Meet the beautiful knights of Hwarang: The Beginning

You know what, I was wrong. Really wrong — to believe that Park Seo-joon (She Was Pretty) was good-looking in only a quirky, unconventional way, and not at all the pretty-boy way.

Because looking at these freshly released promo images for KBS’s upcoming drama Hwarang: The Beginning, I found him fitting right in to the role of a Silla-era “beautiful knight” (a literal translation of Hwarang), albeit nearly unrecognizable in the sageuk getup. (I kept looking for him, wondering which one he was!)

But I present to you Exhibit A:

Hwarang: The Beginning features a central cast of six Hwarang warriors — Silla military bands that were comprised of young men known for, among other things, being beautiful — led by Park Seo-joon playing a character named Moo-myung. (That seems to be a popular naming choice in sageuks, in that it means Nameless and gets to sound cool.) He approaches life with a “you only live once” mentality that gives him the relentlessness of a dog and the free spirit of a bird.

He’ll fall into a loveline with our heroine Go Ara (You’re All Surrounded, who’ll play a woman named Aro (that’ll be easy to remember) whose parentage is half-lowly and half-royal, with a frank, straightforward personality. He starts out wanting to protect her, which turns to love.

Park Hyung-shik (High Society) forms a love triangle with Park Seo-joon and Go Ara, playing a man who “takes off the fate of a faceless king.” His King Jinheung character ruled Silla from 540 to 576 A.D., and takes on a secret identity to keep himself safe from the threats on his life. He’s a lonely soul, not trusting others easily and keeping his true self concealed, making him a sensitive and prickly addition to the Hwarang gang, although he will gradually transform into a strong man and leader.

Min-ho (Because It’s the First Time) plays an aristocrat born with a silver spoon in his mouth (well, the metaphor is golden spoon in Korean), and is described as hot-blooded and chivalrous. He’s called a playboy by everyone, but is actually a pure-hearted young man who’s devoted in love to one woman.

Do Ji-han (Basketball), meanwhile, is the cold-blooded one of the group, having been taught politics from an early age with an emphasis on seeking power. Though he’s intellectual and competitive, in the face of a fateful love, he can abandon that coldness. (So are all the men going to be leveled by romantic love in this drama?)

Jo Yoon-woo (I Order You) is the one with a beautiful exterior and mysterious aura — and an unexpectedly sharp tongue — meant to incite our curiosity. And rounding out the group is V of idol group Bangtan Boys (BTS), the maknae of the group who’s described as “fresh and clear like a ray of sunlight.” Resident puppy, check.

Looks like a pretty diverse mix of personalities — it’s almost like a sageuk boy band, brought together to cover as many fan tastes as possible. Hey, not that I’m complaining about lots of pretty boys. They’re pretty for historical accuracy! It’s not at all about me being shallow at all, nope.

Hwarang: The Beginning will be entirely pre-produced and will air on KBS later this year, though a timeslot has yet to be assigned.

It's like I'm staring at the Korean version of Tolkien's Pretty, Pretty but Deadly Elves.

Just look at those long flow locks. They looked like Legolas and his elf buddies had their wigs been dyed all black.

Whaa..hahahaaa! They do look pretty funny, except for Park Seo-joon. I actually like this Legolas makeover on him and now I'm ready and set to like him in Hwarang as much as I loathed his character in She Was Pretty. Yey for fresh starts!

Poor V. First thing that came to my mind was Virgin Mary (no offence to anyone).

I'm so excited for this mainly because it's once again a sageuk that most likely will blend in fact with fiction. These really are the original flower boys. Yay for history! Yay for me wanting to scream at my laptop every episode over romance! I really hope it airs when I'm living in South Korea later this year.

Ever since Queen Seondeok I've been wanting more dramas about the Hwarang warriors!

The pictures of the warrior band look like the same style of QSD and other early period saguek dramas, so I'm definitely looking forward to when this drama comes out! :D

Kim Young-Hyun's "Seo Dong Yo" and "QSD" both featured the Hwarangs. Since they existed in ancient history, no one knows what they look/wear/ or how their makeup was done if they really wore any etc. What they wore in the drama was the writer's imagination based on the description in some historical records.

Ok, though I respect everyone's opinions, I thought I'd give my two cents.

First of all, if you've seen any of the other Flower Boy dramas from this team, you know they're all quirky, funny with a side of drama. They don't take themselves very seriously.

Also, this is not Joseon or even Goryeo. We are too used to those styles methinks and that's why this may seem a bit odd to us. But even those styles (Joseon and Goryeo) are a bit girly when they want too. Have you seen Six Flying Dragons? Eyeliner and eyeshadow was not out of the questions in early Joseon if we take that as an example.

And finally, the whole concept of this sounds like a Manhwa (pretty boys fighting for honor and beauty?) So I think the directors were going for the manhwa look, which they achieved.

I am going into this with an open mind, and will decide if this is ridiculous or not after watching. I mean if you only see Sailor Moon's posters for instance you'd think is the silliest thing ever, but the show was awesome and was my favorite as a kid...

So I'll wait and see...

Im watching queen seon duk right now so im not really weirded out by the costumes but rather im curious with regards to the story...

Cause if this will be a love story between king jinheung, aro, and the nameless dude...

Then is aro = mishil
Nameless dude = seolwon rang?

But i thought mishil wasnt of royal blood? So aro isnt mishil? Then a royal consort/queen was someone mishil knew...
Mind fuck

Required fields are marked *

Mishil's character probably won't appear in this drama. Mishil was twenty years younger than King Jinheung (played by Park Hyung Sik in this drama)... she wasn't even born when he was enthroned. This drama is about the young Sam Maek Jong, later known as King Jinheung of Silla.
Mishil was King Jinheung's mistress in the later years of his reign if I'm not mistaken.

King Jinheung was in his 40s when he established the Hwarang if I remember correctly.

I'm pretty sure they are not following history here. QSD was a fusion sageuk and the authenticity of the historical records that mentioned Mishil has not been proven. Her character was based more on the novel "Mishil".

It took me a sec to locate Park Seo-joon in the group poster. Man, he looks so different! But as a hardcore BTS fan, I easily found V, and it's definitely fitting to have him play the maknae, aka "resident puppy" (that made me laugh!). In terms of the actual drama, I agree with most people here that it will be either be awesome or a train wreck. Obviously, I hope it's the former. And does anyone know how many episodes this will be?

Song Joong Ki wasn't born with Joseon's garbs either...he had to prove himself first in this genre too (like any other actor) and he sure passed the 'test" with flying colors. As for those guys, it's their first attempt at sageuk, ok They have to prove themselves, ok but I wouldn't write them off before seeing them in action (that would be very petty imo). They may surprised us for all we know. Not a fan of Shinee Minho's acting for example but I'm ready to give him another chance (last chance).....

He wasn't born with Joseon carbs but he was born with talents that helps him adapt naturally. You can tell by his very first sageuk that he's more than just a pretty face.

I've cringed through some of these guys' earlier dramas and I don't have positive things to say about their acting.

Hopefully they'll cast some sageuk veterans so it'll at least feel a little bit like a sageuk.
These writers are going fantasy fusion so it's safe to say that it shouldn't be judge as a traditional sageuk.

Let's agree to disagree then...Park Hyung Sik has a lot of potential imo, I was really impressed by his performance in 'Sirius' for example (playing the younger version of the main character) Koreans themselves acknowledged his talent (often in their top 5 when it comes to idols turned actors)

Park Seo Joon is also very talented...love him in Witch's Romance and Kill me Heal me.

I have no words for Shinee Minho's acting, the first drama I watched of him was "To The Beautiful You' and he was beyond terrible in it. Like I stated earlier, I'm ready to eat my words if he rocks this role.

Not all veterans are good...Song Seung-heon and Oh Ji Ho can be considered as veterans in the industry and their acting is cringe worthy imo...(I'm not talking about sageuk veterans here, though some aren't that good either)

Lastly, like you rightly stated, writers are going for fantasy fusion drama...I'm expecting something lighthearted^^

0

This post is meant for anyone...not only you :)

Regarding Park Hyung Sik, I also want to add that : I wish for him to tackle more serious roles in the future (challenging if you prefer), this way he might be taken more seriously as an actor (like his band mate Im Siwan) Because if given the opportunity, I'm sure he can pull off a lot of roles. The guy can act. His only fault is to be kind of typecast as chaebols in mainstream dramas (not that it's bad but still...) Those kind of roles are keeping him from showing is full range imo...that's a pity.

He was good in weekend drama 'WHTMF', he saved 'High Society', excellent in Nine as well...forget 'The Heirs', he was wasted in this drama :/ That's all.

0

Yes sageuk veterans and Song Seung-heon and Oh Ji Ho are not in that category.

I'm referring to the older generations of supporting actors like Kim Gap Soo, Jung Jin-Young, Jeong Seong-Mo etc who would make difference here.

0

Let me add some favorites of mine as well : Ahn Nae Sang, Lee Sung-Jae, Eom Hyo-Seop and Choi Min Soo (busy with Jackpot and he would probably turn it down since I read somewhere he dislikes idols turned actors)

Rest of the cast for Hwarang :

Kim Ji-Su - Queen Jiso
Choi Won-Young - An Ji-Gong
Yoo Jae-Myung - Pa-O
Kim Chang-Wan
Kim Kwang-Kyu

0

Yes yes yes Choi Min Soo , Ahn Nae Sang etc (your whole list) are my top favorites. I didn't add them because they were mostly lead actor material back in the days like Yoo Dong Geun, Choi Myung Gil ,Kim Young-Chul etc.

Sometimes I get stuck in that era of sageuk actors that I hardly give credits to the younger generations of growing actors.
I think I was born in the wrong era lol.

0

Kim Taehyung looks so adorable omg. But why is his makeup so...dirty? Lol I still love him though. Am I the only one who thinks Minho always gets stuck with the worst hair? Yo PSJ now he literally rocks it the best out of all of them.

Don't know why everyone is so negative over hair/make-up/costumes. The writing is what will make or break. Since it's from the Flower Boy franchise, I thought it would be more lighthearted than other fusion/sajuek type shows and not take itself too serious.

That's a picture from the 7th century of an actual Silla ambassador. He's not a hwarang, yet he has long hair and makeup on (which would imply that that was the fashion among Silla men), so just imagine how much more flashy an actual hwarang would be in comparison.

That website is heavily biased against Koreans. It's obvious that an anti-Korean person with a Japanese right-wing agenda made it based on all of the other articles there. Why would you even link to that website when it's clearly not neutral and is so heavily agenda-driven?.. Furthermore, the last time it was updated was in 2003, and it doesn't cite any sources. It kinda makes me worried that people are visiting anti-Korean websites like that and being influenced so easily.

Keep in mind that Silla had a history of about 1000 years. Hwarang probably went through many phases. They were warriors at times, and were especially famous during the Battle of Hwangsanbeol which was the battle where Silla conquered Baekje.

The title of the articles that Marina posted says "The Myth of Hwarang". THAT is what I was commenting about.

0

"It says clearly that it’s a MYTH…."

I don't get what your point is. How is the title of that website relevant to my statement that Hwarang probably went probably through many phases and at times were warriors? I never claimed that they were a warrior class. Furthermore, that site is most likely one of those typical anti-Korean made by Japanese right wingers. Hardly a reliable source.

The site that Marina linked to never even mentioned the section from the Samguk Sagi (written by Kim Busik) on the most famous hwarang of all, who is famous for participating in the Battle of Hwangsanbeol.

http://mamstar.com.ne.kr/samgugsagi/dl/163.htm

I hope you're not agreeing with Marina's generalizing statement that they were "pretty boys lovers for kings. It’s historically correct."

0

I was agreeing with you and that's why I mentioned Kim Busik. Hwarang being a myth is her own interpretation.
(My fault for being confusing. Eng is my 3rd language).

I may not agree with her but history is meant to be questioned and reevaluate etc. We should look at who wrote it, when etc.

If I remember correctly Kim Busik was a Confucian scholar and his ancestors were from Shilla. He was born in Goryeo around 5 centuries or so later and he was not an eyewitness to these events. I wouldn't say it was 100% accurate.

0

I hope you’re not agreeing with Marina’s generalizing statement that they were “pretty boys lovers for kings. It’s historically correct.”

No I don't agree with that.

I was curious so I went to see if I could find a real image of one. I did. Their hair really was super long.

I think non-Korean Beanies here are too much affected by their images of present day "flower boys," pretty K-pop boys often wearing makeup and costumes even more flashy than women's.

However, flower knights as in "hwarang" had more to do with the fact that they were all youths, not middle-aged or old men. Because youth itself is beautiful, and it is the "flowery" stage of one's life, youth is often likened to flower in Korean language. People would say things like "I wasted my flower-like youth."

Looking like a girl isn't bad, because girls aren't bad and anybody that uses that particular statement as an insult obviously had parents who didn't obey the no incest rule. Less inbreeding, more critical thinking chickens. I'm going to bookmark this one, looks interesting.
