Open Thread #447: Take 2

Because I’ve never seen a calendar and scheduled this week’s open thread on the wrong day, here’s its sequel. I triple-checked this time, you guys! (I had ONE JOB!)

You should. It's the only drama I'm watching since the past couple of months. Slowly finishing the final episodes.

It has taught me that romance is overrated.
OK. OK Da was divorced three times, but it never got her down.

ODJ is one of the best written heroines this year and my favorite one definitely!
I love how she is basically still the same ODJ and never once being a Candy or relegated to only love partner. She's the Chief Marketing and rightfully so! While is described as timid, but he's actually really loyal and talented and can be forceful too.
It's refreshing to see this kind of dynamics in k-drama.

Funny how a Thursday Open Thread confused so many of us on our time / space continuum ! Proof of the place of Dramabeans in our lives ! (hint : a alarmingly central place -no complain !)
Happy real Friday 13th !

IKR?! There's an old movie called If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium-- for many of us, it's: If It's Open Thread, This Must Be Friday. Yesterday I had a vague recollection of there having been a similar incident with the OT once before-- I don't know if we've ever gotten double-OT goodness before, but I finally did remember that once, the OT was posted a few hours late, which also caused many Beanies to wonder if it really was Friday. The role DB plays in the rhythms of our lives is no joke!

You're right! DB is very essential in drama addicts' lives. It makes watching experiences better and interesting since we can read from many people's perspective.

Now that you mentioned about that, I've finally realized that DB is like internet to my daily life, which I have to connect everyday or else I feel empty ;p

God of Noodles is ROCKING IT. Episodes 5 and 6 were amazing, setting up key relationships and slowly bringing Da Hae and Moo Myung together. Even if DH doesn't end up the romantic lead she's definitely the lead female and one of the most active protagonists I've seen in a while. I can't wait till next week <3

That drama is so intense it gives me chills every episode, it's not even a thriller or horror and wasnt it supposed to be a melodrama? In any case i'm loving this surprise and the characters and the dark cinematography <3

hey, we got two OTs for the time of one, what's not to like?!

I suppose this is the right thread to ask whether Cozybooks enjoyed Captain America: Civil War? Since the previous OT left off at 'just about to go watch it'.

And now I want a Black Widow movie where Steve (and Bucky!) shows up, because I am so not ready to say goodbye to Chris Evans' outings as Captain America, and Avengers movies are so jam-packed (as was Civil War, but to a lesser extent).

Also I may be cautious on declaring my love of a tvN drama this early (thanks, Cheese!) but I can safely say I'm really looking forward to Monday's episode of Oh Hae-young Again. Maybe this is a weird descriptor to use, but it's just so soothing, like comfort food. Largely thanks to Seo Hyun-jin, of course.

Yea what pogo said. I know she's Irish but was born in NY. I'm a bit lazy to be specific. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

Cillian Murphy <3. He is almost 40 but still have that boyish look. We have something in common with Christopher Nolan when it comes to Murphy.
Those eyes can also scare the crap out me when he plays a baddie lol.

Funny u should mention the Night Manager...it was only yesterday that I was watching an episode of Graham Norton show, where the guests included Tom Hiddleston (<3 <3), and they were talking about his show...
It sounds hella interesting and I have it on my watch-list...planning to marathon this weekend..hee :D

I watched the first two eps of Oh Hae-young Again last night, and loved it too! I think what really snared me is the leading lady's character - she's so brassy and assertive in the aftermath of being traumatically dumped, and it's such a lovely and unusual way for a woman to reinvent herself after the end of a relationship.

She started out as a demure, sweet young lady, but now she is clearly not willing to take any more nonsense. I love her for her strength and courage and the fact that she has apparently decided to stop giving a damn about what people think, and just does her thing and speaks her mind. YOU GO GIRL.

(Of course, she is also so gorgeous that it's a little silly to hear her contrasted negatively with the "pretty" Oh Hae-young, but I have given up on ever seeing an "ugly duckling" on TV or in the movies that actually IS anything but conventionally attractive, but with bad hair, frumpy clothes and/or glasses slapped on.)

Something that I find iffy is the fact that the hero evidently felt justified in ruining a stranger's life when he thought the man was marrying his ex. That he is now wracked with guilt seems to be solely down to the fact that the man wasn't actually associated with his ex at all - which to me doesn't make much of a difference. It's not like someone whose guilt begins and ends with the fact they happen to be marrying your ex deserves to be bankrupted and sent to jail any more than a random stranger off the street.

But still! I love the show, and I love the fact the hero IS horrified at what he's done to the extent he is, and I love love love the heroine, and I can't wait to watch eps 3+4 tonight. :-)

I do think that Do-kyung thought his ex's fiance was likely the one who ran away with her on the day of his wedding. I guess because he figured running off to Paris was a sign of lasting commitment or something? On the one hand, that's an assumption you don't make without facts. On the other, if he had plotted his revenge enough to fact-check, I think I would have been upset because he put time and effort into it? Here, he makes a drunken mistake under his friend's influence, during his weakest moment etc.

It still doesn't mean he was justified in pulling the investment at the time. But, honestly, I think he only thought it would put a dent in their happiness. I definitely don't think he expected the guy to be bankrupted and thrown in jail and, even if it still was his ex's fiance, I think he would have felt guilty for what he had done. Unfortunately, we can't know for sure whether that's the case or not. I really do think the way he was left at the altar, with only those photos as explanation, was horrible so I am giving him a chance to make amends.

My present fear/problem is that I think the show is going to "justify" our hero's cruelty to the other Hae Young's fiancé. I hope they don't. But they might just make the former jailbird somehow a baddie who was "really, really, really" doing something shady anyway so he kinda deserved it.

I'm hoping the visions are gonna amp this drama up to a whole nother level..maybe into the paranormal. For all we know this guy will end up in a coma. Didn't he say that he felt his life would end tragically?

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree. I don't think I'd mind it if they made Tae-jin a flawed man in his own right, who perhaps made his own mistakes in his business dealings. But I don't want them to make him this horrible guy that Do-kyung happened to rescue her from through his mistake.

That said, I think Do-kyung already recognizes that by doing what he did, he COULD have hurt an innocent man. It doesn't matter if they make Tae-jin bad because nothing justifies so drastically affecting the life of someone you don't know (even if they ran away with your fiance to Paris!).

I'm actually really looking forward to our hero's suffering in this drama so I hope you're right about the visions taking the drama to more epic levels. A lot of people are questioning the importance of the visions, but I still think there's an underlying story there.

0

Yes, same here - I agree with both of you. It would be a too cheap and easy way out in terms of plotting and character redemption to retroactively make the jailed fiance a bad guy, and it wouldn't actually change anything about the morality of Do-Kyung's actions. Too many dramas choose that kind of non-solution to fudge over a tricky moral situation.

If the writing doesn't let it fall under the table somewhere along the way, Do-Kyung's hand in Hae-Young's and her ex-fiance's misfortune is going to be a very tough problem to solve in terms of a romance between the leads. I'll be interested to see how they do this!

A stronger paranormal angle would be very cool, and rather necessary for the set-up to make sense - otherwise there'd be no need for the visions at all, really.

At this point, I'm thinking there may be something more behind all the parallels between Do-Kyung and Hae-Young and the other Hae-Young - some kind of paranormally entangled threads of fate thing. Not exactly past lives, but... a deeper level of some kind beyond the surface we've seen so far.

0

OOh, Alex! I hadn't thought about the idea of a possible karmic connection between all of them. I so hope the writer goes there.

0

obviously no one with eyes is ever going to think Seo Hyun-jin is ugly, but I don't think the show is trying to establish that she was 'ugly' back then - she was pretty in her own right, but just completely overshadowed by the prettier, more popular Oh Hae-young and probably ended up being seen as plain in comparison.

I'm not a fan of the ruin-her-fiance plan either, but I'm willing to roll with whatever this drama tells us Do-kyung is going to do about that situation.

Don't they call her "dirt" Oh Hae Young? I don't speak Korean myself, though - just read that as someone's translation, so who knows...

0

@Alex - "Dirt" Oh Hae-young is a total mistranslation, the actual word they used in Korean doesn't even come close to that - it's "just" Oh Hae-young, like Peeps said.

0

Ah, I see - thank you for letting me know! Considering how everyone always overlooks her and isn't shy about expressing their disappointment it's "just" her, the "just" seems plenty harsh enough!

Totally agree with the comfort food comparison. It's funny how the show can be quite melancholic at times, but it always cheers me up instead of weighing me down. The sadness represented in the show feels comforting rather than weary.

I just hope it manages to keep it's light and zippy tone once the real "drama" is revealed later.

Ahaha yeah!! Captain America: Civil War was amazing!! My world's just totally been blown away, no biggie. I love it when you have a whole bunch of superheros in a movie together, not just the one. I'm glad it's getting more and more like that--although they have their own moments to shine too, especially for their first movie. It was awesome. And Spiderman. I just can't even when he's involved, I love him so much! And the ending, and the philosophy (Accords) and the... the... everything!! Haaaah, that was a good two (three?) hours of my life. I'm totally not ready to say goodbye to Chris Evans as Cap, either. He really did a fantastic job embodying not only the character but what the character stood for. Thanks for asking! :) :)

My worst fear about Evans as Cap didn't come to pass in this movie, and for that I am so glad because we get to see him again, even if it's just for one more Avengers film. I just ended up with all the Steve/Bucky feels, and I can't wait to see what they do with them going forward. And Steve's friendship with Natasha, that moment in the church was one of the sweetest things I've seen in the entire MCU.

I'm really looking forward to the Spiderman and Black Panther movies now. And also hoping the next Avengers film has more of Steve <3

All of the yes!! I'm fine with deviating from the comics so long as Cap gets more screen time... is that bad? And yes to him an Natasha!! I was so happy to see that, it really brought home the idea that "we can disagree, but that doesn't change family". At least, I think they feel like family.

And so much to think about, philosophically. (Spoilerish, but it's Marvel not kdrama so...) I got all the parallelism foil feels when Cap told Bucky he didn't have control over what he'd done... (adding in my head that's exactly what the Accords would do, too--make it not their fault, as they had no choice in what they did.)

Anyway, I loved it. AND SPIDERMAN. I'm so glad with how they portrayed him--it felt really true to the comics. *crossing fingers for his movie*

Hi pogo! Hi redfox! It's been ages and ages since I popped onto DBOT to see what's crackin'. Mostly because I've gone to the dark side and I now help English sub Thai lakorns. :-)

There's not a lot in KDramaLand that has caught my eye. I recently finished Marriage Contract, and now I'm sifting through some Mandarin-language offers, including Refresh Man, and My Amazing Boyfriend.

I am watching Viki's "Dramaworld" series, and actually recapping along with my collabs JoAnne and kakashi. It's not as trope-y as I hoped, but it's cute enough for 15-minute episodes. Justin Chon as bad guy is hilarious, and the best casting of the show.

Anyway, RL is pulling me back and awaaayyyy.....[waves]

I thought you were just avoiding Friday the 13th!

So, lately the dramas I'm watching are not the dramas I thought I'd be watching. I'm solidly committed to Entertainer and Another Oh Hae Young. Neighborhood Lawyer has really been putting me off as it's gotten more ridiculous. I'm sort of filler watching it. Monster is just plain weird but I kind of like it anyway, especially when certain cast members just give up and mug and do comedy. It's kind of going into the "it's bad but good" category. Alas the subbers at Viki seem underwhelmed and DramaFever is for some reason releasing its episodes on a couple day delay (Friday) and beating them. So I keep checking to see if it's done so I guess I'm a bit hooked. Master: God of Noodles was just not a good fit. I think I would try to watch Baker King again instead of it.

Sadly I have apparently given up on Vampire Detective, the show I was expecting to really love. Maybe I just had too high expectations.

With Ms. Temper finished I am going to tune in to Mirror of the Witch. Let's hope it's good!

Haha! Happy Friday the 13th Beanies!
I really did think today was Saturday when I saw the first Open thread post this afternoon:
Me: I can't believe I didn't open DB at all yesterday and I missed it!
*reads the comments*
Me: oh.... Yesterday was Thurs... So it's now... Friday? Ah yes. I did send the kid to school and I just picked him up. What am I thinking?!? ?

The kid was sick (again!) so only went to school today, and now I'm sick so I guess that's why I was semi-delirious. ?
On the bright side the kid just started saying "no!" and now we have much more entertaining, if exasperating conversations ?

I finished watching Thank You and enjoyed it a lot! Jang Hyuk Oppa ? Overall the acting was great from all the leads and the little girl was fantastic. Definitely worth the hours I spent on it.

Determined to get down to Liar Game this week! ?

A few Beanies mentioned Love me if you Dare in the last OT and I thought I'd share my 2 cents:

Wallace Huo in suits is ?. His acting is also good but I could never really get into the whole story. The plot also started getting weird towards the end and I FFed a lot. The romance btw the 2 leads wasn't something I really bought into, and at first I expected the female lead to be more sassy and smart, but she seemed to become such a damsel in distress that I didn't like it so much. That being said, I did watch more than half of it faithfully before I started skipping parts and then finally I read recaps at the end just so I knew how it ended. And somehow I wasn't motivated to actually watch the ending.
Just my honest opinion- so that others don't set their expectations too high!

Hi Palanapikake and Michykdrama!
*Waves fin enthusiastically*

I completely agree about LMIYD. I loved the first 12 episodes though! I just finished Imperial Doctress which was very well done, but a long 50 episode historical that never gets the romantic leads together. That said, it was well-written and compelling (based on some true events that were combined into one central story). I love Wallace Huo and he was the emperor who had an unrequited (sort of) love.

I like My Sunshine, the director's cut. I might watch the longer version.

Shan Sham Comes to Eat is a favorite contemporary Cdrama from the mainland. The lead actress is so bubbly. I fast forwarded a bit (long reflective conversations, didn't care for the second leads, and thought it was a bit Classic in its use of tropes. I loved it though, and it surprised me that it had the sort of comfortable feel - like eating cookies - sort of stress free and nice.

I tried watching Thinking of You Lu Xiang Bei with Hawick Lau (because Hawick is so wonderful to watch), but there are no subtitles after a few episodes and I don't speak Chinese. I hung in for a few episodes, but I've read that it ends *spoiler* sadly, so I didn't have the heart to finish it.

I really wish I had a contemporary Cdrama recommendation, too. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Wallace Huo in emperor's threads... be still my foolish heart! Now that makes IMPERIAL DOCTRESS more enticing. I'd seen that Viki.com has it. -- Is that where you've watched the other productions you mentioned?

What is MY SUNSHINE about?

SHAN SHAM COMES TO EAT -- The title is making me think of MY DINNER WITH ANDRE. ;-) What is it with all this eating in Dramaland? Dang, it's making me ravenous! Which I need like a hole in the head... harrumpf!

THINKING OF YOU LU XIANG BEI -- I'd take a gander at a couple of episodes if you think the acting is that much fun to watch. ;-)

Aloha, Michykdrama!

You know the lei flowers? Aw, shucks.

[Botanical Aside: Two of my favorite lei flowers.
Pakalana a.k.a. Chinese violet = Telosma cordata, vine with small chartreuse flowers.
Pikake (literally "peacock") = jasmine.]

Alas, LMIYD is my only Cdrama to date, aside from one wuxia (two if you count the joint Korean-Chinese drama BICHEONMU / THE DANCE IN THE SKY, which I really enjoyed). I would love to see the 33-ep. Chinese version of BICHEONMU.**

I mentioned the wuxia in OT 447, Take #1, post 25.2.1.2, here amended:

Now that I’ve been watching sageuks, I’m getting interested is seeing more of the Chinese martial arts films (modern and ancient) after watching the late Chinese kung fu master and film star Yu Cheng-Hui in A BATTLE OF WITS with Choi Si-Won and Andy Lau, which was a lot better -- and easier to understand -- than I expected. After watching enough sageuk battles, the forms behind the swordplay are taking on a different meaning for me, a non-practitioner. Yu Cheng-Hui performed in the SHAOLIN TEMPLE films that are presently available on NetFlix.

** Um, that's not quite accurate. I've seen a bunch of Jackie Chan releases (who hasn't?) and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON when it debuted. But I was not into kung-fu movies back in the day -- nor shoot 'em up cop shows! As an Irish-American lass, now when I see martial arts performed in the context of historical events, I enjoy watching it a whole lot more, especially when the historical event or plot is adequately explained.

I have to remind myself that the internet and English language forums such as DramaBeans did not exist back in the early 80s when I used to walk past the Asian Cinema on Beretania Street in Honolulu. Nowadays it's so much easier to research the cultural and historical background to more fully appreciate and understand the stories.

Michykdrama, Aloha!

My true gateway sageuk was THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. I, too, have difficulty with Cast-Of-Thousands-itis... but I could keep track of the characters and sub-plots in SBH. Well-written, and gorgeous to view.

If you are watching OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN, you might want to see Seo Hyun-Jin in the title role in SBH. Echoes of Seol-Nan are evident in OHY AGAIN... and I mean that in the best possible way. SHJ was thoroughly captivating as the plucky heroine... Don't be scared off by 108 episodes... sez ye olde Sageuk Pusher. ;-)

Michykdrama...

Sorry about that tangent!

The only other thing I could add as an alternative to Kdramas is the thoroughly excellent Jdorama THE HOURS OF MY LIFE. A comment on the FATED TO LOVE YOU recaps here at DB mentioned it, and I loved it. Intense, but actually quite uplifting. Terrific acting by lead Miura Haruma, and the rest of the cast was dandy, too. It was interesting to me to notice the pacing, which to me was different from Kdramas... a sort of "jumping in feet first" intensity or something. I can't explain it. But I sure enjoyed it. ;-)

Hi Mermaid Scribbler and Pakalanapikake (your name is even prettier now that you have explained it)!
Wow! So many recommendations! ?

I'm not really into Saeguks/wuxia/historicals yet, somehow I don't get drawn into them as there are usually many side characters and sub-plots and it makes my brain hurt trying to figure out who-hates/loves-who or who-is-trying-to-overthrow-who ?

But im going to put the rest down under my ever growing list of to-watch dramas! Right after I start Liar game ? Sham sham comes to eat and The hours of my life sound like something I could get into ?

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! ❤️

BTW - It should be Shan Shan Comes to Eat (typo - sorry!), otherwise known as Boss and Me. Lots of tropes, but in the end, Shan Shan subtly becomes an independent woman who has matured enough to handle this fairytale-like love. That theme was very quietly done, and caught me a bit by surprise. It made the whole romance have more weight, and I liked it for that. It's long, but I think it makes for a better slow burn type of story.

Gu Man also wrote My Sunshine - a story about a couple that is separated and then brought back together. The director's cut is only four episodes, so the story is sometimes tricky to follow, however it was interesting.

I like her work, and you can read her online for free (I googled it and a few places online turned up). She has one about Wuxia (spelled?) games that is interesting, too. Her work has an interesting quality of tiny moments that are strung together in a unique way, rather than a DOTS-style of big sweeping romantic moments. Happy watching! ?

SHAN SHAN COMES TO EAT and MY SUNSHINE both sound good.

I'll take a good slow burn any day. I can relate to a gradual, organic shift in relationships better than the epic fairytale kind. Observing the turning points, especially the barely-perceptible ones, is great fun for me. -- Must admit that OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN is turning out to combine both those character development styles, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Two open threads is great, what's not to love about that!

After Ms. Temper ended, I didn't know what else to watch and I randomly came across a Jdrama called Hours of My Life (Boku no ita jikan I think?). I have never seen a Jdrama before but I thought it was great. It's a nuanced, realistic depiction of a young man diagnosed after college with ALS. It's heavy, but it has a strong undercurrent of hope. I have dealt with incurable illness/disability in my own family, so I could relate to it a great deal. It did not feel cliched to me, and it does not hit you over the head with "life lessons." Instead of presuming to have all the answers, it makes you think about life more than anything.

YES!

THE HOURS OF MY LIFE was referenced by some Beanies in a recap of FATED TO LOVE YOU, and boy, oh boy, was it good. Miura Haruma was excellent in the lead role. In actuality, the whole case was great. It was my first Jdorama, too, if you don't count Studio Ghible's MONONOKE HIME and GHOST IN THE SHELL. It left me feeling kind of meditative, which in my book is a very good thing.

Yeah, the acting from the cast was great. I commend the lead actor for taking that challenging role. Most of the time young actors take the awesome-handsome-hero roles (and nothing wrong with that, those roles are fun to watch!), but good on him for going outside the box.

You should watch One Litre of Tears....I still remember the days of me holed up in front of my big boxy PC watching this drama with a massive box of kleenex and tears...lots of tears....

there's something about the way japanese dramas hit the nail on the head when it comes to slice of life

Try The Memorandum of Kyoko Okitegami (very cute and feel good story)
or if you want a splice-of-life type drama try Mare (2015). It is one of my favourite and it will definitely not make you want to dive off a cliff.

Thanks for that rec! From the title alone, it seems I will definitely need to stock up on more Kleenex before I watch it. It seems they really are good at slice of life dramas. I love kdramas, they are exciting and fast paced, but it's also nice to watch an understated show once in a while.

When it comes to dramas with terminal diseases-themes, give it to Japanese to make it worth watching without you being hit with the life lessons.

The first JDramas with this theme that I watched and still my fave is Takuya Kimura's "Beautiful Life". It's one of the oldies (2000). But the feeling still lingers everytime I remember it.

My other faves including Ichi Ritoru no Namida (1 Litre of Tears) and this drama, Boku no Ita Jikan.

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today.

Oh wow, a second OT!! ....... You have to love that. Thanks Heads!

Watched this week:

Jackpot - Unfortunately, I'm finding that if the scenes don't include Choi Min-soo, I get terribly bored with this drama.  As a result, I'm only watching this in bits and pieces ...... and I may completely stop even doing that.

Master God of Noodle - Surprisingly, with the creepy vibe and all, it's quite good!

Entertainer - Just caught the first 2 eps of this.  It's good to see Ji Sung back.  Is it me or does he look looser/freer in his acting style nowadays?

Marriage Contract - Ji-hoon's dad ....... some of the stuff he says. Makes you wonder if he ever cared about either one or both of his own parents.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Loving Entertainer (unconditionally.my basket of puppies!Yes even Ji Sung too has become a puppy to be loved and protected. *Sigh*.Demented ain't I?) and Oh Hae Young Again (one sassy kitten to cheered on forever!).

Enjoying The Promise. Pretty pretty dresses. Lee Yuri could do with an occasional little smile on her face though. Her resting B**** face is getting a little too depressing :(

Thought giving My Amazing Boyfriend a try. Very cutesy show, but I am not loving it. Have a niggling suspicion that NIF (and watching it repeatedly many times) may have ruined my ability to enjoy chinese rom-coms?

Try Ode to Joy. NIF actors/actresses abound. Ups and downs of five women that live on same floor . Enough to keep us interested in what happens next.

OMG that sounds lovely. Ode to Joy, that is. I'm sipping NIF in measured proportions, have enjoyed the first 15 ep so far and will probably finish it. It has spiked my curiosity, though, being my first cdrama and all, to check out some other genres, but cdramaland seems like rough waters for a newbie, so your recommendation is just what I needed. Thanks!

@ eva,

I find surfing Cdramaland as rough-going as you do, too.. There are some truly excellent dramas out there, but there's a lot of hit and miss involved in the search for them. I also find that (perhaps because of the Chinese government's monitoring of the drama's content?) a lot of dramas force themselves to end nicely, however unrealistic the endings might be. At least, that's my take on how quite a number of the dramas I watched ended up faltering in their finales.

I heard The Disguiser (with a lot of NIF veterans) is good/great, and I'm intrigued by Ode to Joy and Amazing Boyfriend, cos of all the good comments I've been reading on OT and elsewhere.

Modern Cantonese dramas are mostly crappy (cos no money is pumped into the production, filming, etc.), but a few years back they collaborated with the Chinese to produce War and Beauty (also known as Beauty at War). THAT was a seriously awesome drama, which felt just the right length..and featured some great acting talent. Don't bother with season 2, but season 1 is a production that is hard to forget.

Who won't like two OTs in one week? Lol. Heads please make this mistake again. ?

I still having Ms Temper's withdrawal ?? Guess that I will rewatch Empire of Gold to see LYW and GS there.

Currently I love Oh Hae Yeoung and Master God of Noodles. Still following daily soap The Promise ( I want all Lee Yoo Ri's clothes). Also following a bit on Jackpot, Monster, GMB.

But I must express my disappointment towards Monster. I don't know, I am not to be blamed for having a high expectation because I do love the writer's past works.
For now, I am watching solely because of Jo BoAh & Claudia Kim. I cannot wait to see Jo BoAh's character to be developed. I hope she will not underused here. :) To be honest I had ff some scenes. For unknown reason, I kept skipping the leads scenes, especially the second male lead. This is not be a good sign I think. hmm

Yes probably because I am not too fond with the main actors. To add, the pace of drama is just a like a filler. They should actually make the story on the young actors in first 4 - 6 episodes. This drama had potential in the beginning, but things started go wrong after the adult appeared.

About to start Oh Hae-Young Again, the recaps have convinced me! It's my cup of tea for sure, though I would like to know why Eric's character is having those premonitions in the first place. My drama watching has been so dry & dull lately, haven't been watching anything but the daily The Promise (which is awesome by the way, peeps should check it out!) The show has definitely made me a fan of Lee Yu-Ri and Song Jong-Ho. (Park Ha-Na, who plays the antagonist female second lead, is also doing a wonderful job). But overall I'm just patiently waiting for Lucky Romance to premiere!!! ?⏳???

I definitely think Oh Hae-Young Again is going to explain the visions eventually, but probably not for a while? Eric's character is still trying to figure it out too so I guess that's why I'm content to wait and find out their purpose along with him. I'm surprised he hasn't tried asking a shaman/fortuneteller now that he knows he's not crazy though.

I keep hearing about The Promise and now that I know Song Jong-ho is in it, I have to check it out.

Forgot to mention that I also started watching the Chinese drama 'My Amazing Boyfriend', it's pretty darn good if I do say so myself. It's inspired by 'My Love From the Stars' but the feel is so different. The lead actress is hilarious and actually plays a smart, capable female character. The sound effects when the characters embarrass themselves are also hilarious. You find yourself thankful that in this drama the characters actually *ASK* the logical questions that both the character and the audience should be thinking about/discussing. None of the usual "why is this character so stupid, they should ask ABC question or look for the truth that's right in front of them. The characters actually *DO* that and don't have you yelling at the screen because they're so clueless. I will say this, if you don't like the sound of dubbing this aspect of the drama might annoy you bc it pretty obvious. The lead male is played by a Korean actor so that's the reason for the dubbing. Anyway I hope peeps check it out, it's really quite fun!

Hi, PlumWin...

Yeah, I do seem to be noticing background sounds more than usual.

I was wondering what sunlight shining sounds like... The whole scene was a Zen koan.

It took a while to bubble up to consciousness, but by the time I'd seen episode 4, it hit me that DK doesn't say a whole lot -- because he's listening. When he has something to say, he speaks. Kind of like Ernest & Julio Gallo: "We release no wine before its time." (Unless he's yelling at his relatives and employees!)

Now that you point it out, I do realize he says a lot more words when yelling. (Especially at his brother.)

Oh, and thanks for teaching me a new word - koan is a very appropriate word for that scene.

You're welcome, PlumWine!

If you want to see a film that is one big koan, I can highly recommend WHY HAS BODHI-DHARMA LEFT FOR THE EAST? Very meditative... I read some reviews and commentaries on it before watching, and later found the Wikipedia entry for it that explained the Buddhist imagery, and that made it even better. I went to sleep after watching it to let it seep into my soul.

I'm really glad I watched it, and will do so again.

You know, even little missteps are amusing and heartwarming like posting OT on Thursday. We are all human and these things just give us a chance to laugh it off and carry on.

Hooray! (Just finishing your cheer.)?

I agree-- I've been making more than my share of embarrassing mistakes lately, and it's comforting to see that even a goddess like Heads has missteps now and again. In addition to being a refreshing mistake, she gave us "double the pleasure, double the fun". *realizes that even when Heads makes a mistake, she makes things better ➡ finds mistake somewhat less comforting*

I'm sure this double OT will become one of those "remember the when..." stories that we remember fondly in years to come, like the time when DB got a DMCA notice while recapping The Drama That Shall Not Be Named, which resulted in the awesomeness of screencaps being illustrated by talented members of our community (including JB), and Dramabeans Nation standing up and showing what we're made of.

So-- thanks, Heads, for making this a special Friday the 13th that we won't forget. You're perfectly imperfect and you totally rock. Lol @ your song choice, btw.

You know, I feel remiss that I didn't (or may be I did and don't remember?) praising UEE for the terrific job she did. Yes, the others were great as well, but she had a stand out performance in this. At first I thought it would be awkward, but it all came together and wee, if you did not watch it give it a try. Idol actors suck? Well, maybe that is try for some, but for me, she pulled this off splendidly and I never felt like she was forcing her emotions. To me, they felt genuine so much so that my heart hurt watching her. It is a video of Rain and Kim Sun Ah practicing for Bad Guy - Tango version. YouTube recommended it, and I loved it :D :D

Watching this I kept having flashbacks of this awesome dance scene in MNiKSS:

That scene is hilariously cringeworthy and embarrasing. But I so feel for KSS. Don't we all wish we could dance beautifully and sexily. In my head, even I can dance like they do in movies, but in reality I have two left feet :P :D.
If I try to dance, I also end up with awkward moves and embarassing shuffles.. hahaha :D :D

Hello, all:

Happy Friday the 13th.

So, confession: I sometimes get more annoyed with unreality than I ought to. And I know that. So I try to check myself. But lately a few dramas have made me lose my patience. I'm still watching them, mind you. But yeah, they're infuriating me with the coincidence and the easy plotting. I want to scream out: "small world, isn't it!"

Plus the same ole same ole of repeated tropes can be annoying.

So: Oh Hae Young: I see nothing new in this. It's a fun story. And the family dynamics of our heroes is cute to watch. But I kinda know how this will all go and how it will all end. Of course we don't like dramas because they're unpredictable so I'll continue watching...but for me it's like going through the numbers.

God of Noodles: I'm watching this for the villain. It is definitely an uneven show. The villain's turn toward adultery was intriguing. Usually we meet villain with his mistress already set in place. We rarely see him being enthralled/negotiated into a passion. (I keep hoping he will learn what love is by being with this woman. I've been hoping a long time for a kdrama psychopath or a villain to get a heart.) But what bothers is is how everyone knows everyone else and how coincidences happen waaaaaaaaaay too often. It's just a bit much. Even for a kdrama.

Flower in Prison: I'm liking this a lot. I don't know what all is gonna happen. I'm not really up on this part of Joseon history but I have trust. Trust is an amazing thing. I watched the last episode last week and kept thinking, "Well, I know not where all this leads..but eh, it's building to something. This is a slow burn that will lead to wonderfulness." And I still believe that. So am happy with this.

I'm trying to watch a daily. It's Unusual Family (KBS TV on youtube.) I'd forgotten why I avoid dailies. They are seriously stressful. Especially if one has no one to discuss them with. Because there are some seriously selfish and sociopathic folks on these daily dramas and their antics just builds up one's blood pressure. I really have to keep reminding myself that "it's only a show, it's only a show. Carole, you do this to folks in your writing too, so hold on..justice will prevail." So 120 episodes from now I will get a payoff and Samwol will get her just deserts. But somehow wading through her evil...and the evil of all the villains/villainesses in dailies affects my sleep.

Awaiting Mirror of the Witch.

Have a great weekend, all.

I agree about Oh Hae Young it's entertaining show but as u said its predictable. I like the comedy in this show specially the sister and the parents
Master of noodles the only drama that i am enjoying atm even though what uou said is true it's weird how they are all connected but i am okay with it

The daily dramas is so stressful and you have to turn your brain and emotions off when you watch but you just can't, so I juat keep skipping episodes when i want to watch one

I'm hoping it'll turn unpredictable soon, with a good little twist, maybe with all that psychic thing he does. As for Noodles, I still like it. But not as much as I did. I'm still gonna watch because although it's uneven, there are these flashes of brilliance, especially with the villain.

I wish I liked Da Hae more. She is the typical gutsy, angry, do-what-she-feels-like-even-if-its-stupid girl one finds in these dramas. Her passionate nature supposedly makes her do stupid things, but these kind of female characters are often accepted while if a guy did this kind of weirdness we'd give up on him altogether. Something about it feels somewhat easy-pseudo-feminism. The heroine in Flower in Prison does gutsy passionate careless and angry in a way more respectable, likeable manner.

I think your right about Dae Ha, I can't understand how she put herself in the EVIL dean fearlessly it's what surprised me the most, also she has a lot of screening time those 2 ep, the main female lead didn't have much appreciate and Da Hae story sound like she should be the lead because there is so much to her story

I accept that we have all these people who all seem to be concerned with ONE great evil that has oppressed their lives. I can accept how obsessive ALL the characters tend to be. But sometimes I think I need to be convinced. The writer does a lot of stuff that we are supposed to simply accept and never quite sells it to me. For instance, kid goes to prison for murder and the saintly heroine (I think she's the heroine) accepts his sacrifice. We don't see what she knows about why he does it. We don't see too much of her struggle to let someone suffer for her in her place. All we know, really, is that the writer wanted this therefore this had to happen. We aren't even given a chance of kid getting a lawyer to defend him by saying he was saving a rape victim. I accept that. Hard though it is.

I accept hero being nasty to Da Hae for no good reason when she is in his restaurant. I accept heroine lawyer's conviction that she will become a lawyer. I accept everyone assuming that she will become a great lawyer. I accept Da Hae being nasty to heroine for no good reason as they coincidentally meet.

But seriously, you get into someone's house and the first thing you do is snoop around in the old man's house for something. WHY? What would she expect to find in comatose man's room? What would Big Bad be hiding there? And, if she is so passionate, why is she walking into the house of a guy who wants to murder her (but for some reason doesn't seem to want to?) Is she the only girl he's ever had mercy on? Is she and Dokku related to him in some way? And why is she snooping around without checking to see if there's a camera?

So yeah, I'm watching but it's hard to trust the writer or to feel that emotions and plot-points are well-earned.

I wanted to reply to your last comment but there is no reply button so i will reply here to your last comment

Thanks for writing your thinking,

Actually i never thought of what you pointed out, but while reading i was like oh yeah she has a point there, the only thing I've noticed that the writer wrote so many stuff and too many characters at once and all related to the main guy in a weird way

I hope you would write your thoughts every week about this drama, i enjoyed reading your thinking, thank you

Thank you! I tend to bounce back and forth between hating and loving a show so you'll be bouncing around with me. It also looks like Peeps will be recapping this show as well. So let's all three go wild with our analyses.

I wanted to reply to other comment of yours but no reply button in that one.

Perhaps because the show was so well executed, I missed those problem areas you have pointed out. Since Gil Do is a psychopath, I think it is not far fetched that he killed not a few but several people along the way. What is amazing is how he gets away all this while. The writer did try to address it by having Gil Do acknowledged it in his usual twisted way. He said he needs to get to that place so high that his sins won't matter. Something to that effect. So, I will accept his houdini stunts as part of dramatic licence.

As for "all these people who all seem to be concerned with One great evil that has oppressed their lives." I am going to look at the positive side and ignore the coincidences. For once, we don't have a lone hero trying to go against a big bad villain and magically assembles a motley crew bent on helping him in his revenge. Here, we get different characters with different motives. Heck, they might even turn against each other in the process.

The weakest link is Da Hae. She started out interesting but I am running out of patience with her. She is way too reckless and naive. Gong Seung Yeon was fine in Six Flying Dragons but she's showing her inexperience here in scenes which require more layered performance.

Yeah, I'm being patient with it as well. I tend to like underdog stories, though. and the fact that all the victims of our villain are all top of their jobs -- topdog in prison (who also is protected by gangster), top of her graduation class, top food critic, great food chef-- it's just hard to fully engage with the story. (I have no doubt the orphan with the old cart-pulling mom will turn out to be connected to our villain as well. Heck, his mom will probably know the villain.) When we have two victims researching the food critic and trusting in their cooking skills and smell skills to meet her, it's an eye-roller. And our sorrowing cook didn't have to be mean to her about her scent obsession. No matter how bitter he is, it's not part of his personality to want to hurt a stranger by belittling her obsession. He was made to be cruel simply to set up some stress to build up conflict. Which wasn't necessary. That's the kind of thing that bothers me.

I accept coincidences way more than I would like. Especially if there is some fate connection. But to connect to the humanity of a story, we need it to feel as real as possible. I like the idea of characters doing things for a true reason and not because the writer merely wants some plot point presented. So that's why the coincidences bother me. If I weren't patient with the show, I would've given up on it.

Hello everyone!

Dramabeans is such an international site! I hadn't realized this before, but last week's Beans of Wisdom revealed that there's a large Indian contingent here on DB, and when I looked at the user traffic information for the site, I realized that Beanies are everywhere!

So! I have a cultural question for Beanies outside of the USA: what does feminism look like in your country? What would you say are the greatest concerns of your feminist movement?

I am from the USA, and I know the goals and struggles of our feminist movement will be different from feminist movements in other countries.

A lot of the time, I think Americans have opinions about the status of women in other countries that are informed by our own US-ian experiences of feminism and sexism, and these opinions can be radically misinformed because we don't have the cultural context necessary to understand the unique struggles of women outside of the US.

For example, I think a lot of American women are horrified at the prevalence of plastic surgery in South Korea, and might see it as "anti-feminist". However, delve a little deeper, and you'll find that plastic surgery is viewed very differently in South Korea than it is in the US. It seems like it is more acceptable there, and that men and women alike engage in it (as opposed to it being -- or at least being thought of as -- a more "female thing" in the US).

So I was wondering: what does feminism look like in your country? What are the most important struggles for women's rights in your country right now?

I'd love to engage with feminists (or, if you're uncomfortable with that term, with equality-minded women) from all over the world.

Hey Andrea, India being a multi- cultural country with people of different religions coexisting, there are many opposing views on feminism. And I probably don't have the knowledge base to tell you about it all.

Currently, there is an ongoing struggle in India whereby women are protesting against the restrictions on them to enter some temples, all mosques and some other religious structures. But some are viewing it as a political move by 'one woman out for publicity'. It might actually be true but the struggle is real and timely.

The point however is that while fighting for your right to free entry is justified in all counts, for me they are basically seeking tiny recognition from religions that are inherently patriarchal. So they are still subscribing to patriarchy.

When my English Lit teachers had to tell us about feminism most of the examples were from the 3 waves of feminism in USA and Europe. There were very few instances taken from India or even Asia at large.

That however doesn't go to say that feminism doesn't exist here. We are fighting for equality in all spheres. However, its restricted to individual level and has not become as big a movement as elsewhere.

I dunno if you ever followed news about India but in December 2012 there was news of a gruesome rape of a young girl in the capital of India- Delhi. This led to such big scale protest that it has now become a landmark in India's struggle for equality and dignity.

I have come to this thread late so I don't know whether you will see this comment, but it was a nice departure from my usual kdrama centric comments and I thank you for this question.

You two Beanies left such kind comments to me on last week's Beans of Wisdom thread, but by the time I saw them, the thread was dead.

So I just wanted to say thank you very much to both of you, and to send you a warm Beanie smile from me.

Also, vongole, your descriptions of your boyfriend on that thread have me swooning. A fella who knows about and thinks about gender roles, and asks you if you feel comfortable with them? YOU HAVE FOUND THE CHOI HAN GYUL OF OUR GENERATION!!!

Just finished watching the first episode of Mirror of the Witch and I like it! I love how magic and witchcraft took center stage and the effects were good too. Some scenes made me go omg is that what it is?! I already care for the characters and that's saying a lot. I think I found my weekend drama. Kim Saeron's voice is soooo soothing and she's so pretty.

Will watch Dear My Friends later. I bet it would be awesome.

True! I had a thought when watching Mirror of The Witch, that the ambience of the drama is quite similar to Night Watchman's Journal, albeit better!

Still too early to judge but this drama definitely intrigues me. One question, is Kim Saeron is Yoon Shiyoon's twin? If that so, I can be onboard with age different issue they have.

I glossed over the first episode and it feels more like Moon Embracing the Sun 2 to me.
(A queen dowager ruling from behind the curtain. Head shaman with Black magic etc etc).

Kim Young-Ae is playing the same role she played in Moon/Sun. She is going to get a lot of hate here too.

Man, that was a strong first episode, still got goosebumps. It had a strong TMETS feel (just umm...darker?) which I don't mind since it started equally strong back then. If they don't screw this up, it's gonna be one hell of a ride in the coming months.

When I think that I'm growing out of dramas, reading here helps me realize it is an objective lull going on. So many are expressing difficulty finding magic after watching very good shows! Six Flying Dragons was that for me. I'm almost ready to watch it again!

There have been a few *good* shows... Signal and Memory come to mind, and some with some characters that kept me smiling, like Come Back Ajussi.

Right now, Oh Hae Young does have some magic I hope keeps going. That's the one that feels like the first feels of drama watching. :)

God of Noodles is dark and peculiar.

Hey guys! I never joined an OT before but finally decided to join in the fun!

After seeing so many recommendations for Oh Hae Young Again, I have decided to start that this weekend.

I watched the first episode to Ms. Temper but I stopped watching in the middle but I have been seeing so many comments on it, I just might try again.

I am currently watching Master: God of Noodles which is phenomenal! At least so far. Entertainer is also a favorite of mine because Ha Neul is seriously the best! Jackpot wasn't a favorite of mine but I am enjoying it a lot more now. Episode 9 was a BIG turning point for me.

I just finished Six Flying Dragons and I am obsessed with Yoo Ah In right now. I loved that show! I swear I have never felt so many emotions for one character. I see why so many of you were so out of it when it ended. I tried watching Jang OK Jeong Lives in Love but tbh after awhile I really couldn't get with the whole I love you so much so I'll do anything act. Didn't seem genuine to me.

For some people 1st episode might be boring but for me it was much more interesting.
For me it always is 1st 15 minutes of a show that makes or break it and i actually felt quite excited after all that water splash act. Usually Our Main female heroines taste water often by the hands of others but here Our Lady returned the favour back and same with the slap incident. They were trying to break a few kdrama annoying acts.

1st half is awesome but 2nd half as usual is annoying.

First time I comment at open thread.
I think I will drop Glamorous Temptation. I'm so tired with pilot and cast. That's not enough good. Now I'm watching with lighting speed (2x mode). Only watched 23 ep after 2 months.
I am wating for 'Dear My Friends', i hope it good
I watched ep 15 of Ms. Temper & Nam Jung Gi, can't wait for vietsub finale ep.
The Flower In Prison not good as I thought. Story so drama and not really logic. I don't stand Go Soo also lead when charactec was young. I will drop it.
Stills watching Five Children, I hope it end soon, can't wait for ending.
I download a lot of ep of Vampire Dectective but only watched 2 ep.
Monster, i think really good. The pilot not really logic but really interesting.

*Bad Friday when I get bad score on final exam on this year. I am student of Specialized in Literature (High School) but maybe i will be leaved it with bad score.* (Not Related)

Greetings, Bùi Quốc Khánh!

Thanks for your first post on the Open Thread. Welcome! I'm rather new around here myself. I'm very grateful that DramaBeans offers this wonderful forum -- a great place to meet many nice folks from around the world with whom I can discuss drama and cinema from Korea and other countries. It's like the United Nations, but a whole lot more fun. ;-)

I, too, am looking forward to DEAR MY FRIENDS, mainly because I enjoyed MISS GRANNY so much. Mal-Soon and her son the professor are the only older members of the cast with whom I'm familiar at this time.

OK, I missed my chance with the first open thread, but at least I was in time for the second.
What I watched and very thoroughly may I add, leaving me little time to write though I do read most of the recaps and Beanies' comments:
Another Miss Oh, a makjang idea turned into something wonderful.
Master of Noodles. Another almost "cinephile" take on a subject we've seen and seen and seen and seen... everywhere in the world done usually badly. Here the cast is exceptional with first and foremost my beloved Crocodile Cho Jae-Hyun and the writer is the person who did the superb Devil Rider.
My Lawyer, Mr. Jo, coming soon to an end. Park Shin-Yang acts his heart out reminding the industry what you miss when you ban for insignicant reasons people from dramas.
A Promise. All the cliches of the everyday dramas done with excellent acting giving a great result. After some seventy episodes, I find myself still invested.

I almost forgot. I finished (unsubbed) Ode to Joy. Ok, was I glad to see most of the Nirvana cast in modern (trendy) clothes? Yes. Did I enjoy anything else really? No, much ado about nothing as the bard would say leaving me rather disappointed mumbling "so? That was it?". What did I expect? Another Nirvana of All Quiet or Changsha? Hell, yes! Nevertheless if the true point of the drama was to gather enough financing through ppl for the next "Nirvanesque" project, I can live with that.
Have a pleasant Sunday.
