W–Two Worlds: Episode 8

I… was going to write words, and they were going to make sense, and they were going to be about W. Perhaps they would’ve been words about the love story, or about the fantasy-within-a-fantasy wish-fulfillment of this heightened world, or about my feelings, because I have a lot of them while watching this show. But then I watched this episode, and then my brain exploded.

The End.

Or is it just the beginning?

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Terror sets in as Kang Chul is threatened by No-Face Killer, who has somehow gotten into the real world and is speaking to Chul via chyrons appearing out of thin air. No-Face wants to know how Chul got back into the manhwa world, and notes menacingly that Chul has a new family now.

Yeon-joo stirs awake just as No-Face hangs up on Chul, and she can tell that something’s wrong. But Chul tucks his gun away and just asks her how the last frame of Dad’s manhwa changed from “The End” to “To be continued.” Yeon-joo says she doesn’t know how or why—it just changed one day, and she assumed that there was a reason the story couldn’t end there.

They’re interrupted by the housekeeper, who has a whole array of party dresses lined up for Yeon-joo to choose from. Chul tells her that he heard she had a hard time letting go of Romantic Option One—the Cinderella party—and figured he’d just give her both. (Ahem, what about Option Four?)

He’s been invited to a party at the Blue House and tells her to pick a dress, adding helpfully, “For your information, the more skin it shows, the more I like it.” Am I blushing? Stop that, face! The attendants point out the dress with the lowest neckline, and Yeon-joo laughs nervously and says they shouldn’t take Chul seriously.

Do-yoon calls after trying to trace the phone calls from No-Face, but he’s come up empty. Chul tells him to keep trying, and sits down at his desk to start a new case report for his crime show W. He writes that he’s going to throw away all prior case files and formulate a new hypothesis from here on out: There is a true culprit.

Chul thinks back to the moment when No-Face killed his family and discarded the gun in the alley, and as we see Dad’s hand drawing the frame, Chul narrates that god did not give him physical matter, and so the killer has none—he has no face, and no identity. He writes: “He was born solely to kill my family. So he feels no guilt over murder. He feels no sadness, and of course no pleasure. Because he has no character.”

Chul writes that the killer was merely a tool to make him dedicate his life to fighting crime, and will appear whenever he’s needed in the story, and disappear when he’s not. Chul concludes: “In any space, in any form, without needing any context, according to god’s whims… he can appear at any time and kill.” Well, shit.

Yeon-joo chooses the lacy pink dress and tiptoes out into the living room, wondering if this will be appropriate for such a fancy event. She worries that there will be dancing and twirls across the room by herself, giving the bodyguards something to chuckle over.

She shows Chul the dress and asks if it looks okay, but when she’s met with a silent stare because he’s still so lost in thought over No-Face and his threat to kill her, she assumes that she looks weird and shuffles back out to go change.

Chul finally says, “Go back,” and she points out that she’s already heading back to the dressing room. But he meant back home to her world because it’s dangerous here, and asks if there isn’t some way for her to go home. She doesn’t know how—it’s not like she can control the coming and going—and asks what’s gotten into him.

Without warning, a bullet suddenly flies through the window past Chul. He whips his head around to see where the shot came from, and when he looks back at Yeon-joo, she’s already been shot in the forehead, just like his family.

She falls to the ground in slow-motion as Chul watches, horrified. He peers over his desk to see her body on the floor, except when he does, she isn’t there. He draws in a breath. Did she return to her world?

But he’s shocked when Yeon-joo asks what’s wrong. Oh, did he imagine the whole thing? Gah, stop that! He just rushes over to her and wraps his arms around her in an embrace, relieved that she’s okay. He kisses her on the forehead tenderly, and just holds her for a good long while.

They take a limo to the party, and Chul reminds Yeon-joo to smile for the cameras as they exit. She’s so nervous that she gulps down champagne and decides that maybe she can’t do this after all, but he takes her hand and says to just follow his lead.

So she plasters a nervous smile on her face as they walk the red carpet, but once they’re inside, she gets lost in the real Cinderella moment as he kisses her hand and leads her to the dance floor. Wait a minute, is this a fantasy too? Because for someone who was so worried about the dancing, she seems to suddenly know what to do.

They glide around the dance floor, gazing lovingly into each other’s eyes as he twirls her around and around. Oh, but I spoke too soon—at the final dip, Yeon-joo’s foot slips and she goes crashing to the ground…

…And she falls out of bed as she wakes up from her dream. Ha, was she clumsy in her own fantasy? (Seriously though, now I’m confused about what did happen and didn’t happen, because that was one too many fantasies.)

The bodyguard comes running in and awkwardly offers to help her up from the floor, and Chul rushes in with gun in hand. He wonders how she fell out of bed, and Yeon-joo says sheepishly that she was having a very sweet dream.

She asks if all the bodyguards are necessary, and points out that No-Face can’t harm her no matter what he threatened, because she’s invincible in this world. Chul says that there’s no rule in the universe that doesn’t have variables, so until they can locate No-Face, they’re housebound.

Yeon-joo begins to pout that she just got out of prison only to end up imprisoned here, and rattles off a string of complaints, like the fact that he canceled on the party they were going to, and he told her to mark the sweet romantic things she wanted to do in his book, and promised to do ten a day…

Chul just finds the pouting adorable and offers to do anything in that book that can be done inside the house. I can think of a few. He leads her by the hand into the kitchen, with two giant bodyguards clipping at their heels the whole way.

Once they get there though, Chul grimaces and admits that he only knows how to cook one thing: ramyun. Yeah, we know, you learned that in high school. After watching him look for ramyun packets in the oven, Yeon-joo realizes that Chul doesn’t know his way around the kitchen at all and takes over. She tells him to learn how to cook something for real and make it up to her then.

He seems happy to be absolved of cooking duties for the time being and chitchats while Yeon-joo cooks, wondering about something he can’t understand—why her father is like that. Uh, you’re gonna have to be more specific—Dad’s got a lot of things wrong with him.

Chul assumes that No-Face acts according to Dad’s orders, and he doesn’t get why Dad would give the command for No-Face to kill his own daughter. Yeon-joo says that Dad wouldn’t do that, and besides, he quit drawing for good.

As she talks, she accidentally slices the tip of her finger as she cuts the green onions, and the bodyguards overreact and run to fetch the nurse on Chul’s orders. Yeon-joo doesn’t see the need for that much medical attention, and Chul just smiles and tends to the cut.

He’s the first to realize that something is wrong, though, and he looks at her bleeding finger again in alarm. “Why are you bleeding? You’re not supposed to bleed…” he says, eyes wide. She looks down at her finger, and a new terror starts to dawn on Chul’s face: “This… means that you’ll die if you’re shot with a gun.” Craaaap.

As soon as he says it, Yeon-joo looks down at the corner of the screen, where the “To be continued” chyron is being written. She doesn’t even have a chance to say anything before she vanishes, and Chul slumps down, fraught with worry.

Yeon-joo appears back in her old bedroom in Dad’s house, her finger still bleeding. She bandages the wound and goes to read the latest issue of the webtoon, and sees for herself that No-Face threatened to put a bullet in her forehead, and that Chul imagined it happening. She tries calling Dad, but there’s no answer.

Back in Chul’s world, he paces back and forth wondering why the rules have changed—Dad and Yeon-joo were once invincible in his world, but now everything is different, and he has no idea why. He waits in the kitchen all night, but Yeon-joo doesn’t return.

So-hee calls him the next morning, drunk and crying. She wonders if Yeon-joo is sleeping next to him right now and asks if he really got married, because it hasn’t really hit her yet that this is real. She knows it’s her own fault for waiting around and thinking that it would lead to them being together in the end, but she cries that everyone else thought so too. Lol, an entire fandom, in fact.

So-hee: “What am I? What was I to you?” She swigs another glass of wine, when she suddenly notices her hand flickering in and out. Oh no, she’s disappearing! Chul recalls Do-yoon describing this the other night, and on the phone he overhears So-hee scream and drop her glass, when she looks in the mirror and sees her reflection flicker into a manhwa drawing.

Chul drives over to her, racking his brain the whole way, trying to make sense of what’s happening. He remembers opening the manhwa back in the real world and seeing the cast of main characters on the front page—Kang Chul, So-hee, Do-yoon, No-Face Killer, Assemblyman Han, and Ajusshi—all created for a purpose in the story.

In flashback, we see Ajusshi’s hand start to fade after Kang Chul told him that he was going to get rid of the crime show and stop chasing the killer. And in the present, So-hee’s entire body starts to look translucent. Chul realizes: “When that [character’s] purpose disappears, they cease to exist… in this world, forever?”

And then it occurs to him that the opposite will be true too: “When a character’s purpose becomes certain, they’re fixed as main characters… by force?” He’s thinking of Yeon-joo, of course, and back in her world, she’s come to more or less the same conclusion: “Have I become an actual manhwa character? Because I married the hero?” Really, are they having the same train of the thought at the exact same time? The exposition in this scene is so unnatural.

Chul wonders why No-Face didn’t disappear then, and that’s when he realizes that the killer could be like him—finding a purpose to exist on his own. “Did he become self-aware? Like me?” he wonders.

And to confirm it, we see No-Face walking around in Chul’s world after he’d stopped time and left through the portal. No-Face marched past the frozen people and leapt through the portal too, ending up on the same rooftop where Chul had first arrived in Yeon-joo’s world. Chul wonders in horror, “The culprit… is in the outside world?”

That’s exactly where he is, of course, and we see No-Face when he first arrived in the real world, when he’d bumped into a drunken man in the street. The really freaky part? Whenever No-Face talked, chyrons appeared on the screen, even in the real world. WTF. How? Why? Is this world even real?

No-Face asked where this was and where Kang Chul was, and then he’d come across a magazine in a store window, lamenting the end of Kang Chul’s manhwa without revealing the killer’s identity. No-Face crushed the window and grabbed the magazine, and Chul narrates that he was enraged: “Because the only one who desired to know the culprit’s identity more than me… was the culprit himself.”

No-Face stood on the bridge where Chul had jumped, and asked angrily how Kang Chul could die like this without finding him, when he waited ten years. I guess when you put it like that, yours was the saddest existence of all.

Chul narrates that No-Face was the one who stopped the manhwa from ending, because he couldn’t stand for it to end that way. The worst part is that now No-Face is stuck there where Yeon-joo is, not knowing how to get back to the manhwa world.

Yeon-joo worries that Chul is worrying about her, and she’s surprised when someone calls the workshop early in the morning. At first no one speaks, but then No-Face’s scary voice asks as the words appear before her, “You… came back? You’re Oh Sung-moo’s daughter, aren’t you? You’re Oh Yeon-joo, the woman who married Kang Chul, aren’t you?” Ack!

I don’t know why, but the image of No-Face using a cell phone like a real person just creeps me out. He’s standing in the publisher’s office as he makes the call from an assistant’s phone, and he memorizes Dad’s address before vanishing into thin air. More people arrive at the office, not realizing that the assistant has been strangled to death at her desk.

Thinking quickly, Yeon-joo grabs a drawing tablet and laptop and drags Su-bong out of bed. She has to yank his sleepy ass to the car and yell for him to just drive them away from the house, which he fiiinally does just in time for No-Face to appear in Dad’s workshop. Okay, I officially hate that he can teleport. How are you supposed to run away from that?

Su-bong sighs that he’s tired of things happening to them, and says he’d no longer be surprised by anything. Yeon-joo is still flailing and tells him not to answer any phone calls because the killer is looking for her, and the second she says it, they round the corner and see No-Face standing in their path.

She tries to tell Su-bong to reverse, but he doesn’t really register what’s happening until they’ve stopped just a few feet away. No-Face raises his gun, and Su-bong stammers, “That… that’s a g-gun. A gun. A gun. That’s a gun! NOONA, THAT’S A GUN!”

Yeon-joo screams at him to back up, so he puts the car in reverse and guns it… only to hit a lamppost and bring them to a full stop. The killer doesn’t even move, and just pulls the trigger.

The bullet travels in slow-motion, headed straight for Yeon-joo’s forehead. It flies through the windshield and comes right at her…

…But before it can make contact, Yeon-joo vanishes and the bullet pierces the seat’s headrest. Oh phew.

She reappears in the passenger seat of Chul’s car, and he’s so busy calling to see if Yeon-joo came home that he doesn’t notice she’s sitting next to him until she speaks. He asks if she’s okay, and in between gasping breaths, she says that No-Face just tried to kill her.

He kisses her on the forehead and pulls her into a hug, and once she’s calmed down a little, Yeon-joo worries about having left Su-bong back there with the killer.

Back in said car, Su-bong pleads for dear life, promising to live kindly if he’s spared. He’s so busy being terrified that he doesn’t notice No-Face coming closer and vanishing once he sees that Yeon-joo is gone. Well, at least he’s a killer with a singular purpose. How’s that for a silver lining?

Chul guesses as much and thinks that Su-bong will be okay, but Yeon-joo worries that the killer will seek her out at Mom’s house too. Back in her world, Su-bong flees from the car as soon as he sees that Yeon-joo has vanished, and he runs into her mother, who’s just arrived in the neighborhood to look for Yeon-joo. Su-bong gets in the car and begs her to drive them in the other direction, away from Dad’s.

No-Face returns to Dad’s workshop and finds a receipt for Dad’s flight to New Zealand. Yikes, he’s not going to teleport there, is he? On the flight, one of Dad’s fans approaches him for an autograph and asks about the sequel, but Dad doesn’t answer his questions.

Just before landing, Dad goes to the bathroom on the plane, where No-Face’s voice and matching chyrons suddenly appear, asking, “Who am I? Where is Kang Chul? Who am I? Why won’t you tell me who I am?” The villain is having an existential crisis?!

Dad reaches for the door handle, but then No-Face’s hand suddenly flashes into being and grabs Dad’s hand first. Dad looks over his shoulder in terror…

From outside, a flight attendant hears a violent scuffle inside the restroom, but no one answers when she knocks. The noise goes on for a while, and then everything goes silent, and the door clicks open. Ohmygod, did he take Dad?

In the manhwa world, Yeon-joo realizes that they’ve arrived outside So-hee’s apartment. Chul tries the door but there’s no answer and he doesn’t know her lock code. He asks if maybe Yeon-joo’s seen it in the manhwa, and Yeon-joo thinks back to a conversation where she and the other girls in Dad’s workshop teased Su-bong for being in love with So-hee. Um, is he trying to feed a paper cutout So-hee doll?

Su-bong had bragged about how he made her apartment number his birthday and her lock code his phone number, and voila—that code still works and gets them inside. Chul asks Yeon-joo to stay near the door and heads in by himself, where he finds the floor littered with glass shards and So-hee curled up and crying, looking almost completely translucent now.

So-hee asks what’s happening to her and cries that she’s dying, and Yeon-joo overhears her and puts two and two together, based on what she saw in the webtoon about Do-yoon seeing So-hee’s hands vanish.

Chul tries delicately to act like nothing is happening, and he says that she’s just had too much to drink and will be fine. That calms her down for a second, but when he takes her arm, she sees the wedding ring on his finger and starts to flicker again. She cries that she thought she’d marry him someday and asks again, “What am I?”

The more she asks that, the faster she vanishes, so Chul looks her in the eye and says that his marriage is all fake and it means nothing. Agh, I know you’re doing it to save So-hee, but that hurt.

Chul assures her that it’s not a real marriage and says, “You’re important to me. You’re the person closest to me. I need you for the rest of my life.” So-hee asks in a small voice, “You need me?” And with that, she becomes solid again.

Chul wipes her tears and hugs her, and promises that after she gets some sleep, everything will be fine. Then he looks over at Yeon-joo, who’s been standing there the whole time.

While So-hee sleeps, Yeon-joo patches up her scrapes, and Chul thinks back to a mundane memory of being in high school and telling So-hee that he was going to switch majors, and bragging about how he was a genius so he’d be good at anything. Aw, they were so cute.

Yeon-joo says that she’d forgotten for a moment that So-hee was the heroine of this manhwa: “This is because of me, isn’t it?” Chul replies honestly, “It’s because of the wretched fate your father created. The character’s predetermined setup, her reason for existing. It’s cruel, isn’t it? How can there be only one reason you were born and exist? We’re people too.”

Yeon-joo cries on the way back, murmuring aloud that it’s all a mess, and this isn’t the sequel she wanted at all. Chul sees her crying and decides to write a letter to Yeon-joo’s father, which he starts typing into his phone.

As they ride the elevator up to his suite, Chul notices Yeon-joo’s untied shoelace and bends down to retie it, remembering that it was one of the romantic things in their book. She asks if now is really the time to do their homework, and he takes her hand and decides to go up to the roof.

Yeon-joo remembers meeting here for the first time, and she flips her hair and calls him lucky for having met such a good doctor in his time of need. He agrees that he was lucky, and then he withdraws his hand before asking her to draw something for him when she returns to her world.

He asks her to draw him waking up from a dream—to make it so that everything from meeting her on the roof that night until now is all one long dream. What, no! He says that it’s the only solution he can think of—to return to the time before he ever thought of Yeon-joo as the key to his life, to before he discovered that he was a manhwa character, before the killer followed him out into the real world, and his friends started disappearing.

The most important thing, Chul says, is that Yeon-joo can’t die, because he can’t bear to witness that. He says that if they can return to before he knew her, then he won’t think of her and keep pulling her back into this world. But! She’ll remember you! That’s so cruel!

Chul says that he didn’t know how to go on living before, but now he knows: “I should just live according to my fate, and if my reason for existing is to forever chase a culprit that can never be caught, then I have to do that.” Noooo!

He asks what Yeon-joo thinks, and whether she understands him. She nods slowly and finally lifts her head, her eyes brimming with tears. He asks her to draw him waking up from the dream and not remembering any of it, and hands her a flash drive with his letter to her father on it.

He makes her promise to draw it right away, because they don’t know when No-Face will appear again. She promises in a shaky voice, and Chul begins to step away from her, saying that the one thing he regrets is that they only got to do four of the things on her sweet romance list, when he had at least a hundred things he wanted to do for her.

He steps farther and farther away while saying, “I want to hold you one more time, but I can’t do that either, because I’ll be reluctant to let go.” She asks where he’s going, and he gets to the edge of the roof and says they don’t have time and this is the only way to make sure she returns home.

He tells her, “Forget me now. I’m just a character in a manhwa. If you miss me, you can go to the bookstore and see me there. Be well.” He gives her a tiny smile, and then leans back, letting himself just fall off the ledge. Yeon-joo gasps, and then we fade to black.

Tears spill down Kang Chul’s face as he wakes up in the hospital, all the way back to the morning after his stabbing attack. So-hee comes in to say that she hasn’t found anything in the CCTV footage, and asks if he cried.

Chul wipes his eyes and looks curiously at the tears on his fingers, and says it feels like he dreamt something, but can’t remember what.

And back in her world, Yeon-joo sits in the passenger seat of Su-bong’s car, still with the bullet hole in the windshield, hurriedly drawing the webtoon just like Chul asked. She finishes the frame she needs to in order to make it all a dream, and then bursts into tears when she looks down at the wedding ring on her finger.

Chul looks down at his own hand curiously, having forgotten Yeon-joo entirely.

COMMENTS

Excuse me while I go dig myself a dark hole to go cry in for the next twelve hours. I can’t believe we just reset Kang Chul’s whole world back to zero. He’ll never know that he loved her! And she has to carry all their happy memories all by herself! You guys, when they did this to Buffy and Angel, I cried for DAYS. Is this writer trying to kill me with my own emotions? Because it seems like that’s what she’s trying to do. She’s clearly also trying to break my brain, because now we’re adding a new time element to the story, where we’ve gone back in Kang Chul’s timeline but forward in Yeon-joo’s, and we have absolutely no idea what the rules are for messing with time in the manhwa world. Is it like amnesia? Could something trigger a past-future memory? And what’s to keep Kang Chul from doing the same thing all over again, if it’s already in his nature to ask all those questions and become self-aware?

Now I see why it felt like we’d zoomed through an entire drama in the first six episodes, and Episodes 7 and 8 turned out to be an interlude in fantasyland—because now we’re starting all over again. Though to what end is anybody’s guess. I feel like we’re embarking on a behavioral experiment, to see if our characters will make the same choices all over again. And if so, is that predetermination, or free will? Because if Kang Chul is in danger, will Yeon-joo really be able to stop herself from saving him? And if she already saved him on the roof, what’s to keep him from looking for her and writing her character into the manhwa like last time?

This is such a cruel story turn for Yeon-joo, but I don’t mind the romantic angst that we get in return, because this is the type of amnesia arc that I actually like, where you get to anticipate the characters falling in love a second time. And it can be sweet rather than angsty, a la I Hear Your Voice, so that makes me feel slightly better about Yeon-joo having to be the only one who knows how good they could’ve had it. Slightly. And plotwise, there’s even more at stake because we don’t know what the ripple effect will be if Kang Chul does fall in love with her again and suddenly remembers things from the first timeline. Bah, are we going to have to make parallel timeline charts? I didn’t really anticipate homework. Time-bending really does a number on me.

It’s time for Dad to get involved, that’s for sure, though I don’t know if he has much choice in the matter after No-Face kidnapped him. But can he undo the damage that ten years of lazy writing and bad character motivation has done? I guess that’s what retconning is for. I’m amused that even the killer is having an existential crisis, because it makes him seem more human and relatable, despite not having a face. Though that still doesn’t explain why the hell he gets speech bubbles even in the real world. There are a lot of reasons to suspect that Yeon-joo’s world isn’t even the real world, but that one is extra fishy if you ask me. Also, how come the rules change in every episode?! How’s a watcher supposed to know what danger lurks around the next act break with the rules always shifting like sand? It’s stressful!

It’s an interesting conundrum to wish that fate would prevail and draw Kang Chul and Yeon-joo back to each other, while also hoping that they can rise above their predetermined fates. When Kang Chul just gave up his free will in order to save everyone around him, it was crushing—more than him giving up his love—because he’d come to understand how utterly pointless his entire existence was, and yet was willing to just go back to that endless hamster wheel knowingly. Part of it felt like the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect the people he loves, and part of it felt like defeat, because he’d seen the outer limits of his world and how much damage going outside your predetermined path could do. I just wish he’d been more sympathetic to the fact that Yeon-joo now has to return to her normal life being the only one to remember their love. Okay, so Su-bong might remember. What would we do without you, Su-bong?!

I accidentally replied here that was supposed to be to the top post. Anyway, I watched this raw -- RAW, for crying out loud but I was brawling during the rooftop episode even though I don't understand a single word they uttered.

The story may not end up like Winnie The Pooh with Yeon Joo eventually outgrowing the web toon world and Kang Chul like Christopher Robin and Winnie. They're their because of her, but not FOR her. Kang Chul has a mind of his own, and free will and he's self aware. I think he'll be like the Velveteen Rabbit, love will make him real. In the end they'll be together.

Or maybe SHE'S Winnie the Pooh, and HIS world is Christopher Robin. So sad any way you slice it.

Omg...you made me sad all over again remembering Winnie the Pooh's ending!

You may have a good hunch here because who knows how this drama will end. T.T

It's messed up. The whole reset thing. I can't even come up with any hypothesis anymore. Because every time I think about a theory, all these new rules of the comic book dimension come to play and it's all speculative. Actually I think it would have been 10x better if they aired this episode and last weeks episode together like it was suppose to be aired, because right now all these events seem so displaced but if we watched it right after episode 7 there was a lot of build up and this new time reversal plot wouldn't have been so out of left field. They should have just aired both eps this week!!!

Just chipping in my two cents to say how So Hee is getting on my last two nerves. I don't know if it's the actress but I just find her so obnoxious, when were actually suppose to be feeling sympathy for her but every time she's on the screen I just have to roll my eyes and wait for the scene to be over. It's going to become a serious deferent to watching the show if she starts appearing in it more frequently now that she's regained her role as the female lead.. Ugh.

So it wasn't just me that was not impressed with the actress playing Sohee performance. It took me a while to figure out whether the character was being sincere or not when she cried because I could not read any true emotion on her face. :S Hopefully crying scenes are her weakness and she'll improve in the upcoming episodes.

Honestly, I am not a fan of her character either. However, I do like how she is a play on the typical second-lead whose entire existence rest on her being a mere plot-device. W's writer seems to be poking fun at the various elements of lazy writing.

Totally agree that the writers are using the manwha world to mock lazy writing. And I'm loving the tongue-in-cheek fun.

It's particularly obvious with the killer. He's a frighteningly bad character, precisely because he's a bad (poorly conceived) character. Without context and a better concept he's near unstoppable and irredeemable. But, hopefully, dad to the rescue with a rewrite? Can't wait to see how they resolve this.

I would totally like to see a drama where a second lead is aware that she is just a plot device and has no chance with her world's main lead that she enters another world where she becomes the main character. That would be a great concept for a drama.

I am so glad I am not alone in this. For me it's both the actress and the character. I haven't like her one bit since she setup YJ to go to prison and disregards KC's order as her boss, regardless what sensible explanation there is.

I'm giving her some slack since she plays Bong Pal's mother in Bring It On Ghost. It's a small part, but if she raised Bong Pal, she can't be so bad! Lol

Eh? The actress that plays SH is not the same actress who is Bongpal's mother. Bongpal's mom is older and a different actress.

Sorry to interrupt but i cant help but say that SoHee is the least frustrating of all the second leads i have seen so far ( i will eat my words if she becomes the typical one in future). Unlike many, I have rarely have had second lead syndrome ( except for SKS's Moon Jae Shin).

But here, I would defend SH for all her actions so far. She tricked YJ into revealing her identity to protect KC because she saw YJ as a threat to KC's life not her love. Moreover she has so far held herself in a respectable manner and have never went out of limits. She waited patiently for KC but ended up losing him. Well, here too i dont have a second lead syndrome, I for sure ship KC-YJ couple, but i meant to say SH doesn't deserve hate from us so far.

That said, its unfortunate that the actor who plays SH puts forth a very bad performance especially in the crying scenes.

I was cringing through that drunk phone call - I liked the actress well enough in Grapevine (her debut) but it turns out she plays all her roles the exact same way. And that drunk crying gave me serious secondhand embarrassment because her acting was so bad.

I can feel some sympathy for her as a suddenly redundant plot device. But the acting doesn't help you to care for her at all.

It feels so good to not be the only one feeling this way! I had zero sympathy for her here and almost wished she'd just disappeared. Why did I feel that way? Because the crying scene looked so fake, who cries that way! I'm not buying the character this actress is trying to sell. It never felt like her role was important to me plotwise and the actress is not doing a good job in my opinion.

She was okay in Moorim High School, but now I'm beginning to wonder if that was just because the other leads in that show were equally as bad and cringey so her acting never stood out. But here she really sticks out like a sore thumb and I literally can't stand her in some scenes, I hope her role gets cut down now that we're going in essentially season 2 of W.

She was absolutely fine in Grapevine, probably because her role was minor and it was tailored to her style of acting. But the problem is that she basically HAS only one mode of line delivery, and the minute the script needs anything else (like the 'crying' scene), her limitations are exposed.

I mean, Han Hyo-joo's not a genius actress either, and I find her general vibe often too placid for my taste, but she pulls her weight and I can actually go along for the ride with Yeon-joo/can anticipate seeing her interact with other characters. That's not the case for So-hee.

What if it's 3 worlds?

The manwha with Kang Chul + Yeon Joon's reality makeup W, then the real manwha is what our narrators have been reading from? Imagine the craziest bedtime story of choice!

Because each series starts with a narration, so it's not far fetched to think that they're reading off of something tangible like a comic book.

If this is how it is, then it's really so messed up...

but to add to @apple's comment and GF's suspicions, I too think that there are THREE worlds in this drama, Yeon Joo's world, Kang Chul's world and the real, "reel" world. So to say. Maybe Yeon Joo is the star of a tv drama about a manhwa writer; maybe that's why the villain's words are showing as chyron in her world???? Maybe there is some behind-the-scenes drama in the Yeon Joo drama world where one writer wants to end the show and another writer wants to continue it..... maybe it's a fight over genres: romance vs thriller! Who knows!!! Am so looking forward to the next episode!

Episode 8 -- yeah, all of that happened. Yes, it did.
I've never dropped so many f-bombs while watching a show on television.

I could go on forever reacting to this episode. This is the best I can do for now.

1. No face has upped his status from villain to super villain. How can this thing have teleporting skills??

2. How many failed suicide attempts does it take one Kang Chul to screw a lightbulb?

3. The W manwha just turned into Survivor. Seems like So Hee avoided elimination and has lived to see another day. (It wasn't the best time for OYJ's wake up call but damn, it happened.)

4. The real cliffhanger for this episode is, WTF just happened to OSM??? And I'm serious about dropping the WTF in this sentence...

5. Dream sequence trope -- kdramaland law Chapter 28 states: dream sequences are usually 20-30 second clips of fantasies from a hero/heroines point of view. In W's perspective, dream sequences are epiphanies of doom.

6. Chapter 29: How to avoid getting shot: teleport to a parallel universe. 29.1: how to avoid drowning: teleport to a parallel universe.

7. Chapter 30: how to avoid answering the call of death, never answer a call from an unregistered or unidentifiable number. "Hello, Sydney."

8. Variables and Contexts are logic and reasoning in its true essence and form.

Damn that must have hurt like hell for OYJ to hear Kang Chul drop those words, "You know its a fake marriage. There is nothing going on vetween us."
That's like the worst wake up call ever. It's not even enlightening. It's heart wrenching.

So today's lesson is: you can't mess with destiny even if it's in a manwha.

Plus... I think it wasn't a selfish act for Kang Chul to just pull the plug and reset everything back to zero. He had the very best intentions and this guy is driven by logic and purpose. It wasn't the best plan at all, but it was something that had to be done since he knew time and fate weren't things to be messed with.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, not selfish at all. It's the best way and he doesn't have a lot of option (actually no other option imo). My favorite scene in this episode was when Chul visited Sohee (and the scenes with Sohee panicking). The look on his face seeing her "disappearing" is a look one would have when seeing a terribly wounded person (even a dying one as how Sohee puts it). And in the manhwa world, this is the closest to being fatally wounded or dying. In some ways, I find this to be more cruel. There's something extremely sorrowful with the fact that when you no longer serve a purpose (to the main character), you just disappear without really understanding what you have done to have such fate. And you will be wiped out never knowing how and why. That scene broke my heart.

And when KC said that the marriage is just fake... OUCH especially with YJ there. I know he said it to make her feel better, but I also don't doubt his words when he said she's important to him. She is his closest friend. He just can't give the kind of love she seeks.

I know SH makes me very sad!

This drama makes me think about fictional characters in a very different way.

What happened to all the characters in stories I fell in love with in past 20 years? All the books, shows, comics, cartoons - I have forgotten many of their names, have they disappeared?

How sad it is to have characters single sole purpose? How can they disappear when story ends? They lived in millions of people's head. We can say they might keep living in a way.

I keep thinking about Bing Bong from Inside out. I cried like a baby when he decides to fade into oblivion. How many Bing Bongs have I forgotten? How many Bing Bong's sole purpose was just to make me feel better?

Like everyone I have always wanted my fictional characters to come alive. But now, I feel I am selfish. How sad of a existence would it be !

Might be a funny comparison, but imagine if Road Runner cartoon was real?
The wolf forever destined to fail and the roadrunner forever destined to run!

I know I have already prayed to dramagods for happy ending in this drama but can I just ask one more thing please??

Give SH another purpose! Let her have her own lifeeee !
Preferably her coming to real world and falling in love with Su Bong??

So many feels!

I was just talking about a story I read as an early teen. I don't even remember her age or the catalyst that made he spend the summer with her mom. So many favorite characters who were friends when I needed them. But just when I needed them *tears*

I love that you've coined them Bing Bongs. It could be fictional characters on multiple media sources. It could be actual imaginary friends. It could be the stranger who compliments you on the street. We often interact with people who are not prominent in our lives. We are not characters to disappear Bing Bong/So Hee style. We continue our lives, just not playing a role in theirs.

Personally I ship Do Yoon/So Hee. But that's kinda shipping the spares even though there is no second male lead. Soo Bong/So Hee could be fun, especially with that glimpse of character we saw in the flashback. She'd totally put him in a headlock.

Sorry to pair the spares, but Do Yoon needs love. So DY and one of the assistants? If I recall correctly the non blonde one is funny. Or a noona romance, OYJ's imo doesn't seem to be married. Or the nurse. Or the lady from the fashion store. Or a maid. I'm not in control of him, on e he gains free will he can do what he wants, but the options are endless.

0

Am I the only one that's getting REALLY annoyed with Yeon So Hee ? Like tremendously annoyed. She has all the staple characteristics of typical second lead fiddle to the main hero, but it's just that here she has a solid alibi for acting out the way she does, so you can't logically hate on her since not being with the main character defies her existence. But I still hate her!! And she's the ONLY character in rh show that I find annoying to no end, like I can't deal with her scenes. Maybe it's the actress ? I don't know, maybe it's just me.. But she's getting really obnoxious even though she has reason to be and were suppose to be feeling sympathy for her..

0

@ughjustcant

So Hee can't cry for reals...it felt forced..maybe its just the actress, but I feel ya.

0

"What happened to all the characters in stories I fell in love with in past 20 years? All the books, shows, comics, cartoons – I have forgotten many of their names, have they disappeared?"

Flip it the other way around. What makes us think they're not still there, living in their own world? If we can't observe or find out what happens to them anymore, do they cease to exist? Who defines existence, anyway?

I always thought that when the book ends or the credits roll, I they move on with their lives, and we're the ones who are left out. Not the other way around.

(Back to W, it's a cool concept that the characters are fading when they stop serving their purpose. And it gives me feeelsss while watching. But it doesn't make me sad about all the other books or shows that I've finished because like I said, I think it's the other way around.)

0

That's so true!! I read a lot to help work through my problems (there's just something about reading a hero overcome their tragedies that's cathartic and makes you think: I can do this!), and it's terrible to think what I've done to those characters if they were real. Better not to think about it. But that makes me feel selfish for closing my eyes! Arrrgh what have you done to me, show??

As for So-hee and Su-bong, I dunno... he seemed a bit obsessed, trying to feed that cardboard cutout. Better have him and Do-yoon fight for her... except that I still don't like her very much! Oh dear.

0

Okay, so many I should clarify about where my comments are headed, since we've reached the last indentations. The one above is @Divyrus, although @Purple Owl I had you in mind to. ^^

And @mary, thank you! I hadn't read your comment yet, and that's a good point. And a comforting one (and I'm worried about fictional characters with no context. What even is my life?). In the past I've imagined a mix of the two (...and they continue adventuring happily ever after). Which made me wonder like YJ if they really did. But I like your version better.

0

@Cozybooks, it's happy for them, but sad for us! LOL

We're like Yeon-joo in a way. The characters we meet are all cool people living adventurous lives. We get a glimpse of their life and share in their pain and happiness. And then they move on and we're left with all the memories and no way to check on them anymore.

This is why Peter Pan made me so sad...

0

@mary prefer to think they continue living their lives. I havw a masochistic love for non endings.

@Cozybooks Soo Bong is obsessed but that's what makes it fun, teehee. Lee Shi Un would act that out perfectly. A fight would be nice to. Especially given how she's feeling at the moment.

0

@Purple Owl, judging by how much Su-bong flails in dire situations, he probably fights like Jung-do in Police Unit 38...

0

The characters in finished book/series/movies/etc don't die or disappear. They continue to live on in people's imagination. How many times did I try to imagine the future life of the hero of a book? I can't even count! And now there are even people writing fanfiction to make their lives continue. So they don't die. In my opinion if a painter, a writer can be immortal through their paintings and books, then a character is immortal through our imagination and dreams.

0

Okay I had a busy day and I swear I had good replies for all your comments ! Detailed analysis on fictional characters we obsess on, I also had examples.

BUT, I ended up watching the next episode - and now am not even sane or alive. Its just random WTF and OMG!

0

I agree. You could almost call this noble idiocy, but it's smart and it keeps everyone safe. Chul loses his free will too (for now) and while it sucks that he's not addressing how much this will hurt Yeon Joo, he's losing out too.

I love the way the writer is taking all of these drama tropes that people hate and twisting them into something new. It's so smart.

people keep saying he's not thinking of YJ's feelings but like she was almost killed that same day? and she was freaking out about it next to him in the car seconds later? when he tells her he's just a webtoon character and to forget him. he's not just saying that for her benefit but because he legit believes it and that her life is not worth being risked cuz of him. and he's not ready to watch yet ANOTHER person he loves die on him, for essentially no reason what so ever. he isnt just trying to save his world but YJ's life. He even said that the thing most important is that she cannot die.

This isnt a case of sticking thru the hardships no matter what, cuz had he done nothing, they'd be stuck together in a world collapsing in on itself with the threat of YJ being murdered hanging over them every single day. It was legit the ONLY thing he or anyone else could do at this point. and that's why YJ did as she was asked. She knows it too. but it still hurts ofc. It hurts cuz she loses the man she loves and he loses her and his free will in the process. He's essentially condemning himself to a glorified purgatory really. and i wouldnt be surprised if that's part of why she was so heartbroken. Anyway, he believes that YJ can and will go on with her life just fine without him because he's not "real" but even as smart as he is, he underestimates YJ's love for him and her resourcefulness (plus he still doesnt know she technically created him).

I completely agree with you. We can speculate all we want but the facts now are quite simple: she is a real person, he is a webtoon character. That's an impossible love story to begin with. Chul definitely knew ahead of time that at some point he would need to let Yeon Joo go (that's the feeling I had in the past episodes). I didn't expect the suicide plot but making him think it was a dream seems like a nice way to put everything back to it's place. If you think of it, Yeon Joo and Chul messed the webtoon world big time. I can't help but think of time travelling dramas (such as Nine) in which slightly changing a tiny thing in the past can produce big changes in the present (again thinking about Nine)

0

I think there's a few things that makes this situation a rare example of noble idiocy being done RIGHT.

This decision--to turn back time and erase Chul's memory--is something that Chul and Yeon-Joo decide together, rather than having a single person decide unilaterally, "Well, this is what's gonna happen, and there's nothing you can do about it." (Note that Yeon-Joo agreed to do what Chul suggested BEFORE he threatened to commit suicide, meaning that decision wasn't unilateral.)

On a similar note, this is a situation where both individuals have to sacrifice something important to them in order to keep other safe, rather than having one character sacrifice a lot and the other character be relatively unscathed.

Additionally, the threat that Chul and Yeon-Joo is obvious to us, the audience--it's not something vague and intangible that really isn't worth being a noble idiot over.

And, perhaps most importantly, there's no other option for Chul and Yeon-Joo, who were being backed into a corner by an unstoppable, unkillable man who can appear and disappear at will. In other shows, the noble idiot picks the stupidest option out of sea of other things they could've done instead; in this situation, Chul and Yeon-Joo are clearly doing the best that they can do in a terrible, impossible situation.

Yeah, I agree. But I really like how she handled it--she didn't break down right there, she didn't shut herself off from KC. No, she stayed in control of herself and even took care of So-hee's injuries while they figured things out. And I love that she still accepted Chul really loved her--she didn't seem to doubt the sincerity of his feelings for her. That makes it doubly heartbreaking when they split on the rooftop.

Yeah tbh I dont thinks he was hurt by him saying those things to Sohee at all. She knows why he did it, and that it was the compassionate thing for him to do.
She was hurt cuz of all the drama and pain that's happened since she appeared in KC's world. She's got a good heart so watching sohee crying on the floor, bleeding, and thinking she's DYING. well she was obv more sad for SH at that point than herself.
Plus ultimately the magic words werent "I dont love YJ I love you" but "I need you". important distinction! (im agreeing with u but in a long winded way haha)

He's never dropped the L-word. Remember, he had to "study" about sweet romance.

Come to think of it, if his romance of choice was #4, that could've been a default setting made by OSM, hahahaha, that's hilarious, didn't think OSM was a closeted perv.

0

@Yoyo

Unfortunately I think that #4 being Chul's favorite doesn't come from OSM but from society that somehow consider men as having more sexual desires than women.

0

@Yoyo

i always thought he just said it to mess with her haha. cuz he knows it would fluster her and that makes him smile. plus technically he doesnt know about romance at all, he's a hero in a crime/thriller afterall. (sex without romance is possible ofc, just as romance without sex is also possible)

0

I love how that scene between the three of them played out, especially how YJ handled everything up until KC jumped.

Conclusion: the one to be blamed is Dad and his writing. hahaha!

0

I don't think it was selfish either. Also, Kang Chul doesn't totally understand the rules, but he does understand some things.
For example, if Kang Chul doesn't live out his purpose, whatever it might be, will he disappear? If he doesn't follow the script, not only does the only world he knows disappear, he doesn't know what happens to himself, exactly.
To him, his world is still alive. Though created, he believes in the humanity of his world.

After Episode 7, I am absolutely looking forward to a very long honeymoon sequel to the first episodes despite the threat in Yeo-joo's life.. only to be cut short here in Episode 8. It's not even surprising that Kang Chul made that choice since he really is driven by logic and justice and living his life with Yeo-joo meant suffering for other characters (i.e. So Hee), I already expected this turn of events.

BUT it is still heartbreaking for Yeo-joo to actually do the act of making Kang Chul forget everything as if it was a dream and make herself suffer alone by keeping all those memories. Now that Yeo-joo's back to the real world, what will happen to both of them? How will she return to the manhwa world if Kang Chul can't remember her?

Also, what will happen to the Killer when he's actually wreaking havoc in the real world? I just hope he doesn't go on killing just anybody.

This episode had me up then threw me at the bottom. I braced myself for the things to come and yet no preparation is enough for my heart.

Kang Chul has never been an emotional person. He's smart and logical. It didn't surprise me that he figured things out on his own --- I wouldn't say that what he thought of and narrated to us was the right thing(s) but it made sense -- logically and sensibly.

He gets to be more emotional when he's with OYJ and that completes his humanism. So him having to decide to reset everything back was the best possible choice he could make that moment.

I do not think Dad was killed. As simple as the killer is, he wants to find out who he is (and kill Kang Chul) more than anything; and he needs Dad for that.
My guess is that Dad was just badly scared this time :) . Moreover, Kang Chul has left him a message and I think he will ask Dad to write a consistent story so everyone can find their purpose in the webtoon and things can get a closure. This way, everyone can be safe. I see Dad playing an important role in what is to come...but I do not know how this fits with the love line :P ...because there has to be a love line: the reunion of these two after Kang Chul remembers will be epic :D

I SWORE, I HAD NEVER HAD SO MANY MINDBLOWNS IN JUST ONE EPISODE. ((esp on the ep 9 preview, it was just so hard to decipher))

1. where did OSM go?

2. WHO THE HECK IS THE KILLER? y u do dis?

3. its the worst case senario of amnesia i had ever watched in kdramas, gAAAHD

with regards to ep 9 preview:

1. HOW COULD U JUST FORGET ABOUT OYJ, KANG CHUL??!!! how? huhuhuhuh i cannot stress about this anymore

2. what do the narrator mean by knowing the 'acceptable killer' for kang chul, by the same time he held into OYJ's hands?? its beyond confusing, is the narrator pertaining to HER? oh nO U DONT, u cant

Personally, I don't watch the previews because the clips they show are enough to give me a synopsis of what will happen next. And I do like the anticipation, it makes me appreciate this drama more.

I do watch previews (curse my self-spoiling heart), but this week's as was really good--gave me all of the anticipation and none of the spoiler information. I have zero clue where the writer is taking us now. Zero clues. I'm considering stopping with the previews, though, just in case. (who am I kidding? I'd never last the week-wait without them :P )

i love previews, but usually cuz we get a week between them and they usually contain previews from both eps of that week not just the one. but since MBC f'd up the airing order...-_- who knows how that'll go. not to mention how intentionally misleading they can be!
I think with the reset, it gives OSM the chance to brainstorm with his daughter about how to give the killer an identity that KC can accept so the story can finally move forward and conclude without further chaos being unleashed. (osm seems to have been really affected by his confrontation with KC. he seems to have mellowed out a bit and become less bitter/mean...hmm). Also i rly wanna know what KC wrote to OSM, why and how he expects OSM to see it.

I watch the previews! But the recappers don't. That's why preview discussion is considered spoiler. But so many people talking about it here... :'( It's a nightmare trying to save those who didn't watch from those who wanna talk about it. T____T

I tried not watching previews but I can't. It kind of helps to get through a week of waiting after the 2nd ep each week. Also, I have no idea what's happening in the preview anyway. hahaha!

I'm part of the preview-watching camp too ^___^ Just trying to restrain myself for those who don't watch previews.

You made my day!

1. I was so surprised and envious of faceless killer teleportation with an integrated GPS skills! The guy knew where to find everything! And he managed to teleport himself in a freaking moving plane

4. I so agree with you. Right now the only thing that I'm wondering is whether making the whole thing a dream to Chul has an impact on what actually happened in the real world. Is OSM dead? Is the killer still in the real world? Since everything is now a dream has the killer actually shot Yeon Joo?

Actually, I don’t think this is time resetting, not to mention amnesia.

I call it reality resetting. As we often see in comic books, there are events shown in a sequence of panels that we thought were real and really happened, turn out to be one character’s imagination or illusion or, as in this case, a dream, usually with half a bubble drawn under the lower edge of a panel to indicate to the reader that this sequence of panels above it is not reality.

KC’s own imagination of YJ being shot and YJ’s party dream are both examples of this method. Especially with the latter, they completely had me there. I thought that was real. These two perfectly foreshadowed the turn of plot at the end of Episode 8.

THAT has nothing to do with time exactly, but everything to do with logic of the narrative. It obsoletes the reality and resets what is real.

Then it leads me to another question I can’t help asking: what is the reality in the comic world. When KC woke up from his dream, all readers of comic book W would conclude: the psycho arc is just a dream hooray. However, for us drama viewers, we know those things actually happened( or did they? ) It seems that the reality in this manhwa world entirely relies on observation and understanding by the 3D real world audience.

Just a bit like a thought I enterntain from time to time:the world might not exist after I die or before I was born, since I would not be there to observe it.

I've had that thought too. Did the American Revolution really happen or was that just for forming the scope of the world? What if the world existed before me but not very long?

What if the last 100, 200, 400 years and so on is all that ever was. The world has been tell in in its history to make it what we know today, but did any of those things happen?

What if we've only existed 200 years?

Otherwise this show is perfect for a theory I have.

Theory:
The closer you are to a person the higher your chances of predicting a day in their life. If someone isn't around me, what is their day like? Work? Coworkers? Family? Friends? Kang Chul is the MC and if the other characters aren't talking about him or doing a purpose around him, their time is on fast forward.

For people we don't know as well, that's how predicting would go. Some family friend who we know works Sun-Thurs at such and such job. But we don't know much about their friends. We don't know much about their family. And even less about their coworkers. If we think about them during the day, we can't guess with any conviction what they are doing in that moment.

But maybe we could for our sibling or close friend. We know a good amount of what fills their day. To us, everyone's time is simply fast forwarding until we see each other again, but especially people we are not as close to. And we ask about the time in between.

Sorry. I have a lot of strange thoughts that I can't voice properly. I can barely write it clearly. I don't know if anyone outside of book characters have these thoughts in their head, kekeke

Required fields are marked *

It's an interesting thought, though--and I get what you mean. And it does have its parallels in real life--we only ask about the parts of their day we're curious about, where we don't know what happened. Here's another thought:

Have you ever heard of point of reference as a it relates to existence? It makes Harry Potter as real as your mom.

When you're not with your mom, how do you know she exists? You have memories of her, experiences with her, you remember what she looks like and sounds like. If you talk to another person who knows her, they reconfirm that she exists.
Now take Harry Potter. He doesn't exist, but you have memories with him, experiences with him, you know what he looks like and sounds like. If you talk to someone who knows him, they reconfirm that he exists.

This is because when you mention someone's name, there's a mutual point of reference that ought to indicate what you're talking about. If there's no mutual recognition, who's to say it exists except in your mind like HP? And since there's (probably) more people who know HP than your mom (or mine), that means HP is more real--at least when you're not with her. Crazy, huh?

@Cozybooks- if I had a brain left that would have blown it away.

@PurpleOwl - going by how long the world existed would mean that nothing was around before I was born? But I have plumbing! I know there are people who really do believe that the world is not very old but I believe in science. It's an interesting concept though.

I like your theory though and it is really applicable to real (? our) life. (Sorry having an existential crisis)

Going off on a tangent: interesting to know that the W manwha is still "writing itself" in YJ's world (I'm too paranoid to call it the "real world" anymore).

Slightly inconvenient for YJ and KC that when they're in the manhwa world, they can't read the cartoon and get the bigger picture. Kinda like how when you're talking in your sleep, you can't hear what you're saying. The manwha allows them to know each other's feelings and situation - but usually they can only read it when they're apart.

Actually, Crazy Dog is one of my main reasons for thinking YJ's world may not be the "real" world! He's so extra!

It would be so typically meta for the cartoon character to go around flipping out about his favourite manhwa, when he's actually a manwha character himself!!

Seriously, I can't wait to see if there's anything to that (their world being "real" or not). My two theories right now are:

1. their world isn't real either (it's a drama) and it'll end with that realization (heartbreaking!)
and
2. Their worlds are colliding, merging as Yeon-joo and Kang Chul bring them together.

I am slightly biased towards the idea of worlds colliding between "real" and manhwa because I would love to see how that will translate on screen. I bet it'll be beautiful and goosebumps-inducing judging from how magnificently cinematography has been delivered in this drama so far.

Yeah i agree its nothing to do with going back in time or amnesia either. in W itself, these arent memories he forgot, but things that never even happened to begin with. they are a "dream".
But since W is a comic, that means the readers (we viewers too) know what occurred but he and his world does NOT. its dramatic irony at its finest even tho the trope used here is one of the laziest most obnoxious tropes a writer can use. The "it was all a dream" trope. To essentially undue, chapters (or episodes) worth of character progression, emotion and etc because the writers dont want to deal with the consequences anymore/and or wrote themselves into a corner. so instead of trying to be more creative, they jsut write themselves a quick handy fixit. ofc in this case its totally understandable.
In other words...what's happening is a total retcon, a re-do. They are going back to the very beginning, because it's a very good place to start. lol

"When you read you begin with A, B, C (for Chul)." Hah, I'll be humming that all day.

What I love about W is how she's taking all of the laziest writing tricks and making them valid plot points. Tragic backstory without a resolution? Got it. Villain that hates our hero "because he's written that way"? Got it. Everything was secretly a dream? Got it--and it's all on purpose! In an earlier episode thread someone talked about how it's like the writer's rage quitting at all lazy writers, and they were totally right.

I'm confused...

Is the time reset (like many have stated)? Or is it a reality resetting like @Cipher (comment#4) explained?

If it's a time reset, then not only our characters can go back and forth between worlds/environments, but some (not all) can go back in time.

If it's a story/reality resetting, then we're technically not back in time... Or are we? My brain can't think anymore!

Omg! Is this what's going to happen now, like Kang Chul and Yeon Joo literally have time and space as well as a parallel reality standing between them now, so every time one of them is hurt or in dangers are we going to go back into the past and redo everything all over again???

I can't say that I'm complaining, I always like the beginning awkward stages of the romance where the characters aren't really sure what to do with themselves, and plus now we just get to see them fall in love over again. And I love me some angst!! Bring on the angst!

Stupid end of the night chores.
I have to go after reading the opening paragraph. GF, you're hilarious. I was all prepared to be logical and then drama!

At least it made my afternoon chores easier. And I've heard some time to recuperate. My thoughts so far:

Fashion continues to be on point.
I loved the bodyguards laughing at OYJ while she danced.
Love their Blue House wear.
The state dinner was invited for her wasn't it?
I feel bad for the killer. Wow, this drama is awesome to make me feel that way.
I think the food appears when she looks for it because the story is now being draw around her.
The TBC startled me.
I love how he just dismisses the bodyguards.
She can read the manhwa to see his thoughts, and his imagine that she died. Can he read it to see her dream?
Can we give So Hui actress a hand *no pun intended* for her amazing acting? How did she do the dissaptiting scene and make it so convincing?
And oh, no ahjussi!
We were right! No-Face used the same portal.
Omo, no words.....
As a Viki commentor said 'new phone who dis?"
OYJ can die in both worlds. No-Face just wants an identity. Did he kill that girl to call? Did he wonder around for a month before he found out about Chul? Or before he was able to do anything about it?
I have serious chills.
OYJ going from W to Yeolworld to W was insane.
Still loving Soo Bong
Ok, so I know that So Hui has one purpose but like can Chul change her purpose or something. She needs to be his friend. She needs to be alive!
Is ahjussi dissipated?
So is the river body Kang Chul?!?!?!
No-Face can teleport into the sky?
As a Viki commentor said: "He can teleport anywhere? No fair!!!"
That scene with Dad was terrifying. Where are they?
Freaking most suicidal character ever! At this point, I feel the entire drama is a PSA against suicide.
OYJ is so loyal for sticking to her promise. Where will happen now? He totes remembers something.

I'm sorry for the block heavy text. I didn't think about how it would look, officially posted.

The tender kisses for comfort was amazing amidst all this suspense.

Chul just gives his gun to the bodyguard. AND HE TAKES IT! What happened to illegally HIDDEN weapon. "Hey, you know the boss owns a gun." "Why? He has us to guard him?" "Yeah, but when you're paranoid that may not be enough."

Side note: I wanted to see their staff when the Master and Mistress aren't in proximity.

OYJ's pout was so cute. I just wanted to smile and pinch her cheeks. KC seemed to agree but he settled for watching her and then coming up with a solution. Man, I wanted him to make the ramen but then it wouldn't have appeared. I wanted to see those high school skills GF alluded to. KWB displayed them in UF raymun couple never says die Goonies

The bodyguards reaction to her cut was over the top but cute. It's a new event for a Mistress to be in the house and they want to help care for her. Aw!

So Hee's actress did amazingly. Ahjussi!

I wonder what No-Face reaction was to seeing the world frozen. Was he just idling in his state of no mission? Did KC somehow let him know about the freeze? Was he walking down the street plotting and everyone froxze? His will was too strong, he was still aware. Did he think "take me to Kang Chul/Kang Chul is at the police station" and zap over? I prefer the first because it's so much darker to think of how control his power has over the webtoon.

It's sad that No-Face has to speak thought chyrons. I couldn't tell if they appeared in Yeolworld. Thanks, GF!
No-Face doesn't even have a home. I wonder how his time passes. It might be Kang Chul center, as proven, but on a different cycle.
"Because the only one who desired to know the culprit’s identity more than me… was the culprit himself" chills
He has one mission and tied to that mission is his identity!

I wonder how or if even they hear No-Face's voice? Is it imagined differently for everyone? But for the audience one 'formulated' scary voice.

Sure, sure Soo Bing. Nothing else will surprise you because we've been through so much? New Gen sith lord. I loved Soo Bong in that scene. I needed hishysteria. It made it much lighter.

A Viki commentor said: "I thought she went back to the same place she disappeared from."
I think because she's now a part of the story she goes where she needs to be for the story to develop "logically?" Iffy. What are your theories?

If so, it's a slight reimbursement for No-Face's teleporting abilities. As GF said "killer with a singular purpose. How's that for a silver lining?" Maybe there's two silver linings at the moment. But one day she'll have no where to run, one world or the other & he can possibly do damage in both.

I HAVE to go to bed, it's 2 am. But one note around the halfway mark.

How does No-Face get to the sky...

Now I see why it felt like we’d zoomed through an entire drama in the first six episodes, and Episodes 7 and 8 turned out to be an interlude in fantasyland—because now we’re starting all over again.

Same. I wonder what everything will be like. We know how the next 2? months go in Manhworld but the people who exist their don't.

Will everyone's purpose go unfulfilled? Chul won't catch his baddie. So Hee won't "get the guy". Only Do Yoon has any chance offulfillment and that's barely anything.

Does No-Face reset within the manhwa still? He seems larger than the manhwa at this point. Or did OYJ draw him into the past?

1. YJ’s dream was super sweet. She was so looking forward to attending that fancy party with KC that she was dreaming about it - not realizing the serious trouble she was in at that point, and how dangerous the W world can be.
2. I “sigh dreamily” at how KC is always so gentle with YJ, in this episode and episode 7, almost like he is touching or caressing something very precious that can break easily.
3. The suspense continues to be unpredictable, and despite the creepiness of the faceless killer, I found it funny that he is now pissed off that he has no identity. Also did he kill YJ’s father? The sounds in that airplane bathroom clearly indicate that a physical struggle was occurring inside, then silence. Now I have to wonder…
4. Also why do I feel that when KC saw YJ get shot that it was a vision (stronger than a premonition)? I hope that that vision will NOT come true! *shudders*
5. I wish that that twist in the end didn’t happen, because KC himself said that there are many unknown variables. I understand that desperate times call for desperate measures, but they needed to think on this more. What guarantee do they have that the story will go according to plan? Even if they give KC the solution that he wrote down (the one we the viewers still don’t know), there are no guarantees that the story will go accordingly, because KC has freewill/agency.
6. Also the conflict and story were very compelling until now, and it just seems lazy to solve everything by simply resetting the story. However I have hope that the story will be restored after this temporary detour, and that he’ll regain his memory. I also want KC to get his fighting spirit back.
7. Also the ending of this episode shows that YJ can indeed influence the story, but I hope that her influence is minimal, because I want her relationship with KC to be real, and it can only be real if KC is in control of his own story because of his freewill/agency.
8. I feel so sad for YJ, she just wanted to have her romance with the man of her dreams, and live a happy life, but she was too silly (though adorable) to ignore the real danger of the W world.
9. Also can’t SH be given another purpose in life besides loving KC, she can be his loyal friend and fall for the bodyguard DY. I actually want these two to become real and go to the real world with KC.

On the contrary I thought the "resetting" of Kang Chul was a brilliant plot device- it adds angst between the OTP but it isn't contrived at all- KC's whole world is literally disappearing/ falling apart because of what happened between him and YJ and it's not noble idiocy that prompted him to do it, he actually is being Truly Noble!
It sucks for YJ but if I were her I'd fall in love with KC just that little bit more. Which is why I think it was a very clever way to create tension but keep us viewers rooting for the OTP. I swear though that I'm going to cry a river if they don't eventually somehow get together by the end. ?

I had a feeling that the writer will be using some form of amnesia or time reset (I have no idea what to call it exactly) and she did, but still perfectly woven in the story. She did this in QIHM and also somewhat like this in Nine for the characters who found themselves in their "new lives" all thanks to the time traveler who gets to keep all memories.

I would have preferred that the writer went a different route (I just love to challenge her lol), but this is okay. There is still so much to explore given this done-before plot device. And like what GF said, watching them fall in love the second time will be sweeter and I don't really mind the angst as well.

This is why I felt a little disappointed, because I didn't want the writer to use a trope that she has used in almost all her previous dramas. I mean I really like QIHM, but still I was expecting something more for this drama. Anyways I hope that this detour will be done with soon, and the drama will continue to surprise us in a good way. KC has to remember YJ soon!

Writer Nim must have fallen in love with programming...and I mean coding..

Smarty pants KangChul derived that the manwha world and it's characters revolve around him. He deduced that if one serves it's purpose, that person gets cut out of the manwha and by cut, I mean disappear into oblivion. (Why don't we check where the nurse that injected him with potassium is right now?)

He also said that when the story managed to continue after his 2nd failed suicide attempt, he realized that not only is the manwha forced upon a plot, it's characters have destined fates and roles to assume but because they altered the story or no-face did(?), variables are now in play which caused the ripple effect of many bad things to come.

With this, I'm guessing that Kang Chul and the rest are a bunch of 0's and 1's, a string of codes and unique characters created for a particular and not necessarily singular purpose. All these kinks are bugs in the code that the developer is trying to resolve. So resetting W might have always been part of the programs settings.

That's interesting... a program is actually better if the functions are simple and "modular" or have only one purpose each to avoid a complex spaghetti of code.

The Killer being focused on just killing is a good function.
So-hee focused on loving Kang Chul is a good function.
Even Kang Chul being so rigidly just/logical is a good function. (And I think him shooting OSM in a safe place doesn't 100% count as going against the program.)

So it's Yeon-joo who's a bug or virus. She's the one running around changing the variables and settings and causing everything to get f*cked up. Restarting everything and purging her from the program is a good debugging step.

But that's IF you want them to be programs. Because I don't. I want them to be complex and real. I want Kang Chul to be logical AND emotional. I want the Killer to be a good killer BUT destructible. I want So-hee to love Kang Chul AND be a person too.

I want them all to be spaghetti. The best, most tangled, undebuggable spaghettis they can be.

Writer Nim must have fallen in love with programming…and I mean coding..

I agree . . .
the logic applied here really resemble programming process,

in the simple term, everyday situation, it also like a computer

when it start do lot of thing they aren't supposed to do because of the bug , then the operation system can't get it together but you just want to make it functioning as before,

just re-start it

the piece will fall together just like before even if you stil has the suspicion that not all bug is disappear

0

Er, programming..didn't Kang Chul study computer science?

Maybe Yeonjoo world is fabricated too, and Kang Chul is actually a real person/ based on a real person (real in drama sense), and he's the creator of those two worlds by coding. We thought Yeonjoo is real and Kang Chul is fake, but maybe it is actually the other way round.

This reply is for mary, it is about the part in your post about KC shooting SM in a safe place. I beg to differ. KC shot SM in the heart, sure it may not have caused instant death, but the shot was still very serious. SM's heart stopped in the ambulance, and he had to be resuscitated. He was very close to death, and could've easily died.

@mary and @yoyo

I love these analogies. do one of you work in programming?
It makes sense, and its actually another good jab at the difference between mediocre writing and good writing. one is a series of ciphers and plot devices. and the other is a world full of fleshed out characters, that even if they have one brief scene in the whole comic, are memorable and distinct in some way. the best writing for me is when episodes of tv, have one off or side characters that are utilized this way. it makes the world feel lived in and real. and that's cause the writers treated as such!
that's the difference between how YJ approaches the story and how her dad OSM did/does.
It's why KC can be fleshed out more (cuz he was original conceived in her mind/heart and not her pop's) while the other characters are slaves to their original "programming".
KC was meant to be dynamic and adaptable in a way the others are not. he can shift purposes or change his priorities but the others and the world he exists in CANNOT, that's why it started to collapse in on itself. YJ was the catalyst but imo KC was always heading down the road of existential despair either way. if anything ti may have been worse cuz he may have never truly had all the answers but be close enough to them to go (even more) crazy.

So yeah if W is full of fixed points then imo KC is the true variable, but it wasnt until YJ popped in, that shit could finally start CHANGING for him. (unfortunately cuz W is an extension of him, but isnt made with the same hmm elasticity? as he is, it began to break under the pressure of KC's shifting identity. so he cannot be FREE until he can disconnect himself from that world and ofc the world would need a new anchor as a result. but i digress lol)

0

"I want them all to be spaghetti. The best, most tangled, undebuggable spaghettis they can be."

Ha! That's beautiful. If my hero had to be a food, I'd want him to be spaghetti too. (Not really, I'd probably want him to be sushi or Pad Thai.)

As for the characters, it's an interesting idea but I have to say I like me some spaghetti emotions too. @ Yoyo I do wonder where the nurse is now, though--I feel bad for her. She didn't try to kill Chul, the webtoon did through her.

0

Me too. Although I have to say that she used it in both QIHM and Nine but with a different twist for each. Since she decided to use it for this one, I hope she'll add something different/fresh. Generally, I do not mind using familiar tropes in kdrama as long as they are presented differently and with something quite different from the usual.

In this drama it somehow makes sense on a narrative level. I like what GF pointed out about it being some sort of behavioral experiment. Will YJ make the same decisions? Will KC unknowingly do what he did before? I think it's a chance to challenge the idea of having a character set-up (or fate) and the choices people make. ohgod I sound like a student in a philosophy class dealing with existentialism. haha

I hope you're right and that the drama, even though this trope was used, will be different and fresh.

0

Which reminds me of that Tom Cruise movie, Edge of Tomorrow. Like they had to keep resetting certain events in their timeline to change a particular outcome.

0

I love the idea actually of YJ and KC going back to the start, while believing it to be (their) end. but in fact I believe they are going to end up in the exact same place again via different circumstances.
Cuz ultimately, she can change events but she cannot change who KC is, and that is a man who is far too smart for his own good lol. and likewise she cannot change who SHE is and her past which is so deeply intertwined with W and who KC is. far beyond him being a dream bf. which is why she'll never be able to "move on" the way he thinks she will/should.
basically what i'm looking forward to is once they DO find themselves in the same place again, will they be wiser and better equipped to handle it? considering that OSM might be back in the picture soon. and OYJ remembers what went down and why. i like to think that THIS time they can fix it, and save the comic! (possibly free KC from its claws as well)

0

Oh I haven't seen any of her other work. In a sense I'm glad tho so I won't be "spoiled" by being able to guess what could happen next. But I hope she pulls a new trick out of her bag and surprises you this drama as well!

She already has for me, and I've seen both Nine and QIHM. It's been a part of the premise since the start, but Chul realizing it's a webtoon was so well done for me--and I never expected it so early on.

Each of her works has a distinct tone: epic romance for QIHM, epic murder mystery/thriller for Nine. This one feels like an epic Superhero story in all the best ways. Nine was definitely her most time bendy-twisty drama, but this one is starting to measure up.

0

@Michykdrama She likes her dramas all twisty lol and yey for you who is coming in with a clean slate regarding the writer and her tendencies. She's awesome and I hope she did not lose that.

@Cozybooks Nine was so twisted I actually drew time charts, but W has been making my head implode for the past couple of weeks that I'm pretty sure Nine's already been dethroned if we're looking at the how-twisted-insane-mindblowing-is-your-drama scale.

0

Now that you mention it, I finally know why I get strong de ja vu feeling over this. I forget that it's the same writer of QIHM.
But I have to say that she use it better in QIHM. At least no noble idiocy was involve, it fate play with the OTP but they trying their best to overcome it which make their separation more tragic and sadder (boy, those feelings the first time I watch eps 15).

I'm sorry KC, eventhough you was written to be the perfect hero, you still can't beat Bong Do (er, up to now there's still no kdrama hero that can beat Bong Do on my list!)

That aside, if the writer follow the same plot, this amnesia will be solved in 2 eps will see more love dovey around eps 14, but then brace for worse angst-separation in last 2 eps.

The story reset was a really smart way to buy time/spread time over the 20 episodes (and maybe save having to move between too many filming locations!), since the characters have to live their moments over again, but this time, the audience is doubly emotionally invested!

Even though I know it's not a new trick from this writer, it still got me completely in the feels - and we're not even at halfway point!

I've said it before, I'm a sucker for OTPs who keep falling in love no matter what time or circumstance they end up in!

And omo, does that mean we get to see a replay of the slap-kiss scene in the dress shop (Take 2)?!

I dont like the idea that she did this to draw out the story so it can list the 16 (its not 20 afaik) episodes. She knows how to maximize time very well and imo she doesnt do anything Just Because. thats almost anathema to the theme in this story so far.
It makes sense why she took this tack, KC and YJ couldnt have a happy ending yet, because so much was still unsolved and not dealt with. There needs to be closure for KC and W comic before he and YJ can have their sequel/happily ever after. and they reached this point in the story in a very organic way that can be supported by narrative events that occured from ep 1 to now.
That's not just putting in a plot device to stretch it out longer. cuz it would presume that KC and YJ had a decisive and organic end before that wrench was thrown into the works but the wrench was there all along, they (and we) were just ignoring it! im saying u gotta fix the plumbing before u can sell the house ok. (idek if that analogy works lol)

I love the writer's other works, so I'm definitely not saying she did it just to draw out the episodes Probably could've phrased it better. I'm trying to say that I have complete faith she knows what she's doing, and it's a brilliant way to structure the narrative!

(although if it also helped make the filming crew's schedules simpler by being able to film longer in one place, that would be brilliant writing indeed!)

Personally, I subscribe to the theory that others have raised, ie, that the pace of KC and YJ's initial romance was rushed, but that it was deliberately written that way as a "manhwa romance", to make the "real" romance even more special later on.

lol, is No Face Killer a piece of plumbing, or is he deserving of a Real Character? :D

0

@Tai I also noticed how this writer is really trying to give justice to the details she put in her work. There's no major overly coincidental/convenient scenes/circumstances so far. In the grand scheme of things, they're connected and those that seem to be lose threads will reveal its connections later on.

@Thursdaynexxt I like the idea of a manhwa romance and a real romance. I'm one of those hoping to see more organic interaction towards a full on romance the second time around in this one.

0

@Celine: most of us have watched live action anime and webtoon dramas at some point, and they're enjoyable and entertaining for what they are.

But what blows my mind about W is the way it is set in a dramaverse and the hero is a completely fictional manhwa character (at least, to start out with), but it manages to make us question the reality of the world we live in, what creates our identities and our relationships with each other, whether free will is just a fallacy or if it really exists, what's our purpose for living ... and other existential crises! (that translucent flickering thing with S Hee was just awesome)

Rather than a romance where the OTP defies family and society to be together, they'd be infinitely happier ever after if their family and friends were there with them in their happiness. So I firmly want Dad and So Hee and Do Yoon to stick around and help define this new world, whatever the rules may be!

Honestly rewriting everything seemed like the most viable option, aside from physically leading the faceless killed by the hand back into the manhwa. I honestly expected for there to be an amnesia track (but technically it's not amnesia if it never happened to begin with) and time travel to be involved in the plot, this writers always has them in all her shows!!! And she does it soo GOOD. I'm looking forward to them falling in love again, even now with everything stacked against them.

And judging by the preview [SPOILERS FROM PREVIEW]

we- and the characters- all know that the real solution is either YJ or dad finally giving an identity to the killer, so the story can actually finish. this is more like a quick fix, because as KC said, they don't have time on their hands, considering No Face could literally be anywhere and everywhere atm

Am I the only one who felt bad for the faceless killer? I mean he literally has no purpose, no character, no emotions with a single minded goal of killing KC and employed whenever required by OSM.

Sounds too cruel than how KC is used in a way. At least for KC, he was fleshed out and treated with care.

The faceless killer is literally a trope used when convenient and thrown away later. Imagine, If all tropes had some kind of being and a mind of own?

@divyrus

I did feel a little sympathy for our villain. I mean it's bad enough that he doesn't have a face to begin with but what I did find puzzling was he had literally the same line of questioning kang chul had when he learned about the truth. In that very moment, he mirrored kang chul and that sent shivers down my spine.

Others like So Hee just wondered what was going on with them, but no-face literally questioned his very own existence. Like "I have logic and common sense too, ya know. No-face ain't no fool!"

So while he trudges down the path of knowing his purpose and existence, I will always have this feeling that no-face is like kang chul's missing twin.

And yes, while we all anticipate a merry mix of tropes, I will feed my brain with mind blowing scenarios.

we all just searching for purpose and meaning in this world. but who can give it to us? ;_; sorry but i was like "damn thats deep yo" when i was watching the killer rage at OSM. i mean he kinda had a right to know, man!

in a way No Face mirrors KC because he was created purely to haunt KC's every step. of everyone in the manga, his existence revolves the most intensely around KC. he WANTS to be caught by KC, so he can know who HE is and finally fulfill his purpose ie to be defeated by KC. whether no face KNOWS that's his purpose or if he just thinks fighting KC to death is. idek. but yeah that whole thing was a mind fuck and a gut punch at the same time

Yes, I like the idea that there doesn't need to be The (mwahahaha) Bad Guy in a drama - it's much more interesting if they spread the badness out across all the characters, including the main characters!

Could it be that since No-Face existence is tied purely to Kang Chul he was therefore metaphysically (?) tied to him and his willpower. Sort of how like some twins know what the is other is thinking. Therefore when Kang Chul realizes he's a manhwa so does No-Face. Also since Kang Chul has been fighting Dad since the first suicide bridge and becoming his own 'person' wouldn't No-Face also, to be able to keep up with him?

My mind hurts now - I was under the assumption until 2 episodes ago that the killer was the prosecutor or someone he hired.

The details on this drama tho. How great of an actor is LJS that I can feel every emotions that KC is going through. I was bawling at the end of the episode. 3. that was brilliant, funny and sad all at the same time. like damn even cold blooded killer should get a face! lol.
Also is it just me or is "Who am I? What am I?" becoming a pretty common refrain for the W characters?

5. there is no guarantee. and in fact i believe these 2 will end up coming to the same conclusions all over again and meeting and fall in love all over again! but ofc KC had no other ideas at the time and the situation was so dire that to do nothing at all would have been irresponsible at best.

6. it IS lazy, that's the point! idk it feels like another reference to how this is a not so uncommon narrative device used by writers. albeit a very unpopular one as far as readers/viewers are concerned lol. KC never lost his fighting spirit, he's back to where he was pre YJ so he's back to who he was pre revelations. meaning he's gonna be just as dogged about getting answers (and context!) as he was before. lol didnt think that thru KC did u?

Okay, I can’t this episode is crazy! Crazy! Crazy! I understand there were a lot of flashbacks but I think they did that on purpose due to Rio Olympics. They need ep 9 to end with a bang since it will be this week’s cliffhanger (even # episodes have crazier cliffhangers compared to odd # episodes since they end the week, but it’s reversed now.)
I understand Kang Chul’s perspective and way of restarting the comic back to where they never met through a dream. Yes, it’s a selfish act in our perspective but remember Kang Chul is a righteous character who puts others first (and he’s smart to know that Yeon Joo would be hurt and won’t forget it like he would but he had no choice). He has to protect his world and people in it. I pity him cause he’s losing in both ways. If he didn’t make Yeon Joo draw it into a dream. There will be that constant anxiousness of Yeon Joo dying, the people around him will start vanishing and he can’t explain to them the truth so he will painfully watch them suffer or constantly lie to keep them from disappearing. And making the dream happen is a torture although he can’t remember. The fact that he finally had the will to create his own destiny and purpose to live but has to be imprisoned by the purpose within the comic again to save everyone.
Now, I wonder what happened to Dad. If he was teleported back to Korea due to No Face culprit, I wonder if they will show how the passengers, his friends would react of him disappearing in midair. (LOL!) [SPOILERS FROM PREVIEW]
That scene when Kang Chul wrote a letter to Yeon Joo’s dad. I hope he will request for the culprit to have an identity to and for Yeon Joo to have and identity in his world and give him a happy ending with her. I hope so please.
[SPOILERS FROM PREVIEW]
They pulled the amnesia plot in a creative way. It wasn’t there to serve as one of the plots to separate the leads. It has a purpose which I like. Kudos to the writer.

If everything was a dream I don't think she'll have her identity...
The main problem with chul's dream idea is when everything went back as a dream I think no face was with dad and now he is teleported to comic world with no face... who has his own will and threatening dad to draw again...
Yet again when we build a wall of our own theories W always manages to hit home run past it..,so we have to rebuild again.. its excitingly frustrating...

Since they restarted W to the time where Yeon Joo was never dragged in, if she will be dragged in she or her father could write her an identity like she's a doctor in the hospital Kang Chul was admitted before and have a business card only for the comic. It will solve the problem of her having no identity there since her business card will be valid.

Thanks Girlfriday for the recap! You said so many things that I was nodding to the whole time!

When I think I can't love Kang Chul anymore they carry on making him Smart (I love how he is the one who figures out the rules of the world and explains it to us) and Smooth (I wanted to giggle-die when he told Yeon Joo he prefers revealing dresses- I don't know why it wasn't pervy sounding but actually swoony!) and Sweet (those little cute moments of shoe tying, forehead kisses, hugs) and Self Sacrificial (he really has the whole hero complex down pat- sacrificing his love to save the people in his world, and it feels so natural for him to do so!)

It's amazing and I almost cannot believe that because of the manhwa premise they managed to make the heroine Self Impose Amnesia on the Hero, which not only makes the idea believable, but also Extra Angsty! It's the best kind of angsty romance possible!

Writer Nim count me as super duper ultra impressed at your skills. There are rules, it makes sense and there are major feels! If I wasn't so sad for Yeon Joo and Kang Chul, I'd be even more in awe. As it were I can only wait with bated breath for what you have in store for us in the next episode but I have decided to put my FULL FAITH in you! *shoves heart over*

Yeah it's proof you CAN have a smart hero and yet have an exciting story and romance. Don't have to depend on them making silly decisions to create conflict or angst!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I like that he is smart. However, he also jumps to conclusions in a way that makes me crazy. Like, assuming shooting her wouldn't hurt her because he once stabbed a weird guy and it didn't hurt him. Or later, that she can now be hurt in his world because she is a part of the cartoon now. Maybe she got hurt because she is real and did it to herself? Both times when dad and she were not injured it was KC that did it, maybe it is just that HE can't injure them in this world? There are just so many possibilities that should be considered. I'd rather see him come to a conclusion after ruling other options out than just settling on the first thing he thinks of and then taking that as fact.

But then, I guess kdramas are plagued with that kind of faulty logic that is supposed to be received as brilliance (one of the reasons I can rarely stand to watch Korean crime procedurals). And since he is the Main Character in his cartoon he gets to move the world along how he wants to to some extent which makes it a little more palatable.

Still, it makes me crazy!

But overall I concur, I'd rather have a smart hero and exciting story that generates conflict rather than relying on romantic choices that completely disrespect the agency of their romantic partner for angst.

I just love how the characters have the same questions like the audience. It shows that the writer is aware of the details and intends to address them. I think I already said this in previous recaps, but I am saying it again because it is one of the things I like about my drama, the attention to details.

I as well liked the use of the amnesia plot device here because there's some creativity to it. I hung on every word and scene in this episode just like the others, and that's something since the last drama I watched was Signal and I felt the same adrenaline rush while watching W.

I'm pretty sure Yeon Joo is inserting herself in the webtoon world to watch over Kang Chul, but there's still the question if her role as main character ends by that reset as No-Face is still in the present real world and will terrorize Kang Chul again.

I have a strong feeling that just like Kang Chul remembers being stabbed by OSM and other self-aware things, he'll remember the "dream" he had and realize that the girl (YJ) is also in his webtoon world.

This is really getting more and more interesting every week. Thanks for the recap and thoughts!

Well, actually i have 2 very big question:
a. First, WTH is happen with Daddy?
is he being kidnapped like GF assume, or he still be okay inside the toilet?
b. If W worlds is resetting, Does that mean Faceless Murderer will also disappear from YJ world? Then Daddy will be okay. Since you know, the scene when Kangchul cross to YJ World (in the police station) is just a dream too right? right? RIGHT?

Oh my head hurts...
MBC better air the Ep 9 tonight....

a. I actually thought Daddy OSM was assaulted in the toilet, not kidnapped...^^' But since No-Face has teleporting abilities, it's possible he transported OSM to his own house and badgered him there.

b. There is a possibility that No-Face will disappear from the real world, but there's a possibility he won't unless OSM drew him back into the world perhaps or Yeon Joo did. I don't think the danger for Kang Chul and Yeon Joo has been lifted despite that all-a-dream plot. Since No-Face is self-aware, he may continue to be so and will be coming back to haunt KC and YJ without context or somewhat of a context again.

I feel that this episode resumed episodes 1-6's pace.

Although Kang Chul and Jeon-yoo's interactions in episode 7 were cute, it somehow felt out of place, rushed. Because, are we supposed to believe that he was falling in love with her while he himself said that he shot her through her heart/chest? (Most of us had the hope that when he shot her, he had aimed to a "safe" place, as in, just to confirm his theory that she was invincible. And, yes, he saw that Dad wasn't injured when he stabbed him, but, it could have been that he wasn't hurt because it was a knife, or any other reason, so, Kang Chul just assuming that Jeon-yoo was invincible (maybe he thought that Dad and Jeon-yoo were from the same dimension, so, if Dad couldn't be injured, Jeon-yoo couldn't be either. But, why did Kang Chul take that for granted? And it's strange how easily he accepts/absorbs weird things, like, he's completely Okay with the fact that a portal was opened, and he just reached out his hand to it) shows how he just goes along with his theories when he's fixated on something/accomplishing his goals. Even if that means to shoot an innocent girl through the heart, even when SHE SAVED him twice.

The same thing happened when she was in prison. He was relentlessly asking her to tell him the truth about her world, because, according to him that was the only way for her to get out of there given that he "had no means" to help her. Really? Did he really not have the power to get her out of prison? He's really powerful in that world, and even the police officers and the officer/detective now turned politician are constantly saying how powerful and untouchable Kang Chul is. And all of us, now know, that he DID have a way to get Jeon-yoo out of prison: the fake marriage thing.

So, are we really supposed to believe that he was falling for her while all he could think of was: to know the truth about "her world" and "his existence".
He shot her; when she was in prison, instead of comforting her or try to help her, he pushed/urged her to tell him the truth (yes, he maybe cared for her knowing how painful the experience of being in prison can be, but his main goal was to get the truth he wanted to know of).
AND, He even shot her father! I feel that Jeon-yoo forgave Kang Chul too fast.

So, although the scenes in this episode (8) where they separated were so sad, I have high hopes that this will serve as a way to make their relationship more believable, given that it will have a new beginning: everything will restart, from the way of how they met to how he will fall in love with her.

AND, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how existencialist this drama is.
Kan Chul says, "It’s cruel, isn’t it? How can there be only one reason you were born and exist?", but minutes later, he's giving up his will and life to the "destiny" that was made and created for him.
He tried to break the (webtoon and author's) determinism and live a "happy" life, but despite his...

I completely agree with everything you said. I think episodes 1 to 8 are like a long introduction which aims at giving a setting and explaining the plot of the story. I think now the real deal starts and because Chul doesn't remember Yeon Joo the romance will feel more natural and consistent than what we were shown. Like you I was astonished that Yeon Joo forgave Chul so fast after he shot her dad, shot her and used to his advantage the fact that she was in prison. So to be honest I wasn't really watching the drama for its romance. But who knows now it may upgrade itself and become better

I'm always smiling during the happy, cute, & funny scenes between Yeon Joo and Chul.

Chul's analysis of the unknown murderer was interesting. It made sense that the killer would react that way. I'm so curious about what will happen to the killer now and what can OSM do about the killer's identity?

I hope that Kang Chul's friends can cross over to the real world and be happy & alive by the end of this drama.

I just love our main couple. They are cute when they are being playful and hot when they are ehem in the mood. haha In these scenes, they seem to forget that they are from two different worlds. They look like your typical Kdrama couple. However, throw them in a situation wherein their differences and the reasons why they cannot be together are flashing in neon lights, then the you-and-me-against-the-worlds feels weigh down on you. And it shows on our couple's faces too. These are my favorite scenes of KC and YJ because IT IS their reality (for now). Their sweet scenes are just like good dreams/fantasies, but the scenes of their sad reality is when you truly see how much they care for and love each other.

Every single time KC kissed YJ on the forehead, I felt pang in my heart. When KC would give her a reassuring (sad??) smile, I slowly died inside. And when KC said in the end...

"I want to hug you, but I can't even do that. It will make me hesitate." SOBBING...

"Forget about me. I'm just a manhwa character." BAWLING...

"When you miss me, you can see me in a comic book" I WAS A MESS.

And when KC woke up from the "dream" with tears in his eyes... I'M SO DONE WITH THIS DRAMA. DONEEEE.

All those lines, mannnnn !!!

I kept telling her to hug him for one last time but then at exact moment he said he can't do that. My heart just broke !

I love how YJ doesn't protest or come up with alternate options, she knows its the only way. She knows she would be the person who suffers but willingly does it to save KC and his world ! Out of love she has for him! Out of the deep belief that the entire manhwa world is of real people !!!

That's what gets me ! She believes they are real and she is willing to carry the burden to save his friends. That's one of the greatest sacrifice I have seen in a kdrama!

All I can say is that...

Yeon joo showed the very best of her strength in those moments. Where someone could just easily breakdown, cry and beg, she held herself up with enough sympathy and understanding to know the gravity of the situation even the consequences of their previous decisions/actions.

I think this is the first time I can actually say that she played the heroine part. She didn't insist on what she wanted, she didn't bargain for more time, she humbly noded and that probably takes so much guts to nod and say yes when every inch of her being was telling her otherwise.

She knew what she had to do and she did it with grace. That makes me respect her more as she took the part of the heroine and accomplished her task. We'll probably get to see her actual breakdown but as far as that particular moment was concerned, she deserves all the effin credit.

I don't really like Yeon Joo character's much because she's too much of a fan girl who lives on her own little fantasy world. But I must admit I really liked her in this part of the episode when she didn't try to bargain with Chul and accepted his decisions as the best solution because honestly it was the best thing they could do. For once she acted like an adult in a logical way. I really appreciated this and she really went up in my estimation

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Completely agree!! She mustered every bit of her strength to not break down and to just follow KC's suggestion, knowing that this was the best solution for all of them. She was crumbling inside, but she held on just so KC would not have an even harder time of letting go if she were to start sobbing relentlessly and begging for him to stay. Definitely earned my respect and I was crying inside right by her.

I'm like in legit tears at the ending.

1) HOW FUCKIN DARE YOU PUNCH ME IN THE HEART WITH THAT FINAL SHOT AT HER WEDDING RING. THEY NEVER EVEN GOT A PROPER ENDING.

2) Is her dad okay?! Oh my god I'm worried about him

3) it makes sense that the killer wants to know his own identity the most. No face, no name. I'm in firm belief that his identity can be most accurately described as the incarnation of Kang Chul's tragic backstory, as he seeks to basically bring about misfortune and serve as a plot device to the MC.

4) If the killer doesn't turn out to be connected to assemblyman Han in some way, I'm gonna be so disappoint.

5) I... I really feel for OYJ here. It's a difficult choice, but the most sensible one, and it's always nice (and painful as fuck) to see such self sacrifice in dramas, with pure logic and no melodramatic nonsense. [SPOILERS FROM PREVIEW]

6) man, when will they explain how she keeps popping in. what are rules, yo.

7) I'm legit crying and screaming at the end my parents told me to stop being dramatic HOW CAN I BE WITH THAT ENDING *shakes fist* at least this is just episode eight. 6 more episodes of beautiful pain to go.

8) That... that fancy ball dream was so nice while it lasted. The actors have such amazing onscreen chemistry together, I was clutching my heart at that scene.

9) This episode was basically more plot twists and some sweet moments with some terrible heartbreak in between. Ow.

ahhhh can't wait to see how next episode will frickin rip my heart out.

To answer your question number 6, so far it has been that YJ was being dragged into the story because of KC's will, and because she became an integral part of the story. So the plot needed her character, because KC was looking for her, and so she got dragged into the W world.

However after this episode I don't know if the rules will change, or if they will be the same. I also really hope that she won't insert herself into the W world, because she'd have to be masochistic to do that. We also still don't know if she has the ability to do that, because so far her traveling between worlds has been completely out of her control. I hope that she will get dragged back into the W world, because of KC's subconscious, that would be more bearable.

Wow this show is getting crazier by the episode! It continually blows my mind every time, haha. I'm so sad that their short romance is over now though and hope that they end up back together again. Do you think that since YJ can draw KC she'll be able to give them more purpose in life and make them more "human"? If so, in theory wouldn't she be able to fix some of the problems that arose the first time she got involved in their world and make it so that this time around no characters need to disappear? I'm just rambling at this point haha.

Required fields are marked *

ahh while in theory that sounds great, it actually messes with my heart because I'm treating them like real people, i.e. they should have their own free will to do stuff and change and you know, be human... so while it would be great that YJ can go in and "change" them, it would also make me sad, because it would remind me that they can be changed in the first place, because they aren't real people.

Do I even make sense? haha. Sometimes Im not sure because this show messes with my brain AND my heart!!

Yes, your points make sense! I didn't really think about that when I first thought of my idea. But that definitely changes things because I think YJ thinks of them as real people as well. And we know for certain that KC does as well.

How can the Villain teleport though? That is the worst! I guess it's because he needs to appear and disappear at will after he does his evil deeds.

Also, I was really confused with those two fantasy sequences back to back like that. When she woke up and they were talking about why they can't go out because of the killer and I was like did they have that conversation and I missed it?!!

And that whole dream sequence. I had to yell at my tv regarding that! Kang Chul why? I get why he decided to ask Yeon-joo to do that but what about her?! I feel so bad for her. Hopefully, this whole self-imposed amnesia won't last too long!

And does anyone know if we are going to get episodes 9 and 10 tomorrow or just 9? I couldn't find any info on that.

I'm mostly ignoring the last 5 minutes. Haven't processed it yet. we're talking geologic time scales before I wrap my hear around that. But otherwise...

...Wow! Killer can teleport. In the real world. Talk about a scary adversary.

Show seems to be doing a great job of explaining old mysteries while raising new ones, like how the bleep do you stop a teleporting marksman assassin??

I swear one time when assassin was teleporting there was black smoke around him. Teleporting.... black smoke.... pink dress.... amnesia.... Where have I seen that before? Mondays & Tuesdays on Let's Fight Ghost, that's where. The "real" universe that people jump to from the W webtoon universe is the Ghost webtoon universe. Argh!!!!

Meanwhile, if Kang Chul was really worried about Yeon-joo and the assassin who wants to go after his new family, maybe he could have divorced her and married So-hee. That would give her a reason to exist (well, until she got shot). And she's as good as dead if he ignores her, so it's not hardly even wrong, is it? A bullet to the brain would be a mercy killing compared to the agony of disappearing, right?

Or, he loves Yeon-joo but he has to pretend to love So-hee to save her from an agonizing death/disappearance. Talk about a good excuse for two-timing !

Is it just me or the newly published episode looks different from the original work of Dad. The colors are more muted (the original screamed vivid colors everywhere) and it gives off the dreamy feel. I dunno why...

Also, again it could be just me, but the manhwa world sometimes looks muted too as if it were the real world. The scene on the rooftop when they were about to part ways is exactly like a scene in the real world (muted colors).

Because of Queen In Hyun's Man, I kinda saw this coming, but GAH!!! these kinds of reset plot lines kill me. And they go from the good kind of frustrating to the bad kind so easily if they drag on too long. Thank god this drama doesn't seem to stick to any one trajectory for too long. As it is, I have a feeling tomorrow's episode is going to be a reaaaaaaally rough one. I was so digging the sham marriage too...whimper...

That bit aside, I do really have to hand it to the writer that, while I have found myself consistently guessing the answers to W's riddles pretty accurately so far, I don't find myself muttering to my screen "Well, duh" upon the reveal. I'm never 100% sure I'll be right, and more importantly, the answer isn't nearly as important as how it plays out for the characters. Like the big bad. I may have guessed what was up with him (and still have a sneaking suspicion as to how he'll be defeated), but that doesn't make how he chased down Yeon Joo any less terrifying. Cause holy $#%* that was scary. Lesser dramas would have me rolling my eyes and calling the twist revealers "Captain Obvious" under my breath, but I'm still watching this drama through my fingers and each new development still hits like a ton of bricks (see above).

I meant, everyone has different tastes for dramas. What may work for others may not work for you. I hated DotS but the majority loved it and I couldn't understand the hype. Whereas Healer I loved it and thought the hype was justified. My Love From Another Star is another popular drama which I wasn't hooked into like everyone else is. While W has me completely hooked since episode 1. I thought this drama is pretty refreshing but I may be bias as I'm a fan of the writer so yeah.

You don't have to follow what the majority likes. What's popular doesn't always mean that it will suit your taste. It doesn't always suit mine, so your opinion of this drama is completely understandable. Unless you're curious about what will happen next, then I'd say why not drop it if it isn't enjoyable for you? The good news is, there are hundreds of other dramas in drama land to choose from :)

Oh the Buffy/Angel feels! That brings me back. Angst galore!!!

On to W.
I am confused, but I am not holding against the show. It's a crazy enough ride that I will be satisfied if we get to an acceptable ending, despite the rule bending (or lack of rules) on the way to that end. For instance the exposition scene WAS awkward. At first I thought it was logical bc I believed Yeon Joo was "watching" or reading Chul have the epiphany as the manhwa filled itself in (as in previous eps). But I was wrong bc when Yeon Joo pops back into the car she doesn't know where they're headed. Hmmm, head-scratcher...
My take on why the chyrons for No-face: Because dad didn't even give him enough detail to have a voice. He has always been silent in the manhwa, so in the real world, although self-aware he is even less actualized and his speech comes out in a "manhwa" way.

It's so heart-rending for Yeon Joo to have all those memories by herself, but I am glad that someone still has them, because if not then *I* would be the sad one carrying the memories of this ship all by myself--well the only one in my real-life aquaintance.
So glad I have the rest of you beanies to sail with me.
Isn't it tomorrow already?

Daebak! I actually watched without subs lol! Thanks for the recap GF.

Bow* to writernim. Screw the rules! cos the intensity of the character's emotions can change the variables. How brilliant is that!

Our faceless hoodie is my new favourite character. He has put the webtoon back on track.

When that first bullet went into YJ's forehead, I gasped! it felt like 'game of thrones' for a few seconds..this is a show with few rules after all.

As much as I love the rom-com, I am glad YJ came out of her delusional fantasy, I was beginning to cringe...

You and me both! hahaha! I cannot believe I am saying this but boy was I glad that the ball scene was just a dream. I love cheese, but that scene I could do away with. However, it makes sense that it was overly done because it's YJ's dream. haha! Props to the writer for writing in all these cheesy scenes and lines with proper context. I still think KC using the book of romance was a good excuse for the cheese. It was woven perfectly in the story even when they were about to part ways. I could have rolled my eyes at that scene of a guy tying a girl's shoe lace, but not in this one. It was so sad.

I have wondered if the writer is simply making a point about writing good stories.

Like when the father was writing purely on his whim and fancy and created episodes that did not stay consistent with the characters in the story, it feels like characters rebelled and everything started falling apart...

And when characters within a story start living their own lives, it is even more likely that the story will become just worse - especially with characters that are not given a lot of depth.

And I think our drama writer wants to tell us how to actually write a good story. And that lesson starts from ep 9.

...

However during this time of chaos, there was love.

Love that we got invested in.

...

So, we rejoiced in the fun when webtoon readers suffered and now we will have to suffer a bit while Webtoon adjusts itself. Because I think, our webtoon writer now got his groove back and perhaps will draw a story that will be more compelling.

[SPOILERS FROM PREVIEW]

...

I am so excited to see the original KC - the one with naughty naughty smile when he kicked ass.

Why can't Yeon Joo draw the killer dead? Is the killer's will too strong like Kang Chul's? But she should at least try... If it doesn't work, then give the killer a face and identity and work his demise into the plot in a credible and satisfying way that even the killer could "accept" and stay dead.

With the intelligence of KC, it will bring even more incoherence to webtoon world. The whole thing started because things were happening illogically in Webtoon world and KC recognized this.

So, I do not think it will work out if they simply draw something. It needs to have some logic for it to work.

That is why, quite possibly, webtoon writer has to be figure out the identify of the culprit so that KC can hunt him down as per the story and then there is a happy ending.

Agree with you even though this episode is messing me up right now.
I just hope the series doesn't end with YJ being one of the patient of a mental hospital and the webtoon world happens when she has one of her hallucinations.
That would really kill me :(

Also, if the purpose of the world is to find the killer, does the world collapse entirely if that killer is now removed from the equation? Would everyone, including KC, just fade away?

Instead of fading away, I think the story will come to an end (since the main conflict of the purpose resolved and KC's purpose served) and the time in the webtoon will just stop, like how it was when KC almost drowned in Han River.

My question too. Or erase the killer from the story. However, like what KC said, it seems the killer is very much like him. He is looking for his purpose and he's self-aware and he seems to operate under different manhwa rules.

I guess he cannot die because he has yet to fulfill his purpose...

No-Face is a smartass...he could have gone after OYJ because teleporting to him is a breeze, but he went after the very person that could explain things to him or the very person that could end his existence. I smell a plot of evil and connivance about to unfold. Dayum. If these two team up, all hell will break loose in kdramaland.

Required fields are marked *

Well, to me it looks like the killer got self aware because there is a deep connection between him and Kang Chul, deeper than the rest of the characters; maybe that will bring more surprises later: is the killer a part of Kang Chul himself?

This episode was specially thought-provoking, with all the existential crisis and life and death decisions. Too much for my poor heart if you add the heartbreaking separation in the end. Hopefully the writer will make up for this in the future, with lots of cuddles and scenes of our couple just enjoying "everyday romance" life :D

Ah, and how funny was to have Yeon Yoo and Soo Bong arguing about being obsessed with W characters? lol! that scene was gold. XD

You mean, like option 4 ?

I didn't get how YJ disappeared from the real world when No-Face shot her. KC did think of her before , but she didn't return to the comic world until that time. Perhaps the rules and variables have now changed ? Perhaps it is KC now who would save YJ and make her come to him each time she is in danger? I doubt it but I'm confused.

Also, about No-Face teleporting... Perhaps he can do so because, as KC states, he is where the story is needed. He perhaps can easily appear (teleport) where he wants/needs to. I feel that with No-Face , there is really no reason or context -- at least , up until nowm. Perhaps KC has written YJ's dad for help in giving him an identity.

2. I was rolling on the floor with laughter when said plot device spoke in the real word in chyron. I had to pause the episode to regain my breath.

4. The bloody trailer had me breaking out in goosebumps.
5. Yeon Joo was horribly underdressed for the supposed state dinner at the Blue House.
6. That wasn't the Blue House.
7. A whole bunch of torrid kisses from the previous episodes, yet they never made me sigh like the forehead kisses in these episodes.
8. I felt a bit betrayed when Kang Chul elected for Yeon Joo to erase everything, but I'm pretty sure he preferred her suffering with heartbreak than actually dead.
