Kim Go-eun and Yoon Yeo-jung warm hearts in Canola

Feel-good family film Canola (Korean title: Grandma Gye-choon) premiered on May 19 and surprisingly came out of the gate in second place at the box office, amidst current box office hits The Wailing and Captain America 3: Civil War. Yoon Yeo-jung (Dear My Friends) stars as the adorably spirited Granny Gye-choon and Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap) plays her troubled teenage granddaughter Hye-ji.

Twelve years ago, Jeju diver Grandma Gye-choon lost her granddaughter, and has been searching for her ever since then. By chance, homeless orphan Hye-ji chances upon an ad that Grandma Gye-choon put out for her granddaughter. The two are reunited and the movie is the heartwarming story of how they get to know each other, and adjust to living together all over again.

Grandma Gye-choon still sees Hye-ji as her little baby, and Hye-ji feels restricted by the sudden protection. But their cautious steps toward each other blooms into a beautiful relationship. The obstacles in their path to growth let viewers ponder the real meaning of family and the value of knowing that you have someone who will always be on your side.

Also in the movie are Shinee’s Min-ho (Medical Top Team) who appears as a classmate and possible love interest to Hye-ji, and Ryu Joon-yeol (Answer Me 1988) who is a boy from her past.

In the midst of so many summer action thrillers and horror movies, it’s nice to see that sentimental family film Canola has carved a special place in the hearts of the Korean audience.

"In the midst of so many summer action thrillers and horror movies, it’s nice to see that sentimental family film Canola has carved a special place in the hearts of the Korean audience."

That is so true! There is no shortage of action thrillers and horror movies in Korea's big screen but there is very few light and heartwarming films to balance it out.

Kim Go-eun and Han Ye-ri are two of the most talented young lead actress in the film industry. Looking forward Go-eun's "Canola" and Ye-ri's "The Hunt" (in June) with Jo Jin-Woong and "Chunmong" with director Zhang Lu.

"....current box office hits The Wailing and Captain America 3: Civil War"

Captain America made over 60 million in Korea in just 3 weeks. That is amazing for a foreign film!

Hwang Jung Min continues his box office success with "The Wailing." He is unstoppable and I'm loving it.

Civil War won't break the 10 million viewer mark but it's done better than any other Marvel film that wasn't Age of Ultron (which was helped along by being partly filmed in Seoul). I'm headed for a third viewing tomorrow, I'm still not over it.

Hwang Jung-min is pretty much box office gold right now, which is awesome. Ode to my Father isn't really my cup of tea but it's good to see such a talented actor getting some shine.

I thought Ultron was boring from first appearance. He was there and he was evil. Scarlett Johansson's pregnant belly was more interesting.
If I paid attention I'd probably like it but I'm not watching that movie again.

Wow, three times? I guess I know what you are getting for Christmas.

Hwang Jung Min will have to beat his own movie "A Violent Prosecutor" with either "The Wailing" or "Azura" for the year's #1 spot lol.

yeah, Ultron really wasn't interesting as a character/villain, and after Loki in the first one that was a distinct letdown. Plus they went on all kinds of random character tangents like the Hulk/Black Widow love line (meh).

Civil War isn't as great as Winter Soldier but it does have a good villain and a plausible central conflict which really doesn't take much effort to believe in.

I think A Violent Prosecutor is already this year's #1 at the Korean box office? Hwang Jung-min pretty much has it in the bag already, but beating his own record would be doing it in style.

0

“A Violent Prosecutor” is the current #1 spot but it's not even halfway through the year yet and it's only around 66+ millions.
The summer action flicks usually make the most money. "Train to Busan" have shot. I think it's only R-15.

HAHAHA the girl who plays Kim Go Eun's friend in this movie also played her friend Bora in Cheese in the Trap. LOL

RISE KIM GO EUN. My love for her is boundless. Also, the sheer range in her acting. I saw A Muse yesterday, and her character didn't have a shadow of Seol (not to mention she was completely nude in a few scenes, which was highly in contrast to Seol's touch-me-not vibe.) And I'm fairly sure her Coin Locker Girl character is nothing like her character in Canola. I just find her so incredibly charming and natural. She's fast becoming one of my absolute favorites.

Can you believe that A Muse aka Eungyo was her first movie ever? She was impressive from the very beginning.
I watched it for Park Hae-Il and Kim Moo-Yul but she stole it.

I found out later that she'd apparently never before acted in an actual non-college-theatrical production prior to Eungyo, which makes her performance even more impressive. No wonder she swept the awards that season. She has such a distinctive aura.

seriously, she should have been to Chungmuro what Jlaw is to Hollywood - I feel like in any other country (including my own), she would have been that huge.

Hell, with her talent she could have been the female equivalent of Kim Woo-bin. Maybe part of it was that she chose to seek out challenging parts and not go down the path of seeking to endorse every product in the supermarket but the netizen comments I see about her looks and acting make me wonder if everyone's just drunk.

I've stopped reading comments about her because they just make me angry (CIIT comments in general make me angry, because they keep repeating the same, tired patterns, and I loved the drama and its characters to distraction, despite all it's flaws, and I feel like all the comments about how the director should never direct again and no actor except PHJ should ever act again in anything is completely OTT-- CIIT when it was good was the best that kdrama has to offer. I want to see much more of that and maybe better execution in the dramas those people make here onwards- not for them to leave the industry.)

But it's so true re: the comments about her looks and acting. When I first saw her pictures, I thought she was cute, and that's it. But from the very first episode of CIIT, from the first few frames, I was utterly and completely charmed, and found her so much more attractive than I've found most actors. I feel the same about Jung Yumi, who is my other favorite. I love Kim Woo Bin, but I feel like he hasn't taken on anything that showcases his range, because he plays a lot of similar character with similar vibes, so I think, despite not being anywhere near as popular, Go Eun def has that over him.

Cheese ultimately let itself down and badly, so I can't even be mad at people who are mad at it, considering I was one of them.

But the criticisms against Kim Go-eun took a really weird pattern - people complained about her looks and acting before the drama, loved her once it was actually airing (and she was unscathed in the mess until some rather unfortunately-worded interviews), and now, post-interviews, people have gone back to calling her names again.

Meanwhile, people are far nicer about the first teaser of Uncontrollably Fond and its leads in general, despite the fact that neither of them (female lead in particular having been the pits in previous acting projects) have so far displayed even a shred of the talent in Kim Go-eun's pinkie toe, despite having begun their acting careers before her. Like the standards are so much lower for them, it's funny.

and I see similar comments about IU, who isn't as spectacularly chameleonic as Kim Go-eun but has turned in a strong of solid, even well-praised performances - but offcreen factors have people behaving as if they've got selective amnesia about the fact that she's actually a decent actress, and slating her upcoming drama for it. It's ridiculous.

I completely agree with u pogo.
and I really reaaaaaalllllllllyyyyyyyyy...... want Kim Go Eun to get all that recognition and appreciation for her work.
Keeping the end of CITT apart, we all will agree that she was fabulous , really amazing, people should give credit to her for her acting. I truly want her to win the award. Awards are given as an appreciation for your work right, she should be given one.

0

True, I'm sure I would have been much more mad had I actually read the Webtoon or been very invested in Seol/Jung or Jung as a character, which I wasn't. To have the adaptation of a favorite ruined unexpectedly can be awful. But I've felt that the WORST DRAMA EVER and LET'S NEVER TALK ABOUT IT tags are fairly unnecessary. It was set to reach legend status in its genre, but even post-messing up, it still scaled pretty high overall.

I don't know what actually was said in the Goeun interview because she has said that it was unfortunately edited, so I don't want to take sides either way. And it doesn't change the fact that I find her extremely, ridiculously talented and just want to watch her do a lot more dramas. It makes me sad that she was disliked so much over it. Maybe this movie can cement her acting status.

Lol, I haven't seen Suzy in anything except Dream High where I liked her because they made her weak points (blank stare, expressionlessness etc.) her strengths by writing them in the character, which made it funny, but yes people do seem to believe she's better now. I guess Uncontrollably Fond will show us how much she's improved. I think it's possible for her and KWB to have great chemistry despite the acting. I hope that's the case at the very least.

IU though, impressed me so much as Cindy that I now stan for her and look forward to her works. I think the problem with her is her idol image, which makes people typecast her into cutesy roles, so I'm glad that Cindy broke that mould, because I think she has serious range and acting chops and deserves a chance to showcase them. Like, when I think about it, awkward, painfully shy Pilsuk shares nothing in common with loud, openly love-struck Botong, who shares not much in common with tsundere Cindy. Cindy and Pilsuk and Botong are ALL awkward, but they're not awkward at all in the same way, thanks to IU. Pilsuk and Cindy and Botong are ALL love-struck but show it in totally different ways, thanks to IU. I can actually easily imagine her as a gangster, or an ennui-struck housewife or something, going by her music videos, and I hope she gets the chance to play different characters in the future as well. I can't predict if she'll be good in saeguks as well, but I'm willing to try it for her.

I love J Lawrence in Winter's Bone but I think she got popular way too fast. I hate to see her become a money maker instead being hired for her talents.

I think Kim Go-eun is in a good spot in Chungmuro. She is still young and she being loved and respected for her talents by movie fans and critics. Her time will come.

It took a while for Ha Jung Woo and Hwang Jung Min etc to get to where they are at. It wasn't a secret that they were talented, it was just a matter of time with the right project.

I got teary eyed after listening to Ha Jung Woo's interview when he was being turned down for a movie role because they thought he wasn't good looking.
I'm so glad he showed them that talents > good looks.

All these stupid and negative comments about Kim Go-eun were generated after she appeared in CIIT by freaking drama fans. The majority probably have never watched her in any of her movies or they would know that her talents was being wasted in CIIT.

@Zoe - I hadn't actually read the webtoon beyond chapter 15 or so, so my investment was really in the drama and in Seol - and as a drama fan, I could really feel how hideously off-key the story turned in its last quarter. I'm still astonished at how a dark but tonally rather low-key/realistic heroine-centric dramedy devolved into full OTT kdrama melo with the central heroine herself ending up sidelined in favour of a walking checklist of tropes. It just didn't feel organic at all.

With Suzy, you nailed the problem - her acting range so far is so limited that scriptwriters and PDs have to bend over backwards to accommodate her lack of ability. And I'm not really sure if she brings anything to the table to make her performances worth it as a viewing experience. Park Hae-ryun is a fantastic writer but I Hear Your Voice was a far better drama than Dream High imo, simply because she wasn't limited by any of the cast.

With IU, it's the opposite - she's risen to the challenges of fairly demanding roles, and done it consistently despite her very short filmography. Cindy in Producer was not a role that had to be dumbed down or limited to suit her acting range. And it was her arc that ended up stealing the show, which practically never happens with second female leads. Part of it is down to Park Ji-eun giving her the room to play, but IU deserves full credit for pulling it off, and I really hope she's able to do it again with Scarlet Heart even if I'm not enthused by cdrama remakes.

@Kiara - Jlaw might be getting a touch overexposed (and imo it's ridiculous how she ends up taking roles way too old for her) now, but her career went to a really sweet spot after her first Oscar nomination, and she gets first look at almost any major movie script in Hollywood now. I'd love for Kim Go-eun to have options on that level, and for her career to not be hostage to what insane netizens say about her looks.

@pogo

The problem is there's not enough roles for the 20s in Chungmuro so it's going to take a while.

The top filmmakers are making movies with the top actors in mind.
If she was a female Song Kang Ho she would be getting roles worthy of her talents so I do agree with you.

It's a long way to the top but once she gets there, it'll be for the rest of her career with the likes of Jeon Do-Yeon etc.

Yes, yes, YES to everything! I've completely fallen head-over-heels for her! She's got so much natural, raw talent and she's so charismatic as an individual and an actress. She's definitely become one of my absolute favs.

There's something so incredibly charming about her! Like, some people just light up the screen when they're on it, and it's just hard to pinpoint what makes them click or what attracts you to them, regardless of the character they play, and whatever it is, she has that in spades.

Totally! I think it's just her down-to-earth personality that's really attractive, welcoming and relatable. Of course, that and her chameleon-like acting that allows her to completely transform into different roles and characters. I'm just really impressed and infatuated with her. I just finished watching her on Happy Together and it was such a fun episode! She sang, too! Gah, now I want to see her play a singer. I really wanna see her on Running Man! Her and Park Hae-jin! Hee. But yeah, I think she's so cool and talented. I can't wait to see her next project–hopefully it's another drama!

It takes some serious reminding to remember that the same person plays her characters in Eun-gyo, Monster, Coin Locker Girl, and Cheese.

I've heard complaints about her sageuk acting but honestly it just feels like a lot of nitpicking and her being held to higher-than-usual standards for young actresses since she was on fire right out of the gate. (I sometimes think being good from Day 1 is its own curse, people expect nothing short of perfection - while absolute suckage gets praised like it's Oscar-worthy if the person subsequently learns to form even one faial expression)

Yes! Literally everything about her changes when she plays different characters; her style of walking, talking, are just all so different. I saw her for the first time in CIIT and Seol's awkward vibe was so pronounced and out there that I used to feel awkward right with her. The way she held herself and sort of drew into herself and had that slightly paranoid air made me feel slightly protective of her. And then you watch Eungyo, who is completely uninhibited, who clearly knows the effect she has on the people in the film and plays along, and the way she lets herself loose, drapes herself over so many chairs and beds, etc., is almost the complete opposite of Seol- and yet equally believable and natural.

I couldn't figure out what people had been criticizing her for before CIIT, so I checked and yes, apparently it is her saeguk acting. I've never seen her in one (I've never seen one in general- I guess Scarlet Heart: Ryeo shall be my first), but I don't find it difficult at all to believe that what you're saying is probably true, esp because I have seen effervescent praise for people who were terrible earlier and improve even a little.

Aww, this looks so touching. It's reminiscent of the first Korean movie I ever watched, The Way Home, which is still one of my favorites. I love YYJ and KGE, so I'm very much looking forward to this.

Btw, I realize that those lovely yellow flowers are most likely Canola blooms, but calling the film "Canola" seems funny to me as I've only ever heard "canola" refer to canola oil (the word "Canola" comes from Canada + oil, and refers to a low-acid variant of rapeseed oil).

Though I'll be the party pooper and say they're both far too well-known to be leads in that series, they tend to go more for unknowns/people NOT known to be good actors. And we haven't had a Busan-set series since 1997 (wonder if they'll ever move out of Seoul now?)

On another note, ever since I read that Gong Yoo said he wanted to work with Kim Go-eun (in an interview earlier this year), I can't help but hope that he suggested her for his new Goblin drama. I mean, talk about good timing, no? Though, honestly, while I was completely onboard with the idea of her being a eunuch for Moonlight (curses!), I don't have any idea on how she'd fit in with the roles described in Goblin... I guess I just wanna see her in a new drama already, and ugh, to have both Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun in one drama, I'd watch the heck outta that.

Canola is only showing at 525 screens so we are not going to get big numbers. As of yesterday the total admission was 149,898.
The Wailing will be around 1400 screens for a big movie with a lot of buzz.

I don't think Canola had a big budget. It should be over 1million by this weekend so I don't think it's going to be a flop.

Like her acting roles, Kim Go-eun has also been through a lot of different hairstyles–and I think she pulls them all off very well. Her new and current pixie cut is actually due to the fact that she wanted to chop off her locks that were damaged from having them colored so much for Cheese.

I loved the pre-Raphaelite look she had as Seol, though apparently the repeated dye and perms damaged her hair. But it looked so gorgeous, especially the way it contrasted with her yellow and pink sweaters.

The costume designers really did a fantastic job there - she looked like an actual university student whose sense of style was instinctive and rather personal, instead of being trend-driven or purposefully dowdy. Like, you can have a brain and still have a favourite sweater that goes beautifully with your hair. (bonus for livable shoes)

I honestly didn't know that was her hair, I thought it was a wig, it was too gorgeous to be true!

And YES, the clothes were spot on, they're exactly what I would wear in Uni (although I do spend a lot more time in jeans than long skirts; but I've always wanted to be able to pull them off.) It was so natural, that it just gave me a strong college vibe, like she was someone I knew. And thank god they didn't go the way of purposefully dowdy as a signifier for intelligence, because it made her look even more distinctive and atypical of dramas because it was so typical of life.
