Con artists and civil servants team up in Police Unit 38
by tineybeanie
A changeup has been announced, and now we will be able to enjoy Seo In-gook’s (I Remember You) charismatic charm starting one day earlier. Although originally planned as a Saturday-Sunday drama, OCN’s new cop comedy drama Police Unit 38 will now be airing on Friday-Saturday instead.
In it, Seo In-gook plays the glib professional swindler Yang Jung-do who lives with this cynical view that money runs the world. Tough-looking Ma Dong-seok who played a mobster in OCN’s other successful procedural drama Bad Guys is the timid-hearted but honest and hard-working tax agent Baek Sung-il for Police Unit 38. SNSD’s Sooyoung (My Spring Days) stars as his right-hand woman, the ethically-driven and morally-outstanding Chun Sung-hee.
The motto of the tax squad is: “While anyone can be born with a golden spoon or a dirt spoon, taxes should be paid by all.” Unfortunately, they aren’t really successful at getting tax evaders to pay their fair share at least until Yang Jung-do comes around. Yang proposes that they con rich tax evaders into paying their dues, with him getting a hefty commission. From the teasers, it seems like we’re going to get a drama full of comedic caper-heist antics, which is now totally going to add a bright note to my weekends. There’s even a full team of criminal specialists that will round out the unit, including a genius hacker, sexy gold-digger, bank account forger, and financial investor.
This drama really challenges the viewers to think about what is right and wrong. If you get results, do the methods that get you there matter? Do ends really justify the means? The plot actually reminds me a lot of the Japanese drama Kurosagi that starred Yamashita Tomohisa as a “black swindler” who only swindles other swindlers. Judging from his past works like Bad Guys and Vampire Prosecutor, I think that the writer for Police Unit 38 will create a thoughtful story to explore these themes.
Police Unit 38 premieres this week on Friday, June 17.

Do you guys ever cringe whenever there is a sexist dialogue in a drama? I mean I am sure there must be many feminists here, right? I am one too, but what do you guys do if it happens?

June 15, 2016 at 4:30 PM
Frankly, it's something I've become used to. It bothers me but as long as there aren't too many I tend to let it go. If I let it bother me too much then I won't be able to enjoy 95% of dramas, haha.
I think you have to be able to criticize something you love, but for me, unless that something clearly crosses my own personal line/threshold, I still let myself enjoy it. This goes for any form of entertainment, not just dramas. You can (and should) acknowledge its faults without having to then hate everything about it.
Why? Was something sexist said in one of the trailers?

Agree with Mindy. The amount of dramas (or indeed any kind of TV show or movie, Korean or otherwise) with overall female characterization, plot and dialogue that I as a feminist would put my stamp on can be counted using only one hand. And as a lit-major I'm constantly forced to reading stuff that is sexist whether in a slight or major manner. If you're just watching for entertainment purposes, the trick is to acknowledge those flaws, and whatever other flaws there might be, while still choosing to focus on the positives.
The entertainment industry and its products can be incredibly sexist, but those products might still be enjoyable or interesting for other reasons. It can get to be too much though and I don't have any qualms dropping a show if it's sexist, racist or otherwise prejudiced all the time; I'll then give it some episodes and drop it if it continues. And if the "-ism" it displays isn't because of ignorance, but downright hateful, I'll drop it like it's on fire lol, but haven't had that happen yet. I guess in the end only you can know what the limit is for you?

June 15, 2016 at 5:12 PM
Yep, I'm a Spanish Language & Literature minor and have had to read countless novels and watch countless movies with poor and sexist female characterization. We acknowledge it in the class most of the time but it does get tiring. The last class I took was about detective, crime, and thriller novels and films and the sad attempts at writing female characters (or complete lack of female characters at all) in some of them make lots of Kdramas look like feminist material. Out of the 7 novels and 5 films we watched, only one film and one novel passed the Bechdel test. Of course that isn't and shouldn't be used as the only measure of the importance of female characters in a medium, but it said a lot.
Completely agree with "in the end only you can know what the limit is for you".

I have made peace with some of it. Unless it is too extreme (which is in 100% of my country's tv shows), i realise that if i expect much i won't be able to enjoy any tv
Thats why i watch Zero tv of my country.
But i do worry that what affect does it have on the younger (teens mostly) girls. I read alot. And that shaped me a lot.
But what about teenagers who think all the wrist grabbing, forced kissing, tolerating verbal abuse is "hot" . Not to mention the thousand more subtle nonsense like girls should always do the cooking/cleaning, career oriented girls end up lonely, SIL is treated like a king while DIL is humiliated and questioned at every turn etc etc ...
I worry for my kid sister

I read a lot of books when I was younger that had women who were competent or at least tried. I think that helped me so I made sure my daughter also had some strong females in her books. I also make sure to discuss ( she says lecture) music lyrics, movies etc... I hope you can do the same for your kid sister. I'm curious as to where you are when you say 100% of your country's tv shows are like that. I'm in the US. Stay strong. It's worth it.

I cussed a lot more at the beginning dialogue of Fiddler on the Roof that I went to see over years few days ago. that was serious male-worshipping bu*****t. like marriage is the only goal for women. even if they have their own dreams at first.
I do like Gong Shim cause she speaks her mind and has no reserve in front of people who think they are high and mighty.

Am I the only one here for Ma Dong Seok? It will be such a kick to see him in comedy plus is he going to be a teddy bear?
I was less than impressed with Seo In Gook in I Remember You. He wasn't very good in scenes which required more complex and deeper emotions. His character was someone who couldn't emote well due to his childhood trauma. It was not an easy role for him. He's looking way better in these teasers. I think he should be good in comedies.
Looking forward to this :)

Totally can't wait for his new drama to aired, and I have yet need to watch I Remember You to further solidify my growing heart for him!

I came back here since there's no recap yet. This got me hooked. The scamming is not very complicated that it sounds convincing and relatable to me. I quote Soo Young's character, "It's alright to get scammed at least once, it tells you about your place." There's also a lecturer who once told in his seminar that, if the earning or profit is too great a deal, you won't ever see it happen.

I came back here because I need to vent too. That was an exhilarating first two episodes and I frig forgot my Stoompi password. No justice.
Just like the show. I'm loving the theme, the right amount of rush, (sarcastic-not-slapstick) comedy, and it's not too much of a thinker but it's entertaining and there's still enough material to get hooked on and just the right amount of bait to keep me curious about the next episode. I was so entertained, I want the next episode pronto all in the spirit of a continued weekend escapism.
But seriously. And SEOINGUK is sizzling. That CAR CHASE. And Ma Deong Seok being all Baymax-ish and then Grizzly. I like this show. Perfect weekend unwinder.
