tvN celebrates tenth birthday with award ceremony

It’s tvN’s tenth anniversary year, and the cable station has confirmed that it will be celebrating the occasion on its birthdate, October 9, with an anniversary festival, which includes an award ceremony to honor its shows. Hurrah! It’s about time all those actors and producers got a chance to take home shiny trophies too — it always struck me as perverse when some actors’ best performances got bypassed in the awards circuit, while much lesser works got honored.
The award ceremony was first announced two years ago, though it was then postponed. It’s a good year for tvN to launch its inaugural award ceremony, with so many shows worth recognizing of late (Signal, Answer Me 1988, Oh Hae-young Again, Dear My Friends, Three Meals a day, SNL Korea, Home-Cooking Teacher Baek…). Although really, any year would be a good year, since the cable station has put out a steady stream of shows that have drawn buzz, fan fervor, and critical acclaim. It has managed to build itself up from fledgling station to solid competitor to the Big 3 broadcast networks (KBS, MBC, SBS) in a very short period of time, with ratings that have even beat the Big 3 on occasion.
True, it isn’t like tvN has been without its shares of flops or disappointments, but I’d say it has a higher batting average than the terrestrial broadcasters, and I’ve been a fan of the way it has taken risks, allowed producers creative freedom, and generally been more willing to go out on a limb for the sake of its content. I think its greatest asset has been attracting talent in the PD and writer ranks and taking chances on lesser-known actors — and by putting out great content, now it’s in a position to draw top-shelf stars as well. That’s what I call a win-win.
Now, the big dilemma: How to choose whom to honor? Will it be Jo Jin-woong (so deserving in Signal) or will it be Lee Sung-min for Memory, when he didn’t have a chance to win something for Misaeng? Ryu Joon-yeol or Park Bo-gum for Answer Me 1988, or Lee Je-hoon (Signal)? Seo Hyun-jin (Oh Hae-young Again) or Go Hyun-jung (Dear My Friends) or Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap)? And which of Na PD’s variety hits will get singled out over all of the others (Youths Over Flowers in Iceland, Youths Over Flowers in Africa, New Journey to the West 2, Three Meals a Day)? Will you give out a five-way split Daesang rather than pick only one? For once, I might not even mind.

I will be rooting for the Signal team and Youth Over Flowers Africa (cuz that is the one I could find subs for). Also Ryu Joon Yeol because it was his break-out performance and as I already was in love with Bo Gummie after I Remember You. Kim Go Eun was adorable as Seol but Seo Hyun Jin is hilarious, and OHY is the better of the 2 shows (if compared to Cheese).

I don't think CITT is that bad though... Well it's personal preference... But While I like OHYA, for me CITT has more interesting side character to flash out despite dissapointment compare to OHYA.

It's not about the side characters its more like who was the better actress and SHJ was much better than KGE, while I love her in chungmuro she was not that great as Seol as SHJ is as OHY.

I'd be rooting for Youth Over Flowers Iceland. Na PD kinda lost a bit of his mojo with YOFA. Three Meals a Day is good too. I am still awestruck at their guest power. Getting stars like Jisung, Choi Ji Woo, Kim Ha Neul, BoA, Lee Sun Kyun is no easy feat.

Honestly, I won't mind if they split the awards into multiple categories like mini series, mid-length series etc like the Big 3 stations so that everyone worthy of an award gets one. There are just too many of them deserving an recognition.

Wow I can't wait to see this! I usually laugh (with a good dose of "pfffft") when they "share" the prizes around with ridiculous categories so everyone wins a prize. (yes, a bit like primary school athletics comps these days) But honestly there are so many shows, crews and actors deserving of recognition that I don't think anyone would really mind all of them getting a mention.
Heck, I would even say yay to some popularity awards as voted by the general public. Come to think of it they should have a vote "Beanie Awards-style"!

Ugh, I'm not sure about this. I was really hoping this plan of tvN a few years ago was not going to push through. I mean, awards show by a network is not an awards show. It's basically saying thank you for making us money. Now give us more money by showing up in the awards show. tvN also does not need to promote itself via awards show. Its dramas promotes themselves. I have always love tvN as their dramas are willing to push boundaries. They are willing to tackle social issues that I would not have seen in broadcast networks.
But heck, since I love tvN, I will be there to watch the awards show. Now, Park Hae Jin better be invited, ok.

Oohh, since this will also celebrate the networks 10th year, my wish is for them to bring back the stars and do a reunion show. Let the cast of Answer Me 1997 present an award with Answer Me 1988. Or bring back the cast of Misaeng. If I had my way, I'll basically do a reunion of the dramas that made tvN the contents trend leader.

Should it be a reunion of all memorable drama crews that make TVN successful to show appreciation to fans?
Then we can have footages of all our fav OTPs. Then TVN brings back all fav drama moments live on stage or make parodies or interviews. Then they can have fanmeets or freehugs...
All stars can have expensive appearance fees... and we can get to see them more lively... instead of being worried about who gets the prize...

(sadly, Ji Hyun-woo and Yoo Inna are exes so the chances of them agreeing to ever work together again are very slim)

Who will Ko Dae Young (Let's eat) pair with? Lee So Kyung or Seo Hyun Jin?
Isn't it 99.9% certain that Seo Hyun Jin will pair with Eric for OHYA?
And same case, Lee Sang Yoon will join with Kim So Eun or Choi Ji Woo?

tVN manages to put out shows that have so much character and wholesome goodness that it is awesome. Not sure about others but some of my favorite dramas have come out of tVN. Cheers to 10 years and more to come!

I think Signal, Reply 1988 and OHYA definitely get something. Their ratings are high, even higher than some public broadcasts' dramas.
It'd be great if Signal Trio, Reply 88 squad and OHYA leads all come and celebrate their winning. SBS has 10 Star Awards something, I'm sure tvN could do that too.

Congratulations and all the best with the toughest job in hand. I think all my favorite shows of this year has come from TvN.
For that matter i ve seen very less of the other broadcasters, cause cable tv has been shining for me.
It would be great if they could even honor the best works in the past 10 years too in a category too.

Oh this is gonna be very tough. Every dramas in TvN is superb. They should make different categories of genre. So, I can put my list XD. I don't know, if I'm jury I'll get headache. But one thing for sure, I hope Oh Hae Young will win best couple and best kiss (if any) and Signal best drama.

The Good Wife hasn't aired yet. As much I am excited for tvN for finally hosting a well-deserved award show, I'm kinda confused that whether it should be among those shows that are being considered for awards.
I think that it's a great idea to have multiple categories to award many different and wonderful shows that tvN has put forward so far.

Yes yes YES!!!!!! tvN produces spectacular shows and I have vowed to watch every one - have only been disappointed by Cheese in the Trap for all its controversy. Miseang rocked my world and Signal wrestles with Misaeng for my #1 top shows after 180 dramas watched! Now Reply 1988 and Oh Hae Young Again are in my top ten, along with Gaksital and Healer. That's pretty amazing. Whatever tvN is doing should be celebrated BIG TIME.

Good choice. For me Lee Sung-min in Memory was the best, and for actress Kim Go-eun, Seo Hyun-jin and Go Hyun-jung were amazing.

I am so excited for this! Almost all shows in TvN are awesome. my fave among all is SIGNAL! so In love with this drama and so in love with the cast especially my Ajusshi crush Jo Jin-woong. hope he gets the daesang this time!! Reply 1988 has a special place in my heart as well I so love it from start to finish! my Ssang-mundong squad and their families are just too precious! And finally my latest obsession OHYA, I would really love to see them together again especially Eric and SHJ my OTP! lol....also can they give a special award to all the kissing scenes of TvN dramas? because they've been slaying in that department honestly! hahahaha!

I think it would be nice if they gave out awards for Drama of the Year for 2011-2015 so past shows could get recognized. I think 2011 was when they REALLY started churning out dramas.

It would be really unfair if they ignored past dramas and only focused on this year. I believe all the dramas they produced since their inception have made tVN the great broadcast cable channel that it is today. I really would like a montage honoring past favorites that were otherwise ignored because they didn't have the mega ratings of today's dramas. Especially my faves like Liar Game, the I Need Romance Series, QIHM, The Flower Boy series (FBND, SUFBB, Flower Boy Ramen Shop), Three Musketeers, Marriage Not Dating, to name a few and the list goes on ....

Sometimes I feel like minotiry to not favor tvn drama in yearly award show
The drama is good but public channel still has many awesome drama.
Tvn looked good by average number since the drama is fairly low in quantity but public drama since long time ago has many quality drama and tons of drama that just have to aired.
I saw them as trend not really a grounbreaking channel for drama. They had average quality drama but no one complaint on why they are average and not as brilliant like what people did to public channel.
Tvn drama use many good director.
I hope the award will go to many PD, they had amazing list of actor but I also hope the performance is what matter.

Tvn have average dramas? lol! they have some of the best quality dramas compared to the public channels! dramas from public channels are overrated and too mainstream for their own good! have you watched SIGNAL? I don't think it will qualify as an average drama because many will agree that it is one of the best! much much better than DOTS! real talk!

You watch signal and think you deserve compare every thing to it to make your argument valid?
I said THEY HAD - not ALL of them are average but they indeed has some okay drama. People said like they all had best of the best and none is dud.
Have you watch I love Lee tae rii, super daddy yeol, glass mask, who are you, hidden identy or emergency couple and then have them compare to as example of kim sam soon, delighful chun yang, secret, 6FD? No one did that cause they respect it.
I said they are the trend but to said thet are the best with only after 2012--- with low quantity (not quality)
They are on the rise but not so groundbreakin god level as the fans said to be.
I don't even mention DOTS,
Butthurt tvn and signal fans is so entitled to their "all over praise" content but disregard people who gives some fair share opinion.

We all have different taste. You will not get those stone from me LOL.
For me, tvN did delivered a lot of high quality drama. And they brought us this arrays of wonderful actors and actresses as well as great execution. Reply 1997, QIHM, LG, Misaeng, MnD are some of my favorite drama. And OHYA will likely join that list.
Btw, could you recommend some good tvN's variety shows? As much as I loved their drama, I rarely hear about their variety.

Indeed for once I wouldn't mind. If they split the awards to so many people and shows. It's such a big empty hole that the shows I have loved most as of late do not get any awards, and the actors all the same. Reply, Reply, Reply. You can't have a trilogy of successes and not give a trophy to it.

Who? Eric-Seo Hyun Jin? I thought Hyun Jin slightly has crush on him from the way she's so shyly awkward around him and her body language. If you watch their BTS from the beginning until the recent one, you may notice that before kissing scenes in episode 9, both seems joking around so freely. But after those extreme scenes, Eric and Hyun Jin seem so shy and just a bit silent to each other. It may indicate perhaps the real feelings grow.

I always find it a little weird to ship actors together, no matter how good their on-screen chemistry is. If they date for real, I would applaud them, but if they are just professional and friendly, it's kinda creepy to ship. Especially if they already secretly dating someone else.
I shipped Taek and Deoksun so hard because I'm a fan of the scripts, but I don't ship Park Bogum and Hyeri. Master's Sun's leads are beautiful together, but irl I just happened to know they were dating other people.

You know, I was really in love with OHYA and for my personal preference I just like that kind of bright and optimist girl and I like SHJ acting, It just liven up the mood.
I just hope that she will win the best actress, but there's Kim Hye Soo who even win the best actress in Baeksang.
Woah, the competition will be intense, right?

its tough for tvn to choose one who should get an award xD seriously all of tvn drama should at least get one award for they drama they deserve it(:..majority their drama is really great and hoping that this award is not only for this year but for they old drama too...

This is exciting! I'm going to be very honest and really hope that we could see Park Hae Jin and Kim Go Eun together again :) I still think Cheese in the Trap is one of my favorite dramas, sans the controversy and much of what happened the last 2 episodes... the characters and actors really made it special for me.
And also excited about other shows and actors getting recognised!

I read about this quite a while ago somewhere but was waiting for DB's confirmation, at the end I hope the red carpet is a blast and everybody gets something. But best couple has to go to Eric and Seo Hyun-jin, no matter how broken and in need of mental help they are as PDK and OHY, their chemistry is off the charts!

Please don't forget underrated Joseon X Files! Really happy about this. I like that TVN likes to do things differently! The yearly network awards are IMO too self serving and largely unnecessary but having one to celebrate their 10th anniversary makes sense.
I really hope also get to know the people in charge that have cultivated the network's focus on producing high(er) quality content. Congrats to TVN!!!!

Am I the only one who wants a Best Couple award for Jo Jin-woong and Lee Je-hoon? The ill-fated walkie-talkie couple who shared a deep bond despite not having met each other face-to-face at all. )': The scene where the two of them wished each other happiness and Lee Jae-Han promised to never give up on the case still replays in my head all the time because it was so touching. Agh.

While everyone nominating drama/actors that deserve awards, I imagining Kim Sohyun as the main MC for the award ceremony. Her drama Let's Fight Ghost will be ended at that time, and the girl got talent as an emcee.

Aw yeah, this is great news! I've liked a lot of tvN dramas, I still need to watch more (Misaeng...). So many tvN dramas are deserving of awards and more recognition.

I hope they have a lot of categories, so there's more love to spread around.
Dramabeans' staff is gonna have a tough time deciding who to give the awards to this year-- we're only in June, and already have plenty of high-calibre contenders.

This is great, and I'm down for splitting every award to honour their big pool of great dramas they've shown us in the past 10 years. Not just this year's or last year's, I hope they invite all of the past lead actors. Imagine the red carpet couples! Reply series. INR. Flower Buys. Signal. MND. Misaeng!
Na PD should get some kind of life achievement award for his golden touch.

tvN and I have the same birthday ;_; *tears of happiness* Some of my favorite dramas are from tvN; and it sucks that dramas like Oh My Ghostess and High School King will never be recognized but I'm glad their other shows will finally have a chance.

tVn shows had for most parts been really great ones, they deserved the recognition. it's great that the station had mainained its reputation (except for the issue on CITT, i think). uhm had they awarded the earlier shows before? cuz i think if there was none Misaeng would have taken it all. i am and will forever be a Misaeng fan. :)

Thanks to TvN, I finally found Ryu Jun Yeol. Thanks to TvN i can watch many awesome dramas in my history. Misaeng is one of the best korean drama i ever watch. And dont forget TvN makes me fall in love in Reply series (tho i get a bit dissapointed in the R88 ending, but it still great drama).
And also it has many great variety show. One of my favorite is Friends over Flower in Iceland.
Best wishes for TvN. Always make greats dramas and shows... Fighting!
Now TvN makes me addict to Another OHY... ?

I hope they invite Park Hae jin for atleast this! He deserves an award for his portrayal of Jung. I can still not get over his acting. Aaanndd can they please award Seo In Guk? Damn he atleast needs to be recognized by tvn. That man desrves sooo much than he actually gets. I am in love with his acting and his shows both of tvn and other channels. Besides we might get a I Remeber You bromance reunion!
P.s. I hope the piano is not invited for the ceremony cos it still comes in my nightmare to haunt me! #HatingPianoCoupleForever

JJW and SHJ for best actor & actress!
JJW was incredible with a memorable perormance, he is very very very deserving of the win. SHJ is the reason for TvN's Another Oh Hae Young's success, with a different actress I believe they may not have achieved such love for the drama.
