No one mess with this Grandfather’s baby girl

Anyone who professes to be a k-drama fan probably knows Park Geun-hyung (Salut D’Amour, Angry Mom) by face, if not by name. He usually plays the stern aging CEO who opposes his son or daughter’s unsuitable marriages, or a self-sacrificing patriarch from a poor but prodigious family. This time, he’s breaking boundaries for all Korean senior actors by becoming an action star in the new action-mystery movie Grandfather. Go Bo-kyul, who has recently become a more mainstream supporting actress through small roles in Cinderella and the Four Knights and Second to Last Love, plays his orphaned granddaughter.

Grandfather starts out by introducing us to Park Geun-hyung’s character, who is a Vietnam war veteran fallen on hard times. He makes his living as a bus driver. One day, he receives a call that his estranged son has committed suicide. At the funeral, he comes face-to-face with his teenaged granddaughter for the first time. It’s clear that she wants nothing to do with him when she says, “You caused his death. He died because you abandoned him.” This reproach goes straight to his heart, and though he failed to protect his son, he will do whatever it takes to protect the only family he has left.

However, something doesn’t feel right; his father and soldier instincts tell him that a simple drunken suicide may not be the entire story. After seeing strange bruise marks on his son’s corpse, Park Geun-hyung becomes more and more convinced that this may have been a homicide. His pleas for a re-investigation fall on deaf ears, as the police have already been bribed by nebulous corporate sources. Jung Jin-young (Dazzling Temptation) plays a greedy company department head, who is trying to cover up the son’s death. Eventually, Park Geun-hyung realizes that it is up to him to prove his son’s murder and catch the culprit, so that no harm can come to his granddaughter.

One of the reasons that actor Park Geun-hyung said that he signed onto this project was that it depicts a raw story about the unbalanced nature of our society where the privileged continue to thrive and the disadvantaged often have no recourse in unjust situations. It’ll be interesting to see how his character fights against “the man” in this upcoming movie. Action noir film Grandfather is coming out next week on August 31.

Halbae!!!!!

Can't believe I'm saying this but I am quite excited to see this once it gets subbed. Is this why he is guesting on Please Take Care of my Fridge? I'm always so happy to see the halbaes in other projects. It's great that the show gave them a chance to show their personalities instead of just being the mean CEO father etc etc.

I was wondering when I'd see an article about this here.

Park Geun-hyung is a living legend in my book! I first saw him in Sandglass and he just stood out even though I had a crush on ajusshi Choi Min-soo. I can't freaking forget that amazing drama because they keep reminding me of it.

This is a perfect role for him and I know that he will give it everything. It made me sad that this took a toll on his body to a point where he had to be taken to the hospital. He is 76 years old and live shooting plus action on high elevation was exhausting.

Mad respect for Mr Park. I can't wait to watch him in his new movie and appreciate all the effort that he put into it.

What a great news!! Now, I will put this in my watch-list. Love to see the halbaes are getting busy. Park Geun-hyung charisma is no joke. I cannot wait to see him in this move.
I have seen the granddaughter in Second to Last Love. Kinda annoyed with her character, but she did have beautiful eyes. Hope she will deliver well in this movie.

this sounds fun. i'm sure there aren't many good leading roles for older, aging actors so i'm sure he was happy to take on something substantial.

and he's still so handsome and charismatic at his age! he would look amazing in classic hollywood looks too (think trench coat, hat, and smoking pipe or a really smart suit).

Glad that actress is getting to step out of the antagonist role to do something more interesting. She's very dislikable at the evil step sister in Cinderella and Four Knights.

when i read the title of the post, somehow i was reminded of the movie, Taken. nobody messes with Liam Neeson's daughter.. hahaha

the synopsis sounds a bit like Taken, but i think it's more towards mystery thriller, like solving the mystery of his son's death while protecting his grad daughter..

First time seeing the young actress, somehow she don't look like your typical korean actress, more japanese looking, to me.. and reminds me of Ady An (taiwanese actress)..

Taken! You are right. Something about an old vet kicking butt for their family that is more real so makes it more exciting maybe.

Am I the only one who read the hangul on the poster expecting "halaboji" just to crack up laughing when I found out it says "keuraendeu pade"? ?

Koreanized English is just the best. Hearteu!

If you're bored one day, try looking up "learn hangul", there are loads of good sites to help out and it's super simple to learn. Usually it only takes people a few days or so to get the hang of as it's very logical and uncomplicated with only few letters :)

It's really helped me in dramas sometimes, when you don't have to rely on subs to understand name signs etc. as they tend not to translate that stuff.

I had to scroll up again and figure out what '그랜드 파더' means...i'm slow...

On a side note, why do koreans like to koreanise english words instead of using their own korean words? (Although, if the title was 'Halaboji' instead it wouldn't sound like an action movie IMO lol)

I think a lot of countries import English words into their language today. And reversely a huge percentage of English words come from German, Danish etc. and are just Anglicized. Languages have always borrowed from each other, pronouncing and writing the words according to their phonology/writing system, it's part of what makes the same language completely different when enough time passes (eg from Old English (where I recognize a lot of Danish words) to modern day English where the origins are pretty unrecognizable in some cases).

In my country they will sometimes even retitle an American movie naming it something else in English. Now that's weird LOL!

Agreed, Halaboji wouldn't sound very cool for an action flick ha :P

Exactly. There is now a term for the diverse ways cultures have now claimed ownership to the language. It is sometimes referred to as "englishes"
There are many legitimate postcolonial ways to use the language.

Ha! Or rather, Eong-keu-reu? ;)

Koreanized English just sounds so adorable. Danized (is that even a word??) English just sounds like someone trying to speak with a hot potato in their mouth, like the rest of the language. I'd much rather have a native language that made everything sound cute *sulks in corner at the fact that not only one of, but both of my native languages sound pretty bad* :P
