SBS delays Advance, schedules Scarlet Heart: Goryeo for August
by girlfriday
There’s been a lot of flip-flopping over at SBS lately, with their Wednesday-Thursday drama Deal being replaced with the new thriller Wanted. Now the same thing is happening with their Monday-Tuesday shows: The new drama from writer Park Kyung-soo (Punch, Empire of Gold, Chaser) about cops called Advance was being planned for the post-Doctors slot in August, but it’s been put on hold while fantasy romance Scarlet Heart: Goryeo has secured that timeslot.
It actually seems the smarter thing to do, given that Scarlet Heart: Goryeo is already shooting and will be 100% pre-produced for its run, while Advance has yet to cast. I also remember writer Park Kyung-soo collapsing during Chaser and having to go to the hospital, so I don’t think the live-shoot is his friend. Is it anybody’s friend?
Scarlet Heart: Goryeo is the remake of Chinese drama Bu Bu Jing Xin that stars IU (The Producers) as a woman who gets time-warped back to the Goryeo dynasty, and becomes involved with a very large family of princes, some of whom are vying for the throne, or her affections, or both.
The princes include Lee Jun-ki (Scholar Who Walks the Night), Kang Haneul (Misaeng), Hong Jong-hyun (Mama), EXO’s Baekhyun, Nam Joo-hyuk (Cheese in the Trap), Ji-soo (Sassy Go Go), Kim San-ho (Rude Miss Young-ae), and Yoon Sun-woo (Devoted Min Deul-le). Man, that king had a lot of sons.
It does seem to be the summer of youth sageuk, between Scarlet Heart, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, and also Hwarang, which hasn’t secured a premiere date yet. Is it asking for too much that they all be good? Up to my eyeballs in epic tales of fantasy and romance is a problem I’d like to have.
Scarlet Heart: Goryeo will follow Doctors on Mondays and Tuesdays, beginning August 29.

I'm still-- very painfully, mind you-- in withdrawal mode--with super painful symptoms-- from "Marriage Contract"..... So hearing some uplifting drama news like this is helpful =D Since I loved the original "Bu Bu Jing Xin"

Any upcoming sageuk I miss?

ITA. It feels like I've been running a marathon with all the back to back saeguks. There was an explosion of saeguk dramas after the success of The Moon that Embraces the Sun and it hasn't ended. I think the burnout started for me after dealing with Joseon Guman, Three Musketeers, and Nightwatchman all airing around the same time.

To clarify, Moon Embracing the Sun didn't cause an "explosion" of saeguk drama. Saeguk dramas have been staples in Korea for a very long time. Rather, Moon Embracing the Sun popularized fusion saeguk, which is different from general saeguk.

Thank you. If I had my way I wouldn't even put "sageuk" and "Moon Embraces the Sun" in the same sentence lol, but you're right, it is what it is. For this reason I have such a love/hate relationship with fusion sageuk--there are always shows like Damo, Chuno or Joseon X-Files to look back on, but lately everything feels like a METS clone :(

Is this a sign that broadcast stations are learning their lesson about live shoots? There seems to be so much more pre-produced dramas lately and that they are more willing to delay a show than push the directors, actors, writers, etc. to the brink to get them to finish on time seems to be a good sign. I hope this is a trend that will continue.
I will always love k-dramas and k-pop, but it's always disheartening and makes it harder to enjoy the product when you know that the people involved are collapsing from being overworked.

My thoughts exactly. From your lips to God's ear.
When I learned about live shooting, Kdrama turned into a guilty pleasure. I realize that the finance side of the business is cutthroat... but the working conditions for casts, crews, and writers is horrible -- and that's not even taking the season or weather into account. It's one thing to suffer for one's art, but quite another for everyone involved to be zombi-fied and dropping like flies... or getting injured or killed in real life.
I'm all in favor of finished scripts so the actors can make informed decisions about roles. Few things are sadder than seeing a great cast struggling to keep afloat a drama that went south and should have been euthanized before it saw the light of day.

Liu Shi Shi and Nicky Wu were so good in the Original Scarlet Heart, not to mention Annie Liu as Roulan and my personal fav 14th prince, Lin Geng Xin. I just hope this turns out good no matter how much time it takes.

I agree!!!! Liu Shi Shi and Nicky Wu were amazing and that chemistry, oh my!!! I mean she not only had chem with the lead but with ALL of the princes! except 9 whom I hated to the core. I also adored 14th but my fave was 13th! that friendship!! even though I loved the otp, what had me hooked to the drama was that relationship! the love, understanding and respect they had for each other tugged at my heart! They should make OTPs have relationships like that!
I just hope they don't mess this drama and that they don't do what they did on Scarlet Heart 2... I still can't get over how they messed it up!!!

The original Bu Bu Jing Xin is very good in portraying the novel so while I'm skeptical about this Korean Version (because the actors' age doesn't really match the original), I'm hoping that they can at least be half as good.

Wasn't the reason for pre-production so that they could air at the same time in China?? If so, how in the world is this going to work as I thought it took at least 3 months for it to go through the process? Oh well, I'll take it as this is the one I am looking forward to the most. Love a lot of the actors and the PD though a little concerned with the writer.
I enjoyed the original though the last quarter of the C-drama was brutal and the ending was meh so I'm hoping they actually improve on the original. The C-drama did have amazing pacing which made it very bingeworthy.
I absolutely despise the live shoot system and am very sympathetic to actors who read a synopsis and an episode or two and then end up in a drama that looks nothing like what they signed on for. People on all the sites are often very brutal with the actors but, at some point, I realized it's all a roll of the dice. That's why I can admire an actor who can tell their drama is perhaps going sideways or not getting expected ratings but still puts everything they have into their drama. Lee Joon Ki and Scholar comes to mind as does the excellent job by the entire cast of Come Back, Mister.

This drama has been shooting at least since mid-February if not earlier, which means it will have about 6 months of time to shoot and edit everything before the premier date. That seems like plenty of time to me.
Unless you mean it takes 3 months for China to approve it or something? In which case I don't know.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. My understanding is that, yes, it takes 3 months for China to do their thing. That was my understanding for why it took so long for DOTS to air....they were waiting on approval. Regardless, good news for those of us who want to watch it!

I personally couldn't even finish the original Scarlet Heart, so I won't be biased. If a lot of effort has been made into the Korean version and plot and characters stay coherent, it'll be more than ok with me!
On another note, as a fan of historicals, I'm happy about this season of sageuk. But I'll be even happier if they're all good :)

I'd completely forgotten about this show and had no idea IU was in it. Plus that list of princes has me eager for this to start. I know that most likely Lee Jun-ki will win her affections, but is it wrong for me to be rooting for Ji-soo?
So many sageuks this summer! All of them sound interesting. Can't wait!

Wouldn't this mean they would have to rush to finish filming for this? Rushing the shooting of a modern drama has bad results, I don't want to imagine what this would do to a sageuk. But since I don't see koreans too interested in the drama anyway, I don't think the production being a bit faulty would change their reaction much.

Aww,I kinda like gats. At first,I found them akward and distracting as I couldn't take the scene seriously when staring at that sily hat. But something happened and I started to notice its absence and even started to *gasp* miss it. I think Do Min Joon in seguek flashback is partialy to blame. Now its turned to a fun game where I'm looking forward to my favourite actors in gats and to see who could pull it off. I mean, its the ultimate proof of beauty: to where the fancy equivalent of a straw hat and still smoulder(remembers Gwi's epic outing that made women swoon, literaly) . Speaking of which,I'd love to see Lee Min Ho in a straw hat just for funsies(heehee).
Wow that was unexpectedly long!

I can't wait! IU!!!!!! I really hope she shows she's here to stay with this. But I think I'll always secretly wish that all her characters have a bit of Cindy in them, because before Cindy, I couldn't have imagined IU as Cindy, and after Cindy, I can't imagine IU not as Cindy. Those expressions! That sass! I shall be v. disappointed if this series relegated her to the Nice, Innocent Girl character-type.

Korean drama has done quite well in terms of cinematography in the last few years, and it's getting better and better, so I dont really worry about pretty pictures.
What I do worry about is the ending.
PLEASEEEEEE.....give us satisfying ending! It's not fair to keep us watching the show for weeks, only to let us hang in desperation or even question marks afterwards (read: no more sad, confusing endings like Rooftop Prince, and Big, please!)

I've been repeating her scenes in Producers to warm up for her new drama because seriously, her character as Cindy is one of the best kdrama character for me, this girl has a looooot of Knetz haters, I really wish she'll rock her role here to once again prove her haters wrong.
