Cheese in the Trap: Episode 10

So cute today. I mean, this show is always cute (with a side of crazies), but this episode had some really sweet character beats that made me giddy. It also had some triumphant moments for our heroine, who confronts her tormenters in a major way and doesn’t hold back or silently endure like she’s so used to doing. Grab some popcorn, because things are about to get entertainingly ugly.

Note: There’s a good chance that Cheese in the Trap will be pre-empted next week for the New Year holiday (Monday and Tuesday, February 8-9). It hasn’t been confirmed, but there’s talk of tvN possibly airing movies instead, so just a warning to be emotionally prepared for a week with no Cheese! Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out… *whimper*

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Seol keeps her distance from Jung, though she finds herself upset that he’s ignoring her too. But then she finds him waiting in the stairwell with a can of coffee, wanting to talk. When she turns it down, he just wraps his arms around her in a backhug and lingers there for a while, until he quietly slips the coffee in her pocket and walks away.

After class, Seol and Bora are shocked when Eun-taek says no to lunch with them, because they’ve never seen him not hungry. Sure enough, he’s chowing down on a burger without them… because he’s having lunch with Jung instead.

Jung says that once midterms are over, he’ll be at school even less frequently than before, and asks Eun-taek to keep an eye on Seol and let him know if anything happens. He admits that Seol doesn’t share that stuff with him, and he’s worried. I get the sentiment, but I dunno, shouldn’t you ask her?

Eun-taek agrees and says he’d wondered about whether or not to show Jung the video they took of Stalker Boy Young-gon harassing her the other day. Eun-taek shares the video and says that Young-gon was so bad last year that this time Seol wanted to collect evidence to turn over to the police, though he’s skeptical that it’ll do anything.

Jung asks for a copy of that and any future videos they get of Young-gon, saying that he’ll help find a solution. Um. Can we not give Jung fuel to do another scary thing he won’t be able to explain later?

When Jung heads back to campus, he sees Copycat Min-soo walking ahead of him, looking exactly like Seol from behind with her lion charm just openly dangling from her bag. She’s even muttering to herself like a crazy person, that she’s not the one who copied Seol, and that Seol was so mean not to accept her apology.

Jung clearly knows it’s Min-soo but runs up to her and slings an arm around her, feigning surprise when he sees that it’s not Seol. He points out the lion charm and calls it cute, and asks if she and her boyfriend each have one. Ohhh, I see what you’re doing there.

He says that their classmates have mentioned that she has a boyfriend, and she weakly replies that she does. Jung suddenly turns cold and reaches over to caress a lock of her hair as he says, “No matter how much you impersonate and struggle to try, you can’t become the same. Haven’t you already realized it too?” She stammers as she asks what he means, but he just says she’s not so dumb that she doesn’t understand, and walks away. Okay, he’s scary when he does that.

Min-soo is shocked at first and wonders if this is the same Jung sunbae she knows. But then she flashes back to him suggesting that she look at those past presentations for their group project, and wonders now if he set her up on purpose. Oh he definitely did. But then she makes the leap that this is all Seol’s doing, and that she’s even using her boyfriend to stick it to Min-soo. Great. Crazypants is now Angrypants.

At his internship, Jung’s supervisor praises the excellent job he did on the last presentation, and bestows a new project on him like it’s a special honor, when really he’s just foisting his own work onto the intern. Sigh, it’s all too familiar a routine for Jung, and he forces a smile.

Curiously, he gets a text from In-ha declaring that she’s dealing with Stalker Boy per their deal, and that he should anticipate the results. And then Seol’s little brother Joon says he’s visiting campus tomorrow and asks Jung to buy him lunch. That makes Jung think of Joon’s picture saved on Copycat Min-soo’s phone, and the wheels start turning…

The next day on campus, Min-soo stops in her tracks to see Seol sitting next to her dream boyfriend, all touchy and close. Of course, she has no idea that Seol is Joon’s sister, and sees their playful teasing as something else entirely.

Seol isn’t really keen on the idea of going to lunch with Jung, but Joon wants her to come because their friend Ah-young is coming too. Ah-young arrives with breakfast for the three of them, and Min-soo watches jealously as Seol wipes at Joon’s mouth with a napkin.

Min-soo quakes with rage and says aloud, “Hong Seol… everything I want, Hong Seol takes from me. What did I do that was so wrong?” Suddenly she remembers the lion charm and balls up her fist, squeezing it tightly. Uh-oh.

Min-soo purposefully bumps into Seol from behind and drops the lion to the ground, and then she stomps on it repeatedly before dragging it along underfoot. She finally kicks it back to Seol, who’s upset to see her lion so tattered up and abused. Bora gets angry and wants to confront Min-soo now, but Seol says they have a midterm to get through first.

Jung watches all of this quietly in the background, and then heads into class and sits near Min-soo. When the others mention that Min-soo has a boyfriend, Jung asks brightly if he’s good-looking, prompting everyone around them to ask to see a picture. Min-soo tries to brush past it, but Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young grabs her phone and shows them Joon’s picture. Jung pretends not to recognize that it’s Joon.

It puts Min-soo on edge, knowing that Seol is somehow connected to her faux boyfriend, and she ends up not being able to take her exam very well because she’s paranoid about how to keep from being found out. She walks out of class muttering that it’s all Seol’s fault that she failed her test. Of course it is.

Seol confronts Min-soo after class and says it’s one thing to have stolen her lion, but what does she mean to say by stomping on it? Min-soo only gets louder and more defiant, asking what’s so wrong about throwing away what’s hers.

They’ve drawn a crowd by now, and Stalker Boy’s girlfriend Da-young rolls her eyes and asks if they’re still going on about that damn doll. Just then, Joon and Ah-young arrive to have lunch with Jung, and Joon runs over to Seol to say hi. Muahaha. This is going to be good.

Da-young recognizes Joon from his picture and asks if this is Min-soo’s boyfriend, and immediately the thought that comes to Seol’s mind is, “Sunbae called Joon on purpose…?” Jung pretends not to know what everyone’s talking about when they say that Joon is the guy on Min-soo’s phone.

Meanwhile, Ah-young demands a straight answer from Joon about whether he has a girlfriend, clearly jealous. But Joon swears he has no such thing: “Who’s Man-soo?” Pfft, is it mean that I love this moment?

Joon announces in no uncertain terms that Ah-young is the girl he likes, and Da-young asks Min-soo to say something. Min-soo hangs her head and quietly ekes out that Joon just looks like her boyfriend is all, but Seol snatches the phone out of her hand and sees her brother’s face right there as her wallpaper.

Everyone gapes and Bora says her skin is crawling. Seol demands to know what Min-soo is doing with a photo of her brother, and asks how far she’s going to take this. Min-soo snatches her phone back and can feel everyone turning on her, and suddenly lashes out at Seol with an accusation that she knew all this and planned to publicly humiliate her.

Min-soo launches at her violently and grabs her collar, screaming like she’s the victim in all this and Seol is somehow relentlessly tormenting her. That’s enough to make Seol fight back and she pushes Min-soo to the ground, and in no time they’re wrestling each other on the floor. Most people try to stop them, though Stalker Boy is busy taking video of the fight, which Jung quietly steals and erases.

Joon finally manages to pull Seol off, and Min-soo is still playing the victim and acting like Seol won’t leave her alone. Seol screams right back that Min-soo is the one who needs to get away from her, not the other way around. When Seol lays out all the things she’s done, Min-soo finally caves and cries, “Everything I want, you have! Grades, friends, even a boyfriend!”

Seol: “I don’t know why you’re saying that, but grades, friends…” She pauses thinking of Jung but doesn’t mention the boyfriend part aloud, then continues, “There’s not a single thing I earned easily.” She says that Min-soo didn’t used to be like this, and asks why she changed.

Min-soo cries that she was nothing before and she’ll never go back to that. She flashes back to people in their department constantly asking who she is and not remembering her, like she was invisible. Seol asks, “Are you happier now? People will remember you as Liar Sohn Min-soo. Are you happier now?” Min-soo finally breaks down in sobs.

Afterwards, Seol asks Jung point-blank if he called Joon here, and he says he’s been patient and holding back, but he thinks it’s better this way. He knows how much Min-soo has been bothering her, and says that people who play the victim and want what others have will always end up that way—losing what they have in an attempt to gain what isn’t theirs.

Seol sighs and thinks to herself that Jung has been surrounded by people like this his whole life, when just one Min-soo is enough to make her this angry. Jung says he won’t rush her, and that if she can understand him and come a little closer, he can wait.

Seol asks, “So you just stand still and I go closer? Does that fix everything?” He says that he thought they were alike at first, but admits, “Now I know we’re just as different too.” He says he’s trying, to fix why she’s frustrated with him and why she can’t come close. He puts a bag of medicine in her hand for the wound on her face, and plays with her hair gently before pulling back. A tear escapes from Seol, but she doesn’t say a word as he walks away.

In-ho plays “Für Elise” for his teacher, who keeps making him play it over and over. He gets exasperated and asks how else he’s supposed to play it, and Teacher says it has no sincerity. He tells In-ho that his piano-playing used to have a core, and that what’s injured isn’t his hand, but his heart.

Teacher says that that’s what Professor Noh saw in him. In-ho balks at the mention of his former teacher, and gets angry to find out that his teacher told Professor Noh about his return. He grabs this things and storms out in a huff, only to deflate as soon as he gets to the hallway and hears another student playing “Danse Macabre.” It’s clearly what he wants to be playing instead.

In-ho catches up to Seol on her way off campus, and finds it weird that she’s being aloof and hiding her face under a hood. He yanks it back and gets all riled up at the scratch on her face (gah, why is he so cute lately?), and she tries to brush it aside like it’s nothing.

He demands to know who did this, asking if it was Stalker Boy, or In-ha. Lol, why is the list of usual suspects so long in your life? She just shoves the hood back on, and he asks if she plans to go home to her parents looking that way.

In-ho sits her down and buys ointment for her face, and when he sees her struggling to put it on by herself, he steps in and does it for her. He jokes that she’s turned into a fighter and asks, “Did you win?” Ha. He says if you fight you should at least win, and Seol sighs that there was no winning; it’s just complicated.

Seol says she’s been thinking about why Min-soo did all that, and she thinks that it’s a little like her being jealous of the girl who used to follow Jung everywhere—you don’t even really know why you’re envious, but you feel yourself trying to be more like her, and then feeling more desperate and pathetic when you’re not.

She says she’s only ever been angry at Min-soo, but never once tried to understand her, and wonders now if things would’ve gone this far if she had just accepted Min-soo as a friend.

Seol says it’s only after the fight that she can understand Min-soo a little, but Jung told her not to dwell on it. In-ho asks hesitantly if they made up, and Seol says no, but she’s begun to understand Jung a little more too. She realized that she only sees what she wants to see and hears what she wants to hear, and only saw him the way she wanted to.

In-ho stares at her for a long beat, contemplating what she said, and then quickly returns to his jokey self and tells Seol to think up an excuse to tell her parents before they get home.

The next day, Seol narrates that Min-soo never came back to school, and everyone supposed that she took the rest of the semester off. Everyone teases Seol and acts terrified of her, but Seol tells us in voiceover that the gossip died down eventually, and school continued on as normal.

In-ha makes herself some ramyun and pulls out one of In-ho’s piano books to put underneath the pot, and pauses when she sees the name Hong Seol all over the book. It’s one of Seol’s childhood piano books that she gave to In-ho, and In-ha cackles in glee because things just got interesting.

Seol doesn’t know how to answer a text from Jung asking if she’s doing well, and happens by Uncle’s bar as In-ho is playing “Für Elise.” She sneaks in and sits down next to him at the piano, and he blusters that he was just playing it for fun. She urges him to keep playing, marveling at how the same song can suddenly sound so different.

She calls his rendition very sad and full of longing, and guesses that songs take on a totally different feel depending on the player. That seems to spark something in In-ho, and he watches Seol play a few bars while calling out the notes when she struggles. She’s adorably proud, and he praises her with a smile.

He suddenly asks, “Should I go to school?” She says he’s already at school, but he means officially enroll as a student, after taking his high school equivalency exam, like she suggested last time.

Seol lights up and grabs In-ho’s hand in excitement, planning out how they’ll use Joon’s old books and they’ll plan a schedule so that she can help him study. She’s genuinely giddy, though In-ho can only focus on the hand that she’s touching.

He turns comically red-faced, his cheeks like two glowy balls of hormones as bright as a neon sign. His heart races and he just stares at Seol, and then his hand, and then back at her, in a daze.

She finally notices his radioactive cheeks and he tries to brush it aside, but when she reaches out to touch his face curiously, he jumps up. Aaaaaah. This is so cute. Seol is worried that he’s sick or something, and he’s so flummoxed that she basically chases him around the room until he finally comes up with the excuse that he has a cold and runs away. Hee. I have to watch that again.

They walk home and Seol worries about In-ho practicing so late if he’s sick, and asks if he’s taken any medicine. He just puts on a tough act and then wonders why she’s following him instead of going home, and she tells him she’s going to help close down the restaurant because he’ll be useless. They argue back and forth the whole way, each trying to get the other to go home.

In-ho’s eyes widen as soon as they step inside though, because In-ha is there waiting to pounce. She acts all innocent about wanting to see where her brother works, and then Mom happens by, and In-ha learns in one fell swoop that this is Jung’s girlfriend Seol and her parents’ restaurant.

In-ha asks threateningly if she’s really Jung’s girlfriend and not In-ho’s like she’d assumed, and Seol doesn’t back down. She answers, “Yes,” and suddenly In-ha turns sweet and friendly, insisting that their last phone call was a misunderstanding. In-ha says she’s just childhood friends with Jung and nothing more, and acts like she can’t wait to be friends with Seol.

In-ho knows better than to leave In-ha alone with Seol, and drags her away before she does anything else. Seol closes the door after them and takes a breath like a hurricane just passed through.

At home, In-ha confronts In-ho about being so close to Jung’s girlfriend, and asks if he’s doing it to get back at Jung. In-ho runs with that and says that’s what he’s doing, but In-ha can see right through his lies and knows he likes Seol. He insists he doesn’t, but that just convinces her more and she teases him with the piano book.

Seol begins tutoring In-ho at the library the next day, as promised. When she takes out junior-high level books to test him, he gets all huffy about it, though when she sets the clock and tells him to start, he struggles to answer the first question.

In-ho peeks over at her and puts a hand over his heart to see if it jumps again. It’s not racing like it was yesterday, and he decides with relief that it must’ve just been the cold. Hahaha.

Elsewhere in the library, Eun-taek and Bora see Stalker Boy Young-gon about to enter and give Seol the heads up. Seol gets to work shelving books and lets Young-gon come to her, knowing that Bora and Eun-taek are nearby filming the exchange.

Young-gon accuses her of two-timing Jung with In-ho, and somehow spins it around to accuse Seol of using him because he’s innocent and making a fool of him. He has so many screws loose, I don’t even know where to begin.

Seol struggles to stay patient for the sake of gathering evidence, but Young-gon starts throwing a violent tantrum around her, spilling books on the floor and demanding that she stop ignoring him. He makes such a ruckus that In-ho comes over, and of course he flips out and chases Young-gon again.

A chase ensues through the whole library, and Seol barely catches up to them in the lobby and pulls In-ho away before he can hit Young-gon. She points to Eun-taek and Bora who are filming the whole thing, and hits In-ho in exasperation for ruining yet another attempt to catch Stalker Boy in the act. So sweet and well-meaning, but so not helpful, Baek In-ho.

Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young sees the commotion and accuses him of coming to the library all the time to see Seol, but Young-gon swears that Seol is the one harassing him when he just happened to be looking for a book. She buys it, of course, because she already doesn’t like Seol.

Eun-taek sends the latest video to Jung, who looks far more concerned when he gets to the part in the video where In-ho shows up and chases after Stalker Boy. That’s twice now that In-ho has been around and saved the day.

On the subway ride home, In-ho asks what’s so important about getting evidence when the first thing they should do is make sure Young-gon never comes near her again (using his fists). Seol reminds him that Young-gon managed to get him fired last time and he won’t hesitate to press charges, and In-ho smiles to realize that she’s protecting him.

Another passenger squeezes into the empty seat next to In-ho, shoving him so close to Seol that their legs are touching, and suddenly his heart starts to race again. He jumps up in alarm to avoid more skinship.

He peers at Seol’s book about successfully landing a job and asks if she isn’t tired of always working so hard. She points out that he works a part-time job, plays piano, and is studying to get into college, which to her sounds like he’s working harder than she is. In-ho: “I don’t like working hard. I caught this from you!” It’s not a diease!

Seol mock-apologizes and then hands him a box of cold medicine (aww), insisting that this is her way of preventing herself from catching his cold. Yes, very selfish of you. How could he possibly not love you now?

Jung eats dinner with his father, who asks if everything is going well at the office. Dad asks if he’s getting along with his co-workers, and says he agreed to Jung keeping his identity a secret at the office, but wants to make sure that Jung isn’t doing anything that’ll cause issues down the line.

Jung gets really defensive and asks if Dad heard something from someone, and wonders why it always feels like he does everything that his father asks, only to have Dad see him as a problem child. Jung: “Am I that strange in your eyes? Does that make you nervous? Why?” He cuts dinner short and walks out, and glances at Seol’s picture as he drives home.

Someone calls Seol on her parents’ home phone late that night, and she’s alarmed when it’s Young-gon, with the creepy greeting that he always knows where she is and what she’s doing, and he wouldn’t have called home if she’d pick up her cell phone.

Young-gon: “Why do you make me like this? I thought about the library and I’ve decided to forgive you. I know you brought that gangster along just to show me. Is it because of Da-young noona? I told you I’d break up with her.” *skin crawl* Seol hangs up on him, but that just makes Young-gon think harder about how he’s going to cause a rift between Seol and Jung for good.

He decides that proving Jung as a two-timer is the best way, and texts In-ha the next day to ask her for proof that she’s Jung girlfriend. So In-ha sends him a picture of her and Jung sitting close together from a year ago, and then throws in a shot of her cleavage as a bonus, egging him on to send her pictures of him in return. Young-gon laps it up and spends the day just staring at her picture.

Meanwhile, In-ha sees sunbae Sang-chul harassing Nerdy nearby, and she chases him off. Sang-chul is such a mooch that he can’t even find someone to have coffee with at school, and even Young-gon starts to look down on him and think of him as a loser.

Seol gets fired from her library job over the ruckus that Young-gon caused yesterday, in particular because of student complaints about the incident online. The complaint must’ve come from Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young, because she watches Seol get fired with a satisfied smirk on her face.

Seol doesn’t have much of an appetite after that, Eun-taek and Bora try to cheer her up, not that it’s much help. Talk turns to future plans, and Bora says that her father’s going to open a shop for her, and Eun-taek says he’s going to become a model. Bora mocks him, and he challenges them: “How long do you think I’m going to be your underling?” Seol and Bora deadpan in unison: “Forever.” He doesn’t argue, and just puts side dishes on their plates like a dutiful minion.

Seol is dealt yet another blow when Young-gon texts her the picture of In-ha and Jung looking cuddly together. She’s so distracted that she barely registers In-ho arriving for his tutoring session, and he finally caves and tells her to get up so they can go home.

She’s still so in her head about the picture that In-ho has to prevent her from walking into lampposts, and it’s not until she looks up that she realizes that he’s walked her home. He insists that he’s going home, not walking her, but she points out that he lives in the opposite direction.

He just hands her the bag he’s been carrying all day and she opens it up to find a myriad of weapons, from mace, to a taser, to a retractable stick. Ha. They’re for use against Stalker Boy, obviously, and she thanks him.

In-ho asks what’s got her so lost in thought that she couldn’t even focus on studying, and when she says it’s nothing, he sighs that he thought she’d made progress with her brawling ways, but she’s back to holding everything in again. Seol says it’s not something that’ll be solved by talking about it, and heads home with a smile.

He watches her go and calls after her to open her eyes, and demonstrates by opening his eyes as wide as they go. She dutifully does the same, heh. In-ho watches her go and says to himself, “She can’t depend on me…” He decides that he wouldn’t depend on himself either, and lingers a while before turning around to walk home.

COMMENTS

Okay, I’m having to fight pretty hard not to be on In-ho’s ship. I know Seol likes Jung and only sees In-ho as a friend, but aaaaah, he’s being so cute and sweet and thoughtful, and they have such a wonderful easygoing rapport. Seol’s constant tension with Jung is so stressful sometimes that I find myself thinking how easy it would be if she were dating In-ho. That’s not really a reason to date a guy; it’s just hard not to compare them when the second lead is staring you in the face with those rosy cheeks. It was especially difficult not to think those thoughts when In-ho spent the entire episode doing all the right rom-com hero things, and struggling with his newfound feelings on top of it all.

I know that In-ho doesn’t always do things the best way either, but I was touched when he encouraged Seol to fight and be open about what’s bothering her instead of always enduring silently. I prefer his approach—encouraging her, arming her with weapons (lol)—compared to Jung’s method of stealth-fixing things for her, which always ends up backfiring on him when she discovers what he had to do to get there. Not to knock Jung’s approach completely though, considering that it was rather effective in dealing with Copycat Min-soo. She needed a public outing to stop her from being able to lie her way out of everything, and it’s one instance where I thought Jung managed to be helpful and not scary (or did Min-soo just overshadow him by being way creepier?). It doesn’t fix their problems, and maybe even confirms what Seol fears, but today I was so relieved at the outcome that I was grateful for Jung’s intervention. Because Seol should definitely fight her own battles, but when she’s up against crazies, a helping hand doesn’t hurt.

I still really worry that Jung doesn’t understand what’s wrong and will only continue to be this way though—trying to be good for Seol’s sake, but not really changing in the end. Was he showing restraint with Min-soo, or was this no different from him setting anyone else up for their demise? Is his cynicism just the result of a lifetime spent as the guy everyone wants something from, or is Dad’s worry about him something deep-seated and potentially disturbing? We’re beginning to see that this is a pattern with Jung—him trying his best to abide by a loved one’s rules, and hurt that they see him as strange no matter how well he abides. Maybe he can’t trust anyone because no one’s ever given him the benefit of the doubt, but hell, I don’t blame them for not being able to trust him fully, not when every flashback reveals another classmate’s comeuppance at his hand. Part of me thinks that if Seol broke things off cleanly, Jung might grow more and attempt to change before returning to her. Though the other part of me fears what might happen if she broke his heart entirely.

For now I’m content that In-ho did so much growing, thanks to Seol. He’s gone from a jobless, dreamless wanderer to a guy who’s willing to start at the bottom and work his way up for his dream, whether that’s playing elementary-level piano pieces or learning junior-high coursework. It’s an impressive turnaround, considering how prideful he was once, having to ask how a person works hard because he’d never had to work for anything before. I just especially love the way Seol inspires him to see music differently, and how she teaches him very naturally about the mood or feeling of a song changing depending on how it’s played. It seems obvious, but I can see how he might’ve been a prodigy who focused on technique and only ever learned to play a piece perfectly, without consideration for how he could interpret it and play sadly, or longingly. That’s the stuff that really gets me in the heart, though rosy cheeks are an adorable bonus.

Don't fight it gf! Let the winds blow your sails over to In Ho!

I really like Seol and Inho, not just as romantic interests (I still haven't given up) but as friends. From the start, they've encouraged each other and like you said, helped each other grow as people. Neither of them push each other to do anything but rather toss an idea out and support each other what ever each other's decision is. In Ho continues to surprise me with how perceptive he is and I think part of the reason why I've fallen for his character so much (and Seo Kang Joon---just a little...er, alot) is because there's this freaking beautiful, yes, BEAUTIFUL depth to him. We may have seen characters like him in many-a-drama but perhaps it's SKJ or the writing, or a combination of everything but it's simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming to see him try to hide his warmth and kindess underneath that brash exterior. It's even moreso because his attempts at hiding his feelings are sooo futile because he's utterly transparent.

And talk about In Ha! Remind me to never underestimate Cheese. She hasn't redeemed herself quite yet and I doubt that I will ever like her character (who knows though?) but when she stood up for Jaeho, it seemed like there's hope for her still. Although, it wasn't purely out of the goodness of her heart and more to save her food/money source. But still, I choose to see it as an act of kindness.

Another reason why I shouldn't underestimate the show is JUNG. Oh my gosh, Jung...I think I finally get you now. Okay, not entirely, but I think I'm starting to piece together who he is and why he's the person he is. I was beginning to question whether the show would be able to explain it, especially to me, a viewer who hasn't been seeing Jung in the best of lights, but dang it, they've done it. I can't imagine a life with people who only want to use you without it dramatically affecting the way you then start to see/treat people. It doesn't excuse his behavior like texting Young Gon but I'm starting to understand the mind underneath all those actions. It seems like he's willing to try and understand why Seol's so frustrated with him and his way of thinking and I'm rooting for his growth.

And you are starting to see it because Seol the ones head we are normally in is also starting to see it. For the first time she really put herself in Jung's shoes and wondered if Jung had to deal with the Minsoo's of the world all the time growing up and how that shapped him. Like she said, if she broke out on MinSeol after having to deal with it for a couple of days. Imagining doing it for a good portion of a life time. Then to top it off, you got a dad that won't even allow you to get mad least you tanish image and reputation. I would feel suffocated too and explode in all the world too.

I like how the drama is constructing and unfolding the story of what you first see is not everything and things change from different perspectives. There is so much more to see/learn where it concerns Jung. He's not a good guy or hero (he's the definition of anti-hero) and I like him because of this.

Exactly! Jung is definitely an antihero and I love him for it. The drama isn't justifying or excusing his actions, but it's subtly leading us into his psyche and what shaped Jung into who he is today. And then we as viewers get to decide if his actions prove understandable from HIS pov.

Haha, I oddly liked Inha this episode when my blood used to curdle at some of the stuff she does. This episode however, that scene with Jaeho was simply too good (yes she doesn't do it out of altruism but omg having that sunbae get his comeuppance was just TOO satisfying). Plus, she even clarified with Seol that she was just friends with Jung (clearly because he paid her to HAHA, but that also shows that they really were just friends). Yeah, not enough to redeem her, but at least this episode she was not as annoying, which worked to balance out how frustrated I was getting over Young Gon etc.

Lee Sung-kyung's been getting a lot of flak about the way she plays In-ha, but I actually rather admire her commitment to going all in, weird exaggerated expressions and all.

There's no vanity in her about all the weird faces she has to make, and I actually enjoy In-ha as comic relief. (and she can be SO much fun to watch when unleashed on the right people)

Lately InHa's really growing on me, not so much as I adore her, but enough to look forward to her crazies, esp if she's talking down crazies as well. Jung is good at throwing crazy out on crazy, I wonder who she's gonna wreck havoc next. Okay I'm definitely looking forward to her.

I'm in Korea right now and been watching Cheese in the Trap on tv every Monday and Tuesday. It is true that tvn will be airing movies for the holiday. They ran a broadcast of the movies that they will be airing and the time (9:40pm I believe) so maybe we won't be able to watch any new episodes next week. Crossing my finger that they will air it because this drama starts at 11pm (Korea's time).

Hmmm...most movies are usually about 2 hours long though, so if movies start airing at 9.40 pm, then they will end at 11.40 pm...and then maybe they might be airing lunar new year festive celebrations across the nation (not sure if Korea does that?).

I wish they wouldn't pre-empt, but I have not much hopes cos being familiar with this type of holiday programming, I'm pretty convinced they'll replace the usual dramas with the lunar new year programming.

When YooJung start asking Fauxseol about the lion doll, I'm like yaasss!! I see what you did there Yoojung sunbae & he showed her a glimpse of his scarier self, its thrilling~
Yes, I like my Yoojung all shady manipulative hot af, tq~
That fight is needed to end Fauxseol arc & now that Seol hanging around & understand Yoojung more, she clearly can see his shady work huh?
Seol, did you just get mad over a picture? I hope she realized that Yoojung probably feels the same with her & Beak Inho getting all friendly all the time. I'm not saying that Seol should stop befriending Baek Inho but at least understand Yoojung a bit more when it comes to that. Altho I wish my OTP is all over my screen I understand Seol when she said she cant come close.
And we need Chairman & Jung flashbacks, seriously. I want to say more but some said stop comparing with the webtoon a while ago but this flashbacks are important. That conversation between Chairman & Jung is so much more and I actually bummed I cant discussed it with y'all as if that some kind of insider info tbh. Dad, shush.

Yeah. I'm still seeing comments asking why Seol and Jung are even dating. They like each other, that's why! Is it for the healthiest or best of reasons? Idk, but they like each other. That's so clear by now.

Why does Seol have to have a bullet list of reasons why she likes Jung for this romance to be considered valid to some? I think even when they disliked each other they were attracted on some level. The fact that he recognizes and praises her efforts and hard work without being obligated to is a huge thing for her imo. Both of them have wanted validation from their parents and neither get it. That's enough to have a huge connection there.

Yeah...it's like people think emotions can be logical, and you can LOGIC your heart to like someone who would be more "suitable", erm...like, is that how real life works, people? I'm pretty sure they invented the term "falling in love" for a reason. I don't geddit.

and it's not even like we can't see a believable degree of attraction between them, because Park Hae-jin and Kim Go-eun have the chemistry to back it up. (boy, do they have chemistry!)

There are so many dramas where the lead couples have NOT looked or felt believable together, because the actors simply couldn't sell the connection between the characters, or the characters being together felt like a 'because I say so!' from the scriptwriter. This is not one of those dramas.

Whenever I read comments saying they don't see the chemistry/attraction between Jung and Seol, I have to stop myself. Like, you can debate alllllll you want about how healthy of a fictional couple they are or how *insert diagnosis here* Jung is or whatever. But don't say PHJ and KGE don't have chemistry!

And yes @Rainerust! Emotions are usually never logical, or they haven't been in my own life lol. And I've enjoyed watching a complicated, work-in-progress relationship between two very flawed people. I don't even think these two will be endgame! I just know if I disliked the established couple and Jung as much some seem to, I wouldn't even bother watching lol.

0

Yes, that cracklin' chemistry!! It's undeniable. I don't know if you guys saw the BTS of the backhug scene, where the PD teased Kim Go Eun that she was blushing when Hae Jin hugged her. Tho lol at the PD, she was even more red in the face than Kim Go Eun haha!

0

@Jeanie - believe it or not, I've actually never seen the BTS - I'm just going off what's there in the drama, which is pretty swoony in its own right. But now that you guys said it, I should probably look up bts footage too.

0

haha your comment, KK. Yes, they like each other indeed, for reasons that you stated, but I think they wouldn't accept that because some people just do not like Jung, and whatever reason Seol have for liking him would not be enough to satisfy why she is with him instead of with IH

I don't think I have as bigger heart as yours KK. We are in ep. 10 and not once Seol showed any affection more than friends towards In Ho. It would be to weird to pull it up in the next 6 eps. And yes, I do adore Seol, and wants her to be happy, but I also wants Jung to be happy. And I love their interactions, how they are working in relationships. Not all relationships are fireworks and butterflies, most relationships need work from both sides. And I see this from them, I am in love of the process, of two different personalities drawn to each other. Flawed, but slowly coming together, and all the hurdles make them stronger. puuhaaa!

0

Yup. Just a picture of Jung & Baek Inha spin her world around & enough to walk into a lamppost. While walking with Baek Inho. I think it is clear that Seol like Jung (more than she willing to admit, perhaps?) & Inho just a friend.

Not sure what will happen will Inho & Seol in later episode(s) since they did throw us that annoying love triangle but right now, Seol is thinking about Jung as much as Jung thinking about her~

i dreamt about this characters last night, rather this morning because i spent overnight waiting for this ep.

seol was transferred to a new section kind of like when she was moved to witch kang's class. then my scary professor was the prof of that class (she's really like witch kang, teaching style and all). but the class instead is full of underworld students and gangster alike they are underperformers. so seol was like in danger ryt, then later the better class professor arrived saying that some of his students pleaded to be transferred then Jung, Bora and Euntaek came in to join seol. #squadgoals then Jung hugs her with the face like that in the preview for 11. and saying "don't worry im here now, then he kisses her!"
then I wake up.
it's true!!! i hope i never forget that dream.

Oh man, I've stopped myself from commenting in any of the recaps but just once... I'm doing it just once.

I ship In-ho and Seol. SO HARD.

There. I said it lol. I never involve myself in petty shipping wars mostly I've also never shipped the second lead. 99.9% of second leads are cookie cutter characters that just bore the heck out of me. In-ho isn't though. And when he's with the piano and Seol by his side, laughing, having fun, enjoying themselves and just being the most natural things that fit perfectly in this drama-world... I almost want to shoot Yoo Jung out of existence.

Such a "headdesk" situation, as one of my good friend would say. Why did Seo Kang-joon pick this drama to be this ahhh-mazing? Why is Baek In-ho so swoony? Why am I rooting for the wrong guy??

There is no such thing as a Korean drama without a second lead. I am not a particular fan of Park Hae-jin. I have not read the complete webtoon.

I was going with the flow, expecting Seol and Jung to be the main couple. I was happy the PHJ finally had a lead role.

I now believe that this relationship needs OVER THE TOP explaining to work. I do not understand how he is hardworking. He is NOT hardworking. He is a SELF CENTERED jerk!! He is nothing like Seol!!! Every scene with them together is strained and uncomfortable to watch. Everything he CONTROLS falls flat. He always leaves a hurt trail when he TRIES being good or thoughtful. He has a cold perspective and lacks thoughtful consideration of how others feel. He is very icy and manipulative. I just cannot support him anymore!

I think Seol is conflicted about this relationship. She has landed a very rich, popular, smart, and good looking guy. This seems to be a goal for most dramaland girls However, everything about their relationship and interactions is tense and forced. She cannot even relax when they kiss. It makes me cringe. My opinion...

HOWEVER, In Ho is a friend. This is how relationships begin. Everything about them is casual and HONEST! I like how he bumps up against her when they are walking together and she does not mind. He then has this little grin on his face. She thinks about him so naturally. She KNEW he would find the piano at her uncle's restaurant. She seeks him out because of her easy going affection toward him. He is HARDWORKING! He is talented and smart. He has shadows, but does not pretend they don't exist. He is complex as well. We still have much to learn from and about him. I LOVE HIM!!

I began to feel there was a connection between them. I always knew he liked her. He took a job at her parents' restaurant and encouraged her brother to work harder. HE WANTED TO BE NEXT TO HER.

He is a loving brother. He sacrifices for his conniving sister. This shows how committed he is to relationships.

I have come to believe that there is just too much garbage and baggage with Jung. This kind of "complexity" is not entertaining or captivating for me. In fact, it is really sickening.

If Seol like In Ho in different light, then there's a ship that need to sail, but there's none of it even when there's an abundance time for In Ho and Seol for the last two eps.

...I'd like to say that Healer had intense discussions over plot, direction and writing too...but yeah, a lot of the crazy numbers on the comments page were squee-fuelled. Not that there's anything wrong with squeeing, haha. Healer was written to be dramatically sweeping, and it had an epic romance. This drama's romance is a lot more realistic, a lot more introspective, and a lot more analytical.

I guess I'm strange because I have no problems with anything Jung has done this far. All these little shits made their choices and have to deal with the outcomes (as he Jung is having to do now). These people were liars, thieves, chocking perverts, and rapist. Sometimes you got to be a bit cunning and manipulative when dealing with certain people.

As for the MinSeol set up, good. That girl was causing Seol so much misery. Jung simply wanted her lies called out in a public way that leaves room for no doubt if what Seol said and has been said. It all could have ended without violence if MinSeol had not attacked Seol. She was yet again being egged in and manipulated by Younggon and her own mind. I for one believe Jung when he's going to try and meet Seol half way but at the same Seol simply has to ask herself (like the audience has to also) if she can accept some aspects of Jung as is because there are parts of him that will never change. He may tamper it down and even learn to make better choices; however if the situation calls for it (aka dealing with the crazies) he'll be his manipulative and cunning self hand ropes to hang from and I for one don't want that aspect of him to change.

Also it seems Jung learned/imitated how to be from the world that surrounded and continues to surround him and that world was/is f-ed up. People lied to him, used him, took advantage, were inconsiderate, jealous, etc; in their interactions with him. Jung simply adapted and learned to/does the same. U can understand him. Why do these college classmates want/ expect him to be good, honest, helpful, supportive, etc with them. When they are not that way with him or each other. Isn't that being a pushover? I agree on his do onto others methods because all those he does onto were practically beginning for it. Also just because you are handed a gun doesn't mean you have to go but bullets and shoot.

Also we have seen that Junv can tamper it down and just go with the flow of doing what's done, etc. we saw it in how he allowed the office worker to take advantage of his talents (the man was pulling a San Chul) all to keep the peace at work/ his dad's image and not cause trouble. He was good yet his dad lectures and doubts/accuses. I'd your own father has no faith, trust, and support in you, how are you supposed to take and give that from the world?

Uhm, you don't have a problem with how Jung sicced a stalker onto Seol back when he disliked her (something he himself admits to and takes responsibility for)? Or how Seol has told him she doesn't like it when he hurts and manipulates others because of her, only for him to ignore it and just keep on doing it (and also roping Seol into his machinations without asking or warning her in advance)?

Jung is a fantastic character, and I agree that most of the people he acts against had it coming. But if he keeps on acting this way his relationship with Seol will end up similar to his relationship with his dad -- where there may be love, but no trust.

i think Jung definitely learns something in his relationship with Seol, perhaps because of the love. Maybe he now learns that, trust.

But I dont mind him keeping his manipulative and cunning self. He just had to make it smoother and calculating more result from it. Just in case if Seol feels some frustation towards him.

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't agree with him sticking a stalker on Seol but everyone one played a part in that situation and Younggon is unhinged and in need of professional help. It was not text messages or a nice gesture that got him stalking Seol (she's not the dust nor last he has done this to). Younggon stalking Seol is his own choice and mind to do so. While yes, Jung, Inha, and Seol were catalyst if you will, Younggon's actions and continue actions are his responsibility/blame.

The part about Seol not liking it and asking him to stop are things the two need to communicate and work on. I do have a problem with that, and believe he can learn to control that aspect of himself and change (to an extent). In real life Yoo Jung is not someone I would want to know if deal with. However in the world of this looney tunes university and the many psych patients, I find most if not all (sans Seol's situation) okay by me. I'm not trying to say Junv is right of a good guy (he's not) but I find that he is doing to the students what they do to one another each and everyday. However he's better and smarter at it and the hypocrites like to play the victim. Case in point TA Heo.

TA Heo likes to act like Jung doing his part in their gentlemdns agreement (Jung scratches his back by staying quiet about the department theft, and he does a favor or two for Jung) is what cost him is reputation. What? His reputation was shot the moment he decided to steal a student in the department he works for money out of their wallet at the department party. If Jung had said anything not only would his reputation in the department have gone up in flames, so would that of his around campus -gossip would spread like wildfire-, he would have lost his job -no department is going to keep on someone who steals for the departments students especially not one who does it at a department party which could cost the whole department it's name and standing-, and also possibly a criminal record. But off course TA Hei concur fly ignores all of this when he blabs to Seol and most likely left out his crimes in that confession.

Again Junv is not a good guy. But he's been a good boyfriend to Seol who still has a lot to work on/through. So yes I have no problem at him being better at the game everyone is playing. Though I agree there are things about himself he needs to change/improve on. But Seol also has to accept somethings will never change (it's who he is) and decide to stay or leave accordingly.

I truly don't believe that Jung sicced a stalker onto Seol. He saw that interaction between Seol and YG and may have actually believed that Seol "might" have liked YG. I def don't think he was aware of what extent INHAs role was in encouraging YG. You could see that in the previous episode when he finally read the texts and was upset and threw the phone into the sink. I also don't think he could have anticipated the crazy YG was. Who could have? Of course Jung does have his role, but he is not solely responsible for all this fiasco. YG is the deluded one. YG is the one who continues to pursue Seol. Who hasn't made offhanded responses before without really thinking/meaning them? Also in the previous year when Seol confronted him about what he said to YG, it is said immediately after that the stalking of YG stopped. So I believe Jung may have played a role in getting it to stop. When he owns up to his part in all this, it's only HIS actual text he sent, not the series of texts sent afterwards by inha.

Agreed. I mean it all was ultimately his fault but...his indifference and being passive by allowing In Ha in on it was the real issue here.

There was no malicious intent to have Seol stalked and terrified behind his own texts, either. I sadly do think it'd be easy to misinterpret Seol comforting YG (who had just harassed her best friends) as her possibly liking him. AND I HATE SAYING THAT, but honestly, I think a lot of people would come to that conclusion looking at it objectively, especially after what had just went down?

I'm glad Seol has learned the importance of self-preservation since then. Otherwise I'd be too stressed out as her moment of comforting YG had me yelling at my screen.

I know Lin pointed this out already but...I have to rant. I have a real issue with people saying Jung "sicced" a stalker onto Seol. Jung was in the wrong for sure, and he took the blame for his AND In Ha's part, but...Jung didn't MAKE or FORCE YG to stalk anyone.

I know some could argue it's a technicality, but it's a huge one because all that's being done when people blame Jung is validating Oh Young Gon's victim mentality. He's blamed Jung AND Seol for his actions and this is not okay, especially because YG has a lot more awareness of what he's doing than say, Min Soo (who was also still responsible for copying Seol to a creepy extent before YG used her).

While I was screaming for Seol to NOT comfort this dude bc I FIRMLY believe he'd end up targeting her without Jung's "I guess Seol likes you," that would have never been HER fault obviously. At all.

Oh Young Gon is the only person responsible for Oh Young Gon's actions. Sure, we can understand an unstable person being used by someone as a puppet (YG with Min Soo), but no one is telling him to stalk a girl now and look...he's still doing it. No one told him to harass Bo Ra before he stalked Seol and look...he did. Like yes, Jung did play his part, I get that and it needed to come out and be owned up to...but putting that all on him for me is basically saying YG has no agency and is not responsible for his downright disgusting and terrifying actions.

I know everyone ultimately blames YG, but I just don't like this mentality of, well, "Jung sicced a stalker on her," like YG is a mindless individual who couldn't say no. Because that's exactly what YG himself says...and he pointed out SC's own victim mentality...so he knows what he's doing.

couldn't said it better KK. I think the problem is that people already have prejudiced against Jung, so it is not easy to shake it off. I like his character, because he is really different than the usual male lead in Kdrama land. But, I don't get when people could not see the reason he is being like that and the people that he dealt with also not without faults, they all blame their own shitty behavior because Jung took advantage of it. But, it is still shitty behaviors. Stealing is a crime, getting money from someone who steals, even though it's for love does not make it right either. But, people just keep pushing the blame to Jung. They do not take responsibility of their own action. They are all grown ups, NYJ, SC, TA Heo, YS, MS, YG and that creepy supposed to be landlord's son that almost killed Seol, they are all bastards to some extent. Many would just prefer not taking action against them and be indifferent, and Jung took action to his own conduct. I do not see anything wrong with that. People seems to forget that the people that dealt with Jung is not some innocent bystanders.

There are two things imo that sets Jung apart from the other manipulators/schemers/users in this drama. 1) he's generally reactive (though has his exceptions like Seol for instance when they disliked each other), so he really only goes out of his way to do anything when you cross a line of his and 2) he is...slightly more skilled than all of them at playing this game.

It's backfiring with Seol (Jung is just sabotaging himself really when he manipulates now), but he has played the manipulation game better than all the others who've tried so I think it gives this...illusion that he's a bigger threat and harm than all these other characters, so because of his intellect (and his relationship with Seol) he's judged a bit differently, which makes sense. But he's not necessarily more dangerous or harmful or bad, because we've seen how much even SC and DY do to others out of pure selfishness. Jung is an extremely flawed character, but I mean for the most part he just gives people the rope and they hang themselves. He needs to learn how to vent and emote healthily and stop handing out ropes tho lol, but his ways do come in handy for the business world he's now in.

But yeah there's a double standard when it comes to Jung imo, but some can be valid points (as in, it would be in his best interest to stop manipulating people who wrong him and his own lol). I personally would like to see him change and grow to understand/empathize more, but I honestly don't see him changing much. His seems like a learned behavior that is now instinctual and unlearning any bad habit is a very difficult thing.

On the other hand, if he'd reformed all his manipulative ways during this break period of their relationship, it would seem put on and fake. So these subtle changes here and there while still failing to change immediately and completely could be a good sign for true growth later (I'll hope at least).

I would like him to experience all new range of emotions now that he found love, he would need to learn to share himself, as Seol too.I want them to learn about relationship and life together, but not necessarily change themselves completely. I love flawed Jung just the way he is, but he needs to change to be with other people, and right now Seol means much for him that he is trying. He is not there yet, I think it will take some time. I just hope they won't change him completely, like going through a total make over. Then, he would not be the complex, flawed beautiful Jung anymore.

Yeah. Except for poor Seol. So we know he does make mistakes. Also I think your underestimating what Jung will orchestrate for that slacker worker. Not that I'm minding too much. I must admit the way he treated Seol aside, I do enjoy Jung's brand of justice.

I'll be honest even though I love drama In Ho (where I was lukewarm for webtoon In Ho) I'm actually super glad this episode focused on him and Seol. Mainly because I couldn't hold out for two weeks if it'd been a Jung heavy episode. Loved Jung's manipulation but really need a Seol/Jung heart to heart to happen soon. I really need Jung to realise why he needs to change. Though I don't disagree with giving people enough rope to hang themselves either. I'm confused.

Oh In Ho, poor baby! So cute and adorable. I don't see it going well for him but I just want him to be happy. I want Jung to be happy. I want Seol to be happy.

In Ha actually made me laugh a bit this week which is a huge change!

Can I say yet again, Hong Seol is amazing and is actually now my favorite kdrama character.

Jung you are such a devil's advocate, you lead the door to destruction but its up to people to go in or not lol. But then again, he knows them enough that they will take the bait.

Sul only see Inho as family, like a brother. I dont know if the *SPOILER* drama would depict Sul to be aware of Inho's feelings or she is in the dark. Inho is such a good character progress in the series since he is working hard to be a better person. I would ship him too but... Lets be honest, Jung has the upperhand since Sul likes him.

Thanks for the recap, GF!

Really loved today's ep with all the cute moments. Just love Seol and Inho scenes. Heehee... I really love their friendship and how they care about each other. Inho is so sweet. So, I totally get what you mean about how easy it is to be on his ship and that Seol would have a less stressful time if she was dating Inho instead. Anyway, I just love how they influence each other positively and inspire the other person in some way--to strive to do better, to change, to grow, etc. I do hope Seol will keep standing up for herself and to open up to friends instead of keeping everything inside.

As for Jung, he's still got a ways to go to patch things up with Seol. But at least he is making the effort. It must have been really tough for him growing up in such a guarded environment and having to please the people around him. Not to mention, he had to constantly deal with people who took advantage of him or only approached him with an agenda in mind.

Younggon is just downright crazy and nothing can get through to him. Inha isn't much better and the two of them are just so annoying and frustrating to watch.

Minsoo had it coming and though I don't like how Jung tends to orchestrate everything, it was a relief to end this charade since it was getting so tiring to see Copycat Minsoo in every ep. getting progressively worse. I did appreciate Seol gaining insight on trying to understand others instead of just seeing or hearing things through one's lens. Anticipating the next ep!

thx so much for the recap!

foe me every episode of CITT is just so full of suspense and tension, but the good kind, that im already mourning the loss of no episode next monday. noooooooo! thx for the heads up!

in this episode, when seol got her face fixed by in ho and then started talking about the fight, i felt as if it was relating to in ho and his own situation as regards to playing the piano. when she talks of finally being able to understand creepy minsoo after fighting, relating that to in ho wanting to play the piano like he used to before, the way he now envied the other student on the piece he wanted to play so much....the scene felt like he understood what she was talking about.

i think being apart helps them grow closer, im wondering who is going to crack first though.

still mourning next mondaes loss, after that preview, argh!

Fur Elise is the boys life okay And Hong is a nuanced interpretation of a song everyone's heard a million times but to the boys it's different. She forces them to hear it differently.

Or you could say that each boy's interpretation of how to best help/love Hong is similar to how they were saying Fur Elise sounds different with each new player.
I feel like the reason I love this show so much is because it realistically shows how easily someone can force you to grow. Friend or foe. It's a lesson I've been trying to learn as a new 20 something.

or maybe I'm reading too much into it. It is 3 am here....

Finally, Min Soo's fall and Seol deciding she's had enough and started fighting for herself. I appreciate that her friends understand that she needed this to let things out. Everything had to be let out in the open to not leave any questions about Min Soo's craziness. That was enjoyable to watch. Sorry, but I'm one of those grateful to Jung for helping set things up. After that, it was all them. Min Soo erupted and Seol chose to fight back. I liked the part where Jung talked about people with victim mentalities. I wonder if he thought the same of the Baek siblings.

I was thrilled with the fact that Seol, together with Bo Ra and Eun Taek, have taken matters into their own hands with regards to Young Gon. Slowly collecting data to be used against the creeper. Watching this unfold, I wondered if this was what happened with Jung before? After being surrounded by all these crazies, did he eventually reach a decision that he's had enough and then started scheming against them? Of course with Jung, everything had to be handled discreetly as to maintain his name and position in society. Looking forward to more revelations about his past.

Like a lot of posters here, I really enjoyed the growth that In Ho has shown. He has started to mull things over, about his life, about his future. And Seol & her family, have been a great help to him. In the park where Seol talked about beginning to understand Jung, I wonder if In Ho have started to see things from Jung's perspective as well? I hope they slowly work at reconciling. I want to see this happen badly.

As for the matter of Seol & In Ho, I only see it as one-sided. It was rather cute to watch In Ho suffer feels for her but sadly, I don't think she sees him that way and I doubt if it'll change anytime soon? It's just different when Seol is with Jung, she gets all googly eyes and giggly and spazzy lol. I feel that the JungSeol break is much needed. They need time to think about and assess things and also to understand where the other is coming from. I love that the both of them are trying to work things out and that Jung is respecting her wishes.

In Ha was very interesting this episode. I would really want more flashbacks also about her past. Has something happened to make her this extreme? And Jung seems to have been tolerating her since they were kids. Does he do so because he understands her? I mean this is a girl who was orphaned, beaten by her aunt, ridiculed often by her brother and was spoiled by Jung's dad. Would she have been different in a more nurturing environment? Aww and she was sweet to Nerdy boy! Lol also at her scandalized by YG's abs haha! We reacted the same way, haha.

I really enjoyed this episode. My only gripe is that they took out the webtoon scene of Jung tending to Seol's wounds after the girlfight and instead made In Ho do it. Maybe the writers wanted to push forth the love triangle and maybe also to make In Ho hear Seol's musings regarding Jung? He seemed...

Nah, I think it's forced. In Ho's burgeoning crush was cute but I felt a more subtle approach would have been better after re-watching the episode?

@Petra and KK

Yep, I still think it's a straight line for now, LOL. Unlike in other kdrama love triangles, by this time, the lead girl would be confused with her feelings already and is starting to see the 2nd lead in another light, as a possibility. However in CitT, you see none of that. Seol seems to treat In Ho as a buddy/brother whom she wants to help improve in life. And basing on recent previews, I don't think she'll start to waver even then.

I second all comments above - it's totally forced and I sort of wish the drama didn't go there because there was already sufficient tension and problems to go through without needing that additional layer of pain for Inho. I seriously feel a bit upset for Inho actually cos arghhhhhhh why put him through pain Show why?! He could remain perfectly oblivious to his feelings and everyone could just be friends and it would be perfect and nice!!

...but then we might not have a drama. Sigh. Choices.

Just when i thought In-ha is at least knowledgable on one subject during the scene where she recognised the artist from Jae-woo's text book she turns that around on its head by saying it's the only artist she knows ??? bahahaha. Also, is anyone else bothered by the father's inferiority complex? It's quite evident when he's annoyed to have resorted to his wife's idea of opening a restaurant after his business fails, and this episode's interaction with his wife and the ringing telephone. It's obvious too he has old fashioned values, in that Seol's family treasure males more than females (ie: alluding to the preview of the family wanting Seol to give way to Joon). Eugh i absolutely dislike her father ?

Im just here for the characters now, tbh.

When Seol confronted Jung after the fight, I thought he said that he did that because SHE was holding it in for too long, meaning that he was giving HER the opportunity to deal with it and let it all out? Were the subtitles wrong? I thought that was the ultimate sweet thing to do for your girlfriend. And it showed signs of growth. Rather than handle it, he was letting her handle it.

Why do I feel like this episode is a let down?? I mean, rosy cheeked In ho was such a bliss but my heart still pouts for Seol and Jung's unsettled rift. I always kept thinking of the bed kiss scene all through out the episode hoping it'll happen (but like duh, I know it won't but still). I admit that Jung is really creepy in how he handle things esp with his relationship with Seol but isn't it what this drama is about?? A dark sided hero turning into the light with the help of a great heroin. My heart is really fixated with that idea that made me root for Jun-Seol. Buttt rosy cheeked In ho is giving me second thoughts. Ughhh I have so many unsettling feelings!!!! I need the next episode. gaaaahhhhhh and it's not suppose to air?? Ok, so I'll probably hide in my closet for the next 2 weeks.

GirlFriday, thanks for the recap.

I wish there were more episodes, will they have enough time to sort out all the issues of our characters? Adopt the AM1988 2 hour episode method, ( I'm going to miss this show).

I like Seol and In-ho's friendship, they both seem to open up to each other relatively easily and help one another. I liked it when In-ho chided Seol about how she was having a relapse to her old ways.
In-ho has to be in for a heartbreak though as Seol hasn't for a second shown one iota of anything other than friendship. I would think that a guy as pretty (?) and outgoing as In-ho would have attracted some girls, no?

I liked how Seol reflects on her own actions, something that so many others in this drama need to do.

In-ha, lol, she was relatively sane this episode, her chasing off Slugboy Senior from her geek was funny. Her cloyingly sweet reaction to discover Seol was Jung's girl, eek! For a moment it looked as though Seol thought, " Am I going to have to fight this crazy girl too?" Her sexting her cleavage to Stalker boy, omg.

Jung stroking Fake Seol's hair, an omen of impending doom to Fake Seol.

"Seol says she’s been thinking about why Min-soo did all that, and she thinks that it’s a little like her being jealous of the girl who used to follow Jung everywhere—you don’t even really know why you’re envious, but you feel yourself trying to be more like her, and then feeling more desperate and pathetic when you’re not."

- It was her little brother she mentioned being jealous of, not the girl that followed Jung around. She mentioned in a previous episode that she used to be jealous of him for being cheeky and lovable with their parents and being able to get away with anything. It seems like it might be important to the show, probably the next episode if the preview is anything to go by. Thanks for the recap. x x

I actually understand how Jung became the way he is. And most of the time, his heart is in the right place. He uses his intelligence to try to 'right' the wrongs around him. However, I think it becomes problematic when he thinks of himself as someone superior and starts deciding what is right. It almost seems like he no longer able to empathise with others normally. I.e. the whole incident with TA Heo. He couldn't understand how his actions are affecting TA Heo, and thought that TA Heo is simply getting what he deserved. Plus, when he was being mean to Seol a year ago, technically Seol did not exactly do anything wrong. He was simply annoyed, and hence decided that Seol deserved to be treated that way.

I'm also on the Jung-Seol ship. I really cannot see Seol and InHo anymore than just really good friends. It will make me so happy to see Jung, Seol and InHo (maybe InHa?) hanging out together happily. Jung really needs Seol. InHo doesn't. Not that much. I appreciate that Seol is helping him grow. But i think this amount is good enough. He is mature enough to take it from there. I'm not saying that that is a good enough reason for a relationship. But I will really hate to see how broken Jung'll become if Seol left him as well.

This:

"Jung really needs Seol. InHo doesn’t. "

I see this very clearly. Jung really needs Seol in a way In Ho does not. In Ho benefits from having her friendship and an example of how hard work would clearly pay off in his life. But Jung needs Seol emotionally in a way In Ho does not. Let's say, Jung's life would be pulled apart if Seol isn't in it.

Thank you GF!

I believe we can call this episode the 'Victim Mentality' episode. That idea of characters blaming others for their misfortunes was rife throughout. I was amused that even crazy Young Gon calls Sang Chul out on it, as one who ought to stop blaming others or skimming off them.

The other scene that amused me greatly was the virtual meeting of the two crazies, the terribly devious In Ha and dangerous Young Gon. What will happen when these 2 meet up face to face? Will they prefer each other to their current victims and entertain themselves with each other, or will they wreak even more havoc as an extremely unhinged duo? I feel the latter is more likely actually... unfortunately!

And like most of us here, I find that In Ho has become so much more lovable and so much less bratty. His growth arc is just the best. It's a pity he's stuck with that sister, but because of her, he's shown himself to be a much better man than he had ever appeared to be.

Something else I wrote elsewhere...

"It's amazing how so many characters' thinking is so warped and how they place store by the wrong words from the wrong people, constantly. (I'm thinking of Da Young and of course Min Soo). The theme of not judging because we do not really know what we think we know still comes up.

Also of not just judging people and treating them according to how we label them, but of getting to know them better, and how this might make all the difference in the dynamics of the relationships.

That was the case with Seol and In Ho. If she had never got to know him after his bratty pushiness in the beginning, they'd never have influenced each other to have grown as much as they have.

The way these two help each other develop is what I'd like to see for Seol and Jung as well, but that will probably take heaps more time, while Jung tries to figure out where he went wrong or even that he did do wrong. :)

"I was amused that even crazy Young Gon calls Sang Chul out on it, as one who ought to stop blaming others or skimming off them."

I found this to be one of the highlights of this episode. It was so hilarious that Sang Chul got called out by Young Gon for sponging off people and then blaming everyone but himself for his misfortunes.

I'm beginning to be a little tired. Writer-nim, can't you be less biased?
Writer-nim you made Jung a lot more dark and manipulative, less innocent than the drama. OK, it's interesting.
But now you make InHo so more cute, gentle, and happy. Hum...

The thing I love about this webtoon is that nothing is all black and all white. IT'S GREY. But here, you're painting Jung in Black, and Inho in White.
Same for Inha : all black.

I don't know. I love the character of Inho so much in the webtoon, that I'm beginning to be a little angry at this version of a fluffy and cute boy, even though in the webtoon he's more like a car without brakes.

Please, Writer-nim, I'm a little tired of your Inho character.

I was listening to the song 'Brave' by Sara Bareilles today, and I think the words of this song are so fitting for Seoul's situation at this point and what I wanted for her.

"You can be ... the backlash for somebody's lack of love,
Or, you can start speaking up...
Don't run, and stop holding your tongue...
And since your history of silence won't do you any good...
Why don't you tell them the truth...?
Say what you wanna say, and let the words fall out...
I wanna see you be brave...
(Hope that wasn't oversharing. But it was just SO FITTING!)

I'm kind of amazed at how easily Jung understands Seoul's needs in this episode. I think like some people have commented before that we overestimate his people-reading abilities, but I feel like with Seoul he got her so well in this whole Min Soo debacle. And he just stood there all calm and let her handle the situation after he gave it all those nudges and small touches. The whole time I think even though his face was stoic, he was just so proud of her, and like YES. And then afterwards when she confronted him to calmly admit that yes, I did it. And you feel better now don't you?

Jung's methods are the direct result of his upbringing. Jung is as much a product of his experiences as Seoul is. Seoul is hardworking and a pushover because she felt like that would get her the love her brother had always received so easily. Jung is sneaky when defending himself because he was taught that he must never openly be angry and must always be nice. So honestly all his actions have been completely logical (with the exception of his initial dislike for Seoul - I still don't get that).

I think I'm going to be hanging around her a lot in the coming weeks if there's really no episode next week. I was even turning into a good student and doing my homework that's due next Monday night this week just so that I could watch the episode of Cheese at least three times! Lol. (True story: first watch is to gobble up what was in the previews; second watch is to analyze everyone's actions and words and try to guess intentions and motivations; third watch is just because this show is awesome. It hasn't once made me cringe when I re-watch it, which happens a lot with dramas in my experience).

"So honestly all his actions have been completely logical (with the exception of his initial dislike for Seoul – I still don’t get that)."

Jung has a superiority complex regardless of how he was picked on or sucked up to growing up. His superiority complex makes him look down on people. I can't blame him for being that way because it seems he was exposed to the worst of human nature for most of his life but not allowed to react to that exposure in a normal way. With is father's constant preaching at him to behave like a cardboard box, not to react.

Seol is the one person who saw through him instantly, saw who and what he was really like so he instantly disliked her because he interpreted that as her looking down on him. Coupled with the fact that she always walked away whenever she saw him and called him out on some infractions she attributed to him, this definitely pricked his ego.

Required fields are marked *

@mylo and Adal, I think both your points are valid. Especially that bit about his father, I never thought of that. But the things that still remains unexplained to me is that Jung always says the he thought she was 'like everyone else.' From what we've been shown, everyone else uses Jung while pretending to like him, and they also suck up to him somewhat. Everyone thinks he's nice.

However, Seoul never did any of that. In fact, she openly disliked him, and she always avoided him. So I like the theories you brought up, and they make sense except for this small chink. Or maybe I'm thinking too much. I really hope that this is one of the things that gets explained. It just bother me so much.

This drama has me reeling week to week. There's just so many lovely, creepy, weird sh*t going on every episode that I'm left wondering....what the hell is next?? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this drama AS IS. There's enough intrigue, evil, mystery and romance to keep me coming back for more. I don't know how I'll make it through the next 2 weeks. waaaaaa!!!

Anyway, for all those that ship Seol & InHo, for the first time, I get it. I had no inclination to ride their ship..I always saw InHo as a brother figure. But this episode softened me up a bit. The kid has depth...he's got courage and is so sincere towards Seol, that I can't help but feel compassion for him. There's also a sense of sadness as I know Seol is meant for Jung and vice versa (which by the way is the SHIP that I PREFER..these two will be the death of me, but I hope that before death, I see them adjusting to each others idiosyncrasies and finally be able to love each other in peace). My wish though is that InHo doesn't hurt too too much. :-)

By the way...what happened to Jung's & Seol's "kissing on the bed scene" from last week's preview? I was expecting to see it in this epi. Felt a little jipped after...hahahaa

Besides, she has a great support system...Jung, In Ho her bestfriend & her boyfriend (sorry their names escape me). They've managed to get rid of Min Soo..so that's 1 down and 1, 2 or 3 more to go???

Perhaps once all the disruptions are done away with, we can finally enjoy the romance.

Talk about craziness of all crazy. In HA is crazy. i think she is worst than Yoo Jung.

Yoo Jung, is not bad but misunderstood. He has his faults, especially not explaining himself but his not bad crazy person. Lol.

I am totally team Yoo Jung.

I'm thinking In Ha is the one with the bigger personality disorder than Jung, or maybe she's certifiable. She has a 'entitled' complex or something... thinks everyone owes her and she's not grateful for anything she gets. In that way, Sang Chul is not too different. Pity they met each other but did not get on. I'd have liked to see them trying to get the better of the other and see who loses.

In Ha's character unfortunately hasn't been fleshed out enough for us to know if she ever had any reactions or wants other than wanting to torment others and seek her own comfort.

Perhaps she was less crazy when she had her art and a dream. Sang Chul by comparison just seems like a parasite, but not as scheming or devious as In Ha.

Ugh YES! This girl...I kept asking, "Why is she dating such a creepy stalker who's a total loser?" but then seeing how she's acted since the beginning, idk why I'm surprised.

While Min Soo and YG are the ones who obviously need to be off campus for the safety of others, Da Young and Sang Chul are easily the most annoying characters. EVERYONE has known a DY or SC and how much of a pain they are.

Sadly I agree that everyone has known a DY or SC which does actually make them the most relatable annoying characters. DY isn't as creepy as Minsoo (thank goodness) but i think her behaviour is really an indication of how self-centred people can be, and how possibly insensitive people are to context and relationships.

Seriously. She took over the role of Alpha B*tch after Jooyeon got shipped on a bus.

I'd like to see her shipped away to. Grrr.

Haha! Who knows, maybe if she keeps torturing Seol, Jung might also plan something for her LOL.

I think CHEESE is just as much of a story of Soel as it is of Jung. Just like she can't read Jung we as viewers can't either so basically we are viewing him in her point of view since we are also hearing her thoughts as well. So we are see Jung through the eyes of Soel. Soel is lucky bc I think she always wanted the protection and acknowledgment from a big brother that she never had in her family and that's where Inho will fall into - literally as her Oppa. And Jung will always be HER sunbae her BF sunbae
