more. She bawls, and they try awkwardly to comfort her.

The two men bring Ja-young home, glad to find Chi-yeol and Dae-goo to pass her off to. But she snaps out of the boys’ hands when they mention that this is more like Sung-sook. Ja-young asks why she can’t get drunk. She goes noisily up by herself, throwing off Chef Rak who also compares them. The noise brings Sung-sook herself out, followed by a sleepy Pal-gang.

PD Oh calls Pal-gang the wrong color (“bunhong” which is “pink”, as opposed to Pal-gang/red) and tells her to take her mom (Ja-young) in. “Hey,” says Sung-sook, “She’s my daughter and her name isn’t Bun-hong, it’s Pal-gang.”

But Ja-young refutes her and says Pal-gang is her daughter. She turns to Pal-gang with a loving smile, and asks her to live together with her. Pal-gang sighs in distress.

A slightly drunk Soo-jung rings Jung-won’s doorbell, demanding to be let in, but the three housemates are asleep. Jung-won snaps awake and goes for the gate. As soon as he opens it, Soo-jung dashes inside, desperate for the bathroom, which Hwa-shin points her to.

Jung-won runs back in and Hwa-shin wonders in amusement if he should invite Na-ri to view this spectacle. Jung-won grabs Soo-jung as soon as she’s out, but she perks up to see Hwa-shin. Na-ri, also coming down, has to duck out of sight before the other girl sees her. Instead, she watches Jung-won carry Soo-jung out while Hwa-shin recovers her bag.

Once they’re gone, Na-ri comes out, relieved that they weren’t caught. Hwa-shin wonders if she isn’t jealous of Jung-won with another woman, but she replies that as a two-timing woman herself, she doesn’t even have any right to be.

But when he suggests he’s a better man than Jung-won in that respect, Na-ri scoffs that she doesn’t have to be afraid of him sneaking into her bed every night. Hwa-shin remains adamant that he was seduced, and then asks her if she’s not afraid now, then, since they’re all alone, and it’ll be a while before Jung-won returns.

Na-ri grows angry. “I didn’t know you were such a boor,” she says. “The idea that it’s game-over if a woman sleeps with a man once, isn’t that boorish?” She rips into him for his Plato-sweet-talking, and pretty much everything he did that night, repeating the same insult.

He explodes at her that she should be taking her anger and jealousy out on Jung-won, not him, but she replies that she really isn’t jealous over Jung-won. Instead, she scoffs about how Hwa-shin gave Soo-jung water and even picked up her bag. Disbelievingly, he asks if that’s what she’s jealous of, and she yells that that’s exactly it.

He launches into another tirade to tell her to go fight it out with Jung-won. But…didn’t she just confess being jealous because of Hwa-shin? She shouts at him in frustration, while he remains hung up on her calling him a boor.

He comes eye-to-eye with her and she asks, “Aren’t you confused whether you just want to sleep with me or if you love me?” She says that because of how cruelly he treated her during her crush, she doesn’t feel like she’s precious to him, and all that past disdain comes to mind now.

He says he likes her so much but he doesn’t know how to show her it, but she tells him that she can’t trust him: It could be that he’s just acting out because he doesn’t want Jung-won to have her, not because he loves her, she says.

“You’re not an easy woman to me anymore,” Hwa-shin says, but she counters that he treats her like one. On the other hand, Jung-won is trustworthy and constant, she adds. “Even in this situation?” Hwa-shin asks, demanding a reply. “Yeah,” Na-ri says easily. Haha, you’d think he’d have learnt to stop asking damning questions by now.

Meanwhile, Jung-won reaches Soo-jung’s house, where he deposits her at her front gate. He tells her angrily that if she comes to his house like that again, he’ll release the CCTV footage he has of her visits, which would ruin both her career and marriage prospects.

When Jung-won returns home, he goes straight to Na-ri and folds her into a hug. He tells her that it’s okay if she gets mad at him, but she says it’s fine. Well, this is awkward. She says it actually makes her feel a bit better about herself, and I feel a bit sorry for Jung-won as he so searchingly asks her, “Aren’t you…jealous?” Clasping her hand with a smile, he says it’s okay for her to be honest with him. She smiles tentatively back. Nope, still not jealous.

As Hwa-shin watches Na-ri’s news next morning, his imagination serves him with Na-ri-on-the-screen repeating what she said the night before: “I can’t trust you.” He paces restlessly, waiting for the others, and finally gives in to the devil, looking up his compatibility horoscope with Na-ri. He comes up with a measly 3 and even the computer tells him to break up. It’s worse when it scores a 98 with Jung-won. (Computer: “Get married!”)

Na-ri pops home to pick up something, arriving just as Jung-won exits the shower. Rather unfortunately for him, his towel falls down while he’s talking to her, and he freezes. Covering her eyes, Na-ri flees, and I repeat: awkward. Bad awkward.

Pal-gang has Chi-yeol, Dae-goo, Chef and Sung-sook assembled on the rooftop for an announcement. Once Ja-young arrives, Pal-gang gives Sung-sook the note that is her dad’s will, and Sung-sook reads it in shock. But Ja-young looks like the sun came out, and tearfully thanks Pal-gang and Chef.

Sung-sook tears up the note and argues that it doesn’t mean anything—what matters is what Pal-gang wants. Pal-gang looks from one woman to the other and blurts that she always did what Dad told her, and she intends to honor his last words, too. Ja-young leaps up and hugs Pal-gang, while Sung-sook, stricken, leaves. Pal-gang seems equally upset, especially when Sung-sook trips on her way.

Hwa-shin’s mom arrives at the broadcast station during Hwa-shin and Hye-won’s broadcast. She smiles at Hye-won on the screen, thinking she’s the girlfriend Hwa-shin intends to introduce. She bumps into Madam Kim at the elevators, and as they go up together, she confides to her that she’s planning to take Hwa-shin and his ladyfriend to dinner.

Mom finds Hye-won in her dressing room and invites her to dinner with them, which Hye-won happily accepts. Madam Kim, meanwhile, finds Na-ri, though her dinner invitation finds a much more nervous reception.

Hwa-shin bursts into the dressing room and Mom apprises him of her dinner plans with his “girlfriend”, while Hye-won smiles shyly. Bursting back out, Hwa-shin phones Na-ri (#1 on his speed-dial), urgently asking her to have dinner with him today. But she’s already leaving with Madam Kim. Telling him she’s busy, she hangs up.

On the elevator down, every time Mom asks Hye-won a question, Hwa-shin cuts her off before she can reply. Finally, he comes out with it and says that Hye-won’s not his girlfriend. But he said she likes him, Mom says uncertainly. He replies, “She likes me on her own. I don’t like her, she’s scary.”

He apologizes to Hye-won, but he’s still a jerk, and Mom thinks so, too. But Hye-won tells her it’s fine—it’s true that she liked Hwa-shin by herself. Since they’re still in the elevator, it’s a bit awkward when Mom asks Hwa-shin who he really meant to introduce.

Meanwhile, Madam Kim tells Na-ri that she had her compatibility horoscope read, and apparently she can’t fight it. But Na-ri argues that they’re not necessarily accurate. Madam Kim is puzzled by her response, but says that she’s really meeting her because Jung-won likes her so much, and she wanted to see her for herself. She rightly predicts Jung-won’s arrival to rescue her, and denies to him that she was terrorizing Na-ri.

Naturally, Hwa-shin and his mom pick this same restaurant, and she asks him why he can’t just date Hye-won. Hwa-shin replies that the other woman is way better than her, prettier and more warmhearted, “And most importantly, my heart belongs to her.” But Mom still scolds him for his shoddy treatment of Hye-won.

Hwa-shin notices Na-ri’s party right then, and a moment later, his mom spots Madam Kim. She goes right over to their table, and calls Hwa-shin over, too. Awkward City, man. Madam Kim asks where Hwa-shin’s girlfriend is, and Na-ri suddenly realizes what his earlier call meant. Hwa-shin doesn’t look at her, and takes his mom out. Na-ri looks forlornly after them, and Jung-won takes her hand and sits her back down.

At home, Na-ri waits to meet Hwa-shin, and explains Madam Kim’s unexpected arrival. Grabbing his suitcase, he says it doesn’t matter: “Let’s end this.” He leaves, driving away, away, away. Inside, Na-ri grabs her own coat and runs out.

Ja-young comes to check something with PD Oh while Sung-sook is on air. As the news goes to a report, Sung-sook comes over and confronts Ja-young, thinking she’s there to gloat. PD Oh and Announcer Uhm drag her back to her desk, and Sung-sook spits that she’ll go to court for Pal-gang.

Appalled that she should care so little for Pal-gang’s feelings, Ja-young follows her back to the desk, but has to duck down when they go back on air. Sung-sook gives her a savage kick, toppling her over. “You’re no match for me,” she says, pointing out that the “will” is hardly legally binding, and that the law will favor her as the birth mother. The women are about to scuffle, but PD Oh and Announcer Uhm tear them apart.

At the station, Hwa-shin heads for the night-duty room, but loses a contact lens on the way. He’s surprised at the sight of Dong-gi in a face mask (so am I), but otherwise ignores him. PD Oh calls Hwa-shin to his office with Hye-won, and Hwa-shin dons his glasses and heads there.

Na-ri also arrives at the station, heading in after seeing Hwa-shin’s car. Girl, you gotta turn the lights off! She finds his suitcase in the night-duty room, and Dong-gi tells her where Hwa-shin’s gone.

Hwa-shin reaches the office first, and Hye-won arrives, eyes burning. She tells Hwa-shin he went too far, asking if he enjoyed humiliating her like that in front of his mom. “Don’t mess with me today,” he says tiredly.

“You messed with me first,” Hye-won replies. Pulling him to her, she kisses him, glasses and all. Na-ri arrives just in time to witness it, and the bag drops from her hand.

COMMENTS

Does anyone else feel a tiny bit like the show is spinning its wheels a bit this episode? I feel like we’re treading the same ground that led up to Na-ri’s kiss with Hwa-shin a few episodes ago, just changing up the setting a bit. Everything about this episode, from the first minute, seems to prove that she definitely likes Hwa-shin more, and doesn’t actually like-like (lol did I actually say that) Jung-won at all. I’m relieved that she’s on the cusp of finally accepting what’s been obvious to us for weeks, because the level of awkward in that house was getting painful. I feel a little cheated, though, that we didn’t even get any quasi-family bonding moments—what about all that eating together and smelling each other’s poop?

I wonder if it’s even possible to untangle everyone’s hopelessly mixed-up motives, from the reason Na-ri proposed the arrangement, to the reasons why each man is pursuing her in the first place. For the former, was it really to break up with them? Was it to confirm her feelings? Or was it in fact to undo them? Or some combination of all three? As for the boys, I think their feelings for Na-ri are genuine, but some idiot sense of competition and territoriality has magnified their pursuit to an uncomfortable intensity. At the same time, I think Hwa-shin is justified in feeling played with, because Na-ri’s skinship rule leaves the balance of power unfairly on her side. If you’re having rules, it seems like it would be fairer (and more sensible) to have a no-skinship-by-anyone rule.

But here’s the thing, too. I’m sure Na-ri knows Hwa-shin is the one she really likes. She did, after all, nurse a three-year crush on him that she admits she didn’t succeed in killing. I’m impatient with the artificial protraction of Jung-won as a viable rival, with that lack of spark and liveliness in his interactions with Na-ri that’s had him shelved in my mind for weeks. As before, I can see the intent: He’s the very model of a modern man and just bursting with chivalry, but I’m really uncomfortable with his presumption, and the passive-aggressive way he has of whittling away at Na-ri’s agency.

By now, it seems more like a smokescreen to the real, more difficult and more interesting conflict of why she can’t pick Hwa-shin even though she clearly likes him more (by far more than 1%). When it’s so obvious their feelings are mutual, why aren’t they on the same page? There’s so much there to unpick—Jung-won is not the obstacle. Even the issue of the boys’ friendship is nearly irrelevant right now; that relationship is one thing, what’s between Hwa-shin and Na-ri is another altogether.

No, the real problem in Na-ri and Hwa-shin having a relationship is in the corpse of her crush that lies between them. She’s clearly scarred from the way he used to treat her, and what she said to him about not being able to trust him is really telling, because that’s the number one thing that their relationship lacks and desperately needs, if it’s to exist in any healthy way. “Being real” with her ceases to be a virtue in Hwa-shin, because that’s not what she needs. What she needs is a sense of security from him. If you think back to the kiss, it was the only time that Hwa-shin was impossible for her to resist, and if we examine what led her there, it becomes clear that there’s a lethal mix: not just a storm of mutual feelings, but he’d actually treated her well—unprecedentedly, swoonily well—all day.

It’s such a simple formula, but she’s been conditioned with negative associations between her feelings for him versus his treatment of her for over three years, even in the very recent past. She doesn’t feel emotionally safe with him, and he can’t undo that with a little careless wooing. With those memories and that hurt constantly rising to the surface and coming to the fore of every meaningful argument they have, it’s hard to blame her for just not wanting to start something with him, even if she has feelings for him. After all, she had those same feelings for him throughout her crush. He treated her like crap then.

The fact that he’s basically treating Hye-won the same way now says something about him that I’m not sure I like. Of course he isn’t obliged to accept the feelings of anyone who likes him, but he seems to take refuge in humiliating others, and that’s not a characteristic that makes me root for him. Hwa-shin really is his own worst enemy—he hardly needs Jung-won to show him up, he does a great job all by himself. The only thing that makes this occasion slightly less terrible is that Hye-won is a badass and won’t take it lying down. Seeing her crack was still a little bit painful, though.

Even seeing Hwa-shin break was painful, despite his buttface tendencies, because once again, that raw sincerity goes a tiny inch in redeeming him. I keep being reminded of the story of King Solomon and the baby; I feel like Hwa-shin proves his greater love and the seriousness of his emotions by refusing to play the share-game anymore, with an attendant understanding that love isn’t a prize to be won or lost. So he’s far from hopeless…but he’s also got a long way to go.

Speaking of King Solomon, I don’t see why the two-mom solution has to be so drastic. Of all the triangles in this show, shouldn’t this one be the most resolvable? Can’t they carry on living the way they are? Or if either or both women find someone else they want to live with, can’t they share custody like any other parents? I just don’t understand why Pal-gang can only pick one when they both have legitimate claims on her, and she clearly has important relationships with both of them. Don’t break the momance, show!

I LOVED the glasses scene...Hwa-shin is just so sexy and charming ? I also don't think he's a scaredy cat (I lost it when JW turned on the lights), he just obviously took advantage of the whole situation to hug Na Ri, hahahahaha #TeamHwaShinForever

I am getting annoyed with Pyo Na Ri's character, she's clearly seducing HwaShin and violating the rules, and when he's responding to her seduction she change her mind, she doesn't do the same with Jung Wo, she's been cheating with HwaShin while Jung Wo was left out. She said she like both but to me she likes Hwa Shin more.

I also dont understand why she cant choose when clearly she like HS more. Not like the boys friendship is the problem here.

Yes, I am annoyed by Na Ri too. She is stringing both men along. Hwa Shin has been such a jerk to her in the past that it's hard for me to muster a lot of sympathy for him, but what she is doing still isn't right.

Actually he was a jerk into her face, but in the background he did everything for her. He fought for her, when she was supposed to be fired because she was tipys during her weather forcast, presenting her ratings to Mr. Oh. He was worried sick about her during their stay at the hospital and wanted to send an ambulance to get her back from the station. He introduced her to Jung Won thinking that he'd be the better man for her, as he is sick and self-loathing to the max.
From the very beginning there were subtle signs how much he really liked her. In Thailand, during the shooting of the commercial Na Ri walks toward Hwa Shin and Jung Won. It is there first meeting among them all together. Hwa Shin tries to act cool and looks away from her, but at the same time opens another button of his shirt to present his manly chest. Hilarious!

Hwa Shin represents what so many women find irresistable in a man. A hard shell you need to break to find the soft core. He built an armor of self-loathing and Na Ri will be the one to make him feel worthy, because he really is.

(Did anyone else notice the evil laugh at the end of the bed scene in the beginning after the plato monologue? The background sounds are fantastic in this show!)

Hehe, you have sharp eyes. Btw, do you know what made him into NR? I keep wondering...

Don't know what made him be into Na Ri or when, but my guess is, he was into her already before the show started.
In Thailand he did this unbotton the shirt thing and I doubt, this is subconcious like the women and their hair behind the ears thing.

During their stay in the hospital he said to her: 'You've got a terrible taste in men. Otherwise you would not have fallen for me.'
He dislikes himself so much, he does everything possible to drive the woman he loves away from him.
When did he realize it is love? The second he had to witness Jung Won kissing Na Ri. And now we have Na Ri realizing how she really, really feels deep down inside when she witnesses Hye Won kiss Hwa Shin. Well done, show, well done. :)

0

On second thought, I think he is attracted to Na Ri, because she got a warm personality. He is drawn to her as much as he is appaled by icy cold Hye Won.

0

Agree with you. Guess, as JW was smittened to her warmth, innocence, eccentricity, as well

Love your post! Indeed, Hwa-shin's appeal is not of the swoony variety, but in a sense is rather old-fashioned cuz he won't tell it to you in your face, but will do many things for you to prove he cares. He's a man of action, haha.

I do think he really showed that appeal last episode. Even though he was clearly bothered by her partner's behavior in the newsroom, I love that he didn't try to swoop in with some blatant rescuing and just smoothly offered his coffee to help diffuse the situation.

0

Haha.. and i have been crazily smitten..

0

Yeah. It's the appeal of tsundere characters. You have to work to win their affections, and when they do give you their love, it'll be intense. (///∇///)
That said, Hwashin's 'tsun' mode is way too strong. We're seriously missing the 'dere' moments. (。>д<)
It's pretty exhausting for Nari to be in love with such a character because she will have to beg for each crumb of affection from HS. C'mon Hwashin, get it together!

Actually I think Hwa Shin will be a very affectionate boyfriend. He was so soft and tender after the kiss in the ward and when his mom forgave him and called him her 'baby' he was so, so happy.
He will be like putty in Na Ri's hands. Looking forward to seeing it!

0

❤❤Newbie, merin, chandler ??

An extra ❤ for newbie’s Hwashin will make an affectionate boyfriend comment coz reading it made me very happy.
He sure was glowing with happiness when his sis in laws called him ‘baby’ and as you said he was nothing but warmth and tenderness after their kiss.

0

Haha, reading it made me happy also :) I completely agree that Hwa Shin can be very affectionate. I really hope he'll step up and show that side of himself when they get together.

0

Haha I am really waiting forward to the sweet "after kiss" HS. I miss him !
I am sure he I'll be everything we want him to be

0

Omg Newbie, thank you thank you thank you. I have been reading the comments for some of the past episodes and Finally your comment prompted me to reply. I wholeheartedly agree with your point of view. I have felt, since the beginning, that Hwa Shin really liked Na Ri. When she had to do those ridiculous poses while doing the weather he didn't agree with it and criticized the director for allowing it to happen. The fact that he was watching her weather segments proves it more in my opinion. When he first saw her in Thailand, he had as much of a moment as she did. He's the one that first glanced (then stared) at her when she was doing his makeup. I could understand him not feeling worthy of her and doing what he can to make her not like him. But his feelings toward her can be perceived. When the guys were in the elevator talking smack about her and how much she liked Hwa Shin and then she got on, I felt their comments drove him to say something rude to her, not so much for his sake, more so because he didn't like people talking about her that way. I know he went about it all wrong but I believe his motivations were more noble than what he was given credit for. On the other hand, I kind of understand Na Ri. Her mind tells her JW is perhaps the reliable choice. But her heart...there is no denying it. If she had a crush on Hwa Shin for 3 years even though he didn't show her any return of affections, how can she not be downright madly in love with the guy now that he is showing her he likes her back (in his own way). I'm sure she does feel something for JW but not enough to compete with Hwa Shin. I also don't care for some of JW's personality traits. When Hwa Shin recognized his love for Na Ri, he didn't pursue her out of 1)respect for his friend and 2)because he thought she had really moved on and knew it wasn't right to pursue her when she was finding happiness with someone else, regardless if that someone else was his friend or not. The only time he pursued her was when SHE confirmed that she still very much cares for him. JW, on the other hand, said he's never given up on anything HE wants. No concern for what she wants. Pretty childish. Now, I know some may not agree buuut, I'm sorry, how many months have you dated to have developed such deep emotions for her? I mean, I know you like her but now you're not giving up and are talking about marriage? What is your realtionship with her based on? And crowding her like he did in episode 18 is not the answer. Him cleaning for her and not letting her do ANYTHING does not a relationship make, and yes Hwa Shin has his own issues but they certainly don't minimize JW's actions. I LOVED that Hwa Shin left the house. Enough was enough. In my eyes he comes out as the the better man. Hopefully next episode will start moving in the direction of Na Ri recognizing herself just how much she loves him. I also hope JW will step it up and when its time to recognize defeat, he takes it like a man. Just my...

I noticed it, too. I felt that he subconsciously preened when he undid the top button of his shirt:) and he uncrossed his legs. Isn't it a body language that he wants the other person(NR) to be included in his circle?

I had to respond to the comment about the background sounds. I watch this while my boyfriend sits next to me on his phone.

He does not watch the show at all, but all of a sudden he starts laughing much to my surprise (I mean, he can't understand Korean so he's not getting the punch line just by listening) and it's simply because of the background noises.

This show is a lot of fun to watch, the Main characters are all so enjoyable to watch and like Saya says, the details, down to the background, are all spot on.

So glad I picked this one to watch.

Well I for one I prefer Jung Wo's character. Sweet, direct, respectful, humble about the way he helps out, driven, and knows his own mind. Yeah, he's rich, but even if the roles were reversed (HwaShin isn't exactly poor), I'd still go for Jung Wo. Jung Wo's wealth just shows that he has a LOT more to lose if his family doesn't accept their marriage.

I can't understand women who prefer men who play games and never tell you they want you until it's too late and just expect that you'll change your mind because they think they're god's gift to women or something (*cough* HwaShin *cough*). I know she'll end up with HwaShin (they focus on their relationship the most), but I really hope this one proves the kDrama tropes of the third wheel wrong and she ends up with Jung Wo.

I think, she is playing hard to get. She was crashed when back then HS once said he couldnt be with her because she was easy. The word easy was repeated several times through eps, so I think it should have meaning. Being easy must be really traumatic because now she assumes sleeping together is a game over to HS.
When HS claimed dating HW back then, NRs very first word, HW surely not an easy woman.

what is "clearly seducing"? asking someone to stick around so they can talk while she's clearly hammered? how is that "clearly seducing"? especially after hwashin said all proudly that he doesn't touch drunk women. that was all talk?

i'm deeply uncomfortable reading some of the comments here implying that nari somehow owes skinship to either one of them bc they have feelings for her. a woman's body is not capital or an object to be bartered with. and these so-called rules that she's breaking has been broken many many times already since they entered the house together, for example, one of the many times when the male leas grabbed her arm, touched her hand, or sat on her lap. these rules are not written in stone, and expecting nari to uphold them while hwashin and jungwon are completely cavalier about respecting the same rules is messed up.

It's my opinion and the way i see it, each one of us had his/her own perspective for things, you don't have to agree or be uncomfortable!

asking HwaShin to stay beside her on the bed is seducing, she knows very well that he wants her, what kind of guy can lay beside the woman he likes without doing anything, i can't blame him, even a girl would want to touch the man she likes.
And the glasses scene it was like a couple flirting with each other, i thought they would kiss, in reality they would, the setuation was tempting for both.

I am not saying what she's doing is wrong, she likes the man so it's natural to want to flirt and touch, but what annoys me about the whole setuation is the guys, they both like her and this is hurting both of them, especially when she's attracted to one more than the other.

'(...)what kind of guy can lay beside the woman he likes without doing anything(...)'

A decent kind of guy. Especially, when she is drunk.

But Na Ri played with fire, that I must admit. Albeit not by asking him to stay, but by telling him, that she would die if something happened to him. That is not something you say to just anybody.

Well I don't feel too sorry for the boys because HS deserve to grovel a LOT for his treatment of her and for JW it seems to me as if he doesn't really see Nari as what she is and he doesn't make an effort to.

The theater scene was telling they were having two drinks and one popcorn and JW was nearly forcing Nari to drink hers without seeing and watching her, he was enjoying the movie alone. The feeling they share are so not on the same plane.
Meanwhile with HS they shared the same drink and most importantly he was looking at her, watching her , seeing her. And this time she gave the drinks while adjusting it to HS. And when NR fell asleep he stopped seing the movie (#TeamHwaShinForever)

Lol Dont know if I'm tripping but with a drama so meticulous on little thing it seems real
JW needs to stop seeing Nari I'm his head and really try, how come he never tried to sneak some time alone with Nari ? No need for skinship if he doesn't want to cheat but time alone is allowed

Yes! Jung Won does everything a nice guy is supposed to do, but is it really genuine? The movie scene was too much. He just couldn't leave her alone. The wedding proposal in front of his mother is another example of too much too soon. He is forcing himself upon her and it is covered by his 'good' intentions.

In the movie scene Hwa Shin otoh is trying hard to keep up appearances and his true self is only shown when she's asleep, when he tenderly holds her hand. This man needs the image he built for himself so much and that keeps Na Ri away from really seeing him and his affection. But soon this nut will be cracked.

I'm annoyed as by her as well. She's clearly favoring Hwa Shin and letting him break the rules. She shows no affection for Jung Won any longer, so it's obvious that she's made her choice. I think it's incredibly mean of her to continue to give Jung Won hope, and to do what she's doing with Hwa Shin under his roof. If she can't go to Hwa Shin yet, that's one thing, but she shouldn't hold on to Jung Won as insurance. Jung Won has been effectively pushed out.
People are upset that he's the 3rd wheel in this love triangle, but they forget that Hwa Shin is the one that horned in on their relationship- which wasn't cool. He had plenty of time to declare his feelings and only did so once Na Ri had moved on with Jung Won. At that point I feel like he lost rights to declare his feelings.

Of course, there are multiple ways to view this situation, but I'm admittedly biased. I don't hate Hwa Shin, but in real life, I could not see their relationship being healthy. And Jung Won hasn't been fleshed out enough and given enough screen time with her any longer to really compare them seriously. He started off well, but they've slowly retracted him from the equation.

I'm with you here. Clearly Jung Won is the second male lead but I had high hopes for the writers after seeing the first few episodes. I thought that they would rise above the second male lead trope and flesh out Jung Won's character more to give him equal chances as Hwa Shin in winning Pyo Na Ri.

While Jo Jung Seok's portrayal of Hwa Shin is breathtaking and Hwa Shin's character is fun to watch and interesting, I'm still not sold that he deserves Pyo Na Ri yet. I was hoping for his character to mature but after 18 episodes, we're still stuck with the selfish Hwa Shin. As for Pyo Na Ri... I love her work ethics and her dedication and love for her family but I'm having a hard time watching her in the last four episodes.

Also... slightly bitter that we haven't seen much of the high school trio (esp Chi Yeol) or gotten any questions about Nari's stepfam (and where the hell is dad anyway?!?!) answered. More Chiyeol and Jayoung interactions please!!!!!!!! I live for the moms at this point!! I love them so much!!! They're so much fun when they're together, and especially fun when they get along. also!! I really love the King Solomon analogy you used, Saya! I was trying to explain to a friend why I thought Hwashin loved Nari more (and vice versa) and I think it's his unwillingness to share her love; how it's all or nothing with him, which really showed the strength of his love for Nari.

And as much as I love Hyewon, I'm also actually really confused by Hyewon at this point. Does she really like Hwashin? What are her intentions? Who was the guy she was kissing last episode? Was it just the humiliation she felt that drove her to kiss Hwashin? Why DID she kiss Hwashin? Where does she get her hair done? So many questions...

I love Hye-won! I wish she were the OTP with Hwa-shin but maybe that's too much blunt-talking for one relationship.

I think the kiss is a couple of things. She's made her interest in HS clear for ages, but she told him to sort himself out with Nari and held back on pursuing him. But now it's WAR - she's not going to hold back any more, and you can consider that kiss as the first shot fired. She's going to go after him properly now, Nari or no Nari. The only thing I reeeeally hope doesn't happen is her sassy badassity getting downgraded to classic b-lead. That would be awful.

I thought her hair looked a bit too orange on the news screens. Such a gorgeous girl looking so bleh! How!

SPOT ON.

i know some people are uncomfortable or annoyed with the idea that NR is being wishy washy especially when its SOO OBVIOUS she likes HS more... but I can totally understand why she feels the way she does. even the OST supports it LOL its like she can't help but gravitate towards him and is attracted to him (who wouldn't? GODDD) but she keeps questioning his motives because of their past. I think that's totally fair.

also, i agree that HS can be a jackass but i really do feel like his intentions are never meant to be evil or purposely mean. I feel like he has one track kind of mind, so even when it comes to love, all he sees is the person that he likes/loves. I too was kind of ehhh at the way that he treated HW, but in all honesty, i'm not sure how much she likes HS. I think it was more of a "im upset because you humiliated me in front of your mom" kinda thing. HW is a really cool character don't get me wrong, but the drama hasn't shown that she's super into HS yet.

Yes!! I honestly feel that whole episode with HS being this swoony person was such an important moment. But I think part of why HS struggles right now is because of his hurt that NR isn't completely his.

NR is completely understandable in her reasoning, though. I can't blame her for hesitating or falling back to the safety net of JW when she remembers the past. Still, she's allowed moments of weakness when she's drunk or caught up in the moment (who wouldn't when that level of intensity is on you??). It does suck for HS though because he does feel like he's being played.

I'm so conflicted about how HS handled HW this episode. I love her confidence and I felt really angry on her behalf, but, at the same time, she did bother me for the first time this episode for not correcting the misunderstanding with Hwa-shin's mom. She's a smart girl & I don't buy for a second that she didn't understand exactly what was going on. This doesn't excuse Hwa-shin's behavior in the slightest, but I do at least appreciate how he cuts through the BS. I just wish he could learn to do it with more tact. It's a shame because, in general, I don't think he's actually that excessively rude on a regular basis. Recent events have really been bringing it out in him though.

For one thing, I really like that the show isn't trying to sell the whole "love can change/save a man" ideal. Because Hwa-shin is still very much a work-in-progress.

0

You make a good point. I guess I'm so used to kdrama females being polite to moms to the point where they never correct their misunderstandings. I assumed it was meant to parallel NR's situation a bit as well.
The difference being that like you said HS is the direct type of guy that cuts through the bull. I just thought the way he said it was just terrible for HW though because it made her look like nothing.

I think we're used to HW being direct herself that we didn't expect her to go along with his mom's assumption. Mostly because she's so cool about her feelings too.

0

I think maybe hwa shin's handling of hye won was to make us compare it with Jung won's handling of soo jung where he was not mean to her but definitely dragged it for long letting her assume they were going to get married and all. Even though hwa shin is mean to hye won he doesn't let her assume anything but that doesn't excuse his behaviour, it may also show us that he is serious about na ri. But, if I were hye won, I would have probably slapped him but that being jo jung seok, I can understand that hye won couldn't have helped herself! ;)

Kudos to Na-ri, I would of broken the rules and caved way before the Plato explanation, which would have been devastating because Hwa-shin pleading his case to get laid is hilarious.

To me she clearly sends signal she is into him. She does not want to let go when he is about to leave. She is constantly worried for him than for herself.

I think, she loves him more than he does to her. HS's all or nothing does not apply with NR, where in her case she never could leave him behind, though she is being wishy washy.

She knows too well HS' qualities by now and her expectations drive her mad at him.

Na-ri pulls out all the stops when she goes full-on crushing mode. At an average, she and Hwashin probably bumped into one another at least 4x a week. Imagine if she did that for an entire year, let alone an additional 3 years even if he was stationed overseas -- she has to have had so e form of contact or then again, it was one sided so she was okay liking him despite the distance apart. That's dedication right there.

I've also been confused on that timeliness. Because even Jung WON asks how he could let her have a one sided crush for three years. So it definitely sounds like she crushed on him for 3 years. The math doesn't add up.

In the elevator, he just said it as it is without thinking it through - "I'm scared of her" lol... Tact and consideration is what he was lacking there.

Funny though, coz just yesterday we were talking about how teenage HwaShin seemed to be a thoughtful, considerate guy based on the way he treated his crush's friend. But I guess even the most considerate people people have their bad days where they just snap.

I hope her saying if anything happened to him she'd die isn't foreshadowing! Seems like if she decides on him first, he's gonna die because there are too many episodes left to resolved itself quickly. This show keeps surprising.

But NR does want the lesser version of that with HS and that's a hint isn't it? That she likes HS more because while it's becoming nice but too nice from JW and is wanting from HS?

0

I think the bit that's 'wrong' about his behaviour is how presumptuous he is with Na Ri. In public he touches her as you would if you were a serious couple. He introduces her to his mother as his future wife without discussing it with her. It takes away her choices. Where Hwa Shin is basically wanting her to choose, Jung Won seems to want to make it a fait accompli (Going so far in public and leaving Na Ri with no choice but to accept him in the end). That's what I don't like about Jung Won, and if Nari liked him it probably wouldn't bother me so much but in this case it really does. I love Jung Won and I think he's fantastic but I don't like the way he acts with Na Ri in public.

Underneath all that chivalry, JW has the tendency of being very pushy and suffocating in his actions (another one would be his insistence that she uses banmal with him although she doesn't feel comfortable at all).

0

I don't approve of Jung won's behaviour but isn't it essentially what Nari does too? She was constantly invading Hwashins personal space even when he told her not to. I know he likes her secretly but she's supposed to respect his words too. Like when she hit with her icecream...she was all over him trying to remove his shirt. She was sorry, yes, but unbuttoning his shirt in public?! Just think about their interactions and reverse the gender.
She was also quite mesmerized by Jung won initially. Maybe she'd have fallen for him too if he had ignored her hehe?
I like Nari but in the relationship department she's still a noob.?

0

At this point, I think all Jung-won wants to do is win.

0

At the movies..Nari was to Hwashin what Jung won was to Nari. What do you make of that?

Nari has always subjected herself to please Hwashin, I think its become second skin to her; Jungwon on the other hand knows that Nari is usually the pleaser so he does the gentleman effort of pleasing her, she recognizes it but then anytime Hwashin is in close proximity, the Jungwon slate gets wiped clean and he has to start all over again, whereas Hwashin picks up were he last was. That's really the nature of their relationship; Jungwon is dead thoughtful but Hwashin's burning passion trumps any Jungwon card being dealt. It has never been a fair game, it was all about giving a chance.

And Jung Sang-hoon cracked me up so much when he saw him wearing them "you look stupid again" (totally referencing to YoF isn't he?), "hello stupid", "bye stupid" but there he was, wearing a ridiculous face mask himself, pfffft. Btw he needs more screen time.

i adore hye won!!! it hurt to see her crack but she tried to hide it so well. i will be gravely disappointed if they decide to make her into the equivalent of jung-won's fiance in this relationship. i need that kiss to just be a one time kiss of her basically telling him off. also, i need her to remain her badass-as-if-I-could-give-2-f***s-self. i love her.

Seeing her crack like that made me dislike Hwa Shin even more because it shows it's clearly how he truly is.

I also don't like the show trying to sell his jealousy and territorial behavior as 'passion' and caring more about Na Ri. And being the better love. The fact that Na Ri is overly jealous just means she's damn insecure about him.

yea i can understand where you're coming from... but i think the show isn't necessarily romanticizing his behavior either. I mean yes he had a few redeeming moments but usually those were isolated from his shitty behavior.

i feel like the show is being real with showing all his faults. i mean even NR is expressing her distrust in him despite how much she likes him.

This drama's intention (as shown in the initial previews and marketing material) was to show HOW ridiculous people can get in the name of jealousy and i feel like its done a really good job at it LOL i think it's hard though bc with romantic comedies the main male lead is usually supposed to be a little more easily likable but HS it actually takes some effort to grow to like him haha ITS LIKE WERE ALL NARI as viewers. WE LOVE HIM AND THINK HES THE HOTTEST THING ALIVE but its hard to trust him.

also, i think HS has the capacity to be better if NR gave him the opportunity. so far there hasn't been a single moment where HS didn't have to fight with the idea of NR being with some other dude. i feel like once they officially "get together" things could be a lot different.

HS was so nice and love worthy in ep 14. The writer needs to show more those good sides of him to convince Nari and all of us here but it's going to be difficult to get those good sides of HS when he's so frustrated most of the times with his love situation with NR. Nevertheless, I don't think HS is a bad person (for example: he gave a ride to NR when she had difficulty fetching taxi in the early episode, he defended NR in front of her complainers even when he didn't like her at that time; he remembered JW's favorite dishes in details, he kept his promise not to tell NR about his feeling in the beginning, he drove NR back to JW and convince NR of JW's qualities, etc). He seemed to be very principled (ex: disclose his bro's bad business, didn't take NR sides when Dir Oh and Ja Young was arguing regarding the impact of the shooting location to NR's availability to audition, etc). It's so interesting that he's willing to do what he think is right even when it comes back to bite him afterward (losing family or losing the audition since he helped NR). I find it as a good quality that he accepted the consequences of his actions without fighting or sticking it out to other people. If HS heart is indeed very selfish, I think he will often remind NR of the sacrifices that he has made so that NR can audition but he didn't ever bring it up even once. It seems also that he will help if it's really indeed necessary (been thinking why he was not willing to help Ja Young and SS to change the lightbulb and I dislike that kind of guy who is not helpful. But now I'm thinking that he probably will help these ladies if they indeed need his help). For sure, HS is very lacking of social and communication skills (why in the world a 36 years old man doesn't know how to respond tactfully to other people is beyond me). However, social and communication skills are actually something that can be improved quite easily as long that he's willing to change. Aren't we all always in need to improve our social and communication skills anyway? This HS character is really one of a kind :)

Completely agree, Y. I also keep remembering him with Beom. It surprised me, but I think he'd actually be good dad material? I need more scenes of them together.

I get that people like her character, but she was forcing herself into a situation by exploiting his mother's misunderstanding. Her style is to come on like a tank. Aside from the main love triangle which I very obviously have a side already, WHY can't PG pick both moms? I LOVE WHAT THEY HAD ALREADY. Why isn't it possible for her to live with BOTH? (Esp since she never really had any interactions either way with either of them in the first place.) (I just really want the moms to keep being super close </3

My hope is that PG will realize what is good for her, not what her Dad wanted for her. And what is good for her are the Moms. What would be even better is if the Moms set aside their desire to be the one Mom to rule them all, and join forces to be incredible, forever.

Aside from this drama being great with the NR-HS complexity, the situation with the Moms is just so refreshing. Ties in with the show's theme of dealing with the messy ties that bind and all that goes with it.

Mm... I was thinking, if we had seen the interactions among these characters before knowing who the leads are, we would decide Hyewon is perfect for Hwashin, because she doesn't take his shit and she would make him (just by being with him) a better and more mature person. I'm not sure about Jongwon and Nari though. So I wouldn't mind if this drama had been about Hyewon and Hwashin, and Nari had a personal development where she forgot about Hwashin and became awesome in her career, and later on she would be able to start a relationship with another man in more... sane (equal?) terms.

But ok, this drama is the way it is (and it's awesome!), and of course I want Nari to end up with Hwashin. Previously people commented on how she was a stalker, etc., in the first half of the drama. Well, isn't he weird when it comes to romantic relationshios as well? So in that sense I think they are perfect for each other (they kind of "derserve" each other). In real life I can see this relationship ending in divorce after a series of fights, but since this is fantasy I'm sure it will work out ^^. I just hope Hwashin matures a little bit, treats Nari well and shows it will last. Sigh, JI is ❤❤❤

Funnily I feel Hye Won is the least fitting person for Hwa Shin. They wouldn't balance each other and she would for sure not make him a better man. They would fight like cats and dogs, because she got nothing, that he wants. His life lacks love, tenderness and warmth. He is still convinced he doesn't deserve them. Hye Won is by far not the person that would or could give him those things.
They might work together as an announcer couple presenting news, but would compete all the time to be the best.
Na Ri's first phantasy in ep 1 was her and Hwa Shin as a team doing the news. And I really hope, that this will be the end of this show. Both of them in a loving private and professional relationship, because both of them deserve it.

The thing is this. After nursing a very unhealthy three year crush that included stalking, staring, and virtually giving no space to the guy, he gives in , realises his 'love' for the stalker Na ri when he sets her up with his bff. Now she knows it and simply can not run into his arms because, luckily she has matured a bit. Regained her self worth , better job and hence struggle because she cannot forget how terribly he treated her during her crush time. Ju won is just a foil for all these delays. She wants to give it back to him for the hell he put her in but when in love with the same idiot, well, her heart struggles . Hence this back n forth on nari's part. The problem is we just get bits if this real issue, like her expression when she lay bare how he treated her before n hence cannot trust him. That was is the core problem. Hwanshin is , God, a very narssistic guy and he needs this treatment but the thing is the show does portray tackle this head on like it should. Hwanshin alwYs gets away with his nastiness, and everybody ends up swooning over him. Nari, the audiences n hye won who should have given a good verbal cast off to him at the end. Man that guy needs a huge kick.

I don't understand why holding her hand is wrong when she's asleep?

The other stuff is meant to show his frustration that he wants to kiss her/ hold hands/etc but he's holding back. It's a bizarre dream sure but he never actually touches her in her sleep except to hold her hand.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

He's kissing her all over in the dream as she is asleep. The dream could have been both making out that'd be fine. In reality he holds her hand as she sleeps but takes away his hand as she wakes knowing she will not like it. He's desperate for getting physically close to her but her rules don't permit. Hence all this one sided touchy feely stuff from him. Which doesn't feel right.

0

I feel like whether she needs to have been awake in his dream sequence or not is a matter of interpretation. Plus it would look worse if he's beating her up in his dream while she's awake? This way it's meant to portray frustration not actual abuse. And if she were awake in his dream while he's kissing her, it'd be a fantasy as she'd be kissing back not a frustrated daydream.

Also he lets her hand go because he's struggling to show affection not because she won't like it. NR might say it's against the rules but she wouldn't dislike it since that's exactly what she wants from him.
Of course he's desperate to be close to her...that's a given for both guys. JW is all about following the rules because to him his weallth, manners, and gentleness should be more than enough to win her over. He's all about the couple-y affection that NR has said she enjoys. HS has never been that guy so I can't see him starting that now. He wants both and it kills him not have that.

I don't think Dad wrote that will for no reason. He lived with both women and if even after all those years and even after being in a coma his judgment was that Ja-young should be Pal-gang's legal guardian, then it's obviously for a reason. I personally find it upsetting that no one is respecting his wishes. It's very disrespectful and wrong imo.

I loved the talk about Plato! It's an great speech to give to Na Ri, but it's also a subtle reference to Jo Jung Seok's performances in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. One of the most important songs is "The Origin Of Love" and it tells this same story. Here's an old performance of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVxyzrLx-mY

I saw him play Hedwig back in the spring and it was amazing. I'd love it if they could work in a way for him to sing it in the drama.

Okay, move on to a more serious topic. Watching montages of those three living together made me realize that Hwa-shin is the kind of man who wants someone to take care of him, but doesn't know how to ask for it. Fortunately, Na-ri is stubborn enough to still do that for him no matter what he said or how he reacted. Definitely not someone I want to entangle with in real life. In drama though, he's strangely swoonworthy.

Required fields are marked *

I found the JW vs HS montage interesting to watch because it highlighted something I started to notice last episode. Even though Hwa-shin was one of the first people to suggest two-timing, it's clear that he doesn't know how to handle this game they're playing (though, really, this is true for all of them). He pretty much already reached his limit the moment it began.

And I can't help but feel that part of the reason he is so ineffective at proving himself husband-worthy this episode is because Saya is completely right. He is feeling way too passionately about Nari to abide by any sort of 'rules' at this point. Jung-won, on the other hand, is fully in game-mode & putting all his efforts into winning her. This is why Hwa-shin and Nari are pretty much stuck. She wants him to step up and act more like Jung-won, but if JW is always there to fulfill that role than she'll never get to see how HS would have acted if they were really in a relationship. But Nari is never going to trust him enough to start one unless he shows that he's worth the risk.

I do have to appreciate that there's definitely a "what you see is what you get" vibe with HS. This living arrangement is having opposite effects on the boys, with one putting his best foot forward & the other putting forth his worst. Haha, I know it isn't fair, but at least with HS, I know what I'm getting into. Maybe it's because I had a boyfriend that was very much like JW at first, that was wonderful during that psuedo-living together stage (when you're practically moved in, but aren't really) before any of the real faults began to show (and they did). It was the guy that I thought would be difficult to live with that I ended up striking a nice rhythm with, probably because we had to work towards it together.

I really loved Nari's speech about him not knowing if he wanted to sleep with her or if he loved her. Because as an audience member we do see more, but from Nari's perspective that's a valid question to ask! & it honestly does disturb me how Hwashin acts sometimes... when he forced the one kiss & she slapped him, how he's not gonna "take advantage" of a drunk girl but suddenly he's trying to convince her with lectures about Plato... that kinda stuff is MESSED UP. I can understand Hwashin being a jerk is realistic in that there are not black & white people IRL, but I'll take a rude personality over someone crossing gross boundaries like that any day.

Not sure what the point of moving in together was. Jung Won hasnt had any semblance of an equal chance in this week's episodes.

With you on the momance! They were getting along fine honestly. I don't get the need for a decision either. But I must say Jayoung's analysis that a lawsuit has no respect for Ppal-gang's feelings is spot on. Sung sook is not demonstrating good mom judgment there - just seems like she wants to "win."

Whether NR, after did something wrong in the locker room with HS, she went to JW, told him Sarangheyo, lol, because JW said it first, then also told him to break up and not seeing each other anymore. And, she also did the same thing to HS, right? But the two man insist to do what they want to do, make her two timing, lol. While some people find NR's character is wishy washy annnoying, coward, or blahblah. I cheer for her. I am her team, team PyoNaRi. Hahahah.. I empathise with Na-ri's conflict between the two guys this episode. Because as much as she likes Hwa-shin, all of his quirks and habits are going to be unbearable when they're dating. Hwa-shin is his own worst enemy sometimes, yet I do appreciate that the core of his personality remains very real and more or less true to the character we've seen over 18 episodes, so there's none of that "true love changes the bad boy" trope in play here. Whatever little changes Hwa-shin makes are thus more rewarding than any grand swoony gesture because you see the effort it takes for him to do it. He's a work in progress, still very rough around the edges, but with the capability of changing for the better even though he may slip back to his old antics by force of habit or as a defence mechanism.

I do get why Na-ri can't commit to him as yet, because she's worried that he wants her only to prevent Jung-won from being in a relationship with her, and also all that baggage of her three-year-crush, which was never properly addressed. The thing is, no relationship is a 100% ironclad guarantee of happiness, and Na-ri surely knows this no matter which guy she chooses. She really needs to be honest with herself and decide whether she can take what Hwa-shin can offer, because I feel he's been wearing his heart on his sleeve for a while now and she's seen the best and worst of him.

Hye-won didn't have to accept mom's invite, but that doesn't really excuse how Hwa-shin treated her. I hope she stays classy to the end and not descend into bitchy second lead territory cuz she's been awesome so far. And, it's odd but I'd like to see Soo-jung give Jung-won a piece of her mind someday (I dunno why, but it might be fun to see).

Jung-won's obvious delight at the possibility of Hwa-shin failing at this cohabitation thing is really getting on my nerves. Also, I believe Jung-won pulled that restaurant stunt instead of his mother, as a further means to entrap Na-ri into thinking all will be well after marriage. It just seemed too neat and too good to be true that his mother had a sudden change of attitude towards Na-ri.

That said, I doubt we'll be able to completely escape this, considering how Hwa-shin has done a pretty unremarkable job of taking care of himself. Just no dying. And NO noble idiocy if his health takes a turn for the worst. I will flip tables.

Na Ri is a very smart woman. She knows, like all people much older than her do, that love and passion are fleeting. What really stays between a couple over the decades is friendship. No one being with his partner for 20 years or longer thinks in passionate terms about him. And if you shared nothing more than passion you'll soon realize that you have not much in common to build a life on.

She is evaluating if Jung Won's friendship is enough for life or if Hwa Shin got more to offer than very obvious sexual attraction and a difficult character. She will soon realize, that Hwa Shin is the real deal as they are true friends sharing his secret and got the passion on top.

I'm actually really disturbed by Hwa Shin's behavior at the beginning of the episode. How did the writers ever think it's okay for him to try to emotionally blackmail her into sleeping with him? He basically tried to GUILT her into sleeping with him by telling her she seduced him first and getting pissed off that she changed her mind (to him anyway), and she pretty much had to KICK HIM OFF HER to get him to leave. That's so, so messed up. And because this happened in the context of a rom-com drama, it pretty much romanticizes rape, or at the very least, reinforces rape culture. What a horrible message to send out - "he's trying to force her to have sex with him but it's okay because he's loves her so much that he can't repress it".

yea i thought that was a poor move on the writer's part...

i will say thought that i think it was mainly for the sake of comedy (not that rape is ever funny) in that they wanted to highlight how ridiculous HS was being and the whole speech being a reference to the past musical that he did (Hedwig). it was definitely poorly executed :X

yilin, I completely agree with you. The beginning scene was ver disturbing to me, and I would say it was even triggering. That is suc classic rape culture - for one, she was drunk. And two, regardless of how drunk/sober she is, she can and should be able to refuse a sexual advance at any point in the encounter and have that decision be respected, even if they were in the middle of having consensual sex. And that line about how it was her fault because she seduced him first...oy, rape culture 101.

He has been quite vocal about his desire for sex, but that scene was terrible. The moment he climbed on top of her, my brain started screaming. "what? They kind of addressed it with Nari's speech AND yet they still could delve more into that behaviour. *Shudder*

Genuine Question. Obviously you should be able to turn down sex at any point and that decision should absolutely be respected, but is the other person allowed to be frustrated? And if so are they allowed to express their frustration?

I find the notion that Na-ri was seducing Hwa-shin a bit puzzling too. At most I think her signals could be mis-read as initiating. Because Hwa-shin here and in the locker room scene does this thing where he basically explicitly says I want to make a move, if you don't want this to move forward, don't touch me and/or leave. I can see why some people would find this behaviour problematic. For me personally though the bedroom scene didn't cross any lines.

Can’t see any issue with the locker room scene - Two consenting adults, knew where this was heading, explicit ‘warnings’ given. But they both wanted it to happen, so it did.

Bed room scene - I think people have taken offense to this bcoz one party was drunk. And also the fact that there were mixed messages. Like Hwashin initially says that he won’t do anything to a drunk girl. But after Nari asks him about his seroma and says that she’d die if anything happened to him, he is so touched that he goes back to his ‘sleep with me-be mine-and let’s end this cohabitation torture’ mode. And after all the pleading in Plato’s name didn’t work, he DID push her forcefully down on the bed. (And rightfully kicked off!). I guess far too many women around the world (and I assume many men too) face the issue of their “No” NOT being respected. So, I guess such scenes will rightfully make many people upset.

For me Hwashin’s ardent pleading bit was part of the humour. I only raised an eyebrow when he pushed her down on the bed even after she asked him to leave. But then our show’s heroine is no weak kitten, she throws him out of bed. And he did get the message then. And leave. So I have no issues there. For me personally, there were no serious crossing of lines that stopped me from enjoying the episode.

Agreed. I would just add that intoxication doesn't prima facie mean that someone is incapable of giving consent. Imo, while Na-ri had consumed alcohol she was fully cognisant and aware and would have been able to provide valid consent. Sure her assessment of the situation may vary from if she was sober, but if we deem all sex where alcohol was a factor in decision making to be non-consensual then half of all hookups would probably be considered sexual assault.

Also consent can be provided both verbally and non-verbally, (ie what happened in the locker room when she decided to stay) which I guess is why everyone's interpreting the bed scene differently.

0

I see no lines crossed.

For what its worth, Hwashin got tossed/kicked out of the bed and landed on his butt. Karma is indeed, digital.

Let me chip in here with a translation note, because 'seducing' carries a pretty strong meaning in English which I don't think the Korean implied, but I might have muddied the waters by choosing to translate it that way (I actually wrote 'lure' initially, and changed it afterwards). Hwa-shin used two words, 유혹하다 and 꼬시다 ("유혹했잖아"/"꼬셨잖아"). The former carries the meaning of tempting, luring, or seducing, and exactly how you interpret it would depend on the context, while the second is slightly milder - still tempting, but more in the sense of coming onto or leading someone on.

So the way I saw it, Na-ri did lead him on - she made him stay when he wanted to leave, she touched him first, and in a pretty intimate way. And then she drew back and he invoked Plato in an effort to get her to undo those last buttons, which I saw as him asking her to make the choice to go further. It's hard to say if he really would have gone further by himself, because he was barely on top of her for half a second before she kicked him off. It's murky waters. Still, I reckon he deserved the ungraceful ejection, but he's also not off the mark about her mixed signals.

In conclusion: guhh so messy!

Thanks so much for the recap Saya! Evoking Plato to undo buttons should really be a regular phrase. I was referring to commenters mentioning that Hwa-shin had been seduced by Na-ri, nothing specifically from the episode or recap.

0

@Ren - no problem! I was thinking about it from the earlier comments, too (and questioning whether I had unwittingly endorsed rape culture O_O), and realised that a clarification was necessary, since part of the discussion seemed to hinge on my choice of wording.

0

...it saddens me to think the Plato line could actually work on me. How to woo a nerd 101: Invoke ancient nerds.

0

Rofl. Don't worry, Saya. You're definitely not the only one who would have a hard time resisting such a well thought-out, philosophical seduction. It's so silly and yet terribly convincing...

0

It’s hard to say if he really would have gone further by himself, because he was barely on top of her for half a second before she kicked him off. It's murky waters.

But see, that isn't murky waters. Na-ri told him she didn't want to sleep with him, and she told him to stop. He then climbed on top of her and was holding her down with his body and to get him to stop, she had to literally kick him off the bed. That's super rapey. You can't say "Welp! Rape didn't happen because she kicked him off the bed, so it's not rapey because a rape didn't ultimately occur!". Escaping from a rapist before they actually rape you doesn't somehow negate the wrongness of their actions. If he'd gotten his way, he would have had sex with her, and it would have been without her enthusiastic consent. That's rape; just because he didn't complete his objective doesn't mean he wasn't being sexually aggressive in an unwelcome way.

The argument that Hwa-shin -- and some DB commentors -- have made is that "a man being in a bed with a woman is the same as sleeping with her". That is a specious argument that is blatantly untrue. Men are 100% capable of being in a bed with a woman without having sex with her. This rumor props up rape culture by making it seem like men "can't" control themselves, so if a woman dresses "provocatively", or is alone with a man, or is in bed with him, rapists can say that they "couldn't help themselves".

People who aren't rapists stop trying to have sex when their partners them to stop. They don't have to be bodily shoved off the bed. They don't fall back on the "But you said a touching, flirty thing, so I must have you" excuse. They stop, end of.

Look, I love how JJS is portraying Hwa-shin. I find his character obnoxious but genuine and charming at the same time. I like him so much and want him and Na-ri to have all the love (and ALL the sex). But I can't condone this scene: it's sexually threatening and disrespectful, and I am disappointed in the show's writers for writing it the way they did.

From what I see is two adult who are attracted to each other, wanting to go there but held back by logic. Like the ID and the Ego, in this case, HS is the ID and NR is the Ego. Simple as that, when two are in love, mixed signals are send, and what happen cannot be categorized as morally right or wrong. Heck, love is messy. As long as no one is offended by it...all is good!

Wow, I never thought what Saya mentioned in her comment concerning NaRi does not trust HwaShin. IMO it's true that's what makes her act like this to HS.
I like HyeWon, very pretty. Her sudden kiss to HS, mostly because of her anger. And she is always very straightforward anyway. It will not be a triangle anymore with their love stories. Hahaha.
For this episode, JJS really burns the screen! If it's not JJS, I don't think HwaShin with very annoying character and his story with NaRi can be very addictive for viewers!
Do not forget the glasses scene that was very cute and all, and how pitiful it was seeing HwaShin in restaurant scene? All emotions are there without needing lots of dialogues!

Reading all the analysis here is so much fun!
I just wish the writers do the right thing. Ending should be just like the start...Nari and Jung Won flying to their honeymoon!
Nari should pick JW since she is already doing the pros and cons game. She should take the kind JW regardless if he is assuming too much and using his rich background (who wouldn't want to use his credit card and spend all his money?). Didn't she say that she was attracted to JW at first sight anyway?
She only got confused when she learned that Hwashin now likes her. She really needs to look back and feel how Hwashin treated her before then forget about him.

So now the sriptwiter is telling us that all along Nari still love HS and can't let go of her feelings for him after 3 years crush.

Scriptwriter - why make JW the "sandwich" for Nari and HS love tensions and also with the cohabit idea and now involving HW in the last scene kissing HS ?

and also why must JW be naked in front of NR ? Not necessary right ?when you had already confirm the OTP .

My unbiased opinion HS looks older with that round spectacle.

This drama should suffice with 16 episodes to talk about nari 3 years wishy washy crush but not about the a cancer patient ordeal to be in love and overcoming obsticle being alive.

What was the rules for if they were just going to break it? Initiate. Not initiate. It doesn't matter to her if HS makes the moves on her because he likes her more. I started as team Jw, then I went to Team Pyo Na ri. My happy ending would be if she ended up with the Chef from Pasta, but that's me dreaming. okkk but the real question is, why did Hwashin kiss Hyewon back so passionately? If it was because he was hurt by Nari, I thought he would've been the one to initiate the kiss. When Hyewon walked into the room he looked like he didn't even want to talk to her let alone kiss her as some "revenge" against Nari. So is it that Hwashin has subconsciously developed some feelings for Hyewon?

I think it's too soon to say whether he responded passionately or not yet. It does look like he had a sort of automatic response, but I'll be interested to see whether the ending shot isn't just how it looks from Nari's perspective. He could still pull away once he comes to his senses. If he did respond, then I still think it's likely that he only did so because he's in a bit of a vulnerable place.

I'm 100% with Saya's comment this episode. Na Ri is afraid, and I understand that that may come across as wishy-washy to some people. What she did, she was just stalling, although seeing Hye Won kissing HS at the end of this episode might make her want to reconsider whether stalling was the wisest route to take.

All the hilarity aside, I think this show mimics real life quite well. Love and relationship can be messy, really messy indeed. This may not always be the case, true, but I have seen so many cases in real life where the heart just cannot be taught logic, even though the mind has been screaming to be heard ?

I hate that the 2 mothers start fighting over Ppal Gang again 'though, when it comes to a child, why does it have to be all or nothing as well?

Am totally on board of Saya's comments, what a messy, messy tangle here. Am still loving this show, but hopefully next week Na-ri would choose Hwa-shin, coz dragging this will be way, way cruel to Jung-won. Like Saya said, am also missing the living together shenanigans (wish it had been in Rak Pasta building); getting only measly montages when expecting comedic gold, hmmph.
Also, the wear - not wear glasses scene was so cute (and so telling of Na-ri's heart, c'mon...) but I don't remember seeing Hwa-shin wear glasses at all before these two last episodes. The glasses seems so much a prop inserted when necessary to touch upon ex-girlfriend feud, though am loving the alter-ego cameo from BOF Iceland, babo Jo Jung-seok ^_^
Am also confused why the mothers can just live together with Ppal-gang like currently. Does this mean Ppal-gang will move away with Ji-young? And after watching this show, whenever watch news in TV, I'll be wondering whether there is anybody squatting or lying prone somewhere under the announcer table...

Thank you saya for the recap! Your comments were spot on. It is just slightly comedic (or tragic? That would be inline with this show) that you always get to recap episodes that ends with a cheating kiss (but I am not sure whether this a cheating kiss considering the context of the show, lol). Now I am totally expecting jung won to see na ri and hwa shin kissing by the end of episode 20 and start to move on (hopefully).

Also, I never find anything wrong with this show basically because I enjoy it so much, so I am glad to have a voice of reason among us. Yeah, I would have liked to see some family bonding movements between the three too but i didn't think of that while watching the show. I have my own interpretation of 'trust' being discussed here which might be different. Hehe..

NR mentioned that her problem was that she couldnt trust HS when HS said he was better than JW. She brought up past events. She compared him with JW who is sure trustworthy and consistent.

But, is HS really untrustworthy? Otherwise, he's proved that he is the most honest, even in the most difficult situations which he often appears blunt. He is reliable that he would protect her like crazy. Definitely he is very a trustworthy man for NR, that she can be herself most in front of him. Because she trusts him, she was willing to try the relationship with JW who was a stranger, took the heli, and many more.

But why she said she didnt trust him? May be because he has scored very low compared with JW. He has none of the attitudes she is expecting during house sharing. On top, I guess, it's related with the sleeping thing which HS is complaining her all the time.

In her rage, she talked about past: recalled his shitty manners to her, accused her an easy woman, sleep over as game over. I dont think now she has really big problems with his bad manners since they have been very close and she is alone also bad tempered. However, notions of easy woman and game over could be more relatable with sleeping refusal. Unlike Saya, NR's determination to maintain the friendship is still the most obvious reason for me. Isnt it the main reason for breakup?

With NR's 'I don't trust you', echoing in HSs' brain, had brought HS to think further, like what have gone wrong, asking the computer to review their compatibility. The poor result, at least telling him he has things to improve. Probably, the first one he should do is by ending the house sharing game.

Well, waiting for your feedback..

I see it as Na Ri proding to get certain reaction from HS, some sort of a tangible 'proof' of HS's trustworthiness, be it with some sort of action or in words. She does trust him, she just wanted to feel justified in her feeling or trust in HS, if that makes sense. And that right there, was her fear and insecurity speaking IMO. It kinda sounds irrational, I know, but women in love can do some pretty irrational things, just like women scorned lol...

HS, being a guy, interpreted it differently of course, he took what Na Ri said at face value, literally, just as you described it. The whole men are from Mars and women are from Venus thing, I guess.

With Nari being so wishy washy, I think it's all been lay out there for our viewers. I think a lot of us have caught up between the two boys and how they act and feel that we forgot how Nari truly feel. It's clear in this episode where her heart lies but the real problem here have been stated in previous episode, she states in ep 16 "it's always easier to receive love than giving it", and Soo young in ep 17 said HS is someone that "only know how to receive love and not giving it". That to me pretty sum up NR dilemma. Given how HS behave in this episode and comparing it to JW, how could NR not hesitate? What a girl value most in a relationship is the feeling of "secure", but HS is anything but that. He is like the weather that changes every second, that's why NR claim "Sometimes I like you but sometimes I'm not!". She don't have a choice in who her heart chose to love, but she have the choice to choose a love that is worthy of her.

It struck me while watching 17-18, that sometimes NR and HS act very much like a married couple. Particularly that first 'bed' scene in 17 where HS was telling NR to be careful. I don't know why but that particular scene resembles one where a husband tells his wife to be careful about the dangerous guy at work. Maybe because she was all wrapped up in his arms on the bed. Anyway, that was a huge plus point for HS.

Poor BJY. Although it appears to be a 'win' for her, Ppal Gang seemed so reluctant. I feel like PG wants to get to know her real mother more. I particularly like PG these two episodes and feel sorry that she is such a filial daughter to her father. Why can't they all live together the way they have been?

Also, poor JW. His face when NR says she's not jealous...ugh.

Lastly, poor HS. I find it particularly tragic that he wanted to introduce his gf to his mother only to witness her meeting with his love rival's mother. I don't blame him at all for breaking up with her.

I really wish to end by writing 'poor NR'... but I find I can't really sympathise with her. I don't hate her, but I don't feel sorry for her.
