Name That Drama: Birthday candles of death and epic historical battles

As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. That’s practically one hundred percent

I can’t remember this drama for the life of me, and I’m seventy-five percent sure it’s a Korean drama… But there’s a chance it could also be from Japan.

I can only remember a small scene from the end of it, and I think it’s about a fake(?) marriage/relationship. They sleep in separate rooms, and the man only has a single bed. When they confirm their feelings, they still sleep in different beds and it upsets the girl, because she wants to sleep in the same bed as him. He’s a workaholic, but eventually, he asks her to go furniture shopping with him to buy a bigger bed. Thanks for the help!

  2. Sour fruit, sour faces

Hello! I am looking for a drama I watched a few years ago. The only thing I remember is the girl peeling a citrus fruit (the kind that’s really sour). I think she got it from a grandmother or something.

The guy wanted one, even though she warned him that it was extremely sour (he acted all macho, saying he could handle it), and when he ate one, his entire face scrunched up for a second and the girl laughed. Thank you!

  3. Name That Movie: The “This Goes South Quickly” Edition

Hey! I’ve been trying to figure out the name of this movie I saw. It basically revolved around this convenience store, and the little stories that took place in it.

For example, one of the first scenes had the cute part-timer confess his love to the other part-timer (they were both guys), and they kissed over the counter. There was also a scene where a guy put his drink in their fridge.

At the end, it shows the store’s security cameras playing a video of the store getting robbed. The last scene was of the manager committing suicide because he didn’t have enough money to keep the store running.

Sorry for the horrible explanation, but I’ve been trying to find this movie for ages!

  4. Name That Drama or Movie, Part One

There was a drama or movie I saw in the early 2000s that I can’t seem to find anywhere. I’ve searched high and low to no avail. I only saw the beginning, and would like to watch it.

I only remember the part in the beginning where there’s a guy on a boat, and I think he’s some kind of movie producer. And then there’s a huge storm that comes in, and he falls into the water. After that, the girl sees him from a far, and jumps in to save him.

That’s all I remember. Sorry it’s not much, but if you guys can help me, that would be great!

  5. Name That Drama or Movie, Part Two

Hi! So there’s this drama/movie I’m trying to remember from somewhere between 2000-2006. Ish. I can’t remember anything specific like the actors or plot, but I do remember the male lead had a heart condition, and there was a scene at a hospital where he said his heart was feeling… better? And another one where he was picking up spilled beans off the floor and looked up to see the female lead.

There was also a boy I assume was related to the female lead, and I think he also had a heart condition, but I might be mixing up dramas. Do any of you know what drama/movie this is? I’m sure it’s Korean, since they were speaking it in the drama/movie.

  6. Sweet beginnings mean angst later

I’ve only seen one scene of this drama, and it might have been the first drama I laid eyes on, so it’s pretty much been bugging me forever. The scene is this: two kids are playing in a field, one boy and one girl. The boy picks a clover blossom, ties it into a ring, and puts it on the girl’s finger.

It feels like a very early 2000s romance, but I could be wrong. Any ideas?

  7. A very kdrama way to go

My sister-in-law was watching Big. I asked how the mother dies, because it’s been a long time since I saw it. She told me how, and I said, “It isn’t when he made his mom go get birthday candles?” And now that we know it wasn’t that scene, now we’re trying to find out which drama it came from.

In the scene, the boy (a teenager I believe) was upset on his birthday, and said he didn’t have any candles on his cake. The mom ran to go get them for him, but never made it back home because she got attacked.

I was hoping you guys might know the answer. I asked every other kdrama fan I knew, but none has helped so far, lol.

  8. Cars, the leading cause of death among drama characters

There’s this scene that comes to my mind, and I can’t figure out anything about it. It’s torture. There’s an OTP of the drama. They’re like, running away from something. They’re wearing dark clothes.

Suddenly, a car comes toward them. The male lead shoves the female lead aside, and she ends up falling on him. He had a fight with those baddies int he car though. I remember that I also watched the behind-the-scenes of this scene too. The drama wasn’t a romcom in tone.

If someone can help me, it would be a real miracle. Thanks a lot!

  9. This actually sounds pretty cool

So, I have this drama that I’ve been thinking about for quite a while now. I was on a trip alone, and it was my last night there. That night, there was only me, the hostel owner and a group of Korean girls. I had nothing else to do, so they invited me into the common area to join them for the drama they were watching.

I think it was set in ancient times? Most of the characters had their hair in topknots, like the period kdramas. It was a war scene, I think, and there was this huge stone wall and a gate, like the kind you see in ancient palaces. There were soldiers using a huge tree trunk(?) to try to break open the gigantic wooden gate, and on the other side the soldiers protecting it were shooting arrows down, before this one guy went up to throw down vats of oil(?), and also a fire stick to burn the battering ram. But in the end, they managed to break down the gate, and the soldiers surged through. I don’t remember many details after that, but it was an epic fight scene, and it was cool that the king/emperor inside the palace also drew his sword to prepare to fight. Oh yeah, and after that there was a brown hairy beast of some sort inside a cage, but the main character seemed to recognize him somehow and took him out of the cage. He gave him a bath and his fur was white? Haha.

THAT’S ALL I REMEMBER about this drama, but I really want to watch the rest of it so badly, and also the beginning too. I never got the contacts of those Korean girls before I left, and they told me the name of the show, but in Korean or something, and I forgot. Please help!

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

Yeah, but they did go shopping for a new bed/furniture. It could be a lot of dramas to be honest. In Sweet 18 they were living in the same house but in different rooms, not sure about the size of bed though...

Definitely Bride of the Century! I love that drama. Girlfriday and JavaBeans NEED to see this drama. They would love the ghost if nothing else, but it's a seriously well-crafted drama.

the scene where he is driving her back after she went and visited the head nun and had the fake date with the 2nd lead, he asks her to feed him one because he is driving and she warns him it is sour and he still demands it. -this was in you're beautiful, he also makes the sour face because of limes. But this mandarin while driving thing has happened in other dramas too i think

There are definitely no sour fruits given by relatives in either of these dramas. In YB, there are lemons as part of a photo shoot....

there was a lot of fruit in Youre beautiful, and symbolic tea and water, and juice. And It was limes, not lemons he took home, he took them home to make her something to help her fill better. I remember watching reading the recaps on her because its the only recap that has a gif (he opens the fridge and picks up a lime and sticks out his tongue) in it.
It was one of my first dramas, and its become one of my "comfort dramas" when I am feeling blue.

Nr. 3 "Futureless Things" (2014) ? - I haven't seen the movie myself but it evolves around different people in a convenience store and as far as I know there is a male male love story between Shin Jae-has character and another actor, whom I don't know.

I haven't seen that one either (only several others from the same director) but it definitely sounds like his style. Plus, if you've have guy-guy that's a good place to start.

"Oh yeah, and after that there was a brown hairy beast of some sort inside a cage . . . He gave him a bath and his fur was white?"

I am visualizing Charlton Heston in this one: "Get into that bathtub, you damn dirty ape!"

Anyhow, what was the hairy beast?

I watched Nirvana on fire - the drama with the beast,
but honestly even the beast himself is a big spoiler, so I am so sorry, I don't think I can write about it,
it kinda like a giveaway and by the time you saw the beast, it's on 3rd half of story, you pretty much can guess 85% right on his identity,
plus there's no spoiler button here.

but the sequence is not like charlton heston but more like,
the male lead recognized him and lead him to go outside , he symptahize with him, asked people to prepare him a bath and clothes, there's no bath scene, he just get a proper dress,
and it's a touching scene

Lol. I guess K-drama moms really do have drastic ways of going. I initially wanted to say that #7 could also be Secret Love Affair... The male lead's mom goes out for something, then gets hit by a car. Very randomly dramatic way to kill the protagonist's mother. But then I remember now that it wasn't for birthday candles, but for something like hand-warmers (the kind you use in the winter time)?

#1 - could be Chinese drama "Silent Separation" a.k.a. "My Sunshine", starring Tiffany Tang and Wallace Chung; the drama also had a film adaptation made starring Yang Mi and Huang Xiao Ming

#8 - sounds like a pretty generic scene, but it could be from the Korean "Cruel City" a.k.a. "Heartless City", starring Jung Kyung Ho and Nam Gyu Ri
