Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 30-June 5, 2016

Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho ended this week with a bang, finishing out a run where it’s consistently been in first place. Despite KBS’s pleading, it seems like it was best for everyone involved (except for the team involved in Beautiful Mind) to not have to extend by two more episodes, since Lawyer would’ve suffered for it.

While Oh Hae-young Again creeps ever closer to that coveted 10% mark, Jackpot and Monster continue to swap places with each episode, though not by any huge margin. It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out post-Lawyer, since KBS will be airing a short drama to give Beautiful Mind time to scramble together—always a good sign.

Over on the weekend, Mirror of the Witch had its odd episode preempted for the 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards, and instead aired a doubleheader on Saturday. It hit the 3.0% mark with its even episode, which bodes well for the show. Hopefully it’ll see an uptick in ratings going forward, despite some stiff competition.

I just finished watching the last 2 Eps of Mirror of The Witch and they were captivating. Hope the rating keeps increasing. The drama deserves it!!! If not, I think I will summon Hong Joo to pave the way!!! #evillaughter

Can't wait for dramabeans to recap so that I can comment there.

Hyeri and RJY are following in the footsteps of their Reply alumni and flopping with their drama comebacks, I see. It's amusing how every year a new crop of Reply actors get beyond over hyped among the Korean/international fandoms and then they're over it, and on to the next hype train in less than six months after the drama is over.

I definitely see RJY having a potentially successful film career in Chungmuro though, and doing interesting character pieces. Hyeri needs to learn how to act beyond playing herself, which is basically what she did in Reply.

Exarctly!
I was really shipping the noona-dongseng angle a few weeks back because I have a not-so-minor crush on Ha-neul (okay, okay KMH), but Hyeri's deficiencies makes me not care for that anymore. Since it's very likely the GR-SH pairing will happen, I actually feel bad for JS! Ugh. What's more, her "acting" seems to have spread. So many other (bonding/emotional) moments that was meant to elicit The Aww felt forced, now false.
Couldn't get into Lucky Romance, though I loved HJE (SWP), LSH (KofHS), and LCA (FBRS) in other rom-coms.

I wouldn't call Lucky Romance a flop yet though. They still have a chance to rise. Unfortunately, they suffered from a bad first episode that didn't live up to expectations. The subsequent episodes have been much, much better and hopefully they can get the buzz going again.

Park Bo Gum came to Reply after I remember You, he had already proven his acting skills by then. RJY is fantastic too just not so lucky with romance drama. Hyeri, there's another one from her girl group crushing it in a weekend drama and she still is stuck being the same deer in the headlight character with her never changing expression. She needs to learn. Small roles to get better than take on the huge ones. Such a miscast.

Its not about acting skills, RJY, Eunji, etc can act. Its the reply jinx on actors whose next project fails, Eunji, Yoo Yeon Seok, Go Ara, Hyeri, Ryu Jun Yeol all have had flop projects right after their big hit in Reply series.

It does seem like a jinx. Eunji for example - she is a good actor & sassy go go was a legit good show but the ratings were miserable. i'm worried abt park bo gum now

Required fields are marked *

But Eunji's next project after R97 was TWTWB, which was pretty successful, no? Granted, she was the second lead, but I don't think that there's a real jinx to worry about. It seems more like Reply casts so many "unknown" actors that their companies don't quite know how to capitalize on the success. PBG seems like he's in good hands with Blossom.
(Also, Sassy Go Go was super unfortunate, but whoever gave them that timeslot should be fired. A school drama's target audience is the teenagers, so why would you plan a drama during high school's most important exams? Sigh.)

haena

As you said, she was the second lead in TWTWB, literally anyone else could have played her role and it wouldn't have changed the ratings or critical reception of the drama, in fact I think I remember people saying she didn't fit the role iirc.

Her two dramas so far where she was actually the lead, Trot Lovers and Sassy Go Go, did flop. It's not that the Reply actors have flop comebacks, it seems like they don't have successful dramas or films at all after it's over, with a few exceptions of course.

I need a reunion project for Park Bogum and Seo Inguk!

How is Lucky Romance flopping tho? I mean dont get me wrong, it has alot of flaws (altho I still enjoy it) but ratings wise its totally holding its own against the competition. a flop would be pulling in ratings like Moorim School did a while back. (LR is also doing about the same and occasionally better than Jackpot and Monster do on M/T.) but yeah regardless of how you feel about the drama personally. the facts are, its not flopping. its not a ratings smash either but we cant all be Descendants of the Sun haha.
(I have no opinions on Hyeri as I have never seen her in anything but by the above metric, her show isnt exactly flopping either tbf)

Because the ratings are miserable and dropping? It did start in double digits after all. And the reviews aren't good? And both leads came off massive hit dramas? It's a flop even without the cast, but considering the cast it's even more of a flop.

Required fields are marked *

@Tai Yeah the only people calling Entertainer and LR flops are people that were expecting too much to begin with. Entertainer's ratings have been pretty consistent and LR has so much room for improvement - of course it could also get worse but let's not wish for that. Cantabile or Hyde is what you'd call a flop.

The "hype-machine" has little to do w/ whether their next project (or the next or the next) becomes a hit.

What changes is that they now get offered lead roles (or at least major supporting roles in an ensemble).

Most actors would be very fortunate to be in a couple of hits during the course of their careers.

Jeon Ji-hyun went years after MSG until she had another hit - nonetheless, she kept getting lead roles and CF offers during that time.

And I don't know about Reply 88 but Signal's record will be easily broken by the end of the run.

I love that OHYA is pulling the same numbers on a cable network that their broadcast drama competition is pulling. tbh in some cases better numbers. proof that Quality trumps all.

I was also surprised that Noodle beat Lucky Romance and Entertainer on the second night, particularly since Noodle is the complete opposite of those two dramas. It is serious, dark, and depressing. But it is also a quality program, intriguing in its own way. I jumped a couple of its episodes but got back to it this week and enjoyed it more than the Entertainer and Lucky Romance episodes.

Happy Home uneven ep actually increase by 0.1 (yaaai)
Hope it get better tonight

Although I really enjoy the main story and the angst
I get why not a lot of people can enjoy the other story
The Happy Home restaurant is such a mess that make me think it has no relation with Hae Ryung story.
I haven't watch the newer ep but I really hope she will be with Seo Ji Geon at the end

Still, Lee Sang woo is the man....
I kinda hope he take a break though, Happy Home actually start right after All about my mom ended.
But I am okay with him on the screen....

ques abt the ratings:

i know for cable hitting even 5% is super good. But what is the % for the big 3 ?

Since lucky romance @ 8% is considered a flop, what rating does a show (on KBS/MBC etc) need to achieve to be considered respectable ????

0

Required fields are marked *

I think for shows airing on KBS SBS or MBC hitting double digits is a sign that its doing well

0

Required fields are marked *

The ratings for the Big 3 have been dropping in recent years, so I wouldn't necessarily say that 8% is a huge flop. But around 12% would be pretty okay these days I guess? Considering that JDH is not even at 20% and it's considered to be really good for now.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

15% is good, 20% is a hit.
Usually shows that end at or close to 20% are considered hits, like Secret, Neighbourhood Lawyer Jo Deul Ho, She Was Pretty, Yong Pal and Remember-War of the Sun. Such shows usually bag a lot of awards too.

Kill Me Heal Me had average ratings (below 10%) last year, but still won a few awards. I was glad Ji Sung got the Daesang, i was willing to bet that he wouldnt get it because of average ratings despite pitting in such a great performance.

I could care less about ratings though. Some of my favourite shows had poor to average ratings - I Remember You, Sassy Go Go, Marriage Not Dating, Come Back Mister, Healer, Kill Me Heal Me to name a few. The only time i bat an eyelash is when a great show with good performances goes unnoticed due to poor ratings, for example, I Remember You.

MnD is on cable or do u mean it had bad ratings for a show on tvn?
and wow Healer had mediocre ratings? it was so much fun tho, it seemed like it had all the ingredients to pull in a good sized audience. action, romance, humor and a decent plot to boot. huh. KMHM was also lots of fun but the premise sounded so bonkers im not surprised it didnt get enough love in the ratings, tho those are usually just the on air/first run ratings and dont take into account viewing on other devices (afaik). so i suspect a few of these (and the ones running now too) have better ratings than what was listed at the time. but who knows lol.

Required fields are marked *

Healer was slayed by Punch. Just a case of bad luck and timing I believe, as what happened with Come Back Mister and the storm that was DOTS.

Was MND a hit? Oh my bad. I remember engaging in discussions at that time where people kept putting MND down because Emergency Couple pulled double ratings at the same time slot just months before (I think there was a show in between them) But Emergency Couple doesn't hold a candle to MND IMO, so ratings should never be an indicator of a good show.

Thanks guys ... Ratings are confusing... i'll second you - some of my fav shows have horrid ratings. Healer for eg, i picked up bec of 5 star reviews all over the net but rating wise it was a disappointment.

... The same problem we have in our tv industry. The small sample size that ratings use is just completely flawed

0

Required fields are marked *

8% is your run of the mill average ratings. It's hardly considered a flop. Anything 6% and below is a flop. Getting 10% to 20% makes your show a hit and anything above that is considered a home-run, worthy of getting talked about months or even years after the show ended.

It's already stopped Flower in Prison from climbing up, which bodes well in a zero-sum game. I am sooo glad that cable shows that are being produced with high quality are getting more recognition. Cue: Oh hae young :*... As for the big three ratings have been dropping down and sadly for some great dramas like I remember you (which was fantastic!), healer etc.... I don't know it seems they have run out of creativity. I found the drama strangely addictive and I find that I can't wait until Wednesdays, in reality Thursday (since Viki's subs for that drama are really slow and DramaFever doesn't release the drama until Thursday) and Fridays. But I am glad I have a drama to eagerly anticipate each day of the week. OHYA for Mondays and Tuesdays, Noodles for Wednesdays and Thursdays, MotW for Fridays and Saturdays. And Five Children and Beautiful Gong Shim for Saturdays and Sundays. It's been a great drama season :-)

Dear my friends is so realistic that every episode make me reflect back at my life...like that saying at the end of ep 3 'every one has a time limit'.As wan looks at the wall quote,we realize it's not just about the old mothers/grannies..rather it's giving us the reality check on face when we forget how each and every minute is passing, and we could either keep living,be dead at seventies or be paralyzed with no choice left.I 'loove' this drama, and though this drama is last one in my show list each time, but then I come back to these little realizations like I should at the end of a long day.Instead of kdrama bickering tropes,we get here a woman who's spitting at her husband's drink,or we see hitting on women in church/bus stops like conventional kdramas, instead the couples are some seventy yrs old.

Following cable dramas is the best because if they don't do that well it's just kind of, "Ah well, it's cable so it's fine" and then if they do better than expected you get super proud and happy.

With Big 3 dramas if you're raking in only 5% it's a sad day haha.

I'm glad Noodles is improving in its ratings. It still has 8 more episodes to go so I imagine it still has room to pick up more viewers. If it's increasing in the ratings, it means that more viewers are beginning to appreciate the drama. It's the best drama in its time slot in terms of quality, it far exceeds its competitors.

I love Five Children as well and I'm glad it's leading the pack in the weekend dramas. KBS should be proud. One thing I love about that drama is the lack of true villains . There are no evil people, just human beings at cross purposes with different intentions, although they all mean well. It really is a slice of life family drama and so realistic and enjoyable, small wonder its leading in the ratings.

I agree, there is plenty of conflict just from the clash of traditions. Of course in the US almost no one would bat an eye at two people with kids from different marriages getting married (Hello Brady Bunch from the 70s!) but I guess it's a bitter pill in modern Korea.

I am still dying from the love square that nobody realizes they're in. I'm glad Kim Sang Min (Sung Hoon) finally just caught on to how awkward and shy the object of his affections is. I'm not sure what will be funnier - when he and his brother Kim Tae Min realize they're in a love square, or when Team Leader Lee discovers his baby sister has the temperamental superstar athlete wrapped around her finger!

I liked the part where Team Leader Lee was taking care of Manager Ahn's son when he twisted his ankle at the match. I ESPECIALLY liked how he told the kids that the match was for fun and pushing past an injury to compete was totally the wrong move. And then gave the kid a piggy back ride out of there. That was so sweet! He's gonna be a great dad to all 5 kids.
