Cheese in the Trap: Episode 4
by javabeans
Time for the pendulum to swing, and the thing about being in an overthinker’s brain is, there’s no end to the number of ways a thing can be read, analyzed, and interpreted. I’d say misinterpreted, but to be fair, our resident overthinker isn’t so far off-base when she’s trying to get a handle on someone who’s as transparent as glass—the kind that’s clear one moment, then foggy another, obscuring the view with hot-and-cold changes in mood that never quite give us enough warning.

EPISODE 4 RECAP
Jung walks Seol home and lingers at the door, then takes her by the wrist and asks her to date. Seol is so surprised that she stammers that she doesn’t know why he’d say that out of the blue, and that she’s never thought about having a boyfriend.
Jung takes this in and lets go of her wrist, as though to accept her refusal. Flustered, Seol instinctively grabs his hand back before realizing what she’s done, which endears her to me forever. She lets go right away, so frazzled she can barely form words, and starts saying that it’s not that she doesn’t like him…
“Then let’s date,” Jung says, smiling. “I think it’ll be okay if we do. Let’s.”
Seol nods nervously, and when he prods for a reply, she blurts, “Y-yes.”
“Good,” he says. Then he says good night, and Seol literally trips over herself in her haste to get inside. She’s is the most adorable bundle of nerves ever. She makes it to her room in disbelief, stealing glances at the hand that grabbed his.
Then she erupts into squeals, burying her head into her pillow, exclaiming, “This is crazy! It makes no sense!” She tries to reason through this unexpected twist, wondering why Jung would ask her out, and imagines extra versions of herself analyzing the situation.
They remind her that he’s never shown interest before and that he’d ignored her thoroughly last year, and decide Jung must be up to something.
“But why did you nod yes?” they ask Seol, who wonders that herself.
The next morning, she frets about how to face Jung and what to tell her friends, then recalls that the term’s over and it’s vacation now. She’s relieved to have this reprieve, although when she sees him at school, I note how she lights up and waves hello.
Jung returns her smile… and then just heads out with his friends. Huh?
Seol can’t help being disappointed at his nonchalance, and is distracted through her session with her guidance counselor. “Is he regretting it?” she wonders.
The session doesn’t go well, with the counselor shaking her head at Seol’s meager transcript—she has good grades, but no club activities, internships, or other activities. Why did she choose this major—what is her dream?
Seol thinks dejectedly how it’s hard enough for her to come up with next semester’s tuition, much less cultivate a dream. She worries that without a scholarship, she may have to take more time off to work.
When she visits her parents, she gently broaches the topic of money—but they’re in worse shape than she is, with her father losing yet more money to a string of failed business ventures. There’s a brother, too, and Mom asks Seol to give up her lodgings and commute from home, so they can use that money for both kids’ tuitions.
Seol can’t do anything but agree, though it’s a blow. She tries to convince herself that she never liked living in her tiny room anyway, and that a four-hour commute to school is for the best.
She wonders why she hasn’t heard from Jung, sighing that she doesn’t have anyone to ask for dating advice since she’s still on the outs with Bora. But Eun-taek calls her out to initiate the reconciliation, which starts out stiffly but soon warms up, since both friends are feeling sorry. Seol apologizes for not sharing about her situation, promising to try harder. Bora apologizes too, saying she’d felt hurt to know nothing, and asks that they both be more honest with each other.
Seol promises, and the friendly mood returns to the trio. Eun-taek makes passing mention of seeing Jung at school, and Seol jumps to ask questions, which tips her friends off that something’s up. She deflects that it’s nothing, but they remind her of her promise to be honest, and finally Seol blurts that Jung asked her to date. They think she’s joking until she goes off in a rant about how he asked out of the blue and hasn’t called and now she doesn’t know what to do.
Seol gets a call from the department office asking if she’s interested in a part-time job there. She’s puzzled at the offer dropping into her lap, but jumps to take it. Bora leaves her with the advice to call Jung and chat about her job and his vacation, saying, “Dating is timing.” (And I notice it seems Eun-taek has been pestering Bora to date him, to no avail.)
Seol ties herself into knots writing a text to Jung, telling him about her new job and asking what he’ll be doing over break. She sends it with bated breath, then leaps to read his reply, which he taps out quickly while playing video games.
Seol deflates to read, “Okay. That’s good. Have a good break.” Does that mean he doesn’t want to see her during vacation?
Break begins and Seol starts her job in the departmental office, working under the irascible department assistant. Everything she does gets criticized, whether it’s not showing up early enough or showing up too early or giving him the coffee he asked for instead of the one he now wants.
Jung drops by out of the blue to take Seol on a coffee break, telling the staff that they’re dating. It startles her, given his lack of communication, but he’s friendly and attentive and even asks if she hasn’t missed him, since he missed her when she hadn’t called.
Surprised, Seol says that his last text sounded like he didn’t intend to see her over break. Jung hadn’t realized she’d take it that way—he meant it at face value when he wished her a good vacation. Mortified, Seol asks herself, “What’s wrong with me? I feel so sorry.”
She mumbles an apology about not having any experience in relationships, and Jung smiles and suggests a date on the weekend.
On date day, Seol picks through her clothes, suddenly aware how drab they all are, thinking of In-ho’s passing comment about how she ought to dress in brighter clothes. She also recalls In-ho making fun of her “dog hair” and brushes out her curly bangs self-consciously.
Jung gets a refund notice from the computing class In-ha has dropped, and sees that she’s racked up a number of bills at cafes and malls. He’s unsurprised, and calls his father to suggest putting the pressure on her to get her act together. Why do I feel like this was your plan all along?
His mood feels rather chilly as he deals with the In-ha situation, but brightens as he texts Seol about their date, and suddenly he feels much younger and sweeter. That is certainly the paradox of Jung, isn’t it?
Fiddling with her straightened bangs, Seol runs into In-ho on her way to her date, and he takes one look at her frumpy outfit and laughs, saying she looks like a grandma.
Seol hears that he’s been applying to jobs and points out that his attire is just as inappropriate. In-ho honestly doesn’t see why, but she picks out the casual tee, the ripped jeans, and the bare feet in sandals, and chides him on making a good first impression.
He argues that she’s hardly one to be giving clothing advice, and she protests that she picked out her flashiest clothes. He laughs to realize she took his advice, and scoffs that she can’t be going to meet a guy like this, right? Heart sinking, Seol dashes back home to change.
Jung’s already waiting for her at the movies, smiling to see her in the distance. As she primps to her reflection, he raises a finger against her image in the distance, “patting” her head with his fingertip.
Seol apologizes for being late and offers to buy the popcorn, since she has a coupon. For some reason that gives Jung pause, and he suggests going to the cafe while they wait for their movie. Seol suggests an arcade instead, and gives him instructions on how to play the shooter game, only to have him shoot perfectly and log a record score. He sort of misses her double hi-five gesture, and she thinks how awkward this feels.
Then during the movie, Seol sighs that their tastes are different—he picked a boring foreign film, while she’d have rather seen an action flick. Yet when he asks if she’s bored, she lies that it’s fine.
In-ha’s shopping spree is cut short when her cards are frozen, and despite her best attempts to wheedle Chairman Yoo into changing his mind, he’s gently firm. He reminds her that she has a job offer at the company if she gets her computing certificate, and has paid for the first month. After that it’s up to her.
Chairman Yoo adds that “even Jung” felt she should learn to take care of herself, as though Jung is usually too nice. In-ha is left sputtering at Jung’s sneakiness, outraged that he’d dare cut her off.
Jung takes Seol to a fancy restaurant, where the prices make her fret. She even suggests that they don’t have to eat here, though he assures her that the food is good.
So she picks the cheapest item and assures him she’s fine with plain soup, and sinks when he orders expensive wine. She sees this as more proof of their differences and thinks, “I want to go home.”
In-ho takes Seol’s advice and dresses in nicer clothing for his next job interview, and gets the cleaning job. Then the boss comes by and likes the look of him, and before he knows it, he’s earned a nice stack of cash for shooting some ads for them.
With Jung ignoring her calls, In-ha tries her brother next, asking for money and pouring on the dramatics, insisting she’s going to starve and die. Against his better judgment, In-ho gives her most of his payday, saying this is really the last time.
He adds the warning to wise up since Jung is intent on cutting them off, but In-ha points out that it’s In-ho who’s the problem: “If you both cut the pride crap and you go back with head bowed, this would all be over.”
Jung drives Seol home, and makes conversation about her job. She says that she’d wanted to study English during the break but doesn’t have the time for it, and he offers to put her in contact with a friend who runs an English academy, who’d give her a discount.
Once home, Seol wonders if all dates are so exhausting, then grabs for food since dinner left her starving.
In-ho calls Jung repeatedly until he finally answers, taking issue with Jung cutting off In-ha before she could get a job. Jung merely says, “I warned you not to hang around the people near me.”
In-ho doesn’t get what he means until Seol steps inside the convenience store, then puts it together: She’s the reason. But he doesn’t want to stop hanging around her, he thinks.
Seol joins him at the food counter, and they fall into an easy bickering pattern. He notes her massive amounts of food and she comments on his improved clothing choices. He bugs her for money to buy kimchi, and they fight over the pack before splitting it down the middle.
When she notices him using chopsticks with both hands and remarks on it, In-ho explains that he was left-handed before an accident: “This hand—Yoo Jung made it that way.”
Seol stops and stares, and he just tells her to be careful: “If you come crying later when you get hurt, I won’t help.”
Jung fields a call from his father, who tells him about talking to In-ha and cautions him not to press the matter too much. Jung tells him not to worry, and turns to his sketchbook. Okay, so he works on intricate paper cutouts and colorful drawings in his spare time. Not sure what that detail will lead to, but for now, his meticulous artistic hobbies have been duly noted.
As they walk home, In-ho tells Seol the kimchi doesn’t count as one of his owed meals. She sighs that she’s barely managing to feed herself as it is, and complains about the job where she gets scolded no matter what she does.
In-ho asks, “So what, you just take it? Well, it did seem your life was pretty frustrating. You’re always saying, ‘No, it’s okay’ and ‘Yes, I understand’ and ‘I’ll work hard,’ right? If you live like that, you’ll spend your whole life only suffering.” She’ll always get the short end of the stick, he says.
When he suggests beef for their next dinner, she snaps at In-ho, calling him her biggest stress right now, worrying that he’ll mooch off her forever. In-ho tells her approvingly to let her feelings out, just like this.
Once alone, Seol thinks that In-ho doesn’t seem like a bad person, and wonders what’s between him and Jung. Just then, Jung texts her to let her know he spoke with the English academy and tells her to check it out. She’s grateful but can’t help worrying, “Is it okay to just keep receiving things?”
She texts him a thank-you, adding, “And today… I had fun. I feel sorry to be treated to so much. Next time I’ll buy dinner.” He agrees, and they wish each other a good night.
The next day, Seol goes to the English academy to sign up, and finds out that she’s been marked for free tuition. Then she runs into In-ho in the hall, and discovers that he works here, partly as ad model, partly as assistant, partly as janitor. He declares cheerfully that they’ll be seeing lots of each other from now on, though she seems less thrilled than he does.
She comes home as the landlord’s grandson is visiting to fix a rickety window, and asks him to take a look at hers too, especially since there’s a neighborhood weirdo reportedly on the loose. Seol takes a call from Jung as her window is being worked on, and when she mentions the free class, Jung acts like it’s news to him.
It isn’t, of course, and he thanks the academy owner for the favor, admitting that Seol is his girlfriend. Then his eyes fall on the new academy brochures, and he freezes to recognize In-ho.
At work, the uptight department assistant dumps a pile of work on Seol and tells her to complete it by the end of the day. She thinks of In-ho’s advice and stands up for herself, telling him that it’s too much work for anybody to complete in a day, and he has to back down when someone else indicates it’s not necessary to have it completed that quickly.
Jung drops by to take Seol on a break, and she thanks him for his help with English class. She briefly considers mentioning In-ho when he asks about the academy, then supposes it might make Jung feel bad and answers merely that there’s nothing special to report.
Jung smiles and says goodbye, but his face falls as he walks off, thinking of her “nothing much” answer.
Jealous classmate Joo-yeon drops by the office, and a staffer mentions that her friend Jung was around earlier to see Seol. Seol tries to interrupt before she says too much, but it’s enough to tip Joo-yeon off to their dating status.
Joo-yeon asks to talk to her, and starts by explaining that she doesn’t like Seol, which is why she sent the homeless man to her. She says she hadn’t meant for Seol to get hurt and even went to Jung to ask for help—but Jung just left without doing anything.
Seol shuts her down when she starts to turn the blame on Jung, saying that what matters is that Joo-yeon initiated the incident. Joo-yeon fires off a passive-aggressive “Fine, I’m sorry, all right?” that sounds nothing like an apology. Seol returns, “You’re not sorry in the least, are you?”
She tells Joo-yeon not to show herself in front of her again, and Joo-yeon says to herself, “You two are both really harsh.”
Flashback. Seol and the homeless man are escorted out of the building, and Joo-yeon watches from around the corner, feeling guilty to see Seol holding her bleeding arm. Jung joins her, having called security, and tells her she should have stopped earlier.
Joo-yeon grabs his arm pleadingly, saying she really didn’t think it would go this far. Couldn’t he let it go this once? Jung gives her a cold smile and agrees, “But that’s it.” He reaches up to cup her face with his hand, startling her, and says, “Don’t show yourself in my sight again.”
So Joo-yeon walks away determined to never tell Seol the rest of the story—that Jung stepped in to help, and that he’s much colder than Seol realizes.
Seol can’t understand why Jung would act that way, then ask to date. She ignores his call after English class, her head full of thoughts.
In-ho intercepts her and clocks her mood, then enlists her help in folding test papers into airplanes. She points out that his planes all crash, teasing him when hers outfly his. He just thinks to himself, “She smiled.”
It’s raining when they step outside, and neither has an umbrella. In-ho proposes that the loser of a race to the store will buy one, ignoring her protests, and starts running. Seol finds herself running after him, and they laugh as they race through the rain.
In-ho gets to the store first, but Seol yanks him back and overtakes him, claiming the victory. On the walk home, they bicker about each other’s competitive spirits (and rule-breaking methods), and it’s only now that In-ho asks why she looked so down earlier.
She tries to say it’s nothing, but he doesn’t believe her and prods for the truth. She asks if he was telling the truth about his hand, and he guesses something happened between her and Jung.
She says no, but In-ho says, “Don’t just say no, and talk. You’ll age yourself this way.”
They round the corner, and Seol sees him first: Jung, waiting outside her front door. He addresses her only, saying he’d heard about the neighborhood prowler and checked on her windows and doors.
In-ho scoffs that the lofty Jung would spare concern for someone else, but Jung shocks him with the reply, “Because she’s my girlfriend.”
COMMENTS
From a narrative standpoint, there were a lot of things I really enjoyed about this episode, even if the plot took a less giddy turn. I wasn’t disappointed, necessarily, but I do enjoy me some giddy, cute honeymoon romances so I wouldn’t have complained for more sweetness. But this isn’t a conventional romance drama in the sense that the focus of Cheese in the Trap isn’t the couple getting together. Purely being in a relationship is no guarantee of anything, not even of the couple’s feelings for each other, and especially not when both halves of the couple have some things to work through, both individually and together.
We’ve seen the signs that Jung liked Seol (or was at least intrigued by her) early on, but it felt realistic and understandable that she’d be confused by what she sees as mixed signals. If you have the assurance that he’s being serious about his feelings, it seems like Seol is way overthinking this, but given that we mostly see everything from her perspective, it’s not unreasonable that she’s uncertain of his motives. Maybe it’s unfair that she doesn’t take him at his word, but you know what, this is the downside of being a cipher—you have to earn the trust.
I suspect that Jung feels that people need to earn trust from him, but I’d bet he doesn’t see where that applies to him as well. It strikes me that as nice as he can be—and I mean genuinely nice to Seol, not the fake-nice facade he puts on for the world—he approaches the world from a mighty self-centered place, where everything is on his terms or not at all.
The previous episode touched on Seol’s need to learn how to communicate, and we’ve seen how it’s tripped her up in various ways—already she’s had friendship hiccups (and class troubles) because of her tendency to be too inside her own head and not express her thoughts aloud. She’s also cluing in to her need to fix this about herself, and it seems like this’ll be one of the significant parts of her emotional trajectory.
In some senses it feels like Jung is ahead of Seol in figuring out how to deal with exploiters and moochers and standing up for himself, but other, significant ways, he feels way behind her. He also has the tendency to decide things himself and act on those decisions, just like Seol, except she’s at least self-aware. He doesn’t seem to consider it a problem, and I’ll be interested to see how (if?) change is prompted in him.
I’m drawn to the In-ho development because so far, he feels like he’s suffering on his own, still hurt by Jung while Jung has put everything coldly behind him. I’m inclined to think both guys are hurting the same, but I like that In-ho is the opposite of Jung, completely in touch with how he feels (to his detriment, sometimes, in that he has no filter).
And if he’s the guy who can prod Seol into standing up for herself and expressing herself in positive ways, I have to be rooting for him, at least in part. I don’t know if I’ll be torn on the romantic ‘ship, because I’m a sucker for a good OTP, but the second leads always get my sympathies. I’m not swayed by the “he deserves her more” argument inasmuch as nobody is entitled to someone else’s love, but we can’t ignore how uncomfortable Seol is around Jung, and how comfortable she seems in contrast when she’s with In-ho.
Of course, you can argue that things are easy with In-ho because she doesn’t care about him, and she’s stiff with Jung because she likes him too much to relax. But I’ve gotta admit to feeling a sinking feeling when she was out on a date with her boyfriend and could only think, “I want to go home.” And all episode, the word she kept repeating in regards to the relationship was “awkward.”
In a different drama, this would be a key sign that they weren’t meant to be together, no matter how they might feel in the moment, because she wasn’t being true to herself or honest about her feelings (it’s this dynamic about the couple that I really loved about Let’s Eat 2, for instance). But that isn’t to say awkwardnesses can’t be overcome, and couples can’t learn to communicate. I’m happy to let the show explore that gradually, though I wouldn’t mind a few kisses thrown in to help move things along…. Skinship is communication, right?

I don't get why so many posters are complaining about the awkwardness of Seol and YJ's first date. Have you all bought into the kdrama trope of first dates? First dates are hella awkward enough, and then now you have 2 people who've never dated before. Recipe for disaster.
I actually like it that YJ is manipulative and scheming. It's realistic and adds shades of gray to the story. I don't want him to turn into a knight in shining armor, secret Batman type.
While InHo and Seol get along really well, I don't see much depth to their relationship. They're too easy, quite childlike in their silliness. YJxSeol is the type of relationship that's complicated and difficult, but ultimately challenges the involved parties to grow and develop as individuals.

yes and *spoiler* i think director intends for jung and seol to be that (awkward) way in their first date to make the growth/change later more clearly because that's how their relationship in webtoon will develop. It can only get deeper from this point.

Yup. Completely agree. It's also just so much more fun and interesting to watch Yoo Jung and Seol as a couple. They cause each other to grow in ways that surprise you. I do think the relationship between Seol and In-ho is one I'd ship in any other drama. But because Yoo Jung's personality is such a mystery it's far more compelling seeing how a perceptive, down-to-earth girl like Seol handles a relationship with him.

This is the only adaptation drama that I've ever gone back and looked at the source material for. At first I was just gonna glimpse at a few episodes of the webtoon to see what the overall tone is (I wanted to make sure it wouldn't get too dark and angsty) but I was totally sucked in and read all the available episodes I could find (at least at the site I was using... I think the actual series is far ahead of where I left off). Interestingly enough, the drama has caught up to the 2 seasons that I read through in only four episodes without really missing out on much of the characterization and important backstory points. So, I'm excited to see where we're gonna go from here.

I came to watch this Park Hye jin and Seo kang joon. I liked park since MLFAS, i fell for him not for Kim soo Hyun, i don't know why? and Seo Kang Joon from Sly and singleagin, Noona Lover.
But this drama has become daebak, TVN is always capable for giving really good dramas, and thanks for your fast recapping Javabeans.

Thanks for the recap. Can't wait to see what happens next. Kind of funny that Seol dreaded interactions with either of the boys yet she now dating one and is opening up to the other.
I think the casting and acting are spot on.

I'm Team Seol! Girl is a ball of awkwardness and anxiety, just like I am, and boy does she over-think. I ADORE her, but she's still a slightly unreliable narrator when it comes to Jung for me. He's FAR from perfect, but I think he genuinely likes her (whether for his own amusement or actual romantic reasons is the question at the moment. Probably both). He's menacing for sure, but considering the show has proven he's helped Seol twice when she was in danger doesn't make me nearly as worried as some viewers. He's got issues, but he seems more self-absorbed and socially inept than psychotic. I view him as someone who just doesn't want to be screwed over, so he resorts to manipulation, even goes out of his way to seem unaffected and cold. The phone tossing scene was the only scene thus far that made me truly suspicious.
As someone who sees a lot of herself in Seol, I'd say her being uncomfortable and awkward with Jung and at ease with In-Ho says she's probably got some subconscious feelings for Jung she'd rather not have or acknowledge (and not just because of her initial judgement of him). I'm at ease with friends, but dates are a totally different league of awkwardness. But that's just my opinion. Seol is pretty clueless when it comes to romance and Jung should've definitely asked her what she'd like to do/where she'd like to go, but he seems pretty clueless about romance too.
Her stressing over his text and how she looked for the date spoke volumes to me, though. She is invested, even if she doesn't want to be.
I want more flashbacks of Seol and Jung. I need it.
I'm not feeling the collective love for In-Ho. I have interpreted a few of their scenes as him using her, and has been since the beginning. Sure, running through the rain is cute, but mooching off a financially struggling student (he even noted her phone was cheap) isn't cool and no matter what feelings he develops, I can't help but think at the core he is hanging around her to piss off Jung. In-Ho also wasn't the first to tell Seol to speak up for herself. He is definitely the character with his heart on his sleeve, but that and a cute moment or two isn't enough to make me like him romantically Seol. Loved the recap and can't wait to see where this drama is headed!

I agree with your every assessment. It's pretty obvious that Seol feel some kind of attraction to Jung/likes him (she lit up and waved so adorably at him in school also her every reaction to his texts) and I also agree that she just views Inho as a comfortable friend and I too don't think Inho is that great or charming. I mean he's a nice foil to Jung who is hard to read and peg down as just one thing (and why should we pigeonhole him into good guy or bad guy. he like most humans are complex. he has his good and bad days. he can be as manipulative and menacing as he can be an adorable and socially awkward boy who doesn't know how to high five or really properly date (hello you share the popcorn so your hands can touch and it may lead to hand holding) but he's really not that great of guy himself. all the characters go issues they need to work out.
i too don't like how inho is sponging off a poor college girl trying to make ends meet herself (his having her pay for his meal the very first time they met was cute nor funny to me) and a part of him is interested in Seol and hanging out with her just to get at Jung. But it's so obvious that real genuine feelings for her are developing.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who was put off by how In-Ho left her to pay on their very first "real" meeting, then continuing to try to get what he could from her later. That's not funny or cute to me either, and he's acting like he didn't go through her phone also, which didn't make me happy. He knew it belonged to her, so there was no reason to snoop, yet he didn't think twice about it or bothering Jung with it. I don't hate In-Ho at all and see why he's necessary...but I don't see why these actions are being kinda erased? Especially when the drama has made it clear that Seol is SO burdened financially. I'd finally stand up for myself, too, if a guy pestered me about buying him meals.
You're right, EVERY character is flawed and has to work on their issues. And I like that because it's realistic. I guess I'm just genuinely baffled at the gushing over In-Ho, but I think people really find him "safer" because they can anticipate his reactions easier than Jung. I tend to enjoy Jung's complexity more despite his faults.

I agree with you! I also see myself in Seol. I can be comfortable with friends, but I become awkward with my dates. And I'm so agree with this :
"Sure, running through the rain is cute, but mooching off a financially struggling student (he even noted her phone was cheap) isn’t cool"
I was introduced with a guy once and he borrowed money from me even before we went out together . My respect towards him was instantly dropped to the lowest level (and, after years, he didn't even contact me again or returned my money ). That's why, I prefer Jung all the way.

Neither guys are a great catch at this point in time (I'm hoping all three have some major growth ahead considering the fast pace of the drama), but I'm Team Jung too if I had to choose. For multiple reasons, but one simply being I feel they have more chemistry and have the makings of being a great couple--if they learn to communicate and see beyond themselves.
The more I discuss it the more I get some Pride and Prejudice vibes from this drama.
That is terrible that you were treated that way! I'm surprised that some aren't even concerned over In-Ho's previous actions and find them adorable. I don't think Jung's actions in the past were all that cute either but dang. You'd think In-Ho was an angel.

team give me all the ships. i'm team Jung but I do enjoy her scenes with Inho and understand why she needs that lighter and much much easier filter in her life. However I find all the awkwardness on the first date very realistic and true to life of any first date and especially of one where the two on the date with all their similarities have such opposite personalities and ways of dealing with things. They both need to learn how to communicate and listen to one another, and also get to know each other better in order to find that middle ground where they can bring both their worlds together and be comfortable and ease and on equal footing as they date. I am interested in watching to see if they can learn to make it work or will come to the conclusion that they simply aren't right for one another. I read the webtoon so I know what their futures hold, but I'm interested to see how the drama handles it and what they will change or keep.

I must admit, after watching this episode, i find it hard to ship JungxSeol coz she doesn't seem at all comfortable when she's around him, when they're on their own.. In contrast, she seems relaxed and able to just let go when she's around In Ho..

I've never experienced second lead syndrome before so I guess this is how it feels :') A lot of admiration for In Ho and how he expresses his thoughts without inhibition. I appreciate people who speak their mind, and even more so when they encourage others to do the same and not be a pushover all the time. I'm glad to see that In Ho's words gave Seol a little push and that she's learning to verbalise and communicate her concerns when enough is enough, instead of merely thinking of things she would actually say to these people based on her inner monologue. (Sorry for the poor English!)
Right now I enjoy scenes with In Ho and Seol together more than anything else. Still I'm curious to see how Jung and Seol's relationship will develop over time. That date scene was rather stiff with not much communication, but we all start the same way with certain people in the initial stages, don't we? No matter how painful it can be. (Hmm btw I thought Jung would be astute enough to notice how Seol was worrying over the menu. Surely he'd know how she feels towards expenses? That scene also reminded me of their "expensive" onigiri meal which made me think then, ah, so he has that unique idea of "expensive", and I appreciated that. Anyway I wonder what was on his mind throughout the whole date this time round.)
And then there are others with whom you seem to hit things off right away, like In Ho and Seol. She's like a different person around him. Their interactions aren't extremely positive but they still appear to be natural and somewhat comfortable in terms of expressing themselves around each other. On the other hand when I try to picture her acting like that around Jung, it's quite comical haha (I end up picturing Jung as jokester In Ho). She's being quite careful and reserved at the moment which is completely understandable. Ahh. Looking forward to how they'll start opening more to each other. Won't be easy.. But I'll believe in you two!!

You know I always back the guy the heroine likes because it doesn't matter how perfect a guy is (let's face it, the second lead is usualy way better than the main lead) if the leading lady doesn't love him they don't move me. But Seol and In Ho seem to have the best time together. It actually makes me think she might end up falling for him.
I don't know. The show is really making it seem possible that Jung isn't the right guy for Seol. The way he started to smirk at In Ho in that last scene right after he says 'She's my girlfriend' it made it seem like his interest in her was indeed manipulative rather than genuine. I don't personally believe that but if Seol sees that expression. Well. We know she sees right through Jung, so I imagine she'll feel even more insecure.
I love how everything is uncertain. This show is soooo great.

Yeah, I was wondering whether Jung's decision to date Seol was realised when he saw In Ho approached Seol the day before...
When Jung asked her whether there was anything interesting to Seol at the academy... I think he was expecting Seol to inform him about In Ho but she didn't and his response after that.... "There's nothing of interest......" .. His facial expression means a lot of thing... and now he saw both of them again..
p.s I don't like the preview... ha ha... because now I have to find something else to fill my mind ... other then thinking what is going to happen in their relationship.

Who in here watch these 4 episodes more than once? ^^
Many describe Jung using the word creepy. I see him more someone who just hit where necessary to get thru to things. He doesnt like wasting energy or time. While some may see it as malicious & manipulative, he only threatens those unpleasant lot like that douchbag, Yoo Jun, assistant Heo (I'm sure he has something on Heo) & Baek siblings (dont know the back story now). And he is not wrong to want In Ha to get a job.
He is always on the watch out for Seol silently, I have no doubt he likes her very much. We know he is happy but Seol isnt as happy. I hope Seol would ask him directly rather than have doubts. She might not get a straight answer at first but if he likes her enough, he will come to realise he got to learn to share his thoughts. And I hope Seol will also come to realise it s ok to receive. He is after all filthy rich enough to buy a meal ^^
I lost count on how many times i had rewatched the last few episodes. They are just so well done.

I am so in love with this drama! I also like the webtoon very much, but I only read the translation (no access to the original one on Naver, and I wouldn't understand enough anyway) which is kind of up to this moment we see in epiosde 4. I hope the drama won't take a bad turn (I know we all hope so, of course, haha) - for me, year 2015 was a year of dramas with good beginnings but average or even bad endings (Yong Pal......), so I hope Drama Gods will have mercy on my choices this year, hehe.

OK... Does it sound weird for me to say... I want YooJung to suffer???
Like, I love his layered, questionable character, but I guess that's also why I wanna see him totally wrecked. I wanna see him crying and I want him to HURT.
...
On a much brighter note, I love Seol. I like how the actress manages to pull her off as introverted and guarded but so endearing and relatable, all soft and squishy like she could be made of TOFU.
I know some viewers have commented that she's too much of a pushover, or closer to the typical "candy" type we see so often in dramas, but I'm inclined to disagree. One of the reasons I like her so much is because she reminds me of actual girls I know - level-headed girls working hard towards their futures. And, like Seol, it's not that they pooh-pooh romance as though it's something they don't need and therefore have absolutely no interest in, but rather, it's simply not practical to actively chase after it. I say this because some were bothered by Seol's reactions in the fortune-telling trailer, and I was disturbed enough that I had to say, "How is interest in romance considered weakness of character?"
I won't say any more about that, because I realise I've gotten too passionate. Sorry, but gAD DEMMIT I AM WAAAAAY TOO EMOTIONALLY INVESTED IN THIS DRAMA.
and it's only january. January....
If i die before this drama ends, can I plz haunt one of you and watch it with you? I promise not to try and possess your body in order to seduce your boss and settle my grudge of dying a virgin. Haha.
No promises tho.

It's so refreshing... I like that main lead is not a typical hero, warm nice guy like in other dramas, he's a potential psychopath hahahaha.
I find it weird though that the 2nd male lead and the girl get along way better than the main lead and her. I mean the two are the only ones in the poster... HE'S THE CHEESE AND SHE'S THE MOUSE but right now the cheese is looking very undesirable... if I were the mouse, I wouldn't even bother getting near the trap hahahaha!
I find it funny that the main leads are so alike. That won't work. If one person likes to keep their thoughts to themselves obviously they need people around them that speak their mind and encourage them to do so. Just look at all of Hong Seol's friends! All of them are loud and speak their mind and they share their thoughts with her. She's more of a thoughtful person so she spends a lot of time thinking over the words everyone says to her. With Yoo Jung how is she gonna do that... He is also a smarty and a goodie-two-shoes (well supposedly) and he doesn't speak his mind either... he isn't loud..they are too alike. Someone is gonna have to bend. Right now In Ho is influencing her decisions way more than anyone

So far, I am enjoying the drama. I am a huge fan of the webtoon so like most, I was weary. But when I watched the promos before the show even started, for once I was genuinely excited to see this adaption be made into a show. I know there aren't comparisons being made here (which I completely understand), but just some things that have been bugging me a little and I wanted to let out. Some of the things I say may be seen as spoiler-y for some people, just a warning, lol.
The couple of scenes that had me scratching my head - after saying yes to dating, Seol says hi to Jung and he says hi and then just leaves?? And also, when he texted and went back to his game. Even from a realistic perspective...wth? lol. In the webtoon , Jung is actually really attentive to Seol (in my perspective) so it just threw me off a bit. Also what threw me off was Seol's thoughts during their date. In the webtoon, it seems like she doesn't feel awkward with Jung, but she still does overthink situations. My guess is since this is going to be 16 episodes and they are surprisingly filming scenes past season 2 in the webtoon, that they are trying to cover as much as possible in a drama capacity.
Regardless, still enjoying it and after seeing the preview for next week, can't wait!

At this point I can't help but feeling super uncomfortable with the idea of Seol and Jung ending up together. The whole scene with him avoiding her after asking her out and then doing a total 180 to become a supportive boyfriend irked me so much as it shows his manipulation skills and how he's playing her like a fiddle.
I also wonder if Seol actually likes him or if she just feels grateful towards him and hence don't want him to dislike her. A big sign for me was after he asked her out and her reaction was more of "he can't possibly like me, can he? Why is he doing this?" instead of being happy about it. In fact, she didn't seem happy about it at all. Jung has helped her so much and we know Seol is a kind of person who shows a lot of respect towards her upperclassmen. My interpretation is that she's feeling almost burdened because he's done so much for her so she can't bring herself to turn him down.

Actually about this whole OTP thing, somewhere while reading the webtoon, I suddenly thought - f**k this. Both of them have so much growing up to do, she's better off without them!
Sigh, but Jung is really a good Daddy Long Legs for our struggling heroine. How the hell is she going to do her best with uni with a dad like hers?
But if she rejected Jung, who knows what kind of hell he might have in store for her? I pity her not. She seems to attract weird guys!

Thanks for the recap! I appreciate reading another perspective after watching the episode myself.
I've read the manwha and I never understood why people label Jung a socio/psychopath. Sure, he gets a bit intense, and some of his actions seem a little out there, but I think he's just emotionally inept if anything.
And from his interactions with people and the way that they treat him, his actions and behavior are understandable. Only that scene with him and that character at the homeless man scene was weird, he's generally just reacting to how people treat him.
Seoul does seem more comfortable around InHo, but I honestly don't trust him at all. Especially when he told Seoul that Jung did that to his hand - that was so misleading if we go by the flashback scene of when the incident occurred. And maybe I'm a little like Jung myself, because InHo is too uncontrolled and aimless for me to find anything likeable in him. I like structure, lol.

Jung is such an enigma and he really seems either emotionally detached or emotionally stunted. He seems incapable of understanding Seol on any level despite the attraction he feels, or whatever. But I still like him and find him interesting. In-ho does seem to understand Seol more and I do like him, but he comes off as childish to me. So I'm legitimately torn and we're only four episodes in. I get LSK is acting her own InHa but honestly it's a bit ... uncomfortable to watch. Her facial expressions and the way she talks is so over the top. InHa is supposed to be a wild character but I guess some things that look/sound okay in a webtoon doesn't necessarily translate well. I hope she dials it back a bit soon because the way she largens her eyes on purpose whenever she's mad makes me frustrated lol.
Also scenes with SKJ and PHJ make me cringe a bit mainly because Jung looks like his uncle instead of a same aged "friend". But their acting makes up for it I guess. The woes of being the eldest.

Her acting needs work.....that's the problem. She is too literal with everything. Obviously, a drawing cannot speak, so certain actions have to be exaggerated to create the effect as if the characters in the webtoon were really speaking.
However, the actress doesn't realize that this exaggeration in the webtoon doesn't translate when bringing the character to life. She needs to work on her acting. It is so cringeworthy to watch.
I just want to skip over her parts.

I was afraid that the drama might downplay Jung's behavior or excuse him, but I love how they have written him. Very similar to the webtoo. And we see more of Seol questioning herself AND Jung, just like the webtoon.

WOW!!! AWESOME drama. I read some of the webtoon--not much of a digital reader--- and I think they're going the right direction. I got my oldest sis to watch this drama with me which is a miracle in itself. As a college students this drama is doing such an awesome job of showing how good and BAD college life really is. With all the exams and freaking terrible group projects in store I believe very much that every character is a college student. AS for our lovely lady, I think she needs to learn quite a bit on how to move long in the real world.I like our main guy- no matter who sinister- because he isn't afraid to bring down the leaches who want to suck out the life of everyone else. He is defiantly very manipulatiative and super sketchy but I love how he is being truly honest with her. Why does he like her??? I read what other said and it made perfect sense. They are both vulnerable for begin used but he does something about it. They are both also tough and won't waste time on people who will bring them down. Although they are super awkward right now I think they make a much better match by personality and character. Thank you for the recap!!

this drama is the best - every ep has a (or a few) classic scenes which will stick in my mind forever! The small encounters between Seol and Jung are so unbelieveably spot on and realistic.
Ep 2 - all the "stalking scenes"
1. jung following seol (love that fastforward powerwalk scene ) and her turning around to tell him off only to face the air !
2. her doing an about turn in the stairwell and colliding into a group of students - did you see Jung having to carry the naked mannequin when he was helping to pick up stuff? lols!
3. their first triangle kimbap lunch (her internal "cunning as a snake " monologue will forever be etched in my kdrama memories)
4. when he does the Terminator scene and barges into the lift to ask her out to lunch.. she looked absolutely terrified the poor girl
ep 3
1. when he walks her home and asks "so? do you want to date me?" awww... then he has to practically cajole her into saying "yes". And of course, her grabbing and dropping his hand and cringing and hesitating... I can totally get her confusion.
My take on Team Jung and Team In Ho:
Seol can only ever be In Ho's dongseng! Jung is Seol's oppa (in the BF sense). Jung definitely likes Seol a lot and I doubt if he will let her go once he has set his sights on her. I feel that Jung can care for Seol better than In Ho- he's like an oppa. if in ho wants a chance with seol, he should seriously get this act together and turn his life around first.
there's nothing really wrong with Jung except that people dun "get" him. He's a high functioning sociopath and somewhat narcissisitic. being cold is not something one can really control - you either are or you aren't. And Jung does not really cause any harm overall. He has his own brand of justice and the means to carry out his judgements.
Awkward first date:
And since when are first dates fun? it's always awkward when you're trying to find your footing and figure out the other party. and trying not to have food stuck between your teeth when eating lol! Relationships are never easy - and a bad beginning does not necessarily mean that it will not work out - Seol and Jung just need to be more open with each other. Start talking, girl!
And Jung is like a kid in front of Seol. When he let go of her hand , he looked resigned but accepting. And she was so fearful of hurting him again that she instinctly grabbed his hand (then dropped it just as fast lol) to assure him that it wasn't that she "did not like him" (in typical foot-in mouth-Seol mode).
Jung and seol are more interesting as a couple. there is more tension and both can learn from each other!

Hi Dramadreamer!
All of your favourite scenes are my favourites too *LOL*. I just want to add this :
1. jung following seol (love that fastforward powerwalk scene ) and her turning around to tell him off only to face the air ! => one of my favourites
2. her doing an about turn in the stairwell and colliding into a group of students – did you see Jung having to carry the naked mannequin when he was helping to pick up stuff? lols! => really? I'd better watch it again, LOL .. I already laugh watching the commotions because of her :D
3. their first triangle kimbap lunch (her internal “cunning as a snake ” monologue will forever be etched in my kdrama memories) => love how she is so determined that he is cunning, then slowly she is doubtful. Jung was so sweet and kind , so that every girl would go 'awwwwww' because of his confession of sorry (Park Hae Jin is so swoonyhere, hahaha .. ). Then at the end, he suddenly made her promised to eat together with him again, and Hong thought,"Okay, he is cunning". Hahahahahaha :D
4. when he does the Terminator scene and barges into the lift to ask her out to lunch.. she looked absolutely terrified the poor girl => I've watched this scene several times and always ended up LOL-ing *LOL* . I laugh when he stopped the lift door with his hand, despite Seol trying hard to close the door

Team Jung all the way! He goes out of his way to quietly help Soel with her report, get the scholarship, job, and save her from the drunk while all In Ho has done is leech off her. She even said it herself that her biggest stresser is him thinking she owes him when all he did was return her phone. Jung knows Soel is too proud so he has to help her in a way that she will accept his help. In the real world, money can make life easier and In Ho and In Ha seems to think they are entitled to receive assistance from Jung's family. Even if he doesn't take money from them like his sister, he still thinks they owe him. He's only approaching Soel because of Jung anyways - his "don't hang around the people in my life." Everyone has ulterior motives, both in real and reel life. Everyone manipulates. Some are just better than others. I wish I could manipulate as well as Jung can. The Baek siblings seriously needs to get their own lives.

You know part of Jung reminds me of me and makes me wonder if maybe he has Asperger's and is an introvert like me, trying to survive in an extroverts world. If he is it explains some of his perceived coldness as others simply not understanding that he simply doesn't have the social gene and really can't understand some social things that seem so simple to others.

There's more to In Ho and he's approach to Seol than what meet the eyes. I'm thinking that he saw Jung following Seol and he acted like he's close to her just to mess with him, and that behavior took her by surprise. Remember In Ho's is pissed off at Jung, therefore his warning to stay away from the people in his life was like an open invitation for In Ho's to approach Seol in order to mess with Jung.
Is normal to be suspicious of Jung's because where looking at this from Seol's perspective. He's a close off guy who maybe was hurt a lot by something involving the Baek siblings. They used to be close, like family and whatever happened between the three of them is what makes him beware of trusting people...until he met Seol.
BTW, first dates are kinda uncomfortable and awkward because most of the time we both want to make a good impression to the other. I think Seol likes Jung but doesn't believe he sincerely likes her because she don't fully trust Jung, so she feels insecure and don't let her guard down when she's around him.

I was reminded of Let's Eat 2 as well while watching this episode. But unlike Let's Eat 2 where I wanted the two comfortable friends to be together, here, I still want Sunbae and Seol to work things are. There is still room to grow. I want to see how this all plays out. It's a very interesting drama. And I really like the heroine.
