Webtoon adaptation Bring It On, Ghost heads to tvN

Oh this sounds fun. There’s a new drama in the works over at tvN called Bring It On, Ghost, and it’s a cohabitation comedy about a ghost and an exorcist. That’s certainly the oddest set of roommates I’ve heard of in a while. The drama is being adapted from the webtoon of the same name by Imins that ran from 2007 to 2010, and it’s about a teenage boy who usually fights ghosts, but then falls in love with a sassy girl ghost who fights back.

The story is about a 17-year-old boy with the ability to see and hear ghosts. What he’s discovered over the years is that he can touch them and fight them off, so when he’s in need of a part-time job and can’t find one that pays well enough, he starts putting ads online as an exorcist for hire. His ad: “Will face off with your ghosts. Chances of winning: virgin ghosts 80%, bachelor ghosts 40%, child ghosts 97%, the rest 50%.”

One night he goes out on the job and faces off with a schoolgirl ghost, and during the fight they accidentally kiss and sparks fly. The webtoon has an irreverent sense of humor and mixes horror, comedy, and romance, though the television adaptation will have to tone down the language and the violence — he fights ghosts physically, so there are knock-down drag-out fights between him and the virgin ghost when he first meets her, which I hope they’ll change in the drama version.

The original is a noona romance — he’s a high school senior and the ghost is four years older — but the adaptation would work any which way, so we’ll have to see how they cast it. The network is touting it as their next Oh My Ghostess, so I’m hoping they figure out a way to make it a saucy rom-com in the same vein (though they’d have to be older for that), with a little less physical fighting and a little more bickering.

Writer Kim Ji-sun (second writer on The Producers and I Live in Cheongdam-dong) is penning the script, and Group 8 is producing. Bring It On, Ghost is scheduled to follow Oh Hae-young Again on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning in July.

Interesting, who will fit this as casts?

my vote goes to Ji Soo, although maybe he's too busy right now...
so perhaps Lee Hyun-woo? or because it's tvN, maybe they could cast someone who's not really popular but can still make it work? like Shin Jae-ha? LOL i don't know any other actors who fits the high school boy image. except if they were going to cast an idol.
i have no idea who fits the female ghost role though. maybe Kim Ji-won? but i doubt she'll take this kind of role.

It would be great if they could pick someone who wasn't super popular yet, and surprise us the way Park Bo-gum, Ji-soo & Co. did last year.

I'd totally watch this, if they would cast Shin Jae-ha. He has left quite an impression on me both in "Pinocchio" and in "Page Turner". And he seems to be pretty versatile.

But am I the only one who thinks Lee Hyun Woo and Park Bo Gum look like they could be brothers?

They definitely look alike. In an interview of IU and Hyunwoo, even IU mentioned how similar he and Bogum looked and teased him about pretending to be Bogum sometimes.

P.S: I don't know if what I've said is confusing but in short, there had been pics of Hyunwoo using subway but when they had a little quiz on naming Seoul subway stations, Hyunwoo lost to IU all the time, even though she wasn't familiar the public transport system. She then teased him that the one in the pics wasn't him but Bogum :)

I'd love it if they could age the protagonist up a little bit...maybe into his early to mid-20s? I'm not a huge fan of high school dramas, though there have definitely been a few that proved me wrong (Shut Up Flower Boy Band and Angry Mom have been my favorite so far).

Kim Yoo Jung should've been casted in this instead of Monlight Drawn by Clouds. Her career choices confuses me because compared to her Kim So Hyun takes up roles that fit her age and showcases her intensity. She should think wisely next time around though

Required fields are marked *

You can say that again. KJY is more popular than KSH when they starred as child version of the leeads in the Moon Embraces The Sun some years ago, but KSH keeps on building her profiles with lots of meaty roles with outstanding acting skills. I love both of them, but I must say that kSH is better than KYJ now.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I wasn't initially a KSH fan because like a lot people I hated her character in Moon/Sun but damn she made me love her along the way so she must be really something

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

But KYJ wouldn't be suitable because the ghost has to be a noona and she definitely doesn't look like one. I actually think she suits the one with PBG because its supposed to be girl in the late teens. I don't think the pairing is weird because the age gap is similar to NJH and KSH.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Actually, I think Moonlight is a smart career move for KYJ (on paper anyway)

1) it's from one of the big 3 networks
2) her male costar is PBG who's basically Korea's rising star/it boy next door
Even if the drama flops ratings wise, I'm sure it'll still appeal to its own niche of viewers and will probs still on a online cult following. Regardless, I just think a PBG x KYJ x Sungjae (maybe) combo is too good to pass up. On paper, that looks great. So I actually think Moonlight was a very intentional move that KYJ made to bridge herself from being child actress to an adult role.

On the other hand, this drama's setup fails in comparison. It's from tvn (so already, there's the ratings issue). I doubt this drama will pull in reply1988 ratings so it's ratings/exposure wouldn't be as wide reaching as a drama from the big three.

Also, male lead hasn't been confirmed. & chances are (due to the age) the available actors that I can think of anyway, don't measure up to PBG in terms of popularity.

Overall, I'm just saying Moonlight was a smart move for KYJ and even if it flops, I can totally see WHY she wouldn't have thought that it would. I personally don't see it flopping just cuz a PBG x KYJ pairing? Come on, that's like a dream come true for knetizens. Do you see the ridiculous amount of support they bestowed on the drama for casting KYJ? Korea was happy af. Although I personally wish the role would've gone to someone older (Kim ji won, hear me roar!) I still think Moonlight was an extremely smart & safe choice for KYJ. For you to say otherwise (or to say she hasnt been making good career choices) is a stretch for me. She takes on layered/dark movie roles and for me that is enough. She hasn't been taking similar roles in kdrama cuz quite frankly, she's still young and I don't think she thinks she has the capacity to do that yet which I fully support.

Although I do agree she has maintain more of a safe/girl next door image in comparison to KSH, I don't think it's right to invalidate her acting career because she is doing great for herself and has shown she has acting chops & range.

Also wait a sec, if she's a schoolgirl ghost, and he's a high school senior, doesn't that make them the same age? (assuming ghosts don't, you know, age)

Unless she died four years earlier and therefore would be a noona to the hero if she was still alive.

Don't they usually graduate HS is Korea around age 20? Maybe she was a senior and he is a freshman. Who knows. Either way I'm a sucker for ghost dramas, so I'll definitely check it out.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

not really, the synopsis says he's the high school senior, not her. And senior year of high school is the last year of secondary school.

Also Korean 20 is the same as our age 18 or 19 - so someone born on, say, 31 December 1997 would be currently 18 by our reckoning, but in Korea, they're 20 since this is the year they turn 19 and Korean age goes +1 on top of that.

Korean students don't actually graduate any older than students in other countries, it's just the age counting system that makes it sound like they do.

I was thinking that he may be 17 Korean age, that is why I thought she could be 20. Either way I'm sure we'll figure out the difference when it airs, if there is any difference at all by the time it gets to the screen.

Unless they change the "noon romance" part, that's not possible. She is and looks younger than him. KJW looked very mature in DotS, but if you change her styling she can look 15. But it's useless to talk about them, I don't think they'll go for something like this, they're both probably being offered something more buzz worthy.

ILICDD is probably way too much of a hassle for most people to watch (lol, what with there only being subs for 40 episodes), but I think this will convince some to get excited. Here's to hoping they'll be able to recreate the magic in their upcoming dramas, respectively.

Viki subbed 38 of the episodes recently (looks like only 19, but there are two 30-minute episodes per "episode"). I keep holding out hope that they'll sub the rest but it doesn't seem likely.

Still, I actually think those episodes are worth it because the charm of the drama is in its world of characters and the heartwarming, funny situations they find themselves in. I feel sad that the story will always seem incomplete to me, but also grateful I got to experience any of it at all.

Okay, I'm SO ready for some new faces to be headlining dramas.

For male lead I vote for:
Kim jae young (search him; he's hot and has this dorkiness to his acting that I think will vibe really well with this drama's setup. Check out beautiology on YouTube if you don't believe me lol)
Lee won gun (he's tied to another drama and idk how that may--or may not--conflict with this but again, I'm ready to see this beautiful man headline something good)

Female lead:
KIM JI WON (seriously, does one need to say more? IT. IS. HER. DAMN. TIME. I think she's proven herself worthy plus her fan base is growing, they need to snatch her up and strike will her popularity is still hot)

Jung so min (again, another great underrated actress for some unknown reason. Like, she should definitely be waaaaay more established than the likes of JSY but no. The power of sponsors I'm telling you. JSY fans, come at me BRUH. Idgaf I speak truth)

Yura (I think she has such potential and actually acts well. Considering how her band members are getting headlining roles, why can't she as well? Someone, throw her a bone. She just needs the opportunity, she'll deliver the rest!)

Again, these are my potential dream cast. It seems a bit unlikely but one CAN dream right? Lol. Also, considering the age range, there isn't much actors/actresses I can think of at the top of my head that is available for this drama atm so maybe this WILL open up an opportunity for new faces to be cast. I would love that. Seeing as this will come from tvn this is even more of a possibility. I'm really looking forward to it!
