52nd Baeksang Arts Awards: TV Section
by girlfriday
The 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards ceremony was held on June 3, 2016 to award the biggest projects of the past year in film and television. We’re trying something new this year and breaking up the awards post into two sections, because these things just get insanely long, and we don’t want anyone getting scrolling-induced injuries. And because the Baeksangs already split their awards into film and TV, that’s how the two posts are divided. Here’s the other half: 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards: Film Section.
The Baeksangs are among the most prestigious awards in film and television, and one of the rare ceremonies that actually looks at the entire drama landscape (including cable stations) when selecting its winners, which gives the trophies an industry cache that an end-of-year KBS/MBC/SBS award can’t. Whether or not I agree with the winners from year to year, it’s the set of drama awards that actually tries to award the best of the best, and that makes it the highlight of the awards season, even if it is the lone ceremony held in the spring/summer.
This year the Daesang (Grand Prize) went to a project rather than an actor or director — KBS’s mega-hit Descended From the Sun walked away the big winner of the night, with its stars each taking home popularity awards and Global Star awards. I get why Descended was awarded, since that show was such a global phenomenon, though it kind of takes the steam out of tvN’s Signal winning Best Drama… which kind of makes it second-best drama, which is just not true.
But hey, Signal’s writer Kim Eun-hee won for best screenplay, and Kim Hye-soo took home the top actress award for her performance, so it got plenty of recognition. Yoo Ah-in won the top actor award over fellow nominees Jo Jin-woong, Song Joong-ki, Namgoong Min, and Joo-won, which was a bit of a surprise (I actually expected him to win in the film section instead); and Ryu Joon-yeol and Kim Go-eun each took home New Actor awards (yay!). I also clapped to see that King of Masked Singers won as best variety program, because I am inexplicably addicted to that show. Okay, on to the winners and the red carpet!
WINNERS LIST: TV SECTION
Daesang: Descended From the Sun
Best Drama: Signal
Variety Program: King of Masked Singers
Educational Program: Examination
Directing: Shin Won-ho (Answer Me 1988)
Top Excellence, Actor: Yoo Ah-in (Six Flying Dragons)
Top Excellence, Actress: Kim Hye-soo (Signal)
New Actor: Ryu Joon-yeol (Answer Me 1988)
New Actress: Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap)
Variety, Male Performer: Kim Gu-ra
Variety, Female Performer: Kim Sook
Scriptwriting: Kim Eun-hee (Signal)
Popularity Award, Actor: Song Joong-ki (Descended From the Sun)
Popularity Award, Actress: Song Hye-gyo (Descended From the Sun)
InStyle Award: Park Bo-gum, Bae Suzy
iQiyi Global Star Award: Song Joong-ki, Song Hye-gyo
The night’s big winners, Descended From the Sun’s Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-gyo, who look about as perfect as can be in all-black and all-white. They look like they’re arriving for their wedding, and the effect is flawless. Like we expected anything less, right?
Yoo Ah-in bested his buddy Song Joong-ki for the Top Excellence award for his performance SBS’s epic sageuk Six Flying Dragons, and looks fantastic. Sometimes I question Yoo Ah-in’s fashion taste, but in a tux on the red carpet, he is always stunning. Between the Baeksangs and the Blue Dragons, Yoo Ah-in basically dominated film and TV this past year. Going off to army with one trophy for The Throne/Sado and another for Six Flying Dragons is pretty much like winning the lotto. Twice.
Six Flying Dragons co-star Byun Yo-han, who still insists on having that hair. I miss his scruffy warrior look, but I love him all the same. He was nominated in the New Actor category, even though he’s not really new.
I’m frankly a little heartbroken that Jo Jin-woong didn’t win Best Actor for Signal, because he was just so good. He was nominated in the film section as well, for his supporting role in Assassination, but didn’t take home any trophies. There’s always next year, and he’ll probably have another fifteen projects to choose from by then.
Kim Hye-soo went with a black mermaid gown and cape-jacket to pick up her Top Excellence award for her performance in Signal. I think I prefer her usual sexy va-va-voom dresses to this look, but I’m just happy she won in the category, because she was aces.
WHYYYYYYY, Kim Go-eun, whyyyyyy. You are so young and beautiful. Why are you wearing this frumpy dress, and with those shoes? It makes me sad because I adore her and I’m so happy for her win, but that dress needs to go.
It’s so cute to see Kim Go-eun’s Cheese in the Trap co-star Lee Sung-kyung cheering for her win, especially when their characters were so antagonistic towards each other in the drama, and Lee Sung-kyung was a fellow nominee in the New Actress category for Queen’s Flower. Lee looks stunning on the red carpet in a sheer white gown (with stars!) and a simple headband. Her makeup is perfect, and the overall effect is somehow sexy and sweet, all at once.
Joo-won was nominated for Yong-pal, and looks poised on the red carpet in a classic tux. Like he always does, every time. I think I prefer his hair coiffed up though, because those are the times I look at his photos and go, “Woooooooooow.”
Hyeri was nominated in the New Actress category for Answer Me 1988, and looks pretty in a sleek ponytail and white gown. I don’t love the dress — it’s nice, and it fits perfectly, but there’s nothing special about it. I want to see her in red, or yellow, or pink, to suit her sunny personality.
Park Bo-gum looks like he’s adopting Lee Jung-jae’s style of fancy red carpet jackets, which is certainly fine by me. He was also nominated in the New Actor category, though his was actually for the movie Chinatown. It just seemed weird not to include his photos with the rest of the Answer Me gang though, since they’re kind of a set.
Ryu Joon-yeol took home the New Actor trophy for Answer Me 1988, and looks adorably awkward in his photos. The moment his name was announced is my favorite shot though, with his co-stars all cheering and hugging around him, and Mom Ra Mi-ran standing by proudly like she’s about to cry. Love.
Go Kyung-pyo, what is that on your head? Did you lose all your hair in a freak accident and paint some on with a spray can just before the ceremony? He was also nominated in the New Actor category for Chinatown alongside Park Bo-gum.
Lee Dong-hwi (nominated for New Actor, Answer Me 1988) is his usual eccentric self. He’s wearing a cummerbund, but the effect is actually like he managed to turn a tux into high-waisted ajumma pants. It seems like the kind of thing he’d do on purpose though.
Aw, Ahn Jae-hong looks so dapper! I love this. He had to wear the frumpiest outfits of all the kids in Answer Me 1988, but he cleans up so nicely. The navy tux is my favorite of the night.
Lee Jong-seok, who’ll be back with fantasy drama W—Two Worlds later this year, came to present an award alongside Chinese actor Wu Xiubo (Finding Mr. Right 2).
Kim Hyun-joo was nominated for Best Actress for her SBS melodrama I Have a Lover. The sleek, sexy black dress is a great look for her; I love the blingy detailing and the cut.
Kim Min-seok (Descended From the Sun) looks like an excited kid at a candy store. It’s probably his first red carpet, and it’s so cute to see him giddy and nervous.
Gong Hyun-joo (Falling for Innocence) looks nice, though underdressed for the event. It seems like an outfit you’d wear to a friend’s wedding in the daytime. She presented an award with Lee Ki-woo (Memory). I just want to comb his hair out of his face.
Comedienne Hong Yoon-hwa looks adorable, though the outfit looks more like it’s for a tween. Cutesy seems to be her concept all the time though.
Fellow gagwoman Jang Do-yeon mugs for the cameras. Repeatedly. Somebody likes attention.
Variety mainstay and nominee for Male Variety Performer Jung Jun-ha, looking awkward on the red carpet:
Kim Sook, who won the Female Variety Performer award, with Male Variety Performer nominee Yoon Jung-soo. Thumbs up for both of their outfits. She looks especially good in the sleek black dress.
Gagman Kim Young-chul, who was also nominated, making that face he always makes:
Another comedienne and nominee, Oh Na-mi, whose dress looks pretty in motion but sags in weird places when standing still.
Fellow variety nominee Park Na-rae opts for a vampy look, which I don’t think works in her favor. It’s all wrong, and I really wish that lipstick color had stayed in the 90s.
Kwak Shi-yang (Mirror of the Witch) looks underdressed, but at least he’s got a winning smile and a great strut.
Park Ha-sun (Temptation) always chooses a similar pastel/white innocent look for the red carpet. So it’s not particularly exciting, but this one happens to look absolutely gorgeous on her.
She presented an award with Yoon Park (Come Back, Ajusshi).
And last but not least, Yook Sung-jae, who was nominated in the New Actor category for Who Are You—School 2015. I’m sad that he keeps turning down dramas. But it must be because he’s searching for the perfect role, right? You can be picky when you’re older! Come back soon, Yook Sung-jae!

Am I the only one who thinks Song Hye Gyo's make-up is horrible? And Kim Go Eun's problem isn't only her dress, it's that hair as well!

Agreed ! 2 shades whiter and shinier than she should be, probably too much BB cream or something. As for KGE dress, it's not pretty and ages her.
I've learned not to expect much when it comes to fashion and award shows. At least this time everyone isn't in only white or black ...
Jo Jin Woong was robbed ! I'm so upset he didn't win an award for Signal.

I agree that SHG's makeup looks off in some of the red carpet photos, but she was beautiful in the actual ceremony. Which makes me think that it's likely more the fault of the camera flash reflecting off the SPF in her makeup than an actual color mismatch for her skin.

@Nadila It is very rude to post a reply that has absolutely nothing to do with the comment you are replying to just so that your thoughts appear near the top of this thread, effectively knocking down the responses of those who actually replied to the subject of the original post.
I hope the admins see this and do something about it.

I don't really get how the boxes and whatnot work in the commenting section.
But is @Nadila not replying to the second commenter who mentioned Signal? Isn't that the right place to comment?

@Purple Owl, yep. Nadila is replying to Katherine's afterthought about Signal.

@Nadilia, echoing others - you were fine in responding to a previous comment
@Beez, even if you disagreed with her comment, you responded in an unkind way. Although it must be annoying to have trolls reply to the top comment, it was unfair to call Nadilia out. The comment section is for commentary. Even if you dislike her comment, her freedom of speech should be respected. No matter how terrible, you should ignore it -- there's no need to be mean to others.

@Nadilia -- not saying at all your comment was bad, just referring generally.
@Beez -- additionally, you have no idea if Nadilia is young or old. She could be 14, 44, or 84. Your comments have effect on others. There's no need to respond so harshly.

First time I've seen this opinion put to words here. How does it matter if one's comments are not at the top? Is there some sort of contest here I'm not aware of? What's the prize? Free shopping vouchers? Self-fulfillment?
No, I hope they don't spare any time out of their busy lives moderating such frivolous things.

To those who responded below this post (the system is not showing a "reply" button do I'm posting here).
Thank you to those who pointed out that Nadila was, in fact, replying in keeping with the subject matter of an earlier post. I didn't see that and I've asked for her forgiveness.
To those who thought my post was overly harsh, if she had been guilty of what I thought had happened, I don't think so at all as those are the dramabeans rules and ofttimes I see people posting nothing but the word "first".
Since Nadila did nothing wrong, but I did by mistaking her post for something that it wasn't - I take responsibility for my error as I do not want DB to be a place for hostile interactions.
Although to those that said I questioned her right to comment - that wasn't the issue at all. I questioned WHERE to comment.

Nadila, I am sorry if I jumped at you because of my kneejerk reaction to past actions of others. I did not realize that you were, indeed, responding to something said in one of the earlier posts.

Agreed! I'm really sad that Signal only get Best Dramas when it should get the Daesang (I mean, it's THAT good! And at least there's a real plot! And a real danger!), and Joo Jin-woong should get Best Actor. He seriously deserved it.

Jo Jin Wong was not robbed. He lost to an actor worthy of that award. You need to watch Six Flying Dragons to see why.
But your disappointment with it is understandable. I feel the same way with Six Flying Dragons not winning Best Screenplay or even Best Drama. But Signal taking the win is not a bad thing either.

I felt Jo Jin Wong was robbed. I watched Six Flying Dragons and was not impressed with Yoo Ah-In. He seemed to overact to me. It got to the point where I found the show annoying because of his acting.

If you think he overacts, then YAI should have not dominated both TV and film awards. But because he has won almost all the acting awards category he truly deserved it and he is talented enough worthy of the award. Im not saying Jo jin woong did not deserve it, I am sure he does too. But one should understand the depth of his character as Lee Bang Won before assessing it. Just Saying. ✌️

Ha, you are opposite me. I prefer SFD. Signal was sooo irritated. Imo not worth best screenplay.. Maybe bcoz I watched it marathoned ? The cops not smart and efficient. I felt frustrated. And the story unbelievable too. The timeline take the present and the past (the walkie talkie) only when needed. The past gone by a few years and the present only a few days... It looks like a nonsence for me.. But I think am the only one who felt that way :)

June 4, 2016 at 5:48 PM
Hmm...YAI overacts? How about in episode 31 the scene of snow fight ? How about his killing Jung Moo-joo in episode 36? How about in the last two episodes when BW's full "transformation" is complete and YAI uses his voice and eyes to convey the regret, loneliness and the enduring concerns he has over his own people as the newly crowned king?
I totally understand the frustration of Signal fans. As always, I was in awe of JJW's acting and I bawled like a baby when I watched the scene in the movie theater. Nevertheless, it's not difficult to see why the judges favored YAI over JJW with their choice of the best actress. Kim Hye Soo in Signal deftly transitions between different spaces and times, showing the younger and older versions of Cha Soo-hyun. Similarly, Yoo Ah-in create a BW that keeps "evolving" and unfolding through time. What is taken into consideration then is not only the "acting" per se, but also the difficulties and spectrum of acting required by the character.
(BTW, JJW is the hottest item in SK now, especially with the film Handmaiden--YAI doesn't win over JJW with his popularity).

@Mengwen Very well said! I love both JJW and YAI, but I'm most impressed by YAI acting in SFD (and also his movie Sado).

June 5, 2016 at 4:14 PM
I'm a tremendous fan of both YAI and JJW, but I really don't feel that JJW was robbed of an award.
This comment by Mengwen is really spot-on, as YAI had to perform the full gamut of expressions from extreme idealism to disappointment over his dad/Jung Do-Jeon/the rebellion/the new dynasty; fear and self-doubt (as a young kid/young adult, over succumbing to his fellow bully scholars and Hung Yin-Bang) to uncertain hope; extreme and immediate love to self-restraint and abstinence (over Boon-yi); powerlessness to attaining the power and position he so craves...all the while negotiating his way inch by inch (with both his enemies and allies), suffering repeated setbacks (again, from enemies and allies alike), loathing himself, proving himself, getting his hands dirty/bloody performing the most loathsome of deeds, impressing himself onto others in the most impactful of ways and making himself impossible-to-ignore at all times, etc., etc... This sort of personality doesn't call for restraint in acting, so while YAI may have appeared over-the-top at times, I think it was all consistent with his character.
I also think that anyone who's watched Secret Love Affair, would also agree with me that YAI didn't overact in SFD. His acting is similarly stellar in SLA, but his character in that drama is as far away from Bang-won as possible, and he was able to perform so well and convincingly the assortment of traits that made his role so endearing: shy/lacking-of-confidence yet harboring genius talent, painfully observant and sensitive to others, determined yet stoic, open to self-discovery, etc.
I would say that his acting in SLA perhaps blew me away more than his acting in SFD--that also being my very first taste of his particular brand of magic. In truth, perhaps I prefer more nuanced performances, because I also prefer JJW's acting in Signal more than YAI's in SFD, as I was totally absorbed by him, and never thought for a moment that he was acting the role.
At any rate, both actors were supremely convincing. If you've followed these awards (and DB) enough, you should know to take the results more lightly--rather than, say, ardently..haha. There are so many other reasons why a show or actor/actress are awarded, and many deserving ones don't get the recognition they deserve.
I'm just so glad to hear that JJW is a hot item (though who's to know whether he's really "the hottest" of all hot items).

I was thinking the same thing about half the actors pictured here. At first, I thought this was a depiction of Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, especially in the still shots where they're waving - the combination of lights and too light makeup really gave off a fake effect. Although it also speaks to how beautiful these people are and their flawless complexions.

The boys clean up nicely, which is unsurprising. Park Bo Gum is especially cute. I like that he went for an interesting tux.
It is amusing how I know basically all the names on this list, while only rarely on the films list. I think it's because I'm fine with watching drama episodes alone in my room, squealing / crying into my blanket, but I want a buddy to watch ~serious~ films. Hmmm.

.... whoa, Lee Sung-kyung is GORGEOUS. Best look of the entire night - if you're going to wear fairy-princess white, then you may as well go all the way and style it up like an actual fairy princess. No wonder she's a model.
But I'm kind of :( that the looks from two young actresses who normally dress much more interestingly on the red carpet, didn't work out as well - Kim Go-eun here and Go Ah-sung over in the Film section. They're normally fresh and interesting, but this time it didn't quite work.

I know mine too, he was such a great character portrayed by a great actor. I did watch a little of SFD, the beginning episodes, so I really can't have an honest opinion on his performance in that show.
tvN considered getting an awards show about two years ago and then they canceled their plans for some reason. I hope they consider getting one this year it is still early so they have time to plan it but who knows :/, it is just unfortunate to see actors that deserve something not get awarded.

Oh the beginning is just a small piece of it. To me, he played so many different kinds of Bang Won. Him as a teenager lost and confused, Bangwon who found a goal to achieve, Bangwon who lost that goal, him in his 20's making great contributions to the country, him in his late 20's consumed by his evil side, him as king. They're all different. Totally deserved win.

I did read a little of the actual person that he played and because of that I kind of new he was going to become somewhat evil. Also the first episodes kind of hinted that he wasn't entirely good. I don't discredit his performance or his win because I didn't finish the show so I can't really say he was bad or extremely good. Even if it wasn't best actor I wish JJW had taken something. Reading all your comments now makes me want to finish SFD.

Korean awards shows usually prioritize ratings over quality, and SFD, while always solidly in the lead for its time slot, wasn't a huge smash compared to the writers' earlier shows. However, I think the fact that it didn't end up with off the chart ratings was actually good artistically, as there was little pressure to change the story or extend it. Creating a drama without clear good and bad guys and with a very troubling protagonist may not be a recipe for winning prizes, but it made for powerful viewing.

I am relieved to see that I am not only the one who laments about the lack of the recognition for Six Flying Dragons.
Signal is a solid drama, with outstanding acting from JJW and especially KHS. The superb directing by Kim Won-suk also helps tremendously. However, when considered in terms of the subtlety and audacity of writing, the script of SFD is unrivaled. Luckily, our Bang Won (Yoo Ah In) , in his usual eccentric, brilliant acceptance speech, pays homage to the two writers of SFD who are the biggest heroes of the drama.
(Soompi forum of SFD has a full English translation of YAI's speech).
Granted, Signal is far more daesang-worthy than the feel-good CF-like dramas like Dots. It has a respectable purpose of uncovering cases of injustice so that the audience can gain, vicariously through the figure of Lee Jae-han, a sense of catharsis and restore a much-needed faith that wrongs can be righted.
While Signal aims for "revealing" social ills, SFD *asks* underlying questions: why do these injustices exist? why do they become a systematic problem and why do ordinary folks still suffer? Instead of simply showing what the problems are, SFD is an ambitious discursive treatise that explores the intimate relationship and inevitable tension between have and have-not, between elites and commoners, between the ruler and the ruled, and between the nation and its own people who are the very foundation of the nation.
It's a pity that the majority of the audience, including Knetz, treat it as another conventional sageuk, with the difference being that it gives a different light on Lee Bang Won. But to a certain extent, Lee Bang Won in SFD is also a metaphor representing revolutionary fervor and idealism. From the very beginning to the very end, SFD remains steadfastly a radical political allegory. The audience are not left with catharsis or any finite answers , but with a different set of problems and questions on top of the old ones after BW founded a new country. This is what defines history in truest sense of the word. For this, SFD is in a completely different league than other Korean dramas.
With regard to ratings, SFD's ratings were actually quite impressive. It always had two-digit ratings and ranked top 1 from start to finish, which is not an easy feat considering SFD actually demands "intellectual" involvement from its audience.
I am thrilled that YAI won the best actor. YAI's multi-faceted BW really got what the writers really want to convey through SFD--history is not black or white, but infinite shades of grey.

I completely agree, Mengwen. While Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yun do an excellent job crafting fast paced plots and interesting characters, it's their willingness to dive headlong into the complex dynamics of power that makes them one of my favorite writing teams. Not many writers weigh both the costs and benefits of different political choices so honestly or are willing to follow the ramifications of those choices in to dark, difficult places.

Let me give you a hug. I completely agree with your comment. SFD made me question so many things in life (Signal did it to me too). I give credits to the writers for writing Bang Won like this. He's not right but he's quite reasonable. I don't think what he did should be justified but I understand why he did it. I love and hate him at the same time. It takes courage and talent to write a character like that because without balance, he can go either way.
Oh, Gil Tae Mi's final speech. Strong stepping on the weak. Even Hong In Bang's speeches are persuasive. There's also that scene of Boon Yi asking Bangwon if there's a way for people ti check on the King as well. When Bangwon said no, she asked if it might be possible in the future. Now, people can vote. I just love how that connects.
SFD is a million ways awesome and it makes me sad that it didn't get as much viewership. I know the 50 episode length is scary but it's super worth it.

@Mengwen--Thank you for this, along with your earlier comment!
I think sageuks and crime procedurals are both easier to stereotype (and therefore ignore and write-off) than other genres... (Oh okay, maybe I'll eat my words later, since I can now see how melos are perhaps the easiest genre of all, what with their tired tropes.)
SFD reminded me less of usual Korean sageuks, and more of many long-spanning, lengthy drama renditions of Chinese kungfu novels by Lois Cha, in that you follow a hero's path from youth to adulthood. So, yes, to me it was in a league of its own, deserving its own award... Just its timing was unfortunate to stack up against DoTS.

So unhappy that DotS got the Daesang. I know it had to get recognition and with ratings UP THERE I knew it would win something. But in the end it was so vanilla. I think Signal was robbed - but it won best drama so I'm okay I guess.
The good thing is though that Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Gyo didn't win any big awards. Basically Baeksang was saying: you'll get the popularity awards that's all.
And don't get me wrong I WANT Song Joong Ki to win awards but let's be honest here: DotS was only to warm up his career again after military service. Acting-wise he got more challenged in dramas like Tree With Deep Roots and The Innocent Man than DotS. I'm sure we will see him win awards for other challenging dramas and movies in the future. :)

On contrary, winning Daesang just make them look like a big joke. Best actor, best actress, best scriptwriter, best director, all the main aspects that make a drama worth the Daesang is to be best in those areas (or at least, one or two). And they didn't win any of them but then won Daesang. Lol

Oh stop being so bitter. Nobody in the press or elsewhere said SHK or SJK were a joke at all. That's seriously silly. Even people who dislike DoTS will recognize the two did what they could with a rather flimsy plot, and made it work. The two also got most of the press and stole the majority of the spotlight. Baeksang did a good job at giving everyone awards and it was a nice night for everyone involved. Some people are just seriously hateful.

True. They practically had to kiss Song Song's ass because they (and GooWon) basically carried the show when its plot was falling by the wayside. The actors and cinematography were the saving grace of that drama.

June 4, 2016 at 2:02 AM
Let me add one more thing
This is what the original poster wrote
'So unhappy that DotS got the Daesang. I know it had to get recognition and with ratings UP THERE I knew it would win something. But in the end it was so vanilla. I think Signal was robbed – but it won best drama so I’m okay I guess.'
And my reply was still related to the original post about the result of Daesang. We talked about a drama won a Daesang but here you go as actors won Daesang.
I don't see my first comment as anything but hateful as it is a fact that it is a joke for a DRAMA to win a Daesang when it didn't win best scriptwriter or best director or best actor/actress. It is a valid argument. So, stop calling others as bitter and hateful just because someone wrote something that not to your liking.

Award shows are like this though..
I dislike DOTS got Daesang since I thought Daesang should be for the actor or Best of The Best Drama in which DOTS is not. But DOTS is really super super popular, not only in Korea, but in China and worldwide and since the sponsors are Chinese it's impossible to give DOTS (the drama) nothing.
Maybe... maybe the better thing is to give DOTS the Best Drama and Signal to get Daesang, but once again, it always depends on popularity and ratings.
Award shows ALWAYS depend on popularity and ratings.
jasmin
June 4, 2016 at 11:08 AM
@Jayne
Thanks for clarifying! That's what I meant.
I know for sure they gave DotS the Daesang to please the Chinese sponsors. And I don't know if that's a good thing for the drama or the actors. I simply think it's not fair to them. And it's not fair to the dramas out there which are good or/and innovative.
I know why certain actors were mentioned because behind this drama is a big fandom. And the people in this fandom somehow feel the need to defend the drama they love. I understand.
But there was nothing hateful in my comment or the comments made by @Jayne. We were simply talking about how a drama which didn't win anything else can win the biggest prize of the Baeksang Awards. That's a valid argument.
It doesn't make us bitter.
Catz
June 4, 2016 at 4:08 AM
I absolutely agree. Why bother giving a Daesang out to a drama if it doesn't win either best drama, best actor/actress, script or directing. It's a valid point :)
You might as well call it the "Hallyu" award for popularity. For the past 5 years the Daesang's (TV one) lost it credibility. Its more of an award to those who've contributed to the Hallyu Wave. Not to mention Baeksang having to please Chinese sponsors iQiyi & public broadcast channels.
There's too much of a disparity between winners in the film category verses the drama category.

Congratulations for the winners. Signal will be obvious choice for writing, best actress, and best drama since they have "won" critics' heart for the story and Descendants of the Sun, since become another phenomenon in China and other country. But there are some unexpected (or I mean shock) win.
For example, King of Mask Singer win (since Take Good Care of Fridge is in "hot" one) or Kim Gu Ra (as long as I know, he is the main in King of Mask Singer and Radio Star, but nominated with My Little Television) or also for best actor (when I saw the speech, too long and become boring. Isn't there any people who he can speak with??).
I watch this awards since 2010 (because I just knew this awards from this year). When I look the review of red carpet, year by year, by dress' model and color become less and less (black and white also laces). What are they think? From the show itself, I still like 49th Baeksang Awards (although hate black and white most for red carpet dress). It feels big and crowd is louder for all nominees). But, when I see this year, at the same place and same show, It also loud, but only to a few one (SongSong couple or Signal team), other else it just few clap.
I thought in 2015, when audiences fewer clap and gag for opening or computer graphics or big screen or another tables like Golden Globe Awards for actors and actresses, I expected to bigger, glamorous, or spectacular for this year. But, all I have to say is another dissapointing things. When in most news says this awards show is one of few most prestigious awards show in Korea (even China join in and InStyle join), I didn't see it yesterday (even in 2014 and 2015). Also, when giving awards for TV Popularity Awards, is it real only one trophy? or the ladies bring wrong trophy? Is there any change? Because it looks like Song Joong Ki looks a little confuse and doubt about his winning. Hope better for next year.
(These are my opinions, not to mention hurt or harm anyone).

It was a good night overall. I think DoTS daesang win did take the wind out Signal's sails a bit, but it did win three awards. I also think SHK (and SJK to some extent) was pretty deserving of an acting award as well, so giving DoTS something was a good way to recognize that they were the main contributors to the success of it. I just consider it the Song Song award lol. The daesang does not always go to acting anyway. Ask Na PD.
I'm also happy Pd Shin won, especially after all the BS he got from Reply 1988.
The whole thing seemed pretty fair. And boring and nothing was that surprising. And most of the fashion as well. SHK and SJK looked perfect to me. My favorite dresses of the night were probably Hyeri (her body looked killer).

TBH given how they had decided to hand over the daesang to DOTS over the other shows/actors, I would have preferred that they'd made it a co-daesang for SHK-SJK as a pair instead of the show because IMO the pair of them carried the show and I wanted the actors (SHK especially) to get the recognition. Then again, if you take out the Kim Eun Sook hype maybe it wouldn't have generated as much buzz, and if you take away the cinematography then it wouldn't be as pretty. So yeah, I guess it was a group effort. Also I guess you can argue that they'd kissed Song-Song's ass enough with all the popularity awards.

and why this year the popularity award only have 1 trophy?.. i mean why baeksang give 1 trophy for 2 people.. ? really weird to see only one that bring the trophy... song hye kyo even have to give her trophy to joongki... why baeksang ..why..???? you have give them both the trophy..not only one.. ..is money become the problem???

I think Baeksang is secretly shipping songsong. I read that it's very likely they are going to get married, so this trophy will be sitting tall in their home. No need to have two. If they do split in the future, just cut that damn trophy right down the middle. It won't bring back good memories anyway.

hmm, daesang goes to DOTS but best drama was signal? is this supposed to make sense? doesn't the daesang usually go to the best drama? by the way, this is NOT snark, but a genuine question. can't remember how it's worked in previous years... i'm usually primarily interested in the fashion! haha. oh well. i like all the actors from both shows, so i can't say i'm unhappy. signal DID win best screenplay, and ryu jun-yeol won best newcomer, both of which were well deserved.
song hye-kyo looked like an angel. i still can't quite make out the dress, but it never struck me as too bridal. she wore it well, though on any other actress it might have been blah. her face elevates the dress. she wore it well and again, she looked angelic.
kim hyun-joo looked great, though in the photo the dress seems to be clinging weirdly around her ankles. more korean actresses need to dress like that on red carpets. there's always way too many flowy, feminine gowns—all too safe and boring. it's like they're entered in a grecian goddess competition.
park ha-sun's dress is beautiful, and normally i hate her red carpet looks (way too safe and feminine). in this case, i wish she had done something more with her hair and makeup; might have made more impact if she had. but she just looks sweetly pretty and that's it.
ack. i hate to say it, because i really love this girl, but hyeri's look could have been better. the dress makes her look way too mature. where's deok-sun!? seriously. she's tall and pretty, has a great figure—she could have rocked something else.

It does feel weird. They give Signal the Best Drama award and yet give DoTS the Daesang. They say one drama's the 'best' but give the highest prize to another. It's confusing lol. Not really surprising though as other award giving bodies split awards(even Daesangs) - so much for getting 'best' ___ award, eh?

I think they give DoTS because it became such a huge success that enjoyed by lots of people,
the fact is lots of people indeed like it even if they didn't say it's the best drama ever,
they are super popular and it gonna be weird for not getting any awards, but they seem to lack in the other department besides hugely all ages enjoyable drama,
meanwhile not everyone content with Signal, some really like it and overall agree that's it's great, just not lot of people seems to enjoy it, it's not for all ages either,
but that just my guess

Kim Go Eun might have won for Best New Actress, but she was definitely a fashion failure. OMG... One of the most unattractively dressed person of the night. Unflattering, and the color was awful with the ugly black beads hanging all over the collar. The shoes were unattractive for such an event. Does she look in the mirror before she steps out and thinks she looks good?
Gong Hyun Joon was also a miss. She looked like a lady who was going out for a luncheon date.
Wasn't this suppose to be a more elegant prestigious awards event??

Their relationship was the highlight of the show. Truly special. Hyeri is so pretty. ❤ Congrats to Yoo Ah-in as well! Go Kyung-pyo - yeah whats with his hair? hope it was for a part or something cause he looks a bit like an asian ken doll? kind of a fake plastic look for some weird reason.
Kim Go Eun - does she have a stylist? if so, she needs to fire them and hire a new one. if not, she needs to get one ASAP. Love her but her outfit is blindingly bad. like shoes are so cheap and inappropriate looking. ugh.
Song Hye Kyo - looks lovely as ever but that makeup…ugh. bad makeup artist. they should know how to account for flashes and stuff. having makeup on face look totally different from the rest of her skin colour is such a no no.
I dont get the fashion at these awards…so many fashion donts this year. =/

Lee sung kyun had the best dress and makeup IMO. Song hye kyo's face looked way whiter than her neck which was very unflattering to her. Don't get how makeup artists can do this to celebrities.
Go kyung po's hair -.- it reminds me of the hair on a male doll.
Kim go eun's dress?? She's so beautiful though. My cuties Sungjae and Bogum looked great.
Overall i think winners were fair. Although Signal was the better drama but they could not ignore DOTS because of its popularity.

Even though I'm very disappointed that Daesang goes to DOTS (because let's be honest, there's nothing special about the drama and I find myself getting bored at times while watching it) but I'm glad that at least Signal got Best Drama award. It's like they're saying, "Okay DOTS you can get Daesang because of ratings and all, but still the Best of Best Drama is Signal". Because winning Daesang doesn't mean you have excellent story and plot, right? Since the best screenwriter award goes to Kim Eun-hee (and with excellent reason as well). So I'm good with it.
What's with popularity award? Who decide it? The netizens? I'm asking because I'm genuinely curious about it.
Mr. Joo Jin-woong, I'm so sad that he didn't win any award. He seriously deserved it. Or at least give him supporting actor award.
Congrats to Kim Hye-soo. Loves her acting <3

Since I watch DOTS until the end, I can feel what you feel, though I don't think it's addictive at all. I watch it thinking it will be an action-filled drama and seeing the awesome casting, I have high hopes for it. So the hurt I feel when it don't deliver, well, I just can't describe it with words. I was just so disappointed with it.
Well, I guess K-netizens still prefer rom-coms over thriller and procedural crimes. My taste just differs from them I guess.
I haven't watched SFD too so I can't judge Yoo Ah In, but people are saying that it is good, so I think he deserves the award? I just want Joo Jin-woong to get something. They didn't have the supporting actor award in Baeksang?

If wiki is accurate, this is not the first time a Daesang went to a drama. However, it is the first time a drama wins Daesang without winning in any big category.
Daesang went to Deep Rooted Tree in 2012, Jumong in 2007, My Name is Kim Sam Soon in 2006 and Lovers in Paris in 2005. All these dramas also won Best Screenplay. If you go back to year 2000 to 2003, the dramas which won Daesang either won Best Screenplay or Best Director or Best Actor.
Baeksang cannot ignore Dots because of their massive rating and mainstream popularity. I think most people know why Dots won Daesang although the writer, PD or SS just weren't the best. I am not saying they are bad. They are good but pale in comparison to the winners and other nominees in Best Drama, PD or Actor & Actress categories.

I don't know which other actor could make me cry along as he cries snot and tears. That cinema scene is forever etched in my mind.
Also, congratulations to Signal for winning Best Drama, but I'm sad that Lee Je-hoon wasn't even present to share the honour with everyone... He was the main lead, and even though some people may disagree, to me he did a fantastic job as Park Hae-young. Song Hye Kyo should have won Daesang. Without her, DotS wouldn't have succeded; and giving Daesang to a drama is absolutely ridiculous (it's as if they avoided on purpose to reward Song Hye Kyo's performance - they seem to believe that a beautiful woman can't act).
Yoo Ah In deserved his award indeed.
I don't know why Kim Hye Soo received an award (maybe because of the fact that she's older and that she played in so many movies, I don't know).

I'm sorry but have you seen Kim Hye-Soo in Signal? She was amazing, and it's so unfair to say that won Best Actress based on age and seniority. I've watched DoTS and what left an impression on me was how stagnant Song Hye-kyo's acting has been. That seen when Yoo Shi-Jin got wheeled out of the ambulance and Mo-Yeon gasped in fright/shock...? So cringe-worthy!

Yes, I have seen her in Signal and she was boring. The male actors were actually better. And the fact that you say that Song Hye Kyo was "cringe-worthy" in I-don't-know-what scenes is irrelevant and it proves that you confuse fiction with reality (the character was that way not the actress).

Hmmm.. Shin Se-kyung (aka Boon-yi) in SFD was closer to "boring," if you ask me, although maybe it was cos she was opposite the tour-de-force that was Yoo Ah-In.
But to me, no part of Signal, esp. Kim Hye-Soo, could be considered even remotely boring. Not even by a smidgen or a hair's breadth or an eighth of a decimal point.

I can't believe what I'm reading here. You should be ashamed if you think the jury is just a bunch of jealous people/women. I'm pretty sure the jury consists of more men than women. And it's about quality not popularity.
I won't lie I'm not a fan of SHK. But if she had been any good in DotS I would've been okay with her getting an award.
But it's simple: Kim Hye-Soo is a brilliant actress who makes you forget she's actually playing role. That's the difference between her and SHK.
So hands down! KHS deserved the Best Actress Award.

Well, the fact that you agree with Baeksang decisions and that you are "pretty sure the jury consists of more men than women" doesn't prove anything. It's just your unfounded opinion.
However, what you don't seem to know is that Song Hye Kyo has been consistently nominated for Best Actress (by Baeksang) since Autumn Tale (2000).
Now, why would they bother nominating her, if they think that she is not talented? And if they realize that she's talented why has she never won? This sounds pretty fishy actually.
As for Kim Hye Soo, she may make you "forget she's actually playing a role" but she doesn't make me feel the same way. So actually, it's not that "simple".

Well it's okay KHS doesn't make you feel that way. Did I say so? No I didn't. I simply said how I feel about her.
SHK got nominated but she didn't win.
So yes it is that simple. SHK got nominated and didn't win. KHS got nominated and won. Period.
Deal with it and don't try to belittle KHS winning while your favourite actress didn't. Don't say terrible things about the actress who won and don't agree with people saying terrible things about the jury just because you're not happy with their decision. It's immature and you don't look good as one of SHK's fans.
Oh and because YOU brought up SHK never winning the Baeksang Award for Best Actress. Well could it be that the actresses who got nominated were better than her? Just a thought. ;)

SHK & SJK are really great, the impression for the characters they played is rooted deep in my heart. From the news reports, majority of the crowd in baeksang ceremony are supporting them. Are they the same as me?if yes, shall I say they are comparably better than others who won in acting? June 6, 2016 at 1:33 AM
Okay, let's talk about complexity of character.
There was almost none in Signal, the plot was actually very complex (and Kim Hye Soo looked ridiculous when playing the younger version; Song Hye Kyo managed not to look ridiculous even when playing drunk or cringe-worthy).
The most complex character was actually that of Kim Hyun Joo in I Have a Lover (but most people seem to forget about her, well, because of the ratings) and that actress portrayed it very well (and she should have won Best Actress).
Song Hye Kyo's character in DotS was not very complex, but very, very difficult to play (that is why she should have won Daesang because her performance was excellent).
But, Baeksang couldn't ignore an older actress like Kim Hye Soo (with great performances in the past, but not, unfortunately, in Signal), could they?
There goes the objectivity of Baeksang!

+ I hate Kim goo eun dress that very, definetly soooo awful, is her Coordi noona wanna make goeun looks like Cleopatra??? Seriously??? WHY KIM GO EUN CUT HER HAIR just why? She looks pretty with the pony tail, but now her hair is too sort and the she has The bangs now it's reminds me of Lee Jin wook/lee jongsuk hair in The time and pinoccio, Is she going her looks like that in that Kim Eun Suk new drama with gongyoo??? eh
+ Also Goo Kyungpo Hair is a big no no!!!" his hair looks like a negerian man or Justin timberlake sorry, i'm just telling my opinion, Is he going to looks like that in his new drama with Gong hyejin, and joo jeongseok? Please think twice before You guys cut your hair atleast make it sure you choose the right hair style, the hair style is important seriously, Important Lmafao ~
