B1A4’s Jinyoung in talks to join Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

The good news is that we may finally have a second lead in fantasy-youth-romance-sageuk Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, after BtoB idol Yook Sung-jae (Village: Secret of Achiara) dropped out of contention. I’m a liiiiittle wary of B1A4 idol Jinyoung (Warm and Cozy) being that replacement, though. Not all idols are created equal, KBS!

According to the drama production, Jinyoung is currently considering, with decisions not yet finalized. The role he is up to play would form the third leg in the love triangle with series leads Park Bo-gum (Answer Me 1988) and Kim Yoo-jung (Angry Mom). Based on a popular web novel with over a million readers, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is set in late Joseon in the time of Crown Prince Hyomyeong (Park Bo-gum), the young genius who falls in love with the young woman disguised as a eunuch who enters the palace (Kim Yoo-jung).

I’m ambivalent on Jinyoung’s casting, though willing to see how he manages in the role; I expect the drama to make him extra appealing to make up for the fact that he won’t get the girl. (Nothing like a lovelorn second lead character to endear you to an actor!) I didn’t care for him in the youth music drama Persevere, Gu Hae-ra despite really enjoying the uplifting show because I didn’t connect with his character and didn’t feel he did, either. He had barely anything to do in Warm in Cozy last year, but I do recall him being endearing and funny as the rocker grandson in the quirky comedy Miss Granny, so there’s that thread of hope.

Moonlight Drawn By Clouds will be a Monday-Tuesday drama following medical mystery Beautiful Mind, and premieres on August 1.

If they are dead set on casting an idol they should at least cast those with potential. I think Lee Jong-Hyun could handle a supporting sageuk role.

Probably too old to play opposite Kim Yoo Jung, no? He's a 90er, she's 99er.

He definitely DOES NOT have the charisma & likeability factor that sungjae has as an actor but maybe he'll surprise us? Regardless, I wish they would cast someone a little less pretty as the second male lead. Idk why they seem to be reaching for an Idol actor either???

I really like the actor that played one of the friends in kyungsoo's drama pure love/unforgettable. The one that was called sangdol (?) and wanted to be an athlete. He's also a 95liner (like sungjae). I wish they would give other young actors a chance rather than always looking to cast idols when it comes to younger roles.

If they want to cast someone from his group, why they did not cast Baro instead ? This chingu sure can act and I think he'll play the role well. That 1st episode he played in Master of Noodles gave me shivers.

I actually don't think he did that bad in Persevere Goo Hae Ra. It was a pretty questionable drama after the first 3 or so episodes and the writing + directing made it hard for any of the actors to do good. I don't know if he'll ever be a great actor, but I think he could become at least a decent one. There are lots of pretty unwatchable idol actors and he's at least not as bad as that.

And even though I'm 100% onboard with wanting more young actors like Kwak Dong Yeon getting more shots at good roles, simply wanting someone else who's more experienced seems contradictory. They all start out inexperienced.

I am a new JY fan. I found JY a good singer. His voice is so smooth. The songs he sand in Persevere Goo Hae Ra impressed me a lot and I listened to them many times. I particular like "Oh, My Love, The Day I Meet You, and I am in Love." He sang so beautifully bending his voice to others. Kaybee, you are right, everyone has to start out inexperienced. I am glad that Jinyoung has done well in this drama. KBS has found the right guy. To me, JY is not an idol, he is an artist with kind personality.

I absolutely adore Jinyoung as a composer, singer, wonderful human being and a member of B1A4 (He's absolutely ethereal in real life too)

but this. Hmm. I do know that he's had a bit of acting training here and there, he was very decent in She is Wow, but not.. wow. lol
I couldn't make it through Gu Haera & Warm/Cozy so I've not got much to say about his performance there.
Baro is definitely the stand out actor of the group so I think if they were very insistent on getting an idol (which they clearly are) ia they should have called him up instead.
Call me selfish but I really want Jinyoung to focus on music production instead because we need that new B1A4 album asap.
I'm not totally against him taking a chance on this and if he's improved, that's great, but as I see it for the moment, Bogum is totally going to out act him.
Take it or leave it, I want to trust Jinyoung's judgement so I hope that he makes the right call on this.

I am glad that you trust Jinyoung to make the decision. Now, he has proved that he can act and he has earned the Best New Actor award. I also see that PBG was not able to outshine him. PBG has become so popular through this drama but JY also received lots of love from those who watched this drama. I am one of his new fans because of this drama.

PBG is stiff. I watched I remember you. He doesn't give me that chill factor when he played as the killer. I'm pretty much convinced witj DO acting as a psycho.

And with Jinyoung also. Korea have many talented young actors.Comeon dramagod. Cast the good ones

While I was moved by PBG in IRY, I agree that DO's performance stood out way more. After finishing the show and reading comments online I was really taken by surprise that all anyone seemed to talk about was PBG's acting. For me DO and SIG completely stole the show.

I am of the opposite. I do agree that DO was amazing and was actually disappointed in Choi Won-Young's acting because I felt like he didn't live up to DO's performance. But I was absolutely blown away by PBG and thought he totally stole the show. SIG was good but he honestly had an easy role to play and his character wasn't anything special (I thought he was much better in High School King of Savvy). PBG had such a complex character and he played it perfectly. I actually voted for PBG in the year end beanie awards because I was so blown away, especially since I wasn't that impressed with him in Naeil's Cantabile.

*IRY SPOILERS MIGHT OCCUR BELOW. I tried my best but might not have succeeded, so procceed with care* (:

I completely agree that CWY was a bit disappointing and didn't match DO's level.
But I found SIG's acting here much more captivating than in HSKoS. Especially the first episodes where his character was so ambigious and he was full of selfdoubt were acted out so well. I don't think it was an easy role to play. While there are a lot of cold-on-the-outside-fuzzy-on-the-inside main male leads in kdramas, his character was still very different and much harder to make likeable. His warm and vulnerable side was mostly shown through his relationship with his brother, a guy so awful in many ways that no one would ever want to meet him irl and his cold side even goes to the length of sometimes being happy when on a crimescene, looking at a dead guy, because "oh wow, this is such a fun mystery that challenges my high IQ". It really takes so much to make him sympathetic, even if the writing matters here, the actor needs to be doing his job expertly as well. Of course, it's just as hard (and harder) to make a character like PBG's likeable and I think he did an excellent job. But I was still more captivated by the other two.

It's funny how subjective an actor's appeal/skills can be. Maybe whether or not you like a singer's voice is equivalent to it? Laymen will argue about the tone of voice as if it's about he singer's skill level without knowing any of the techniques and just going by their own preferences; maybe that's what we're all doing when we're discussing actors' skill levels? For some reason I've never truly considered that before...

You bring up a very interesting point that is so obvious but I never really thought about before. Actors skills are very subjective. You can see it in comments on these forums alone where some people find a certain actor amazing and some find them sub-par or not even good.

You also bring a good argument about SIG, and don't get me wrong, I find he is an amazing actor, but there was just something about PBG that made me itch for any scene with him. For me he brought a perfect balance between that wounded little brother who just wants to be loved by the older brother he idolized, and the psychopathic serial killer. He would be cute and adorable one moment and send chills down my spine in the next. And an actor needs to be good to make you actually SYMPATHIZE with a serial killer. When I was suggesting the show to my Mom I even commented on his character and how amazed I was with him. She agreed but I think she would ultimately agree with you because her #2 obsession is SIG (Kim Soo-Hyun is her #1).

0

Yeah, the discussions about acting chops are never technical and don't really go anywhere, it seems to always come down to preference. Just like most people on this post commented negatively on Jinyoung's acting, yet I've found him to be at least bearable and with some potential for becoming at least a decent actor.

Completely agree with you about the balance and sympathizing with PBG's character. It kind of creeped me out how likeable he managed to be, it truly was a job well done.
Ha, your mother and I have a lot in common! The two Korean actors that can make me watch anything are SIG and KSH. Well except for sageuks and ghost stories. No one can make me watch those. Even Hong Ki wasn't enough to get me through BotC. And no one, not even Kim Soo Hyun, can pull off Joseon era hats (well, that and I just can't stand all the torture scenes, but of course the visuals matter way more. Obviously. Cuz you know... my eyes could like, get hurt... like from y'know, watching something uncool, y'know?

Okay... seems I'm too tired and should get myself to bed before I get any sillier... *immediately fails to persuade self to move* Mission failed... Ruh-oh...)

0

My mom can watch anything with KSH or SIG. If we watch a show I'll be like 'oh that actor was from this KSH/SIG show' and her comments are always 'there were other actors in those shows?' She is shallow because she wont watch any kdrama without an attractive male lead which makes me laugh. I even got her a KSH pillow and calendar for her birthday.

0

Lol, we all have our shallow moments ;)

I've sometimes stopped watching a drama because of not finding a male lead attractive, although for me it's more about attractiveness = charisma, so really it's more about the actors being bland than anything else. (Or that's just what I tell myself?)

0

Am I the only one who thinks that PBG is also not that good? Honestly, I feel like Baro can act better than him. Maybe that's the reason why they rather choose Jinyoung. If its Baro, he will outshine PBG and steal the show.

Omg what do you talk bogum act stiff. In i remember you he act as psycho so good, his eyes are talking. Even the review from korean netizen also say he was good. In reply 88, he play taek character so good like the real baduk player. In wonderful days as young lee seo jin, he do much better than the adult version, and also in naeil cantabile, even the rating of the drama not good, but his performance was good n said by korean as scene stealer. Please before u judge him see the other project of him. Then u can see how good he is. I dont know if all u cant see his acting is good. But for me as i know various korean drama n watch it for more than 15 years, i can see bogum act is good. He is also very talented n hardworking. For this project he also learn korean traditional accoustic n also learn riding horse n korean history. From that hardworking i'm sure he will be better n mature with the time. So please dont judge him and comparing him with the other actor. Please just enjoy the drama without always comparing with the actor a or b or c. Sorry if i am biased but i cant stand if everyone judging him bad.

I'm not saying he is bad. He's just overrated. And for the record, I've seen Naeil's Cantabile, I Remember You and Reply 1988. But honestly, he didn't left a big impact on me. Go Kyung Pyo is the scene-stealer in Naeil's Cantabile, imo. While in IRY, D.O. is a better psychopath. In R1988, I prefer Ryu Junyeol.

Yes everyone is different. I still thought him is good and not overated. I am still mesmerized with his acting in i remember you also in movie coin locker girl n roaring current. His performance was very good. And for naeil cantabile, for me he is still the scene stealer. As an actor he can talk with his eyes. And taek character, not everyone can do the eye talk like he do. Still the taek character leave big impression especially when he talk with deoksun appa when deoksun appa ask him is he miss his mother? That scene reminds me the most n everytime i watch it, i cry again. Yeah everyone opinion are different. But for me bogum did his best job in portraying all his character. Besides not only good looking, he also has very good personality n heart that attract many person and also cherish all his fans. Thats why i like him as an actor n as a person.

He is decent but not that good. Definitely not lead material in my opinion. He lacks the screen presence and acting chops. I am surprised they chose him for the lead man. Reply series really help boost all the actors' career. But hard to complain when people who are worse them him are already lead actors too. Hyeri who is so bad in entertainer is also the lead female.

Laaawd, this comment section kind of appalls me. I don't understand how anyone can say PBG is not that great of an actor?? He's definitely not in the ranks of SJK or SJS but he's definitely one of the young actors with the most potential.

I guess this really does go down to personal taste because my standard for someone who can act really comes down to how emotive they are (especially through the eyes). I think some ppl who prefers a more dramatic/in your face type of acting can mistaken it for being wooden but I've always thought that actors who could emote feelings WITHOUT having to say or do anything are the best. (Think SJK in a werewolf boy)

Plus, it also helps that PBG has charisma & the likeability factor that can carry him as well. Although not as intense as Woo bin, their acting styles are kinda similar imo. & they both remind me of ji soo as well. All 3 of them ride off intensity & emotion when they act imo (with PBG being the one that's less intense of the 3)

Lastly, I've seen Baro in AM and personally think PBG can act circles around him. Sungjae really is one of the few young idol actors that can hold their own against PBG so it's sad to see him go.

PS. An idol actor I've never really thought was as great as ppl said was si wan-- I just don't get it. I don't think he's that good of an actor tbh. But then again, it's all personal taste.

to me PBG is one of the young actor (early 20s) who can act great without showing much expression . his eyes tell it all his feelings. IRY is one of his amazing work that turned me to feel guilty if i was cheering for murder.

In R88 he was praised by various media & viewers about his acting even his Taek roles are too quiet. Ppl can say he' stiff but if you look through his roles, he didn't talk much but it's all about personal preferences anyway. i can say i support him not only his looks but his acting alone is enough that he got overwhelmed support by public as they called him IT boy or whatever... trendy thingy just come&go XD

what im eager to see if can he act sth crazy/ silly or comedic role cause im get used to his calm characters or little sunshine boy. pity this drama his Crown prince character is till quiet lol but it's ok cuz he's young so he still has very very long way to prove himself in this drama/movie world.

Hi, Javabean: The way you wrote this article seemed to me was quite JINYOUNG BASHING. The words you chose: a little wary.... , I’m ambivalent on Jinyoung’s casting..., I didn’t care for him in the youth music drama....." The most hurtful comment was the one you told KBS "Not all idols are created equal, KBS!" You were comparing Jinyoung B1A4 to
BtoB idol Yook Sung-jae. Indeed, Sung-Jae is young and talented and he has lots of acting experience. However, I do feel that Jinyoung of B1A4 is an under rated and over looked talent. You do need to judge him with an open mind. Jinyoung has composed over 40 songs so far. Songs like: BABY GOOD NIGHT, SOLO DAY, SWEET GIRL are well liked. He has a beautiful voice which brings music to many ears. He does not shout. He sings. I am glad that he performed well in the Moonlight drama

I am shock to read some of these comments were so negative about Jinyoung. OMG, this hurts. I want everyone to know how talented Jinyoung is. What a kind person he is reading how he helped with some children, etc. I am so glad that Jinyoung acted so well in this Moonlight drama. I am so proud of Jinyoung and will be his fan forever.
