Goodbye, My Beloved courts Lee Min-jung, Honey Lee, Choi Won-young

We have a whole slew of potential cast additions to the upcoming SBS drama Goodbye, My Beloved, a fantasy-afterlife drama about a man who dies, then is allowed to return to the land of the living in a different body to complete some unfinished business. It sounds like a cross between 49 Days and Who Are You (the 2008 series), called a comedy full of tears, where I’m assuming that those tears will come in addition to the laughter, rather than being tears of laughter.

Goodbye, My Beloved is a remake of the Japanese novel Mr. Tsubakiyama’s Seven Days, and early on cast Rain (She’s So Lovable) to headline, though he won’t be the newly dead and body-hopping ajusshi; that role will be played by Kim Su-ro (A Gentleman’s Dignity). The middle-aged main character is given the opportunity to possess a young woman’s body, and Rain’s character then falls for her. Er, him? Er, it’ll probably be really confusing in a comical way.

Kang So-ra had previously been offered the role of that woman, although a recent report states that she has already turned down the drama. Two actresses have now popped up as potential castings, though it sounds as though neither will be playing that role, based on the character descriptions. Lee Min-jung (Sly and Single Again) has been offered the role of the perfect housewife, always working hard to keep her home sparkling and household running, in addition to looking after her father-in-law as well. She’s frugal with the money her husband earns, but manages to pull off designer attitude and salon luxury vibes in cheap clothing and do-it-yourself dye jobs. She’s “young, beautiful, slim, affectionate, and also full of tears.” Is she also real? Because she sounds like a fantasy wife to me. Then again, maybe Lee Min-jung might enjoy the chance to play the perfect wife in a perfect home? (Too soon? Can we not make jokes about that now, or ever?)

Honey Lee (Shine or Go Crazy, Modern Farmer) is up for a different character, a former actress who retired upon marrying into a chaebol family ten years ago, who has spent the past decade suppressing her personality to suit her new position. She then makes her comeback… as an actress without a likable image who only returns to work out of necessity.

Then there’s the ever-busy Choi Won-young (Twenty Again, I Remember You), who’s described as a mid-thirties divorced man with a degree from a top-rate university, who’s been on the fast-track to promotion and success. I find it amusing that his would-be character’s name is Jung Ji-hoon, which is Rain’s real name. Can we have everyone slinging around character’s name in hilariously disrespectful ways, just to poke fun at the star?

Goodbye, My Beloved follows Remember as a Wednesday-Thursday drama on SBS, premiering in Feebruary.

@ Bongsookie?

Yeah! LOL! That pic of Choi Won Young got me giggling. Can't imagine him like that in RL after seeing him in IRY and Twenty Again!

Haha yeah, well he had a totally different image from IRY and Twenty Again in Heirs (as a loving father) and KMHM (as the secretary) - overall no matter what role he plays he so believable that I end up forgetting his previous roles! Plus for his age...he still got the looks :)

Hope not, I just do not have any good feelings about it. Korean adaptations of cdramas tend to be rather terrible (Fated To Love You was an exception, and even then the leads were the ones who saved it)

I don't think she's popular enough to get cast as the lead in that.

I am a big fan of Choi Won Young after IRY and Twenty Again, so i will frankly just watch any show he takes up from now on!

Also, I feel really bad for Lee Min-jung, getting her name dragged through the mud last year for her husband's actions.

She's a better actress than most people think, going by Sly& Single Again.

Lee Min-Jung's performance in Smile, You is one of my favorites. I really hope she shines in a role like that again soon.

Given how much I loved the romance in that drama, it's been especially hard watching all this happen to her in the last year.

I hate that she's getting judged for doing what's likely best for her child in such a conservative society. She's a grown ass woman and can make her own choices!

@pogo,

Yoon So Hee is taking yet another second fiddle role in tVN's Remember with Lee Sung Min... can someone give this girl a star vehicle already?! I was hoping against hope that she would be cast in Moon Lovers even if it looks like a hot mess because the boost in exposure might have been worth it. Sigh.

I feel sorry for her personal life, but I've never enjoyed her acting. I found Sly & Single Again over-the-top, and other Lee Minjung's roles were forgettable.

I agree. Her best performance was back in 2008 in Who Are You and that's way before her marriage.

Yes, but BIG was horrible. Not to the actor's fault but the writers and direction.

Same here. I still think it was such a waste that she married a douche bag like LBH. He seemed like trouble from the start. sigh...

Also, she's not the best actress around but I actually do enjoy watching her. She was good in Smile You and I liked her in Sly & Single Again, as well. I hope we'll get to see her onscreen again.

Is it a Choi Won-young ♥ Lee Min-jung ship??

If it is, I am totally in!!!

Too much eyecandy aint too much. If it's Won-Min ship, I am ready to sail. Fighting Choi Won-young and Lee Min-jung. You look so well together.

I love Honey Lee too btw

The novel seems more family-oriented than romance. I was hoping they'll stick to that, but it's a kdrama after all.

Ah it's a shame Kang Sora is out. I would've enjoyed watching her and Honey Lee in the same drama. I'm glad Honey Lee's in another drama, she's improved steadily over the years and I am looking forward to seeing her in this.

I agree. Honey Lee seems to be a "passe-partout" actress in K-dramaland these days. From melodrama to absurd comedy to sageuk she can pull almost anything off.

I can't stand Lee Min-jung. Stay at home and take care of your baby. It is great not seeing you in Dramaland.

A quite big (really, big) part of me agrees with you; it's true, she did ruin the rom-coms she's been in with her non-acting bizarre facial expressions and yes, she can afford to stay home and let other more talented ladies, who might need the roles and the pay cheques as well, have a fair chance. On the other hand, however, we have all seen too much bashing against actresses, especially the last two years, for all kind of nonsensical reasons. So, no matter how we feel about any artist (even if the word "artist" sounds more as a euphemism that might upset some of us), we, the sane ones, should refrain from those kind of comments and let the crazed netizens do "the dirty job"...

Again.. Before you bashing Kim Tae Hee, now Lee Min Jung. So tell us who is your favourite actress(ess)?

Honey Lee is quite a versatile actress. She can do rom-com, but I definitely love her in Shine or Go Crazy. If one day she is given a role like Mishil, she will nail it for sure.

What I don't like is that it is a middle aged man who is given a second chance through a younger woman's body. I would've preferred it if it was a middle aged man who is given a second chance through a younger male (Rain) body.

Not like BIG though because that was just annoying.

I don't really like the premise that younger is better regardless of the gender.

Why the assumption that just because there's a likelihood of a technical male-male romance, it will automatically be treated "in a comical way"? Surely this is a topic that can be seriously too? Is Korea really that backward?

Don't take it seriously.

I would assume this would have more comical side rather than dramatic anyway.

I honestly can't think of any gay relationship portrayed in a "serious" way in a KDrama, unlike in some Taiwanese and Japanese dramas. One-sided loves, sometimes, like in Answer Me 1997, but the vast majority of gay characters (which are still very very few) are there for laughs in KDramas. And of course, almost every gender-bending drama uses the possibility of a character being gay for laughs. Coffee Prince might be an exception.

But really, it's relatively recent since the US has become accepting of non-straight people, and even then there is still a good chunk of the population that is anti-gay... so I think it's going a bit far to try and make it seem like Korea is SO far behind the times because of this.

Funny how it was not even 20 years ago when Ellen DeGeneres came out and the media went into a frenzy, but now someone comes out and no one bats an eye. A lot has changed in the US in the past couple of decades.

I am not too fond with Lee Min Jung, she is OK as an actress and she is pretty, but I am not won over with her acting yet. Maybe this time around she can do better? We will see.. ;)

I love Honey Lee, and she impressed me in SOGC, so i am looking forward to this drama.

Though I wanna see Kang Sora, everyone else still rumored to be connected to this show is okay with me. :) Kim Soo-ro is one of the easiest personas to impersonate, I'm sure his "possessed" body will have fun playing the role.

As much as I like Kang So-ra, she never felt the 'right fit' if Rain were to accept. Now considering he did, I love the possible addition of both LMH and Lee Honey. They both are good actress (the latter much better IMO) and if love lines are involved, the chemistry will surely be more easy to imagine. Yay for good casting all round.
