Yoon-ah, Yoo Hae-jin to join Hyun Bin in action thriller

Hyun Bin’s (Fatal Encounter) new action thriller Alliance has cast his co-stars, with Yoon-ah (Prime Minister and I) confirmed to join and Yoo Hae-jin (Veteran) currently considering. I’m excited to see Hyun Bin in another intense movie and Yoo Hae-jin has a ton of entertaining projects under his belt — I have no feelings about Yoon-ah, who is neither a draw for me nor a detractor — so I’m intrigued by the sounds of this match-up.

The movie centers around the formation of the first joint North-South undercover investigative unit, and Hyun Bin was the first to be cast a couple months ago as a North Korean detective. Yoo Hae-jin’s character is also a North Korean detective, but the relationship between the men is described as a “fierce action showdown,” so something tells me there’s plenty of conflict within the team. Maybe a jostling for authority? Personal discord? Disagreement over who’s the bigger badass?

Yoon-ah’s character plays Yoo Hae-jin’s sister-in-law (the younger sister of his wife), though not much else is given about her role in the film. (I’m going to guess there’s a romance with Hyun Bin, just because it seems like the obvious thing to do with the casting, but that’s just speculation.) They’ll all be taking on North Korean accents for the movie, which is always quite the challenge; North Korean accents can be tricky, and Korean audiences are often pretty critical of imperfect ones. But it’ll earn ’em praise if they pull it off credibly.

Alliance comes from producer Yoon Je-kyun, who directed the massive box-office hit Ode to My Father, which was his second film to top 10 million ticket sales — Haeundae drew 11.32 million, while Ode took in 14.26 million. With that kind of success, I can see why ambitions are high for this film, which boasts a production budget of 10 billion won. It’s written by My Little Hero’s Kim Sung-hoon, and will begin filming in early 2016.

If actresses like Jin Se Yeon,Suzy and Shin Se Kyung can have lead roles in movies all the time and never improve their acting, why can't Yoona have a supporting role? She is honestly better than previous three and is able to give a surprise, especially in smaller role like this.

Stop putting Shin Se Kyung in that group. She's actually quite good.

Shin Se Kyung is quite good..? She surprised me with non-robotic acting in Sensory Couple, but other than that, her face does not convey any emotion. I find it easier to watch Suzy act than her.

Shin Se-kyung occasionally does the eye-widening thing, but she is not even close to as much of a facial/vocal blank as Suzy. And she was actually decent - expressions, voice and all - in Six Flying Dragons and before that, Tree with Deep Roots. She's no Go Ah-sung or Shim Eun-kyung, but she's very much watchable.

0

She was great in Tazza 2. Her acting has improved quite a bit and while she's not the best, she does not deserve comparisons to Jin Se Yeon, lol.

0

For the amount of experience and time she spent working in the industry Shin Se Kyung is below average actress.

I can even give a pass to girls like Yoona and Suzy who are primarily idols and than actors but for actresses like SSK and PSH that are doing this since they were children and still can`t kiss or emote properly , there is really now excuses.

why should these idols get a pass for poor acting, though? If the excuse is that they are singers and so can't be expected to be good at acting, that's nonsense. Especially considering the likes of Yoona and Suzy are hardly debutantes, and there are idols like Jung Eunji and IU who are actually good at acting despite debuting at the same time or even after Yoona/Suzy, and don't need the "but she's an idol, cut her some slack!" excuses made for them.

0

Neither Eunji or IU are great actresses ,they are serviceable at best. Eunji is stuck with one character she knows how to play and she does a variation of that for every single drama shes in.
And IUs acting can be quite emotionless. I actually think Yoona emotes better than both of them based only on watching PMAI, and she also has more poise. I also agree that Sooyoung is very charizmatic and good actress even for idol standards. Best idol actress i saw is Eunjung, at least i think shes still an idol. I always liked how versatile and powerful she is on screen.

I say this as an objective observer as i dont follow idols and really have no idea how they are as singers/performers.

0

Literally all I know about Jung Eunji and IU is that outside of acting, they're idols - I don't know their music and my opinions of their acting are based on what I see in their performances.

And based on that alone, they would both wipe the floor with Yoona, with the greatest of ease. This despite the fact that she has supposedly been acting longer than they have. Yoona can be quite natural and charming onscreen, but lacks emotional depth (and her bearable roles are basically written from the same character template). That's not something the other two struggle with, based on their most recent acting work.

0

agreed with lemondoodle that Shin Se-kyung does not deserve to be lumped in with the other two. Her voice alone would put her way ahead of them.

And yeah, Yoona is ok for a supporting role though her bandmate Choi Soo-young is the one who's actually good at it in their group. (I've seen a couple of the others and they were, well, not good)

I don't get why some people think Shin Se-kyung is as bad as Suzy. She's way better even though her acting still needs work. I heard she's doing a pretty good job in 6FD right now.

Yoona isn't the worst idol actress, but yeah, Soo-young is better. Don't know why she doesn't get as many good roles.

Jung Eunji is still my favorite idol actress, though. I want to see her in more diverse roles so people will stop saying she's only good at playing one type of character.

I actually liked her in Prime Minister and I. If it wasn't for the bad writing in the last few episodes of the drama, it would have been a top favorite.

If they all pull of North Korean accent i can see a lot awards for this movie, especially considering the producer is the one behind Ode to My Father.

It`s time for Hyun Bin to have a good comeback project , his last two didn't meet the expectations. This will be Yoonas movie debut and she'll be supporting roles so i have no problem with her casting. Yoo Hae Jin is always entertaining so i hope his confirmed.

Hwang Jung-min carried "Ode to My Father", it was not an award winner but it made a lot of money. Currently at #2 at the all time top grossing movies behind Choi Min-sik's "Roaring Currents."

I think Yoon more of a movie maker for box office hits than a critical acclaim kind of producer/director/writer like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho.

Not a fan of any of the actors but I hope it'll do well.

yeah, sometimes the biggest-grossing movies aren't always the best in terms of cinematic quality but I guess just what taps into a mood at the time? I mean, I think War of the Arrows is far and away the best of Kim Han-min's movies, but considering the subject and timing of Roaring Currents, that's the one that became the bigger hit.

"Roaring Currents" was a movie of national pride. No one was surprised that it went straight to #1 and it will stay there for a very long time. WOTA was better I agree.

Chungmuro is well dominated by Korea's best actors. If we look at the top grossing movies of all time we'll find Choi Min-shik, Hwang Jung-min, Ha Jung-woo, Song Kang-ho etc at the top. When we look at critically acclaim movies we'll also find the same actors at the top. I think it's amazing. Talents and Star power goes hand in hand.

Dramaland on the other hand ....(nevermind).

When one side of the coin excites me to hear return of Hyun bin, it equally upsets me to hear that Yoon-ah will be into it as well. She needs some serious acting lessons!!

Well, fortunately for the actors I can't really tell one accent from another. I can sympathize though because as a native speaker of Bostonian ;) I usually cringe whenever it's attempted by outsiders. This will have good actors though!

Everyone is concerned about Idols and what-not i don't even Care because
HYUN BIN kyaaak!!!!?manse? Lol.
I thought i wouldn't see him for a while after being burned by the drama that shall not be named but im relieved he's getting back to work.
Oh and Yoona isn't that bad except the age difference she was very believable in Prime Minister and I.
I don't like classifying Idols as bad actors just because of one or two individuals, Eun ji, Eric of shinwa,Soo young of girls generation maybe Jang Geun sook are decent actors.
Oh and after Choi si won recent great performance he now qualifys as a decent actor.

The movie plot sound nice and Yoo Hae-jin is one of my favorite actor so i can't wait for it.

People actually gave their thoughtful opinion on something even if to criticize. Now seems like hate spam commenters on other sites had found their way here. I actually don't mind Yoona in this? I think acting opposite respected veterans will only help her improve, and after PM&I, I'm finally convinced that she actually has potential to build upon.

Granted, her role in PM&I was more lighthearted and bubbly compared to the the tone of the movie here but yunno,
hopes spring eternal.

OH WHY OH WHY!!! Why put these idiols in movie and dramas?!! Make them go through school just like all the hard working actors and actresses did. They we're chosen to be idol not actress or actors, I find it unfair to those who worked soo hard to be on the screen. All these bimbos does it put on mediocre singing and they get the big shot!!! I mean ALLL IDOLS NOT JUST FEMALES.. It's a shame because when you want to watch a drama or movie and all you see is BIMBOS with a veteran or talented actors it makes me soo angry and irriate cus I can't watch it no more since I know it will turn out horrible with these bimbos in it.

Finally! I have been dying to see her in something since her wonderful turn as Nam Da-Jung in 2013's The Prime Minister and I. I passed on her God of War Zhao Yun appearance as that show was not really my cup of tea (I just can't get past the voice dubbing unfortunately). Alas... until this is out, I will have to sustain my Yoona addiction via fancams (which to be honest is no great struggle lol).
