Cheese in the Trap: Episode 10

So cute today. I mean, this show is always cute (with a side of crazies), but this episode had some really sweet character beats that made me giddy. It also had some triumphant moments for our heroine, who confronts her tormenters in a major way and doesn’t hold back or silently endure like she’s so used to doing. Grab some popcorn, because things are about to get entertainingly ugly.

Note: There’s a good chance that Cheese in the Trap will be pre-empted next week for the New Year holiday (Monday and Tuesday, February 8-9). It hasn’t been confirmed, but there’s talk of tvN possibly airing movies instead, so just a warning to be emotionally prepared for a week with no Cheese! Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out… *whimper*

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Seol keeps her distance from Jung, though she finds herself upset that he’s ignoring her too. But then she finds him waiting in the stairwell with a can of coffee, wanting to talk. When she turns it down, he just wraps his arms around her in a backhug and lingers there for a while, until he quietly slips the coffee in her pocket and walks away.

After class, Seol and Bora are shocked when Eun-taek says no to lunch with them, because they’ve never seen him not hungry. Sure enough, he’s chowing down on a burger without them… because he’s having lunch with Jung instead.

Jung says that once midterms are over, he’ll be at school even less frequently than before, and asks Eun-taek to keep an eye on Seol and let him know if anything happens. He admits that Seol doesn’t share that stuff with him, and he’s worried. I get the sentiment, but I dunno, shouldn’t you ask her?

Eun-taek agrees and says he’d wondered about whether or not to show Jung the video they took of Stalker Boy Young-gon harassing her the other day. Eun-taek shares the video and says that Young-gon was so bad last year that this time Seol wanted to collect evidence to turn over to the police, though he’s skeptical that it’ll do anything.

Jung asks for a copy of that and any future videos they get of Young-gon, saying that he’ll help find a solution. Um. Can we not give Jung fuel to do another scary thing he won’t be able to explain later?

When Jung heads back to campus, he sees Copycat Min-soo walking ahead of him, looking exactly like Seol from behind with her lion charm just openly dangling from her bag. She’s even muttering to herself like a crazy person, that she’s not the one who copied Seol, and that Seol was so mean not to accept her apology.

Jung clearly knows it’s Min-soo but runs up to her and slings an arm around her, feigning surprise when he sees that it’s not Seol. He points out the lion charm and calls it cute, and asks if she and her boyfriend each have one. Ohhh, I see what you’re doing there.

He says that their classmates have mentioned that she has a boyfriend, and she weakly replies that she does. Jung suddenly turns cold and reaches over to caress a lock of her hair as he says, “No matter how much you impersonate and struggle to try, you can’t become the same. Haven’t you already realized it too?” She stammers as she asks what he means, but he just says she’s not so dumb that she doesn’t understand, and walks away. Okay, he’s scary when he does that.

Min-soo is shocked at first and wonders if this is the same Jung sunbae she knows. But then she flashes back to him suggesting that she look at those past presentations for their group project, and wonders now if he set her up on purpose. Oh he definitely did. But then she makes the leap that this is all Seol’s doing, and that she’s even using her boyfriend to stick it to Min-soo. Great. Crazypants is now Angrypants.

At his internship, Jung’s supervisor praises the excellent job he did on the last presentation, and bestows a new project on him like it’s a special honor, when really he’s just foisting his own work onto the intern. Sigh, it’s all too familiar a routine for Jung, and he forces a smile.

Curiously, he gets a text from In-ha declaring that she’s dealing with Stalker Boy per their deal, and that he should anticipate the results. And then Seol’s little brother Joon says he’s visiting campus tomorrow and asks Jung to buy him lunch. That makes Jung think of Joon’s picture saved on Copycat Min-soo’s phone, and the wheels start turning…

The next day on campus, Min-soo stops in her tracks to see Seol sitting next to her dream boyfriend, all touchy and close. Of course, she has no idea that Seol is Joon’s sister, and sees their playful teasing as something else entirely.

Seol isn’t really keen on the idea of going to lunch with Jung, but Joon wants her to come because their friend Ah-young is coming too. Ah-young arrives with breakfast for the three of them, and Min-soo watches jealously as Seol wipes at Joon’s mouth with a napkin.

Min-soo quakes with rage and says aloud, “Hong Seol… everything I want, Hong Seol takes from me. What did I do that was so wrong?” Suddenly she remembers the lion charm and balls up her fist, squeezing it tightly. Uh-oh.

Min-soo purposefully bumps into Seol from behind and drops the lion to the ground, and then she stomps on it repeatedly before dragging it along underfoot. She finally kicks it back to Seol, who’s upset to see her lion so tattered up and abused. Bora gets angry and wants to confront Min-soo now, but Seol says they have a midterm to get through first.

Jung watches all of this quietly in the background, and then heads into class and sits near Min-soo. When the others mention that Min-soo has a boyfriend, Jung asks brightly if he’s good-looking, prompting everyone around them to ask to see a picture. Min-soo tries to brush past it, but Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young grabs her phone and shows them Joon’s picture. Jung pretends not to recognize that it’s Joon.

It puts Min-soo on edge, knowing that Seol is somehow connected to her faux boyfriend, and she ends up not being able to take her exam very well because she’s paranoid about how to keep from being found out. She walks out of class muttering that it’s all Seol’s fault that she failed her test. Of course it is.

Seol confronts Min-soo after class and says it’s one thing to have stolen her lion, but what does she mean to say by stomping on it? Min-soo only gets louder and more defiant, asking what’s so wrong about throwing away what’s hers.

They’ve drawn a crowd by now, and Stalker Boy’s girlfriend Da-young rolls her eyes and asks if they’re still going on about that damn doll. Just then, Joon and Ah-young arrive to have lunch with Jung, and Joon runs over to Seol to say hi. Muahaha. This is going to be good.

Da-young recognizes Joon from his picture and asks if this is Min-soo’s boyfriend, and immediately the thought that comes to Seol’s mind is, “Sunbae called Joon on purpose…?” Jung pretends not to know what everyone’s talking about when they say that Joon is the guy on Min-soo’s phone.

Meanwhile, Ah-young demands a straight answer from Joon about whether he has a girlfriend, clearly jealous. But Joon swears he has no such thing: “Who’s Man-soo?” Pfft, is it mean that I love this moment?

Joon announces in no uncertain terms that Ah-young is the girl he likes, and Da-young asks Min-soo to say something. Min-soo hangs her head and quietly ekes out that Joon just looks like her boyfriend is all, but Seol snatches the phone out of her hand and sees her brother’s face right there as her wallpaper.

Everyone gapes and Bora says her skin is crawling. Seol demands to know what Min-soo is doing with a photo of her brother, and asks how far she’s going to take this. Min-soo snatches her phone back and can feel everyone turning on her, and suddenly lashes out at Seol with an accusation that she knew all this and planned to publicly humiliate her.

Min-soo launches at her violently and grabs her collar, screaming like she’s the victim in all this and Seol is somehow relentlessly tormenting her. That’s enough to make Seol fight back and she pushes Min-soo to the ground, and in no time they’re wrestling each other on the floor. Most people try to stop them, though Stalker Boy is busy taking video of the fight, which Jung quietly steals and erases.

Joon finally manages to pull Seol off, and Min-soo is still playing the victim and acting like Seol won’t leave her alone. Seol screams right back that Min-soo is the one who needs to get away from her, not the other way around. When Seol lays out all the things she’s done, Min-soo finally caves and cries, “Everything I want, you have! Grades, friends, even a boyfriend!”

Seol: “I don’t know why you’re saying that, but grades, friends…” She pauses thinking of Jung but doesn’t mention the boyfriend part aloud, then continues, “There’s not a single thing I earned easily.” She says that Min-soo didn’t used to be like this, and asks why she changed.

Min-soo cries that she was nothing before and she’ll never go back to that. She flashes back to people in their department constantly asking who she is and not remembering her, like she was invisible. Seol asks, “Are you happier now? People will remember you as Liar Sohn Min-soo. Are you happier now?” Min-soo finally breaks down in sobs.

Afterwards, Seol asks Jung point-blank if he called Joon here, and he says he’s been patient and holding back, but he thinks it’s better this way. He knows how much Min-soo has been bothering her, and says that people who play the victim and want what others have will always end up that way—losing what they have in an attempt to gain what isn’t theirs.

Seol sighs and thinks to herself that Jung has been surrounded by people like this his whole life, when just one Min-soo is enough to make her this angry. Jung says he won’t rush her, and that if she can understand him and come a little closer, he can wait.

Seol asks, “So you just stand still and I go closer? Does that fix everything?” He says that he thought they were alike at first, but admits, “Now I know we’re just as different too.” He says he’s trying, to fix why she’s frustrated with him and why she can’t come close. He puts a bag of medicine in her hand for the wound on her face, and plays with her hair gently before pulling back. A tear escapes from Seol, but she doesn’t say a word as he walks away.

In-ho plays “Für Elise” for his teacher, who keeps making him play it over and over. He gets exasperated and asks how else he’s supposed to play it, and Teacher says it has no sincerity. He tells In-ho that his piano-playing used to have a core, and that what’s injured isn’t his hand, but his heart.

Teacher says that that’s what Professor Noh saw in him. In-ho balks at the mention of his former teacher, and gets angry to find out that his teacher told Professor Noh about his return. He grabs this things and storms out in a huff, only to deflate as soon as he gets to the hallway and hears another student playing “Danse Macabre.” It’s clearly what he wants to be playing instead.

In-ho catches up to Seol on her way off campus, and finds it weird that she’s being aloof and hiding her face under a hood. He yanks it back and gets all riled up at the scratch on her face (gah, why is he so cute lately?), and she tries to brush it aside like it’s nothing.

He demands to know who did this, asking if it was Stalker Boy, or In-ha. Lol, why is the list of usual suspects so long in your life? She just shoves the hood back on, and he asks if she plans to go home to her parents looking that way.

In-ho sits her down and buys ointment for her face, and when he sees her struggling to put it on by herself, he steps in and does it for her. He jokes that she’s turned into a fighter and asks, “Did you win?” Ha. He says if you fight you should at least win, and Seol sighs that there was no winning; it’s just complicated.

Seol says she’s been thinking about why Min-soo did all that, and she thinks that it’s a little like her being jealous of the girl who used to follow Jung everywhere—you don’t even really know why you’re envious, but you feel yourself trying to be more like her, and then feeling more desperate and pathetic when you’re not.

She says she’s only ever been angry at Min-soo, but never once tried to understand her, and wonders now if things would’ve gone this far if she had just accepted Min-soo as a friend.

Seol says it’s only after the fight that she can understand Min-soo a little, but Jung told her not to dwell on it. In-ho asks hesitantly if they made up, and Seol says no, but she’s begun to understand Jung a little more too. She realized that she only sees what she wants to see and hears what she wants to hear, and only saw him the way she wanted to.

In-ho stares at her for a long beat, contemplating what she said, and then quickly returns to his jokey self and tells Seol to think up an excuse to tell her parents before they get home.

The next day, Seol narrates that Min-soo never came back to school, and everyone supposed that she took the rest of the semester off. Everyone teases Seol and acts terrified of her, but Seol tells us in voiceover that the gossip died down eventually, and school continued on as normal.

In-ha makes herself some ramyun and pulls out one of In-ho’s piano books to put underneath the pot, and pauses when she sees the name Hong Seol all over the book. It’s one of Seol’s childhood piano books that she gave to In-ho, and In-ha cackles in glee because things just got interesting.

Seol doesn’t know how to answer a text from Jung asking if she’s doing well, and happens by Uncle’s bar as In-ho is playing “Für Elise.” She sneaks in and sits down next to him at the piano, and he blusters that he was just playing it for fun. She urges him to keep playing, marveling at how the same song can suddenly sound so different.

She calls his rendition very sad and full of longing, and guesses that songs take on a totally different feel depending on the player. That seems to spark something in In-ho, and he watches Seol play a few bars while calling out the notes when she struggles. She’s adorably proud, and he praises her with a smile.

He suddenly asks, “Should I go to school?” She says he’s already at school, but he means officially enroll as a student, after taking his high school equivalency exam, like she suggested last time.

Seol lights up and grabs In-ho’s hand in excitement, planning out how they’ll use Joon’s old books and they’ll plan a schedule so that she can help him study. She’s genuinely giddy, though In-ho can only focus on the hand that she’s touching.

He turns comically red-faced, his cheeks like two glowy balls of hormones as bright as a neon sign. His heart races and he just stares at Seol, and then his hand, and then back at her, in a daze.

She finally notices his radioactive cheeks and he tries to brush it aside, but when she reaches out to touch his face curiously, he jumps up. Aaaaaah. This is so cute. Seol is worried that he’s sick or something, and he’s so flummoxed that she basically chases him around the room until he finally comes up with the excuse that he has a cold and runs away. Hee. I have to watch that again.

They walk home and Seol worries about In-ho practicing so late if he’s sick, and asks if he’s taken any medicine. He just puts on a tough act and then wonders why she’s following him instead of going home, and she tells him she’s going to help close down the restaurant because he’ll be useless. They argue back and forth the whole way, each trying to get the other to go home.

In-ho’s eyes widen as soon as they step inside though, because In-ha is there waiting to pounce. She acts all innocent about wanting to see where her brother works, and then Mom happens by, and In-ha learns in one fell swoop that this is Jung’s girlfriend Seol and her parents’ restaurant.

In-ha asks threateningly if she’s really Jung’s girlfriend and not In-ho’s like she’d assumed, and Seol doesn’t back down. She answers, “Yes,” and suddenly In-ha turns sweet and friendly, insisting that their last phone call was a misunderstanding. In-ha says she’s just childhood friends with Jung and nothing more, and acts like she can’t wait to be friends with Seol.

In-ho knows better than to leave In-ha alone with Seol, and drags her away before she does anything else. Seol closes the door after them and takes a breath like a hurricane just passed through.

At home, In-ha confronts In-ho about being so close to Jung’s girlfriend, and asks if he’s doing it to get back at Jung. In-ho runs with that and says that’s what he’s doing, but In-ha can see right through his lies and knows he likes Seol. He insists he doesn’t, but that just convinces her more and she teases him with the piano book.

Seol begins tutoring In-ho at the library the next day, as promised. When she takes out junior-high level books to test him, he gets all huffy about it, though when she sets the clock and tells him to start, he struggles to answer the first question.

In-ho peeks over at her and puts a hand over his heart to see if it jumps again. It’s not racing like it was yesterday, and he decides with relief that it must’ve just been the cold. Hahaha.

Elsewhere in the library, Eun-taek and Bora see Stalker Boy Young-gon about to enter and give Seol the heads up. Seol gets to work shelving books and lets Young-gon come to her, knowing that Bora and Eun-taek are nearby filming the exchange.

Young-gon accuses her of two-timing Jung with In-ho, and somehow spins it around to accuse Seol of using him because he’s innocent and making a fool of him. He has so many screws loose, I don’t even know where to begin.

Seol struggles to stay patient for the sake of gathering evidence, but Young-gon starts throwing a violent tantrum around her, spilling books on the floor and demanding that she stop ignoring him. He makes such a ruckus that In-ho comes over, and of course he flips out and chases Young-gon again.

A chase ensues through the whole library, and Seol barely catches up to them in the lobby and pulls In-ho away before he can hit Young-gon. She points to Eun-taek and Bora who are filming the whole thing, and hits In-ho in exasperation for ruining yet another attempt to catch Stalker Boy in the act. So sweet and well-meaning, but so not helpful, Baek In-ho.

Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young sees the commotion and accuses him of coming to the library all the time to see Seol, but Young-gon swears that Seol is the one harassing him when he just happened to be looking for a book. She buys it, of course, because she already doesn’t like Seol.

Eun-taek sends the latest video to Jung, who looks far more concerned when he gets to the part in the video where In-ho shows up and chases after Stalker Boy. That’s twice now that In-ho has been around and saved the day.

On the subway ride home, In-ho asks what’s so important about getting evidence when the first thing they should do is make sure Young-gon never comes near her again (using his fists). Seol reminds him that Young-gon managed to get him fired last time and he won’t hesitate to press charges, and In-ho smiles to realize that she’s protecting him.

Another passenger squeezes into the empty seat next to In-ho, shoving him so close to Seol that their legs are touching, and suddenly his heart starts to race again. He jumps up in alarm to avoid more skinship.

He peers at Seol’s book about successfully landing a job and asks if she isn’t tired of always working so hard. She points out that he works a part-time job, plays piano, and is studying to get into college, which to her sounds like he’s working harder than she is. In-ho: “I don’t like working hard. I caught this from you!” It’s not a diease!

Seol mock-apologizes and then hands him a box of cold medicine (aww), insisting that this is her way of preventing herself from catching his cold. Yes, very selfish of you. How could he possibly not love you now?

Jung eats dinner with his father, who asks if everything is going well at the office. Dad asks if he’s getting along with his co-workers, and says he agreed to Jung keeping his identity a secret at the office, but wants to make sure that Jung isn’t doing anything that’ll cause issues down the line.

Jung gets really defensive and asks if Dad heard something from someone, and wonders why it always feels like he does everything that his father asks, only to have Dad see him as a problem child. Jung: “Am I that strange in your eyes? Does that make you nervous? Why?” He cuts dinner short and walks out, and glances at Seol’s picture as he drives home.

Someone calls Seol on her parents’ home phone late that night, and she’s alarmed when it’s Young-gon, with the creepy greeting that he always knows where she is and what she’s doing, and he wouldn’t have called home if she’d pick up her cell phone.

Young-gon: “Why do you make me like this? I thought about the library and I’ve decided to forgive you. I know you brought that gangster along just to show me. Is it because of Da-young noona? I told you I’d break up with her.” *skin crawl* Seol hangs up on him, but that just makes Young-gon think harder about how he’s going to cause a rift between Seol and Jung for good.

He decides that proving Jung as a two-timer is the best way, and texts In-ha the next day to ask her for proof that she’s Jung girlfriend. So In-ha sends him a picture of her and Jung sitting close together from a year ago, and then throws in a shot of her cleavage as a bonus, egging him on to send her pictures of him in return. Young-gon laps it up and spends the day just staring at her picture.

Meanwhile, In-ha sees sunbae Sang-chul harassing Nerdy nearby, and she chases him off. Sang-chul is such a mooch that he can’t even find someone to have coffee with at school, and even Young-gon starts to look down on him and think of him as a loser.

Seol gets fired from her library job over the ruckus that Young-gon caused yesterday, in particular because of student complaints about the incident online. The complaint must’ve come from Young-gon’s girlfriend Da-young, because she watches Seol get fired with a satisfied smirk on her face.

Seol doesn’t have much of an appetite after that, Eun-taek and Bora try to cheer her up, not that it’s much help. Talk turns to future plans, and Bora says that her father’s going to open a shop for her, and Eun-taek says he’s going to become a model. Bora mocks him, and he challenges them: “How long do you think I’m going to be your underling?” Seol and Bora deadpan in unison: “Forever.” He doesn’t argue, and just puts side dishes on their plates like a dutiful minion.

Seol is dealt yet another blow when Young-gon texts her the picture of In-ha and Jung looking cuddly together. She’s so distracted that she barely registers In-ho arriving for his tutoring session, and he finally caves and tells her to get up so they can go home.

She’s still so in her head about the picture that In-ho has to prevent her from walking into lampposts, and it’s not until she looks up that she realizes that he’s walked her home. He insists that he’s going home, not walking her, but she points out that he lives in the opposite direction.

He just hands her the bag he’s been carrying all day and she opens it up to find a myriad of weapons, from mace, to a taser, to a retractable stick. Ha. They’re for use against Stalker Boy, obviously, and she thanks him.

In-ho asks what’s got her so lost in thought that she couldn’t even focus on studying, and when she says it’s nothing, he sighs that he thought she’d made progress with her brawling ways, but she’s back to holding everything in again. Seol says it’s not something that’ll be solved by talking about it, and heads home with a smile.

He watches her go and calls after her to open her eyes, and demonstrates by opening his eyes as wide as they go. She dutifully does the same, heh. In-ho watches her go and says to himself, “She can’t depend on me…” He decides that he wouldn’t depend on himself either, and lingers a while before turning around to walk home.

COMMENTS

Okay, I’m having to fight pretty hard not to be on In-ho’s ship. I know Seol likes Jung and only sees In-ho as a friend, but aaaaah, he’s being so cute and sweet and thoughtful, and they have such a wonderful easygoing rapport. Seol’s constant tension with Jung is so stressful sometimes that I find myself thinking how easy it would be if she were dating In-ho. That’s not really a reason to date a guy; it’s just hard not to compare them when the second lead is staring you in the face with those rosy cheeks. It was especially difficult not to think those thoughts when In-ho spent the entire episode doing all the right rom-com hero things, and struggling with his newfound feelings on top of it all.

I know that In-ho doesn’t always do things the best way either, but I was touched when he encouraged Seol to fight and be open about what’s bothering her instead of always enduring silently. I prefer his approach—encouraging her, arming her with weapons (lol)—compared to Jung’s method of stealth-fixing things for her, which always ends up backfiring on him when she discovers what he had to do to get there. Not to knock Jung’s approach completely though, considering that it was rather effective in dealing with Copycat Min-soo. She needed a public outing to stop her from being able to lie her way out of everything, and it’s one instance where I thought Jung managed to be helpful and not scary (or did Min-soo just overshadow him by being way creepier?). It doesn’t fix their problems, and maybe even confirms what Seol fears, but today I was so relieved at the outcome that I was grateful for Jung’s intervention. Because Seol should definitely fight her own battles, but when she’s up against crazies, a helping hand doesn’t hurt.

I still really worry that Jung doesn’t understand what’s wrong and will only continue to be this way though—trying to be good for Seol’s sake, but not really changing in the end. Was he showing restraint with Min-soo, or was this no different from him setting anyone else up for their demise? Is his cynicism just the result of a lifetime spent as the guy everyone wants something from, or is Dad’s worry about him something deep-seated and potentially disturbing? We’re beginning to see that this is a pattern with Jung—him trying his best to abide by a loved one’s rules, and hurt that they see him as strange no matter how well he abides. Maybe he can’t trust anyone because no one’s ever given him the benefit of the doubt, but hell, I don’t blame them for not being able to trust him fully, not when every flashback reveals another classmate’s comeuppance at his hand. Part of me thinks that if Seol broke things off cleanly, Jung might grow more and attempt to change before returning to her. Though the other part of me fears what might happen if she broke his heart entirely.

For now I’m content that In-ho did so much growing, thanks to Seol. He’s gone from a jobless, dreamless wanderer to a guy who’s willing to start at the bottom and work his way up for his dream, whether that’s playing elementary-level piano pieces or learning junior-high coursework. It’s an impressive turnaround, considering how prideful he was once, having to ask how a person works hard because he’d never had to work for anything before. I just especially love the way Seol inspires him to see music differently, and how she teaches him very naturally about the mood or feeling of a song changing depending on how it’s played. It seems obvious, but I can see how he might’ve been a prodigy who focused on technique and only ever learned to play a piece perfectly, without consideration for how he could interpret it and play sadly, or longingly. That’s the stuff that really gets me in the heart, though rosy cheeks are an adorable bonus.

I think I finally get how they do their teasers. Haha. for example. A teaser for the 2 episodes of the week doesn't mean it's only a preview for the two episodes but a mixture of the next episode for the following weeks.

Can you understand it? Haha.

I know it's confusing and frustrating how you wait for so long but it's not gonna happen on that episode. I know the feeling. :<

I was tricked by tvN, it doesn't give the review for next episode, but for next and next episode.
As we know, ep 10 show they say "I really Miss you" then hug each other, maybe it will show on the next next episode

Kind of natural, though - Jung's not exactly an easy puzzle to piece together, and she's doing a good job of not being a lovestruck fool.

He's dreamy and rich and intelligent, but he just set her up for a girlfight through extensive machinations. And good for her that she instantly sussed that out, in the moment - it's important that she be able to call him on that later.

Jung is a very, very odd boyfriend. Most girls have to deal with overprotective boyfriends and tell them to dial it back, but Seol's got one boyfriend who covers both ends of the spectrum: on one side he's pretty clearly setting up Young Gon for a fall, and on the other he's deliberately forcing crises so that Seol will have to fight them "for her own good". That is... not a normal pattern.

I'm hoping she sits him down soon and makes it clear that he needs to talk with her before executing any plan that involves her as a pawn or player. Because having your boyfriend set you up for a fight is incredibly weird.

yeah, on one hand Jung is awesome to watch precisely because of those Magnificent Bastard qualities and the way he's a pro at setting the stage for something to happen, but on the other, it makes him rather unnerving as a romantic interest because his mind simply doesn't work like most people's and he genuinely seems to think he's helping Seol by manoeuvring situations like Min-soo's (though he only gave her an opening last ep, she did the plagiarism on her own).

I love that Jung and Seol's biggest hurdle here involves (acknowledged) issues of trust and communication, rather than the standard social status issues.

Yes, it's glorious to watch it unfold. Your comment about what it's like for his love interest got me thinking, as I've been feeling like Jung's strategic thinking reminds me of Bang Won. Boon Yi can handle how he thinks because she's able to see through motivations and pretence too. In some way, Seol has that capability too, though Seol is just only emerging to a stronger sense of self. The problem arises, of course, if they should become adversaries instead of lovers - as the Jungs and Bang Wons are hard to beat.

Oh, wow. I never realised just how similar Jung and Bang Won are til you mentioned it. Bang Won, like Jung - also thoroughly plans his actions and is usually very sure that his way is the most effective way. They are people who are convinced that what they are doing is always beneficial and thus barely ever feel any guilt. We've seen them both absolutely wrecked and disappointed that the people around them don't always see them positively, doubt their intentions, and view them strangely.

It's interesting for a character on screen and like @pogo said, it makes the drama those fresh vibes because what's setting them apart isn't really the typical tropes.

0

I didn't see it as Jung setting Seol up for a girlfight. That just completely ignores all of Minsoo's agency here. I thought Jung did a creepy thing, pretending to mistake Minsoo for Seol, but Minsoo made the leap to "Seol put him up to this" and escalated things all by her creepy self.

Jung coordinated Jun's arrival at the classroom, and that's what really set things off. Once classmates were asking about Jun and Seol realized her brother was being dragged into this, things got ugly.

Jung was the one who ensured the photo was widely viewed, and the one who made sure Jun arrived within the hour. Seol realizes this instantly. He should have included her in this plan.

I read your comment below, about how Seol should have been in on this along, and I agree. Now that I think about it, while I enjoy Jung's underhandedness, most of the time, there is another way.

Didn't Joon appear out of the blue, though, asking Jung to buy him lunch? Or are we supposed to have understood that Jung initiated the contact offscreen?

0

*in on this all along

0

He should've included her in the plan but that doesn't mean he set her up to fight. That seems like a stretch.

0

No, Jung set Joon to come at that time. Joon already asking Jung for lunch some time before. And after knowing that Seol plan to talk to Minsoo after the doll incident, he chose to seat near Minsoo and make sure many people know her supposed boyfriend face. Then call Jun to come after the exam, when he know that Seol will confront Minsoo.

0

(cont)
@lindl
Of course Jung call Joon by the excuse of his promise to buy Joon and Ahyoung lunch.

0

...so...I'm not sure he would have gotten the same effect in including Seol in the plan. I thought the point of him forcing the truth out was so that Seol could make a public stand clearly. If he had included her, she might not have (in that sense) come to a realization on her own that enough was enough, and pushed back.

I thought it was pretty ugly...but it might have been necessary so that the feelings underneath don't just keep boiling and boiling (we won't know how such extreme feelings would manifest if they aren't lanced soon, in that sense)!

0

Seol would never have gone along with a plan to humiliate someone else. Min Soo was such an effective antagonist because Seol was reluctant to confront her publicly when she made a fuss about being the victim. Both Young Gon and Jung recognized this. By drawing attention to Min Soo's lies and then exposing them in front of a crowd, Jung made Min Soo's martyrdom seem overblown and the audience witnessed genuine surprise and frustration from Seol.

0

Wow, i think all the comments here made sense. It would be great if Jung had included Seol in his plan. But if he had informed her earlier, she might not participate. And the whole class won't be able to witness the "deception" or entire truth.

It's a sad situation for Min Seo to be confronted in this manner but its better now than later before she causes more harm to both herself and people around her.

While I feel sorry for Seol, I am glad that she is really gracious to acknowledge that if she had been more friendly with Min Seo, the misunderstandings would not have escalated.

0

If he told her about it in the first place and she agreed then what he did is in no way creepy.
There is a scene in the webtoon when he declares that "whether I tell her or explain to her what I do or not she gets mad at me. This time I'll just go ahead and do what I want since she's already mad at me anyway" (the context of what he says is something like that), that's why he proceeds to help her without telling her as at that time she wouldn't listen anyway since she asked for time apart for a while.
Even without telling her I still don't find it creepy though?
At the end of the day what he did is force min soo to be finally caught for her wrong doings and get her out of her own self deluded mind track of copying seol so much she starts to believe that actually, her "pretending to be seol" attitude is the real her and that seol is the one who is annoying her life instead. Min soo has a victim mentality and turns every wrong move of hers into it being seol's fault. Min soo wanted to own everything seol owns until seol is nothing.
As jung has dealt with these kinds of people who take advantage of him and try to take over his things before, he knew how to make min soo finally crack to get out of her delusions.
It was wrong of min soo to think that copying someone in every way possible will turn her into a completely new and successful person or into that person itself.

0

That scene where Jung is walking behind Minsoo reminded me so much of a similar one from Dangerous Liaisons. In both, it's like a predator tracking it's prey.

Nicely executed.

And I think we have to remember that Jung is very angry at that point. He's just seen a video of YoungGon harassing Seol and he knows he is partly responsible for that.

Just as Seol should have included Inho on her capture Creepy Stalker on vid plan?

This is why I think they should all be planning together.

But I totally do not think Jung was setting Seol up for a girl fight. Just as he probably did not foresee Seol would out MinSoo's plagiarism in public as she did.

1. She's only recently made it a habit of standing up for herself on a consistent basis.

2. Just because someone is a master strategist does not mean he is ALWAYS manipulating or able to manipulate to a particular outcome. Which is why he should knock it off.

I think it's more likely he is trying to quietly take care of these two in his own way but hasn't allowed for his gf getting in the way of his plans. And more power to her as her recent changes, more than his fathers trite words even if kindly meant, mare showing him that he can't control everything,

Yeah I think he just wanted to out Minsoo's latest delusion in public, and thus underscore her "victim" credibility. It just blew up on him. But then, that's the risk of manipulating people, things can easily go awry. I always worry that someone like Minsoo will crack and go suicidal in these kinds of storylines.

Could not agree more - kudos to Seol for keeping a level head and not getting blinded by the giddy emotions of a budding relationship with such a hottie.

And yes, Jung is quite odd in his logic- at least compared with conventional logic- in manuevering the lead up to the confrontation. When he just stood by as Min Soo launched at Seol and the brawl broke out, I lost a lot of my affection for him because I cannot fathom how he could watch someone he loves get hurt. I was really hit by how coldly rational he is.

I don't understand this. It was Seol's choice to fight.

He didn't just standby. Didn't he erase Younggon's taping of the event? And he was clse by to intervene if it began to look too dangerous. Otherwise, it's a girl fight and she has a right to fight for herself.

Yes, when it's a cat fight between two girls - if a tall strapping man gets involved and protects one of them - the other immediately looks like the victim of people ganging up on her. Jung getting involved there would immediately make Min Soo look sympathetic.

0

Petra, drama panda,

Yeah I did wonder why he wasn't helping Seol in the catfight so I am glad to read your inputs. Even with the Sunbae being left out from the project, he did not deliberately side with Seol. However, he didn't hesitate to beat up the intruder for assaulting Seol. So I think he just want to let Seol decide on the outcome in these two cases.

0

@petra, he engineered a confrontation. In my book, a worthwhile partner does not do that. He put Seol at risk, deliberately.

I understand that Jung is damaged and his priorities are well out of whack, but that's why I want him to get called on this sort of play - you do not blindside your partner. You do not do it "for her own good". That is not how a healthy relationship works.

0

I guess we disagree on what his intent was. Or how much of it went according to his plan. But it's hard to say what that was since we don't get to see inside his head and we are guessing from actions, expressions, etc.

We already know he thinks differently from most ppl, so that's a complication too.

And if you note, I said they should be planning things as a team.

0

So that you couldn't see Jung was the one coming at OH Young Gon to take away his cellphone filming the fight scene (which I believe he will use to blackmail Seol later). That was considerate and nice! Jung has his ways of dealing with things but for me he understands Seol the best. The fight needs to happen for them to sort everything out, not like Minsoo can harm Seol much except a few simple scratch, just a cat fight after all. And all of Seol's friends are there they eon't let the fight turn out ugly or serious. But Seol hold her ground too and Jung knows Seol won't give in even Bora is cheering for Seol's fight atm. They all know Seol needs that fight. Normal guys would do predictable things like butt in between the fight but not Jung, that's why I like him, he knows what is best for his girlfriend.

I don't like the idea that what Jung thinks is best for his girlfriend is to set up public situation like this so that Minsoo and Seol would have to confront each other.

I know we have to suspend our sense of reality when it comes to dramas, even if the drama is grounded in our own reality, but there is no way in hell that I would allow my friend to attack another person even if that person 10000% deserved it, especially with the peanut gallery surrounding them. It just seemed so odd for Jung to be standing there watching his girlfriend act that way. Minsoo is certifiable, yes, and definitely deserving of the backlash she received, but does it warrant a physical fight? I just didn't find it sitting quite right with me that Jung was just a part of the crowd during that scene.

0

@ cmak

I see what you are saying but didn't Minsoo attack Seol?
Seol is defending herself. While I would step in and try to calm my friend or bf if they were the initiator (or more likely with my friends, drunk), I'm going to let him fight in self-defense because that is his choice and right.

Unless he would get seriously hurt. I don't think Minsoo had a chance to prepare any weapons etc, so it's minimal damage.

0

I agree with cmak. Jung has set himself up as a little god, who treats people like pawns on a game board for him to move around as he wishes. He doesn't seem to care how many variables can go wrong; Seol or Min Soo could've gotten badly hurt in this episode and the Oh Young-Gon situation has gotten way out of control. If Jung's going to change in this drama, I wonder if it will be because someone he loves gets hurt due to a situation he engineered?

0

First off, I feel that some of the comments are talking as if Jung is her boyfriend in this episode. Well technically he is her boyfriend, but they are on a break (as per her request). I guess that is also a part of why Jung doesn't interfere directly. However in his own (strange) but natural way, he made the confrontation happen, because he probably knew that if he waited for Seol, things with Min Soo would be drawn out for a long time.

Also he stood there, made sure that Young Gon (who will hopefully get his comeuppance soon from Jung) couldn't video tape it. He was there also there most probably to monitor if things got out of hand. I am pretty sure, that if things got out of hand, he would've directly interfered. Even if Seol wasn't ready and was practically pushed into a fight, but at least she finally stood up for herself against Min Soo, and didn't just quietly endure things as she usually does.

True that "He was there also there most probably to monitor if things got out of hand. I am pretty sure, that if things got out of hand, he would’ve directly interfered." As I said the fight hasn't gotten any more serious than a mere cat fight so he didn't really need to step in, not to mention all of her friends are there to held her back before he could even do anything tbh. If there's one person need to be protected, ironically it would be Minsoo, not Seol cause no one is on her side at the moment. But OK I get the term of everybody trying to nippick everything Jung does as weird and wrong even the outcome turns out good. Can people let him breath? Just because mostly everyone else's brains don't function the way his does to solve problems doesn't mean he is wrong, he is just different. I wish people stopped forcing their way of life or moral codes on him because they are not him.

0

@Colin:

I'm totally agree with you.

"Can people let him breath? Just because mostly everyone else’s brains don’t function the way his does to solve problems doesn’t mean he is wrong, he is just different. I wish people stopped forcing their way of life or moral codes on him because they are not him."

It brings me to Ep.06, where Jung said,
"How perfect do you expect me to be?"
I do appreciate how he "engineered" Seol's confrontation with MinSoo. There is no such thing as a "perfect" solution for every problems. And in this case, Jung is successfully uncover all MinSoo's lies. And Jung's solution is kinda perfect, to prove MinSoo as loser and liar.

After the storm passed, I like the reflective Seol. That's what MinSoo and YoungGon lack of. If only Jung hears what Seol said. Perhaps he can learn all the things that he can do differently before "any accident" happen. Like Seol said, if only she accepted MinSoo as friend. One more friend is never too many. I don't think Jung ever reflects on whatever manipulation he ever did. His calculation is only up to the point that the score is even now. Then he moves on with his life.

Most of the time, I'm like Seol, I love peace and avoid confrontation, and it costs so much. In this thing, I like Jung better than the other kdrama hero, who tends to clean up "everything" for the heroine.

0

@ Roswara

He really does seem to move on, doesn't he? It's like afterwards, he says the past is the past and goes forwards. It seems like he doesn't see that it reverberates and that his initial actions had unforeseen consequences further down the line. Or he does see it but dismisses them.

They already had that talk back with the TA Heo incident. I don't think he remembered or old habits are hard to break. However, I like that he is watching out for her and is taking care of the situation even if she isn't with Min Soo. He sees that she is suffering silently and that he is not going to sit back and watch. I find that quite manly.

For all the people raising questions about why Jung didn't interfere in the fight..
I'd like to draw your attention, to the previous episode, wherein when Sung Chul was shouting on Seol because of the presentation, Jung did try to ease the situation, or atleast tried to placate Sung chul.. But that resulted in him saying, he's taking his girlfriend's side.
So if Jung, really, intervened in the Cat fight, it would have made it look like, Jung and Seol ganging up(not the word, I want to use,but anyway) on Min Soo , or Seol relying on her boy friend to fight others, hence making it seem unfair for Min soo.
And, even Bora and Euntaek didn't intervene in the fight, and yes Bora did cheer her to go ahead. Only Jun and Ah Young step in eventually to break them apart. Then how is only Jung the bad guy to not intervene whereas Bora and Euntaek gets a free pass, when it could seem like, Bora's cheer looked like her fueling the brawl, ergo, encouraging the fight!

On how Jung engineered this situation, whilst knowing the outcome. I honestly don't think Jung can actually predict the exact scenario, that'll play out. He must've envisioned a confrontation, but no way in hell, can he be sure about a physical brawl.
His actions leading to the outcome may seem objectionable most of the time, but in this regard, I think Seol really needed to have a confrontation, and that too in front of that audience, so that Min Soo doesn't dogde it like she did before, she needed a wake up call.
But, later when Seol thinks about it and the conclusion she derives is what matters, and that does make her a different person from Jung.
For Jung it ends at the outcome, for Seol, it teaches her a new lesson, and so in future she'll be more vigilant.
On a side note: this confrontation was way more worse in the webtoon, comparing to that this appeared to be a milder version.

Anyway thanks for the recap. Cheers!!

Yes, he's cute, but...he's not deep. Jung and Seol both feel like they are miles apart right now, like they have nothing in common, but in truth they are both deep thinkers, hard workers, introverts (although she hides it better) worried about how they appear to others and non-aggressive by nature. In Ho can sit there and be amazed at her thoughts, but Jung could, I think, amaze her right back if both of them gave him the chance.

For me, I feel like I'm clouded by the fact that Jung is being presented as the first lead so I am inherently rooting for him to be with Seol, especially since it was made very clear to viewers that they both have feelings for each other. If two people have made the decision to date and be exclusive with each other, I would never want anyone else to get in between that decision.

However, when I take a step back and really evaluate objectively what it is about Jung that is so intriguing, I find that it boils down to the fact he's just not a straight nice guy. Girls love a bad boy. I always come to this conclusion. I don't see WHAT he's done throughout the series that would make him more swoon-worthy than Inho. Again, I am not rooting for Seol to be with Inho because she's in a relationship already and has shown that she likes Jung, but it's interesting to me when so many viewers declare how Jung is an amazing boyfriend, whereas I would appreciate more what Inho has done in the context of a relationship.

It really all comes down to preference and what a person finds charming. I'd say most people prefer extroverts and characters who smile and joke a lot, so that's why it's easy to be drawn to In Ho (...and admittedly his flaws are rarely discussed and I've seen the reasoning, "He's changed!!" with his moments in flashbacks that made him seem less than pleasant).

And Jung is far from swoon-worthy, but I fail to see the "bad boy" appeal as much as Seol has a connection she can't explain to a guy she is still trying to understand. She's not attracted to his "dark side," she wants to understand him imo. With Jung and how he rarely explains his side or defends himself, the audience gets to decide his intentions more often than not. And honestly since we saw Seol's judgement/perception of him first, he's kinda damned if he does, damned if he doesn't in many cases. If he suddenly changed and became "normal" and good, people would be suspicious and say he didn't REALLY change, for instance. If he tried to beat up YG like In Ho did, people would say he's psycho. For some, he literally will never be an okay character (or boyfriend to Seol!) because he isn't their cup of (antihero) tea. And that's okay!

Urm, I always went for the good guy, the nice one. If that's second lead syndrome, then so be it. And I don't care if the ship is going to sail or if there's a ship or not, haha.
I will go down with that ship!

So I'm surprised this is the first show where I don't have SLS.

Yoo Jung is complex, highly intelligent, intriguing, different, supportive, and adds to her growth.

A lot of ppl seem to be saying InHo makes her grow more but did we miss the times Jung told her to stand up for herself? For example, when he bandages her arm after the Drunk and the broken bottle incident or when he saves her from the rapist. But really, it's not a competition between the two.

I think the best illustration of that is the part in the bedroom when he is sleeping over and he says she works hard and that's good, it's not a bad thing and that she's doing great? (Ep 6, I think) If she hadn't fallen for him before, that would be a good moment. **Her whole life, she's wanted someone to say that.**

It's an "I notice you. I understand and accept you". And he gets it too. What it's like to feel like you have to earn love (from parents and others) with good behavior and hard work while someone else gets it naturally with ease.

I personally think that's SWOON-WORTHY X10.

Having said that, I don't think Jung is an amazing boyfriend, haha. As in real life, they have some issues they need to work through.

yes, yes, and yes, Petra. I just read KK's comment below, maybe the reason that 'we' do not have sls is because usually the first male lead is the one who treated the female lead without respect, calling her name like dog fur, teasing her look when he doesn't really know her just to get her attention. You know, the usual assholes in Kdrama land that treated the female lead badly and ended up get the girl anyway. and in this series we can tell which of the male treated her that way.

The first male lead act like the sl in any other Kdrama, he is caring, understanding, encouraging, and love her just the way she is. In the beginning because they are alike, and in the process, just the way she is.

0

Oh, good insight, Dani.

I really hate it when they do that. It's so disrespectful.
I'm up for some playful teasing when I've known the person for a while but really, name calling at the first few meetings and/or criticisms on my appearance are going to get nothing but cold disdain...and a swift kick to the shins.

As much as I love Seol and relate to her, she really is too nice in the beginning of this show. Which is why it's so satisfying to see her stand up for herself now, I suppose.

Dog Fur, indeed!!! Urrr!!! ?

Although I didn't like the way Jung treated her either (if he did do all the things she thought he did), I guess it's more in my personality to accept a battle of the wits over insults to my pride from a stranger who is moreover mooching food off me.

Neither would have lasted very long before I started choosing some choice Korean phrases tbh, haha but for Seol, I think the calm thinker would be better when and if he lets go of manipulation as his go to style of conflict resolution.

(But not ALL
of it as the art of negotiation, making deals, people management and using leverage will be very useful for someone in his financial and social position.)

My heart already bleeds for the poor lad! I was fully prepared to get SLS before watching this show, because I liked In-ho (so so much) in the webtoon. It´s not that I´m shipping him and Seol. It´s obvious that Seol doesn´t see him that way, besides Jung and Seol are a natural click, BUT I don´t want In-ho to SUFFER. And they´re going to drag him all the way through this nasty stinky mud pit of a SL heartbreak! I´m already getting teary eyed....

In-hoya!

im so glad y'all outed urselves as being on the inha-jae woo train. i kinda loved that she chased off sang chul single handedly. and man it would be so nice if she got to reconnect to her love of art. u dont have to be a painter to be involved in art! she coulda been a curator or smth, lots of options. i know she's NUTS and may never calm down enough to do anything properly but i still want her to have a chance to u know find her own passion and purpose. i mean even back then when things were "good" her own brother was saying how she has no future. he's obv grown alot since then and still does his best to take care of her in spite of how volatile she is. so like, i think if she did find smth, whatever it was. he'd be 100% supportive. if for no other reason than to get her out of his hair hahaha.

It was pretty telling when he had this book open to art history or whatever and she totally knew the artist (style of art)? ...I mean, I was actually impressed because it really meant that no matter what Inho thought of Inha's talent, she actually clearly loved the subject and has subject matter expertise on it. Which makes her a more interesting character (although not any less crazy).

Kandinsky is the name of the artist. He is one of the best known expressionists and probably the pioneer in abstract art.

You don't need to be an expert or arts major to recognise his paintings, but sure, when you know nothing about In-ha, it's probably surprising when she can.

0

@Jon G ah thanks for naming the artist...abstract art isn't my thing so guess I was projecting my own feelings here hah. Am assuming it's like someone identifying Shakespeare as a classic read and dial back my being impressed a bit :p

I'm so happy to see so many others ship them too HAHA. She was so cute when she was defending him and you can just see how her boisterous bitchy self can be useful indeed. I just love her for all her craziness. If we get more adorable Jae Woo / In Ha scenes where she's just kicking ass - it would just seal the deal with my love for this show.

That would be so awesome! I love how he doesn't just seem so smitten w/ her cuz of her looks like most/all of the other guys. (That's often a good sign that in the future if they get together, he stands his ground w/ her - something someone like her could really use in a relationship.) I couldn't stand her up to this episode (yes, I know she has a lot of hurt & sadness deep within from her past), but she was just so unlikeable. Then this episode with the Loser Removal Project and then the whole scene with Jae Woo (?), chasing off the moocher, recognizing the art in the book - that was all so well done. That scene w/ the art book - when she was talking to Jae Woo about it, she just seemed so "normal" and wasn't her usual hysterical self. Hoping we get to see more of that and some good character growth in the future. That scene gives us hope for her...

Ahhhh I kept refreshing for this!!
I really like her and yoo jung's relationship and I can't wait to see how he grows and gets better as a person BUT my heart aches for Inho. Honestly. He's such a great guy ugh. I'm happy the minsoo thing was solved because she was getting annoying but I felt slightly sorry for her as I could see where she was coming from. Younggon is literally the most annoying character, the guy who acts him is great because everytime I see him I want to rip his hair out.

Also is it just me or has the acting for baek inha gotten more tolerable? I found it annoying before but I kind of like it now?

AND ALSO. How am I going to wait 2 whole weeks? I am literally already crying.

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you about In Ha. I didn't find her acting annoying per se, but after these past two episodes, I kind of liker her a little bit.

As for Min Soo, I want to feel sorry for her, but I'm not sure if things would have been any different if she had had friends. Seoul says that maybe if she had befriended her things might have been different, but I don't think so. There was a fundamental flaw in her character which is why I think it was so easy for her to be manipulated by Young-gon. Even if Seoul had befriended her, she still wouldn't have had good grades, or a boyfriend, or awesome friends like Bora and Eun-taek, and she could have followed the same path to jealousy and thinking that Seoul "steals" from her.

I liked Seoul's comment that "none of these things came easy to me." Min Soo just wanted without putting in the work. It's hard to feel sympathy for that kind of victim mentality delusion.

Agreed on your second paragraph. In fact it might have escalated her more quickly because she would have felt "entitled" to have all of Seol's friends etc. Not that we would really know either way.

I thought so too. Befriending her might have made it worse.

"There was a fundamental flaw in her character which is why I think it was so easy for her to be manipulated by Young-gon."

This is actually why I find her much more pitiable. She *was* creepy, and she *was* deluded, but ultimately, it felt like she was too easy to use, and did become a victim (of Young-gon's machinations) because of that. I'm reading arguments about her agency, and while I agree to some extent (yes she had agency, yes she chose to copy Seol, and keep on lying), it also is as much a combination of manipulation and circumstance. She was the object of Young-gon's deliberate messing because he discovered how suggestible she was, and then she was put into circumstances where she reflexively lied to save face.

It's not that anything she did is right. It's that she was Young-gon's puppet, and she wasn't at the same level either intellectually or emotionally, for it to have been an equal fight for her with any of them - Seol, Jung, Bora, etc. And that makes her sad.

At the end of their fight, when she's on the ground with Seol looking down at her, I really wanted Seol to finish it by giving her a hand up. I think that would have made it less terrible for both of them.

It could have been the BGM during In Ha's scenes.
I noticed something that sounded slightly comedic yet with a lot of energy (electric guitars?).

The actress did mention during an interview that she exaggerated In Ha's expressions to bring comedic relief - but this is the first time I got it thanks to the music.

Yes! I noticed it when I was watching but that music definitely helped me to grow more fond and catch the comedic feels during her scenes. I get these vibes that just feels like she's gonna go wreck everything, put all matters out of order and then laugh at the end of it (and I'll probably laugh along with her) LOL. I don't even know anymore.

It's not just you. I've liked her a lot more these past two episodes, but I don't feel like her acting has changed at all so it's strange. Maybe it's just easier to swallow in large doses with full context instead of those snippets we were getting before. Or maybe it helps that she's interacting with characters that we're already familiar with. I know that I love when her targets are people I can't stand and people who deserve her messiness. Her rudeness to Sang-chul, her take down of Min-soo, and her reaction to that photo Young-gon sent all made me laugh and cheer her on.

I completely agree about Inha! In previous episodes, I abused the fast forward button whenever she came on screen - she was just so annoying! But like all the lead characters, the writers beautifully capture their many layers and growth as they interact with the people around them. Inha, while still annoying, is also showing different sides of herself and we are getting to know her better. I actually laughed throughout her scenes, and her meddling ( with yong gon and sangchul) endeared me to her a little bit.

Required fields are marked *

It's not just you, that's for sure. I was never really annoyed at her acting, she didn't have much of an impact but I did think she could be of great use and as I binge watched till episode 8 I was dying for her to be used to make the story more interesting; lo and behold I think my prayers have been answered.

She's been awfully loud since the get go and it's a lot to swallow for us viewers. Yet as we get to know her better - at least yourself and plenty others - we grow more comfortable and fond of her character. She seems like she's not just an empty shell with only annoying traits. Seeing the flashbacks also helped. Her beating up Min Soo despite the original intention being Seol also made me love this crazy girl so much more. + chasing stupid annoying Sunbae away from Jae Woo, how do you not grow to like her tbh? Hahaha. Maybe it's wrong to root for someone clearly nuts - but well oh well.

I started watching Cheese in the Trap with an open mind that Jung and Seol might not end up together, even though it was pretty obvious in the webtoon that they will end up together. As I continued watching the series and began reading the comments, I didn’t expect that a lot of people would ship Seol and Inho. I kind of understand that they would do that because of Jung, but that’s an entirely different story.

I watched Seol and Inho’s scenes and I never once saw Seol see him in a new light. She first saw him as a nuisance until she became comfortable around him and eventually became friends with him. I will never understand what the others see between Seol and Inho because there really is nothing there. It’s pure, platonic relationship on Seol’s part. This episode solidified the fact that they are just friends and that Seol only sees him as a friend.

I have to say, in the 10+ years I’ve been watching dramas, Cheese is making it on my top ten list. I can watch this drama over and over again, analyze every character, scrutinize each scene, and critique each episode, because that’s how amazing it is. This is why I love slice-of-life and character-driven genres.

On another note, the three’s relationship in the drama somehow reminds me of Hana Yori Dango. Cheese in the Trap is like Hana Yori Dango’s older brother or sister—older, more knowledgable and experienced of the world, and more mature in dealing with relationships.

+1 I never see anything more than friends and sometimes family like bond between Seol and In Ho. If there's feelings more than that it's one sided from him. I understand that In Ho is cute and all but, really? Pushing stuff that is not even there? I also read some people that had read the webtoon were a little furious that they changed Jung to In Ho to tend Seol's wound in the drama. Well, when they want to make it look like triangle love story, perhaps it's necessary to change Jung to In Ho. This eps other than Seol confront Min Soo is like a big parade of In Ho's closeness to Seol. I can't imagine how CITT is when there's no Jung. Seol and In Ho, would it be so enjoyable to watch? Wouldn't it be so typical Kdrama plot?

I was a little surprised at that scene tbh with Inho tending Sul's wounds instead of Jung. It makes a difference to the whole dynamics but i have to remind myself that it bound to be different. I also thought about Sul's crying habits or unable to cry, it goes hand in hand with her hand grabbing habits.
Buuuut im still very satisfy with the drama, i would never pick up this drama if it has the normal plots and twist. Even though i read the webtoons and make comparissons, the drama is good as the toons

I haven't read the webtoon, but I was surprised as well that Jung didn't attend to her wounds when he had so caringly tended to her injuries in the past. While I was watching it, I kept thinking "Don't you see the scratch on her face, aren't you going to tend to it ?..."

In the webtoons (highly recommend read) it shows a "softer" side of Jung, we are always seeing him cold, calculative and pretty much maneuver people around him that he deems "crossed the line". So changing this scene, it seems that he just didnt care enough which wasnt the case

0

I actually was a bit upset that one of my fave scenes from the webtoon, the one where Jung tends to Seol's wounds after the fight with Min Soo, was changed to the scene with In Ho tending to her scratches. My heart broke a bit! I know, this may sound like whining and selfish but ughhhh. In the webtoon, after Jung tends to Seol's wounds, he tells her that he'll keep waiting for her. I understand that they want to push the love triangle but, that scene was so precious..

I can understand why that would disappoint you and others if you'd all grown attached to that scene. I'd probably feel the same if I'd read the webtoon.

As a drama watcher it's hard to imagine the scene any other way. I've grown attached to those hair ruffles from Jung, so the sad, slow one in this scene in combination with his lines hit me in the heart more than any wound healing could have.

Required fields are marked *

True, there was that precious scene by the water. The lines that Jung said were the same in the webtoon when he tended her wounds. I'm over my sadness over the switch. I understand they had reasons in doing that. And for the most part, the drama has stayed true to the original material. Also, I can see from the preview that we will be rewarded handsomely for our patience in two weeks, hehe.

0

They changed the scene ????? ........ yikes! .... Is it possible that they are actually going to make inho-seol a pair ? esp since the webtoon is not finished. That would explain the white washing of inho's character

... as cute as inho is, i am actually tired of his excessive screen time.

If you actually compare screen time, jung has comparatively less. Its just that he FEELS omnipresent bec its essentially him driving the story

Required fields are marked *

Yes, they switched the guy tending to her wounds. But all the lines that Jung said to Seol in the webtoon bit were still said by drama Jung, that scene by the water, when he gave her the meds. Maybe they just wanted to push the love triangle a bit to make things more interesting? Though with 10 episodes down, the In Ho-Seol pairing is still one sided (for me). And I think In Ho understands this as well. We don't see him push his intentions or try to sabotage things between the OTP. He rather tries to deceive himself that he was just imagining all his feels, LOL. If anything, I wish for him to grow and find his purpose in life.

Haha at Jung being omnipresent!

I think that was episode 9, not 10. The ratings dropped (not much, but slightly) for this episode. And I don't think it's too presumptuous to assume it was the lack of Jung and Seol interaction lol, many of the netizens' comments were basically, "Okay but where's Jung. YG was in this episode more than Jung."

0

True that.

A possible love triangle feels contrived. I'm kind of disappointed that the show went there.

Jung doesn't need a love rival, he is his own worst enemy.

With them making InHo so much more palatable and making Jung less, I'm worried the show is heading for a surprise ending.

I also thought this episode solidified that even despite all of Seol's trust issues, Jung's wrongdoings, their lack of interaction, In Ho being RIGHT THERE and so obviously crushing on her, and basically the entire campus conspiring against Seol and Jung (lol I'm dramatic)...she still is preoccupied over Jung and seems to miss him.

I didn't see this episode as a game-changer, and I hope it's not, but I did see the drama place In Ho in the usual cookie-cutter second lead in a love triangle mold this episode. And I'm not appreciating that (despite his cuteness) just because he had so much growth going for him. I don't want his scenes to be reduced to pining over Seol and watching Jung and Seol in sadness from afar. *sigh*

It's an easy pull for the re-watch as you are looking for clues and wondering if you missed anything too.

And I also read what ppl say here and I'll go re-watch to see if my interpretation changes.

But I'm embarrassed to say I did the rewind thing FAR too many times on that opening back hug scene. Lol.

It just seem so nuanced. He could just hug her but the way he settles into her neck in stages, idk. It spoke volumes to me about the depth of his feelings.

0

Oh yeah.. Good am not the only one..
This is the only series I have bothered downloading and rewatching almost twice or thrice.. Especially Jung-seol scenes..(also bothering to comment on dramabeans)

And I think among all the kdrama male leads I have come across so far... Jung is the most interesting and intriguing character..and the fact that he is not all perfect just makes him more endering..!!

0

UGH. I have the absolute same worry as you! Inho's feelings (specifically his romantic ones) for Seol are pretty much the least interesting thing about him. It's so cookie cutter, been there, done that. While I'm absolutely glad that he's found a healthier family in Seol's - and a healthy, positive relationship with Seol, I think there are so many other more important things to be explored instead of all of this...well...man pain, lmao. Heck, even the harboring of a crush towards someone doesn't mean that it completely overshadows everything else in the way we view and act towards them. T__T

I want to know more about his future goals, his relationship with his sister (since clearly it's a very complicated one, and both of them have a lot of issues with each other), and his relationship with Jung too!!! It's clear that he feels like Jung has done him wrong, but based on past episodes, it seems like there are things he's regretful and guilty of as well. There's so much to be explored there. D:

Actually I appreciate that he's not doing the usual second lead "wanting to break up the main couple" thing though (like when he saw them quarrelling, but walked away instead of staying around to comfort Seol)!

But yeah, I agree that THIS episode especially Inho was doing everything a typical rom-com hero does and everything he does would come across as swoony for any other drama...but in this one, Seol has Jung on her mind, and she's clearly not registering anything...

Come to think of it, Jung also never play the usual jealous male lead act with Seol. Remember when he saw Seol and In Ho the first time when he was just following Seol all over the town when she didn't hear him calling her name? He just stood there, watching them. Some might find that creepy? But, what do usually the Kdrama male lead do, they will grab the girl's wrist and drag them against her wish. I have not seen him doing any of the typical irritating behavior that seems to be the general norm of Kdrama? I know what I would do if a guy drag my wrist. And I don't even need In Ho's bags of weaponry for that.

"Seol has Jung on her mind, and she’s clearly not registering anything…"

I think that's true, but I think In-ho might be in her subconscious.

Do you remember the scene where she is walking home and Jung texts her to ask how things are going at school? She ignores his text and sighs to herself "What do I want right now?"...

...and right at that moment, she hears In-ho playing the piano and goes to find him. Ay...it made my heart flutter. ^_^

" I don’t want his scenes to be reduced to pining over Seol and watching Jung and Seol in sadness from afar. *sigh*"

I really don't see this at all in In-ho's trajectory -- he's much too interesting and sensible to mope when he's spent the last five years moping. He's got a goal now, and he's got a friend in Seol. And even if his heart races with her, he's not going to chase a taken girl. For all his brashness, he's got a code of honour that is distinctly the "old-fashioned" kind.

He also clearly differentiates between his feelings for her, and a relationship. He's beginning to have feelings, but that doesn't automatically equate to making her return them, or getting between her and Jung. If anything, I see him as working actively against himself and for Jung. And his presence at Seol's side is the best catalyst for Jung to work hard at his relationship with her.

All the evidence so far -- where In-ho's had ample opportunity to drive any number of wedges between -- shows him holding back more and more, letting them -- no, wanting them to figure it out and have their relationship work.

Agree with your observations about In Ho. So far, despite both boys seemingly frustrated with the other, you can sense that there is still some lingering feelings (respect? concern?) for each other. There were certain instances, like dealing with drunk Seol, that you can see what they could be. That was fun to watch. Also, with regards to Jung, despite knowing his MO, he hasn't done anything bad to In Ho as well. That part where he urges In Ho to see the music prof, I think that was Jung's way of pushing him to try pursue his dream again. Give me the bromance! Hehe

I think my issue and my worry stems from how they revealed In Ho's crush. It felt so cute and over-the-top that it came off very...trite? One episode ago, I never imagined they'd pull blushing and heart palpitations either...so I mean...

Also it was never necessary to make him a love interest imo. Or at the least, make his feelings so dang obvious. I felt like I was coerced into going, "Awwww poor guy!!!!!" the entire episode and it was a little annoying since In Ho is a great character and I don't want to pity him over the girl not liking him. Especially because I think his feelings are very misplaced and comes from a lack of sisterly affection.

I am happy he respects their relationship and I hope that he doesn't mope around over it but the way they approached his crush was just a little much and almost off to me upon rewatching the episode. This is just my opinion tho!

I agree with you tbh! I like Seol and In-ho as friends, they have a great dynamic. And as much as I like In-ho as a character [he's very endearing to me] I find it weird and a bit disconcerting that he couldn't control his feelings for Seol when he's very much aware that she has a boyfriend. He shouldn't have allowed his feelings to reach that far IMO :/

I'm not an In Ho's shipper, cause I find them to be quite sibling-like instead of anything more...but when you said "He shouldn't have allowed his feelings to reach that far," I thought, I wish feelings were that easy to control. They're not, unfortunately.

"...he couldn’t control his feelings for Seol when he’s very much aware that she has a boyfriend. "

Technically, Seol and Jung are on a break right now. I think In-ho's crush on Seol has been building for a while, and it's only now that she isn't fully dating Jung that he's allowing himself to even consider having feelings for her.

I'm actually appreciating that while I get that In Ho has a crush on Seol, she seems oblivious and he seems to actively root against himself. He kind of doesn't want her to like him back, and that's nice? I consistently get a brotherly feeling off of him, and the way the actor is portraying In Ho, it feels like In Ho would also be okay in a brotherly role.

He just really likes Seol, and wants her to like him and be proud of him, and he kind of wants to murder anyone who hurts her. But I'm not convinced that he wants to kiss her.

I agree completely, for me Seol is the family that InHo lost it´s a return to having a sister (InHa) but in a better and positive way someone who cares about him and I think he will confuse it with romantic feelings at first.

Yes! He's also respectful of how she feels about Jung. Not respectful of Jung's wishes, which why would he be? But he just cares about Seol. And his own reaction to his feelings (dawning horror?) was hilariously adorable.

I know we're all waiting on the end of this one, but this reminds me a little of similar discussions we had about Seo Ha-joon aeons ago.

And while I can certainly see that In-ho doesn't WANT to be falling for Seol at all, he still is developing those feelings, almost against his own will. It's a very 'I will avoid my crush because I don't know what to do with these feelings' thing to do, but I think he's certainly headed down the path of eventually wanting to kiss her. There's certainly a touch of family/buddies in their relationship, but In-ho's starting to register a tinge of something else in it too. While Seol, of course, is oblivious and only thinks of him as her friend.

If the boyfriend in this story was anyone BUT Jung, In-ho would be a shoo-in for Seol's heart, if she could actually bring herself to register him that way. But I can also see how people might be won over by the ease of their relationship, which is such a contrast to Jung, who takes a lot more hard work and isn't as instantly warm and endearing.

Ha Joonieeee ?? haha I never quite diverted from the main couple then and I haven't felt that way with citt either, but with second leads like them; it's hard for the heart not to hurt watching them struggle to keep their feelings bottled in.
Well, developing feelings for someone is almost always inevitable but it really is up to the person on how they'll deal with it. So I hope In Ho can stay the darling friend that he is for Seol. He has a lot of other things going on and dreams he wants to achieve so I trust him to keep seeing Seol as a support pillar and a motivation instead of dwelling over his hurting heart on not having her or something. It's crazy to imagine him doing that but past dramas have done more absurd things so there's always that fear - but I'm gonna trust the Cheese writers with this. Their friendship have been wonderful so far so I believe even if he does have moments that he wants to kiss her, his desire to protect her is just a gazillion times bigger.

" But I can also see how people might be won over by the ease of their relationship, which is such a contrast to Jung, who takes a lot more hard work and isn’t as instantly warm and endearing."

The thing is, I really don't believe that a relationship *should* take as much work as Seol's relationship with Jung takes. A good relationship should be *easy*. You should be able to laugh with your partner and trust your partner and feel comfortable in his or her presence. A relationship that takes as much work as Seol's and Jung's has taken -- especially when the relationship is very much in its infancy -- does not seem like a healthy or desirable relationship to me.

That is what has always attracted me to the Seol/In-ho pairing (or, frankly, Seol-as-a-Single-Lady. I find that preferable to her being with Jung). She's clearly comfortable and happy around In-ho. He has spurred positive growth in her, and she in him. She smiles so brightly around him that her cheeks scrunch up like an adorable chipmunk. She's *happy* with him.

With Jung, we see fleeting moments of giddiness, but during most of her relationship with him, she has (rightfully) been questioning his motives and actions. She doesn't fully trust him, and his actions -- past and present -- never give her reason to.

I get that Jung is rich and handsome and mysterious. But he's truly *terrible* boyfriend material. He's manipulative, controlling, and feels empathy only selectively. Those aren't desirable traits in a partner. My greatest wish for Seol is that she NOT end up with Jung at the end of this drama. I have never in my life disliked a first lead as much as I dislike Jung. Mind you, I think he's an intriguing character and that Park Hae Jin plays him masterfully, but I think he's horrible boyfriend material.

There's a basic flaw in that premise, which is the idea that relationships can only be easy and comfortable if they are that way from the start. Or that the relationships that start out easy and comfortable, will stay that way and must be the right ones.

Honestly, I don't think In-ho is any better as boyfriend material - he's brash, immature, has repeatedly got Seol in trouble because following his impulses apparently >> actually listening to what she's trying to say (i.e. STOP INTERFERING so she can get unambiguous evidence that Young-gon's stalking her!). All the cute piano moments in the world haven't changed that so far.

0

Also, when I spoke of Jung and In-ho in terms of one being hard work and the other not, I was talking about their individual personalities (one instantly lovable, one introverted and reserved), not just their potential relationships with Seol.

Maybe that didn't come across as clearly, and for that I apologise, but I cannot accept your contention re: easy being better, applying to the personality aspect of it. Instantly lovable and charismatic is not always 'better' in a relationship than the one who takes more time and effort to trust or open up.

I never ship them either. But it will be nice if they can continue be friends, especially when Jung and Inho in good terms already. Inho can become his confidentee regarding Jung.

I agree with you a 100 %. This is a developing relation between Jung & Seol. I love the slice of life feel and the flawed bad sexy guy falling in love. But perhaps this has been done before too many times but because it is done realistically and tastefully it is so enjoyable.
Do you know of any other developing romances between bad/hot guy and a girl done realistically?

Ahhh I'm so glad that I am not the only one squeeing HARD for Inho, especially after today's episode. Because it's made clear that Seol and Jung like each other and she still has feelings for him despite his slightly psychopathic actions, I don't necessarily find myself rooting for Inho and Seol to be together romantically, but for them to continue helping each other grow. I love how easily they interact with one another and feed off of each other's strengths, while slowly helping change the weaknesses. I loved all their scenes together, from her taking initiative to helping him study, and him buying all those weapons to protect herself since she made it clear she doesn't want him to solve things physically. Both of their developments over the series have been so inspiring to watch, and I love them both so much for it.

I know Jung is the OTP, but man sometimes I really wish his trajectory could include a little more growth in it like Inho and Seol's. His stealthy machinations really bother me because I don't like the fact he manipulates people, even if it helped Seol get things out in the open. Like many have said, he doesn't outright force people to do things, but he plans things just so that they take the bait and do exactly as he expected. He's smart as hell, I give him that, but that's what makes him scary. He clearly cares for Seol, but I wish he could express it in a more healthy way. Hopefully Seol will be able to affect change and growth in him like she does with Inho.

Sigh now commence the two weeks of waiting :'(

But that's the whole point of Jung's character. It's pretty much to do with how he's wired, and there's no way that would change in a day. It's part of the beauty of their relationship that they actually struggle with each other's personalities - they don't get dramaland makeovers. They are what they are, as we all are in real life, and it's a matter of finding out how you can live with that other person's differences. Jung's growth is in all this.

But the bigger growth you're talking about - the crisis point, if the preview's any indicator - I'm pretty sure that's coming too. Just...it's going to slow and painful and sweet, but so much better for it.

But the way he is is affecting his relationship with Seol. Which is why I am hoping that she will affect more change in him the way she has done in others if he still wants to be with her. I would never tell anyone to get into a relationship hoping the other person will change into who they want them to be, as opposed to accepting them for who they are. Yet Seol and Jung have both seen that while Seol is beginning to understand him more, she can't just accept what he does because it doesn't align with what she believes.

I love love love how she asked him, “So you just stand still and I go closer? Does that fix everything?” She's letting him know that she can't be the only one changing while he stays the same, and he acknowledges that he is trying. THAT is what I am hoping to see in the next few episodes. He's been fairly the same plotting with Inha and inviting Jun to meet him in front of Minsoo, but now that he sees it's not what Seol wants, I'm hoping he can begin to show his efforts. Not asking for it all in a day, but at least some evidence at this point would make me feel a whole lot better about Seol and Jung being together.

Dark!Seol was finally unleashed! Good for her! This drama has made me cheer for violence more than I'm comfortable with lol. But Seol is love. She's grown so much but still stayed true to herself.

I liked the focus on In Ho and Seol's dynamic. Somehow making In Ho's crush obvious has made me appreciate their friendship more? I really doubt he has felt platonic affection from a girl. He doesn't have a reference point for this, bc he doesn't have a sister who truly cares for his well-being. (From the flashbacks I'd say that's his fault as much as In Ha's.)

I almost wish I could ship them even slightly but I can't imagine them as a couple now that I'm finally enjoying their platonic bond. This was the first episode I found him absolutely adorable. But this is exactly why I hate love triangles, because I always feel like I'm being coerced into pitying the second lead. I'm really hoping the focus remains on In Ho and his piano rather than pining over Seol.

Is it bad I actually lol'd over Jung messing with Min Soo? She was being a creep so I thought it was fitting. I can't feel too bad for her, even though she's pitiable. And why did Seol talking to In Ho about Min Soo and understanding her and Jung seem like it hit home to him? Was he thinking about him and Jung or am I reading into things and my new-found thirst for bromance?

The lack of PHJ's face was felt for me but Jung really was a looming presence in this episode lmao. I'm glad this couple has had a legit break! It's nice seeing Jung give her space while still taking the initiative to show he cares and is waiting for her (even though it looks like he's back to his manipulative ways w/ certain individuals I admittedly don't have any qualms over him manipulating), and Seol holding her ground was A+. When he recognizes their differences now and still likes her...this is growth imo. This is already a step up from the Jung who childishly deleted texts/acted cold and the Seol who let things slide. And Seol, girl, don't walk into a dang pole thinking about your boyfriend!

Can Seol realize the way she feels over In Ha is how Jung feels when she hangs w/ In Ho? Please? Bc this is the exact reversal I saw coming.

Jung and his dad. Jung knows his dad thinks he's strange, but did he ever truly get Jung any help? Give him affection? There's a huge issue here.

YG NEEDS to go. Seol's life is complicated enough. In Ho, I know it's well-intentioned and hilarious, but stop chasing him around like a kid and let Bo Ra and Eun Taek film incriminating evidence! Eun Taek being Jung's informant, love it! Date him already Bo Ra! Leading such a nice guy on is a bit much.

Jae Woo and In Ha are my new otp. I can actually see her ending up with her little peanut studying art and defending him.

Waiting two weeks to see Jung and Seol's reconciliation is going to be painful lol. Those particular scenes of them in ep. 9's preview and today's...The kiss. That hug. THEIR...

I don't think Jung ever got any help or guidance or anything truly constructive - it looks like his dad laid down constraints and did very little in the way of positive reinforcement, other than a sort of benign parenting style.

So poor Jung grew up aware that there's something off about him, following the rules as best he can, but never quite achieving a wholly intangible goal - because no one's ever outlined it for him, and how on earth do you achieve something that's never been explained?

Meeting unexplained expectations is seriously the worst feeling in the world cos you feel like no matter what you do, no matter what you say, it wouldn't make a difference cos you will NEVER "satisfy" that unspoken expectation. In that sense, Jung has a very child-like relationship with his father - I'm hoping as he grows in his relationship with Seol, he'll also be able to break away from THIS relationship with his Dad and learn that he doesn't have to keep trying to meet Dad's unrealistic expectations.

yeah i like how its clear that Jung doesnt know how to connect to his dad cuz his dad clearly has no idea who his child is and doesnt seem too bothered to find out. prob just found him kinda strange but since Jung doesnt cause trouble and gets good grades. he just left him to his own devices in most aspects of his life. u can def feel this distance between them, and its not as if the dad is evil or cray chaebol. which is what makes it so sad and real. lots of dad's are like that. esp ones that work alot. its no wonder he is more openly fond of the Baek siblings, cuz unlike Jung they are boisterous and emotional. He doesnt have to reach out to them cuz they already so on their own. but Jung is like a turtle, and it takes a certain kind of temperament to take care of a turtle vs say a more conventional pet like a dog. (I love dogs fyi)
there IS smth strange with Jung but i think the drama has made enough of a case so far that its less him being the kid from The Omen and more someone who is just processes life differently, and as such struggled to connect with ppl. and man, everything about him screams of a child that grew up with zero emotional guidance or investment from adults. its sad, he's doing fine in all aspects but the emotional one.
This is why I really really hope he can work out whatever issues he has with In Ho alrdy because they were good for each other I think. and its obv a case of hurt feelings more than anything else between them. gaaaah this drama. I JUST WANT TO HUG EVERYONE ;_; (well er not the gross ppl obv)

Yes! Totally agree. Also I don't think I realised until episode 9 that Jung was basically bullied as a child. Like I know he said people took advantage of him but I didn't realise just how bad it was until the pen episode. If he's been told by his Dad to behave, don't get angry, don't be stingy, then he actually can't even argue with kids like that who steal because they can. His only recourse is doing things sneakily. He's not allowed to lose his temper, because his Dad would be disappointed.

Shouldn't Dad be teaching how to deal with these users though? I mean if he's going to run a company one day why is he trying to teach Jung not to push for what he wants (ie not to have vision), but simply be taken advantage of all the time? I really just need Jung to lose his temper and vent all his frustrations out there. Get angry at his Dad, get angry at In Ho. So that they can then fix it and have a better relationship.

Yea, I've been wondering about that. Doesn't the dad seem too much of a pushover/being used with the advice he gives and how he has allowed In Ha and In Ho (to a certain extent) be spoiled? Or is he a hypocrite and a total shark off-screen during office hours?

I hate to be a damper since everyone's raving about the romantic elements here but..

Does anyone see Cheese in the Trap as social commentary on bullying in Confucian cultures? Granted, Min Soo and Young Gon seem to be exaggerated crazies but as someone who works in and studied in a westernized Confucian city, I have seen similar levels of unreasonable behaviour to people who just happen to stand above the crowd for being smarter, working harder or born better looking.

That's why a lot of people tend to conform to avoid these sorts of treatment - which just seems depressing.
How can a society progress if you're worried about not becoming a target all the time?

I wonder if any of the forums in Korea have conversations around this anyway?

0

When I read the webtoon, it made me really angry for Jung that his dad never once validated his feelings. It was always more about wanting Jung to do what is deemed proper, to take the higher ground etc etc - but in that process, he expected Jung to negate his feelings and rights. So this quiet, obedient and studious child who gets bullied and shouted down by other kids, including the Baek's - and his dad isn't saying - yes, you are right to feel angry and you have a right to express it, and here are the ways to do it healthily. Instead, he emphasises that he should simply "behave" in a way so as not to disappoint his father. It is hideously unfair and explains a lot about why Jung is the way he is.

0

It might be just me but I got total Bo Ra/Seol and In Ho/Jung parallels from that flashback. Jung reminded me a lot of Seol backing down because confrontation is more difficult and In Ho encouraging him to fight back reminded me of Bo Ra pushing Seol to fight back.

Then I thought it wasn't surprising that Jung saw a lot of himself in Seol the first few episodes.

His dad already infuriates me lol. I see him being like, "Okay you're weird BUT this can come in handy later on in business so I'm not going to address anything but I will check up on you all the time because I don't trust you."

0

In a weird way, drama Jung kinda reminds me of another fairly recent drama hero who was also the product of a benignly neglectful dad, brainier than his peers but disliked/distrusted most of them, and liked to pull strings and hatch plots using his superior social position and intellect.

(I'm talking about Kim Yeol from Sassy Go Go - the main difference being that Yeol at least had one true friend, and that friendship seems to have kept him anchored to the realm of normally-expressed human emotion, enough that he could recognise when his methods were wrong and not have serious trust/communication issues with his girlfriend)

0

Nice comparison. I was also thinking that Jung reminds me a bit of Bang Won.

0

@Dramapanda - I haven't seen all of SFD, but that is a really good comparison. (Yeol, Bang-won and Jung all have the same ruthless streak, just to different degrees and in Yeol's case, hugely tempered by the presence of Ha-joon in his life from a young age)

0

Very interesting comparison. I can totally see it. Kim Yeol did drive the second lead (i can't remember the character's name) almost to the point of an attempt at suicide. Any other normal person would have just confronted her or told everyone about her -- which would have been kinder.

Maybe its the age or the actor's dimples, but Kim Yeol somehow seemed less cold when he was doing nearly the same things that Jung is doing. Jung gives off a much darker vibe.

0

@aoiaheen - Yeol didn't drive Soo-ah to attempt suicide, that was because she almost killed him and was given no support by her family or school.

But he did mess with her mind a good deal by blackmailing her, which pushed her to some pretty dire actions in the course of trying to cover up after herself. And he recognised that and apologised for it later.

(Jung doesn't get his hands dirty, but he is perfectly capable of threatening to end someone he perceives as a threat to Seol - like the smarmy sunbae he rescued her from in the early ep, who was trying to take advantage of a drunk Seol. Jung outright threatened the guy's internship, which is something we normally don't see him do)

0

Yes! I've thought that too, Yoo Jung feels things a bit more deeply than Kim Yeol allowed himself to feel in the beginning. But both have that ability to recognise manipulations and both have fairly successful plans of action (whether good or bad).

YESSSSSSSSSS I'm not the only one who thought of it!

Yeol's emotional responses are far more readily humanising than Jung's (like potentially going postal at anyone who endangers Ha-joon or Yeon-doo), but both of them are extreme strategic thinkers who make scary adversaries, especially when someone they care for is threatened. And they both have that sense of just going through the motions when it comes to their current environments.

Hah... I knew you're a Brit. And yes, that'd be a great show I'd want to watch - Kim Yeol as some secret agent. He certainly has the charm for a James Bond type character.

0

@Dramapanda - lol I'm NOT a Brit, but I just finished reading a book involving lots of MI6 so I guess those spies are on my mind, ha.

Jung would make an A++ secret agent, but Crinkles on the game? Just kill me now.

0

Ah darn. :) )I think it was also cos you knew to call Alexander McQueen, "Lee".

Jung, I see more as a Harry or M type - apart from strategising in HQ, having to deal with diplomatic relations in crises, all while keeping a poker face.

Come on, I think Crinkles would easily charm his way in and out of a lot of tricksy situations.

0

@Dramapanda - the McQueen thing was just because I am a huge fangirl of his, one of the best moments of my life was when I first walked into the V&A's exhibition of his work last summer.

and when I said 'just kill me now', I meant it in a good way - Crinkles would make a fantastic spy if he wanted, but the cuteness would be too much to bear if he ever smiled.

0

@pogo

You declaring your non-britness has totally messed up my reading of your intonations! I shall just go back to thinking you come across Brit like cos that seemed fine before...

0

@Dramapanda - lol, is it because of the way I spell? I'm Indian, but was taught English using British-style spellings, so I can see how someone 'reading' me might think it was a native habit.

And my accent when I speak English is closer to British than American (though it is still most certainly not a Brit accent or even close), so you're not that far off the mark.

0

I can see it too..... but Kim Yeol isn't cold like Jung and he actually has genuine good feelings towards people other than Ha Joon and Yeon Doo by the end, his thinking is very strategic and manipulative of his enemies but unlike Jung he never manipulates anyone other than those he sees as enemies.

But if there was no Ha Joon in his life, he would probably be more like Jung from a young age. He has a friend, that is what saves him from being totally cold basted.

0

That's because Yeol was never a psychopath or lacking in empathy - he certainly cared about other people, though at the start he limited that caring to only one person and actively avoided getting involved in issues of right and wrong that he didn't see as personally affecting him. And he's not nearly as cold as Jung (who I don't believe is a psychopath either).

0

Istg, I was just getting over SGG and I've finally caught up with CITT - but then I see your comments and I just miss it so badly. Haha. I think I'm gonna go and open up my SGG files after this.

But you made a good point. I don't know what really went down bw Jung & In Ho, but if he really did cause those bullies to hurt his hand / did nothing to help (from the little glimpses of flashbacks we get), that would be the stark difference between them. Yeol uses his social status and brains very well and can surely be manipulative and scary, yet he's the person to really appreciate the people he has around and we see the only moments he does crack from his cool headed guy demeanor is when he gets defensive about the ones he loves.

0

Required fields are marked *

yeah, the thing with Yeol is that his friendship with Ha-joon is the key to his character - it basically informed the entire premise of the show and his role in it, as well as his potential to open up to other people (a huge part of the reason why he's able to adopt the rest of the Real King gang as 'his' is because he already knows what true friendship looks like, and has never had his trust in Ha-joon shaken the way I assume Jung and In-ho have. I mean, even when he caught his best friend backhugging his girlfriend, he gives him the space to deal with it in his own way instead of flinging accusations right at the scene or distrusting Ha-joon afterwards - that's some solid bro-ness, right there)

And fwiw, Yeol's dad was emotionally neglectful, but doesn't appear to have placed as heavy a weight on his expectations and behaviour, as Jung's dad seems to have. I think that explains a lot about the difference between the two characters, too.

0

@pogo True, Yeol may have not gotten the love and care from his parents; but along with that he also did not receive much pressure or so. Expectations of perfection can easily ruin a child and make them more distant with others, that's for sure.

Maybe, if SGG's little villain Soo Ah had the capability to think strategically and manipulate people the way Yeol did (and had gotten away with the things that she did) - she'd have grown up to be a Jung-like person lol. A person who tries not to let their guards down by getting emotionally attached to friends and shove emotions such as guilt and remorse away in order to keep striving for "perfection". (Un)fortunately she didn't have the capacity to think smart/tricky and remain calm in real life situations.

0

The funny thing about Soo-ah is that she's actually very emotional, despite trying to suppress or ignore her own feelings. If she was actually colder (she tries to be, but isn't), and if her initial facade of niceness had stayed up, she'd be more Jung-like, but Jung is on another level.

Though I can certainly see the threads in common - both have overbearing parents who expect a lot out of them and don't listen to a word they say. Though I have more hope for Jung, because he at least seems to resent his father a little for boxing him into the model of a perfect boy and always finding him lacking despite Jung's best efforts.

Everyone before was ready to label Jung a control freak because he didn't like In Ho and Seoul's relationship and made that clear. But now the tables have turned and Seoul is really struggling with uncertainty about Jung and In Ha. Someone mentioned that it makes Seoul more human that she is flawed, and this shows it. But I also hope that it helps her see Jung's point of view on her relationship with In Ho. I do enjoy Seoul and In Ho's interactions though, and like you, I want the drama to leave them platonic, cause that's okay too.

As for Jung, in one way I feel like he's grown very little, especially when compared to In Ho and Seoul's growth. But at the same time, we only have other character's perspectives of him. So it makes me think, has he grown as much as they have, but we just don't see it because it's everyone else's perspective we're getting? The exploration of Jung thus far has only been tiny snippets. But those snippets seem to be getting longer and longer each episode. I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm surprised that Seol still question Jung and Inha relationship when there're already so many times both Jung, Inho, even Inha herself, state that they're only childhood friend. Usually a party is jealous because they keep their suspiscion to themselve and never asked it. But its not the case here. Seol get to comfirm it so many times already. When I never questioned Seol suspiscion of Jung before, this part of Seol mistrust in Jung disturb me.

@Vini maybe it's just because she thinks Inha is very pretty and they seem very close...and she's just jealous, period. HAH. Jealousy can be unreasonable, and isn't necessarily 100% always linked to trust. Humans are complex creatures, and can feel emotions that pull them apart in different ways.

Well she already know that they really are close. She know Jung and Baek sibling are friend since childhood. She even know the bad blood between Jung and Inho is because they're really close before.
Knowing the usual cool headed Seol and how she is thinking about Jung I don't understand how she could be THAT jealous.

0

@Vini It's hard to explain but I totally get her though. Like I said sometimes jealousy just happens, and it doesn't matter even if cognitively a person recognises that the jealousy is ridiculous and unwarranted and even when the person has received assurances that it means nothing. Sigh. Trust me, this does happen.

0

Yeah, I think it ties into her insecurities. She thinks InHa is very pretty and glamorous and she probably compares herself to InHa (without fully understanding that she is very pretty to Jung and what her true worth is to Jung.)

When Jung first asked her to have relationship, it cracked me up that she was so oblivious. She said I don't know why you would ask that, as if it came as a thunderbolt? And he replied, do you really not know why? Like he is astounded.

And in her inner dialogue when she goes upstairs, she said he's never shown any signs up to now? Huh? What about all that following her around and asking her to eat with him and giving her help and showing up in her classes, etc, etc.?

I've been told Im oblivious to when men like me but even I would see that as a pursuit.

0

I see growth in Jung but it's mostly subtle things. Him actually respecting Seol's need for space while waiting for her is a big step imo. Jung from the first few episodes would be back to cold. He recognizes the differences between him and Seol and still likes her for those differences, which is also I think a big deal to him since much of his reasoning for liking her was her being similar. This is most likely the first time he's gone out of his way to care for a person (he cared for In Ho imo but they grew up together) and attempt to show it, so this for me is his growth.

I think we want and expect him to reform his manipulative ways, and I don't really see that happening. It seems to come to him instinctively now. And if you've been used your whole life, told you're strange, and to repress any negative emotion...well...

Dark Seol, hehe. Yeah, she was denying too much of her own needs to her own detriment and to the detriment of those around her (ie they were becoming used to and feeling entitled to her niceness rather than grateful).

I agree that he is changing but it seems so incrementally slow. But what you said makes sense; it's hard to change Overnight, if possible at all.

I want Seol to have a bigger impact on him right away right now but I also don't want her to be a Morality Chain in the classic trope where he, the anti-hero, is good only because of her and if anything were to happen to her or threaten his relationship with her, he goes full villain.

I want to see him change for real (though not entirely) and not just modify his behavior to fit, I guess. In that way, the slow progress is encouraging in that he's not just faking it or forcing it but actually considering. I hope.

I'm not looking to have Jung change honestly. For me, all I really want is that he considers the effect his actions has on people and not just think in that 'an eye for an eye' brand of justice. We're all so proud of Seoul for standing up for herself. I see what Jung has been doing as just that - standing up for himself. And like you say, all his life he's been told certain things so his current actions are based on that. If can't get mad openly and defend himself openly he just has to stay cold and manipulate on the sly. It works.

The thing about Jung--and this could be my naive interpretation of him--is that I feel he'd be so much less manipulative if people stayed in their own lane. So many of the characters he's burned come right back to him to some degree or end up messing with him again like THIS TIME they'll get him or something. Leave him alone!!! That is literally all this dude wants 99% of the time, and seeing the majority of the characters we've been introduced to, I get why he wants to be left alone.

I feel like Jung should invest in a Do Not Disturb sign and wear it around his neck.

But yeah I mean...if we'd seen the flashback in episode 9 and his drunk pushover confession to Seol earlier on (around the time he opened up to Seol in episode 6), would people root for Jung a bit more? Because here we are, cheering for Seol taking down the people making her life hell when it really seems like that's exactly why Jung learned to manipulate so well, especially since it seems like he never felt free enough or allowed to emote properly. And to his lack of empathy...if his feelings were invalidated a lot growing up, then he's not going to consider or validate other people's feelings imo. It still doesn't justify his actions but it makes him more understandable if this is the case.

0

I agree with you. Also, aside from that, I would want to see Jung be able to realize that there are still people left in the world he can turn to, confide in and trust. I think that after all that he has experienced, even with the people whom he trusted the most, he has resolved to build a wall around him so as not to get hurt again, thinking that everyone is all the same- with bad intentions. I want him to be genuinely happy, to be able to look at the world with optimism and I hope Seol can help him.

0

Yes, +1 to Dark!Seol! Actually you kinda see how she and Jung are similar but different - Seol plotted with her besties to collect evidence to use against Young Gon for a police report...and er, Jung collects evidence...but he doesn't bother with the police report... To be honest, I was a little irritated with Inho at that point, because, seriously didn't he learn from that FIRST TIME already that they were trying to collect evidence?! Argh!!

And also +1 to Seol realizing how she feels about Jung + Inha = how Jung feels about her + Inho. Actually, erm... at least Jung makes it a point to not hang out now with Inha...whereas Inho appears EVERYWHERE with Seol, seriously. I don't actually have a problem with their friendship per se, but, like, if your boyfriend already shows signs of discomfort with your close relationship with another man, then, maybe it would be a good idea to try and keep some distance? Argh but the flip side to that argument is that it's precisely cos she has NO romantic feelings that she doesn't even see this as a problem. This is an issue with no actual win! ARGH.

The previews are killing me cos NO CITT. FOR. TWO. WHOLE. WEEKS.

I know, they made sure the wait would be so not fun with those previews! I was like HOW DARE U TROLL ME after seeing episode 9's preview, since I knew their reconciliation wasn't happening in this episode.

Yeah In Ho...he's a character that I REALLY REALLY like but I don't get why people rally for so easily (I mean...yes I do...but I won't go there) when whenever we get a glimpse of him beyond those So Cute!!! moments with Seol...he's very impulsive and thoughtless in regards to the entire situation. Jung's thoughtless out of indifference and wanting to be left alone...In Ho just doesn't think or rationalize imo. Both guys are actually very childish, they just display it different ways lol. I wanting to drag In Ho away that entire scene because they had it covered and he caused MORE issues. Did he really think Seol wouldn't get fired after YG got HIM fired?!

And that's a great point that Seol doesn't see the issue because that's how much she friend-zoned In Ho...but she's gotta trust her boyfriend with this situation. She's correct in thinking this is one thing he wouldn't lie about.

I think Seul said she was envious of Joon - Joon was the favored child, a boy at that, so she has always been jealous of him (and not Joo Yeon, the girl who used to follow Jung around). Also logically Seul should have no reason to envy Joo Yeon, and indeed showed no envy towards Joo Yeon.

Yeah, I think the translation I watched said Joon, though it could have been wrong. That would make more sense to me through because of what you stated. Also because I remember her implying (or stating, I can't remember) that she was jealous of Joon during that scene when Jung stayed overnight at her place. Jung did the same regarding Inho too and it seems that their feelings will come to the surface soon.

This episode is a treat for Inho followers. I'm not a fan of Inho but I thought he was really, really cute in this episode. Him crushing on Sul was so adorable! His character is really lovable although he can be a jerk and really knows how to pull the strings when it comes to Jung. I am still for Sul and Jung because I am positive that Jung has fallen deeply in love with Sul and it's slowly changing him. I find it really romantic. I'm interested to see how Inha will handle OYG. Something is up:)

I personally hated the confrontation scene between Sul and Minsoo. It became a live entertainment.

I really need to know more about Jung. It's episode 10 already and I am still confused with his character. Right now, my heart aches for Inho for discovering his true feelings for Sul. If these characters are really meant to make you feel this way then I guess, the writer and the actors are doing so great with their interpretation. I have a mixed love and hate for Jung as of this point. As for Sul, she's getting a bit too close to Inho. I know that her only intention is to help Inho but if you have a boyfriend who gets jealous over this, shouldn't you be making a little distance? I'm not saying break the friendship but the closeness shown between Inho and Sul makes it an easy entry for misunderstandings especially when the friend and the boyfriend are not in good terms. I don't expect Inho to put a distance since we all know he's doing this on purpose. Sul really warms up more with Inho and this is the reason why ships are sailing in a different direction...except mine.

I hope this doesn't end in a love triangle. For now, I see Inho's one sided love for Sul and Jung/Sul is the real deal. But who knows what the writer is thinking. The reason why I wouldn't want Inho and Sul to be together in the end is because this will most likely make Jung more messed up and end up a villain. I would really, really hate to see that.

I want to see more PHJ in the coming episodes. He rocks pink!

The whole in ho shipping frankly irritates me since there was no romantic leanings with in ho in the webtoon. Why must there be two guys?! I'm so sick of love triangles in k dramas. I hope Seol never considers him and keeps seeing him like a friend.
I don't understand the whole ganging up on Jung. Frankly, besides the whole turning the stalker on Seol (which I don't even know why he's taking responsibility for that since he never explicitly asked him to stalk her and in ha did most of the damage) I don't see anything Jung has done wrong. Everyone Jung has gotten back at frankly deserved it and I loved how he handled the min soo case.
I'm frankly tired of Seol doubting him all the time. You get a picture of him and in ha and even though in ho has told you a lot that they never dated you still think the worst.
I'm actually quite tired of Seol as a character, I honestly would never even want to date someone who always thinks the worst of me.

I really agree with this entire comment! If Seol ~suddenly~ is attracted to In Ho and wavers in a few episodes, I'll roll my eyes. The girl was literally about to run into a pole thinking about Jung when In Ho was right beside her. If I loved In Ho the most, I wouldn't want him with Seol just based on that. She's not even thinking of him in a remotely romantic way.

Jung is the epitome of an antihero but why is anyone "scared" of what he might do if Seol breaks his heart??? Why? He's never been abusive towards her. And honestly, considering his dad already, no wonder Jung is so messed up. How you're raised plays a huge part in your development, so...(if the drama makes me eat my words and he ends up randomly being some villain, ah well...)

I get where Seol is coming from, but she's right when she tells herself she knows she misinterprets things when it comes to Jung. As does some of the audience, imo. You'd think this guy was two seconds away from pulling a Phantom to Seol's Christine with how some people view him. He approached her once the entire episode after the back hug and sent her a text asking about school. Wow. So dangerous.

Agree to both of you. I feel a little when I saw the preview, In Ho sees Seol in tears running towards Jung and he seems so broken hearted. But I care more on how Jung stand there look as hurt as Seol when he sees tears down her cheek. He understands her, and the way they both run towards each other. I think it's something very private that only them can understand. It's their private space that In Ho can't get in to.

Lol are we allowed to discuss previews here? If so, I think they mashed up the previews for the next few episodes because there are things that happened in Ep 10 that were "previewed" like 2 or 3 episodes ago and there are things that happened in Ep 9 preview that hasn't happened in Ep 10.

Sigh, sometimes I appreciate that the show is pre-produced and I love having the previews...and then sometimes, like when the show might be pre-empted for new year celebrations, I'm like, WHY?! WHY did they show me this preview?! Now, HOW am I supposed to wait 2 weeks for the next episode?!

...I foresee a lot of hanging out on this thread over the next couple of weeks...sigh...

Ah sorry if we can't discuss preview. I agree with you, they do messed up previews. The part where In Ha beat fake Seol was on ep. 7 preview, it didn't happen til ep 9. And the bed scene was in ep 9 preview. Did we see any bed scene on ep. 10? Nope! But, I will stop talking of previews if it against DB's rule.

0

@ Dani, nah no worries, I don't actually think there's a strict policy? Usually in discussing previews though, people try to avoid putting in spoilers in case other folks haven't seen it etc., so we end up making vague remarks like "OMG the preview is killing me!" etc. (which, by the way, they ARE).

I'm all for mixing the scenes up in the previews honestly. Keeps us guessing! And I find it very aligned to the way the entire drama has been shown actually (they show us flashes and then they subvert it). I like that the previews really are teasers that don't show us the entire picture until the entire episode plays out. The tone becomes slightly different and you have a deeper understanding when the full episode plays.

I think people afraid about what will happen to Jung if Seol break his heart, people afraid that Jung will be more damaged and become more closed off fo the world. Not that he will harm Seol.

Yeah, I've seen far too many comments fearing Jung will do something terrible to Seol and she should run now and not give him a chance as he is a"sociopath."

It's pretty upsetting as I feel he is being judged and written off, not for his actual actions to Seol, but for his difference.

0

Yep, and I've seen nothing that truly indicates he'd hurt her (yet, at least, but hopefully not ever).

0

LOL @ your "so dangerous" comment haha! Word. Totally!

And please, I will throw bricks at Drama if they suddenly make Seol "waver" in her feelings towards Inho and see him as more than a friend; from a dramatic narrative POV given that we're more than halfway into the story, I feel like this would be an unnecessary move to add tension. As it is, the fact that they are friends is more than enough to irritate Jung, just like how proof of how close Jung and Inha used to be is enough to bother Seol.

LOL! Agree with both your comments! And I find it funny that while people sneer at Jung for trying to set up these crazy people who have done him (and his loved ones) harm, they cheer on Seol-Bora-Euntaek for taking matters into their hands to set up Young Gon. Isn't it kinda the same? Luring the crazy one so they'll be able to collect evidence against him for future use. Hmm.. But yes, becuase it's Seol, it's not as evil as when Jung does it haha.

Also, I hope that Seol realizes why Jung could be jealous with her closeness with In Ho. Because she is going though the same thing, getting jealous of In Ha. And she hasn't even seen them together with her own eyes but just pics and from what other people have said (Young Gon for pete's sake!). Even after Jung has repeatedly told her they were lies. My heart hurts for them but maybe they really need this time to examine everything. And I appreciate Jung for giving her the space she wants but still looking out for her.

There always seems to be a double standard when it's Jung, almost like some expect him to suddenly be a saint and when he isn't, talk about how scary or creepy or wrong he is lol. Or better, diagnose him. Seol is starting to call him out now, so it's not like he's getting by with stuff on her front! I think she's beginning to understand him though, which might rub some viewers the wrong way. They want Jung either redeemed or cast aside as a love interest in favor of who they perceive as the better choice. Seol accepting Jung and possibly loving who he is, flaws and all, might be hard to be okay with.

I think Seol is ending up alone and happy tbh, but this couple has been such a refreshing, realistically flawed one and I love it. I'm rooting for them.

Yes, the double standard. It's swoony when In Ho tries to beat up Young Gon to protect Seol but it's is evil when Jung sets up ways to take down Min soo and the other crazies (complete with creepy, suspenseful music) lol. Both boys are concerned for her but, as we've seen even the flashbacks, they have different ways of going about it. And I believe that their backgrounds may have alot to do with it too. Jung fights in the best way he knows high and it isn't through fisticuffs.

0

I've been trying to figure out why ppl find him so scary, "creepy", easy to hate....these are my list of possibilities, though in no way complete:

1. The creepy background music and etc plays on us
2. Anyone who manipulates is the devil incarnate
3. Ditto for dual personality
4. Being "cold" means you have no feelings and/or empathy
5. Some ppl just find intelligence scary
6. "He's a rich bastard," despite being generous to a fault. I hate this one, lol. Sure he can afford it but yknow what, lots just buy a 5k shirt rather than treat a bunch of classmates.

7. He was mean to Seol/Inho
8. He's not normal :(
9. He's hard to read and therefore must be hiding something.
10. WHO NEEDS A REASON?

0

I think the last two episodes have proven that he would not hurt Seoul. She did break his heart. The last episode his face as she walked away after telling him they need a break - was that not heart broken? And yet, did he hurt her? No. He helped her get rid of some of the frustration in her life (Min Soo), and is working on the other one (Young-gon). He also commissioned spy Eun Taek, lol. We may not like his methods, but his sincerity isn't any less than say In Ho's who helps her 'out in the open.' They both help her, just in different ways. It's interesting how we deem Jung's methods to be so unacceptable and reprehensible. Since when is cunning and subversion so much less scary than outright violence?

I just had a thought -I think the one that's in any real Jung Justice danger if he and Seoul should break is In Ho.He's been the main point of contention in the relationship from Jung's side. If Seoul breaks off with him, Jung might see it as In Ho's fault. That would definitively end their relationship, which would be a pity because their bromance is so fun to watch.

No!!!!! Not the bromance!

0

Haha, I guess this must be one of those 'to each his own' aspects, because one of the things that peeves me the most in dramas in general is that the female lead is never allowed to waver in her romantic pursuits. Love triangles are so pointless in general in dramas (and yet so prevalent) because there's never any doubt as to what the endgame will be. Not only that, most of them are extremely one-sided, because there's no possibility of the female lead being attracted to the male second lead, regardless of what their relationship is like.

I honestly find this trope incredibly tiring, especially when it deals with high school/college age people. The way I see it, Seol was pretty suddenly attracted to Jung, and that too when she was specifically disinclined to even like him, which, in my opinion, is extremely natural and human. Part of her attraction stemmed from the fact that he liked her, which confused her and attracted her, which also I see as incredibly natural. So were she to change her mind at any point and be attracted to Inho, I wouldn't consider that strange at all. She's only twenty, this is just her first boyfriend. Which is something that I appreciated about Reply 1988, regardless of how disappointing it may have been. That it acknowledged that feelings aren't always static, your first love doesn't HAVE to be your last. Just because you're wildly into someone at one point in your life, doesn't mean you can never feel the same way about anyone else ever again, even a year, a month later. Even the boys you've known forever and never seen in a romantic light, can suddenly make your heart beat faster one day, just like that, and nobody knows why, because attraction can be such a mystery. We have dramas where best friends get together even thirty years later, despite having been right there in front of each other for those thirty years. Love is so often just timing, what you want from a relationship at various stages in your life can keep changing.

I feel like drama-runners are so often afraid that their female characters will be hated for 'leading on' the second leads, were they to show any kind of reciprocation at all, that they never explore how complex human relations can be or even a frisson of mutual attraction between them (that's not just CIIT, it's pretty much every drama ever.) They stay in the 'safe zone' of absolutely unrequited love, so that the female lead is ~blameless and so that the lead love story is elevated because they never once wavered despite all odds. I find this trope really standard though, and regardless of whether I ship the OTP or not, I'm always happy when the female leads' other relationships are confusing, because I find that more realistic and it so rarely ever happens in dramas.

@Zoe +1 on relationships is all about timing.

Re: your other comment about female leads not having feelings for second lead - I actually wish they would just stop featuring love triangles cos those exhaust me. Whether it is realistic to have feelings towards multiple people at the same time I think depends on the nature of your relationship with them and the context in which these feelings are developing. I don't deny it is possible for some, but for others it is also perfectly okay to have a relationship work out great (I have known many folks who have married their first girl/boyfriends and so far so good...keeping fingers crossed for the rest of their lives...). But frankly I'd like to keep relationships between two people because it's difficult enough to reconcile two different values systems and way of living as it is and it is really not necessary to add further romantic complication by putting in competition. I never quite understood it, like, what this woman has never had a boyfriend for x number of years and all of a sudden like 3 or 4 guys are interested in her? What's up with that?

I see your point and think it's a valid one! I just don't think a love triangle was right for this drama. They had a wonderful opportunity to rise above the love triangle trope and have Seol and In Ho's relationship remain platonic without making In Ho's crush so dang obvious (In Ho has enough going on in his life, why should I be coerced into feeling bad that he might not get the girl?). I actually don't think Seol's attraction to Jung stems from him liking her as she's already had a weird guy following her around saying how much he likes her (YG) and she remained disgusted. There's always been a weird fixation between the two and once Seol realized there was more to Jung than she initially judged, she was caught in the trap. And I root for them, but I see Seol ending up alone romantically at this point.

Both In Ho and Seol so clearly need their siblings, but neither of their siblings are capable of being actual emotional support for anything they're going through. They fit that role so well (so naturally!!) for each other that it felt a little wrong to have over-the-top blushing and heart palpitations thrown at us, no matter how cute or funny.

I've said I wish I could ship them, but within context of this drama, I really can't. Seol suddenly wavering in her feelings by liking In Ho (after alllllll the issues the established couple have gone through anyway) will not feel organic to me, it'll feel like it's forced this late in the game. If In Ho's feelings were going to be an actual game-changer later on for Seol, this realization of his crush should have happened earlier imo. In Ho and Seol being seen as love interests complicates the storyline unnecessarily while possibly reducing In Ho and Jung's interactions to "the girl." Considering we don't even know their full past yet, that kinda makes me sad.

I'm probably in the minority but Today for the first time i was feeling bleh! about an episode. It was more of a filler. Too many crazies around and too much time being spent on them. Minsoo's pain/breakdown did not really connect with me- Weak acting perhaps?

Fav scenes
- jung and his dad. He is lonely, crushing under expectations but represses it all and doesn't lash out which leads to his current attitude issues

- In-ho's absolutely cute "weaponry" gift to seol. He got her everything! Arming her for war!

- Seol basically telling Jung that he has to walk too. Can't keep standing and expect her to come to him. Go Girl!

.... I get that keeping Jung's screen time less is a way of story telling to keep his character mysterious(?). But honestly if you keep the most intriguing character of the show to a bare minimum, i start losing interest. Lets weed out some of the loonies and focus on the lead.

Ironic that Jung can recognize pent-up anger and frustration in Seol and manipulates her into venting via Min Soo, but Jung himself rarely-if-ever lets loose.

I think the closest we've seen him vent is when he corners TA Heo and gets a little shouty. He controlled himself in front of In Ha, he was scarily focused with Pervert Blonde, and even when he reads the text messages he just throws the phone in the sink. I'm not sure Jung has ever really let go, especially if his dad's been urging him to control his emotions his entire life.

yeah, the nature of the responses is so different, I remember being shocked last ep that he actually lost it a little with In-ha because while Jung is perfectly capable of acting on feelings of anger (the alleyway beatdown to the pervert), he doesn't usually show the emotional response to the target of his anger.

With TA Heo and In-ha, he lost it to a degree we don't see him do with other people (and even the irritation In-ho provokes out of him is something he usually keeps carefully suppressed).

Interesting both of those times happened AFTER he had an argument/breakup(ish) with seol. The idea of losing her perhaps ?

I'm not claiming that he has this crazy everlasting soulmates feeling for seol. More like, after a very very long time he genuinely likes someone and wants to hold on to that. Except that he feels he is getting screwed over by ppl who he has utmost contempt for.

Good point - Jung panics when he thinks someone external has damaged his relationship with Seol. Though only in limited areas; he seems to think he can control Young Gon well enough not to worry.

He does tip his hand with In Ho, though. Clearly he is nervous having In Ho so near Seol.

0

oooh that's pretty spot-on. Though he seems to as Miranda says, only lose it when he perceives someone as an actual threat to his relationship with Seol - Young-gon himself 's no real threat but In-ha is far more of a loose cannon.

0

"He does tip his hand with In Ho, though. Clearly he is nervous having In Ho so near Seol."

Somehow i feel that jung's issue with inho-seol is not simply petty jealousy. Remember hung-seol conversation on his night over at her place - that some people get love easily.

In-ho is adorable and he probably got a lot of love/attention from dad while jung was steadily sidelined. He is scared history will repeat itself ?

0

@bips99 - that's exactly it - In-ho's closeness to Seol is causing Jung to get insecure precisely BECAUSE In-ho's not only got an instant comfort level with Seol that he himself lacked, but that comfort level is a result of In-ho being (in Jung's perception) more easily/naturally lovable than he himself is.

He know perfectly well that Seol isn't romantically interested in In-ho, but he does perceive In-ho's interest in Seol, which makes him a threat in a way that, say, Eun-taek will never be.

0

@bips99, good callback - I think you're right, In Ho is probably the closest person to Jung who just automatically gets love.

When you think of how easily In Ho has integrated himself not just into Seol's life, but into her friends and her family, that must completely bewilder Jung. I'm thinking particularly of how he chases after Seol with an umbrella, only to find In Ho walking down the street in between Jun and Seol, his arms wrapped around their shoulders and the umbrella squarely centered over his head.

From Jung's point of view, how is it that In Ho so effortlessly makes himself part of their unit? It was a matter of minutes between Seol dashing into the rain disturbed and In Ho magically getting her under his arm laughing. Jung would never be able to do that so quickly, never mind coopting her brother into the bargain.

The saddest thing is that In Ho probably took that exact pose with Jung and In Ha in the past. Without In Ha as the bridge, Jung loses all connection with that sort of easy familiarity.

0

@bips99

Oh, good observation. For someone like Jung, it's easy to win admiration and respect, but hard for people to get close. He must get envious of In-Ho's naturally warm personality that creates easy rapport with people.

0

we've already seen seol hit her breaking point. while i think jung has been pushed to the edge of the rage cliff a few times, i dont think he's fully fallen off it yet. I...would love to see him breakdown and really just...be emotional. even for a bit. whether its in tears or rage or pure giggly carefree laughter. i'm here4it. esp if it involves getting rid of taht eyesore Youngon for GOOD or finally being honest with In Ho so they can patch things up already! I think In Ho wants that too and he's almost there in being mature enough to try again but jung needs to meet him half way. just like what seol said to him, its not right if she has to walk the full way to him.

With regards to Jung's dad, I get the sense that this has happened before? That his dad asked people to report back to him regarding Jung's activities. Maybe eventually Jung found out which resulted to him seemingly always on his best behavior but then finding ways to stealthily get back at people who wronged him.

Thats actually a very interesting theory. Makes sense. Dad having (say) the housekeeper reporting about Jung.

Considering how both the baek twins don't have a shred of discipline in them, I think its fair to assume that they got to do anything they ever wanted while jung was reprimanded bec he is the 'heir'.

So he probably got to see them getting rewarded for bad behaviour while he was punished bec his good wasn't good enough

oh i love that theory too. there's no question that he was not a present father in jung's life, which is a big part of the issue. and are we ever gonna hear about Jung's momma? did she die very early on or divorce or wat?

I really want him to learn how to be a Real Boy cuz i think there's def a good heart in there, he is just repressed as hell and deals with his complications by using his sharp and logical mind. tbh i think in the case of Seol he should start being more vocal and present rather than scheming cuz half the time it backfires on him OR seol gets the blowback from his actions. we'll see.
tho tbh at this point, idec what he does to YG i just want his ass gooooone.

Aww, yes, I think Jung needs to learn how to communicate and express himself better, especially with Seol. I shudder to think of all the repressed feelings bottled up inside him with no one to confide to. Who knows, when they do make up, they might even work together to take down YG! Haha!

Regarding his relationship with his dad, I'm liking how we are getting bits and pieces of his past. We get to slowly understand him and see where he's coming from. It's all exciting.

And how Inho said in the school flashback that Jung can fight, it's okay I won't tell your Dad. Dad is so nervous of his son that he has ppl report on him?

Or his considers having the housekeeper et al report Jung's activities to him as being a good dad.

He made time in his busy schedule to listen to what his son has been getting up too and probably made sure to eat a meal with Jung once a week. Job done, father of the year award received, and the boy is perfectly fine! Not really but CEO Dad will pretend otherwise, no need to send the boy to a therapist or anything weak like that.

And two boisterous kids make it very easy to overlook the quiet one.

Ooh, good catch! I wonder if In Ho said something to the dad against Jung in retaliation to his misunderstanding about the hand accident? Which then resulted in Jung getting mad at him? Lol, so much speculation about this and I'm sure we'll only get the full answer near the end of the show! Haha!

...did Jung start to feel like he was being spied on instead of in an actual friendship with In Ho?

Because then everything would make a wholeeee lot of sense and the dad comes out even worse because rather than taking them into his care out of affection, Jung's dad was merely using the Baek siblings at the end of the day.

Does Jung's dad realize counseling and therapy are easier??? Or???

Heh. Soonkki is a clever writer. Respect. I'm really pulling for a satisfying end, no matter who Seol chooses.

0

ooooo .... that would be amazing! ... Imagine dad having Inho (jung's best friend) report on him. That would really explain why jung gets this look of absolute cold anger whenever he sees the twins. And that explains his extreme mistrust of ppl. If you can't trust your friends of 10 years who can you trust ?

0

I love this theory. And as you guys here have said, maybe not just In Ho, but even In Ha, was in on the dad's spying game. That would be really twisted. Unless, something also gave him great cause to be that wary of Jung? It would be so sad if after everyting, we find out that it was all a misunderstanding or the parents not really communicating properly with their children which resulted to years of animosity between them. Maybe I can also hope for healing between Jung and his dad? Hehe.

0

Exactly. Now, can we go back to ep 5 I think where Jung and Inho are bring home a drunk Seol. Inho asks Jung if he doesn't have anything to be sorry at him about. Jung turns that on Inho and says, "and you?" Then Inho gets uncharacteristicly quiet and drops the subject. Now let's go back to ep 9 flashback and look at the genuine care and trust between Jung and Inho (man they were planning to be a part of each other's lives 10 years from now ?) then the lines of "I won't tell your father" and Jung always being envious of their allowance to be free and his constant questioning of dad his approval of things. But what really stood out to me are the siblings assurance to Jung that it's fine and he should do what he wants.

Jung then for the first time has friends (so he thinks) who genuinely care about him, don't find him strange, accept him, and for once don't really have "ties" to his father. They are his people. He was willing accepting being a pushover and following dads regulations because he had his people. People on his side (you're not strange they are comment from Inho) who once in a while allow him to be free and join in without care of fear (fireworks scene). What kind of situation or betrayal would have had to occur for Jung not only to push aside and reject these people so coldly but also adopt an attitude of indifference, manipulation, cunning, to interact with and deal with people?

Jung was a messed up kid who needed psychological help but did not receive that. Nor did he receive the support, help, and guidance at home that he needed. Jung learned to imitate the world that surrounds him and still surrounds him today. That world is filled with thieves, liars, manipulator a, "victims" etc, and Jung is doing the same now with more intellect and fineness. He's playing their game better than they played it or him. Now the thing is who played him to such a degree (and it must have hurt like hell) that his chosen to cope and deal the way that he is.

"You're being sincere with me right?" "You really do like me right?" "Everyone always got close to me to use me for something". We've only seen two people that really got close to Jung, the Baek siblings.

Soel's inter-monologue in this episode definitely shows that she only likes Jung but at the same time In Ho being there with her all through this episode is just too adorable. In Ho has grown so much from the 1st episode and I like how Soel's hard work diffused to him. I can't help but root for In Ho to get what he loves but also I love Soel and want her to be happy as well. I am so doomed:-(

This show might become my favorite K-drama ever, and not just because of its crack vibe! The characters are so refreshingly layered.

I really enjoyed this episode, and seeing the growth of In-ho. I was disappointed though, that this episode didn't show much of Jung. His charter is so interesting and so layered. I'm practically aching for him to grow and realize his mistakes. How do you instill empathy in a person? How is this show going to showcase that? I hope nothing about his development is glossed over. I still have hope for him as a person.

This show is remarkable in that it makes you care more about the characters well-being than you do about them finding love (although I do love the romance). For me, I just want them all to be happy and mature through their shared experiences.

"How do you instill empathy in a person?"

This is such a good question, and I honestly wonder if it's possible.

My fear is that the show will use Seol as the conduit for Jung's transformation into an empathetic human being. I really hope that it doesn't do that. I really don't feel comfortable with a lot of the sentiment floating around that maybe Seol can "change" Jung and "help him be a better person". I feel like those are the kinds of beliefs that lead to abusive relationship dynamics, where the abused person keeps thinking that if they just keep trying, they can "fix" or "save" the abuser.

I'm not saying that Jung is abusing Seol. But it seems to me that a lot of the appeal of their relationship is that she could be the one thing that "saves" him, that transfroms him from an unfeeling cyborg into a loving man. And that's just....not realistic. That's not how life works. You cannot love someone enough to change him from a manipulative, controlling person into a good, kind one. A lot of media tells us that we can, but that media is wrong, and it influences a lot of people to stay in abusive relationships.

Loveeed this episode! So much happening! And as much as I love and adore the adorable Inho, I'm still so intrigued with Jung. I think a lot of people (and viewers) judge and misunderstand him--especially with the darker background music that plays with his scenes. I try not to get distracted by that though and look at his actions objectively. It doesn't help that he's being compared to Inho, who is very charismatic and a ball of sunshine who wears his heart on his sleeve. Jung has a different way of dealing with his emotions and frankly, they're quite effective without causing too much attention to him. I feel like he's had reason to do what he does. It really irks me when viewers say they think he's creepy or scary when they've obviously felt great about the result of some of his more strategic ways of dealing with people (ex: Minsoo). It felt damn good to see Minsoo fall in all of her lies. The catty girl inside me would've probably done the same and I don't blame Jung one bit for doing it the way he did. Minsoo seemed like she was going to get worse and worse unless someone stopped her before something even bigger happens.

I think there is still a lot to Jung that we don't know about and I'm eager to hear/see the whole story before calling him creepy or just vindictive and manipulative. The webtoon pointed this out more, but Jung and Seol actually are more similar than Seol thinks. Jung and Inho are actually quite similar too. The drama has explored more of Inho's side for now, but I think the tide will change a bit in future episodes as we get to see more of Jung's growth.

Anyway, it seems like Lunar New Year will be preventing us from seeing the episodes next week... T_T I feel like we haven't seen Jung a lot at all in this episode so I'm excited for the Jung-Seol reunion later! <3

Personally, I don't really like Jung…I just don't really see the affection he has for Seol. Like even during their cute happy moments, I'm half waiting for some nefarious look or action from him. I can't believe she is going to forgive him for the stalker thing. Thats just wrong, no matter what.

I much prefer In-ho's more direct and blunt ways. His cute friendship with Seol could make for a great relationship basis. Ah, what could have been…

I agree with you about Jung, I can't feel the emotions I usually have when the male lead falls in love with the female lead. I honestly feel no chemistry whatsoever whenever they are together. Their 'cute moments' that people seem to love, I just can't get into it? This is one of the rare times I do get second lead syndrome, and it's coming at me like a bag of bricks.

I love the growth between Seol and InHo, and although it's true that she doesn't have any romantic interest in him as of yet, I really like their dynamic!

I don't mind if InHo doesn't get the girl, but tbh, I don't want Seol to end up with Jung either. Seol may be a good influence for Jung, but Jung is not helping her grow. At least with InHo, he affirms that she should stand up for herself, and even gives her handy tools to fight off the crazies. I enjoy their friendship so much that I don't even need them to end up together (although it'd definitely make me happy if it were done right).

But bLunt and honest are not always good things. No filter can get tiring very fast.

I like Inho and Jung both but I Prefer a relationship which may take more work if it holds more potential.

And yes, Inho did help Seol to grow but Jung did as well. Ppl seem to forget all the many times Jung told Seol to be more careful and to stand up for herself.

Like the first time he's healing her wound in the park bench. He tells her to stop giving into others and stand up for herself/think about herself. He does the same when he comes rescues her from rapist who I don't know why he's still in the show. He tells her that he warned her she needs to be careful and stop giving into others (accepting the offered drinks) because not everyone is like her and the world is scarier that she thinks (from the get go? He knew how understanding she tries to be, hold her feelings in, and me a pushover because he was the same).

Jung has warned and tried to encourage Seol many times to stand up for herself and build get confidence. He's helped in her growth the same as if not more than (you can't honestly say their relationship and what she gets from it hasn't build up her confidence and get new found glow and courage to stand forth against San Chul's because "someone worry about me" then we see Jung give that small silent support by tapping an angry San Chul and getting him to stop with the loud berating a bit) Inho. Like/love/whatever looks good on Seol and has aided her in building confidence and assurance (she's even now more carefree joking laughing with her friends).

People seem to sweep a lot under the rug and have selective memory when it comes to Jung vs. In Ho debates lol. And In Ho DEF wasn't cute nor acted cute when we were introduced to him imo.

Using a poor college girl as a meal ticket, calling her Dog Fur when you don't know her and making fun of her looks and appearance (therefore it's not affectionate as say, friends teasing), snooping thru her phone and initially getting close to her to annoy a guy you have beef with...none of that would be anymore cute IRL than Jung's actions lol. In Ho is just an extrovert, and most people are drawn to extroverts.

Both guys have likeable points when looking at them objectively the same way both are flawed. Both do things that end up having negative effects on Seol, the same way both do things that help/encourage her.

Oh, I meant to say that I found your comment interesting as I see Jung as head over heels in love with Seol and like, "what is this I'm feeling?"?

I think that because his actions with her are so unlike His baseline behavior. He's used to women making the mve on him (seemed constant if we take the truckloads who appeared as soon as a gf space was vacated and Jooyeon/da young behavior into acct) but he initiates with Seol and is clearly the one more vested in the relationship. I think if you move away from suspecting him, his actions show a lot of I miss you, I want to be closer to you, I want to protect you.

When I see a character mve away from his baseline, it speaks more to me than someone who is used to speaking up because it cost him more

@petra agreed with your assessment of Jung - it's the same with Seol too (hence why I see attraction between them) - they are so clearly DIFFERENT because they care about each other.

Oh yes his actions do show that he's actually quite vested in this relationship...is he MORE vested than Seol? Hard to assess actually. I think Seol is equally vested (she spends a lot of time thinking about him), but contrary to popular opinion that Jung hasn't changed at all, I find that he HAS and so maybe that speaks to the depth of feeling he has towards Seol as compared to when they first got together. Here you can see that he's making the first moves towards reconciliation when it would have been easier for him to just cut off (as in line with his modus operandi); he says he is trying to fix it so he can close the distance between them (I don't think he gets it though but it shows he is TRYING). He really does miss her in this episode. I thought PHJ was superb in communicating that through his eyes, his hugs, his gaze and his body language whenever he sees her (like he really really wants to hug her but is holding himself back so hard).

Required fields are marked *

I agree with both comments! I do think Seol is just as invested, but it's shown very differently. I also think Jung might not think he's in love but he's accepted there's real depth to his feelings, so we get a lot more sadness and loneliness that radiates from his scenes bc of that. And agreed about PHJ, the word I kept thinking of while watching him was restraint, especially during their scene after the fight btwn Seol and Min Soo. You can almost see the battle going on inside over how affectionate he can be.

For Seol, a big part is she doesn't allow herself to realize the depth of her own feelings. But not wanting him to ignore her despite wanting space, not breaking out of that back hug, finally seeing things from his perspective, thinking about him/not wanting to break up, and her total transparent jealousy over the thought of Jung with In Ha...she's there and invested.

Hmm... I see both your points. I'll revise to consider Seol as equally invested in this relationship.

It is true she can't seem to let go of him either and constantly thinks of him.

0

I thought we saw growth in ep 9 that he was texting first. Unlike before where he erased text messages (even though he lingered) and really what would have happened if Seol hadn't texted him?

This time however he makes the first Mir and was even going to be honest, vulnerable, and real to his feelings (what Seol wants. honesty) by telling her he missed her and broaching the subjects of their fight. But then he couldn't send it...I thought his nut sending that message sad and holding back, but also him wanting to do as Seol requested and really think on things.

Jung is making small strides to bigger needed communication (or lack of) changes.

Is no one going to mention the massive improvement in direction and sound work this episode? CiTT looked and sounded nice before, but both visual and aural elements were mostly forgettable.

Yoo Jung threatening Min Soo; In Ho trailing after Hong Sul on the wooden walkway with the soft lights on the side; Min Soo and Hong Sul confronting each other; the fast cuts and zooms during In Ha and Young Gon's text conversation - these scenes were particularly striking. For once, the camera allowed more people roaming in the background, the angles were more interesting, the color palettes were softer and more refined, cut lengths were varied, and there was near constant sound in the background, in a natural, appropriate manner. Not to mention the nice acting from, well, everyone!

The elements were really cohesive this episode. I really hope this style of direction continues going forward. It's no White Christmas (kdrama) or Hannibal (Western drama) level direction, but it's certainly a step up.

I like how it's getting better with each new episode. With most dramas, quality starts dipping once they get into life-shoot because there's not enough time for proper editing I think. Hopefully this means more people will buy into that idea that pre-producing dramas doesn't necessarily mean dramas of lower quality!

Why is she still paying attention to anything coming from that guy? And, as Ann above points out, if I were Jung, I'd get really tired of being doubted all the time.

THIS!!!!!!

As much as I love Seol, come ON! She gets so insecure about InHa, can't she realize this is exactly how Jung feels about InHo? Honestly, if I were Seol's boyfriend I'd be really bothered by the amount of one on one time she's spending with InHo. I'm not saying you can't be friends with the opposite sex while dating, but you don't spend such one on one time like that. I'd be pissed if my husband were to do that.

The double standard is real lol. Jung's nowhere near the perfect boyfriend or person, but as much as we love Seol, has she been the perfect girlfriend when the only thing Jung has really asked of her is not to be so close to In Ho? I mean he doesn't even force her to be with him when she finds out more of his manipulations...she's the one also not giving up on their relationship, even if part of her probably wants to.

I get her trust issues, I do. I don't expect Seol to be the perfect girl and Jung continue to do things the way she doesn't like. I don't even want that.

But it's absolutely not okay for her to be so hung up over In Ha when In Ho is around her almost constantly. It's also not okay for some to invalidate Jung's feelings on the In Ho/Seol friendship just bc they don't want Jung as Seol's boyfriend.

YES to your last statement! Sometimes I find I want to take her aside and just whisper in her ear, like, "Seol-ah, maybe...like...take it easy with Inho?" but sadly I see why she likes hanging out with him (he really makes it easy for her - head and heart doesn't hurt with him, not in the way it does for Jung) so I wish it wasn't necessary for her to do that.

Sigh, but tbh Jung has done lots of stuff that hasn't aided Seol in trusting him either, so it's totally a two way thing. I like how this relationship is forcing both parties to mature and grow to meet each other half way (I hope they realise they CAN meet each other half way instead of just waiting for the other person to understand and come to them first!).

Okay, I got it ONCE in 'Greatest Love' with Yoon Pil Joo, but that was more because he was just a genuinely decent, amazing guy. I was still for the main couple in that drama, but my heart did hurt for sweet, hunky Yoon Pil Joo.

But THIS drama...oh man. THIS DRAMA has me by the heartstrings. I genuinely don't understand all the love for Jung (to me, he's off-puttingly cold and horrifyingly controlling), and my heart squeezes whenever In-ho comes on camera. I want him and Seol to get together so badly!

This is the drama that will teach me the pain of Second Lead Syndrome, I just know it. :'(

Never read the webtoon but watching this drama so far, I think Yoo Jung has a classic case of Aspergers Syndrome. He feels absolutely no compassion or feelings for anything and this form of autism description suits him to a T. Redemption is at least with Seol, he seems to be trying.

The episode last night was disturbing. I dunno how people can still ship an OTP where the girl was in a fight with a another, risking getting hurt and her man who supposedly cares just stands a corner and watch. I was INCREDULOUS. Wouldn’t it be instinctive for anyone in a relationship to be even more protective. I will dump the guy in a heartbeat if this was my situation. So he anticipated minor injuries and bought medication as a remedy. What if its more serious, just pay for surgery if something breaks. OMG.

I’m beginning to think thats the case with Inho’s hand. He likely got into trouble with those thugs because of standing up for Yoojung and when he was being beaten to a pulp by them, Yoojung probably stood by and did nothing to help and resulted in Inho’s hand being damaged.

I honestly don’t care about his secret pain and rubbish darkness that needs a damsel to rescue him. Just because he’s Park Hae Jin is no excuse for poor character.

A point of reference to the psychology of self centered people: http://www.nytimes.com/1964/03/27/37-who-saw-murder-didnt-call-the-police.html?_r=0

In closing - I never liked shipping wars but if the yardstick is measured on how to treat a girl right and not how to pander to Mr. Perfect. In-ho wins hands down. He’s NORMAL and so are his reactions. Will take his explosiveness and protectiveness anyway over a guy I’m forever trying to understand and JUSTIFY for.

Well love is wierd isn't it. You never choose a better person, you choose what your heart leans to.
And exactly because of love you want to understand, I don't think Seul seeks to justify what Jung does. But she's coming around understanding why he does it.

I won't go so far to say he's beyond help or really menacing. To a certain extent, everyone he did harm too deserve and self imploded on their own actions. What's wrong was how he felt superior enough to manipulate it to that.

It's interesting that where you two saw nonchalance and calculation, I saw concern, a bit of surprise and curiosity as to what would happen.

If he were truly nonchalant and coldly calculating, would he have erased youngGons video and moved that much closer to the fight? He positioned himself where he could jump in.

So by your reasoning, was everyone else watching...her classmates, friends and family also showing unconcern and nonchalance because they let her fight her own fight?

I don't care what your opinion of Jung is, tbh. But I do care when you pull in terms and insult a whole group of ppl.

0

I think people should just stop trying to play psychiatrist and diagnose Jung. We all don't know the whole story and just because Jung is different, doesn't mean he isn't "normal" or whatever the heck that means these days. As a nursing student going through my psych rotation right now, it's really disturbing to see the words used against people who aren't as open as Inho. "He's crazy" or "I would never let my friend go near him" are just a couple ones I hear and I think yours adds onto the list.

I pointed out earlier, but it doesn't help Jung when a huge portion of viewers and his own father compare him next to the bubbly Inho. I would also highly disagree that Jung feels no compassion.

I also don't think Jung needed to step in for his gf during that fight. It was something Seol needed to handle on her own without Jung, Bora, Inho or anyone else telling her how she should feel or what she should do. Seol, herself, decided to fight back and relinquish all the stress and anger she's had toward her. I doubt Minsoo was going to break her head open and I think if she was, Jung definitely would've stepped in.

" So he anticipated minor injuries and bought medication as a remedy. What if its more serious, just pay for surgery if something breaks. OMG. "

Funny because in the webtoon, Jungs tends Seol's bruises while asking if she is alright, and if she feels better for letting it all out.

Inho was the one who tried to give bought medication to Seol.

But here they changed this scene for Inho tending Seol's bruises, I don't get it.

Plus, it was a fight in school, with everyone watching, I don't think Minsoo would try something that bad because everybody was there to help.

I’m beginning to think thats the case with Inho’s hand. He likely got into trouble with those thugs because of standing up for Yoojung and when he was being beaten to a pulp by them, Yoojung probably stood by and did nothing to help and resulted in Inho’s hand being damaged.

Hmmm...I guess we have different perspectives on this. On this matter, I found Jung clearly protective (he ensured that the video of Minsoo + Seol fighting was deleted from Young Gon's phone; he passed her medicine after her fight with Minsoo) but also understanding that this was a fight Seol had to make on her own because it was about her making a stand. I was actually pretty glad he didn't rush in to help because hey, women can fight their own battles. Rushing in the way that Inho did (and does, for Young Gon) isn't necessarily always the best way to respond to the situation, since in the end, the target is and always will be Seol, and the crazy people need to understand that Seol CAN and WILL push back.

Hey! Ppl with Asperger's do have compassion and feelings, we just don't show it the same way or connect to them readily.

It was Seol's choice to fight. She had told him to give him room. I think you are making an awful lot of assumptions based on your personal feelings.

I just watch if someone chooses to fight unless I think there will be serious injury. That doesn't mean I don't care. You don't know if he would've stepped in or not. And all those other neuro-typical ppl, some her friends and family also did not step in for quite a bit.

And yes, it's such a classic fallacy about Asperger's that they don't have empathy, etc. It's regulated and expressed differently (especially in female Asperger's, which is vastly under-researched), but autism and sociopathy are basically neurological opposites.

Seriously. How often are we misunderstood?

I just feel in this day and age, with all the information out there, shouldn't we be past this?

PEOPLE WITH ASPERGERS/AUTISM DO HAVE EMPATHY.
Thank you.

In fact, if you subscribe to the Intense World Theory, we may have too much of things. Senses are heightened and it can lead to withdrawal in self defense.

That one makes sense to me personally as I feel the world is way too noisy, bright and my nerves get irritated.

But anyway, autism is a spectrum and while we are not all the same, the no empathy/feelings thing has been debunked.

It's a misunderstanding of the popular use of the word empathy vs what early psychologists meant. Ppl on the spectrum have trouble quite often with cues such as body language, changes in tone, etc. It wasn't a lack of the ability to feel but the ability to read what was being felt by the other party.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, I was getting really tired of a lot of the amateur psychological/pathological diagnosis, followed by really simplistic judgemental attitudes.

Autism is a spectrum, in fact, there are a lot of people who are have certain traits of Aspergers but would not even be classified as such, because they sit so far on one end of the spectrum.

I also know many people who can be more emotionally detached and calculating in the way they think - and it's not necessarily a bad thing either. In many workplaces, you have to have strong emotional control, the ability to assess and analyse situations and people, and strategise how to achieve your outcomes. A lot of work relationships are also based on a balance of favours. Being able to harness these is seen as a positive trait.

0

I agree with you so much on this. Not willing to diagnose the guy with Aspergers but he certainly has social issues and he's just calculating which is scary regardless of the intentions.

Ooooooh no no no, Jung. You do not set your girlfriend up. You definitely do not set her up in a situation where she might be forced into a fight. Absolutely no. No no no.

The terrible part is, I can see how in his cockeyed worldview, he might see this as letting her be independent and fight her own battles - all he thinks he's doing is exposing the issue and getting it out of the way. But he doesn't seem to understand that it is NOT a good thing that she instantly knew he'd engineered it, and then had to watch him stand back and just let it blow up.

I like Jung and think he's massively misguided, but yikes. Call him out on that, immediately.

Meanwhile In Ho is adorable. I still think he's a better brother than a lover, but that weaponry kit is hilarious (and needed!). He's a good guy and Seol's lucky to have him around, as he's lucky to have her around.

And see, I absolutely disagree. Eventually, whether Jung got involved or not, Min Soo was gonna lose that last bit of sanity she had and go after Seol physically (especially with YG encouraging her). She already deluded herself into thinking Seol copied HER. I'm glad it happened around others so they could intervene if it got dangerous, but even Bo Ra was in the background cheering Seol on and pulling people back to let her best friend fight (because Seol was the one who pushed Min Soo down and went at it).

Nope, can't co-sign, not remotely. Jung SET HER UP. He didn't warn her, he wasn't even close enough to step in, she looked right at him and knew that he'd set her up for this. All he did was confiscate Young Gon's phone.

You do not set your significant other up, you just don't. Sole exception being surprise parties, and even then you'd better be damn sure your partner likes surprise parties.

I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Min Soo would get physical - the girl was a mouse until a month ago. And I also don't buy that Jung coordinated it so others would be around when Min Soo blows her top - he knows that Young Gon is stalking Seol and is FAR more scary, and it's In Ho who's stepping up to provide bodyguard services.

I believe Jung thinks he was doing what needed to be done, but I also think he was dead wrong. Is there a good reason to blindside Seol here? Couldn't he have said "Min Soo has a photo of your brother and says he's her boyfriend, I'm going to have him come meet us for lunch and it'll come out in the open"? This was the most disruptive and explosive way to clear the air, and how on earth do you trust someone who's willing to set you up like that?

I think when you already discredited Jung's character, it is difficult to try to see him in a different light @kimyoung. He is flawed, and his characters along with Seol is the focus of the drama. He is the main lead after all. He tries very hard to communicate with Seol, but they are different. Seol have said that, they are in different wave length, but he is trying. Isn't it what relationship is also about? Trying to understand one's partner? you don't always agree on things, but you are working on it. And I think the word 'trying' has more meaning accentuate to it when it comes to Jung. He may not say all to Seol, but so does Seol, but when they do have conversation, he never lied to her. He always answer them honestly even the price is making both him and Seol suffer. But he never lied. So, I do not get why you said he is impossible when he definitely trying. He may just learn this new emotions called love, found a girl that understands him, it could be quite overwhelming you know. I can just think that you are biased of your hatred towards Jung, so no matter what he said or do it would not be enough to redeem him to your good side.

0

I don't disagree that the way he did it was wrong but this is Jung...did anyone expect different? He's not going to change immediately and I didn't expect him to. He's usually wrong with how he goes about these things. He's manipulated things with Min Soo since he saw the stolen lion. And just like with the stolen project ordeal, Seol finally overcame making a spectacle of herself in order to fight back.

This girl had stolen Seol's very identity, fabricated a lie about dating a guy she didn't even know the name of, exhibited obsessive behavior and many of Seol's classmates were taking this girl's side. Seol had to be pushed I think into action. Was it right? No. But I still love how it went down because I couldn't stomach more of Min Soo on my screen.

I interpreted as he DID set that up knowing that was going to blow up in Min Soo's face around everyone once Seol's brother was there, and I think he knew if he did approach Seol beforehand, there was a chance Min Soo wouldn't be exposed to everyone and she'd find another way of blaming Seol and the cycle continues. And by the time they were fighting... Bo Ra, her brother, Ah Young, Jung, any of them could have intervened. I don't know, sometimes I've said people overreach with Jung's manipulations, but I do think this time he orchestrated it for others to be around.

I really disagree. Min Soo was TERRIFYING to me. And beyond her own delusion, she listened to everything YG fed her. All it'd take is one word from him and she would have done anything to Seol, imo.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Seol called him out because she needed to, but when she even makes a comment about understanding his logic, well...

I don't expect differently of Jung, but I want someone to call him on it. You're allowed to make mistakes as long as they're pointed out as mistakes, basically. I can't imagine Seol wants to go through her life getting blindsided because her boyfriend thinks she needs to get into a confrontation, or he thinks her reaction would be better coming from a place of ignorance. That way lies imprisonment for tax evasion, etc.

0

I think it's a foregone conclusion that Minsoo would fight.
She has already crushed that lion and stepped on it...she thought it looked like Seol and so did Jung. And Jung saw her do it. It's inevitable what would be next.

That copycat behavior turns vicious when it's exposed to reality. And yes, it's MUCH safer when that happens in front of a large group of ppl in public.

What I don't think was a foregone conclusion was if Seol would fight.

0

Required fields are marked *

Normally, I'd say - yup, I would agree with the broad principle here. But this is Seol. Like you said previously - Seol avoids confrontation or might confront before having a full hand. If Jung told her that, she might have rushed off to confront Min Soo on her own. That would have given Min Soo time to shift, lie, do something else, or Min Soo might have attacked her while she was on her own.

It's all about teamwork from my perspective. Seol needs Jung to lay out the pros and cons and formulate a foolproof plan - Jung needs Seol to point out social pitfalls and signs of psychopathy. But all partnerships, including romantic ones, are based in common teamwork and trust, and that's what was missing in this instance.

All of this is giving Min Soo too much power. She's an unstable girl who is building up a stack of lies, they can be pushed over at any time. I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Min Soo would be violent either. And I find it completely weird that Min Soo would be considered a clear and present danger to Seol when Young Gon is golluming it up on the sidelines.

0

Without ignoring that Young Gun is also dangerous, but of a different ilk - I'm one of those who do consider Min Soo a clear and present danger and here's why.

Actions like copying a haircut, clothes, style etc - might seem trivial. But to do it to a point where identities are mistaken, and the copied is clearly upset - it's psychologically violent. And then there's the lion trinket - again, the show is clever on using something that seems trivial, to show a clear violation. It's easy to dismiss Min Soo taking a trinket, cos after all, it's a cheap trinket. But it's also so much more for Seol as it has great sentimental value.

The show plays on the desire most people have in the world to brush things under the carpet to keep the peace. After all, isn't this just a trinket? It's only a small thing to repress. The background chatter would be saying - Isn't Seol just overdramatising? Isn't she just being petty?

But that comes the rub - it's the small things that build to a whole - including identity and a sense of self. Min Soo, if given a chance, will continue to take little by little, Seol's identity, and sanity.

We see it similarly in Dad's terrible negation of his son's rights and feelings. It's a poisonous thing - like why not give up your pen, your toy - ultimately, your right to feel what you feel.

But yes - teamwork is good - good communication is good - but sigh, the show's characters have a way to go yet.

0

@ Dramapanda

Thank you for your summation. This is what I wanted to say but you covered it quite eloquently.

If ppl take anything away from this, I hope they realize how dangerous copycat behavior is. It seems rather benign and trivial even, but it's really, really not.

@ Miranda

Agree on the need for more teamwork. If Jung can't see himself as a team with Seol, if he doesn't change to that point then I don't feel it's a good idea.

Reserving judgment for now. More info needed.

0

Actually, I think it's more than time for Seol to have stood her ground. She should have done this like 2 episodes ago. I think Jung expected Seol to have immediately understood he engineered the situation - when she confronted him, he clearly didn't deny it, nor did he look surprised that she caught on - because from the start, he thought that he liked her because they were so similar. And this was his way of telling her that she needed to just stop putting up with Min Soo's BS and get it all out in the open and let people know how affected she's been by this!

It's pretty much like what Seol reflected after the fight - if she'd maybe responded to Min Soo earlier, then everything might have looked different (although she came from it from a much softer perspective in that she was thinking about befriending Min Soo, whereas I'm not convinced that befriending her would have stopped her from turning into the crazy person that she did...)

Also, Inho's brash ways of dealing with Young Gon are just as bad as Jung's ways of dealing with Min Soo imo. Possibly worse because now Inho got her fired from her job at the library (although one could argue that it's Da-young's fault...but...if Inho didn't chase Young Gon and threaten to beat him to a pulp...Young Gon would have had no leg to stand on...).

I'm convinced that befriending Minsoo before all these happening would help her. She chose to copy Seol because she think highly of her. If Seol didn't brush Minsoo attempt to befriend her continously and become real friend to her it would help her increase her self esteem. But not only Seol continously brush her aside, Bora accuse her as a thief when she try to give the doll back. And after that people start to notice her and befriending her. As someone who never have presence before, it is very appealing.

0

Required fields are marked *

...er...I'm less convinced that befriending would have helped Minsoo because she's clearly got her own frame in looking at the world - who's not to say that even after Seol befriends her, Young Gon wouldn't have been able to shake Minsoo and convince her that she's better than Seol etc.? Because Minsoo seems like the kind of person who's not as self-aware as others are, and who's easily persuaded...and if she has a craving to be popular and smart and loved, who's not to say that she wouldn't have felt like Seol's sidekick even after being befriended and would have lashed out even worse?

So, no, I'm not very convinced, but it was nice of Seol to have thought that.

This is victim blaming imho. It really doesn't matter if Seol had been nicer and befriend Minsoo. I think it would have been more dangerous if Seol had befriended Minsoo because at the core of it, it isn't about Seol or friendship, it's about Minsoo have self-esteem and self identification problems. She didn't like herself or who she was. She was a loser in her own eyes (bad grades, no boyfriend, no friends, including -to her- to the school). Minsoo was projecting her own self loathing onto Seol and looking to Seol to heal something or validate something in her that only she with help from a professional can do for herself.

It wasn't about Seol and friendship so even if they became friends it would have gotten worse because would have wanted more than Seol could give and no matter what Seol have it wouldn't be enough and it would have turned into what we saw here. Anger, jealousy, resentment, and envy of what Seol has. Again the problem was Minsoo and get damaged belief in herself. Seol was a victim of the girls damaged mind because if it wasn't Seol it could have easily been Bora she was imitating, Dayoung, Euntaek, heck even professor Kang. She had this damaged mind frame of "if only I had this this or that that_____ has my life would be perfect. I would be perfect and feel good about myself" when that is not the truth. Again she needs profession help in building confidence in herself and an identification. I hope the time off school she gets that.

Now Younggon is the same case. It's not text messages, a nice gesture or anything like that, that has Yoounggon stalking Seol. Again that's victim blaming and taking the responsibility from the person responsible and that is Younggon and Younggon alone. In both cases other people played a part a share the burden in things, however the act of stalking is all on Younggon and his damaged mind. Just as it was the case with Minsoo, it is the same here. It's not about Seol, Seol was just the target and we have been shown with YG that if it wasn't Seol it has been and would have been another girl on campus. Younggon needs so much help but first he needs to be kicked off campus because he is an immediate threat and danger to himself and others. He lacks control (which Jung for all his issues has) and I'm scared he's a school massacre waiting to happen.

I disagree because I don't think that's real friendship. Real friendship is a meeting of minds and hearts, and for each person to have a sense of self and good boundaries. In this situation, Min Soo is already trying to wheedle Seol into have a meal with her, making her feel deeply uncomfortable with her copycat behaviour. I can't see this ending well as it's just a one-sided parasitic relationship. Fundamentally, whatever is wrong with Min Soo is deeply embedded within herself, and it is not up to Seol to fix her, nor can Seol.

Yes!!!

Jung knew what he was doing, too. Seol DID need a push, and look at her. Finally, FINALLY standing up for herself. She didn't continue to focus on him "setting her up" because I think she realized the ends justified the means this time and Jung didn't orchestrate anything so her skull would get split open. He just wanted to give her that small push so she'd stand up and stop taking Min Soo's abuse (and yes, I call stealing someone's identity abuse).

Min Soo was a freaking nightmare and she needed to be exposed in front of everyone, and it went down exactly as it should have imo. I don't even like violence and...here I am...

I grow tired of the Jung vs. In Ho comparisons always in In Ho's favor. I think the drama toned In Ho down intentionally so there'd be more mystery around Jung. But In Ho still has very obvious flaws and they have consequences to Seol that are stressing her out even more as you pointed out.

Haha I just think the Inho vs. Jung comparisons should be more nuanced and balanced - I find both characters equally flawed, and equally problematic. I suppose, as friends, no problem cos there's still a certain (emotional? and physical) distance that's maintained, but because the drama clearly has this romantic overlay, it's like people need to justify why this one boy over the other (although...folks...Seol is the one who needs to make that choice, and not us...).

And where's the fun in that?
If we let Seol decide her own romantic life, then In-ho never had a chance. Then the only choice for Seol would be whether she wants to work it out with Jung or not.

He did not get her fired. What a ridiculous way to look at the situation.

Actually, his actions did lead to her being fired. In Ho needs to dial it down a few notches and use his brain. He already knew Bo Ra and Eun Taek's goal was to film YG from last episode. Seol is YG's target, and anything In Ho does to him will be taken out on Seol. He already knows YG got HIM fired, so no, it's not a ridiculous way to look at things, it's LOGICAL.

People just prefer how In Ho openly fights because he's too impulsive and emotional to scheme like Seol's own friends are doing in regards to YG (and they're the smart ones, NOT In Ho).

Conflict management approaches:

Bo-ra: loudest argument wins!
In-ho: shoot first, ask questions later.
Jung: stealth sniper approach -- when you can see the conflict, you are already dead.
Dark!Seol: avoid conflict. if you cannot avoid it, be brutal and learn your lesson afterwards.

@ Jon

Lol!

Euntake: go along as the lackey unless someone messes with Bora, then fists

Sangchul: Sunbaes should always win so bully through

Jaewoo: whine til someone gives me tools

Kyunghan: conflict? Huh? I'm a nice guy.

Da Young: close your eyes to the truth and bitch on through

@ Jon G. and Petra

Thanks for that! Haha!! Agree, agree!

I second Jeanie's comment! Lol

In Ho, Jung, and Da Young's are absolutely dead on.

@Jon and Petra

Those are ace!

Teacher Kang: Teacher automatically wins, you get a D! (You're dead!)

You seem to be forgetting that Min-soo attacked Seol first by grabbing her collar. Neither Jung nor Young-gon put her up to it. There's a saying that the devil only uses those who have some evil in them. Min-soo is crazy all by herself. Young-gon didn't make her dress up as Seol or make her pass Seol's lion off as hers. She did that all by her crazy self. What I'm trying to say is, Min-soo got violent because she didn't have anything else to fight with. If it wasn't public, she'd probably have dropped to her knees and pleaded for forgiveness. She didn't realize that raising her voice wouldn't help her this time around.

actually Young Gon did put her up to it, she glanced to him before he attacked Seol. He made the gesture by putting his hand on his neck, which means kill. and after that Min Soo grab Seol's collar.

I'm starting to understand Jung more too. All his life he gets these crap people around him who makes use of his status money skills etc but he's been brought up by his dad expectations that he has to leave a good impression, don't screw up. Which we see him say in this episode. When u have all these trouble people in ur life and can't seek them out in the open (unlike inho who is the exact opposite: he says fight and crush them), his way of responding is to scheme in secret and let them plot their own demise.
It's a bad way to live because increasingly you feel manipulation is the way of life.

He and Seul are similar in some ways but the biggest difference is that he sees that these people deserve it, he wouldn't been able to do it to them if they weren't. while Seul sees why they do things and will look back about what she could have done to help them.
So she will never reconcile with his way of thinking and hence the only way they get back together is she brings him over to this side. Which I believe is his arc in the story on top of the romance.

Really enjoying this!

I really really really hope Seol does not have anything beyond platonic feelings for Baek In Ho. I'm okay with In Ho crushing on Seol but I really don't want her feelings to waver because I love the friendship they have.

Frankly, I question whether or not In Ho would make a better boyfriend?? Granted, it would be easier to date him seeing as how things are so difficult with Yoo Jung but I think In Ho has way too many personal demons to get through (I mean, we're just starting to see some resemblance of a GOAL with the help of Seol). While In Ho is a calmer presence for Seol, I think his zealous nature would become grating in the long run.

Personally, I think Seol is better off on her own at this point. Both guys are seriously making her life very frustrating and it's making me wonder why she's dating Yoo Jung in the first place. Is it cause he's hot? or cause a sunbae is giving her attention? Was it simply because he appreciated her hard work, which her parents do not seem too?

Screw both guys Seol-ah, be your fierce self on your own girl!

(P.S I'd love to see a kdrama where the female lead dumps both first and second male leads and just rides off in the sunset on a motorcycle or something...)

I think she is dating him because they connect at a certain level - she understands him (in the sense that she's not fooled by his nice persona and she often catches on quite quickly when she notices him manipulating scenes whereas other folks aren't as quick to catch on) and he sort of understands her (in the sense that he admires her for being her own person and for doing everything she can to live her own life, which is not something even her own folks appreciate her for - you can see this when she talks about her family and having to give up stuff for her brother when he went overseas or when her Dad's business failed again and the family has no money for her to continue living close to school).

Great idea! There's so many little thing that I'm sure I missed the first time and will make difference after all these revealing.

Yes, I think they 'get' each other when no one else does....which is what drew them together initially. I LOVE how they now need each other.....so quietly visible with the hands, hugs and smiles

Love your comment about riding off into the sunset. Who knows, it might happen as apparently this drama is supposed to have a surprise ending. Which I must say has made me anxious and wondering if I really want to see the end. Which of course I shall because I am just in too deep to back out. *Think I will go hide under my covers now as feelings of dread creep over me whenever I hear or see the words surprise ending or twist ending. Because it very rarely ends up in my favor*

I agree with your proposal would like to subscribe to your news letter! ^_^

Frankly, although my heart SINGS WITH HAPPINESS every time In-ho is on the screen, I don't think he'd be a great boyfriend for Seol. I think he needs to mature a little bit more before he'd be good boyfriend material for someone as introspective and hard-working as our girl.

Jung...well, Jung. I can't stand him as a romantic partner for Seol, because he is controlling and manipulative and those are two horrible qualities to have in a relationship.

So yes, your idea of her being gloriously single at the end of this drama is one that I heartily co-sign, and I would be over-the-moon happy if it actually happened!

I've never seen the webtoon, but gosh I am loving this series. Despite its fair share of caricature of the usual crazies in dramaland, the relationships between the characters are so down to earth and everyone feels like a REAL person.

I love the directional touch and the tone of the OST and cinetography. The scene last episode with the golden fall leaves was just beautiful.

I have always had a soft spot for the odd ball that grows and tried to diligently turn it around, so I like the story arc for Baek In Ho. I like that he's learning and growing as a person, but he is still the fiery guy he was in episode one...he tries, gets mad, then tries again, learns....it helps that Seo Kang Joon is doing such a great job of really bringing Baek In Ho to life.
