W–Two Worlds: Episode 4

This show blows my miiiiiiiiiiiind. Every new episode blows it up, puts the pieces back together, and then blows it up all over again. Just when I thought I had gotten a handle on the rules of the two universes and the way the story would go, our heroine does something to change the hero’s narrative, and the domino effect on his world, her world, and our story is a game-changer.

It feels pretty great to be this excited about a show again, and to feel like I can put my trust in the writer and enjoy every twist and turn with excitement instead of fear. I’m happy that the ratings for W climbed this week too (both episodes came in at 12.9%, bringing the show into first place), just so that the producers get some recognition for this awesome world that they’re building.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

The detour before Kang Chul’s business trip turns out to be a meeting with Ajusshi, who finally gets his manhwa introduction: His name is Sohn Hyun-seok, and he’s Chul’s dad’s best friend, who now runs that crime investigation TV show that Chul bought the broadcast station for.

Ajusshi is busy surveying trucks at a container terminal in Busan, and tells Chul that no amount of searching has turned up the random truck of doom from his sudden attack in the street. More than anything, Ajusshi is concerned about Chul hiding Yeon-joo from the police, and says he saw the video of them in that clothing store.

Chul realizes that Ajusshi heard about all this from So-hee, and Ajusshi chides him for not recognizing how great So-hee is. He says that everyone’s just waiting for Chul and So-hee to marry, and wonders what his relationship is to this mysterious Oh Yeon-joo. Of course Chul just smiles without explaining a thing.

Ajusshi updates him on the nurse who tried to poison him in the hospital, and says that she had no motive and nothing adds up about her—no matter how much the detectives grill her, she can’t remember why she switched the meds. Chul isn’t surprised, and says that everything that’s happening to him lately is out of the blue and without context.

Chul says that the recent attacks were all like that, even the night he got stabbed. We see it in flashback as he explains that he got a call from someone saying they had information about his family’s killer, but he can’t recall who it was or why he believed it. He also doesn’t know why he left his bodyguards at home when he was going to a dangerous meeting.

He stood there on the rooftop unprotected, just waiting, when the hooded killer just walked up right up to him and stabbed him. Chul tried to fight him off, but he got stabbed over and over again, until he collapsed to the ground in a bloody heap.

In the present, Chul says he has no memory of why he exposed himself like that, and let the attack happen to him so easily. The truck, the nurse, his own actions on the roof—they don’t make sense, because murder should have motive and a culprit, but all he has is a series of inexplicable incidents. He says it’s like ten years ago when his family was gunned down, for no apparent reason.

He argues that they should’ve found a lead by now, given that their criminal investigation TV show is really an excuse to hire the country’s best and use them as a personal investigation unit. He says that they’ve solved every other case, unintentionally earning him national hero status as a result, but they still have no leads on his family’s killer. Well that was a clunky bit of exposition (I hate it when characters exposit to the only other person who already knows this information, but whatever).

Chul doesn’t know how to make it add up, and says that lately, he’s even had the thought that maybe the killer lives in a different dimension. Ajusshi: “Are you saying it’s an alien?” Ha, that’s your go-to guess? Chul laughs and says sure, maybe, though they look like regular people—like Oh Yeon-joo.

Chul explains that Yeon-joo seems to know everything about him, including personal secrets he’s never shared with anyone. It’s as if she’s looking down on him from the heavens, he muses, but the good news is that she has good intentions toward him and wants to save him. The thing he doesn’t know is why.

It’s his theory that the killer lives there too, wherever Yeon-joo is from, and when Ajusshi looks at him like he’s a few marbles short, Chul says that he’d think differently if he saw a woman get shot through the heart and live. What, you DID shoot her in the heart?! Boy, you’d better have a good reason for knowing she’d be invincible.

What Chul does know for sure is that Yeon-joo is the key to his life—the only person that’ll open the secret door.

Yeon-joo gets a shock of her own when Chul’s staff arrives with mountains of designer clothes, purses, shoes, and makeup for her to choose from. She gasps and wonders how much all of this stuff cost, and darts around awkwardly when an attendant tries to help her zip up a dress and put on makeup.

Yeon-joo insists that she’s more comfortable doing this on her own, and the attendant just offers the helpful tip that Chul likes feminine styles. Yeon-joo gives her this hilarious face and asks, “And why do I need to set my style to his taste?” Is what I’m sayin’!

The attendant just thought she’d want to, since she’s Chul’s fiancée, and that word brings Yeon-joo to a grinding halt. Apparently he told his staff they were engaged, and Yeon-joo just nods awkwardly that it’s true. Hee.

Yeon-joo looks at herself in the mirror and wonders why things keep flowing this way: “W is an action-hero story. Why does it keep acting like a romance drama?” She presses a hand to her cheek and sighs that it’s making her heart flutter.

When Chul calls, she tries to sound extra calm and collected on the phone, but the second she hears his voice, she thinks, “Even the sound of his voice makes my heart drop!” She manages to sound breezy as she asks why she suddenly became his fiancée, and he says he needed to tell his staff something that wasn’t she’s my prisoner. Yeah, good call.

He apologizes and asks if it made her feel bad, and she totally tosses her hair as she says, “No…” He asks oh-so-subtly if her boyfriend might get mad if he found out, and she says she doesn’t have one. He wonders why, and she says defensively that not everyone needs to have a boyfriend.

He means that she’s got a lot of appeal and he’s surprised that she isn’t in a relationship, and she scoffs, reminding him of the dogs-and-cows-are-pretty comment he made about her. He chuckles and says she might not be pretty, but he does think she has “a crazy sort of appeal.”

The silence makes him wonder if she’s mad and he says he was joking, but she rolls her eyes and says she is crazy, for getting fluttery at a comment like that. She grumps that he seems too cheerful for someone keeping her captive, and he points out that she can go home whenever she feels like telling him the truth.

He says goodnight, and just before hanging up, Yeon-joo blurts, “I love you!” Pff. She waits for some kind of reaction, but Chul just smiles and reminds her that it won’t work on him. But then he does this lip-bitey thing that makes me think differently…

They hang up and Yeon-joo head-desks away her embarrassment, while Chul looks at his phone and says aloud, “If I hear it one more time, I might be shaken.” Omo! Yeon-joo counts how many days she’s been here and worries that she’s already getting used to this world.

Meanwhile, So-hee contemplates something for a while before heading into the penthouse. She finds Yeon-joo wandering around looking bored and suggests they get some wine in the restaurant bar.

Something feels off about it though—So-hee insists to the bodyguard that it’s safe, and suddenly remembers something she forgot, sending Yeon-joo to the table ahead of her. And then her bodyguard gets called away, leaving Yeon-joo there alone.

Yeon-joo sighs wistfully and enjoys the view, figuring that she won’t get to come to places like this very often. The waiter comes by with menus, and ack, it happens to be that waiter who helped her save Kang Chul on the roof the first time she was here. He recognizes her instantly, and it’s only then that Yeon-joo realizes this is the same hotel.

She makes some awkward excuses and the waiter runs to tell his manager about her, and when he points out the table, she’s already gone. Yeon-joo runs through the kitchen and calls Chul, who answers with a smile and asks what other confession she’s going to make. But she says she’s about to be captured by the police, and that So-hee turned her over.

Chul hurriedly calls his bodyguard, who was under the impression that So-hee’s orders were from Kang Chul. After being straightened out and ordered to help Yeon-joo, the bodyguard finds her and unlocks a random room with a master key to get her out of sight.

But he’s a few seconds too late, because as she runs to the open door, she’s spotted by the cops. She tries to run but knows she’s about to get caught, so she does the only thing she can do to protect Kang Chul—she slides the phone he gave her into the room where the bodyguard is waiting, just seconds before she’s arrested and taken away. The bodyguard tells Chul the bad news, and he deflates. His plane takes off again the moment it lands.

So-hee tells the bodyguard that she’ll take responsibility for lying to him, and takes a call from the detective on Yeon-joo’s case, acting surprised that the suspect was caught.

Yeon-joo’s arrest is all over the evening news and the report shows her being led inside the precinct in handcuffs, looking scared. The detective interrogates her but all she can offer is her name, and she can’t answer any of his other questions about her national ID number, her address, or anything else.

Yeon-joo sits crouched in the corner of a cell that evening, and she perks up with relief to see So-hee approach. But So-hee admits to turning her in and says that this was the best she could do in this situation, because Kang Chul can’t continue to be living with a suspect in his attempted murder.

So-hee promises her all the best lawyers and anything else she can do to help Yeon-joo clear her name, if she just cooperates with the investigation and lets them confirm her identity. But all Yeon-joo can say is, “Even if I wanted to reveal it, I have no identity to reveal!” So-hee asks skeptically who doesn’t have an identity in this world, but Yeon-joo swears that she doesn’t.

The interrogation only worsens the longer it goes on. The detective becomes increasingly desperate and frustrated, while Yeon-joo continues her silence, growing wearier by the minute.

Eventually they give up trying to get answers out of her, and she’s transported to the penitentiary. Dammit all, can’t Su-bong draw her an escape tunnel or something? Come on, scenery artist! Your noona’s in trouble!

Kang Chul finally returns from his trip and is met with a crowd of reporters at the airport. He smiles and says in a upbeat voice that he doesn’t believe Oh Yeon-joo to be in league with the killer, and winks at the female reporter right in front of him with a friendly warning not to believe everything she hears.

In the car Chul is less jovial, and when Do-yoon mentions that So-hee keeps calling him because Chul won’t answer her calls, he decides to have it out with her. Chul says he’s going straight to the prison to see Yeon-joo, and So-hee defends her decision, saying that the lawyers are trying, but Yeon-joo isn’t testifying to anything.

Chul says that Yeon-joo can’t testify, and that’s why he was protecting her. So-hee argues that the answer is already obvious if Yeon-joo can’t reveal a logical explanation for her actions—it means she’s guilty.

But Chul says that’s the kind of flawed reasoning that led to him almost ending his life—people just assumed that he killed his family because the facts they saw on the surface supported their idea, and he became a murderer.

He says that people always see the phenomenon on the surface, and not the underlying context for why it’s happening—and they mistake that for common sense. Chul argues that the last thing Yeon-joo did was toss the phone he gave her, in an effort to protect him. For him, it’s not identity that’s important, but reading a person’s true motivation.

He tells So-hee: “I started this business because I wanted to help other people who were victims of common sense like me. But you created yet another victim. That means you don’t have the right to be my assistant. Just remain as my friend. You’re fired.” Ouch. I’m on his side, but that’s gotta hurt. Both So-hee and Do-yoon look shocked, but can’t say a thing.

Yeon-joo gets called out of her cell, and is led to a visitor’s booth where Kang Chul is waiting for her. She looks happy to see him, and he smiles at her sweetly. He apologizes for the delay—despite turning around as soon as they landed, it still took too long.

He asks how she’s holding up, and she says it’s hot in here. Chul remembers his time in prison and says that summer is the hardest. Yeon-joo looks like she’s about to burst into tears, and at first when he asks if it’s hard on her, she shakes her head no.

But then the dam bursts, and along with her tears, she admits that she’s having a hard time. She’s just an average person, she cries, and this is stuff that only happens in movies. He says that innocent people sometimes find themselves thrown into prison one day, with no understanding of how they got there.

He describes the torturous process that she’ll undergo as they attempt to break her and weaken her resolve, interrogating her relentlessly for so long that it’ll be difficult for her to ever return to an ordinary life as a normal citizen again. Chul says that he doesn’t have a means to help clear her name, but he does have a solution: She can tell him truthfully where she’s from, and disappear from here.

Yeon-joo points out that it’ll cause a frenzy here if she vanishes, but he says he’ll deal with the mess since this is his world. She says with tears in her eyes that she can’t tell him because it’ll make him unhappy, and he says with a rueful smile, “I don’t think I’m enormously happy now. I can’t sleep because I never know when I’ll die. You know that.”

He asks if she’s really okay to be trapped here the rest of her life, and she cries no. He says they don’t have much time, and asks her where she’s from. Yeon-joo answers hesitantly that it’s Seoul, and he understands that it’s a different Seoul—she confirms that she lives “there,” and he lives “here.”

He asks how she knows everything about him, and Yeon-joo can’t bring herself to answer that. She wipes away her tears and jokes that a nude show would be better than this. He laughs and says that won’t work on him, and prods her again to answer.

Yeon-joo: “You’re going to regret it.” Chul: “I won’t.” He asks again what world she comes from. After a long pause, she finally says the words: “Inside a manhwa.” EEP. She said it!

He thinks she’s answering his latest question and saying that she came from inside a manhwa, but she clarifies: “No. Here. This… is inside a manhwa.” Ohmygod. Are there brains exploding everywhere? I can’t look!

Kang Chul is frozen in shock, and Yeon-joo continues that this world is inside a manhwa that she reads: “And you’re the main character of that manhwa.” As her words start to sink in, Yeon-joo spots the “To be continued” chyron being written in the corner.

This time she vanishes right before his eyes, and she reappears in her own world at the bus stop where she’d fainted, dressed in her prison jumpsuit. Well that’s not conspicuous or anything. Better than lingerie though?

Kang Chul doesn’t move at all, and just keeps staring at that empty chair like he can’t believe she really vanished. But guards come running and confirm that she’s really gone. And then… Chul looks right into the camera, like he’s peering at us through the screen. Aaaah, stop that! It’s just like he does to Dad in the manhwa!

Back in Yeon-joo’s world, Su-bong pulls up in a panic and literally trips over his feet to get to Yeon-joo. He gapes at her and asks if she really really went to prison, and while rifling through the nearest clothing store to buy her a change of clothes, he hits himself on the head and says this is crazy.

As he waits in the bathroom for her to change, he explains that not thirty minutes have passed. He drove here to pick up her purse and phone after she vanished, and parked nearby to dig through the purse and look for some sort of clue.

But then he got a call about her dad putting up another episode online, and he saw Yeon-joo appear in the manhwa again. He cringed at her nude show and yelped, “Isn’t this noona going too far because it’s just a manhwa?! Oh, oh, another kiss?!” He wondered if he was worrying for nothing, if she was perfectly happy with her wish fulfillment. But then he saw Yeon-joo going to prison in the story and freaked out, and a second later, she appeared at the bus stop in her jumpsuit.

He explains all this as he drives her back to the workshop, and asks how it’s possible that she was gone for half an hour and spent seven days in the manhwa. She’s overcome with exhaustion and says it certainly feels like seven days’ worth of tiredness.

Yeon-joo says that prison is no place to be, and that she couldn’t even survive one day in there. Su-bong asks if she really told Kang Chul everything, and she gasps, “What have I done?” He assures her that everything will be okay, but he doesn’t sound very sure of himself.

In Kang Chul’s world, the prison gets put on lockdown and Do-yoon goes looking for Chul when he overhears what’s going on. Do-yoon asks how Yeon-joo escaped, but Chul says nothing, and just continues to sit there numbly.

So-hee drinks away the pain of being newly unemployed, when Do-yoon calls and breaks up her pity party with news of the prison break. Ajusshi hears about it at the broadcast station too, and it’s all over the news that Yeon-joo escaped.

We haven’t seen this character since Kang Chul’s trial in his youth, but now Prosecutor Han is Assemblyman Han. He watches the news and says with an evil glint in his eye that he’s finally found a way to catch that psychopath murderer Kang Chul for good.

Yeon-joo goes running into Dad’s room, but he still hasn’t come home. Su-bong suggests just putting up “The end” and ending the manhwa here, because he doesn’t see how Yeon-joo could survive another trip to that world when she’s a known fugitive there.

But she asks what happens to Kang Chul then, clearly not wanting to end things here. Su-bong: “You’re worried about Kang Chul? The living people are all about to be carted off to the mental hospital and you’re worried about a manhwa character right now?!” Heh, point taken. Su-bong sits down at his computer to just end the manwha here, and deal with the fallout later.

As Chul walks out of the prison, he finally gets over the initial shock enough to think about Yeon-joo’s words. He remembers her saying before that his change in emotion was the key to her coming and going because he was the main character, that she could see how he’d be in trouble when she was outside this world, and that she was rooting for his happy ending because she was his fan.

It starts to come together in a way that he can’t ignore, and Chul is so lost in thought that he doesn’t notice Do-yoon nudging him to take a call from Ajusshi. Chul needn’t explain anything to Ajusshi, who’s already guessed that if what Chul said earlier was true, Yeon-joo disappeared into another dimension.

Ajusshi is worried that Assemblyman Han has been waiting for an opportunity like this to nab Kang Chul, but Chul says that Assemblyman Han is nothing compared to this: “The reason I exist—that’s the real problem.”

Chul looks like he’s holding back tears, and Ajusshi asks what Yeon-joo told him. Chul says it was crazy nonsense, and that he was right about her at the outset—she’s just a crazy woman: “She spouted unbelievable nonsense…”

Ajusshi asks why he’s concerned about it then, and Chul admits that her crazy nonsense explains everything that he previously couldn’t explain about his life, and everything that had no context now makes sense.

Chul says it’s an explanation that never once entered his mind, and hesitates again and again before finally saying out loud: “This world… That this world… is all fake. It’s a completely fabricated world.” The moment he says the words, the prison guards in front of him all suddenly freeze mid-stride.

OH. MY. GOD. Is this his Matrix moment?

Kang Chul slowly lowers the phone from his ear and stares at the frozen officers. He whirls around to look at Do-yoon, who’s also standing there like a statue. Chul tries to speak to him, even shake him awake… but Do-yoon remains suspended in time.

At the same time in Yeon-joo’s world, Su-bong erases the “To be continued” from the webtoon’s last frame, and says he’s going to put up a notice that they’re ending the series due to personal reasons. He figures they’ll get a gazillion anti-fans, but they have to do it.

Yeon-joo clearly doesn’t want to, and can’t even watch as Su-bong does the deed. But as soon as he starts typing the message, the webtoon image disappears and his screen goes white.

Kang Chul marches down the corridor, shaking nervously as he walks past more and more frozen officers. He reaches the common area full of visitors, and every one of them is suspended in mid-motion as well. It’s like time just stopped.

Chul collapses to the floor, breathing hard. He stares at his phone, and we cut to Ajusshi at the station, also frozen. So are So-hee and the rest of his staff at the hotel. He’s all alone.

As Chul starts to panic, Yeon-joo narrates: “The moment the main character recognized the fiction, the world inside the manhwa stopped. Only Kang Chul was the lone survivor in a world where time had been suspended—like a punishment brought down on the one who was self-aware.”

Su-bong runs around trying all of the computers in the workshop, but it’s no use. Yeon-joo stands still, tears brimming in her eyes as she cries, “Something’s happened to Kang Chul! Because of me! Something bad has happened because of me! What do I do?”

She bursts into tears, and at that moment, Kang Chul notices something changing in his world. He turns to look down the hallway, and sees an outline of a frame—like the outside edge of a webtoon frame—being rendered out of thin air.

He walks over to it, and the space inside the frame fills with a glassy, liquid pool of light. As Chul stands in front of it, the camera swivels around to the other side, and we see Kang Chul’s image change—outside the frame he’s real, and inside the frame he’s a manhwa drawing. Okay, that’s cool.

Chul slowly reaches out a hand and dips his fingers into the glassy light, and the sensation triggers a memory. He flashes back to bleeding to death on that rooftop, when a similar frame had been rendered next to him. He’d reached into it… and of course we’ve already seen the other side, when a hand had reached out and pulled Yeon-joo into his world.

Now sure that this is the portal into Yeon-joo’s world, Kang Chul makes a decision and stops to pull a gun from an officer’s holster. Determination sets into his face and he walks right into the light, without hesitation.

He comes out on the other side, Terminator-style (but with clothes! Get your mind out of the gutter!) and rises to his feet. He’s on a modest rooftop, and the colors are noticeably less saturated and gleaming in this world.

He looks out over the city and walks away, and we see Dad’s cracked monitor nearby on the roof, sitting among a collection of random junk. The screen flashes with that liquid light, and then goes black as rain starts to come down.

Down in the alley below, Kang Chul walks through the pouring rain, in an echo of the first time he overcame his creator and was reborn on that bridge.

COMMENTS

Whoa. This show moves so fast I can hardly believe it, even as it’s happening in front of me. It’s so thrilling to get invested in a drama that’s building an intricate world and unraveling it at the same time—as soon as we learn the rules, something happens to break down what we know and throw us into a whole new game where we have to start over.

It’s not only that the writing is brilliant (even though that’s mostly it), but there’s a nice synergy between the writing and directing that brings the ideas to life in vivid ways. Each world is styled differently, with Yeon-joo’s world in realistic, muted tones and Kang Chul’s world in bright, saturated colors with glamour lighting following everyone around wherever they go, making them really feel like different dimensions, and not because we’re told they are. And the coolest part is the in-between, where we see manhwa shift into live-action, and vice versa, as Kang Chul steps outside his world for the first time.

It’s really a drama where the visuals matter greatly and could ruin a great premise, and instead it sucks us into this story with trust that every frame is intentional and meaningful. That’s the kind of drama I want to be a geeky fan about, because there’s a payoff for the hours (days, weeks…) that you pour into watching, re-watching, and dissecting it in loving, gory detail.

I cannot wait to see what happens now that Kang Chul has stepped into Yeon-joo’s world. He operates by a totally different code, one where it’s apparently okay to shoot a woman in the heart, but not testify on her behalf to get her out of prison. I’m sure it was an impossible situation, what with her complete lack of registered personhood in his world, but come on—he was totally laying it on thick in prison, trying to convince her that it would be torturous in there and all she’d need to do is answer the question he’s been dying for her to answer. I don’t blame him, since it’s shrewd and it’s not at all a lie that she would suffer all the things he said. (And I do appreciate their moment of connection when he identifies with her as a victim of that kind of witch-hunt.) We just know that his motivations are driven by his curiosity to know the truth about himself over everything else.

It’s definitely Kang Chul’s relentless curiosity that’s done him in—the desire for self-awareness is his fatal flaw. It’s a metaphor as old as time—the schism between god and man is always tied to self-awareness, and there’s no un-knowing the separation between creator and creation once it’s out there. In Chul’s case it’s that his entire world is a fictional construct, and that’s doubly earth-shattering because his fictional world literally revolves around him. So by acknowledging the fiction, he’s actually broken it entirely. There’s just no such thing as taking the red pill and then staying inside the Matrix—that’s the oxymoron of self-awareness that can never be undone. So by the time he was asking, Who? Why? What is the reason for my existence? he’d already begun breaking down the barrier between the two worlds.

The thing is, in this case Kang Chul has to find a way back to his world in order to complete his narrative—I feel like that’s the journey being put forth, so he can’t just become aware and live in the real world and be a regular guy. Maybe when he returns he’ll have the same outsider’s view that Yeon-joo has in his world, where the edges of the fiction are always visible to her (like “To be continued,” for example).

There are still so many questions, because the portal between dimensions seems tied to Yeon-joo and her feelings for Kang Chul (if she was desperate for his survival both times that the frame appeared in front of him?), but how did he know she’d be the key, and that there even was a secret door to anywhere that she’d unlock? Will he have different abilities and feelings in this dimension? How will complete free will change his character, and his feelings for Yeon-joo? I can’t wait to find out. I just hope he’s not going to try shooting her again in the world where she’s not invincible! Don’t mix those up!

How glorious is it that Kang Chul is smart enough and measured enough to kind of grasp the concept of a comic character coming to life, so much so that he's the one who states it outright, and then he gets completely blindsided by the realization that Yeon Joo's not the manhwa character - HE is?

I also love the art assistant being so visibly torn between disbelieving the entire thing and being actively annoyed at Yeon Joo for kissing Kang Chul again. Heh.

Yes! I loved the short comedy moment when he was in the car because I felt like my heart was going to BURST from all the excitement/anticipation with what was going to happen next to KC and it was almost a bit of a relief to have a moment to breathe before it all got exciting again!

Kang Chul really reminds me of the male lead from Queen Inhyun's Man. They're both intelligent and consider all possibilities despite being on the brink of impossible.

Kim Boong Do - top time-travel boyfriend of all time. If you have to go into a time-travel situation and have only one fictional character to pick? PICK HIM.

He certainly handled it a bit better than Park Sun Woo (9 Time Travels) who ended up making his wife his niece. Heh. We'll see what Kang-Chul does.

Yep. He'll always be my first pick from the overflowing hotness of k-drama leads. Very smart and reliable. One to beat in my heart of hearts. ?

I feel like Kim Boong Do is someone you could travel with to 2590 or 841 - he's the Swiss Army knife of time travel companions, in that he already contains all of the pieces you'll need for survival no matter where/when you end up.

Park Sun Woo is both a bit of an ass and a little cavalier with his incense stick usage, but better than your average time-traveling companion. Though I'd almost want to travel with his younger self instead? Also, Park Sun Woo had to deal with a much more complicated and rolling time-travel structure that consistently screwed him over no matter how carefully he planned, so there's that.

No one should travel with the lady from Faith. She can help you if you get stabbed, but is also highly likely to get you stabbed in the first place. No one should travel with ANY of the Rooftop Prince guys. The girl from Splish Splash Love should be okay, though not very useful. And obviously anyone from Dr Jin should be murdered on sight.

@ Miranda

I bow to you. Especially your 1.1.2.1.3 comment, word up!

I love Kim Boong Do <3

@Miranda +1,000,000 to you especially on the Dr. Jin mention!

1

@Miranda - please consider this an electronic bowing down to 'the Swiss Army Knife of travel companions', the accuracy of that statement is killing me.

Miranda -- you just made my day and ruined my eye makeup all at once.

Best comment... 1.1.2.1.3

Lol @Miranda your comments are spot-on and just too good.

Why do I feel that Miranda's comment 1.1.2.1.3 will make it to the top of Beans of Wisdom?
Probably because it is one of the best comment I've read so far regarding a show - witty and humorous.

@Miranda
Loved your comment. Love Queen In Hyun's Man.

Yeah this writer always has a smart and caring male lead, sooooo different than the usual douchebag male lead who will warm up later, this guy tries to resolute with the girl even after she slapped him for buying her clothes lol

Hm... I'm not sure I'd consider Kang Chul especially CARING yet. I mean, he's got potential, but he did shoot an innocent woman. Heck, even Kim Tan didn't do that (Wait- did he? I've kind of blocked Heirs from my memory...)

But yeah, I'm definitely with y'all on the writer. She is freaking amazing. <3

I must say that Kang Chul's responses are quite unexpected for me - after one too many quick-tempered, foot-in-the-mouth, wool-over-eyes heroes.

I can really appreciate a male lead with a good head on his shoulders ?

0

@rubytuesday Well, Chul IS an action male lead so there's that. Action men aren't particularly known for their sensitive streak...
And I join you all about the writer. I LOVE her works (except Nine...Sorry not sorry).
Queen In-Hyun was such a gem I had to translate it myself (French) to share around my friends and family, because I wasn't satisfied with the subtitles made by fans. I guess W - Two worlds will have the same fate...

Can you give me the site where I can watch Queen Inhyun's Man? Pls.. Viki and dramafever didn't work in our country, dramacool doesn't have it.

Thanks for help.... gonna start watching it while waiting for W next episode.

The problem with the assistant is that I saw him in Modern Farmer. Now every time he comes on screen I'm half expecting poop jokes to start. Not his fault, but kinda takes me out of the mood.

People have done it before, and the posts haven't been taken down as far as I know, and JB and GF haven't asked people to stop when it happened (again as far as I know) so I don't think it'll be an issue.
The thing is, there are many countries that don't have legal sites offering kdramas, so illegal sites are the only way to go if you want to watch dramas. It's sad, but that's the way it is.

Does anyone here know the background music for ep 4 when he fell down at the balcony after seeing how everyone froze/time stopped. The same music was played during the part when the time froze during his car crash with the truck in ep 2..

Thank you..

I love that track too. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll get our hands on the whole track until they release the entire OST since it is instrumental. I so LOVE it. I get chills every time it's used. It was also used in EP 2 when YJ, with the help of KC, escaped the hospital and the police.

This drama is proving to be all kinds of epic!! I find myself unabashedly whooping, cheering, and fist bumping throughout it all - once that chyron kicks in, my mouth is left agape right up until the final credits. And then that beautiful ost. Damn, I’ve not felt this good about a drama since Healer/I remember you. So much goodness!!

For me, the best moment out of all the best moments has got to be when KC sees the screen/portal. And as he walks towards it, with that kick ass of an instrumental playing in the background, we’re swivelled around (along with the portal), looking into his world, whilst he steps out in full comic book glory. A-mazing. Hats off to Song Jae Jung for writing such a brilliant narrative.

Thank you, Girlfriday, for providing such entertaining recaps and for your thoughtful afterthoughts!

I'm exactly like you! I haven't felt this way since Healer and I Remember You as well! Both are my top best/favourite dramas!! Nothing beats these two :) Nine is quite epic too and comes close second almond with Queen In-Hyun's Man. It says a lot about the writer that Nine and QIHM came from the same writer. She's a writer I can 100% trust.

Ah, I've yet to watch nine!! *covers eyes in embarrassment*

It's a drama I've heard much about, and is on my list of things to watch alongside all the other (seemingly) epic dramas I regrettably missed whilst they were airing!!

To watch:

Nine
Misaeng
Punch
Signal

Clearly, I've been living under a rock!! But now that I'm officially off work for some time, perhaps it's time I crack my fingers and go all out with the marathoning...except, I've been told that some of the above dramas is best watched in small doses lest it becomes too much for me to handle, yikes!!

Required fields are marked *

Scrap the seemingly, they are epic and definitely a must watch for everybody (just my humble opinion). :-D

I've marathoned all dramas in your list except Nine (also still on my to watch list) and out of those I'd say Punch is the one to watch in smaller doses because it's really frying your brain with a twist happening every 5 minutes.
Signal is best watched in 3-4 days imo, you'll still be able to grasp everything without the heavy cases making you too depressed.
Misaeng is easier to marathon though I think stretching the watch over a week makes one appreciate the characters and stories more (not to mention the final episodes are movie length). Just my two cents. :-)

0

Dont worry namedx!

I am right there with you on getting embarrassed!

I have not seen Nine either! Or Misaeng! Or punch! And that is exactly waht am gonna do while waiting for next episode. Marathon nine!

0

@angieya - Thank you, I'll take your word for it!! Now to start the actual marothoning, hee! :-)

@Divyrus, *hi5* yep I'm starting with nine too! Let me know how it goes! : )

0

@namedx - that's a very good list of drama to watch. I've seen everything on the list except for punch. I'd say Signal and Misaeng are both easier to digest. Though Signal has quite a bit of twists in each episode. Nine I would say is mind blowing and requires a bit of thinking (a lot like W) so great for marathoning in small doses of 2-4 episodes. The cliffhangers really hook you lol

0

Nice selection,

Misaeng can be binge watched pretty easily, it flows well and have impressive character development throughout the narrative.

Signal, now this drama is pretty powerful, I would try to slow the pace a bit to maybe 3 episodes a night.

Not sure if you have watched this but Queen Inhyun's Man is really good as well.

Those are my 3 favorite K-Drama at the moment. W-Two Worlds is really getting up there on my list mighty fast.

0

@anon,

Yep, I've watched Queen In Hyun's Man - loved it!

0

@namedx - have a glorious time watching!! Nine, Misaeng and Signal are some of my #1 dramas OF ALL TIME!!!! They all share the #1 spot lol, I can't choose one over the other. hahahaha!!! I love, love, love them! I am so excited for you to get started!! Hoot for quality dramas!

0

Funny you mention I remember You because I just finished watching it today- for the second time. I found myself intrigued by the story even though I had watched it earlier. It's a shame that it couldn't do as well in the ratings game because it really was so much better than some of the dramas I have been watching recently.
I was thinking of watching Misaeng but wasn't really sure how to go into it... Apparently it has quite the slow start. Is it worth of waiting through the first few (slower) episodes?

Misaeng is quite the underdog series, but it approached the subject beautifully and was grounded in reality (somehow. Lol.). Heartwarming office dynamic. Try watching it. :)

HOW is there still 12 episodes left of this glory !? I mean what could possibly span over those 12 episodes when we've made THIS much headway in just the first 4. All I can say is that I completely trust the writer, director and cast. This show is like crack.

It's totally a crack. And we're junkies.

Only 4 episodes and it's already gone THIS FAR. I just can't cope with all the feels for this drama. What's gonna happen next? Even the preview for episode 5 doesn't explain anything (maybe for the best, because who likes a spoiler-preview?).

In any case, I can't wait for next week's episodes.

You mean, we ONLY have 12 episodes left???!!! waaah~

---

But honestly, I'm just loving this ride. I don't know if it's bad that I'm not quite nervous how the rest of the episodes will pan out. I've faith in the writer. I'm not even trying to come up with theories. Maybe I'm becoming a lazy viewer, but I'm just having the time of my life being entertained and amazed.

Usually, I tend to worry how the ending will pan out. I was actually stressed with Signal over worrying what will happen with Detective Jae Han. Hence, I couldn't move on from that drama. But now, W has taken over, but I'm not stressing myself out. I love happy endings, and would prefer to see a happily-ever-after. But for this one, I'll take whatever the scriptwriter is going to give me.

I'm so happy this drama fell into Lee Jong Suk's lap. I really love him as an actor, and I want more accolades for him. This drama also made me into a Han Hyo Joo fan!

"It’s a good thing I write these recaps as I watch the episode and not after already watching it through, because otherwise today’s recap would just be pictures and unintelligible vowel sounds. Like urrrrrrr and eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. I’m sure that would’ve been entertaining for all of two seconds before you needed to know exactly what happened to asplode my lingual skills." ~Javabeans

I don't write recaps, but I sure have a hard enough time commenting after this show.

Hehe, I do too. Writing recaps would be such a hard job for me--for exactly the reasons I've been describing. I get cool thoughts in the moment and then am left as a morphic puddle of happiness at the end. Okay, where my 90's babies at??? This drama reminds me of Jumanji, that movie that these kids find a game in their attic and the characters in the game come to life, including the dangerous ones, but at the same time one of the characters is actually a kid who got trapped in the game and grew in there to become a man and is finally released from the game when these kids played the game.

Could it be that Kang Chul was somehow trapped or pulled in as a kid originally and became the main character and forgot his origins, that's why he is gaining self awareness or was he really just created? If so what is causing the whole W universe to be real?

Maybe it's a matter of will of a creator? Initially the will was provided by Dad as the artist, but over time Kang Chul not only developed his own will but challenged Dad's perception of events and actively changed them. But as soon as Kang Chul became aware that his world wasn't real, any willpower/motivation to do things in that world stopped, because he thinks that his world is meaningless and all the real decision-making happens in Yeon Joo's world - and then the screen opens to allow him through.

So either Dad has to keep writing the manhwa for it to come back to life, or Kang Chul has to reenter the manhwa and give in enough purpose to start the engine again. Though I have no idea how he reenters at this point - does he get drawn back in (literally)? I genuinely have no firm guess, which is thrilling!

0

Required fields are marked *

One of the few dramas where I cannot think of different paths the story could take.

One thing though, I don't want the manhwa world to disappear or stay still. The only character I care about is bodyguard hyung, but even so, it feels weird to leave an entire dimension in stand still.

Did all those people just not exist?

0

how about creating a new hero, kangchul missing brother that suddenly appear when kangchul gone missing.
or make the killer appear with identity

0

But things that i dont understand is why would he want to go back in manhwa(if not dragged), 'cause he knows now that everything is fake and i dont think that he will be able to live inside a world knowing its all fabricated.
And also now what will happen i mean what is left to happen. It has only been 4 epds and evrything i thought for the whole drama has already happened. Now is the drama going to be based on how will he survive in the real world and with dad.. Oh god im going mad but excited as hell

0

@Aditi, I'd say that the fakeness is... subjective. If Kang Chul was capable of developing free will and agency, it's possible his friends and coworkers could as well. And if everyone in the world is dynamic enough to make it work, then isn't it real by default?

Kang Chul doesn't know yet that he's been directing the manhwa, he's probably very depressed thinking that his entire life has been directed. But as we know, it hasn't - there's something else at work here, and once he knows there's a possibility, I expect him to make the most of it.

0

@Aditi

It's important to remember that the revelation that his world is fake has such a huge impact on him precisely because his world and the people in it are very much real to him. All the pain, suffering, and hardship that's been written for him are actual things he's experienced. Yes, I think he'll have a hard time living in a world that's fabricated, but, the fact is, he's fabricated. And yet, because he was the capacity to take control of his life, there is no reason why they shouldn't be able to also.

While I do think that the Dad's illogical decisions dictate certain choices made by the characters, it's been clear for a while that this webtoon has taken on a life of it's own.

0

Iiiiinteresting. Was a bit confused by the So-hee part, actually: did she or did she not act upon compulsion from some otherworldly source??

0

I think Sancheezy has it right--what if the villain gains consciousness too (or was conscious to begin with) and crosses over (or just realizes that Kang Chul is here). Oof. Either way, it doesn't give us our bodyguard "hyung" back. When Chul said that to him, my heart broke just a bit.

0
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

oh you read my last ep late comment, thank you . . .

I really think the killer is outside the webtoon, that's why kangchul need a path to cross to end his story

0

What if, what if the killer is actually another character from another manhwa who got bitter that W took his/her manhwa's spot?
Since he/she got grudge against Kang Chul, he/she took the appearance of the hooded assassin (which is I believe Yeon Joo's dad creation who maybe he has not decided yet who the killer's identity is since there is not a single clue yet in W about the killer) and tried killing Kang Chul in the penthouse.
Because the killer who killed KC's family and the one on the rooftop is/are definitely drawn by YJ's dad...

0

(Continuing from above)
Or the killer can be another character in another manhwa who was like Kang Chul, who became conscious and cannot live normally anymore in the real world and just goes around entering another manhwa so that other manhwas' main characters suffer like him too, or her.

0

ohgod if the others (especially the villains) gain consciousness/awareness to enter the real world, it'll be chaotic... and fun (for us audience). However, only KC was "alive" when he found out that his world was fake so I'm not sure if the others will eventually gain consciousness. I hope so. KC needs Do Yoon. And I need Do Yoon to be real. lol And Sohee too.

0

Oh gracious heavens. Think of the chaos! (If all the webtoons started to come to life). I don't know what they have in the drama, but out here we've got Noblesse, and Tower of God, and Dice and the Gamer and... and... it would be so scary.

0

Don't worry, its just 4th episode (whaat???) Everyone will be back including the shady prosecutor (oh no!). The question is that when KC walks back into his world, will he take her along ? Is she going to appear in the middle of the prison again ?

Thank you, girlfriday for the super speedy recap! Oh my drama gods. This is it. Our hero is out of his world for real!

The first scene where Kang Chul explains how the context of everything that happened to him in the past do not make any sense must be how characters felt in dramas/books when the writers make them do things without much logic or motive. How much of a meta is that.

I really love how Kang Chul described Yeon-joo as "charming in an idiotoc way." I like how much of a fangirl she is. I can now understand why she has the urge to keep on saving Kang Chul. I can say that I live more in the books I read and the dramas I watch so, imagining what will happen to my fave hero when the story ends, is just heartbreaking. I'd prefer to think that the characters live on after the "The End" of their story.

The cast and the production staff really is doing an awesome job. The drama is amazing and I hope it keeps on getting more amazing. ? ? ?

P.S. I'm dying every single time Lee Jong-suk winks and teases Han Hyo-joo. How does he keep on nailing his roles??

When KC mentioned why suddenly he stepped out into a dangerous situation without questioning made me laugh and commented 'shoddy writing, that's why!' but I supposed it was because his writer is getting desperate to off him so he didn't bother with creating a background for his attack.

But God, I love the concept of having your character suddenly becomes self-aware and confront you on what you have done to his life. It's what I, as a writer, wonder from time to time.

Whenever I did something terrible I always apologize first to my characters.

This kind of reminds me of when on Supernatural Sam and Dean met Chuck for the first time. Sam and Dean was pissed off and Chuck was apologetic, thinking, he actually wrote them to life. Sort of.

ikr ? Its like the things that might have bothered you, the writer is tying them up and telling you - look i did this deliberately.

How many times did they go over the script to make sure there were no loopholes? I am in awe of the writing.

I had the same thought: If there is no context for the events that happen to him and there are no leads on the murder of his family in 10 years, then that's really pretty shitty writing by Pops. Good writing means it was all there staring you in the face if you were clever enough to put it together.

That there's no evidence or suspects besides KC makes me wonder if Dad ever intended to solve the mystery. He's been writing it for seven years and he still hasn't planted any leads for the main arc of his story?

What has this manga even been about? Using WW resources to solve other crimes and giving other people the closure KC can't find for himself probably but still bad writing on the family murder front Dad!

0

^ THIS. I also think Dad was just adding conflict, "Oh let's kill his family, make it tragic" (could be influenced by his divorce at the time too). But Dad didn't really think the plot through. And now the ultimate culprit for KC's family's death is the writer.

Though if you give me a tablet+drawing skills right now, I'll just draw the webtoon so that ASSemblyman is revealed to be the masked guy.

All that obsession with putting KC behind bars... I'm gonna start hating his character early.

Let it not be said that I procrastinate in all things!

0

I don't know how many series and year was Detective Conan finally giving us some real clue about the organization (haven't read them in a long time already), but hey I guess W manhwa series would be like Detective Conan in real life.

0

Killing Kang Chul's family must be Dad's attempt to adding more twist in the story and making it more interesting without thinking how these illogical events will affect the story down the road. I do understand that Dad is having a conflict of his own in real life but still, think of the readers. We are chewing every single bit of the story we watch/read *ehem ehem drama writers*

And, I'm still following Detective Conan up until now and there were rumors that it might end with chapter 1000 of the manga, but it's already in the 960+ chapter and I am not yet feeling we're almost there. I hope I get to see its end.

0

What @Mary said - this is exactly how American procedurals get set up. Main character experiences something horrible and inexplicable, decides to spend life in pursuit of justice, ends up solving 4 seasons of smaller crimes along the way while getting piecemeal, inconclusive evidence of the original crime, and then when the show gets cancelled IT WAS HIS MOTHER-IN LAW ALL ALONG!

And then the audience all sort of look at each other in confusion, because... okay, but he really should have known it was his wife's mom ages ago if that's true, and a lot of evidence came to light at the last minute, and none of this makes a lot of sense, does it?

I'd bet that the murders were just the setup, and that Dad doesn't actually have a murderer in mind and didn't intend to until he was winding down the webtoon. Sucks for Kang Chul.

0

The mass murder of his family happened fairly early in the manga after the Olympic win. Kang Chul spent a year in jail before being released and then some time being unable to adjust outside before his suicide attempt. The murders were a plot device to kick off his downward spiral which would make his rise to fame and fortune all the more dramatic for story telling purposes.
Given that the manga is wildly popular, the writer has no incentive to solve that crime as that would effectively end the character's motivation. It is strange that there hasn't been a single clue. Usually a few crumbs or dead ends are tossed out over the years until cancellation looms in stories of this type.

0

I'm glad this thread is right on top because it's something I thought exactly! Come on, Daddio!

And previously I wondered: if the manhwa was 7 years in the running, and the main events up to that point were already outlined in the first episode, what was going on in the comic that was seemingly being updated all the time, and certainly had man volumes?! The fact that he episodically solved other crimes really filled in that blank, so I was happy about that!

I was practically jumping up and down during this scene! I really, really wanted the writer to touch upon illogical writing ruining "smart" characters in stories/dramas. This drama has taken full advantage of it's ability to present a legit genius who is so shrewd that a decrease in writing quality causes him to question the logic of the world he's in. I love it. I love it so much.

What I also love is that the writer has set up internal reasons for why Oh Seung Mo's logical writing has deteriorated. Yes, there were issues in the set up of Kang-chul's conflict, but I'm left wondering whether Oh Seung Mo did have a plan for his webtoon at some point. His divorce + the lack of success + alcohol may have drained him of his drive & inspiration, thus putting the responsibility on Kang-chul to take control of his own actions. And then there's obviously the ensuing madness that follows as Oh Seung Mo continues to lose his control over the character.

I know right???
That entire discussion on him questioning the logic of hos actions, on why and how.
How ironic that we never have had a character who was self aware in real drama world and here, there is character who is in story within a story and is actually asking all the right questions?
And questioning the motive of every action he did or others did!

I love the dialogues in the drama! I have not seen Nine, but I loved Queen in Hyun's man which as much as i remember also had some pretty fast dialogues which explains quite a complex thing quite fast.

On a real world note, when people do stupid illogical things that dont have any sense and put them in harm's way for no reason with no valid explanation, does it mean they are being WRITTEN to do it by someone else?

I would prefer that to people's lack of self awareness!!!

0

Looking at the pointless violence and hate around us now, I'm inclined to think that a sadistic writer is in charge of us. :(

0

That's really sad, mary. But I'd just think that there's motive there instead of thinking that some people are just purely evil.

0

@mary

Doesn't it seem like all the unfortunate events have dialed up from 30 to 70 all of a sudden? Like its everywhere.
Am almost afraid of opening my newsfeed these days, they break my heart way too often :(

Dramabeans is the happy place for me, no kidding. Just to see all beanies discussing , appreciating, reasoning (even when bad eggs pop out sometimes) - just because the negative voice is louder doesn't mean they are the majority!
The world has got hope!

0

@mary and Divyrus, it makes me sad whenever people resort to violence to get a point across. Prayers for all the victims in the world right now--those harmed, those unjustly blamed, and those related to them.

0

Wow, the pace of this show is so fast. What are they going to do for the rest of the episodes?

I really like it though, it's different than other drama than can spent multiple episodes going nowhere (or even backward) with its story telling.

I figured he would be aware of the manhwa thing around mid or near the end of the series. But having it so early kinda scared me too. Like, would he be more careless in his world considering that he knew it was unreal?

This show moves so FAST and I LOVE IT. It's going so fast that I genuinely don't know what part will blow up next - it's gotten to the point that I almost expect Kang Chul to spot the "to be continued" chyron in Yeon Joo's world. But what about the prosecutor in manhworld? What's he up to? What's happening with Dad? Everything is insane and I love it because it's smart-insane!

I am so thrilled they kept the "I love you!" sneak-attacks, partly because Yeon Joo's expression cracks me up - she looks nuts and you know she also thinks she's nuts, but she has to try!

So Hee deserves to be in that much trouble, deserves to be fired, but I was really pleased to see it dealt with quite professionally: she crossed a line, she can't be trusted with business, but Kang Chul goes out of his way and tamps down his anger to communicate that he's not entirely cutting off contact. She can be a friend, just not a trusted member of the team anymore.

Given that So Hee WAS the primary love interest in the fictional world, it explains why she would take a more proactive approach to things than the bodyguard. Based on the information available to her, her judgment to hand Yeon Joo to the police was fair.

Her role as PA, friend and non-damsel love interest was to put Kang Chul's interests first and minimize potential risks. eg hiding and keeping close a potential suspect with an unverifiable identity, potentially incriminating Kang Chul somehow. It might have appeared to her that he was blinded by attraction for Yeon Joo or just too nice to pick the tough but smart option.

Of course we know that's not the case because we are privy to Kang Chul's interactions and inner dialogue, which he didn't share with her or the bodyguard. She made the best decision she could in the situation and it messed up Yeon Joo's life big time. But I don't think she should be fired for that. Kang Chul should just decide if he wants partners or unquestioning servants.

So Hee's primary motivation wasn't Kang Chul's safety here, it was getting Yeon Joo out of the house. I think you're right that her action is the result of being booted from the love interest line, but something that might be forgivable when you're the main female lead isn't forgivable when you're the sidekick.

If she's a straight-up secretary then what she did was directly against both the orders and intent of her boss. There's no gray area here, he was explicit about needing to keep Yeon Joo out of the hands of the media and the cops, and So Hee deliberately exposed her. So Hee told other staff that she was acting under Kang Chul's orders, too. She lied, repeatedly and opportunistically, to achieve a vague goal that was in direct opposition of the directives of the man who pays her.

This is EXACTLY the sort of behavior that deserves a firing. My underlings can discuss things with me, they can object to my decisions, they can actively dislike what I'm doing - but when one of them deliberately and publicly undermines me I will fire them (and have fired them). They aren't trustworthy anymore and the energy expended trying to outfox them is not worth it.

That's episode 15.

...ha, that would actually be incredibly mean, if Dad drew in a bunch of romantic obstacles like Kang Chul having a mistress and secret children and a hidden wife and a pregnant girlfriend, all just to screw with him. If Dad suddenly sketched in a four year old who calls Kang Chul "Daddy", will Kang Chul retroactively know the kid? Will he be able to ditch a child that's "his"?

I don't think the drama will go in this direction, it would just be entertainingly petty of Dad. "If I can't kill you, I'll cover you in children! Now know the pain of being destroyed by your own creation!"

0

No, I mean when KC fired her, he intentionally mentioned about just being friends.

That children comment though. Hahahahahaha.

0

You said it exactly right! She deserved the firing 100%. She overstepped her bounds big time.

But I do feel sorry for her though. KC literally "friend zoned" her- both in the job sense (she got fired) and in the romantic sense (she ain't his love interest anymore!). Poor girl really got the rug pulled from under her.

Okay, I see your point about why it's so important to Kang Chul to have people who will - regardless of disputes - follow what he says.

However, I also wonder if So Hee's motivation is Yeon Joo's well-being. In the previous episode, Kang Chul's double gun play is already extremely worrying. When So Hee and Do Yoon walked into the bathroom, it was clear that Yeon Joo was defenseless and Kang Chul had the upper hand. There's the possibility that Kang Chul's obsession with Yeon Joo was endangering more than just himself. So short of ragging on her boss, her decision was to Yeon Joo out of the picture. I don't doubt that she was sincere about trying to help Yeon Joo with lawyers.

As a Yeon-joo fan, I hate what So-hee did. But I also understood why she did it. She's a secretary to a multi-trillionaire with a murderer on his tail. They rose quickly to the top. I don't think they did it by being "nice". It's a thriller manhwa. I think they do these quick-thinking, let's-bet-everything-on-a-crazy-scheme stuff a lot. I think it's in character for her to ruthlessly turn over YJ to police to pressure her to admit what she knows and to stop their president from randomly shooting half-nekkid ladies in his bathroom. So-hee can't possibly know that truth YJ's hiding isn't gonna help anyone.

0

I agree with you guys. This doesn't mean So-hee shouldn't be fired for going directly against his orders. But, the fact is, it's tricky being a secretary and a friend at the same time. I really think So-hee was driven more by legit worry for Kang-chul & his gangster-like tendencies than just desire to get Yeon-joo out of the house. That's simplifying her reasoning to just one emotional factor that I personally think she wouldn't let guide her. After all, she's entertained his antics for months now. While he is her boss, he shot at someone! From her perspective, his behavior is inexplicable & this is actually a case when I don't fault her actions that much when looking at the situation from her perspective. While I do think she made a rash decision, she hasn't been privy to the moments that inspire trust in Yeon-joo, just the ones that arouse suspicion.

0

Eh, I still can't shake the feeling that this was almost 100% because So Hee wanted to get Yeon Joo away from Kang Chul.

She instigated the entire thing. If this had been a case where there was risk to Kang Chul, like the detectives were already sniffing around and starting to try and get into the apartment, then that's one thing. But this was an orchestrated move to get Yeon Joo caught and backed into a corner so So Hee could dig information out of her. Kang Chul clearly had a plan, and So Hee actively overrode the plan AND overrode his orders to his security guy. No, I think this was very much because So Hee felt threatened and has since the beginning - remember, Kang Chul's been distancing her from Yeon Joo a little more on purpose. He seemed to know she has this side to her.

By getting Yeon Joo arrested in a situation where Kang Chul was literally on the other side of the world, So Hee was hoping to completely sever them. And to be perfectly honest I DON'T think So Hee was sincere about the lawyers - sure, she'd provide them, but only once Yeon Joo gave up any secrets So Hee wanted to pry into. That she boldfacedly told Kang Chul that it's hardly her fault Yeon Joo won't talk - that's when I was sure he'd cut her loose.

0

@Miranda

"If this had been a case where there was risk to Kang Chul" Of course there's a risk of harboring a person wanted by the police. Anything linking Kang Chul to illegal activity is a bad idea considering his past. Kang Chul was incarcerated and released only because of insufficient evidence. The prosecutor seemed hell bent on nailing Kang Chul any way he could.

"But this was an orchestrated move to get Yeon Joo caught and backed into a corner so So Hee could dig information out of her" You seem very biased against So Hee. She probably figured the police would be better able to dig out information than with Kang Chul. At least they're legally bound to not shoot her.

"Kang Chul clearly had a plan" Not clear at all. It probably sounded more like "keep her around till I can figure something out".

"because So Hee felt threatened and has since the beginning" I disagree. She showed no clear signs of that. She didn't gloat at Yeon Joo when she visited her in prison, she just told her to reveal her identity and then she'll give her all the help she needs. When Kang Chul called to fire her, her reason for doing so was "logic". In turn he didn't question her logic, instead he argued not to use logic.

"He seemed to know she has this side to her." I agree that he's aware she'll possibly take matters into her own hands. But because she's competent at her job, not necessarily because of jealousy.

"By getting Yeon Joo arrested in a situation where Kang Chul was literally on the other side of the world, So Hee was hoping to completely sever them" Again, you're biased. Given Kang Chul's propensity to do dumb things like shoot a random chick through the heart in his own bathroom, it seemed more like she wanted to try to get work done while he was not able to commit to more dumb decisions.

"but only once Yeon Joo gave up any secrets So Hee wanted to pry into" Lol is that really a bad thing? Yeon Joo is considered a potential suspect by the police for the stabbing. She has thus far produced fake IDs and business cards, refused to identify herself, was aware of the nurse injection attempted murder with impossible detail, was somehow around on the rooftop (normally inaccessible to non hotel guests) to witness Kang Chul's stabbing. She is EXTREMELY suspicious. And So Hee being the PA of the CEO of probably the largest corporation in Korea should totally offer company lawyers and resources to such a person. What???

0

Hmmm. I don't really disagree with your breakdown of her behavior. Yes, she most certainly wanted to corner OYJ and get information out of her. And I do agree that she most definitely wanted OYJ out of the house. I just still think she was driven more by protective instincts, rather than possessive ones. Or, at least, I sympathize more with her because whatever possessive feelings she's having could be shrouded by her protective ones at this point. I do think she's feeling threatened, but I also think it's unfair to write off her actions as solely for selfish purposes when it's clear she is very worried for Kang-chul's wellbeing and has her own ideas on how to keep him safe and get answers.

0

@Chin, we clearly have very different views of So Hee, but I've been getting a possessive vibe off of her since her "oh, [Yeon Joo]'s beautiful" sidelines from episodes 1 and 2, which were barbs meant to test Kang Chul, not natural queries. So going into 4, I already had a skeptical view of anything So Hee said or did about Yeon Joo, but one backed up by observation.

As for So Hee's role - she's the president's personal secretary. She doesn't get to make the calls she's been making. Maybe this is a cultural thing (I've never understood how the personal secretary in Baker King was allowed to operate his own shadow kingdom, for instance), but in my culture a secretary is the president's trusted right-hand person: understood to be able to execute the president's authority, able to coordinate details with an intimate understanding of the president's instincts, and occasionally able to make wild leaps in emergency situations that hopefully mimic the president's thoughts or needs. The idea that a secretary would be able to unilaterally move in defiance of their boss, enlisting other staff and knowingly doing the exact thing he didn't want to happen? It's unthinkable, because it's the opposite of what a secretary's function is. A person who does things because they think they know what's good for you better than you know yourself is a nanny, not a secretary.

If So Hee were worried about Kang Chul's safety and concerned Yeon Joo was a murderer, adding more security would make sense. Accompanying Yeon Joo everywhere would make sense. Employing a team of detectives would make sense, or installing cameras, or putting a lock on Yeon Hee's door. All of these privately-executed, non-defiant measures would be fine, because they would still accomplish Kang Chul's goal of keeping Yeon Joo private. But So Hee went the opposite way and put Yeon Joo beyond Kang Chul's grasp, and I don't for a second think she was doing it for Yeon Joo's sake because of the gun. So Hee wants to know who Yeon Joo is, sure, but she also wants her OUT, and now she is.

0

@Chin, one last thing about So Hee:
“but only once Yeon Joo gave up any secrets So Hee wanted to pry into” Lol is that really a bad thing? Yeon Joo is considered a potential suspect by the police for the stabbing. She has thus far produced fake IDs and business cards, refused to identify herself, was aware of the nurse injection attempted murder with impossible detail, was somehow around on the rooftop (normally inaccessible to non hotel guests) to witness Kang Chul’s stabbing. She is EXTREMELY suspicious. And So Hee being the PA of the CEO of probably the largest corporation in Korea should totally offer company lawyers and resources to such a person. What???
This is what makes a very, very good PA: manipulating the boss's environment to guide sensible behavior and influence decisions. The boss is usually half-aware of these manipulations but appreciates them, because the PA is usually her most trusted sounding board and already knows the situation intimately. PAs can try discussion, coordination, including certain papers in briefings, allowing certain meetings on calendars, scheduling certain lunches at places where influential people will be present. But the key with ALL of these interventions is that they're soft influencers, not things that threaten the boss's position or decision-making authority.

That's why So Hee is so absolutely canned. She went nuclear with Yeon Joo, and made herself into a threat to Kang Chul. If Kang Chul wants his lawyers helping Yeon Joo, there is bugger-all So Hee can do about it, because IT'S NOT HER COMPANY. She treated Kang Chul's authority and resources like they were her own while doing the exact thing he wanted to avoid. The only way to stop her from (unapologetically) doing it again is to strip her of the ability to make those decisions.

0

Amen, Miranda. I have needed to do the same with some reporting to me and it is a logical step for Kang Chul to take.

"So Hee’s primary motivation wasn’t Kang Chul’s safety here, it was getting Yeon Joo out of the house." How did you know? It was not clear at all to me. In fact she hasn't showed any signs of malicious intent.

"I think you’re right that her action is the result of being booted from the love interest line" That's not what I mean, maybe I'm not clear. What I mean is that given her role as the principal love interest, it would make sense for her to take initiative based on her judgment. In a lot of dramas with non-damsel female leads, it's not rare for a female lead to go against the hero, for better or worse. She's not just a "straight-up secretary". She's the principal love interest. Only we and Yeon Joo are conscious of the role shift.

Imagine a world/drama where Yeon Joo was actually a lying gold digger, there is no magic manhwa world or a 'more real' world. Kang Chul decides to believe her and orders So Hee not to get involved. So Hee thinks it's a really bad idea to keep some unknown chick wanted by the police around, so she does her thing. They find out Yeon Joo was about to entrap Kang Chul and ruin his career and incriminate him with murder somehow. So Hee saved the day.

The outcome is inconsequential. Based on the information she had, it was the best decision.

Again, she's not an underling. She's more of a partner-in-crime. Think of her as the main love interest in the manhwa context for once. If you can't, imagine Han Hyo Joo as So Hee and Jung Yoo Jin as Yeon Joo, and/or imagine if So Hee was the actual lead in the drama.

So Hee's expressions and reactions over the four episodes make me think her motivation is distancing Yeon Joo from Kang Chul. Her reactions haven't been assessing, they've been emotional - watch her face. As soon as Yeon Joo entered the storyline, So Hee started behaving like a jilted second lead.

There were a lot of options for So Hee to investigate Yeon Joo without handing her over to the police - an outcome that Kang Chul expressly stated he didn't want to have happen. Even if Yeon Joo WAS a gold-digger, Kang Chul stated he wanted to protect her. That means that So Hee can try to expose Yeon Joo, but only to Kang Chul; she can try to convince him however she wants, but she has to stick to his request that they keep Yeon Hee out of the public eye. The moment she involved the police she was overplaying her hand and inviting dismissal.

So Hee is an underling. No matter how friendly you are with your coworkers, if you're the top of that pyramid then your word has to be law, because you're responsible for the actions of all those underneath you. So while I might be open to discussing other opinions with my team and may frequently take their suggestions, if one of my workers deliberately countermands my orders, that's trust broken rather spectacularly. If they enlisted others in this plan? THAT is going to make me white-hot with rage.

It's not a one-way street either; if one of my workers makes a genuine mistake, I will back them up and I will take the hit to protect them, because that's what leaders do for their teams. But the flip side of that is that I'm protecting them because I rely on them to do the team's work on my behalf; if the worker is scheming or believes that they can act unilaterally in opposition to me, then that's putting the entire team dynamic at risk.

So Hee may see them as equals, but Kang Chul clearly does not: the first time we meet them he reminds her that she has to speak to him formally in public. What she does in episode 4 is very public. He can't trust her anymore to carry out his will. She did this sneakily, behind his back, which is about as good as lying. You can't have a person like that in a position where she can use your own resources to undermine you.

I agree on everything you said on this thread.obviously kangchul knew what he's doing.the guy build a business worth a trillion so,i dont think a mere girl can hoodwink him at all.so,why cant sohee trust him to decide for himself?
If i'm in her shoes,i wouldnt make a decision for him.not in a million years.

I think one scene which everyone missed was when KC comes to meet her in prison and asks her how she is and she breaks down.

I was legit crying in that scene. She was so scared and he knew what it felt like because he had been through this madness himself.

I don't know if people missed it or maybe it didn't stand out as much. But I definitely agree that that scene also left me crying. Her facial expressions left you knowing how she felt without her having to cry, even though she did.

There's an article on AllK saying HHJ is criticized for her acting, but to be honest, she is killing it! Her 'over-acting' is perfect when she's confused and lost in another world and her serious/emotional scenes are effective down to a t. So, boo those who think she's not acting well!

Sorry, tangent! haha

But this show is aaaaaamazing!! Can't wait for next week and for more LJS and HHJ! kekeke

I didn't miss that. I was legit crying for Yeon-joo who only wanted to save "this manhwa character's life" and got sucked into this hellhole instead.

But I was also a bit impressed at Kang-chul's ruthlessness in that scene. Yes, he cares a little for Yeon-joo, and he did suffer in the same prison. But damn if he wasn't deliberately painting the blackest picture of Yeon-joo's future during that convo to suck out all hope and get her to fess up.

Even if I know why he's doing it (for truth), I can't help but notice at the same time that this is a guy who's crazy focused on his goals.

Required fields are marked *

That's an interesting read on that scene! I have to admit, it didn't come across as ruthless to me so much--mostly because he was singing the same tune to Sohee over the phone.

Through what we've seen so far, it seems Kang Chul has some major trust issues with the judicial system (understandably). I mean, boy buys a broadcast station and develops a crime-solving TV show solely because he doesn't trust the police to solve his family's murder. His official statement to the police is that he doesn't remember anything from the rooftop, but he tells Ajusshi everything that happened (so he clearly remembers). He doesn't even contact the police after being attacked again in his own apartment, I don't think.

It doesn't take much for Yeon-joo to convince him not to turn her in; he seems more concerned with not letting her get away from HIM rather than getting her to testify. Which make his later threats that he'll turn her in hold no weight, as he never struggles with the decision (which MAY be why he felt the need to question her at gunpoint, if he's operating under the assumption that she knows him so well, she knows those are idle threats.)

(Although I'm leaning toward that being more of a result of KC being a traumatized, morally-gray genius with trust issues, whose paranoia of the world around him has grown so much in the face of vanishing ninjas -- and a world that's slowly unraveling before his eyes -- that its entirely plausible to him that this vanishing girl's secrets could be both a threat to his life AND the only thing that'll keep him alive.)

But setting aside the gunpoint thing (I'm fully convinced he's gone a bit crazy with all that's been happening). His scene at the jail felt more empathetic than manipulative. From the car scene on, he equates himself with YeonJoo, and lumps everyone else together as persecutors. ("You people are always so quick when you have the wrong person.")

His list of what's going to happen to her is exactly what we saw happen to him:

"Your life will be ruined. They've already decided you're a murderer, so they'll make you a murderer. They'll humiliate you, scare you, break your spirit. After going through all that, you won't be able to live as a normal person."

He says "you." But really, he means "me."

In that jail cell, all he sees when he sees YeonJoo is himself 10 years ago.

I mean, I fully agree he's an intense, morally-grey character. And this is just my interpretation (yours is equally valid!) To me, it felt more like he was reliving everything that happened to him through her, rather than trying to scare her into talking.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree. That was my interpretation as well. KC was basically re-living his own experiences and he knew exactly how YJ felt. He just spelled it out for her since she might not fully realize what will happen to her, and he wanted to make sure that if she really decides not to talk, then she'd better be ready to face all these consequences. I think even though he wants the truth, it was also the only way he could find out whether he is able to help and protect her. He knows she's got his best interest at heart cuz who would go to such lengths to make sure he's not entangled in this by tossing his cell to his bodyguard and even go to prison. I think he wants to figure how to get her out of this hellhole, and if she does disappear after telling the truth, he was prepared to deal with that fact and whatever resulting from her disappearance.

0

I agree with you both @Beanie and @Lisa, but I could also still see something in his eyes... he wanted to protect/help her, but I don't think the benefits he'd get were very far from his mind either. If he could kill two birds with one stone, why not? He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to let emotions easily get in the way of his goals. Which makes him doubly scary when he's let loose in the real world with a goal to meet with and a *potential* grudge against his creator.

I love your analysis that he's a bit morally gray--he did shoot her and he hasn't blinked an eye at keeping an illegal gun. He's not easily surprised, and very quick to cover it up when he is. When he shot Yeon-joo I read the situation a bit differently than the recap: I thought he'd been surprised not to see blood himself and just assimilated the fact extremely quickly. He did this little glance to the gun like "I did shoot her, right?" And then worked through it all super fast. I think he was pretty much lying when he said he knew about her powers--he'd guessed she'd be special and have other abilities, but wasn't totally expecting the invincibility.

0

@mary, yes. He's coldly comforting, which is an odd concept but he seems extremely practical and doesn't waste time. He just doesn't seem to have time or use for emotion. He wasn't being cruel to Yeon Joo, but the words he offered were certainly stark. And he did continue bargaining, with the somewhat-unspoken threat that if he just leaves her there, she'll rot.

Of course, it's also a fascinating insight into Kang Chul. A lot of drama heroes go through trials, but Kang Chul sounds like he's fully aware that his broke him somehow. He knows he was mistreated and abused, he knows he suffered, and he knows that he is not actually happy. He's pretty damn empty inside, and that might be what's being expressed with all of the "she's pretty?" and "I can't be shaken" stuff.

I mean, this is a guy who clearly used to be able to react emotionally, but in the brief time since we've met him he's been stabbed, almost poisoned, slapped, nearly run over, and ninja-attacked. In each case, he's had a remarkably low-key reaction. Maybe Kang Chul's just been through so much that his emotional conduits burned out? It would match his basic setting of not expending excess energy on things, whether that's talk or reaction. It'll be interesting to see if he can re-grow those connections.

I like your idea that Kang Chul knows he is broken inside, detached from many warm emotions.
I don't think the manga readers understand this about him. They see him as a cool hero with a charming wink and good deeds. Even Yeon Joo does not see this. When He points the gun at her in the bathroom scene, she says "you're not that kind of person". He answers that "I'm exactly that kind of person". Given that he then shoots her, it wasn't a bluff.

0

@bips99 @hellothere @mary

Me too! It pulled me in so much, you could see their connection. She was able to say truthfully how much she endured.
And I do not think anyone missed it, many are still mindblown with the episode blocking their mind of coherent breaking down of scenes!

I feel for KC when he found out that his world is fake. And LJS acting was just on point when he found out the truth and it slowly sunk in. You can see him crumble through his eyes and facial expressions. [SPOILERS FROM PREVIEW] I don't think I'll make it until next week.

the acting is really surprised me. I thought he gonna freak out and shouting but what he did actually impressed me more than what I thought. He is a smart man, used logical thinking, a silent breakdown approached to his realisation suited him more than ever.
It's the silent that make me like it.
And now he can meet her in her world... ooh all the possibility excited me but he didn't bring his car T.T . He is poor there....

yeah that was a good directorial choice to have the actor play quiet despair in that moment (which ljs aced ofc) and it looks like he'll get plenty of rage screaming out next week. haha.

I hope he stays in Real world for a while. just so i can see how he'll do in a world that doesnt (literally) revolve around him anymore. where he has no fame, fortune or identity period. except ofc in that manhwa. that's gonna be such a head trip for him. poor kiddo.

Yeah,my first thought was how will Kang Chul manage without his trillions?

Yeah, his sole purpose was to find the killer of his family. He did say that his life is not that happy. He is on edge of when he will die. To live like that, with so much anxiety and history... poor guy.

0

Actually he is super street smart and savvy and I loved how he grabbed a gun before going over. I think he will be just fine. I don't think it will be too much for him because he has been through prison and all sorts of awful stuff, so surviving in an alternate universe shouldnt be too difficult for him. ?

Will that gun work though? It's a manhwa gun with manhwa bullets. But he better not "test" it on Oh Yeon Joo.

0

yeah its true. i said downthread that he has to proven to be exactly as brilliant as claimed in the summaries haha. so he'll prob adjust better than most. but no question his mental state isnt super solid even back in manhwa land. so i suspect even if its briefly he'll be off his game for a bit. i hope so anyway! where's the fun if the leading guy just sails thru all his conflicts coolly? plus at the risk of sounding like a total sadist. ljs si so pretty when he's miserable or freaking out. IN A FICTIONAL STORY! i want the real one to be happy n safe XD im not a monster i swear.

0

I feel like Kang Chul is now carrying around Chekhov's Gun.

0

my thoughts too, I loved how he went a few steps back and got a gun and then he's like alright I'm set, such determination and incredible wit and superb instinct, makes you root for him harder!

0

He's brilliant in a manhwa designed to have certain things go his way. I've no doubt he is street smart and savvy but it'll be interesting if he sometimes completely fails where normally he'd succeed.

Small things to remind the audience, and himself, that he's no longer the main character in a world made to service his plotlines.

0

@Tai and @Sancheezy

That is when I really appreciated LJS acting. He has done that screaming anguish in IHYV already, and the brooding young man in both Pinnochio and School 2015.

Here its quite a different kind of character. A smart actual genius and street savvy. With money and looks, knows exactly how to get things go his way. And the quiet despair on his world crumbling down, realizing its fake - I liked it very much.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

For sure. He has very distinctive looks, which can make it easy to confuse characters--and while I agree that some of his others are close *looking at IHYV and Pinocchio, same writer...* this is a very different kind of man. One who yes, has been through a lot--but has taken the hardened road rather than the idealistic one. He's cynical, in control of himself, and extremely creative in his plotting.

A man like that has to rely on himself knowing the way "things really are" quite a bit. (which helps account for the arrogance, incidentally) And when he's suddenly told that his world isn't that way--and in such a vast way he cannot do anything about it--it makes sense for him to shut down. I too loved the way they directed that and the inward breakdown. But true to character he doesn't give himself much time to waste away: as soon as more information is inputted (the doorway) he's thought it through, chosen a course of action and gone ahead.

0

It's a fantastic illustration of exactly how much Kang Chul keeps inside. So even though Yeon Joo knows him well, clearly he's got an entire inner thought process and personality that will drastically impact how all of this develops.

Also he's got a gun now, which worries me.

...except now I'm realizing he's a logical guy who's been living in an illogical world for far too long. And I'm worried.

0

I think KC will adapt well in this real world without money. It didn't seem like his family was super rich before, and I'm sure he was broke after his jail stay. Although life in the real world might be harder than in the manhwa for him...

I just had the craziest idea. What if the show ends with KC back in his webtoon world and Yeon Joo in hers. Except, now, Yeon Joo will be the new writer of the webtoon. She could write herself into the webtoon to be with KC and they could be together this way. She would be with him by drawing herself in, and KC would have her knowing that the woman he’s interacting with is Yeon Joo through her drawings.

Each stroke comes slower and slower as she silently fills in the glowing space: a cafe, where the two of them sit together over lunch. There's a little smile on her face that looks oh so wistful...

and inside the webtoon KC sits, arms shaking as he touches her hands. Misty eyed he swallows once and smiles at her, then turns to call over a waiter.

But, but... I want them together. Together together together!

We havent have any clue if yeon joo can even draw, so i guess yeon joo drawing herself in W world would be less likely.
what is more likely to me is that yeon joo to stay in manhworld and be with kang chul.
what i dont know, however, is if kang chul wants to go back to the world he knows as fake. Unless....everybody in W are revelated and hence turning manhworld into a real one in other dimension, free from any author but the characters themselves. Talking about a world turned upside down!

I think he came out because his manhwa is basically dead right now. He's popped himself out of the manhwa flow by realizing it's fictional, which looks like it opens other awareness... like the door to Yeon Joo's world (which I'm going to keep not-calling the "real world" until the end of the show, because I am suspicious.)

What's he gonna do in the real world, though? :/

I mean, his purpose for living in the manwha - that is, to find the killer - is nullified since the manwha is fictional. His family was fictional. His bodyguard and pa were fictional. His money was fictional.

Also, what happens to the manwha series? What if dad draws him again? I mean, since the manwha's supposedly a huge thing, the fans are gonna go wild.

Wow. This drama is just way, way, WAY too unpredictable.

If he accepts that the manhworld is fictional, then it's possible he'll just transfer his anger from "you killed my family" to "you have tortured me for ten years". I don't think Kang Chul is confused about his own viability - he has independent thoughts and now has a corporeal body in Yeon Joo's world - but that means that someone's been deliberately torturing him for a decade.

That's quite the grudge.

I'm actually afraid of what's going to happen next. Will Chul chase after his creator and possibly kill him (that gun doesn't reassure me)? If he's looking for the killer then the only one who could give answers is Yeon Joo's dad. And if he wants to "complain" about his life, well same person to blame. I don't know why but I have a bad feeling and yet I'm anticipating so much about a Chul/Yeon Joo's Dad meeting.

The second-to-last panel we see on the phone is Yeon Joo saying "You're going to regret this". Then the next panel is one of those "shocked POW!" bubbles with a lot of exclamation marks, which could either be the revelation or just reaction to the regret statement (though in-world he immediately says "I won't regret it").

So maybe? That's not the last panel, because the last panel reads "to be continued" in the corner.

It's also interesting that Kang Chul had a series of interactions after the manhwa panel's end that either weren't captured in the manhwa or are in draft form somewhere. Or they're fully fueled by Kang Chul's willpower.

Right, I was also wondering about this!! Though I do think the webtoon does filter out conversations that reveal too much (based on the prison scene). If that's the case, my mind is blown even more.

Did their talk about his world being a webtoon get to be published? That's what I'm wondering too. Because so far, we know that if it is a scene with KC, then it is part of the story. Or did I get that wrong?

You're absolutely right, the webtoon DOES filter out much of the dialogue (I went back to some of the hospital scenes). That is INTERESTING.

Right? If it were not filtered in the published webtoon, readers will be scratching their heads as to why there's this "crazy" woman who tells KC that he is in a fake world. What I'm getting when the people in the real world say that the webtoon took a very weird turn is that it seems to be becoming a romance story rather than action. I'm not so sure... Ugh it is already Sunday and I am still giving myself headache by analyzing this drama. lol

0

wow we've got a smart webtoon now. I really wonder how this works and how what should be and should not be shown is chosen

0

I kind of felt that the filtering was just part of the drama's directorial choice to make the graphic production of the manhwa easier. Picking and choosing rather than going through the work of printing up all the dialogue. I mean from what they show there are speech bubbles but little or no caption boxes. An popular and in-depth comic such as W most likely would have more print than what they show us. I feel like it was mainly a style-related practicality-based decision.

Don't mean to spoil the fun and burst the bubble of deeply analyzing what's shown in the manwha, but that's just how I see it.

I also think some of the funky stuff did in theory make it to the manhwa since the one comic-gal said it was getting cult-like.

It's like why they have announcers during sports events.

It just feels more FULL having someone who knows a lot to point out some stuff and also translate my "OMG OMG OMG OMG" feelings into something more eloquent. Hahaha

When I was about 10 or 11 years old, a thought popped up in my head: What if I lived alone in this world and every other people were fictional, and the world was meant to be sort of a test for me? And just as quickly as it appeared, I dismissed the idea because there were too many things in the world that weren't directly related to me. If it were true, though, what amazing "writing" as opposed to Dad's bad writing of W the manhwa, eh? Anyways, I didn't ask my friends or my parents, especially my parents, because I knew they would have thought I was nuts. I only began telling friends of that weird thought when I was in college, because by then I already accepted that I was weird and almost everyone who knew me would admit that I was.

Geniuses would have done better with such absurd ideas, like this Writer-Nim, by writing W the drama. Or like some (I think French or something) writer who wrote a story or something about objects having different names than those we attach to them (e.g. chair is called table and so on and so on). On the other hand, I could only tell my friends who then thought I was even weirder. The sad fact of not being a genius....

And when I was 11, one day when I was in the classroom reading something, I suddenly stopped and questioned myself: why do we read words they way we do? As an adult, I'm quite surprised only very few people would think about weird stuff like that. I mean, I know it makes me a weird one, but like... shouldn't it be normal to question why things are the way they are?

0

Required fields are marked *

It definitely is! But as adults the only answer we have is "it's just the way it is" because we are used to it so it became a habit. Just the other day a friend asked me about a very specific grammatical thing of my language and I could not answer her because I never thought about it. And reading well I guess it depends on the language and its origin. But I also wondered a lot about why words are written this way and not this way when I was a child.

This. Episode.
Holy. crabs.
How does one hour pass by so fast and how does six days pass by so slowllyyy.
So many thoughts all at once how to think idk AGH my mind is a mess.

I totes agree with GF about how everytime we learn one thing new, we get 1930581 questions in return. and I love, LOVE, how you pointed out the scene of him walking in the rain at the end of this ep paralleling the first time he gained free will.

I'm curious about so many things, but most of all... how will Kang Chul get back to his own world, if at all? If YJ's dad draws him back in, will he be dragged back? Does he even want to go back? There's so many directions this story could go, and I'm so excited to see where the writer will take us. And, given the writer's history of amazing stories, I'm hoping it's the best possible route! (happy ending PLEASE I'm begging you) Oh, and what's the significance of the Prosecutor guy? I don't think the writer would just randomly stick his scene in... and why is he so hell-bent on believing that Kang Chul IS the murderer? Wonder what his role will be in the future... and how that'll affect the two worlds.

THE PREVIEW OF THE NEXT EPISODE LOOKS AWESOME!! I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO BE HIS TURN TO EXPERIENCE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WORLD. Oops sorry for the capslock abuse. And the emotions he'll be feeling the next episode... finding out that everyone in the world knows everything about him while he knows nothing.

Also, LJS, if you could casually walk into my world too, that would be great.

Also I really wanna praise LJS. whether its rage, despair, eerie calm or being cute n playful. he just nails it. so much idk how to say life? he injects into every character. and i genuinly feel it when he's hurting and i cant help but smile when HE smiles. wat a qt. a talented qt haha. It is one of its strong points. We do not know whay will happen next. We have our theories, but then come a new episode and then something else happens and we're so mind blown. This uncertainty is what makes it sooo thrilling. And it is what the commenters in Korea are saying. The story is just so fresh and the acting is just so good.

LJS nails every single role! Seriously! Even Doctor Stranger. When he's in love, you feel the flutter too. When he's in pain, you feel that as well. He connects with his role and the audience. I am loving Han Hyo Joo. This is my first time seeing her in a drama and I like her.

Need a getaway car- poof! Here you go. Nowhere left to run- poof! Look there's a door behind you now! Lol.

can't wait to see if KC is invincible too!
And it's awesome that the manhwa stops because he has left it. This writer is seriously blowing my mind.

So all I have to do for Chul to enter the real world (not the fictional Kdrama world that Yeon Joo lives in) is find the writer for this show, get them to want to kill Chul, feel desperate enough to save him that I get transported into the drama, kiss/flash Chul a few times, become imprisoned and then tell him that he's actually a manhwa character in a Kdrama and he'll come out of my screen right? Right?

Where do I sign up?

OMG! The Matrix moment was so cool! I really love the visuals in this show, the contrast between the two worlds is captivating.

I'm almost 80% sure that YJ is KC original creator. Her dad maybe the writer of the story but it was YJ who created KCs character. Because how can you explain all the things that are happening where she is involved and just happened to be the "key to his life".

0

Required fields are marked *

i would really love it, if it was something YJ said or drew at one point, that inspired her father to create KC. it just feels so right taht she at least indirectly had some impact on KC's existence. (which would indeed make her the key to his life in the most literal sense) plus we know how much dad adores his daughter (i kinda hope we get some dad-daughter scenes soon, like it feels like there's alot there that we havent rly touched on yet.) so it could have also been a way to give her something to entertain her? depends on how young she was when he created it tho. since its not exactly a light n fluffy story haha.

Required fields are marked *

Oh yes! I want a Dad-YJ part too. In the earlier episodes, I was marvelling how Dad always found time to answer YJ's phone call. Even when he was busy trying to end the manhwa (which is almost a decades-long torture for him), he still answers her call and tries to reason with her. I'm just not used to seeing that "balanced" father-daughter dynamic.

And it gutted me to find out that he wrote that bridge suicide scene because he lost hope that his daughter left him too.

TT____TT

wow. I like the idea of YJ as KC original creator.. that would be great, because it would be appropriate to say that KC and YJ has a strong connection to be together

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think so too! Which is why, the rest of the comic world follows dad's will and Chul follows Yeon Joo's will/desire for him to live. Which basically means that, it was not specifically Chul's strong will that 'changed' his fate from whatever the author has planned for him, but rather Yeon Joo's will for him to live that allows him to live on, despite the author's attempts to have other manhwa characters (that were specifically created by him) off him.. Basically, I think YJ is the strong-willed person whose desire to right the wrong for her creation helped create the portal to help him out (If she realised this before, she could probably have helped him out simply by drawing on top of dad's... maybe)

Also, did anyone else find it cool how Kang Chul was saying that some times he doesn't know why he makes certain decisions because they don't make sense- it's like a reference to all the crazy/stupid decisions ever made by characters in a drama that make all of us either scratch our head or want to hurl something at the screen. I bet many lf the actors felt the same way when they had to perform the roles despite it making no sense.

(Actor: "What do you mean I'm going away for A YEAR and I can't contact the girl I love at all??! It's 2016! I have a handphone, email, Facebook...!!"
Writer: "that's how it is. I wrote it, so that's how it's supposed to be."
Actor: "..... ?!?" *slams head against wall*)

And now one of the characters is really "coming to life" and determined to hunt the writer down to explain just WHY they had to suffer through all the crazy stuff. And he has the power to reject the plot and change it as well! It's supremely mind bendingly awesome and I LOVE IT!

the meta...so much...meta. this drama is somehow more rewatding depending on how much fiction you've consumed in your life. cuz so much of what KC was talking about is like universal to so many fictionalized worlds. where so many arbitrary things can happen just to shock the audience with a Plot Twist or sudden tragic death. or all those needless love triangles! that seem to exist arbitrarily instead of organically. he's smart enough to note that there is no rhyme or reason to the events in his life.

It's like when the writer screws over his character just because they get tired of them (Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes!) or just for dramatic effect (every last episode time jump in every kdrama! :P)

And I find that especially in serialized works where you may have years to love characters and then the writer screws them over just because...haha, i wish this at least gives some nightmares to dramawriters of their characters coming to life to avenge terrible plot choices. :D

This drama raises an interesting questions for me. I’m currently writing a story and would be disturbed if the main character rose out of the page.
Kang Chul's entire reason for surviving the Han bridge suicide, avenging his famlies death, was caused by Yeo-Jeon's father desire to create conflict.
Conflict is the heart of many stories and as Aaron Sorkin wrote ‘The drive shaft of a car, beautiful leather seats, a fantastic sound system, a really cool paint job but the car isn’t going to move forward if the car doesn’t have a strong intention or obstacle.’
So I understand Yeo-Jin’s father’s actions, he didn’t consider Kang Chul a being with a conciseness. Kang Chul’s down for an existential crisis and rigthess anger about the reasons for his family's death.

Imagine if all characters really had the power to wake up and take revenge for the painful conflicts writers put them through, all stories will just be:

This is Harry Potter. He is a wizard with loving parents. He goes to school and has friends and birthday parties and stuff. He lives happily ever after.

THE END.

Now the most interesting things was that, Oh Yeon Joo's feeling seems to transcend the world as in her feelings actually do seem to break barriers.. Which is very intriguing considering why the comic book seems to come alive is because of Kang Chul innate curiosity and determination to live.

And to think this is just the 4th episode...

I was trying to explain this show to a friend and I failed miserably which makes me appreciate even more how well put forth the narrative and directing is here. The visuals and the way the story is presented, as girlfriday says, just suck you in.

But my mind is so boggled at the idea of what happens next! Does Kang Chul do a Frankenstein and go to confront his creator? Does the murderer even exist in Kang Chul's world? Would Kang Chul even care given Yeon Joo's father is the ultimate source of his crappy lifestory?

I also wonder if Kang Chul's character gets more depth in the real world. It's not that Kang Chul doesn't have emotions and connections in the Manhwa world but like Yeon Joo says - it's all about him. Apart from the awesome plot moments of this episode, I also love this episode because Kang Chul shows a lot more of a emotional reaction about the unfairness of a witch hunt. So I want more real emotions from him and I wonder if its a conscious choice to keep him a bit 2d (Not going to even lie. I have been wanting to say that forever) in the webtoon. I wonder how he'll deal with the real world, traumatic as it is probably going to be for him.

And I just love Yeon Joo okay. Sometimes you have characters thrown into fantastical worlds where they spend all their time denying it and pretending it's not real or asking inane questions but Yeon Joo just rolls with it! I felt really bad for her in this episode. It starts out all kdrama chaebol lifestyle and ends up with her in prison. It ma be only 30 minutes in the real world but she experienced the whole ordeal and she is still able to care about its impact on Kang Chul.

Okay so bottomline I love this drama and I am freaking out that it's only the 4th episode because wow, how are they going to top this! Cannot Wait!

Thanks Girlfriday for the recap!

I also like their "try to hold back but still cry" acting.
you know you have to endure it but you can endure all of that feels, it leaks through your lips, slip through your finnger and make a way to show that you hurt inside.

it's like taking a shot (medicine shot), it hurt, it's the right decision, you know you can endure it but you still cry,

yeah weird comparison

I love her too! She's curious, has a big heart and is provenly (is that a word?) up to give anything a try once... and she thinks on her feet. When she tossed her phone into the room my thought was that she was trying to shock Kang Chul enough to go home again--but her real intentions were good too. Both were smart and still spur of the moment. Love her!

Jeon Joo is (heck Han Hyoo joo) my ideal type! The type of girl I love the most!

Comfortable with flaws, emotions and still internally strong welled!

I really want to quote a bunch of her lines!
Their interaction is full of chemistry and wit!

Fighting for more characters like her and Oh Hae young

I love her. I love her character so much. I'm a fan. I want her to be happy as much as she wants Kang-chul to be happy. :)

She's so awesome. She's cute and ditzy but smart in ways that matter. My heart broke for her during the interrogation and prison scenes. :(

I knew I'd hate that detective's face when they focused on him in the previous ep. :<

Love Yeonjoo too. She treats the manhwa world as a real world like the way she treats KC as if he's real.

I am also curious how they can top this one. We have so many episodes left. What else is the writer cooking up? There are so many theories and they're fun to read. I started out thinking of possibilities as well but at this point my mind is just aching from too much thinking. hahaha! So many possibilities and routes that the writer could go. Which one will be chosen though? Exciting!

@Suha - don't worry - we'll catch you! All of us are in the same boat and we're forming a net and a web of support as we all fall down the rabbit hole that is W. You have lots of mind blown, speechless company.

I don't think Kang Chul's motivation is entirely selfish. He went through the ordeal himself; he just didn't believe that his testimony would help her. Even if it did, it would take a while, and she would suffer. I think it's a mix of the curiosity and genuine worry for her.

He seems pretty aware that that Assemblyman is gunning for him - it's very possible that he knows attaching himself to Yeon Joo in that world is actually going to cause more problems for her because the Assemblyman will intervene.

OH very true. Didn't think of that. This makes me think that this is not the end of the comic world since he still has to take care of the assemblyman, though it would be funny if he already confronted the biggest boss (Yeonjoo's dad) and then had to go back to take care of the smaller boss lol

The last time I was this excited for a drama was with Healer!! I'm so happy to feel this once again (the next few weeks are going to be torturous...).
I love how W moves so fast plot-wise; hope it will continue to do so!

Ah Thank you so much for recap. It is nice to see many comments and I also have thousands of question about how they going to be next.
One thing I feel from the ep5 preview is very sad. I hope Wed and Thu come faster.

So... so... so... I just get left as a shivering puddle of happy goo every time the episode ends. I watched these two back to back and whooboy it was fun.

Does anyone else freak out a little bit whenever Yeon-joo starts to narrate at the beginning and end? I mean, she did it in the middle when he found out and he went all "I'm staring at you" at us... and now I'm totally freaking out wondering if it'll go all inception on us and they'll come OUT HERE at the end of the show.

i'm soooooooooooo obsessed with this drama and totally regret starting it because now i'll have to wait in agony for the next episode each time... lol is there a korean version of netflix yet?!

i came to dramabeans right after watching episodes 3 & 4 because that's how obsessed i am with this show now. i know there's really no perfect kdrama because it there's always something, such as the middle becomes a little boring/slow, the ending stinks, and etc. So I love seeing how everything has come along within these first few episodes i can't help but be excited to see how the rest of it plays out.

As much as I love a good kdrama based off amazing writers/writing I love even more so when the visuals can bring even more life into the words than usual. I'm just loving everything right now, and it's been awhile because I'm used to being disappointed by a kdrama whether it's because of the beginning, middle, or end that ends up ruining it for me.

Also, right now i love reading others' comments and theories about how "W" will play out. 4 episodes in and i have not even 1 complaint about the drama.. loving the drama so much and your recaps! drama beans hwaiting! <3

So, the reason why everything froze during the car-truck collision accident was because he noticed the incomplete truck (dad's haste in killing him), with no license plate, and that awareness froze things?

Probably knew she was key to his life because she was weird?

Probably knew she was key because he remembered pulling her thru the portal when he was bleeding in episode 1.

LOL at Kang-chul pulling real-life surgeons out of the blue to save him.

Meanwhile, I can't even pull the keys out of my bag while phone is ringing inside the house.

maybe he knew because she is out of place.
Her identity is clear but got not reference in his world, also she can disappear with no track like the killer
