Happy Friday!
Excited for new batch of dramas - Daebak, Monster, Lawyer Jo Dal-ho. I thought my life is already busy enough with all W-R dramas (and memory, Ms.temper, Marriage contract, Mrs.cops, list goes on- actually happy as drama fan).
I was so impressed with Oh Yeon-seo in "Come Back, Ajussi", but couldn't find her interview besides the one in youtube when they had the production press conference. What I found is the one done last year after she finished "Shine or Go crazy" with Jang Hyuk and Lee Ha-nui (Her love?partner? in CBA currently).

She debuted in high school(growth) drama Banolrim in 2003, and has played side characters in various dramas including King Sejong the great. She became known after she played Jang Bo-ri in popular weekend drama Jang Bo-ri (2014) and received the best female acting award for the show. After finishing the show, she wanted to take a rest but she couldn't pass
up the opportunity playing female lead in "Shine or go crazy". She liked SinYeol character who was aggressive and didn't depend on a man. She played two roles- Vice head merchant lady SinYeol and (man) girl in disguise GaeBong in the show."Personally I like assertive/ confident female character. People might think I keep doing the same role, but I think I can
take evil, cold roles in the future, so I am not worried about not playing different types of characters. I'd like to have slow progress and show what I can do better more for now. I hope people think of aggressive, confident and positive image when they hear my name."

About finishing SOGC, she says "I had doubts if I could do it after just finishing a show. I was scared and people around me worried about me. but I really wanted to play that kind of character, so I ended up doing it. Now that it ended, I feel sad. I ended up crying in the drama end party, feeling so sad."

About playing two characters: "It was good experience. GaBong and SinYeol had different personality and their outfits were different too. I felt like playing two different characters. But I felt more comfortable and at ease when I played GaBong.Wearing man's clothes was so comfortable(laugh). Jang Hyuk sunbae-nim joked that it was prettier when GaeBong did the makeup
and she should've pretended being a man to the end...It was first time I did melo. I had good response and fun. I thought "well do I have this side too!" Thesedays people fall in love too easily and get over it too easily. I think melo line loving someone persistently portrayed in Sageuk is more beautiful than the one portrayed in modern dramas."

About criticism her acting was similar to Jang Bo-ri character in the beginning: "I thought it was given me getting that kind of response since I started this new show almost right after finishing JBR. Still I was hurt a little. Even though I got picked on it, I didn't change because SOGC was 24 episode show and I believed I could show more mature and deeper acting when I became older than 20 years old in the show."

About hearing she is pretty (complements on looks): "PD-nim paid so much attention that I sometimes marveled at myself "Wow I look so bright and clean" watching the screen. PD-nim joked he'd make me the brightest and prettiest in Oh Yeon-seo's life and I think he kept his promise. I looked too pretty in the show so I am worried what if I don't look pretty in the next show (laugh). Many people showed responses like "Was she that pretty?" watching SinYeol. I liked it but I also thought "What? was I that so-so before?"

About acting with Jang Hyuk: "He never used Banmal(impolite speech) and was very considerate. He had busier shooting schedule than me, but always talked to me warmly "Have you eaten?" "Were you able to sleep a bit?" During the shooting he checked with me for an opinion and gave me lots of good suggestions. I think many nice and funny scenes came out thanks to sunbae-nim. What is amazing with sunbae-nim is that he does ad-lib only in the scenes his partner does not have to modify his/her lines. His experiences really shows."

About working with Lee Ha-nui: "I loved it. She is unbelievably not finicky. She felt arrogant in my first impression because she was ex- Ms.Korea and graduated from Seoul University (Lee has B.S. and M.S. from SNU majoring in Korean traditional music. My fave is Lee in Modern Farmer). I thought I might have hard time to get close to her, but she talked to me first. She is a really cute person."

In the beginning, she was famous as Kim Hee-sun look-alike. "I still feel burdened hearing I look like Kim Hee-sun sunbae-nim. I am the generation growing up watching Kim's "Tomato" and "Mr.Q", so I worship her. It is my honor but these kind of article will bring in tons of hateful comments. Honestly I don't know if I look like her. Her looks is something legendary you see."

About genre or characters she wants to do next: "I would like to do a romcom. I want to do a show about real romance in their 20-30's. I want a show which is cheesy but heartbreaking. Personally I enjoyed "I need a romance" and "Discovery of Love". After I did MalSook character in "Unexpected you", that character image made big impact- being immature, loving clothes, having no manners and outright arrogant. Most of synopsis and characters that I got offer to play were similar to that character. So I want to try the opposite of that character and picked "Medical Top Team" and "Jang Bo-ri" - boyish or unpolished role. But nowadays I'd like to do a trendy role again."

"I don't care if my looks get messed up as long as the role makes sense. Hateful comments about my looks don't bother me, but I feel hurt when I see negative comments about my acting. But then again they say hateful comments are better than no comments because that means people still show interests. The most impressive one among recent comments I read was "It feels like Oh Yeon-seo ssi has lived as Sin Yeol, and Sin Yeol felt like she'd lived just like OYS ssi acted." I felt my hard-working acting was paid off/worthwhile."

"Actually my personality was not cheerful. Because of my gloomy, quiet and shy personality, I failed auditions many times. But once I started to play cheerful and positive roles, my real personally started to change. Sometimes when I meet people I knew long ago, they surprise and wonder if I am the same person. That made me think I don't need to show various
personalities in the show forcefully until I get more acting experiences. Since I plan to continue acting, I think I have sufficient time to play different characters. I hear people saying I will do evil character good, so I don't want to take evil character role even more. If a person who gives out strong image like me does an evil character, it will be boring I think."

oh no I didn't want to be the first commenter.

@fan
Thank you, thank you so much for your effort translating her interviews.
I become Oh Yeon Seo's new fan thanks to Come Back Ahjussi.
I've watched her in Medical Top Team but can't even recall her character there. LOL.
She's still in her 30, same age as Moon Geun Young and Shin Se Kyung so I expect her to take more variety of roles and more genres. Her acting is great and she has good looks too, I hope she continue land amazing lead roles in the future!

oh well since I am here already..
Awesome Six Flying Dragons ended. They say the reason the ratings didn't go over 20% was that it had too many(6) leads, and by trying to portray common people and mixing martial arts heroes into political intrigue made the plot unfocused and slow. Also they said it was disappointing that Jung Do-jeon who was charismatic, was in the center of the show in early episodes and Boon-yi who represented common people lost their energy in the later episodes.

Some from Interview with Sin Kyung-soo PD:
Q: How were the actor/actresses?
A: "They all had their own strong characteristics. I feel casting was done perfectly. Kim Myung-min led the show's structure as a whole, Yoo Ah-in showed the depth and various acting skills, which was extra-ordinary for his age. If mistakenly portrayed, it could be shown as 'beautify' or 'too young' but he made convincing LBW. Si-kyung worked with me for the third time and she showed depth and elegant, and precise acting as expected. Byun Yo-han worked first time with me, and he was excellent in interpertating the script and bring out his own, and passion acting without caring about own safety. Yoon kyun-sang has optimistic personality matching his MH character. He became the dragon in ep 49, but he never looked bothered and gave staff positive energy during that long enduring period. So I am thankful. Chon Ho-jin portrayed solemn LSG with Charisma. There was energy I have not seen before."

Q: Have you talked with Yoo Ah-in about other works and how Lee Bang-won was portrayed before?
A: I haven't talked with Yoo Ah-in much. In the beginning I talked about important scenes to him once. In my view, Yoo Ah-in was LBW, because he interpreted the character brilliantly. He was almost 100% matched with LBW I imagined.

Q: Because LBW was convincing and approved by viewers, Jung Do-jeon and Jung Mong-joo felt like evil being on opposite side.
A: History has passed with having LBW centered and drama also portrayed that way. There have been a few dramas about LBW and they were all popular portraying LBW fitting that (airing) time period. LBW was either hero or villain before. So I suggested writers to avoid these two point of views. I think it is such fortunate that Yoo Ah-in acted believably so well. But then again I was worried about JDJ and JMJ characters who were opposite side of the fence.

Q: What was the most memorable scene for you?
A: Jo Young-gyu's death scene. We were shooting in the warehouse we built in the set, and I asked the actor (Min Sung-wook) to crawl bleeding terribly. That time I noticed the door was open, so I thought about a scene to go crawling and close the door. I talked to Min about it and he took it well.

Q: You have good reputation that you take actors' opinions into shooting.
A: "It was possible because writers had open-minded. Writers said they will give directors some rights- allow making some changes, and just remember to make a good show. So I did lots of shooting preparations, but actors also came really well prepared. I think one method of good directing is to help actors to play comfortably. So I tend to listen to their opinions."

Q: In the beginning, Gil Tae-mi made big news. Did you expect that?
A: "Writer-nim predicted. They said at casting time that if Gil Tae-mi doesn't become famous, drama will fail, so I was really stressed out about it. I have known Park Hyuk-gwon (who played GTM) because we did many works together. We know about each other too well so burden was 100 times more because we had to show the new, fun and creative character. I didn't have doubt he would do well, but still after we did the first shooting, we sighed. However it settled in one week. Actor also said he had hard time in the beginning. There was time they did re-shoot in the site, and Cho Jong-won (Lee In-gym character) gave a lot of help. Makeup team gave a hand too."

Q: Mu-hyul (played by Yoon Kyun-sang)'s ending in episode 49 was amazing.
A: "Credit has to be given to martial arts director. Shooting that scene was the last shooting for the day, but editing that day was not finished so I had to come back to Seoul around 2 PM. I told directors and Kyun-sang ssi do it themselves."

Q: One particular thing in SFD was that there were lots of stage actors.
A: "Acting in SaGeuk is not easy so I wanted to cast people with proven acting talents. Also I think casting should be always fresh and new. I wanted to cast new people rather than people you watch on TV all the time. Besides 6 dragons who are well known, the people who supported them were the people with experience in doing theatre plays. I tend to watch lots of plays to cure the wound I get doing dramas. I go to watch actors, but I get good ideas too."

Q: If there is any actor you particularly appreciate personally?
A: "There were 330 people in the show, and I casted about 200 personally. So it is hard to pick just one. Since even the person who shows only in one scene has to act well, casting was very difficult. I even dug out the plays that I watched when I was in college and had headache doing it. So after middle point, I asked help from close actors and get their recommendations and call them myself. I asked them politely if they can do it when they had only one episode to play, and most of time they easily agreed without hesitation. It bothers me that many times casting director decides actors and meet them in shooting site for the first time. So I tell staffs "They have to do well. Show them where the makeup room is." When I do that, staffs' attitude meeting actors when they arrive changes. Actors also feel "Oh this show staffs show concerns for me" and can do acting...

and can do acting feeling comfortable."
Q: In the beginning of the show, Jung Seong-gil who was faking a Japanese pirate received high praise for his good acting.
A: After that episode, writer-nim trusted me 100% on my casting. I have buy a meal in DaeHakRo (where most of small playhouses are) when the show completes.

Q: One of the best things in SFD was action (Martial arts) scene. What was the secret?
A: "I think first one is trust. Gang Hyung-mook action director is in action school and I only met him when we did 'Three days'. In the beginning we had many meetings and preparations, but after the first shooting I thought I could trust him. Second one is the fact that action director and shooting director worked well together and did their best within given time. Third one is actors- Byon Yo-han, Yoon Gyun-sang, and Han Ye-ri did preparation at their hardest and acted without care for what happens to them. The quality of their action got better and at the end they had body movements and speed just like professional action actors."

Q: Acting was great, product was great, but ratings didn't follow that- are you disappointed?
A: "Of course I am disappointed. I think this was new type of drama. Following 6 leads was not easy. Writer-nim, actors and even viewers could feel conflicted as to which character they have to follow. I think SFD is 2 track drama. There is a character's transformation as time passes(how history shaped) in Sageuk, and there is time imaginary figures had to move forward. Writer-nim combined these figures very exquisitely, but viewers who were used to watch typical Sageuk might have felt uncomfortable about these imaginary people's stories. At the same time the people who are used to fantasy Sageuk might've thought why we were doing the show about a figure we all know too well."
"Since it is a long drama there was time I felt bothered and dispirited, but as PD I had to keep leading the team not showing personal feelings. It was hard. The biggest disappointment was when we didn't get ratings we expected. But writer-nim kept going and crews and actors followed them, so we could complete 50 episodes."

Q: DoWhaJun fight is the one I remember the most. I heard it was long shooting and weather was really cold.
A: We filmed for about 3.5 days. Byon Yoo-han, Yoon Kyun-sang and Min Sung-wook/Young-gyu had muscle aches because of their many actions. Also Yeon-hee(Jung Yoo-mi) and Bang-ji (BYH) had important episodes settling their younger days of earlier episodes so it was not easy shooting emotionally."

Q: Which scene you felt the most proud of?
A: "When we did the ending of episode 2 (Jung do-jeon at the gate). Ever since I received the 4 books of scripts, I wanted to shoot the JangPyungMoon(gate) scene well. I wondered if I could ever shoot that kind of scene again so I did to my heart's content. That scene had the largest scale in this drama."

Q:How about BW and Boon-yi's romance? The scene they had snowball fight was memorable.
A: "There was no snow in weather forecast for a week. So we had to go to a ski resort. Still only MooJoo in JunBook province had snow and like miracle snow accumulated. So we went to MooJoo and filmed, and felt like it was magic and we received some present. Everybody had fun shooting. Ah-in and Se-kyung ssi were also happy like a child."

Q:If there is any message to relay to the viewers?
A:"Very thankful. I am thankful that there are many people loved the show. Six dragons parted ways after they fought each other, but they met with dreams and ideas to make a brand new world in the beginning. I hope people remember that mind. That way maybe we can view this world we live in more optimistically and healthily I think. "

Wow last remark reminds me of Heads' ending recap comments "the dream Dragons dreamed for us won’t soon be forgotten."

Thank you for the interview translation!!! In extension, thank you all the staff and PDs for SFD, I'm sad also that you guys didn't achieve the rating that you guys hope for, but what a great ride you had given us!

Thank you for translating and also filling the gap in my heart that is SFD! I was always lagging behind by ~4-6 episodes and rushed them all to watch the final eps live.

Thank you thank you for posting this!!!
I feel sorry that even the PD felt discouraged because of the rating. But i hope the fact that it touched people and encouraged us the viewers to think and contemplate many things is enough reward for the production team.

Team Dragons!!!

The scene at the gate in Ep. 2 certainly seemed the high point to me. I left SFD after 9 episodes. I think "diffuse" is the word.

0

Lovely! Thank you again. :)

0

The complexity and interwoven stories of SFD was precisely what I found so compelling about it. It would have been easier to simply follow a single "hero", especially if the goal was to get the audience behind a particular political vision, but the introduction of multiple perspectives allowed for a much more nuanced look at the benefits and costs of the choices every character made. It may have hurt the ratings, but I personally felt it lead to a much stronger show.

Absolutely!

0

@Gelai - yes One Flying Dragon would have been much less fun.

0

I agree 100%! I'm glad that they had the courage to do something different from other dramas but I'm also sad that they didn't get high ratings.

0

I wonder if they were a bit too over confident with the timing. Jeong Do Jeon just finished airing only the year before . That was still fresh in viewers mind especially when it was based more on what's written on the history books.

I did complain about Kim Myung Min being wasted here but I thought the ending of his character was fine. "I'm tired Bang-won-ah" ...that I will remember.

YAY for stage actors!!!!!! I'm a fan of the theatre (musical etc).

Thank you so much fan! I love stage actors and I'm so glad that they casted a lot in this show. My fav was Park Hae-Soo who played Lee Ji-ran.

I hope to see him in more sageuks and a regular on tv.

Another one of those times when I wonder about Korean audience tastes versus my American tastes. I loved the different perspectives and I thought it wasn't very focused. Not on the characters, but on the plot and the plot's theme.

Yay! Thanks so much for this! I can't believe the "Close the door! We'll get caught!" wasn't planned at all. That was indeed heartbreaking.

“Acting in SaGeuk is not easy so I wanted to cast people with proven acting talents. " /applause

I'm happy they continued working hard instead of being discouraged. SFD is probably the most popular sageuk I've seen (internationally) in recent years. Also, an overall well-made drama is better than an average one with high ratings. Thank you to all who worked on this production and brought us this awesome show!

rant continues..
Can't believe people made fuss about boys' behavior in YOF Africa enough so that it went to Korea Communications Standards Commission. Commission decided to listen from YOF production officials before they make any (punishment) decision. The scene they enjoyed in the pool being naked (funny that I remember Ryu Joon-yeol said they made the episode fun for the viewers by doing it during the press conference earlier- backfired, ouch!), and some Japanese word on the screen were the reason.

Someone filed complaints to the committee also about the scene where Jin Gu/Seo Dae-young used swearing words to that power plant hot-shot jerk from DOTS. Jin Gu said "I didn't know at first. It was not out of ordinary because I did it in many movies. But on the shooting day, I thought "This can't be right." and I thought I'd be told to take out swearing words, but PD-nim told me to do it anyway because he could edit it out later and if he can't, he'd add beeping on the scene." So something must have gone wrong there.

Talking about Jin Gu, Jin Gu said four of them (Song Song couple and GuWon couple) had a short fun trip to outskirts of Seoul. "Everybody is so carefree and not picky, has good personality. We drank and talked most about the drama. Rather than me talking about my character, Song Hye-gyo ssi told me about SDY character who she sees. Because we had many meetings together before the drama, we were used to each other and feel that there were only fun things during filming."

"There was no competitive atmosphere at the filming site (between first and second couple). Since SS couple had more screen time and they were the stars from the beginning, if our couple outdid them, that would be against rule. For 30 days of shooting in Greece, we did shooting for 10 days, and during other days we went to tease SS couple. Actually I think we were given a lot. Ji-won ssi had her agonizing scene every time and we talked a lot about how to do it, so if we had more parts to play, we might not have had the quality we have now. I think proper quantity we could digest was given to us and we were lucky in that."

About Song Hye-gyo, "She was a star I have worshipped and I was happy just being in the same scene with her. During press conference, Song Joong-gi ssi said his friend told him he had come a long way seeing him acting with SHG, and I thought that applies to myself. I have come a long way, Looking at myself not being nervous made me think that even more."
About cheezy lines which is signature of writer Kim Eun-sook, "You don't do that in real life, so I was ecstatic doing the line. Song Jong-gi ssi does it like a real man. He has pretty boy image, but actually very manly. When there was a line like that he called me and said "There is line which makes no sense." and told me to get ready mentally, but I was thrilled doing the lines since I don't use the words in everyday life. The way I look at it, I also wanted...

The way I look at it, I also wanted to be popular with female audiences and wanted to be a star, but I never had a chance to say those cheezy sweet sentence, so that could have been my wish? So I fulfilled that needs this time. I was so excited after shooting and got ok, but PD-nim felt very sorry for me, saying "I am sorry to make you do this."

About SJG, "I am more of mother type, and he is more of father type. I am stern mother, and he is warm-hearted father. Both of us have tendency of being pathetic (CheunDeaRea). I can't do cheezy things in public, but Jung-gi sse does it without hesitation, like man." Jin Gu also said if he had a choice, he rather have bromance with SGJ than romance with Kim ji-won. "I feel I didn't show enough bonding scenes with SJG in this drama. I think there was only one time in episode 8 where I notified SJG my transfer in the supply storage room. It would have been nice if we could show many bonding moments."

Then we can't forget about Kim Ji-won who plays Yoon Myung-joo. "Song Joong-gi sunbaenim has good physical strength. Any melo, action scenes he did even though he felt exhausted. He was always holding his scripts and I think he got over the hard time with his mental strength. He did lots of workout to do the soldier role. And he did ad-lib very naturally. Since Yoo Si-jin character is cheesy, shameless and carefree, doing ad-lib was prefect. For me I tried to stick to scripts since I was serious character. So there were more scenes Jin Gu and SJG sunbaenim did ad-lib. Actually he has shameless and fun-loving naughty boy like side in real life. We had same relation outside of filming just like the relation between them in the show, and I think that was why unpretentious acting was possible."

About Song Hae-gyo, "I was most nervous when I had the first shooting with Song Hae-gyo. I was such a fan so I was more nervous than I met any male actors. But she took care of me so well and gave me encouragement saying I was doing well, even though I was worried what if she was scary."

And we all know Song Hae-gyo complained that she was treated like a grandma. heh.

ok I am done. Sorry for long rant. Have a good weekend (and happy drama watching) everyone!

I am in the beginning stage of my withdrawal period. In the last six months, I have watched few of the best Korean dramas that currently aired in that period. I watched them as episodes became available and suffered like everyone else waiting for new episodes each week. This week, Six Flying Dragons, ended. Prior to that, Signal and Cheese in the Trap ended. There was also Answer Me 1988 before that. Six Flying Dragons is the breaking point since it was 50 episodes and I was absorbed in that show for six months. Now that it ended, I’m having a difficult time moving on. I’m sure I will, it’s just that it is difficult. It also does not help that they have become my routine this year. Those dramas filled my week. For instance, CITT is on Monday and Tuesday, SFD’s two episodes on Wednesday, and Signal is on Friday and Saturday. Now all three gone and I don’t know what to do. Doing chores and being part of society are out of the options. Hihi!

There are new dramas already airing, namely DotS, Memory, or Pied Piper. There are also upcoming dramas like Vampire Detective and Daebak. I’m sure they will be wonderful in their own way. But for now, I’m not sure I’m willing to wait every week for each episode. Dramafever not carrying Memory and Pied Piper and carrying DotS late does not help either.

I do want to say. Yoo Ah In, you beast!! You amazingly, beautiful beast!! I love you!! You are mesmerizing to watch on screen. SFD was wonderful to watch because of you. Thank you for having the “leverage” to pick a good drama where you can challenge yourself as an actor. I look forward to seeing more of what you can achieve in the future.

Am so loving Yoo Ah In as well. He's so damn sexy in his roles but just looks so sweetly dorky in photo shoots. Who'd think such power could come from a guy who looks like the geeky kid next door? He doesn't have the flakiness of Jung Il Woo or the angst or sexy charm of some other actors but still he's got charisma. Shows the power of skillz to make an actor charismatic!

I feel the same as well. Yoo Ah In in real life (like in interviews etc) is giggly and boyish as opposed to his more serious/intense personas in his projects lol. That is talent indeed! He is just so passionate with his work that he totally transforms into his character. And it is pure pleasure to watch.

Somehow that just made me LOL so hard.

He did really well in SFD. He's got so much gravitas for a young actor.

I'm on the opposite end - though I was devastated when it ended, now for practical reasons, I'm glad that SFD has finally ended and I'm free from my Monday night obligation! 50 episodes was a long ride and I'm not sure if I want to commit to another for a while.

Last weekend I ended up not watching any of the new shows though I did watch Five Kids which I still recommend highly and wow is it getting juicy as some of the main storylines and lovelines are starting to really spark.

So I'm buying a house and I made an offer last weekend which was accepted. Very exciting but the home inspection I had midweek was beyond dreadful and I rescinded my offer. So this weekend I'll have to catch up on things and do some spring cleaning.

This coming Monday, 28 March is going to be a blast!

Three new dramas - Monster, Jackpot and Lawyer Jo Deul Ho.

Monster seems very confident even predicting a rating of 15% for episode 1. I guess it will top the Mon-Tue slot rating but let's see how close or far are the other two dramas.

All good things must come to an end and so does SFD. Haiz...

Hope you are all enjoying yoruself. I managed to drag my crutches onto an airplane and now sat with my grandma for easter. The knee is getting better luckily, but still need the crutches when moving outside.

Dramaland:
I've been maratoning Imperial doctoress. It's so addicting! It's also the only new drama I've started in a long time. Got stuk in a drama down, and it's still lasting it seems. Seriously the only other thing I watch atm is Australian masterchef :P

I recommend Imperial Doctress, at least so far ;) But I do think that you need to like the palace types of historical chinese dramas, alternatively liu shi shi's dramas in general to enjoy it. Like if you hated Bu Bu Jing Xin (which I loved), then I wouldn't recommend this drama.

I feel like I am entering into the intrigue part now soon. But looking forward to what is to come. I already did my initial wikipedia research for the history :P (seriously, I think this is one of the reasons I like historical drams so much, it's an excuse to look up new things)

I will add to the laments for the ending of Six Flying Dragons. It's risky to make a show with essentially seven protagonists and no easy heroes or villains, and yet this one pulled it off. Every time I thought the show would take the easy way out, it doubled down on the difficult, embracing all of its characters in their flawed, sometimes horrific humanity. This may have hurt the ratings, but it lead to a show with remarkable consistency of vision, and some of the finest individual episodes of television I've watched. Show, you will be much missed.

Hello, all:

Am having fun working on two totally different stories. And am now buying a new keyboard and a guitar for hubby. Been wanting a piano in the house for awhile. Am on pins and needles until they arrive.

DRAMAS:

Well, I'm feeling such loss...no more flying dragons. Withdrawal symptoms. Hoping for greatness in the upcoming sageuks and trying to find some time for Jang Yeong Sil.

Glamorous Temptation: I watched the finale. Good Lord! John, how could you endure this thing? This had the worst kind o kdrama redemption arc: the selective kind where most of the lead bad guys are redeemed but those who were bad AND oddballs are left as mockery/sneering fodder. Somehow it felt unbalanced considering how evil our second lead female was.

Wondering if I should try to see The Promise. It's a daily on kbs but I was so burned by "All is Well" and its ending that I don't want to get wrapped up in another daily. BTW, "Happy Together" had a villain special. So much fun. NamGoong Min is just so adorable.

Marriage Contract: Love it but I find myself getting annoyed at how intrusive family and friends can be. Pretty typical but I can endure it. For a story that's going to end badly (apparently), it's not really depressing.

Mr Black: Watching mostly because of Song Jae Rim. So glad he finally showed up.

Descendants: Tried to watch but the string of "exciting" and "dangerous" stuff happening randomly is exhausting and boring. I would rather nothing happening, rather than everything happening.

Ms Temper: Am liking this a lot. There's a bittersweetness to the main character that really connects to me. His personality is very like mine, silent, non-confronting, and somewhat cowardly with annoying folks.

Memory: I might continue watching but this feels like it will be one heart-breaking depressing slog. Am hoping for a found family between bereaved mother and accidental murderer. One can hope.

Ms Cop: I wish I liked Ahjumma cop more. I tend to get impatient with self-willed, stubborn characters who insist on having their own way. I'm watching this because of psycho chaebol. If he has a crush on Not-Ahjumma Cop, it'll be perfect. Ready for angst-filled lovelorn baddie. A villain hampered by love was what I liked in Gap Dong and what I wanted in Remember.

That's it. Have a great weekend, all.

Oh my gosh, Glamorous Temptation! I have to tell you! ..... So my mom has been watching this and she's been keeping me in the loop. Anyway, I don't know what episode she's on, but she tells me, "...and then the prime minister was sentenced for 2 or 3 yrs but he suddenly is out of jail. I have no idea how he got out of jail!"

I say, "That's what Carole said!"

Mom: "Who's Carole?"

Me: "From OT .... you know, the Dramabeans group. She mentioned that she has not figured out how he got released."

Mom: "We'll please tell Carole that she's absolutely right! I don't know either. Nobody knows."

I like Kim Bum a lot but his portrayal of the villain screams "villainous." He seems a bit over-the-top and clichéd sometimes. And other times he's so emo. I just don't want him to be too one-note with that psycho head tilt and sneering and flaky eye-acting. And yes I really do like him...but the acting is a bit....over-acted.

"And other times he's so emo."

*laughing*

Seriously though, uh oh ..... does he really go into the over-the-top zone?? That can't be good. In the first two eps I watched he seemed ok to me ...... showing just enough to set things up for the rest of the show. I guess I'll have to watch a little more and then decide if things are tolerable or not.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

He's more tolerable than intolerable. If you accept the fact that so many kdrama villains just over-telegraph their evil or their psychosis in EVERY scene. It might just be what's expected of psychos in kdramas. I would just like him to have and additional personality trait. Psycho? yes. Jealous over Mom? yes. into dispassionate sex? yes. Violent? Yes. But no sense of humor or moment of lightness yet. As is expected of angsty villains.

0

I'm a big fan of Kim Bum too, but I'm kinda with you on the sneering. He should also tone down the eyebrow acting. However, I'd like to acknowledge his performance in the flashback scene of episode 6. His transition to maniacal cackle in the midst of crying gave me shivers. I thought he nailed it.

0

Required fields are marked *

LOL! Yes, the eyebrow acting has got to go. His performance with dying dad did make him feel like poor little thinks-he-is-unloved rich boy. I felt so sorry for him. Cause honestly, you can't suddenly thrust a rich kid into poverty because you're all "I feel guilty because I was a loan shark and I don't want to taint my boy." It's not logical or kind to the kid.

Not really watching anything else (DOTS doesn't catch my fancy) except for Five Enough which is hilarious. The kids are adorable and I think one of them is the Crown Lrince in SFD! Team-jang-nim is suuuuch a nice person. I was yelling at his second brother though. it is a dessert made of quark cheese, orange peel, raisins, crushed nuts, chopped apricots, eggs, butter and vanilla. it has to be put into a wooden mold and stay there for 2 days and then you take it out and it is like a tower of quark. and you decorate it with kumquat and apricots. yum yum

0

oh my gosh! That pasha sounds so good. Wondering now if I should google the recipe or go find it on youtube.

0

one possible recipe:

100 g of soft butter
1 dl of sugar
500 g of room temperature quark
1-2 tsp of lemon juice
(1 large free-range egg)
1 tsp vanilla exstract
0,5 cups of chopped walnuts
100 g of dried raisins and/or cranberries + I usually add chopped apricots, kumquats
2 dl of 35% whip cream

for decoration: walnuts, apricot hearts, cranberries

whip butter with sugar, whip cream separately with vanilla. add quark and egg to the whipped butter, then the chopped nuts and fruit, then carefully stir in cream. pour into a mold (or a sieve) and let stand for a day in the fridge, pour out on a plate and decorate it.

different recipe with heating:

1 kg of quark
4 large free-range eggs
200 ml 10% cream
200 ml sugar
50 g of almond flour
1,5 tsp of vanilla sugar
some minced orange peel (kept in syrup) or some chopped kumquats & peel of one lemon

everything to be mixed and heated on a water bath until it becomes very sticky, then pour into the mold or sieve. the rest as with the first.

the amount of stuff you put in varies depending on what you can get.

thanks everyone for the coffee, I am fine now, but for the first 2 hours it felt like I am going to go "Welcome to the Seaplane Harbour!" and gush blood from my nose, then fall down and raise my shaking hand from behind the counter: "Here.... are your tickets!"

I actually wanted to discuss dramas today, or upcoming dramas, but didnt have time. Tomorrow is another workshop as well. I find it interesting that there is a Beast & Beauty theme (you could say even Miss Temper and whatever also falls into that category?) and coincidentally, I went to see the old Beauty and The Beast French movie by Cocteau. It was SO embarrassing, but I must say during the black and white era they did know how to use light and shade. But that cheese...!

I was wondering. if some things carry a time-stamp or are kind of characteristic of the mentality of a certain period, what would be the dramas that mark an "era" and what are the keywords to that era? how would you devide the eras?

The cheese in old stuff is a bit of a hurdle but I can deal with Beauty and the Beast. It has a sweet charm. Now...Leslie Howard in ANYTHING but especially in Romeo and Juliet ....well that is just amaaaaaaaaaaaaazingly hard to watch! All the flutteriness of language, all the high-floating speeches. Cringe-city. But that was what women loved back in the day. Leslie was leading man...well, after Valentino.

Happy OT Friday! And for those on holiday, have a great one! :)

Dramas this week:

Six Flying Dragons- Thank you! I love you! Goodbye! (well, until my next rewatch, that is) ..went straight to my top favorite kdramas of all time <3

DoTS- Ah, this show for me is curing the pain from the loss of Signal and SFD. This week's episodes continue to amuse and entertain me. Lol don't know how often I rewatched episodes. This week had also great forward movement for for both couples and the overall story. Can't wait for next week!

Marriage Contract - Checked it out bec of the nice reviews here. It's sweet though at times (I'm sorry) I get upset with the little girl and how she disregards her mother's pleas. I'm scared that she might get into a bigger accident. I mean she seems bright enough to understand but sometimes she comes off as a bit bratty? I feel so mean for saying that, gosh. Also, I get frustrated with the lead girl's friends and in laws. Like where do they come off judging her harshly for her decisions when they haven't even helped her especially with the huge debt from her husband?? Either support her (if they are truly concerned) or let her be.

Come Back Ahjussi - Dropped. I really couldn't stand Rain's whiny character and don't know where the story is going. Though I became a fan of Oh Yeon Seo! Will watch out for her next project.

Memory - On hold. Good first episode just too sad for me at the moment.

Goodbye Mr. Black - Excited to start this!

Eunsang in Marriage Contract shines the best in ep 5 and 6 for me,
I feel like her kid portrayal is natural as kid cause she will mature later and she's good.
She is bratty and I think she knew that, but she is a kid, the attitude changes is what make me fall for her.

The jdrama Kazoku no Katachi is my absolute favorite drama right now. Aka forms of family, and state of union.
The subtle dry humor, the slow but precise build to each emotional reveal prove this drama is deftly written.
our hero begins the story as a withdrawn solitary man ,removed from meaningful relatioships as a way to protect himself.

And now, by the ninth episode, (9/10) he has opened his heart to; his stepbrother, a newly wedded coworker, a coworker caught up in marriage fraud, his estranged father, his father's wife, a young lady who thought he was a potential husband, and most importantly the woman who lives up stairs from him.
it has been a graceful lovely slow build to the changed man that he is now. Still grumpy but now with concern for his fellow man.

Required fields are marked *

Kazoku ni Katachi is pretty good and certainly has its heart in its right place.

I did at times struggle with it though, particularly with the two parents just taking over their kids' personal space without asking at all. And Hanako's mom... she really annoyed me with her trying to push her daughter, repeatedly, despite being asked not to, despite seeing her daughter uncomfortable, towards the ex-husband. It would have been one thing if she had tried to set her up with a new guy, but when a marriage is over, it's over and I think you need to trust your own child made the right choice even if you don't know the reason and think the ex is oh-so-perfect (even if he might be) for her.

Also somehow found Mizuhara Kiko – both the character and the actress – unbearable in this. Though at least by the end she says a couple of reasonable things and the restaurant she took Daisuke to was interesting (googled it afterwards).

Required fields are marked *

Mizuhara Kiko is one of the most gorgeous human beings I have ever laid eyes on, but I have to say, she makes a far, far better model than an actress.

The only acting projects I've ever liked her in were Norwegian Wood and Nobunaga Concerto, and she wasn't the main lead in either of them.

Ueno Yuri has the lead role here fortunately, but Mizuhara is sort of a second lead (sort of – it's still more of an ensemble drama, but she does play the love rival so it's a more prominent role than the rest of the supporting characters).

That's how I feel about the pushy relatives/friends in Mrs Cop and in Marriage Contract. On the one hand, I wish folks would stop intruding. But on the other hand, I keep wishing the protagonists would just speak up a bit more. I had to laugh when Ahjumma cop decided to be all honest about the wrongful imprisonment but somehow didn't tell the entire truth about the situation. With a husband like that, she should know to be utterly honest about him to everyone -- including meddling DAD and her chief-- or to be completely silent. And why are dying tumor-ridden heroines so recalcitrant about telling their best friends that they are dying? It's like the kdrama culture allows for certain kinds of honesty..but just so much.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Well, in KnK the protagonists do speak up, so that's not the issue here, they just don't physically throw their parents out of their house (which I'd do... well, not physically, but I'd change the lock while they are out or something).

<why are dying tumor-ridden heroines so recalcitrant about telling their best friends that they are dying

It doesn't make sense to me either. Well, I know it's only because otherwise the drama wouldn't have much of a story to tell because somehow writers can't figure out any other way to tell the story than to use contrived twists of this sort...

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ah! I kept wondering if there was some cultural issue with silence and suffering without asking emotional help from other folks.

0

I think main protagonist can't tell that they are dying in this case as Hye Soo from Marriage Contract is because they don't know what's the benefit from that.

she finds a perfect way out and she said she'll start the therapy after the liver transplant, I guess she'll tell her friends after the operation.
Making a fuss about her death will sabotage the whole donor things and she desperately needs money for Eun Sang future.
As very poor orphan and single mom, she's that desperate.

for other character, maybe because I am Asian, I always get told that
"It better not to trouble others"
there must be a way to solve it without troubling others that has too many problem already. Especially the things about fate, it wasn't that bad to think 1st and know what we want about our condition, held back is better option (ofc not for a long time)
It's hard until you have no other better option,
well ofc drama make the revelation more dramatic.

Also, I feel so proud of myself: I wrote my term paper on nature and nurture in I Remember You. It was the most fun ten pages of my life. There's just so much to talk about!

I have no time to watch recently. Lame, graduating kinda takes up some time. But I've been following the recaps for:

Goodbye Mr. Black: Looks like it's on an uphill slope, for now. I'll probably watch it when it's done.

DotS: Seems great for a light watch, and I've heard rave reviews from friends. It's on my list.

CBA: Reading the recaps, the humor seems spot on for me at some times, kinda off at others. I'll give it a go.

Memory: I haven't heard much about this one, but what I have heard is good.

Marriage Contract: WHY DON'T I HAVE TIME TO WATCH THIS! Aaagh, it's exactly what I love in a storyline, done well... Maybe after the term ends.

Watching:
Big Man (see, I still haven't finished)
You Are Beautiful (I started it with my friend, and now I need to finish for closure's sake)

I remember attempting to watch a show about a month ago. I felt so prudish because I will watch many types of movies but somehow to turn on TV and to see the utter lack of romance in the sex scenes, and to see the way politics and unnecessary societal sneering popping up in almost every show.. I was like.. REALLY?

I have no doubt some folks in Korea might catch on to some societal issues that I'm clueless about. But even so, it's not like every show is in your face pushy cynical sneery pushy. When I saw the western shows I thought, "Dang! there is a lot of rudeness and cruelty and downright arrogance toward the viewers in western shows."

OMG I wish I had more time to actually marathon Signal - starting episode 5 tonight. I feel that this is another drama that I can recommend to non-Kdrama watcher friends, the hook is amazing and fast-paced. I feel so left out not live watching it, but it's for the better. I would have hated to wait a week after a cliffhanger episode.

I am still on Signal withdrawal so I am now watching Ghost.

I love the plot, it reminds me so much of Signal and how it keeps me on edges and wanting to marathon it.

The directing I can live with, it's not as dark (and as artsy) as Signal but it makes it a lighter watch.

But the actors, oh my! I know this was out few years ago, but So Ji Sub was so bad! The female lead was even worse. I cannot help compare it with the brilliant trio leads in Signal.

I would agree about the leads for Ghost - LYH was basically a non-factor on the drama, and SJS was not as effective in translating Daniel Choi/Hades role which is a huge part of the show. Otherwise, the story and side characters saved it, I especially love Mad Cow and Um Ki-joon. I didn't even realize Signal and Ghost were from the same production team which makes a lot of sense now.

Yep, same writer. You can feel the similarities when watching but the ambience is a bit different I'm assuming because the director is different. Signal is way more intense and gripping - although in saying that, every other shows I have watched pale to compare.

I put the embargo on currently airing kdramas, but I did try some Korean-style makeup a few days ago.

You guys probably know the look - bright lip colour applied to only the inner parts of the lips, eyeliner applied in a downward-slanting shape, straight eyebrows and bb cream. It didn't look bad at all, except for the lip stuff - it looks weird, like I'm dying of consumption after eating an ice lolly. And I am not a big fan of bb cream, I do not like having stuff on my cheeks.

East of Eden watching halted at just one episode this week. Song Seung-heon is very handsome but lord he's terrible at acting. And Park Hae-jin is very handsome AND good at acting.

In non-kdrama news: I'm watching Peaky Blinders. I think it's reignited my love of Cillian Murphy, and the postwar costumes are a bonus.

Pogo:

I have a lipgloss thing that sorta does that look. It has three shades of colour on it, so when you put it on a certain way it creates the same effect, but a it sutler than you see sme idols wearing it. But I totally see your point about looking like you have ice lolly juice stuck n your lips.

as for bb cream, it is the only foundation thing I tolerate wearing. A lot better than having foundation and powder and who knows in layers. Haven't had that since my days performing and I don't miss it at all.

0

Required fields are marked *

Your lip gloss sounds prettier than what I got, my ice lolly effect lips just made me look a bit ill and like my lips were chapped. And it stained!

I'm not in the habit of wearing foundation at all, even the bb cream felt like a lot. I do have a tinted moisturiser that is much lighter in formula and actually feels like nothing when it's on, and that is about my limit when it comes to skin makeup.

It is nice, though I tend to use it so that teh shades mix a little more though. But I really wonder what I'll do once it runs out. I really like it, but I got it as a gift in china and I don't have the box. So no idea how to get one again :P

Yeah I get you. I don't wear makeup normally, so using bb cream is my "I'm getting proper prettied up" thing. The one I have though is really light, so you don't notice it once it's on. In a way it's like a tinted moisturiser, just with a little more coverage. I couldn't do it if it was a heavy one.

Hah, I've been wearing some Korean style make-up too.

I normally really loathe foundations so have been happy that I can live with CC cream on for the day - the texture feels lighter. Not really a make up person but needed for work.

A friend taught me a subtler version of the lip thing - which is to use a coloured lipgloss and lipstick of similar colour. Put on the gloss first, blot a bit, so the shininess is subdued and then purse lips like you're going to whistle, and twizzle the lipstick in the middle. It avoids the clear demarcation but still gives the effect on intensifying colour in the middle.

Cillian Murphy rocks anything - even in a tranny wig and 70s skintight trousers.

Hi Beanies! I've been reading this blog for months now and this is my very first comment! 8-D

I've so far watched the first 9 eps of Come Back, Ahjussi. The plot's kind of a mess and Young-soo is definitely getting on my nerves with how he's handling things, but I love the comedy. (Oh Yeon-seo is KILLING IT.) CBA is a huge, hilarious change from Signal -- which I marathoned last week (... still haven't recovered). Signal is definitely my favorite drama of the year, and ties with Healer as my favorite drama ever.

Debating trying out Descendants of the Sun and Goodbye Mr. Black. DotS isn't gripping my attention despite the recaps I've been glancing at, and I'm waiting to see how GMB shapes up; still too early to tell from the recaps, at least for me.

Have a Happy Friday and a Happy Easter, everyone!

After the mess that is Cheese, i promise to myself not gonna watch another airing drama until it ends and really makes sure no annoying surprises. So my current option is kinda limited.

Finally finishing Signal. GOOD GOD IT WAS SO AWESOME I CAN'T EVEN.....
Huh, love love love the whole thing. I am glad i don't need to wait every week and marathon the whole thing. What my heart will become otherwise. Now i demand TvN to set up its own drama award so that i can see Jo Jin Woong getting his deserving award, or anyone from #TeamSignal for that matter. Kim Hyesoo is such a delight to watch (is she really in her 40s?) and Lee Je Hoon offers a refreshing, relatable take on genius profiler character that i love. And that ending! GOSH now let's add Signal to the list of dramas with awaiting second season that we won't know when they will be out.

I think i need help ? i can't move on, still reading recaps and plan to re-watch this weekend haha.

Meanwhile, Dragons ends this week sobs.
I still haven't picked up from ep 32 but my heart already hurts because of the farewell party people throw on my timeline. Now next thing is to marathon this yaaay.

Been checking comments for Mr. Black, for the sake of the casts i really wish this will be good until the end. Will watch once it ends. But no more watching airing dramas so time to catch up on IOIL, Misaeng and Two Weeks. I am sooooo behind i know ?

For non kdrama stuff, anyone following Elementary? That ending is a very nice and interesting surprise i tell ya. But i am up to whatever they throw at Joan, especially with this promising arc to be expected.

Have fun watching you guyssss!!!

Misaeng is bleak at times but imo it's not depressing, just rather realistic (most of the people calling it depressing, in my experience, are ones who've never worked office jobs).

I think the ultimate message of the drama is hugely uplifting, even if it's not the typical fight-the-system story people expect when a drama has a setting like this.

All the good reviews about Misaeng reaaaaaally makes me curious, and it has Byun Yo Han too yay!

I love Signal and the PD is the same right? That is hugely promising.

SIGNAL!
Saved this up for watching in a binge and watch it I did!Oh man!what a ride! What a show! I loved it to pieces. This is the first time I've wholeheartedly enjoyed a modern crime-thriller K-drama (I Remember You was not bad, but Signal was on a completely different level)
Know this might be late but kudos to the writers/directors and actors for creating this wonderful story. So very looking forward to season 2 (there will be season 2 right?right?) since I am now suffering from SIGNAL withdrawal :)

SFD : ? ? ? need I say more?

Currently watching:

Come back Mister: Hmmm...still cheering on OYS and her Scooby gang. A bit exasperated with Rain's story arc though.

Mr.Black: Hopefully things will get more interesting and revengeful. MCW is very sweet, LJW very handsome. KKW awesome as a villian and YIY is very good.Actually YIY is proving to be quite a versatile actress-she should do more different genres rather than being stuck in the same role of an ex-gf/unloved wife etc.She would do very well in deadpan humour!

Marriage contract : I love how natural UEE and her daughter's interactions are in this show. A little worried that the child is a bit bratty.

Hey Beanies!
Happy Friday! First: shout out to the Beanies who introduced me to Autumn's Concerto. Its the first Taiwanese drama I've been able to keep up with. It's pretty nice and I'm close to the end. I had to stop for a bit cause I kind of want to throat punch the drama for how some of the characters are acting lol. I think I'll finish it this weekend.
As for current dramas, I caught the first 2 episodes of Ms. Temper and found myself thinking about likability. For those who've seen the drama, you know that the female lead is no none sense and assertive (may be interpreted as being a jerk) while the male lead is more humble, passive and generally nice. As I was watching the drama, I had to catch myself cause I was getting irritated with the female lead, which is crazy cause her behavior is similar to about 80% of the male leads in dramaland!! It got me thinking kind of how in literature and movies, unlikable female characters are often criticized while male characters are thought of as interesting. Did watching the drama bring that up for any of you?

Required fields are marked *

I'm not watching Mrs Temper, but I noticed the complaints about other 'unlikable' female characters in certain other shows - namely Ryu Hye-young in Answer Me 1988, Kim Ji-won in Heirs.

There are flawed kdrama heroines who behave in an 'unlikable' manner, do not get 'punished' by the story for it but still get a lot of love; two notable examples are Jung Eun-ji in Answer Me 1997 and Lee Bo-young in I Hear Your Voice.

But in general, female leads who behave like the men do, don't get the same excuses made for them.

Nope. The female lead is the only character I like in this drama so far – and I totally didn't expect that (I assumed she was going to be some sort of sassy girl character, which I'm not fond of).

She's simply honest and a no-nonsense/no-bullshit person. She's professional in her job (she didn't blink an eye when they asked her to serve coffee, she just did it – without spitting in it or dropping in poison ;-) – and then started the meeting, which only derailed because the three guys were utterly incompetent at their job, not because she was mean). She will also draw the line because she's got integrity and doesn't bow down just because she's supposed to do that in the very hierarchical and sexist society that she lives in. If someone throws water at her, she throws it back. Why shouldn't she?

Flaws: I do think she doesn't always see the (if unintended) consequences of her actions – the bike caused her trouble, but her moving boxes also inconvenienced her neighbours (which she didn't realise). Forcing her neighbour to pay for the mover's injury was harsh, but the moment she realised she was wrong about this, she corrected the issue. Same with the kid – she might have looked like she was being mean to him on the surface, but she did very quickly strike a deal with him.

Everyone else in the drama I'm finding pretty idiotic as they are false-faced, constantly blaming others, talking behind other people's backs, smiling fakely when they need something or just want to keep up appearances, etc etc.

The male lead... well, you could also look at him as pathetic. This is not to say I have no sympathy for him, but sometimes he's just being plain dumb. Things like enabling your brother isn't being nice, because it comes at the cost of everyone else in the family.

Well, the drama has to start somewhere.

I quite like the premises with a man with a lot of insecurities. Changes from the frequent I-know-it-all/I-have-it-all/ I-am-a-real-man-setting.

He has a long way to go, for sure. He is not young, he has responsibilities for his family – I think these are quite real-world problems.

I just hope, the show delivers… waiting for the next embarrassment

I find ms temper & Nam Jung Gi as reverse role in every drama with male boss and nice female situation.

She is no bullshit type of person but also not a listening type.
On why the female gets critique, I think it because more drama audience is female and we have this ideal portrayal of woman and when it portrait the other said of the normal ideal , it easy to find the fault.
Many woman find the male is irritating too but most of the watcher put themselves in heroine shoes so they can see the other side of the supposed hero and find it bearable (also add the point of being attracted to the hero) but seeing it as 3rd person will being a whole new perspective.

My example maybe Siwon character in SWP, lots of people root for him when I think that's really wasn't the case for him and HJE character. He still portrayed as nice man but I can see how he isn't the right choice in the show when lots of people put their type of man into consideration and choose him as the best.

It's Good Friday which means Easter is just around the corner. The weather was so rainy this week but maybe things will get better on Sunday. I really hope so!

Catholics are always in a depressed mood during Holy Week as a tribute to our journey toward Easter. So I watched a K-drama to lift my spirit because even my doctrate thesis is boring me to death right now. I know, I should use the Easter break to catch up with my research but I thought a good rom-com could be a perfect antidepressant and boy, was I right! Three words: She. Was. Pretty, full stop!

Why? Why didn't I watch this last year? Just, WHY? It's funny, fluffy, has a great OTP which did a wonderful job making me forget their last project altogether, original second leads and a storyline somewhere between Betty, La Fea and Beauty and The Beast in reverse. A funny fairytale!

I'm already on episode 10 and I'm loving it. I can't laugh out loud and it's painful. Really! Fortunately the family is doing a great job with the house preparations leaving me alone with my laptop for a couple of hours each day. Thanks hubby, you're my guardian angel ever since we met!

@ Lemona, I'm a huge fan of DotS. My thrist for this show is at mass critical. But, I have to be honest, the plot is like the Little Engine That Could. There are glimmers of a plotline but it hasn't completely blossomed yet.

Ultimately, I think disaster dramas are very tricky to write because the background is too multifaceted; Especially, when you try to cover both medical and military. Had the writer chosen one area it could have focused the story a lot. Right now, it's a bit "story of the week" in format so the ultimate plot may end up being rushed.

I have watched Rondo – that's one I like quite a lot! It has got bits of everything! But nearly everything with Takenouchi is very enjoyable (he always plays such soulful characters, except in Sad Vacation).

Another old gem with a similar vibe is Tokei Wankei. It doesn't have the thriller bit and few more cliché/cheesy elements, but also puts both Japan/Korea into the story and a romance that feels real (between adults!). Though sadly they didn't cast a Korean actress for this one (even if I have a hard time complaining about Nakama Yukie – paired wonderfully with Wada Soko here).

Hi Everyone,

Chuno (aka The Slave Hunters): Finished it earlier this week. So glad I gave in and watched it. Another memorable role from Jang Hyuk. Still listening to the OST/soundtrack. After watching the eye-catching cinematography of Chuno, find it hard to believe Neighborhood Hero's Director is Kwak Jung-Hwan is the same person who directed Chuno. Really????

Currently watching:
All's Well With a Happy Home (aka Happy Home: Watching it for Kim So-Yeon, Lee Pil-Mo, and Lee Sang-Woo. It's my first time seeing Lee Pil-Mo in a role that cold, distant and not charismatic on some level.
Come Back, Ajusshi: Love Oh Yeon-Seo as Hong-Nan/Gi-Tak. A highlight each week to watch OYS and Rain as a comedy duo.
Descended From the Sun: Would have dropped it if not for the bromance of Shi-Jin and Dae-Young and the mire scrapings of storyline we're given on the second OTP couple Seo Dae-Young & Yoon Myung-Joo.
Mrs. Cop 2: Love the wardrobe selections and styling for Kim Sung-Ryoung. Kim Beom as Lee Ro-Joon - I keep picturing and wanting to imagine Shin Sung-Rok and Namgung Min in the role.
Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki: I like it.

Hope sometime this weekend I can check out Memory. Still on the fence about checking out Goodbye Mr. Black. As others have lamented - still reeling from Cheese in the Trap - hesitant to fall for get attached to currently airing dramas. Because of this, I look forward to continuing to catch up on older dramas.

I watched (most of) the slightly older Night after Night / When It's At Night this week. Really have to say that I like Kim Sun-ah a lot, she strikes me as a very atypical kdrama actress (in looks and acting style). She always, even in dramas I don't care for that much (MNIKSS), plays characters with such inner strength.

When It's At Night also felt more Japanese-y in style than Korean. I mean, they took a totally random profession and made a drama about it – with that as the focus, not as some mostly-irrelevant background material.

Giant is awesome if you can survive the overly melodramatic opening episodes. Once the adults show up things get better fast. On the plus side though, the childhood episodes do have Yeo Jin Gu.

I agree that Neighborhood Hero isn't a work of art like Chuno is (if you're a fan of his directing, you should watch Conspiracy in the Court! It's not as polished as Chuno, perhaps, but imo it's his best work). But I think NH is a very Kwak Jung-hwan show in a lot of ways--the action scenes are beautifully put together, there have been some amazingly creative and/or experimental shots that sadly did not quite work out (for instance that scene in the first episode where we watch the Truck of Doom plow into them from inside their car was insane--but it turned awkward and lulzy because of the actors were not in the moment), the editing is very fluid, and the entire thing comes together into an extremely atmospheric visual world (most of the characterization has been his work, not the writer's, for example; ditto the camp/comedy).

Required fields are marked *

Even if the action started off serious it would deliberately throw in a comical bent/slant. Realized early on that I was looking for/expecting another My Beautiful Bride (the gritty feel and stouthearted hero) which was never what NH was trying to be or do. The action scenes/sequences/shots - couldn't help but think back to/compare them to how My Beautiful Bride would have filmed and handled similar scenes. Chalk it up to Cruel City & My Beautiful Bride setting a really high bar and personal preferences.

Six Flying Dragons!
What a watching experience....!
I don't even know who to compliment first from writer to director to cast to action scenes, cameramen to music ......for me it was that perfect.
The fact that it made me look up the Korean history is very telling about the impact of this drama
Secondly, my watching having slowed down in the last 6 episodes is an indication is of how much I am dreading seeing the end of a character that have really become alive for me thanks to their amazing acting.
I love the shades of good and bad, weak and strong mix of each character.
Have to give credit to all concerned for not glorifying the main characters.....leaving it to the audience to come to a conclusion themselves about them and their actions.
The cast specially Yoo Ah in's acting in being able to show the struggle within while making a difficult decision as LBW....has to be acknowledged. Though cannot relate to LBW's actions .....but could follow his train of thoughts as he grew from a young impressionable boy to becoming a King as he faced traumatic events in his life. YAI's acting can take credit for it.
I want to discuss others in the cast too since they did so well too but got 2 go.....

To those who celebrate: Happy Easter!

DOTS -- I actually enjoyed episodes 7 and 8 more than 9 and 10.

Marriage Contract -- I can't help thinking of the real (grumpy) Lee Seo-Jin, and I'm pleasantly surprised by UEE's acting here. I can't wait for Ji-hoon to get closer to the two ladies (Hye-soo and the little firecracker girl). I like that JH's mom is aware of the whole setup.

You from Another Star -- I read so much about it but never had the desire to watch it. I finally caved in and am marathoning it. So far, I'm on episode 5 and found it okay. I'm more interested by the flashback stories than the present time.

Refresh Man (tdrama) -- I was disappointed at how the writer depicted YT in episode 3. I didn't approve of her using her body to flirt with the buyers nor of her using her own money to purchase the products. It is true that her team wasn't helpful at all. I didn't expect her to come out with a solution, but she is a smart lary. She could have asked other people/sales teams/online/books/etc for advice. And when told that flirting would be the approach, did she not have any single doubt? Did she think that using her own savings was a solution? I just wished the writer didn't show her so desperate. End of my rant.

On refresh man, I only read recaps for the 1st and 2nd EPS and watched the 3rd.
On YT, I think that she is under extreme pressure. The challenge is clearly too much to handle, but when you add the CEO/former loser it the pressure becomes overwhelming... It transform from being work matter into personal territory. Thus I can understand that her behavior and thoughts at the time were irrational and extreme. She made choices that she would not have made in normal circumstances.
On another matter, the most is driving me crazy, I've been playing them nonstop, I think it's cruel for the production not to release them till now

I feel that DotS is transitioning me for Summer dramas which i'm so looking forward to watching. I love Spring and Summer series because they tend to be lighter and easier watches. Shows like Marriage, Not Dating & Ex-Girlfriends' Club are just the perfect easy enjoyable shows you need during the hotter months.

Next, what makes for a good drama actor? Is it the sum total of the actor's body of work or the last drama the person starred in? Like most people, I'm a huge fan of Yoon Eun Hye. For all its faults, Lie to Me is a classic in my eyes & she was undeniable in Goong & 1st Coffee Prince. But we can't ignore Mi-Rae's Choice...

From my perspective, acting talent is what makes a good actors irrespective of their drama choices. Unfortunately not all good actors choose good dramas also I think luck does play a role.
I'm jang keun suk fan, and I'm praying for years so he would come back to acting and choose a good project.

Come Back, Mister: I really like this one. I'm a sucker for angst with comedy and this one provides that. Some of the whine factor in Rain's character calms down mid-way through the series as some realizations set in. Love the two "guys" when they get together. I just sit back and enjoy this one.

DOTS: I think we are finally getting somewhere with episodes 9 & 10 and before that we were just meandering along. I was enjoying it for the most part but it was paced oddly. Deserved or not, I'm happy for the high ratings just to show that it can still be done.

With the fantastic Signal and the mediocre but oddly charming Madame Antoine finishing up, I'm only watching two dramas. I'm considering watching Six Flying Dragons as I usually am always watching a historical but have been burned too many times and I want them to finish up first.

Long week for me but K-world as always was my escape, although my drama list and watching time drastically decreased :
- Running man : awkward episode, the change of director is obvious , I did not enjoy the ep but just keep watching
- 1n2d : an episode where I learn some korean history , a sad episode but a moving one
- Kpop star S5 : it's not as entertaining as it was, but I will keep watching just to know the end and for Lee Soo Jung
- and the only drama of the week : DOTS watch the ep raw and again with subtitles : I just LOVED ep 9 and its kisses (truck kiss with...hay haahahah :) ) , ep 10 was so so, but the preview of 11 scares me a little
But I agree with others : I enjoy the drama (actors, chemistry, OST, scenery, humor) but some tense/action scenes are rushed too much, also trying to figure out the plot, until now it's like event one, event two,.. but with SJK 's smile I'll let it pass

Last weekend : Infinite challenge poor Joon Ha, he will be very busy this year , and some eps of It's okay it's love up to ep 10 it's good

I may have recover a little from Cheese trauma, I started to listen again to the Ost. Also I watch on youtube/KBSworld / Gag concert Catchphrase clip (I love that type of humor) but as soon as it began I knew it was CITT parody, I laughed to the references although it brought CITT controversy and bad ending memories :/

For the Easter week-end : some things to do, eat chocolate, continue It's okay it's love, and begin a long-time project : my 3000 pieces jigsaw puzzle :D !!!)

Happy drama watching to all beanies :)

Hi everyone,
Have a great weekend!

Come Back, Mister: good laughs sometimes, and the other times dull and boring. My favorite character is Oh Yeon-seo!! I really like her scenes.. she's so funny! I just keep thinking at the end, the two mister will leave, so I wonder what will happen to their characters ( Lee Hae-joon and Han Hong-nan). I wish Han Hong-nan can stay and her soul transforms somehow to a female and falls in love with Seung-jae (I know, crazy thoughts!!).
Also I've realized few moments where the music that is playing doesn't suit the on-going scene at all.

Marriage Contract: Enjoying the show so far. The little girl is so cute. Lee Seo-jin and his dimples!! I actually like Uee in this role. I find it very different from that in High society.

Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki: Neutral feeling so far.

DotS: I like the different sides of this show. it really highlights how people's profession sometime control the way they think, the priorities in the life of a soldier (whose task is to fight the bad guys) and that of a doctor (whose duty is to save the guy even if he is bad). Actually I found that Kang Mo-yeon really needed a lot of time before deciding to date Yoo Si-jin. But then it's true that no one can evade death, soldier or not. The romance is amazing between all leads. I just hope that the show continues like this and please don't kill anyone at the end..

Completely random question: I see this poster in a lot of kdrsmas. I basically ignored it but now, I see it all the time and I want to know who it is. It's a cartoon poster, close up face of a redheaded woman with tears welling up and about to overflow from her eyes (especially the right eye). I think the eyes are blue.

I assumed it was Mary Jane from Spiderman but I googled that and the poster didn't come up. Is it a famous Korean cartoon character?

I am really late this time to OT
fatigues got the best of me.

I didn't watch anything much this week
DoTS still very much entertain me,

Marriage Contract got the best of my time,
I love how Eunsang view on her dad parallel with how Hye Soo since Eundang doesn't have any memory about him. She said the right thing.
I also love how Hye Soo actually really afraid that Ji Hoon came into their life, she's too afraid to trust anybody and I feel like it just fit.
I am rooting for their family

Silent Separation/My Sunshine : this is adorable,
rekindled past love is something that doesn't actually need explanation when you can't start to really understand whether you still love the other person or not.

I watch DOTS and I love the bromance between Song Joong Ki and Jin Goo. Can't believe this drama is already more than halfway, only 6 more episodes.
Meanwhile, Kim So Hyun's web drama is really good. Does anyone watch Nightmare High/Nightmare Teacher? It has such creepy vibe but no scary ghost visually. I didn't have high expectation about it but yurns out the story is intersting, KSH and Um Ki Joon are awesome, and the supporting young actors/actresses are good. Plus the music and sound effect really suit the creepy vibe

Hi Beanies!
I'm relatively new to Kdramas and all dramas in general, because I watched for a while then RL got busy (had a kid!). Now I want some recommendations as I have some time on my hands for the next few months. What's good?
I've watched and enjoyed You're Beautiful (so long ago!), and Taiwan dramas Just You, Down with Love (you can see I've been so out of touch!); currently watching DOTS and loving the OTP interactions and bromance but the plot is...!? Also started Healer and really enjoying that!
What should I watch after I'm done with Healer while waiting for DOTS every week? ;)

Since you are new to Kdrama, there;s so much I can suggest , but do you have a favorite genre? or what you look for?
and since you watched You're beautiful so I suggest

- The Greatest Love story 2011, romantic comedy, highly reccomended, just try 6 episode 1st
- Reply 1997 (2012), very shot, fun and enjoyable youth story, really good drama imo
- Arang and the Magistrate, 2012, good saeguk fantasy drama to start a saeguk/period drama if you want and it short, 20 ep
- City Hunter (2011), action drama, I hope you give it a chance
- Coffee Prince (2007), another girl disguise as boy but in better and more believable way, this maybe old but still good

I hope you can enjoy this

Thanks Cozybooks and Sancheezy! I shall start with the Rom coms and work my way down the lists. ?
I don't have a particular genre I like, the acting and plot is more impt, and if the lead actor is good looking, then it's a bonus! ?
Oh but my only rule is that it must have a happy ending. RL has too much sadness already!

Has anyone watched Infinity Challenge's Ugly Friend special? So freakin funny. The third episode had me laughing so hard, I guess that must have been the funniest watch for me for such a long time (and I always watch RM every week!)

Can anyone recommend me a good IC episode? Preferably recent ones so it will not be hard to find on internet. Some episodes I have watched:
-Jack Black episode : I love this guy and the episode was quite funny
-the one where they have to make a tour for overseas tourists : I love it because I watched this a week before my Seoul trip so it gave me ideas of things I could do and eat. Lots of funny moments and they grace us with Eric nam.
-The oldie where they have to reenact Boys Over Flower. This episode is super funny - if anything comes out good from BOF and Almost Paradise, it's this episode. (Oh fine, and Lee Min Ho).

The unfortunate letters is really funny. It's a few weeks ago, and I cannot remember the exact episode number, the members send letters to each other with "challenges" and those who received need to complete the challenges in 2016. After this epi you can follow up with the episode that Jung junha went for show me the money audition. It was one of the task from the letter he received. Lol

I always end up coming late to open threads, oh well.

Besides Signal, no drama has really captivated me during the last two cycles here. I loved the first half of One More Happy Ending but it ended up losing my interest. I hear Come Back Ahjussi and SFD are great, but don't have the motivation to weigh in on them yet. So I've mostly been rewatching things or picking up old dramas. One thing i have to thank OMHE for is introducing me to Jung Kyung-ho who I had somehow never seen before! Like a crazy fangirl, I went back and watched a bunch of his old projects ^^ Heartless City was amazing and heart wrenching, Falling for Innocence was cute but kinda strange, Smile You was adorable but I quit half way through while I (and the show) was still ahead, LOL.

Endless Love.... drove me insane. Anyone else seen this and can commiserate with me? I usually stay away from both weekend dramas and makjangs, but like I said crazy JKH bender. The first episode was pretty terrible in pacing and execution, but by the second episode the tense character relationships and epic historical setting had me hooked. Hooked good. I watched the whole stupid 37 episodes at the edge of my seat. Despite some massively frustrating characters, the acting was quite good and there were enough layers to the relationships to keep it addicting. Even the evil evil villians got some good backstory and development. Add to that a healthy dose of torture, political intrigue and a truly interesting and inspiring historical context and I just couldn't quit it. And ok, the crazy makjang plot twists accompanied by more birth secrets than I have EVER seen employed in one drama probably had something to do with it too. All well and good. The problem was the romantic development. They teased the main triangle with JKH and his two love interests ALL THE WAY UNTIL THE LAST 15 MINUTES of the drama. Well, the problem was they didn't even tease it really. All three characters had very strong feelings that remained the same through the whole drama, producing endless angst because all those feelings were one-sidedly pointed at the wrong person in an insoluble love hexagon of doom. Because it's ENDLESS LOVE don't you know, and no one in this drama was capable of loving more than one person in their entire lifetime. So their was no real romantic development between any of the pairings because no pairing could actually form. Until of course, the almighty time skip at the 11th hour, at which point the triangle was solved- by NOT SOLVING IT. Seriously, JKH ended up keeping pretty much the same relationship dynamic with both girls that he had through the whole drama, except now suddenly everyone was ok with it. UGH. I have never felt so cheated by a finale episode cop out in my life! ~*deep breath*~

So let's just say I learned something through this experience. I will never knowingly be manipulated by the makjang again! Do you hear me dramaland?! NEVER AGAIN!

Hi Pearl, your post /rant about Endless Love just cracked me up. There is something about makings that though you know you're getting frustrated and aggravated and yet one can't seem to tear one away from it, once hooked. So I tend to stay away as I've been known to throw things at the screen, and well... that can cause rifts in domestic bliss...
