Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

Team Dramabeans, reporting for check-in!

We’ve cleared a few shows from the slate and welcomed new ones (with several more on the horizon), so it feels like we’re starting a new season, which feels appropriate to the back-to-school season we’re in now (at least here in the States). Are you ready to jump on the new bunch, or are you still wrapping up finales from the last round? Or, if you’re like me, maybe you’ve quietly just shoved those unwatched finales into the drawer, freed yourself from the paralyzing guilt of completism, and moved on. (Hey, there is no shame in walking away from non-compelling dramas!) –javabeans

Currently recapping: Moonlight Drawn by Clouds

Age of Youth: This was a charming, understated show that started off a little slow but soon became a highlight of the week. I still wish it were directed differently (it felt low-rent, and while I suppose low-rent worked for the low-key story, it didn’t have to look like it was strung together on no budget), but story-wise I loved the development of the characters: They all felt like thought-out, real-life people, and together they shone.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Technically this shouldn’t be on my list since it’s a show I’m recapping, but I didn’t weigh in this week since girlfriday covered the last two episodes, and boy was I jealous about that. When it premiered last week, I thought the show was cheeky and youthful, with a heavy comic bent. This week, the show matured a few degrees, got lovely and poignant, and balanced out its tone. The background soundtrack is beautiful, the acting is spot-on, and the whole package is fresh and charming.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Something very strange is up with the graphics in this drama. I was so confused when girlfriday complained that this show looked cheap and visually terrible, because I thought it was lush and visually breathtaking. But after some testing, we figured out that on television screens, this show looks like it’s shot on video using palace sets from the ’90s… and on computer screens, it’s a whole different drama, all sumptuous and breathtaking. What the hell? This is the only show that does this, and I’m scratching my head over it.

Jealousy Incarnate: This show sounds cute and funny and I totally want to watch it… but I’d barely gotten into the first episode when I had to shut it off because the swirling, whooshy camera work made me violently nauseous. Can a show be cute and vomit-inducing at the same time? I’d rather it not.

W—Two Worlds: This show has gone from excitingly complex to downright convoluted, and it makes me feel like a dummy. I want to tell the writer, You can’t keep changing the rules before you tell us what they even are! I feel like I either have to think a lot harder, or stop thinking altogether, and I haven’t decided yet which tack to take. (Path of least resistance says stop thinking and just enjoy the excitement and the pretty. It’s a persuasive argument!)

Uncontrollably Fond: You had months and months to pre-produce your show, and this is the best you could do? This drama didn’t fail because it was pre-produced, or because it cast Suzy, or because it aired at the wrong time, or because it had strong competition. This drama’s downfall is its writing, which wallows in the gratuitously miserable, delivers no payoff, and is lazy to boot. I will watch the finale, even though I’m pretty sure it’ll make me pop a blood vessel.

Currently recapping: W–Two Worlds

Bring It On, Ghost: Things were getting pretty draggy in the darker stretches of the show, but I was happy to see a return to the lighter tone in the end. I wish Taecyeon could’ve matched Kim So-hyun in the emotional department, but he matched her in cuteness, at least. It was a satisfying conclusion, and college-student Gu Dae-young was a highlight in the cameo parade.

The Good Wife: This was an engaging show with a stellar cast that never dipped in quality, but I’m not really satisfied with the ending. It just… ended… and I feel like I didn’t get the answers to the questions I had. It’s not a show that’s slated for more seasons, so why did the ending feel like a season finale, but not a series finale? It’s a flaw in the American-to-Korean adaptation framework that I think still needs to be figured out.

Age of Youth: This was a delightful little show that went off the beaten path. It was often tonally darker than I anticipated and overly obsessed with death, but the success was in the friendships among the young women, and the massive character growth we witnessed. This show always made me feel like a mama hen—proud and nervous, but mostly proud.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: I think I just don’t like this director. This show feels dated, and everything feels static to me. Except for Lee Jun-ki’s hair, which is always flowing perfectly in the wind. Seriously, I think it’s someone’s JOB to hold a fan to his mane of glory just so, and I’m not at all sorry that someone is being paid to do this. So far my engagement level with this show boils down to: Lee Jun-ki onscreen = 100 percent. Anybody else = 25 percent.

Currently recapping: Cinderella and the Four Knights

The Good Wife: It’s over. Say it ain’t so! This show was consistently stellar from start to finish. The direction, the subtle yet powerful performances, the writing…just top notch. All class. As much as I would’ve loved a few more episodes, I also know it’s sometimes best to end on a high note even if it feels like there may be more material to mine. I’m going to miss the sharply dressed, whip smart (or manipulative) characters so much, especially the main trio. And Myung-hee. And David Lee. And…fine. I’m going to miss the entire cast (except for the girl who played Hye-kyung’s daughter). I looked forward to this show the most every week, and every week I wasn’t disappointed. When will the trifecta of Jeon Do-yeon, Yoo Ji-tae, and Yoon Kye-sang ever grace our screens again? Maybe when the stars align…hopefully in my lifetime!

Age of Youth: Another good show that came to an end. I wish Ji-won had a weightier episode that focused on her because I found her “terrible secret” to be rather anticlimactic. So she lies/lied. That’s it? Oftentimes, the cheeriest of people are the ones fighting the hardest battle, and I wanted her battle to be as trying as the other girls’, but it honestly didn’t seem like she had any major issues. There were quite a bit of unanswered questions, but I have to say I was generally satisfied with the way it ended. Ending with Edith Piaf’s “Non, je ne regrette rien” playing over the scene where the elegant landlady (#AgingGoals) applies her red lipstick and puts on her diaper led me to believe that the girls’ “Belle Époque” continues, through the good times and the bad.

W–Two Worlds: I’m a few episodes behind, but I’m having such difficulty tuning in to this show. I feel so detached from the characters and not at all invested in their peril.

Moonlight Drawn by Clouds: I just saw the first episode, and I feel like I would’ve liked it if I were twelve. Maybe I’ll give it a few more episodes just for Jinyoung…

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 1 was so-so. Episode 2 was GREAT. Episode 3 was even better, so I hope this upward trajectory continues. Those close-up shots of Kang Haneul’s gazes? They make my knees weak.

tineybeanie

Cinderella and the Four Knights: Park So-dam is a bundle of energetic charisma. I’d love to see her more in Dramaland. Also, second lead syndrome has struck again. I’m totally Team Hyun-min, despite his initial douchebaggery. Even after six episodes, Ji-woon still seems like a jerkface who can’t seem to recognize the gemstone that is Park So-dam, right in front of him.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: So many expectations. Hopefully, it improves because so far I’m not so over-the-moon about it.

Our Gap-soon: I’d rather have started the So-rim romance from the beginning, than from the middle. I feel like I’ve missed the best bits, and am left in the post-oxytocin-rush days when there’s nothing but lukewarm passion.

W–Two Worlds: Okay, I’m still here, but a lot of the delicious suspenseful tension is gone, now that I’m pretty secure in the fact that no matter what happens, our two main characters will survive. Remember, there’s no story if there are no characters (according to W and real life).

I oddly have absolutely nothing to complain about when it comes it Taecyeon and his Bong-pal. That's the best I've ever seen him. And that's not because his standard was low to begin with but because he really was convincing and extremely heart warming. Never thought I'd ever describe him as that, but what a fantastic way to go off before military. A hit drama and great improvement in skills.

As for the drama, it had its downs but it was so freakin sweet. I know the cuteness is obvious but I was pulled in by how normal and realistic the main leads were despite one being a ghost. Bong-pal is like a lot of guys I know - grumpy, frugal but extremely thoughtful and caring. Same with Hyun-ji. When they were together, it was sweet and realistic and a relationship I truly wanted to be in. Ghost was such a darling of a drama, it's amongst my fav this year similar to how much I loved SGG last year.

You guys, I just watched the first episode of Punch and I've gotta say.....the feeeels man. I was curling my toes watching it not because of suspense, action or mystery, but because of one person only.....Kim Rae Won! This is my first time watching him in full length,if 1 episode can be considered that. I first saw him in some clips of the movie Plum Blossom where I found him a handsome badboy who liked to get around. But the biggest impression that he left me with was.....nice butt!
So now that I'm finally watching Punch, I was startled at first by how older he had gotten having seen no recent pics of his, just wasn't interested in the Doctors recaps. My my, his sooooooo attractive its distracting. He's aged so fine! I swoon at his deep voice, his wrinkle lines and just about the way he carries himself with that commanding air.
My thoughts on the episode: I think 90% of my enjoyment came from marvelling at Kim Rae Won and how much he has changed, matured so well. I'm also really enjoying

W: Still my drug, I thought I would tire of the action and the emotional rollercoaster but I feel like everything is still tightly written, coherent and frankly, when you understand the rules, it all comes together to raise the stakes. I love that it's a bit of a puzzle for my brain with a compelling OTP to boot. LJS and HHJ are everything.

Cinderella & 4 Knights: Still using this as a healing drama after W. It works. I'm pretty sure if I saw this at most other times, I might have switched off because it is pretty cliche but it goes so well with W. PSD is adorable and the 4 knights also add fun and personality. It's such an easy watch for the weekends, and AJH is a delight here.

Heirs: Not really watching this by choice, but my mum is and it's on the background when I chill with her. Let's just say, I'm probably part of the group that is indifferent with it and has no idea how it was successful, thinks everyone looks too old to be in high school and thinks everyone should go their own ways and meet normal people when they're older. This drama kind of makes everything else seem much better by comparison - especially Cinderella. There's rich and entitled, then there's rich and douchey.

Another Oh Hae Young: I'm just at the point where I'm not really that invested on finishing it, but when I do tune into an episode, I enjoy it.. because Eric and Seo Hyun Jin are cute together, but that's it.

I'm planning on starting a lot of dramas, but I kind of want to wait for W to finish so I don't have too many heavy dramas on my plate, but I need more dramas right now to make the wait for W feel bearable. What do.

Heirs: Not really watching this by choice, but my mum is and it’s on the background

couldn't watch that show, started bad and went downhill from there for me but lol @ watching things in the background. my sister does that for me with major crimes - american tv show - and she did it before with criminal minds lol. that resulted in me recognizing the voices of the actors and following the undergoing story of the season while actually not watching any of the episode-mainstories, and having some shock when having to fit a voice to a person. lol. and now i can't even watch them for myself, cause i'm used to not actually watching but listening to them :D

re:W: if you haven't seen healer, now's the time. the pressure is lower, there's more romance, but the intensity is there. and the chemistry between the MCs carries the show. aaand you get to see JCW playing clark kent and superman, lol.

Wouldn't even say that Eric and SHJ were cute together in OHYA as his character is so grumpy most of the time (the "cute" moments were too few and far inbtwn) - which kinda made their whole relationship/romance a bit unbelievable.

Moonlight Drawn by Clouds is a youthful sageuk but it doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it. I think the acting is very impressive and it feels very fresh, light and in the following episodes there is an undercurrent of foreboding to come. I hope it remains a pleasure to watch. Perhaps I'm revealing too much but when I was twelve I was watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...

I think moonlight is youthful because the cast is averagely young so they can make this young/fresh vibe alive but when they need to turm serious, the actor can execute it pretty well.

W give me the spirit of anime live action ala death note and log horizon as game.
The world is collapses and we need to find what we can do to win our lives.

I think the unsure rule part of W is the charm for me and not others. I perfectly understand it, I always understand the story from the 1st watch for W and never needed 2nd watch to know the story, just a occasional rewatch when missing the character on screen.

W give this unsure feeling about what can and can't do but also suffer for kdrama trope that the hero will always won and kdrama loved their happy ending, so viewer get juggled in this plot who is want to make anything unsure but have the faith in kdrama trope, they'll make it to the end.

W and Log horizon start almost the same because I see many people thought that the hero is too smart for their own good, which is work for me because self awareness is my niche, I love character that know what they should do and have adventure every time but I see how that can removes the suspense and the relatable factor for others.

Still really enjoying W and attached to the character (probably because I am familiar with this kind of MC, anime has many kangchul but rarely has yeon joo)

I miss Age of Youth. This was my regular weekend drama along with C&4K which I'm fast forwarding only to watch Hyun Min. After watching the preview of the 8th episode I can't bring myself to watch it.

I'm travelling back to India in less than a fortnight so I was out shopping yesterday at Melbourne Central and that's when I learned Train to Busan was playing at Hoyts. I convinced a friend to watch it with me and boy, did we love it. I'm not sure when they had started screening it here in Oz, but I'm so glad I got to watch it before I left.
I wish I can watch it again with my sister but they don't screen Korean movies back home ?

Never have I been so glad I gave up TV four years ago and only watch dramas on my glorious MacBook Pro Retina laptop. The visuals are stunning beyond belief!!! I feel sorry to hear that the TV version of Moon Lovers - and other shows - are not matching what is coming through on good computers. It sure does point to where the future lies in our watching habits.
And Oh - As a breast cancer survivor I'm LOVING Jealousy Incarnate!! The hospital scenes are so darned accurate - especially post-op - that it's completely refreshing. This is a cute love story too. So many dramas to love right now. My #1 fave is Moonlight Drawn by Clouds because the entire feeling of the drama changed in episode 4. YOWZA!!!!!

Signal- I'm currently back on watching this. I decided not to marathon it because this show gets you in the heart and I need to keep it somehow intact for the other shows I'm watching. It's so intense that I need a break every now and then.

W- It is ending soon and I cannot wait to see how the writer will finish it. I am holding out on my comments about perceived cracks in writing until I see the last episode. Let's see if she addresses the remaining questions/issues. She did address previous questions/"plot holes" and showed that she did not miss them and were not thrown in the story randomly. She may simply have decided to wait for what she thinks is the perfect time to reveal them. Normally I'd give up on any other drama that's like this, but I've seen the previous works of this writer and I trust her.

As for the W romance, it's funny how I found my kindred spirits in this thread. In the recaps, I was looking if other viewers found the romance flat as well and only found a handful. And they are all here! lol I don't feel alone anymore. I may not be invested in the romance, but after all the shit KC and YJ went through, I want them to have a good ending. If it will be a sad one for the sake of the story's logic, so be it.

Moonlight Drawn by Clouds- I finally caught up on Moonlight and I love it so far. PBY and KYJ are a pair made in heaven. Love the chemistry.

Pinocchio- Re-watching this when I'm not doing anything because I miss everyone in this show.

W is my favorite, and I'm quite surprised at the negative comments hurled at it here. The complaints boil down to (as far as I can see) the convoluted world-building and lack of emotional engagement.

I'm surprised on both counts, honestly. The world-building so far has been tight, and the new rules (and respective consequences of rule-bending) follow previously established logic. Chul can call people into the webtoon, but since the webtoon is set where he is, it makes perfect sense that he can call characters to and from both worlds. The Killer can travel across both worlds following the same logic. The new rules are corollaries to the old ones. They don't negate each other. For a story whose very premise is built on breaking all kinds of rules separating fiction and real, it has been successful in setting up new ones.

The lack of emotional engagement I don't get, probably because I am very much emotionally engaged. Survival doesn't necessarily mean a happy end. In His Dark Materials, a pair of lovers from different worlds end up separated for the rest of their lives once the portals across worlds are closed. They make a promise to be at a place that's common to the two worlds at a certain night every year so they can at least be "together" in a sense even as they move on with their lives. I wouldn't be surprised if we get that kind of ending, but I want Chul and Yeon-joo to keep on fighting to be together until the very last episode.

Required fields are marked *

I also surprise by the complaint but I guess not many people like to keep guessing,
I thought the rule is clear out, the sequence of scene just happen too fast so people can't grasped if the rule is applied or not.
I find W makes all the sense and their emotional struggle is fitted.

W don't have anything people can compare to in their world building theory so it can make people confuse but no one knews, thats why we discover new rule and application eacg time, we don't have the manual, we need to make it ourselves and as long as it not contradictory then the world building is fit.

And this is another reason why I'm fully emotionally and mentally engaged. I feel like Chul and Yeon-joo and I are on the same page, figuring out rules and thinking through possible consequences as events unfold. It's exciting that I can't figure out what happens next because I'm in the same headspace as the main characters.

I also like figuring out the rule and guessing what route should we take,

then it's intriguing when you get outsmarted by the villain,
I like a villain who has plan and idea because they just have to,
as much as sad the way the killer died,
I find it fitted,
then there's this feeling it feels like we've done what we can but we can't always win, we are not the only one who thought and make plan,
then the plot also never hesitate to broke our heart apart . . .
hahaha I guess I do like it so much and it's nice to saw someone who enjoy it as much as I do . . ..

Yay fellow W fan! *high fives*

I haven't been this mentally engaged by a drama in AGES, and I'm very much enjoying the experience. I generally tend to stick to the recaps comments because I find the discussions over there stimulating, but I felt I had to defend W's honor when I read the comments in this article.

The things Chul (and Yeon-joo) missed when rationalizing how the webtoon works are so obvious in hindsight because these things have been set up episodes before. You really do have to pay attention to fully appreciate the payoff, and so far W has got me hook, line, and sinker. I'm game for everything this writer throws at me.

0

I watch W with my sister, who is all about good plots and good writing. Even at times when I'm confused, possibly because I haven't been paying attention or haven't taken the trouble to puzzle things out, she still likes it and thinks it all hangs together, so she has me convinced. And even if I honestly believed the plot had lost its way (which I don't), I would keep watching for Kang Chul, who has achieved what I previously thought impossible and made a Lee Jong-seok fan out of me.

Yay for you and your sister!

W's internal logic doesn't focus on the limitations of its worldbuilding so much as on pushing the boundaries of said limitations. It's about possibility. If you ask the show "Why?" The show will answer "Why not?" and give you a rundown of events that support this. I love, love, love this show and how it goes for creative risks rather than be limited by writing conventions.

I guess one reason a lot of the plotting goes over my head is that I am really focused on the characters, their motivations, and their actions. For example, I love that Oh Yeon-joo brought the matter of Kang Chul's flickering hand out into the open. I love characters who communicate with the people important to them, who make sensible decisions, who think and act instead of just reacting. On that score, I've frequently been impressed by the characters in this show.

This too! I love that Yeon-joo speaks out. She's not shy about expressing her feelings, and I love that she outright tells Chul how she suffered after retconning their romance. The only time she wilfully kept something from him, she only did so because they both agreed upon it. Her outspokennes is a contrast to Chul's relative reticence. I love that she engages him to talk to her, and I love that he is honest with her. He doesn't sugarcoat the fact that he doesn't remember her at all, but he doesn't hold back from expressing his interest.

As you can tell, there's a lot of things I love about this drama. I can wax poetic about W all day long and still find something to gush about the next day.

juvenile can means an individual organism that has not yet reached its adult form, sexual maturity or size, childish or a minor..

after watched moonlight, I think it better to give it 2nd thought since ep3-4 wasn't juvenile, they maybe young but they have material in plot and acting capability

The comedy part does not sit well with me. Its just so ...... Falling into the ditch, the tests??? ... I'm not much into slapstick comedy.

I did watch till episode 3 and half of episode 4, but by then i was pretty much fast forwarding. Thats why I said i prefer SS, its an oldie but a goldie with the same gender bender theme.

Plus there is an ick-factor. I don;t mind if there is a 20 year gap but at least let the actress be an adult.

I watched MOTW so i thought I was ok with it and its no big deal. But I had to drop 'lets fight ghost' despite enjoying it, after all the kissing started. So in moonlight too, when all the convenient brushing up against each other started , i had to get out. Some people might be ok till there is no overt kissing and some even after that , but i am going to check everyone's age before starting a drama now.

FYI, Bogum is only 23, and Yoojung's turning 17 in less than 2 weeks. If that's still too large of an age gap for you, that's fine, but it's not like they're 15 years apart like Lets Fight Ghost was...

I have a minor-adult issue. I don't mind a huge age gap say in 'marriage contract' as long as both are adults.

In my country we have 50 year old actors romancing 25 year olds. so it is not the gap per say that is an issue.

@bipps99
I think Koala wanted to say that
"Moonlight is youthful but not juvenile, "
juvenile bring a bad connotation to describe something and since you're pretty much fast forwarding, it means it just wasn't your taste and you didn't really watch it,

the ick-factor probably means much for you,

Exactly, what others are finding youthful, i'm finding juvenile, or OTT, or slap-stick .... I found say CITT youthful despite its really dark theme. but this isn't ticking my boxes.

And I did watch 3 episodes completely. So I think i saw enough to make an assessment. But when in the 4th i started fast forwarding, I realised this show is not for me.

Obviously the show is very well loved so my opinion is really of a minority.

I just finished watching its okay its love and I'm having withdrawal pains. Lol. That drama was perfect for me, flaws and all. And gong hyo jin's character was just perfect and is one of the most realistic female characters I've watched in any kdrama. Because she had so many flaws and was just so complicated as a character, I completely understood her. She was human. And then Jo in Sung was just fantastic. I love the whole cast as well. Now i need to watch dramas with more characters like her: flawed, realistic characters. I should watch Age of youth.
I'm watching bring it on ghost too. But I think it's too soon to watch it after its okay its love. I just can't get into it yet. Though it's cute and all. I'll save it and watch it another day.
And I'm loving beautiful mind as well. I dont find Park So dam's character annoying at all. I understand why she is acting that way. She is a rookie. She is not a detective. Obviously she will make mistakes and will do a bad job. Plus that's her first investigative case. So I could get the reasons for all her stupid actions, hence I didn't find her annoying. Anyway, I love this drama so much and it just hurts that the episode was cut. I feel so bad.

I'm watching The Moon Embrace the Sun and that is the only drama that hook me. first the OTP just perfect. they balance on the acting and cuteness and more. then all other aspect just make them better. cinematography also wonderful and the directing.
I was invested in W but then it doesn't make sense anymore. I try to watch is but it seem something makes me not connect with W anymore. the OTP seems to lack of something but I can tell what, to make me claim them as a Hot OTP.

last I love Jealousy so much. though GHJ characters seem similar with the one in master sun.

I wish UF to end quick. scarlet to be better or I will drop it because I can not connect with it.

Currently watching:

W: just 3 episodes left and I still can't get the corpse from Han river wearing a ring from an earlier episode out of my head. The show is highly enjoyable but it is not without flaw/s, but it's ok, because Su-bong is so squishy. ?

Cinderella & 4 Knights: I like this show, I like Ha-won, Hyun-min, Ji-woon, Seo-woo and Mr. Secretary but I just can't bring myself to like Hye-ji. I don't know if it's just the way the character is written or if it's the limitations of Na-eun's acting talent (she has that bored expression in every scene). All she does is sit around and sew and get pricked and then she expects Hyun-min to like her back? Like what the heck?! She's not scheming or conventionally evil like the step mom & the stepsister but she's a lazy character that has a misplaced sense of entitlement to Hyun-min's affections just because they were childhood friends. Oops, sorry. Haha... rant over! ?

Scarlet Heart: Lee Jun-ki and his perfectly chiseled face. I skip scenes here and there but never when LJK or Haneul is on screen. This two are hard carrying the show (at least for me) right now.

3 Meals A Day Gochang Village: Chajumma, Papa Yoo, sons Ho-jun and Joo-hyuk, make such a cute family. I laughed so hard watching the last episode when they had their picture taken along with Papa Yoo's real life pet corgi Winter. Their poses, LMAO. ???

Totally agree with Javabeans comments this week, mainly on:
W - the rules changing too annoying, i must be among the not-too-smart ones, given up on the logic of things and just enjoying the pretties.
Moonlight - awesome drama of the week for me now, I dislike Ep 1 for the overcuteness, but so glad it has matured into such awesomeness.
Moonlovers - yep I was wondering why is the lighting and set up look totally fake.
UF - another yep, the story sucks big time, no need for other excuses

Taking a break from W Two Worlds, it's starting to get too 'plot twist' for me to care about week to week, I'll wait for this one to finish before finishing it off.

Uncontrollably Fond - I haven't given up (only 2 eps left) but the last 2 weeks I've watched one and read the recap of the other. I just want to see what happens but no longer need to watch it unfold.

Moon Lovers - this one didn't keep me glued to the screen at the time, but it's the one I can't stop thinking about. Soo made me incoherently angry (you should know better than to go around hitting people - even in modern day Korea you wouldn't get away with that! And let's not forget the following in into the woods). But I also found myself laughing out loud at many of her fish out of water scenes. Prince So is a woobie I want to cuddle into my chest and soothe his poor wounded soul. Lee Joon Gi is amazing and I felt every single moment of hurt he had whenever he dealt with this terrible parents. Poor bb. I don't want him off my screen for even a second.

Moonlight - Love it. Cute, fun, with a good and interesting more serious plot line. I enjoy every single second.

Fantastic - Think I'm going to love it. Already love the 3 female friendship.

Let's Fight, Ghost! Ended with a whimper and not with a bang but I'm very content with it and happy to see where our characters ended up.

Age of Youth - after a really thoughtful 10 episodes this one took a turn in the last week with a abrupt kidnapping scene. I couldn't concentrate on anything else until they got her back. But overall a story about 5 girls and their friendship was a really lovely and intense ride.

Second to Last Love - I don't watch this week to week but still find myself checking in with this one. I like it, but the characters can be frustrating.

Chinese Love O2O - The drama adaptation of Just One Smile is Very Alluring (author wrote Boss & Me, My Sunshine) has been pumping out the episodes in the last 2 weeks and it is pretty much spot on for the novel. Very enjoyable and cute story. Very light fun.

Cinderella & 4 Knights - am still hooked on this one but the obsession is wearing off. Park So Dam is amazing (I think I'll be watching her in future). The story line is a bit ... there's something about it that isn't quite gelling but I can't put my finger on what.

Our Gab Soon - couldn't get through the first episode. The male lead is a character that I just can't stand to see on my screen. I just wanted her to leave him and find someone better.

There are other non-Korean ones but I won't get into them here. :)

I was wondering what was bothering me about Moonlight Drawn By Clouds and "...I would have liked it if I were twelve" summed up my thoughts rather perfectly. I didn't realize that's how I felt about it until I read it. The show is pretty and it's decently shot, the music is great and the cast is decent enough, but the plot feels middle-grade, her disguise is paper thin, and, to me, Park Bogum's acting is 80% everyone-tells-me-I'm-cute-so-let-me-just-act-cute and 20% overreacting which isn't bad in and of itself but I can just FEEL how terribly far from the target audience I was while watching the first three episodes. (Like someone who usually watches HBO and Showtime finding themselves tuning in to a sitcom on Disney.)

I want to give Jealousy Incarnate another try. The initial premise was intriguing. The first episode hooked me at the beginning but failed to keep me by the end, but I want to at least try one more time with episode two. (But like you guys said, there's no harm in dropping something.)

I've heard a lot of great things about FantastiC and I will try to at least watch the first episode some time this weekend.

W Two Worlds is another show that started off VERY strong, with a unique premise and detailed mythology. I tried to steer clear of the hype but it had me hooked through the first 5-6 episodes... and then gradually started to lose me as the weeks went on. I quit it. Picked it back up. Then quit it again. As objectively as possible, I really think it's because there's very little build up. It's Big Reveal after Big Reveal but so few reveals felt like they had lasting repercussions. Plus, everything happens so fast (as in for the overall pacing of the story, not necessarily what's happening on screen) that many parts of the later episodes feel like filler as the writer rummages around in their Plot Hat for a new mystery. It doesn't help that the first ten ENTIRE minutes of every episode is an unnecessary recap. I'm certain it is because of all the pre-emptions so that the audience can stay on track but they went OVERBOARD and I found myself losing interest before the episodes properly started. I feel like the show would have been more successful if they spaced all these Big Reveals more evenly and gave them time to breathe and expand. They also definitely needed to pump the brakes on their insta-love.

EXACTLY. This sums up my feelings for the show perfectly.

So maybe part of my disconnect is not due to the show itself, might be just me. Everyone says its well crafted but i can literally anticipate every single scene and roll my eyes at it. 5 years back I might have enjoyed the show. But now i'm just not its target audience.

My respect for this drama is going to rise manifold if in the next episode it turns out that the ending of 4 was not YET ANOTHER fake out. I'm reasonably entertained by MDBC but I feel like I'm too old to really enjoy being jerked around like "DID HE SEE HER. WILL HE FINALLY REALIZE SHE'S A GIRL...no of course not, it's only episode 4."

Personally, I'm not there for the plot (and frankly, I don't think most fans of the drama are). And interesting storyline and good twists would obviously be a plus, but that certainly isn't its strength.

It's strength is with the acting skills of the cast, especially with the leads, with the interactions of the characters, and with the beautiful simplicity that the production staff have given us. Scenes like that dance, and Yeong's confrontation with his father.

Of course, if an interesting and unique plot is what you're looking in a drama (which is fine, that's just personal preference), then naturally Moonlight won't be for you.

That's true, which is why I'm still enjoying it and will probably continue watching it. I had higher expectations because I watched it after the Scarlet Heart premiere and the comparison comments and ratings escalation, which made me excited about it, and want to check it out since I assumed it would be something very different, because of its reception, so I guess I just hyped it for myself.

I'm only watching for the 4-lead cast, they're great. But because I'm not interested in the story, my investment at any point where the lead cast is not interacting with each other is very low. Besides I don't watch sageuks, so it's difficult to get used to them. (Which is why a much criticized crack!sageuk like Scarlet Heart personally works better for me because it doesn't have that traditional feel or tone and is easier to get acclimatized to. But exactly that is its shortcoming for sageuk fans.)

Either way, it's only episode 4, so there's plenty of time for them to surprise me. If not, Moonlight is just adorable and I've been a huge fan of these actors since a while now, so I'm content to just watch for them.

Moonlight: fun, cute, with more heartwarming moments starting to rise to the surface. I'm not here for the plot, and had actually zero expectations coming into the show (except for PBG's and KJY's acting talents), but after 4 eps I've decided to stick to it till the end. I like the subtle approach it takes to relationships, and it's that subtlety that wins my heart. Besides, KJY is as great in sageuks as ever. I have always loved her and love her more with this show.

Moon Lovers: I was initially VERY skeptical with the show due to the casting (well, for a project worth 15 billion wons and built on an iconic Chinese drama where even the supporting cast do their characters justice I think it's not too harsh to expect the same from the Korean front) and the first two eps are a major let-down to me, considering how much the trailers and previews try to sell it to the audience. Ep 3 is so much better and I've decided to stick around with it for a few more episodes to see the direction that it's heading to, though I must admit I don't like the writer's male-centric approach to the story. Let's hope that she won't reduce HaeSoo to the stereotypically naive and helpless female lead usually seen in Korean dramas.

Let's fight, ghost: Oh my Ghostess & Arang vibe with similar plot details (amnesia in the afterlife which is linked to murder possibility in the previous life & the second male lead is the suspicious one) but so far so good, I'm enjoying it.

Jealousy Incarnate: Not really blown away by it, but not completely turned off either. I'm giving it a go after ep 4 since the story is still interesting enough for me so far.

C&4K: I'm wondering whether or not to drop it after ep 7. The prospect of Hyun Min getting together with the 2nd lead girl makes my blood boil lol. Not sold on either the character or the actress playing Hye Jin.

W - still engaging for me,although I'm slowly losing the plot twists.good thing it's in its last 3 episodes.

Ca4K - dropped already not even JIL's charm can lure me back for some reason.

Moon Lovers/Scarlet Heart - still on the fence to watch it for LJG.will pick it up at some point.

38TF - almost done just in time before SKL

What I'm watching:

Moonlight: as long as KYJ in there, I'm sold and the male main character is absolutely eye candy.

W: it's still give me the thrills so I will stick to it till the end and even plan my upcoming 7 weeks off to binge on it.

Let's fight Ghost: I'm already on episode 10 before I stop so I'm planning to renew watching it after W is done.

Is there a good drama you can recommend? A drama that is unpredictable and engaging?

Uncontrollably Fond is frustrating at times but there are still moments I thoroughly enjoy. Eul is especially awesome. I wish there were more female leads like that.

Moon Lovers is very different from the original novel and Chinese version, and therefore I could see myself being invested in it. I watched it both on TV screen and laptop, and both were visually stunning. I found no problem with the directing, only with the writing that I disliked - the male-centric and downplay of the female lead, the budding love between Hae-soon and the 8th Prince despite Lady Hae. I mean, I understand it was the old time and all that, but this particular detail i found myself comparing it with the original novel and Chinese version, because in those Ruoxi knew her sister was completely detached from the 8th Prince so her sister wasn't an issue in their love. I still like it when Hae-soo and Wook are together (look at their chemistry!!), but Lady Hae is also there at the back of my mind. It doesn't help that the 4th Prince So continuously threatens to kill Hae-soo - in no way I could see it as romantic/a guy who threatens to kill the girl to be prospect partner. It's amazing that Lee Jun-ki makes it work since this is the drama I watch of him and I actually like him.

W is still my top favourite show. Currently I am watching W & C4K and still W tops for me. I am loving every bit of it and love to predict and guess.

Many are saying they are not able to grasp anything, but thankfully I am able to and loving the rational and smart hero Kang Chul. Was tired to see dumb leads

As for romance, I feel for them. KC might seem restrained, but his actions speak louder thn words and in episode 13 when he went batshit crazy when killer fired YJ and he ultimately killed killer was epic for me. I felt his emotions and when said I am her husband, I was in aww.
The dream of YJ, I just want happy ending for them and W is my fav Korean drama ever

i find myself finding hidden meaning and minute changes in the charas' behaviour according to whoever is drawing the manhwa at the time, lol, i'm that involved in it. as in, when KC came out of the water he was still deathly sad and weary of living - because he was still under shock after learning how things actually "were" and it shows when confronting YJ. and then she breezily tells him she's taken rein and wants a romance instead of a revenge-thriller, and he starts "finding new purpose", cheerful suddenly... in my mind it's almost like she did change him just by taking over. and the story goes back and forth between genres because there's not one single author.
and i pity him - and her - because neither yet owns their own fate.

one thing's for sure - i'll never read the last page of a book again with the same eyes. all those worlds, all those possibilities, all those people (imagined or not.)

do you know what anime viewers call characters like Kang Chul (W)?

overpowered and a Gary Stu
and one with lots of plot armor

this anime lover here doesn't.

fact 1: he can't even find and destroy the killer who got his family. and you didn't see him actually "getting" anyone else that impact on anything. how is he overpowered?...

2. no harem. does an unrequited crush count as second lady and do two girls - in a huge line of males, mostly romance-less - make it a harem for him? cause it sure isn't a reverse-harem either.

3. the first incarnation of KC - the not-awake one - was someone with an iron will who fought crime. as soon as he learns different, he crashes and burns. and then he picks up the pieces and tries again, without much luck so far. his only advantage is having a woman fan-girling over him up to re-drawing finished manhwa stories just to help him. perfect? i think not.

so yeah, different opinions among anime viewers too, i guess.

Lol, I didn't even hear about Gary Stu because of anime. I heard about it because I was trying to find out the male version of a Mary Sue in literature. This is like the second or third time I've seen it applied to the anime community.

As @shelly said, this anime viewer isn't calling him a Gary Stu. Maybe an ikemen but Chi-yeol in Jealousy Incarnate stole that from Kang Chul.

"Uncontrollably Fond: You had months and months to pre-produce your show, and this is the best you could do? This drama didn’t fail because it was pre-produced, or because it cast Suzy, or because it aired at the wrong time, or because it had strong competition. This drama’s downfall is its writing..."

I'm truly sad cos this drama has finally made me realize that Suzy cannot act. She looks disinterested most of the time, mumbles through her lines.. Where's the chemisty between our OTP? Can't see it, can't feel it at all. Before this, I ignored all comments about her acting cos I really like her in Dream High and Big. Off screen, she's likeable enough. But this drama dealt a blow to me *sob sob*

Been a productive weekend so far (in terms of drama watching, but not school hehe)

Completed:
The Good Wife - Not a perfect finale, but I really really liked this show. Not sure if they are setting up for a second season though?

Beautiful Mind - I've finally finished this and I'm having withdrawal symptoms. I teared up unexpectedly during the final few episodes. Possibly one of my favourite dramas of 2016.

Catching Up:
W - Episode 8: After picking this up again (haven't been watching to catch up with The Good Wife), I again realised why I stopped following this weekly (same reasons as what most of you mentioned). Started to watch this at a faster speed on VLC Player while revising for Korean class, and I felt that I didn't even miss anything.

Going to start on:
Jealousy Incarnate: Because I like Gong Hyo Jin enough to follow all her dramas
Second To Last Love: Still hasn't found the time to start on this but hopefully once W is done then I'll have more time.
Laurel Tree Tailors: Only if KBS World uploads it on its Youtube channel!

"Life is too short for bad dramas"

A motto i now live by. When i first got into Kdramas i used to force myself to complete watching the drama even if i had lost interest long ago,but now i know better.
This is the reason why i dropped UF around Ep 11. I love a good heart wrenching melodrama and this writers past works have been some of my favourite but UF has none of that old charm. I wholly agree with JB and i think this dramas biggest weakness was the writing.

W-Is this show too smart for me?!? My interest is weaning a bit now. Wondering whether i should continue or just follow recaps.

Moonlight drawn by clouds-This is a wonderful drama with a solid cast.I'm enjoying this quite a bit.

Moon Lovers- I'm actually enjoying both the Moon dramas and my Mon-Tue are happy days now. Even if there are a few gripes here and there, the overall story and plot and ofcourse Lee Jun Ki is keeping me very interested for now.

yeah, well, for me, the interesting shows come few and far between. last one making me watch it in real-time was healer, and since then i only binged on DOTS, but that one kind of dragged on in the second half - i finished it because they had good chemistry and the soundtrack was good.

W is making me watch in real-time again, raw and barely waiting for the subs to watch it again. for me it's high entertainment. i am a sci-fi and fantasy lover, i do read manhwa and manga, i like good plots that have an inner logic and i don't need the main charas to fall forever in love and pine endlessly for each other. W is just perfect for me. and if you watch the episodes again, after being aware of what's going to happen, you have time to notice just how good an actor LJS actually is - his micro-expressions are perfection itself. HHJ as initially clueless YJ is also very good - she's not a super-heroine, but a not-that-bright-but-cute girl who gets to be a world-maker and doesn't do all that well with her new power. imagine yourself doing it. how great at it would you be? she's especially good with emotions in the second half, and well - i guess to each his/her own. the plot makes sense, it's not boring, there are rules, though subtle, and no one's a super-hero anymore. the end could go any which way. this is one show i could re-watch more than once, just for the love of it, even after i'll learn the ending.

none of the other airing shows do that for me - not even ML:SH:R (despite myself being a LJK fan.) i guess fusion sageuk/fantasy/time-traveling/ghost/medical/copycats-from-american-shows etc aren't my cup of tea. i could care less about romance and lachrymose stories, they went all over the place in the last few years.

the next one i'm interested again in is K2 - and that mostly because of JCW, who is a great actor if the role allows him to show his range. if he has to go to the army, i hope his drama, who might be last before leaving, leaves a good impression.

I was saddened to read about people dropping W and feeling that it no longer was following its own rules. Relieved that later in the comments people still loving it voiced their support. I'm still loving it ,too, and feel that rather than breaking the rules they're exploring the full implications of those rules. Also the show has made me interested in what other work LJS has done. Can't wait for the last 3 episodes but also don't want it to finish!

I'm watching both Age of Youth and Fantastic right now and they're both light, zippy shows despite how they tackle dark subjects. These are my type of shows --- shows with relatable characters tackling everyday-life subjects.

Fantastic has been fantastic so far. I love the no-nonsense female characters and Park Si Yeon and Kim Hyun Joo are both doing really well in their roles. I can't wait for Park Si Yeon's character to get out of that house. I have no problems with her getting with Jisoo and I actually want her to get together with him. She's spent too long losing her spunky character in that marriage. I really like Kim Hyun Joo's character, too, and how she's not spending her days moping around after that cancer sentence. Looking forward to the next episodes! BTW, Joo Sang Wook's so funny as a "foot actor", LMAO!

W/ AoY being finished and before that, PU38, didn't have much to watch aside from finishing BIOG (while cute and fun, started to go downhill w/ the writer taking too many non-sensical "shortcuts").

So started to watch the shows that were on my list w/ "Bad Guys" being the 1st (due to PU38).

Don't know how BG escaped my notice since I'm pretty up on the dramas that get critical acclaim/are known for their writing - and BG was recapped as well on DB.

BG also had an actor I really liked (thru his film work) - Kim Sang-joong, who is beyond excellent in his role (now, going to have to also check out "The Chaser" due to KSJ) and another actor that I liked in Jo Dong-hyuk.

Why isn't JDH a bigger star?

JDH has great facial features (better looking than the so-called "pretty boys"), can act and has charisma galore.
