Oh Snap! Showered in sunshine, petals, and ice cream for Beautiful Gong-shim
by javabeans
Okay, show of hands: Who’s going to be tuning into SBS’s light-hearted weekend drama Beautiful Gong-shim purely to see if Namgoong Min can smile without seeming murderous, and act happy without somehow convincing you he’ll snap and become a raging, amoral lunatic at first provocation? I know he’s played nice dudes before (though I never found him that memorable as such), but he’s just so gooooood at being psychotic that I don’t know if I can see him differently now.
Well, only one way to find out! Beautiful Gong-shim premieres on May 14.

Maru!? Wow! I loved that show! (Can You Hear My Heart, yes?!) I liked the male lead, but NGM stole my heart as the Big Brother. I think that is the first time that I noticed his acting. He really stole the show (at least for me)!

Yessss Maru oppa was my gateway to NGM too! He was semi twisted and evil in that show but I still loved him to bits. I think some of that love came from his childhood background story too but gah NGM's eyes just convey so much emotion. His smile is also filled with emotion...I'm not sure that makes sense but he somehow always looks like he's battling a bazillion inner demons when he's smiling. His smile can go from friendly sunbae/oppa who will leave you cute encouraging secret notes to can/will secretly kill you for fun and then dance on your grave in seconds.

That's a crazy description :) but very apt! I have only seen NGM in The Girl Who Sees Smells... and he got the sunshiny-creepy vibe so right!

Wow... that description shocked me at first but...I found myself surprised because, damn, you are right (!!) I couldn't have say it better, like, wow, impressive description.
(Also I remember that the first time I saw him was in One Fine Day with Gong Yoo, and yeah, I liked him, he was sweet. But in CYHMH? DAMN, I was like "YEAH, GIVE ME MORE BROMANCE ANGST, I'M IN PIECES ALREADY BUT I DON'T CAAAAAARE~!!". I mean, the main romance was good, and sweet and angsty, but for a time I was there for the bromance angst, that was my catnip (and at the same time I was like "I'm going to Hell for this, I know")

In that drama, he got the best roles. It was very complicated and twisted.. That was the first time I noticed him too. I hope he does those roles often (Mia of good/evil types)

Haha this is like Shin Sung-Rok playing the nice guy in Trot Lovers... I only saw a few clips of TL but I had to laugh because he just couldn't convince me that he wasn't a murderous villain! Have seen in him You From Another Star and Liar Game, BTW... I hope that explains it. ^^
Namgoong Min would probably make the switch better, he doesn't look overly villainous, bad as his past roles have been.

I went MLftS > TL > LG > Lof6y with Shin Sung Rok. After his 3rd? consecutive dorky move within a few minutes, I had no problem believing his cutesy character in TL ~~~ when he says good night to Eun Ji in English *swoon*
If anything it was hard to think he was even in LG but he brought it! Even more than he did in MLftS. When I wandered upon Lof6y, I was pleasantly surprised to see the actor but totally against the heroine's interest in him. Did she not know what he was capable of doing?! Did she not realize the danger she was putting herself in? "It's just a rom com, Rina." "That's what they want us to believe. He's going to kill them all. And somehow the audience." ~~~ But I didn't turn it off ;)
Park Bo Gum is also doing a similar thing with his career. I went N'sC > IRY > R88. I wasn't having trouble shaking off his IRY character because I got introduced to him as a nice guy. But Taek was sickingly sweet to me.
With Namgoong Min, the only drama I've seen him in is Unemployed Romance. I'm excited for this project. And I'm even more interested in watching "Remember" after to see what everyone is discussing. I wonder how much he'll frighten me with this character fresh in my mind.

The first drama I saw him in was "Murder Hotel" (or whatever it was called.) And he was the 2nd lead. I have a soft spot for 2nd leads. So when I saw him in Smelly Girl and Remember, I just thought, "wow, so he can play villains, too!"

Shin Sung Rok was outright floofy in 99.9% of Trot Lovers, except someone really pissed him off and he used the Scary Oppa Death Glare exactly once and it was 100% effective.

It is weird to me how the really really really bad villains usually end up being super sweet hearts in real life. I watch something, I hate them with every single cell in my body, then I find out there are actual saints. Cue: Loki in Thor. Even the guy who gave me the UBER creeps in My love from another star and Liar game, and then they turn out to be softies XD
And then you have the super adorable guys, who you just wanna give all your love to. And they turn out to be asshats. Cue: Kim Young Kwang of D-day and Pinocchio. (The heartbreak was real with this one)
You really really reallyyyyyyyyyyy cannot judge a person from their character. I know we do it a lot... I know I do.

Talked about how he hated fat and ugly girls.... in an interview with a magazine squarely aimed at teenage girls. Because teenagers are such troves of self-esteem and not at all vulnerable to mean comments that they could interpret as belittling them even when it wasn't addressed to them personally.

That's so true, it seems villain characters actually turn out surprisingly good in real life... or maybe that's just because we're so used to thinking they are bad guys that seeing a good side of them is amazing.

I so agree! I hated Jang Hyun-sung's character in Signal so much that I couldn't help but to feel like punching his face every time I see his photos... Then I watched Return of Superman and I realised he's such a nice dad in real life. (Lol, a little helpless and clumsy, but so cute.)

The 'dogs' controversy... and, Depp later making fun of the apology video. Like I said, I appreciate (don't know yet if this should be in past tense!) his thoughtful gestures and he generally comes across as a nice guy in his interviews etc. But, the apology and what followed was rather jarring.
I guess I was just so convinced of his awesomeness that any chink in the armour turned out to be that much more of a disappointment.

Lol, these posters are so cute. I just realized I actually came to know Namgoong Min in his more antagonistic role in Can You Hear My Heart? so yes, I would say he is good at playing the knife rather than the butter knife. But, he was also a hoot in that short drama Unemployed Romance—who could forget the infamous rice cooker scene where he gives it a hug and praises it's hard work?—so I'm loving this and gonna watch the heck out of this show, I think.
I am also loving his homebody couture!

Whenever you stated, "...see if Namgoong Min can smile without seeming murderous, and act happy without somehow convincing you he’ll snap and become a raging, amoral lunatic at first provocation?" I laughed SO hard!
Seriously, though, Nam Goong Min and Park Bo Gum are two of the sweetest people in real life...but they are excellent actors. Their takes on psychopaths are amazing. I hope that they continue to mix it up and play good guys, bad guys, crazy dudes... grey areas. They are so amazing to watch. Just excellence in action.

I'm totally all in for this. Partly because I want to see him pull off a character that's nice and good from the beginning to the end, no hiccups (looking at you Can You Hear My Heart), and partly because yippee! He's not a chaebol. Hahaha. I'm totally feeling his scruffy look in the trailers and the posters, even the bowl cut. If that's the price to pay for him not playing as a Chaebol, I shall willing take it :).

Apart from the age factor, Namgoong Min and Park Bo Gum do seem to be going for a similar career arc. They started off with playing nice, sweet characters. Then they played career defining roles of psychopaths, which left us shivering but still asking for more. (Although Bo Gum's Min was a better psychopath because he was willing to change- eventually)
Now Bo Gummie played the adorable Taekie and Nam Goong Min is up to play this cute character. Oh and the meanwhile we have seen them in variety shows, showing their adorable real- selves (hopefully).
I really hope this show is as successful for him as Reply 1988 was for Bo Gum.

He seems pretty happy for someone who has been sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit. I hope he and the girl who's "warm-hearted with no prospects" (that made me laugh so hard the previous post) stay happy...these rom-com characters are highly unpredictable; they start off real bundles of joy, and end up miserable and depressed Debbie Downers with faces longer than the Han River.

to think that there was a time when i thought he had the sweetest, most angelic smile on a man i'd ever seen. that was i need romance. now when he smiles i shiver a little. and all it took was two villain roles in the span of the same year!

I'm totally buying it, because to me, Namgoong Min's smile totally transforms his face, it's so disarmingly goofy (slightly Laurel and Hardy, actually). He's also such a talented actor that I have confidence in his ability to I sell any character he takes on. I loved his portrayal of the wounded and complicated Maru in CYHMV, whose healing was so trnsformative as to be awe inspiring. Definitely looking forward to this, and hoping rom-coms like this will minister much needed rain to the long drama dry spell I've been experiencing for months.

After reading some of the comments and how people are saying it's interesting that the actors who tend to play these villainous roles end up being great people in real life, has me thinking. Because they tend to play these villainous roles do they have to try extra hard to seem like good people in real life? When you see a show with a hero you tend to project that heroism on the actual actor themselves. The same when a person is type-cast as a villain. I've read articles where actors who typically play villains will have people come up and swear or throw stuff at them, like that's who they are in real life. So to counter that do they have to be extra diligent to show they are good people in real life compared to your actors who always play heroes?

" if Namgoong Min can smile without seeming murderous, and act happy without somehow convincing you he’ll snap and become a raging, amoral lunatic at first provocation?"
For me, he already proved this on We Got Married!!! I remember watching it and desperately hoping he'd get the chance to star in a more comedic and romantic role eventually. He really surprised me.
He was even super cute and charming when his "wife" on WGM cameo'd on Secret Hotel. I felt like I was suddenly watching a different drama that I never knew I wanted.

I've only seen Namgoong Min in I Need Romance 3 and My Secret Hotel, and he was a very similar character there--a guy who seemed to genuinely like the heroine, but had other priorities he put above her (although I didn't finish Hotel, so I don't know what happened there), so I have trouble believing in him being overwhelmed or swayed by feelings of affection. However, these screens of him in a hoodie go a long way toward making him more accessible, and made me realize he's usually always impeccably dressed.

His acting ability is really good and I really did want him in a lead role from way back, but with an excellent script.
He was in a family drama too...
