Jealousy Incarnate: Episode 12

We tap a vein of quiet melancholy this hour as Hwa-shin’s regret sets in, deep and wearying. Although I fully believe he deserves it, I can’t say it doesn’t squeeze the heart a bit, as he practically drowns in the whirlpool of his self-made misery. It’s especially terrible because not only does he lose out on love, but he also risks losing his friend. And he hasn’t got so many of those that he can afford to be careless. But if adversity shows people what they’re made of, what does mud do?

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Dragging Hwa-shin on his back across the mudflat towards Na-ri, Jung-won asks if they’re even friends now, while Hwa-shin yells back that of course they are. Na-ri remains blissfully occupied digging up little octopuses, and doesn’t recognize them for a moment.

Jung-won demands an answer once and for all about who she likes: him or Hwa-shin? By accident, they knock over her bucket and her day’s catch goes flying, but Jung-won remains intent on his question. Na-ri howls over her loss—she had been catching them for Chi-yeol—and yells that she dislikes them both. She refuses to leave, but each man grabs an arm and they haul her unceremoniously away.

Back on land, Na-ri wonders what the two of them are doing there, and Jung-won points out she invited him because she wanted to have her way with him. Haha. While they make plans to wash off, Hwa-shin leaves by himself, ignoring Na-ri as she calls him back. She wonders if he came to cover Sung-sook’s absence, and surprise flashes across Jung-won’s face.

Na-ri and Jung-won find an outdoor shower. Holding the nozzle like a gun, Jung-won tells her to put her hands up, and she laughs as he hoses her down. “Look only at me, okay?” he says to her with a grin. But she stops laughing when Jung-won won’t stop spraying her. She takes the hose and turns it on him, which has her laughing again.

Meanwhile, Hwa-shin makes his solitary way away, and keeps looking back over his shoulder, as if he can hear the echoes of their laughter. Shuddering, he reaches down his collar…and comes out with a little octopus. Half-crying, he wails, “Please, let go of me!” and threatens to eat it whole if it keeps carrying on like this. Oh my lols.

Na-ri discovers a bar of soap and uses it to wash Jung-won’s hair, in an intimate yet sisterly moment. Or like washing your dog. In turn, he washes the mud from her face, and tries to get her to blow her nose out in his hand, but she sniffs it up instead, embarrassed.

She agrees when he suggests they go eat, and try as he might, he can’t get her to say “yes” casually more than once without her reverting to jondae.

As they leave the kids’ school, Ja-young asks Sung-sook how long they’ll continue going around like twins, but she’s taken aback by Sung-sook’s avowal to date Chef and live as a family with him and Pal-gang. Ja-young is convinced that Chef likes her, while Sung-sook points out that he winked at her.

Sung-sook is game to see who can win him, and Ja-young accedes. “Okay. Let’s go at it,” she says. Gosh, you two. Just kiss and make friends! They smile daggers at each other, and Sung-sook gives her a deliberate jostle as they part ways.

Elsewhere, Chef tells Pal-gang that she can’t keep stringing the two women along, and asks her which one she wants as her mom. Dae-goo picks while Chi-yeol prefers Ja-young, and Chef says, “I wish both of them were my wives.” Haha, what?

All three teens look at him in surprise. He explains that he was watching them to see who would be better for Pal-gang, and at first, he found them weird. But as he saw them every day, he found himself interested in both of them as women. “Other women aren’t able to live with me!” he tells them, but doesn’t elaborate any further, despite them asking.

In his lodgings, a cleaned-up Hwa-shin lies feverish in bed, clutching his chest where he had surgery. Na-ri returns and notes his muddied clothes left outside. She opens his door to check on him, but he turns over, away from her. She lingers for a bit before leaving him. Oh, Hwa-shin has the little octopus in a jar of water!

Too much time passes and Na-ri goes to check on Hwa-shin again, this time going inside properly. She finds him burning up, his chest especially hot. She wrestles him up and tells him he has to go to hospital, but he bats her away. “I’ll take care of myself,” he tells her, “so don’t concern yourself and get lost.”

Exasperated, Na-ri says that if he refuses to go with her, she’ll tell the staff to take him, and expose his secret. She points out that he won’t make the anchor position like this either. Hwa-shin falls back on his pillow, dipping in and out of wakefulness, but her cry of concern brings him back for a moment, and his eyes fix on her worried face.

He finally accepts Na-ri’s help and gets himself into the car. Just as they turn the corner, Jung-won arrives.

At the hospital, the doctor discovers the markings on Hwa-shin’s chest and finds out that he’s a breast cancer patient. She thinks he might have seroma, which she explains is a build-up of fluid in the place where his tumor was removed, most likely from post-surgery overexertion. She notes it usually occurs in women with larger breasts, and leaves to run some tests.

Mindful of their open surroundings, Na-ri draws the curtains around Hwa-shin and tries to get him to drink. He pushes her away, and repeatedly kicks off the blanket she covers him with. “Everything is because of you,” he says, and begs her to leave him alone.

His flailing ejects her from the cubicle, but she sets her jaw and goes back in. She draws the blanket over him again, and misunderstanding his distress, glomps him like a starfish. “It’s scary, isn’t it?” she says, thinking he’s upset about possibly having something in common with big-breasted women. The greater his anguish, the tighter she holds him.

“Please,” he entreats, “Don’t engulf me like…like an octopus. Get off me, I beg you!” But she doesn’t. Instead, she speaks soothingly to him, and says her mom got sensitive the sicker she got, too. “Don’t hurt by yourself,” she tells him.

Hwa-shin’s agitation quiets, and after a long moment, he asks, “Why are you being good to me?” “Because you’re sick, and on top of that, you’re all alone…I feel sorry for you,” Na-ri replies.

“You’re sorry for me?” he asks. “Because I’m pitiful, you’re good to me,” he says to himself, face closing. He sends Na-ri on an errand back to their lodgings, and once she’s gone, gets ready to leave.

Back at the lodgings, Jung-won is unable to reach Na-ri on her phone, which she accidentally left in the car. He asks her whereabouts from a couple of staffers, and learns that she went off somewhere with Hwa-shin. He paces restlessly, waiting for her.

He finally calls Hwa-shin to find out where Na-ri is, but Hwa-shin tells him he’s headed back to Seoul. “Together?” asks Jung-won in dismay. Right then, Na-ri’s car pulls up, and he yells at her for not answering her phone. But almost immediately, he apologizes for his outburst.

His call with Hwa-shin is still active, and on the other end, Hwa-shin hears Na-ri explaining that she dropped by the local hospital because she felt unwell. By the time she returns there, though, Hwa-shin is gone.

Na-ri sees Jung-won off with a smile that night, but her expression turns pensive once he’s gone. Meanwhile, Hwa-shin drives himself back to Seoul, alone and with a heavy heart.

The next day, Hwa-shin checks in with Dr. Geum who tells him that luckily it’s not seroma. She wonders why Na-ri’s not there. “I’m going to let go of that woman and forget her,” he replies, and adds that he hates being pitied. Bwahaha, Nurse Oh yawns at his melodramatics.

That night, Hwa-shin stops off at Na-ri’s stepmom’s convenience store where little Beom pushes his latest “I love Pyo Na-ri” drawing towards him. Hwa-shin gives the kid the side-eye and says he’s not buying tonight.

From her rooftop, Na-ri calls out to Hwa-shin, wondering where he could be when he doesn’t answer his phone and hasn’t even turned up to work. But he’s inside after all, staring at one of Beom’s drawings. He turns out the lights.

Another morning, Na-ri takes him pancakes through the pouring rain. He doesn’t answer her from inside, so she leaves them at his door. In the night, she throws pebbles at his window while calling his phone. It rings where he forgot it outside, but he remains within, steadfastly ignoring her.

At work, PD Oh gives Hwa-shin the audition schedule for the different slots. Hwa-shin says he’s only going for the 9 o’clock main anchor. He objects to the suggestion that he could take the seat beside Sung-sook if she wins it instead, and likens her to a dried persimmon. Sung-sook seems more amused than anything else.

Hwa-shin stomps out, vowing to find a partner who matches him. Going to Hye-won in the announcers’ department, he declares, “You and me. Let’s do it,” and leads her out.

Hwa-shin’s mom arrives at his new place with a ton of food. So you don’t hate your son! She grumbles angrily about his slovenliness, and starts picking things up. In his rubbish, she finds a prescription for anti-breast cancer medicines with her son’s name on it. In confusion, she wonders why he would take such a thing.

Hwa-shin clarifies to Hye-won that they’re to be audition partners, and she replies that he can do it like that, but she’ll do it like it’s dating. She smiles to herself at his brusque treatment.

Picking an empty studio, Hwa-shin starts coaching her, and suddenly notices that Na-ri’s also there. She smiles to see him, but he just tells her to get out. He tells Hye-won about matching feeling and expression to the news they’re reporting, and gripes at her for her pretty smiles.

“But I am pretty,” she says, unapologetic. Na-ri listens to them surreptitiously, and takes notes. She grins sheepishly when Hwa-shin catches sight of her, and says that she wants to learn. But he tells her that her sixty seconds of airtime are not even comparable to an anchor’s sixty minutes, and shouts at her to get out. Ass.

He turns back to Hye-won, and advises her not to pay any attention to the weather, since it’s not important: They close the news. Listening, Na-ri lingers a long moment at the door, before finally turning away.

Dong-gi barrels into PD Oh’s office with news of an unexpected applicant for the morning news announcer slot. Sung-sook and Ja-young are also there, and they watch a reel from Joo-hee, who calls on her past as Miss Korea to recommend her as an anchor.

She drivels on about intelligence and dignity (wouldn’t it be nice if you had some) and is all-round dull, but PD Oh reckons all the male judges will pick her, because booty over brains. But there’s one more, Dong-gi says, and they all wear identical expressions of shock to discover Na-ri also applied.

In the bathrooms, Joo-hee snipes at Na-ri for being sneaky and figures that they’re rivals now. But Na-ri puts an encouraging arm around the younger woman and says, “Let’s do well.” Senior weathercaster, KAN MI-YOUNG (about time we named her), shoulders in and asks pointedly if either of them have tendered their resignations. She accuses them of making fools of the rest of the weathercasters.

Hwa-shin comes to Dong-gi seeking Hye-won’s audition tapes, and Dong-gi tells him about Na-ri’s announcer application. He runs the reel, filmed on Na-ri’s own rooftop. Frank and unassuming, she talks about how she used to envy the announcers, but realized she had so much pride in her current position as a weathercaster that she couldn’t bring herself to resign.

She says she took joy in making the weather enjoyable and clear for every viewer. She closes by asking the judges to give a sixty-seconder like her a chance at sixty minutes, promising to make her future work just as accessible.

Na-ri enters the weathercasters’ lounge where her colleagues are gathered. Apologizing, she asks them not to hate her too much, and explains that this is her last shot at it. She tells them that only by failing one last time will she be able to give up the dream.

“Hey,” Mi-young pipes up, “Since you’ve done this already, you absolutely mustn’t fail.” Looking Na-ri and Joo-hee in the eye, she says, “Show them clearly that we lack opportunity, not skill, okay?” Moved, Na-ri nods.

Hwa-shin finds himself having to get an elevator alone with Na-ri. As soon as the doors close, she brings him to task over what he said about ignoring the weather, and points out that no matter what else happens in the world, everyone’s interested in the weather. She mutters that if he becomes anchor, no one will watch him—except maybe his friend Jung-won, but she’ll make sure to change the channel if she’s there. Hahaha.

Hwa-shin only says that it’s Jung-won’s birthday tomorrow, and gets off.

Jung-won wants to see Hwa-shin but can’t bring himself to send a message. Even Secretary Cha wonders at Hwa-shin’s recent absence: “Did you become enemies? Over a woman?” Lol.

Na-ri bolts into Hwa-shin’s car to cadge a lift home, but her real purpose turns out to be to grill him on what to do for Jung-won for his birthday. She settles on cooking him a birthday dinner and Hwa-shin easily answers a stream of questions about Jung-won’s preferences.

She feels guilty when she learns he doesn’t like jjajangmyun, since he had it with her all the time. Hwa-shin reassures her that anything he ate with her would have been delicious. With the way he’s looking at her right now, he could be talking about himself as much as Jung-won. “It would be really nice to have your food,” he says, with an almost-smile.

She continues to take notes as they drive. “There’s not one thing you don’t know about your friend!” she enthuses, and can’t stop thanking him. She gets him to let her off for some shopping, but he turns down her invitation to join them, saying that he’d only be a third wheel.

She asks him conspiratorially if he’s dating Hye-won, and is surprised and pleased when he says he is. But he’s done answering questions and orders her off. Laughing, she complies.

At Rak Pasta, Ja-young cooks up a meal for Chef. She’s excited by his approval, and asks if he doesn’t want to always eat together. He agrees. Later, Sung-sook goes to him in a form-fitting dress, bottle of wine in hand. They flirt and she asks why he doesn’t ask to date her. “Is it okay if I do?” he asks.

Madam Kim demands Jung-won’s whereabouts from Secretary Cha, who has no intel despite the cheek-pinching he suffers. She orders him to warn both Jung-won and Na-ri that she’ll be on the judging panel for the anchor auditions.

Hwa-shin arrives home to find Jung-won waiting at his door. Awkward, he tells him Na-ri will be back soon, but Jung-won says he came to see him. Hwa-shin agrees to go for a drink, and doesn’t realize that he’s left his front door unlocked.

In front of Stepmom’s store, they empty bottle after bottle of soju and even Stepmom tells them it’s too much. Jung-won scolds his friend for not even calling, and Hwa-shin points out that Jung-won should have called first, since he was the victor. Jung-won swears loudly that he was about to, so many times.

Jung-won scoots his chair up to Hwa-shin’s. Arm around his friend, he plants a big kiss on his cheek, and Hwa-shin laughs at the resurgence of his drinking habit. Jung-won teases Hwa-shin for his habit of asking everyone to date him, and kissing anyone.

The boys perk up at when they see Sung-sook. Hwa-shin gives her a drunken peck on the cheek and promises one from Jung-won if she buys them snacks. But before Sung-sook gets her kiss, their attention is snagged by Ja-young, whom they sandwich between them with noisy kisses.

Annoyed, Sung-sook leaves. Before Ja-young follows, she sweetly tells Jung-won that he should find better friends—a comment both boys take exception to.

The boys sing along to the radio (Kim Hyun-shik’s My Love By My Side, whose words play on Na-ri’s name), and Hwa-shin calls out that an ugly girl is coming when he sees Na-ri approach. Objecting, Jung-won counters, “The prettiest girl in the neighborhood is coming!”

Na-ri is shocked at how much they’ve drunk, and Jung-won insists that Hwa-shin can outdrink him, while Hwa-shin insists Jung-won drank it all. Frustrated, she asks how Jung-won can know Hwa-shin so little when Hwa-shin knows him so well.

Jung-won complains that she’s not paying attention to him, but Hwa-shin points out all Na-ri’s shopping, which she did to make him a surprise birthday dinner. Growing morose, he makes to go, but Jung-won grabs onto his wrist to stop him.

To Na-ri’s embarrassment, the boys follow behind her, arm in arm, chanting like hooligans: “Milky complexion, Pyo Na-ri! Swallowed air and pooped out clouds, Pyo Na-ri! Weather fairy, Pyo Na-ri!” She pleads with them to stop and they quiet down. But exchanging looks of perfect understanding, they start over again, louder than ever.

She hurriedly tries to tidy her rooftop, and sends them inside out of her way. Across on Hwa-shin’s roof, she notices little Beom at his door, sketchpad in hand. She ends up going over there to collect him, but Beom escapes into Hwa-shin’s house.

Fretting, she follows him inside…and stops short at the sight of Hwa-shin’s bedroom wall, which is covered with Beom’s drawings, each one bearing the same legend: “I love you, Pyo Na-ri.” Her gaze fastens on one picture in particular, where the legend is in Hwa-shin’s hand.

On the other roof, the boys pick up their duet again. In a flashback, Hwa-shin smiles over his latest acquisition. But noticing there’s no writing on it, he picks up a pen and writes it himself: “I love you, Pyo Na-ri.”

COMMENTS

Now there’s a game-changer! Exciting! I’m curious to know if what Hye-won said is true: Does he really only have to crook his finger for Na-ri to go to him? I don’t think Na-ri’s flakey, but something about the lost cup-ramyun interpretation rings true. We’re poised at a really interesting place and I can make a thousand guesses for which way it will go, but somehow, I feel sure that Na-ri will surprise me. She always has, and I love that about her. It’s not that she’s inconsistent (she’s not), but she has an unexpected way of solving her problems. It’s like you give her a choice of A and B, and she goes off and invents a third, more complex option that resists being trapped by convention and arbitrary limitations. And that makes her an intelligent heroine, worthy of respect. Although her naivety concerning Hwa-shin’s feelings might have been overplayed a bit, I also think the show has been consistent in ascribing a level of romantic innocence to her, which allows her to be perceptive about people in specific ways while blind to them in others.

I finally realized that I’m only really rooting for Na-ri right now, and that’s been my ship all along. As romantic as bad boys are, treating ’em mean is not a philosophy that belongs in any healthy relationship. The entire reason why I liked Jung-won with Na-ri was because I wanted her to be with a man who consistently treated her well. How alluring is that? I’m waiting for Hwa-shin to reach that point where his mouth isn’t constantly at odds with his heart, and while I’m rooting for him to grow, I don’t see him as ready for a relationship yet. I’ll root for him wholeheartedly when he gets there.

But I came close to writing off both men when they started arguing over Na-ri like a piece of meat. I guess it’s past time for Jung-won to show his imperfections, and in this drama more than most, bursts of jealousy are just par for the course. You guys have been noting his cracks for weeks, but only this week did we see his anger and insecurity turned on Na-ri. But thanks to his self-disapprobation and immediate apologies, I think he earned himself his second chances. It feels like his maturity is warring with his inner 12-year-old, and you know, I can sympathize with that. Realistically, there’s always a measure of distance between your principles and how you practise them, and Jung-won shows that particularly well, especially in how his struggle against himself is entrenched in his own self-awareness.

I understand his frustration about not being able to cross certain obstacles with Na-ri, like getting her to lower her speech, but intimacy takes time and he can’t make it happen by sheer force of will. I reckon he’s only slightly more experienced than her in the romance department, given how he treats Na-ri much like he treats Hwa-shin, except with kisses. Oh wait, even that, ha! The show’s made a clear contrast all along between Na-ri’s comfort with Hwa-shin, and her formality with Jung-won. I don’t think that dynamic is damning in real-life terms, but in the context of the drama, I can see the ease that exists between Na-ri and Hwa-shin turning to trust, and paving the way for stronger feelings. I feel like their love would be a quiet, everyday kind, built on little things, which we’ve seen tantalizing glimmers of from time to time. Watching that grow is so exciting.

It’s to Jealousy’s credit that Hwa-shin and Jung-won’s relationship is as central to this show as any romance. That mudfight is everything, and provides a climax for the first real challenge to their friendship. They have to work out their problem—which is about Na-ri, but it’s also not about her at all—without actually involving her, and their reunion somehow achieves that. Although I’m sure it’s far from over, I like the definite statement that none of this means their friendship is broken. But I think Hwa-shin needs to pick which side he’s batting for, himself or his friend. He is seriously the most knuckle-headed idiot, sending her to Jung-won and pining for her and pushing her away and vowing to win her…pick, Hwa-shin! Either give her up or fight for her!

Lastly, how enjoyable is Sung-sook and Ja-young’s evolution from hateful to oddly loveable? I want to play prophet and pick one of them for Chef, but I agree with his thinking: Marry ’em both! Sung-sook has almost mellowed, and these upcoming auditions get more exciting by the day. This episode really captured the impossible position of Na-ri and the weathercasters: blamed if they dare to have ambition, but held in general contempt if they don’t. And yet, they take pride in doing their job well, if only for sixty seconds on screen. It basically sucks to be them, but it’s so great that Mi-young, as the longest-serving weathercaster, shores Na-ri up instead of tearing her down. Unlike maknae Joo-hee, she knows that the only way they’ll hold their own among wolves is by banding together. Their loyalty might spring from survival instinct rather than friendship, but it’s no less strong. That’s family right there.

Shenanigans is probably 80% of why I'm hooked to this show. Writer really knows how to boobytrap moments of drama or despair with unexpected bursts of intense humor. Like I was feeling pretty sorry for Hwa Shin, who was literally dragged through the mud begging for mercy, and was now waddling alone along the road like some water fowl injured by an oil spill. Except then the OCTOPUS SOLILOQUY happened and I completely lost it.

At this point I'm having a hard time to choose between 2 guys. There's something sweet about HS kept his feelings from Pyo Na Ri, but secretly collect Bum's drawing.

So guilty for enjoying HS's suffering with jealousy and incapability to express his feelings.

I'm in love with this drama. Can't seem to get enough.

I was really confused with the emphasis of the hidden cup ramyun..but now it makes sense. I had a feeling that she wasn't completely over him...just that she had accepted that he has absolutely no feelings for her as he has always been an ass to her..and she was done with acting on it.. but I don't think that absolves all her feelings. Anyway it'll be interesting to see how she responds to this unexpected news..and if those feelings are there and if she will choose to act on it or not. I love Nari and like Saya said she has an unexpected way of solving problems, so I trust her. :)

The part where Na Ri is hugging Hwa Shin on the hospital bed made me a little uncomfortable.

She has a boyfriend who happens to be the best friend of this man she's hugging and comforting which she's had a crush on for 3 years AND they're not super duper close….only as of what - maybe 1 month - they've reconnected again as work colleagues? So how is it "okay" for her to think to do that!?

No wonder poor Hwa Shin is hella confused…Na Ri is giving off such confusing signals! Any man would be attracted to a woman who is comforting him, taking care of him and paying him so much attention in his time of need (especially knowing she's had prior feelings for him). Not to mention, he's estranged from his mother. If he wasn't attracted to that, I would be more confused.

I think Na Ri still likes Hwa Shin - and that has eventually developed into love for her when she met him again. She knows his diagnosis allows her to be close to him for brief periods of time, like when he goes for radiation.

I'm starting to pity Jung Won actually.

If it's a behavior she would do with Chi Yeol, then I don't think it's out of line for her to do it with HS when it comes to his cancer. In her mind I see them as having shortcutted to family when it comes to his cancer, because she knows he has no one else. I think we tend to comfort people in ways we like to be comforted and this I still probably how she cared for her mother as well. I don't think she's giving off such confusing signals as she's accepted that they have zero romantic potential and she can be caring to HS even partly BECAUSE she is his best friends girlfriend. HS is in this situation because he can't deal with feelings and hasn't told the truth.

I see what you are saying and to a certain degree, I agree that her motherly instinct is what seems to be kicking in since she's taken care of Chi Yeol after their mother died however I think the writer isn't doing that good of a job of showing us that "overprotective and super caring" side of her.

Most of her scenes with Chi Yeol is either her leaving the house for work, or telling him she's going to sleep at the station. She missed the parent-teacher conference as well. We don't see very many scenes of her even talking to him on the phone, asking his whereabouts or how school is going.

He's a senior in high school which means 19/20 yrs. He's quite mature and can take care of himself. He's not toiling away, neglected at some part time job.

He's very protective of his sister and doesn't want to burden her just like she didn't want to burden him by telling him about her op or losing her job etc. She already knows he wants to be a doctor.

This is probably the healthiest relationship in this drama.

I agree with your posts. I think NR would want to be careful about touching HS because 1) it is more than what would be expected of an acquaintance of the opposite sex (I am not really sure that I would call them friends), 2) she used to have a crush on HS (so he might interpret her behavior differently), 3) she is dating someone (who may not see her actions as innocent -- and rightfully so), and, 4) HS has asked her to give him space.

I had kind of hoped that NR interacting with someone who wants to be in her presence (JW) would make her less tolerant and less available to those who blow hot and cold with her (HS).

Well, i would have agreed on her giving 'confusing signals' if he is not sick. And I would like to think that since the time they spent at the hospital their relationship has become something akin to friendship. Isn't it okay to care for someone you view as a friend? And hasn't it been established by both of them they Nari doesn't have feelings for him anymore. I mean at least not consciously. And Nari thinks Hwashin doesn't have any feelings for her. So as far as Nari thinks, she's not doing anything wrong that could be misinterpreted.

I also thought it was weird of her to hug him like that. I'm still waiting to be convinced that she cares about HS beyond his cancer diagnosis.

But lets see on the next episodes now that she knows he likes her too. She has to evaluate how she really feels.

I feel sorry for JW, and I really don't think he's being immature and mean. It's so obvious that HS and NaRi are close, and he can't even get his own girlfriend to drop the formalities. It can get really frustrating. Poor guy. Sometimes I think since the end game is he loses her, .. He's Jealousy Incarnate and not HS. (Even though it's really HS' name)

In Na Ri's point of view, that hug was just meant to reassure Hwa Shin that he's not alone in his battle with breast cancer. She pointed out several episodes ago that she's finally "over" her three year crush with Hwa Shin and the guy was made very well aware of it. So I don't think she was crossing the line when she tugged-hugged Hwa Shin back in the hospital. It was pure concern for the guy and she knows how stubborn Hwa Shin is when it comes to well, everything!

Hwa Shin being confused with the way Na Ri treats him is his own doing. His judgement is clouded because of his feelings for her, so assuming things and jumping to conclusions is pretty human for him so I really can't help but sympathize with him. But for him to blame her is an entirely different conversation. He needs to come to terms with reality as well as tell Na Ri what the acceptable boundaries are so no lines are crossed and everyone can go on with their lives. BUT..... This is kdrama, so the confusion remains, the jealousy heightens, the bitterness lingers, the cheesiness overflows, the angst rebounds and love will continue to prevail.

Actually, I thought she hugged him to help keep him warm. She'd asked if he was cold and was trying hard to keep the covers on him. While hugging him she also asked him if he wasn't warm now. It didn't seem to be spurred by romance or affection per se.

Indigo, I agree with you. She said her mom got cranky when she was sick so it was no surprise that he was freezing but throwing off the blanket and just being contrary about everything so she treated him like a little kid and took care of him, knowing how vulnerable she thought he was.

I thought the hug was strange too. I'm trying to like Na Ri but it really bothers me how she has no sense of boundaries. When someone tells you to leave them alone, you should respect their wishes. I find it uncomfortable that she's always clinging to Hwa Shin.

But with that said, I do enjoy Hwa Shin turning into a puddle of goo every time that "sticky squid" won't let go.

>> The show’s made a clear contrast all along between Na-ri’s comfort with Hwa-shin, and her formality with Jung-won. I don’t think that dynamic is damning in real-life terms, but in the context of the drama, I can see the ease that exists between Na-ri and Hwa-shin turning to trust, and paving the way for stronger feelings <<

Saya, thanks for pointing this out. It makes me realize I need help seeing why/how NaRi became so comfortable with HS. We saw that she still had the formal stiffness with him at the (now famous) Quizno's. Wasn't she still pretty formal when she got to Bangkok? When did that change (what am I forgetting?), and has she changed from formal speech as well?

I think that change came when she was feeling him up because she thought he might have breast cancer. Her mother and grandmother had it so it's something she is familiar with and knows the pain and suffering that it causes to the patient and the ppl around them. He continually denies any help, but she knows he will need it as his life is on the line. He needs someone to care about his life and she is willing to be that person as she knows no one else will because he is a stubborn little ass. At least that is my take on why she is able to be so familiar with him.

I wonder, though, if the drama expects us to overvalue their informality with one another? After all, it is pretty much based in NR caring for HS. He doesn't even know her career aspirations or about the financial burden of her brother's education. Does he know about her old job? I think their dynamic is still too one-sided.

Yunno, polyandry and polygamy totally should be a thing...at least in dramaland. (Not possible in real life since we mortals have a hard time finding even one person let alone having a string of suitors)
That would solve everybody's problems in one stroke and no sweet second lead will ever have to settle for the mean person just for the sake of closure. Imagine alll the possibilities!

I'm just a teeny bit peeved and indignant on Hwa-shin's behalf when Na-ri was going all about him putting her abilities down in the elevator. I get why she's annoyed that he's doubting her abilities, but am I the only one who thinks that by going on about how the weather forecast doesn't matter, he kind of helped her in a backhanded way? Like... he somehow, unwittingly even, fired up her competitive spirit and she ended up making an even better audition clip than she'd been trying to do all this while?

Also, Hye-won is pretty cool and I'm happy for Seo Ji-hye.

Btw, I love how cool Ja-young and Sung-sook were when those two young handsome men kiss them like that.

The opening of the episode confirmed exactly to me why I'm not feeling "love" between Jung-won and Na-ri. You can't buy love – Jung-won may have the money to buy the best octopuses in the world, but it's not the same as the ones you caught yourself in the mud through hard work and suffering. If he wants a real relationship with a girl, he needs to learn that.

He can – in fact I'm a little surprised he doesn't seem to understand this at all at this point, because despite his lack-of-love from his own family, he has had a pretty real (non-money based) friendship with Hwa-shim for many years that should have taught him that most meaningful connections between people aren't build with money.

He's outburst after Na-ri came back from the hospital however concerned me. Sorry, that was red flag behaviour and coupled with whenever he says "From now on just do what I say", I'd be running in real life. I know he's a good guy, but... can't overlook this.

How good is Jo Jung-seok? Man, every little detail he puts in his Hwa-shin character just makes it so endearing. After he peeled off the clingy octopus you could see him walk away still shuddering as if he could still feel the remnant of the slimy octopus on his neck. This is why I enjoy watching actors with a musical/theatre background, they know how to use their whole body to act.

I really want HS and JW's friendship to survive this. I mean, they may be fighting but they're still drawn to each other like a true OTP. With the new development of NR finding out HS's feelings, it sure will further complicate the triangle. I'm hoping HS is serious when he says he will try to move on from NR. HW is one cool cucumber and she can keep him company. They've got a cute chemistry together.

The actress Park Ji-young is doing my head in, being the top candidate for the worst dramaland mum ever on Mon-Tue and then a sweet, sincere lady with so much love to give she starts "adopting" the neighbourhood kid on Wed-Thu. It's a testament to her good acting and interpretation of the characters as well, so she deserves a compliment.

When was I not Hye-won during any drama I've watched.

I liked the over all theme in last two episodes "support". Even with moms warring over their daughters affections Ja-young and Sung-sook put aside their dislike of one another to support each other when Red, Grandma, or even Hwa Shin appear and show a united front. Ja-young even supports Sung-sook during the teacher/parent conference the notion that Red only has one mother which stops while supporting Sung-sook in that moment she also push aside all her pain so that Red isn't embarrassed by her non-nuclear family and also supporting a parentless child, Chi-yeol. I think this is the main reason why Dad wanted Red to go with Ja-young because she could be selfless when she needs to beyond just being single minded in her goals.

Another is Hwa-shin and Jung-won friendship. (Also, they could easily be seen as a romance relationship) Even warring over a Na-ri these to still find the time in-between physical, emotional and mental punches at each other to confirm that they're still friends and love one another. That's f**king friendship right there.

Lastly, Na-ri, who while supporting everyone around her (the good and the bad). She's supporting herself and still going after her dreams and pushing her brother towards his, her boyfriend, supporting stubborn Hwa Shin, and her fellow weathergirls.

Hwa Shin keeps behaving like an ass. What's with the public belittlement of Na Ri and her job? And don't defend saying it's his way of motivating her for the auditions. Either man up and be honest about your feelings or suck it up and be civil to her.

And Na Ri keeps over going the lines with Hwa Shin while having a boyfriend. Seriously that hospital bed hug is a big no go. Way too much investment and skinship for a guy who has done nothing but degraded and insulted her. They've been awkward for 3 years and only 1 months in a hospital room together why she believes she can openly touch him in such an intimate way. At the same time she's even shy to have skinship with her actual boyfriend.

Jung Won keeps getting more uncomfortable as a boyfriend. The way he lashed out at Na Ri and demanded she should only do as he says is obsessive and controlling. And that was only supposed to be the little cracks on the surface no not to imagine how more unconfortable he can get.

Hye Won amused stance on that whole love triangle is actually fun to watch. Girl doesn't give a fuck about anything but her own feelings at all. Yeah Hwa Shin is practicing with her for the auditions but it's a date for her. And she can't help if she's naturally pretty.

Friendship once broken can never be mended between jw and hs the most when you see each other you ask formal basic questions but not taking precious time to spend with your best friend anymore. Sickness will not be an excuse to mend a broken heart for jw towards hs.

After seeing the nursery art, nari should be more responsible and tell jw about her feeling towards hs. Before hurting jw more , but it too late now !

Now she even clean his muddy shoes ! Oh jo won your heart will be like that muddy shoe left unattended. Nari is a weather caster she knows when is high tide or low tide ? Hs - you are giving excuses to see her.

Oh jong won you should take the hint from nari about hs knowing all about him and jw doesn't know anything about hs , that is an unfair remark nari ! When BOTH of you are keeping secrets from jw about hs health.

I think the next person who will see the drawing will be JW when he enter hs room looking for him. Well he wants his best friend to know outwardly his confession about nari so will see the broken man JW. - oh I Heart you JW !.

My one hope for this show was that they wouldn't have Na-ri switch teams just because she finds out that Hwa-shin likes her. I want them to give us a really good reason for them to get together. Because, up to this point she and Jung-won genuinely like each other a lot and have a pretty good relationship despite some minor annoyances which could be worked out if she just opened her mouth and said "I don't like that..." every once in a while. It's not like other shows where the the lead gets with the wrong person just as a coping mechanism to forget their broken heart. He's the one she wanted all along. And he's not such a perfect Prince Charming like she thought, but know one is. So, unless he's the one to break it off with her and Hwa-shin swoops in to pick up the pieces, I don't buy her all of a sudden deciding the Hwa-shin is the one she loves just because he made a (slightly creepy) mural out of her little brother's drawings. I actually think the show is foreshadowing Jung-won bowing out of the "contest" so I may be worried about nothing. I hope so.

I know dramas aren't real life, but I just can't imagine a situation where it would be alright to start a relationship and then, three weeks later change your mind because the person you liked a year ago (who you've shown only platonic interest in since) finally likes you back.

That said, I'm still Team Jung-won. He's an adorable puppy and I think he can outgrow that pettiness. His secretary said he's never even really been interested in women much before so I think this is his real relationship and he has room to grow. It' promising that he generally knows immediately and takes corrective steps when he's crossed the line.

Haw-shin and Hye-won would be so great together. Sometimes I think this show should have been hers all along. She deserves it. Why do they never write leads like her? I'd root for her all day long.

Eh, maybe if she was acted out by a better actress. Right now, she's an emotionless robot. I don't see her emote anger or joy in anything, even if it's just slight nuances, that would've rounded her out and made her more realistic to me. The way the role is interpreted is too cold on the spectrum for me. But the character itself is a good one.

HS did these things because he loves JW and wants him finding happiness with NR. Otherwise, he is just a human being who is helpless with the crush. It's very painful to feign ignorance to NR for the sake of friendship when his heart is actually longing for her.

Would JW do the same if he were in HS's shoes?

I'm not impressed by that doctor. Why does she keep insisting on NR to bring HS for checkups? Its not her burden. She should be more frank and upfront with the actual patient. The cancer just seems like a trope now for having NR stick to HS for as long as possible.

And NR really needs some time off for personal growth rather than bothering with romance. That scene where she refused to leave during their practice run was cringe inducing.

I think there is a cultural element to this – that of the patient's "guardian". In many other places, you talk to the patient, but in Korea, Japan, etc. the guardian can be told stuff while the patient is kept in the dark.

At this rate, the end game will be Na-ri & Jung-won, coz Hwa-shin will be dead by recurring cancer. What's going on with all the drinking and missing treatments, plus isn't dairy product supposed to be forbidden? Were the ice creams made of soya milk..?
I think the octopus analogy is apt for Na-ri, since she seems the type who stick to her decision, whether it's work or love. Would totally get it if she fell out of her tiring one-sided crush, but fall again for real after seeing and knowing Hwa-shin from up-close & personal instead of admiring from afar and being kept on arm's (and feet, face, etc) length.
Loving Hwa-shin as much as I love Hye-won, feels like he has his own code of honor. If anybody else badmouth him coz he is acting like an a**, he just take it on stride coz he knows he is an a**. And i think it is kind to be cruel by letting Na-ri knew (then) that he has no feeling whatsoever for her rather than drag her crush. And seeing how torn he is between his feelings and loyalty makes him more endearing. Him calling her cute with all the ice cream smeared on his face is super adorable! Am glad his mother found the receipt, it's about time somebody else knows about the cancer.
That scene with octopus tentacles appeared from Hwa-shin's collar is a bit horrorific, if it were me, the octopus would've been flung to the next city. Am glad he kept it, hope it can be a pet instead of being eaten alive somewhere...

HS might be an ass but my heart aches for him every time he gets in a funk. The shell he has built is bristling with spikes and it seems only someone deadly persistent like NR can get through. And since she did get through, HS is experiencing all sorts of uncomfortable feelings that he seems to have suppressed in the process of surviving the cut-throat environment at his work and the unfortunate situation stemming from his brother and family in his personal life.

I find it refreshing that he straightaway told his friend about his feelings for NR instead of excessive dramaland noble idiocy (although he is doing it with NR by pushing her toward JW) and then at the same time he said he wouldn't act on his feeling (he kept his word on this). It is consistent with HS's ego to behave like, yea, I like the girl BUT I won't do anything because you're my friend and I'm so great for doing this. Deep down, he does love his friend very much but then along comes this adorable woman. What is one to do? His see-sawing between his friend and woman is understandable. HS is really not having it easy especially with his health, family and career issues piled on top of it as well. I do not envy his position.

Love this show and can't wait to see how they will tie it all up. So glad that it's 20 episodes, I want to see the characters develop especially HS.

Me too. I think it shows something about the depth of their friendship. If you're good friends, you'd have these thoughts, but not say them because it would be too uncomfortable. But if you're really, really, really good friends you'd admit this truth, as unpleasant and difficult as it is. Because the honesty in the friendship matters more than "winning the prize" (in this case, having a relationship with Nari). Aas much as they are at odds right now, I believe ultimately HS and JW would choose their friendship over the girl. And precisely because they would do that, they'd also give up the girl for the other guy.

I love the way they did Pyo Na-ri’s audition. It was so sincere and heartfelt, and so in keeping with her personality. Then they followed it up with Mi-young’s unexpected encouragement to Na-ri: hooray for sister solidarity!! I'm liking the direction this is going in!

While everyone is dishing out great portrayals of their respective characters, the last few episodes has clearly made this Jo Jung-seok's show. The guy is just acing it in every single scene. I'm torn between the joy and heart-wrenching pain of watching him kick himself begrudgingly for breaking Na-ri's heart for 3 long, haughty years only to fall head first for her in the most unfortunate of circumstances.

Gyung-po is holding his own quite well here against two brilliant leads especially when he's given a limited range of emotions and lines he can throw in given the chaebol role he has to play. He's really showing that conflicted side of hating and accepting his erring bestfriend so well.

And Hyo-jin is her usual wonderful self. Much heart and groundedness in every role she does.

I know right? HS yells at NR constantly, never even apologizes. JW yells at NR once and immediately apologizes and he gets chastised while HS gets all the pity. I feel so much pity for JW for what he's going through and will be going through in the show that it's getting unbearable to continue on with the show...

ikr~~
He yell "Where are you going?, Im worried over you."
not that he yell "Where you going" only.
And he said sorry after that. Unlike HS that never said sorry at the wrong accusation
1)NR bring broadcast people to expose his secret.
2) NR show his bra wearing video to JW.

And let's not forget the part where he actually walked in front of Pyo Na Ri instead of wrist grabbing her back when she was trying to leave his clothing studio

she goes off and invents a third, more complex option that resists being trapped by convention and arbitrary limitations.

.... threesome!

Seriously at this point the guys have kissed each other more than either of them has kissed her.

The chef is CLEARLY thinking what I'm thinking. ^_^

..someday, somehow I'm writing THAT drama: an adorkable, inseparable OT3 who find themselves in a not-so-typical "triangle"! (for one, it'll truly be ~equally angled on all 3 sides, as opposed to the cliché actually lopsided "v"!) AND THEY MAKE IT WORK!! yet with enough innocence to pass for both the usual conservative audiences & fellow ace viewers xD

// Kdrama has become an epic oxymoronic addiction for this poor poly-shipping heart of mine ^-^"

Jung Won is getting really obsessive and overbearing in this episode despite Na Ri not giving him any reasons to do so. I wonder how much more angry and controlling he would get if he witnessed what the audience is seeing? Na Ri touching Hwa Shin's breats in public, running after him and hugging him tightly in a bed. Under the facade of the nice gentlemen lies a lot of insecurities and boiled anger. He's quite the scary person if provoked.

His actions are not relationship fitting. Sorry but his emotional distance gap with Na Ri that he isn't able to overcome and his growing jealousy will be the end of that relationship.

Jung won's jealousy is not a good look. When he called Nari and assumed that she's doing something with Hwa Shin, it pushed him over to the possessive-controlling type which is a turn off. I was hoping that he wouldn't, but he did. HS hit it on the nail when he told him that he's just afraid that Nari will break up with him once she knows. Jung won's even aware of it himself when he recited the line he fed to his mom. That the couple already has a problem to begin with, and that eventually they'll break up in time. Tbh, he has great chemistry with Nari but bad timing, when he met her, she's already carrying a torch for HS. I just don't think she's quite over him, and being closer to HS now than when she had a crush on him brought her even closer.

If Hwa-shin really wants Na-ri to stop sticking around and worrying about him this much, he should start taking care of himself! I mean really, he doesn't stop drinking, when in pain he doesn't go to the hospital, he neglects his weekly appointments, he's doing nothing right for his health, UGH, he's so frustrating.

If he can't take care of himself then he should just let Na-ri do it, the more he pushes her away, the more she worries and gets all obsessed with him. I don't understand why she is still doing that when he treats her like that, he's a jerk to her, he's always been a jerk to her, but it seems like she won't stop. I get that she lost two precious people to breast cancer but Hwa-shin is being a brat, just let him be.

I adore the two guys together, I love their friendship but I can't help feel sad for Jung-won. Hwa-shin knows everything about Jung-won because he tells him. I really believe that Jung-won doesn't keep any secrets from him, he tells him everything, from the littlest of things, his favorite color, his favorite food, but hwa-shin doesn't. Why wouldn't he tell his friend about his cancer, why won't he let him be by his side? What is he so afraid of? He should tell one of his people about himself and Na-ri isn't one of his people, he's not letting her be!

Can't wait to see how Na-ri will react after she discovered the drawings.

Thanks Saya for the recap.

Wow that cup of ramyon interpretation is so cool, I only saw it now!! And I was like WHY the emphasis there?
I love it whenever this show gives emphasis to subtleties!! Like in the first ep (or one of the first eps) when they had Nari and Hwashin fighting over "his chest" behind that monitor and in front of it, they were paralleled to Harry and Sally from "When Harry met Sally". I fell in love with them from the start but that bit added that extra something. I was like "Show what are u doing? Are u gonna reach for that??<3" And coming to think of it, they do have that aura of being really close to each other and not being able to avoid going there in the end coz of the depth of their feelings.
And just in general the little things have always being centered around the Hwashin/Nari pairing with those bathroom figures turning green or red whenever each one of them would/wouldn't access the other person's heart, the little "ding!" sound when they had meaningful eye-contact and in this ep the octapus metaphor with Nari being attached to him no matter what. I also lol-ed pretty hard with his "I'm gonna eat you whole", coz u know I connected it to the "I wanna to kiss her, hold her, sleep with her!!" Esp the last one lol

shame. i usually love gong hyo jin in dramas and her ability to turn even the whiniest characters into likable ones....but i truly can't stand her character on this show. in what world are ppl this naive and oblivious to everything? she's like a 10 year old kid lol. the way the writers have set her up to be a complete idiot for dramatic effect is driving me crazy (lol @ her blank, ridiculous look on the beach while two dudes fought like 10 feet away from her...yikes). and it's too bad bc i thought the feeling of the show was v charming. what a world of difference from her character in It's Ok, That's Love.

For that, I blame the camera/director, really. In some shots she was really far away in the background, in others they were indeed fighting only a few yards away from her.

I got the humor of her oblivious hunting for octopus while this petty mudfight was happening right behind her.

Sorry but Hwa Shin needs to stop being whiny and man up. He says one thing and does something else. You don't want to be close to Na Ri then stop doing things that make her run to you like openly ignoring your health for her to see.

Not wanting to hurt Jung Won and yet telling him that you're in love with his girlfriend and want to kiss/sleep with her. That confession was so selfish and only to relieve himself from stress.

Hwa Shin is a wimpering hypocrate. He wants to have things his way and is obviously trying to get close with Na Ri by using excuses and self sabotage to be with her. He's lying his teeth out when he says he's trying to keep the distance between them.

I'm kinda glad I started watching this gem so late, it was all fun and pleasure marathoning the 12 episodes.

And I absolutely agree with some of the previous comments re polygamy. I think that's the only satisfactory solution for the characters in this drama, especially so for the main OT3. And this is not all just my wishful thinking, I honestly believe its for their own good and can see it working (unless the show reveal some other side to JW's character, we're seeing hints, but nothing concrete, so...).

Queen SMS, no wonder she has no love for Wang So. She's given away all maternal love for this drama ?

Even if hs takes care of health Na ri would still come up with an excuse to be with him, except we want to end the show pre maturely... And i will prefa if my best friend selfishly tells me he is in love with my girlfriend,,, at least a solution is in the making..instead of doing things (dating my girl) behind my back..its worse..
