Kim Young-kwang to live in Su Ae’s house for new KBS rom-com

Su Ae, Kim Young-kwang, Jo Boa, Lee Soo-hyuk

The leading cast is starting to come together for the webtoon adaptation drama The Man Living in Our House, the upcoming KBS romantic comedy that stars Su Ae (Mask) as a woman who comes to her hometown and discovers a younger man living in her family home, who professes to be her stepfather. Kim Young-kwang (D-Day) is considering an offer to play the stepfather, and his real-life buddy Lee Soo-hyuk (Lucky Romance) is up for a supporting role, along with Jo Boa (Monster).

The webtoon comes from writer Yoo Hyun-sook of Ho-gu’s Love and I Steal Peeks At Him Every Day (the webtoon that Flower Boy Next Door was based on). Flower Boy Next Door writer Kim Eun-jung is up to pen this adaptation as well, and PD Kim Jung-min of Princess’s Man and Joseon Gunman will be at the helm. The drama is a light family romantic comedy about a mysterious young man with a rough past, and the family he wants to protect at all costs.

Su Ae stars as an independent, prickly flight attendant who believes a little too much in her own intuition, and doesn’t have a very good handle on her stress levels. She expects to be printing wedding invitations any day now with her boyfriend of nine years, when he cheats on her with one of her co-workers. It leads the heroine to head to her hometown because she’s in such a depressed state, but when she arrives at her family home, she finds a strange younger man living there, claiming to be her deceased mother’s husband.

Kim Young-kwang is up to play the stepfather, a farmer who has lived a very eventful life for his twentysomething years. He’s a mysterious man with opposing sides — light and dark, prickly and innocent — and he used to be a legendary gangster who dealt in bonds. The heroine is convinced he’s a conman, but despite appearances, he’s a warm-hearted character whose life goal is to protect his family. I don’t know about the farmer part, but I can picture Kim Young-kwang’s Hot Blooded Youth character growing up and then moving on from his gangster past, and playing both sides of the is-he-a-conman-or-isn’t-he coin.

Lee Soo-hyuk has been offered the role of a highly competitive genius, a wealthy man with a complicated family that’s fighting over inheritance claims. He has mood swings and can be cruel to some, and though he has a dark personality, he acts cool in front of others. He’s a character who only believes in one thing: the power of money. I’m expecting him to be at odds with Kim Young-kwang’s character, but wouldn’t it be nice if they could have a bromance?

I was a little worried to hear that Jo Boa might be picking up another role so soon, when she’s currently in the hospital battling encephalomeningitis and having to adjust her role in Monster because of it. But she’s considering an offer to play a flight attendant who grew up poor and learned at an early age to use her looks to her advantage. She lies and steals to keep her poverty hidden, and finds it easier to befriend men than women because she can fool them easily with her lies.

I’m hoping that the drama stays true to its promise of levity despite the dark undertones in the character descriptions, because there really isn’t going to be a way to pull off this bizarre stepfather romance without a whole lot of hijinks involved. And maybe a lawyer.

The Man Living in Our House is slated to follow Moonlight Drawn By Clouds on Mondays and Tuesdays in late October.

Kim Young Kwang? No please. If he'll sign in, I hope SA will decline it. I have never impressed with his acting. I think he is a bad actor.
SA and the rest of casts are my favorites.

I'm watching Kim Young-kwang in Pinocchio right now and he does have that "There's something weird about this guy but I can't pinpoint what it is" vibe.

10 episodes in and I still don't know if there's something special about the character or the guy is just weird. Hahaha imagine coming home and having to live with that person.

RIP Su-ae's stress levels.

(And though I like that Jo Boa is getting roles, doesn't she need to rest first? What is her agency thinking?!)

Jo BoA has been diagnosed with the same illness like Hyeri, and her agency still want her to continue Monster instead of letting her to get proper treatment. And now new project? This is too much.Pity this poor girl.

I prefer Lee So Hyuk as the leading man, he is better than Kim Young-kwang. LSH gives the weirdly-adorable vibes imo, but KYK just gives the total weird vibe.

I was beyond disgusted to read that her agency sent her back to the set of Monster AFTER she was diagnosed. It was bad enough that Hyeri signed on to Entertainer just days after getting out of the hospital, but this takes the cake.

By all accounts Jo Boa's been very well-received in Monster and is apparently more of a viewer favourite than Sung Yuri, but I can't believe Sidus is actively risking her life for a role that isn't even the main female lead. And now they're going to sign her up for another drama that airs barely a few weeks after her current one ends?

Agree I really feel bad for her. She is still too young. This offer is not enough to be tempting with, not even female lead. Health comes first.

I'd read that her character is more favourable and probably has a better chemistry with male lead. I watched few episodes but Kang Ji-hwan & Sung Yu Ri definitely not enough to catch my attention.

I agree that even a lead role wouldn't have justified taking such a cavalier approach to a serious illness.

But it's even more mind-boggling to me that they did this to her when it would have been so much easier to have the production write in other characters' parts to cover her absence since she isn't the lead. That's just the production/agency being greedy and prioritising their viewer eyeballs over her life.

I used to think Lee Yubi being made to go back to the Scholar Who Walks The Night set with a serious back injury and only two weeks of hospitalisation (when injuries of that nature typically need four weeks out) was bad, but this tops even that.

0

Yes. I think these production / agencies are he evil ones.I am wondering about the terms in their contract with the agency as well as the production. Is there no clause in unavoidable circumstances such as this one? Whatever it is, I think the actors could not really negotiate on the terms of their contract, except the top actors probably since they are in demand and the agency / productions are competing who can get that particular actor.

0

Jo Boa-Ah definitely gave me Second Female Lead syndrome - I want her character to get the guy.

I kind of see why she/her agency wanted to push thru with filming on Monster. She's got good material right now and is building her cred. But yes, health is most important.

0

Jo Boa is my favorite in Monster, she is one of those who can and does steal thunder from those around her. But health comes first. I remember Lee Yubi was sent to the sets same way after that scary accident in Scholar Who Walks The Night set. It's disgusting practice of the agencies.

They're both under the same agency, ironically.

I remember the early reports of Lee Yubi's injury said that she couldn't even walk at the time, I just hope spending two months on live shoot after that didn't leave her with permanent damage. Just as I hope Jo Boa makes a full recovery from this.

0

I reply you guys in another thread. Here is the true:
On Aug 30, actress Jo Bo Ah was diagnosed with encephalomeningitis in the hospital. After finishing filming first of all on Aug 31, she began have detailed examination and treatment.
That means, she stills in hospital now.

Required fields are marked *

Her company confirmed in a statement that she had been diagnosed with encephalomeningitis on 30 August but was sent back to the set anyway because the drama production schedule took priority.

The fact that she was hospitalised later and is still in hospital now doesn't make it right (and are we supposed to applaud her agency for letting her remain in hospital with a possibly life-threatening illness, instead of forcing her back to the set now?)

Of course, everyone want she get better. I agree with the ideal that she shouldn't comeback too soon. If they want, please let her comeback after at least 3 months.
Hyeri also comeback too soon after she had been diagnosed with encephalomeningitis, just after 4 days in hospital.
Agencies too evil..

0

Woah. Hmmm encephalomeningitis is no joke. It's a very serious condition! I for one would NEVER allow a patient suspected of having it to leave hospital...
Not sure if the report on her condition was accurate or her agency went mad.... This makes me wonder about the conditions these actresses and actors have to work under ?
I hope she is resting well and recovers fully.

For most actors - if you want work, you cannot demand to do and not to do things. Probably, this is not the case for high demand actors.

Pity them. I really wish her full recovery as such young age, she should stay healthy. Health comes first.

0

The only thing I find strange about this is that usually patients are VERY sick when they have this illness. It's not something you diagnose willy-nilly. Usually they are very sick with very bad neckache/headache and high fever and some neurological signs and even unstable blood pressure... It's not like a flu. So she wouldn't be able to walk around very much, much less act. So it's just a bit inconsistent with the diagnosis that she could even be well enough to send her back to set at all. Maybe the agency needs to use this kind of very serious problem to be able to justify to the station about delaying a drama, but actually she isn't that sick. Or at least I hope so!

0

Jo Boa needs to start getting lead roles - if her agency is going to do this to her, they better not be piffling second lead roles. She has the talent for it, too.

Exactly, that's how I feel too - he's just not it.

There's something about him that comes off smarmy in every role he's ever had, and it works when that is what the role is going for, like in Hot Blooded Youth and possibly here. But I can never buy him as anything else - D-Day didn't work for me.

I keep repeating the same tune but KYK was quite great on white Christmas..ultimately it depends on the story and writer to make their character memorable...so I think he can do it.Rather the webtoon gives me the vibe that soo ae is too old for the drama.I hope we could see someone a bit new and a fresher may be.I saw her in mask..and somehow felt no chemistry with the actor opposite her...same goes for '...five to nine innings'.I read the writer is the same from flower boy next door.....so why not bring back someone like Kim seul gi maybe lol. Also what I heard about the plot previously...I thought the main female character is supposed to be the same age as the fake dad.

I was bored to death with SA in Mask especially after second half of this drama, second leads made me stay until the end. That could be a reason why actress like Yoo In Young is at her best doing secondary roles, because she can stole scenes from main female lead.

It's funny, Kim Young-kwang has that jerk hero air down pat but possibly a little too pat - I've never warmed up to any of his characters except maybe in Can We Get Married (and even that was more about Han Groo than him).

Also, can someone please sue the cr*p out of Jo Boa's agency, or threaten to? I can't believe they're risking her life for a second lead role, and then on top of that, signing her up for another second lead role while the poor girl is still in hospital.

It's the strangest thing. After watching him and liking him well enough in Can We Get Married, White Christmas, and Plus Nine Boys, it's like I don't really ever need to see him on my screen again. I don't actively dislike him, but I experience disappointment whenever I see him cast in anything. I even liked those roles for him, but I just don't care about seeing him as any other character now.

I watched him in D-Day first. I thought he wasn't traditionally handsome but I could see his appeal...plus those broad shoulders were really doing some work. Then I came across his unfortunate comments. While I don't hold him up to those comments any longer( people change and grow), it really was extra convincing watching him play a smug, Cavalier jerkass. I wanted so much for him to get burned and for her to make him suffer for it.
That being said, I don't mind him, actually, I believe with the right role, he can turn his image around.

I read translated reports on Google that Yoon Shi Yoon was offered lead in this drama, I think either the Indonesian or Thai newspapers carried the news. I was looking forward to seeing him paired with a more age appropriate actress after his MS. Maybe the reports were wrong or he declined this role.

I don't mind KYK, he's not bad and did an admirable job in Pinocchio and D day.

I think most people still dislike him because of a comment he made which went south, about him liking only beautiful people. As for me, I decided not to judge him by that alone. We all say dumb things that we wish we could take back sometimes, and whatever happened to second chances?

He isn't my first pick for the role but I believe he can pull it off. Good luck to him!

Su Ae is not his level as of yet? Excuse me, but she is a more experienced and more versatile actress! She's well known for movies and dramas. I'd like to argue that she is past his level and I've only seen her in Mask where I was blown away by her smoky voice.

A lot of people didn't appreciate Su Ae in Mask and I just don't get it. I feel like everything I liked about her character in that was because of her, while the writer failed to give her much to work with. I remember especially loving her in the first 4 episodes, before the writer suddenly started having the character act as weakly as possible. I also LOVE her smoky voice. It's gorgeous.

I, however, will always remember how much I adored her performance in Bottom of the Ninth with Two Outs. I think she's better in lighter fair like this so I was really excited for it. Unfortunately, the male lead is really not my cup of tea & I'm not looking forward to the pairing. Oh well.

I mean...I guess I'll be that odd person...but. I'll look forward to the show with this leading male. Kim Young Kwang does have a haughty vibe but I've never had any problems with his acting and I'm curious about what he'd bring to the role as opposed to Yoo Seung Ho who Production was previously courting. If the character is supposed to be vague then I think he can do it. I haven't seen enough of him to call him a fave but it's also not enough to write him off, either.

Yay, Lee Soo Hyuk in things again! He was a sweetie in his last drama and now he's back to being antagonistic (?). You go, LSH! Don't let The Man typecast you!! Switch it up! Never let us know what role you'll take on next! Live dangerously, LOL.

And Jo Boa! Ahh, I'm happy at her influx of casting offers but oh no at this timing. Can she rest? Can her character at least be introduced later in the show?

Last, nut not least, I like the writer. So, I hope the show as a whole is a good one.

Canxi you have another person on your team. I was so ezcited to see KYK, ive loved him in all the dramas ive seen him in and I think this drama will be a great fit for his vibe and looks. Im a fannof all the actors up for these roles and I think they will all be a great fit, Su Ae definitely has the prickly, older, self reliant vibe down and I definitely see Jo BoA as a street smart girl who uses her looks to her advantage. Confession: I liked High Society(WHAT?)but I wished the director and actors had a clear and deeper understanding of the characters, granted the writing didn't help.
But even though that was the first Sung Joon show I had ever seen, I just felt like something was missing in that character and I think a lot had to do with his portrayal. I felt he was deeply unsuited for the role.
But then I watched him next in Can We Get Married? and I really liked his dorky character. Gave me Nick Cannon vibes in Love Don't Cost A Thing. He was adorable in the way he tried to please his mother in law but I was with his character growth and how he learned to put his foot down, standing firm.

tbh I pay no attention to interviews and likeability of actors as people - end of the day I know none of them, they have crafeully crafted public personas and the media needs clicks. So I refuse to pass judgement unless there is an actual breaking of laws. In which case pretty sure they won't be doing dramas.

As Okay said "Well, the key is do not give not-so-good criticism to DB folks’ favourite" So as long as you are not a favourite no need to bring out DB rules on being civil is my point :)

I prefer to ignore all offscreen interviews or 'personality' stuff myself, but like I said, KYK isn't really someone I'm burning to see onscreen even based on just his acting.

And while it's tempting to pin it all on some people being db faves and some people not, I have to say I've criticised plenty of db faves in my time and always been met with civil/polite replies or disagreement. I mean, no one dragged me for saying Lee Je-hoon's pronunciation/voice was weird in Signal. That says a lot about db!

Sites have general commentary rules. I think DB does a pretty good job of ensuring a polite space.

But if an actor is popular then the stray negative opinion (valid or not) is buried by the defense. The point of rules is even if an actor is not popular or no one wants to see his/her work the same rules should apply. That was my point.

I can't say I am overly familiar with either actor's work. I was a little surprised at the negativity re KYK and its lack of counter that's all.

Haven't seen HYB but I've watched many KYK projects, some for him and some for others.

I had a feeling the response wouldn't be good. But I wasn't expecting all of this. And I'm even taking into account his irl persona.

Ahhhhhh. I would love it. I barely remembered that guy from OMV, but, after Five Children, I can't wait to see him take-off & get leading roles.

He was a leading man in weekend drama before " A New Tales Of Gisaeng" and "Passionate Love". But yes Five Children was his breakout role I guess.

I need Lee So-Hyuk to be a leading man already! He really deserves it :(

Am I the only one who loved him in Plus Nine Boys? I'm honestly really excited to see him in a lead role again because he and Kyung Soo Jin were just too much for my heart

I really liked him in that, too. I feel like Plus Nine Boys was a good show that either not many watched or just didn't get any real discussion. Also I feel like it was a nice spin on the characters he's kind of cast for. A smooth-talker, and kind of a greasy charmer but sort of reformed and with his heart all in for this one girl, lol.

P9Bs was a favorite of mine when it aired and for a while afterward. KYK did a good job.

Though I did have a mild case of SLS because of Kim Hyun Joon, though KYK solved that real quick.

Speaking of Kim Hyun Joon, can he cameo in this? I've missed him since Imaginary Cat ended.

The only thing I've seen Kim Young-kwang in was White Christmas, and I thought he was fine. But the directing of that drama really elevated everything so it's hard to tell. And all the actors were so green back then.

I'll give it a shot for Jo Boa.

You should definitely watch Pinocchio not really for KYK but for Lee Jong Suk and the family.

There's something wrong with Kim Youngkwang, but I cannot explain what's wrong with him. I totally do not like the way he smile, it is very, very awkward, probably it's a sign that he is not a very talented actor

I'm OK with the male lead. Please make good drama.

Who is it that decided that Kim Young-kwang is a lead material? He already ruined one drama that he was the lead in (D-Day. and that pre-produced drama cost a fortune), so now they want him to ruin another drama? They should have Lee Soo-Hyuk as the lead; Not only he can act, but he is charming and sexy, and has charisma on screen.

To be honest, it is a bit of a stretch to say he "ruined" Dday. It wasn't the acting that killed that show, but the writing and cyclical, repetitive script. At the end of the day, no amount of fine acting can overcome a lousy script. And only the most loyal, die hard fans will stick to a drama when the plot has lost all steam and is limping towards the finish line.

So True! Horrible nonsensical script.

KYK was alright for me in D-Day, there were some emotional scenes he did well like when he was traumatized by the death of those two ahjussis. I stopped that drama at ep 6 and I don't know if I have the will to go back.

Even though I really disliked KYK in Pinocchio, I had no issue with him in Hot Young Bloods. I don't think he suits this role though. I don't get why they'd cast the more popular atm for second lead and KYK as the main lead. Seems like there'll likely be no one without a major case of SLS for that drama lol.

The plot sounds a bit weird to me, but if the webtoonist is the same behind Ho Gu's Love, I think it'll be a good kind of weird. Just hope that when the casting is confirmed it will at least be LSH as the main and KYK as the second lead.

KYK was lead in Plus Nine Boys/Age Ending in Nine Boys. It was tvN, in case you were referring to cable.

At least we know that, if all else fails--with the exception of Su Ae and Jo BoA, because they can both hold their own on screen-- with this PD at the helm, it will be beautifully shot and the cinematography will be gorgeous ~!!!

I am happy about this news. With Su Ae being cast, it makes sense that Yoo Seungho didn't take it. The age thing would have been extra weird even considering some of his past age gaps. And the plot isn't what I want next him. Now I can watch. Three actors I like have joined the cast. I hope Jo Boa gets rest and healing time somehow.

Kim Young Kwang though could use a lead role besides his tvN drama. I've missed him. I couldn't bring myself to watch D-Day despite my like for KYK and my love for Jung So Min. I barely register his role in Pinocchio because around ep 12 he began to annoy me and I had to skip his mother's scenes.

It's been a while since I've seen the KYK of P9Bs, CWGM?, Love Rain, White Christmas and My Fair Lady. I love FBND and I really liked Ho Gu's Love. I hope I can add this one to the list.

The WC boys are making me so proud. They are messing up my order of love for them when I finished that drama and I like that.
Woob, Sung Joonie, Baek Sung Hyun, Lee Soo Hyuk, Hong Jong Hyun, Kim Young Kwang are all present even if some aren't getting the offers I think they should be *cough* LSH and BSH since Doctors. Esom is in movies though I don't know how she's being received.

So my demanding questions: Where is Kwak Jung Wook? And will he ever appear on my screen again?

aww it's finally here! been dying to know who she'll be partnered with--looking forward to Soo Ae doing rom-com. Would have been nice if JCW got this project instead of K2. I think they would both rock it!

I have watched 9 episodes of Sweet Stranger and Me, and Ive got to say I love the intense chemistry between the two and the depth of it. Its captivating, like you can get lost in that bubble of the Hong Dumpling household.

And LSH and Jo Boah have a such a good story going on with each individual character that all those sub plots really do hold up through all the episodes.

I would recommend everyone to watch and also the music is really catchy, Want, Fool, You and I and three other tracks really do have a kick to them.

So don't miss it!
